Archaeologists recently unearthed a mummy in Peru. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the young adult was buried on Peru’s central coast some 800 years ago. The mummy rested underground until earlier this year, when archaeologists stumbled onto a tomb during an excavation, reports Marco Aquino for Reuters. Researchers hope to study the tomb and its occupant to learn more about the Indigenous communities that lived along Peru’s coastline prior to the Inca Empire’s rise.

racking of vacation rental violations, acquisition of the 7 Mile Marina, unsafe subdivision of rental mobile homes and discussion of beach and boat ramp parking and launch fees were the main topics of discussion at Marathon’s City Council meeting on Dec. 15.

Following complaints on Grassy Key during the weekend prior, Marathon Mayor John Bartus began the evening with a discussion of the city’s progress in tracking vacation rental violations in relation to Marathon’s “three strikes” provision. Focusing on areas of prominent concern, including Grassy Key, Coco Plum Drive, Sombrero Beach Road and Aviation Blvd., the council reiterated the need to stay on top of violators and promptly cite infractions. “I’m trying to figure out what we can do to better follow this up,” said Bartus. “What are we doing to track this so that if owners do receive a third strike, they have their license suspended?”

“We are going to aggressively go after citations,” responded city manager George Garrett, referencing a more assertive policy as a way to reduce the delay between violations and corresponding consequences when compared to appearances before the code board.

“They’ll get one warning, and the next time, they’ll receive a citation,” said code director Ted Lozier. “After three strikes, you’re out for 12 months and you have to go before the special magistrate.”

Later in the meeting, the council unanimously voted to approve the purchase of 7 Mile Marina, also known as Salty’s, on the western end of Marathon’s gulf shore. “We’re going to get the maximum parking out of it, and we’re certainly going to look at repairing docks immediately, putting in channel markers, getting the building back in shape, and doing that under the umbrella of our marina and its

enterprise fund,” said Garrett.

“The timing is great with the old 7 Mile Bridge opening early next year,” responded Bartus. “The building, the seawall and the pilings are all in really good shape, and there’s not a whole lot we need to do to make this a really wonderful thing.”

Following repeated requests from concerned citizens, Garrett also addressed reports of internally subdivided rental RVs in several Keys mobile home parks. “At the end of the day, it’s a life safety issue, and what we’ve heard about some of these splits is that there may be limited access from any bedroom to the outside,” he said.

Garrett and city attorney Steve Williams said the city’s ability to act on these reports is largely hindered

by Florida’s building code. “The short version of it is that we’re looking at it as a home, but the law looks at it as a vehicle,” said Williams. “It would be like (building official) Noe (Martinez) inspecting the inside of a Greyhound bus. We can stop construction if we catch them and red tag them, but once it’s done, there’s nothing we can do about it. The units are initially certified when they leave the factory for complying with rules and regulations, and then we’re stuck with them. It’s beyond difficult to deal with from that perspective.”

While both seemingly sympathized with the potential issue, Garrett added, “Our ability to go in and cite somebody for something that our building official has no authority over is limited. The building code does not accommodate that.”

Director of public works Carlos Solis provided clarification on a potential plan to implement parking and launch fees at Sombrero Beach as well as the city’s three public boat ramps. Using automated pay stations, Solis’ initial proposal projected a revenue stream of $1.2 million per year for the city, with an initial capital investment of $187,000 and yearly operating expenses of $145,000.

“As I look at our city’s aging infrastructure, for the first few years everything is relatively new and maintenance is low-key. But we’re 20 years old, and our facilities will need a lot of work,” said Solis. “We’re looking at ways to generate those revenues without raising property taxes.”

Though exact amounts have yet to be determined, Solis’ plan would impose per-use fees for parking and boat ramp usage for non-residents, while residents would continue to use the facilities either for free or for a smaller yearly fee.

Solis was given direction to continue developing the program and working to establish potential fees.

In other news: - Parks and recreation director Paul Davis informed the council that the Community Park’s new fitness court should be finished in a few weeks.

- With a vote of 4-1 in its first hearing, with councilman Trevor Wofsey as the lone “no,” the council voted to approve an amendment to Marathon’s building certification ordinance, to restrict the recertification process to include only multi-story buildings.

- In its first hearing, the council unanimously voted to approve an amendment to the city’s charter to increase city council members’ term lengths to four years. The longer terms would allow Marathon’s elections to synchronize with larger state and national elections and increase voter turnout.

- The council asked Williams to proceed with drafting a new Marathon sign ordinance based on an adaptation of Monroe County’s code.

- The council heard citizens’ comments concerning building permits, Jet Ski tours operating close to shore and subdivided mobile homes, and received thanks for their support of the Domestic Abuse Shelter.

RODRIGUEZ READY TO TACKLE CONDO FRAUD, SECURE STEWARDSHIP FUNDS JIM McCARTHY

eapportionment of House and Senate districts, condominiums and environmental dollars are among the priorities for the Keys representative in the Florida State Senate, Ana Maria Rodriguez, in her second

year.

Districts in which the Keys and portions of Miami-Dade lie are the farthest from the state capital in Tallahassee. While some legislators travel by air, others hop in the car. Rodriguez is one of them who leaves from her home in Homestead for an 8-hour or longer trip up the Turnpike and 1-75 — “if there’s no accidents; it can be longer,” she said. “It can be quite exhausting.”

She’s made a few trips to Tallahassee in recent time to examine and discuss district maps as a member of the Senate Committee on Reapportionment. After each decennial census, the legislature redraws districts from which Florida voters elect their state representatives, state senators and members of the U.S. House. It’s done to adjust for uneven growth in different parts of the state.

Per census data, Florida’s population increased from 18.8 million in 2010 to 21.5 million in 2020. Average number of people in each congressional district rose by 769,000, while the number of people in each of the 120 state House districts went up by almost 180,000. In state Senate districts, figures rose by 538,000.

Per the Florida Constitution, the legislature is directed to redraw district boundaries at its regular session in the second year following the decennial census. That all begins Jan. 11, 2022, but committee meetings are underway.

Rodriguez said feedback remains positive on the Senate maps as a 12-member committee works through the process.

Map lines for Rodriguez’s District 39, which represents the Keys and portions of Miami-Dade, hasn’t changed much, she said.

“My district keeps all of Monroe County, but I lose some northern parts of the district and pick up portions on the east side,” she said. “It shifts around a little bit, but from a distance it almost looks the same.

“It does keep Homestead, which is where I currently live,” she continued. “I’m happy that I don’t have to move. We love living in Homestead because we’re close to the Keys.”

Like state Rep. Jim Mooney, Rodriguez worked to secure $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act — a major win for the island chain. And like Mooney, Rodriguez will file a bill on the Senate side to go after more money for a program that supports water quality projects.

“I think that making sure that we bring home environmental funding for such a delicate area like the Keys is extremely important,” Rodriguez said. “From a funding perspective, Stewardship money is of utmost importance to me.”

Mooney told the Weekly in a recent interview that his bill will seek funds for the Stewardship Act on a recurring basis.

Rodriguez said she’ll file a companion bill in the Senate with similar language. She’s uncertain of its prospects, however.

“I don’t know if appropriation chairs in the House and Senate want to see this forever and ever. They might say maybe we should lower to $5 million or $10 million after that,” she said. “Thankfully, Florida is in a very sure financial position, but will we be in a strong financial position forever? I don’t know. I hope so.

“I think Jim and I have what it takes to get it in the budget, even if it’s not a recurring item,” she continued.

On the policy side, Rodriguez will look into condominium reform following the tragic Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside on June 24, which took 98 lives. It came as the building was under a 40-year recertification.

“I feel like we need to take a close look at condo laws and make sure people who serve on boards have proper education to ensure they know what they’re getting themselves into,” she said.

“A lot of people come from a good place and are well intentioned, but they don’t have knowledge to serve. I’d like to see some education surrounding studies and what you need so you’re not stuck in a hole financially for your condo.”

A bill filed by Rodriguez proposes the creation of the Condominium Fraud Investigation Pilot within the Department of Legal Affairs. The program would investigate corruption and condorelated fraud in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. According to the bill text, the department may contract with a private entity that employs retired law enforcement officers who have expertise in financial fraud.

The bill comes in light of a recent arrest involving a former bookkeeper who reportedly stole more than $13,000 from Calusa Campground Resort & Marina in Key Largo. Misglenia Guerra, 42, of Homestead, was charged with fraud, grand theft and multiple counts of uttering a forged instrument after the resort’s property manager alerted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office of fraudulent activity in April. Guerra was allegedly writing fraudulent checks on behalf of the business to a cleaning business she owned. Guerra posted a $5,000 bond on Nov. 18. She went before County Judge Luis Garcia on Jan. 4 for a hearing.

Rodriguez’s legislation currently sits in the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Environment and General Government.

n Monday, Dec. 13, Sylvia Murphy, former Monroe County Commissioner for District 5 and current mayor emeritus and goodwill ambassador, had an important matter to attend to at her Key Largo home. Her cat was swatting ornaments from the lower branches of her Christmas Tree.

“Stop that! No!” she shouted, clapping. The cat bolted. Murphy sat back in her armchair, shook her head and smiled. The ease of retirement suits her, and she’ll tell you so. But don’t worry, her conversation is still full of her famous, feisty “Murphy-isms.”

“I’m happy as a pig in manure,” she said, throwing her head back in laughter. “I’m definitely not bored. I read.

I go for walks. I watch TV — mostly crime and fire-rescue shows.”

The fact that she watches firerescue shows shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who have followed her career. Before Murphy, a Republican, was a commissioner from 2006 to 2020, she retired as an EMT with the Monroe County Emergency Medical Services in 1996 and also served two decades with the Tavernier Volunteer Fire Department.

“I loved every minute of those 14 years,” she said, referring to her time as a commissioner. “When someone disagrees with you, it sharpens your mind a little bit.”

She explained that she retired in November 2020 because the time had simply come. “At 86, was I going to be a county commissioner at 90? Come on,” she said, rolling her eyes.

Her proudest accomplishment?

Her hand in helping to establish Key Largo’s Rowell’s Waterfront Park at MM104. She knew the owner of that land and was instrumental in brokering the deal.

“It doesn’t matter if the park sits vacant, it belongs to the county,” she said. “One day, after hurricanes pass and roads are raised, it will be a beautiful park. I arranged for Roman (county administrator Roman Gastesi) to meet with the owners of the marina with the price he quoted me. Roman met them for lunch and finalized it.”

It seems that other commissioners agree that Murphy had done a commendable job. At the Dec. 8 BOCC meeting, the current board passed a resolution acknowledging her service and proclaiming her as mayor emeritus and goodwill ambassador for the Florida Keys.

“In her voluntary and symbolic position, she can award the coveted Honorary Conch certificates to those she deems deserving of such an honor,” the county statement read.

Mayor David Rice told Keys Weekly that he supports Murphy’s new role.

“Sylvia is very active out in the community,” he said. “She truly seemed to enjoy her job. As a county commissioner, she ran up and down the Keys, going to everything. And you never have to question where Sylvia’s thoughts are, because they are at the tip of her tongue. And she would agree with that. I love Sylvia, and I think that she would appreciate the honor. It hasn’t been done that many times, so why not?”

Murphy said that the only other mayor emeritus was Wilhelmina Harvey, who was the first woman elected to the Monroe County Commission.

“It’s an honor. I’m in very good company.”

Murphy has always been open about her years-long battle with metastasized lung cancer. “My health is very good,” she said. “I have not had any treatment in over a year. I get scans every six months. I am enjoying retirement. In mid-November, I thought, ‘My phone has not rung in two days.’ And I was so happy.”

t its Dec. 14 meeting, the board of the Monroe County School District approved extending Superintendent Theresa Axford’s employment contract through July 31, 2024, with an annual salary of $175,000. But the approval did not go completely smoothly. Out of the five board members, one cast a dissenting vote: Bobby Highsmith.

Highsmith pointed out during the meeting that when Axford’s first contract was created in the depths of the pandemic, the terms stated that she would hold the position from July 31, 2020, through July 31, Superintendent Theresa Axford.

The contract read as follows: “This agreement may be renewed for one calendar year as approved by a supermajority of the board.”

“That unique language was put in there because Mrs. Axford was hired with the understanding that this was going to be an interim type position, that she did not want the job for more than two years,” Highsmith said at the meeting. “And that if there were extraordinary circumstances, a supermajority of the board could vote to give her one additional year. As I said at the last meeting, I think Superintendent Axford has done a magnificent job guiding us through COVID and she’s been wonderful. And my vote not to renew this current agreement is no reflection on that.

“But we did say we did not open the pool to any other candidates when Mrs. Axford was hired, we did not conduct any sort of search … and we told the public at the time that the reason we were doing that was because Mrs. Axford would only be here for a short amount of time. And I think we made that pledge to the public and I think our words should matter.”

Highsmith told Keys Weekly that he would have been comfortable if Axford’s new contract

extended her employment for just another year, through the end of 2023, rather than through 2024.

He also pointed out that when she was hired in July 2020, it was a time of great instability: the pandemic was raging; the previous superintendent, Mark Porter, had decided not to renew his contract; and the district had also just lost its director of finance.

“To add stability, the board decided not to solicit candidates but decided to directly hire Mrs. Axford with the understanding that it was for two years,” Highsmith said.

He reiterated that he approves of her work. “I think she has done a fabulous job,” he said.

Axford has been with the district for 33 years. Before becoming superintendent, she was the executive director of teaching and learning for the district.

In a statement to Keys Weekly, Axford did not address Highsmith’s dissenting opinion, but instead expressed gratitude to the school board.

“I have been proud and honored to serve the students, teachers, staff and families of the Monroe County School District during the past year and onehalf as superintendent,” Axford said. “I am really pleased that the school board extended my contact through June 2024 and I look forward to continuing the work of the district by helping to develop a new strategic plan, working on affordable housing and continuing our positive journey back from the difficulties brought on by Covid-19.”

Board vice chair Andy Griffiths told Keys Weekly that he had no problem approving the contract through 2024. “​​She did such a fabulous job under historic circumstances, under the pandemic, with flying colors,” Griffiths said, pointing out that she is his 10th superintendent.

“I know what’s out there. I know who applies for these jobs. I’m not saying we should search, but when you have a good one, you should hang on to them. And it was important to show that support last night.”

Salvation Army red kettle campaign seeks to grow volunteer base

A

t this point, the red kettles and ringing bells of the Salvation Army are a worldwide symbol of giving during the holiday season. This year, they could use a little help.

Started in 1891 by Captain Joseph McFee, the worldrenowned Red Kettle campaign was also established in Marathon for several years, but was absent for a period of time following the Salvation Army store’s departure from the island before Hurricane Irma. In the aftermath of the storm, the Salvation Army contributed more than $2 million to more than 400 families in Monroe County to assist in repair and rebuilding efforts.

Now, thanks to the work of Loretta Geotis and others, the Red Kettle tradition has also returned to Winn-Dixie and Publix for its third consecutive year. “We’re trying to re-establish the Salvation Army in a positive way in Monroe County,” said Geotis. Staffed largely by volunteers who ring bells and collect donations in twohour shifts, the Red Kettle campaign runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

While her effort has received tremendous volunteer support from local organizations like the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, the Marathon Rotary Club and the Marathon Fire Department, among many others, Geotis said she still has “a lot of slots to fill before Christmas” as she rounds out the last few weekends of the campaign. Even so, she is infinitely grateful for her current pool of volunteers, some of whom travel from Big Pine and Islamorada to assist.

“The people who support this really support it in a big way,” said Geotis. “Some people have even gotten into the habit of wearing costumes. The more energy the bell ringer has, the more money goes into the kettle.” Last year’s campaign netted more than $15,000 in donations, and this year’s total is hoping for a final Christmas push as it sits at roughly $7,000.

Though the Red Kettle campaign is a national event, Geotis assures potential donors that their funds will stay in the Keys. “I’m the Salvation Army’s social services manager for Monroe County, so I’m directly responsible for that,” said Geotis. “I make sure every penny of the donations collected goes to help Keys residents in need.”

i friends! Reef the fox here with this weeks’ “Reef’s Report”. Can you all believe that the year is almost over?

Holy smokes, time flies when you’re living the good life like me and all my fox friends here.

Last weekend we had a very special visitor from New York City come to meet us. He is a well-known street artist that uses his talents REEF to raise awareness for animal issues. He had THE FOX never met a fox before, and does a lot of “antifur” art, so he was really inspired by us and may Reef is a red fox create some art to help mom raise money for that was saved us. Right after the event with Coral, you can head down to Holiday Fest at Island Home Garden Center in Tavernier. Santa will be stopping by, and there will be fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Sugar cookie decorating, a Christmas in a cup workshop and Island Home’s farmer’s market and gift shop will be available.

The new Gardenia’s Bistro will also be open, so go on down to grab some goodies, and enjoy all of the festivities the garden has to offer. I think mom should bring Coral home then take me down there because I love cookies. I know it sounds strange, a fox eating cookies, but trust me on this.

Then to end the day you can go down to the Full Moon party at Whale Harbor. It’s a disco-themed party to benefit Voices for Florida Keys Children. Wood Campbell will be throwing out the good music. The party is from 5 to 9 p.m.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Mu Alpha Theta is a mathematics honor society for high school students.

Society members' main goals are to promote interest in mathematics, develop deeper knowledge in the subject and promote the enjoyment of mathematics in high school.

This year the club has really taken holiday cheer to the next level. For Halloween, society members paraded around the lunch room asking students math questions ranging from simple multiplication to advanced statistics problems. Students with the correct answers would be awarded a Halloween candy prize.

During Thanksgiving week, corn hole throwing contests were held in the lunchroom.

Participating students were asked to pay a small fee to enter the game. The proceeds went toward the club’s costs and tassels for graduation.

For the Christmas season, members decided to go door to door carolling, but added a math twist to each of the song lyrics. “We wanted to follow the famous words of Buddy the Elf: ‘The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing loud for all to hear,’” said a participating club member.

“We have a lot of fun,” said society sponsor and high school math teacher Michelle James. “We really just want to raise awareness for math by showing how fun it can be, and it works. I think I have convinced several students to join my AP statistics class for next fall.”

BRYANNA JOUVIN Freshman Weightlifting team Bryanna Jouvin, a freshman at Marathon High School, is one of the most recent additions to the girls weightlifting team.

Jouvin said she joined the team to be a part of the positive environment. After entering the weight room following an early cheer practice, she said that she felt like she walked into a room full of strong and confident athletes.

Joining the team was originally difficult for Jouvin. “I was a part of the girls cheerleading team in the fall,” she said. “I had to come to a decision whether to join the weightlifting team or to continue practicing with the basketball cheerleading team. When it came down to it, I wasn’t always making the right choices in cheerleading. I needed a strong

Jouvin offers high praise for head coach Jessie Schubert. “The coach is really great. He doesn’t let you give up. Not even at your lowest points. I often don’t feel good about the weight that I’m lifting, but my coach encourages me to try my hardest and get stronger.

This was probably one of the best things I’ve done this year. I feel better about myself when I’m surrounded by other people who care and work hard.”

When asked if she would join the team for future years to come, Bryanna left no room for doubt. “I want to do this for the next three years that I am in high school. And I would 100% encourage other girls like me to join. It has really changed my attitude not only toward sports, but what it means to be a part of a team.”

Boys Varsity MHS vs. Somerset Silver Palms Dec. 7 Tie (2-2) Henry Herrera- 2 points “Perseverance was key in this game,” said coach Kelley Cruz.

The team started off with a deficit after Somerset scored in the first 15 minutes of the game. Somerset’s team controlled the midfield and controlled the ball well with their footwork. The second quarter rolled around and the teams tied up 1-1 after Carlitos Avena assisted Henry Herrera on a long ball over the top of the defense. In the 3rd quarter, both teams were fighting hard to take the lead, but Somerset eventually scored on a crossover to go up 2-1. Marathon's energy ran into the 4th quarter as the Fins put the pressure on the Stallions.

The game-tying goal came with four minutes to spare via another long ball by Herrera, assisted by Giancarlos Prieto.

Girls Varsity MHS vs. Archimedean Dec. 9 L (3-2) “The Dolphins played their best game of the season. They never gave up or got down,” said coach Tracy McDonald. “At practice we have been focusing on working together and communicating with one another.” The team chalks their improvement up to this focus on teamwork and communication. Just before the half, junior Aliyah Gonzalez scored for the Fins, but it was called back on an offsides penalty. “This sparked the offense,” said McDonald.

“Marathon did not get down on themselves or let up. The two goal deficit mark is typically where we start to let up and get down on ourselves, but I think the team finally realized they could do this and they didn’t stop driving.” Just before the water break in the second half, freshman Jordan MacDonald scored off of a Riley McDonald assist. “With only a few minutes left in the game, we wanted to score a quick goal in any way we could, so we took advantage of an Archimedean injury timeout and moved Jordan to striker,” said McDonald. “She found a way to score with a minute or two to spare, closing the gap a bit.”

A FIELD GUIDE TO FIELD GUIDES

MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

B

irdwatching, at its core, is pretty simple.

All you really need are a pair of binoculars and a field guide. As with any enthusiasm, there are plenty of ways to spend a lot of money, but you can get started pretty cheaply.

A really good pair of binoculars can run you up to $3,000. Most are made by companies like Zeiss, Leica and Swarovski, and there are strong arguments to be made for buying them, but not for your first, second or maybe even third pair. (One of the arguments is durability. I’ve used the same pair of Swarovski binoculars for more than 15 years, and I’ll probably get another 15 years out of them if I don’t forget them somewhere, get them stolen, or inadvertently drop them into the deep part of the ocean.)

But you can also get a pretty decent pair of store-brand binoculars from a place like West Marine for as little as $120. They are good enough 98% of the time. I used a pair like that for years.

And I know my cheapo starter binoculars were probably far better than anything Roger Tory Peterson had in the 1930s while he was figuring out how to make the first real field guide to birds. Just don’t buy anything gimcrack out of, say, the Sharper Image catalog or the back pages of a magazine that isn’t about birds.

When I started birding, I bought a lousy field guide, and for a couple years I went around feeling dumb because I couldn’t make the leap from what I was seeing on the page to what I was seeing in the field. It was like an 800-piece puzzle where none of the pieces fit together.

The best field guides are the ones that help you see what you’re seeing, to help ring the bell of cognitive recognition. I guess this is a short, and by no means comprehensive, roundup of what field guides I feel do that best.

Roger Tory Peterson’s “A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America,” which most people just refer to as the Peterson guide, pretty much created the whole concept of birdwatching. It also saved me as a nascent birdwatcher. It was the first real modern field guide, published in 1934, and the publishers were so sure no one was really interested in such a thing.

They only printed 2,000 copies that sold out in a week. Peterson went on to sell over 7 million field guides in his lifetime.

The genius of the book was its simplicity. It was designed to fit comfortably in your hip pocket. The illustrations were simple and clear and had small arrows pointing to the characteristics that made each species distinct. There were maps of where a species was likely to be seen in your part of the country.

I used my copy until it had to be held together with duct tape, then used it some more. Peterson died in 1994, but the guide has

been continually updated. In modern times the book is both stylish and a little antiquated, a bit like playing tennis with a wooden racket or driving a wire-grilled MG. But it still does a really good job of showing you what kind of bird you are looking at.

One of the other books I used in my early days was “Florida’s Birds: A Field Guide and Reference” written by David S. Maehr and Herbert W. Kale, and illustrated by Karl Karalus. It lacks maps, and is a little big to carry in your pocket. Its biggest advantage is that it narrows things down to the birds regularly seen in the state, saving a lot of confusion and acquainting you with the usual suspects so you’re prepared to recognize the unusual ones.

The “National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America” screams authoritative in the manner expected from a book produced by the folks at National Geographic. Its maps and text are highly informed and deeply thorough, and the paintings inside are dense with detail – which is kind of my problem with it.

All that detail muddies the waters, blurring the distinctions between similar-looking species rather than highlighting them. (The diagnostic details are in the text descriptions, but you have to dig for them.) I can’t argue that it’s not a good field guide, but I think it’s best suited to birders more obsessive and innately perceptive than, say, me.

Which brings me to the “Sibley Guide to Birds,” which I think is the greatest advance to the simple act of bird watching since Roger Tory Peterson. The first edition in 2000 was as comprehensive as the National Geographic guide. It was actually much larger, so everyone was relieved when “The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America” came out. About half the size, it fits nicely in your hip pocket. (There is also one for Western North America.)

Sibley’s illustrations are the book’s genius. They are impressionistic, showing not what your eye, but your brain, will see. It highlights the differences between species. It sharpens your perceptions rather than straining them.

Both the Sibley Guide and the Peterson guide also come in app form, which is great in that they are always with you, and they contain recordings of most bird songs and calls. But phone screens can be really hard to read outside on bright days. And you kind of need an understanding of bird taxonomy to find what you’re looking for. It’s much easier to find your direction while flailing around in a book. Also, it’s really hard to just randomly flip through an app, to come across a picture of a bird and think, damn, what the hell is that? And then let your curiosity run wild.

The club inducted three new Rotarians to bring its total membership up to 56, congratulated Paul Harris fellows for their significant financial contributions to the Rotary Foundation, and was even able to honor the first Marathon Rotarian, G. Borden Makepeace, in person. arathon’s musical middle and high school students showcased their talent on Dec. 7 at MMHS’s 2021 Winter Music Concert, directed

by Spencer Oyster. The audience was treated to a mix of nine pieces (and a few sing-along songs) performed by the school’s choir, beginning band, symphonic band and wind ensemble.

Greeting attendees at the entrance was an art installation of work by MMHS students. Among several styles, colorful 2D and 3D “neurographic art” literally leaped off the display boards.

“Neurographic art can look abstract or realistic. It doesn’t matter what style the end result is; what matters is how one approaches the activity,” said art teacher Kristi Ferrise. “The goal of neurographic art is to create mindfulness and intentionality. It relaxes the mind and creates a calm peaceful feeling.”

n Dec. 11, two truck beds full of toys for children in need received a thunderous escort of nearly 20 riders on motorcycles and Slingshots from Marathon to Islamorada. Sponsored by the American Legion, the Toys for Tots ride delivered toys collected largely by the veterans association’s Marathon location. “We had collected donations, and then we went down to the Imagination Station in Key West and practically bought out the store,” said Bobby Wellsby. The riders received a blessing from Reverend Debra Maconaughey before departing as a caravan for the Ocean View Inn, where they added their haul to other donations from Key West and Key Largo.

What’s your favorite drink to make?

A Paloma. We have great citrus in Florida, so it always comes out extremely fresh and colorful.

What’s the best part about being a bartender? I get to meet a lot of cool people that I wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to have a conversation with.

All right, enough of that. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done? One day I was sitting in my sister’s car and there was a perfume bottle covered in glitter. I wanted to annoy her by pretending to use her perfume. Turns out, it was pepper spray. I power sprayed myself in the face, and hit my brother behind me too.

What’s the funniest gift you’ve ever given? When I was 17, a bunch of family came over to our house for Christmas. I had real presents for everyone, but first, I stole something that each person owned and gifted it to someone else in the room. I even used the collections of teeth that we’d saved from the Tooth Fairy.

Affordable home-cooked meals are Keys Rotisserie’s hallmark

F

ast, homemade, affordable. When dining in the Keys, it’s usually a “pick two of those three” situation. With any luck, Keys Rotisserie in Marathon might be able to change that.

The Middle Keys’ newest eatery is a labor of love for Frank and Jodie Buonaruto. As full-time residents since 2019, the couple always knew they wanted to relocate to the Keys when their children went off to college. The two are no strangers to the culinary industry; they met when Frank’s parents owned Super Subs (Subway, before Subway was cool) and Jodie was working at a deli.

Upon moving, they quickly saw a dining need within the community, and their business idea was born.

“There are a lot of great restaurants in Marathon, but sometimes they’re hard to get into, and there’s a lot of seafood,” said Jodie. “We needed something for the locals where they can grab a quick and affordable dinner or lunch and not have to cook that night. When we lived out west, there was a rotisserie that we loved, and we thought that would be great here. Quick options, chicken and steak, and everything homemade.”

Working in Key West for a remodeling company immediately after their move gave the pair plenty of time to hammer out the details of their plan during their two-plus hours of driving each day. Enlisting the help of Jodie’s sister Tara Carr as a part owner, the trio slowly moved toward Keys Rotisserie’s eventual opening. “We didn’t come here with a lot of money to open a restaurant. It’s all sweat equity,” said Frank. “For the last two and a half years, any time we made a little bit, we would buy something for the restaurant. We already knew what we wanted, because we designed it from scratch on the car rides.”

The sweat equity hasn’t stopped yet. As it stands now, they choose to work from 7 a.m. until roughly 11 p.m. every day. The couple and their son Chris are still the store’s only staff. “We wanted to start small so we can manage what we have and understand the business,” explained Jodie. “It’s a family business serving a family meal. It’s kind of old school, but we’re going to bring it back,” said Frank.

Speaking of family meals, Keys Rotisserie’s menu is based entirely on proprietary recipes either crafted by Frank and Jodie themselves or passed down from relatives over the years. They intend to use those family recipes to

serve the families of the Keys. “The biggest thing we’re doing is trying to keep it affordable for everybody,” said Jodie. It’s true; as just one example, a “chicken and steak combo” serves up ¼ rotisserie chicken, ¼ pound of tri-tip steak, and two sides for just $15. “We’re willing to work a little harder for a little less,” said Frank. “We’re doing this for the people who live here.”

In one month since the restaurant’s opening, the flame-cooked rotisserie chicken and steak have already started to draw a crowd. “We’re already at our six-month goal in terms of the number of chickens we cook every day,” said Frank. The restaurant is doing everything it can to keep all food preparations in-house and avoid shortcuts, taking great pride in the handcrafted meals it offers.

The couple is looking forward to building on what they’ve started already with the community at their back.

While the option isn’t available yet, they are looking into future ideas for delivery and curbside services. “Some people have eaten here every day since we’ve been open,” said Jodie. “It’s been a labor of love, but it’s been worth it because the people we have met have been fabulous and so supportive. I get calls every day.”

This is NOT a ‘Best Of’ list…

ne of the many things I love about the Holiday Season is the infiltration of Christmas songs on the radio (or people’s playlists). There are so many wonderful songs that bring back fond memories of childhood Christmases and that special feeling of goodwill.

Sadly, the songs featured in this column are none of those.

Instead, here are some of the worst Christmas songs that somehow, beyond any rational cognitive explanation, became hits or traditions and are remembered to this day. I apologize in advance for the earworms I am about to unleash.

“Dominick the Donkey” – Lou Monte. One of the most asked Google questions this time of year is, “Is ‘Dominick the Donkey’ a real song?” Yes, Virginia — there is such a song. Many wish this song was only a myth. I’m not sure if it was red-nosed reindeer envy from other species of hooved animals, but there is no real or necessary reason to have a Christmas donkey.

Just add a cheesy goombah-wannabe narrator/singer who would have totally failed a Goodfellas audition, and you’ll have a song that will make you want to whack your own knee and stuff yourself in a car trunk. Jiggety-jig! Hee-haw!

“Good King Wenceslas” – traditional. So Wenceslas was a king. It was friggin’ cold out on that particular feast of Stephen (which is the day after Christmas). And His Majesty decides to brave the freezing temperatures to give alms to a poor peasant gathering firewood.

He almost kills his page in the process.

(The page is saved by using the King’s hot footprints in the snow as his salvation.) Seriously — what better reminders of the holiday spirit exist than the lyrics, “Bring me flesh and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither.” Puts me right in the mood.

“Little Saint Nick” – The Beach Boys. This really isn’t a bad song, and it brings back fond memories of childhood Christmases in the 1960s. It’s only mentioned here because of its absolutely stupid line, “Christmas comes this time each year.” Duh! “I Farted on Santa’s Lap (Now Christmas Is Gonna Stink For Me)” – The Little Stinkers. This really is a song.

It’s really bad. Should you not care to look it up on YouTube (I suggest you don’t), imagine a mediocre elementary school Christmas program with kids singing about eating beans before a Santa visit accompanied by a choir teacher playing an upright piano. But I’m sure all the parents were proud…

“Hallelujah” – Leonard Cohen.

Great song… but it has not a damn

thing to do with Christmas. There’s no Jesus, no tree, no reindeer and no Santa. I’m so not sure why it’s become a holiday classic.

“Frosty The JOHN Snowman” – Gene Autry/Jimmy DuBARTUS rante (and loads of is the Mayor of others). Sure, the the City of Marakids love Frosty. thon. “Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)” – John Denver. A sad tale about an 8-year-old boy who remembers drunken Daddy passing out and falling down into the tree the previous Christmas. The song is a very sad tale, inexplicably set to a jaunty country half-time beat. Topped off with a heapin’ helpin’ of Mama’s tears, the song truly offers a message of Happy Holidays between heart-wrenching sobs. Makes you want a drink.

“The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot” – Vera Lynn/Nat King Cole. This is a real Christmas song about a poor boy who wanders home to “play with last year’s broken toys.” The song’s actual lyrics include: “I’m so sorry for that laddie, he hasn’t got a daddy.” If this song doesn’t put a damper on your holiday party, nothing will.

“I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” – Gayla Peevey. I don’t care.

“Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS” – Tiny Tim. There’s no way I could make this stuff up. It begs the question: why would anyone make up something like Santa getting AIDS?!

All the above being said, go try and find some good Christmas music to take your mind off of these holiday abominations. Maybe we’ll reflect on some better music next week. Perhaps all the great Festivus carols…?

BRIEFLY KCB Community Association prepares for Coconut Crawl Registration is open for the 2022 Coconut Crawl, Key Colony Beach’s annual pub crawl and poker walk to benefit Middle Keys Hospice. United Methodist Church hosts free Parents’ Night Out Marathon Community United Methodist Church is hosting a free Parents’ Night Out on Friday, Dec. 17.

Sheriff’s Office to disburse more holiday gift cards Sheriff Rick Ramsay was contacted Wednesday by Marathon City Councilman Steve Cook who wished to donate $4,000. The donation comes just after the sheriff’s office received $4,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Zachary Bentley of Key West.

Mr. Cook, like the Bentleys, has been a longtime supporter of law enforcement and community. Mr. Cook, after hearing about the Bentleys’ donation, stated he also wanted to show support for law enforcement and set an example of community partnerships.

Deputies will give out Winn-Dixie gift cards on behalf of Mr. Cook and Publix gift cards on behalf of the Bentleys throughout the county to those in need this holiday season.

Ramsay praised the donations.

“It’s so nice to see someone respond to the goodwill of others and join them in solidarity,” he said. “This is what makes this community special! Many more people are going to be helped this holiday season by this additional donation.”
