NATION’S OVERDOSE RATE SKYROCKETS

Sheriff: ‘We have to be vigilant’ in the Keys

ack in April, when Rhonda Brewer’s 31-year-old son Marshall Carlton “Carly” Simonds visited her at his childhood home in Islamorada, she looked into his eyes and knew he was using. Again.

“I took his face in my hands and said, ‘Don’t go back to South Carolina. I’ll drive you to rehab. Let’s go,’” she recalled. “He said, ‘I don’t want to lose my job.’ He went back to South Carolina, and three weeks later, he was gone.”

Simonds overdosed on fentanyl on April 26, after battling his drug addiction for 12 years.

Brewer is not alone in her grief. Last month, national headlines told the story: “Overdose Deaths Reached Record High as the Pandemic Spread,” said the title of a Nov. 17 New York Times article.

“In the 12-month period that ended in April, more than 100,000 Americans died of overdoses,” the article said. “The figure marks the first time the number of overdose deaths in the United States has exceeded 100,000 a year, more than the toll of car crashes and gun fatalities combined. …

The rise in deaths — the vast majority caused by synthetic opioids — was fueled by widespread use of fentanyl, a fast-acting drug that is 100 times as powerful as morphine.”

Brewer said the coroner of Greenwood County, South Carolina, where her son overdosed, told her that Simonds’ lethal dose of fentanyl measured 17 nanograms, the size of the tip of a grain of rice.

Simonds had scored the drug before reporting to work at an electrical company on the morning of April 26. He went with his boss to a supply store and excused himself to go to the bathroom, where he took his fix. He died on the spot.

Though Simonds died in South Carolina, he battled his addiction for the most part in the Florida Keys, Brewer told Keys Weekly in an interview.

He became hooked on drugs in his first year at the University of Florida, having been supplied with cocaine by his dealer roommate, said Brewer.

“And he fell down the rabbit hole,” she said.

Prior to that, no one would have predicted that this would be Simonds’ fate. He graduated at the top of his class at Coral Shores High School and was captain of the swim team. He read voraciously.

“If you were to ask anyone on these islands what they remember most about my son, they would all tell you his smile, and how caring he was,” said Brewer.

She helped her son with his battle while he lived in the Keys, sending him to rehab three times.

“He spent three years clean in the Navy,” she said.

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said the death rate from drug overdoses in the Florida Keys is not as high as other places in the country.

“But we’ve got to continue to be vigilant,” he said.

“As a lawman in the ’80s and ’90s in the Keys, people dying from drugs was unheard of. Now an overdose is just another day at the office. We use Narcan all the time,” said Ramsay.

Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, is a nasal spray that can treat a narcotic overdose.

“Last year, we had a couple in a trailer with three kids. In a garbage trailer. They had Narcan, and they had the same pact. But they were so high, one passed out while the other overdosed. The husband died.”

“We’re not as bad as other parts of the nation.

But do we have a problem? Yes,” he continued.

“You never saw meth, almost never saw heroin. It was marijuana, cocaine and crack back then. Now it’s perceived as not too big a deal, the stuff we thought were hard drugs. Now we’re like, ‘Eh.’” Ramsay expressed concern that users of opioids — which include fentanyl, heroin and oxycontin pills — see Narcan as a safety net and therefore feel more comfortable abusing drugs. He pointed out that Narcan is available over the counter in

CVS and said that addicts often use in pairs. They make a deadly pact to use their drug of choice one at a time. If one person looks like they are overdosing, the other person will revive them with Narcan.

“It encourages people to use drugs at higher volumes,” Ramsay explained. “Last year, we had a couple in a trailer with three kids. In a garbage trailer. They had Narcan, and they had the same pact. But they were so high, one passed out while the other overdosed. The husband died.”

Maureen Dunleavy is the regional vice president of the Guidance/Care Center, which has branches in Key West, Marathon and Key Largo. She said that in the past year, nine people died from drug overdoses of opioids, including fentanyl and heroin, in the Keys. That number would have been higher if not for Narcan, she said. The Guidance/Care Center gives out Narcan for free.

“In 53 overdose cases in 2021, Narcan was used in 29 of those cases. And we had nine deaths. We are definitely making an impact with reducing fatal doses,” Dunleavy said.

Brewer has been wrestling with her grief, she said.

Therapy hasn’t helped. Some days she can make it without crying. She knows other mothers in the Keys who have children who are addicted to opioids. Sometimes, they ask her for advice.

“I’m still in raw emotion,” she said. “My knee-jerk reaction is, ‘God help you.’ You can only do so much. You can lead a horse to water. It’s the same with an addict. It’s up to them to accept the help.”

Dr. Bruce Boros is “physically healthy and working on four projects at once,” he told the Keys Weekly in a text message on Monday, two weeks after he’d been hospitalized with COVID following his attendance at a Frontline Doctors event in Ocala.

His COVID infection made global headlines last week given his fervent endorsement of the drug Ivermectin for prevention and treatment of COVID, his online testimonials about successfully treating “hundreds of patients” with it and his attendance at the FLCCC COVID summit, where at least six other attendees ended up with COVID. The Frontline COVID Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC) has actively promoted the use of Ivermectin while questioning the safety and necessity of the COVID vaccines.

Boros, a retired cardiologist, owns three Advanced Urgent Care centers in the Florida Keys. The company’s website now states they are not able to provide Ivermectin due to demand and delays, but the website refers people to an FLCCC-affiliated website.

Boros is reportedly back home in Key West.

‘BEYOND THE FIRE THERE IS HOPE’ Key Largo neighborhood rallies behind grandparents who lost home CHARLOTTE TWINE

n the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 26, one day after Thanksgiving, 78-year-old Nimia Morejon lay down to take a nap in her Key Largo home.

She had just fried tostones and yucca in her backyard kitchen and wanted to rest before her 83-year-old husband, Oriol, came home from fishing.

She woke up with a start to the sound of her bedroom window’s glass breaking. Voices shouted, “Fire! Fire!

Fuego! Fuego! You!” Two local women, Alyssa Courant and Michele Maraugha, had been walking by and saw flames curling around the back of the house. Alarmed, they checked the windows and saw Nimia sleeping, broke the glass, woke her up and dragged her to the street.

Once the group was on the street, explosions boomed from the backyard kitchen: one … two … three. Then they watched as flames raced through the entire trailer and neighbors dragged over hoses in an attempt to stop the inferno. The Key Largo Fire Department arrived and told the entire group to back away while they doused the blaze. The home was lost.

On Nov. 30, Nimia’s daughter, Nancy, showed Keys Weekly the charred embers of the trailer.

“The city has deemed it uninhabitable,” she said. The family plans to demolish the trailer and buy Nimia and Oriol a brand new home.

“They deserve it,” Nancy said, in tears, looking down and kicking ash with her shoe.

The reason for the fire? Nimia had not turned off one of the gas burners. The stove top simply heated up while she was napping, then burst into flames, leading to the explosions.

“She feels bad,” Nancy said, then translated for her mother.

“I’m not happy,” Nimia said in Spanish. “I’m not eating right, not sleeping right. It’s repeating in my head.”

“She has post-traumatic stress,” said her grandson, Michael, who was also on the site with Nancy and his father, George, to help Nimia and Oriol clean charred debris.

The family explained that Nimia and Oriol’s home was a labor of love for the couple, who live in Hialeah and come to Key Largo twice a month. They arrived from Cuba with their children in 1967 with nothing but the clothes on

their backs and slowly built a life and a large family that includes four grandchildren and six great-grandkids.

With that same determination, Nimia and Oriol are now rebuilding their Key Largo home. And the whole family is doing their part to help. For example, their granddaughter Ashley Perez started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the demolition of the old trailer, which was not insured, and a new home.

“Beyond the fire there is hope,” said Nancy, watching as her 83-yearold father cleared glass from a broken window. She is moved by all the help from Courant, Maraugha and many neighbors, who, in addition to saving Nimia’s life, tried to douse the fire and brought over lunches and electrical power cords from their own homes. Nancy said the Good Samaritans refused when she offered to pay their electrical bill. The family is also extremely grateful to all the first responders.

Nimia, a colon cancer survivor, is sad but also undaunted.

“This country is good luck,” she said. “Everything here has been good since we left.”

“The Cuban people are very resilient,” said Michael. “They made something out of nothing. We don’t quit. This is just another hurdle.”

he Trading Post’s owner, Betsy Jacocks, has been fielding calls “every day” about the Pauls, the Michigan tree farmers who have been coming to the Islamorada store for 40 years to sell Christmas trees in the lot abutting her property.

Why all the calls? The family is not coming this year.

Jacocks has been assuring callers that the Pauls are all okay.

“They had a bad crop that happened eight years ago, and they don’t have the inventory. For the first time in years. Also, there’s the rising fuel costs.

They were disappointed. So let’s keep our fingers crossed. They will try to come back next year.”

Tom Paul started the Christmas tree stand in 1980. He passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack about five years ago. But the loss of their patriarch and the backbreak-

ing work didn’t deter the family from returning to Islamorada. His son, T.J. Paul, and his partner, Jessica Shepard, didn’t even hesitate.

“It’s who we are. We’ve been coming here since high school,” Shepard said last year. “People who buy from us say, ‘We’ve been getting our trees here for 40 years.’”

As for where else to buy your tree, pickings are slim in the Upper Keys.

Publix in Islamorada and Key Largo and Tavernier’s Ace Hardware are just about sold out as of Tuesday, Nov. 30.

That leaves Home Depot in Marathon (305-289-1966) and Homestead (786243-9370). In addition, if you’d like your tree purchase to go to a good cause, try Life Pointe Church in Homestead.

Keys premiere of documentary Friday at Upper Keys Center The College of the Florida Keys will hold a free public screening of the new documentary short film “Adventures in History” on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at its new Upper Keys Center, located at Mile Marker 106.4. Directed by J. Brian King of Sun King Studio and written and produced by Laura Albritton of Magic Kumquat Productions, “Adventures in History” recounts 93-year-old historian Jerry Wilkinson’s remarkable quest to save Florida Keys history from being forgotten.

Filmed in Tavernier, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West, “Adventures in History” runs just under 20 minutes and features stunning aerial footage, archival images, music, and multiple interviews with colleagues from museums and archives. The documentary had its North American premiere at the Hollywood Florida Film Festival this November. Wilkinson and some of the film-making team will attend the premiere. After the screening, Wilkinson and his co-author will be on hand to sign copies of their new book, “Historic Lighthouses of the Florida Keys,” just published by Arcadia Publishing.

Wilkinson spent decades traveling cross-country to secure clues, interviewing 1935 hurricane survivors, and advocating for architectural heritage.

He has contributed to films, given hundreds of presentations, conducted historical reenactments, co-authored five books, led the Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys, and created a sprawling history website, keyshistory.org. Today, scholars can visit the Jerry Wilkinson Research Library at the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada.

Schools, Americorps partner for preschool literacy Florida Reading Corps is currently seeking 10 individuals to serve as preschool literacy tutors in schools in Key Largo and Tavernier. The Preschool Literacy Program places tutors in classrooms, where they serve alongside teachers to help children build skills and get ready for kindergarten.“Forty percent of kindergartners in Florida are not ready for school,” said Britney Matthews, director of Florida Programs. “Studies also show that as much as 90 percent of a child’s brain development happens up to the age of 5. Reading Corps helps kids make a strong start and sets them up to be successful learners in kindergarten and beyond.”

The 2021-22 school year marks the sixth year for Reading Corps in Florida.

The program is a research-based initiative designed to help every student become a successful reader by the end of third grade. Full-time tutors are needed to serve 35 hours per week.

All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks, plus extra money to pay for college tuition or student loans.

MONROE COUNTY SURVEYS BUILDINGS FOR SAFETY MIAMI CONDO COLLAPSE COULD LEAD TO NEW REGULATIONS

F

ollowing the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South, a mid-rise condominium building in Surfside, Florida, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) asked staff to explore options on how to monitor the safe occupation of existing structures in Monroe County.

Staff is developing guidelines and criteria for minimum requirements for structures four stories or more, built before Jan. 1, 2000, with some exemptions. There are 23 properties identified in unincorporated Monroe County, all located in the Upper Keys, that fit the criteria.

Based on information from the Monroe County Property Appraiser and Monroe County’s GIS database, unincorporated Monroe County currently has approximately 870 structures built prior to 2000 that are not single-family or duplex homes.

Of the 870 structures, findings include: • A significant amount of the inventory is more than 30 years old.

• More than 67% are located in the Upper Keys (north of Mile Marker 91, Tavernier area) • 13% are taller than two stories.

• Condominiums represent 32% of the structures.

• Warehouse, one-story stores, multi-family (less than 10 units), hotel/motel, and mixed use-residential commercial represent 31% of the structures.

How unsafe structures are inspected or declared unsafe is outside the scope of the Florida Building Code. Therefore, local jurisdictions may choose to implement property/building maintenance regulations or standards.

While the county has an existing unsafe-structure process, it depends on concerns reported from residents and observers to determine when to initiate an investigation into potentially unsafe buildings, structures, equipment or service systems. The process includes an inspection of the several systems of the building, including structural, electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing.

The current review of unsafe structures in unincorporated Monroe County is not a preemptive maintenance program and is not a comprehensive review of the current building inventory.

“Maintenance of the structural integrity of buildings in Monroe County is of critical importance to the health and safety of our residents,” said Rey Ortiz, assistant building inspector for Monroe County.

“The county will continue its current process outlined in the Monroe County Code, while monitoring Miami-Dade County adoptions, as well as any updates to the Florida Building Code or Florida Statutes.”

ith a smile on his face and camera in hand, Key West resident Scott Gerke explores the power of human connection through a simple “hello.”

Having traveled the country to learn more about people, the local DJ and adventurer is setting his focus on his fellow island residents.

Gerke loaded his van and traveled the highway as he searched for people, from a dairy farmer and an Amish man to a skateboarder. A COVID-19 pandemic crippled events and weddings in the Keys, including Gerke’s DJ gigs. Instead of sitting around, Gerke jumped on a filmmaking opportunity.

“As a community activist, I knew that if I moved into my van and traveled, I could create a new life for myself, documenting positive messages through experiences with people I once never knew through a simple ‘hello,’” he said.

Getting rid of his belongings in preparation for the adventure, Gerke built out his van and left the Keys with new uncertainties of the future, but confidence in his decision.

Curious about others since his early years, Gerke said the whole mission of his filmmaking adventure, called “Once a Stranger,” was to search for people from different backgrounds to better understand their struggles and triumphs. Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maine were among the stops for Gerke. He also visited the House of 5,000 Dolls in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

In the Keys, Gerke spent some time on the streets of Key West during Fantasy Fest. Gerke said the run-ins and connections made with different people helped shape who he is today.

“I learned about the Amish industry and farm industry in my travels.

And holy cow, no pun intended, but things are a mess for farmers,” he said. “I’ve done a couple surprise videos where I found people who were willing to drop everything they were doing and go on a surprise adventure. I even picked a guy up at the airport and took him skydiving.”

He also asked someone to be his granny for the day, and he even took her parasailing. His adventures can be viewed on YouTube and Instagram.

document that,” he said. “The idea was to start off with me reaching out to someone who’s making a positive impact or just interests me.”

Gerke’s last trip was on the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains in the little Tennessee town of Elizabethton. He was on a traditional summer fly-fishing trip with his family when he decided to explore. While never knowing how a filming might go, Gerke quickly saw the town’s Southern charm after visiting a local festival and a diner.

“I learned it was a cool town with a lot of awesome characters,” he said. “It was a really beautiful town, and I found that Jesus rules these towns. Religion is a very big deal in Appalachian culture.”

Among the memorable moments in his filming on the road was an Amish man. Gerke said the man never opened up to someone outside his community.

“He appreciated my willingness to learn about him and listen to what he had to say,” Gerke said. “At the end of the day, everybody has that same desire to be heard and loved.”

With life as a DJ back, Gerke is seeking to bring his video series to include his island neighbors as far south as Key West and north to the Everglades.

“Everyone has a whole story to tell,” he said. “If I have enough weddings and gigs to keep me in town for the next several months, I am going to start doing stuff here in the Keys and the Everglades. I’m looking for people, communities or industries that don’t get press often, or something people find interesting.

“Getting to meet your neighbor, I get to know them and create an experience,” he continued. That’s what I'm trying to showcase: the power of a simple ‘hello.’”

This week, Gerke is heading out on a stone crab boat as part of a commercial fishing series in the Keys. He’ll then head on a shrimp boat in mid-December, and he said he’s hoping to connect with other fisheries.

Gerke is a kiteboarder who went on a two-day, 100-mile trip in the Keys with his friend, Joe Tatangelo, in December 2020 to raise awareness about mental health. A little over $2,000 was raised to support mental health services in the Keys.

SCHOONER SKIRMISH ‘Alligator’ liberates ships from pirates

T

he U.S. schooner Alligator cultivated a rich story over its short life. It began in the Charlestown Navy Yard near Boston, where the 86-foot long ship-of-war was constructed.

The Alligator was one of five swift 12-gun schooners built to fight pirates and combat the slave trade. It also left a significant mark on the history of the Florida Keys.

The Alligator was commissioned in March 1821 and assigned to the West Indies Squadron under the command of Commodore James Biddle.

The Alligator’s inaugural mission was not just a military one, but largely one of a humanitarian nature. The schooner escorted representatives of the American Colonizing Society to the west coast of Africa. The objective of the society, founded in 1817, was to repatriate freed slaves. The purpose of the journey was to find land on which to create a colony.

In 1821, the colony was established at Cape Mersurado. Its largest settlement was named Monrovia and, in 1822, the territory was named Liberia. In 1847, it declared its independence and was recognized as the Republic of Liberia. By 1867, 13,000 freed slaves had arrived on Liberia’s shores.

The Alligator sailed back across the Atlantic Ocean, and, in June 1822, command of the schooner was assigned to Lieutenant William H. Allen. Allen was given orders to sail for the West Indies.

Including Allen and Lieutenant Dale, Allen’s second in command, the ship was armed with a crew of nine officers and 45 seamen and marines. By November, the Alligator was patrolling off the north coast of Cuba.

It was Nov. 8 when the ship sailed into the harbor at Matanzas. The events that followed the Alligator’s arrival in the port were accounted for in a letter by Dale, reprinted in the Philadelphia Gazette on Nov. 28, 1822. Dale wrote: “…informed that two American vessels were captured by the pirates, in a bay round Point Hicacos, about forty miles to the windward of this place. We immediately stood out, taking with us the captain of one, and the mate of the other vessel, who had been sent here to ransom them; as also a small American schooner, which the captain and merchants were fitting out.”

When the Alligator sailed out of the harbor, the small schooner Ploughshares followed. They came upon the captured ships the following morning. Dale wrote, “Early on the morning of the 9th, we discovered several to an anchor among the Stone Keys, near the cape, and a schooner getting under way; the water being shoal, we came to an anchor and manned the boats.”

The crew of the Alligator split up among the auxiliary ships and readied for battle. Lt. Allen, Captain Freeman, the master of the captured merchant vessel, and 13 men boarded the launch.

During the skirmish, the pirates wounded several marines, three mortally. Among those killed was Allen. Command of the Alligator shifted to his second in command, Dale. Nine days after the fight, Dale and the Alligator were escorting the liberated American ships and the captured pirate schooner Revenge to Norfolk, Virginia. One of the American ships, the Ann Maria, was a merchant vessel carrying a load of molasses.

Like most in the convoy, the Ann Maria was built for capacity and not for speed, and it did not take long for the convoy, including the Ann Maria, to fall behind.

Before leaving Matanzas, Dale learned that pirates were planning to attack the convoy’s stragglers. Dale’s concern only increased as the ships fell increasingly behind.

To slow the Alligator, Dale ordered the schooner to begin tacking maneuvers. Because the lieutenant understood the treacherous nature of these waters, he ordered soundings to gauge the depth of the water taken every 30 minutes. At 9 p.m., Nov. 20, the water showed 270 feet. About 30 minutes later, the Alligator came to a sudden halt as it ground against the shallow corals of the Matecumbe Reef.

In 1873, Alligator Reef Lighthouse was erected to warn passing sailors of the proximity of the dangerous corals. The reef was several miles offshore of the Matecumbe keys. Today, that reef is known as Alligator Reef. Both the reef and the light acknowledge the swift 12-gun schooner built to fight pirates and combat the slave trade that struck the reef in 1822.

TAKING FLIGHT Drones add to Coast Guard’s capabilities

ith eyes on water and on land, U.S. Coast Guard Station Islamorada also is taking to the sky, thanks to a program that’s introducing short-range drones.

On the grounds of Station Islamorada recently, three Coast Guard members looking to become certified drone pilots grabbed handheld controllers during a three-day training with instructors. Launching the station’s two drones into the air, two instructors stood by trainees as they maneuvered drones over the waters, scouring the mangroves of Snake Creek and surveying the scene from above before bringing them back for landing.

Trainees had to obtain an FAA Part 107 license before receiving training and a remote pilot certification to fly missions for the Coast Guard. Three newly certified pilots are expanding the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program in the U.S. and the Keys. Lt. Cmdr. Dominic Bucciarelli, program manager for the Coast Guard’s short range UAS, said the small drone introduction onto cutters and stations began in 2018, when authorization by Congress was given for their use by the Coast Guard. The intent of the program is twofold, he said.

“UAS can go into nooks and crannies and see things that crews normally can’t see. If a boat’s washed up, crews can shoot a drone straight across from their boat, see the tag numbers and contact the owner,” said Bucciarelli, who came down to the Keys from Department of Homeland Security headquarters in Washington, D.C. “It’s also offering us some civil engineering aspects. After a hurricane, we can do assessments a lot quicker instead of grabbing an expensive helicopter or plane.”

Seven units in the Coast Guard began using short-range drones during the start of the program three years ago. Today, Bucciarelli

said, 35 out of some 400 Coast Guard units in the country have drone deployment capabilities. Before the training in Islamorada, Bucciarelli was in Seattle to introduce the shortrange UAS. “We don’t just let any unit come on,” he said.

“We have each unit put in a request, and we see the geographic capability and if it will benefit them.”

Once the request is approved, trainees meet up with instructors at the station or another location. The training consists of presentations on policy for a day and two days of flight instruction. Bucciarelli said the training is hands-on.

“We get them out here and get them comfortable. We even put them in uncomfortable situations where they lose video feed just so they see what happens,” he said.

Among the instructors showing trainees how to launch and fly was Islamorada resident David Gross. A member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-8, Gross holds an FAA Part 107 drone pilot license and a Coast Guard SR-UAS pilot license. As a certified drone pilot, Gross has assisted Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation and NOAA in derelict vessel cases and prop scarring incidents.

Gross flew a derelict mission with FWC and a mission with one of the Coast Guard’s newly-certified pilots on Dec. 1. Gross said he’s grateful for the opportunity to train those interested in wanting to fly drones.

“It’s a great morale booster when you’re able to bring new operators on board, and it serves for a good purpose,” Gross said.

Bucciarelli said having a local with high drone-flying expertise, like Gross, is exactly what the Coast Guard is seeking for when it

comes to having instructors in different regions of the country. Matt James, commander of Station Islamorada, said it also shows the value of a Coast Guard Auxiliary to Coasties.

“There are skill sets they bring to the table that aren’t necessarily organic to us,” James said.

With drone-flying capabilities, James said, crews will have an easier time accessing parts of Florida Bay that are remote.

“This gives us the ability to get close by, put the UAS up and scout the mangroves and look beyond shallow spots,” he said. “It’ll make us more efficient and safer for our operators too. It’s hard to help folks if our boat is stuck in the mud.”

Offshore, James said use of drones will allow crews to look at objects quicker and move on to other searches.

“It gives us the capability of having two assets running patterns,” he said.

Use of short-range drones within the government have emerged over the years to support everything from firefighting and search and rescue to monitoring critical infrastructure — as Florida Department of Environmental Protection did in April to inspect the old 7-Mile and Bahia Honda bridges — and transportation of goods. Unmanned aircraft have grown so much interest that a bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, of Arizona, in September is seeking to establish a drone infrastructure grant program for governmental entities for infrastructure projects. The bill, which seeks $50 million in fiscal year 2022 and 2023, was referred to the Subcommittee on Aviation.

Marine debris is interesting because you never know what the haul will be. Everything from storms to passing boats to ocean currents can bring trash and other manmade objects to our reefs and shorelines. This is actually why land-based trash is so dangerous to the seas. Everything that flows down rivers and sewers ends up in the ocean. There, it can float around for years, getting tangled around corals, sea turtles, dolphins and other things we love.

he Key West girl’s varsity soccer team traveled north to face the Coral Shores Hurricanes on Nov. 30. In the end, the Lady Conchs were too much offensively for the Canes in a 5-2 victory. Teams went back and forth going into the first half with the Conchs up 2-1. In the second half, the Conchs scored three goals en route to victory. The Lady Conchs, 3-4, head on the road for a game at Somerset Academy Silver Palms, 3-0, on Friday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. The Lady Canes, 4-1, will go on the road to face St. Brendan in Miami on Monday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.

FEDERAL FUNDS ASSIST YOUNG ADULTS

T

he Florida Keys Children’s Shelter (FKCS) recently received a federal grant of $600,000 over a three-year period from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Children, Youth, and Families (ACYF) for the development of a new Transitional Living Program (TLP).

Transitional living services will be provided to young adults, ages 16 to 22, who may be homeless, aging out of foster care or in a variety of other situations which limit self-sufficiency.

Youth who are emancipated between the ages of 16 and 17 will be served at the TLP; otherwise they will be served

by FKCS’s Jelsema programs.

FKCS will offer individual and group counseling sessions with on-site support staff that will include case management, health and wellness, independent living skills, educational planning, career development and vocational training.

Outreach efforts directed toward community agencies will also support this program, and in turn, substantially satisfy a regional need for a safe, stable living environment for youth to learn or enhance their life skills, abilities and potential.

“I’ve been with the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter for 21 years. And for 21 years, I have watched hundreds of kids age out of services, with nowhere to go,” said Florida Keys Children’s Shelter CEO, Ben Kemmer. “I’m so proud to be part of this exciting new chapter with our organization.”

The Florida Keys Children’s Shelter TLP is designed to take the individual needs of each resident into consideration, but the goal for each individual is the same — to successfully make the transition into a responsible, independent, young adult.

“We could care for the kids until they are 18, but then they were sent away to Miami and beyond, for assistance in their last step, transitioning into adulthood,” said Brad Copeland, FKCS chairman. “Sending Keys kids to Miami at 18 years of age, with no job and no money, is a formula for failure.

Now with our new TLP program, our kids will be supported in a loving home environment, while they work through first jobs, college, trade school, or whatever path to success they choose.

FKCS is seeking to fill three positions for this new program: a case manager, a coordinator and a community specialist. All positions require a bachelor’s degree, as well as a minimum of two years related experience with runaway and homeless youth.

FIGHTING AGAINST FUR USE Global event raises awareness during Black Friday

i friends! Reef the fox here with another edition of “Reef’s Report.”

My mom was away this past weekend again, as she traveled back up to New York City for Fur Free Friday. This global day of action happens every year on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year to raise awareness and speak up for the 100 million animals that are killed around the world every year for their fur.

There were over 100 people handing out flyers, speaking out in front of stores like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Moncler. Then my mom and her friends ended at the Canadian Consulate General’s Office on Park Avenue to make it clear that banning fur farms in Canada is the right thing to do. Did you know the Canadian Government spent millions of dollars bailing out fur farms last year?

Mom said she saw so many people wearing real fur on the streets of New York CIty, and that makes me sad.

People walking their dogs and wearing fur! Doesn’t make sense, does it?

Anyway, you can help foxes like me by not supporting any of those companies until they make the commitment to stop selling fur.

There are some fun things going on in the next few weeks here in the Upper Keys. On Thursday, Dec. 2 at Buzzard’s Roost, MM 106, Marrvelous Pet Rescue is hosting its famous “Yappy Hour” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Go and get some good food, good drink and meet some of their adoptable pups. Wouldn’t it be amazing if some floofs got homes for the holidays?

On Saturday, Dec. 11, the Key

REEF THE FOX Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm.

He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

Largo Sunset Rotary Club will be having its annual Key Largo Boat Parade on Blackwater Sound. There are plenty of spots to view this parade on the water and on land, including Caribbean Club, Big Chill, Sundowners and the Marriott Resort.

It all starts at 7:30, so be sure to join one of our favorite local traditions, the Key Largo

Boat Parade.

At the Carribean Club, there will be live music on the outdoor stage by the Luke Sommer Glenn Band and food will be available from G’s Taco Truck. Come up early to grab a good seat! Chairs and blankets are welcome.

Get ready for Christmas With Coral on Dec. 18. Yep, Coral the fox will be back at One Grind KL to meet and greet with all of her friends. She may be joined by a very special guest if it all works out, so stay tuned for that. Mom will announce the time officially on our Facebook page, so if you aren’t following that yet, what are you waiting for?

• CLASSIFIEDS, PUBLIC & LEGAL NOTICES • NOTICE OF FINDING OF NO SIGNFICANT IMPACT AND NOTICE OF INTENT TO REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS December 2, 2021, City of Marathon, Voluntary Home Buyout Program 9805 Overseas Highway, Marathon, Florida 33050, 305-289-4109 These notices shall satisfy two separate but related procedural requirements for activities to be undertaken by the City of Marathon.

REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS On or about December 20, 2021, The City of Marathon will submit a request to the State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) for the release of Community Development Block Grant funds under Title I of the Housing and Community Development (HCD) Act of 1974, as amended, to undertake a project known as the Federally-Funded Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Voluntary Home Buyout Program for the purpose of acquiring properties within the City of Marathon, Florida that sustained substantial damage from Hurricane Irma that are in Special Flood Hazard Areas and in high-risk flood areas to reduce the impact of future disasters.

Assistance will be provided to qualified low to moderate income households with the focus on beneficiaries that do not have flood insurance on their properties. The City of Marathon received $5,000,000 to purchase and demolish housing units as determined by condemnation, flood levels and/or status as beyond reasonable repair and to relocate property owners outside the threat of flooding.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The City of Marathon has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. Additional project information is contained in the Environmental Review Record (ERR) on file at the City of Marathon Planning Department, 9805 Overseas Highway, Marathon, Florida 33050 and may be examined or copied weekdays 8:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M. It is also available online at the following website: www.ci.marathon.fl.us/planning/page/cdbg-voluntary-home-buy-out-grant-program.

ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION The City of Marathon certifies to the State of Florida DEO that George Garrett in his capacity as City Manager consents to accept the jurisdiction of the Federal Courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. The State’s approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities and allows the City of Marathon to use Program funds.

ifty artists are expected to take part in the ornament competition and online auction to be held at the 17th Annual Islamorada Holiday Fest on Friday, Dec. 3.

The event, put on by the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce, will last from 4 to 10 p.m. that evening on the beach at Founders Park.

“I love creating an ornament for the festival, as it is a fun way to kick off the season and get into the holiday spirit,” said Amy JoAn, this year’s featured artist, whose ornament, “Snowy Festivities,” depicts the festival itself created on a starry navy background.

JoAn can be found daily painting in her gallery Amy’s Creations of the Florida Keys at Rain Barrel in Islamorada.

In preparation for the auction, which is part of the festival’s Holiday

Gift Bazaar, each artist was given an unfinished ceramic piece to use as the base for his or her original creation.

Beyond that, the only design limit is their imaginations.

The finished pieces will be judged and on display throughout the festival, where they can be purchased by electronic auction bids at www.32auctions. com/ICC-2021. Bidding began on Dec. 1, and ends at 9 p.m. on festival night.

A portion of proceeds from the auction will benefit the local arts community.

The Islamorada Holiday Fest will feature a parade, visits and photos with Santa, a 30-ton snow mountain, a 35-foot tree blowing “magical” snow from its branches, a holiday gift bazaar, food and beverages, and live holiday stage performances.

KEYS LOVE AND AERIAL YOGA How timing led to a truth path for Georgia native MELINDA VAN FLEET www.keysweekly.com

lenda Renkes always dreamed of living by the water. So, after her two children left the nest, they both gave the Georgia native that little nudge to venture out.

She landed in the Keys 16 years ago.

Growing up a competitive gymnast, she had wanted to be a gymnast teacher but ended up getting married and having a baby at a young age. As she got older, she realized that gymnastics was strenuous on her body. So, years later, she fell in love with yoga after someone gave her a gift of 10 classes … and so it began.

Yoga shifted the overall awareness of her body versus being in a competitive mindset from gymnastics. And the timing of when she discovered yoga was a gift in general because her spouse was ill and ended up passing away from brain cancer. Yoga gave her an emotional outlet to help her through that extremely challenging time.

Renkes intensely trained in Baja, California, and lived in a tent with the other students for a month. In addition to the actual yoga movement training, they also had a day of silence where they couldn’t talk to anyone for 24 hours. They could only sit with their thoughts. (Imagine what that would be like). For Renkes, as well as the other students, it was a wild emotional experience.

While she was teaching yoga, she noticed an article about aerial yoga, which she had never heard of before.

Then a photo of someone doing the splits in the air inspired her to say, “I want to do that.”

Weeks later, the timing would be in her favor; a yoga school had certification classes for aerial yoga up in St. Petersburg. Shortly after that, she also got certified in paddleboard yoga.

As Renkes put it, “yoga on land, sea and air.”

She met her husband, Jason Renkes, initially at The Moose Club, and then they further connected at MM 88 (Talk about true Islamorada love). Now, Jason regularly does aerial yoga with the rest of the class when there is enough space.

“Men sometimes feel intimidated with yoga — period. But then with aerial yoga, they may feel they have to be very flexible, but as Jason has demonstrated, it’s not as hard as one would think,” she said.

“I wrestled in high school and college, so I realized the value of stretching to keep you in shape,” Jason said. “I never realized yoga was another avenue

to achieve that. It’s helped me a lot.”

How many aerial yoga poses are there, you may ask? Hundreds. People can incorporate any yoga pose that exists with the swing. Popular poses such as pigeon, downward dog and tree pose are easily adapted into aerial yoga. Not only is it a form of therapeutic fun, but it’s also strength training and can help with physical therapy.

Take it from me, who’s a new-found regular class attendee. Core exercise can be a strength training killer. One tiny movement for a few minutes can really burn.

In addition, Renkes tailors a lot of the movements for her students as she gets to know them. She can coach her students through poses for areas that need work. (So, maybe that’s a hint for me to work on my core?)

Suppose you meditate or appreciate a holistic experience. If so, you will be excited that Renkes incorporates reading passages, placing eucalyptus essential oil on your palms (if you desire), and enough time for Savasana — along with a lavender-scented eye pillow. These special touches round out the whole experience and help clear out any bad energy, so you are ready to start your day.

What is Savasana (or Shavanasa), you may ask? It’s the traditional final part of the yoga practice where you lay like a corpse and relax your body one muscle at a time. Savasana calms the mind and body. In aerial yoga, you do this tucked in the silk swing suspended from the ground — kind of like a butterfly in a cocoon regrouping and getting ready to emerge with a fresh start.

Renkes had this insight: “What message do they need to hear? I worry about that more than anything. Yes, this is the one they need to hear. And sometimes the wind will blow my page and mess up my message. But it brings me another page, so I better go ahead and read what is showing.
