ey West could cancel cruise ships at the two piers it controls, capitulate to their continued use of the privately operated Pier B and seek possible concessions from Pier B’s operators with regard to ship size, capacity and frequency.

It’s an outcome many Key West residents have suggested and expected for more than a year, in light of the anticipated lawsuits that would stem from restricting private-sector business. But it wasn’t mentioned officially until the Feb. 15 city commission meeting, when Key West’s cruise ship debate continued with fruitful discussions, but no decisions.

The Key West Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships, which led the movement to reduce cruise ships in Key West, drafted a resolution that was added to Tuesday’s agenda the day before the meeting, but then withdrawn at the request of SCS for revisions. At least two community members also opposed the late timing of the resolution that did not give the public ample time to review it.

That resolution would prohibit the city from allowing any cruise ship activity at the piers it controls, Mallory Pier and the Outer Mole, which the city leases from the Navy.

Under that proposal, Key West would forgo all cruise ship revenues derived from its two piers, including any smaller ships that meet the voter-approved criteria, in order to avoid “two-ship days” that would see a large ship at Pier B and a smaller ship at Mallory. The city retains 100% of revenues from Mallory Pier, and receives 25% of Pier B’s cruise ship revenues.

“We’ve heard again and again that the city can do whatever it wants with its two piers, but it cannot dictate how Pier B operates its business,” Arlo Haskell, treasurer of Safer Cleaner Ships, said at the meeting. “So if the city can’t dictate terms of business operations at Pier B, then the city just simply cannot operate — so long as a ship with 2,000 passengers is at Pier B, on that date, you can’t have any passengers at any city property without overflowing the 1,500-person limit approved by voters. … I think we all know we’re still going to see the very large ships at Pier B.”

Commissioners also withdrew the long-awaited cruise ship ordinance, drafted by outside attorney Ed Pozzuoli and the Tripp Scott Law Firm, from Tuesday’s agenda following public outcry about its failure to address the voter-approved ship size and capacity limits.

Pozzuoli explained that the draft ordinance was not designed to address the limits desired by supporters of Safer Cleaner Ships. Such restrictions can’t be imposed on the privately operated Pier B by an ordinance, but rather by amending the existing contract between the city and Pier B. continued on page 7

loth-covered tables filled the first- and third-base lines and the area behind home plate on Feb. 12 night at Key West High School’s Rex Weech Field. Red and white balloons adorned the conch shells and baseballs that were the centerpieces on each table.

Chef Martin Liz served a buffet dinner as former and future Conch baseball players, plus about 200 parents, coaches and supporters, gathered for the Dinner on the Diamond fundraiser for Key West baseball programs while preparing for Friday’s Opening Day of the high school baseball season.

“You’ve got a group of guys here who are going to put the uniform on next Friday and continue the tradition of Conch baseball,” organizer Jack Niles said of the 2022 varsity team, after he had introduced former Conch baseball greats, including major leaguer Boog Powell, who played for the Baltimore Orioles.

Former Conch and Major League Baseball umpire Rich Garcia was the keynote speaker.

Ben Harrison, a former state champion Conch who was named one of the University of Florida’s all-time Top 10 baseball players, also spoke.

Rick Lopez, general manager of Florida Keys Media radio stations and the Conchs radio announcer, introduced 1998 state champion Conch Christian Twyman.

“He was a scrappy ballplayer,” Lopez said. “Nothing was getting by this kid, no matter what. And

Chas Spottswood, who went to the College World Series, was there, along with state champ Bill Spottswood and Conch baseball legend Sam Holland Sr. The event was a Who’s Who of Key West baseball, with too many stars to name.

“I just want to say how special this place is. When we won the state championship here, diving on that dog pile with all your best friends, nothing beats those memories,” Harrison told this year’s varsity squad, who were at the dinner in their red-and-white pinstripe jerseys. Coach Ralph Henriquez introduced each varsity player, after his son, Ralphie Henriquez, introduced the younger players who make up a sort of farm team for the high school Conchs.

“This community raises us up as a whole. The people here are beautiful, inside and out, and it’s made me the man I am today,” Twyman said.

“This is a two-piece process,” Pozzuoli said. “We’ve laid out a base ordinance that gets the city involved in environmental regulation for cruise ships, and then we began discussions with Pier B to amend its agreement with the city.” Those discussions have included the topics of ship size, frequency, black-out dates and scheduling to possibly include longer, nighttime or overnight visits to enable cruise ship passengers to patronize more and different businesses in town.

Pozzuoli and his team have been discussing potential changes with Pier B owner Mark Walsh.

Formal mediation with Judge Sandra Taylor will occur March 1 among the city, Pier B and Safer Cleaner Ships, possibly to negotiate changes to the 20+-year agreement that currently authorizes Pier B to welcome seven cruise ships a week while giving the city 25% of its ship revenues.

Pozzuoli also emphasized that the current agreement actually encourages Pier B to “use its best efforts to solicit and book cruise ships so as to maximize disembarkation fee revenue while emphasizing upper market cruise ship tourism.”

The ordinance that Pozzuoli’s team did draft outlines environmental regulations and penalties for cruise ships based on similar laws in other port cities.

Commissioners withdrew that ordinance Tuesday, saying they want it to come closer to the voterapproved limits, perhaps as a result of the March 1 mediation.

Commissioner Sam Kaufman has also repeatedly emphasized his desire for a water quality testing program that could perhaps be included in the ordinance.

Commissioner Jimmy Weekley also wants the March 1 mediation process to include the possibility of Pier B allowing public access to Admiral’s Cut. The slice of water separates Pier B and its adjacent Opal Key Resort from the city-owned Truman Waterfront. A long-desired bridge over Admiral’s Cut would allow unfettered pedestrian access from the city’s Mallory Square to Truman Waterfront Park.

The city commission — and the public — will hear an update from the mediation the evening of March 1 at the regularly scheduled commission meeting, City Attorney Shawn Smith said. He has also suggested that the city call a special meeting on March 10 to finalize the cruise ship measures.

He told the story of his arrival to a group of about 250 people at Saturday night’s Dinner on the Diamond at Rex Weech Field to celebrate Key West baseball.

“They wouldn’t put me (at age 15) on a team until I had a tryout,” Powell said. “They had me bat against George Mira, who was the best Key West pitcher at that time.

I hit a long home run. Then I hit another. I got on a team and later so did my brothers,” including Carl Taylor, who also would later play in the Major Leagues.

Earlier Saturday evening, John Wesley “Boog” Powell, 80 years young, and I, at 85, reminisced from 60 years earlier when I was covering baseball for the Rochester, New York Times-Union and he was playing his last minor league season for the Rochester Red Wings before moving up to the Baltimore Orioles.

“I remember when you wrote about Jimmy Finigan, and I kept waiting for you to call me for a story,” he recalled. “I almost won the Triple Crown that year (1961) but you never called.”

Remarkable. He could remember that slight, but I don’t. Well, Boog, I apologize. I’m sure your memory is correct.

For younger people: Boog led the Conchs to the state championship and went on to win the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1970 during a 17-year Major League career during which he hit 339 home runs.

KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL has a pair of preseason baseball games against Taravella at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19, at Rex Weech Field.

Coach Ralph Henriquez Jr. is very optimistic about his pitching staff, while the rest of the team is very young. “The state will be hearing about our pitchers,” he told the diners Saturday night.

Jacob Burnham, a sophomore lefthander, will be starting Friday night, while Saturday evening, it’ll be either Felix Long, a sophomore righthander, or Lucky Barroso, a 6-foot 5-inch junior righthander.

Marlin Takovich, a junior righthander, is set to be the closer, while the only senior pitcher, Billy Kight, a righthander, will be available to start mid-week games but is held up by tendonitis at present. Jack Haggard, a junior lefthander, has control of three pitches, Henriquez told me.

Taravella is led by a senior lefthander who is headed to the University of Miami, said the Key West coach.

Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26, University will open the Conchs’ regular season with 7:30 p.m. games.

In a scheduling oddity this season, the Conchs will play 25 home games and only two away — on March 28 at Columbus and March 31 at Coral Shores. The home schedule includes a six-team spring break tournament March 23-25.

Key West will be competing against Westminster Christian, John Carroll, North Fort Myers and two others in that tournament.

YES, I’VE BEEN WATCHING the Beijing Winter Olympics, but apparently many of you haven’t. Viewership apparently is down 50%. I enjoy the skating and the long jumping. I could do without the boarding.

SO THE LOS ANGELES RAMS beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 2320, in the Super Bowl. The Rams took their last and final lead with 1 minute, 25 seconds to go, which emulated the other playoff contests.

I thought it was a good game, even if the Bengals lost. It was close. I thought the Rams would win by 20 points, but if you took the four points and bet on the Bengals, you stood to win some money.

Los Angeles defensive tackle Aaron Donald was expected to be a dominant defensive force in the game, but he didn’t do much until the final play when he tackled Bengal quarterback Joe Burrow,

forcing him to just fling the ball for an incomplete pass on fourth down.

The Rams took over with less than a minute to go and quarterback Matthew Stafford ran out the clock.

So, that brought the end of what was probably the most exciting NFL postseason ever.

t the Feb. 16 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the overall theme was improvements, whether it was renovating Key West Airport’s Concourse A, introducing advanced technology into the library system or fixing traffic on the Stretch.

David Strickland, the director of county airports, gave an update about the renovations at Key West airport’s Concourse A. He announced that he has been able to slice $2.4 million off the budget by making design decisions that are easier on the wallet: a virtual reality experience will replace an aquarium as a design element; terrazzo floors are being switched with a more cost-effective type of flooring; and a “spider glass” curtain wall of windows will be a cheaper two-panel window instead.

Though the renovations of the concourse are still in the design phase, Strickland showed a video of what they will look like. After exiting their plane, passengers will walk through a virtual reality underwater “experience.” The star of the video caused some chuckles: a huge bar lining the wall of baggage claim.

“You would be surprised how many arriving passengers talk about that,” said Strickland, in response to the laughs. “If they’re new to Key West and have never been before, they want their drink.”

Library director Kimberly Matthews spoke about the new technology being introduced in the libraries as a result of a recent federal grant: $975,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act. Matthews said that new tech includes self-service machines for printing, laptops and charging sta-

tions, and a holds locker that will be available 24/7 outside of the libraries. She also announced 24/7 stand-alone-unit libraries that will contain 340 books and DVDs. “The purpose is to provide service in underserved areas, like Stock Island and in the Tavernier area,” explained Matthews.

She said staff is currently negotiating to lease a space next to the Tavernier Winn-Dixie. The unit will be available 24/7 and have an LCD screen in front. When Rice expressed concern about vandalism, Matthews replied that these units have scratch-proof exteriors and have been deployed across the country without any complaints of vandalism.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay unexpectedly introduced a light moment when discussing his item: a request to ask FDOT for fencing or foliage at mile marker 109 on the Stretch.

The reason? To prevent “lookey loos.”

Evidently, this part of the stretch is called Bikini Beach, and traffic screeches to a halt so drivers and passengers can get an eyeful of the swimmers hanging out on the sand. So a barrier of some sort would prevent the slowdown of traffic by obstructing the view.

“Although we are a scenic highway, that track is a little too scenic?” asked Mayor David Rice, with a chuckle.

“Yes, it appears to be too scenic, Mr. Mayor,” replied the sheriff.

He explained that during peak season traffic backs up two miles north and south on the Stretch and a lot of accidents happen as a result, causing police and fire-rescue services to be tied up.

The board resolved to give Ramsey permission to ask FDOT for a visual barrier at MM 109, whether it’s foliage or a fence.

Rice, assistant director of support services for Monroe County Public Library, will miss the way Tom Hambright delicately handled historical papers, such as the tattered love letters from a soldier. Michael Nelson, the library’s assistant director of public services, will miss his very presence — the way he came into the library every day during COVID, even during the closures, wearing a tie along with his mask.

“There will be a void in the Florida History Room without doubt,” Key West author and ghost hunter David Sloan said. “But Tom earned his retirement a thousand times over. Tom’s retirement marks the end of an era.”

The Board of County Commissioners agrees. Hambright will be retiring on Wednesdsay, Feb. 23 — his 84th birthday — after 36 years with the county as a historian. So in his honor, the board decreed that he is now Historian Emeritus in a ceremony at their Feb. 16 meeting.

Hambright spoke to Keys Weekly after the ceremony.

“It’s satisfying, but it’s going to be boring,” he confided with a laugh. “But I’m turning 84.”

He said his favorite part of the job was “when you find something new.” As an example, he excitedly talked about new documents that he discovered recently while researching the 200th anniversary of Key West. He was reading papers that described the events of March 25, 1822, when U.S. Navy Lt. Matthew Perry planted the American flag on island soil.

Hambright learned from a document that Key West founding father John W. C. Fleming attended this flag raising and sang a song.

“And we didn’t know this before,” he said, with a gleam in his eye.

The fact that he still digs through documents jives with his passion for history, according to Alex Vega. Vega

founded the Key West Firehouse Museum in 1991 and received a lot of help from Hambright with research. The two became friends.

“His passion for history rubs off on you,” Vega said. “He used to go on vacation and go to the National Archives in D.C., just researching things about Key West. Who has that time to do that? But I found myself on a few similar trips, all because of him.”

“Tom's legacy is so huge it's hard to capture, but I'd say it's one of tirelessly preserving and incredibly generous sharing the history of the Keys in so many different ways,” said Nancy Klingener, reporter for WLRN and a former coworker of his at the library.

She complimented his archiving of local history.

“The newsletters of the Key West Maritime Historical Society are our local historical journal,” she continued. “And more recently the publicly accessible image archive on Flickr has brought the history of the Keys to the world — way more people than could ever make it to the little library on Fleming Street.”

And Sloan credits Hambright with changing his life.

“When I moved to Key West in 1996 to start the original ghost tour, no one was talking about ghosts,” Sloan said. “No books in the library, no one telling stories on the streets. I packed up my car and was ready to leave town when something told me to go back to the Florida History Room. Tom Hambright was there. I told him I was looking for a book on ghosts, and without looking up, he said, ‘There are none.’

As I turned to leave, he looked up and said, ‘No ghost books, but we have plenty of ghosts.’ Tom disappeared into the vault and returned with a folder full of newspaper clippings related to Key West’s haunted history. That moment changed the course of my life. I can’t imagine where I might have ended up were it not for Tom.”

he Key West Art Center will present the 57th annual Old Island Days Art Festival at Truman Waterfront Park on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year’s show brings back some longtime favorite artists and introduces many new participants.

The waterfront setting has given the festival opportunity to set up more booths and artists responded, with more 110 of them scheduled to attend.

Last year, COVID’s social distancing rule required the show to move to Truman Waterfront. While it was expected to return to Whitehead Street this year, road work in the neighborhood prevents that.

Artists and crafters will line the quay showing watercolors, oil/

acrylic, mixed media, photography and more works for the home, office or outdoors. In addition, visitors will find jewelry, clothing, sculpture, glass and wood, along with plenty of fun, funky tropical arts and crafts.

This group of artists has something for every taste and budget.

There is plenty of parking and bike racks and the show is steps away from the Duval Loop stop.

The Old Island Days Art Festival is sponsored by the Key West Art Center, 301 Front St. The non-profit Community Art Center is Key West’s oldest gallery and features original works of art by over 50 local artists.

T

he Key West Rip-Off Rapid Response Team celebrated the second anniversary of closing the last unlicensed cosmetic shop in Key West with a victory party on Feb. 15 at Willie T’s on Duval Street.

The local consumer advocate group waged a five-year battle against the cosmetic shops known for deceptive sales practices, multiple code violations and aggressive sidewalk soliciting. The group helped victims recover money, lobbied for stricter code enforcement and staged sidewalk protests against the shops, which at one point numbered 14 separate businesses on Duval and Front streets.

The group is asking local landlords not to rent to this kind of business again.

Spokesperson Tevis Wernicoff said, “It would be a bad mistake to rent to one of these unlicensed cosmetics shops. Our team will resume picketing the first day one opens and our group will not let these businesses return to Key West. They reflect very badly on any community that allows them.”

Local personality Laurie Thibaud will emcee the Headdress Ball on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater.

he Key West Headdress Ball, Mardi Gras edition, is happening — finally — after three postponements due to COVID-19.

The colorful and creative event is the Key West Business Guild’s major fundraiser and all net proceeds go to promoting Key West worldwide as a premier LGBT+ destination.

The Headdress Ball is typically part of the annual Fantasy Fest celebration, but this will be the first time it’s a standalone event. (The ball will return to the Fantasy Fest lineup next fall.) The event takes place outside at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater with distanced seating at the tables.

The program consists of the judging of Headdress Ball creations and performances by some of Key West’s best talent. The panel of judges includes JT Thompson, founder of Key West’s One Human Family initiative; Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg; and Key West City Manager Patti McLauchlin. First place wins $3,000 (judged from the shoulders up); second place wins $1,000 and third place wins $500.

Mayor Teri Johnston will open this year’s program, which features performances by Christopher Peterson, The Aquanettes, Aqua’s Diva Inga, the Nick Mazza Dancers, Bourbon Street Pub performer Bria Ansara and Luke Fox. The crew from Waterfront Playhouse will present a sneak preview of their 83rd season next fall. WEOW/92.7’s

Rudegirl provides the music. The emcee is comedienne and WGAY radio personality Laurie Thibaud of Aqua Idol fame.

ey West Easy,’ an exhibit of recent work by Peter Lewis Vey, is on view through March 3 at the Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St. For Vey, “Key West Style” represents a body of work of the varying cultural influences of the island chain.

“Beauty is exciting,” Vey said.

For a quarter-century, he has painted the easy elegance of the Florida Keys, from secret back-country nooks to the proud Victorian architecture and other styles of historic buildings in Key West. Works such as “Happy Friday” and “The Big Picture” are nuanced studies of Old Town jewels.

“Key West Easy” has a sense of great comfort. It doesn’t take itself too seriously — like Vey, who arrived on the Key West art scene in 1996 and quickly established himself as an artist.

Vey’s Ballast Key series is a prime example of the many times he has visited over the decades.

“Florida Straits” and “Hermit Crab Rodeo” are two in this series marrying the water and shoreline.

His work has been chosen for the cover of many magazines, including an upcoming BoatUS, the Netflix series “Bloodline” and now a movie, “Heart of a Lion,” as well as in the now-closed Newseum in Washington, D.C. After studying art and art history at Duke University, Vey spent several years during the 1980s working in an abstract expressionist approach, a style he still works in to loosen up. The spontaneity that makes his realist work so fresh comes from this font.

Vey uses only one tool, an artist’s palette knife, but coaxes it to yield both the finest of lines and flat expanses of pure hue. He begins by making a loose sketch, to nail down the composition, and then builds up a picture area by area, painting with oil on linen, which requires him to work quickly.

Whether landscape or cityscape catches Vey’s eye, he brings a delicate balance of understatement, and easy elegance to the work.

t the most recent County Commission meeting, officials signed a resolution supporting Sheriff Rick Ramsay’s request to install a “visual barrier” at MM106 on the 18-Mile Stretch.

The request to block shimmering blue waters from the view of anyone entering or leaving the Keys is in the best interest of public safety and aims to reduce traffic congestion from rubbernecking sightseers at the place known as “Bikini Beach.”

A

socially distanced dark comedy about the pandemic, nostalgically set during the early days when we were all microwaving our mail and thinking about killing our spouses, is playing now in Key West.

God knows there hasn’t been much to laugh about the last couple of years.

Pandemics tend to lean that way. But thanks to Hy Conrad, the writer/producer of the “Monk” comedy series, Key West gets a chance to shake off a little of the downside with his new play, “Quarantine For Two,” which opened a four-week run on Feb. 15 at Key West’s Red Barn Theatre. The production marks the play’s American premiere.

“Hy and I were chatting one day and we thought a funny play about this might be good for people, to lighten things up a bit. And who better to do that than Hy Conrad?” said artistic director Joy Hawkins.

The play centers on a middleaged suburban couple, played by David Black and Mimi McDonald.

Their year of quarantining at home hasn’t gone well. They’ve driven each other crazy, and each has come to the conclusion that for their own sanity, they need to kill the other. Their attempts to do just that – with the involvement of a somewhat dim and double-dealing pool boy-turned-hitman played by Rhett Kalman – leads to a hilarious escalation of complications.

“I tend to write toward comedy and crime,” Conrad said. “The idea of two people in lockdown who desperately want to kill each other seemed to make comic sense. The challenge was balancing the truth in the COVID situation with finding the humanity in the characters and making it funny.”

“The last two years have been so surreal and ludicrous and crazy,” Hawkins said. “So let’s just jump in and laugh at the predicament we’ve all been in. Because somewhere in all of this, we really do need to find a laugh.”

he Key West Preschool Coop on Flagler Avenue will host its 32nd annual Spring Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at 2610 Flagler Ave. The fair will include its usual assortment of vendors, giant slides, an obstacle course and other attractions for kids, live music and food. But for the first time ever, the fair also will include a celebrity dunk tank.

Are you upset with high taxes?

Dunk Tax Collector Sam Steele (not that he determines any of the tax rates — he just collects them). Did you get a speeding ticket on U.S. 1? Try to dunk Sheriff Rick Ramsay. Did you get pulled over in Key West? Try to dunk Chief Sean Bran-

denburg. (Yes, the chief still pulls people over — trust me on this one.) Other local celebrities who have volunteered for a stint in the dunk tank include Conch baseball coach Ralph Henriquez and radio personality Rude Girl.

The dunk tank is for a good cause, all in the name of fun and the folks who have volunteered to take a dip for the Spring Fair all have a great sense of humor.

The Spring Fair has been a Key West fixture almost as long as the Key West Preschool Co-op, which was started by area parents in 1988. It’s a non-profit school, where families and teachers work together to help children learn and discover.

he Key West weather was unusually chilly for Samuel’s House Polar Plunge on Feb. 13 at Higgs Beach. Normally a tongue-in-cheek fundraiser for the nonprofit that helps the Florida Keys’ most vulnerable populations, the day’s 64-degree weather made the ocean plunge much colder than usual. t was a musical celebration of a life well lived. Key West bid a fond farewell to the late musician Lofton “Coffee” Butler with a celebration of life on Feb. 11 at the native musician’s namesake Coffee Butler Amphitheater. The next day included a funeral procession and graveside service at the Key West Cemetery.

The Key West Junkanoos performed at both events, while the cemetery funeral procession included all manner of local musicians.

Butler died on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at the age of 93.

He got his lasting nickname when a friend mispronounced “Loffy” (short for Lofton) as Coffee and the name stuck. Later, when Butler was playing regular gigs at the former Hukilau Polynesian restaurant on North Roosevelt Boulevard, the owners decided that story had to be embellished. From then on, Coffee’s nickname was given to him because “he was so stimulating,” Ralph DePalma writes in his book “Soul of Key West” that details Key West’s music scene and the musicians who make it what it is.

“I’d been trying to prepare myself for the day this news came, but there’s no way to do it,” DePalma told the Keys Weekly on Feb. 2 after learning the night before that Butler had died around 9:30 p.m. in Miami, where he had been living with his son and grandchildren for the last month or so. “There are no words to describe the deep sadness felt today all over Key West. Our legend has passed.”

De Palma and others offered eulogies at the amphitheater ceremony, where City Commissioner Clayton Lopez and a host of local musicians played tributes.

angroves. Seagrass.

Sponges. Coral. And don’t even get us started on the fish, turtles, dolphins, lobster and other underwater animals.

They’re all vital marine resources and they’re all right offshore in our shared backyard.

But they’re not always accessible. In fact, a surprising number of Florida Keys kids have never spent a day snorkeling in shallow water, swimming at a sandbar or exploring an offshore island.

While plenty of us grab a bucket of chicken and our pre-packed “boat bag” of sunscreen and snorkel gear, we tend to take for granted our access to and experiences on the water.

This year’s class of Leadership Monroe County, Class XXIX, of which I happen to be a proud member, wants to change that and ensure all middle-schoolers in the Florida Keys experience their saltwater surroundings at least once, while learning why their protection is essential.

Class XXIX, a collection of 15 professionals from the Lower, Middle and Upper Keys, named ourselves Delta Force due to our formation during the pandemic’s delta variant surge and our commitment to creating positive change in our community.

Leadership Monroe County aims to develop strong, dedicated, local leaders working for a sense of community throughout Monroe County. The nine-month program introduces participants to all facets of the Florida Keys’ government, environment, law enforcement, health care, education, media and other topics. The program also requires each class to complete a project that benefits the entire island chain.

Our class spent a November day on the water with MarineLab in Key Largo, then visited the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s drinking water plant in Florida

City before heading to the Everglades for two nights.

While on the boat at MarineLab, getting an up-close look at all sorts of plants and animals, we realized how many Keys kids never get the chance to leave the shore and experience what’s beyond the beach.

We wanted to show all kids what’s in and under the water, with the hope of inspiring the next generation of environmental protectors. So we came up with “Saltwater Superheroes: Because all kids are seaworthy.”

Delta Force has partnered with MarineLab in the Upper Keys to provide an educational boat trip, for all Keys middle-schoolers.

We’re raising money to ensure that every Keys kid sees and experiences our shared backyard from the deck of a boat. It’s a world they have to see to believe.

And they won’t protect what they don’t understand. MarineLab also provides a matching grant program that doubles each dollar we raise.

Every dollar is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. We’ve also created sponsorship levels that start with a First Mate sponsorship of $50 for one child. emember conference calls?

Audio-only, actual phone calls that connected multiple users?

(Wistful sigh) I miss those.

But I get it. And I applaud the recent, world-changing advancements in telecommunications since the start of the COVID pandemic around March 2020. I’d also venture to guess that the proliferation of video conferencing, given its impact on workplace flexibility and online learning, is among the most significant and lasting products of the pandemic.

Sure, we’d had FaceTime and Skype for a while, but not as part of our daily routines. Those were reserved for special occasions, calls with grandparents and other, shall we say, visually important communications.

But now we have a multitude of commonly used platforms. I’ll call them, collectively, Zoogleams (Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams). The bigwigs built a better mousetrap — several, in fact. And separately, of course. Competitively.

Our digital calendars and email inboxes are filled with invites and links to meetings. Every kid in the country, for more than a year, used a classroom version for online learning.

They’ve pushed regular, audio phone calls further into the recesses of our least-used phone apps. In fact, our columnist Mark Hedden recently apologized for calling me on the phone instead of texting or emailing, as he usually does. “Sorry to make you answer — and talk on — an actual phone call,” Hedden said. “I know how intrusive that feels these days.”

So strange, but true, we agreed.

It’s bizarre. We carry our phones everywhere, can’t live without them.

But we so rarely use them as an actual telephone.

I even got one of the fancy new Samsung Flip phones, mainly because I was tired of accidentally answering a call I normally would have ignored while pulling the phone from my purse.

I get the attractions of video calls for business owners and bosses. They require professionalism and accountability. Plus, they’re scheduled in advance. They sort of have to be. You can’t — or shouldn’t — join a Zoom call while still getting dressed, applying makeup, feeding the cat or doing something unrelated to the topic. Well, you can, but you have to turn off your camera, which immediately makes everyone leap to conclusions about what you’re doing off camera. Insert your own CNN joke here.

Video calls, conferences, presentations and meetings, once relegated to the space-age, cartoon world of the Jetsons, with their video phones and jet packs, are now as much a part of our lives as text messaging.

While I can’t dispute their benefits, I can lament the passing of the more comfortably anonymous audio calls in which appearance was not a factor. (Not that I was ever doing anything untoward, or in a place I wasn’t supposed to be, boss.)

Think about your typical Zoogleams experience. Where do you find yourself looking the most?

At yourself, of course. Just as we instantly look at ourselves in any still photo (and deem any shot in which we look good a “great photo”), we also spend most of a video call evaluating our own hair, makeup, facial expressions and posture. It’s true, admit it.

And now that we’ve mastered the Jetsons-style video calls, can we please make their jet packs our next priority?

ADVENTURES WITH IMPROPERLY COLORED BIRDS

hen I first pulled up I thought I was seeing a half-dozen young roseate spoonbills. This was on the side road that parallels the runway at Marathon airport, and it would have been kind of ironic, because I’d just spent a couple days up in the Everglades, where spoonbills are supposed to be this time of year, and I didn’t manage to see any. After a moment, though, I realized I wasn’t seeing pink but orange, a forgivable confusion, as they are both colors that can be found in a bowl of Fruit Loops, and the hues and intensities are pretty similar.

The birds were on the runway side of the fence and their orange was not as intense as, say, an orange-grove orange, but something closer to an apricot or a peach, or a hybrid of the two. (Apparently there is a stone fruit called a peachcot, which is a hybrid of a peach and an apricot, but whose color is a little too yellow to describe the birds.)

Besides their color, the six birds were shaped differently than spoonbills, which look like weirdly glamorous flying dinosaurs. Cattle egrets may be the least elegant wading bird on the planet. On their best days they look kind of scrappy, but most of the time they look like they’re punching the clock at a 40-hour-a-week middle-management gig in the wading bird union, which was the only position they could find after graduating bird college. Also, cattle egrets are about two-thirds the size of roseate spoonbills. And their bills don’t look like spoons so much as square-cut masonry nails.

As a general rule, cattle egrets are white. In breeding season they can develop brown patches on the breast and back, as well as the back of the head and neck. (They’re one of the few species that go earth-toned to attract a mate.) But I’d never seen full body coloration like that before.

What immediately came to mind was a series of photos from a few years ago of a “curry gull” in England that looked very similar. The “curry gull,” it turned out, was not a species previously unknown to science, but a regular old herring gull that had somehow gotten into a bag of curry powder or turmeric – nobody is sure which and apparently no one tasted the bird to see – and dyed itself a similar shade of orange.

I wondered if it was possible for six cattle egrets to somehow fall into a bag of curry powder, or possibly turmeric, but it seemed unlikely, as there are not many Indian restaurants in the Keys. (Though if you haven’t tried the recently opened Tikka Bar on Greene Street, you should. It’s really good.) Also, birds’ feathers require a lot of maintenance and preening in order to stay functional, and you could see in the photos of the curry gull that its feathers were all gunked up. So much so that it had to be captured and cleaned by the local wildlife rescue people.

Researchers trying to understand bird behavior will sometimes catch and dye their subjects, but they tend to choose unnatural looking colors – I saw a pink Peregrine falcon once – and birds that were being studied that way would also, most likely, have metal or plastic bands on their legs.

My field guide pointed out that some cattle egrets do on occasion show more extensive brown patches in breeding season, but the illustrations showed them covering about a third of their body, not all of it.

When I got home and did further reading, I saw some references to orange or peach-colored birds being seen in twos or threes on rare occasions in South Florida. Also, records of aberrant plumage birds in India. (Cattle egrets were originally from Asia and Africa, but have been spreading themselves around the globe in recent centuries. They first appeared in the U.S. in 1953 and have extended their range all the way to California and Canada since.)

David Sibley, author of the “Sibley Guide to Birds,” has a blog where he muses somewhat informally about things ornithological. He wrote two blog entries about peachy-orange cattle egrets in 2012 after readers sent him photos of birds similar to the ones I saw.

Sibley pointed out that while most birds get their breeding plumage by molting dull feathers and replacing them with more brightly pigmented ones, cattle egrets do it differently (as do some parrots, some other herons, as well as birds in the tinamou and bustard families). Their dark feathers come from something called cosmetic coloration.

Cattle egrets have special down feathers that disintegrate at the exposed ends into a dark, slightly oily talcum-like substance known as powder-down. Unlike most feathers, powder-down feathers grow continually, kind of like human hair. The birds spread this through their other feathers as breeding season approaches, and this tints the feathers into their more eye-catching hues.

Sibley speculated that the full-body coloration may be the result of the bird over-producing the oils in its powder-down, and the color therefore spreading. Seeing six similarly aberrant birds at the same time makes me speculate that excessively oily powder-down may be a genetic trait, since how else could you explain such a cluster of oddly colored birds? But that’s speculating upon someone else’s speculation, which feels like some pretty shaky ground.

It might be the kind of thing there’s never a clear answer to.

Unless someone opened an Indian restaurant in the Middle Keys I don’t know about.

ADDERLEY TOWN Family legacy lives on Key Vaca

he oldest house in the Florida Keys, outside of Key West, takes a bit of effort to find. It is in the woods of Marathon, on Key Vaca, at Crane Point Hammock.

The house was built by George Adderley, who, circa 1890, at 20 years of age, left his life in the Bahamas behind and moved to the Florida Keys. Before building his house on Key Vaca, he lived on what has been described as Matecumbe Key, which probably indicates Upper Matecumbe Key, where the small farming community of Matecumbe was developing. He married his wife, Olivia, in 1896.

In 1902, he and his wife moved to Key Vaca, settling in a virgin sub-tropical hammock on the gulf side of the island where, the following year, he purchased 32.25 acres for $100. Adderley would clear land and begin to build his house, a rectangular masonry vernacular structure with a hip roof covered in pressed tin. A homemade form of concrete called tabby held the masonry together. The mixture was created by burning shells, in this case, conch shells, to extract lime. The lime was then mixed with water, sand, ash and crushed shells until the sticky “concrete” paste was formed. The house, built circa 1906, resembled a typical rural Bahamian home.

Around George and Olivia and their adopted daughter, Louisa Smith, the small black community of Adderley Town grew. Five homes were built in the area, though Adderley’s is the only surviving structure. The community worked as fishermen, spongers and charcoal makers.

When making charcoal, buttonwood was the preferred tree. The late Florida historian Charleon Tebeau described the process:

“Great cone-shaped heaps of neatly stacked wood were built up, sometimes containing as much as ten cords for a single burning.

This was then covered with grass and sand to make it airtight except for a vent at the top.

Enough openings were made around the bottom to fire the wood and burn it so as to drive out the volatile gasses and leave charcoal. A cord of wood produced ten bags of charcoal for which there was a ready market.”

By the time Adderley had built his home, the Key West Extension of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railway was making tracks for Key West.

Although the train would not reach Key West until 1912, by 1908, daily rail service had been established between Miami and the temporary terminus at Knights Key, three miles away at what is today considered the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge. The right-of-way ran through Adderley’s property and, in exchange for him selling the land required for the rightof-way, the F.E.C. agreed to create a stop at Adderley Town.

The only railroad depot located on Key Vaca was the Marathon Station, once found in the vicinity of what is 33rd Street today. At Adderley Town, the railroad built a platform and created a flag stop. Once a week, as the train was roaring across Key Vaca, if the engineer saw the flag raised at the Adderley Town platform, he would stop.

Among the residents of Adderley Town, according to the 1910 U.S. Census, were the Adderley family, and Joseph and Margret Curry and their adopted son Joseph Butler.

Joseph Rigby lived on nearby Old Rachel Key with the community’s lone non-Bahamian family, David and Janet Freeman, from South Carolina. Three men were identified living in a

schooner anchored off Old Rachel Key. George and Olivia Adderley would sell their property to Francis and Mary Crane in 1949. Olivia died the following year, and her body was laid to rest at the Key West Cemetery. George would BRAD be living in Key West, at a BERTELLI home for the blind, when he passed in 1958. Keys history and The Adderley House is part the Skunk Ape. of the Florida Black History Trail, developed in partnership with the Florida Division of Historical Resources and a group of invested citizens. The subsequent pamphlet they produced provides a microcosm of African American landmarks and legacies.

Among the points of interest presented in the guide is the Adderley House, found at its original location at Crane Point Hammock at 5550 Overseas Highway. In 1992, George’s tabby house of vernacular construction became listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is the only house like it still standing in the Florida Keys. When visiting the site, it is possible to step inside and experience the home and an incredible piece of Florida Keys history on a personal level.

onroe County Commissioners, senior staff, officials from Florida Keys municipalities, and local business owners were in the state capital last week for the annual Florida Keys Day. In addition to meeting with legislators, Monroe County also met with the governor's office, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez , Rep. Jim Mooney, Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Citizens Insurance, among others.

WATER WAR ENSUES Opponents say Senate bill a threat to Everglades progress

petition has more than 37,400 signatures from opponents to a Senate bill that, they say, poses a threat to more clean water flowing south to the Everglades.

The full Senate will now consider the proposal, which faces opposition from Gov. Ron DeSantis, environmental organizations and local Keys fishing guides.

Senate Bill 2508, which surfaced from the Senate Appropriations Committee on Feb. 4, addresses funding decisions related to environmental resources in the Senate’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Before the release of state funds, the proposed bill requires the South Florida Water Management District to certify recommendations to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that do not “diminish the quantity of water available to existing legal users.” In addition, the bill authorizes use of state funds, originally set aside for the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir, also be used for the Lake Okeechobee Watershed — namely the C-43 West Basin Reservoir Storage project and the Indian River Lagoon-South project.

On Feb. 9, the bill moved out of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee via a 16-4 vote.

The bill goes before Senators for second reading on Thursday, Feb. 17.

The earlier subcommittee meeting was the first chance the public had to voice comments on Senate Bill 2508. Many Keys fishing guides, including Matt Bellinger, ventured to Tallahassee to relay their concerns. A backcountry captain of 32 years, Bellinger told legislators how he saw the loss of 70,000 acres of seagrass inside Everglades National Park due to salinity issues in a two-day period.

“It was a season of drought, but we had no water coming in. It was the same time water was being sent east and west to Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie canals, destroying their environment.

If that was going to a reservoir, which is under construction, these things would have never happened,” he said.

The legislation highlights an ongoing battle over Lake Okeechobee’s water supply in various parts of Florida. City of West Palm Beach officials are backing the Senate proposal, which they say prioritizes water for nearly 130,000 residents,

customers and visitors. Organizations like The Everglades Foundation and Captains for Clean Water, as well as Keys fishing guides, say the bill would reverse years of progress in Everglades restoration.

According to the Everglades Foundation, the bill jeopardizes construction of the EAA Reservoir, which would send clean water south while reducing damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the east and west coasts. Also at risk is a balanced approach to water management reached through the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), which considers future Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan infrastructure that provides additional flexibility for lake operation.

“The EAA reservoir is the crown jewel of Everglades restoration,” states the Everglades Foundation. “We cannot allow it to be jeopardized. There’s too much at stake. The Everglades Foundation will continue to fight to construct the EAA reservoir and reduce harmful discharges from Lake Okeechobee.”

As of Feb. 16, a total of 37,429 signatures were secured for a petition posted by Captains for Clean Water opposing Senate Bill 2508. The nonprofit organization, which fights to restore and preserve water resources, said the bill is bad policy with major consequences for Florida’s environment and economy.

“This bill contains substantive pieces of policy legislation that were not heard in the legislative committee process and are being fast-tracked with virtually no accountability or transparency,” the organization said. “Among several harmful provisions, this bill would result in more harmful discharges that fuel toxic algae blooms, give preferential treatment to the water supply needs of the sugar industry, and threaten two critical components to solving south Florida’s water crisis: the EAA Reservoir and the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM).”

State Sen. Ben Albritton, bill sponsor, said during the subcommittee meeting on Feb. 9 that those who spoke out against the bill were being misled. Albritton said the bill protects the EAA Reservoir. In addition, he acknowledged that the SFWMD’s budget is funded primarily by the state.

“Are you really telling me that

because the state of Florida gives them 70% of their money, it’s unfair to ask for some more accountability from them?” he said.

DeSantis said rather than advancing legislation to effect a major policy change, Senate Bill 2508 is being rammed through the budget process, short-circuiting public engagement and leaving affected agencies in the dark.

A budget proposal by the governor contained $960 million for Everglades restoration, which brings the four-year investment to more than $3 billion.

“I have been a champion for Everglades restoration and oppose any measure that derails progress on reducing harmful discharges and sending more water to the Everglades,” DeSantis said in a statement. “Moreover, I reject any attempt to deprioritize the EAA Reservoir project south of Lake Okeechobee.”

Senate Appropriations chair Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, disagreed with DeSantis.

“I do not think we’re ramming anything through the budget process,” she said.

Capt. Steve Friedman, commodore of the Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association, said he’s seen what mismanagement and lack of funding can do to the bays and estuaries. He and many other local guides traveled to the state capital having learned about the bill just before the subcommittee meeting.

“You can see many of us rallied to let you know the importance of how we feel this will jeopardize not only our lives, but many lives of South Florida, including hotels, restaurants and many businesses,” he said.

“I think what we need to do is look at it a little bit more closely and understand this is political strategy,” he continued.

“And we’re seeing through this strategy. Last-minute filings like this that try to undermine what we've been working on for years, spending hundreds of hours coming up here fighting for clean water in Florida, and fighting for our livelihoods.”

State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez told the Keys Weekly that she’s expressed her concerns to Senate leadership and was told a solution is in the works.

“I don’t have any further details at the moment but was told the bill would improve significantly,” she said.

eys Weekly heard from Monroe County School District staff that Tinashay Cunningham, a 14-year-old 8th grader at Marathon High School, is an exceptional student. Intrigued, we asked her for an interview, and she was excited. But scheduling the conversation was another matter. Due to all her school activities, she’s busier than the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Meanwhile, we spoke to Christina Rodriguez, the assistant principal of Marathon High School, about Tinashay.

“I’ve had the pleasure of being Tinashay’s assistant principal since she was in first grade at Switlik Elementary,” she wrote to us in an email. “Since then, Tinashay has been a strong female leader. In fifth grade, she became the president of student council and served as a leader for her peers. Tinashay has always excelled in academics and in sports. She has earned all A’s since first grade, has won multiple reading awards and has motivated her peers to follow her path to success. She’s a driven young lady with a strong determination to succeed and one day attend Harvard University.”

Tinashay’s mother, Georgina, agreed that Tinashay is a determined young woman. “She’s very dedicated and hardworking,” she told Keys Weekly.

“And disciplined and very friendly. She likes to make sure things are going perfect and to do things ahead, like homework and preparing for a family trip,” she said with a laugh. “And we taught her to be nice even when others aren’t.”

Here are Tinashay’s answers to Keys Weekly’s questions: You’re very busy. What’s a typical day like?

I get up at 5:45 or 6 a.m., then I go to school at 7:30 a.m. After school, on Tuesdays I have Champions for Change, a group where we talk about drug prevention and spreading the word about that. Mondays and Wednesdays, I have cheer in Key West, and Thursdays I have dance. And I have track every day.

What did you think about Netflix’s “Cheer”?

I liked it. I liked Gabi Butler. It was fun to watch the cool flips and tricks.

What courses do you take? I take all advanced classes. I’m in algebra honors. I’m in 8th grade, and that’s a high school class. And also advanced science. I’m also in high school band — I play the flute. I’m also president of SGA — the Student Government Association.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A cardiologist. It seems cool to learn about hearts. And “Grey’s Anatomy” is my favorite.

And I love (surgeon) Cristina Yang — she’s my favorite character.

Whom do you credit for your success? God and my family.

What would you say to other children of color who are having problems and/or unmotivated in school? Reach out to teachers and counselors, because they can provide them with additional contacts and support they need.

What can white people do to support people of color? They can have an open mind when people of color speak about injustices they face and use that education to advocate for equal opportunity.

If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be? For everyone to watch “Grey’s Anatomy.” But also, if everyone can be nice to each other and show respect.

What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Teleportation. So if you want to travel somewhere, you can just get there.

Because going to cheer competitions in Orlando, the drives are so long. You can just teleport there. I just want to get there fast.

What makes you laugh? Anything. I laugh at anything (said while laughing).

The hardest part about being a kid is… Having to follow rules? I don’t know. I like being a kid.

Anything else you’d like to tell the readers?

Read a book by (young adult fiction writer) Colleen Hoover. Her books are nice to read, and I think the ones that are the best give different aspects of topics and situations. I think reading helps you and is fun.
