Florida gas prices are declining again after surging in the past two weeks. According to AAA, the state average declined almost 2 cents per gallon last weekend to $3.30 per gallon. That's 10 cents more than this time last year. In 2022, gas prices reached a new record high of $4.89 per gallon in June.

oncerns and questions from the public remain over a grocery store project and the transformation of a current clothing store to a gas station and convenience store in the Upper Keys.

A Jan. 4 virtual community meeting on the proposed Publix supermarket and liquor store in Tavernier heard another round of resounding concerns from a number of residents. The meeting was required before Monroe County’s Planning Commission takes up a proposed amendment to the county’s land use district map and county land development regulations to allow for what’s being called a Tavernier Key Commercial Retail Overlay District. The meeting followed a November county Development Review Committee gathering, which noted inconsistencies with the project and Tavernier’s Liveable CommuniKeys Plan.

The county planning commission would recommend approval to the five Monroe County Commissioners, who would have the final say in the matter. If approved, it would allow for construction of up to 70,000 square feet of nonresidential space at the now-defunct Cemex property near Mile Marker 92.5, oceanside. Current code only allows for 10,000 square feet of nonresidential floor area.

Current property owners are Singletary Concrete Products and Cemex Construction Materials Florida. The developers, known as the Blackstone Group Tavernier 925 LLC, want to build a 64,000-square-foot structure for Publix, which is larger than stores in Key Largo and Islamorada.

“We still have not seen any evidence in documentation as it currently stands that the applicant has responded to the previous staff comments on addressing concerns with Liveable plan and the Tavernier Community,” said Al Aldrich, who’s a member of the Tavernier Community Association. “I hope that prior to this being allowed to go to the planning commission that we hear from the applicant as to how they will try to address that.”

A level 3 traffic study is required to be supplied by the applicant. Jess Goodall, who’s representing the applicant, said they’re addressing county comments.

Per an October county staff report, a 64,000-square-foot Publix would generate more than 6,200 daily trips.

Add in the 86 affordable housing units the developer plans to build, and those daily trips increase to 6,780.

Local resident Chris Sante acknowledged that the traffic flow would be greatly affected in an area that saw the Florida Department of Transportation install a traffic light at the Burton Drive intersection.

“There’s no way to get 6,800 cars in there,” he said.

Oliver Kraut, of Tavernier’s Ocean Shores, criticized the project that, he said, would help the Cemex property

value increase at the expense of residents in the area whose home values would plummet.

“If you listen in general and ask the question, is this right or is this wrong, just in a simple form like that, if you listen to all the people speaking who own property who have made an investment, all of them say it’s wrong,” he said. “All of them will be negatively impacted, whether it’s traffic (or) whether it’s environmental. They’re all negatively impacted.”

A date to consider the proposed amendment by the planning commission hasn’t been set.

Residents attending a Jan. 5 community meeting regarding a major conditional use request to develop the 7,400-square-foot Anthony’s Clothing Store at MM 98.2 into a 4,736-squarefoot 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store were met with opposition.

Many locals speaking during the virtual meeting felt that there wasn’t a need for another gas station. Owners Danie and Archie Barry are proposing 10 fueling stations and a boat fueling station to go along with a 24/7 convenience store.

irtyBoat Captain Kit Carson Mobley was all but 15 minutes away from calling an end to a swordfish outing roughly 26 miles off shore with six on board. The waves were stacking up and daylight was dwindling.

A prayer from crewman and Mobley’s friend, Jack Philip, of Washington State, however, subsequently led to a bite and a fight from hell for mate Jose Boza. An initial surfacing by the swordfish had those on the boat believing the swordfish was in the 200- to 300-pound range. Two-and-half-hours later, the DirtyBoat out of Robbies of Islamorada had a 460-plus-pound swordfish on an Islamorada Swordfish Baits rod, with gear that included a Lindgren-Pitman SV-1200 electric reel from Tackle Center in Islamorada.

“We were tight,” said Mobley, who was watching it unfold behind the wheel. “We didn’t know how big the fish was until we got close. She was swimming up and down and not fighting us just yet. She didn’t fight until she was 800 feet off the boat.”

Several harpoon shots ensued once the swordfish came close to the boat. When the head appeared,

close to a 500-pound fish. Mate John McConnell hit the swordfish with the harpoon as they fought for another 30 minutes.

“The harpoon line was flying out the bucket like crazy. She was a mean fish,” Mobley said. “She’d come up and fight the waves. She was going with the current. We were drifting with that fish for 3 miles.”

It took the men aboard roughly seven minutes to bring the swordfish onto the boat. Then the high-fiving and a celebration began.

“It was a gift,” Mobley said. “We were thankful.”

With the swordfish caught, the DirtyBoat embarked on a threehour ride to Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada to weigh the monster swordfish. It came in at 463 pounds.

“I’ll be lucky if I see a fish like that again,” Mobley said. “It just goes to show there are some true sea monsters.”

Some 400 pounds of meat was cut off the swordfish — 114 pounds of it shipped back to Washington State for Philip, family and friends to enjoy. Artist Lisa Lee Herman, owner of Islamorada’s Gallery of the Arts, made several prints of the rail, while Gray’s Taxidermy was making a mount.

able,” a juvenile great white shark, “pinged” in the waters off of Layton on Jan. 3 at 5:26 a.m. Locals and shark enthusiasts are excited.

“How lucky we are!” a Facebook post in the popular “What’s Happening in the Florida Keys” group captioned a picture of Sable along with a screenshot of her latest satellite ping in offshore waters. “Keep an eye out for her approximate 11-foot length and 1,000 pounds,” the poster added, with happy face and shark emojis.

“Nothing says healthy reef like sharks!” another local responded.

White sharks are among some of our favorite “snowbird” species migrating south for the winter. They’re likely circling the Keys on their way to the Gulf. Patrick Rice, chief science and research officer at the College of the Florida Keys, previously told the Keys Weekly about how white sharks, like other migratory species, follow the movement of their food.

“These sharks are following tuna and marlins that are going to the Gulf of Mexico to spawn,” he said. “They follow the big migratory species: bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna and blue marlin.”

These are larger pelagic fish that live in the open ocean rather than at the bottom of the sea. Sharks like Sable typically travel offshore, along the edge of the continental shelf in water depths over 3,000 feet.

OCEARCH, a research group using advanced tracking technology to follow species like sharks, first encountered Sable during a September 2021 expedition in Nova Scotia. Her namesake is Sable Island National Park Reserve, about 180 miles offshore of Halifax, Nova Scotia – near where she was tagged.

Researchers used a hydraulic lift aboard OCEARCH’s research vessel to bring Sable on deck, where they took length and weight measurements as well as blood samples and vital signs.

At the time of tagging in September 2021, she measured 10 feet, 6 inches and 807 pounds. Then, the team fitted Sable’s dorsal fin with a smart position or temperature (SPOT) tag, which sends a satellite signal with location information whenever the tag breaks the water’s surface. The ping data then shows up real-time on OCEARCH’s website, which is available to the public.

The tag should last five years and may provide new data about white shark migrations. Sable was the 76th shark sampled, tagged and released as part of OCEARCH’s Northwest Atlantic white shark study.

The highly specialized tracking data pool that groups like OCEARCH are creating helps scientists better understand seasonal migration patterns.

In 2021, OCEARCH’s chief scientist Robert Hueter noted that Sable likely spends a few months “cruising around Canadian waters” feeding on highenergy foods like seals before coming south in the early part of winter.

“People do not have to worry.

People should rejoice that the white sharks are beginning to return,” Hueter said. “Their numbers are beginning to come back up after many years of declines and our worries about the disruption to the marine ecosystem.

They’re coming back.”

WARRANT ISSUED FOR OUT-OF-STATE JUVENILE WHO MADE THREATS AGAINST KEYS SCHOOL JIM McCARTHY

A

threat made against Key Largo School on Jan. 3 — just a day before kids returned from holiday break — has led to an arrest warrant issued against an out-ofstate juvenile.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a warrant was obtained the next day against an 11-year-old who’s reportedly responsible for the threats that were made on social media against the school. The student was reportedly from New Jersey. Local law enforcement worked with out-of-state authorities and the Monroe County

State Attorney’s Office on the case.

“I want to thank my team and our partners at the school district and the State Attorney’s Office for their hard work in quickly resolving this case,” Sheriff Rick Ramsay said. “It’s essential that we work together to make sure these cases are handled quickly and effectively every time.”

Key Largo School and other Keys schools saw an increased law enforcement presence in view of the threat.

Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward told the Keys Weekly that social media threats made against schools are “one of the most serious threats we have in these times.” As for the punishment that the juvenile might see, Ward said it’s a lot different than it is dealing with older kids.

We have to figure out what direction we need to go from here,” Ward said. “Sheriff Ramsay and I take these threats very, very seriously.”

Last May, Coral Shores students reported to staff that violence rumors were circulating via social media. Officials said the threat was unsubstantiated. Another threat was reported roughly a week later as seniors were preparing for a parade to mark the end to their high school careers.

Hialeah Gardens man riding on a jet ski died after a center console with two people on board collided with him near Key Largo on Jan. 2.

An accident report by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission states that the two-vessel crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. at Blackwater Sound, west of Moon Bay Condominium. The 25-foot Skeeter, with a Key Largo man and Pembroke Pines woman on board, was traveling south parallel to the eastern shoreline of Blackwater Sound as the Yamaha jet ski was traveling east to shore near Rowell’s Waterfront Park. The two vessels ended up colliding, the boat’s starboard bow striking the jet ski’s bow and throwing all three individuals into the water.

The operator of the center console, later identified as Anthony Abate, 36, could be seen in a video taken by a bystander hopping onto a jet ski to chase down his unmanned, running boat in an attempt to prevent the boat from hitting anyone in the water. He eventually got onto his boat and picked up his female passenger, later identified as Marilynn Gonzalez, 28. Both were uninjured in the collision.

The man on the jet ski, Adolfo Rodriguez Aguilera, 39, was recovered by good Samaritans nearby. He was transported to Mariners Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

FWC was joined on scene by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe County Fire Rescue. An investigation is ongoing, according to the FWC report.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” said Arielle Callender, FWC spokeswoman.

A PIRATE ATTACK ACCOUNT Key West-based Navy squadron had run-ins off Cuba coast

His latest book, “Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, Volume 1,” shares fascinating glimpses into the rich and sometimes surprising histories of the Florida Keys.

P

irate attacks on American ships sailing in foreign waters were nothing unusual in 1822.

The persistent problem was one of the reasons President James Monroe, on March 3, 1819, signed “An Act to Protect the Commerce of the United States, and Crimes of Piracy.”

The legislation allowed the U.S. Navy to establish the West Indies Squadron, a specialized force to combat both piracy and the slave trade, which the Navy did with great efficiency once Commodore David Porter was given command.

Even if documented instances of pirates are hard to connect to the Florida Keys, the history of the West Indies Squadron will always be connected to the island chain. Porter, the second to command the famed unit, made Key West his headquarters. In a general order issued from the USS Peacock on April 6, 1823, Porter wrote: “A Salute of 17 guns is to be find (fired) at 8 o’clock this morning from the Battery in front of the Town, and the American Ensign is to be hoisted at the Flag Staff… The Town is hereafter to be called Allenton, and the Battery, Thompsons Battery.”

The name Thompsons was chosen for the depot to honor the Secretary of the Navy, Smith Thompson. The name for the town developing on Key West, Allenton, was a tribute to a fallen member of the West Indies Squadron, Lt. William H. Allen, commander of the U.S. schooner Alligator. The Alligator was one of five swift ships of war built to arm the anti-piracy squadron. In March 1821, the schooner was commissioned. The events that led to the death of Lt. Allen on Nov. 9, 1822, resulted from a series of piratical attacks off the coast of Cuba.

One beginning to this story dates back to Sept. 18, when the master of the Ann Maria, home port New York, was navigating the waters near Cuba.

The schooner was carrying, among other things, a cargo of salt. Before refrigeration, salt was a valuable commodity used as a preservative for food staples like pork, fish and other proteins. The schooner was also carrying at least one passenger, Mrs. Powell of Wilmington. On Sept. 18, Somers, the master of the Ann Maria, spied a schooner sailing out from the coast of Guajaba, Cuba. The schooner had a lead-colored bottom, a 12-pound cannon mid-ship, and four carronades (smaller cannons). Its intent was piracy.

Somers attempted to sail away from the pirates, but all he did was run the ship up on a shoal. With the Ann Maria compromised, the pirates boarded the schooner, secured the master, crew and Mrs. Powell, and went into business for themselves by selling the cargo of salt at cut-rate prices to ships sailing past. After three days, all the salt was gone and the pirates were seemingly done with the Ann Maria. Being the gentlemen that they were, the pirates worked to refloat the schooner. Once they set the ship free and sent the schooner on its way, the pirate captain suggested to Somers that he could restore his stocks with fresh cargo at the port of Matanzas.

Somers took the pirate’s advice, sailed to Matanzas, and took on stores of molasses and sugar before sailing away from the port and right into the waiting arms of the pirate captain and crew they had just escaped. The ploy was a classic. A thief breaks in and steals all the valuables that can be sacked. The victim calls the authorities,

a report is made, and an insurance company sends a check to replace the victim’s losses. Once the jewelry and other valuables are replaced, the thief returns to rob the joint all over again.

Shortly after sailing away from Matanzas, the pirates stopped the Ann Maria again. Instead of selling the cargo to passing ships, they brought the schooner and her crew to a small cove near Point Hicacos. According to Lt. Dale of the Alligator, part of the West Indies Squadron, the cove was located “about forty miles to the windward of this place.” “This place” was Matanzas, where the Alligator had arrived on Nov. 8.

The Alligator would not remain in port long. The master of the schooner Iris boarded and relayed to the Alligator’s commander, Lt. Allen that pirates were holding his ship and others for ransom. If he did not deliver $6,000 ($7,000 in some accounts) to the pirates the following day, his crew would be killed and his ship burned. Apparently, the pirates treated the good men aboard the Iris differently than the scoundrels who engaged the master and crew of the Ann Maria.

The fate of the crew of the Iris and how that story became entangled with the U.S. Schooner Alligator will be explored in next week’s edition of Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli.

The incumbent directors of the four districts have decided to stand for re-election. In the event only one qualified member from a district for each position is so nominated, that member shall be declared elected.

Elections may be conducted on the designated election date, by mail ballot, and/or by electronic means.

The notice of election and the election ballot and informational materials shall be mailed to each and every member residing or doing business in the district not less than fifteen (15) days prior to the election date.

All ballots returned by mail must be received by the Cooperative or the Cooperative’s contracted third-party election management provider no later than one day prior to the official election date.

Directors elected at the district elections shall serve for a period of three years and will take office at the first regular or special meeting to be held on or after Saturday, April 8, 2023.

Members interested in becoming candidates and placing their names in nomination for membership on the Board of Directors are hereby notified of the qualifications and election procedures pre scribed by the Bylaws of Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Association, Inc. A candidate for director must be a member of FKEC and a bona fide resident of the district he/she represents and have 12 months of residency in the area served by the Cooperative. The candidate must not be a minor. No candidate may in any way be employed by or have a substantial financial interest in a competing enterprise or a business selling electric energy or supplies to FKEC, or be the incumbent for an elective public office in connection with which a salary or compensation is paid.

Candidates must submit a nominating petition with fifteen (15) or more signatures of members residing in the voting district no less than forty-five (45) days prior to the date of the district election specified above.

Nominating petitions for District 1 must be received by FKEC by Noon on Monday, January 30, 2023, petitions for District 2 must be received by FKEC by Noon on Monday, January 30, 2023, petitions for District 3 must be received by FKEC by Noon on Monday, January 30, 2023, and, petitions for District 4 must be received by FKEC by Noon on Monday, January 30, 2023. PREP SOCCER SQUADS GEARING UP FOR DISTRICT PLAY With district playoff action beginning Wednesday, Jan. 25, Keys soccer teams are working hard to solidify their placements.

The state playoff brackets are generated via power rankings rather than head-to-head district matchups, and top-seeded teams enjoy an easier opponent and home field advantage.

GIRLS The Lady Conchs of Key West had two road trips in a row with two different outcomes. On Jan. 6, they lost 5-0 against South Florida HEAT. The following day, they enjoyed a 3-0 win against Gulliver. Striker Kathryn Smith had two goals and Jen Perloff had one in the match.

The Lady Fins traveled to Westwood Christian School on Jan. 5, beating the Warriors 3-0. Rain Banks, Sara Strama and Hannah Davis each scored one goal. The following night, Coral Shores put a damper on the Fins’ senior night, handing them a 6-2 loss at home. Both Marathon goals were scored

by Rain Banks, while Kylie McDaniel logged 17 saves in goal.

Coral Shores goalkeeper Katelyn Gilman kept the Lady ’Canes in the game with six saves while the offense took care of business. Kai Redruello scored two goals in the game and assisted Sophia Jans on her goal. Ashley Jans, Delany Donnelly and Amber Ender had the other three goals, with Ender’s assisted by Izzy Malloggi.

BOYS Key West had a big week on the pitch. On Jan. 4 they traveled to Marathon, where they defeated the Fins 9-1. Yoni Gvili and Loubins Fleuridor had hat tricks in the game while Wyatt Gibbons scored two and Daniel Quiche scored one. On Jan. 7, Gvili had another hat trick and Fleuridor scored one in a 4-2 victory over Bolles High School, which made the trip from Jacksonville to play the Conchs.

In Marathon’s game against Key West, Oscar Cardona had the lone goal. Cardona struck again with a goal on Jan. 6 when the Dolphins played Miami Country Day at home.

Henry Herrera added one for the Fins in an attempt to salvage the team’s senior night, but Marathon ran out of time, losing to the Spartans 3-2.

Coral Shores played Jan. 4 at Gulliver, losing 8-0. They face Key West in their next match on Jan. 17 at home.

Senior, Coral Shores Soccer Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Gilman has been putting in the work for Coral Shores this season.

The ’Canes have six wins so far this season, with five shutouts.

Gilman most recently kept Coral Shores in the driver’s seat against county rival Marathon, saving six shots on goal and preserving the win for the Hurricanes. Coach Zach Owens praised his keeper, saying, “Katelyn played a great game. She directs the ball on the field, and she keeps us in the game with her play and attitude.”

For her positive attitude and fantastic game play, Katelyn Gilman is this week’s Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

THE 2022 KEYS WEEKLY ALL-KEYS VOLLEYBALL TEAM Last fall’s athletes representing Key West, Marathon and Coral Shores made strong showings in their competition across South Florida. Key West went 11-11, reaching the FHSAA District 16 4A semifinals in one of the most talented districts in the state. Marathon’s record was 2-17 on the season. Their District 16 3A run ended in round one against neighboring Coral Shores, which went on to play in the District 3A finals, earning runner-up status. Like Key West, Coral Shores had an even record, finishing the season 8-8. All three teams fielded talented athletes, and the Keys Weekly Newspapers are proud to recognize our 2022 All-Keys Volleyball Team.

ANNIE SCEPKOVA Junior, Key West In her first year playing varsity for the Conchs, Scepkova was deadly at the net, registering 24 blocks and 91 kills this season.

MVP EMIRI ICHIJO Senior, Key West Key West’s libero was equally important on offense and defense. Ichijo had 47 aces and 22 kills to complement her astounding 327 digs this season for the Conchs.

REESE HAGGARD Sophomore, Key West Haggard stepped up to the varsity level this season and made an immediate positive impact for the Conchs. She had near-perfect serving with a 96.4% service percentage as well as 31 aces and 94 digs this season.

SAMANTHA VENTIMIGLIA Senior, Key West Playing outside hitter, Ventimiglia recorded 178 kills and 36 aces. Her service percentage was an incredible 94.8%. The Conch senior also had 10 blocks and 234 digs, making her a true asset offensively and defensively.

Outside hitter Elsie Warwick had 143 kills for the Conchs this season as well as 38 aces, 179 digs and three blocks, making her a force for Key West this year.

Kailee led the Hurricanes in aces, chalking up 44 this season. A fierce competitor who rarely allowed the ball to hit the floor, Reinoso had 148 digs, making her a key cog in the Coral Shores defense.

Bailey was instrumental for her team this season, bringing positive energy to each practice and game. Described as everyone’s biggest cheerleader, Bailey pumped up her team whether she was on the court or bench. “Whenever she is not there, it is instantly noticeable that she’s missing because the atmosphere is not the same,” said Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle.

“Reese stepped up for us as a libero this year. She worked hard and earned her spot out on the court. If a ball was dropping, Reese made sure that she was there to get it.” – Marathon coach Kelley Cruz

Mandozzi led her team in serve rating, hit percentage, serve reception, digs (157) and kills (96) and was second in aces (43), making her an asset in every aspect of the game. Over the course of the season, she played multiple positions without complaint, helping her team wherever they needed it. “Mandozzi puts in the work during the off season, complimenting her talent and making her a force on the court,” said Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle.

Quick was a playmaker for the ’Canes this season, coming up with big plays when her team needed them most.

She amassed 12 blocks and 43 kills and had a serve rating of 2.15, making her deadly both at the net and the service line. “Quick showed great improvement this season, working hard to be a great player and teammate,” said Hurricanes coach Sam Ovalle.

Playing middle hitter for the Dolphins, Hewlett brought a depth of knowledge to her team. “If there were any points in time during practices or games where she could spread knowledge, she would,” said Marathon coach Kelley Cruz.

Marathon’s outside hitter Elena Eubank was the youngest player for the Fins. “She is an all-around great player and natural leader,” said Marathon coach Kelley Cruz. “When faced with opposition, she worked through it and always came out the other side with a smile.”

orty wounded military vets got on bikes and rode the Florida Keys from Key Largo to Key West beginning on Jan. 6. The annual Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride began at Key Largo VFW Post 10211, where local residents waited to bid the veterans a cheerful journey south. They rode roughly 12 miles to the Old Highway in Tavernier, where students lined both sides of the road, waving flags, clapping and offering words of encouragement. After a ride from the Marathon fire station across the picturesque Seven Mile Bridge later on Jan. 6 and a trip in Key West from the U.S. Naval Air Station to Bayview Park on Jan. 7, warriors closed their journey with a reunion with dolphins at Grassy Key’s Dolphin Research Center on Jan. 8.

I

n 1973, a small group of sailing enthusiasts hoisted their sails in the Upper Keys, testing their skills in grueling oceanside regattas as well as offering instruction for novice sailors.

Fifty years later, a lot has changed at the Upper Keys Sailing Club, and a lot has remained the same.

“The kind of racing we did in those days was just tooth and nail; everybody was doing everything, “ recalled Marlin Simon, an early sailing club member who held the leadership role of commodore in 1975.

“It was just adrenaline shooting out,” he added, describing the exhilarating regattas of the time.

Today, that same cutting-edge competitiveness and adrenaline rush can be felt on the bayside waters of Buttonwood Sound.

However, to members, the Upper Keys Sailing Club is about more than just racing; it is about community.

“We danced, we had fun, we had parties on the beach,” recalled Bob Sandifer. He and his late wife, Cris, joined the Upper Keys Sailing Club in 1986. Recently, 94-year-old Sandifer reminisced about the times had while racing his 24-foot O’Day named Mischief.

“Good times and good racing,” he said with a smile.

The 50th year celebration kicked off with a weekend of festivities starting on Jan. 6,

with current and past members gathering at the club along Ocean Bay Drive in Key Largo.

They reconnected over their love of sailing; many spent time flipping through old photo albums. On Jan. 8, decorated sailboats of all sizes held a procession for a blessing of the fleet.

Lifelong sailors Richard and Sharon Slosar hopped on a friend’s sailboat for the ceremony. They started coming to the Upper Keys Sailing Club in 1983 when they lived in Marathon and became members in 1987.

Back then, to become a regular member you had to live on the north side of the Channel 5 Bridge.

“We actually moved so we could become full-time members here,” Sharon said.

The late Ken Sorensen sponsored the Slosars’ membership. Sorensen was a state representative and a founding club member.

“It was like being in heaven for sailors,” said Richard of the time well spent inside the clubhouse. “When you walked in here you could talk about racing, you could talk about cruising, what size anchor was on your sailboat. It was just a conversation paradise back in those days and we were hooked,” he said.

What started out as a few friends getting together for some friendly sailing competition 50 years ago has grown into a sailing club of almost 300 members. The club offers a youth sailing program for children ages 8-18. Sailing lessons for adults are also available.

I know that might sound a bit dramatic, but I am dramatic and will only allow Dr. Michael Claudio to trim my nails without causing harm to anyone. If my mother tries to perform a routine nail trim on me it is a knock-down, drag-out scream-filled nightmare.

What can I say – I am who I am.

Louie and Penny fox also had a big day out at the vet that same day. Louie got his ears cleaned and Penny got a full annual exam, which included a complete blood workup. It’s very important that mom does that every year for all of us foxes so she and our veterinarians can monitor any changes in blood level or organ function. As I have mentioned before, foxes that are bred for fashion can develop an undesirable assortment of health issues as we get older, since we were not meant to live long (sad) on a fur farm.

Events around town: The Upper Keys Humane Society will be having its annual gala on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at Coconut Cove Resort in Islamorada. Break out your best Hawaiian attire and join them for this year’s luau-themed event. The “Paw-lynesian Paw-ty” will be on the beach under the palms at Coconut Cove Resort at MM 84. Tickets are $100 per person and that includes two free drinks, or $200 per person and that is an open-bar ticket. The evening includes dinner, dancing, DJ Wood playing our favorite tunes as well as live and silent auction items.

‘THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN ISLAMORADA’ Community garden offers classes and supports food bank

he weather couldn’t be beat during the morning of Jan. 10 at the community garden behind the First Baptist Church of Islamorada. The temperature was just shy of jacket-worthy, and nary a cloud interrupted the blue sky. And Keys chefs would have rubbed their hands with glee at the produce that was spilling over the sides of the plots: sturdy kales, crisp lettuces, tender micro-greens, sweet tomatoes and flavorful herbs stood ready to be harvested.

“Welcome to the best kept secret in Islamorada,” garden organizer and volunteer Ed Kattel told a visitor. “It’s a perfect day for it, isn’t it?”

Indeed it was. And the future is bright: In addition to continuing to supply the Islamorada Food Bank, the garden is offering a class this Saturday, Jan. 14. Kattel and certified master gardener Bill Albury will be teaching beginners how to start growing vegetables. The duo claim that with their tips, class attendees can have sprouts for a salad within two days of planting.

Even an amateur couldn’t screw it up.

And Kattel clearly has a knack for teaching. He led a visitor through the simple steps of planting vegetables: go to Home Depot, buy a fold-out table and some containers, soil and fertilizer. And that’s it. Just place the containers on a table in your backyard, and don’t forget to water.

He said that instead of buying a bag of romaine for five bucks at Publix, aspiring farmers can be out in the sun and enjoying the pleasure of learning a new skill. And with inflation and food security issues, the time is ideal for everyone to learn how to grow food.

“Look here,” he said enthusiastically, walking over to his personal plot of 17 different lettuces. “Place your hands in the soil. That’s the joy of gardening. It’s grounding.”

“Ed has done a fantastic job with the garden,” said Steve Olsen. The pastor helps run the church’s community ministry and the food bank with his wife, Nancy. “He takes a teaching approach. Work one season with Ed, and you can be a good farmer.”

Kattel demurs to the compliment, emphasizing the community behind the garden and praising his co-teacher, Bill Albury. “He has been growing food at his Keys home since the 1970s.”

And that’s the thing — maintaining a vegetable garden in the Keys can be tough, between foraging iguanas and the heat.

“I love thinking that in the Florida Keys we can grow this,” said garden volunteer Kristi Mikula. “It is possible. And it tastes good. Last night I made a salad, and my husband was eating it and was like, ‘This is so good.’ I said, ‘That’s because it was in the dirt an hour ago.’”

At the class, Kattel and Albury will discuss growing sprouts as well as micro-greens, which can be ready for a salad in eight to 10 days.

Also on the agenda: Learning about compost, what grows here in the Keys, when to grow, what things to watch out for and how to deal with pests.

The class and a viewing of the garden is intended to be a celebration of First Baptist Church of Islamorada, which has hosted the community garden project over the past 10 years. The fellowship provided the space, a tool shed and an eco-friendly water source for gardeners so that they can water their crops.

Back at the garden on Tuesday, it was 9:30 a.m. Though the opening time for the food bank wasn’t until 10 a.m., guests were already

lining up to receive the produce to stock their kitchens. The volunteers quickly piled heads of lettuce into a wheelbarrow and took it to the bank within the church.

“Fresh vegetables are harder to come by than dry goods,” Nancy said of the food bank’s guests. “So they are so excited to see fresh greens. We love when all the people of the Keys work together to meet a need.”

The food bank hours are every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 to 6 p.m. at the church, which is located at 81201 Overseas Highway, oceanside. For more information about the bank, call 305-306-7842.

The beginning vegetable-gardening classes will be this Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., also at the church. Students should park in the large parking lot in front of the food bank and walk through the playground to the community garden. The cost is free, though donations are encouraged.

A two-day music festival that once graced the grounds at Founders Park has moved to the iconic beer garden at Florida Keys Brewing Co. (FKBC).

Islamorada Community Entertainment and FKBC joined forces to bring three days of music with five bands beginning Friday, Jan. 13, as part of the annual Baygrass Bluegrass music festival.

Grandpa’s Cough Medicine’s blazing tempos and acoustic wizardry will kick off the weekend of toe-tapping music at 6 p.m..

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Asheville, North Carolina-based group The Knotty G’s will grace the stage with their Americana music at 1 p.m. Gill and Chuck Knott are the core that provide captivating ballads and satisfying songs. Micah & the Barstool Sailors will follow with a variety of jams at 6 p.m.

The band includes Micah Gardner on guitar/vocals, the funky bass master Cliff Stutts and the kicking dynamic drums of Andre Serafini.

Baygrass beats continue on Sunday, Jan. 15 with the South Floridabased Low Ground at 1 p.m. and The Grass is Dead at 6 p.m. Low Ground is heavily influenced by Americana,

bluegrass, folk, rock, blues, jazz and jam style, while The Grass is Dead provides rock-spiced tunes with bluegrass instruments.

With the conclusion of Baygrass Bluegrass comes the Beats on the Bay music series kickoff on Friday, Jan. 20 at Founders Park Amphitheater. He’s a five-time Billboard reggae album chart topper, and he was named iTunes’ best new singer-songwriter.

“A traveler and sailor at heart; his lyrics and sound are deep reflections of the reggae roots soul and consciousness of the Caribbean culture in which he grew up,” reads Mishka’s bio. He emerged on the music scene in London in 1999 with his debut album influenced by Brit record label Creation Records. Since then, he has toured throughout Europe, the Americas, Japan and Australia.

ivers heading out on the Upper Keys waters experienced some windy days last week, but it ended with amazingly calm conditions. It was so calm that we were able to do two night dives.

Our dive shop had the pleasure of taking out a group of firefighters from Myrtle Beach, North Carolina, as well as a private night dive with a couple from Michigan. Both nights gave us some spectacular sunsets and the diving was loaded with nighttime critters. The thought of dipping below the surface at night might sound crazy to some. But the mystery is its allure.

Although you’ve been scuba diving at a site many times before, at night you drop into a whole new world and watch it come to life under the glow of your dive light. The scene changes as day creatures retire and nocturnal creatures emerge. Some of our favorite common nighttime critters include octopuses, eels, lobsters out hunting and turtles — lots and lots

After the dive was over and they were heading back in, you could hear them stating how incredible it was or why were they ever worried, or my favorite, “That was so incredible, I don’t know if I’ll dive in the day again.”

One of the amazing things about scuba diving is that there are many specialty dives you can do. Whether you like to drift dive, wreck dive, spearfish or night dive, the sport offers you so many options. If night diving is one of those you’d like to try, contact your local dive shop and set one up. Be prepared for amazing sunsets, incredible creature interaction and a festive boat ride back.
