Specifically, non-U.S. citizens traveling from 33 countries, including China, India and a majority of Europe, were barred from coming to the states. Intercontinental flights began making their way to the U.S. on Nov. 8 with the restriction lifted. “Today America is open for business,” said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

ollowing the swearing-in of councilmen Trevor Wofsey and Luis Gonzalez, discussion of a building inspection ordinance, as well as a push from city attorney Steve Williams to revise Marathon’s sign ordinance, took precedence at the Nov. 9 meeting of the Marathon City Council.

Continuing his sentiments from the previous meeting, councilman Dr. Dan Zieg urged the council to restrict its newly-enacted building inspection ordinances to affect only older multistory commercial buildings. Zieg’s remarks were met by questions from Gonzalez regarding Marathon’s alignment with the state’s plans for legislation in the wake of the Surfside condo collapse.

“I wish I had heard more,” said city attorney Steven Williams. “I don’t know why they’re silent on it, but I would rather have something in the books that we have been proactive in trying to address the issue than waiting to see what Tallahassee does when they could, in theory, do nothing.”

With dissent among council members regarding the necessity of certifying single-story buildings, the discussion turned to whether vacation rentals fell under a commercial or residential classification and were subject to the new ordinance.

“Residential single-family units have never been part of the ordinance,” said building official Noe Martinez. “With vacation rentals, if you ask planning, it’s one thing. If you ask building, it’s another.” Martinez also indicated that he was still interested in inspecting “three or four” of the largest commercial single-story buildings in town. “A lot of people visit them. I’ve been in a couple of them, and that electrical room is not acceptable.”

Williams urged action on the part of the council, adding that the subject of single-story buildings could always be revisited in the future once the recertification of multi-story buildings was further along. The council unanimously voted to alter the ordinance to include only multi-story buildings for the time being.

Williams also strongly advised the council to alter Marathon’s sign ordinance, a code he described as “patently unconstitutional since 2015.” “We probably have more signs than anyone ever intended to have on one parcel of land,” said Williams, displaying images of “sign pollution” at intersections and businesses around Marathon.

Pointing to the 2015 Supreme Court case Reed vs. Town of Gilbert, in which a small Arizona town’s sign code was deemed unconstitutional due to its content-based restrictions on church signs that infringed upon freedom of speech rights, Williams informed the council that Marathon’s sign code currently contains 16 unconstitutional content-based restrictions and will “end up at the Supreme Court in no time flat if we do it wrong.” He offered a simplification of the case, stating that, “If you have to read a sign to determine whether it’s legal or not, your sign code is unconstitutional.”

Williams simultaneously offered an array of solutions, suggesting the city could simply copy Monroe County’s sign code, passed two years ago. “I don’t think I’m spilling any secrets. I was the attorney who handled it then,” said Williams. “The good news is, I was allowed to walk out of the building with their sign code.”

The council unanimously chose to move forward with adapting Monroe County’s sign code for Marathon’s use. “It seems silly to recreate the wheel. It also seems silly to create a problem throughout the county,” said councilman Steve Cook. “I’m not always about homogenizing and being like the county, but there are some things that make sense. Ours is unconstitutional.”

“A municipality on the west coast of Florida just learned that to the tune of six zeros in penalties,” said Williams.

“And you just told everybody about it,” said Cook, drawing laughter from the crowd. “So let’s change it now.”

In other news: - Congratulations to new Marathon Mayor (and newly married man) John Bartus.

- A question of changing the city’s charter to alter term lengths and limits for City Council members was raised by Zieg. Pointing to the 2021 election that saw less than 30% voter turnout with a $35,000 known expense to the city, Zieg suggested that returning to single four-year terms would allow the city to re-synchronize with state and national elections, the last of which saw a turnout north of 60%. “I’d like to see more people voice their wishes by voting, and I think this is something we should really consider,” said Zieg. Bartus and Gonzalez voiced their support, but indicated they would still like to allow council members to serve two consecutive terms. After short discussion, the council elected to move forward with exploring the necessary change to the city’s charter.

- The council unanimously voted to pursue expansion of the baseball diamonds at Marathon Community Park, allowing for competitive play among more age groups.

- Gonzalez announced that Round 2 of Landry Sayer Clean Up Day is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 12 at 8 a.m., beginning at Coco Plum Beach. MCSO and the Marathon Fire Department have both pledged their support to Sayer’s repeated cleanup efforts.

- Though the pair were not born in the Keys, Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron honored Hammer and Susan Runyon as Honorary Conchs. “As everyone in this audience knows, they have done so many tremendous things for the City of Marathon and the County of Monroe,” said Coldiron - At its second public hearing, the council unanimously voted to enact ordinance 2021-24, shortening the cumulative damage clock for rebuilding requirements following significant damage to a structure.

WOLTANSKI TO SEEK RE-ELECTION TO SCHOOL BOARD ‘I’M NOT DONE SERVING THE CHILDREN OF MONROE’ CHARLOTTE TWINE

ue Woltanski has an all-consuming passion. And it occupies her from when she wakes up in the morning till she goes to sleep at night: public education. “​​I think people up here know that my passion is making public education the best it can be for our kids,” she told Keys Weekly. “That is what I’m focused on almost every waking minute.”

And that is why she’s running for her second term for District 5 of Monroe County’s school board against newcomer Alexandria Suarez. Woltanski said she simply isn’t finished with having her voice be heard.

Per keyssschools.com, District 5 starts from the easternmost boundary of District 4 — MM 93 — east to the Dade County line, including all of mainland Monroe County.

Woltanski was elected, unopposed, as District 5’s representative in 2018. She is a retired pediatrician and a mother of two Monroe County students, one of whom, Ali, graduated from Coral Shores High School and is attending Georgetown University with a major in foreign service.

Woltanski was raised in the San Francisco Bay area, where her father was a local school administrator. She attended U.C. Santa Barbara as an undergraduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology, and U.C. Davis for a master’s degree in exercise physiology), before moving to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where she ultimately specialized in general pediatrics.

She and her husband, Tom, an ER physician, have been homeowners in Tavernier since 1999. They moved permanently to the Keys in 2008 so their children could grow up next door to their grandmother.

“I’m not done serving the children of Monroe,” she said. “My son (Zack, in 10th grade) is still in school. Projects we’ve started, like with mental health, I’d like to see fulfilled. For example, the superintendent would like more social workers with a mental health focus.

ciated with the accountability system.

The amount of testing in the schools is the reason I got into following education policy. This is an opportunity for the district to move to a more studentfocused and less test-focused system of education.”

Her background as a pediatrician led to her advocacy for COVID mitigation strategies, including the use of masks, in the school system during the pandemic. Her stance at times was at odds with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order that only parents should decide whether a child wears a mask to school.

“I’m guided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and pediatricians support public health measures,” she said. “The biggest advances in children’s health have been through public health measures like car seats, seatbelts and vitamin D in milk. Pediatricians know the value of doing what’s best for all children. I think we’re moving out of (the pandemic). I doubt we’ve seen the last wave, but I’m hopeful no wave will be as bad as the one Delta was.”

Woltanski pointed out that during this time, she has seen other school districts as a target of anger and vitriol from within their own communities.

“When I speak to people here, I don’t get that feeling,” she said. “I think we want what’s best for our kids, as seen by the donations to scholarships, fundraisers and renewing tax referendums for the schools. The kids are being well-served by a community that values education. I’m privileged to be a part of that.”

DRESS CODE UNDER SCRUTINY

eventeen-year-old Daniela Briones-Moreno, a Key West High School senior with plans to go to college, stood up and spoke about the district’s dress code at the Oct. 26 school board meeting after years of frustration.

“I realize our schools’ intention with the dress code is to get us ready for our professional lives, and I completely understand that,” she said. “But you are also enforcing the dress code with the rationale that males are distracted by what we wear, which isn’t right.

You are teaching us that males will never respect women unless we dress properly and that the way you dress determines how you get respected.”

Ironically, after the meeting, Briones-Moreno realized that the shirt she was wearing, a black top that was off the shoulder, would not have met Key West High School standards. She may have been “dress-coded,” the students’ lingo for when they are told to either go home and change or cover up.

“The off-the-shoulder top was just a coincidence,” she told Keys Weekly. “I gave a speech and was dressed professionally.”

Per Keysschools.com, Monroe County School District has a general dress code, but each school can make more specific requirements.

Key West High School’s dress code policy says: “Tops must have sleeves that cover the shoulder. No sleeveless, straps or bare midriff tops are permitted. Shirts and tops must extend over the waist; no skin may be exposed at the belly/ waist line; shirts may not be seethrough.”

The reason for the modesty?

Teachers have told Briones-Moreno that “shoulders are distracting.”

But the student pointed out that how a young woman is dressed is sometimes inconsequential. She was once harassed in middle school by a group of boys when she was wearing “a giant Tshirt and jeans.”

Briones-Moreno is also frustrated that the way the dress code is enforced is inconsistent among body types. She describes herself

as having a “curvier build.” She remembers an incident where she was stopped at the school’s front gates and “dress-coded.” She was asked to put on a sweater because she was slightly revealing her midriff. But a friend “with a slimmer build” who was standing next to her was wearing “almost a sports bra” and was not dress-coded.

A Middle Keys mother who wishes to remain anonymous told Keys Weekly that she is a high school parent who thinks the dress code “does put an unfair burden on the girls. It makes the boys’ comfort and education more important than the girls’ experience. And I think it is difficult for them to fairly enforce it. It tends to be a certain body type that gets singled out.”

Briones-Moreno said she’s getting support from teachers. She feels that a solution would be for respect to be taught in the curriculum starting from kindergarten — not just to boys but also to girls.

She has seen girls shame each other for what they are wearing.

Her plan is to come back to the board and speak again — accompanied by friends — if she does not see any changes made.

“As a former principal, the dress code has guidelines for uniformity for all students,” said Amber Archer Acevedo in response to Briones-Moreno’s speech.

Archer Acevedo, the coordinator of community relations and a former Key West High School principal, said Briones-Moreno’s statements “are her opinion, not necessarily the reason for the dress code.”

YOUTH CAN EXPERIENCE JOYS OF FLIGHT ON AVIATION DAY Free plane rides will be made available to children ages 8 to 17 at Marathon International Airport on Saturday, Nov. 13 — otherwise known as Marathon Aviation Day — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as part of the Young Eagles Aviation Program. Participants should go to the EAA Museum hangar at the airport to register, have a guardian sign a permission form and be assigned to an airplane and pilot. The Young Eagles’ goal is to share the joys of flight with local youth. A MATCH MADE IN PARADISE The wedding ceremony of John Bartus and Sarah Brawer was held on the morning of Nov. 6, at Marathon’s Grassy Flats Resort & Beach Club. “The weather was beautiful, and the sky was clear and breezy,” said former Keys Weekly editor Sara Matthis, who officiated the ceremony. About 200 guests attended the morning event, and the couple held a larger reception open to the public at Marathon Community Park with food, drink and a music concert. Bartus is a musician and a Marathon council member who recently was named to his fourth term as mayor. Brawer is a therapist and co-founder of Presents in Paradise, which raises money to give children gifts during the holidays. have a warning: prepare for all the jokes.”

That’s Stanley Switlik fifth grader Emmitt Johnson’s messages to audiences who plan to attend “Goodnight Princess, Sleepless in Fairytale Lane,” the school’s first theatrical production since 2019.

Featuring a cast of 24 fifth graders, along with six stage hands, the show, as one might guess, centers around a princess (Ariella Dworniczak) who just simply can’t seem to get to sleep.

Audience members are treated to the best efforts of her chamberlain (played

by Daelani Holmes) and other fairytale creatures trying their best to provide tips for her insomnia.

In a departure from tradition, director Michele Licause elected to give her fifth grade students their own time to shine, as opposed to including third and fourth graders in the production.

“We decided to just work with the fifth grade class because they got the short end of the stick,” said Licause.

“They were cut out of ‘Willy Wonka’ when it was canceled two years ago because of COVID.” Due to the pan-

demic, this will be the first and only opportunity for the entire cast to appear on the Switlik stage.

Licause heavily credited both the efforts of the students and other teachers involved in the production.

“They’re a great group to work with; they’re very hard working, really motivated, and excited to be on stage.

And all of us have worn a lot of hats.

Producing, painting, it takes a village.”

By their own estimation, the cast is just about ready to go, and described their experience with their directors as “awesome,” “amazing” and “the best.”

They also show a keen awareness of their stage hands’ efforts behind the scenes, including stage manager Levi Davis. “(Levi) controls everything,” said Johnson. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to give a good performance.”

Davis himself seems to enjoy working behind the scenes. “The best part is I don’t get seen,” he said. “And if somebody annoys me, I can just mute their mic.”

4 Get ready for British accents and a whole lot of cucumber sandwiches.

Both items are on the menu in “The Importance of Being Earnest,” the Marathon High School Drama Club’s fall production.

A satire on Victorian society set in 1895, the show follows the exploits of bachelors John “Jack” Worthing (Charles Vaughn) and Algernon “Algy” Moncrieff (Joseph Cabrera) as they each create alter egos named Ernest to escape tiresome social obligations. Their web of comical deception becomes tangled when they attempt to woo Gwendolen Fairfax (Calla Jimenez) and Cecily Cardew (Eleanor Dunn) under the watchful eye of Lady Bracknell (Rylee Seligson). The men realize they may have bitten off more than they can chew when each discovers that his lover is resolved to only love a man named Ernest.

“The show is really funny,” said director Carrollyn Cox. “I’d heard of it, but I’d never seen it until my daughter recommended it to me after seeing the talent we had.”

As an older show set across the Atlantic Ocean, the cast said that the language, humor and accents provided the biggest challenges. “It took us a long time to get into it and get used to it, but you definitely slip into it,” said Vaughn. “It’s very British humor, but it’s very relevant,” added Leo Volchek, who plays Rev. Canon Chasuble.

On stage, it’s a similar story. “I have two veteran seniors who can do it by themselves. They don’t require a lot of direction,” said Cox. “But I’ve got three 9th graders who are going to step right up and fill those shoes.” She also noted that Volchek and Raymond Bell will take the stage in “Earnest” for the first time as seniors after years of backstage involvement.

After weekend “lock ins” that saw the cast rehearse the show multiple times in its entirety back to back, the cast and crew are just about ready for the curtain to rise. “It wasn’t a show that we were all jumping for joy to do at first,” said Seligson. “But the best part was seeing how everyone came to love it and worked together to show everyone what we can do.”

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is on stage for one weekend only, with performances on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., along with a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. Students have the option of joining sports teams, community service clubs, math leagues and social or political organizations. Z CLUB Many people are aware of the Zonta club of Marathon and its long history of community service. The club is dedicated to the advancement of women through education, economic stability, legal and legislative equality, health and wellness. What many may not know is that there is a junior membership of the same club at Marathon High School. This club, called Z Club, embraces the very same pillars as the adult Zontians.

Members participate in a wide variety of events, offering services and opportunities for women and children throughout the community. The club’s charitable events include a food drive, partnering with other organizations to aid needy families, local car washes, and a holiday toy drive.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for girls to serve the community and fellowship building relationships that are encouraging, '' said club leader Carolyn McKechnie.

DEBATE TEAM In 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative in conjunction with the Marcus Foundation. This initiative was put into place to increase student participation in the areas of speech, debate and civics, particularly those relating to the State of Florida.

This year, Marathon High School has added its own debate team.

The debate team competes in speech and debate at Lincoln-Douglas debate competitions that happen across Florida and nationally.

Students on the team compose argumentative briefs affirming or negating a nationally selected topic that is normally a current and relevant issue happening in the world. Lincoln-Douglas debate focuses on the legal, ethical, and moral arguments of a given topic.

FELIS One of Marathon High School’s newer club offerings is FELIS, a cultural club which embraces and celebrates the Spanish language. The club’s mission is to encourage students to appreciate the Spanish language and the many cultural nuances associated with Spanish-speaking countries. Students from many different places share their foods, traditions and customs with one another.

In addition to the cultural appreciation aspect of the club, another of its main functions is to offer tutoring for students who are struggling to speak and practice both Spanish and English.

“I love getting to help students learn, practice, and improve their language skills,'' said club president Yasmary Santos.

Julio Borras, the club’s sponsor, said, “It is important to help others realize the importance of being bilingual and how its benefits can help the community.”

ost of us, depending upon how organized we are (ahem), have a certain morning routine before work. A shower, a brushing of the teeth, perhaps coffee and breakfast (or not), then a jump into a car for the commute. Some of us accomplish this at a frenzied pace (cough), while others are more leisurely. Meditative.

Passionate birder Michelle Perez, founder of the Facebook page Florida Keys Birding, Reptiles, Wildlife, and Plants, can possibly be counted among the latter, calmer group. After all, she takes time to walk around her yard to watch birds every morning before going to her job as a nurse for a managed care company. Then she types up a post with her findings, like so: “Morning Birdcast November 8th … Many migrating birds seen this morning, still lots of Turkey vultures, swainsons, and short tailed hawks soaring in this windy day.”

Since starting the page three years ago, Perez has over 600 followers and counting, many posting excited comments about a bird seen that day. For many, birdwatching is an obsession.

Perez sees her hobby as a way to start her day in a positive way and indulge her interest in all things nature.

“I like it because you're getting outdoors, you’re walking, observing, learning, and it is relaxing for me,” she explained.

And it all started with a Christmas present when she still lived in Kissimmee.

“I would go on walks and bike rides and look at birds, but I didn’t know much about different kinds. In 2014, I asked my husband to get me a feeder for Christmas. I wanted to see birds in my yard. The first one was a cardinal. Then I started getting weird stuff. One was a male

painted bunting. I thought it was an escaped pet or a parrot, because it was so colorful.

So I started Googling, and I figured out what it was.”

When Perez moved to Key Largo in Michelle Perez, creator of 2018, she landscaped her yard to attract the Facebook page Florida more birds. Mark Hedden is Keys Weekly’s wildlife columnist and executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society. He corroborated Perez’s assertion about the enormous variety of birds in the Keys during migration.

“The Keys are a great place to bird for a number of reasons,” he said.

“One is that, twice a year, we have massive numbers of birds migrate through here. And there is so little land that it makes birds easier to find.

Also, because we are at the north end of the Caribbean, we regularly see a number of species that you don't see in the rest of the country.”

Perez hopes that more people will join her group and add their bird sightings, and she said that people can start bird watching just like she did: with a feeder and access to Google to ID the birds.

Hedden added, “The great thing about birding is all you really need is a pair of binoculars and a field guide. Printed field guides are great, but you can also get them as apps on your phone.”

And whether you get up early in the morning to go birding before work or not is entirely up to you.

peration Christmas Child Christmas Child Shoebox season has arrived. Anyone can help a child in need by packing a simple shoe box with school supplies, hygiene items and wonderful toys.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, has collected and delivered more than 188 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

This year there are four drop-off locations in the area where individuals, families and community groups can bring their packed shoeboxes during National Collection Week: Nov. 15 through Nov. 22.

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), in partnership with Wildlife Forever, will host the Florida State Fish Art Contest again this year. Students in kindergarten through high school can compete in this free contest for a chance to win state and national honors and prizes. This program inspires creativity while developing the next generation of anglers and conservationists.

Florida winners will be selected by the FWC in four grade categories: kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade; and 10th through 12th grade. State winners will advance to a national competition to be judged for top prizes including Best of Show. The deadline to enter is March 31, 2022.

“We are committed to increasing youth participation in freshwater and saltwater fishing through this effort,” said Eric Sutton, executive director of the FWC. “The State Fish Art program is a unique and creative way to connect to youth anglers and the FWC is proud to be sponsoring the initiative for Florida.”

T

he popular Square Grouper restaurant on Cudjoe Key has a fitting new neighbor.

Cudjoe Key residents Mike and Suzie Lombard will celebrate the opening of their new Underwater Photography Gallery on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 22627 LaFitte Drive, Cudjoe Key, next to Square Grouper.

While the restaurant takes its name from the tongue-in-cheek nickname given in the ’70s to bales of marijuana that often floated off the Florida Keys, the Lombards’ gallery focuses on the actual marine life that swims beneath the surface, including, you guessed it, grouper.

The couple has been diving all over the world for more than 40 years, and has turned their photos into a stunning gallery of underwater images.

From the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, as well as the Red Sea, the Lombards have captured every marine organism imaginable, from tiny anemone shrimp to the impressive hammerhead and great white sharks, and everything in between.

Walking into the new gallery, one nearly expects to be breathing through a regulator and hearing the crisp in and out of each regulated breath.

Online sales are also available through the website in countless sizes.

“Our prints are ChromaLuxe Aluminum metal prints creating unusually stunning pieces with rich vibrant colors used in high-end art galleries and the fine art industry,” Mike Lombard said. “Metal prints are more scratch resistant than anything else in the market. They will not rust and can be placed in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor spaces.”

There are dolphins, turtles, manatees, saltwater crocodiles, elkhorn coral, purple sea fans and more.

“Our underwater photography focuses on ocean life in the natural habitat,” they said. “The Atlantic Gallery includes images from our local favorites — Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico and Guadalupe Island.

The Pacific Gallery includes images from awesome worldwide locations such as Indo-Pacific, Thailand, Red Sea and Hawaii. The species galleries show images by animal species.

“Underwater (photography) is our passion. We hope to express and educate others to appreciate and take care of the extremely delicate ocean environment. Help us protect and cherish the fragile underwater world.”

The gallery is open from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Sally Whalton

was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a child of the Great Depression and an eternal optimist; a housewife and an artist; a cook and a business-woman; most of all, she was a friend to everyone she met. Sally had a wonderful way with children of all ages, always finding time to play games and make them feel special. Although she didn’t attend college she was incredibly bright, articulate, and had a marvelous grasp of the English language, as anyone who ever played Scrabble with her can attest.

Sally faithfully kept diaries and chronicled her life and the lives of her children for many decades.

She didn’t drink or smoke, and only rarely cussed, yet had as much fun as anyone. When her husband Joe, who was a dreamer of the most challenging kind, decided to move, buy a car, or start a business, it was Sally who figured out how to pay for things, put food on the table, and keep the kids in clothes and shoes. When Joe was moody, Sally never let it break her down. When their parents got sick, both Sally and Joe stepped up to help. When their daughter Susie died, Sally held the family together. When Joe struggled with Alzheimer’s and dementia, Sally cheerfully cared for him.

Sally was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 10, 1922, the middle of three sisters. Her father Emmett DeVere Vining designed and built luxury homes in Grosse Pointe, Michigan until the Great Depression when he decided if they were going to be hungry, they at least wanted to be warm, so they moved to South Florida, where the three Vining girls, Betty, Sally, and Dotty attended Miami Beach High. It was in Sally’s sophomore year that she met Joseph Charles Whalton IV, a Key West Conch, and thus began a romance that lasted more than seven decades. When Sally graduated from high school in 1939, the Vinings moved back to Michigan, and it wasn’t too much later that Joe and a friend hitchhiked from a military academy in Georgia to Detroit, where he resumed his romantic pursuit of Sally. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army, and before heading off to basic training, Joe and Sally tied the knot on June 12, 1942. During the war, Sally and her mom Mildred Harger Vining both worked at the Briggs Factory in Detroit which manufactured airplane parts. Joe was stationed in Panama, and on one occasion Sally took a bus from Detroit to Mexico City to meet him when he was on leave. They apparently hadn’t budgeted wisely, and Sally only had enough money for a return bus ticket as far as New Orleans, so when she arrived there she found a job as a seamstress in a dress factory and worked for two weeks to save enough money to get back to Detroit. After the war, Sally and Joe moved to Miami where they raised poodles and began a family. Joe did most of the dog training and Sally raised the children. Susie was first, then Joe V, followed by John, and Mike. During this nine-year span, the family moved to Dania where Joe and Sally, with the help of Sally’s mom and dad, built Whalton’s Dog Kennel which they operated for several years.

Upon selling the kennel in the mid-1950’s, the Whaltons took their $18,000 in profits, bought a vacant lot on Grassy Key, and built a house facing the Gulf of Mexico. Actually, they only built half the house since the funds ran out much sooner

than they’d expected. In order to make ends meet, Joe took a job at a kennel in Ocala and moved the family north (long before most Conchs made the trek from Key West). After one winter in Ocala, they'd had enough and headed back to Grassy Key where they purchased a small house/diner/tackle shop on the Atlantic side in a section of the island known as Rainbow Bend.

Fond memories were made there until September 10, 1960 when Hurricane Donna stormed ashore with a direct hit on Grassy Key. Fortunately, the Whaltons were safe with family in Miami during the hurricane, but their home and business on Rainbow Bend were gone.

Undaunted, the Whaltons moved to Marathon Shores, Joe opened the first Whalton’s Pet Shop in Marathon, and Sally worked with him while the kids were in school. In the early 1960’s there simply wasn’t enough business in the middle keys to support a family of six with the income from a small pet shop, so the family moved to Key West where they opened a larger Whalton’s Pet Shop, and lived in the old military housing on Eagle Avenue. The boys attended Catholic school and Susie graduated from Key West High.

In 1966, Sally, Joe, John, and Mike moved to Miami Beach to help with the care of Joe’s mom, Effie. They opened a dog grooming business on Miami Beach and lived there for three years until the ocean called them back to Marathon, where they again opened a pet shop. During the 1970’s, the nest emptied, and Joe and Sally bought a house on a canal in Little Venice where they lived quite happily for more than a decade. Sally and her sister Dotty began a long adventure in genealogy and traced both sides of the family back many generations.

In the early 1980’s they sold the pet shop and the house on the canal, and retired to Big Pine Key. When wanderlust hit Joe again, they moved to a 5-acre farmette in Live Oak, and Sally stoically suffered through several winters before finally convincing Joe to move back to Big Pine in 1992. There, Sally and Joe settled back into happy retirement and grand-parenting Joseph VI, Adina, and Alex.

Sadness struck in 1993 when Susie died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 47, but Sally and

Joe carried on and comforted their family and many of Susie's dearest friends by sharing love and memories. The Whaltons often provided modest, yet comfortable accommodations to many “cousins” who loved visiting the Keys.

Through the mid-1990’s and into the early 2000’s, Sally worked for the new owners of Whalton’s Pet Shop in Big Pine Key, and Joe raised canaries and helped his boys with all kinds of projects.

In 2005, Hurricane Wilma devastated the Keys and flooded the Whalton’s home in Big Pine.

Undeterred, Sally rolled up her sleeves and started cleaning the mud out of the rooms. Joe, the boys, and their wives replaced floors and walls, then put the house back together. But the boys could tell that their dad was slowing down and becoming more forgetful. By 2008, Joe was suffering from Alzheimer’s and Sally was his full-time caregiver.

Even when Joe would wander off into the mangroves around Big Pine, Sally never complained, but cheerfully called on neighbors and friends to find him and bring him home.

When Joe passed away in late October of 2010, Sally and the family threw a big party in his honor.

In traditional Conch style, a marching band escorted more than 100 friends and family members from Joe’s birthplace on Margaret Street to the family plot in the Key West Cemetery where his ashes were buried next to Susie’s. Five Brothers Grocery catered a wonderful lunch of bollos, conch fritters, and Cuban mixes, the band played on, and Sally was the perfect hostess to all the guests.

Big Pine Key continued to be Sally’s home, and although she missed Joe terribly, she also enjoyed the freedom of living on her own for the first time in her life. At least she enjoyed that freedom until a stray cat tripped her, and she ended up with a broken wrist. As usual, what might seem like bad luck became a golden opportunity, as needing help with basic tasks led Sally to Semoy Thomas.

For nearly a decade, Semoy not only helped Sally, but she also became a dear friend and true member of the family. Things were settling into a fine rhythm until Hurricane Irma hit the Keys in 2017 and Sally, who was staying with Joe and Gaye in their home near Tampa, learned that her house had been flooded with 42 inches of water.

Sally’s response was typical: “You boys will have so much less to worry about when I’m gone, since everything below the waterline is destroyed!”

Joe V, John, and Joe VI, with the help of many of their friends, gutted the house and started to fix it up when Sally decided it was time to sell.

Fortunately, John and Kitty had the perfect place for her in Marathon. Semoy drove up from Big Pine Key every day to help around the house, take Sally to visit friends, do the shopping, and play a game or two of Scrabble. John and Kitty were always there, cooking meals, working on the computer, or just visiting.

A little over two years ago, Dr. Greg Keifer joined the team, making house calls and providing wonderful care. As Sally began to slow down and an inoperable melanoma became more aggressive, the pandemic hit and that created new challenges. But still, she kept her positive attitude as she looked forward to nightly emails and photos from Mike’s wife Susan, and morning emails from Lynn Lindberg. Throughout the pandemic, Sally ended almost every phone conversation with Mike with the sentence, “Aren’t we lucky!”

Beginning in late 2020, Jennifer from Hospice began helping with Sally’s care once a week, and when COVID vaccinations were available, Susie’s best friends Susan Perry and Lynn Lindberg came to visit, as did Sally’s good friends Pat and David Schmitt and Lou Tolhurst. Sally always had a wonderful time looking through photo albums and sharing memories with visitors. It was only the past few months, after a late-night fall, that she needed someone to stay the night with her.

Thanks to Semoy, a team of talented women were

by Sally’s side every evening, playing Scrabble, and making sure she was comfortable. In early October, the melanoma became more invasive, but Sally still rarely complained.

When Sally lost her appetite and began sleeping more each day, Semoy and John rallied the troops and had someone at the house 24 hours a day. Lynn and her husband Cy came back down to Marathon in mid-October and Lynn spent every day of the last week sitting at Sally’s bedside, and reading to her.

Father Luis Perez from San Pablo Church came to visit on Thursday, October 21st and delivered the last rites, then the following day Sally slipped away peacefully at home in her own bed.

She was preceded in death by her parents Emmitt DeVere “ED” and Mildred “Millie” Harger Vining, Sally's husband Joseph Charles Whalton IV, and daughter Susie Whalton Gardner. Surviving Sally are her sons Joseph Charles Whalton V and his wife Gaye, John DeVere Whalton and his wife Kitty, and Michael James Whalton and his wife Susan. Grandchildren are Joseph Charles Whalton VI, Adina DeWandel, and Alex Whalton. During her lifetime, Sally was blessed to have known five Joseph Charles Whaltons, from III (her husband’s father) to VII (JoJo, her great-grandson).

A celebration of life will be held next spring when the weather is good, and family and friends can gather at the Key West Cemetery and on the white sand flats off Grassy Key. There, Sally’s ashes will join Joe’s & Susie’s, in two of her favorite places.

JANET ANN TITTLE 1940-2021

Janet Ann Tittle of Fairborn, Ohio passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2021 with her daughter by her side. She was born Sept. 5, 1940 in Lima, Ohio to Benjamin and Mary Reynolds.

Janet will be remembered for her independent spirit, strength, courage and loving nature. She spent many years as a hotshot driver out of Houston, Texas. and traveled throughout the U.S. She was a longtime resident of Marathon. She loved her rescue dogs, participated in bowling leagues and deep sea fishing tournaments. She loved the Florida Keys, Christmastime, reading, acquiring a large collection of elephants and watching movies on her VHS tapes.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Joyce A. Blue; brother, Dean (Patti) Reynolds; sister, Stephanie A. Timmons; and granddaughter, Audra Clair Blue; and her dear friends, Lindsay Rabito-Leonard, Linda Crocker, Pat Gewlas and Pat (Carol) Reilly.

She is preceded in death by her father, Benjamin H. Reynolds; mother, Mary E. Flynn; son, Todd Alan Tittle; and grandson, Preston Alan Blue.

Janet will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at a later date.

Chamber Best Friend Award: This award is presented to a person or business that is always there to help the Marathon chamber, putting in time and effort and showing dedication to the chamber’s causes and mission. The Chamber Best Friend for 2021 is Tricia Baker with Marathon Lumber, winning the award over fellow nominees Christina McIntyre from Food for Thought and Sandra Bradshaw.

“Thank you, chamber members, for this Best Friend Award,” said Baker. “I try to do what I can to help, and with all the crazy times we’ve had, it’s kind of nice to be recognized.”

Humanitarian Award: The Humanitarian Award is presented to a business that is always striving to help those in need within the Middle Keys community. Presents in Paradise takes home 2021’s Humanitarian Award over nominees Overseas Pub & Grill, Brutus Seafood, and FIRM. “I just want to say thank you to this amazing community,” said founder Sarah Bartus. “Presents in Paradise started in 2003 and we had 14 kids. This year, we’re expecting over 500, and we couldn’t do it without all the support and all the wonderful people that live here. What an honor.”

he Key West World Championship powerboat races, presented by Race World Offshore, started Nov. 10 at Truman Waterfront and Key West Harbor.

The screaming boats shot fans of white water into the air while rounding the turns, followed closely by helicopters hovering close for safety.

The first races of the week saw one boat flip over due to wind and choppy water, but both racers looked to be uninjured while sitting atop their capsized boat.

Additional race days are Friday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 14. A boat parade and street party will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Duval Street.

A tradition since the tragic events of 9/11, the event was filled with songs, letters and speeches by Switlik students in a fitting tribute to those who served our country. 23-year Army veteran Leslie A. White addressed the crowd as the event’s guest speaker, and the ceremony drew to a close with a rendition of “God Bless the USA” led by new Marathon Mayor John Bartus. Proposed New Anchoring Law Worries Resident I have lived in Monroe County for 40 years, 30 of them as a responsibly anchored liveaboard. Presently, I live in Marathon and have been safely and securely anchored in the same spot for 10 years. I inspect my anchors regularly and upgrade before every hurricane season.

My concerns about these proposed new regulations are as follows.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Being required to move my anchors four times a year will quadruple the impact on the sea floor. Anchors need time to properly set and efficiency varies with bottom conditions.

There are at present 127 boats anchored in Boot Key Harbor. Protecting the sea grass beds is best done by establishing stable and well maintained anchoring systems , NOT by requiring 600 re-anchoring events per year.

2. LOCAL IMPACT Adding 100 or 300 new moorings to Key West will do nothing to improve the derelict vessel situation in Marathon. BKH has 226 moorings, with around 60 available at present. By Thanksgiving and up through Easter, these will be fully occupied mostly by transients and snowbirds with a weekslong waitlist. A great amount of the 127 anchored boats are local working people and retirees who contribute greatly to the community and economy. So what will happen?

The locals will be forced to get on the limited amount of available moorings, making Marathon lose its reputation as a winter destination and cruisingfriendly port. Or worse yet, our workforce will have to move 1 mile every 3 months, placing them outside the safety and convenience of the harbor.

We need our own tailor-made solution for Marathon.

3. WE ALREADY HAVE A SOLUTION Please, just enforce existing regulations. Require boats to prove they can safely leave, navigate and return to their anchors under their own power.

Those that can't are the ones "at risk" and further action will need to be taken. Please don't penalize those of us who readily comply to all safety and environmental rules.

Let's be reasonable and compassionate!

FWC to boaters: look out for manatees November is Manatee Awareness Month, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is reminding people on the water to slow down and look out for migrating manatees this time of year. As water temperatures cool this season, manatees are naturally migrating to warmer waters around the state. Boaters are advised to go slow, and look out below to allow them to swim safely.

While manatees are large, they can be difficult to see in the water. That is why it is important to: follow guidelines and follow all manatee protection zones; look out while boating; wear polarized glasses and always give them space. Manatee protection zones are marked by waterway signs and maps of manatee protection zones are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee by clicking on “Data and Maps.”

Physically handling a distressed or stranded manatee might cause more harm. Instead, boaters should report injured, distressed, sick or dead manatees to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or dialing #FWC or *FWC on a cellphone so trained responders can help.

n Nov. 9, Marathon High School students and faculty gathered together to give the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams a proper sendoff as they travel to their upcoming state meet on Friday, Nov. 12 in Tallahassee.

Coming off a strong showing at their regional meet, in which the boys and girls pulled off second and eighth place finishes, respectively, both teams were thrilled to qualify for the state championship races together for the third straight season. Marathon will look for strong team performances led by Monroe County individual champion Pedro Zapata on the boys’ side. For the girls, Rain Banks and Maeve Merryman will look to fill the shoes of injured Monroe County silver medalist Mikkel Ross.

FINDING A NEW VOICE Jaimie Roberts’ The VOice of Cake offers self-taught custom confections ALEX RICKERT

“W

henever you are asked if you can do a job, tell them, ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” - Theodore Roosevelt For Jaimie Roberts and her custom pastry and confection business, The VOice of Cake, that’s the golden standard.

Experimenting with confectionery creations wasn’t always Jaimie’s passion. For 33 years, she was a full-time performer at Disney in Orlando, supplementing her main career by teaching workshops and voice lessons as well as booking performances at conventions and private gigs.

As it did for so many others, COVID put an abrupt halt to it all. “Everything stopped,” said Roberts. “We were about three months in, and all my bookings started canceling.”

Eventually, she received the most painful message. “I was at Disney since 1987, and my 33 years as a performer ended with an email addressed ‘Dear Cast Member.’”

For Roberts, her initial foray into baking was a way to cope with the crushing news. “There was no last show, there was no farewell, there was no cast party. I was really depressed, and I wanted to bake something.” She began posting her creations on Facebook, sparking requests from friends for custom treats. She recalled one particular craze, however, that took her business over the top.

“There was a Facebook page called Ear For Each Other for displaced cast members trying to survive and start new endeavors,” said Roberts. “Around Christmas time, a craze for hot chocolate bombs took off, and someone posted, ‘Hey, does anyone make these?’ I had literally just ordered the molds the day before, and I hadn’t even tried one yet, but I said, ‘I do!’”

Before she knew it, she had crafted 15 different flavors and sold an estimated 9,000 hot chocolate bombs. “There was a point where I would be up all night just to make the next morning’s pickups. I even had my girlfriend come over and stay the night with me helping with bagging and labeling all the orders.”

Once the hot chocolate bomb craze died down after the holidays, Roberts still had plenty to challenge herself with. In her eyes, inexperience with a particular creation or technique wasn’t an acceptable reason to say no. “Someone would send me a picture and say, ‘Hey, can you do this?’ So I would go on YouTube and practice until I could deliver them what they wanted.”

Even after relocating from central Florida to the Keys with her fiance Scott, Roberts continued to promote her business via Facebook and take on new ventures. Working under Florida’s cottage food law, her current offerings include custom cakes, cupcakes, chocolate and caramel pretzel rods, chocolate covered oreos,

hot chocolate bombs, caramel apples, rice krispy treats, and more. But as she confirmed, she’s always excited to learn more.

“Honestly, I wait until somebody says, ‘Who can make these?’ and I say, ‘I can!’”

Roberts admitted that she does miss her time as an entertainer. “I was the longest standing female entertainer at Disney, and I would still love to find opportunities for jazz vocals here in the Keys.” The name (and spelling) of her business even pay tribute to years of earning income with her voice and voice-over (VO, get it?) work.

However, she has still found meaning in her new venture.

“I bake, and it’s an awesome thing, because it makes people happy. For me, that’s my applause.”

WAITING ON A MISGUIDED HAWK

MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

I

t is an odd thing, sitting around, waiting for a bird to poop, but that’s exactly what I was doing, and what I had been doing for at least the last halfhour.

My camera was on the table in front of me. A hundred yards away, sitting in a coconut palm, was a Swainson’s hawk, a juvenile I believe. From a distance it looked not unlike a football balanced on top of an arcing green frond. You could have been convinced it was an old coconut if its posture wasn’t so upright.

My interest in seeing the Swainson’s poop was not scatological. Birds poop before they fly, kind of like a poker tell. The general opinion is that it’s a way of lightening the load, but also of maybe keeping a sneak attack from coming up behind them. I’ve been looking for a scientific term for this phenomenon – exit elimination? defensive defecation? – but so far, no luck, despite it being a phenomenon every birder knows.

The hawk had flown by me earlier, chased by a screaming osprey that considered it an intruder. Despite the racket, I didn’t catch onto it until the last second, and only got a blurry shot of the bird with one wing out of frame.

I went through the mandatory period of disappointment and self-recrimination after that, and was starting to shift my thoughts to other things, when I noticed that same Swainson’s perched up in the coconut palm. So in theory, to get a better shot, all I had to do was sit there and wait for the bird to poop before taking off, and if it flew towards me, I might even get a good shot.

While I was sitting there, I kept thinking about the Scottish wildlife photographer Alan McFadyen. Actually, I wasn’t thinking about him – I had to look up his name to write that last sentence – so much as the one shot he took that went kind of viral for its technical perfection. It was of a common kingfisher, a diving bird, shot in total symmetry and amazingly good light, bullet straight, with its bill just barely piercing the surface of a still lake. In all the stories about it, McFadyen said it had taken him approximately six years, 4,200 hours, and 720,000 frames to get the picture he wanted. Technical brilliance is not what I love about photography, but whenever I screw up a shot, or get impatient, the visage of McFadyen, or at least my imagined version of him, is standing there in my psyche, arms folded, shaking his head at my lack of perseverance and preparedness. If it was any other bird, or at least most other birds, I probably wouldn’t have waited a half-hour. But Swainson’s hawks aren’t overly common in the Keys, or even west of the Mississippi, and while we see a small number here every year, it’s only for a couple weeks, usually in November.

Swainson’s hawks are known for their near-uniform behavior.

Pretty much their entire population abandons North America every fall to fly more than 6,000 miles to Brazil. Almost 350,000 of them have been counted migrating through Panama City, Panama in a single season. Almost 850,000 of them have been counted passing over hawk count sites in Vera Cruz, Mexico in a single season.

We get about 65 of them flying past the Florida Keys Hawkwatch every year, mostly young birds, mostly birds that should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque. For some reason most of them are seen in November, when the winds tend to come up, and they don’t stay very long, presumably deciding, once they’re all the way down here, to cross over to Cuba, so they can island-hop south.

They are such beautiful flyers, though, strong, assured, direct.

When the hawk had initially landed in the tree, I held up my camera, figuring he was going to take off again at any second, but as time went on and my arms began to numb, I started lowering in the interest of blood circulation. Then the bird would twitch or turn its head or fluff out its feathers and I’d hold the camera up until my arms went numb again.

Finally, the bird did it – leaned forward, raised its tail feathers, and let out a long, skinny stream of white stuff. Then he shuffled his feathers again, stepped out into the air, and opened his wings.

His back had been toward me, and when he made the move, I feared I’d been sitting there for half an hour just to have the bird fly the other way, but he made a quarter turn, flew a little more, then banked again. I raised my camera, but the bird was nothing but a blur. I lifted my finger and replaced it on the focus button several times, with the same results.

You’re just going to screw this up again, aren’t you? I thought.

Then the autofocus hit, and the bird came sharp in the lens. I got a shot off, then a few more, and kept shooting, even as the bird passed over and flew away, even though I decided a while ago that I really don’t need any more shots of birds flying away.

I started chimping on the back of the camera, clicking through the series to see if I got Got a bird question you’re anything good. As part of our expanded hospice care services, we’re honored to announce the launch of the Chapters Health Valor Program.

Our year-round programs and services honoring veterans and first responders include: • Licensed and professional grief counselors are available based on the need of the veteran or family to help address a wide range of mental and/or emotional needs with free counseling.

• Valor cafés for peer-to-peer activities in which veterans and first responders find comraderie in order to share stories and similar experiences.

• Community outreach and awareness allowing for a more intimate understanding about the unique needs of veterans and first responders.

• Volunteer visits from other veterans and first responders.

• Pinning ceremony to honor the services and sacrifices made by veterans and first responders at which the honoree receives a Valor pin, certificate of appreciation, and a patriotic afghan or lap blanket.
