Monroe County School District challenged in response to racist school incidents ALEX RICKERT

n the wake of racist graffiti left on a Marathon High School water fountain, the Monroe County School District faced questions about how to resolve an environment at MHS that one parent described as “toxic and hostile.”

In early September, a student wrote the words “white” and “colored” above two adjacent MHS water fountains, a reference to the days of racial segregation. The word “privilege” was later added under “white,” while “black” and “negro” were inscribed under “colored.”

Speaking in the citizen input section of the Nov. 16 school board meeting, 18-year Monroe County resident and parent Stephanie Scuderi criticized the district’s action to address what she described as “a symptom of a more pervasive problem.”

Describing an incident in which the same water fountain offender used Snapchat to share racial slurs about a student with that student’s entire class, Scuderi told the board that “the (targeted) student and the family still bear feelings of shame, disrespect and lack of belonging within a community they themselves grew up in.” She informed the board that the incident prompted the family to consider leaving the Keys in order to “find a better community.”

Scuderi went on to challenge the extent of the school’s response to related issues. “There is a very real perception out there that matters of this nature get swept under the rug,” said Scuderi. “Overcoming that perception is just one challenge for the school district.”

“We need to find a way to infuse a base level of kindness and respect,” she continued. “Meanness, deliberate acts of unkindness and disrespect, these are actions born solely out of ill will. To deny the intended offense is to pull the wool over our own eyes.”

Superintendent Theresa Axford told the board that the district is taking the situation “very seriously.”

Axford went on to describe a campaign to be launched in the near future at MHS, titled “We Don’t Talk Like That Here.”

“The intention,” she said, “is to avoid any kind of inappropriate speech that features bigotry, racial profiling, homophobia, name calling, all of those things that make people feel hurt or ridiculed.”

Axford cited the COVID-19 pandemic and popular music with “quite horrific” lyrics as factors that impacted and divided students over periods of virtual schooling and split schedules.

“Students haven’t had the opportunity to interact with one another or have that continuous growth that occurs when they work in classrooms and with teachers,” she said. “They’ve gotten into camps, and in those camps there is some inappropriate speech and discussion about others that’s been going on.”

The district has worked to create a more standardized baseline consequence for similar future issues, beginning with a two-day out-of-school suspension. “If you do things outside on your own it may be different, but in school there is appropriate speech, and everybody has to honor and recognize that,” said Axford. “School requires civility.”

Newly reelected board chair John Dick cautioned against giving too much weight to mitigating factors. “We can come up with excuses and COVID is this and COVID is that, but it’s too important of an issue, and it’s completely unacceptable,” said Dick. “You can’t let it sit at all. There have to be severe consequences to put a stop to it immediately. Maybe some of it’s in jest, but they have to put a stop to that completely too. I think the consequences should be fast and severe.”

Board member Sue Woltanski took Dick’s comments a step further. Holding up her phone, she stated, “these kids are doing it with this. It’s not like when we were kids and you were protected from the other kids at home.

Some of the language of ‘We Don’t Do That Here’ has to extend to the cyber world after school.”

Woltanski added that most board members were not informed of the incident until after media outlets published their reports. “It was a significant enough incident and it occurred long enough before it was in the newspaper that this board should have been aware of it before we saw it on the front page of the paper,” said Woltanski.

“I do apologize that you learned of it in that manner,” replied Axford.

WE GOT CRABS The elusive ‘ditch diggers’ are crawling back into traps — and fetching higher prices CHARLOTTE TWINE

f you have a Keys stone crab fisherman or -woman in your life, they might be a little happier this week. The past few days have been a sweet spot for finding crabs in their traps and selling their product at higher prices to the local fisheries.

“Prices did escalate for boat prices,” said Gary Graves, vice president at Marathon’s Keys Fisheries Market & Marina, which buys stone crabs from commercial fishermen then sells them to the public. “So retail prices go up.

And wholesale prices went up. Also, the last 10 or 12 days, production went up. A cold front has stirred the bottom up and down the state. This is great news for the fishermen. And there’s a strong demand in January and December — tourist season. It’s still too early to tell. We hope for a good season. We have several months to go.”

“When waters are clear, the predators to the crab have an easier time catching them,” said Bob Charney, the new owner of Key Largo Fisheries. “When the wind picks up with cold fronts, then water is less clear and the crabs are more confident to move around.”

But when the stone crabbing season started a month ago, the ‘ditch diggers’ — as Bill Kelly affectionately calls them — were being more elusive since the waters were clear at that point. Kelly is the executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association.

“The season got off to a slow start,” said Kelly. “In Miami and the Upper Keys area, crabbing has been on the

normal to on the plus side. It’s slow in the Middle Keys and about average in the Lower Keys. Until the past two weeks, we had warm weather and not much in the way of wind. So what's happened now is in the past week or so there’s been an uptick. With the fall weather systems, we’re getting reports of higher harvest levels.”

Fisheries are naturally shy about revealing the prices they pay to the boats coming in with product, but a peek at the retail prices tells a story. At the beginning of the season in midOctober, local fisheries were selling stone crab claws for $30 to $65 per pound retail, depending upon the size.

Now the black-tipped claws are going for $30 to $75 per pound retail.

And Kelly wants to assure our readers who love our waters and its creatures that the members of his association are working hard to protect the stone crab population.

“We formed a commercial stone crab advisory panel for Florida in 2014 to address the issue,” Kelly explained.

“We work with Dr. Ryan Gandy. He’s the FWC guru for the stone crab.

The industry and science have come together to manage the species in a sustainable way, and it’s working.”

Kelly pointed out that stakeholders approved an eighth of an inch increase in the minimum claw size that can be caught, to 2 and seven eighths inches.

“It’s going to increase crab biomass by 250,000 pounds per year. At a minimum, our goal is to increase the overall crab biomass population by a million pounds over five years,” he said.

But there is a bottom line, and locals, tourists — even online shoppers — seem to be happy to pay prices for the delicacy, especially as the holidays are just around the corner.

“We’re a 50-year-old local fishery, and we offer stone crab both retail and at the café,” said Charney of Key Largo Fisheries. “Come on down.”

heir proper name is the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships, but folks in Key West just call them “the boat races.”

The high-speed, high-performance, highdollar competition churned through Key West Harbor for three days of racing in several different categories of powerboats from Nov. 10-14.

The wind and chop prompted a few boats to flip, but no serious injuries were reported.

The week also included special events around town, crowds of spectators at all downtown waterfront viewing spots and a boat parade on Duval Street.

The popular event, presented by Race World Offshore, this year included a new trophy called the Cates Cup, in honor of former Key West mayor, current county commissioner and retired powerboat racer Craig Cates.

prestige series with major Hollywood players is set to film in the Keys in 2022.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the production has been ordered

by Apple and is based on the 2013 Carl Hiaasen novel “Bad Monkey.” The series will be 10 episodes to start and executive produced and starring Vince Vaughn of “Wedding Crashers” fame.

The showrunner? Bill Lawrence, who just swept the Emmys with the series “Ted Lasso” and created the sitcom “Scrubs.”

“A show like this would be really great for the Keys,” said Florida Keys film commissioner Chad Newman, who confirmed that the production company has been in touch with him.

“Production is starting to ramp up and look for locations. It will be produced

by Warner Bros. TV and start mid next year.”

“Bad Monkey'' will be adapted for the screen by Lawrence. The tale focuses on Vaughn’s character, Andrew Yancy, a former Miami cop who has been demoted to a health inspector.

Hoping to give his law enforcement career a boost, Yancy is trying to get to the bottom of how and why a severed human arm ended up being pulled from the sea by a sport fisherman in the Florida Keys. In typical Hiaasen fashion, corrupt hijinks and eccentric characters emerge.

Apple has been providing competition for streaming juggernauts Netflix and Amazon Prime by producing scripted original programming, with titles including “For All Mankind,” “Dickinson,” “Foundation,” “Home Before Dark” and “Invasion,” among others.

“Bloodline” was filmed in the Keys. The first season premiered in 2015. Newman pointed out that the first season of “Bloodline” had a budget of $30 million, and it generated $60 million in tourism impact.

“And to this day, ‘Bloodline’ fans are still coming to visit,” he said.

Chavez also said that the “Bloodline” actors became a part of the community, with lead actor Kyle Chandler’s band playing in local venues and other actors and crew hanging out at Café Moka.

So residents should keep an eye out in 2022 — maybe Vince Vaughn will be ordering a brew next to you at your favorite watering hole.

Edward T. Fischer 1941-2021

Edward T. Fischer of Millsboro, Delaware and formerly of Marathon, Florida passed away in his home surrounded by family on Nov. 10, 2021.

Ed was born on Dec. 19, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. He graduated from Middle Township High School. He participated in track and field, baseball and basketball. He graduated from Trenton State College in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and went on to obtain his master’s degree.

In 1966, he was drafted into the Army where he proudly served his country. In 1967, he became a commissioned officer and was assigned to Oakland Army Terminal for two years. Ed returned to Pennsylvania and served in the Army National Guard where he earned the rank of major. He taught science at Radnor Middle School and coached soccer, basketball, and high school track and field for the next three decades. He was head tennis pro at Friend’s Central Tennis Club for 21 summers.

In 1997, he retired and moved to Marathon, Florida, where he enjoyed playing guitar, tennis and golf with his friends. Ed had cozy winters in the Florida Keys and warm summers in Delaware. Ed also enjoyed taking many trips to Disney World and cruises with his family. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, William Robert Fischer and Blanche T. Fischer, and by his son, Robert T. Fischer. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Domzalski, (Dave); his grandchildren, Justin and Haley Domzalski; his sister, Barbara Hohman (Jan); his nephew, Scott Fellenbaum; and many special friends who he always considered his extended family.

Services are private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Ed’s name to Amedisys Foundation c/o Compassionate Care Hospice, 20165 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Rigoberto “Rigo” and Raisa Gonzalez (1947/1954-2021)

Rigoberto “Rigo” (age 74) and Raisa (age 66) Gonzalez left this world four minutes apart on Aug. 21, 2021. Their love for each other was unmatched and their love story was truly remarkable. Nothing warms our hearts more than knowing they are still together in heaven. Both born in Venezuela, Rigo and Raisa grew up in Caracas where they married in 1971. Rigoberto received his engineering degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in April of 1973, while Raisa remained a homemaker after graduating from high school and dedicated her life to the upbringing of their three children, Raisa Gabriela, Raisa Carolina, and Ricardo Jose. Rigoberto relocated his family to the United States in 1990.

They moved to the Florida Keys in 2001 to be near their first-born granddaughter, Oriana.

That year, Rigo and Raisa, along with their son Ricardo, decided to purchase Upper Crust Pizza in Marathon where they enjoyed interacting with their loving customers and loyal employees. Rigo and Raisa always offered their welcoming smiles and kind hearts to anyone that came to the restaurant.

They loved sharing stories about their family, especially the accomplishments of their grandchildren. While Raisa focused on growing orchids and succulents in her beautiful yard, keeping in touch with family overseas, and making fabulous desserts for the restaurant. Rigo enjoyed perfecting his tennis skills as well as reading and learning about science, physics and mathematics. Rigo and Raisa were loved by everyone they knew. They are survived by their three children; four grandchildren, Oriana, Eduardo, Leonardo and Valentina; their dear sons-in-law, Cesar Mendez and Raul Ruiz; as well as their siblings, nieces and nephews.

Rigo and Raisa will be dearly missed, but they will always remain present in our hearts.

FURTHER TALES OF THE GRAY-TAILED TATTLER

I

t’s both a truism and a cliche that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. For instance, when I drove from Key West to Long Key State Park seven times to see the Key West quail-dove and never saw it. That was slightly insane – though I prefer to think of it as the universe conspiring against me.

Driving up to Tavernier for the second time to try and see a gray-tailed tattler, a mega-rarity that MARK had only been recorded three times in the lower 48 HEDDEN states? Even if its appearances were getting more and more sporadic? Also, I worried, how many times could I get away with writing a column about not seeing a bird?

So it was a little bleak when we pulled into Harry Harris Park and the seven or so birders already there were spread out along the shoreline, peering into the openings and mangrove coves. If the gray tattler was being seen, they would have all been clumped together, staring at it.

Here comes the fug, I thought.

I knew at least one of the people there – Gallus Quigley, a birder from Orlando with whom I’d spend some time driving around Miami, looking for exotic parrots and mynas, with the late, great Paul Bithorn.

On the last trip I’d missed the tattler by 45 minutes. The tide had been coming in and was close to high, and the bird wasn’t seen again that day, which meant it was more likely to feed at the park’s shoreline at low tide. And now it was only about an hour past low tide.

We began our due diligence, staking out the big inlet by the hard aground sailboat and the blocked off jetty, where most of the sightings had occurred, and when we got antsy, working our way through the park, keeping an eye on every bit of available shoreline.

It was pretty slow, except for the flock of about 40 ruddy turnstones that kept flying around, landing on the pier, disappearing into the rocks, climbing over the seaweed piles, dividing into smaller groups, then reforming into one big group. Mixed in with them was a lone short-billed dowitcher, which everyone kept re-spotting and instinctively kept trying to turn into the gray-tailed tattler by imagining its bill shorter, its legs yellower, its plumage plainer and grayer. The dowitcher stubbornly remained a dowitcher, though.

When our focus began to flag, Ellen, Mark and I took a side trip over to the nearby under-birded Dove Creek Hammocks, where there were a lot of butterflies, which Whiteside identified, and whose names left my brain immediately.

We went back to the park, resumed the vigil for another hour, then went off to find some lunch. We ran into Gallus in the res-

taurant, who said he’d spent as much time as he could looking for the bird, so he was heading back north after he finished his vegan cheesesteak and boiled peanuts.

We decided to make one more stop at the park before heading home ourselves. The troops had thinned a bit. The guy from Chicago had headed to the airport. The Oklahoma couple had pulled out some comfortable looking camping chairs.

I looked at the apron of sargasso weed that had floated up with the high tide and despaired.

There was a little traffic in the cove: Sandpipers, a largish willet, ruddy turnstones, short-billed dowitchers, one, then two, then four.

When the fifth dowitcher flew in, Whiteside said, “That’s it.”

“What? No, it’s not,” I said, thinking Whiteside was getting kind of excitable.

Looking at the bird, though, its bill shrank to about a third the size of a dowitcher’s, its legs turned a more intense yellow, the feathers in its wings and mantle smoothed into a continuous gray.

Cymbals clashed, trumpets sounded, and an ethereal choir began to sing.

It was, in fact, the gray-tailed tattler.

Everyone began to move carefully, shifting around to get better light or a better view. Ellen said something great, which I neglected to write down. I texted Gallus to tell him he should turn around.

Then I called him to make sure he did.

A birder named Jim pulled up and immediately saw the tattler after driving six hours from Gainesville. Then Gallus made it back.

We followed the bird for a long time, as it worked from the sargasso weed to the mud to the glass-smooth puddles that had formed near the picnic tables with the rising tide. At one point the tattler strayed too close to the willet, which stabbed at him with its bill, and I yelled something at the willet to the effect of, “Hey, cut it out, that bird is a guest.”

After a while I turned to Whiteside and said, “I can’t tell you the last time I saw a lifer. It’s got to be, like, two or three years.”

“What about the Cuba pewee on Big Pine? And the black-faced grasquit?”

“Okay. It’s been, like, 18 months,” I said.

“What about the red-legged thrush at the Botanical Garden?”

Whiteside asked.

“Fine,” I said. “It’s been a year.”

I couldn’t think of anything more recent than that, but also, no matter. Finally seeing the gray-tailed tattler just felt really, really good.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT Champions for Change is a club at MHS for students in 8th to 12th grade that hosts monthly prevention activities on the Marathon High School campus.

Most recently the club campaigned for Red Ribbon Week, which promoted drug prevention. Additionally, Champions for Change members strive to choose kindness and make a difference in their school and community. Champions for Change makes an extraordinary impact on the halls of MHS. They chalk the sidewalks with positive messages and constantly design and hang different posters to promote upcoming events and teen awareness. This year there are 36 members, run by the mother-daughter duo of Dr. Christina Belotti and Ms. Tina Belotti. The group works to support middle and high school students facing special circumstances by maintaining a clothing exchange on the MHS campus, helping students with school supplies and sporting equipment, and hosting a Christmas project to provide presents for teens within the school. The club is funded through grants and by the generosity of our local community who keeps on giving.

BRIEFLY Marathon author to host book signings, Q&A This holiday season, support local businesses and a local author. Tanya Hackney, award-winning author of “Leaving the Safe Harbor: the Risks and Rewards of Raising a Family on a Boat,” will be holding two book signings to coincide with “Small Business Saturday” on Saturday, Nov. 27.

Food for Thought, located in Gulfside Village at 5800 Overseas Hwy., will be featuring holiday items and books for sale, with the author signing from 10 a.m. to noon. Keys News and Coffee, located at 2960 Overseas Hwy., will host a Q&A with the author, and a book signing, from 1 to 3 p.m. “Leaving the Safe Harbor” is a memoir about the author and her family, who started their sailing adventure with five kids aboard their catamaran, Take Two, more than 10 years ago in Marathon.

PEDRO ZAPATA 12th grade Cross Country Pedro Zapata, a senior at Marathon High School, is an active team member on the cross country, boys’ varsity soccer, and track and field teams. Most recently, Zapata ran with 14 other MHS runners at the cross country state championships in Tallahassee.

Three seasons ago, with the encouragement of teacher and coach Joey Gonzales, Zapata joined the cross country team. He originally joined because he wanted to be in better shape for the soccer season that comes right after the cross country season.

Zapata said that after joining the team, he wasn’t a big fan of running such long distances at practice.

He said, “I didn't like running, but I wanted to keep in shape. I worked to become better and better.” He added, “I liked the sport because it wasn’t something easy.”

His hard work has evidently paid off. In his first year on the team, his personal record in the 5,000-meter race was 24 minutes. Zapata said that after that first season of being in the back of the pack, he trained all summer, and almost every day since then. He sweated his way to a personal record of 17 minutes, 20 seconds.

Zapata said that this was by far his best season yet. He placed 2nd in districts, 4th in regionals, and 34th in states.

“This year I enjoyed being with all of my friends and my coaches, especially Mr. Gonzales. He is more than a coach to me, he is a friend”, said Zapata.

Pedro is unsure of what he will do after graduating high school, but says he is excited to find out.

MHS Makes It To States …

7 Years In A Row On Nov. 12, 14 runners from Marathon Middle and High School qualified for the State Championships in Tallahassee. They ran at Apalachee Regional Park alongside 240 other qualifying runners per male and female race.

This is the seventh year in a row that the boys team has qualified and the 3rd year for the girls team.

“We exceeded our expectations,” said head coach Jim Murphy. “After losing so many runners last year we went into this season thinking we would be rebuilding, which we did, but a lot faster than we expected.”

Senior Pedro Zapata was essential to the team's success.

He ran 1 minute and 13 seconds faster than last year, earning him

fourth place at the state race, and he qualified for the all-state race this Friday, Nov. 19 in Lakeland.

onroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron officially handed over her gavel to Commissioner David Rice at the Nov. 17 county board meeting, making him the new mayor. Also: Sustainability director Rhonda Haag announced a $2.7 billion plan from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to reduce the county’s coastal storm risk vulnerability.

Per a Monroe County press release, the commissioners choose the mayor designee based on a majority vote. A mayor pro tem is also designated to fill in when the mayor is unavailable. The board chose Commissioner Craig Cates to serve as mayor pro tem.

The mayor presides over the Board of County Commissioners meetings and serves as the Monroe County representative at ceremonial occasions. The mayor is also responsible for signing and co-signing documents with the County Clerk.

The board expressed its gratitude to Coldiron for her service.

“This year as our mayor, Michelle Coldiron has gone above and beyond to a point that I’m certainly going to be an anti-climax,” said Rice. “Because she’s everywhere, all the time, over and over, whether it’s going to Tallahassee or driving to Miami for meetings. … I’ve never seen anybody work as hard as Michelle.”

“I’ve learned a lot from you, and I’m proud to serve with you,” Commissioner Eddie Martinez said to Coldiron.

The amount of new infection in the county is considered to be low. Weiner said the seven-day average for daily positive new cases is 11.

Eadie also pointed out an emerging opinion about COVID-19: It’s here to stay, and we just have to learn how to manage it.

He said, “For our residents, there’s a high degree of immunity because of our vaccinations and because of natural immunity developed from natural infections. I think the opinion is coming our way scientifically, too, that trying to get to zero COVID cases is not going to be very successful. There are countries who are really trying it, like China. It’s just very hard to do. And I doubt we’d be able to do that here. And the reason being is there’s still active spots of infection here. … It seems like COVID is going to be endemic rather than pandemic. It’ll be endemic, and it’ll be throughout the world. And we’ll learn to live with it and figure out how to do that.”

Haag presented the proposed federal plan to reduce the area’s vulnerability to coastal storms. In September, the Department of the Army authorized the Florida Keys Coastal Storm Risk Management

Project, which was subsequently submitted to Congress. The next step is for Congress to make a Recommended Plan.

If this plan is authorized and funds are appropriated, the federal government would pay for 65% of the total project cost. The county and the municipalities would be responsible for 35%, which could come from residential, local and state funds.

The proposed numbers: federal funding would be $1,802,033,000, while $970,326,000 would have to be contributed by the county, municipalities and the state. In total, the USACE project would cost $2.7 billion, if approved.

The next steps? Haag said it needs Congressional authorization for construction, then project appropriations. Possible projects include: six retaining walls along the shoreline of U.S. 1, residential home elevations, commercial property floodproofing and critical infrastructure floodproofing.

There was no formal action, but the board indicated Haag should continue to pursue the next steps in the USACE project.

OVERSEAS MEDIA GROUP, A DOMINANT FORCE FOR BRAND STRATEGY IN THE KEYS

B

y any definition, Overseas Media Group’s (OMG) first year in business has been a success. From custom web development and design to social media strategies, SEO services and brand awareness, OMG has broken the myth that locally owned digital companies cannot stack up to the corporate offerings out of bigger cities.

So how did a small, locally-owned Keys company immediately compete with the metropolitan goliaths? It began with one mission, which was to apply a “quality over quantity” approach to its clients. Today, the quality has become apparent for businesses across the Keys.

The organization was started in late 2020 with just three staff members: chief operations officer Annie Briening along with Jason Koler and Britt Myers, who both also serve as co-owners of Keys Weekly Media, which spans from Key Largo to Key West.

“I knew Jason and Britt for many years and we discussed the need for a locally owned digital company on several occasions,” said Briening. “But I was sold on the idea once I realized the emphasis would be on ‘one client at a time’ with a focus on quality and service.”

Briening added that digital companies often face two pitfalls — they can either grow too quickly and their ability to service clients suffers, or most commonly, under-qualified individuals offer general digital services to companies but lack the qualifications and expertise that is needed.

Within 12 months, OMG doubled its staff, launched 15 websites and won accolades — specifically, the 2021 Newcomer Award from the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce.

“The Marathon Chamber of Commerce hired OMG to handle the lion’s share of our digital marketing campaign for a new event, Florida Keys BrewBQ,” said chamber executive director Daniel Samess. “OMG staff also built us a website from scratch for the event. We could not be more pleased with the results. We have a well-functioning, attractive website, as well as social media pages OMG also created and managed for us.”

Briening is proud of their progress in such a short amount of time. While digital services can seemingly appear confusing on the surface, she says her job is to provide continued service and communication — and make websites, SEO, social media and other digital elements easy and efficient for her clients.

“I’m excited about our quality over quantity approach, about how we wrap our arms around our clients,” she said. “We build close relationships and have fun with it. One of my proudest accomplishments is when our client considers us a part of their team.”

Over the past year, OMG has hired new staff members Maison Benitez, social media manager/digital strategist; Marla Orlowski, website designer/developer; and Chanice Dos Santos, media manager/content creator.

Koler said the impetus behind the founding of OMG was partly created by the pandemic as more and more businesses (including Keys Weekly) delved farther into digital marketing.

“There just wasn’t a quality digital solution for clients of the Weekly,” he said. “We grew frustrated with the quality of content and service our clients were receiving and we heard them asking for solutions almost daily. We simply got tired of sending our clients to a company that wouldn’t call them back — or operated out of Chicago or Miami and never set foot in the Keys. How can you service a client, and better yet, tell their story, if you don’t live here and visit them with consistency?”

OMG clients range from restaurants and local events to Realtors and nonprofits. But for Myers and Koler, it all began with one cornerstone in mind — Briening.

“Britt and I always knew the service was needed, but the trick was to find a locally respected business person, with the digital talents to compete with anyone in the world,” said Koler. “Our success is measured by Annie and her team’s hard work and that shows in our clients’ satisfaction. The referrals we’ve received in such a short amount of time is humbling and satisfying.”

Myers echoed Koler’s evaluation, and emphasized the job is never complete, which is why the service component is so important.

Annie Briening graduated from Pennsylvania’s East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in art and design, moved to Key West in 2006 with her now-husband and hasn’t looked back. She worked in marketing for nine years at First State Bank and built a foundation of business relationships through her work with local organizations. She serves as a board member of the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

READING WITH PATRICK

By Michelle Kuo After graduating Harvard, Michelle Kuo accepted one of the most challenging positions available with Teach for America. Filled with tremendous hope, she arrived in the small town of Helena, Arkansas.

Reality immediately set in when she entered the completely dilapidated, neglected and forgotten town. The public school was filled with students left behind generations ago.

Using her love of reading, as well as patience and pure kindness, Michelle found ways to encourage the students. O

ne of Marathon’s flagship pizza restaurants has reopened its doors after a short hiatus. And although its beloved owners Rigoberto and Raisa Gonzalez will no longer greet their loyal customers, their children Ricardo, Raisa Carolina and Raisa Gabriela pledge that “nothing has changed.”

Rigoberto and Raisa were a staple of the community since 2001, when the couple elected to relocate to Marathon to be closer to their first granddaughter Oriana. Along with Ricardo, they purchased Upper Crust Pizza in 2001.

Continuing with the recipes of the previous owner, Ricardo began managing the kitchen, maintaining and tweaking existing recipes while ensuring quality in the homemade doughs. Rigoberto oversaw the operation using his years of work experience, and Raisa focused on the guest experience in the front of house area.

“My dad was a quality control engineer for pretty much all of his life, so to him, quality ingredients and the quality of the product that we serve was extremely important,” said Raisa Carolina, adding that the restaurant’s presentation was given an equal amount of care. “Cleanliness was special for him and my mom.”

“Just little things, like not letting the

light bulbs burn out outside,” added Ricardo. “They seem to be very trivial things, but it’s very important.”

When Rigoberto and Raisa passed away a mere four minutes apart after battles with COVID-19 in August 2021, Ricardo and Raisa Carolina understandably took some time away from the business. “They left a big gap, and we’re pretty heartbroken,” said Raisa Carolina.

“But my dad would have said, ‘You have to keep going,’ and my mom would have said, ‘You have it in you, and you’re gonna do it right.’”

The pair are carrying their parents’ traditions forward as Upper Crust reopens, keeping the recipes and menu offerings the same while looking to fill the gaps left by Rigoberto and Raisa’s passing. “My mom was the main person who did all the desserts in the restaurant, so it’s going to be hard to fill the gap, but we’re trying,” said Ricardo. “We have the recipes.”

Both have tried their hand at some of the restaurant’s most popular or proprietary treats, including banana torte and coconut cheesecake. And while the pair have some ideas for new menu additions in the future, for now they’re sticking to what they know. “Just simple things, because our menu is a menu that works,” said Ricardo. “I’m still here in the kitchen as a watchdog. Nothing has changed.”

“It’s exactly the same quality,” added

Raisa Carolina. “Those looking to have a homemade meal, that’s what they’re going to get here.”

According to the Gonzalez siblings, the support they’ve received from their staff and other Marathon locals in a time of hardship has been unparalleled. “We’ve had an outrageous amount of people come and give us bear hugs and praise how wonderful the food is,” said Raisa Carolina.

They are also quick to credit their staff. “We have the same local employees that we had before, along with a few new additions,” said Raisa Carolina. “The old crew stayed with us through thick and thin during the closure, and we’re very grateful for them,” added Ricardo.

And while Upper Crust is now back in full swing, Ricardo and Raisa have made a clear pledge to continue the principles and standards set so clearly by their parents.

“That’s basically why we decided to reopen,” said Ricardo. “To keep the memory going.”

‘DOLPHIN TALE’ STAR CETACEAN PASSES AWAY On Thursday, Nov. 11, Clearwater Marine Aquarium announced that Winter the dolphin passed away. Upon further examination and necropsy, what was originally classified as a gastrointestinal abnormality was found to be an inoperable intestinal torsion. After becoming entangled in a crab trap when she was mere months old, Winter lost her tail and was rescued and rehabilitated at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

She later starred in the 2011 movie ‘Dolphin Tale,’ which chronicled her rescue journey and efforts to build a groundbreaking prosthetic tail. Winter soon became a worldwide symbol of hope and connection for amputees and others with physical and mental disabilities.

In a statement, Clearwater said, “The CMA team expresses our deepest gratitude to the thousands of people from around the world who sent caring messages for Winter.

She truly inspired hope and was loved by millions of people worldwide.” The aquarium closed for a day to allow staff to grieve, but reopened the next day and soon outlined a week of memorial plans dedicated to Winter. For more information, visit cmaquarium.org — Contributed

ou might have heard that Sarah and I did a thing a couple of weekends ago. It’s true — we’re now newlyweds, and we helped raise a lot of donations to Presents In Paradise and the Rotary Club of Marathon’s scholarship fund.

And we couldn’t have done it without a whole lot of help.

First of all, we have to thank Matt Sexton, Karen Thurman, Corinne Dean and the entire staff at Grassy Flats and Bongos. Not only did they provide the perfect island wedding location, they took super good care of us and created amazing dishes for our little after-party. It’s fun to see Karen playing Wendy to all the Lost Boys of Grassy Flats!

Sarah would especially like to thank her Bridal Posse: Sara Matthis (also our wonderful officiant who wrote a beautiful ceremony), Brandi Card, Patty Childress, Elynn Eiss, Mary Ann Royse, Kathi Venier, and Karen Thurman. They helped her have a blast and remain sane at the same time.

And President Duane Webster and the Rotary Club of Marathon provided insurance and volunteers, and Presents In Paradise board members Kristina Helms, Erika Goodman, Tami Wires, and Natalie and Bill Danko offered valuable help.

Cassandra Kwiatt brought her soon-tobe-famous multi-tier charcuterie board full of yummy delights. Specialty dishes were donated by Tony at Driftwood Pizza, Ali and Andy at Key Colony Inn, Leigh Ann from Clouds in my Coffee, John and Jeb at Sunset Grille, Elise at Brutus Seafood — and special thanks to Simone at Dockside for saving our butts more than a few times!

Those with a sweet tooth were in luck — thanks to Key lime pies from Joe at Cracked Conch, and Kate from Sweet Savannah’s who baked cake and our beautiful wedding cake.

Huge thanks to Pete and Shirley from Herbie’s who supplied the beer, and Lavarski from Coca-Cola for the water and sodas. Katy Kennedy and Cornelia Hoover ran the bar flawlessly, with ice from Keys Fisheries.

Huge thanks go out to Ashley Keeney for herding the cats and coordinating our big reception party at the park. We couldn’t have done this without her — seriously.

THE GREAT LIONFISH WEDDING OF 2021

wo very spicy personalities came together 10 years ago, and this was the culmination of that.”

That’s how Brent Robinson, a heavy equipment mechanic business owner, described his recent “one-of-a-kind, coolest-day-ever” wedding.

On Nov. 6, he married Yvette Moreno on a private island on Little Conch Key in the Middle Keys. The theme: lionfish.

The Ocala pair met in an adult soccer league nearly a decade ago, and have been working hard, playing harder together ever since. When discussing their wedding, the “quirky couple” wanted something different.

“We saw a video by REEF years ago about lionfish being an invasive species you can actually eat,” Moreno said. “My children are half-Peruvian and half-Panamanian. I’m originally from Panama. Our cultures eat a lot of ceviche, and we love it. Then, one of us joked that the entrance ticket for all our guests would be to spear their own lionfish and bring it to the wedding so we could make ceviche.”

Ultimately, the family relaxed their requirements but themed the entire event around lionfish, to bring awareness to the problems caused by this invasive species and to promote conservation through eating it.

The biggest challenge was finding enough commercial-grade lionfish to serve to guests. Salatino Seafood, a specialty lionfish provider, ultimately provided 20 pounds to the couple.

Co-founders Aarav Chavda and Roland Salatino explained, “Every lionfish we eat ... protects 500 square meters of reef floor.” This is because lionfish have no natural predators in the Florida Keys and are voracious eaters. They also reproduce prolifically, and can live for decades.

Therefore, eating lionfish is “one of the most environmentally-friendly dining options on the planet,” the co-founders said. “It’s better than just ‘sustainable,’ it’s actively environmentally-regenerative. With each plate served, you save 50,000 native reef fish and piece our oceans back together. What else can say something like that?”

Thus, the great lionfish wedding of 2021 was born, and it became a Keys-wide affair for Robinson,

Moreno and their guests. Working with local wedding planner Lyndsey Mae of LMae Events, the pair planned the perfect wedding getaway in paradise.

First, they booked a private island on Little Conch Key with cottages, hot tubs and an island view for their ceremony.

“The whole Key West, fresh fish, scuba diving vibe just took over,” Moreno said. “Plus, we needed a place where our people could keep the party going. The private island was perfect and reasonable.”

The couple had their island for a week and came down early to enjoy Moreno’s bachelorette party in Key West. They hosted their welcome party on the island “in-and-out of the hot tub” and catered

by Marathon’s Irie Island Eats. Friday, they went up to Islamorada Fish Company for their rehearsal dinner. The main event was sweetened by 215 cupcakes in 10 different flavors from Marathon’s Sweet Savannah’s Bakery.

“The Keys have a party side down in Key West, which I like, and a laid-back vibe in the Upper and Middle Keys, which is more Brent’s style,” Moreno said. “Everyone can get their needs met somewhere in the Keys. It was perfect for us.”

As for lionfish, Key Largo Fisheries prepared the coveted ceviche using Salatino’s lionfish fillets, and the couple also served lionfish crab cakes.

“I can tell you, lionfish fillets are phenomenal.

Probably better than any fish I’ve had in my life,” Robinson said.

Moreno added, “The ceviche was phenomenal.

Zesty, limey, and with onions. It passed the Panamanian test.”

Additionally, the groom wore purple lionfish cufflinks, the bride made cups emblazoned with the fish of the hour as gifts and the decor even included live lionfish on display in a tank. As a finishing touch, they even used venomous lionfish spines as part of their food decor.

“Lionfish contain all their venom in their spines.

But, we learned that if you bake lionfish spines at 400 degrees, it kills the venom. Then, you can use the spines like toothpicks,” Moreno said. “I just had this vision of lionfish crab cakes with spines as toothpicks. (Islamorada local) “Zombie” overnighted 60 spines to us, and everything was complete.”

The affair went on without a hitch, filled with family, love and happy tears. The couple loved “geeking out” on lionfish facts with their friends and family, and Mae often overheard groups chatting around the lionfish tank about why it’s so important to eat the species.

After it was all done, “Zombie” filleted the fish from the tank, and the newlyweds took their catch up to Lazy Days in Islamorada for a “honeymoon” dinner before heading back.

“You can’t throw them back, so we got to eat our lionfish too, which was the point of the whole thing,” Moreno said. “It was all just perfect.”

“I’d like to challenge the next mindful conservationists that decide to have a lionfish wedding to do it bigger, better, and more outlandish than we did,” Robinson said. “And, make sure to invite me.”
