MARATHON’S SIGN CODE: A CLOSER LOOK Diving deeper into the city’s proposed overhauled ordinance
ALEX RICKERT
alex@keysweekly.com
P
ending its second public hearing and final approval at the regularly scheduled Marathon City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 8, the City of Marathon will have a new sign ordinance for 2022 and beyond. “Our existing sign code is seven years out of date,” City of Marathon Attorney Steve Williams told the council as he presented the rewritten ordinance at the Feb. 8 city council meeting, referencing a 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled all signs must be treated equally regardless of message content. The new ordinance classifies signs only as temporary or permanent, and establishes restrictions for each. It does not address the style, color or shape of signs. “If you have to read a sign to determine whether it is legal or not, your sign code is unlawful,” Williams said. He then urged the council to pass a new sign ordinance as quickly as possible to ward off state-level attempts to preempt the city’s ability to make its own laws. The proposed ordinance is heavily based on a similar code adopted by Monroe County in recent years, but tailored to Marathon’s specific needs and challenges. As currently proposed, the ordinance doesn’t require existing perma-
nent signs to be replaced. However, should ground- or building-mounted nonconforming signs (made so by the new ordinance) require maintenance, repair or replacement, the owner will have to apply first for a sign number, and then a permit. Temporary signs, however, will be affected immediately -- as soon as the proposed ordinance becomes law, possibly early March. Here are some other highlights of the ordinance that will require one more reading before it becomes official: 1. Pennants, flutter signs, wind activated banners, streamers, balloons, cold air inflatables or other fixed aerial signs used for commercial advertising are prohibited. 2. Signs that feature motion such as video or audio, including vehicles displaying electronic signs or what are essentially large screens, are prohibited. All messages on electronic signs must be static, although scrolling text and multiple cycling still images are allowed. 3. Vehicle signs (a sign mounted or painted on any vehicle, trailer, boat, etc.) parked on public property, including rights of ways or on private property, so as to be clearly visible from any public right-of-way, are also prohibited. However, vehicles that feature business signs, and are parked in front of the business in legal parking spots, are allowed. 4. The city has created a definition and rules for temporary signs that apply to event signs, election signs or yard sale signs. In residential neighborhoods, up to three temporary signs are allowed per parcel so long as they don’t exceed 6 square feet. Temporary signs will be allowed to be out for 60 days. In non-residential neighborhoods, the cumulative square footage of the three or fewer signs cannot exceed 12 square feet and the 60-day rule also applies. 5. The new ordinance also addresses what it calls discontinued signs; for example, signs for busi-
nesses that have moved or closed. The city may require the property owner to dismantle the sign structure and remove it completely if the property remains vacant for a period of time; however, decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis. 6. Signs over 40 square feet or more than 20 feet high must be designed by a state-registered engineer. Signs suspended from chains are prohibited. 7. The new ordinance contains provisions for the safe placement of signs as to not obstruct lines of sight at intersections, driveways and other areas of concern. Failure to follow these provisions could result in code violations. When the proposed sign code is passed, new sign sizes will be determined by location — on U.S.1 or a frontage road adjacent to U.S.1, or on a city road or shoreline — and whether it is single-sided or double-sided. For example, a parcel on a city side street with less than 151 feet of frontage may construct a new sign that is 40 square feet if it is single-sided or 80 square feet if it is double-sided. A parcel on U.S.1, with more than 300 feet of frontage, could construct a 200-square-foot sign, or a 400-square-foot doublesided sign. Marathon’s proposed sign ordinance makes exceptions for hospitals, corner lots, service stations, convenience stores, marinas, schools, churches, day care centers, individual charter boats and drive-through carryout services, among others. The full text of the original proposed ordinance, before edits agreed upon at the Feb. 8 meeting, is available at ci.marathon.fl.us under the “Meetings and Agendas” tab. The public will have another chance to comment on the ordinance at its second, and potentially final, hearing at the Marathon City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m. The revised ordinance will be available on the city’s website shortly before the meeting.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2022 The sun sets over the Everglades. CONTRIBUTED

WATER WAR ENSUES Opponents say Senate bill a threat to Everglades progress
A
petition has more than 37,400 signatures from opponents to a Senate bill that, they say, poses a threat to more clean water flowing south to the Everglades. The full Senate will now consider the proposal, which faces opposition from Gov. Ron DeSantis, environmental organizations and local Keys fishing guides. Senate Bill 2508, which surfaced from the Senate Appropriations Committee on Feb. 4, addresses funding decisions related to environmental resources in the Senate’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Before the release of state funds, the proposed bill requires the South Florida Water Management District to certify recommendations to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that do not “diminish the quantity of water available to existing legal users.” In addition, the bill authorizes use of state funds, originally set aside for the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir, also be used for the Lake Okeechobee Watershed — namely the C-43 West Basin Reservoir Storage project and the Indian River Lagoon-South project. On Feb. 9, the bill moved out of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee via a 16-4 vote. The bill goes before Senators for second reading on Thursday, Feb. 17. The earlier subcommittee meeting was the first chance the public had to voice comments on Senate Bill 2508. Many Keys fishing guides, including Matt Bellinger, ventured to Tallahassee to relay their concerns. A backcountry captain of 32 years, Bellinger told legislators how he saw the loss of 70,000 acres of seagrass inside Everglades National Park due to salinity issues in a two-day period. “It was a season of drought, but we had no water coming in. It was the same time water was being sent east and west to Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie canals, destroying their environment. If that was going to a reservoir, which is under construction, these things would have never happened,” he said. The legislation highlights an ongoing battle over Lake Okeechobee’s water supply in various parts of Florida. City of West Palm Beach officials are backing the Senate proposal, which
they say prioritizes water for nearly 130,000 residents, customers and visitors. Organizations like The Everglades Foundation and Captains for Clean Water, as well as Keys fishing guides, say the bill would reverse years of progress in Everglades restoration. According to the Everglades Foundation, the bill jeopardizes construction of the EAA Reservoir, which would send clean water south while reducing damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the east and west coasts. Also at risk is a balanced approach to water management reached through the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), which considers future Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan infrastructure that provides additional flexibility for lake operation. “The EAA reservoir is the crown jewel of Everglades restoration,” states the Everglades Foundation. “We cannot allow it to be jeopardized. There’s too much at stake. The Everglades Foundation will continue to fight to construct the EAA reservoir and reduce harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee.” As of Feb. 16, a total of 37,429 signatures were secured for a petition posted by Captains for Clean Water opposing Senate Bill 2508. The nonprofit organization, which fights to restore and preserve water resources, said the bill is bad policy with major consequences for Florida’s environment and economy. “This bill contains substantive pieces of policy legislation that were not heard in the legislative committee process and are being fast-tracked with virtually no accountability or transparency,” the organization said. “Among several harmful provisions, this bill would result in more harmful discharges that fuel toxic algae blooms, give preferential treatment to the water supply needs of the sugar industry, and threaten two critical components to solving south Florida’s water crisis: the EAA Reservoir and the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM).” State Sen. Ben Albritton, bill sponsor, said during the subcommittee meeting on Feb. 9 that those who spoke out against the bill were being misled. Albritton said the bill protects the EAA Reservoir. In addition, he acknowledged that the SFWMD’s budget is funded primarily by the state.
“Are you really telling me that because the state of Florida gives them 70% of their money, it’s unfair to ask for some more accountability from them?” he said. DeSantis said rather than advancing legislation to effect a major policy change, Senate Bill 2508 is being rammed through the budget process, short-circuiting public engagement and leaving affected agencies in the dark. A budget proposal by the governor contained $960 million for Everglades restoration, which brings the four-year investment to more than $3 billion. “I have been a champion for Everglades restoration and oppose any measure that derails progress on reducing harmful discharges and sending more water to the Everglades,” DeSantis said in a statement. “Moreover, I reject any attempt to deprioritize the EAA Reservoir project south of Lake Okeechobee.” Senate Appropriations chair Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, disagreed with DeSantis. “I do not think we’re ramming anything through the budget process,” she said. Capt. Steve Friedman, commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association, said he’s seen what mismanagement and lack of funding can do to the bays and estuaries. He and many other local guides traveled to the state capital having learned about the bill just before the subcommittee meeting. “You can see many of us rallied to let you know the importance of how we feel this will jeopardize not only our lives, but many lives of South Florida, including hotels, restaurants and many businesses,” he said. “I think what we need to do is look at it a little bit more closely and understand this is political strategy,” he continued. “And we’re seeing through this strategy. Last-minute filings like this that try to undermine what we've been working on for years, spending hundreds of hours coming up here fighting for clean water in Florida, and fighting for our livelihoods.” State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez told the Keys Weekly that she’s expressed her concerns to Senate leadership and was told a solution is in the works. “I don’t have any further details at the moment but was told the bill would improve significantly,” she said.

RENOVATIONS RULE THE DAY AT BOCC MEETING IMPROVEMENTS TO KEY WEST AIRPORT, LIBRARIES AND TRAFFIC DISCUSSED
THE END OF AN ERA Tom Hambright retires after 36 years as county historian

A
t the Feb. 16 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the overall theme was improvements, whether it was renovating Key West Airport’s Concourse A, introducing advanced technology into the library system or fixing traffic on the Stretch. David Strickland, the director of county airports, gave an update about the renovations at Key West airport’s Concourse A. He announced that he has been able to slice $2.4 million off the budget by making design decisions that are easier on the wallet: a virtual reality experience will replace an aquarium as a design element; terrazzo floors are being switched with a more cost-effective type of flooring; and a “spider glass” curtain wall of windows will be a cheaper two-panel window instead. Though the renovations of the concourse are still in the design phase, Strickland showed a video of what they will look like. After exiting their plane, passengers will walk through a virtual reality underwater “experience.” The star of the video caused some chuckles: a huge bar lining the wall of baggage claim. “You would be surprised how many arriving passengers talk about that,” said Strickland, in response to the laughs. “If they’re new to Key West and have never been before, they want their drink.” Library director Kimberly Matthews spoke about the new technology being introduced in the libraries as a result of a recent federal grant: $975,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act. Matthews said that new tech includes self-service machines for
printing, laptops and charging stations, and a holds locker that will be available 24/7 outside of the libraries. She also announced 24/7 stand-alone-unit libraries that will contain 340 books and DVDs. “The purpose is to provide service in underserved areas, like Stock Island and in the Tavernier area,” explained Matthews. She said staff is currently negotiating to lease a space next to the Tavernier Winn-Dixie. The unit will be available 24/7 and have an LCD screen in front. When Rice expressed concern about vandalism, Matthews replied that these units have scratch-proof exteriors and have been deployed across the country without any complaints of vandalism. Sheriff Rick Ramsay unexpectedly introduced a light moment when discussing his item: a request to ask FDOT for fencing or foliage at mile marker 109 on the Stretch. The reason? To prevent “lookey loos.” Evidently, this part of the stretch is called Bikini Beach, and traffic screeches to a halt so drivers and passengers can get an eyeful of the swimmers hanging out on the sand. So a barrier of some sort would prevent the slowdown of traffic by obstructing the view. “Although we are a scenic highway, that track is a little too scenic?” asked Mayor David Rice, with a chuckle. “Yes, it appears to be too scenic, Mr. Mayor,” replied the sheriff. He explained that during peak season traffic backs up two miles north and south on the Stretch and a lot of accidents happen as a result, causing police and fire-rescue services to be tied up. The board resolved to give Ramsey permission to ask FDOT for a visual barrier at MM 109, whether it’s foliage or a fence.
Monroe County Public Library Historian Tom Hambright, center, will retire on Feb. 23 after 36 years with the county. At the Feb. 16 Board of County Commissioners meeting, seen here, the board members decreed that Hambright is "Historian Emeritus." KRISTEN LIVENGOOD/Monroe County

nne L. Rice, assistant director of support services for Monroe County Public Library, will miss the way Tom Hambright delicately handled historical papers, such as the tattered love letters from a soldier. Michael Nelson, the library’s assistant director of public services, will miss his very presence — the way he came into the library every day during COVID, even during the closures, wearing a tie along with his mask. “There will be a void in the Florida History Room without doubt,” Key West author and ghost hunter David Sloan said. “But Tom earned his retirement a thousand times over. Tom’s retirement marks the end of an era.” The Board of County Commissioners agrees. Hambright will be retiring on Wednesdsay, Feb. 23 — his 84th birthday — after 36 years with the county as a historian. So in his honor, the board decreed that he is now Historian Emeritus in a ceremony at their Feb. 16 meeting. Hambright spoke to Keys Weekly after the ceremony. “It’s satisfying, but it’s going to be boring,” he confided with a laugh. “But I’m turning 84.” He said his favorite part of the job was “when you find something new.” As an example, he excitedly talked about new documents that he discovered recently while researching the 200th anniversary of Key West. He was reading papers that described the events of March 25, 1822, when U.S. Navy Lt. Matthew Perry planted the American flag on island soil. Hambright learned from a document that Key West founding father John W. C. Fleming attended this flag raising and sang a song. “And we didn’t know this before,” he said, with a gleam in his eye. The fact that he still digs through documents jives with his passion for
history, according to Alex Vega. Vega founded the Key West Firehouse Museum in 1991 and received a lot of help from Hambright with research. The two became friends. “His passion for history rubs off on you,” Vega said. “He used to go on vacation and go to the National Archives in D.C., just researching things about Key West. Who has that time to do that? But I found myself on a few similar trips, all because of him.” “Tom's legacy is so huge it's hard to capture, but I'd say it's one of tirelessly preserving and incredibly generous sharing the history of the Keys in so many different ways,” said Nancy Klingener, reporter for WLRN and a former coworker of his at the library. She complimented his archiving of local history. “The newsletters of the Key West Maritime Historical Society are our local historical journal,” she continued. “And more recently the publicly accessible image archive on Flickr has brought the history of the Keys to the world — way more people than could ever make it to the little library on Fleming Street.” And Sloan credits Hambright with changing his life. “When I moved to Key West in 1996 to start the original ghost tour, no one was talking about ghosts,” Sloan said. “No books in the library, no one telling stories on the streets. I packed up my car and was ready to leave town when something told me to go back to the Florida History Room. Tom Hambright was there. I told him I was looking for a book on ghosts, and without looking up, he said, ‘There are none.’ As I turned to leave, he looked up and said, ‘No ghost books, but we have plenty of ghosts.’ Tom disappeared into the vault and returned with a folder full of newspaper clippings related to Key West’s haunted history. That moment changed the course of my life. I can’t imagine where I might have ended up were it not for Tom.”

Record-breaking athlete skates the Keys for water charity

ere in the Florida Keys, there are many badasses, and we’ve had the privilege at Keys Weekly to write about many of them. But ultra endurance athlete Katie Spotz — who may actually be Rollerblading by your neighborhood as you read this — takes badassery to the next level. This week, with friend Hannah Sleight, 34-year-old Spotz is in-line skating the entire Florida Keys, roughly 31 miles a day (the length of an ultra marathon), to bring awareness to H2O for Life. She started on Monday, Feb. 14, in Key Largo’s Ocean Reef, and she plans on rolling into Key West on Thursday, Feb. 17. And we’ll be sitting here eating Valentine’s Day chocolate while watching her livestreams on her Facebook page, @ hellokatiespotz. We checked her progress via text on Feb 15: “We are almost at Marathon!” she texted us. “It’s been quite the adventure but we are finding our groove and feeling strong. Plus we have some very nice tailwind at the moment!” And you can add “texting while Rollerblading” to her long list of accomplishments, which also include: completing five ironman triathlons; cycling across America; while rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean, she set a world record for the youngest-ever solo ocean rower and first American to row from Africa to South America; and, in June 2021, winning a Guinness World Record — “Most consecutive days to run an ultra marathon distance (female)” — by running an ultra marathon for 11 consecutive days in June 2021, from Cleveland to Cincinnati. But Spotz isn’t doing all this for the glory. “I’m most passionate about the work that H2O for Life is doing,” she said. “It’s a nonprofit that helps inspire action to fight the global water crisis.”
As an ambassador for H2O for Life, she is using her athletic adventures to raise awareness about the global water crisis while providing funds for water, sanitation and hygiene education for a partner school in a developing country. Spotz hopes that through the Skate4Water project in the Keys, she will inspire action to support a school community in Haiti. For example, her 11-day ultra marathon adventure in June was also to bring H2O for Life to the public eye and to fund 11 water projects in Uganda. The project was called Run4Water. She has another Run4Water project planned for later in the year: running across an entire country in South America with the goal of funding one clean water project. Spotz’s goal is to raise $1 million for water projects — giving kids a chance to stay in school and get an education instead of fetching water all day. Her awareness about the global water crisis was raised when she was attending college in Australia. The country was in the middle of a 10-year drought. A professor in one of her classes said, “The wars of the future will be fought over water.” Spotz never forgot what he said. “The more I found out, the more I was shocked — there are a billion people without clean water. And there are solutions. I think everyone can agree it’s a basic human right,” she said. She chose her project Skate4Water to be in the Florida Keys for a simple reason that inspires many to visit: “It’s nice to be somewhere warm,” she said. She also enjoys the symbolism of skating next to water. “And it’s flat,” she said, with a laugh. To make a donation to her campaign, go to Skate4Water.com. L
et it be known to all of Florida: Marathon High School is home to a state champion. MHS senior Rylan Chapa won the coveted title at the Florida state championships for girls weightlifting, held from Feb. 10-12 in Port St. Joe, FL. Supported by funds from the Katharine S. Gradick Girls Athletic Trust, Chapa and fellow lifter Allie Brabenec made the trip to the panhandle to go toe to toe with the best Florida has to offer. By the end of the weekend, her 100-pound lift bested all contestants in the 101-pound weight class to claim the individual crown in the snatch competition. She also earned a second medal in the traditional event, claiming bronze in her weight class by pairing a 110-pound bench press with a 130-pound clean and jerk. “It feels really weird,” said Chapa. “People had said I was ranked first going in, but I was like, ‘Oh, we’ll see what happens.’” Chapa’s self-described “last hurrah” comes after three years of lifting. When she first moved to the Keys from Texas, she combined her lifts with soccer and softball practices. However, as her prowess in the weight room
grew, she elected to focus on the sport more exclusively. “I did soccer and weight lifting at the same time last year, and I went to the state competition and got sixth place,” Chapa said. “This year, I decided to just go for weightlifting.” Rylan credits her achievements to the willingness of her coaches Jessie Schubert and Michele James to match her dedication and drive. “I love Schubert,” said Chapa. “We’re pretty much here every day of the week, even on weekends. I’ll be like, ‘Hey, do you want to go work out? Because I want to go work out.’ We’ll come here, or we’ll go to the bridge and go running or something like that.” Chapa’s parents Phillip and Jenna can attest to Rylan’s commitment and its ability to inspire others. “We’re happy, because it taught her dedication,” said Jenna. “And now, because of her, we’re in the gym six days a week.” “It made us feel inadequate,” said Phillip. “(Rylan) does everything you ask of her, and she does it with a smile,” said Schubert. “She’s fun to be around as a person and as an athlete. And anything I throw at her, she’s like, ‘Yes. Let’s do it.’”
Chapa entered the state meet as one of the favorites to take the title in her weight class. But by her coach’s estimation, she barely felt the pressure. “We’ve been to this meet with other girls, and there are a lot of nerves,” Schubert admitted. “But this one, she’s just bouncing around. This is her thing. There’s no nerves, there’s just excitement and happiness.” Chapa handles whatever nerves she may have with a highly regimented, if slightly unconventional, game day routine: she wears her alien socks and flower shorts for every competition, pairs a Rice Krispie treat with coffee for breakfast, and eats a Kind bar between lifts. And once it’s all over? “I’m done with weigh-ins and everything, so I eat so much candy.” Rylan plans to attend Georgia Tech in the fall, where she hopes to continue her lifting as a club sport. Pressed for words of wisdom as she addressed the student body at MHS’ victory party celebrating her achievements, Rylan used only two. “Don’t suck.”

MHS STUDENT HAS EARNED STRAIGHT A’S SINCE FIRST GRADE
K
Cheerleading is one of Marathon HIgh School honor student Tinashay Cunningham’s many activities, which include track and band. CONTRIBUTED
eys Weekly heard from Monroe County School District staff that Tinashay Cunningham, a 14-year-old 8th grader at Marathon High School, is an exceptional student. Intrigued, we asked her for an interview, and she was excited. But scheduling the conversation was another matter. Due to all her school activities, she’s busier than the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Meanwhile, we spoke to Christina Rodriguez, the assistant principal of Marathon High School, about Tinashay. “I’ve had the pleasure of being Tinashay’s assistant principal since she was in first grade at Switlik Elementary,” she wrote to us in an email. “Since then, Tinashay has been a strong female leader. In fifth grade, she became the president of student council and served as a leader for her peers. Tinashay has always excelled in academics and in sports. She has earned all A’s since first grade, has won multiple reading awards and has motivated her peers to follow her path to success. She’s a driven young lady with a strong determination to succeed and one day attend Harvard University.” Tinashay’s mother, Georgina, agreed that Tinashay is a determined young woman. “She’s very dedicated and hardworking,” she told Keys Weekly. “And disciplined and very friendly. She likes to make sure things are going perfect and to do things ahead, like homework and preparing for a family trip,” she said with a laugh. “And we taught her to be nice even when others aren’t.” Here are Tinashay’s answers to Keys Weekly’s questions: You’re very busy. What’s a typical day like? I get up at 5:45 or 6 a.m., then I go to school at 7:30 a.m. After school, on Tuesdays I have Champions for Change, a group where we talk about drug prevention and spreading the word about that. Mondays and Wednesdays, I have cheer in Key West, and Thursdays I have dance. And I have track every day. What did you think about Netflix’s “Cheer”? I liked it. I liked Gabi Butler. It was fun to watch the cool flips and tricks.
What courses do you take? I take all advanced classes. I’m in algebra honors. I’m in 8th grade, and that’s a high school class. And also advanced science. I’m also in high school band — I play the flute. I’m also president of SGA — the Student Government Association. What do you want to be when you grow up? A cardiologist. It seems cool to learn about hearts. And “Grey’s Anatomy” is my favorite. And I love (surgeon) Cristina Yang — she’s my favorite character. Whom do you credit for your success? God and my family. What would you say to other children of color who are having problems and/or unmotivated in school? Reach out to teachers and counselors, because they can provide them with additional contacts and support they need. What can white people do to support people of color? They can have an open mind when people of color speak about injustices they face and use that education to advocate for equal opportunity. If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be? For everyone to watch “Grey’s Anatomy.” But also, if everyone can be nice to each other and show respect. What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Teleportation. So if you want to travel somewhere, you can just get there. Because going to cheer competitions in Orlando, the drives are so long. You can just teleport there. I just want to get there fast. What makes you laugh? Anything. I laugh at anything (said while laughing). The hardest part about being a kid is… Having to follow rules? I don’t know. I like being a kid. Anything else you’d like to tell the readers? Read a book by (young adult fiction writer) Colleen Hoover. Her books are nice to read, and I think the ones that are the best give different aspects of topics and situations. I think reading helps you and is fun.

MARATHON WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 17, 2022 A pair of oddly colored cattle egrets seen this week in Marathon. MARK HEDDEN/Keys Weekly
ADVENTURES WITH IMPROPERLY COLORED BIRDS
MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.
(Editor’s Note: We get it. A column discussing color appears on a black-and-white page. While color pages are limited in the print edition, all of Mark Hedden’s columns and striking photos are available in full color at keysweekly.com.)
W
hen I first pulled up I thought I was seeing a half-dozen young roseate spoonbills. This was on the side road that parallels the runway at Marathon airport, and it would have been kind of ironic, because I’d just spent a couple days up in the Everglades, where spoonbills are supposed to be this time of year, and I didn’t manage to see any. After a moment, though, I realized I wasn’t seeing pink but orange, a forgivable confusion, as they are both colors that can be found in a bowl of Fruit Loops, and the hues and intensities are pretty similar. The birds were on the runway side of the fence and their orange was not as intense as, say, an orange-grove orange, but something closer to an apricot or a peach, or a hybrid of the two. (Apparently there is a stone fruit called a peachcot, which is a hybrid of a peach and an apricot, but whose color is a little too yellow to describe the birds.) Besides their color, the six birds were shaped differently than spoonbills, which look like weirdly glamorous flying dinosaurs. Cattle egrets may be the least elegant wading bird on the planet. On their best days they look kind of scrappy, but most of the time they look like they’re punching the clock at a 40-hour-a-week middle-management gig in the wading bird union, which was the only position they could find after graduating bird college. Also, cattle egrets are about two-thirds the size of roseate spoonbills. And their bills don’t look like spoons so much as square-cut masonry nails. As a general rule, cattle egrets are white. In breeding season they can develop brown patches on the breast and back, as well as the back of the head and neck. (They’re one of the few species that go earth-toned to attract a mate.) But I’d never seen full body coloration like that before. What immediately came to mind was a series of photos from a few years ago of a “curry gull” in England that looked very similar. The “curry gull,” it turned out, was not a species previously unknown to science, but a regular old herring gull that had somehow gotten into a bag of curry powder or turmeric – nobody is sure which and apparently no one tasted the bird to see – and dyed itself a similar shade of orange. I wondered if it was possible for six cattle egrets to somehow fall into a bag of curry powder, or possibly turmeric, but it seemed unlikely, as there are not many Indian restaurants in the Keys. (Though if you haven’t tried the recently opened Tikka Bar on Greene Street, you should. It’s really good.) Also, birds’ feathers
require a lot of maintenance and preening in order to stay functional, and you could see in the photos of the curry gull that its feathers were all gunked up. So much so that it had to be captured and cleaned by the local wildlife rescue people. Researchers trying to understand bird behavior will sometimes catch and dye their subjects, but they tend to choose unnatural looking colors – I saw a pink Peregrine falcon once – and birds that were being studied that way would also, most likely, have metal or plastic bands on their legs. My field guide pointed out that some cattle egrets do on occasion show more extensive brown patches in breeding season, but the illustrations showed them covering about a third of their body, not all of it. When I got home and did further reading, I saw some references to orange or peach-colored birds being seen in twos or threes on rare occasions in South Florida. Also, records of aberrant plumage birds in India. (Cattle egrets were originally from Asia and Africa, but have been spreading themselves around the globe in recent centuries. They first appeared in the U.S. in 1953 and have extended their range all the way to California and Canada since.) David Sibley, author of the “Sibley Guide to Birds,” has a blog where he muses somewhat informally about things ornithological. He wrote two blog entries about peachy-orange cattle egrets in 2012 after readers sent him photos of birds similar to the ones I saw. Sibley pointed out that while most birds get their breeding plumage by molting dull feathers and replacing them with more brightly pigmented ones, cattle egrets do it differently (as do some parrots, some other herons, as well as birds in the tinamou and bustard families). Their dark feathers come from something called cosmetic coloration. Cattle egrets have special down feathers that disintegrate at the exposed ends into a dark, slightly oily talcum-like substance known as powder-down. Unlike most feathers, powder-down feathers grow continually, kind of like human hair. The birds spread this through their other feathers as breeding season approaches, and this tints the feathers into their more eye-catching hues. Sibley speculated that the full-body coloration may be the result of the bird over-producing the oils in its powder-down, and the color therefore spreading. Seeing six similarly aberrant birds at the same time makes me speculate that excessively oily powder-down may be a genetic trait, since how else could you explain such a cluster of oddly colored birds? But that’s speculating upon someone else’s speculation, which feels like some pretty shaky ground. It might be the kind of thing there’s never a clear answer to. Unless someone opened an Indian restaurant in the Middle Keys I don’t know about.

ADDERLEY TOWN Family legacy lives on Key Vaca
The George Adderley House at Crane Point. WIKIMEDIA/Contributed
T
he oldest house in the Florida Keys, outside of Key West, takes a bit of effort to find. It is in the woods of Marathon, on Key Vaca, at Crane Point Hammock. The house was built by George Adderley, who, circa 1890, at 20 years of age, left his life in the Bahamas behind and moved to the Florida Keys. Before building his house on Key Vaca, he lived on what has been described as Matecumbe Key, which probably indicates Upper Matecumbe Key, where the small farming community of Matecumbe was developing. He married his wife, Olivia, in 1896. In 1902, he and his wife moved to Key Vaca, settling in a virgin sub-tropical hammock on the gulf side of the island where, the following year, he purchased 32.25 acres for $100. Adderley would clear land and begin to build his house, a rectangular masonry vernacular structure with a hip roof covered in pressed tin. A homemade form of concrete called tabby held the masonry together. The mixture was created by burning shells, in this case, conch shells, to extract lime. The lime was then mixed with water, sand, ash and crushed shells until the sticky “concrete” paste was formed. The house, built circa 1906, resembled a typical rural Bahamian home. Around George and Olivia and their adopted daughter, Louisa Smith, the small black community of Adderley Town grew. Five homes were built in the area, though Adderley’s is the only surviving structure. The community worked as fishermen, spongers and charcoal makers. When making charcoal, buttonwood was the preferred tree. The late Florida historian Charleon Tebeau described the process:
“Great cone-shaped heaps of neatly stacked wood were built up, sometimes containing as much as ten cords for a single burning. This was then covered with grass and sand to make it airtight except for a vent at the top. Enough openings were made around the bottom to fire the wood and burn it so as to drive out the volatile gasses and leave charcoal. A cord of wood produced ten bags of charcoal for which there was a ready market.” By the time Adderley had built his home, the Key West Extension of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway was making tracks for Key West. Although the train would not reach Key West until 1912, by 1908, daily rail service had been established between Miami and the temporary terminus at Knights Key, three miles away at what is today considered the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge. The right-of-way ran through Adderley’s property and, in exchange for him selling the land required for the rightof-way, the F.E.C. agreed to create a stop at Adderley Town. The only railroad depot located on Key Vaca was the Marathon Station, once found in the vicinity of what is 33rd Street today. At Adderley Town, the railroad built a platform and created a flag stop. Once a week, as the train was roaring across Key Vaca, if the engineer saw the flag raised at the Adderley Town platform, he would stop. Among the residents of Adderley Town, according to the 1910 U.S. Census, were the Adderley family, and Joseph and Margret Curry and their adopted son Joseph Butler. Joseph Rigby lived on nearby Old Rachel Key with the community’s lone non-Bahamian family, David and Janet Freeman, from South Carolina. Three men were identified living in a
schooner anchored off Old Rachel Key. George and Olivia Adderley would sell their property to Francis and Mary Crane in 1949. Olivia died the following year, and her body was laid to rest at the Key West Cemetery. George would BRAD be living in Key West, at a BERTELLI home for the blind, when he passed in 1958. He, too, is an author, speaker, and Flor- is buried at the island’s ida Keys historian. cemetery. His latest book, The legacy they “The Florida Keys unknowingly left behind Skunk Ape Files,” continues to stand and is a fun blend of two of his favorite contribute to the rich hissubjects — Florida tory of the Florida Keys. Keys history and The Adderley House is part the Skunk Ape. of the Florida Black History Trail, developed in partnership with the Florida Division of Historical Resources and a group of invested citizens. The subsequent pamphlet they produced provides a microcosm of African American landmarks and legacies. Among the points of interest presented in the guide is the Adderley House, found at its original location at Crane Point Hammock at 5550 Overseas Highway. In 1992, George’s tabby house of vernacular construction became listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is the only house like it still standing in the Florida Keys. When visiting the site, it is possible to step inside and experience the home and an incredible piece of Florida Keys history on a personal level.

PERCEIVING PERCEPTION
I
watched the portlight at the end of my bed start to glow with sunlight. The sight of it rousted my senses, so I immediately got up and started the coffee pot. Settled into the cockpit with hot Joe, I watched the sunrise over the harbor. I love this time of day. It’s really quiet, there is no boating traffic yet, the wife is snug in bed with that funny little snore of hers and all is right with the world, as the view of the CAPT. MIKE palm trees turns from silhouettes to their full BARBER color. The season has started in earnest here Capt’n Mike has and the harbor is nearly full already. The view an undergraduate makes me laugh at myself. Many people idoldegree in marine ize my lifestyle, and don’t get me wrong, I do technology and 50 years of sailing too. But perceptions are funny things. Looking the oceans of the around, what I actually see, if I had to be honworld. Currently, est, is a fiberglass trailer court or RV park. As he visits the the day wears on there will be more traffic and Florida Keys reefs the constant rumbling noise of generators until conducting eco well after dark. Instead of cars in the driveway, tours. we have dinghies tied up alongside our fiberglass home. The only real distinction here is the constant, vigilant practice of seamanship. Wind shifts, weather changes and tide and current awareness keep us on our toes. From time to time the entire harbor will go from peaceful paradise to wet and exciting in a single puff of wind. I like being anchored or on a mooring at the edge of a harbor for the simple reason that I can turn my back to the crowd and pretend they are not there. This morning is no exception. Turning my back and enjoying the sunrise over the uninhabited mangroves gives me the perception of having the whole place to myself. I don’t have any hermitic penchants, but I don’t travel by boat to be with the other boaters either. Interfacing with other cruisers is integral for several reasons, not the least of which is that we often have to rely on each other, and many of them provide valuable information for future destinations. But I want to see new lands, new cultures and new foods and add to my awareness some things that I was unaware of beforehand. Paradise is in the perception of what you are trying to perceive. For me, that means I can find paradise in any harbor. Truly secluded harbors — the ones where you can be naked topside and while swimming, the ones where you can drift fish in the dinghy all day and never see another boat — these harbors are becoming extinct. These gems really do still exist, but GPS is making them harder to find. So, my perceptions have had to be adjusted along the way. I know better than to begrudge the change. I know how to embrace it to preserve my place in paradise. So get off the dock and meet me out here. Bring beer and some ice if you have a way to keep it cold. Capt’n Mike www.Whensday.us

he Keys Weekly family loves animals as much as our friends at the Florida Keys SPCA do, and we’re thrilled each week to showcase some “furever” friends that are ready, waiting and available for adoption at the organization’s Marathon campus. From cats and dogs to Guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, reptiles and birds, the perfect addition to your family is waiting for you at one of the SPCA’s two campuses, in Key West and Marathon. The SPCA’s knowledgeable staff will help with advice and care tips while working to ensure a good fit between each pet and its people. The SPCA’s Golden Paw program also provides special assistance with vet bills and medications for special-needs and older animals that require a little extra TLC. Check out Keys Weekly each week for just a few of the animals waiting for a home and see them all at fkspca.org. he Florida Keys may not be the most hospitable environment for dirt bike racing, but that can’t stop these islands from producing a champion. Enter Rilynn Richards, a 12-year-old Marathon rider currently atop the state leaderboard for the Florida Trail Riders’ 65cc girls class. The organization supports motorcycle and ATV racing for groups of all ages, offering dozens of races over multiple weekends during a season that runs from October through April. Richards’ love for the sport was born in recent years and began when her father Jason, an FWC officer and rider himself, bought her a small electric dirt bike. “At first, I was like, ‘no,’ but he ordered it for me anyway, so I started riding it around the neighborhood,” said Rilynn. “It really just started with that, and then we got a Yamaha 50cc bike and started to go to Miami to ride around a little bit.” A visit to Croom Motorcycle Area in central Florida, Jason’s old stomping grounds, soon turned Rilynn from a hobbyist into a racer at the age of 10. “I just started riding around there, and then we found out there were races that go on. I got second or third place in the first race I did, and then it just kind of went from there. We started really racing the next season.” Rilynn’s preferred race format is known as a “hare scramble,” a three-lap race averaging between six and 10 miles per lap. Typical races run for an hour and a half over tracks with varied terrain, including sections of fields, narrow wooded passages and motocross features. Her parents and friends typically only see her once every half hour as she comes through spectator areas or takes a speedy pit stop for fuel, equipment swap-outs, or a dousing with cold water on hot days.

“Every time there’s a race, we pack up the camper, go up there and meet up with people from all over the state,” said Rilynn’s mother Melissa, a radiology manager at Fishermen’s Community Hospital. “It’s been a great experience to get exposed to something other than what happens here in the Keys.” Though the Keys’ corrosive salty environment and lack of tracks prohibit Rilynn from practicing at home, her involvement with school sports keeps her in shape for the grueling contests. With eight of this season’s 10 races under her belt, and first- or second-place finishes in most, she leads her class in total points for the season. It’s a spot she has no plans to relinquish, as long as she can hold off a late surge from her rival Alaina Faneuf. With two races remaining, Richards holds a 21-point lead over Faneuf, 336-315. “I’m pretty competitive about dirt bike racing, so what I like about it is winning, obviously,” said Rilynn. “Every time it’s the same girl behind me, or she’s in front of me and I’m right behind her. She beat me in the last race by three seconds.” “We’re super proud, but every time she’s about to cross the finish line, my heart is pounding,” said Melissa. “It’s always just a matter of seconds.” Asked if she had advice to other female riders or those curious about the sport, Rilynn’s answer was simple: “Do it. It’s a cool sport, and it’s a lot of fun to get out there, make some friends and spend time with your family.”

he most romantic day of the year just got so much sweeter for three lucky couples. On Feb. 14, three engaged pairs whose wedding plans were postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic met on the sands of Marathon’s Courtyard Marriott for a Valentine’s Day beachside elopement. The couples were chosen from more than 60 entrants who submitted their wedding postponement stories for the hotel’s contest to win a free elopement ceremony. After dozens of couples contacted the hotel with heartbreaking tales in the years since the pandemic began, Courtyard was inspired to step in and lend a hand. “We feel so lucky to be in the Florida Keys with lots of fresh air and natural beauty,” said Kristy Harvey, the hotel’s director of sales. “We wanted to give something back and share in their love.” “I was considered essential during the pandemic and never stopped working,” said Allison Fielder, who married her husband Ryan on the beach. “Ryan was put on leave several times. Afraid of what I could be bringing home, there were many days and nights where we chose to isolate ourselves from each other. We were trying to plan the day we wanted, but between financial situations and the current spikes, I feared our day may never get here. This was a chance of a lifetime that we will never forget.”

he Florida Keys boast some of the most iconic eateries and bars in the world. Creative culinary minds elevate local seafood to new levels and celebrate contemporary fusion, Cuban, Caribbean, Asian, French and other international influences. Our chain of islands is one of the world’s top food and drink destinations. But our magnetic appeal goes beyond the
ALEXA KEELER Sunset Lounge, Islamorada Added to the unique food and drink menu at Sunset Lounge is the stellar service provided by bartenders, waiters and waitresses. Take Alexa Keeler for instance. Originally from the Tampa area, she’s a 7-month resident of the Florida Keys. She said she enjoys the people who frequent the lounge. “The customers I meet are really cool people.” She also enjoys her fellow coworkers and the fun, family atmosphere management provides. What are her favorite menu items? Keeler said it’s the cajun shrimp dip and the beef carpaccio. “I had a girl who didn’t eat meat. Her boyfriend ordered it and she absolutely loved it,” she said. When she’s not working, Keeler enjoys boating and grabbing some food at other local restaurants.

These hard-working men and women are ambassadors, social directors, travel advisors and unlicensed — but often effective — therapists. To celebrate our unique culinary culture, Keys Weekly brings you this bi-weekly feature
to highlight the food, libations and local personalities that define our “must-try” destinations across the Florida Keys. DRAGON FRUIT MOJITO Hogfish Bar & Grill, Key West The best-tasting — and best-looking — take on the traditional Cuban mojito, this Dragon Fruit Mojito at Hogfish Bar & Grill is a captivating red color with the unexpectedly fresh taste of dragon fruit. BANG BANG SHRIMP Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House, Marathon These sweet and spicy fried and sauced shrimp are delectable enough to be a guilty pleasure all on their own. A SPLIT DECISION MHS tennis opens season with one win, one loss

n Feb. 11, the Marathon High School boys and girls tennis teams opened their slate of home matches with contests against Westminster Christian School. The teams split the matches, with the Marathon girls team earning their first victory of the season while the boys fell to the Warriors. “We were excited as the girls got their first win of the season,” said head coach Kevin Freeman. “Led by senior Lilian Guo, the girls won 5-2. Malena Rocafort and Marguisha Abraham also won their singles matches, and then Marathon swept the doubles match with Lilian and Malena winning 8-1 and Marquisha and Clare Merryman winning 8-2. On the boys side, we lost 6-1. The lone win came from the doubles team of Adrian Holdinga and Mikele Rocafort.” Marathon will take to the courts on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2:45 p.m. for a hometown rivalry match against Key West. — Alex Rickert

On Feb. 12, the cast and crew of Marathon Community Theatre’s “Sunset Village” enjoyed a rare occasion: a visit from their show’s original playwright, Michael Presley Bobbitt. A native of Gainesville, Bobbitt made the trip to the Keys exclusively to see the final performance months after video chatting with the cast on their first day of rehearsals. “I have never seen an audience react so thoroughly and loudly and joyfully to one of my plays as these crazy islanders,” Bobbitt wrote on Facebook. “Jackie O’Neil directed a stellar production that surprised me in multiple places and delighted me throughout. …This (production) in the Keys will always be the first one that went up without me, and I will never forget these people or the way they made me feel. Bravo!” LARRY BENVENUTI/Keys Weekly.

PREPARED FOR THE WORST
First responders collaborate in disaster drill at Marathon airport
O
n Feb. 15, first responders throughout Monroe County came together at the Marathon airport for a full-scale disaster drill. Required by the Federal Aviation Administration, the event takes place in Marathon every three years. The drill was a collaborative effort among Monroe County Emergency Management, Marathon Fire Rescue, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol and numerous other local and federal agencies. More than 30 volunteers lent their time to help these agencies prepare for future airport emergencies. “The lessons we learn from the response to this realistic scenario are invaluable,” said Marathon airport manager Micheal Legere. — Alex Rickert Photos by Barry Gaukel. Inaugural EhlersDanlos syndrome charity golf tournament raises $5,000
4
O
n Feb. 13, teams of golfers took to the course at the Florida Keys Country Club for the inaugural EhlersDanlos syndrome golf tournament presented by Keys Community Construction. Estimated to affect up to 30% of the population with varying severity, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a painful connective tissue disorder for which there is currently no treatment or cure. Those who suffer from the disease may have ligaments and tendons that tear easily, aneurysms, and organ ruptures, among other complications. “EDS isn’t all that uncommon, but the problem is, it’s not known,” said Beth Lazzara, who organized the tournament with her husband Derrick. Beth suffers from the syndrome along with her three daughters. “Many people are misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Our whole goal is to increase awareness and get this out there.” Half of the money raised by the tournament will go to the national Ehlers-Danlos Society to fund awareness and research initiatives, while the other half will stay with the Florida Keys Ehlers Danlos Society, a recently established nonprofit. “Our long-term goal is to have enough funds to assist those who end up in wheelchairs and need assistance putting elevators in their homes,” said Lazzara. She added that the organization is also looking to establish a support group with a therapist, and will look to repeat this tournament in both Marathon and Key West. “The biggest reason we wanted to set this up was to help other families like ours,” said Lazzara. “We’ve gone through it now for a number of years, so we’re able to share that knowledge and experience with other families.” — Alex Rickert
