Renovation of the two-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon is complete following its closure in 2016. In total, the 30-year restoration and maintenance plan was budgeted at $77 million, $41 million of which was spent during initial repairs. slamorada Village Manager Gregory J. Oravec has resigned just six months after he was unanimously approved by the Village Council.

The Keys Weekly obtained Oravec’s resignation letter that was dated Jan. 10 and addressed to Mayor Pete Bacheler, the village council and staff informing them of his decision to resign. In the letter, Oravec expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work with “some incredible people” and live in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

“After reflecting on the last six months and considering the year ahead, I have come to believe that the Village Council would be better served by another Village Manager. Accordingly, this letter serves to tender my resignation and inform you that my last day will be no later than March 31, 2022. Please know that I am open to negotiating alternate terms and timing,” Oravec said in the letter. “I look forward to helping you however I can during the transition and to the Village continuing its journey to realize its greater potential.”

A June 2, 2021 meeting saw council members approve the hiring of Oravec, 46. A nationwide search for Islamorada’s manager commenced following the resignation of Seth Lawless in summer 2020 due to health reasons. Maria Bassett, current finance director, took the helm on an interim basis.

Initial recruitment of candidates saw just over 80 applicants for the position.

From 12 candidates, the list of finalists for Islamorada’s next manager then narrowed to five during a May 19, 2021 special meeting of the village council. Andrea Agha, Guillermo Olmedillo, Oravec, Terry Suggs and David Baird were selected as finalists.

In his pitch to the dais, Oravec said he wanted to share his passion with a community he called a “special place” and an “incredible waterfront village.”

With a July 1 start date, Oravec’s contract provided an annual salary of $169,500 and relocation reimbursement of $13,500. He also received a housing allowance of $2,000 per month, which started during his third month of employment. Other benefits include sick leave and health care that’s the same for all village employees.

the public wastewater system, to regulating the Fills area and initiating public meetings.

Oravec had recently made several hires, including Daniel Gulizio as village planning director and Katie Atkins as public information officer and executive assistant. Oravec, in his remarks to council, apologized to the two new employees for resigning so soon after their hiring.

“But I take heart in the belief that they’ll do great things here for you and here in the village,” he said.

Islamorada Village Council approved Oravec’s resignation during a special meeting on Jan. 11.

Before accepting his resignation, Oravec told the council he lost his appetite for the political dynamics that go with the job.

“For me, they become more than just isolated moments in time. They rob the job of its joy,” he said. “Given these dynamics are playing against the backdrop of a difficult move, which has my family split between two places, I’ve come to the regrettable conclusion that I cannot muster the deep reservoir of enthusiasm and passion to serve you, this council.

“I believe time is the most valuable thing a person can spend and the thing most of us spend most of our discretionary time on is at work. Given the preciousness of this time, we should not just be satisfied with our work, we should never really think of it as a ‘grind,’” he continued. “We owe it to ourselves, those we love and those we serve to actively enjoy it and, dare I say, love it.”

It’s unknown who will take over as acting village manager as the dais will again embark on another search. Maria Bassett, finance director and deputy village manager, served as acting village manager from the time of Lawless’ resignation to the hiring of Oravec.

Mayor Pete Bacheler thanked Oravec for his service.

COUNTY MOVES TO SETTLE SHARE IN $26.5 BILLION OPIOID LAWSUIT CASE WITH PURDUE PHARMA/ SACKLER FAMILY STILL PENDING

M

onroe County has moved to settle its part in a nationwide class-action lawsuit against distributors and a manufacturer of opioid pain pills. According to the December 2021 county commissioner meeting’s agenda paperwork, though the overall amount of the settlement is still being finalized, the current figure is approximately $26.5 billion. Of that amount, Monroe County would receive $206,000 annually, while the Keys’ five municipalities will get a total of $22,000 annually, over a period of about 17.5 years.

“On balance, the proposed settlement is a good deal for Monroe County,” said assistant county attorney Cynthia Hall. “It will provide approximately $206,000 per year to the county, and another $22,000 collectively to the five municipalities, over a period of 17.5 years, for use on substance abuse abatement. Monroe County would receive a slightly higher share than its pro rata share based on population.”

Another lawsuit that the county has against three other opioid manufacturers, including the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma — which made the highly addictive pill OxyContin — is still pending. That suit has been complicated by the fact that the three manufacturers have declared bankruptcy, Hall told Keys Weekly.

This news comes on the heels of recent nationwide headlines that declared the opioid epidemic led to the highest annual rate of drug-abuse death rates ever.

“In the 12-month period that ended in April, more than 100,000 Americans died of overdoses,” a Nov. 17, 2021, New York Times article said. “The figure marks the first time the number of overdose deaths in the United States has exceeded 100,000 a year, more than the toll of car crashes and gun fatalities combined. … The vast majority (was) caused by synthetic opioids.”

Florida and Monroe County are not immune to this trend. According to paperwork submitted by the county to receive a grant for its jail drug abuse treatment program, “Monroe County (has) drug abuse rates higher than both the state and national averages. The Drug Enforcement Agency noted in their 2019 Opioid Report that from 2006 to 2012 there were 30,791,325 prescription pain pills, enough for 60 pills per person per year, supplied to Monroe County.”

Attorney Hall explained that around 2018, the county decided to file a complaint — along with other cities, counties and states nationwide — against pain pill manufacturers and distributors after considering the effect the opioid epidemic had with its employees.

“We were talking about the expenditure of Monroe County’s health plan to treat opioid addictions, the amount of dollars and staff time necessary to treat people who were suffering from opioid problems, including the expenditure for Narcan,” said Hall.

Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is a nasal spray that can treat a narcotic overdose.

Hall emphasized that any money received from a settlement would not be an attempt to get money back that the county had already paid out of pocket to help opioid users. “Instead, it would be forward-facing dollars available for treatment programs, forward-looking things as opposed for things that happened in the past,” she said.

Once the settlement money is received, Hall said, the county would also like to arrange talks among the municipalities to make sure the money is split equitably for drug treatment programs within the Keys, since the county is getting the lion’s share of the settlement in the area.

The defendants in this lawsuit include three national distributors: Amerisource Bergen Corporation, which is partnered with Walgreens, among other entities; McKesson, which is partnered with CVS, among others; and Cardinal Health, which is partnered with CVS, among others. One manufacturer is also included in this suit: Johnson & Johnson, through its parent company Janssen.

Monroe County is also involved in another multi-district lawsuit, which is still tangled up in court due to the fact that the

three defendants have all declared bankruptcy: manufacturers Purdue Pharma, Insys and Mallinckrodt.

According to Reuters.com, a federal judge threw out a $4.5 billion settlement that legally shielded members of the Sackler family — who own Purdue Pharma — from future opioid lawsuits. In national news coverage, the Sackler family name has become synonymous with their product OxyContin, a pain pill that added fuel to the fire of the epidemic.

“There cannot be two forms of justice – one for ordinary Americans and a different one for billionaires,” Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a Dec. 17, 2021, Reuters.com article, in response to the settlement being thrown out. “I’m prepared to take this fight all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary, to ensure true accountability for the Sackler family.”

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey and his staff have borne witness to the local wreckage of the opioid epidemic. He pointed out doctors have over-prescribed opioid pain pills to patients, who would then become addicted.

Ramsay expressed concern that users of opioids see Narcan as a safety net and therefore feel more comfortable abusing drugs.

He pointed out that Narcan is available over the counter in CVS and said that addicts often use in pairs. They make a deadly pact to use their drug of choice one at a time. If one person looks like they are overdosing, the other person will revive them with Narcan.

“It encourages people to use drugs at higher volumes,” Ramsay explained. “Last year, we had a couple in a trailer with three kids. In a garbage trailer. They had Narcan, and they had the same pact. But they were so high, one passed out while the other overdosed. The husband died.”

HOUSE SEAT SEES INCUMBENT, PLUS THREE CHALLENGERS

lorida State Rep. Jim Mooney ventured from the Southernmost district to Tallahassee for the start of a 60-day legislative session on Jan. 11.

Mooney enters the second year of his twoyear term that’s up for election, which three other candidates and he will vie for this November.

Mooney, a Republican from Islamorada, secured a primary victory in summer 2020.

Months later, he went on to beat Key West Democrat Clint Barras in the November general election.

The win brought big shoes to fill, with Holly Raschein terming out following eight consecutive years representing the Florida Keys and south Miami-Dade. Entering year two, Mooney will look to move appropriations to the finish line. They include funds for the Key West Glass Crusher, coral restoration at Mote Marine Laboratory and vessel pumpout in Monroe County, to name a few.

He’s proposing a bill that would allow certain coastal communities to establish a pilot program to regulate single-use plastics.

Mooney is also working through an anchoring bill with state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation that would provide 100 mooring sites within a mile of Key West Bight City Dock.

As for the 2022 election, Mooney told the Keys Weekly that his focus remains on the 19 appropriation requests and six bills he’s looking to get passed through the state legislature this session.

On the Republican side, Big Pine Key resident Robert Allen filed paperwork in December to challenge Mooney. A primary would take place Aug. 23.

“I’m going to do the job I was elected to do and let the chips fall where they fall,” Mooney said. “I think my actions, what I did last year and what I do this year, will speak for me.”

Alongside Rodriguez, Mooney was able to secure full funding for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act for the first time since it became law in 2016. The two legislators have bills in each chamber that ask for recurring funds for the program, which supports water quality projects and the purchase of land.

NEW YEAR, ANOTHER ROUND OF ELECTIONS Republican State Rep. Jim Mooney.

He was against language within an approved transportation bill that overturned Key West’s vote to limit the number and size of cruise ships coming to port. That vote of approval by state legislators last session — and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature of the bill — drew anti-corruption lawyer Adam Gentle to enter the race for House District 120.

A Democrat with a residence address on Big Coppitt Key, Gentle withdrew his bid for Florida’s 25th Congressional District and filed his paperwork for the House race on Jan. 4.

In explaining his decision, Gentle said in a release that lawmakers in Washington, D.C. weren’t the only ones ignoring the people. Legislators in Florida were doing the same. Gentle alludes to the Key West vote that was overturned some six months later by state legislators.

“Rather than represent our community’s interests in Tallahassee, Republican lawmakers have been rubbing elbows with special interests and have silenced their vote on local issues,” Gentle said. “As an anti-corruption lawyer, I have spent my legal career investigating and rooting out corruption, and I’ll go head-to-head with the corrupt players in Florida politics.”

Originally from Michigan, Gentle studied at Columbia University in New York and attended George Washington Law School.

He previously lived in Los Angeles, working with charitable organizations like The Young Americans, which promotes “understanding and goodwill among people throughout the world” through the performing arts.

Gentle said he’s running to fight for local business owners, veterans, the environment and anyone trying to get ahead.

Also running on the Democratic side is the former House District 120 and State Senate 39 candidate Daniel Horton-Diaz. The former district chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell filed his paperwork on Jan. 5.

A resident of Cutler Bay, Horton-Diaz lost in a 2020 Democratic primary in the Senate District 39 race to Rep. Javier Fernandez.

Horton-Diaz secured 41% of the vote with Fernandez garnering 59%. However, HortonDiaz secured 55% of the vote in Monroe County.

He lost in a 2016 House race to Republican Rep. Holly Raschein. He secured 43% while Raschein garnered 57% of the votes.

Going into his third run for office, Horton-Diaz feels confident between the connections he’s made in the district with voters. And he said he’s willing to do the work like he did in 2016 when he knocked on thousands of doors.

“In 2020, I had to figure out how I could reach people. What I ended up doing was drafting a letter to all the voters in the Keys who voted in the House District race in 2016 and still lived in Keys,” he said. “I had 8,000 envelopes, hand signed and stamped. That is one of the reasons I did well in Keys even though I wasn’t able to get out in the Keys.

It’s important for me that people know I care. This is not about grabbing power.”

Gentle and Horton-Diaz will vie to appear on the ballot under the Democratic line in an Aug. 23 primary.

The election comes as the legislature redraws districts from which Florida voters elect their state representatives, state senators and members of the U.S. House. It’s done after each decennial census to adjust for uneven growth in different parts of the state.

Per census data, Florida’s population increased from 18.8 million in 2010 to 21.5 million in 2020. Average number of people in each congressional district rose by 769,000, while the number of people in each of the 120 state House districts went up by almost 180,000. While House redistricting plans would adjust the district’s boundaries, it’ll still cover the Keys and south Miami-Dade.

oral Shores 1991 graduate Jason Kendall knows what it feels like to graduate without receiving a load of scholarships. A resident of Key Largo, the U.S. Marine major who’s currently stationed in Stuttgart, Germany is assisting his community, specifically senior students in the Upper Keys.

Recently, Kendall created a fund to offer two $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in 2022. Not only are the awards recognizing students, but they’re also being named in honor of two local educators Kendall had in school, Kay Horn and John Donnelly.

“Both of these educators had a significant impact on me and the person I’ve become. For that reason, I have them to be the first two individuals recognized with awarding a scholarship in their names,” Kendall said.

During his senior year, Kendall said he signed up for an algebra class at Florida Keys Community College, known now as the College of the Florida Keys. There, he met Horn.

After the second class, Horn asked the senior why he was taking the class.

In response, Kendall told Horn that he needed to practice for the SAT. Horn acknowledged that she’d work with him on the math portion and told him not to worry about his night class grade.

“From then on at the beginning of each class, she would give me handwritten math problems that she wanted me to work on that were designed to help me with the SAT,” Kendall said.

“In addition to taking the night class at FKCC, she also tutored me three days a week after school at no charge until I took the SAT. Her kindness and generosity has always been something I have remembered.”

Among Kendall’s teachers at Coral Shores was John Donnelly. He recalls taking a study hall class with the Purple Heart recipient, who helped him with the class workload. Kendall said Donnelly’s approach to teaching gave him the extra help needed to achieve success in school.

In addition, Kendall said, his time with Donnelly exposed him to the Marine Corps for the first time.

“This led me to join the Marine Corps after graduating from college and eventually retiring from the Ma-

rines as an officer. The little known influences he had on me early in my life helped pave the way for me to become the person I am today both personally and professionally,” Kendall said.

Kendall won’t forget the generosity Horn and Donnelly gave him during his years in school, which led him to create the Upper Keys Scholarship Fund. Not only will it help future leaders in their quest for higher education, but it also recognizes the contributions unselfishly given by teachers and community leaders. Through Kendall’s scholarship fund, teachers can be recognized from Upper Keys schools, including Key Largo School, Plantation Key School, Coral Shores High School or any of the Montessori schools.

A selected board of past students from the schools will select the awarded student and recognized teacher for scholarships that come from the general fund. Individual donations can be made identifying a specific teacher to be recognized, but the board will make the determination of the deserving student, though student recommendations from the donor will be considered.

Kendall said the nonprofit provides the service that includes securing the donation and distributing it in the form of a scholarship at no cost.

“Because we are just getting started a lot of our procedures are still fluid and are working on constructing our bylaws,” Kendall said. “That being said, we are prepared to award scholarships this school year.”

Scholarship awards through the nonprofit have no specific stipulations attached. Kendall said they’re open to everybody. Recalling the struggle obtaining scholarships to pay for school, Kendall said he wants to assist those who might not have several awards to their name.

“My thought is I don’t want to load up somebody who’s already getting several scholarships,” he said. “Ours are for the people who don’t have any.

And I don’t care what your family background is. This is to appreciate somebody that, ‘Hey, you’re going to school, here’s some money.’”

Kendall is currently in Germany with his wife and children. He said he’ll be back in the Keys in January 2024.

Kendall helped reinvigorate the VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo in 2018 with help from fellow veterans and the community.

BAD ACTS LEAD TO POSITIVE CHANGES MANDY MILES

our months have passed since early September, when a Marathon High School studentathlete wrote the words “white” and “colored” above two adjacent MHS water fountains, a reference to the days of racial segregation. The word “privilege” was later added under “white,” while “black” and “negro” were inscribed under “colored.”

At the Nov. 16 school board meeting, longtime resident and parent Stephanie Scuderi described the incident as “a symptom of a more pervasive problem.”

“There is a very real perception out there that matters of this nature get swept under the rug,” Scuderi said.

“Overcoming that perception is just one challenge for the school district.

We need to find a way to infuse a base level of kindness and respect.”

Superintendent Theresa Axford told the board the district was taking the situation “very seriously.” She described a program to be launched at MHS called, “We Don’t Talk Like That Here.”

“The intention,” Axford said, “is to avoid any kind of inappropriate speech that features bigotry, racial profiling, homophobia, name calling, all of those things that make people feel hurt or ridiculed.”

Fast forward to January 2022, and “We Don’t Talk Like That Here” has been expanded to all schools in the district, Axford told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 10. She also provided the following update on the program and others like it that target troubling behavior and produce more positive outcomes.

“I want people to know that these inexcusable actions have led to positive programs and changes in our schools,” Axford said. Wounded Warriors return to visit the Keys

A

caravan of nearly 40 cyclists made their way down sections of the Overseas Highway and across the Seven Mile Bridge for Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride this past weekend.

The annual ride is designed as an inspirational fundraiser for veterans recovering from both visible and invisible wounds of war in American military hospitals.

Though several of the participants were missing one or more limbs due to previous combat injuries, they used specially adapted bicycles to travel as one unit.

The riders began in Key Largo on Friday and made their way to Key West by Saturday, ending with a community ride around the Southernmost City with members of the public. BRIEFLY Health Department: Stay home if you’re sick The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County urges all those who are sick to stay home to prevent infectious diseases, especially COVID-19, from spreading.

“The infection rate of COVID-19 in Monroe County is high. By continuing to be around others while knowingly sick, you can be exposing not only your friends, family, and co-workers, but also their families. Stay home to cut off the transmission of COVID-19,” said Dr. Mark Whiteside, medical director for the department.

“One in three people getting tested in our county for COVID-19 is coming out positive,” said Bob Eadie, Health Officer and Administrator. “The best way to prevent anyone from getting infected in the first place is to follow basic public health principles. Masking when around others, covering your cough or sneeze, washing your hands, and social distancing, even when vaccinated, are key to slowing the spread of this virus.”

If you have not yet been vaccinated or received your booster shot, do so as soon as possible to prevent serious infection, hospitalization and death. If you test positive for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, stay home. Monitor symptoms and stay in touch with your doctor. If you are having trouble breathing or have chest pain, go to your local emergency room as soon as possible.

If you were exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and have not yet received a booster shot or are unvaccinated, stay home. Testing should be done if symptomatic or as recommended by a healthcare provider.

Employers are encouraged to adopt infection prevention and control strategies and policies to keep employees from getting sick and spreading it to others.

History of Diving opens new exhibit The History of Diving Museum Islamorada will open its new featured exhibit, Dive Into Art: FantaSea, the fourth collaborative art show with the Museum and Art Guild of the Purple Isles (AGPI) on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The exhibit and art show will encompass fantasy elements tied to the ocean: mermaids, pirates, sea monsters and more, as well as literary themes such as fairy tales, fantastical poems and epics.

ated by students at eight different Monroe County schools, making this exhibit the largest collaboration to date. The student art ranges from sculptural hard cover books to giant story panels. AAA: rising oil prices could pressure pumps Florida gas prices dropped another penny last week, with some drivers finding much deeper discounts at the pump. Although the state average was $3.20 per gallon on Jan. 10, 7% of Florida gas stations had pump prices below $3 a gallon.

"January gas prices are often driven down by lower fuel demand.

Unfortunately, that downward trend at the pump may soon come to an end," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA The Auto Club Group. "Oil prices shot up last week and that could restore upward pressure in prices at the pump."

a’el (pronounced like the initials “J.L.”) Powers is in her 13th year of nursing. Throughout her career, she has worked in every specialty/department except for an ICU: a cardiac catheterization lab (a.k.a., a “cath lab”), an ER, an OR, a cardiac rehab, on the floor and as a travel nurse. But it was during her time in cardiac rehab that she had the epiphany to change her focus and become a psychiatric nurse practitioner and create her own practice, Powers Mental Health.

“In outpatient cardiac rehab, I recognized a patient I’d cared for in the cath lab,” she told Keys Weekly.

“He had chest pain one morning, drove to the ER to play it safe, then suddenly he’s being rushed to the OR for emergency open-heart surgery. I still can see his dejection and pain when he broke down in tears, this strong, attractive, successful middle-aged man. He said to me, ‘You don’t prepare us for this. You fix our heart, and you send us on our way … but you don’t tell us we’re still going to be scared when it’s all said and done.’ That was the day I knew I needed to make a change. I am not alone in the realization that health care is treating the body yet neglecting the brain.”

She studied to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner, who, like a psychiatrist, evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental disorders.

“I am neither pro- nor anti-medication. However, experience has taught me that positive thinking or exercise or walks to the beach are not cure-alls for everyone,” she said, explaining that suicide and opioid abuse are serious health problems in the Florida Keys. She can write prescriptions for mental health issues and can provide Suboxone, a medication-assisted treatment for those addicted to heroin and pills.

She is passionate about lifting the stigma that is attached to mental health disorders.

“I have been personally affected,” she revealed. “I’ve had suicide and addiction in my close family, and I myself have dealt with ADHD and depression. I had an exboyfriend scoff that it could be fixed by a walk on the beach. I couldn't believe how much mental illness could impact someone's life, and to be honest with you, the stigma then and now just still baffles me.”

Ja’el Powers worked in almost every specialty during her 13-year career as a nurse, but she studied to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner after discovering her passion for mental health. CONTRIBUTED

When she witnesses such judgment, Powers said, she remembers her mantra: “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” At her practice, her focuses will include — in addition to PTSD, depression and anxiety — suicide and treating the mental health of male patients.

“We consider it a weakness when a man has feelings and sheds tears,” Powers pointed out.

“So why are we surprised when they self-medicate, drink too much, get divorced — now that their jobs are affected — and/or kill themselves?”

But at her heart, Powers is a small-town girl who was raised in the country, in Ottawa Valley, Canada. “And then I sat next to a stranger on an airplane and married him, “ she said with a laugh.

The couple lived in South Palm Beach County for 28 years, but they visited the Florida Keys from time to time. After her husband's death from cancer, she made the big move to the Keys.

“I planned to move to the Keys ever since my first visit in the mid1990s,” she said. “I even fell in love with the name ‘Islamorada,’” she said, noting that she now lives and practices there.

ith a new layout to decrease congestion and to provide for wider aisles, Upper Keys Rotary’s 27th annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, presented by Keys Deck & Dock Supply, returns from a pandemic-forced year off to Founders Park in Islamorada, MM 87 on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27.

Onsite parking will be available for those with a handicap permit.

Free shuttle available from Coral Shores High School, MM 89, oceanside.

The all-outdoor event will take over nearly 12 acres of Founders Park with more than 300 vendors selling all things nautical, including boats, hot tubs, fishing and boating equipment, home and personal accessories, clothing and more.

“We are so excited to bring back this event after pivoting to a virtual fundraiser in 2021,” said Rotarian Frank Derfler. “The main goal of the event is raising money to support scholarships for local kids pursuing continuing education after high school, whether through college, trade school or certification. We’ve awarded more than $2.5 million in the nearly three decades of this event.”

As part of the event, a 50/50 raffle is being held with tickets on sale virtually only through 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27. The winner will be announced at 3 p.m. and doesn’t need to be present to win. More details available at KeysRotary.org.

New for 2022 is the inclusion of food trucks throughout the park offering a variety of favorites, from barbeque to fish sandwiches to specialty tastes including Thai, Mexican and Italian cuisine.

ollowing a nationwide search, the board of directors of the Florida Keys History & Discovery Foundation selected Bonnie Barnes, of Key Largo, as the new executive director for the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center.

Barnes has 25 years of marketing and communications background as well as 20 years of non-profit leadership experience.

Barnes started her first business at 17 in her hometown of Las Vegas, and moved to Florida in 1988, working careers that demonstrate her passion for history, conservation and preservation. Barnes earned an MBA in leadership and business development from Jacksonville University in 2006, launching a career as a leader of Florida-based non-profit organizations.

She moved to Key Largo in 2017 as the director of development for Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) and recently worked as executive director of the Deering Estate in Cutler Bay and Turtles Fly Too (TF2), which transports endangered species for rehabilitation and release. Marathon’s Turtle Hospital and Mote Marine Sanctuary have cared for and released numerous sea turtles transported

by Turtles Fly Too. Barnes is an active member of the Ocean Reef, Islamorada and Key Largo chambers of commerce, and is involved in the Business and Professional Women of the Upper Keys. She volunteers with local nonprofits, including serving as chairperson of the Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation, which organizes the annual “Light Up Key Largo” event during the Christmas season.

TRAUMA STAR SETS NEW RECORD IN 2021

T

he Trauma Star air ambulance helicopter program set a new record in 2021 for the number of annual flights flown with 1,383.

The yearly average is typically about 1,000 flights, so last year was a particularly busy and successful year for the professional pilots, nurses, paramedics and mechanics.

“The number of flights shows how important this program is for Monroe County,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “I want to thank our partners with Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Board of County Commissioners as well as everyone on staff who provide its top quality level of service every day.”

The Trauma Star program is administered by the Sheriff’s Office, which also staffs the pilots, the mechanics and the program director while the flight nurses and flight paramedics are staffed by Monroe County Fire Rescue.

Trauma Star is easily one of the busiest air ambulances services in the country, often flying four times the rate of other agencies. Trauma Star is also flying at greater distances than most other agencies due to the geography of the Florida Keys.

About one-third of the Trauma Star flights are for trauma alerts regarding incidents such as vehicle crashes; the remaining two-thirds are critical inter-facility flights for hospital patients in immediate need of a higher level of care.

There are three Trauma Star helicopters, which operate out of two bases: one at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport and a second at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.

The Trauma Star helicopters are capable of double-lifts and are often flying more than one patient, so the number of patients served last year was even greater than 1,400.

Trauma Star provides life support missions to Monroe County residents and property owners at no out-of-pocket expense.

he Monroe County Fire Rescue Fire Academy celebrated 25 new graduates in midDecember. The new graduates successfully completed the fourth “Hot Shots” Minimum Standards training program at the county-owned Joe London Fire Training Academy on Grassy Key. Since September, the graduates had more than 500 hours of intensive classroom and practical training and completed the program’s 17 performance objectives, allowing them to register for the State of Florida Firefighter I and II examination.

Of the graduates, 23 were qualified residents who had their $2,200 tuition fee waived as part of the “Hot Shots” program, which was approved and funded by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners in exchange for a three-year commitment to work or volunteer as a firefighter anywhere in the Florida Keys.

The previous three “Hot Shots” programs graduated 83 students, many of whom are now employed or volunteer in fire stations throughout the Florida Keys. To be hired at Monroe County Fire Rescue, a candidate must also complete EMT training. MOVIE PRODUCER JON LANDAU PUTS ISLAMORADA HOME UP FOR SALE Bali Hai property on the market for $13.9 million

he producer of “Titanic” and “Avatar” Jon Landau and his wife, Julie, who have more than 350 unique varieties of plants on almost four acres of property, are putting their Islamorada residence on the market.

Situated on the oceanside along the Old Highway on Plantation Key, the asking price is $13.999 million for the property Bali Hai. The Landaus took the name from the 1947 book “Tales of the South Pacific” by James Michener.

The property was put on the market Jan. 6. It’s being marketed

by American Caribbean Real Estate, Christie’s International Real Estate.

“I feel like it is a privilege to market this extraordinary property in Islamorada,” said Joy Martin, managing owner and broker of American Caribbean, Christie’s International Real Estate.

Martin added that calls have already come in from interested parties regarding the property.

Landau is set to spend the next couple years in New Zealand filming “Avatar 2,” which comes out later this year and “Avatar 3,” which is scheduled for 2024.

Landau’s been in New Zealand filming with the “Avatar” team since spring 2020.

An artistically designed gate is the entryway to a driveway cushioned by lush landscaping on both sides. Bali Hai contains large and rare specimens, with hidden pathways that meander through the property. Visitors can view the Old Man Palm, strangler fig, Thai beauty bamboo and more. Most plants on the property have QR codes that link to information about them.

Bali Hai was on full display as the Landaus showcased their property during the Upper Keys Garden Club’s annual Garden Walk in 2020.

“This home was architecturally designed with a Balinese influence,”

said Martin. “Bali Hai’s unique design has a complex roof structure resulting in gorgeous exposed beams. The exterior columns are covered in a green riverbed stone imported from East Timor and Bali. The balance is a natural beauty surrounding the home inside and out. When you arrive at the estate, you are immediately transported to your own private Balinese resort in the Keys.”

With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, the main residence also features wooden beamed ceilings, Brazilian honey teakwood flooring and 18-foot tall Ipe walnut wood milled in Manaus, Brazil.

A temperature-controlled walk-in 1,000-plus-bottle wine cellar is complete with a computerized barcode scanning system. In the main living area, a coral wall fireplace accents the open, high ceilings and a customdesigned wet bar with vintage glass mural, liquor storage cabinet and grand elevator entrance.

Other unique features at Bali Hai include a 7,000-gallon saltwater pond with tropical fish, a tennis court, a 300-foot dock with two boat lifts — the larger being a 27,000-pound boat lift — and a custom-designed hot tub with lighted accents and a fire pit in the center.

“This home is perfectly situated in Islamorada and has something for everyone,” Martin said, “from the game room to the gym overlooking the ocean, the pool and spa, and the tennis court. Or you can just relax on the wide verandas and take in the sound of the waves.”

Bali Hai has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Coastal Living and Architectural Digest.

The Landaus were active in the community ever since their arrival to the Keys in 2010. They sponsored everything from Islamorada’s Fourth of July festivities to the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce’s holiday fest at Founders Park each year. They’re also big supporters of Mariners Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Upper Keys Humane Society and Coral Shores High School.

Following Hurricane Irma, the Landaus sprang into action to assist the island chain with the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund in the Upper Keys. With help from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, grants

were given to businesses and residents in need to rebuild and recover. Together with CFFK’s Emergency Relief Fund, more than $1.4 million was raised and distributed for Irma recovery in the Keys.

And during the pandemic, Jon and Julie Landau created the Landau Family COVID-19 Food Fund for the Upper Keys at CFFK to assist residents in dire need due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Landau Food Fund complements CFFK’s Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund that is already providing aid, including food and supplies, through Keys nonprofits to families, seniors, service workers and others who are out of work and affected by COVID-19’s economic impacts.

“What makes the Keys so special is the community of people that call this island chain their home,” Landau said when the fund was created in April 2020.

Real estate sales in the Florida Keys were hot in 2021. At $11 million, the private oceanside island known as Palm Island sold in March — the highest private island sale in the Keys — after spending two years on the market. In Marathon, a 3.6-acre location known as Palm Island sold for $11 million. That same month, an $11.9-million home at 1150 Bulevar de Palmas in Marathon sold to a female oil and gas magnate from Texas.

The Landaus property could break a record for highest sale in the Florida Keys if sold for the asking price of $13.999 million.

Due to interest, we held two PADI Shark Aware classes this week. The “PADI Shark Aware Diver” specialty allows divers to understand not only the importance of these apex predators to our environment but also the immense threats they face. Many of the species that used to be abundant in our Florida Keys waters are now threatened or endangered.

Each Shark Aware specialty class includes two dives at some of our more “sharky” reefs — local reefs known to still enjoy healthy shark populations. We mostly observe nurse sharks on these reefs, but sometimes we get lucky and spot bull, reef and even hammerhead sharks.

The PADI Shark Aware class is available every Friday afternoon, at both Islamorada Dive Center and Florida Keys Dive Center. Give us a call to learn more and sign up.

he 41st Annual 7 Mile Bridge Run will be on April 2, 2022, and plans are to again run from the west end of the bridge to the east end. Registration is online only.

Registration opens on Tuesday, Feb. 1 beginning at 6 a.m. Anyone can register on this date, but only 1,500 entries are accepted and the field fills very quickly. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up their bib numbers that matches the address used to register.

Early registration opens for Monroe County residents only on Thursday, Jan. 27 beginning at 6 a.m. To qualify as a Monroe County resident, runners must use a Monroe County, Florida address that matches a photo ID. There are a limited number of entries available for locals only who register on this date. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up run numbers that has the same address used to register. If unsuccessful on Jan. 27, Monroe County residents may also try registering on Feb. 1.

Packet pickup at Faro Blanco will be on Friday, April 1 until 8 p.m. Runners need to be present with a photo ID that matches the registration address to pick up the runner’s packet.

Runsignup.com will again be used for registration, so creation of an account on the site will help expedite race registration. The registration fee will be $75.

Accommodations are made for Monroe County students to register at a discounted rate, courtesy of Keys Federal Credit Union, early in the month of January. Those interested can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Marathon Runners Club, PO Box 500110, Marathon, FL 33050, and a student registration form will be mailed to them.

These student-only registration forms are to be received back at the Post Office box no later than Jan. 21.

i friends! Reef the fox here with this week’s “Reef’s Report.”

Did you notice I got a new column photo? New year, new me. I’m not a baby any more, so we needed an updated photo. I mean, I will always be the baby (even though Coral is younger than me).

I told you all last week I was going to let you know what the big surprise was that mom ordered REEF for us.

Are you ready for it? It’s a friggin microscope.

So there is something really cool going on Friday, Jan. 14 with Rainbow Reef Dive Center. Join Coral Restoration Foundation team divers for an afternoon restoring the local coral reefs. This is a unique opportunity to use your dive training as a tool to help create a healthier marine environment and to earn the Project Aware Coral Conservation specialty in the process. Required tools will be provided by CRF. Rental dive gear is available but not included. CRF dive trips will include any two of a variety of nursery maintenance dives, performing coral surveys for scientific databases, or outplanting coral. Upon completion of the dive event, each person will receive a Project Aware Coral Conservation card in the mail.

Another cool thing happening a little further south is the Florida Keys Astronomy Club and their Night Sky Program. The evening will start with an introduction and orientation. Enjoy learning about the night sky through a group activity and story telling. Then, prepare to be amazed as you use telescopes to view various celestial objects. This is happening at Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon. The program will begin 10 minutes before sunset and it is a free event with park admission.

‘THE NEED IS GREAT’ Upper Keys Humane Society hosts fundraiser for new building to care for animals CHARLOTTE TWINE

eterinarian Michael Claudio delicately picked up a mewling ginger kitten, who had been nestled against her mama on a pile of blankets. A few weeks prior, her pregnant mother — given the name “Magic” by staff — had found her way to Key Largo’s Upper Keys Humane Society at MM 101 a few weeks ago, guided as if by an inner radar.

Claudio gently held the kitten to his chest. “This is why we do what we do,” he said, looking down and making soft clicking noises at the tiny creature.

By “what we do,” he means giving stray animals TLC, but also TNR, which stands for “Trap, Neuter and Release.” In this way, Claudio explains, the Humane Society will cut down on overpopulation and repopulation of the feral cat populations in the Upper Keys.

Claudio is the medical director for the Upper Keys Humane Society and also runs his own practice, so he devotes many hours of his week to taking care of animals. He considers it his calling. UKHS President Angela Boehm is also passionate about their nonprofit’s cause.

“We are the only no-kill shelter in Monroe County, and we take in every animal,” she said. “We have dogs who are not adoptable — they went to a couple of homes but it didn’t work out. But we give them a beautiful life here.”

“The love and care of the staffing here is like no other,” said Claudio. For example, shelter supervisor Karla Perrine is the “mom” of the on-site animals and bottle-feeds the kittens.

Boehm explained that though their name is Upper Keys Humane Society — so christened by its

founder in 1972 — the nonprofit is not in any way affiliated with the organizations American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or American Humane.

“We get no funding from humane societies or the county,” she said.

“We’re completely funded by the community,” Claudio said, pointing out that the nonprofit recently received a generous donation from UKHS clients in Ocean Reef and Key Largo for $400,000.

“We’ve got a lovely community.”

This donation, Boehm and Claudio announced, will be used to break ground on a new UKHS building just next door to the old one at MM101. The new facility will have a surgical salon and more dog runs, as well a quarantine unit for new arrivals — a space that they didn’t have room for before.

The pair speaks highly of MarrVelous Pet Rescue, another animal rescue nonprofit nearby. The main difference between UKHS and MarrVelous is that UKHS is licensed by the county to provide overnight shelter to animals.

“I want to make clear this is a beautiful melding of two organizations with the same goal,” said Boehm, explaining that both nonprofits want to provide food, care and treatment for abandoned or stray animals. “The need is great.”

The need is so great, in fact, that Claudio and Boehm hope to meet with the county to talk about new endeavors and get its support. In particular, Claudio would like to pair up foster animals with the elderly and terminally ill residents of the Upper Keys community, forming a mutually beneficial relationship between human and animal.

“We would pay for the basic care of the animals, but I’m hoping the county can point us in the right direction to get this program started. I firmly believe in the human-animal bond,” he said.

will go toward buying the “innards” to the new building, such as equipment that locals can have named in their honor with a plaque. The party will have a dinner, two drink tickets, a DJ and live and silent auctions with prizes such as restaurant dinners and hotel stays.

“We’re known for putting the ‘fun’ in ‘fundraisers,’” said Boehm with a laugh.

he Marathon Dolphins girls middle school basketball team traveled up the island chain for a game against the Plantation Key Panthers on Jan. 6. The scoring went back and forth throughout the game inside the PKS gym, but coming out on top were the Dolphins, 24-21. The PKS boys and girls teams will head to Marathon for games on Tuesday, Jan. 18 beginning at 5 p.m.
