AAA forecasts a strong rebound in holiday travelers this Thanksgiving. The Auto Club Group predicts 53.4 million Americans will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, up 13% from 2020. This brings travel volumes within 5% of prepandemic levels for the 2019 holiday. AAA predicts nearly 2.9 million Floridians will travel for Thanksgiving, a 13% rebound from the total number of travelers during the 2020 holiday.

‘WE NEED BUS DRIVERS’ THE SHORTAGE IN THE KEYS REFLECTS A NATIONWIDE CRISIS

ason Thomason, director of transportation for Monroe County School District, is blunt.

“We need bus drivers,” he said.

He explained that the district currently needs to find 10 candidates to fill the empty bus driver positions. Usually, the district has 50 drivers total to serve the needs of 2,000 students.

The empty positions create a busy day for Thomason. He usually has mechanics fill the vacant slots, or he has to pitch in himself and jump behind the wheel of a bus. He also gets creative with the routes.

“With Sugarloaf School, we had to stagger the schedule, doing first the middle school, then the kindergarten route,” he pointed out. “The middle school route is 7:30 and elementary is 8:30. We’re at half capacity with staff in Sugarloaf.”

But the school bus driver shortage is not only in the Keys, it’s “a nationwide crisis,” as Harry Russell pointed out at a recent school board meeting. Russell is the district’s executive director of personnel support and instructional leadership.

“Nationwide, it’s something that’s been building for a long time,” Russell told Keys Weekly.

“We have encouraged kids to go to college, but we’re realizing as a country that there are great jobs that exist without the need of college: electricians, plumbers, truck drivers and bus drivers. We have a great need for these positions, and there’s always a need for people with CDL licenses.”

“A national shortage of school bus drivers that started last year has become so severe that a number of states are taking drastic action, including calling on the help of the National Guard,” said a Forbes article in October. “With the return of in-person schooling, many school districts and bus businesses have attempted to lure back drivers with pay increases and bonuses (one local bus company in Connecticut started offering a $7,000 signing bonus for licensed school bus drivers), and have even started offering money to parents to drive students.”

Russell said the district has discussed giving out signing bonuses

but has no plans to do so — yet.

Thomason said the reason for the local crisis is multi-faceted.

“Probably one of the biggest challenges we have is that it has become onerous to get a CDL license,” he said. “But also, too, you have the local culture of the medical use of certain things, and we have random drug testing. That takes out another huge segment of people. Then you throw in the cost of living.”

The work schedule also isn’t for everybody: there’s a shift in the morning of two to three hours, a gap for three hours, then an afternoon shift of three to four hours. Russell said the gap hours in the middle of the day are problematic.

“What we have done is offer bus drivers the opportunity to pick up an extra 25 dollars an hour during that gap,” Russell said. “They can stay in the school and help security or during lunch time.”

Another challenge? Well, the job is just plain difficult.

“Let’s face it,” said Russell. “You have to like kids. Putting 50 kids at your back while you’re facing forward can be a challenge. You’re navigating U.S. 1, which can be very dangerous.

And kids can be kids and be mischievous and do their thing.”

But the job has its rewards. Thomason said the pay is among the highest in the state, and Russell said another big reward is, well, kids can be kids.

“Many of these kids, the first thing they see in the morning is the bus driver, and at the end of day, it’s the last person they see. You tell them to have a good evening and do their homework,” said Russell. “There’s no greater reward than seeing kids attain their goals.”

PROTECTING THE MANATEES FWC, U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE AIM TO CURB RISING DEATHS

T

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) are working to address a manatee unusual mortality event (UME) along Florida’s Atlantic coast. The agencies are standing up a joint team under the emergency response Incident Command System (ICS).

FWC chairman Rodney Barreto and Shannon Estenoz, assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks at the Department of the Interior, met recently to discuss their agencies’ manatee conservation efforts, already well underway in response to the UME and other efforts.

The announcement of the joint incident management team underscores the commitment the Service and FWC share in addressing threats to manatees, especially in light of an FWC announcement on Nov. 17, indicating 1,003 manatees – more than 10% of Florida’s estimated population – have died since the start of 2021.

Responding to the UME requires the joint efforts of numerous federal, state and private partners including the Service, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, St. Johns River Water Management District, Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, Brevard County, and Florida Power and Light. The ICS provides a common hierarchy that enhances the effectiveness of the response.

“Service and FWC staff, along with the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership, have been actively responding to the UME and are further strengthening their response as this unprecedented emergency continues to unfold,” said Estenoz. “Setting up a joint incident management team within the ICS framework strengthens the work already underway by streamlining administrative processes and by ensuring responders have the resources they need when and where they are needed.”

FWC staff and their many partners are on the front line in the UME response.

“We take this situation seriously and are committed to working with our partners including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to explore short-term solutions to the die-off, as well as much-needed long-term solutions to restoring the lagoon ecosystem,” said Barreto.

Researchers have attributed the UME to starvation due to the lack of forage in the Indian River Lagoon. Historically, the lagoon has provided essential habitat to manatees year-round, and during the colder winter months many manatees depend on warm water refuges in this area.

The FWC and the Service are working closely with partners to continue investigating the mortality event and exploring a variety of proactive options to assist manatees in the affected area.

The goal is to restore the Indian River Lagoon to a healthy state, which will benefit manatees and other wildlife.

Thanksgiving leftovers may seem heavenly the day after the most gluttonous meal of the year. But when it comes down to using up the last remaining pieces a few days later, usually the creativity runs out and most resort to the microwave or the trash can.

To prevent this, we asked Keys residents for their Thanksgiving leftover recipes, and were delighted to receive some very outof-the-box ideas. Hopefully one or more of these locals can help turn your last few Tupperwares into a savory meal.

In a pot, combine leftover veggies and turkey pieces, pour leftover gravy over the top and simmer. Pour into the dish with the crescent roll dough. Cover it with more dough and bake until dough is browned, usually about 15 minutes.

Years making Thanksgiving dnner: I started helping my mom as a teenager. Do I really have to say how many decades ago?

Favorite leftover meal: Turkey tetrazzini Is it for breakfast/lunch/dinner/ anytime: Good for dinner, lunch and even special events.

Explain how the leftover meal is made: My Mom was a terrific cook. She actually took classes for several weeks at Julia Child’s school when we lived in France. While she could produce a complicated gourmet dish, she never scorned a good old-fashioned casserole. This one combined leftover chopped turkey, cooked spaghetti, cream of mushroom soup, Velveeta cheese, and chopped pimientos. We ate it with a basic garden salad and biscuits from a can. The list of ingredients doesn’t sound promising or healthy but the results were delicious. I made the dish in big quantities for at least two bridal showers and the guests loved it. Can also be done with chicken breast.

Roll up whatever you have left over (my favorites are mashed potatoes, stuffing and turkey).

Place inside a Pillsbury crescent roll and roll together. Feel free to drizzle more gravy on top. Set the oven to 350 for about 30 minutes. I like to dip mine in gravy and my cranberry sauce!

Years making Thanksgiving dinner: I don’t make the whole meal, just help with sides Favorite leftover meal: Cranberry turkey crescent roll Is it for breakfast/lunch/dinner/ anytime: Lunch or dinner Explain how the leftover meal is made: You will need 2 Pillsbury crescent roll cans. Connect the short, straight edge ends of the triangle rolls so that the points are sticking out to form a sun-like ring of crescents. Next, make your leftover filling in a bowl.

I usually chop up some turkey and string beans and add stuffing, sweet or mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese, or basically anything except the cranberry sauce. Then spread out the leftover mixture into a wreath shape on the solid area of your crescent sun. Wrap the points into the center to create your wreath and bake for roughly 20 minutes at 350°. Once it cools slightly, you can add the leftover cranberry sauce or gravy in the middle of the ring. The beauty of this recipe is that if you use your family’s leftovers, it’s your own original recipe!

Years making Thanksgiving dinner: I always helped my great-grandmother, grandmother and mom when I was a kid. I started making my own in 1980. I was living in Tooele, Utah at the time. I worked at the hospital there, and we all split the holiday hours up in four-hour shifts so we could be home with family. Every year I would invite anyone I knew that didn't have family around.

Favorite leftover meal: Pilgrim sandwich Is it for breakfast/lunch/dinner/ anytime: Lunch Explain how the leftover meal is made: Take a hoagie roll, some other kind of roll, or even just a slice of bread. Make a sandwich. Turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. Some people put mayonnaise on it, and I like to put some gravy on it. Voila! A Pilgrim sandwich.

BRIEFLY Help needed to send care packages to military For the past 10 years, Tony Daiuto of Antique Aircraft Restorations has been helping to send annual care packages to deployed military. The boxes include items such as toiletries, food and snacks and will be sent by Dec. 4 to allow shipping time before Christmas.

“What we need is donations of any kind, even monetary, as it is very expensive to ship a box,” said Daiuto. The boxes are large U.S. priority mail packages.

Donations can be dropped off at Island Tire, located at 1326 107th Street Gulf, Marathon. The project’s volunteers are also asking the public for APOs and FPOs, a.k.a military addresses of anyone they know who is deployed overseas.

‘MY SANDWICH!’ How to make Monica’s famous ‘Moist Maker’ from ‘Friends’

Our list of leftover ideas would be incomplete without arguably the most famous post-Thanksgiving meal of them all. Made popular by the “Friends” episode “The One With Ross’s Sandwich,” Monica’s “Moist Maker” sandwich is good enough to drive Ross “mental” when it is stolen from his work fridge. While we hope a sandwich theft wouldn’t inspire white-hot rage in our readers, here is the recipe for all to enjoy. (For an extra thrill, say the words “MY SANDWICH!” just before taking a bite) INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

FOR GRAVY: 3 tbsp. butter 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1/2 cup turkey pan drippings 1 tsp. freshly chopped thyme 1 tsp. freshly chopped rosemary 2 cups low-sodium chicken or turkey broth Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper

Make gravy: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook until golden, 1 minute, then whisk in pan drippings. (If you have more than a 1/2 cup of drippings, use it and reduce the amount of broth!)

Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently until slightly thickened. Stir in fresh herbs, then whisk in broth and return mixture to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper.

Simmer for 10 minutes, gradually adding more broth if gravy is too thick. Season with salt and pepper. Let cool slightly.

Make herb mayo: In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, mustard, and fresh herbs.

Spread herb mayo on one side of 6 pieces of bread. Dip remaining 3 pieces of bread into gravy, making sure plenty soaks in.

Build a sandwich by placing turkey on a mayonnaise spread piece of bread, then top with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, a gravy soaked piece of bread, stuffing, arugula, and another mayonnaise spread piece of bread. Repeat with remaining ingredients to make 2 more sandwiches.

FOR HERB MAYO 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 tbsp. dijon mustard 2 tsp. freshly chopped parsley 1 tsp. freshly chopped thyme 1 tsp. freshly chopped chives FOR THE SANDWICH 9 slices white bread, toasted 1 lb. leftover turkey, sliced 1 cup leftover mashed potatoes 1 cup cranberry sauce 1 cup leftover stuffing Arugula

TURKEY AND PIGSKIN A feast and some football mark Thanksgiving tradition

s the famed ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman would say, we’re “rumblin,’ bumblin’ and stumblin’” into the holiday season.

Family and friends will gather around the table, sharing a feast and fond stories of past times. For many households, the TVs will be on as part of another turkey day tradition. NFL football on Thanksgiving Day goes back some 87 years. Despite a brief stoppage during World War II, football became a staple of the American holiday.

This year, there’s a little bit more to be thankful for, coming out of 2020, a year that saw empty stadiums for the majority of NFL games due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Coupled with fans back in the stands is a 2021 season that expanded from 16 to 17 games, as well as an additional wild card spot in the AFC and NFC playoffs. The Cowboys, with a 31-21-1 record on Thanksgiving Day games, welcome a spiraling Las Vegas Raiders team to AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys, 7-3, still lead the NFC East division despite coming off a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, while the Raiders, 5-5, remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

"My favorite thing about playing on Thanksgiving is we're the only team playing at that time, all eyes on us," Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott told ESPN. "Everyone is watching. We've got the stage so we just have to go out and handle our business."

An interesting matchup will round out a day of football in the NFL, as the Buffalo Bills, 6-4, travel to face the New Orleans Saints, 5-5. It will be the Bills’ 10th appearance on Thanksgiving and their fifth since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. The Saints will play their fourth Thanksgiving Day game, and they are undefeated on the holiday.

The game will be extra special for Saints fans, as former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees returns. He’ll call the game for NBC alongside Mike Tirico.

With games on Thanksgiving also come some interesting games on the weekend following. As there seems to be a number of Ohio State Buckeyes fans on the island chain, the No. 2-ranked team will travel to Ann Arbor to face the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 27 at noon. In golf, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will put their antics and chirping to the side as they go head to head for the fifth edition of The Match on Friday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The match will be broadcast on TNT. Enjoy the holidays and all the sports this season.

APPLE’S SELF SERVICE REPAIR GIVES CONSUMERS THE ABILITY TO REPAIR THEIR OWN DEVICES

K

eys customers with newer Apple products will soon have the ability to avoid a mainland road trip for device repairs at the nearest Apple store.

The question is: should they?

Announced on Nov. 17, Apple’s new Self Service Repair program provides individual consumers with access to genuine Apple parts, tools and repair manuals that allow for repairs of commonly serviced modules in their largest product lines (think: screens, batteries and cameras). Beginning in early 2022, the program will be available first for Apple’s iPhone 12 and 13 lineups, followed by Mac computers featuring Apple’s proprietary M1 chips.

“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams.

Apple has long been notorious for making it difficult to service their products outside of a closed ecosystem of repair technicians.

For years, most devices could effectively only be serviced by Apple itself, either through retail stores or mail-in repair services.

Though independent technicians still provided repairs outside of Apple’s approved network, these repairs were rarely able to use genuine Apple parts, and most services performed by third-party technicians would void warranties and prevent Apple “geniuses” from servicing a device over the remainder of its life.

However, the company’s recent efforts have expanded access to the parts, tools and training necessary to service their devices.

In 2019, the Independent Repair Provider program enabled individual repair shops to service Apple products, eventually adding more than 2,800 providers to a network of 5,000 established Apple authorized service providers.

Still, consumers desired the ability to service their own products. “Right to repair” legislation, enabling consumers to repair their devices through a store or technician of their choosing, has gained heavy momentum as customers fight back against “planned obsolescence” in older devices. The new Self Service Repair program seems to be a concession to these demands.

Although the new program puts the power in the hands of consumers (and may be a boon for former Apple technicians looking to make some cash on the side), many caution strongly against the dangers of self-taught electronics surgery.

“To me, it’s a joke,” said Victor Figueroa, owner of Keys Smartphone Repair. “The average person cannot do this. It’s taken me years to learn and get good at. In the beginning it cost me a lot of money, and I screwed up some phones and had to buy new ones.”

Figueroa particularly pointed to lithiumion battery replacements as cause for concern. “The batteries are very, very dangerous,” he said, explaining that puncturing the old batteries from the poking and prodding during the removal process is extremely hazardous. “I’ve had someone come in here with their hair burned off their face because they accidentally stabbed the battery,” said Figueroa. “In the forums I’m a part of, we’re all laughing at it. There’s so much that can go wrong.”

Figueroa isn’t lying, and part of Apple’s former hesitancy to service devices after they have been touched by non-authorized technicians is well-founded. This reporter has personally watched a friend’s phone spontaneously combust in his hand after improper installation of a replacement battery.

Apple cautions most inexperienced consumers against attempting repairs, stating, “Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider … is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.”

Though Apple’s exact prices have yet to be announced, Figueroa estimates that for most consumers, it will still be safer, more cost effective and faster overall to visit a third-party repair shop than to buy the tools, parts and repair manuals. And not to worry, folks: he’ll still be there, even if Keys residents botch their first attempts.

“In the end it’s probably better for me,” he said, laughing. “They’ll come see me and I’ll have to undo whatever they did.”

FISHERMEN’S, MARINERS STAFF TRAIN WITH TRAUMA STAR Monroe County Fire Rescue’s Trauma Star, the air ambulance service based in Marathon, recently flew one of its helicopters to both Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Mariners Hospital as part of an ongoing educational program intended to strengthen the knowledge of the hospitals’ caregivers so they, in turn, can provide the very best care to patients and families. During the drill, the helicopter reached Fishermen’s Community Hospital in five minutes and Mariners Hospital in roughly 15 minutes — a quick response time that can be critical when life-saving interventions are needed.

While on site, the Trauma Star team provided employees at both hospitals with a brief overview of what to expect when a patient transfer is needed. They addressed the requirements for air transfer, maximum wind speeds in which they can fly and their capabilities for treating patients in the air. The team also pointed out that only minors can be accompanied by an additional person in the helicopter.

The training session enabled the hospital staff members to ask questions and learn valuable information that will help them prepare patients and families and speak knowledgeably on behalf of Trauma Star when arranging a transfer.

“The annual training is part of a collaboration we have with Monroe County Trauma Star,” said Dawn Hire, director of nursing in the Emergency Department at Mariners and Fishermen’s Community Hospitals. “We also meet every other month to review patient data and cases to provide optimal care and better patient outcomes.”

“Our partnership with Trauma Star and Baptist Health has saved countless lives when seconds and minutes mean the most,” said Steve Hudson, Monroe County Fire Chief.

These artists compose things a little differently, but they often influence our lives in very positive ways. They help us build fond memories, they offer up friendship, make us laugh, work complex and colorful chemistry projects before our very eyes and they do it all in perfect synchrony. Sadly, much of what they do is often completely overlooked. Many of these artists are also highly skilled at multitasking between the mixology, calculating mathematics at the point of sale system, and some even offer therapy sessions for the down-and-outers. As the live music cranks up nightly, as we smile and laugh with our friends and coworkers alike, behind those varnished wooden bar-tops, stand the artists hard at work. Sure, they create our libations, a simple means to an end at first glance, but there is something more we really must acknowledge. These so-called “service workers” are composing for us something requiring a unique skill set, and — dare I say? — a talent. This talent is a large part of what’s keeping our vital tourism industry alive and flourishing.

I have always enjoyed “people watching” during my travels and, prior to making the Keys my home, it was fun to do it at those things mainlanders call shopping malls. It is fascinating for me to watch humans doing what human beings do. One popular pastime for us here in the Keys is visiting the local bars and eateries. We get to soak up majestic sunsets and listen to live tunes while watching pink and white-striped tourists busy juggling conversations and smiles, slurping rum drinks down, and even dancing, or something resembling dancing. Aside from airport terminals, this is probably

my favorite kind of people watching.

The most common setup used for frying turkeys is a large propane burner topped with a tall 30 quart pot. If your pot has been used before and banged around from months or years of storage, fill it with water and ensure there are absolutely no pinhole leaks. I have personally been mere minutes from a trip to the emergency room when I realized one of my trusty pots had a slow drip of oil over a lit propane burner.

GIVING A LIFT Pilot from Marathon Airport is helping veterans

W

ounded veterans often live a long distance from the services they need to deal with their injuries.

Travel on commercial airlines can be difficult for them. The Veterans Airlift Command, a non-profit organization, coordinates flights for veterans with pilots who offer their time, airplane and expenses. These flights occur throughout the United States and here in Florida.

On June 18, 2021, local Keys pilot Jabe Luttrell donated his time and airplane to accomplish two missions for Veterans Airlift Command. The first was for Army Staff Sgt. Jason Dodd, who served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He spent more than 11 years in the infantry, two years as a Ranger Instructor, and three years as a combat diving supervisor. Dodd was medically retired as the result of his combat injuries and suffers from TBI, PTSD, and chronic pain in his back.

Dodd’s mission involved travel from Destin to Key Largo for a Wounded Warriors Scuba Dive at John Pennekamp State Park. He helped train a quadriplegic veteran and dove with him during the event. What was important to Dodds is that during a dive, the quadriplegic feels freer and less restricted.

Because Key Largo has no airport, Luttrell and Jenna Diebel of the Veterans Airlift Command coordinated with Erica Torres, the Ocean Reef Club airport manager, to use the private Ocean Reef Club airport as a convenient destination to minimize Dodds’ ground travel. The alternatives would have been long drives from Key West or Homestead. While many of us do make these long drives, the drive is particularly uncomfortable or even painful for someone living with war wounds.

This coordination also allowed the pilot for the return trip, Lance Boxer, to land at Ocean Reef Club.

A second mission brought triple amputee Marine veteran Sgt. Carlos Evans from his home in the Orlando area to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In May 2010, Evans stepped on an IED, resulting in the loss of both legs and his left arm. This tour was his fourth and final deployment. Evans spent two years at Walter Reed Medical Center and now lives in Florida with his wife and two daughters.

This second mission consisted of two flights, reducing the cost burden for each pilot. Maria Miles of the Veterans Airlift Command coordinated the two-leg mission. The first flight leg, flown by Luttrell, was from Orlando to Mount Pleasant; the second, from Mount Pleasant to Manassas, Virginia, was flown by Chris DiPaola. Returning to Walter Reed will allow Evans to continue months of physical therapy to integrate

new prosthetic legs with the remaining portions of his femurs.

These are just two of the many Veterans Airlift Command flights that occur every day. There are typically 60 missions to accomplish at any given time. The flights occur throughout the United States and are conducted completely by general aviation volunteer pilots. More than 1,018 pilots have contributed more than 6,130 flights.

About one third of the pilots (345) have just begun completing missions, while a few have completed more than 100 missions.

WEDDING THANKS, PART 2 It was a big wedding…

I

knew as soon as I put the last column to bed that I must have missed people who deserved recognition — it was a big day for a couple of really good causes, and so many gave so much of their time and efforts to make it happen. This week, I’ll get a chance to thank those people I missed last week and show our love back to all who helped us out.

Who could forget our Master of Ceremonies at the Big Reception? In one of his last acts as Mayor of Marathon, Luis Gonzalez ran the stage and kept things moving. Sarah and I are grateful for your and Jackie’s friendship throughout the years, as well as your record of service to our community.

There are so many really good photographers in Marathon, and it was tough to decide who would document our wedding. Yeni Matie, of Matie Photography, was amazing, kind, gentle and flowed with the twists and turns of our day. She captured so many wonderful moments, and we truly appreciate her kindness and her beautiful images.

I mentioned Chris Still and his savory pork sliders in my last column — they were so good! She can easily handle small lot orders of custom Tshirts and embroidered items (like my Perpetual Island Tour ballcaps).

I know I wrote about our Take Stock in Children students, Synthia and Dakota, who stood up for us at our wedding. If you’ve ever considered becoming a Take Stock mentor, the program is in need of at least a dozen, especially for male students. It takes an hour a week, and I can attest from personal experience that it’s at least as rewarding for the mentor as it is for the student.

The Take Stock program is rather incredible: students sign a contract at the outset and must keep up good grades and stay out of trouble. Parks and rec youth basketball clinics are starting up The City of Marathon Parks and Recreation department is offering a series of basketball clinics for different age groups. The schedule is as follows.

On Mondays and Wednesdays, Nov. 29, Dec. 1, Dec. 6, Dec. 8, Dec. 13 and Dec. 15, boys ages 7 and 8 are invited to attend the clinics from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., while boys ages 12 to 14 are invited to attend the clinics from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

CRAPPY BUSINESS CONTINUITY OF CARE Who is in charge of your health?

C

ontinuity of care is an important concept in medicine. With that said, there are differing models of how we implement it.

The traditional model is the one where a patient sees the same provider for years and even decades, developing a relationship that encompasses the patient’s entire health history, and includes the impacts that DR. In this respect, continuity of care is the seamless integration of these specialists and the primary care provider and communication between them.

The primary care provider is present in both models, as is the patient, obviously.

In my career, I have viewed my place as a primary care provider as similar to an offensive or defensive coordinator on a football team. I am not in charge (I realize that some providers and patients may think that is blasphemy) but I do have significant latitude to collect, analyze and recommend appropriate plays to the head coach. That also means we need to have a head coach, and that is where the patient comes in. Not only are they the player on the field, but they are the head coach as well.

You are in charge of your health care. I can’t make you get a test, take a pill, exercise or not eat Twinkies. I can help you make choices for you, can help guide you to the right tests, specialists and treatments. But ultimately, you have to decide what actually happens.

Lastly, I would like to touch on the second model from a practical standpoint. Vertically integrated healthcare is a pipe dream. (More blasphemy, you say.) Just here in Monroe County, we have multiple hospital systems, multiple medical groups, private practice surgeons, urologists, cardiologists and primary care. I could go on. Most of us use different electronic record systems that don’t talk with each other. We also have patients that may have a summer primary care provider in a completely different state. They may do their annual testing and preventative medicine with them or here.

Why is this important? It further supports that you are in charge of your healthcare. If you see specialists, or have tests done, go to the ED, etc., get a copy of your chart and any testing results. Share those with your primary care provider(s). That way we can give you the best options to choose from before you run the next play.

n a time not long ago, I could readily find anchorages with little or no one in them. The seclusion was always a happy respite from the culturized world. I could drift around fishing from my dinghy for hours on end without interruption. Nowadays it seems that most anchorages are full to the shoreline and dinghy drifts are social events where throngs of dinghies raft up to have a sundown party. The islands have a greater water circulation than most regions, but still the waste goes somewhere.

Here in the U.S., most marinas have pump-out facilities. Holding tanks are woefully small on most boats, which puts even well-intentioned captains in a stinky position. It is simply too easy to turn the Y valve, pump and start fresh.

But there is a better solution both home and abroad for us all.

Composting units for boats are more cost-effective, easier to maintain, and simplify a traditionally serious plumbing system. A compost head does away with the holding tank and the necessity for a pumpout. The compost product can be safely deposited in any trash can or sprinkled around on existing dirt. The urine is a little different situation. Urine is mostly sterile. I say “mostly” because it does have a cocktail of microbes in it, but they are harmless to large bodies of water. While I would really rather you dump your urine in a toilet in a marina, it is far safer to pump overboard than the turds.

The Florida Keys are a No Discharge Zone (NDZ) and a few other locations are seriously considering legislation to the same end. It is amazing to me that this issue is even open for discussion. Is there really enough here to discuss? Why can’t we simply make all waters an NDZ? At the end of the day, please ask yourself if you are willing to dive into the water immediately after you dump any of your waste into it.

If the answer is not only no but … then maybe you should reconsider.

And don’t even make me talk about oil, gas, diesel fuel etc. etc.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Marathon High School has the Student Government Association organized into five levels. For each high school class, there is a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. In addition to the class officers of each grade level, there are SGA officers. These officers can only be seniors. Their job is to keep order over all the classes and to ensure that the councils of each grade level come together to compare ideas throughout the year, particularly before major events. The student government is made up of just under 30 members who are all directed by the school's leadership class teacher, Christina Belotti.

These students are in charge of all class events. For example, the senior class needs to ensure that everything is prepared for the first day of school and graduation, and the junior class is responsible for putting on the prom.

Another important job of the student government is to set an example for the rest of the school. During weeks such as homecoming spirit week, members must dress the theme “to the 10s,” as it is very important to show other students that it is cool and fun to participate in school activities. It is also their responsibility to attend the majority of class and school functions, such as float building and the homecoming parade.

SGA’s next major event will be a Christmas spirit week before winter break in December.

encouraged the young member to begin running longer distances. After some consideration, Merryman and a few other friends decided to join the team together.

As a 7th grader, Maeve outran all other female MHS runners, placing second on the team at their district meet while running alongside sophomore Mikkel Ross. After that race, Merryman got the fire she needed to push herself into the first place position. She was the top MHS finisher at both the regional and state meets. “At each race I shaved about a minute in time. By the time I qualified for states, I worked myself from a 26 minute 5K to 22 minutes,” said Merryman.

After never running such long distances before, Merryman says she was very surprised at how well she had done. She was especially shocked because she wasn’t able to make every practice due to schedule conflicts with the fall cheerleading squad.

“Maeve had a great first season.

She has the mental toughness that is needed to be great at the sport. I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do in the 3,200 meter race this track season,” said Murphy.

MHS GIRLS SOCCER TEAM FOCUSES ON CONSTANTLY PLAYING BETTER. The Marathon girls soccer team has been on a steady path toward success this season. The team is young, with just one senior returning from last year’s roster.

To begin the season, a trio of 8th graders started the first few games as the team awaited the return of the state-qualifying cross country team members. The Lady Fins opened their season with a setback against district opponent Westwood Christian, losing 6-0 after arriving just moments prior to kickoff.

First year coach Tracy McDonald said, “We had a transportation issue beyond our control and arrived a few minutes before the game was supposed to begin.

Westwood was sympathetic to our situation, but couldn’t really do much about the start time due to the fact that there is no lighting at their field.”

The Fins piled off the bus and onto the field and did their best, but were not able to find their rhythm during the game. Two days later, their skills were put to the test against perennial powerhouse St. Brendan Academy, a school two divisions larger than Marathon. St. Brendan brought two buses and enough players for two full teams. The Fins, on the other hand, had to rely on players from their middle school roster as they were still missing cross country athletes and had three other players out with injuries. The game ended early in a mercy rule decision, leaving the team frustrated but still positive. “We started four middle school girls, and five played a good part of the game,” McDonald said, adding, “I don’t think many other varsity teams rely so heavily on middle school students, but we did, and the girls really stepped up and played hard. Most importantly, nobody gave up.”

They used that positivity to play an exciting game against better-matched Florida Christian on Nov. 12. The Fins held the Patriots to just one goal per half and had a half dozen shots on goal themselves, but were not able to place any into the net.

This past week, the Lady Fins took to the road and played SLAM Academy on the turf at Curtis Field. An early goal by SLAM would be the lone score of the game.

Though the Fins were disappointed with the loss, the final score showed marked improvement from just a week and a half prior.

“We knew this would be a process and we knew it would be a fight.” McDonald said. Several players had never set foot on the field before this season, so the early season has mostly revolved around teaching the basics of the game. “Our team roster has less experience than most, but what we lack in soccer experience, we more than make up for in athleticism and positivity. We are going to have some struggles this season. We know that, and we will work on it every day, focusing on what we can control and letting go of what we cannot. We are determined to play together, improve together, and try to make a run at Districts.”

The Lady Dolphins are on a week-long break for Thanksgiving, but will be back at it next week for a home game on Dec. 3 against Rivera Prep.
