Renovation of the two-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon is complete following its closure in 2016. In total, the 30-year restoration and maintenance plan was budgeted at $77 million, $41 million of which was spent during initial repairs. Nicknamed “Old Seven,” the bridge was built as part of railroad magnate Henry Flagler’s Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad that was completed in January 1912, connecting the Keys with each other and mainland Florida for the first time.

I

n the wake of councilman Trevor Wofsey’s resignation, the Marathon City Council discussed plans to appoint an interim council member and attended to the unforeseen resignation’s impact on potential changes to council term limits.

According to the city’s charter, the council has until Feb. 4 to choose a replacement for Wofsey, who resigned on Jan. 7 following a domestic battery arrest.

In an address to his fellow council members, councilman Steve Cook expressed concern that a nominee was seemingly pre-selected to fill Wofsey’s seat. Cook then urged the council to take time to consider the nominees in a special call meeting to avoid any public impressions of impropriety.

“There is a difference between the coconut telegraph and violating Sunshine Law,” said Cook. Citing instances in which he had allegedly learned of several appointments or city hirings prior to official votes or confirmation, Cook said he was upset not by the selections themselves, but the manner in which he had learned of the predetermined proceedings.

“However we decide to do this selection process, I think we are obliged to follow the policies and procedures that we have set forth legally to install an official in the city and never have

the citizens think that (these rules) don’t matter,” he said.

Councilman Luis Gonzalez also expressed concern regarding messages he received since news of the vacancy broke. “We are in an unfortunate situation, and we have to deal with this matter,” said Gonzalez. “No matter who we end up selecting, there will be folks who like that person and folks who don’t. I know that we are a much better community than what has been displayed to me this week, either by phone call, by email or by text.”

After a brief discussion, the council agreed to address the vacancy in a special call meeting on Monday, Jan. 24 at 12 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.

Candidates who submit their names for consideration will be required to submit an application to fill the seat.

As the unexpected vacancy comes in the midst of a potential change to city council term limits, the council also voted to alter the proposed city charter amendment extending city council term lengths from three to four years.

According to the city’s current charter, since the balance of Wofsey’s term is greater than 81 days, the council member appointed to fill Wofsey’s seat will serve until November 2022, when a total of four vacant council seats will be up for election.

Intending to avoid such a large turnover in a single election in the future, City Attorney Steve Williams proposed changes in order to maintain election cycles in which only two or three of the five council seats would be available at any one time.

Under Williams’ changes, at the next regularly scheduled election, the person receiving the fewest number of votes but still winning one of the four vacant seats will serve a shorter term to preserve the 3-2 election cycles. If the charter amendment is approved by council, and subsequently by voters at the August 2022 primary election, the three highest vote-getters in the November 2022 general election would serve from 2022 to 2026, while the fourth highest would serve a twoyear term – expiring in tandem with Gonzalez’s term in 2024.

Williams’ proposed changes would allow for similarly altered elections following unexpected vacancies in the future.

As this was the first time such significant changes were added to the proposed amendment, the new ordinance will be heard again in its entirety at February’s regularly scheduled city council meeting. continued on page 18

HOUSE SEAT SEES INCUMBENT, PLUS THREE CHALLENGERS

F

lorida State Rep. Jim Mooney ventured from the Southernmost district to Tallahassee for the start of a 60-day legislative session on Jan. 11.

Mooney enters the second year of his twoyear term that’s up for election, which three other candidates and he will vie for this November.

Mooney, a Republican from Islamorada, secured a primary victory in summer 2020.

Months later, he went on to beat Key West Democrat Clint Barras in the November general election.

The win brought big shoes to fill, with Holly Raschein terming out following eight consecutive years representing the Florida Keys and south Miami-Dade. Entering year two, Mooney will look to move appropriations to the finish line. They include funds for the Key West Glass Crusher, coral restoration at Mote Marine Laboratory and vessel pumpout in Monroe County, to name a few.

He’s proposing a bill that would allow certain coastal communities to establish a pilot program to regulate single-use plastics.

Mooney is also working through an anchoring bill with state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation that would provide 100 mooring sites within a mile of Key West Bight City Dock.

As for the 2022 election, Mooney told the Keys Weekly that his focus remains on the 19 appropriation requests and six bills he’s looking to get passed through the state legislature this session.

On the Republican side, Big Pine Key resident Robert Allen filed paperwork in December to challenge Mooney. A primary would take place Aug. 23.

“I’m going to do the job I was elected to do and let the chips fall where they fall,” Mooney said. “I think my actions, what I did last year and what I do this year, will speak for me.”

Alongside Rodriguez, Mooney was able to secure full funding for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act for the first time since it became law in 2016. The two legislators have bills in each chamber that ask for recurring funds for the program, which supports water quality projects and the purchase of land.

proved transportation bill that overturned Key West’s vote to limit the number and size of cruise ships coming to port. That vote of approval by state legislators last session — and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature of the bill — drew anti-corruption lawyer Adam Gentle to enter the race for House District 120.

A Democrat with a residence address on Big Coppitt Key, Gentle withdrew his bid for Florida’s 25th Congressional District and filed his paperwork for the House race on Jan. 4.

In explaining his decision, Gentle said in a release that lawmakers in Washington, D.C. weren’t the only ones ignoring the people. Legislators in Florida were doing the same. Gentle alludes to the Key West vote that was overturned some six months later by state legislators.

“Rather than represent our community’s interests in Tallahassee, Republican lawmakers have been rubbing elbows with special interests and have silenced their vote on local issues,” Gentle said. “As an anti-corruption lawyer, I have spent my legal career investigating and rooting out corruption, and I’ll go head-to-head with the corrupt players in Florida politics.”

Originally from Michigan, Gentle studied at Columbia University in New York and attended George Washington Law School.

He previously lived in Los Angeles, working with charitable organizations like The Young Americans, which promotes “understanding and goodwill among people throughout the world” through the performing arts.

Gentle said he’s running to fight for local business owners, veterans, the environment and anyone trying to get ahead.

Also running on the Democratic side is the former House District 120 and State Senate 39 candidate Daniel Horton-Diaz. The former district chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell filed his paperwork on Jan. 5.

A resident of Cutler Bay, Horton-Diaz lost in a 2020 Democratic primary in the Senate District 39 race to Rep. Javier Fernandez.

Horton-Diaz secured 41% of the vote with Fernandez garnering 59%. However, HortonDiaz secured 55% of the vote in Monroe County.

He lost in a 2016 House race to Republican Rep. Holly Raschein. He secured 43% while Raschein garnered 57% of the votes.

Going into his third run for office, Horton-Diaz feels confident between the connections he’s made in the district with voters. And he said he’s willing to do the work like he did in 2016 when he knocked on thousands of doors.

“In 2020, I had to figure out how I could reach people. What I ended up doing was drafting a letter to all the voters in the Keys who voted in the House District race in 2016 and still lived in Keys,” he said. “I had 8,000 envelopes, hand signed and stamped. That is one of the reasons I did well in Keys even though I wasn’t able to get out in the Keys.

It’s important for me that people know I care. This is not about grabbing power.”

Gentle and Horton-Diaz will vie to appear on the ballot under the Democratic line in an Aug. 23 primary.

The election comes as the legislature redraws districts from which Florida voters elect their state representatives, state senators and members of the U.S. House. It’s done after each decennial census to adjust for uneven growth in different parts of the state.

Per census data, Florida’s population increased from 18.8 million in 2010 to 21.5 million in 2020. Average number of people in each congressional district rose by 769,000, while the number of people in each of the 120 state House districts went up by almost 180,000. While House redistricting plans would adjust the district’s boundaries, it’ll still cover the Keys and south Miami-Dade.

Interact Club The Interact Club stands for International Action. They participate in community service events every month and work closely with the Marathon Rotary Club to support the community.

The club of 30 students meets at lunch in club sponsor and teacher Michelle James' classroom to brainstorm ideas, events and ways to better support the community.

The club is headed by two-term president Leo Volchek with the assistance of vice president Dante Senmartin, secretary Joseph Cabrera, and treasurer Rylan Chapa.

With the bright minds of all these students put together, they spread the idea to their peers within the school that community service can be rewarding.

“You gain so many connections and involvement with important people in the community,” said Chapa. “I would definitely recommend joining.”

“We have volunteered at weddings, beach clean ups, and now the Celtic festival,” said James. “We are always in need of more volunteers and are looking for new members for our club. Leo Volchek, our president, is really good at recruiting new friends who become members. He will literally walk around school and encourage students to come to the next meeting and become part of the crew.”

Being a part of the Interact Club can be very beneficial. Besides teaching you leadership and responsibility skills, you are able to connect with other Rotarians worldwide. There are also several scholarship opportunities, and aids for all those who give back.

CAMI WRINN 9th grade Girls Weightlifting

Cami Wrinn, a freshman at Marathon, is a first-year member of the girls weightlifting team. She is also heavily involved in the school's theater productions, has impressive grades as a dual enrollment student with FKCC, and looks forward to joining the track team in the spring.

Wrinn said weightlifting is the first sport she has ever participated in.

“One day my friends and I decided to go to a practice,” said Wrinn. “We loved it, and we joined the team. This is a decision that I would not go back on.”

While her decision to join the team was made in a split second, Cami said she needed no convincing from others.

“I really just wanted to take control of my life. I have always thought of myself as lazy and uncoordinated and I am working towards proving myself wrong.”

Wrinn shows up to practice every day not only to become better for the team, but also better for herself. “Part of being a great athlete is knowing that I can never cheat myself out.”

When asked what makes her important to the team, Cami said, “I like to think that I help create a good environment in the weight room. I always deliver a positive attitude and work on encouraging my peers no matter how they did. I follow coach Schubert's example and ask positive follow-up questions after a meet or practice. Coach Schubert makes being a part of the team so fun, and that’s why it brings so many girls together.

“Coach Schubert really cares about the well-being of his students and his athletes. He treats students like they are actual people; he doesn't just brush off what we have to say. He takes your other commitments into consideration. He understands and follows up, which is a really important factor in creating bonds with your team members. It leaves us wanting to come back.”

Expect to see big things from Wrinn in the future, as she plans on continuing with the team until she graduates.

hard-fought battle ended in a draw as the Marathon girls varsity soccer team played host to Coral Shores on Jan. 6. Both sides had plenty of opportunities, but as time expired both teams posted shutouts in a 0-0 tie.

The Dolphins will visit Divine Savior and Florida Christian before returning home to face Somerset Academy on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

COUNTY MOVES TO SETTLE SHARE IN $26.5 BILLION OPIOID LAWSUIT CASE WITH PURDUE PHARMA/ SACKLER FAMILY STILL PENDING

M

onroe County has moved to settle its part in a nationwide class-action lawsuit against distributors and a manufacturer of opioid pain pills. According to the December 2021 county commissioner meeting’s agenda paperwork, though the overall amount of the settlement is still being finalized, the current figure is approximately $26.5 billion. Of that amount, Monroe County would receive $206,000 annually, while the Keys’ five municipalities will get a total of $22,000 annually, over a period of about 17.5 years.

“On balance, the proposed settlement is a good deal for Monroe County,” said assistant county attorney Cynthia Hall. “It will provide approximately $206,000 per year to the county, and another $22,000 collectively to the five municipalities, over a period of 17.5 years, for use on substance abuse abatement. Monroe County would receive a slightly higher share than its pro rata share based on population.”

Another lawsuit that the county has against three other opioid manufacturers, including the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma — which made the highly addictive pill OxyContin — is still pending. That suit has been complicated by the fact that the three manufacturers have declared bankruptcy, Hall told Keys Weekly.

This news comes on the heels of recent nationwide headlines that declared the opioid epidemic led to the highest annual rate of drug-abuse death rates ever.

“In the 12-month period that ended in April, more than 100,000 Americans died of overdoses,” a Nov. 17, 2021, New York Times article said. “The figure marks the first time the number of overdose deaths in the United States has exceeded 100,000 a year, more than the toll of car crashes and gun fatalities combined. … The vast majority (was) caused by synthetic opioids.”

Florida and Monroe County are not immune to this trend. According to paperwork submitted by the county to receive a grant for its jail drug abuse treatment program, “Monroe County (has) drug abuse rates higher than both the state and national averages. The Drug Enforcement Agency noted in their 2019 Opioid Report that from 2006 to 2012 there were 30,791,325 prescription pain pills, enough for 60 pills per person per year, supplied to Monroe County.”

Attorney Hall explained that around 2018, the county decided to file a complaint — along with other cities, counties and states nationwide — against pain pill manufacturers and distributors after considering the effect the opioid epidemic had with its employees.

“We were talking about the expenditure of Monroe County’s health plan to treat opioid addictions, the amount of dollars and staff time necessary to treat people who were suffering from opioid problems, including the expenditure for Narcan,” said Hall.

Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is a nasal spray that can treat a narcotic overdose.

Hall emphasized that any money received from a settlement would not be an attempt to get money back that the county had already paid out of pocket to help opioid users. “Instead, it would be forward-facing dollars available for treatment programs, forward-looking things as opposed for things that happened in the past,” she said.

Once the settlement money is received, Hall said, the county would also like to arrange talks among the municipalities to make sure the money is split equitably for drug treatment programs within the Keys, since the county is getting the lion’s share of the settlement in the area.

The defendants in this lawsuit include three national distributors: Amerisource Bergen Corporation, which is partnered with Walgreens, among other entities; McKesson, which is partnered with CVS, among others; and Cardinal Health, which is partnered with CVS, among others. One manufacturer is also included in this suit: Johnson & Johnson, through its parent company Janssen.

Monroe County is also involved in another multi-district lawsuit, which is still tangled up in court due to the fact that the

three defendants have all declared bankruptcy: manufacturers Purdue Pharma, Insys and Mallinckrodt.

According to Reuters.com, a federal judge threw out a $4.5 billion settlement that legally shielded members of the Sackler family — who own Purdue Pharma — from future opioid lawsuits. In national news coverage, the Sackler family name has become synonymous with their product OxyContin, a pain pill that added fuel to the fire of the epidemic.

“There cannot be two forms of justice – one for ordinary Americans and a different one for billionaires,” Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a Dec. 17, 2021, Reuters.com article, in response to the settlement being thrown out. “I’m prepared to take this fight all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary, to ensure true accountability for the Sackler family.”

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey and his staff have borne witness to the local wreckage of the opioid epidemic. He pointed out doctors have over-prescribed opioid pain pills to patients, who would then become addicted.

Ramsay expressed concern that users of opioids see Narcan as a safety net and therefore feel more comfortable abusing drugs.

He pointed out that Narcan is available over the counter in CVS and said that addicts often use in pairs. They make a deadly pact to use their drug of choice one at a time. If one person looks like they are overdosing, the other person will revive them with Narcan.

“It encourages people to use drugs at higher volumes,” Ramsay explained. “Last year, we had a couple in a trailer with three kids. In a garbage trailer. They had Narcan, and they had the same pact. But they were so high, one passed out while the other overdosed. The husband died.”

llen Westbrook and I were riding our bikes around the edge of Old Town, along the water, counting every damn bird we saw – every mockingbird, every gull, every dove. Because it was the 122nd annual Christmas Bird Count and you don’t mess with tradition.

This was the second year we’d done the CBC by bike, but it surely made sense, what with COVID and traffic and parking. Also, it was just easier to see and hear things while we were moving. Also, it was fun.

At the boat ramp at Truman Waterfront I scanned the pilings and piers, hoping to catch sight of some black skimmers. Ellen started eyeing a particular brown pelican.

Ellen does a lot for the Florida Keys Audubon Society, but she also does a lot for the Key West Wildlife Center, the folks who help sick and injured birds any way they can. She knows a pelican that isn’t quite right when she sees it.

The bird sat on the edge of the gray seawall. Ellen leaned her bike on its kickstand, and walked up to it. It did not fly away, which was a sign. It did turn and snap at her, which she knew was coming and easily dodged. Pelicans have sharp hooks on the ends of their bills. If you don’t know what you are doing you could get hurt, or worse, you could hurt the bird. But Ellen has grabbed pelicans a few thousand times.

She reached for the bird, it snapped again, she deftly dodged again. The snapping sounded like a large pair of chopsticks clacking. After several cycles, she gently wrapped hand around the bird’s bill and held it. It was like the kids’ game of Got Your Nose, only it worked. The pelican flapped some, but couldn’t go anywhere.

I called Tom Sweets from Key West Wildlife Center, who said he’d be there as soon as possible. So I sat down next to Ellen and the pelican and she told me about working with them at the clinic.

“The ones that come in like this – it’s their first migration. He is a pristine bird. There’s no cuts or scabs on his feet. His feathers are all perfect. They get this far and they just don’t have the energy to fish,” she said. “I could tell from over there that he wasn’t right. The way his head was. The way he was resting.”

“I don’t think he has a big parasite load. Otherwise I’d be covered with them by now. They don’t live on people. I mean, in 10 or 12 hours, they’re all dead,” she said. Then she looked at the bird.

“We’re just gonna sit here quietly and wait for somebody to come pick you up. You’re a beautiful bird. The very fact that I can just reach down and get you means that you are not working right,” she said.

“This is a boy. The male beaks are about two inches longer than the female. And he looks newly hatched. Every feather is just perfect. He’s not all scarred up like an adult would be. Remember

“The Velveteen Rabbit”? He’s not all torn up yet. The pieces aren’t falling off. His webbing is just uncut and perfect. You don’t see that in an adult.

“We feed them and offer them fish in the clinic. Once they start eating well and getting a little more active, we take them out to the aviary, to the pool room with other pelicans their same age. We put all the juveniles together. And then they eat communally. They get to this room where they can fly. Tom watches over them. And when they’re all flying really well, he’ll take four to six of ’em at once and release them as a group. He might be with us a month. I don’t know.

“The pelicans we get here, some of them are banded, and all the bands are from South Carolina. So we think that this group that we get here in the winter summers in South Carolina,” she said.

“We get calls all the time from people saying they see a pelican and he’s got monofilament trailing from around his feet or around his wing. As long as they can fly and get away from us we’ll never catch him. Tom will come down and try to bait them in. But until it interferes with their ability to feed themselves we can’t get them.

Once we get them, we can get the hooks out and staple up whatever tears they have. We got one last week that had monofilament wrapped tightly around the wing, to the point where it was interfering with circulation. We were worried it would lose the wing, but Peggy (Koontz) massages it several times a day and it seems to be coming back. It seems to be moving a little more normally. So we think he’s gonna survive this,” she said.

While we were sitting there, a police car passed and didn’t give a second glance at the woman holding the pelican by the bill. Ellen told me she’d come across another sick pelican a few weeks prior while walking the dog. She’d carried it a mile back to the car, and of all the people she passed, none of them said a word to the woman holding the four-foot-tall bird.

“When they’re weak they don’t struggle. A normal bird would not let this happen. We can tell they’re getting better when you pull them out of their crates to tube-feed them and they fight on the way out of the crate, they fight the feeding tube, they fight going back into the crate. And you’re like, ‘Good! You’re feeling like a normal bird. That’s what you should be doing.’ This guy? Look at him.

He’s too weak, too weak to fish,” she said.

We could see Tom pulling up in his pickup. Ellen gathered the pelican and held it like a plush toy she’d won at the carnival. After Tom loaded him in a crate to take back to the clinic we added it to the list, got on our bikes, and went off to count more birds.

Iconic bridge reopens exactly 110 years after the inauguration of Flagler‘s railroad

n arguably the most highly anticipated opening in recent memory, officials from Monroe County, the City of Marathon, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other community partners gathered together with the Pigeon Key Foundation and Friends of Old Seven to cut the ribbon and officially welcome the public back to the renovated Old Seven Mile Bridge. The reopening of the bridge, closed since July 2016, marks the early completion of a massive renovation project. The 30-year restoration and maintenance program was budgeted at $77 million, $41 million of which was spent to complete initial repairs.

Restoration work for the bridge that was once called the “eighth wonder of the world” included three coats of paint for a rust barrier, primer and top coat, replacement of thousands of rusted metal plates and rivets, and installation of a new aluminum rail system. To ensure structural integrity, hydraulic jacks were used to lift 10-foot sections of the bridge, cut out the original 1936 I-beams, and install brand new beams manufactured on site.

“I am absolutely elated,” said Bernard Spinrad, board president of Friends of Old Seven, the organization that united to lead the charge and save the old bridge. Thanking the county, the City of Marathon, and the DOT, Spinrad celebrated the “successful public-private partnership, the fruits of which we witness today.”

Marathon couple combines to drop 240 pounds in just over a year ALEX RICKERT

L

et’s be honest: more than a few of our readers are undoubtedly part of the annual January flood that takes over gyms, healthy meal prep companies, and the Exercise & Fitness section of Amazon. But after a few weeks, when the realization hits that “this is actually hard” and fried food and Snickers bars start to look mighty enticing again, many will look for the motivation to break through barriers and keep going.

For those in need of inspiration, look no further than Shelly and Gary Steinbrugge, a pair of Marathon bartenders and servers. In just over one year, the couple has combined to lose a total of 240 pounds. That’s not a typo.

The Steinbrugges have been Keys residents for eight years, but began their mission in the fall of 2020 after a few bouts of heat exhaustion gave Gary a wake-up call. “I wasn’t able to perform at my job, couldn’t do anything around the house, couldn’t even go out with my wife and enjoy the things she wanted to do,” he said.

“He was a shrimper for 20 years on the same boat, and I thought he was going to have a heart attack on me,”

said Shelly. “I begged him to change occupations and become a bartender.”

Shelly began walking a great deal as a way to avoid sitting around during the COVID-19 pandemic, but what started as a distraction soon turned into a steadfast habit. “Last year I did 961 miles in my workouts,” she said.

“Now, we each try to walk at least four miles a day.”

Shelly soon persuaded Gary to join her workout regimen and try a keto diet, a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan that attempts to use ketone bodies, produced by the liver from stored fat, as fuel. While many have touted success with the diet, conclusions about its risk and long-term efficacy still remain uncertain among scientists.

The couple eventually switched to more conventional and balanced clean eating, full of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and salads, mixed with intermittent fasting. As an increasingly popular weight loss method, intermittent fasting allows dieters to eat within a certain period during the day, while abstaining from most food during the other hours – for instance, an eighthour eating period, followed by a 16hour fast. Even with increased portions at each meal, most following this diet achieve an overall caloric intake reduction throughout the course of a day.

“I found my biggest success with intermittent fasting, eating once at midday,” said Gary. “When you first start doing it, you snack a little throughout the day to keep cravings down, but once your stomach shrinks down a little bit, you really don’t miss the intake. Most people think you’re sort of starving yourself, but you’re really not.”

A commitment to their diets and consistent exercise paid off, as Gary dropped from 330 pounds to 180 pounds in barely over a year. Shelly, meanwhile, shed 60 pounds from her initial weight of 200. “My stamina is through the roof,” said Gary. “I’d barely be able to walk in the door after work before, or I’d go snorkeling and be out of breath in 15 minutes. Now I could probably swim five miles and not think twice about it.” He said his insomnia and sleep apnea have also disappeared.

Though the Steinbrugges’ story is a far cry from ordinary weight loss tales, they are confident that others can achieve similar results through persistence and moderation.

“You’ve got to stay away from late night eating, and the main key is not to have bad food in the house,” said Gary. “When I used to go out drinking, I would come home and want to binge eat. But once you can get away from it, you don’t think about it, and you don’t want it any more.” Even with clean eating, however, the two stressed the importance of allowing “cheat days” to enjoy comfort foods as occasional treats.

As far as workouts go, the couple has found that consistency and small, measured progressions have been the most vital components of their exercise program. “Don’t try to jump in with both feet,” said Gary. “If you take on too much, you’ll burn out and discourage yourself. If you can go out and do one mile today, the next day try a mile and a half. Just find out what you’re capable of. You don’t have to absolutely kill yourself every day.”

“If you put your mind to something, you’ll get it done,” the pair said.

“You can say you want to, but if you really want to, you’ll do it.”

iting a need to prioritize his family and health, Marathon City Councilman Trevor Wofsey tendered his resignation to Marathon City Manager George Garrett, according to a statement obtained

by Keys Weekly on Jan. 7.

“The last few days have been some of the most difficult of my life. And while I have let many of my friends and constituents down, right now my initial priorities will be focused on my family and my health for the foreseeable future,” said Wofsey. “With this in mind, and in the best interest of the community I love and serve, I will be stepping down from the Marathon City Council effective immediately.

“I will seek out the help that I need while facing my mistakes and learning from them as I move forward. I am embarrassed that my actions have resulted in unwanted attention brought to my family. Because of this, please know that I am not looking for sympathy or understanding for my inexcusable actions, but I do ask the public to respect my family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

The resignation comes on the heels of Wofsey’s arrest on Jan. 3 for domestic battery. At about 10 p.m., a Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to Wofsey’s residence, where his wife Paige told the deputy she and her husband had been involved in an altercation.

“I’m sending out positive thoughts to Trevor, Paige and their children,” said Marathon Mayor John Bartus. “I hope they get the help and intervention that they need.”

“I hope that Trevor gets what he needs, and that his family is able to heal,” said city councilman Steve Cook.

Wofsey served on the Marathon City Council since November 2021, when he won one of two open seats along with Luis Gonzalez.

The council will now be tasked with appointing a new member to serve in Wofsey’s place. In accordance with the city’s charter, since the remainder of Wofsey’s term is more than 81 days, the appointed council member will serve until the city’s next election in November 2022, when he or she will be required to seek re-election by popular vote. The remaining council members will nominate and approve a replacement with a majority vote within 30 days of Wofsey’s resignation. The appointed individual must be a registered voter in the State of Florida and a resident of the City of Marathon.

At the regularly scheduled city council meeting on Jan. 11, the council voted to address the vacancy in a special call meeting set for Monday, Jan. 24 at noon at the Marathon City Hall.

In Other News: • FWC Capt. David Dipre addressed the Council following recent complaints that local jet ski (PWC) companies are illegally operating in shallow areas and at high speeds close to shore.

Dipre acknowledged that high turnover in most tour companies’ workforces may lead to some guides who are unaware of watercraft laws. Together with Williams, Dipre announced his intention to draft literature to better educate tour guides and other PWC operators so that they may later be held accountable for violations. Councilman Dan Zieg also suggested the installation of signs that “you simply cannot miss” in critical launch areas or other zones of concern.

• Garrett announced that the city officially closed on the purchase of the old Seven Mile Marina and is in the process of working with K2M Design Inc. to develop a site plan for the property.

• Code Compliance Director Ted Lozier delivered an update regarding the department’s continued efforts to curb compliance issues with vacation rentals, particularly regarding acceptable procedures for trash cans. Lozier noted that information will be sent to property owners and managers regarding these procedures, and new fliers will be attached to trash cans that remain out at the curb for too long after scheduled collections. He also noted that due to current collection schedules, several routes that are the subject of routine complaints only have one or two days per week when the entire route should be free of cans for scheduled pickups. The council stressed the importance of communicating with both property owners and managers in instances of non-compliance, while Gonzalez asked Lozier to strengthen the language used in the fliers. “I’d like to see the words ‘subject to citation’ removed. There will be no ‘subject.’ You’re going to receive a citation. And after three citations, you face the possibility of losing your license,” said Gonzalez.

• Zieg asked Lozier for an update regarding the city’s progress in registering and inspecting local taxicabs, adding that background checks for drivers must be paired with safety inspections of their vehicles.

• The council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the city to pursue purchase of a portion of Boot Key running along the shore of the island’s interior canals to be used as conservation property.

• City staff were directed to rework a resolution prohibiting trailers from being parked along the golf course side of Sombrero Boulevard and establishing designated areas for vehicle parking. Citing concerns about how the resolution could establish a precedent for other neighborhoods wanting similar treatment, the council elected to continue discussion of a reworked resolution at a later date, acknowledging that the problem had already been partially addressed by tagging unregistered and out of date vehicles and trailers along the street for eventual removal.

• In its second public hearing, the council unanimously voted to adopt an ordinance restricting Marathon’s building certification and recertification process to include only multistory structures.

our months have passed since early September, when a Marathon High School studentathlete wrote the words “white” and “colored” above two adjacent MHS water fountains, a reference to the days of racial segregation. The word “privilege” was later added under “white,” while “black” and “negro” were inscribed under “colored.”

At the Nov. 16 school board meeting, longtime resident and parent Stephanie Scuderi described the incident as “a symptom of a more pervasive problem.”

“There is a very real perception out there that matters of this nature get swept under the rug,” Scuderi said.

“Overcoming that perception is just one challenge for the school district.

We need to find a way to infuse a base level of kindness and respect.”

Superintendent Theresa Axford told the board the district was taking the situation “very seriously.” She described a program to be launched at MHS called, “We Don’t Talk Like That Here.”

“The intention,” Axford said, “is to avoid any kind of inappropriate speech that features bigotry, racial profiling, homophobia, name calling, all of those things that make people feel hurt or ridiculed.”

Fast forward to January 2022, and “We Don’t Talk Like That Here” has been expanded to all schools in the district, Axford told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 10. She also provided the following update on the program and others like it that target troubling behavior and produce more positive outcomes.

“I want people to know that these inexcusable actions have led to positive programs and changes in our schools,” Axford said. More from her statement follows: “We are still pursuing long-term solutions to a problem that unfortunately plagues our entire country. That problem is a lack of consideration for the feelings of others coupled with a lack of respect for basic human dignity.

The fact that everyone should be treated with respect, indeed even love, is not always prevalent, but we want this respect to be practiced in our schools by everyone. With that in mind, we have done many things to enhance our practices.

“Thanks to the creativity of the folks at Marathon High School, we created the slogan, ‘We don’t talk like that here’ to let students know that language has power and can be hurtful. Any speech that demeans anyone, based on race, ethnicity, personal characteristics, income, sexual preference – any or all these things — is not accepted. The consequences for this behavior can range from two- to 10day out-of-school suspensions. If the action is repeated, the student could face expulsion or alternative placement.

“Also, our DAPPs Team (District Action, Planning and Problem-Solving) added hate speech to our list of unacceptable behaviors. We’ve clearly defined it and detailed its associated consequences. ...

“Classroom Champions, which positions Olympic and professional athletes as mentors to students, is also helping with ‘We Don’t Talk Like That Here.’ In addition to their monthly video lessons and virtual chats about focus, decision-making and belonging, the athletes also agreed to produce public service announcements about the impacts of hurtful speech. One such PSA was made by Nate Richartz, a professional pole vaulter and Classroom Champion mentor, who was in Key West this past weekend for the Pole Vaulters in Paradise event.

“His PSA message emphasizes how it’s everyone’s job to make the day better for others rather than saying or doing something to make another’s day worse.

“We believe our students are getting better at understanding their responsibility to show others care and compassion in addressing one another. We know it takes a village to raise our children and we appreciate that the entire community can support the students as they learn this important lesson.”

he 41st Annual 7 Mile Bridge Run will be on April 2, 2022, and plans are to again run from the west end of the bridge to the east end. Registration is online only.

Registration opens on Tuesday, Feb. 1 beginning at 6 a.m. Anyone can register on this date, but only 1,500 entries are accepted and the field fills very quickly. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up their bib numbers that matches the address used to register.

Early registration opens for Monroe County residents only on Thursday, Jan. 27 beginning at 6 a.m. To qualify as a Monroe County resident, runners must use a Monroe County, Florida address that matches a photo ID. There are a limited number of entries available for locals only who register on this date. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up run numbers that has the same address used to register. If unsuccessful on Jan. 27, Monroe County residents may also try registering on Feb. 1.

Packet pickup at Faro Blanco will be on Friday, April 1 until 8 p.m. Runners need to be present with a photo ID that matches the registration address to pick up the runner’s packet.

Runsignup.com will again be used for registration, so creation of an account on the site will help expedite race registration. The registration fee will be $75.

Accommodations are made for Monroe County students to register at a discounted rate, courtesy of Keys Federal Credit Union, early in the month of January. Those interested can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Marathon Runners Club, PO Box 500110, Marathon, FL 33050, and a student registration form will be mailed to them.

These student-only registration forms are to be received back at the Post Office box no later than Jan. 21.

TRAUMA STAR SETS NEW RECORD IN 2021

T

he Trauma Star air ambulance helicopter program set a new record in 2021 for the number of annual flights flown with 1,383.

The yearly average is typically about 1,000 flights, so last year was a particularly busy and successful year for the professional pilots, nurses, paramedics and mechanics.

“The number of flights shows how important this program is for Monroe County,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “I want to thank our partners with Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Board of County Commissioners as well as everyone on staff who provide its top quality level of service every day.”

The Trauma Star program is administered by the Sheriff’s Office, which also staffs the pilots, the mechanics and the program director while the flight nurses and flight paramedics are staffed by Monroe County Fire Rescue.

Trauma Star is easily one of the busiest air ambulances services in the country, often flying four times the rate of other agencies. Trauma Star is also flying at greater distances than most other agencies due to the geography of the Florida Keys.

About one-third of the Trauma Star flights are for trauma alerts regarding incidents such as vehicle crashes; the remaining two-thirds are critical inter-facility flights for hospital patients in immediate need of a higher level of care.

There are three Trauma Star helicopters, which operate out of two bases: one at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport and a second at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.

The Trauma Star helicopters are capable of double-lifts and are often flying more than one patient, so the number of patients served last year was even greater than 1,400.

Trauma Star provides life support missions to Monroe County residents and property owners at no out-of-pocket expense.

A

caravan of nearly 40 cyclists made their way down sections of the Overseas Highway and across the Seven Mile Bridge for Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride this past weekend.

The annual ride is designed as an inspirational fundraiser for veterans recovering from both visible and invisible wounds of war in American military hospitals. Though several of the participants were missing one or more limbs due to previous combat injuries, they used specially adapted bicycles to travel as one unit.

The riders began in Key Largo on Friday and made their way to Key West

by Saturday, ending with a community ride around the Southernmost City with members of the public. On Sunday, the crew returned to Grassy Key for Dolphin Research Center’s Charles Evans Day, where each warrior was given the opportunity to swim with DRC’s dolphins. ­— Alex Rickert

Festival’s return was a booming success

S

heepdog demonstrations, the Highland Games, and some of the finest Celtic music and dance brought the Florida Keys Celtic Festival roaring back to life at the Marathon Community Park on Jan. 8 and 9. After a one-year COVID hiatus in 2021, the annual benefit for the Hammock House at St. Columba Episcopal Church found great success in its 2022 return.

“We had the best festival we’ve ever had,” said St. Columba’s Rev. Debra Maconaughey. “The crowd was so friendly and warm, and I can’t say enough good things about the entertainment.”

Maconaughey said attendees, entertainers, and vendors were all supportive of the serious underlying purpose behind such a fun festival.

“People received our message very warmly, and they’re happy to be helping with children in our community,” she said. “The vendors even gave us donations for the Hammock House because they had such a great festival and they heard our message.”

The weekend was such a success that next year’s dates have already been set for Jan. 7-8, 2023. ­— Alex Rickert

xquisite watercolor pieces by artist and 40-year Marathon resident Lynn Voit will be on display in the gallery of Marathon Community Theatre throughout its current main-stage run of “Sunset Village.” Beginning Thursday, Jan. 13, more than 100 pieces, including originals and giclees on watercolor paper and gallery wrapped canvas, will be available for viewing and purchase by MCT patrons.

As an ex-diver and pilot, Voit’s watercolor work captures her love of Keys waters and skies. Her work currently hangs in the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House, the new Fishermen’s Hospital, and many private collections.

T

he Monroe County Fire Rescue Fire Academy celebrated 25 new graduates in mid-December. The new graduates successfully completed the fourth “Hot Shots” Minimum Standards training program at the county-owned Joe London Fire Training Academy on Grassy Key. Since September, the graduates had more than 500 hours of intensive classroom and practical training and completed the program’s 17 performance objectives, allowing them to register for the State of Florida Firefighter I and II examination.

Of the graduates, 23 were qualified residents who had their $2,200 tuition fee waived as part of the “Hot Shots” program, which was approved and funded by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners in exchange for a three-year commitment to work or volunteer as a firefighter anywhere in the Florida Keys.

“I challenge you to be the ones who lead the charge for change and change for better and leave the fire service a better place than it was before you got there,” said Charlie Mather, Monroe County Fire Rescue training chief.

The previous three “Hot Shots” programs graduated 83 students, many of whom are now employed or volunteer in fire stations throughout the Florida Keys.

To be hired at Monroe County Fire Rescue, a candidate must also complete EMT training. More information about Monroe County Fire Academy and the “Hot Shots” program can be found at www. monroecounty-fl.gov/hotshots. A fifth “Hot Shots” program is scheduled to start in August 2022.

New microscope checks for bacteria in fox

i friends! Reef the fox here with this week’s “Reef’s Report.”

Did you notice I got a new column photo? New year, new me. I’m not a baby any more, so we needed an updated photo. I mean, I will always be the baby (even though Coral is younger than me).

I told you all last week I was going to let you know what the big surprise was that mom ordered REEF for us. Are you ready for it? It’s a friggin microscope.

THE FOX How boring. She spent $600 on a laboratory quality microscope with all the accessories needed to Reef is a red fox look at our poop at home. How silly. Mom said it’s that was saved a “game changer.” I tend to disagree. I would have from a fur farm.

She will especially be monitoring Coral’s since she still has the bacteria she did when she arrived from the fur farm. I mean, I guess it makes sense and all but geez, I really wanted something cool like a slide or a ball pit. Anything but a boring microscope that I can’t even pee on or play with. Oh well…

So there is something really cool going on Friday, Jan. 14 with Rainbow Reef Dive Center. Join Coral Restoration Foundation team divers for an afternoon restoring the local coral reefs. This is a unique opportunity to use your dive training as a tool to help create a healthier marine environment and to earn the Project Aware Coral Conservation specialty in the process. Required tools will be provided by CRF. Rental dive gear is available but not included. CRF dive trips will include any two of a variety of nursery maintenance dives, performing coral surveys for scientific databases, or outplanting coral. Upon completion of the dive event, each person will receive a Project Aware Coral Conservation card in the mail.

Another cool thing happening a little further south is the Florida Keys Astronomy Club and their Night Sky Program. The evening will start with an introduction and orientation. Enjoy learning about the night sky through a group activity and story telling. Then, prepare to be amazed as you use telescopes to view various celestial objects. This is happening at Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon. The program will begin 10 minutes before sunset and it is a free event with park admission.

hilarious spoof of The Villages in central Florida takes the stage at MCT this week. Directed by Jackie O’Neil, Michael Pressley Bobbitt’s “Sunset Village” opens on Thursday, Jan. 13. The show follows recent widow Edna Wilson (Joanne Zimmerman) as she moves into a retirement community and is swept into the underground drug and sex culture of a senior citizen Neverland.

The show runs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. until Feb. 12, with a special matinee on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m.

n Jan. 6, two new local authors commemorated their contributions to Allyson Roberts’ book “Behind the Power” with a book signing at Food for Thought in Marathon.

As a compilation of moving accounts from 13 women, including Marathon locals Karen Thomas and Erin Arnett, “Behind the Power” uses women’s voices to tell their deepest stories and inspire others to push through significant life challenges.

“We were free to tell whatever story we wanted to tell, but Allyson wanted to make sure that we weren’t hiding,” said Arnett. “We had to pull out one of our darkest secrets. It was an absolutely life altering experience.”

Though Arnett had never done any formal writing other than requirements for classes, she said she received all the support and encouragement she needed from Roberts and publisher Diana Needham.

“It’s very surreal to realize, ‘Hey, I’m on the back of a book,’” Arnett said.

“Behind the Power” currently holds an average review score of 4.9 out of 5 on Amazon. Arnett said the book’s warm reception has already led to plans for “Behind the Power, Part 2” next year with a mix of new and returning authors – and guess who will have a chapter?

Marathon library announces 2022 speaker series The Speaker Series is presented by the Marathon Branch of the Monroe County Public Library with the support of the Marathon Friends of the Library, on Thursdays, at 1:30 p.m., from Jan. 13 to Feb. 24. Attendees can mingle with the speakers while enjoying coffee and cookies.

On tap for the upcoming week: Frank Greenman and Daisy Papp. On Thursday, Jan. 13, Frank Greenman will share stories of the U.S. government's anti-Castro activities in the Florida Keys from 1959 to 1960. The anti-Castro Navy operated out of Greenman's parents’ marina on 15th Street in Marathon at the time. And on Thursday, Jan. 20, writer, artist and coach Daisy Papp talks about her book "The Formula for Finding True Love."

Boat show supports scholarships and missions On Jan. 21-23, Island Boat Show will have a large number of boats, auction items and vendors featuring a variety of merchandise. All proceeds of the Island Boat Show are going to support Keys student college scholarships and missions of the Island Community Church. Entry fee is $10, and a free parking and shuttle service will be provided. For more info, go to islandboatshow.com. The event will take place at Hawk’s Cay resort on Duck Key. Grassy Flats mangrove cleanup and volunteer appreciation party Kick off the New Year with CoastLove and Grassy Flats Adventure Park as they clean up the mangroves and coastal areas surrounding the park on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Grassy Flats, located at 59300 Overseas Hwy., Marathon, is one of the last true island gems in the Florida Keys, so they want to help keep it clean and healthy.

Sombrero Beach Run supports local nonprofit The Key West Southernmost Runners Club is hosting its 15th Annual Sombrero Beach Run from Friday, Jan 21 to Sunday, Jan. 23. The event is a fundraiser for KAIR, a non-profit organization seeking to serve those in Marathon and the Florida Keys who are in crisis. Friday night kicks off with a registration party at Sombrero Beach, while on Saturday, the race day, entertainment includes DJ Tito, the runners’ breakfast, after-race lunch, drinks, ice cold beer, custom T-shirts and raffles, also at Sombrero Beach. ‘Carnivale in the Keys’ will benefit Fishermen’s Hospital The “Carnivale in the Keys” party, which will benefit Fishermen’s Community Hospital, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. Attendees can expect Caribbean food and cocktails, Samba music and live and silent auctions. The event will be presented by the First Horizon Foundation, and tickets will cost $125. “Carnival in the Keys” will be held at Marathon’s Oceanfront Park, at 9805 Overseas Hwy. Scholarship available for marine science studies United Way of Collier and the Keys has opened its marine science educational advancement scholarship for Monroe County residents pursuing marine science related studies.

Applicants may apply for scholarships to support marine science related certificates as well as associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees at state colleges and universities engaged in Florida Keys reef restoration efforts. Award amounts to $5,000 depend on application ranking, educational track and other criteria. Scholarships may be used for tuition, books and materials, and/or room and board expenses, and are paid directly to the institution. Awardees are eligible and encouraged to apply annually beyond their first year of funding as they continue to pursue this educational track. The application period is now open and ends Feb. 15, 2022. John A. “Jack” Kornetti 1940-2021 John A. Kornetti, or Jack, was born on Feb. 15, 1940 and passed Dec. 11, 2021 surrounded by family.

Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Carmella, and his son, John V. Kornetti. Jack is survived by his daughter, Veronica M. Lowry and her husband, Steve Lowry; his son, Paul A. Kornetti, and his wife, Aimee Kornetti; his daughter, Stephanie A. Irvin, and her husband, Brett Irvin; along with his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Jack resided in Marathon for over 50 years, working for Southern Bell company for 33 years.

Jack was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed coaching little league football throughout the years. In retirement, he and his wife Carmella traveled the country in their fifth wheel, making many memories with family and friends along the way. He leaves behind many close friends and family whom he loved and supported through life. Jack was quite the character and will be dearly missed by all.

In the main living area, a coral wall fireplace accents the open, high ceilings and a customdesigned wet bar with vintage glass mural, liquor storage cabinet and grand elevator entrance.

Other unique features at Bali Hai include a 7,000-gallon saltwater pond with tropical fish, a tennis court, a 300-foot dock with two boat lifts — the larger being a 27,000-pound boat lift — and a custom-designed hot tub with lighted accents and a fire pit in the center.

“This home is perfectly situated in Islamorada and has something for everyone,” Martin said, “from the game room to the gym overlooking the ocean, the pool and spa, and the tennis court. Or you can just relax on the wide verandas and take in the sound of the waves.”

The Landaus were active in the community ever since their arrival to the Keys in 2010. sprang into action to assist the island chain with the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund in the Upper Keys. With help from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, grants were given to businesses and residents in need to rebuild and recover. Together with CFFK’s Emergency Relief Fund, more than $1.4 million was raised and distributed for Irma recovery in the Keys.

And during the pandemic, Jon and Julie Landau created the Landau Family COVID-19 Food Fund for the Upper Keys at CFFK to assist residents in dire need due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Landau Food Fund complements CFFK’s Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund that is already providing aid, including food and supplies, through Keys nonprofits to families, seniors, service workers and others who are out of work and affected by COVID-19’s economic impacts.

“What makes the Keys so special is the community of people that call this island chain their home,” Landau said when the fund was created in April 2020.

Real estate sales in the Florida Keys were hot in 2021. At $11 million, the private oceanside island known as Palm Island sold in March — the highest private island sale in the Keys — after spending two years on the market. In Marathon, a 3.6-acre location known as Palm Island sold for $11 million.

That same month, an $11.9-million home at 1150 Bulevar de Palmas in Marathon sold to a female oil and gas magnate from Texas.

The Landaus property could break a record for highest sale in the Florida Keys if sold for the asking price of $13.999 million.
