Preliminary numbers show a total of 122.4 million tourists visited Florida in 2021. That’s down from 2019, before the pandemic, when 131 million visitors came to the Sunshine State.

Data shows opposition to develop Fills JIM McCARTHY

estrooms, trail enhancements, minimized parking and recreational water access are among the proposed developments within two proposed visions for the Fills in Islamorada. Consultants hired by the village are set to present data and feedback from the public, as well as the visions, to the dais at a meeting inside Founders Park Community Center on Thursday, Feb. 17. But survey results and comments gathered from the public over the past several months show many opposed to the idea of enhancing the Fills experience. A stakeholder survey presentation by CPH Inc. unveiled in November gathered some 344 responses and comments from local residents. Of those responding, 92% said they owned property in the village. Roughly 60% of the respondents were opposed to the idea of bringing active recreation, like boat and kayak access, to Indian Key Fill and passive uses, such as bike and pedestrian amenities, to Tea Table and Lignumvitae Fills. The area stretches between MM 79.6 and 77.7. Results also show that residents were split on the idea of overlooks
and pull-off areas to allow safe and specified locations for taking photos of the water and viewing sunsets. As for parking, a high number of respondents, 61%, disagreed with the idea on the Fills. But if parking was provided, 77% believed people should be charged for using the parking spots. A majority also believed in charges for boat launch parking. Roughly 52% said they’re strongly opposed to restroom facilities on the Fills. Many also strongly agreed on a swim ban along the Fills, as well as no-wake zones. A number of comments mention that the Fills isn’t a park and that it should be kept natural without any development. “This is a critical narrow area and its use should be limited accordingly. It is not suitable for a recreational area,” said one resident who provided a comment. A seven-page document posted to the Fills Master Plan website includes the 340-plus responses from residents. Community workshops last October saw residents meeting oneon-one with consultants to provide comments. A community survey was also sent out with responses back by mid-November. Another workshop in December saw a red dot/green dot exercise led by Javier Omana,
director of land planning services with CPH, Inc. A workshop on Feb. 3 saw discussion on concepts. Following a presentation, the council will select and approve a concept and budget. A final concept and design report is expected by mid-March. In March 2021, village council members unanimously approved to go with CPH Inc. to assist in developing a master plan for the property, which is owned by the Florida Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Protection. A pair of sublease agreements are in place between the village and the state agencies that give Islamorada the ability to manage and maintain the Fills. That agreement began in 2019. While authorized to control parking and access, the village is also required to submit a management plan for each agency’s approval. Mayhem at the Fills came to a breaking point in June 2019, just after the Memorial Day Weekend, when scenes of overfilled dumpsters and the littering of plastic bags and beer cans caused an uproar among residents and then council members. By 2020, measures were taken to reduce parking space on the Fills. Barricades and orange cones still remain. A ramp on Indian Key remains closed, but it could open soon once Florida Keys Electric Cooperative completes line pole repairs.

RENOVATIONS RULE THE DAY AT BOCC MEETING IMPROVEMENTS TO KEY WEST AIRPORT, LIBRARIES AND TRAFFIC DISCUSSED
THE END OF AN ERA Tom Hambright retires after 36 years as county historian

A
t the Feb. 16 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the overall theme was improvements, whether it was renovating Key West Airport’s Concourse A, introducing advanced technology into the library system or fixing traffic on the Stretch. David Strickland, the director of county airports, gave an update about the renovations at Key West airport’s Concourse A. He announced that he has been able to slice $2.4 million off the budget by making design decisions that are easier on the wallet: a virtual reality experience will replace an aquarium as a design element; terrazzo floors are being switched with a more cost-effective type of flooring; and a “spider glass” curtain wall of windows will be a cheaper two-panel window instead. Though the renovations of the concourse are still in the design phase, Strickland showed a video of what they will look like. After exiting their plane, passengers will walk through a virtual reality underwater “experience.” The star of the video caused some chuckles: a huge bar lining the wall of baggage claim. “You would be surprised how many arriving passengers talk about that,” said Strickland, in response to the laughs. “If they’re new to Key West and have never been before, they want their drink.” Library director Kimberly Matthews spoke about the new technology being introduced in the libraries as a result of a recent federal grant: $975,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act. Matthews said that new tech includes self-service machines for printing, laptops and charging sta-
tions, and a holds locker that will be available 24/7 outside of the libraries. She also announced 24/7 stand-alone-unit libraries that will contain 340 books and DVDs. “The purpose is to provide service in underserved areas, like Stock Island and in the Tavernier area,” explained Matthews. She said staff is currently negotiating to lease a space next to the Tavernier Winn-Dixie. The unit will be available 24/7 and have an LCD screen in front. When Rice expressed concern about vandalism, Matthews replied that these units have scratch-proof exteriors and have been deployed across the country without any complaints of vandalism. Sheriff Rick Ramsay unexpectedly introduced a light moment when discussing his item: a request to ask FDOT for fencing or foliage at mile marker 109 on the Stretch. The reason? To prevent “lookey loos.” Evidently, this part of the stretch is called Bikini Beach, and traffic screeches to a halt so drivers and passengers can get an eyeful of the swimmers hanging out on the sand. So a barrier of some sort would prevent the slowdown of traffic by obstructing the view. “Although we are a scenic highway, that track is a little too scenic?” asked Mayor David Rice, with a chuckle. “Yes, it appears to be too scenic, Mr. Mayor,” replied the sheriff. He explained that during peak season traffic backs up two miles north and south on the Stretch and a lot of accidents happen as a result, causing police and fire-rescue services to be tied up. The board resolved to give Ramsey permission to ask FDOT for a visual barrier at MM 109, whether it’s foliage or a fence.
Monroe County Public Library Historian Tom Hambright, center, will retire on Feb. 23 after 36 years with the county. At the Feb. 16 Board of County Commissioners meeting, seen here, the board members decreed that Hambright is "Historian Emeritus." KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Monroe County

nne L. Rice, assistant director of support services for Monroe County Public Library, will miss the way Tom Hambright delicately handled historical papers, such as the tattered love letters from a soldier. Michael Nelson, the library’s assistant director of public services, will miss his very presence — the way he came into the library every day during COVID, even during the closures, wearing a tie along with his mask. “There will be a void in the Florida History Room without doubt,” Key West author and ghost hunter David Sloan said. “But Tom earned his retirement a thousand times over. Tom’s retirement marks the end of an era.” The Board of County Commissioners agrees. Hambright will be retiring on Wednesdsay, Feb. 23 — his 84th birthday — after 36 years with the county as a historian. So in his honor, the board decreed that he is now Historian Emeritus in a ceremony at their Feb. 16 meeting. Hambright spoke to Keys Weekly after the ceremony. “It’s satisfying, but it’s going to be boring,” he confided with a laugh. “But I’m turning 84.” He said his favorite part of the job was “when you find something new.” As an example, he excitedly talked about new documents that he discovered recently while researching the 200th anniversary of Key West. He was reading papers that described the events of March 25, 1822, when U.S. Navy Lt. Matthew Perry planted the American flag on island soil. Hambright learned from a document that Key West founding father John W. C. Fleming attended this flag raising and sang a song. “And we didn’t know this before,” he said, with a gleam in his eye. The fact that he still digs through documents jives with his passion for
history, according to Alex Vega. Vega founded the Key West Firehouse Museum in 1991 and received a lot of help from Hambright with research. The two became friends. “His passion for history rubs off on you,” Vega said. “He used to go on vacation and go to the National Archives in D.C., just researching things about Key West. Who has that time to do that? But I found myself on a few similar trips, all because of him.” “Tom's legacy is so huge it's hard to capture, but I'd say it's one of tirelessly preserving and incredibly generous sharing the history of the Keys in so many different ways,” said Nancy Klingener, reporter for WLRN and a former coworker of his at the library. She complimented his archiving of local history. “The newsletters of the Key West Maritime Historical Society are our local historical journal,” she continued. “And more recently the publicly accessible image archive on Flickr has brought the history of the Keys to the world — way more people than could ever make it to the little library on Fleming Street.” And Sloan credits Hambright with changing his life. “When I moved to Key West in 1996 to start the original ghost tour, no one was talking about ghosts,” Sloan said. “No books in the library, no one telling stories on the streets. I packed up my car and was ready to leave town when something told me to go back to the Florida History Room. Tom Hambright was there. I told him I was looking for a book on ghosts, and without looking up, he said, ‘There are none.’ As I turned to leave, he looked up and said, ‘No ghost books, but we have plenty of ghosts.’ Tom disappeared into the vault and returned with a folder full of newspaper clippings related to Key West’s haunted history. That moment changed the course of my life. I can’t imagine where I might have ended up were it not for Tom.”

WATER WAR ENSUES Opponents say Senate bill a threat to Everglades progress
A
petition has more than 37,400 signatures from opponents to a Senate bill that, they say, poses a threat to more clean water flows south to the Everglades. The full Senate will now consider the proposal, which faces opposition from Gov. Ron DeSantis, environmental organizations and local Keys fishing guides. Senate Bill 2508, which surfaced from the Senate Appropriations Committee on Feb. 4, addresses funding decisions related to environmental resources in the Senate’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Before the release of state funds, the proposed bill requires the South Florida Water Management District to certify recommendations to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that do not “diminish the quantity of water available to existing legal users.” In addition, the bill authorizes use of state funds, originally set aside for the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir, also be used for the Lake Okeechobee Watershed — namely the C-43 West Basin Reservoir Storage project and the Indian River Lagoon-South project. On Feb. 9, the bill moved out of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee via a 16-4 vote. The bill goes before Senators for second reading on Thursday, Feb. 17. The earlier subcommittee meeting was the first chance the public had to voice comments on Senate Bill 2508. Many Keys fishing guides, including Matt Bellinger, ventured to Tallahassee to relay their concerns. A backcountry captain of 32 years, Bellinger told legislators how he saw the loss of 70,000 acres of seagrass inside Everglades National Park due to salinity issues in a two-day period. “It was a season of drought, but we had no water coming in. It was the same time water was being sent east and west to Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie canals, destroying their environment. If that was going to a reservoir, which is under construction, these things would have never happened,” he said. The legislation highlights an ongoing battle over Lake Okeechobee’s water supply in various parts of Florida. City of West Palm Beach officials are backing the Senate proposal, which
they say prioritizes water for nearly 130,000 residents, customers and visitors. Organizations like The Everglades Foundation and Captains for Clean Water, as well as Keys fishing guides, say the bill would reverse years of progress in Everglades restoration. According to the Everglades Foundation, the bill jeopardizes construction of the EAA Reservoir, which would send clean water south while reducing damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the east and west coasts. Also at risk is a balanced approach to water management reached through the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), which considers future Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan infrastructure that provides additional flexibility for lake operation. “The EAA reservoir is the crown jewel of Everglades restoration,” states the Everglades Foundation. “We cannot allow it to be jeopardized. There’s too much at stake. The Everglades Foundation will continue to fight to construct the EAA reservoir and reduce harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee.” As of Feb. 16, a total of 37,429 signatures were secured for a petition posted by Captains for Clean Water opposing Senate Bill 2508. The nonprofit organization, which fights to restore and preserve water resources, said the bill is bad policy with major consequences for Florida’s environment and economy. “This bill contains substantive pieces of policy legislation that were not heard in the legislative committee process and are being fast-tracked with virtually no accountability or transparency,” the organization said. “Among several harmful provisions, this bill would result in more harmful discharges that fuel toxic algae blooms, give preferential treatment to the water supply needs of the sugar industry, and threaten two critical components to solving south Florida’s water crisis: the EAA Reservoir and the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM).” State Sen. Ben Albritton, bill sponsor, said during the subcommittee meeting on Feb. 9 that those who spoke out against the bill were being misled. Albritton said the bill protects the EAA Reservoir. In addition, he acknowledged that the SFWMD’s budget is funded primarily by the state.
“Are you really telling me that because the state of Florida gives them 70% of their money, it’s unfair to ask for some more accountability from them?” he said. DeSantis said rather than advancing legislation to effect a major policy change, Senate Bill 2508 is being rammed through the budget process, short-circuiting public engagement and leaving affected agencies in the dark. A budget proposal by the governor contained $960 million for Everglades restoration, which brings the four-year investment to more than $3 billion. “I have been a champion for Everglades restoration and oppose any measure that derails progress on reducing harmful discharges and sending more water to the Everglades,” DeSantis said in a statement. “Moreover, I reject any attempt to deprioritize the EAA Reservoir project south of Lake Okeechobee.” Senate Appropriations chair Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, disagreed with DeSantis. “I do not think we’re ramming anything through the budget process,” she said. Capt. Steve Friedman, commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association, said he’s seen what mismanagement and lack of funding can do to the bays and estuaries. He and many other local guides traveled to the state capital having learned about the bill just before the subcommittee meeting. “You can see many of us rallied to let you know the importance of how we feel this will jeopardize not only our lives, but many lives of South Florida, including hotels, restaurants and many businesses,” he said. “I think what we need to do is look at it a little bit more closely and understand this is political strategy,” he continued. “And we’re seeing through this strategy. Last-minute filings like this that try to undermine what we've been working on for years, spending hundreds of hours coming up here fighting for clean water in Florida, and fighting for our livelihoods.” State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez told the Keys Weekly that she’s expressed her concerns to Senate leadership and was told a solution is in the works. “I don’t have any further details at the moment but was told the bill would improve significantly,” she said.

VILLAGE EXPLORING REGULATIONS ON FARMERS MARKETS JIM McCARTHY
C
jim@keysweekly.com
oncerns over parking and traffic, as well as questions regarding types of goods sold, have Islamorada Village planning officials examining regulations for farmers markets. A handful of farmers markets operate on weekends in the village, one at Island Garden Home on Plantation Key and two on Upper Matecumbe Key. Everything from produce to crafts from the Keys and South Florida is on display as patrons stroll from tent to tent at the Florida Keys Farmers Market, held Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MM 81. Jae Jans has run the farmers market for four years. Roughly a year ago, his weekend market and another one located next door at MM 80.9 were told to cease immediately as they were deemed flea markets and had no temporary use permits issued at the time. The matter frustrated organizers, like Jans, and small vendors who appear at the weekend market events. Jans’ matter went before a special magistrate for a code hearing last April. He was told a temporary permit was required for his event, and he needed to submit an application for the permit for review by the village planning department. From his arrival several months ago, new village Planning Director Daniel Gulizio is reviewing the village code on farmers markets. He told members of the Local Planning Agency during a Feb. 15 meeting that the village doesn’t have specific code provisions addressing farmers markets. If anything, Gulizio said the code is mixed in how they’re regulated. He said a better definition is needed on what is a farmers market, what types of produce and products are sold and number of vendors, to name a few. “We want to look at parking considerations and traffic considerations and pedestrian safety,” Gulizio said. “Some concerns raised with existing markets involve parking and vending stations located within available parking on site and people walking across U.S. 1. We want to look at all those issues.” Gulizio added that other municipalities outline hours and days of operation for farmers markets. He’s also seen the location of farmers markets adjacent to other markets that could be considered as a relevant aspect of code. “The idea is we don’t want to
have venues competing with local stores. We want something that can enhance or complement the sale of local goods,” he said. “That’s something we’ll keep any eye on as we look at the variety of goods and services provided through these types of venues.” Tony Hammon, LPA member, said farmers market events in the village are limited in parking. He also said the events are being conducted more like flea markets. “I would be concerned about sanitation issues involved in each of these and food preparation or serving food as I see it at these events,” he said. LPA members were given three examples of regulations on farmers markets from municipalities, including the City of Doral and Lee and Brevard counties. Many spoke favorably to Doral’s regulations on farmers markets, which the city defines as an occasional or periodic sales activity where groups or an individual seller offer fresh produce and other related goods. Farmers markets in Doral are allowed Saturday or Sunday — not both. Hours of operation are between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A property owner must submit an application and pay a fee, provide a general description of goods sold, a site plan and certificate of insurance. Each vendor must submit a valid food establishment permit issued by the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. As for setbacks, vendors, tables, tents and chairs must be 20 feet away from the front, side and rear of the property line. “I thought Doral’s was very complete,” said chair Deb Gillis. Jans told LPA members that a farmers market is not a gold mine, but rather a labor of love that enhances the quality of life for the community. He said his farmers market expanded parking for customers and vendors, and urged caution in implementing new rules. “If existing rules, primarily site plan rules and existing village code, are applied to each market, I believe the main issues would be eliminated as far as parking,” he said. “If we adopt more rules to larger Florida counties, it could potentially kill any incentive to even operate a farmers market locally. More restrictions could make this whole thing a little bit tougher.” A draft code could come before the LPA at its next meeting in March for further discussion and recommendation to the village council.

he oldest house in the Florida Keys, outside of Key West, takes a bit of effort to find. It is in the woods of Marathon, on Key Vaca, at Crane Point Hammock. The house was built by George Adderley, who, circa 1890, at 20 years of age, left his life in the Bahamas behind and moved to the Florida Keys. Before building his house on Key Vaca, he lived on what has been described as Matecumbe Key, which probably indicates Upper Matecumbe Key, where the small farming community of Matecumbe was developing. He married his wife, Olivia, in 1896. In 1902, he and his wife moved to Key Vaca, settling in a virgin sub-tropical hammock on the gulf side of the island where, the following year, he purchased 32.25 acres for $100. Adderley would clear land and begin to build his house, a rectangular masonry vernacular structure with a hip roof covered in pressed tin. A homemade form of concrete called tabby held the masonry together. The mixture was created by burning shells, in this case, conch shells, to extract lime. The lime was then mixed with water, sand, ash and crushed shells until the sticky “concrete” paste was formed. The house, built circa 1906, resembled a typical rural Bahamian home. Around George and Olivia and their adopted daughter, Louisa Smith, the small black community of Adderley Town grew. Five homes were built in the area, though Adderley’s is the only surviving structure. The community worked as fishermen, spongers and charcoal makers. When making charcoal, buttonwood was the preferred tree. The late Florida historian Charleon Tebeau described the process:
“Great cone-shaped heaps of neatly stacked wood were built up, sometimes containing as much as ten cords for a single burning. This was then covered with grass and sand to make it airtight except for a vent at the top. Enough openings were made around the bottom to fire the wood and burn it so as to drive out the volatile gasses and leave charcoal. A cord of wood produced ten bags of charcoal for which there was a ready market.” By the time Adderley had built his home, the Key West Extension of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway was making tracks for Key West. Although the train would not reach Key West until 1912, by 1908, daily rail service had been established between Miami and the temporary terminus at Knights Key, three miles away at what is today considered the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge. The right-of-way ran through Adderley’s property and, in exchange for him selling the land required for the rightof-way, the F.E.C. agreed to create a stop at Adderley Town. The only railroad depot located on Key Vaca was the Marathon Station, once found in the vicinity of what is 33rd Street today. At Adderley Town, the railroad built a platform and created a flag stop. Once a week, as the train was roaring across Key Vaca, if the engineer saw the flag raised at the Adderley Town platform, he would stop. Among the residents of Adderley Town, according to the 1910 U.S. Census, were the Adderley family, and Joseph and Margret Curry and their adopted son Joseph Butler. Joseph Rigby lived on nearby Old Rachel Key with the community’s lone non-Bahamian family, David and Janet Freeman, from South Carolina. Three men were identified living in a
schooner anchored off Old Rachel Key. George and Olivia Adderley would sell their property to Francis and Mary Crane in 1949. Olivia died the following year, and her body was laid to rest at the Key West Cemetery. George would BRAD be living in Key West, at a BERTELLI home for the blind, when he passed in 1958. He, too, is an author, speaker, and Flor- is buried at the island’s ida Keys historian. cemetery. His latest book, The legacy they “The Florida Keys unknowingly left behind Skunk Ape Files,” continues to stand and is a fun blend of two of his favorite contribute to the rich hissubjects — Florida tory of the Florida Keys. Keys history and The Adderley House is part the Skunk Ape. of the Florida Black History Trail, developed in partnership with the Florida Division of Historical Resources and a group of invested citizens. The subsequent pamphlet they produced provides a microcosm of African American landmarks and legacies. Among the points of interest presented in the guide is the Adderley House, found at its original location at Crane Point Hammock at 5550 Overseas Highway. In 1992, George’s tabby house of vernacular construction became listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is the only house like it still standing in the Florida Keys. When visiting the site, it is possible to step inside and experience the home and an incredible piece of Florida Keys history on a personal level.

TREKKING FOR TRASH Divers remove 388 pounds of refuse
A
t Key Dives’ monthly Trash Trek, scuba divers worked together to remove derelict traps, line, anchors and jigs from Islamorada reefs. Their grand total for the 3 dives was 388 pounds. As with every month, the dive shop offers the first 10 spots to locals for free to help with conservation efforts. “We couldn’t do this alone. It’s a community effort, and any way we can help people get involved, we will,” owner Mike Goldberg has told the Weekly. All marine debris removal is done under permits from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and funded through grants to help more shops run community cleanup dive trips. Starting this collaboration with the sanctuary and the community years ago, Key Dives has led the way in debris cleanup efforts. Now, the shop is hoping to share its knowledge and help other shops join the effort. — Tiffany Duong

THE HISTORY OF ALLIGATOR REEF Pirates, slavery and shipwrecks This Week’s Dive Report Conditions this past week were very nice. Saturday, especially, was beautiful – with low winds and sunny skies. We took advantage of that nice weekend weather to take a group out to Alligator Reef. This reef, one of the most famous in the Upper Keys, is named after the USS Alligator, a U.S. Navy schooner constructed in 1820. Its wreck currently lies in 3 to 12 feet of water 200 feet southwest of Alligator ERIC Reef lighthouse in Islamorada. CONSERVATION Reef. The crew tried to refloat the vessel; when unsuccessful, they decided to set it afire to prevent pirates from salvaging the wreck. Today, we can observe this historical wreck right off one of our most famous reefs. We can see two ballast piles and some rubble. One of the piles contains some artifacts from the vessel. It’s in a fair state of preservation and considered a stable wreck for exploring. Next Week’s Dive Report Windy is the word for this week, at least in the first half. Thankfully, they’re calling for the winds to lay down heading into the weekend. Conservation Update Luckily, things will settle down just in time to plant some corals with I.CARE. Join Islamorada Dive Center on Saturday for our coral planting – probably also on Alligator Reef.
Alligator Reef is a designated Sanctuary Preservation Area, or SPA. These are designed to help sustain critical marine species and habitats. SPAs are marked by large, yellow buoys in each corner of the protected area. Be aware of where you’re recreating.
I.C ARE There are many I.CARE coral outplantings at Alligator Reef, so be careful not to harm the plantings when enjoying this spectacular place.

abitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys is putting on the ritz at its upcoming 19th annual cocktail party on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. at the Playa Largo Resort & Spa Ballroom. Set to the theme of “New York, New York,” the evening of magic and music will include a variety of New York City themed food stations, unlimited wine and Islamorada Brewery & Distillery brews and seltzers. Over $100,000 of trips, concert tickets, resort stays, jewelry and much more will be available during the silent and live auctions. An exclusive pre-party VIP reception is also planned at Club Playa featuring hors d’oeuvres paired with wine tasting. This party is the most significant annual event for the Habitat affiliate. Proceeds go into its building fund, which is dedicated to building affordable housing in the Upper Keys. HFHUK is currently planning its second largest project — Gardenia Place in Islamorada — with nine units on two properties. “Our schedule is to begin construction in early 2022 with anticipated completion of the project by the spring of 2023,” said Lindsay Fast, executive director. “We really appreciate the community’s support to help us build affordable housing. Attending the event, donating an item for auction or simply making a monetary contribution will all help us help families in need to achieve homeownership. “We are especially thankful to our major sponsors — American Caribbean Real Estate, CBT Construction, DEX Imaging, First Horizon Bank, Playa Largo Resort & Spa, and Riva Motorsports & Marine,” Fast continued. Tickets for the party are $200 per person. Reserve a table for 10 in advance with your friends for $3,000, which includes reserved seating and admission. Ultra marathoner Katie Spotz uses her athletic gift to raise awareness for charity H2O for Life. CONTRIBUTED
ere in the Florida Keys, there are many badasses, and we’ve had the privilege at Keys Weekly to write about many of them. But ultra endurance athlete Katie Spotz — who may actually be Rollerblading by your neighborhood as you read this — takes badassery to the next level. This week, with friend Hannah Sleight, 34-year-old Spotz is in-line skating the entire Florida Keys, roughly 31 miles a day (the length of an ultra marathon), to bring awareness to H2O for Life. She started on Monday, Feb. 14, in Key Largo’s Ocean Reef, and she plans on rolling into Key West on Thursday, Feb. 17. And we’ll be sitting here eating Valentine’s Day chocolate while watching her livestreams on her Facebook page, @hellokatiespotz. We checked her progress via text on Feb 15: “We are almost at Marathon!” she texted us. “It’s been quite the adventure but we are finding our groove and feeling strong. Plus we have some very nice tailwind at the moment!” And you can add “texting while Rollerblading” to her long list of accomplishments, which also include: completing five ironman triathlons; cycling across America; while rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean, she set a world record for the youngest-ever solo ocean rower and first American to row from Africa to South America; and, in June 2021, winning a Guinness World Record — “Most consecutive days to run an ultra marathon distance (female)” — by running an ultra marathon for 11 consecutive days in June 2021, from Cleveland to Cincinnati. But Spotz isn’t doing all this for the glory. “I’m most passionate about the work that H2O for Life is doing,” she said. “It’s a nonprofit that helps inspire action to fight the global water crisis.”
As an ambassador for H2O for Life, she is using her athletic adventures to raise awareness about the global water crisis while providing funds for water, sanitation and hygiene education for a partner school in a developing country. Spotz hopes that through the Skate4Water project in the Keys, she will inspire action to support a school community in Haiti. For example, her 11-day ultra marathon adventure in June was also to bring H2O for Life to the public eye and to fund 11 water projects in Uganda. The project was called Run4Water. She has another Run4Water project planned for later in the year: running across an entire country in South America with the goal of funding one clean water project. Spotz’s goal is to raise $1 million for water projects — giving kids a chance to stay in school and get an education instead of fetching water all day. Her awareness about the global water crisis was raised when she was attending college in Australia. The country was in the middle of a 10-year drought. A professor in one of her classes said, “The wars of the future will be fought over water.” Spotz never forgot what he said. “The more I found out, the more I was shocked — there are a billion people without clean water. And there are solutions. I think everyone can agree it’s a basic human right,” she said. She chose her project Skate4Water to be in the Florida Keys for a simple reason that inspires many to visit: “It’s nice to be somewhere warm,” she said. She also enjoys the symbolism of skating next to water. “And it’s flat,” she said, with a laugh. To make a donation to her campaign, go to Skate4Water.com. The first lecture will highlight the arboreal ant in the Florida Keys. SCOTT POWELL/Contributed
NATURE LECTURE SERIES RETURNS
George Washington University professors will discuss arboreal ant diversity
T
he annual “Delicate Balance of Nature” lecture series is going virtual this year. The three discussions set for 2022 are sponsored by the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (Citizen Support Organization). This year, the series includes three online presentations from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The first talk on Wednesday, Feb. 23, “Arboreal Ants of the Florida Keys,” will be presented by Scott Powell, professor of ecology, and Benjamin “Max” Adams, insect community ecologist, both based at George Washington University. They will introduce the world of arboreal ant diversity and its importance in a healthy and functioning ecosystem. Focusing on the processes that maintain biodiversity through time, they will highlight how their ongoing work on the arboreal ants of the Florida Keys is contributing to this knowledge. The Zoom format creates the opportunity for the series to continue and others to attend, but it will still be a limited audience (100 participants, including the speaker and hosts). Please plan to sign on a few minutes in advance of the presentation to ensure your inclusion in the list of attendees. Information to register for the talks will be available on the Friends web page: pennekampparkfriends.org/events. “We want to be able to continue this invaluable source of information for the park community, and the ability to have online presentations makes it possible,” said Ann Helmers, president of the group. “This year’s topics will be the role of arboreal ants in maintaining biodiversity in our Keys ecosystem; the importance of lobsters that inhabit the seagrass and coral reef ecosystems; and the efforts to preserve Florida Bay. We are grateful to the speakers who make it possible for us to provide high quality interpretive programs for the residents and visitors of Key Largo and the Florida Keys.” There is no charge to attend the lectures, but participants are encouraged to become members of the Friends group or make a donation that will support park projects slated to be started this year. To attend this event, registration is required. Visit this page to register: pennekampparkfriends.org/event-4627314. More information is available from Elena Muratori, park services specialist at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at 305-676-3786, or at pennekampparkfriends.org. — Contributed

he Islamorada Fishing Club welcomed 60 anglers fishing on 21 boats for the recent Islamorada Fishing Club Captain’s Cup Sailfish Tournament. The single-day fishing tournament boasted $21,000 for the winning boat. The tournament was the final leg of the Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship. It would be a day of multiple hookups for many boats. The first double-header was called in by Capt. Roy Lindback aboard his charter boat Tiki. Anglers Craig and Seanna Lindback, of Islamorada, released both fish just after 9 a.m. Contagious called in a double, as did Que Mas, My Sea Cin, Smile Maker and the Still Right. With only 20 minutes to go, Capt. JC Cleare called in a double on his boat Remix. One fish was released, and then the team hooked two more, making it a triple header. When the committee boat called lines out at 4 p.m., Remix was still hooked up to three fish. Tournament rules allow the angler to fight fish after lines out, as long as they have been acknowledged by the committee boat. These fish changed the standings for the Fishing Club tournament as well as the Gold Cup series. Tiki would be guaranteed the win at the Fishing Club with mates Mike Pinckney, Tommy “Spanky” Bressler and Charlie Lane taking the leaders and releasing five sails. The team took home Pasta Pantaleo prints sponsored by Caribee Boat Sales and Yamaha Outboards along with the check for $21,000. Remix anglers Bill Danko, of Cincinnati Ohio, fishing with Jorge Corozo, of Miami, and Doug Mientkiewicz, of Islamorada, landed in second place with four fish. Third place anglers Mark Mitchell and Kenneth Padgett, of Charlotte, North Carolina, along with Travis Bennett, of Islamorada, took third place. The team was fishing on Brian

Cone’s charter boat Contagious and released three fish before any of the other teams. Remix was crowned the Florida Keys Gold Cup Champions. Their release of the last two fish of the tournament propelled them into first place in the series with a total of 19 releases. Anglers Nick Carullo and Sarah Melina, of Miami, competed with the team. Along with their four releases in the Fishing Club tournament, the team released six sails in the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament and nine in the Cheeca Lodge and Spa Presidential Sailfish Tournament. Gold Cup Series top angler and winner of the Gold Cup Championship Ring went to angler Mark Mitchell aboard the Contagious. Mitchell released eight sailfish over the series. “The Islamorada Fishing Club Tournament created a great ending to the Florida Keys Gold Cup Series,” said Dianne Harbaugh, tournament director. “It was a tight race, not only for the teams but for the champion angler ring.” The 2023 Florida Keys Gold Cup Series will kick off in December with the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament. — Contributed
T
he 41st annual Islamorada Bartenders Sailfish Open saw Dillons winning first-place and taking the trophy for the second consecutive year. Starting at the Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar, 60 bartenders and restaurant employees representing 14 different bars released 30 sailfish on Jan. 31. With lines in at 8:30 a.m., the first sailfish hook came 16 minutes into the tournament’s start by Vice Versa. Square Grouper angler Tommy Fricke released the fish. Meanwhile, Broad Minded’s Capt. Nick Stanczyk called in a hook-up-andrelease for Dillons’ Skyler McGarry at 8:50 a.m. A flurry of activity over the next hour changed the standings. By 10:30 a.m. Cloud Nine, fishing the gang from Chef Michael’s, took the lead with releases from Chris Merrell, Christian Ledwith and Ralph Howell. Broad Minded, fishing with Dillons bartenders, stayed in second with the addition of a double-header. Ocean View (OV) held third with a double-header release for Becca Britto and Lee Cash on the Buzz On. Square Grouper angler Megan Simpson released a sail, giving their team two fish. Shipwrecks anglers Kayla Flanagan and Zeke Brauer aboard the Two Reel also had two fish. As the day progressed it would become clear that Broad Minded was in it to win it. Dillons’ Jack Whittle released another sail. At 12:30, the team released another double-header followed by a release for McGarry and Jack Whittle. In total, the team had

eight sailfish releases for a first-place finish, a trophy and $1,000 in memory of Trapper John, a long-time tournament participant. Nick Stanczyk won the Outstanding Captain award and Mate Mike Varney took home the Outstanding Mate award. McGarry won first-place angler with four releases on time and a King Sailfish trophy. His name will be engraved on the JayAnna Cohan founder’s award, and he received a $500 check. Whittle released four fish on time. He received a Pasta Pantaleo print for second-place angler. The OV fishing aboard the Buzz On finished second. The team, consisting of Becca Britto, Lee Cash, Brittany Violette and Butch Comeforo, had four releases. Anglers from Chef Michaels, Ashli Kristin and Kim Tomic and teammates aboard the Cloud Nine took home the third-place bar trophy. “The reason JayAnna Cohan started this tournament was because she loved to sailfish and she wanted others to have the same opportunity,” said Dianne Harbaugh, tournament director. “I would like to extend a special thank you to all the local businesses who helped to support this event for our hard working bar and restaurant employees.” — Contributed

FLORIDA KEYS TABLE T
he Florida Keys boast some of the most iconic eateries and bars in the world. Creative culinary minds elevate local seafood to new levels and celebrate contemporary fusion, Cuban, Caribbean, Asian, French and other international influences. Our chain of islands is one of the world’s top food and drink destinations. But our magnetic appeal goes beyond the
ALEXA KEELER Sunset Lounge, Islamorada Added to the unique food and drink menu at Sunset Lounge is the stellar service provided by bartenders, waiters and waitresses. Take Alexa Keeler for instance. Originally from the Tampa area, she’s a 7-month resident of the Florida Keys. She said she enjoys the people who frequent the lounge. “The customers I meet are really cool people.” She also enjoys her fellow coworkers and the fun, family atmosphere management provides. What’s her favorite menu items? Keeler said it’s the cajun shrimp dip and the beef carpaccio. “I had a girl who didn’t eat meat. Her boyfriend ordered it and she absolutely loved it,” she said. When she’s not working, Keeler enjoys boating and grabbing some food at other local restaurants.
FOOD, DRINKS & PEOPLE menu. The skilled professionals who define our local hospitality industry do much more than mix creative cocktails and serve delicious meals. These hard-working men and women are ambassadors, social directors, travel advisors and unlicensed — but often effective — therapists. To celebrate our unique culinary culture, Keys Weekly brings you this bi-weekly feature
to highlight the food, libations and local personalities that define our “must-try” destinations across the Florida Keys. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a fifth-generation local, your options are endless. Indulge in something new or revisit a familiar favorite. And above all, support the local owners and loyal employees who are vital to our Keys communities.
DRAGONFRUIT MOJITO Hogfish Bar & Grill, Key West The best-tasting — and best-looking — take on the traditional Cuban mojito, this Dragonfruit Mojito at Hogfish Bar & Grill is a captivating red color with the unexpectedly fresh taste of dragonfruit. It also features the usual muddled mint, lime and rum.
BANG BANG SHRIMP Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House, Marathon These sweet and spicy fried and sauced shrimp are delectable enough to be a guilty pleasure all on their own. Served over a cheesy mound of seasoned potato wedges, they make an unlikely savory combo perfectly worthy of a cheat day on any diet.
