SWEET & ‘STIMULATING,’ COFFEE BUTLER DIES AT 93 KEY WEST’S MUSIC MAN RECORDED FINAL ALBUM AT AGE 90 MANDY MILES
mandy@keysweekly.com
F
orget Don McLean’s “American Pie.” Feb. 1, 2022 was the day the music died in Key West, when the island’s beloved Lofton “Coffee” Butler died at the age of 93, becoming forever etched in Key West’s heart and history. He got the nickname when a friend mispronounced “Loffy” as Coffee and the name stuck. Later, when Butler was playing regular gigs at the former Hukilau Polynesian restaurant on North Roosevelt Boulevard, the owners decided that story had to be embellished. From then on, Coffee’s nickname was because “he was so stimulating,” Ralph DePalma writes in his book “Soul of Key West” that details Key West’s music scene and the musicians who make it what it is. “I’d been trying to prepare myself for the day this news came, but there’s no way to do it,” DePalma told the Keys Weekly on Feb. 2 after learning the night before that Butler had died around 9:30 p.m. in Miami, where he had been living with his son and grandchildren for the past few months. “There are no words to describe the deep sadness felt today all over Key West. Our legend has passed. Lofton Ambrose Butler, more affectionately known as Coffee Butler, has peacefully passed away surrounded by his family and his loving son Dennis. A Coffee Butler performance was a treasure to cherish forever and knowing the man himself was indeed an honor. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Key West’s beloved music man, Lofton ‘Coffee’ Butler, died Tuesday, Feb. 1 at age 93. RALPH DePALMA/Contributed
DePalma and others found comfort in the thought that Butler was finally reunited with the love of his life, his wife of more than 60 years, Martha, who died in 2011. “When Martha died, Coffee literally cried his eyes out,” DePalma said. “Honestly, he had to see a doctor in Miami for a blocked tear duct. So at least they’re together again.” Fortunately, Key West didn’t wait to honor the musical legend posthumously with a musical venue bearing his name. The short man with a larger-than-life sparkle was 91 and smiling broadly to friends and relatives in June 2020, when his fingers danced lightly over an electronic keyboard at the dedication of the city’s new Coffee Butler Amphitheater at Truman Waterfront Park. At that dedication, Butler played for the crowd, but kept glancing shyly at the gleaming white sign that stands taller than the man himself. But his first love was baseball, DePalma writes in his book. “He was an outstanding shortstop and revered Jackie Robinson,” De Palma writes. “After graduating in 1948, he tried out with the Negro League’s Kansas City Monarchs. Eventually, he played in the Florida/ Cuba League for the Palm Beach

Rockets, traveling between Miami, Tampa and Cuba in 1950 and 1951.” In 1952, he was drafted by the U.S. Army rather than another baseball team. He would return to Key West and play music at the Hukilau and other venues around town. Playwright Tennessee Williams shared his piano bench, along with Tallulah Bankhead. Butler also played a set with the Beatles when a hurricane rerouted them to Key West in 1964, De Palma writes. If Heaven has a piano, Coffee Butler is doing his thing, tickling the ivories with a mischievous grin and singing, “Who put the pepper in the Vaseline?”

SHIPS, BOATS, ROADS AND SPORTS QUICK COMMISSION MEETING TOUCHES ON SEVERAL TOPICS MANDY MILES mandy@keysweekly.com
K
ey West lawmakers on Tuesday unanimously approved an unbudgeted $53,600 increase for youth athletic leagues, which was recommended by the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board but opposed by the city manager and finance director, who had recommended the increase wait until the next fiscal year’s budget process. The Parks and Recreation had voted to do just that, wait, at its September 2021 meeting because the PAR board had been unable to meet in June, July and August during the budget process due to a lack of a quorum. (It also canceled its recent January 2022 meeting for the same reason.) But in mid-January, Mayor Teri Johnston forwarded the PAR board’s funding request to City Manager Patti McLauchlin anyway, asking that it be implemented in the current budget. But what about the cruise ships? City Attorney Shawn Smith reminded commissioners that the cruise ship summit scheduled for Feb. 3 had been canceled because the draft ordinances enacting the new cruise ship limits were not ready and commissioners want the public to have ample time to review them before the meeting. “We’d like to include the first reading of those ordinances at the commission’s Feb. 15 meeting to give the public seven days to review the proposed ordinance,” Smith said. Johnston said she’d rather schedule a special meeting “if we can do it earlier.” The timing of that meeting remains to be seen. In other commission news, Key West officials are closely watching bills in Tallahassee that would regulate liveaboard boaters and provide additional managed moorings in the waters surrounding Key West.
“House Bill 1026 would provide 250 more moorings, although other bills would reduce that number to 100 moorings,” Doug Bradshaw, the city’s ports and marine services director, told the city commission on Feb. 1. “So we’re trying to look at our actual number of liveaboard residents who are not currently on a mooring to determine how many additional ones we’ll need.” “I believe there’s probably an average of about 200 liveaboards. So 100 new moorings would be a little low, but 250 may be too many.” Bradshaw reminded the commissioners that “some people will simply never live on a mooring because there’s a monthly cost associated with it.” There’s also a cost associated with road construction projects and road closures that have left several downtown business owners frustrated for as long as six months. “I’m sure my colleagues and I have all received the same complaints from businesses,” Commissioner Sam Kaufman said at Tuesday’s meeting, asking McLauchlin, “Is there a way to better inform the public about time frames of road projects and about who’s doing the project, because often it’s not a city project, but the county or the aqueduct authority.” McLauchlin assured the commissioners, “We can do better sending out press releases. I know it’s a source of frustration. We’re encouraging and allowing businesses to put out signs saying they’re still open during the construction. I’ll continue to walk downtown, talk to them and see what we can do to ease the pain.” Kaufman also suggested the city work with the county, state and utilities “and encourage them to do these projects in the off season rather than in the peak of tourist season.”

n athlete, an author and a reality star walk into a bar… It sounds like the start of a joke, but it actually happened on Jan. 30 at Key West’s Southernmost Mansion. Talent representative Bill Francis of The Nova Group, who lives in Key West and Tampa, emailed me the day before with an interesting invitation. He said he had Major League Baseball pitching legend Tommy John, “along with the world’s most famous houseguest, Kato Kaelin, and novelist Alessandra Torre all getting together at the Seaside Cafe at the Mansion, 1400 Duval St. “It’s a very eclectic group and an interesting combo,” Francis wrote. And it was. Kaelin was planning to emcee a show that night at Comedy Key West, and Tommy John (no relation to the men’s underwear brand) was here with his wife, Cheryl, and their two sweet dogs, “Arnold Palmer” and “Jack Nicklaus.” Kaelin became a household name in 1995, when he testified at O.J. Simpson’s murder trial as the resident of a guesthouse on the Simpsons’ property. He has since had several acting and reality show gigs. John pitched for 26 seasons in the major leagues and played for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, and Oakland Athletics. The now-common orthopedic procedure is known as “Tommy John surgery.” Now 78, John “was a four-time MLB All-Star and has the third-most wins (288) of any pitcher since 1900 not in the Hall of Fame. Known for his longevity, John was the Opening Day starter for both the 1966 Chicago White Sox and the 1989 New York Yankees,” states his Wikipedia bio. Torre is a New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of 23 novels, including multiple New York Times bestsellers. She is now a Key West resident. ook out, Grammys, there’s a new award show in town. The first-ever Key West Music Awards, known as the Iggys, packed the house on Jan. 30 at the Key West Theater. Conceived and created by locals Ray West and Ben Solove, the awards are meant to “celebrate the hard-working musicians, songwriters, producers, facilitators and others who make the music scene here one of the best in the country,” said Solove, who is also the Keys Weekly’s twice-monthly music columnist. “Ray West and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how well the event turned out. It was a sold-out show. The live performances were fantastic. The reception from those in attendance was phenomenal. We’re already excited about next year’s event. Thanks to all of our sponsors, the Key West Theater crew, and so many others who helped us pull off a wonderful event. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. And, we’re honored to have had Sister Season Fund as the beneficiary of the event.”

TRUE GRIT TEEN JAYDEN FERRELL IS THE DEFINITION OF PERSEVERANCE CHARLOTTE TWINE www.keysweekly.com
O
n Jan. 25, when 16-year-old Jayden Ferrell was presented with a GEMS (Great Education Moments for Students) award by the Monroe County School District at its board meeting, many of his family members attended to watch. As Superintendent Theresa Axford handed over the award, his family stood and, smiling broadly, took photos with their phones as his mother, Sophia Baker, jumped into the group who were posing around Jayden. While introducing 11th-grade Coral Shores High School student Jayden, Amber Archer Acevedo, the coordinator of community relations for the district, said, “Jayden is the true demonstration of perseverance and grit. Jayden was born blind, and he uses braille and braille technology with his advanced placement and academic classes, as well as in his personal life. Jayden has faced many challenges, physically, emotionally and personally. But he never lets that stop him. … He has goals, and we have no doubt he has what it takes to get there.” Jayden was kind enough to answer some questions from the Keys Weekly: Jayden, how do you do homework in braille? When I hand in homework, it’s written in braille, then it’s printed out in print. A special computer does that. I have it with me. I bring it to school and take it home. What extra school activities are you involved in? Drama Club and Mock Trial. Mock Trial is for people who want to go into law. We go over cases and go to competitions. I like it, it’s fun.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I like arguing, and I like being right. And I like being paid for it, so I’d like to be a lawyer for my career. Who do you credit for helping you succeed in school? I guess my parents. My mom was always really supportive and encouraging and made sure education was important. My dad helped me get through middle school. I probably would have failed middle school if not for my parents. They were hard years. Teenage life is hard. Those years, I really didn’t know who I was yet. I did a lot of dumb things. I wasn’t motivated to do any work. My father started teaching me braille early, when I was 2. What would you say to other children of color who are having problems and aren’t motivated in school? That’s a hard question. I guess, figure out who you are early in life so you won’t have to deal with it in the future. It was a mental journey I went through. A lot of my family would tell me things, family advice. After they were done, I’d store it away and see how I felt about it. If I liked it, I kept it. If I didn’t, I’d turn it around to something I like. How can white people support people of color? I don’t know how to answer that. Maybe less stereotypes. What superpower would you most like to have, and why? Teleportation. Because why not? It would make life a lot easier. Either that, or clone myself so one of me could go to school while the other one could sleep.
If you could make a rule for the whole world to follow, what would it be? Make the weekends longer. School should be three days, and weekends should be four days. The economy would rise. Thursday to Sunday, everyone would get involved in stuff. The plan can’t go wrong. What makes you laugh? Not much. I like sitcoms and stuff. They make me laugh. The last one I saw was “My Wife and Kids.” I guess I just know how to make other people laugh. Finish this sentence: The hardest part about being a kid is… Living up to parents’ expectations. But when you get to a certain age, you question if you want to live to their expectations or go higher than that. When I was 10, 11, 12, I realized I wanted to be better than this. I don’t want to stay in the Keys the rest of my life. I want to live my life to the fullest and have opportunities they never had. Jayden, what else would you like to tell the readers of this newspaper? Sleep more.

WEINERPALOOZA 2022 A SHORT PARADE FOR SHORT LEGS
K
ey West’s annual Dachshund Parade got a new name this year — Weinerpalooza. Organized by Ben Hennington, of the Sunset Social Drinking Club, and proud owner of a dachshund named Alvin, whom Hennington calls, “King of the Lowriders,” the event raises money for local animals in need. The parade is as short as its participants’ legs — only 2½ blocks
from the Custom House to Greene Street. Wiener dog wannabes of all shapes and sizes are always welcome to participate. There were dogs dressed as hot dogs, in tuxedos, as mermaids and in other costumes. Despite the chill in the air on Jan. 29, the event drew more than 100 dogs and their humans. — Mandy Miles

ypically we reserve our Top 10 for humorous anecdotes and passive-aggressive digs. But this week, during an initial attempt to poke some fun at Groundhog Day and how no one in the Keys gives a $h!t about winter, our team of humorists embraced their ADHD and digressed into an intense debate on which Bill Murray movies are the actor’s best. Now, for those struggling to follow our derailed train of thought, Bill Murray was the star of the cult classic movie, “Groundhog Day,” which sparked our debate. Then we ran out of time to write anything funny about the silly “holiday,” so we decided, what the hell, let’s just do our Top 10 Bill Murray movies. Think this sounds easy? We dare you to check out the body of Murray’s work over the past six (yes, six) decades and try to rank your top 10. Here are our...

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
This week, we offer you a Showtime series with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, a way to get a music fix that runs the gamut of artists and musical styles, and a memoir of a life on the road.
BEST BILL MURRAY MOVIES OF ALLTIME 10. “Meatballs” (1979, R): It was a coming-of-age film for Murray. And for many others who grew up in the ‘80s. 9. “What About Bob?” (1991, PG): Who knew the chemistry between Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss could be so good? “What About Bob?” is one of the most unexpected masterpieces of the 90’s. 8. “Stripes” (1981, R): With all due respect to contemporary comedies, “Stripes” has never been replicated. And never will be. 7. “Groundhog Day” (1993, PG): This could arguably be Murray’s best work and is most likely a film we all stop to watch anytime it is on. 6. “Rushmore” (1998, R): Another Wes Anderson classic that redefined the genius and range of Bill Murray. 5. “Kingpin” (1996, PG-13): You either get it or you don’t. But if you do, you’re probably cooler than your co-workers. 4. “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” (2004, R): We love all of Murray’s Wes Anderson movies, but nothing compares to the cast and genius of this one.
3. “Ghostbusters” (1984, PG): When going to the movies was an event, this was the type of film that lived up to the hype. With all due respect to reboots and remakes, nothing compares to the original classic. 2. “Caddyshack” (1980, R): Several generations can quote every line from this movie, particularly the musings of Carl Spackler. And it’s the type of film, 42 years later, that still stands the test of time. 1. “Lost in Translation” (2003, R): Simply put, it’s one of the greatest films ever made. Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, it was the moment we all became cognizant of Murray’s undeniable range and immortality. Honorable Mentions: “Scrooged,” “The Jungle Book,” “Where the Buffalo Roam,” “Ed Wood,” “St. Vincent,” “Zombieland” and every other Wes Anderson film not listed here — “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Isle of Dogs” and “The Darjeeling Limited” are all cinematic gold.
WATCH | YELLOWJACKETS Yes, apparently ”’Yellowjackets’ withdrawal” is a thing, at least according to website Collider.com. “Yellowjackets” is a 10-episode series on Showtime, and it is a certifiable smash hit. The show’s rating is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has already been renewed for a second season. “Yellowjackets” tells the story of a girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes in the wilderness and how their behavior degenerates into ruthlessness in order to survive for 19 months. The episodes also flash forward to reveal how they are piecing together their lives 25 years later. Consider us intrigued. Stream on Showtime. LISTEN | BROKEN RECORD Ever wonder what a musician was thinking when his or her career caught fire? How a song or an album was put together? Which comes first, the lyrics or the melody? Give a listen to Broken Record, for interviews of people you’ve heard of and people you’d never otherwise learn about. Hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam. Wherever you get your podcasts. READ | I CAME ALL THIS WAY TO MEET YOU A brilliant, funny memoir of transformation, the “master of modern fiction” known as Jami Attenberg reveals the defining moments that pushed her to create a life and voice she could claim for herself. As the daughter of a traveling Midwest salesman, Attenberg was drawn to a life on the road. Frustrated by quotidian jobs and hungry for inspiration and fresh experiences, her wanderlust led her across the country and eventually on travels around the globe. Through it all, she grapples with questions of morality, otherworldliness and what we leave behind.

A gray catbird making a foray out into the open. MARK HEDDEN/Keys Weekly
HOLLERING DOWN THE RAIN BARREL FROM THE CATBIRD’S SEAT
I
t is hard to know what to say about a gray catbird, which might be the point. They seem to aim for inscrutability. Most English speakers hear the bird’s name ... is a photograand think of the well-worn phrase, “In the catbird’s pher, writer, and semi-professional seat,” which is often credited to James Thurber, birdwatcher. He who in 1942 published a short story in the New has lived in Key Yorker, an interoffice revenge fantasy called “In The West for more than 25 years and Catbird’s Seat.” It’s a throwaway phrase, uttered by the story’s villainess in a long stream of other may no longer be employable in apparently trendy-at-the-time business clichés, the real world. He such as “hollering down the rain barrel.” But I’m is also executive never sure why Thurber gets credit for it, as within director of the Florida Keys Audu- the story he cites it as a catchphrase of Red Barber, the Brooklyn Dodgers’ announcer. And the realbon Society. world Red Barber said it was just a phrase he heard somewhere down south. The phrase tends to denote a superior position, elevated, advantaged, engaged but above the fray. Which doesn’t really pass the smell test when it comes to ornithological accuracy. The closely related northern mockingbird tends to view the world from a lofty advantage, but catbirds largely keep things on the downlow, lurking in the bushes, moving around in the background. Their Latin name is Dumetella carolinensis, with dumetella meaning “little one of the thicket.” They tend to function like back-office bureaucrats who have advanced career-wise beyond having to engage with the public. They don’t avoid being seen, they just apparently don’t see the advantage of it. This impression is enhanced by their plumage, which is pretty much a uniform Politburo gray, except for a black cap and a mostly black tail. They do have a lovely burgundy crissum, which is the underpart of the rump, or what would be the catbird’s seat if catbirds sat like humans. But it’s hard to see that color, as catbirds are generally too close to the ground and way low in your sightline. Nothing else really catches the eye, other than their seeming sleek fastidiousness. Adding to this, gray catbirds all look alike. Young, old, male, female – those traits may be readily apparent to other catbirds, but there’s no visible difference that humans can grasp. I was sitting on the porch last fall, late in the migration, when I watched a series of eight or 10 catbirds move one at a time through the seagrape in front of me. It was like watching an actor doing multiple takes of the same scene. Or maybe one of those scenes from “The Matrix” where the bad guys just keep replicating. Most of those birds no doubt continued migrating south, but we still have a very healthy number of them. I’m pretty sure there are two or three catbirds on most blocks in Key West all winter long. All this genetic craving for anonymity is kind of belied by one thing – the noises they make.
MARK HEDDEN
Years ago I had a surreal dream where I was riding this kind of land-based three-masted frigate that roamed these red rock canyonlands on a set of outsized tractor treads. And somehow in this dream I was in the captain’s quarters and on a table near the well-stocked bookshelf was the captain’s pet bird, which was something called a dog-faced hawk. It looked like a normal hawk, except for the head, which looked like something from a doleful basset hound. And if you’d never seen one, or a picture of one, I suppose the name catbird could evoke the feline equivalent of that – whiskers, pointy ears, sandpaper tongue, disdainful attitude. But no. The name catbird comes from their call, which every species account and field guide describes as “mewing.” It’s a short, harsh rasp – plaintive and bored-sounding, like a housecat begging for food out of habit after they’ve just eaten. I’ve been hearing that call since late September. I probably heard it 20 times this afternoon, while working on this column. It’s not the kind of thing anyone writes poetry about – or at least no poetry I’ve been able to find. Their call, though, is not easily confused with their song, which is where catbirds shed their seeming interchangeability. They are one of the more vocally dextrous birds, with the rare ability to sing from both sides of their syrinx – the avian equivalent of our larynx – independently. Which means they are capable of singing with two voices at the same time. Their song tends to be arrhythmic and complex, full of smooth sweet notes, with the occasional mew thrown in like a DJ scratch. Syllables are often repeated in the same song, but not in the same order. One catbird in Michigan was recorded uttering 170 different syllables in under five minutes. Living here in Florida, where they do not breed, we don’t get to hear this full-throated song. But we do get to hear the rehearsals. Catbirds are the only birds I ever heard that practice. They haven’t started doing it yet, but in the next month or so they will. And they will do it for weeks on end before they head north. It’ll come across as whispered, mumbling and soft, not fully voiced or articulated. Like a teenager working up the courage to ask out a date in the bathroom mirror, not wanting anyone else to hear and make fun of them. You have to catch them at it and you have to listen for it, but it will be there. It will slip into your psyche if you let it. And it makes you hope that, whenever they do decide to head north, they will have an easy trip, find a mate and have a good summer tearing up the pea patch.

T
alk about a celebration of life. The annual Crooks Second Line Parade, which occurred Jan. 30, takes its cue from New Orleans-style funeral processions and honors the lives of people loved and lost with a rousing musical march down Duval Street. Named for legendary drummer Richard Crooks, the Key West event raises money for the Bahama Village Music Program, which provides free music education for kids, and is Crooks’ legacy to the island. Several hundred participants carry large photos of lost loved ones, while dancing down the street from the Hog’s Breath Saloon to the Green Parrot. — Mandy Miles

FLORIDA KEYS TABLE FOOD, DRINKS & PEOPLE
T
he Florida Keys boast some of the most iconic eateries and bars in the world. Creative culinary minds elevate local seafood to new levels and celebrate contemporary fusion, Cuban, Caribbean, Asian, French and other international influences. Our chain of islands is one of the world’s top food and drink destinations. But our magnetic appeal goes beyond the
menu. The skilled professionals who define our local hospitality industry do much more than mix creative cocktails and serve delicious meals. These hard-working men and women are ambassadors, social directors, travel advisors and unlicensed — but often effective — therapists. To celebrate our unique culinary culture, Keys Weekly brings you this bi-weekly feature
to highlight the food, libations and local personalities that define our “must-try” destinations across the Florida Keys. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a fifth-generation local, your options are endless. Indulge in something new or revisit a familiar favorite. And above all, support the local owners and loyal employees who are vital to our Keys communities.
KEYS BITE NACHOS Keys Bite, Key Largo Every bit is packed when ordering these nachos at Keys Bite at MM 99 in the median in Key Largo. With your choice of chicken or ground beef, this nacho platter comes stacked with jalapenos, pico de gallo, lettuce and shredded cheese, as well as a side of sour cream. It’s a solid appetizer option for lunch or dinner that’s worth sharing with a few people, so you don’t get full by the time your entree comes out. LIMEADE AND MEXICAN COKE La Isla Taco Grill food truck, Marathon Yes, we know these aren’t typical cocktails. Food truck La Isla Taco Grill does not sell booze. But chef/manager Oscar Solis said that these are the two most requested drinks, perfect to wash down his tacos with the homemade spicy red sauce. And everyone knows that Mexican Coke is better than the American one, right? And if you are in the mood for a margarita, a tiki bar is steps away.
JOAN KONGOS Ramshead Southernmost, Key West Joan Konjos is a native Key Wester who has worked behind the bar at Ramshead Southernmost for the past two years. She mixed one of her bloody Mary masterpieces Wednesday morning while serving one of the restaurant’s specialties, the Annapolis Benedict — a traditional eggs benedict topped with a jumbo lump crab cake and hollandaise. “I have to say, I think I make the best bloody in town,” Kongos said. “I like to see the ‘wow’ factor on people’s faces.” Ramshead Southernmost also has a wildly popular build-your-own bloody Mary bar and serves breakfast until 1 p.m. daily, along with full lunch and dinner menus.

WOMEN’S FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO KEY WEST
GRIDIRON GALS
I
t was a woman’s world in Key West last week, as the annual International Women’s Flag Football Association held its annual Kelly McGills Classic from Jan. 24-31. Hundreds of women and girls from more than 30 teams around the country and the globe once again converged on Key West for a week of competition, camaraderie and a good bit of carousing downtown. Created by Stock Island resident Diane Beruldsen more than 20 years ago, the league’s mission “is to provide an opportunity for all females regardless of race, nationality, age, skill level, economic status or sexual orientation to enjoy healthy competition, have fun and develop teamwork skills.” “Our goal is to educate and assist our players through our tournaments, clinics, and promotional tours while building self-esteem, confidence, and leadership skills,” says Beruldsen, who has traveled to Europe, Scandinavia and Central America to promote and teach the sport. Games took place in Key West and on Stock Island and included more than a dozen youth teams of local players from Marathon, Sugarloaf and Key West. In addition to the daily flag football games, the event includes evening activities, speakers and clinics for coaches and officials. — Mandy Miles

The American Red Cross Greater Miami & The Keys is proud to announce the 2022 Humanitarians of the Year
The Spottswood Family For more than a century, the Spottswood family have been standard-bearers for the American Red Cross in the Florida Keys. In 1917, as the United States entered World War I, Florence Spottswood established the first chapter of the American Red Cross in Key West. In honor of Mrs. Spottswood’s dedication to her community and to the principles of the Red Cross, the Greater Miami & The Keys chapter inaugurated the Humanitarian of the Year Gala in 1995. While the Red Cross and the Spottswood family made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Florence Spottswood Humanitarian of the Year Gala, the efforts of the Red Cross continue across our community. The Red Cross helps members of the military, veterans and their families. Volunteers are often among the first to assist after a home fire and other tragedies, natural and man-made. The Red Cross remains prepared for disasters, big and small. Thank you to the Spottswood family and the many donors who chose to support the work of the Red Cross in the absence of our annual event.

SPORTS & MORE RALPH MORROW
SUNDAY’S OVERTIME COIN TOSS DIDN’T HELP KANSAS CITY
S
unday’s loudest Kansas City ... a veteran sports crowd noise came columnist, says when the coin the only sport was flipped to start the he doesn’t follow is cricket. That overtime. leaves plenty The visiting Cincinnati of others to fill Bengals’ representative his time. chose heads. It came up ralphmoro1936 tails and, naturally, the @gmail.com Chiefs chose to receive, because everyone knows – especially Kansas City fans – that having the ball means victory. At least, it did the preceding Sunday, on Jan. 23, when K.C. won the flip and quarterback Patrick Mahomes kept the ball, going straight down the field to a winning touchdown while Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen sat on his hands, never to touch the ball again. But this time? Not so fast, Chiefs fans. Instead of a march down the field, Mahomes laid an egg, an interception by the Bengals’ Vonn Bell on the third play in OT. Cincinnati, a seven-point underdog, ran with Joe Mixson and passed from Joe Burrow from the Cincinnati 45 to the Kansas City 10. Evan McPherson was money just as he was the previous Sunday, drilling a 31-yard field goal to win the game 27-24 — and a trip to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 13. After the previous Sunday’s excitement, the Chiefs’ early 18-point lead and their favored status, I didn’t think Sunday’s games would measure up. But they did. And how. In the first half of the CincinnatiKansas City game, Mahomes was untouchable, guiding the Chiefs to a 21-3 lead with about five minutes left in the second quarter. Four minutes later, however, and with a minute left in the half, the Bengals had begun their comeback with a touchdown on a 41-yard screen pass from Burrow to Samaje Perine.
In the third period, the Bengals could not get the ball in from a first and goal from the nine. So, on fourth down, McPherson was good on a 31-yard field goal. That made it 2113. With 40 seconds left in the third quarter, the Bengals intercepted Mahomes. With 14 seconds left, a two-yard TD pass to Ja’Marr Chase and a two-point conversion pass to Tyler Boyd tied the score at 21 to start the fourth quarter. Finally, with 6:13 left, McPherson again split the uprights for a 52-yard field goal and the Bengals had their first lead, 24-21. But it wouldn’t last. With three seconds left in the game, the Chiefs tied it up on a field goal after the Bengals stopped Kansas City three times inside the 10-yard line. And that led to the overtime and Cincinnati’s victory. Waiting for the second game, I know I never received so many texts from my Dayton friends that started, “Who dey think goin’ to beat them Bengals?” And the answer, “Nobody!”
I worked the Bengals’ other two appearances in the Super Bowl, in Detroit and Miami. But I won’t be going to Los Angeles for this one. Prior to going to Miami in 1989, I suggested to my late wife, Patsy, that she find a place for us to vacation after the Super Bowl. She found Key West. Another half-dozen trips to Key West and we were hooked, crying when it was time to leave. So, we bit the bullet and moved here 29 years ago. But, I digress. In the second game Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams rallied from being down 17-7 in the fourth quarter to the San Francisco 49ers to win their own trip to the Super Bowl and play in their own stadium at about 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, where they’ll face the Bengals. After a 7-7 tie late in the second quarter, and a 54-yard field goal attempt by Rams’ Matt Gay that was wide right, Robbie Gould kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 10-7 lead at the half. That lead went up to 17-7 on a Jimmy Garoppolo pass to George Kittle with two minutes left in the third quarter. Matthew Stafford hit Cooper Kupp with a 10-yard pass to begin the fourth quarter to make it 17-14 49ers. With seven minutes left, the Rams tied it at 17 on a 40-yard field goal by Gay. With 1:46 left, Gay powered a 30-yard field goal to give the Rams a 20-17 lead that held up for the victory. And the Super Bowl matchup was made. Ho hum.

ey West local Adley Kirk has qualified for the Under Armour Junior Tour National Championship golf tournament Feb. 18-21 at Saddlebrook Golf Club in Tampa. More than 200 junior golfers from all over the country will compete in the event. Adley and her brother Teagan played the fall season of the Under Armour Junior Tour based in Orlando in 2021. The fall tour consisted of six events and the total points scored in those events were used to determine who qualifies for the National Championships. Adley finished in the top six in her age group to get an invitation to play in the Nationals in February. Teagan had very tough
competition in his age group and finished in the top 10, but was not able to qualify. Adley practices and plays at Key West Golf Club and trains with LPGA coach Kellie Edelblut at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy at Champions Gate, Florida. Being fairly new to the game with only 14 months of playing and practicing, this is Adley’s first national championship. She also loves acting and writing music on her guitar but she and her brother have an infectious passion for golf and they hope to continue pursuing a possible college career and perhaps beyond. — Contributed
or their visit to Tallahassee on Jan. 18 and 19, Monroe County Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson handed commissioners Michelle Coldiron and Holly Raschein a schedule that would have made the average person dizzy just by looking at it: The packed agenda included at least 20 meetings and two pending ones. The occasion? The county’s lobbying teams and commissioners were in the state capital for the legislative session to advocate for local issues and also to attend Legislative Day for the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) as well as for the Small County Coalition. Coldiron described the pace to Keys Weekly. “It’s fast and furious,” she said. “We got into the airport at 11, grabbed a bite of lunch, then met with (State Rep. Jim) Mooney. We were running from the House side to the Senate side to the governor’s office.” Tennyson provided a list of the issues to keep mentioning to governor’s staff, senators and representatives as they took meetings: stewardship funding for water quality projects, pump-out funding, anchoring bill, infrastructure money … and much more. Both Coldiron and Raschein emphasized that Sunshine Law issues did not come into play. The Sunshine Law decrees that meetings of government agencies and representatives — and discussions of pending local issues — shall be open to the public. “When Michelle and I are taking meetings in Tallahassee, we are there to discuss the county’s legislative agenda, which has already been publicly discussed and voted on in a BOCC meeting prior to any commissioners traveling to Tallahassee to advocate on behalf of the County,” said Raschein. The commissioners also noted that Raschein’s experience in the capital as a state representative was an asset for the meetings.
Monroe County commissioners pack in as many meetings as possible during visits to Tallahassee to advocate for issues that are important to residents. From left: Commissioner Holly Raschein, State Sen. Anna Maria Rodriguez and Commissioner Michelle Coldiron. CONTRIBUTED
“Holly still knows so many of the elected officials there,” pointed out Coldiron. “Even though we didn’t have a set meeting, she would jump into offices and I would just follow her: ‘Hey, we’re here.’ We got meetings with legislators we might not have had. I presented more as a ‘boots on the ground’ approach and her whole way was saying, ‘How much more time do you have before you vote?’ She had a different lingo. It made it really good, because we could play off of each other.” Coldiron pointed out that she is running for second vice president of the FAC, and therefore is on a path to be its president in four years. “This means that Monroe County will have a bigger presence and be in Tallahassee more often,” she said, pointing out that the goal for all 67 counties in Florida is “to protect home rule.” The issues that were most important to Raschein during this visit included “continued funding of the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, advocating on issues related to Citizens Property Insurance, and working to refine legislation related to anchoring and mooring.” But even after this whirlwind January visit, the commissioners will still have more chances to represent Monroe County’s taxpayers at the state capital. “During the state of Florida’s 60-day legislative session, we visit Tallahassee once or twice a month,” said Raschein.

M
ultiple organizations are offering rewards totaling $7,000 for information regarding the shooting of a federally protected and endangered Key deer. On the morning of Jan. 27, officers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to the scene of an injured Key deer near Crane Boulevard on Sugarloaf Key. The deer was in obvious distress, displayed a bleeding wound in its upper chest, and only had use of its hind legs. Due to the extent of its injuries, the deer was euthanized on scene and transported to a veterinarian for X-rays of its wound. Imaging revealed a fragmented projectile in the upper chest cavity, and fragments were later recovered from the lung and surrounding issues. The type of firearm used has not yet been determined. “We’ve had people harass Key deer every year, but this is the first time I’m aware of that a gun was
used to shoot a deer,” said USFWS agent David Pharo. “This was intentional.” The deer will be transported to the USFWS forensic laboratory in Ashland, Oregon, where further analysis will be conducted by forensic experts. USFWS officials are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the culprit’s conviction. In addition, a separate reward of up to $2,000 is offered by Crime Stoppers Miami and the Florida Keys along with SaveOurKeyDeer.org, according to a tweet posted by Crime Stoppers. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or leads to 786-236-2862. With a remaining population of less than 1,000 individuals, Key deer are protected by both the federal Endangered Species Act and Florida state law. Intentionally killing an animal carries a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a maximum fine of $100,000.

“Sandy” Cornish escapes slavery to become farmer in Key West
T
he Florida Keys are a storied string of islands with tremendous history. Some of those stories are told repeatedly, like when Henry Flagler brought the Key West Extension of his Florida East Coast Railway to its southernmost terminus. Other stories of historical importance connected to the Florida Keys are told, but not very loudly and not often enough. The story of Andrew “Sandy” Cornish falls into this category of stories that are not told loudly enough or repeated as often as they should be for what they reveal about the human spirit. Cornish was born in Maryland, into slavery, in 1793. While there is little insight into his early life, specific details have found their way into the historical record. While still an enslaved person, his owner hired him out to work on a railroad project in Florida. He likely worked for the Tallahassee Railroad, one of the two oldest railroads in Florida. The company was incorporated in 1834. Work on the line would begin the same year and would reach Port Leon, Florida, on the St. Marks River in Wakulla County, in 1839. Port Leon was destroyed by a hurricane in 1843 and is today an extinct town. In this instance, Cornish was able to earn money for his own labor, too, and made a reported $600 per year. With that, the story suggests that over nine years, he was able to save up enough money to purchase, from his owner, emancipation papers for himself and his wife, Lillah. The cost has been stated as $3,000 in some accounts and $3,200 in others. As his early story is summed up in sometimes graphic detail, those precious papers were destroyed in a house fire. As a result, Cornish could not prove his free status, and subsequently, a group of slave traders captured him to take him to New Orleans. Fortunately, he escaped his captors and, to remain a free man, Cornish took extraordinary steps. Where this event took place is up for debate. Some say it occurred in the river port town of Port Leon, Florida, and others report the gruesome scene was acted out in Louisiana. In every story, he declared that he would never again be another man’s property. He proceeded to make his body undesirable for the slave trade to ensure that fact.
STORY OF STRENGTH
In full view of the crowd assembled, Cornish stabbed himself in the leg, slashed a muscle in his ankle, and cut off one of the fingers on his left hand. Friends who had gathered for the BRAD event placed Cornish BERTELLI in a wheelbarrow and brought him home, is an author, speaker, and Flor- where he eventually ida Keys historian. recovered from his His latest book, self-inflicted wounds. “The Florida Keys As for the severed Skunk Ape Files,” finger, it is said he is a fun blend of two of his favorite or at least someone subjects — Florida sewed it back on with Keys history and a needle and thread. the Skunk Ape. Andrew “Sandy” Cornish and Lillah would eventually make their way to Key West in the late 1840s. Circa 1850, they bought a farm in the area of present-day Truman Avenue and Simonton Street. They grew fruits and vegetables on the farm that were sold to locals, soldiers and Key West markets. The Cornish farm is said to have been the island’s first successful farm, and Sandy, as those around him knew him, grew to become one of the richest men on the island. He also became one of Key West’s civic and spiritual leaders. In 1864, the future parishioners of what became the Cornish Chapel of the African Methodist Episcopal Church began to meet under the shade of a Spanish lime tree. That same year, Rev. Wilbur Garrison Strong of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Hartford, Connecticut, came to Key West to serve the growing congregation. Strong is considered to be the first black ordained minister in Florida. Cornish died in 1869 and would never see the church that bears his name. The Cornish Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, at 702 Whitehead Street, was built by its parishioners in 1885. It became the first church organized by and for the island’s black community. When completed, it served as a place of worship, a school and a place of retreat when a safe place was needed. Cornish was buried at the Key West Cemetery. Over the years, the marker that had been placed to honor him disappeared, and the location of his body was lost. It took time, but in 2014 a plaque was installed at the cemetery to honor his memory. His likeness can be found at the Mallory Square Sculpture Garden, as his is one of the busts of those men and women who have played significant roles in Key West’s remarkable history.
