‘WE MISS HIM AND WANT HIM BACK’ New Jersey family asks Keys for help with search for missing man

CHARLOTTE TWINE

charlotte@keysweekly.com

L

inda Hrevnack of Union, New Jersey, first learned her brother, Theodore “Ted” or “Teddy” Hrevnack, was missing on Dec. 31, 2021, when she received a call from Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Ted’s 2017 white Ford Explorer had been parked at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier since Dec. 29, and the police were investigating where its owner was. “The police contacted me on Dec. 31,” she told Keys Weekly. “I’m on his driver’s license as an emergency contact. They asked me if I could reach out to him. They wanted to know if I knew where he was. I was shocked.” Thus began a nightmare for Linda and her family, including her sister and her mother. “My mother is 90. She just lost my father,” Linda said. “We don’t know if Ted is dead, alive, ran away, got killed. … I don’t know what to say. We're under such distress. I don’t know what else to do.” The next step for the Hrevnack family was to sign a missing-person report that local New Jersey police brought to them. The family was told by MCSO that local camera footage had been investigated, and Ted was last seen walking down Dove Lake Drive near Harry Harris Park at noon on Dec. 29. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, and carrying a white bag. “He is an avid walker in that park,” said Linda. “He enjoys fishing, bird watching, walking and scavenging. He tells us all the time that he picks up litter. He gets upset when people throw litter. Maybe the white bag was for that purpose?” Though Ted grew up in New Jersey, he has lived in Tavernier for over 30 years. He is 68 years old and a retired landscaper. Ted has some health conditions including Dupuytren’s contracture, which makes many of his fingers curl up with one finger permanently pointing straight. Linda said he calls the family often, and that during their last conversation on Dec. 27, “he seemed out of sorts. But I don’t think he was in a state of mind to take his life.”

Ted’s friend, Mariela Care, agreed that he was in a good state of mind. He is a close friend of her and her husband, and he often takes care of their dogs. She describes him as a very caring person who can’t resist a joke. “He was always asking, ‘Do you need anything? How can I help?’” Care said. She last spoke with him on Dec. 28, when he said he was going to help a neighbor put palms in the garbage. He had left Care a Christmas card. “He seemed normal,” she said. “I really don’t know what happened to him unless he found the wrong people. He was a frail older man. I can’t see him picking a fight with anyone.” Linda said the police conducted a search of Harry Harris Park and could not find Ted. She asks readers to call her at 908-265-8764 and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s non-emergency number at 305-289-2371 if they know anything about her brother’s disappearance or have seen anything suspicious — even if he’s popped up in any photos taken on that day.

DARREN HORAN ENTERS SCHOOL BOARD RACE ...

K

ey West attorney Darren Michael Horan is running for the Monroe County School Board District 1 seat, according to Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin. Incumbent District 1 board member Bobby Highsmith, also an attorney, has said he will not seek reelection, which prompted Horan to run. Horan is thus far unopposed. Darren Horan is running for the “I would never have Monroe County School Board thrown my name in if District 1 seat currently held by Bobby was going to run Bobby Highsmith, who will not again, and if he decides seek reelection. CONTRIBUTED at the 11th hour to seek reelection, I’ll drop out. I respect him that much,” Horan, 42, told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 12. When asked why he’s running, Horan said, “It’s just the right time. My kids and my friends’ kids are all affected by what happens in the schools today.” Horan has a 9-year-old daughter at Poinciana Elementary, a 4-year-old daughter in pre-kindergarten at The Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea and a 20-yearold daughter who graduated from Key West High School in 2020. “My oldest graduated Key West High at the crux of COVID in 2020 and I’ve followed the psychological, emotional and academic toll it’s taking on our kids,” he said. Horan is a partner in the Key West law firm of Horan Law LLC and the youngest son of David Paul Horan, managing partner in the firm. His practice includes landlord/ tenant law, land use, criminal law and business law. He grew up in Key West and is also a partner with Bill Lay in three Key West restaurants and a catering company. His community involvement includes the Key West Military Affairs Committee, the Key West Chamber of Commerce board of directors and Take Stock in Children as a mentor. His wife, Jessica, is his campaign treasurer. Elsewhere in the school district, District 4 incumbent John Dick has filed for reelection in the Middle Keys and is thus far unopposed. District 5 incumbent Sue Woltanski is running for reelection against challenger Alexandria Suarez.

A

second candidate will seek the Monroe County School Board District 1 seat in the Nov. 8 election, per Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin: Key West mom and bookkeeper Gabrielle Brown. Key West attorney Darren Michael Horan has also announced his candidacy. The current sitting District 1 board member, Bobby Highsmith, told Keys Weekly he will not seek reelection. “Basically, eight years is plenty,” Highsmith said. “I’d like to see others step up with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. It’s been a great honor. I’ve enjoyed my service very much. I’m extremely proud of our school district and the great work that’s being done. I sincerely appreciate the voters and campaign supporters who allowed me to hold office for the past two terms. I wish my successor, whomever that might be, the best of luck in moving the district forward positively and successfully.” Brown is a 50-year-old Florida Keys native, widow, mother, grandmother and foster mother. She told Keys Weekly that she loves her community and is very active in her church. As a daughter of a former county commissioner, she spent much of her childhood in the ’70s and ’80s on the campaign trail with her father. She has been a bookkeeper, mostly in the construction industry, for 20-plus years. “I am excited about this opportunity to serve,” she said. “I was born and raised in Key West and am very proud to be a Conch. I believe it is my duty

as an American citizen to be involved in my community, and the education and not indoctrination of our children should be a priority. ” Brown has two adult children, both of whom attended Monroe County schools. In addition, she currently has a 7-month-old foster child. “I am dedicated, and passionate about my community and the well-being of children and their future,” she said. “The school board’s mission statement speaks about being global citizens. I believe that our children should be encouraged to be involved locally and to love their community and their country.” When asked how she thought the current school board is doing, she said, “I support the decision of the school board to allow face masks to be voluntary and not mandatory.”

T

wo top-tier positions within Islamorada village government seek qualified candidates. A job posted on Feb. 7 for the Islamorada Village Clerk shows an annual salary of $80,000. As the official record keeper, the village clerk provides the council with information and background material on matters that need a vote during meetings. The clerk also serves as the village’s election coordinator and works directly with the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections. This year, all five seats on the dais are up for election. In December, Kelly Toth announced her retirement following her many years serving the public. She started as human resource clerk in 2004 before leaving town and returning to Islamorada as an employee within the finance department in 2009. Toth eventually transitioned to village clerk and served her last day on Dec. 21. Deputy Clerk Stephanie Conde is serving as acting village clerk. A search for a new village clerk began last November. Human Resources Manager Evie Engelmeyer said the village manager is the only one with hiring authority. With a busy end to 2021 and thenmanager Greg Oravec’s departure, Engelmeyer said the village opted to renew the effort and advertise the village clerk position again under Acting Village Manager and Finance Director Maria Bassett. “Time to fill positions at the village varies, and filling any position has become more challenging as cost of living in the Keys continues to rise,” Engelmeyer said. “We had 19 applicants in the first round of advertising, and those applicants may still be considered.” Two new applicants responded to the advertisement posted on Feb. 7, Engelmeyer said. Islamorada is also seeking the next village manager, following Oravec’s departure six months into the job. Per a separation agreement, Oravec is receiving pay and benefits through March 31. Interested applicants have until Feb. 18 to submit their resumes to the search firm, Colin Baenziger & Associates, which ultimately assisted the village in picking Oravec. Village council members agreed to a job posting with a salary range between $150,000 and $200,000. Council members will hear from Colin Baenziger on the search effort at a Feb. 17 meeting inside Founders Park Community Center. The search firm hopes to have a list of candidates for council’s consideration no later than March 31. Twenty-three applications sent to Colin Baenziger & Associates as of Feb. 23 shows strong interest in the job, Baenziger said. “If our normal pattern occurs here, we will get at least 100 applications and probably more,” he said.

The Fills contains a limited number of parking spaces for residents and visitors to use. DAVID GROSS/Keys Weekly

PH Inc. hosted a workshop at Founders Park Community Center on Feb. 3 as part of the "discussion" phase of the community-driven master planning process for the Fills. Javier Omana, director of land planning services at CPH Inc., led the discussion and presented two concepts for the Fills, which is owned by the state and managed by the village. The hybrid event was available for virtual and in-person attendance and was also broadcast on Comcast channel 77. “We have had stakeholder interviews, questionnaires, the red dot/green dot exercise (held in December). … We have the previous council’s wish list and a multitude of information going back to 2010,” Omana said about plans for the Fills, which is composed of Tea Table Fill, Indian Key Fill, and Lignumvitae Key Fill. The area stretches between MM 79.6 and 77.7. Both “visions” presented by Omana were similar in that trail enhancements, restrooms, minimized parking, recreational water access and planting of native vegetation/ mangrove protection were prioritized. Vision A includes a trail head at the north end of the Fills, which could include parking, a gazebo and an information center. A trolley could make stops at each Fill while transporting kayakers and paddleboarders. Vision B does not include a trail head, but does include a trolley plan.

Both concepts show Tea Table Fill as having a kayak launch area, pavilions, limited parking and trail realignment. Indian Key Fill would be the “activity fill,” Omana said. It could include a boat ramp, kayak launch, trolley stop, pavilions and limited parking. Lignumvitae Key Fill could be blocked off to vehicular traffic, but both visions include a trolley stop and planting of native vegetation. The survey was available for public input through Feb. 8. This input will be compiled into a final vision plan concept to be presented to the village council on Feb. 17. Additionally, CPH will seek guidance from the council regarding presentation of the plan to the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. "Discussion" is the fourth phase of the Fills Vision Master Plan, and was preceded by "Design," "Discovery" and "Dream" phases. The second part of the “Discussion” phase will be CPH’s presentation to the council on Feb. 17. The final phase of the Master Plan process will be the “Document” phase, with a target date of March 10 for the design report. The master plan is slated to be finalized in April. The village encouraged everyone in the community to be a part of this master planning effort. More information is at thefillsmasterplan.com. — Contributed

AQUEDUCT BOARD DISMISSES PROPOSAL FOR FREE HEALTH INSURANCE WITHDRAWN AGENDA ITEM WOULD HAVE PROVIDED COVERAGE FOR LIFE A diver explores the coral reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary off Key Largo. T

wo items on the Feb. 8 Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority board meeting agenda raised eyebrows and drew harsh criticism from nearly anyone who pays a water bill in the Florida Keys. If approved, the proposals, which initially were included on the consent agenda and set for rubber-stamp approval without discussion, would have provided free health insurance for life to any FKAA board member with at least eight years of board service, as well as their spouse or domestic partner. The second proposal would have extended the same insurance benefits to the utility’s top executives, even after their employment contracts end. The board deleted the two proposals from the agenda at the start of their meeting and did not discuss them at all. Board member Cara Higgins told the Keys Weekly

before the meeting, “The staff proposal to give board members and their spouses health insurance for life needs to be fully and openly discussed by the board. I do not support this item as presented and will not vote to approve it.” Longtime Key West business leader Virginia Panico addressed the concerns of many when she spoke during the public comment period. “Thank you for pulling these items,” Panico told the board. “I also suggest that you have an actuary look at what this would cost. It’s interesting that this even came up, especially after the county in the 1990s eliminated benefits for life due to the cost. In the 2000s, the mosquito control board also ended it. “These proposals were quite shocking to a lot of people. The phone calls I received were angry. I hope this doesn’t turn into you guys instead including the benefits for life into employment contracts. People want to be sure this doesn’t happen.”

PROPOSALS INCLUDE $20M FOR KEYS STEWARDSHIP JIM McCARTHY

jim@keysweekly.com

F

ull funding for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act appears to be on a better track than in prior years in Tallahassee. On Feb. 2, the Florida House and Senate’s appropriations committees unveiled their budget proposals. Both included $20 million for a Stewardship Act that funds critical water quality projects. Budget proposals for the critical Keys program fall in line with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recommended budget for the upcoming 2022-23 fiscal year, which begins in July. An initial House spending proposal last year included $2 million for the Stewardship Act. A Senate budget proposed nothing for the program. With legislative approval by the end of session, DeSantis signed a budget last year with a full $20 million in Stewardship funds and an additional $5 million for land acquisition. State Rep. Jim Mooney worked to include full funding for the Stewardship Act last year. Even with budget proposals including the $20 million, Mooney told the Keys Weekly a long road is ahead. “We are continuing to work our request through the system,” Mooney said, “but we

are staying confident that as we start the process through the budget that there will be appropriations that fall into place.” State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez told the Keys Weekly that she’s delighted to see that the House and Senate budgets have included the $20 million. “While the fight isn’t over until the end of session, I feel that we’re starting from a position of strength, and this will help us as budget negotiations proceed,” she said. “The Florida Keys are an ecological gem, and all efforts should be made to preserve it for generations to come.” In a press release, Monroe County Mayor David Rice said the county is thankful to House and Senate leadership for their recognition and support of funding that protects valuable Florida Keys resources. In 2016, the state allocated $5 million for the Stewardship Act. A year later, that amount jumped to $13.3 million. In 2020, DeSantis slashed Stewardship funding by $10 million to offset the state’s financial losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 60-day session in Tallahassee concludes March 11.

epairs to Wilkinson’s Point and the beach jetty at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier are nearing. The contractor’s equipment will be arriving on the site during the week of Feb. 14. During the repair work on Wilkinson’s Point, the beach, lagoon and parking areas will remain open. Once Wilkinson’s Point is complete and active construction moves to the beach jetty, the beach, lagoon and some parking areas will be closed. The boat ramp will remain open throughout the project. Information regarding any required closures during the project will be shared when available. “The county understands that any closure is an inconvenience and appreciates the community’s ongoing understanding and support to complete the work as safely and quickly as possible,” said John Allen, Monroe County’s director of parks and beaches. “From talking with those who have been inquiring about Harry Harris Park repairs, the community is extremely appreciative that this project is starting.” Harry Harris Park, Wilkinson’s Point and the beach jetty had substantial damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. B

obbi and Hank Freeland met on a blind date, the first (and last) for either of them. Nine months later they were married and began a 58-year adventure of traveling around the world, raising children, scuba diving and hot tubbing. They credit their hot tub for providing the foundation for their happy marriage. Well, not their hot tub exactly, but the many open, trusting conversations they had together. Both agreed that communication is the key to building a lasting relationship. As Bobbi stated, “We didn’t keep secrets. If something was bothering one of us, we put it on the table and worked through it.” Hank is a retired TWA pilot who flew internationally, and Bobbi sometimes flew along. Frequently, they would expand those trips into scuba diving adventures and have visited many reefs around the world. In 1985 they came to the Florida Keys on vacation. After diving the reefs here, they looked at each other (probably in a hot tub) and asked themselves, “Why would we dive anywhere else?” For the following 37 years, that is exactly what they did; first as part-time residents and then as full-time once their children left home to build lives of their own. They bought a bayfront property and, over the years,

Hank and Bobbi Freeland. CONTRIBUTED

created a home for themselves, their boats, kayaks, fire pit and hot tub. Hank is an outdoor person who enjoys planning and completing projects; their home reflects this passion. Bobbi loves fishing and is involved with Wild Women on the Water, a women’s fishing club. She is also involved with the JOY Center, an organization that provides activities such as yoga, ukulele classes, writing workshops, computer help sessions and guest speakers. Bobbi goes to play mahjongg. Through mahjongg, she has experienced the sense of community JOY center provides when the participants come together; either at the various temporary sites they have inhabited and, more recently, virtually. Bobbi is adamant about the JOY Center and its possibility of expanding into a larger, permanent Upper Keys community center. Hank and she are staunch supporters of the work the JOY Center board members and others are doing to make that possibility a reality. They express two driving forces behind their support. One is that several of their friends have lost spouses and are in the midst of reinventing their

lives as older, single adults. As “older youth,” they could benefit from a community center that is in a permanent location and available to the public daily. The second is based on an 11,000mile backroads trip she and Hank took last year. They sought out small towns to visit. Almost every one had a community center, thriving with programs to benefit the multi-generational nature of the community. They both would like to see the Upper Keys have a community center that serves the needs of the teenage through senior citizen population. Bobbi and Hank have two sons, one in Colorado and another in northern Florida. As I left, they invited me to come back later that evening to join in an AA (appetizers and drinks) party they were hosting in celebration of their oldest son’s recent cancer diagnosis and treatment plan that included a result of full recovery. It struck me as I was driving home how indicative their invitation was of the people who live in the Keys. I had just met Bobbi and Hank; they didn’t really know anything about me, only the sense of community we had built at their kitchen table. In that discussion Bobbi and Hank defined JOY as living. And I thought, that is what they are striving for, an Upper Keys community center that provides a permanent, daily opportunity to build community and well-being. More information about JOY is at justolderyouthinc.org.

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 10, 2022

A PRIVATEER AND GROCERY STORE OPERATOR

THE I OLDEST MAN IN KEY WEST BRAD BERTELLI is an author, speaker, and Florida Keys historian. His latest book, “The Florida Keys Skunk Ape Files,” is a fun blend of two of his favorite subjects — Florida Keys history and the Skunk Ape.

n a letter written dated March 3, 1935, poet Robert Frost wrote: “The oldest person I could find in the Key West grave yard yesterday (Sunday) was a veteran of the war of 1812 who died in Key West at 108 years of age. But may have lived to be older than that. His inscription wound up ‘A good citizen for 65 years.’ He must have been a bad citizen for 43 years then. That’s what undermined him and shortened his life.” The tombstone honored Thomas Romer, the long-lived African Bahamian who was born in Nassau, New Providence, in 1788. The marker also reads, in part, “In memory of Thomas Romer, Privateer in the War of 1812.” He served, in his way, at the behest of the U.S. Navy. During the war, Romer worked as a privateer, a form of legalized, or government-sanctioned, piracy. A privateer worked under the authority of a letter of marque. A host country issued letters of marque that authorized private citizens to attack ships from another country during times of war. A privateer was permitted, by law, to attack ships that were flying flags from countries with which the host country was at war. In 1812, the United States was warring with Great Britain, and Romer was working to disrupt the activities of British ships. Working as a privateer was like working as a pirate, but with a few outstanding caveats. While both pirates and privateers essentially performed the same job and did so in the same conquering manner, a pirate attacked whomever they wanted, and the captain and crew retained the entire prize. The privateer used his own ship, hired his own crew, and paid his men out of his own pocket. In exchange for the right to attack ships, a percentage of any prize the privateer could secure was given to the government sponsoring the letter of marque. Romer settled on Key West during its infancy as an American territory, sometime around 1826. He then began to fulfill the other phrase etched into the marker at his gravesite: “a good citizen for 65 years.” While writing for the Miami Herald in 1969, Wright Langley wrote that Romer operated a grocery store that catered to the ships arriving in the harbor during his many decades in Key West. He provided fruits and other food stores to Navy ships that pulled into port, as well as to private and commercial vessels. It can be imagined that at least some of the produce he sold came from the farm owned by Sandy Cornish and his wife, Lillah. The two arrived in Key West in the 1840s and purchased a farm near Truman Avenue and Simonton Street circa 1850. Cornish, who bought and fought his way out of slavery, became one of the island’s richest men. According to Jefferson B. Browne, who wrote the fantastic peek into the island’s early history, “Key West: The Old and New,” published in 1912: “Old Uncle Tom Romer was known to every officer and man in the Navy of the old days.”

The grave marker of Thomas Rome. RACHEL KELLER/ Contributed

There is a contemporary account of Romer’s funeral service printed on a strip of newspaper print that is undated. The author’s name is omitted, though it was clearly written from not just a Key West resident but by someone who knew Romer: “Poor old Tom Romer is no more. The laughing, genial face of ‘Old Tom’ is (illegible) death. Never to flash with humor, or his tongue to quaintly tell with philosophical resignation his sorrows and mistakes during a century of life. How many years he lived no man can tell, he told the writer of this notice barely a year ago, that he was one hundred and fourteen years old. … Tom’s body was seen at the house of his daughter Nora Vickers and was transferred, followed by his numerous friends, to the Baptist Church on Thomas Street, where the funeral activities were conducted by the Pastor, Revd. W.C. Vesta, Huger, Butler and Weeks. His friends were numerous and highly respectable; their dress was appropriate and their deportment admirable. The respectable portion of our colored people cannot be surpassed anywhere, in these particulars; the absence of white friends, and we know he had many, was commented upon.” The writer ends his account with a nod to Shakespeare. “Alas poor Tom, I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. Peace to his ashes.”

Meetings to discuss countywide roads Monroe County will host two public meetings regarding its Countywide Roads Adaptation Project and planning efforts. The meetings will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom webinar. The meetings will focus on the progress of Monroe County’s Roadway Vulnerability Study and Capital Plan, which identified county-maintained roads vulnerable to sea-level rise, identified a way to rank them, and recommended a schedule for road adaptation to the year 2045. Various neighborhood roads have been recommended for elevation to address flooding from the impacts of sea-level rise and climate change. Ideas that may be discussed during these virtual meetings will be brought to the Board of County Commissioners during a regular meeting for further discussion and approval. The Zoom links for the workshops will be available on the county website calendar, www.monroecounty-fl.gov/ calendar. New exhibit at History of Diving Museum The History of Diving Museum invites the public to visit the new featured exhibit Dive Into Art: FantaSea. This is the fourth collaborative art show with the museum, Art Guild of the Purple Isles and local students. The limited-time show encompasses fantasy elements tied to the ocean: mermaids, pirates, sea monsters and more, as well as literary themes such as fairy tales, fantastical poems and epics. The museum celebrated the opening of the exhibit by inviting teachers and students from the participating schools — Coral Shores High School, Key Largo School, Key Largo Middle School, Ocean Studies Charter School, Plantation Key School, Stanley Switlik Elementary School and Treasure Village Montessori — to an afternoon preview. Following the preview, art guild board members hosted a virtual walkthrough and in-person tour. The exhibit would not have been possible without the help of members and donors contributing to the museum’s Giving Tuesday campaign. In addition, the Featured Exhibit is sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Florida Keys & Key West Tourism Development Council, State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. The exhibit will be on view through April 20. The art will then travel to Monroe County public libraries.

ISLAND VIBES The Garden Walk shows how different property owners interpret Keys style CHARLOTTE TWINE

charlotte@keysweekly.com

T

he Garden Club of the Upper Keys is in its 70th year. Founded in 1952, the club was given a charter and non-profit status by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs in 1956, then settled in its permanent Tavernier home — officially named the Francis Tracy Garden Center — in 1962. Per its website, the club even has a mission: “to foster, promote, develop, protect and conserve the natural beauties of the Upper Keys through education and publicity.” The Garden Walk has been conducted since 1980, and will be held this year on Saturday, Feb. 19 — “rain or shine,” the club says — and is a way to educate the public about the club’s mission. If this all sounds very formal and official, don’t let it get to you. The Garden Walk is a visual blast and a boost for a weary soul. As Kathy Holmes, the Garden Walk chair, explains it, each of the five properties on the tour personifies, in its own way, “the Keys Disease.” And as locals know, the Keys disease ain’t formal. “Once the Keys Disease is in your system, it’s hard to get out — the weather, the water, the island vibe, the style,” she said. “These five houses are all styled in a different way. It’s how different people interpret the Keys.” For example, Villa Verde at MM93, the first garden on the tour, is a sprawling, six-lot hammock of trees with lots of private places to sit and en-

joy artwork and greenery in peace and quiet. Two trees seem to be straight out of a fairy tale. They have wooden face sculptures placed on them that gaze out at passersby as if they wanted to have a conversation. The next garden, called Native Oasis, at MM90, abuts a lagoon and has so many native plants that it has been designated a “Certified Wildlife Habitat” by the National Wildlife Federation. There’s also a major cool factor here: the property has a camper, houseboat and a tiny cottage in a unified color theme of juicy green and bright shades of blue. There are so many places to hang out and lounge that a party of the century could be hosted here with no problem. The Keys Charmer, at MM 89, has a heron theme in its carved wooden entryway in the front and in its backyard sculptures, which are placed next to water fountains. And Our Morada, at MM86, is an unabashed showstopper. Spread across three and a half lots, it has a putting green with a sand trap as well as a lounge area with a fire pit and a capacious ocean view. Finally, Casa de Palma at Revellations II, at MM 87, is, as its name suggests, palm crazy. Visitors can gaze at 30 species of palms while walking toward the tiki hut, which is sittin’ on the dock of the bay. And if an Otis Redding song just came to your mind, we don’t blame you. That means you’ve caught the Keys Disease. The Garden Walk presented by the Garden Club of the Upper Keys will take place on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 on the day of the event. Tickets are available online at gardenclubupperkeys. org and at the Francis Tracy Garden Center, which is located at 94040 Overseas Hwy, Tavernier. No pets. Refreshments, the Cousins Maine Lobster food truck, an art show by the Art Guild of the Purple Isles, vendors and plant sales will also be provided at the garden center in addition to the walk.

SAILING THE SEAS Regatta proceeds bring new sailboats for youth program

From Key Largo’s Rowell’s Park, nearly 200 kids hopped into their sailboats for the 13th annual Buccaneer Blast Regatta, presented by Red Hospitality & Leisure, on Feb. 4-6. Young sailors from Caribbean countries and various U.S. states took to Blackwater Sound, where sun and light winds greeted them as they showcased their sailing abilities. Rosa Lamela, event organizer, said the proceeds from the regatta support new sailboats for the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program, which is part of the Upper Keys Sailing Club. Roughly 200 kids participated in the summer program last year. More information is at msysp.org. — Jim McCarthy

What is snail maintenance, you ask? Well, there are sea snails that feed on our corals. They come out at night and suck the coral polyps right off their coral skeleton. During the day, they retreat to the branches of the coral or hide underneath it. On our snail maintenance dives, we hunt for these snails and remove them from our planted coral colonies. We do this under permit from the sanctuary as part of a more holistic approach to reef restoration. Stay tuned to what I.CARE is doing as more amazing science and restoration work are coming. The reefs are an entire ecosystem, so rebuilding them for long-term success requires paying attention to all of the different, complementary parts that make up that microcosm.

CONSERVATION TIP The corals we plant have a higher chance of success if we keep the waters clean of trash and runoff. The better the water quality, the higher the survival rates of corals tend to be.

I.CARE ICARE is doing a lot to preserve and rebuild our reefs in our community. They are solely funded by the community. Donations are very appreciated and it's easy to do. Simply go to www.icareaboutcoral. org and hit the donate button.

charming little donut truck is taking the Upper Keys by storm. Sandbar Donuts opened in May 2021. In a short time, the delicious donuts gained popularity with locals, who come out each weekend to get their fix. And who can blame them? These donuts are hot and fresh, and always made to order. They offer 15 completely different flavors, ranging from Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, to chocolate bacon and S’more’s. Get an entire dozen for only $16, or a donut and drink combination for $4.50. Gourmet coffee flavors include coconut caramel crunch and triple chocolate, which change daily and can be ordered hot or iced. Special daily donut flavors are also offered, including raspberry, orange and banana, to name a few. Family-owned and -operated, the donut business is a side gig for owners Paula and Jordan Quade, who had for a long time dreamed of owning and operating a hot cake donut truck. When the pandemic started and circumstances changed for them, they seized

the opportunity. Jordan is a line worker at the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and Paula has been a stay-at-home mom ever since. Where did the inspiration come from? In 2008 while in Maryland, where Jordan is from, they first discovered hot cake donuts and were blown away at how good they were. Instantly they knew that someday they wanted to bring that experience to the Florida Keys. The two have put a lot of effort into the business and thoroughly enjoyed crafting all of the donut and coffee flavors they offer. Even their young son, Jace, pitches in every now and then by selling fresh lemonade on the side. Sandbar Donuts is located at MM 102 in the Sundiver Snorkel Tours parking lot. They are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to noon, and hope to expand those hours to Thursdays and Fridays. Their wide variety of delicious donuts and coffee, coupled with their affordable prices, make them a fun and very accessible breakfast option for the whole family. Visit Sandbar Donuts on Facebook to learn more.

LADY WEIGHTLIFTERS HEAD TO STATES

THE STUDENT OF THE WEEK

A second consecutive appearance in the program’s fourth year JIM McCARTHY

jim@keysweekly.com

S

ix Coral Shores girls weightlifters will test their strength this weekend as they travel north for state championships at Port St. Joe High School. A weightlifting program is excelling in its fourth year under Coach Erin Hamilton. On Jan. 22, the weightlifting took to districts at Miami CrossFit. There, they came away with the District 16-1A championship. Among the lifters heading to state championships are Annavera Peixoto, who returns to the competition for the second straight year, Makena WooletStockton, Hailey Cooper, Laira Gomer, Jannille Arias and Sydney Eysenbach. Hamilton will drive the athletes roughly 10 hours north for the state competition. “It’s exciting to see so many girls excelling,” Hamilton said. What started with eight weightlifters in the program’s first year grew through the years to around 18 competitors in 2021 and 30 this year. Hamilton said the team was able to fill almost every weight class during competition. “It’s been such an amazing progression,” Hamilton said. Normal weightlifting competitions in Florida tally a competitor’s bench and clean-and-jerk scores. This year, however, the state added snatch as a separate event. In snatch, the lifter lifts the bar as high as possible and pulls herself under it in a squat position. Hamilton said the weightlifting team is sending a few competitors to partake in the snatch. Hamilton said the sport of weightlifting gives competitors self-confidence. Weightlifting competitions usually see competitors rooting on each other. “Everyone is cheering for everyone,” Hamilton said. “Even if you’re competing against someone, you're still rooting for them to hit their lift. When someone is struggling on the bench, you’ll have everyone in that weight class cheering them on, no matter what school they’re at. It’s an engaging and thrilling experience.” Teams in divisions 1A, 2A and 3A will compete at states at Port St. Joe High School from Feb. 10-12. The Class 1A competition will take place Saturday, Feb. 12.

LUCKY IN LOVE AND BUSINESS Key Largo couple reflects on scuba charter success MELINDA VAN FLEET www.keysweekly.com

L

ocal residents Glenn Wright and Jill Kuehnert created a unique business model that caters to a personalized scuba experience. They were awarded Tripadvisor Travelers Choice for 2021. Keys Weekly recently sat down with co-owner Kuehnert to discuss all things lucky. Here’s what she had to say. It's just so remarkable that we turned out to be good business partners. I recently told Glenn, "You do what you say you're gonna do, you pay attention to what I need to do, you make space and show up." We are a really good match. My husband Glenn and I have been married for over 10 years and met at a party in Singapore, where we both lived and worked. We both had jobs with U.S.-based companies, and Glenn is originally from South Africa. After 10 years in Singapore, we moved back to the U.S. after Glenn's employment ended. I initially started a conversation with him about golf, as he was in the golf industry. But when he basically said he didn't want to talk about golf, we started talking about his true passion — diving. I was interested in learning how to dive, so it was perfect. Glenn dove on the weekends when he could, and hence I started to dive as well, and now we are both certified dive masters. We would take long weekend trips around Asia. After his job ended, we took six months to travel and see where we wanted to live; we chose the Keys. The weather in Singapore is consistently 80-90 degrees year-round because it's on the equator. However, they have even more mosquitoes than they do here. Glenn started working with another dive boat in Islamorada and noticed an opportunity in offering private charters. Other dive boats have

more divers, so they spend more time waiting for other people and often feel rushed. With that business niche in mind, we purchased a 29-foot World Cat, which has the perfect comfortable setup for a private dive charter. We take no more than four divers and two guests, six passengers total. And offer only one charter a day, so we can be flexible and offer the best time of day to go. So, it's important to us to make sure everyone has the best experience possible. Not only do we offer snacks such as pretzels and chips on the boat, but also gummy worms, Glenn's favorite. We also include underwater photos for your memories.

Glenn and I came up with the name Lucky Fish Scuba because in America, we may say something like, "We are lucky ducks that we get to sit outside and have this view." In South Africa, they say, "we are lucky fish." Also, since we don't do any fishing or spear diving, we say the fish are lucky too because we are looking at them and not catching them. It was perfect!

Lucky Fish Scuba was started in July of 2018, and about a year-and-a-half in, COVID-19 hit. The shutdown allowed us to take some time and look at our business; see what we could improve upon. Then in July of 2020, we were featured in a popular blog, “Girls That Scuba” after I reached out to connect. I am fascinated by the marketing of small businesses and communication. Since we have added some incredible crew members to help Glenn with the dives, I can focus on the business piece behind the scenes. I am also the marketing chair and secretary for the Upper Keys BPW. Lucky Scuba Fish is also excited to offer sunset cruises, snorkeling, and have an exclusive agreement with Marinelab. They give us one of their marine biologists to guide eco tours in the mangroves. The Marinelab guys have authorization to temporarily collect little creatures— seahorses, starfish, urchins, slugs and squirts. Our guests love this unique charter. We also offer very cool night dives. The other week, Glenn had a night dive and said he had never seen so many sea turtles — 20plus turtles swimming around in the dark. It's a completely different experience and something you will never forget. Believe it or not, we still like to go diving on vacation. We hope to go back to Singapore as there are some spots in Asia on our list. I'll say, though, we disagree on the concept of diving in the rain. Glenn's always like, "You're gonna get wet anyway, it doesn't matter if it's raining; who cares!" And I'm like, "Yes, it's true you're gonna get wet anyway, but you want to dry off eventually." All in all, I guess you could say we are lucky fish! You can connect with Lucky Fish Scuba via their website www.luckyfishscuba.com and follow on FB and IG @ luckyfishscuba.

BOOED UP

KEYS COMMENTERS SUGGEST WHERE TO MEET YOUR SPECIAL SOMEONE

B

ooed up. Per that esteemed reference source, UrbanDictionary.com, the term “booed up” means the following: “In a relationship, esp. in the manner that the two involved seem joined at the hip and don’t do anything that doesn’t involve each other. This can potentially irritate friends.” Are you among the irritated in the Keys and not “booed up”? Especially as Valentine’s Day is coming on fast? Relax. Keys Weekly has got you covered. We conducted research on Facebook (we know, we know) on a local community page and asked the following question: Where can you meet your special someone in the Keys? Surprisingly, we got some solid advice. At least 80 commenters left 278 comments on this post, and we’d like to share what they had to say. First of all, we did have quite a few naysayers: “There is no hope here! Everyone is booed up or just looking to hook up! The Keys has to be the worst place to be single. Just being real,” said one female. Then we had a lot of jokers, such as Key West’s David Sloan: “The water at the Green Parrot will get you pregnant.” And three females wrote in to agree with him.

Savanna Edwards just celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary in October with her husband, whom she met at Sharkey’s in Key Largo — and she had a T-shirt made celebrating that fact. CONTRIBUTED

Another commenter suggested this particular Keys online source: “Keysso.net … the most popular gated community in the Keys.” However, many posters did actually have useful advice. Quite a few wrote that they met their boo in a Keys bar. For example, in our research, we discovered not just one but five couples met at Sharkey’s Sharkbite Grill in Key Largo. Savanna Edwards just celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary in October with her husband, whom she met at Sharkey’s — and she had a T-shirt made celebrating that fact. And Jordan Budnik met her boyfriend of four months at Sharkey’s. “He’s the most awesome person I’ve ever met. He’s phenomenal,” Budnik said. So, why is Sharkey’s such a great place to meet people? we asked her. “It attracts locals,” said Budnik. “You’re always going to meet someone interesting.” She did have one caveat about meeting people in bars: Don’t hang out too late. “We’re both not bar hoppers,” she said. “We were there for dinner. The Keys Kritters tend to come out of the mangroves at 3 a.m.” Quite a few commenters met their significant others at a Keys bar. Shayne Messina met her husband of 17 years at Havana Jack’s in Key Colony Beach. And here are other bars where Keys locals met their boos: Key West’s Half Shell Raw Bar, Smokin’ Tuna Saloon and Cowboy Bills Honky Tonk Saloon; Stock Island’s Hogfish Bar; and Islamorada’s Hog Heaven.

Writers commended the following sage advice about meet-up places from John Seckinger: “It depends if you are a guy or a girl and your age… if you are a girl... dive school, work on a fishing boat, gym, Home Depot… if you are a guy… Home Depot, dance class, cooking class, church groups, yoga class, etc.” Barbara Whitesell wrote in to second that advice — she actually married her scuba dive instructor. Also, posters approved the following tips from Leah Benner: “The bocce court? The gym, the golf course, at Key West local events like Santa con, full moon party, zombie bike ride, if you like boating, a bar where boaters hang out? Volunteer groups that have a lot of social events for fundraisers.” Indeed, Keys special events and parties got the thumbs up from Amy Soto. She met her husband of 24 years at Key West’s Mallory Square sunset celebration — he is a tightrope walker. And Islamorada’s Jennifer Oughton met her husband of 13 years at the full moon party at Morada Bay. And let’s not forget that tried-and-true way of definitely running into someone: crashing your cart into theirs at the grocery store. Yes, this did really happen to Key West’s Anne L. Rice at Publix. She literally ran her grocery cart into another (male) customer’s in the produce aisle … and he later became her boyfriend. But not right then and there. “I was so embarrassed,” she recalled. “I was looking the other way and crashed into him. Then I ran into him again at a restaurant. It’s a small town. And he said, ‘You’re the one who crashed into me.’” He gave her his card, they became friends on Facebook … and they started dating two years ago. But perhaps it’s always best to keep in mind what our mothers told us: Use your judgment wisely. As Becca “Keys Chick” Lundy wrote, “Met my husband when I moved here. Set your standards and expectations and don’t waver from that list. It’s hard to find a partner here, though, honestly. If they match up to you, grab them!”

Jordan Budnik met her boyfriend of four months, Tony, at Sharkey’s in Key Largo. “He’s the most awesome person I’ve ever met,” she said. CONTRIBUTED

’CANES CRUISE TO COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Boys varsity basketball team sweeps island opponents

barrage of scoring propelled the Coral Shores boys varsity basketball team to a win against the Marathon Dolphins, 59-20, on Feb. 4 at Marathon High School. With the victory, the Hurricanes were crowned county champions following a clean sweep of their fellow island rivals. For the first time in decades, the Hurricanes beat the Dolphins and Key West Conchs in the same season. The Hurricanes bested the Conchs in two close contests on Jan. 18, 56-49, and Feb. 2, 59-52. The ’Canes routed the Dolphins in both games by more than 30 points. “Monroe County has a tremendous basketball tradition, and winning the county is always taken very seriously by all of the schools,” said coach Jared Mandozzi. “If you go to any of the games over the years you quickly see how different it is when the schools play each other. Coral Shores has had some great players and teams over the years, but this is the first time winning the county championship and to do it via sweep going 4-0 is that much sweeter. “ Mandozzi said sophomore guard/forward Isaac Holmes and sophomore point guard Isaac Rivera led the team this season. Holmes registered 21 points and 10 rebounds in a win against Marathon. Gabe Delgado had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals. The No. 5 seed in the ’Canes lost a close game to the No. 4 seed Palmer Trinity, 49-44, at the district tournament in Miami on Feb. 8. The ’Canes played a tough schedule, including non-district games against powerhouse schools in LaSalle, Varela and Ransom Everglades. The team won eight of their last 10 games. — Jim McCarthy 1.
