PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY Spottswood family to buy Curry Mansion Inn from Amsterdam family

T

he Curry Mansion Inn is changing hands, from one prominent Key West family to another.

The Spottswoods are buying the stately mansion, with its white peaks, wood scrolls, widow’s walk and wraparound porch, from the Amsterdam family, who have owned it since 1973.

“The answer is yes; we are selling it to the Spottswoods,” Phil Amsterdam told the Keys Weekly on Nov. 10. “It’s not yet final, but we expect to close by the end of the year.”

Amsterdam’s parents, Edith and Al Amsterdam, bought the property in 1973. Phil and his sister, Patsy, have owned it since Edith’s death in 2016 at the age of 91. (Al Amsterdam died in 2001.)

“It’s very bittersweet,” Phil Amsterdam said. “But we’re very glad it will remain in the hands of a Key West family.” So are the Spottswoods.

Robert Spottswood, who grew up and still lives in the same block of Caroline Street, was friends with the family who lived in the mansion before the Amsterdams. He remembers playing in and running through the mansion.

“The Curry Mansion was and is an amazing place. I watched it go from a single-family residence to the inn of today, and of course, Edith and my mom were the best of friends. She was a great, great steward of that property. When I came

back home to Key West years ago, I had started a conversation with Phil Amsterdam’s late brother, Bruce, and said if they ever wanted to sell, to please keep us in mind.

“A few months ago, Phil and Patsy called. They said their mom, Edith, had wanted to give us a shot at buying the place,” Spottswood said, adding that the aging property does need some TLC. “We’ll continue operating the inn as usual for the next six months or so; then in the summertime, we’ll get to work polishing her up to make all of the former owners proud of what she is and what she’ll continue to be — an important part of Key West’s history and heritage.”

As the story goes, Edith and Al Amsterdam had docked their yacht in Key West in 1973 and were walking down Caroline Street when Edith saw what she described as a white wedding-cake mansion, lit from the inside by crystal chandeliers.

A For Sale hung in the front yard of the property that had once belonged to William Curry, Florida’s first self-made millionaire. Curry built a home at 511 Caroline St. in 1869, but his son, Milton, in 1901, tore it down and built the Georgian Revival-style structure that stands today as one of Key West’s most notable properties.

“Fully intending it as their private home, the Amsterdams began the arduous task of rehabilitation and restoration, but reality and skyrocketing real estate taxes forced them to look at other options,” states the inn’s website. “The home was turned into a bed and breakfast in 1988 and has been operating continuously since.”

The Curry family sold the house in 1920 and two other families owned it until 1973.

The Curry Mansion Inn includes 28 guest rooms spread among three different buildings, including the mansion, the guest wing and the historic James House, across the street at 512 Caroline St. The mansion at 511 Caroline St. was most recently valued at $6.34 million by the Monroe County Property Appraiser. The James House is valued at $2.33 million.

The sale price has not been disclosed.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY GUITARIST DEREK TRUCKS BRITT MYERS

n 2012, B.B. King performed on stage alongside John Mayer and Derek Trucks. At the conclusion, King remarked of Trucks’ ability, “That’s about as good as I’ve ever heard it.” On Sunday, Nov. 14, fans in Key West and across the country will converge to hear Trucks perform live at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater.

Trucks, a well publicized child prodigy who joined his uncle Butch’s famed band, The Allman Brothers, in 1999, has toured or played alongside other legends throughout his career — Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton and Stephen Stills. And yet perhaps the greatest talent to perform with Trucks has been his wife, Susan Tedeschi. Together, the famed pair created The Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010.

Today, the Tedeschi Trucks Band is considered by most musicians as a deity within the profession. Legendary performers, spanning dozens of genres from blues to rock, still clamor for an opportunity to join Trucks and Tedeschi on stage. And with accolades that include multiple Grammy Awards and a Rolling Stone cover (which also counts Trucks among its 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time), Trucks has earned his way into the conversation of “Greatest of All Time.” Instead, the Jacksonville native maintains a humble approach to his greatness, constantly deflecting the praise back to those who have inspired him along the way.

This week we caught up with Trucks on our Florida Keys Weekly Podcast. During the segment, Derek talks about the last time he was in Key West at the age of 9, playing live at Sloppy Joe’s. And what it was like to perform with and honor his idol — the legendary B.B. King. We even asked Derek about the inside story behind that viral video after a 2016 Cubs game, where he and Eddie Vedder were filmed playing “The Weight” by The Band at a crowded bar, as Bill Murray jammed out in the crowd.

Have you been to Key West before or when was the last time you were here? Some of the first gigs I ever played outside of Jacksonville when I was 9 was down at Sloppy Joe’s with a band called Ace Moreland and the Westside Story, which was a blues band from up here.

We played down there a handful of times when I was really, really young. But I haven’t been back since. Me and Sue took an early vacation, before kids, down to Key Largo and got certified to dive, but we didn’t make it all the way down, so I haven’t been back since. It’s a trip …

30-something years ago.

You’ve played with nearly every great guitar player, including B.B. King, who said you are as good as it gets. And you really are a bucket list guy they all want to play with, but are there any bucket list people you want to perform or play with? Man, I think B.B. really was that bucket list guy for me. Sue had toured with him a lot and I really never had gotten on stage with him, so those handful of times that I got to play with B.B. and hang with B.B., with Sue there, too. There are those moments in time when you are in that moment and you’re just like, ’This is it’ … this is one of the peak moments of your life, you’re in it right now.’ He really was what you thought he was.

He was that sweet and that pure and a total treasure.

We have to ask you about that viral video from 2016, when you and Eddie Vedder were recorded playing “The Weight”by The Band at a crowded house party following a Cubs playoff game. In that video, Bill Murray can be seen jamming out in the crowd as well.

So how did that all come together and what is the real story behind that moment? We were all there for those Cubs games. The last pitcher to throw against the Cubs in a World Series leading into that was Virgil Trucks, my uncle, so I was like, ‘I’ve got to get there for that first World Series game at Wrigley.’ We ran into Bill Murray quite a few times on the road. He’s an incredible guy — quite a character and a music fan. So we somehow ran into him that night. He was basically the mayor of Chicago at that point and we ended up at this bar across the street from Wrigley and Eddie Vedder was there and I was in no shape to play music, but somebody handed me an acoustic and it was just one thing after another. It was quite a night.

KEY WEST CITY HALL REPORT OFFICIALS TACKLE LOTS OF TOPICS MANDY MILES mandy@keysweekly.com

ey West city officials had plenty on their plates for the Nov. 3 city commission meeting, which started with a surprise presentation for Jimmy Weekley to celebrate the city’s purchase of the Key West Historic Seaport 29 years ago. (Story on page 30.)

The commissioners then heard several updates about important topics. So here goes: CRUISE SHIPS First, the great cruise ship debate: City Attorney Shawn Smith told the commissioners he and City Manager Patti McLauchlin had met the prior week, individually, with representatives from Safer Cleaner Ships, Pier B and Caribe Nautical ships’ agents.

“We had some very productive conversations and we now have a better understanding of where each group stands,” Smith said. “We may break up the mediation process into individual subjects.”

In the meantime, the city is still seeking an outside attorney to help draft, and then defend in court, the ordinances that would finalize the city’s new cruise ship size limits.

Smith was scheduled to meet Nov. 5 with a Fort Lauderdale attorney, who was reviewing some of the city’s documentation and checking to see if he has any conflicts of interest.

“This will be a dual path, as we’ve discussed,” Smith said. “We’re talking to the groups involved while also drafting the ordinances.”

Smith has repeatedly warned the commission that imposing the cruise ship limits on the privately owned Pier B will likely prompt a pricey lawsuit against the city. Those concerns eventually prompted Commissioner Sam Kaufman to propose formal mediation among the involved groups.

OTHER UPDATES Smith also updated the commission on the city’s Charter and District Boundary Review Committee, which is drafting suggested changes to the city charter and its voting district boundaries. Commissioners are in the process of looking at the district boundary changes and making suggestions.

At the Nov. 3 meeting, Commissioner Sam Kaufman asked that the City Marina at Garrison Bight remain in District 2, while Commissioner Billy Wardlow wants Go Lane to remain in his district. The new housing to be developed at Truman Waterfront will be part of Commissioner Clayton Lopez’s District 6.

Despite the absence of a parade and street fair, Key West’s Fantasy Fest was deemed a success.

Then it was McLauchlin’s turn to report to the commission. She started with Fantasy Fest.

“I was downtown with Chief Sean Brandenburg Friday and Saturday nights, walking the 100 through 800 blocks of Duval Street,” McLauchlin said. “I truly believe we had a very successful Fantasy Fest. Even without the parade and street fair, our businesses were happy. I do think it’s time to rethink and revamp Fantasy Fest and see what this community wants.”

She added that she had not received a report yet from the health department about any uptick in COVID cases that resulted from the crowded week in Key West.

Kaufman suggested a workshop that would enable officials and stakeholders to discuss the future of Fantasy Fest. He also commended McLauchlin and her staff for skillfully managing so many items and projects.

McLauchlin reported that the commissioners on Tuesday, Nov. 16 will be able to select a developer to build the long-awaited workforce housing on the last 3.2 acres of Truman Waterfront.

The commission on Dec. 7 will consider plans for the city’s new Sidewalk Cafe program.

The outdoor dining initiative started as a result of COVID, but met with tremendous success and support from local restaurant owners, who want to continue it indefinitely.

McLauchlin reported that the engineer working for Santa Clara Condominiums, which faces significant structural concerns, had submitted to the city copies of his bid documents that will select a contractor to begin the extensive repairs to the building. Bids are due Dec. 7, McLauchlin said.

IN OTHER COMMISSION NEWS...

Officials unanimously approved a resolution denouncing youth violence and committing to do more to prevent it.

many young people are no longer with us today because someone missed one of those flags or unwittingly contributed to a violent response.”

The city will work with Grieving Families of Youth Violence, the group founded by Phyllis Jackson, whose son was killed by youth violence.

Statewide legislation surrounding liveaboard vessels continues to draw criticism and concern. The city commission supported the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission in undertaking a survey of Key West liveaboard vessels to have a valid number of boaters before passing legislation aimed at regulating sewage pump-out and ridding the waters of derelict vessels.

“We need the data, not just for the numbers, but to develop the best regulations for derelict vessels and our managed mooring fields,” Kaufman said.

On a related topic, a fence surrounding part of a beach area next to the Marriott Beachside Hotel continues to be a source of dispute among liveaboard boaters, who can no longer access the area with their dinghies.

“That is an illegal fence on public property,” resident Christine Lininger told the commissioners during the public comment period.

“It’s in your job description to stand up for the people of the city of Key West and not just for Robert Spottswood and his hotel property.”

Spottswood owns the Marriott Beachside Hotel at the entrance to Key West.

eventeen-year-old Daniela Briones-Moreno, a Key West High School senior with plans to go to college, stood up and spoke about the district’s dress code at the Oct. 26 school board meeting after years of frustration.

“I realize our schools’ intention with the dress code is to get us ready for our professional lives, and I completely understand that,” she said. “But you are also enforcing the dress code with the rationale that males are distracted by what we wear, which isn’t right.

You are teaching us that males will never respect women unless we dress properly and that the way you dress determines how you get respected.”

Ironically, after the meeting, Briones-Moreno realized that the shirt she was wearing, a black top that was off the shoulder, would not have met Key West High School standards. She may have been “dress-coded,” the students’ lingo for when they are told to either go home and change or cover up.

“The off-the-shoulder top was just a coincidence,” she told Keys Weekly. “I gave a speech and was dressed professionally.”

Per Keysschools.com, Monroe County School District has a general dress code, but each school can make more specific requirements.

Key West High School’s dress code policy says: “Tops must have sleeves that cover the shoulder. No sleeveless, straps or bare midriff tops are permitted. Shirts and tops must extend over the waist; no skin may be exposed at the belly/ waist line; shirts may not be seethrough.”

The reason for the modesty?

Teachers have told Briones-Moreno that “shoulders are distracting.”

But the student pointed out that how a young woman is dressed is sometimes inconsequential. She was once harassed in middle school by a group of boys when she was wearing “a giant Tshirt and jeans.”

Briones-Moreno is also frustrated that the way the dress code is enforced is inconsistent among body types. She describes herself

as having a “curvier build.” She remembers an incident where she was stopped at the school’s front gates and “dress-coded.” She was asked to put on a sweater because she was slightly revealing her midriff. But a friend “with a slimmer build” who was standing next to her was wearing “almost a sports bra” and was not dress-coded.

A Middle Keys mother who wishes to remain anonymous told Keys Weekly that she is a high school parent who thinks the dress code “does put an unfair burden on the girls. It makes the boys’ comfort and education more important than the girls’ experience. And I think it is difficult for them to fairly enforce it. It tends to be a certain body type that gets singled out.”

Briones-Moreno said she’s getting support from teachers. She feels that a solution would be for respect to be taught in the curriculum starting from kindergarten — not just to boys but also to girls.

She has seen girls shame each other for what they are wearing.

Her plan is to come back to the board and speak again — accompanied by friends — if she does not see any changes made.

“As a former principal, the dress code has guidelines for uniformity for all students,” said Amber Archer Acevedo in response to Briones-Moreno’s speech.

Archer Acevedo, the coordinator of community relations and a former Key West High School principal, said Briones-Moreno’s statements “are her opinion, not necessarily the reason for the dress code.”

ue Woltanski has an all-consuming passion. And it occupies her from when she wakes up in the morning till she goes to sleep at night: public education. “​​I think people up here know that my passion is making public education the best it can be for our kids,” she told Keys Weekly. “That is what I’m focused on almost every waking minute.”

And that is why she’s running for her second term for District 5 of Monroe County’s school board against newcomer Alexandria Suarez. Woltanski said she simply isn’t finished with having her voice be heard.

Per keyssschools.com, District 5 starts from the easternmost boundary of District 4 — MM 93 — east to the Dade County line, including all of mainland Monroe County.

Woltanski was elected, unopposed, as District 5’s representative in 2018. She is a retired pediatrician and a mother of two Monroe County students, one of whom, Ali, graduated from Coral Shores High School and is attending Georgetown University with a major in foreign service.

Woltanski was raised in the San Francisco Bay area, where her father was a local school administrator. She attended U.C. Santa Barbara as an undergraduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology, and U.C. Davis for a master’s degree in exercise physiology), before moving to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where she ultimately specialized in general pediatrics.

She and her husband, Tom, an ER physician, have been homeowners in Tavernier since 1999. They moved permanently to the Keys in 2008 so their children could grow up next door to their grandmother.

“I’m not done serving the children of Monroe,” she said. “My son (Zack, in 10th grade) is still in school. Projects we’ve started, like with mental health, I’d like to see fulfilled. For example, the superintendent would like more social workers with a mental health focus.

ciated with the accountability system.

The amount of testing in the schools is the reason I got into following education policy. This is an opportunity for the district to move to a more studentfocused and less test-focused system of education.”

Her background as a pediatrician led to her advocacy for COVID mitigation strategies, including the use of masks, in the school system during the pandemic. Her stance at times was at odds with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order that only parents should decide whether a child wears a mask to school.

“I’m guided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and pediatricians support public health measures,” she said. “The biggest advances in children’s health have been through public health measures like car seats, seatbelts and vitamin D in milk. Pediatricians know the value of doing what’s best for all children. I think we’re moving out of (the pandemic). I doubt we’ve seen the last wave, but I’m hopeful no wave will be as bad as the one Delta was.”

Woltanski pointed out that during this time, she has seen other school districts as a target of anger and vitriol from within their own communities.

“When I speak to people here, I don’t get that feeling,” she said. “I think we want what’s best for our kids, as seen by the donations to scholarships, fundraisers and renewing tax referendums for the schools. The kids are being well-served by a community that values education. I’m privileged to be a part of that.”

So how did a small, locally-owned Keys company immediately compete with the metropolitan goliaths? It began with one mission, which was to apply a “quality over quantity” approach to its clients. Today, the quality has become apparent for businesses across the Keys.

The organization was started in late 2020 with just three staff members: chief operations officer Annie Briening along with Jason Koler and Britt Myers, who both also serve as co-owners of Keys Weekly Media, which spans from Key Largo to Key West.

“I knew Jason and Britt for many years and we discussed the need for a locally owned digital company on several occasions,” said Briening. “But I was sold on the idea once I realized the emphasis would be on ‘one client at a time’ with a focus on quality and service.”

Briening added that digital companies often face two pitfalls — they can either grow too quickly and their ability to service clients suffers, or most commonly, under-qualified individuals offer general digital services to companies but lack the qualifications and expertise that is needed.

Within 12 months, OMG doubled its staff, launched 15 websites and won accolades — specifically, the 2021 Newcomer Award from the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce.

“The Marathon Chamber of Commerce hired OMG to handle the lion’s share of our digital marketing campaign for a new event, Florida Keys BrewBQ,” said chamber executive director Daniel Samess. “OMG staff also built us a website from scratch for the event. We could not be more pleased with the results. We have a well-functioning, attractive website, as well as social media pages OMG also created and managed for us.”

Briening is proud of their progress in such a short amount of time. While digital services can seemingly appear confusing on the surface, she says her job is to provide continued service and communication — and make websites, SEO, social media and other digital elements easy and efficient for her clients.

“I’m excited about our quality over quantity approach, about how we wrap our arms around our clients,” she said. “We build close relationships and have fun with it. One of my proudest accomplishments is when our client considers us a part of their team.”

Over the past year, OMG has hired new staff members Maison Benitez, social media manager/digital strategist; Marla Orlowski, website designer/developer; and Chanice Dos Santos, media manager/content creator.

Koler said the impetus behind the founding of OMG was partly created by the pandemic as more and more businesses (including Keys Weekly) delved farther into digital marketing.

“There just wasn’t a quality digital solution for clients of the Weekly,” he said. “We grew frustrated with the quality of content and service our clients were receiving and we heard them asking for solutions almost daily. We simply got tired of sending our clients to a company that wouldn’t call them back — or operated out of Chicago or Miami and never set foot in the Keys. How can you service a client, and better yet, tell their story, if you don’t live here and visit them with consistency?”

OMG clients range from restaurants and local events to Realtors and nonprofits. But for Myers and Koler, it all began with one cornerstone in mind — Briening.

“Britt and I always knew the service was needed, but the trick was to find a locally respected business person, with the digital talents to compete with anyone in the world,” said Koler. “Our success is measured by Annie and her team’s hard work and that shows in our clients’ satisfaction. The referrals we’ve received in such a short amount of time is humbling and satisfying.”

Myers echoed Koler’s evaluation, and emphasized the job is never complete, which is why the service component is so important.

Annie Briening graduated from Pennsylvania’s East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in art and design, moved to Key West in 2006 with her now-husband and hasn’t looked back. She worked in marketing for nine years at First State Bank and built a foundation of business relationships through her work with local organizations. She serves as a board member of the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

TAKE STOCK INVESTS IN SCHOLARS & SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM WELCOMES 42 NEW KEYS STUDENTS

T

ake Stock in Children, the scholarship program that provides college scholarships to low-income students, recently added 42 new students to its ranks, bringing Monroe County’s total program enrollment to 303 scholars.

Using money raised by private donations, Take Stock buys Florida PrePaid College scholarships and spends them on deserving students who sign a contract in middle school. They pledge to stay in school and out of trouble while maintaining a C average. In return, Take Stock in Children provides a scholarship that pays for two years at a community college and two years at a Florida university.

The contract signings took place throughout the Keys the last week of October. At Key West’s Horace O’Bryant School, Take Stock program director Chuck LicisMasson introduced the initiative and its Monroe County founder, John Padget.

Bryan Green, chairman of the Monroe County Education Foundation, which sponsors Take Stock, congratulated the students, and especially their parents, who smile with relief as soon as the ink is dry on their kids’ signatures.

WAITING ON A MISGUIDED HAWK

MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

I

t is an odd thing, sitting around, waiting for a bird to poop, but that’s exactly what I was doing, and what I had been doing for at least the last halfhour.

My camera was on the table in front of me. A hundred yards away, sitting in a coconut palm, was a Swainson’s hawk, a juvenile I believe. From a distance it looked not unlike a football balanced on top of an arcing green frond. You could have been convinced it was an old coconut if its posture wasn’t so upright.

My interest in seeing the Swainson’s poop was not scatological. Birds poop before they fly, kind of like a poker tell. The general opinion is that it’s a way of lightening the load, but also of maybe keeping a sneak attack from coming up behind them. I’ve been looking for a scientific term for this phenomenon – exit elimination? defensive defecation? – but so far, no luck, despite it being a phenomenon every birder knows.

The hawk had flown by me earlier, chased by a screaming osprey that considered it an intruder. Despite the racket, I didn’t catch onto it until the last second, and only got a blurry shot of the bird with one wing out of frame.

I went through the mandatory period of disappointment and self-recrimination after that, and was starting to shift my thoughts to other things, when I noticed that same Swainson’s perched up in the coconut palm. So in theory, to get a better shot, all I had to do was sit there and wait for the bird to poop before taking off, and if it flew towards me, I might even get a good shot.

While I was sitting there, I kept thinking about the Scottish wildlife photographer Alan McFadyen. Actually, I wasn’t thinking about him – I had to look up his name to write that last sentence – so much as the one shot he took that went kind of viral for its technical perfection. It was of a common kingfisher, a diving bird, shot in total symmetry and amazingly good light, bullet straight, with its bill just barely piercing the surface of a still lake. In all the stories about it, McFadyen said it had taken him approximately six years, 4,200 hours, and 720,000 frames to get the picture he wanted. Technical brilliance is not what I love about photography, but whenever I screw up a shot, or get impatient, the visage of McFadyen, or at least my imagined version of him, is standing there in my psyche, arms folded, shaking his head at my lack of perseverance and preparedness. If it was any other bird, or at least most other birds, I probably wouldn’t have waited a half-hour. But Swainson’s hawks aren’t overly common in the Keys, or even west of the Mississippi, and while we see a small number here every year, it’s only for a couple weeks, usually in November.

Swainson’s hawks are known for their near-uniform behavior.

Pretty much their entire population abandons North America every fall to fly more than 6,000 miles to Brazil. Almost 350,000 of them have been counted migrating through Panama City, Panama in a single season. Almost 850,000 of them have been counted passing over hawk count sites in Vera Cruz, Mexico in a single season.

We get about 65 of them flying past the Florida Keys Hawkwatch every year, mostly young birds, mostly birds that should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque. For some reason most of them are seen in November, when the winds tend to come up, and they don’t stay very long, presumably deciding, once they’re all the way down here, to cross over to Cuba, so they can island-hop south.

They are such beautiful flyers, though, strong, assured, direct.

When the hawk had initially landed in the tree, I held up my camera, figuring he was going to take off again at any second, but as time went on and my arms began to numb, I started lowering in the interest of blood circulation. Then the bird would twitch or turn its head or fluff out its feathers and I’d hold the camera up until my arms went numb again.

Finally, the bird did it – leaned forward, raised its tail feathers, and let out a long, skinny stream of white stuff. Then he shuffled his feathers again, stepped out into the air, and opened his wings.

His back had been toward me, and when he made the move, I feared I’d been sitting there for half an hour just to have the bird fly the other way, but he made a quarter turn, flew a little more, then banked again. I raised my camera, but the bird was nothing but a blur. I lifted my finger and replaced it on the focus button several times, with the same results.

You’re just going to screw this up again, aren’t you? I thought.

Then the autofocus hit, and the bird came sharp in the lens. I got a shot off, then a few more, and kept shooting, even as the bird passed over and flew away, even though I decided a while ago that I really don’t need any more shots of birds flying away.

I started chimping on the back of the camera, clicking through the series to see if I got Got a bird question you’re anything good. On that day in 1991, the Whitehead Street Presidential Gates opened to receive a procession of honored guests, including U.S. Secretary of the Navy Henry Garrett, Truman Library Director Dr. Ben Zobrist and Monroe County Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey, to the North Lawn of the Truman Little White House for the grand opening ceremony.

Built in 1890 to serve as the naval station’s command headquarters during the SpanishAmerican War, World War I and World War II, the historic site later became the second White House to President Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the U.S. The house has been host to presidents Dwight Eisenhower, William Howard Taft, Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy,

Richard Nixon, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, along with other world leaders and dignitaries for summits, relaxation, recuperation and peace talks, playing a role in the shaping of America’s future here and abroad.

The Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation is a nonprofit that serves to preserve the Truman Little White House as Florida’s only presidential museum, sharing the history of the American presidency and supporting civic engagement, education and the historic and cultural influences of the Truman era.

DECEMBER TRIAL DATE SET FOR ASSAULT CASE

2 MEN ARE CHARGED WITH RAPING THE SAME WOMAN IN SEPTEMBER

T

wo men accused of raping the same woman within the span of an hour on Sept. 11 remain in jail and are awaiting trial.

Jorge Calderon Nunez, 30, is charged with sexual battery and burglary with battery. Court records are sealed for the sexual battery charge, but the records for the burglary charge show Nunez entered a written plea of not guilty during his Oct. 14 arraignment, which took place via Zoom from the Stock Island jail with the presence of a Spanish interpreter.

Nunez is scheduled for pretrial hearings for both charges on Nov. 30 in front of Judge Mark Wilson. His trial date has been set for Dec. 13, according to court records.

Kerry “Calvin” Gasag, 37, is charged with sexual battery, false imprisonment and tampering with evidence. His court records are sealed, but he, too, has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Nov. 30, according to court documents.

What happened?

The anguished story of the Key West tourist circulated globally on social media, where headlines stated that a man rescued a woman from a rapist, only to attack her himself behind Key West’s most iconic landmark.

The woman reportedly walked from her hotel to Duval Street, where she had a few drinks at a sports bar. She told police her memory was foggy, but shortly after midnight on Sept. 11 on Whitehead Street, she allegedly accepted a ride from a man in a silver SUV, later identified as Nunez. The woman later told police she quickly realized she was “in a bad situation,” and demanded to be let out of the car.

The victim told police Nunez instead pulled her to the ground outside of his car and raped her.

A passing Uber driver, later identified as Gasag, reportedly saw and halted the attack on Fleming Street, offering to take the woman back to her hotel.

During that encounter, the woman’s phone records a seven-minute video that records Gasag asking the woman if she wanted to have sex and telling her he could have had sex with her “back in the bushes.”

Gasag then reportedly drove to the Southernmost Point buoy, took the woman’s phone, dragged her behind the monument and allegedly sexually assaulted her. The woman’s phone was later found in a planter in front of a nearby timeshare resort. Police interviewed her at her hotel and took her to Lower Keys Medical Center, where a rape kit was completed.

Both suspects were arrested. Nunez, 30, of Key West, was suspected of the first attack, but was arrested on a prior warrant for burglary and assault while police continued the investigation. He remains in custody on a $75,000 bond for the burglary charge.

Gasag, 37, of Key West, was arrested at his home the same night for the attack that occurred at the Southernmost Point, where a webcam recorded the whole incident. Webcam footage reportedly shows Gasag dragging the woman in a headlock behind the monument, pulling his pants down and thrusting his body forward, the police report states.

The footage also captured Gasag retrieving the victim’s jean shorts from the buoy after she had sprinted away wearing only a shirt.

A police dispatcher in Boston happened to be watching the Southernmost Point webcam at the time of the attack.

He called Key West Police and, according to the police report, told dispatchers in Key West, “I think I’m watching a rape in progress.”

Officers arrived within minutes and found the victim, who was stopped and helped by people at a neighboring guest house who had heard her yelling. Dispatchers also alerted the officers to the presence of the webcam footage.

Gasag was arrested a short time later at his home in Santa Clara Condominiums on Northside Drive. He admitted to being with the victim at the Southernmost Point, where they went to have “consensual sex,” but denied ever actually having sex with the woman despite webcam footage that appears to contradict his denial, the police report states.

Gasag has no prior arrests in Monroe County, other than an arrest for driving unknowingly on a suspended license, which was later cleared. The police report states he works at a retail store on Duval Street and drives for Uber. Gasag is being held in jail on a $175,000 bond.

ff U.S. 1 in Key Largo, visitors scour through Violet Wahba’s vast assortment of unique, Keysey items for the home and garden. With a display of lawn furniture and signs outside Key Lime Products, patrons enter inside to a menagerie of statues, figurines and more.

Owner of the store for the past two years, Wahba makes it a priority to greet each customer with a “hi” and “welcome” as they enter.

It’s all part of the experience when frequenting the store at MM 95.2, oceanside.

With wood carvings, ceramic and metal art, Wahba also sells bath and beauty products, candles, candy and other treats like Key lime pies. Patrons spend time outside checking out products before making their way inside to check out more unique items. Wahba said she can’t help but enjoy the store’s atmosphere.

Wahba compares walking through the doors to her business to a kid’s glowing face on Christmas. She always wanted a business in Key Largo, and then came the opportunity to run Key Lime Products, which was previously owned by John McCarthy. Wahba not only finds happiness with the many items surrounding her at the store, but she also enjoys the freedom talking to first-time visitors and the frequent faces.

“I’ve spent most of my life in customer service. I worked in the bank and in resorts, so I’ve always interacted with people,” Wahba said. “I may have had this location for two years, but I’ve been in this business for about 15 years.

So the business itself isn’t new for me.”

Wahba looks back on a moment when she was with a customer. To the side of the checkout counter, she noticed a man watching her.

Come to find out, the man was an old vendor of the store.

“He was standing there and he was waiting for me to finish with the customer. And he said, ‘By the way, you have a nice attitude.

You are really happy when you see somebody.

You’re sincere when you greet them.’”

For Wahba, the customers are precious.

“How are we going to do business without them?” she said. “I’m really happy to see them coming in and finding stuff they like. When they like the stuff, that brings me happiness knowing I picked the right stuff.

“When somebody says ‘You have too much stuff,’ I say ‘No I don’t,’ because I always have in my mind that there’s more to get,” Wahba continued. “A lot of people will send me pictures of the stuff they buy in their backyard or in their home.”

Moments of happiness also bring times of perseverance for the Key Lime Products owner. Wahba’s store was recently hit by a string of burglaries. A 48-year-old Key Largo man was arrested on Nov. 3 for stealing between $15,000 and

$20,000 in items.

It all began in mid-September when the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called to the store. Multiple LED signs and 15 boxes with ceramics and pottery were gone.

On Nov. 1, her store was hit again. This time, $4,500 worth of fixtures and souvenirs were missing. Detectives said it appeared that a portion of the fence was cut to gain entrance to Wahba’s property.

A breakthrough in the case occurred on Nov. 2, when the sheriff’s office responded to a Lime Street residence for a report of a burglary with $458 in cash stolen. A witness who saw someone breaking into the residence identified the subject, Shane Everett Earp. Detectives visited Earp’s residence and discovered items from the Key Lime Products store in plain sight.

A search warrant was obtained and Earp was taken to jail.

Wahba admits that she went through hell with the recent string of burglaries. But she carries on with a big smile, awaiting patrons to walk through her door.

“I love what I do and I can’t wait to welcome customers in,” she said.

Along with her business, Wahba enjoys giving back to the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wahba used her store as a pickup location for hot meals in collaboration with the late Mike Forster and his nonprofit, Mangrove Mike’s Endeavors.

She’s also a Key Largo Sunset Rotarian.

He was a liar. The NFL ruled, before the season began, that the protection he said he utilized was based on his antibody levels this summer, but left his status as unvaccinated and not a deterrent to the disease.

He was ordered to wear a mask whenever he appeared before people, such as at press conferences. But he didn’t. It has been reported he also didn’t wear one at the team’s Halloween party, which was another requirement.

His team, the Green Bay Packers, is trying to keep him as a member although he has said he wants to move on. After all, he is one of the league’s best quarterbacks and its reigning Most Valuable Player. His coach, Matt LaFleur, another liar, said he was oblivious to what went on outside his immediate purview — such as at those press conferences.

Rodgers, who has already lost some commercial sponsorship, must be punished by the NFL — if he hasn’t been already. He deserves to be fined, suspended and ordered — again — to wear a mask. While they’re at it, the NFL should also punish the team and its coach.

Rodgers has been one of my favorite players. I have enjoyed watching him, at times rooting for him and applauding him.

One more rant, sort of. ESPN, which has reduced its staff by several numbers over the past year or so, decided to put its resources behind investigating an NBA owner. Its writer found that the owner had used indecent language to comment on black players and women associated with the team. In other words, he established a hostile work environment.

It became the lead item on all of the ESPN news programs. No problem with that except on the NBA Today program, newscasters Malika Andrews and Ramona Shelburne were pejorative. In other words, the newscasters found the executive guilty without a trial.

That’s not the way to report a news story. Just the facts.

While we’re at it, let’s talk about wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’s trouble in Cleveland. Well, his problems aren’t the Browns’ any more, as the player, who was a standout earlier with the New York Giants, has forced Cleveland to redo his contract and place him on waivers, in essence releasing him.

Beckham’s father publicly criticized quarterback Baker Mayfield for not throwing passes his son’s way. Beckham kept mostly quiet. So did the quarterback, who comes out the winner in this brouhaha.

Beckham was wrong. He could have made the Browns a better team and Mayfield a better quarterback, but he let his ego (and father) rule the day.

I will say this, however. When I was a good, not great, high school basketball player, my mother, Helen Morrow, attended every game and criticized every move the coach, Art Thomas, made against her son. Except her complaints were made within the walls of our home.

ony Sands grew up in South Philly listening to his parents’ Frank Sinatra records, then started singing the songs as young as 11.

He was only in his teens and 20s when he started singing in bars, then cultivated his Sinatralike style and started singing those songs in piano bars.

“Unfortunately, I have green eyes, instead of Sinatra’s blue eyes, but hopefully my vocals make up for that,” said Sands, who has been performing Sinatra’s songs and paying tribute to the musical icon’s voice, mannerisms and style for more than 30 years on stages up and down the East Coast from Key West to Atlantic City, and out west in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada.

“I remember when we used to come down to Florida for vacations, one year my folks got tickets to see Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami. I was so upset when they said I was too young and wouldn’t be allowed in. I was only 13 or so at the time,” said

Sands, who added that his first “big break” in show business was when he was “discovered” by the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, where he performed five nights a week for three years.

“I was always attracted to his music because when Frank sang, he always painted a picture, so the lyrics told a story that people could relate to,” Sands said.

His latest show, “Sinatra That’s Life” is a multimedia musical that includes seven different scenes from Sinatra’s life as a background.

“It’s really a musical of his life,” Sands said. “I go back to his early years when he performed with the big bands, then his Rat Pack days, some of his movie songs, and the final scene is when he came out of retirement in 1974 to perform at Madison Square Garden. If you don’t know much about Frank Sinatra’s life, you’ll really learn some things at the show.”

Sands performs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Key West Theater.

ine Key West senior citizens recently moved from Bayshore Manor on College Road to the newer Poinciana Gardens on Duck Avenue in Key West, completing the consolidation of assisted-living facilities in the Lower Keys and potentially saving the county more than $1 million a year.

The aging Bayshore Manor could only accommodate up to 16 residents and had no commercial kitchen for hot meal preparation.

Yet the county was spending $1.2 million a year to operate it, a figure that frustrated County Commissioner Craig Cates, who urged the county to move the Bayshore residents to Poinciana Gardens, put the $1.2 million savings toward the new Poinciana Gardens facility and use the vacant space at Bayshore Manor for county offices. Such an arrangement would save the county additional money, because it is now paying $250,000 a year to rent office space in Key West, Cates has said, calling the arrangement a “no brainer.”

County officials eventually agreed with him and enlisted financial support from the city of Key West to help fund Poinciana Gardens’ operation for up to three years.

“There’s also space available at Poinciana Gardens to have senior day care services and other activities that bring in additional revenue,” Cates said.

The Key West Housing Authority is currently in negotiations with a potential new manager of Poinciana Gardens, who has some ideas about those additional activities, Cates said.

Housing Authority spokesman Peter Batty said she’s from out of town, is licensed and would be an excellent candidate if they can come to a salary and benefits agreement.

Cates added that the county staff is now considering what to do with the Bayshore property, although he had not yet heard the latest about those options.

“The transition went extremely smoothly,” said Batty. “It’s a winwin, as the county can now close Bayshore Manor.”

he Key West World Championship powerboat races, presented by Race World Offshore, started Nov. 10 at Truman Waterfront and Key West Harbor.

The screaming boats shot fans of white water into the air while rounding the turns, followed closely by helicopters hovering close for safety.

The first races of the week saw one boat flip over due to wind and choppy water, but both racers looked to be uninjured while sitting atop their capsized boat.

Additional race days are Friday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 14. A boat parade and street party will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Duval Street.

ey West City Commissioner and former Mayor Jimmy Weekley recently recalled a day nearly 30 years ago, when he walked into a Planning Board meeting and saw a developer’s plans to acquire the downtown harbor area known as the Key West Bight and ring it with condos.

“My next stop was to the city attorney’s office, where I asked, ‘How do we stop this?’” Weekley said at the Nov. 3 city commission meeting, where he was surprised with a proclamation of gratitude for preserving the public’s waterfront access and helping to create the business district now known as the Key West Historic Seaport. “Condominiums by a private developer were not what the people of Key West needed. We had to protect and preserve our maritime heritage and the public’s access to the waterfront.”

Weekley wanted the city to buy the properties that surrounded the harbor from the Singleton family, which was looking to sell, but the city couldn’t afford the purchase.

“There was a lot of pushback from people who didn’t think the city should be buying such a viable piece of waterfront property,” Weekley recalled.

He worked with a group of local businessmen, including Tony Falcone, John Parks Jr. and Ed Swift to

pass a voter referendum authorizing the city to borrow bonds to buy the property.

In the meantime, the Trust for Public Land stepped in to help and agreed to buy the property from the Singleton family until the city could get its bond issue passed by the voters.

“The trust buys land for which a city or county has a plan to do something for the good of the public,” Swift said. “The trust bought it from the Singleton family and held it for the city until we could get the referendum passed to get the bonds for the purchase.

“Johnny Parks and I had worked out the numbers, and realized the city could make a lot of money by leasing out the spaces along the harbor,” Swift told the Keys Weekly.

On Nov. 3, 1992, exactly 29 years before the recent city commission meeting, the voters of Key West approved the bond issue and authorized the purchase of Key West Bight. The bonds were paid off entirely by December 2017 and the Historic Seaport continues to be a successful economic engine for the city of Key West.

“If not for Jimmy Weekley doing this, Key West would have lost one of the major sources of revenue and the public would have lost access to its waterfront,” Swift said.

The show is a journey through the infectious and soulful pop anthems and ballads that made household names of stars like Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield and Lulu. In this Austin Powers-like musical, hits like “To Sir With Love,” “Downtown,” “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” and “Son of A Preacher Man” frame the journey of five women during the liberating days of the 1960s that made England swing.

Under the direction of Tom Thayer, Waterfront’s artistic director, “Shout” stars Jessica Miano Kruel, Belle Jampol, Jillian Todd, Lauren Thompson and Stephanie Sander.

The first edition of “Shout” appeared on stage at the Duplex in New York in 2000 and then transferred to London’s Jermyn Street Theatre, where it was nominated as Best Musical

During its sold-out run there in 2001, the Times said the show “captures all the soulful heartbreak of the ’60s diva songbook.” WhatsOnStage.com said, “Here’s a show to really shout about. … (It) hits you with a burst of noisy energy and sheer talent that simply takes your breath away.”

The show ran off-Broadway at the Julia Miles Theatre in New York City for 176 performances in 2006.

“Shout” is directed and choreographed by Jay Falzone.

Annual trek over Key Largo bridge supports local organizations JIM McCARTHY

unners and walkers will get a view unlike any other as they head over the iconic Jewfish Creek Bridge during the First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run on Sunday, Nov. 14. An event that brings community members and visitors together will support organizations and causes in the Florida Keys this year.

Hundreds of runners will walk and run over the bridge — the gateway to the Florida Keys — overlooking the Key Largo Bay. Now in its 11th year, the run will feature a half marathon and 5K run/walk that will end at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo.

Organizations benefiting from the race include Teen Intervention and Prevention Services of the Florida Keys’ mission to inspire youth towards a path of nonviolence through education and athletics. The nonprofit provides prevention classes and workshops to middle and high school teens in the community.

Another beneficiary from this year’s race is Wesley House Family Services. Founded by the Methodist Church as a settlement program for Key West’s Cuban community, Wesley House promotes and enhances safety, well being and development of children by educating, supporting and meeting the needs of families. With services spanning from Key West to Key Largo, Wesley House offers foster care and child development services to case management and adoption for area children.

This year’s bridge run also supports Key Largo School, Rotary Club of Key Largo and the Rotary Club of Key Largo Sunset.

“This beautiful race is a true community event as runners will come to the finish line at Gilbert’s Resort where they’ll be met by family and friends.

But this event, now in its 11th year, also gives back to the community and its youth,” said Henry Menendez, event organizer and president of HNO Productions. “ A meet-and-greet party with appetizers and drink specials is planned for Friday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Key Largo Conch House, MM 100.2.

Runners can pick up race packets between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at First State Bank in Key Largo, MM 97. Packets also are to be available on the morning of the race beginning at 5 a.m. at the starting line at Gilbert’s Resort access road.

A Saturday evening Pasta Party dinner for runners to “carb up” is set for 6 to 8 p.m. at Doc’s Diner, mile marker 99 bayside. Tickets are $25 per person and are to be available for purchase in advance at keylargobridgerun.com.

LIGHTING DRY BANK A tale of the tallest Keys lighthouse

D

ry Bank was not the first location choice to build the tallest of the iron screw-pile lighthouses marking the Florida Reef. The original building site was a few miles north at Coffins Patch Reef, where, in 1856, work was underway when a late August hurricane stormed through the Florida Straits. Fort Dallas, what would later become Miami, reported heavy winds. Key West reported heavy gales.

On Aug. 29, 1856, the hurricane destroyed the work platform at the Coffins Patch Lighthouse site in the Middle Keys.

Coffins Patch is found about 4 miles off of Key Colony Beach. The project was put on hold until the site could be reassessed. Subsequently, the decision was made to move the lighthouse 9 miles south to Dry Bank.

In 1857 the United States Lighthouse Board issued a statement announcing, “The most important lighthouse structures underway in this district are the Dry Bank lighthouse (near Coffin’s Patches) … and the first class masonry tower at Dry Tortugas.”

Dry Bank Lighthouse was first lit in 1858.

From the tip of the tower to the Atlantic floor, it stood 160 feet tall. It is the tallest of the lights marking the Florida Reef. The focal point of the lighthouse, the distance between the lighthouse’s powerful lens and the Atlantic’s surface, is 142 feet. The light was constructed under the command of George G. Meade, a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Previously, Meade had supervised the Carysfort Reef Lighthouse, off the shore of Key Largo, that flashed its first warning strobe across what has been considered the most dangerous tract of coral in the whole of the Florida Reef in 1852. He was also assigned to the Sand Key Lighthouse rebuild after the 1846 Great Havana Hurricane destroyed the former light and washed away the sandy spit of land where it had stood.

For Civil War buffs, the name George Meade might have a familiar ring to it.

During the war, the now General George G. Meade served the Union efforts and commanded the Army of the Potomac that helped defeat Robert E. Lee at the second battle of Gettysburg.

Like the lighthouses built at Carysfort

Reef and later at Alligator Reef, the Dry Bank Lighthouse was built atop a screw pile octagonal design mounted on eight massive discs resting on the ocean bottom. The iron beams supporting the structure were pounded into the limestone substrate by a steam-driven hammer to a depth of 10 feet, one inch at a time.

Dry Bank would remain the name of the lighthouse until 1873. It was announced, by order of the Lighthouse Board, Joseph Henry, chairman, “Notice is hereby given that the lighthouse near Sombrero Key, Florida Reefs, will hereafter be known as Sombrero Key Lighthouse instead of Dry Bank Lighthouse.”

In John Lee Williams’ 1837 account of Florida, he described Kay Sombrero as “the easternmost islet on the reef. It is situated 6 or 7 miles N.E. from Bahia Honda, and four miles S.W. from Knight’s Key, the western key of the Vaccas group. It is but a patch of rock, covered with a few mangroves and pieces of wreck.”

On Oct. 17, 1910, the double-masted French steamer S.S. Louisiana was driven onto the reef by hurricane-force winds and heavy waves. While all 600 passengers and crew were rescued by the U.S. Revenue cutter Forward, salvaging the steamer proved to be a difficult and lengthy process. Merritt and Chapman Derrick Wrecking Company eventually freed the vessel at some cost to the reef. Dynamite was used to free the ship.

After repeated blasting, salvagers were able to clear enough chunks of coral away to create a narrow channel that enabled the ship to escape. The job took until February 1911 to complete.

Tending the light out at the reef was isolated work with few distractions. In 1926, then-Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover advocated for lighthouses to be equipped with radios. “I don’t know of any other class of shut-ins who are more entitled to such aid. They are not paid any too well and the radio sets which they can hardly afford are in many cases their only means of keeping in touch with the world.” By 1929, Sombrero Key Lighthouse had its own radio.

Like every lighthouse marking the reef, Sombrero Key had been staffed by a civilian crew until 1939, when all United States lighthouses were integrated into the U.S. Coast Guard under the Presidential Reorganization Act. Sombrero Key remained a manned station until its automation in 1963.

ost of us, depending upon how organized we are (ahem), have a certain morning routine before work. A shower, a brushing of the teeth, perhaps coffee and breakfast (or not), then a jump into a car for the commute. Some of us accomplish this at a frenzied pace (cough), while others are more leisurely. Meditative.

Passionate birder Michelle Perez, founder of the Facebook page Florida Keys Birding, Reptiles, Wildlife, and Plants, can possibly be counted among the latter, calmer group. After all, she takes time to walk around her yard to watch birds every morning before going to her job as a nurse for a managed care company. Then she types up a post with her findings, like so: “Morning Birdcast November 8th … Many migrating birds seen this morning, still lots of Turkey vultures, swainsons, and short tailed hawks soaring in this windy day.”

Since starting the page three years ago, Perez has over 600 followers and counting, many posting excited comments about a bird seen that day. For many, birdwatching is an obsession.

Perez sees her hobby as a way to start her day in a positive way and indulge her interest in all things nature.

“I like it because you're getting outdoors, you’re walking, observing, learning, and it is relaxing for me,” she explained.

And it all started with a Christmas present when she still lived in Kissimmee.

“I would go on walks and bike rides and look at birds, but I didn’t know much about different kinds. In 2014, I asked my husband to get me a feeder for Christmas. I wanted to see birds in my yard. The first one was a cardinal. Then I started getting weird stuff. One was a male painted bunting. I thought it was an escaped pet or a parrot, because it

was so colorful. So I started Googling, and I figured out what it was.”

When Perez moved to Key Largo in 2018, she landscaped her yard to attract more birds. For example, gumbo limbo, fig and Jamaican dogwood trees “are all huge

hits with birds,” she said.

She gradually noticed over the years that certain birds would come into the Keys at the same time. She started documenting their migration, taking photos and posting on her page.

Mark Hedden is Keys Weekly’s wildlife columnist and executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society. He corroborated Perez’s assertion about the enormous variety of birds in the Keys during migration.

“The Keys are a great place to bird for a number of reasons,” he said.

“One is that, twice a year, we have massive numbers of birds migrate through here. And there is so little land that it makes birds easier to find.

Also, because we are at the north end of the Caribbean, we regularly see a number of species that you don't see in the rest of the country.”

Perez hopes that more people will join her group and add their bird sightings, and she said that people can start bird watching just like she did: with a feeder and access to Google to ID the birds.

Hedden added, “The great thing about birding is all you really need is a pair of binoculars and a field guide. Printed field guides are great, but you can also get them as apps on your phone.”

And whether you get up early in the morning to go birding before work or not is entirely up to you.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, has collected and delivered more than 188 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.

This year there are four dropoff locations in the area where individuals, families and community groups can bring their packed shoeboxes during National Collection Week: Nov. 15 through Nov. 22.

Delving into diet, lifespan and fur colors

H

i friends! Reef the fox here with another weekly edition of “Reef’s Report.” I received my first piece of fan mail last week and I am so excited to share it with you and answer all the great questions that were asked.

“Reef, I love your column in the Upper Keys Weekly! I would like to know what foxes eat and how much? Also do you mate for life? What is a typical fox lifespan both in the wild and in captivity?

Why do they call you a red fox if you are not red? I’ve seen your videos and you seem to get the zoomies from time to time just like my dog. Are dogs and foxes related? Do you sleep in a den? How do you handle the heat with all that fur?” Pamela Hi Pamela! So many great questions so I’ll get to answering them. All of the foxes I live with eat a combination of raw meat, fruits and vegetables.

Our mom gives us a diet that would mimic what we might find if we were wild foxes. We eat about 5% of our body weight, so mom portions everything out accordingly. We don’t eat pork or beef though.

It has been documented that red fox species do mate for life in the wild. But since none of the foxes here are able to mate/have babies, we are all just friends for life. As far as my lifespan goes, since I live in an amazing home and get a proper diet and veterinary care, I can live 10-15 years.

In the wild, due to natural predators, disease etc. … foxes have a lifespan of 3-5 years.

Even though I am not red in color, I am a red fox species. Foxes don’t have breeds like dogs do; we are all species specific animals. My fur color wouldn’t show up in the wild because it was man-made on a fur farm through generations of cross-breeding foxes to produce different colors. There are over 70 man-made colors of red foxes now that have come from fur farming.

I do, indeed, get the zoomies.

But my zoomies can clock speeds of

30 mph. As far as foxes and dogs being related, yes, we are. Foxes and dogs are members of the same animal family, canidae, but then the relation stops there. If you’ve seen my photos and videos on social media then you know my “den” is my mom’s bed and in front of the air conditioner. I also like to sleep under mom’s bed, so I guess that is kind of a den. I, and all of the other foxes here, handle the heat just fine. Red foxes are actually native to Florida, so in the wild they have naturally adapted to the heat, and we do the same. We lay low during the hot seasons and are active in the evenings and early mornings, but again, since I am allowed inside the house, I never really get too hot. Now that the weather has cooled off here, we are all very active at all hours of the day.

COLLEGE PRESIDENT SALUTES LOCAL VETERAN CFK GRADUATE IS AN ARMY RANGER WHO THEN EARNED A DOCTORATE

T

his Veterans Day, I encourage all to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that our service members bear for all Americans and for the principles of democracy. Our heroes continue to serve in a variety of ways that benefit our communities. I salute all veterans as well as current servicemen and women. I express my sincerest thanks to them and their families for their dedication and commitment, and for their continued service to protecting our freedom wherever they are deployed.

The Florida Keys and the college have indeed benefitted from the contributions of many veterans over the years. Each one deserves special recognition. Today, I salute one veteran in the CFK family: U.S. Army Sergeant Ray Rhash, who is an alumnus and instructor at the College’s Upper Keys Center in Key Largo.

Rhash, a lifelong Keys resident, enlisted in the Army in 1978, 13 days after his high school graduation. At the tender age of 17, he was driven by a desire for adventure and to serve our country. Soon, he was a member of the Charlie Company 1/75th Ranger Battalion and began the intense Ranger training program. In Jump School, Rhash first learned how to safely hit the ground before progressing to jumping from 250-foot-tall towers and eventually jumping out of moving aircrafts with 80 to 100 pounds of gear. Rhash’s training included day and night jumps in settings ranging from jungle to desert to winter landscapes.

Around the time Rhash began training as a Ranger, top secret plans were being developed to rescue American hostages held captive in Iran. Unbeknownst to Rhash and his fellow Rangers, they were training for Operation Eagle Claw, a newly created joint task force with the mission of rescuing the hostages. For six months, they rehearsed under cover of night to preserve the secrecy of the mission.

In April 1980, Rhash’s unit headed overseas, still unaware of the job ahead.

After several stops, they arrived in Egypt, where their mission was revealed to them. While Mission Eagle Claw was ultimately unsuccessful, the servicemen and women involved were lauded for their heroism. Many special operations procedures developed for the mission are still used today. Rhash earned a Humanitarian Service Medal for his contributions and bravery. He served the remainder of his four-year service in the Infantry at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant E5 with 36 jumps to his credit.

Rhash happily returned home to the Keys in 1985, and shortly thereafter began a career at the Florida Keys Electrical Co-Op on the line construction crew. He worked his way to higher roles, but knew he needed an education to be where he wanted to be in life. So, he enrolled in classes at CFK’s Middle Keys Center and earned an associate’s degree in 2004.

He continued his academic pursuit by earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting and a doctorate in business administration from St. Leo University.

Today, he is the planning, rate, and budget analyst at Florida Keys Electrical Co-Op. His involvement in the community has included serving on the Marathon Chamber of Commerce board, as a Rotarian, and as president of Leadership Monroe County. For the past two years, Rhash has taught the student success skills class to new students in CFK’s Upper Keys Center, an experience he describes as more rewarding than he ever thought possible.

One of the lessons he imparts to his students, which he learned in the military, is the value of discipline. “Nothing comes easy,” advises Rhash. “You have to push your limits mentally and physically, every day, to reach what you want in life.”

Rhash’s discipline helps him make time to teach in the evenings, on top of a full-time career. Outside of the classroom,

espite the death of longtime singer and bassist Dusty Hill in July, ZZ Top followed Hill’s orders that the show must go on.

The band enlisted longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis to fill Hill’s shoes and took the stage Nov. 6 at Key West’s Coffee Butler Amphitheater, beards and all, for a concert presented by Rams Head.

Francis had been clean shaven for decades, but started growing his beard during the pandemic, long before he knew he’d be on stage with the iconic band.

The Key West concert also featured a surprise performance by Kid Rock, who was in town at the time, and performed “Tush” with ZZ Top as a final encore.

he Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2021 winners of the Chamber Business Awards. Nominated from the community by the chamber board, the winners were chosen by votes from chamber members. “These awards represent the best of the best,” said chamber CEO Daniel Samess. The following businesses have set an exemplary standard in Marathon with their unique contributions to our community. Keys Weekly featured four of the eight winners in last week’s issue, with the rest of the award recipients listed below: Community Contribution Award (Large Business): This award is presented to a business that goes above and beyond the call of duty to help their Middle Keys community whenever called upon. 2021’s Large Business award goes to Florida Keys Electric Co-op, taking the win over fellow nominees Centennial Bank and Hawks Cay Resort. “We do our very best to be a valued community partner in all the communities we serve,” said Scott Newberry, FKEC CEO. “On behalf of all the folks here at FKEC, thank you to the Marathon business community for recognizing us.”

Community Contribution Award (Small Business): The chamber elected to recognize both a large and small business for its 2021 Community Contribution Awards. 2021’s Small Business award was won by Brutus Seafood, edging out other nominees Keys Federal Credit Union, Driftwood Pizza & Subs, and Florida Keys Brewing Co. “I just wanted to thank all of the chamber members who voted for Brutus and myself,” said owner Elise Mucha Reid. “I’m very proud to be a member of such

a small community, and I’m very grateful to be able to give back.

I’m glad that my staff shows up and supports me and all the crazy endeavors that I always volunteer us for.”

Chamber Best Friend Award: This award is presented to a person or business that is always there to help the Marathon chamber, putting in time and effort and showing dedication to the chamber’s causes and mission. The Chamber Best Friend for 2021 is Tricia Baker with Marathon Lumber, winning the award over fellow nominees Christina McIntyre from Food for Thought and Sandra Bradshaw. “Thank you, chamber members, for this Best Friend Award,” said Baker. “I try to do what I can to help, and with all the crazy times we’ve had, it’s kind of nice to be recognized.”

Humanitarian Award: The Humanitarian Award is presented to a business that is always striving to help those in need within the Middle Keys community. Presents in Paradise takes home 2021’s Humanitarian Award over nominees Overseas Pub & Grill, Brutus Seafood, and FIRM. “I just want to say thank you to this amazing community,” said founder Sarah Bartus. “Presents in Paradise started in 2003 and we had 14 kids.

This year, we’re expecting over 500, and we couldn’t do it without all the support and all the wonderful people that live here. What an honor.”

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), in partnership with Wildlife Forever, will host the Florida State Fish Art Contest again this year. Students in kindergarten through high school can compete in this free contest for a chance to win state and national honors and prizes. This program inspires creativity while developing the next generation of anglers and conservationists.

Florida winners will be selected by the FWC in four grade categories: kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade; and 10th through 12th grade. State winners will advance to a national competition to be judged for top prizes including Best of Show. The deadline to enter is March 31, 2022.

“We are committed to increasing youth participation in freshwater and saltwater fishing through this effort,” said Eric Sutton, executive director of the FWC. “The State Fish Art program is a unique and creative way to connect to youth anglers and the FWC is proud to be sponsoring the initiative for Florida.”

To enter, students from Florida should submit, at wildlifeforever.org/florida-entryforms, the following: • An original horizontal 9”x12” piece of artwork featuring any fish from the Official Fish List.

• A piece of creative writing, no longer than one page, about the chosen species (required for grades 4-12).
