Coin toss decides Marathon City Council seat for Robyn Still ALEX RICKERT

n a second special meeting on Jan. 31 to fill the seat left vacant by former councilman Trevor Wofsey’s resignation, the Marathon City Council flipped a coin to determine the appointment of Robyn Still over fellow finalist Jody “Lynny Thompson” Del Gaizo.

In a continuation of the deadlock from their Jan. 24 special meeting, the four seated city council members remained in a 2-2 tie throughout the session, with Mayor John Bartus and councilman Steve Cook in support of Still and councilmen Luis Gonzalez and Dan Zieg in support of Del Gaizo.

In a unanimous vote to settle the nomination and avoid violations of Marathon’s city charter, the council approved a coin toss. Still deferred the call for the toss to Del Gaizo, who chose “heads.” With MCSO Captain Don Hiller as the officiant, the “tails” side of the coin handed Still the victory.

The result was later confirmed with a video review.

Opening the meeting with an address to Del Gaizo, Cook reiterated his concern from the previous two meetings that Del Gaizo’s appointment had been pre-determined in advance of official city council discussion and in violation of Sunshine Law. “I think that you would not want to sit on this board with even a hint that it was done improperly,” said Cook. “I ask you now to withdraw your name from this nomination process.”

Addressing the council, Del Gaizo reaffirmed her commitment to her candidacy. “I understand where you’re coming from. The last couple of weeks, with everything that I’ve heard and what I’ve been through, triple it from what you’ve heard,” she said. “I’m not aware of all the workings behind my back. My intention of running for city council is true to the heart. I love this community and this island. I’m

a little disappointed, but I’m strong, I will bounce back, and you will see me again.”

Zieg requested further clarification on Cook’s assertions. “Mr. Cook has referred a number of times to all the back room things that have gone on,” he said. “I think this would be an appropriate time in the sunshine to find out what the hell he’s talking about.”

“When I was seeking out a replacement for Mr. Wofsey, I kept hearing, ‘What difference does it make? It’s already selected,’” said Cook. “I heard that from numerous people around town. So to me, that is the hint of impropriety. I think that it goes a long way to showing that there’s a problem here. Those kinds of coconut telegraph things have some potential for truth. I would just assume that we stay away from that potential for truth.”

Following speeches by both Del Gaizo and Still as well as further deliberation among council members, City Attorney Steve Williams informed the deadlocked council that they were authorized explicitly under Florida statute to “draw lots” or use any method in which there was no opportunity for skill or bias to influence a true 50-50

outcome. “The most recent example was in the town of Chiefland, Florida,” said Williams. “There was a dead tie in an election and they drew straws.”

Still has been a resident of Marathon since 2016 after a 22-year career in law enforcement. She and her husband Chris own and operate The Tackle Box in Marathon. “I am very honored to be appointed to the City Council,” said Still. “I am open minded and will respectfully listen to the positions and viewpoints of my fellow councilmen and the public so we can all work together to continue to make Marathon an amazing city.”

Del Gaizo was gracious in defeat, embracing Still immediately after the coin toss. “I loved running a clean campaign,” she said. “What an eye opener to the other side of the coin. Thank you to my supporters. It was difficult being bullied these few weeks.”

Still will serve on the city council until the November 2022 election, when she may seek to retain her seat by popular vote. She will be sworn in at the next regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.

COMMISSIONERS TAKE TALLAHASSEE A BREAKNECK PACE IS THE RULE AS COUNTY REPS ADVOCATE FOR LOCAL ISSUES

or their visit to Tallahassee on Jan. 18 and 19, Monroe County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson handed commissioners Michelle Coldiron and Holly Raschein a schedule that would have made the average person dizzy just by looking at it: The packed agenda included at least 20 meetings and two pending ones.

The occasion? The county’s lobbying teams and commissioners were in the state capital for the legislative session to advocate for local issues and also to attend Legislative Day for the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) as well as for the Small County Coalition.

Coldiron described the pace to Keys Weekly. “It’s fast and furious,” she said. “We got into the airport at 11, grabbed a bite of lunch, then met with (State Rep. Jim) Mooney. We were running from the House side to the Senate side to the governor’s office.”

Tennyson provided a list of the issues to keep mentioning to governor’s staff, senators and representatives as they took meetings: stewardship funding for water quality projects, pump-out funding, anchoring bill, infrastructure money … and much more.

Both Coldiron and Raschein emphasized that Sunshine Law issues did not come into play. The Sunshine Law decrees that meetings of government agencies and representatives — and discussions of pending local issues — shall be open to the public.

“When Michelle and I are taking meetings in Tallahassee, we are there to discuss the county’s legislative agenda, which has already been publicly discussed and voted on in a BOCC meeting prior to any commissioners traveling to Tallahassee to advocate on behalf of the County,” said Raschein.

The commissioners also noted that Raschein’s experience in the capital as a state representative was an asset for the meetings.

“Holly still knows so many of the elected officials there,” pointed out Coldiron. “Even though we didn’t have a set meeting, she would jump into offices and I would just follow her: ‘Hey, we’re here.’ We got meetings with legislators we might not have had. I presented more as a ‘boots on the ground’ approach and her whole way was saying, ‘How much more time do you have before you vote?’ She had a different lingo.

It made it really good, because we could play off of each other.”

Coldiron pointed out that she is running for second vice president of the FAC, and therefore is on a path to be its president in four years.

“This means that Monroe County will have a bigger presence and be in Tallahassee more often,” she said, pointing out that the goal for all 67 counties in Florida is “to protect home rule.”

The issues that were most important to Raschein during this visit included “continued funding of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, advocating on issues related to Citizens Property Insurance, and working to refine legislation related to anchoring and mooring.”

But even after this whirlwind January visit, the commissioners will still have more chances to represent Monroe County’s taxpayers at the state capital.

“During the state of Florida’s 60-day legislative session, we visit Tallahassee once or twice a month,” said Raschein.

ultiple organizations are offering rewards totaling $7,000 for information regarding the shooting of a federally protected and endangered Key deer.

On the morning of Jan. 27, officers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to the scene of an injured Key deer near Crane Boulevard on Sugarloaf Key. The deer was in obvious distress, displayed a bleeding wound in its upper chest, and only had use of its hind legs. Due to the extent of its injuries, the deer was euthanized on scene and transported to a veterinarian for X-rays of its wound.

Imaging revealed a fragmented projectile in the upper chest cavity, and fragments were later recovered from the lung and surrounding issues. The type of firearm used has not yet been determined.

“We’ve had people harass Key deer every year, but this is the first time I’m aware of that a gun was

used to shoot a deer,” said USFWS agent David Pharo. “This was intentional.”

The deer will be transported to the USFWS forensic laboratory in Ashland, Oregon, where further analysis will be conducted by forensic experts.

USFWS officials are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the culprit’s conviction. In addition, a separate reward of up to $2,000 is offered by Crime Stoppers Miami and the Florida Keys along with SaveOurKeyDeer.org, according to a tweet posted by Crime Stoppers. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or leads to 786-236-2862.

With a remaining population of less than 1,000 individuals, Key deer are protected by both the federal Endangered Species Act and Florida state law. Intentionally killing an animal carries a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a maximum fine of $100,000.

Keys Weekly announces the hiring of Jill Miranda Baker as business development officer for its Upper Keys office, located at 91760 Overseas Highway in Tavernier. A native of South Florida, Miranda Baker is a 25-year resident of Plantation Key. She began her career as a newspaper reporter for a group of community newspapers in Palm Beach County.

“The success of the Keys Weekly Newspapers has always been measured through the efforts of staff. Jill is a welcomed addition to our growing staff between her background and her work within the community,” said publisher Jason Koler. “This will bring a new level of service and support to the business community and our nonprofit partners.”

Miranda Baker spent several years working for Rep. Rick Minton Jr., before joining Mariners Hospital in 1997 as manager of marketing and public relations. In 2005, she became manager of medical services.

In late 2013, she joined the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation as the first executive director — building what became the first-class Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada.

Her service to the Keys community includes being twice past president of the Upper Keys Rotary Club, current board member of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and Islamorada Chamber of Commerce ambassador. She’s also a Take Stock in Children mentor.

She’s held board-level positions with the Good Health Clinic, Treasure Village Montessori Charter School, the Florida Keys Area Health Education Center, the Rural Health Network of Monroe County and the Upper Keys Business & Professional Women. She is a graduate of Leadership Monroe County, Class VII. She’s married to long-time backcountry fishing guide Duane Baker. They have two college-aged children, Mason and Raffie. She is a graduate of Lynchburg College, now University of Lynchburg, with bachelor’s degrees in communications/journalism and sociology, and has a master’s in management from the University of Phoenix.

“As a former reporter, I’ve always been a news junkie who reads many publications,” said Miranda Baker. “I’ve closely followed Keys Weekly, always impressed with their news coverage and their community involvement throughout Monroe County. Publisher Jason Koler and I connected through Rotary, and I’m honored he and publishing partner Britt Myers chose me for this new role and look forward to serving the Upper Keys community.”

RETIRING THE COLORS On Jan. 28, Marathon Boy Scouts held a flag burning ceremony to respectfully retire a collection of the stars and stripes. Scout leader Mark Senmartin described the ceremony: “Every year the scouts put out flag receptacles to collect all of the worn and damaged flags. We then perform a ceremony explaining to the public that once a flag is tattered or torn, it is no longer a fitting emblem of the United States of America. It then needs to be retired properly. That consists of cutting the flag into four pieces while keeping the field of stars intact to represent the inseparable 50 states. Once we have explained the process and thanked the flags for their service, we retire them to a very hot fire to be burned. The following day, people are encouraged to go to the fire pit and collect the brass rings. They represent good luck. Afterwards, the ashes are collected and buried with respect.”

The scouts thanked the City of Marathon, especially Jim Griffith, for helping with the fire pit and allowing the ceremony to take place. The group also thanked the Marathon Fire Department for keeping everyone safe. CONTRIBUTED.

ong Key State Park will host the “Roar of the Train to Hum of the Cars” program on Saturday, Feb 5, 2022. The highlight of this ranger-guided tour is a viewing of a portion of Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway, a site in the park that was unearthed by Hurricane Irma.

Donald Bentley is a park ranger at Long Key State Park, which is a part of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Parks & Recreation. He still remembers the thrill he felt when he and other staff members started to uncover parts of the railroad and tools, a few weeks after Irma swept through the area. The storm did particular damage in the Middle and Lower Keys.

Long Key State Park saw a 7-foot storm surge, which swept away boulders, picnic tables and some bathhouses lining the water, as well as threw beach sand and vegetation all over the area.

“We got the housing set up and the park operational using dozers and loaders,” Bentley said. “We were wiped out.”

From time to time, during the cleanup after Irma, Bentley and other rangers would take walks through the park, keeping in mind that the area was of some historical significance. The staff knew that a portion of a side track from Flagler’s Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway was somewhere within the park, but, other than a slight hump in the land, they never saw physical evidence of a railroad track.

Some time in November 2017 (Irma hit the Keys on Sept. 10), Bentley was taking a walk through the vegetation when he saw a spike. Then a wooden railroad tie. Then a bush axe. He immediately shouted to his coworkers: “I was

like, ‘Oh my god, look at these! Cool! Come here, come here!’ We were like giddy school kids.”

In total, the group found seven wooden railroad ties, segments of railroad track, a few tools and wheels that were used for a handcar to move up and down the tracks. For the history buffs, the find was the equivalent of a goldmine.

Many locals are familiar with the story of wealthy businessman Henry Flagler and his determination to link Key West to the mainland by railroad — a project sometimes called “Flagler’s Folly” at the time — in the early part of the last century. The railroad went into operation in 1912 but was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, which also took hundreds of lives.

According to Bentley, building the railroad cost $32 million, which today is worth a couple billion dollars. And the laborers who constructed the railroad battled extreme conditions during their workday, wearing long pants and shirts in the oppressive heat to avoid mosquito bites, and camping out in tents.

Bentley and coworker Mark Lee — who is no longer with the park — had an idea to build a wooden bridge through the vegetation and “an interpretation area” so visitors can see the sidetrack that was revealed by the storm surge. Using money from the state to rebuild the park after Irma, Bentley and many staff members got together to make the wooden structure.

“It was a team effort,” Bentley said.

And now, Long Key State Park staff want to show off the tracks in a program for the public. Bentley will lead the tour, and he would like the attendees to feel like they are stepping back in time. He will tell the story of Flagler, then describe what the laborers' camp conditions were like.

As a sign in front of the interpretation area says, “Imagine the sounds of the train chugging down the tracks. Maybe you will also hear the sounds of men hammering spikes and swinging pickaxes to break the hard coral rock the railroad was built upon.”

The “Roar of the Train to Hum of the Cars” program will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Long Key State Park. This event is weather permitting and subject to cancellation. The program is free with regular park admission fee.

SONIA ROBINSON’S WORK IS DOGGONE BEAUTIFUL

T

he only thing glowing brighter than Sonia Robinson’s personality are her wildly imaginative paintings. She creates whimsical and often spiritually-inspired compositions that are truly mesmerizing. Robinson slings her paint seemingly non-stop, mostly on wooden panels – and occasionally on canvas – using her signature, mixed-media approach, making her work like nothing else you’ll find.

Robinson’s self-taught style helps to set her work apart from that of other artists. She has a playful, childlike handling of her subjects sure to bring about feelings of joy in the hearts and minds of viewers.

Robinson was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and vacationed to the Keys back in 1970. This began a love affair with the islands that continues to this day. Today, the Florida Keys are her second home and she clearly makes the most of her time here.

Robinson’s expressionism incorporates elements of mixedmedia collage along with occasional typography used to further the positive messages of love, hope and kindness embedded within her creations. Acrylic paint is her primary medium, but Robinson builds depth through vivid color mixtures and variations on thick (tactile) paint applications finished with thin washes of reduced consistency color and gloss. The end result is simply brilliant.

“I originally began my art career as a fine leather craftsman, and I’m still known today as the ‘Leather Lady of Key West,’” said Robinson.

“Over the years, I did collections for Fast Buck Freddie’s and even had

my own business on Greene Street.

I moved into Guild Hall Gallery in the early 1980s and expanded into hand painted clothing. From there it was an easy leap to painting in the format I use today.”

Robinson has an incredibly large body of work spanning subjects from architecture and angels to lovable canines and curious kittens. Regarding the recurring theme of dogs, she said, “My work is ever-evolving and I paint what I love. My husband Gregg and I have always had rescue dogs and they show up in much of my work.”

Robinson is an owner of Guild Hall Gallery located at 614 Duval St. in Old Town Key West. She welcomes guests to come connect with her there and purchase the perfect piece of her art. “My biggest thrill is to be at the gallery and meet people purchasing my artwork.

There’s always a great story to go along with it and the connection is heartfelt for me. I am fortunate to get up every day and do what I love.”

n Jan. 25, when 16-year-old Jayden Ferrell was presented with a GEMS (Great Education Moments for Students) award by the Monroe County School District at its board meeting, many of his family members attended to watch. As Superintendent Theresa Axford handed over the award, his family stood and, smiling broadly, took photos with their phones as his mother, Sophia Baker, jumped into the group who were posing around Jayden.

While introducing 11th-grade Coral Shores High School student Jayden, Amber Archer Acevedo, the coordinator of community relations for the district, said, “Jayden is the true demonstration of perseverance and grit. Jayden was born blind, and he uses braille and braille technology with his advanced placement and academic classes, as well as in his personal life. Jayden has faced many challenges, physically, emotionally and personally. But he never lets that stop him. … He has goals, and we have no doubt he has what it takes to get there.”

Jayden was kind enough to answer some questions from the Keys Weekly: Jayden, how do you do homework in braille? When I hand in homework, it’s written in braille, then it’s printed out in print.

A special computer does that. I have it with me. I bring it to school and take it home.

What extra school activities are you involved in? Drama Club and Mock Trial.

Mock Trial is for people who want to go into law. We go over cases and go to competitions. I like it, it’s fun.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I like arguing, and I like being right.

And I like being paid for it, so I’d like to be a lawyer for my career.

Who do you credit for helping you succeed in school? I guess my parents.

My mom was always really supportive and encouraging and made sure education was important. My dad helped me get through middle school. I probably would have failed middle school if not for my parents. They were hard years. Teenage life is hard. Those years, I really didn’t know who I was yet. I did a lot of dumb things. I wasn’t motivated to do any work. My father started teaching me braille early, when I was 2.

What would you say to other children of color who are having problems and aren’t motivated in school? That’s a hard question. I guess, figure out who you are early in life so you won’t have to deal with it in the future. It was a mental journey I went through. A lot of my family would tell me things, family advice. After they were done, I’d store it away and see how I felt about it. If I liked it, I kept it. If I didn’t, I’d turn it around to something I like.

How can white people support people of color? I don’t know how to answer that.

Maybe less stereotypes.

What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Teleportation.

Because why not? It would make life a lot easier. Either that, or clone myself so one of me could go to school while the other one could sleep.

If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be?

Make the weekends longer. School should be three days, and weekends should be four days. The economy would rise. Thursday to Sunday, everyone would get involved in stuff. The plan can’t go wrong.

What makes you laugh? Not much. I like sitcoms and stuff. They make me laugh.

The last one I saw was “My Wife and Kids.” I guess I just know how to make other people laugh.

Finish this sentence: The hardest part about being a kid is… Living up to parents’ expectations. But when you get to a certain age, you question if you want to live to their expectations or go higher than that. When I was 10, 11, 12, I realized I wanted to be better than this. I don’t want to stay in the Keys the rest of my life. I want to live my life to the fullest and have opportunities they never had.

Jayden, what else would you like to tell the readers of this newspaper? Sleep more.

A NEIGHBOR HELPING NEIGHBORS Richard Malafy honored with the Florida Bar Pro Bono Service Award ALEX RICKERT

hen low-income and disadvantaged citizens in Monroe County need assistance, according to the Florida Bar, there is no one better than attorney Richard A. Malafy.

In a Jan. 20 ceremony at Florida’s Supreme Court, Malafy was named as the 16th judicial circuit’s 2021 recipient of the Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award.

Established in 1981, the award is intended to encourage lawyers to volunteer free legal services to the poor by recognizing those who make public service commitments.

Described as “a beacon of light and hope for the Florida Keys community” by the Florida Bar, a quick scan through Malafy’s impressive resume will blow readers away: six pages of awards and volunteer commitments, particularly as a provider of free legal services in the wake of Hurricane Irma and the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to volunteering with dozens of local organizations and events, Malafy is the go-to legal counsel for the Florida Keys SPCA and sponsors all feline adoption fees for the Clear the Shelters initiative.

Always humble even with a spectacular resume, Malafy carries the attitude that in a small community, neighbors helping neighbors is expected and cherished. He was kind enough to sit down with Keys Weekly to discuss his incredible accomplishment, the steps leading up to it, and what he loves most about serving the Marathon and Florida Keys communities.

How did you get so deeply involved with pro bono work? I was lucky enough to hook up with the group Dale Legal Aid and Judge Bonnie Helms. She’s really made a resurgence with these types of pro bono efforts down here. Until I found this group, I was spending about 100 hours a year doing a bunch of little free legal stuff. Once I got into Dade Legal Aid, it was a little more organized.

They do actual seminars and monthly clinics.

What projects do you remember the most? After Irma, we had basically set up tent cities in Big Pine Key. We were just sitting there in shorts and sneakers doing legal clinics, because people had lost everything and were freaking out. It was crazy. And then COVID hit, so we were trying to help people through the process of applying for unemployment and other benefits. I was actually trying to put a group together to go to the

Bahamas and offer services when they were hit really badly by hurricanes as well, but the Bahamian bar got a little funny about it. We still brought seven boats and we were running supplies over there. During one of the government shutdowns, we also organized a food pantry on Grassy Key for government workers and their families having trouble with supplies and food.

What does it mean to you to be recognized for all this work you do?

Honestly, this probably sounds corny, but it’s the highlight of my career. I moved to Marathon because it’s a small community. I love that you go everywhere and everyone knows your name. You feel safe and secure. So the fact that I’m being recognized by the state for providing services to people in my community who can’t afford it means quite a bit. I jokingly say I’m never going to be a millionaire.

But I also sleep very well at night knowing that I’m doing what I can, not just to make a buck.

What drives you to keep going with the pro bono work? It was kind of ingrained in me. My dad was an obstetrician in New Hampshire, and where we lived was a town of about 3,800 people. He said people used to pay him in firewood if they couldn’t pay, or plow his driveway or something. There’s a lot to be said for neighbors helping neighbors. And I like knowing that somewhere along the road, I’m actually making a difference. People who really thought they couldn’t get help and couldn’t get through a certain situation can turn to us.

What else are you involved in in Marathon? I do all the work for the animal shelter. That’s really a passion of mine, because I love animals. Throughout the years, if police, firefighters or other first responders or military members call us and it’s something we can handle, we generally don’t charge them.

Obviously no one can do it alone. Who else would you like to thank as you accept this prestigious award? Jose Fons and Jayme Cassidy are the legal services coordinators who organize things for us all year. They’re the ones who advertise and do everything to get the clinics running down here. Judge Bonnie Helms is our point of contact down here for all pro bono services, and she actually just won the Distinguished Judicial Service Award this year. And of course my assistant Jody Freeman and my partner John Campbell.

Just for fun, we were told we need to ask about your dog. Hooper? He’s a crazy yellow lab that’s always eating something. I actually named him after the guy in “Jaws.” He’s a social media superstar, because I usually don’t post pictures of myself, just Hooper doing crazy stuff.

t was a woman’s world in Key West last week, as the annual International Women’s Flag Football Association held its annual Kelly McGills Classic from Jan. 24-31.

Hundreds of women and girls from more than 30 teams around the country and the globe once again converged on Key West for a week of competition, camaraderie and a good bit of carousing downtown.

Created by Stock Island resident Diane Beruldsen more than 20 years ago, the league’s mission “is to provide an opportunity for all females regardless of race, nationality, age, skill level, economic status or sexual orientation to enjoy healthy competition, have fun and develop teamwork skills.”

“Our goal is to educate and assist our players through our tournaments, clinics, and promotional tours while building self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills,” says Beruldsen, who has traveled to Europe, Scandinavia and Central America to promote and teach the sport.

Games took place in Key West and on Stock Island and included more than a dozen youth teams of local players from Marathon, Sugarloaf and Key West.

In addition to the daily flag football games, the event includes evening activities, speakers and clinics for coaches and officials.

“Sandy” Cornish escapes slavery to become farmer in Key West

T

he Florida Keys are a storied string of islands with tremendous history. Some of those stories are told repeatedly, like when Henry Flagler brought the Key West Extension of his Florida East Coast Railway to its southernmost terminus.

Other stories of historical importance connected to the Florida Keys are told, but not very loudly and not often enough. The story of Andrew “Sandy” Cornish falls into this category of stories that are not told loudly enough or repeated as often as they should be for what they reveal about the human spirit.

Cornish was born in Maryland, into slavery, in 1793. While there is little insight into his early life, specific details have found their way into the historical record. While still an enslaved person, his owner hired him out to work on a railroad project in Florida. He likely worked for the Tallahassee Railroad, one of the two oldest railroads in Florida. The company was incorporated in 1834. Work on the line would begin the same year and would reach Port Leon, Florida, on the St. Marks River in Wakulla County, in 1839.

Port Leon was destroyed by a hurricane in 1843 and is today an extinct town.

In this instance, Cornish was able to earn money for his own labor, too, and made a reported $600 per year.

With that, the story suggests that over nine years, he was able to save up enough money to purchase, from his owner, emancipation papers for himself and his wife, Lillah. The cost has been stated as $3,000 in some accounts and $3,200 in others. As his early story is summed up in sometimes graphic detail, those precious papers were destroyed in a house fire.

As a result, Cornish could not prove his free status, and subsequently, a group of slave traders captured him to take him to New Orleans. Fortunately, he escaped his captors and, to remain a free man, Cornish took extraordinary steps. Where this event took place is up for debate. Some say it occurred in the river port town of Port Leon, Florida, and others report the gruesome scene was acted out in Louisiana. In every story, he declared that he would never again be another man’s property. He proceeded to make his body undesirable for the slave

trade to ensure that fact.

In full view of the crowd assembled, Cornish stabbed himself in the leg, slashed a muscle in his ankle, and cut off one of the fingers on his left BRAD hand. Andrew “Sandy” Cornish and Lillah would eventually make their way to Key West in the late 1840s. Circa 1850, they bought a farm in the area of present-day Truman Avenue and Simonton Street.

They grew fruits and vegetables on the farm that were sold to locals, soldiers and Key West markets. The Cornish farm is said to have been the island’s first successful farm, and Sandy, as those around him knew him, grew to become one of the richest men on the island. He also became one of Key West’s civic and spiritual leaders.

In 1864, the future parishioners of what became the Cornish Chapel of the African Methodist Episcopal Church began to meet under the shade of a Spanish lime tree. That same year, Rev. Wilbur Garrison Strong of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Hartford, Connecticut, came to Key West to serve the growing congregation. Strong is considered to be the first black ordained minister in Florida.

Cornish died in 1869 and would never see the church that bears his name. The Cornish Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, at 702 Whitehead Street, was built by its parishioners in 1885. It became the first church organized by and for the island’s black community. When completed, it served as a place of worship, a school and a place of retreat when a safe place was needed.

Cornish was buried at the Key West Cemetery. Over the years, the marker that had been placed to honor him disappeared, and the location of his body was lost. It took time, but in 2014 a plaque was installed at the cemetery to honor his memory. His likeness can be found at the Mallory Square Sculpture Garden, as his is one of the busts of those men and women who have played significant roles in Key West’s remarkable history.

HOLLERING DOWN THE RAIN BARREL FROM THE CATBIRD’S SEAT

I

t is hard to know what to say about a gray catbird, which might be the point. They seem to aim for inscrutability.

Most English speakers hear the bird’s name ... is a photograand think of the well-worn phrase, “In the catbird’s pher, writer, and semi-professional seat,” which is often credited to James Thurber, birdwatcher. He who in 1942 published a short story in the New has lived in Key Yorker, an interoffice revenge fantasy called “In The West for more than 25 years and Catbird’s Seat.” It’s a throwaway phrase, uttered by the story’s villainess in a long stream of other may no longer be employable in apparently trendy-at-the-time business clichés, the real world. The phrase tends to denote a superior position, elevated, advantaged, engaged but above the fray. Which doesn’t really pass the smell test when it comes to ornithological accuracy.

The closely related northern mockingbird tends to view the world from a lofty advantage, but catbirds largely keep things on the downlow, lurking in the bushes, moving around in the background.

Their Latin name is Dumetella carolinensis, with dumetella meaning “little one of the thicket.” They tend to function like back-office bureaucrats who have advanced career-wise beyond having to engage with the public. They don’t avoid being seen, they just apparently don’t see the advantage of it.

This impression is enhanced by their plumage, which is pretty much a uniform Politburo gray, except for a black cap and a mostly black tail. They do have a lovely burgundy crissum, which is the underpart of the rump, or what would be the catbird’s seat if catbirds sat like humans. But it’s hard to see that color, as catbirds are generally too close to the ground and way low in your sightline. Nothing else really catches the eye, other than their seeming sleek fastidiousness.

Adding to this, gray catbirds all look alike. Young, old, male, female – those traits may be readily apparent to other catbirds, but there’s no visible difference that humans can grasp.

I was sitting on the porch last fall, late in the migration, when I watched a series of eight or 10 catbirds move one at a time through the seagrape in front of me. It was like watching an actor doing multiple takes of the same scene. Or maybe one of those scenes from “The Matrix” where the bad guys just keep replicating. Most of those birds no doubt continued migrating south, but we still have a very healthy number of them. I’m pretty sure there are two or three catbirds on most blocks in Key West all winter long.

All this genetic craving for anonymity is kind of belied by one thing – the noises they make.

Years ago I had a surreal dream where I was riding this kind of land-based three-masted frigate that roamed these red rock canyonlands on a set of outsized tractor treads. And somehow in this dream I was in the captain’s quarters and on a table near the well-stocked bookshelf was the captain’s pet bird, which was something called a dog-faced hawk. It looked like a normal hawk, except for the head, which looked like something from a doleful basset hound. And if you’d never seen one, or a picture of one, I suppose the name catbird could evoke the feline equivalent of that – whiskers, pointy ears, sandpaper tongue, disdainful attitude. But no.

The name catbird comes from their call, which every species account and field guide describes as “mewing.” It’s a short, harsh rasp – plaintive and bored-sounding, like a housecat begging for food out of habit after they’ve just eaten.

I’ve been hearing that call since late September. I probably heard it 20 times this afternoon, while working on this column. It’s not the kind of thing anyone writes poetry about – or at least no poetry I’ve been able to find.

Their call, though, is not easily confused with their song, which is where catbirds shed their seeming interchangeability. They are one of the more vocally dextrous birds, with the rare ability to sing from both sides of their syrinx – the avian equivalent of our larynx – independently. Which means they are capable of singing with two voices at the same time. Their song tends to be arrhythmic and complex, full of smooth sweet notes, with the occasional mew thrown in like a DJ scratch. Syllables are often repeated in the same song, but not in the same order. One catbird in Michigan was recorded uttering 170 different syllables in under five minutes.

Living here in Florida, where they do not breed, we don’t get to hear this full-throated song. But we do get to hear the rehearsals.

Catbirds are the only birds I ever heard that practice. They haven’t started doing it yet, but in the next month or so they will.

And they will do it for weeks on end before they head north. It’ll come across as whispered, mumbling and soft, not fully voiced or articulated. Like a teenager working up the courage to ask out a date in the bathroom mirror, not wanting anyone else to hear and make fun of them.

You have to catch them at it and you have to listen for it, but it will be there. It will slip into your psyche if you let it. And it makes you hope that, whenever they do decide to head north, they will have an easy trip, find a mate and have a good summer tearing up the pea patch.

LET’S MAKE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER Keys middle and high schools join forces for one incredible concert

W

hat happens when you put talented school-age musicians from around the Keys together, put them under the direction of a talented clinician and give them one working day to stage a concert? You get the Monroe All-County Band Concert!

Last Saturday, those talented school-age musicians came to Marathon from all the middle and high schools and blew the doors off the Marathon Middle/High School auditorium. These musicians did a fine job representing their individual schools: Sugarloaf School, Horace O’Bryant, Plantation Key School, Key Largo School, Sigsbee Charter, Coral Shores High, Key West High and Marathon Middle/High School.

The middle school clinician was Rich Ervin, a musician with Walt Disney World and a bassoonist with the Bach Festival Society Orchestra in Winter Park. He has worked with more than 1,600 bands from around the world.

Ervin is also the bassoon instructor for Rollins College.

The high school clinician was Dave Schrier, assistant director of bands at UCF, as well as assistant director and principal conductor for the UCF Concert Band. He is a sought-after clinician and instructor, having plied his talents all over America and around the world.

How they stage this concert so quickly is amazing. The clinicians meet with their bands, many of which have never played together — and they’ve never rehearsed the pieces they’re going to play. The clinician works with the bands and their directors to basically create something beautiful out of the controlled chaos of a school band.

One long nine-hour day of rehearsal prepares them to perform a selection of varied and complex pieces.

Although I’m sure there were some cases of nerves, the students were poised and acted professionally as their clinician conductors raised their batons and led them down the road through their chosen compositions. I wasn’t sure what to expect — but I really didn’t expect the level of musicianship and composure I saw coming off that stage. The musicians worked as a team, each one sure of their own parts as they came together and made beautiful music.

It’s really good to see that the Monroe County School District has such a good music program. Music education is an important part of a student’s overall education. As it has been said, “Music helps develop the student behind the (test) score.” Music enhances students’ abilities and skills in creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. In these strange and stupid days where arts education funding is threatened every budget cycle, it’s a good thing to show our support of a robust music and arts education system here in the Keys.

Most of the music I play is either solo or in a small group. That’s why it’s always such a treat to hear a large ensemble all work together, in unison and harmony, and create a joyful noise.

Music is meant to be played and enjoyed live. A concert can’t exist without musicians and an audience — it’s a shared event where both come together and create an experience both beautiful and ephemeral. Unlike a painting or a sculpture, music only exists at the time it’s being performed and experienced.

In these strange and stupid days, when music has become a commodity, a noise relegated to the background of our lives, it’s really good to dedicate the time to appreciate good live music. Special thanks to my Take Stock student and Marathon High band musician, Dakota Mertyris, for inviting us to see this fabulous show. Support the arts and support live music of all genres. It truly does soothe the savage breast.

The varsity baseball season has officially begun The 17 varsity players have already demonstrated their preseason skills by attending several hitting and throwing practices on the field. This past week the team even began their “5 a.m. wake-up call,” an early morning lift with the entire team before school even begins. “We refuse to be outworked, period,” said coach Joey Gonzalez.

When asked what sets this team apart from others, Gonzalez said, “It’s the chemistry we have as a group that makes us so strong. It is a brotherhood out there. Several of these guys have played next to each other for almost seven years. Mistakes are made because we are all human, but instead of getting down, we pick each other up, try harder, and do better the next time around.”

This season will feature about 30 games. There will be two preseason games and two postseason games. “Our end goal is to make it to the conference championship,” said Gonzalez. “We have the right pieces. We have 17 fully dedicated and committed players working towards our goal. We are looking to bring home a title this year.”

The team is ready to put the time in to achieve this goal. They will hold three of the 5 a.m. practices per week and five after-school practices from 2:45 to 5 p.m. The team frequently works as a group, but each player has individual focuses. The group makes it a point to come together as a team and finish off each practice with 30 minutes of conditioning.

“Everyone understands the mission at hand. There is not a single guy that is not working towards that goal,” said Gonzalez. The first home games of the 2022 season are on Friday, Feb. 18 at 3 and 6 p.m. against Palmer Trinity.

YASMARY SANTOS 12th Grade Girls Weightlifting Yasmary Santos, a senior at Marathon, has been on the girls weightlifting team since her freshman year. She was recruited by head coach Jessie Schubert and by several of her friends on the team.

After her first week of practice, she fell in love with the sport. “Being on the weightlifting team is like an escape for me,” said Santos. “While I’m in the weight room or at a meet, it feels as though I can’t be stopped.”

In addition to her literal strength, Santos believes that her strengths shine brightest while helping others on the team. She uses the experience and knowledge she has acquired since joining the team three years ago.

Yasmary is known for her ability to care for everyone. “She is the team mom,” said a close friend of Santos.

“She is always prepared. She has snacks, first aid and extra supplies. If anyone needs anything, they know to go to her first because she is always ready for everything.”

These skills also make Santos an excellent team manager. She has assisted in managing team sports at the high school for years. This year she was the varsity boys soccer team manager, and was avid about attending all games and several practices throughout the season. She became responsible for a variety of team tasks, including one of the most important jobs on any team: recording the stats.

Because Yasmary has so many significant responsibilities, she has developed a variety of characteristics that set her apart from others. She is extremely hardworking and dedicated to becoming the best she can be. “My form has improved a lot this past season,” said Santos. “Because of this, my total weights have skyrocketed for both the bench press and clean and jerk.”

Santos finished off her senior season by placing 5th in the girls’ regional weightlifting competition with a total weight of 270 pounds.

Yasmary is still undecided as to where she will attend college in the fall.

She is fairly certain that she will study kinesiology with hopes of becoming a personal trainer.

n Jan. 26, island rivals clashed as Key West traveled to Marathon to take on the Dolphins in girls basketball. Marathon refused to spoil the celebration for senior Molly Prince, who signed a letter of intent with Siena Heights University before the game, taking home a 65-54 win. “Abrianna Marshall played phenomenal, Elena Eubank had one of her best games and Marti’Yana Kilbourne hustled the whole time,” said head coach Andre Garvey. “Overall, the team stepped up and gave it their best and played as one.
