Renovation of the two-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon is complete following its closure in 2016. In total, the 30-year restoration and maintenance plan was budgeted at $77 million, $41 million of which was spent during initial repairs.

Publix has purchased Key West’s Searstown Plaza.

ublix has purchased the entire Searstown Plaza on Key West’s North Roosevelt Boulevard.

Will Langley, principal broker for Berkshire Hathaway Keys Real Estate and Knight & Gardner Realty in Key West, confirmed the sale to the Keys Weekly on Jan. 12, but could not comment on the sale price or Publix’s plans for the empty Sears store that closed in August 2020. The detached Sears Auto Center building is also still empty.

Miranda Lee, who handles Publix Leasing services in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties, did not immediately return calls to her office. The company’s website states, “The Publix Leasing Team is responsible for overseeing the leasing for more than 282 Publix-controlled shopping centers throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The team works diligently to create the optimum balance of local, regional and national tenants for each shopping center.

In addition to negotiating new leases for in-line tenants, the team is also responsible for renewing leases for current tenants and for ground leasing or selling outparcels to users such as banks and restaurants.”

Publix’s oldest Key West store anchors one end of the shopping center, with the vacant Sears at the opposite end.

The busy shopping center also includes Royal Furniture, Outback Steakhouse, TJ Maxx, Imagination Station toy store, Ramona’s Conch Creations, doctors’ offices and the local driver license office, which is operated by the Monroe County Tax Collector.

When asked why he’s running, Horan said, “It’s just the right time. My kids and my friends’ kids are all affected by what happens in the schools today.”

Horan has a 9-year-old daughter at Poinciana Elementary, a 4-year-old daughter in pre-kindergarten at The Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea and a 20-yearold daughter who graduated from Key West High School in 2020.

“My oldest graduated Key West High at the crux of COVID in 2020 and I’ve followed the psychological, emotional and academic toll it’s taking on our kids,” he said.

Horan is a partner in the Key West law firm of Horan Law LLC and the youngest son of David Paul Horan, managing partner in the firm. His practice includes landlord/ tenant law, land use, criminal law and business law. He grew up in Key West and is also a partner with Bill Lay in three Key West restaurants and a catering company.

His community involvement includes the Key West Military Affairs Committee, the Key West Chamber of Commerce board of directors and Take Stock in Children as a mentor.

His wife, Jessica, is his campaign treasurer.

Elsewhere in the school district, District 4 incumbent John Dick has filed for reelection in the Middle Keys and is thus far unopposed. District 5 incumbent Sue Woltanski is running for reelection against challenger Alexandria Suarez.

SOUTH FLORIDA SYMPHONY RETURNS

T

he South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), conducted by Key West native Sebrina María Alfonso, will perform the world premiere of composer — and Key West resident — John Gottsch’s “Princess Yurievskaya,” followed by Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” as part of its Masterworks III series. The concerts occur Wednesday, Jan. 19 in Fort Lauderdale; Thursday, Jan. 20 in Miami; and Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Tennessee Williams Theatre at the College of the Florida Keys. All shows start at 7:30 p.m.

Alfsonso told the Keys Weekly that she met Gottsch, a doctor at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and a lifelong composer, when he wrote to her and asked her to listen to one of his original scores, “Sunset,” which the symphony ultimately performed and recorded.

“I liked his music and he’s very passionate as a composer,” said Alfonso, who launched the symphony in her hometown 24 years ago. “With John’s current piece and Tchaikovsky’s in this upcoming performance, it’s going to be a beautiful, passionate concert. People are going to need a cigarette afterwards.”

“Gottsch’s ‘Princess Yurievskaya’ charts the love story about Tsar Alexander II and his mistress, Catherine Dolgorukova from their first meeting and eventual marriage to his assassination. The violin is the voice of the mistress and the cello is the tsar,” Alfonso said, adding that the musical narrative is full of exciting dances and torrid romance with evocative orchestral solos.

Gottsch was born in New Orleans, then moved to Florida with his family. He spent his youth in the lake country of the Sunshine State.

His explorations of Florida gave him an enduring love for its beauty and wildlife. He has been a lifelong composer and a number of his compositions reflect his deep appreciation of the outdoors. Gottsch, a full-time doctor, now splits his time between Baltimore and Key West.

The program concludes with a work Tchaikovsky considered his best. In the last few months of his life, Tchaikovsky composed his haunting Symphony No. 6 in B minor, which made its premiere just nine days before his death.

He called it “The Passionate Symphony,” using the equivalent Russian word that the French mistranslated into “Pathétique” (meaning “evoking pity”) after his death.

The symphony season runs through April 28; the orchestra will return to Key West in March, Alfonso said.

S

ome kids take for granted their twice-a-year dental cleaning and checkup, their choice of flavored toothpaste and a free new toothbrush.

But plenty of other kids have never visited a dentist, not for a cleaning, an exam or any necessary fillings.

The Florida Keys’ Area Health Education Center has changed all that and is now offering free pediatric dental care to every child in the Florida Keys with its new mobile dental unit.

The converted RV will travel the Keys and visit schools on a 10-week rotation, said AHEC Director and CEO Michael Cunningham during the Jan. 6 ribbon cutting at Gerald Adams Elementary School on Stock Island.

“But kids don’t have to wait until the unit shows up at their particular school,” he said. “They can come wherever it is and whenever.”

As of the ribbon-cutting, before the unit had even hit the road, Cunningham said he had “120 appointments scheduled and 30 phone calls to return for appointments.”

He also shared an alarming statistic: that 37% of children in the Keys who had never seen a dentist before needed work that was serious enough to send them to a children’s hospital in Miami.

The new service is being offered through a fundraising partnership with the Waypoint Foundation and the Smile Maker program.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay and County Commissioner Michelle Coldiron test drive the new dental equipment.

Services include dental exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, sealants and dental education. There will be a $10 fee for service and no other costs for parents.

The Florida Keys Area Health Education Center (AHEC), founded in 1990, provides community-based health education and medical services throughout Monroe County.

HOUSE SEAT SEES INCUMBENT, PLUS THREE CHALLENGERS

lorida State Rep. Jim Mooney ventured from the Southernmost district to Tallahassee for the start of a 60-day legislative session on Jan. 11.

Mooney enters the second year of his twoyear term that’s up for election, which three other candidates and he will vie for this November.

Mooney, a Republican from Islamorada, secured a primary victory in summer 2020.

Months later, he went on to beat Key West Democrat Clint Barras in the November general election.

The win brought big shoes to fill, with Holly Raschein terming out following eight consecutive years representing the Florida Keys and south Miami-Dade. Entering year two, Mooney will look to move appropriations to the finish line. They include funds for the Key West Glass Crusher, coral restoration at Mote Marine Laboratory and vessel pumpout in Monroe County, to name a few.

He’s proposing a bill that would allow certain coastal communities to establish a pilot program to regulate single-use plastics.

Mooney is also working through an anchoring bill with state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation that would provide 100 mooring sites within a mile of Key West Bight City Dock.

As for the 2022 election, Mooney told the Keys Weekly that his focus remains on the 19 appropriation requests and six bills he’s looking to get passed through the state legislature this session.

On the Republican side, Big Pine Key resident Robert Allen filed paperwork in December to challenge Mooney. A primary would take place Aug. 23.

“I’m going to do the job I was elected to do and let the chips fall where they fall,” Mooney said. “I think my actions, what I did last year and what I do this year, will speak for me.”

Alongside Rodriguez, Mooney was able to secure full funding for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act for the first time since it became law in 2016. The two legislators have bills in each chamber that ask for recurring funds for the program, which supports water quality projects and the purchase of land.

proved transportation bill that overturned Key West’s vote to limit the number and size of cruise ships coming to port. That vote of approval by state legislators last session — and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature of the bill — drew anti-corruption lawyer Adam Gentle to enter the race for House District 120.

A Democrat with a residence address on Big Coppitt Key, Gentle withdrew his bid for Florida’s 25th Congressional District and filed his paperwork for the House race on Jan. 4.

In explaining his decision, Gentle said in a release that lawmakers in Washington, D.C. weren’t the only ones ignoring the people. Legislators in Florida were doing the same. Gentle alludes to the Key West vote that was overturned some six months later by state legislators.

“Rather than represent our community’s interests in Tallahassee, Republican lawmakers have been rubbing elbows with special interests and have silenced their vote on local issues,” Gentle said. “As an anti-corruption lawyer, I have spent my legal career investigating and rooting out corruption, and I’ll go head-to-head with the corrupt players in Florida politics.”

Originally from Michigan, Gentle studied at Columbia University in New York and attended George Washington Law School.

He previously lived in Los Angeles, working with charitable organizations like The Young Americans, which promotes “understanding and goodwill among people throughout the world” through the performing arts.

Gentle said he’s running to fight for local business owners, veterans, the environment and anyone trying to get ahead.

Also running on the Democratic side is the former House District 120 and State Senate 39 candidate Daniel Horton-Diaz. The former district chief of staff to former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell filed his paperwork on Jan. 5.

A resident of Cutler Bay, Horton-Diaz lost in a 2020 Democratic primary in the Senate District 39 race to Rep. Javier Fernandez.

Horton-Diaz secured 41% of the vote with Fernandez garnering 59%. However, HortonDiaz secured 55% of the vote in Monroe County.

He lost in a 2016 House race to Republican Rep. Holly Raschein. He secured 43% while Raschein garnered 57% of the votes.

Going into his third run for office, Horton-Diaz feels confident between the connections he’s made in the district with voters. And he said he’s willing to do the work like he did in 2016 when he knocked on thousands of doors.

“In 2020, I had to figure out how I could reach people. What I ended up doing was drafting a letter to all the voters in the Keys who voted in the House District race in 2016 and still lived in Keys,” he said. “I had 8,000 envelopes, hand signed and stamped. That is one of the reasons I did well in Keys even though I wasn’t able to get out in the Keys.

It’s important for me that people know I care. This is not about grabbing power.”

Gentle and Horton-Diaz will vie to appear on the ballot under the Democratic line in an Aug. 23 primary.

The election comes as the legislature redraws districts from which Florida voters elect their state representatives, state senators and members of the U.S. House. It’s done after each decennial census to adjust for uneven growth in different parts of the state.

Per census data, Florida’s population increased from 18.8 million in 2010 to 21.5 million in 2020. Average number of people in each congressional district rose by 769,000, while the number of people in each of the 120 state House districts went up by almost 180,000. While House redistricting plans would adjust the district’s boundaries, it’ll still cover the Keys and south Miami-Dade.

our months have passed since early September, when a Marathon High School studentathlete wrote the words “white” and “colored” above two adjacent MHS water fountains, a reference to the days of racial segregation. The word “privilege” was later added under “white,” while “black” and “negro” were inscribed under “colored.”

At the Nov. 16 school board meeting, longtime resident and parent Stephanie Scuderi described the incident as “a symptom of a more pervasive problem.”

“There is a very real perception out there that matters of this nature get swept under the rug,” Scuderi said.

“Overcoming that perception is just one challenge for the school district.

We need to find a way to infuse a base level of kindness and respect.”

Superintendent Theresa Axford told the board the district was taking the situation “very seriously.” She described a program to be launched at MHS called, “We Don’t Talk Like That Here.”

“The intention,” Axford said, “is to avoid any kind of inappropriate speech that features bigotry, racial profiling, homophobia, name calling, all of those things that make people feel hurt or ridiculed.”

Fast forward to January 2022, and “We Don’t Talk Like That Here” has been expanded to all schools in the district, Axford told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 10. She also provided the following update on the program and others like it that target troubling behavior and produce more positive outcomes.

“I want people to know that these inexcusable actions have led to positive programs and changes in our schools,” Axford said. More from her statement follows: “We are still pursuing long-term solutions to a problem that unfortunately plagues our entire country. That problem is a lack of consideration for the feelings of others coupled with a

lack of respect for basic human dignity.

The fact that everyone should be treated with respect, indeed even love, is not always prevalent, but we want this respect to be practiced in our schools by everyone. With that in mind, we have done many things to enhance our practices.

“Thanks to the creativity of the folks at Marathon High School, we created the slogan, ‘We don’t talk like that here’ to let students know that language has power and can be hurtful. Any speech that demeans anyone, based on race, ethnicity, personal characteristics, income, sexual preference – any or all these things — is not accepted. The consequences for this behavior can range from two- to 10day out-of-school suspensions. If the action is repeated, the student could face expulsion or alternative placement.

“Also, our DAPPs Team (District Action, Planning and Problem-Solving) added hate speech to our list of unacceptable behaviors. We’ve clearly defined it and detailed its associated consequences. ...

“Classroom Champions, which positions Olympic and professional athletes as mentors to students, is also helping with ‘We Don’t Talk Like That Here.’ In addition to their monthly video lessons and virtual chats about focus, decision-making and belonging, the athletes also agreed to produce public service announcements about the impacts of hurtful speech. One such PSA was made by Nate Richartz, a professional pole vaulter and Classroom Champion mentor, who was in Key West this past weekend for the Pole Vaulters in Paradise event.

“His PSA message emphasizes how it’s everyone’s job to make the day better for others rather than saying or doing something to make another’s day worse.

“We believe our students are getting better at understanding their responsibility to show others care and compassion in addressing one another. We know it takes a village to raise our children and we appreciate that the entire community can support the students as they learn this important lesson.”

he Key West Kmart looks to be closing in mid-March, meeting the same demise that befell the other Florida Keys Kmart locations last year.

The Key West location, in the Key Plaza shopping center at 2928 N. Roosevelt Blvd., has not appeared on any recent store closing lists, but the parent company Transform SR Brands LLC has not published any such lists since last year and did not return calls from the Keys Weekly.

An online job listing posted Jan. 10 for the Key West Kmart is seeking people for “Fixture Removal,” and offering $18 per hour.

When asked whether anything was currently slated to replace the Key West Kmart after March 13, Will Langley, principal broker of Berkshire Hathaway Keys Real Estate and Knight & Gardner Realty in Key West, told the Keys Weekly that “we are looking into all options.”

Langley’s office handles the leases and tenants for that and other shopping centers on North Roosevelt Boulevard.

The current store has not had any inventory in its garden center for several months, and some departments of the store are forebodingly empty, but the store remains open its regular hours for now.

Tranformco has assigned its leases of former Kmarts elsewhere in the country to Target, which would be a welcome addition to the Key West shopping options, but nothing has been determined, decided or announced.

“The company was incorporated in 1899 as S.S. Kresge Corporation and renamed Kmart Corporation in 1977,” according to the company’s corporate history on FundingUniverse.com. “The first store with the Kmart name opened in 1962,” according to Discount Store News.

“At its peak in 1994, Kmart operated 2,486 stores globally, including 2,323 discount stores and Super Kmart Center locations in the United States,” says Wikipedia.

“From 2005 through 2019, Kmart was a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation. Since 2019, Kmart has been a subsidiary of Transform SR Brands LLC.” The Sears in Key West closed in August 2020.

COUNTY MOVES TO SETTLE SHARE IN $26.5 BILLION OPIOID LAWSUIT CASE WITH PURDUE PHARMA/ SACKLER FAMILY STILL PENDING

M

onroe County has moved to settle its part in a nationwide class-action lawsuit against distributors and a manufacturer of opioid pain pills. According to the December 2021 county commissioner meeting’s agenda paperwork, though the overall amount of the settlement is still being finalized, the current figure is approximately $26.5 billion. Of that amount, Monroe County would receive $206,000 annually, while the Keys’ five municipalities will get a total of $22,000 annually, over a period of about 17.5 years.

“On balance, the proposed settlement is a good deal for Monroe County,” said assistant county attorney Cynthia Hall. “It will provide approximately $206,000 per year to the county, and another $22,000 collectively to the five municipalities, over a period of 17.5 years, for use on substance abuse abatement. Monroe County would receive a slightly higher share than its pro rata share based on population.”

Another lawsuit that the county has against three other opioid manufacturers, including the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma — which made the highly addictive pill OxyContin — is still pending. That suit has been complicated by the fact that the three manufacturers have declared bankruptcy, Hall told Keys Weekly.

This news comes on the heels of recent nationwide headlines that declared the opioid epidemic led to the highest annual rate of drug-abuse death rates ever.

“In the 12-month period that ended in April, more than 100,000 Americans died of overdoses,” a Nov. 17, 2021, New York Times article said. “The figure marks the first time the number of overdose deaths in the United States has exceeded 100,000 a year, more than the toll of car crashes and gun fatalities combined. … The vast majority (was) caused by synthetic opioids.”

Florida and Monroe County are not immune to this trend. According to paperwork submitted by the county to receive a grant for its jail drug abuse treatment program, “Monroe County (has) drug abuse rates higher than both the state and national averages. The Drug Enforcement Agency noted in their 2019 Opioid Report that from 2006 to 2012 there were 30,791,325 prescription pain pills, enough for 60 pills per person per year, supplied to Monroe County.”

Attorney Hall explained that around 2018, the county decided to file a complaint — along with other cities, counties and states nationwide — against pain pill manufacturers and distributors after considering the effect the opioid epidemic had with its employees.

“We were talking about the expenditure of Monroe County’s health plan to treat opioid addictions, the amount of dollars and staff time necessary to treat people who were suffering from opioid problems, including the expenditure for Narcan,” said Hall.

Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is a nasal spray that can treat a narcotic overdose.

Hall emphasized that any money received from a settlement would not be an attempt to get money back that the county had already paid out of pocket to help opioid users. “Instead, it would be forward-facing dollars available for treatment programs, forward-looking things as opposed for things that happened in the past,” she said.

Once the settlement money is received, Hall said, the county would also like to arrange talks among the municipalities to make sure the money is split equitably for drug treatment programs within the Keys, since the county is getting the lion’s share of the settlement in the area.

The defendants in this lawsuit include three national distributors: Amerisource Bergen Corporation, which is partnered with Walgreens, among other entities; McKesson, which is partnered with CVS, among others; and Cardinal Health, which is partnered with CVS, among others. One manufacturer is also included in this suit: Johnson & Johnson, through its parent company Janssen.

Monroe County is also involved in another multi-district lawsuit, which is still tangled up in court due to the fact that the

three defendants have all declared bankruptcy: manufacturers Purdue Pharma, Insys and Mallinckrodt.

According to Reuters.com, a federal judge threw out a $4.5 billion settlement that legally shielded members of the Sackler family — who own Purdue Pharma — from future opioid lawsuits. In national news coverage, the Sackler family name has become synonymous with their product OxyContin, a pain pill that added fuel to the fire of the epidemic.

“There cannot be two forms of justice – one for ordinary Americans and a different one for billionaires,” Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a Dec. 17, 2021, Reuters.com article, in response to the settlement being thrown out. “I’m prepared to take this fight all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary, to ensure true accountability for the Sackler family.”

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey and his staff have borne witness to the local wreckage of the opioid epidemic. He pointed out doctors have over-prescribed opioid pain pills to patients, who would then become addicted.

Ramsay expressed concern that users of opioids see Narcan as a safety net and therefore feel more comfortable abusing drugs.

He pointed out that Narcan is available over the counter in CVS and said that addicts often use in pairs. They make a deadly pact to use their drug of choice one at a time. If one person looks like they are overdosing, the other person will revive them with Narcan.

“It encourages people to use drugs at higher volumes,” Ramsay explained. “Last year, we had a couple in a trailer with three kids. In a garbage trailer. They had Narcan, and they had the same pact. But they were so high, one passed out while the other overdosed. The husband died.”

caravan of nearly 40 cyclists made their way down sections of the Overseas Highway and across the Seven Mile Bridge for Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride this past weekend.

The annual ride is designed as an inspirational fundraiser for veterans recovering from both visible and invisible wounds of war in American military hospitals.

Though several of the participants were missing one or more limbs due to previous combat injuries, they used specially adapted bicycles to travel as one unit.

The riders began in Key Largo on Friday and made their way to Key West by Saturday, ending with a community ride around the Southernmost City with members of the public. or the first time ever, a professional Shakespeare performance will take place this month on the rooftop venue at The Studios of Key West.

Director Richard Ericson has reimagined (and shortened) the bard’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (one act, no intermission) as the first of many projects envisioned

by Ericson and his producing and life partner of 38 years, Louis Raymond. The pair formed Watson, Please Productions “to create and then sustain professional theater that brings a brighter future closer for both arts organizations and the communities they move, serve and ultimately transform,” Raymond said.

Rehearsals are ongoing for the upcoming Midsummer production, which has a limited eight- night run from Jan. 19-29. All shows are at 5:30 p.m. due to the early sunset.

Five actors will double and triple as Shakespeare’s characters in the production, Raymond said. Titania, Oberon, Puck, Bottom and Quince will be played by the company, who will also manipulate and give voice to eight puppet-creatures, ranging from life-size to diminutive, including an interactive flying Cupid.

“Multi-tasking will be the job, magic the result,” he said.

Ericson noted, “Working on Will’s 16thcentury comedy has been fun and it’s given me huge hope that we’ll not only survive our collective hurdles, but also find a little enchantment and self-knowledge along the way.

“When I first discussed ‘Midsummer’ with The Studios’ former board president Steve Kitsakos, I hadn’t read the play in years. I was thrilled to rediscover, among other things, Titania’s concerns for our planet, where the seasons have become so indistinguishable that we ‘know(s) not which is which.’

“Even so, Shakespeare’s play is a comedy, as if to reassure us that, even 500 years later, we too will live through our current angst to tell the tale again.

“Please laugh, please cry — and please discuss the show over good food and drink in the days to come. After all, it is for all time.”

Ericson and Raymond are producing this “Midsummer” in association with The Studios of Key West.

Reconceived and directed by Ericson, the 75-minute production is staged in the sky, with a vista across the rooftops of Old Town.

In addition to the quick-change cast of five – Vanessa McCaffrey, Lisa Hardwicke, Iain Wilcox, Gil Parker Jr. and Ray West – it will feature the creations of master puppet designer Jeff Goltz.

“Our goal with this production of ‘Midsummer’ is to treat audiences to something they’ve likely not seen before,” said Ericson, who has directed and produced plays and musicals on and off-Broadway, nationally and internationally for over 40 years. “Jeff Goltz is a gifted artist, and the puppets he’s created for this show perfectly embody the magic, passion and comedy needed to do justice to the poetry of the Bard.”

“I’ve so enjoyed the Key West theater scene over the past few years, and I’m excited to play a more active role with this production,” continued Ericson. “It’s an absolute joy to work with the island’s talent and to push the envelope in new and unexpected ways.”

he award-winning musical “Matilda” opens at the Waterfront Playhouse on Thursday, Jan. 13 and will play at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays through Jan. 29.

Inspired by the twisted genius of author Roald Dahl, who wrote “James and the Giant Peach” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the Tony Award-winning “Matilda the Musical” revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination, and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.

“Matilda” has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents, but impresses her teacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. he City of Key West invites the community to join in celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Nelson English Park at 300 Catherine Street.

The family-oriented celebration will include food, drink, games and inspiring speeches, all culminating in a march in honor of the civil rights pioneer.

King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work in the civil rights movement. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 for his dedication to this cause.

This nation’s elected leaders continue to be challenged to bring forward the realization of Dr. King’s dream that was unveiled 56 years ago, and to demonstrate that these leaders will work toward making the dream a reality by putting the needs of the people first.

ELLEN AND THE PELICAN MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

E

llen Westbrook and I were riding our bikes around the edge of Old Town, along the water, counting every damn bird we saw – every mockingbird, every gull, every dove. Because it was the 122nd annual Christmas Bird Count and you don’t mess with tradition.

This was the second year we’d done the CBC by bike, but it surely made sense, what with COVID and traffic and parking. Also, it was just easier to see and hear things while we were moving. Also, it was fun.

At the boat ramp at Truman Waterfront I scanned the pilings and piers, hoping to catch sight of some black skimmers. Ellen started eyeing a particular brown pelican.

Ellen does a lot for the Florida Keys Audubon Society, but she also does a lot for the Key West Wildlife Center, the folks who help sick and injured birds any way they can. She knows a pelican that isn’t quite right when she sees it.

The bird sat on the edge of the gray seawall. Ellen leaned her bike on its kickstand, and walked up to it. It did not fly away, which was a sign. It did turn and snap at her, which she knew was coming and easily dodged. Pelicans have sharp hooks on the ends of their bills. If you don’t know what you are doing you could get hurt, or worse, you could hurt the bird. But Ellen has grabbed pelicans a few thousand times.

She reached for the bird, it snapped again, she deftly dodged again. The snapping sounded like a large pair of chopsticks clacking. After several cycles, she gently wrapped hand around the bird’s bill and held it. It was like the kids’ game of Got Your Nose, only it worked. The pelican flapped some, but couldn’t go anywhere.

I called Tom Sweets from Key West Wildlife Center, who said he’d be there as soon as possible. So I sat down next to Ellen and the pelican and she told me about working with them at the clinic.

“The ones that come in like this – it’s their first migration. He is a pristine bird. There’s no cuts or scabs on his feet. His feathers are all perfect. They get this far and they just don’t have the energy to fish,” she said. “I could tell from over there that he wasn’t right. The way his head was. The way he was resting.”

“I don’t think he has a big parasite load. Otherwise I’d be covered with them by now. They don’t live on people. I mean, in 10 or 12 hours, they’re all dead,” she said. Then she looked at the bird.

“We’re just gonna sit here quietly and wait for somebody to come pick you up. You’re a beautiful bird. The very fact that I can just reach down and get you means that you are not working right,” she said.

“This is a boy. The male beaks are about two inches longer than the female. And he looks newly hatched. Every feather is just perfect. He’s not all scarred up like an adult would be. Remember

“The Velveteen Rabbit”? He’s not all torn up yet. The pieces aren’t falling off. His webbing is just uncut and perfect. You don’t see that in an adult.

“We feed them and offer them fish in the clinic. Once they start eating well and getting a little more active, we take them out to the aviary, to the pool room with other pelicans their same age. We put all the juveniles together. And then they eat communally. They get to this room where they can fly. Tom watches over them. And when they’re all flying really well, he’ll take four to six of ’em at once and release them as a group. He might be with us a month. I don’t know.

“The pelicans we get here, some of them are banded, and all the bands are from South Carolina. So we think that this group that we get here in the winter summers in South Carolina,” she said.

“We get calls all the time from people saying they see a pelican and he’s got monofilament trailing from around his feet or around his wing. As long as they can fly and get away from us we’ll never catch him. Tom will come down and try to bait them in. But until it interferes with their ability to feed themselves we can’t get them.

Once we get them, we can get the hooks out and staple up whatever tears they have. We got one last week that had monofilament wrapped tightly around the wing, to the point where it was interfering with circulation. We were worried it would lose the wing, but Peggy (Koontz) massages it several times a day and it seems to be coming back. It seems to be moving a little more normally. So we think he’s gonna survive this,” she said.

While we were sitting there, a police car passed and didn’t give a second glance at the woman holding the pelican by the bill. Ellen told me she’d come across another sick pelican a few weeks prior while walking the dog. She’d carried it a mile back to the car, and of all the people she passed, none of them said a word to the woman holding the four-foot-tall bird.

“When they’re weak they don’t struggle. A normal bird would not let this happen. We can tell they’re getting better when you pull them out of their crates to tube-feed them and they fight on the way out of the crate, they fight the feeding tube, they fight going back into the crate. And you’re like, ‘Good! You’re feeling like a normal bird. That’s what you should be doing.’ This guy? Look at him.

He’s too weak, too weak to fish,” she said.

We could see Tom pulling up in his pickup. Ellen gathered the pelican and held it like a plush toy she’d won at the carnival. After Tom loaded him in a crate to take back to the clinic we added it to the list, got on our bikes, and went off to count more birds.

irds aren’t real? That’s what a new Gen Z conspiracy theory, entirely made up by Peter McIndoe, 23, is claiming. And of course, his farcical misinformation movement is gaining momentum across the nation, spreading the word that our feathered friends are nothing more than “drone replicas created by big government to spy on humans.”

McIndoe recently made headlines again when he vomited during a live TV interview as yet another media stunt. (No word whether he fed his vomit to baby birds.)

We get it, this all sounds too absurd, even in the fertile grounds of today’s conspiracy-filled circus stage. But here’s the thing: the movement is getting actual buy-in from actual people who believe in an elaborate CIA scheme aimed at infiltrating the world with robotic birds.

We have questions, which we’re certain can be easily explained by the experts and scholars at Birds Aren’t Real University, but we feel compelled to ask nonetheless. So once again, like lost sheep looking for the enlightened few to guide us through this confusing and complicated world … we ask:

QUESTIONS FOR THE ‘BIRD’S AREN’T REAL’ MOVEMENT 10. If birds are robots that recharge on power lines and they poop on me, is it still good luck?

9. If all eggs are synthetically designed by the government, does this mean all eggs are “cage-free eggs” and if so, how much money have I wasted trying to impress people in the grocery store checkout line?

8. If birds are in fact robots, is Big Bird more real than real birds, or, robot birds? Is a human inside a fake bird more real because … never-mind.

Wtf?!

7. If birds aren’t real, why can’t we program parrots to say something more than “Polly want a cracker” or “I’m spying on you because an elaborate robot in a cage is a much more practical spy device than your computer, phone, Alexa speaker, credit card or door cams”?

6. What about the platypus, the semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal? We have lots of questions here, starting with,

why in the hell did you just not start with “platypuses aren’t real.” This would be more believable and makes for much better merchandise and apparel.

5. Who’s flying all of these robotic birds? And with such elaborate sophistication and technology, how the hell can they not figure out how to avoid glass buildings and windows?

4. Why does the same robot keep taking a dump on my car at the office? And can you please reprogram it to start doing it on Larry’s car from HR? 3. Does this mean all robots taste like chicken?

“Someone must know something I don’t know,” he said in pointing out that he favored Alabama. But when it came time to put on the mascot head to show his choice, it was the Georgia bulldog that he put on. I had picked Alabama. From what I saw and heard, the picks were about 50-50. I thought those who picked Alabama and I had good reason. We didn’t.

After a dull nearly three quarters, both teams came alive, but Georgia the most, winning the national championship at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium, 33-18.

The final score was deceiving. Alabama scored on a short pass from Heisman Trophywinning quarterback Bryce Young to Cameron Latu with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter.

That put the Tide up, 18-13.

That followed an Alabama recovery by Christian Harris who recovered a fumble on the 15-yard line on an attempted pass by Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV. “I wasn’t going to be the one who lost the game,” said Bennett to television announcer Holly Rowe as he and his team celebrated after the game.

And he wasn’t.

After being sacked two minutes after the touchdown, Bennett completed a 40-yard pass to Adonai Mitchell in the end zone for a 19-18 Georgia lead.

After Alabama went four-andout and with 3:33 to go, Bennett was hit while throwing, but still completed a 19-yard pass in the end zone to Brock Bowers. That made the score 26-18, but had people (including me) thinking about Alabama scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion to tie the game and force overtime.

But that wasn’t to be as Georgia scored another touchdown. Alabama did move the ball down the field, but with 54 seconds left, Georgia freshman Kelee Ringo intercepted and Georgia coach Kirby Smart became the second former Nick Saban assistant (along with Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher) to defeat their mentor. Along with other teams, Smart and Saban were together with the Miami Dolphins in 2006.

Comparing Bennett to the well-decorated Young was not much of a comparison although both went into the game with 13 victories and one loss. Bennett had walked on to Georgia without a scholarship. Not getting much notice, he dropped out of Georgia and went to a junior college. He then drifted back to Georgia, eventually getting a scholarship, but no assurance of playing time. As players dropped out of the picture, Bennett moved up and became the starting quarterback who took his team to the national championship.

Before the late-game excitement, Alabama’s Will Reichard had made three field goals and had one blocked, while Georgia’s Jack Podlesny had kicked two. Those made the score 9-6, Alabama, at the half. “There seems to be a little tendency to be careful,” said ESPN announcer Kirk Herbstreit. That both teams did, making for a boring first half at best.

Community supports those who sacrificed their lives Dear Editor: Thanks to your superb news coverage, an extremely large and spirited crowd assembled at our VFW Post 10211 in Key Largo to welcome the Wounded Warrior bicyclists as they disembarked from their bus to begin their cycling trek through the Florida Keys.

Except for COVID cancellations, we’ve maintained the Wounded Warrior Ride for 18 consecutive years. The masterful management and coordination of this event by our State Attorney Dennis Ward and Sheriff Rick Ramsay are significant reasons why it survives.

Dunkin Donuts donated deliciously made bagels, donuts and coffee for all support personnel. Sheriff’s and FWC officers, along with Key Largo and Islamorada Fire and Rescue, protected and assisted the injured riders on their ride. EMT and first responder ambulances were at the ready to lend additional care for these disabled cyclists.

Crews from the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative and Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority displayed the flag and manned watering sites to keep everyone hydrated and alert. Citizens lined the highway with their signs, salutes and outpouring of love. It was indeed a cathartic and healing experience for these combat-wounded warriors.

Coral Shores High School and Plantation Key School students, teachers, staff and parents were beyond awesome. It was breathtaking to witness and experience the bountiful expressions of love and gratitude they shared with these war veterans. American Legion Islamorada Post 145 members were majestically brilliant, as they painstakingly delivered an authentic military vehicle for the high school students and staff to enjoy.

TRAUMA STAR SETS NEW RECORD IN 2021

NEW LOOK FOR KEY WEST’S REEF RELIEF? BIGHT BOARD WILL DISCUSS RENOVATIONS

T

he Trauma Star air ambulance helicopter program set a new record in 2021 for the number of annual flights flown with 1,383.

The yearly average is typically about 1,000 flights, so last year was a particularly busy and successful year for the professional pilots, nurses, paramedics and mechanics.

“The number of flights shows how important this program is for Monroe County,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

“I want to thank our partners with Monroe County Fire Rescue and the Board of County Commissioners as well as everyone on staff who provide its top quality level of service every day.”

The Trauma Star program is administered by the Sheriff’s Office, which also staffs the pilots, the mechanics and the program director while the flight nurses and flight paramedics are staffed by Monroe County Fire Rescue.

Trauma Star is easily one of the busiest air ambulances services in the country, often flying four times the rate of other agencies. Trauma Star is also flying at greater distances than most other agencies due to the geography of the Florida Keys.

About one-third of the Trauma Star flights are for trauma alerts regarding incidents such as vehicle crashes; the remaining two-thirds are critical inter-facility flights for hospital patients in immediate need of a higher level of care.

There are three Trauma Star helicopters, which operate out of two bases: one at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport and a second at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.

The Trauma Star helicopters are capable of doublelifts and are often flying more than one patient, so the number of patients served last year was even greater than 1,400.

Trauma Star provides life support missions to Monroe County residents and property owners at no out-ofpocket expense.

he city-owned property at 631 Greene St., which includes the Reef Relief environmental center’s headquarters, is in line for a huge makeover that the Key West Bight Board discussed after presstime at its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

The Bight Board also received an update about the

struggling and now unrecognizable Schooner Western Union, the flagship of Key West and the state of Florida.

The schooner is a shell of its former self, and has been out of the water at Robbie’s Marina on Stock Island since April 2020.

The Schooner Western Union Preservation Society continues to try to raise funds for its needed preservation.

slamorada Village Manager Gregory J. Oravec has resigned just six months after he was unanimously approved by the Village Council.

The Keys Weekly obtained Oravec’s resignation letter that was dated Jan. 10 and addressed to Mayor Pete Bacheler, the village council and staff informing them of his decision to resign. In the letter, Oravec expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work with “some incredible people” and live in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

“After reflecting on the last six months and considering the year ahead, I have come to believe that the Village Council would be better served by another Village Manager. Accordingly, this letter serves to tender my resignation and inform you that my last day will be no later than March 31, 2022. Please know that I am open to negotiating alternate terms and timing,” Oravec said in the letter. “I look forward to helping you however I can during the transition and to the Village continuing its journey to realize its greater potential.”

A June 2, 2021 meeting saw council members approve the hiring of Oravec, 46. A nationwide search for Islamorada’s manager commenced following the resignation of Seth Lawless in summer 2020 due to health reasons. Maria Bassett, current finance director, took the helm on an interim basis.

Initial recruitment of candidates saw just over 80 applicants for the position.

From 12 candidates, the list of finalists for Islamorada’s next manager then narrowed to five during a May 19, 2021 special meeting of the village council. Andrea Agha, Guillermo Olmedillo, Oravec, Terry Suggs and David Baird were selected as finalists.

In his pitch to the dais, Oravec said he wanted to share his passion with a community he called a “special place” and an “incredible waterfront village.”

With a July 1 start date, Oravec’s contract provided an annual salary of $169,500 and relocation reimbursement of $13,500. He also received a housing allowance of $2,000 per month, which started during his third month of employment. Other benefits include sick leave and health care that’s the same for all village employees.

In his time as manager, Oravec tackled everything from getting more properties connected to the public wastewater system, to regulating the Fills area and initiating public meetings.

Oravec had recently made several hires, including Daniel Gulizio as village planning director and Katie Atkins as public information officer and executive assistant. Oravec, in his remarks to council, apologized to the two new employees for resigning so soon after their hiring.

Before accepting his resignation, Oravec told the council he lost his appetite for the political dynamics that go with the job.

“For me, they become more than just isolated moments in time. They rob the job of its joy,” he said. “Given these dynamics are playing against the backdrop of a difficult move, which has my family split between two places, I’ve come to the regrettable conclusion that I cannot muster the deep reservoir of enthusiasm and passion to serve you, this council.

“I believe time is the most valuable thing a person can spend and the thing most of us spend most of our discretionary time on is at work. Given the preciousness of this time, we should not just be satisfied with our work, we should never really think of it as a ‘grind,’” he continued. “We owe it to ourselves, those we love and those we serve to actively enjoy it and, dare I say, love it.”

It’s unknown who will take over as acting village manager as the dais will again embark on another search. Maria Bassett, finance director and deputy village manager, served as acting village manager from the time of Lawless’ resignation to the hiring of Oravec.

Mayor Pete Bacheler thanked Oravec for his service.

AND WE’RE BACK! Old Seven Mile Bridge reopens exactly 110 years after Henry Flagler inaugurated the original Overseas Railroad

I

n arguably the most highly anticipated opening in recent memory, officials from Monroe County, the City of Marathon, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other community partners gathered together with the Pigeon Key Foundation and Friends of Old Seven to cut the ribbon and officially welcome the public back to the renovated Old Seven Mile Bridge. The reopening of the bridge, closed since July 2016, marks the early completion of a massive renovation project. The 30year restoration and maintenance program was budgeted at $77 million, $41 million of which was spent to complete initial repairs.

Restoration work for the bridge that was once called the “eighth wonder of the world” included three coats of paint for a rust barrier, primer and top coat, replacement of thousands of rusted metal plates and rivets, and installation of a new aluminum rail system. To ensure structural integrity, hydraulic jacks were used to lift 10-foot sections of the bridge, cut out the original 1936 I-beams, and install brand new beams manufactured on site.

“I am absolutely elated,” said Bernard Spinrad, board president of Friends of Old Seven, the organization that united to lead the charge and save the old bridge.

Thanking the county, the City of Marathon, and the DOT, Spinrad celebrated the “successful publicprivate partnership, the fruits of which we witness today.”

he producer of “Titanic” and “Avatar” Jon Landau and his wife, Julie, who have more than 350 unique varieties of plants on almost four acres of property, are putting their Islamorada residence on the market.

Situated on the oceanside along the Old Highway on Plantation Key, the asking price is $13.999 million for the property Bali Hai. The Landaus took the name from the 1947 book “Tales of the South Pacific” by James Michener.

With six bedrooms and five bathrooms, the main residence also features wooden beamed ceilings, Brazilian honey teakwood flooring and 18-foot tall Ipe walnut wood milled in Manaus, Brazil.

In the main living area, a coral wall fireplace accents the open, high ceilings and a custom-designed wet bar with vintage glass mural, liquor storage cabinet and grand elevator entrance.

Other unique features at Bali Hai include a 7,000-gallon saltwater pond with tropical fish, a tennis court, a 300-foot dock with two boat lifts — the larger being a 27,000-pound boat lift — and a custom-designed hot tub with lighted accents and a fire pit in the center.

“This home is perfectly situated in Islamorada and has something for everyone,” Martin said, “from the game room to the gym overlooking the ocean, the pool and spa, and the tennis court. Or you can just relax on the wide verandas and take in the sound of the waves.”

The Landaus were active in the community ever since their arrival to the Keys in 2010. They sponsored everything from Islamorada’s Fourth of July festivities to the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce’s holiday fest at Founders Park each year. They’re also big supporters of Mariners Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Upper Keys Humane Society and Coral Shores High School.

Following Hurricane Irma, the Landaus sprang into action to assist the island chain with the Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund in the Upper Keys. With help from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, grants were given to businesses and residents in need to rebuild and recover. Together with CFFK’s Emergency Relief Fund, more than $1.4 million was raised and distributed for Irma recovery in the Keys.

And during the pandemic, Jon and Julie Landau created the Landau Family COVID-19 Food Fund for the Upper Keys at CFFK to assist

residents in dire need due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Landau Food Fund complements CFFK’s Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund that is already providing aid, including food and supplies, through Keys nonprofits to families, seniors, service workers and others who are out of work and affected by COVID-19’s economic impacts.

“What makes the Keys so special is the community of people that call this island chain their home,” Landau said when the fund was created in April 2020.

Real estate sales in the Florida Keys were hot in 2021. At $11 million, the private oceanside island known as Palm Island sold in March — the highest private island sale in the Keys — after spending two years on the market. In Marathon, a 3.6-acre location known as Palm Island sold for $11 million. That same month, an $11.9-million home at 1150 Bulevar de Palmas in Marathon sold to a female oil and gas magnate from Texas.

The Landaus property could break a record for highest sale in the Florida Keys if sold for the asking price of $13.999 million.

7 MILE BRIDGE RUN ANNOUNCES RACE & REGISTRATION DATES

he 41st Annual 7 Mile Bridge Run will be on April 2, 2022, and plans are to again run from the west end of the bridge to the east end. Registration is online only.

Registration opens on Tuesday, Feb. 1 beginning at 6 a.m. Anyone can register on this date, but only 1,500 entries are accepted and the field fills very quickly. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up their bib numbers that matches the address used to register.

Early registration opens for Monroe County residents only on Thursday, Jan. 27 beginning at 6 a.m. To qualify as a Monroe County resident, runners must use a Monroe County, Florida address that matches a photo ID. There are a limited number of entries available for locals only who register on this date. Runners must show a photo ID when picking up run numbers that has the same address used to register. If unsuccessful on Jan. 27, Monroe County residents may also try registering on Feb. 1.

Packet pickup at Faro Blanco will be on Friday, April 1 until 8 p.m. Runners need to be present with a photo ID that matches the registration address to pick up the runner’s packet.

Runsignup.com will again be used for registration, so creation of an account on the site will help expedite race registration. The registration fee will be $75.

Accommodations are made for Monroe County students to register at a discounted rate, courtesy of Keys Federal Credit Union, early in the month of January. Those interested can send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Marathon Runners Club, PO Box 500110, Marathon, FL 33050, and a student registration form will be mailed to them. These student-only registration forms are to be received back at the Post Office box no later than Jan. 21.

The staff at the National Hurricane Center, completely exhausted because they’re already on the “T” name (Tobias), issues a release stating that they are so happy they gave up the Greek alphabet to be used as COVID variant identifiers. In an amazing coincidence, the Upsilon variant spreads through the local chicken population.

October: The election season really heats up as positions from city council to senator are up for grabs. New Jersey resident Dr. Oz stakes his claim for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania (I am not making this up). Network television programming is canceled as stations choose to air campaign commercials exclusively — “All Politics,

All The Time.” Cable news outlets feature multiple-member panels of talking heads who bloviate incessantly about issues of which they have limited knowledge. (Actually, this is not a new development.) And Halloween becomes the second scariest date in 2022, falling second to Election Day. November: As Hurricane Walter wreaks havoc on the shipping lanes in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Election Day comes and goes. Candidates win.

Candidates lose. (If you think I’m going to predict election outcomes, well…) The world goes on through the butthurt of election loss. Millions of viewers turn on their TVs for the first time since summer, finally free of election advertising. Keys residents beg for their first cold front. And the Psi variant of COVID spreads like chicken pox through the local iguana population.

December: The holidays can’t come quickly enough for a nation in need of a little Peace on Earth. Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is named Best Christmas Song of All Time. Mariah Carey, as well as the estates of Bing Crosby and Nat “King” Cole, file suit. In a related story, Wham’s “Last Christmas” is named Worst Christmas Song of All Time. As the year draws to a close, the Omega variant of COVID lurks on the horizon… ***** It’s very exciting that the Old Seven Mile Bridge is now open!
