NUMBER OF THE WEEK
ON THE COVER
According to AAA, Florida gas prices increased a total of 27 cents over the course of two weeks in October. However, prices at the pump finally hit a plateau at around $3.31 per gallon throughout the past 12 days. The price for U.S. crude settled at $83.57 per barrel. That was 19 cents less than the week before, and the first weekly loss in 10 weeks. The price of crude increased a total of 12% in October, rising from $75.88 to a high of $84.65 early last week. The increased cost of crude raises the cost of producing gasoline.

MARATHON HAS SPOKEN Luis Gonzalez and Trevor Wofsey win two open seats on Marathon City Council ALEX RICKERT

W
hen results of early voting came rolling in, Luis Gonzalez had a good feeling about his initial lead. And yet, it was still too early to call. “Elections are trends,” he said as he waited outside the Marathon Elks Lodge with his family, refreshing the election results on their phones every few seconds. When all five precincts added their tallies to the early and absentee numbers, however, the trend would prove true, as Gonzalez and Trevor Wofsey won the two available seats on the Marathon City Council. Out of 1,848 ballots cast, with voters able to choose one or two candidates, Gonzalez finished as the top vote-getter with 1,282 votes (41% of all votes submitted). Wofsey ended the night with 879 votes (28.1%). Jody “Lynny” Del Gaizo received 648 votes (20.7%), while Greg Coldiron finished with 319 votes (10.2%). “It’s very, very simple. I’d like to thank all of the voters for coming out and I’d like to thank the candidates for running a clean race,” said Gonzalez. “To the candidates who weren’t successful, please keep working. Your ideas were good ones.” Gonzalez went on to thank his supporters who aided him in netting such
a high percentage of votes. “Not only today but throughout the campaign, we had a wave of teal and black that just took over Marathon. Thank you to the entire city of Marathon. I love you guys!” Wofsey echoed Gonzalez’s remarks on what appears, by all accounts, to be a clean campaign. “Everyone played nice, and there was no October surprise. It was good, because we all still have to get along and live with each other tomorrow, and we seem to have a good rapport with each other,” said Wofsey. Shortly after the results were finalized, Wofsey joined Gonzalez at his victory celebration, telling the crowd, “I think Marathon got it right this time. A family man and a working man. We’re moving Marathon forward.” Though the result was not what he had hoped for, Coldiron graciously accepted Marathon’s decision. “I thought that my committee did an outstanding, dedicated job and that we ran a very aggressive and professional campaign,” he said. “I was expecting the race to be much closer than it was, but the people voted and made their decision, and I am 100% behind that.” Del Gaizo was similarly thankful, stating, “I didn’t win a seat on the City Council, but I did win in meeting new people, learning about our city, and what it takes to run for City Council. Congratulations to Luis and Trevor. I’m positive that they have the best inten-

tions to move our city forward. You’ll be seeing me again!” The voter turnout, tracked live for the first time on the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections website, settled on a final porportion of 29.37%. Of the 6,293 eligible registered voters in the election, 4,445 chose not to cast ballots. The election also saw a significant number of “bullet” votes, in which only one candidate was selected on a ballot instead of two. With 3,128 votes cast from 1,848 ballots, 568 ballots (30.7%) were cast with only one candidate selected. “I was very pleased with the election. Everything went smoothly, and I was very pleased with our new equipment,” said Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin. Griffin also noted that voter turnout was up ever so slightly from Marathon’s last “off-year” election in 2019, which saw a 29.07% turnout. The newly elected councilmen will take their seats at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

THOSE Honoring veterans WHO in the Keys SERVED
In honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, and the Keys’ deep-rooted relationship with the military, Keys Weekly honors local veterans of all ages, who have served all over the world, from Iraq and Bosnia to Korea, Kosovo, Vietnam and everywhere in between. We thank you for your service and your dedication to our freedom, on Veterans Day and every other day of the year.
JOHN SCHAEFER Age: 59. Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Navy, Navy Reserves and Army Reserves. What rank did you achieve? E5 petty officer 2nd class. Unit you were attached to? USS Independence, an aircraft carrier. It was ’82 to ’85, three Mediterranean cruises, when I was age 19 to 23. What inspired you to join the military? I was working for a friend’s dad, who was a surveyor in Ohio. It was brutally cold. We went by a recruiting billboard and it said, “You can work in paradise,” or something like that. And we signed up. What was the best part of your service? Port calls on the Mediterranean and going through the Suez Canal. On Christmas Day in Israel, we did a tour through Bethlehem. And also the camaraderie: A guy from my hometown in Ohio joined a month after I did. How did serving change you? Coming from a small town in Ohio, I had no grasp on the real world. After you join, you grasp the privileges, how well you got it. And it made me a good worker. I would see what would need to be done and do it, rather than the minimum. I got a really solid work ethic. What do you tell young people who want to serve? I’d encourage it, whichever direction they feel pulled in. You learn a lot no matter which service you’re in. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? We would lose pilots on every cruise. They would crash. One time, the catapult pushed him straight into the water. Another time, on a port call, a guy started drinking and jumped off a building. It was a build-up of stress. Once we went without a port call for 90 days. When they do that, they stop the boat and party. We were jumping off the ship and into the water. And I developed a respect for Mother Nature. We were in the Mediterranean when Grenada happened, and we went through bad storms. The waves were breaking over the flight deck. I got seasick, and I had to lie across a vent (for some air). They called an emergency muster that I didn’t hear, and they thought I went overboard. Favorite military movie? “Top Gun.” Give me “Top Gun” any day. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I’m a mailman. I deliver for Amazon six days a week, 10 hours a day, at least. I’m thinking about retiring in July.
CHARLIE ESTRELLA Age: 59 Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Army What rank did you achieve? Spec 4. Unit you were attached to? 101st Airborne Division, Battalion 327. I was stationed in Kentucky from 1980 to 1984. I didn’t go into live action, but I was rotated into battalion on 24-hour notice. I was deployed to Puerto Rico for jungle training, then Alaska for arctic training. Wow, I hated that, it was cold. What inspired you to join the military? Watching my friends getting into trouble. I’d gotten into a little trouble. I was 17. I had to go to court. The judge said, “You gotta do something with your life. What about the Army? You’ll get a clean slate here.” So I enlisted in the Army at age 18, the day of my birthday. What was the best part of your service? Becoming a man. Once I got to basic training, I rolled into Georgia from Rhode Island on a bus, and I hadn’t eaten for 24 hours, and a sergeant was screaming at you. You were broken down and they start you from the ground up. You can’t be a punk. I became a man. I needed it, big time. Or I’d be in jail, I imagine. How did serving change you? I thought I knew everything about the world. That went in a 180. When I stepped off that bus, it was a lot different. What do you tell young people who want to serve? I almost feel like every able body should go in for two years. Everybody would benefit from that time of discipline. You don’t take anything for granted any more. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? How fast, how high you had to jump from helicopters. That was my duty in the 101st Airborne. We had to fly in helicopters with belay ropes on Blackhawks. On Blackhawks you sit facing out the door on both sides. You jumped or rappelled. It was very intense. I learned to love it. Favorite military movie? “The Dirty Dozen.” What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I work at Marathon City Marina.
8
KENNETH BELL Age: 74 Which branch did you serve in? Marine Corps. What rank did you achieve? E5 Sergeant. Unit you were attached to? VMCJ1, First Marine Air Wing, Vietnam. What inspired you to join the military? I was drafted. A lot of us were gung ho. Half were not. I was gung ho. What was the best part of your service? I traveled all over the world. Vietnam and back. Hawaii, Bangkok, Thailand, China. A little New England boy, and I’d never been anywhere. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? Yeah. I should have stayed in the Marine Corps. They would have made me an officer if they re-upped my contract. There are a lot of benefits to being in the military — health insurance, a real nice pension plan. And it involved an awful lot of people I really liked. What do you tell young people who want to serve? I would say jump on it. It’s a real good career, a good pension. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? I didn’t know what was going on. I was in TET. The TET offensive. They almost got me about six times. Favorite military movie? “Platoon.” What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I’m the financial treasurer of the American Legion Post 154 here in Marathon, as well as its adjutant service officer and judge advocate.
MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 4, 2021
JOHN ALLAN Age: 61 Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Navy. What rank did you achieve? E4 petty officer, 3rd class. Unit you were attached to? I was on the USS Stein, Hull No. FF1065. I was in the Pacific Ocean, mostly out of San Diego. What inspired you to join the military? I was young. 19. I just wanted to get away. I thought we were going to war with Iran back then (1979). What was the best part of your service? I think going places, seeing things. I went to Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Singapore. I sailed across the Indian Ocean, far enough to see Africa. How did serving change you? I developed good habits in me, little stuff like getting up and showing up. What do you tell young people who want to serve? I encourage it. Honestly, there are a lot of benefits you get out of it, like the VA. Parents worry about their children joining, then let them ride a motorcycle. I don’t think they think things through. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? The big thing is: The ocean looks the same wherever you go. Two-thirds of the world is water. Favorite military movie? “The Sand Pebbles” with Steve McQueen and Richard Crenna. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I’m a retired carpenter.
DANIEL PERKINS Age: 59. Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Army. What rank did you achieve? I was in the Army two years, in the armored division. A tank driver. I was also a National Guard tank instructor, a commander for Disabled American Veterans and a service officer for DAV Chapter 122, Marathon. What inspired you to join the military? I had a decision: jail or army. It was the best thing I ever did. Straightened my stuff out. What was the best part of your service? Following in my father’s footsteps. He was in the Korean War and won a Purple Heart and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? Always, the guys who fought: Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq. It really affected my nephew. He has PTSD. He was a great Marine. What do you tell young people who want to serve? Fight for your country. That’s why you have a free country. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? The discipline made me be the person I am today. If I wouldn’t have done that, I would have been a criminal. Favorite military movie? “Pearl Harbor.” A friend of mine was there when it happened. His father was stationed there. He remembers the planes flying over, and he shot them with a toy gun. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I worked for D’Asign Source for 14 years. I spray bugs now for A&B Exterminators.
There are between 6,500 and 7,000 full-time veterans in Monroe County. About 2,000 to 2,500 veterans come down to the Keys during season.
EDWARD JOHN Age: 92 Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Army. What rank did you achieve? PFC. Unit you were attached to? 82nd Airborne in the Korean War. What inspired you to join the military? I volunteered. I was a young kid. My mother’s youngest brother was a Marine. What was the best part of your service? I was a bodyguard for Miss North Carolina (1951), Lu Long Ogburn. And she won third in the Miss America contest. I was surprised. I thought I was going to be digging ditches. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? No. I ain’t going back there. What do you tell young people who want to serve? Listen to your superiors. They’ll carry you through. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? I think about later, when I became a bodyguard in the Presidential Protection Division. I’m a retired federal agent. I was a bodyguard for the Queen of England and three presidents: Nixon, Ford and Carter. Favorite military movie? The “Band of Brothers” HBO series. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I chase my wife around the house. I don’t have any trouble catching her, but I forget what I was chasing her for.

MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 4, 2021
BOBBY WELLSBY Age: 51 Which branch did you serve in? Marine Corps. Once a Marine, always a Marine. What rank did you achieve? Corporal CLP. Combat engineer. I was a grunt with a brain. Unit you were attached to? 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Company Support. What inspired you to join the military? I was inspired by medieval times and the knights. The modern knight is a Marine. People should be able to live without fear. If someone is living with fear, we go and help. Marines are the first in and the last out. What was the best part of your service? When I was doing refugee work and knowing children were being taken care of in humanitarian camps in Northern Iraq. Out of all the stuff I had to do, that’s what broke my heart. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? Brotherhood. Family. Like coming in here (American Legion Post 154), you know you can always get help. It’s a dysfunctional family, but we still love each other. What do you tell young people who want to serve? Remember to honor your country, and your mother and father, whether they are together or not. And honor thyself and family. We are all sinners in God’s eyes. We can all repent with family and friends. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? My first deployment. I joined before my birthday in November, trained in December, then went to the Gulf. It was like, bam, bam, bam. It was a recognition of the real world. Favorite military movie? For inspiration, “Cadence” with Charlie Sheen. For funny, “Top Gun.” What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I’m an ordained minister. And anything anybody needs, I’ll be there for the church, the Legion. At least 75 percent of people in town have my number.
DAVID DOLQUEIST Age: 50 Which branch did you serve in? Marine Corps. What rank did you achieve? Corporal E4. Unit you were attached to? 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines. I was in Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Somalia. What inspired you to join the military? I’m from a family of military going back to World War I. What was the best part of your service? Camaraderie. It’s a family. People you meet in the military are lifelong friends. I’m still in touch with the 3rd battalion. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? No, not really. Though I’m forever a Marine. Once you’re a Marine, you’re always a Marine. And that’s part of Marine Corps history. It makes you stand taller, act prouder. What do you tell young people who want to serve? Do it. My son, Cade, just joined the Marines. He’s joining one week after graduation. Like me, he wants to follow the family. It was his decision. I just guided him. My youngest son, Reed, will follow the same path, I believe. It’s almost like a calling in our family. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? Honestly? We all knew what we were getting into. Favorite military movie? I don’t really watch movies but “Full Metal Jacket.” What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I own an AC and plumbing company (Dolqueist Air Conditioning & Plumbing), and I fish with the kids.
JOHN DICK Age: 74 Which branch did you serve in? U.S. Army. What rank did you achieve? Specialist Fourth Class (SP-4). Unit you were attached to? I was in the 20th Engineer Battalion, attached to the 4th infantry division. Vietnam. What inspired you to join the military? I was drafted. But we came from our Brooklyn neighborhood, and we answered the call. What was the best part of your service? The day I flew out of Vietnam. Is there a part of the service that you think about often? I reflect on combat situations. I’m lucky I made it through. A lot of them didn’t. What do you tell young people who want to serve? It’s a great respect to this country. They should be proud to be Americans, and Americans will be proud they served in the armed forces. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? You get surprised the first time you’re under attack, but it’s not like they didn’t tell us. But it’s a wake-up call. And going around the world is interesting. In Vietnam, it rains for six months, then not for six months. Once, I saw two tigers in one evening in the forest. Favorite military movie? “Patton.” What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I’m the chairman of the school board. That's what I do.
GEORGE JAMES DOWLING Age: 69 Which branch did you serve in? I was a Merchant Marine. What rank did you achieve? I was a captain, and I ran cargo. What inspired you to join? I joined at age 20. I grew up in Rhode Island, and I always liked to be on boats. What was the best part of your service? Traveling all over the world. I liked Thailand. The Mediterranean. Ibiza. Majorca. Jordan. The Middle East. What’s your favorite memory? I turned 21 in Grenada, Spain. I hit every bodega on the street. Two days later, when I sobered up, I was in Tangiers, Morocco, a different continent. What do you tell young people who want to be a Merchant Marine? If you like to travel, go. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I'm retired. I don’t do a damn thing. I used to run a lot of boats, from 1985 to 1994.
RETIRED VA NURSE HAS FOND MEMORIES OF HER PATIENTS Marathon resident HENNY JOHN, age 78, was a VA nurse for over two decades in Milwaukee, from 1976 to 2000. She shares her thoughts of that time: “I loved it. It’s a unique patient. They have such a camaraderie for each other. We had big wards. If someone wanted something to drink, someone would say, ‘Can you give him something to drink?’ In most hospitals, you don’t know each other. The Milwaukee VA hospital specialized in paraplegics, quadriplegics and open heart surgery. Depression and alcoholism were the worst things they had. I felt close to them in age. The Vietnam War, you know. I have so many pleasant memories as a nurse, and I loved all of them.”

MANDY RODRIGUEZ Age: 72 Which branch did you serve in? The most proud branch that there is. The Marines. Hoo-rah. We’re always Marines. We fight to the last. What rank did you achieve? E5 infantry. I was a grunt. And proud of it. Unit you were attached to? 3rd battalion, 5th Marines, and I worked closely with 3rd Force Recon. I joined 1967 to 1969, and I was in Vietnam during the TET Offensive. I got there, and a few months later we had a party. It was not fun. What inspired you to join the military? I thought it was only fair that I served my country in partial payment for opening the doors and allowing my family from Cuba to come to this country. What was the best part of your service? My service is mostly in combat. I got a medical discharge. The best part is the camaraderie. They were brothers. We gave our lives for each other. You know what? There wasn’t a black, a white, a yellow. We were all the same color. How did serving change you? I was a Boston inner city street punk, and it made me into a man. Boy, oh boy, they straightened me out real quick. What do you tell young people who want to serve? Yes. I like other countries that have mandatory two years, because it does change you. But I think serving is the ultimate sacrifice to keep the democracy we have. Biggest surprise after becoming active duty? We were well-trained, and they put us in combat and we relied on our training. Thank goodness for that. Combat is akin to police work. A lot of down time, then chaos in a matter of seconds. You never know how you’re going to act in combat until it happens. It’s perplexing. “They’re actually really trying to kill me, and I’m trying to kill them too.” That was crazy. You rely on training and muscle memory. Favorite military movie? “Full Metal Jacket.” The most real. What do you do now in the Florida Keys? I work (as chief operating officer and co-founder of the Dolphin Research Center) and raise children. I have the most amazing job and the most amazing family there is. I’m the luckiest. We were not treated well when we came back (from Vietnam). We were not used to being baby killers. It hurts, it really hurts. Here’s the silver lining: We learned how to treat our heroes. At the DRC, we got an award for helping Wounded Warriors. Vets stood

FIGHTER SQUADRON VFC-111 IS KEY WEST’S HOME TEAM
THE SOUND AND THE POWER MANDY MILES
mandy@keysweekly.com
W
e hear them more often than we see them, depending on weather and altitude, but their sound is always unmistakable, approaching like a rising wall of power and supersonic speed that, yes, interrupts the occasional phone call, but never fails to impress. Sure, we all look up when we see the fighter jets cutting across the sky, independently or in pairs, their supersonic speed outrunning their sound. And after a few years of residency here, we all draft our own improvised, though perhaps less than accurate, version of what these planes and their pilots are doing in the blue sky above our island chain. But what do we really know about the F-5 Tiger-II fighter jets and their pilots that are a permanent feature in Key West’s backyard at Boca Chica Field and Naval Air Station Key West? “I’ve heard people say the craziest things about what we do here,” said Cmdr. Matt Pearce, public affairs officer for the resident adversary squadron at Naval Air Station Key West. “One person swore we were practicing dropping bombs. I swear that’s not the case. Never. Ever. Ever.” VFC-111 is the home team around here. Except they play the bad guys. As an adversary squadron, the pilots of VFC-111 are the instructors who play the enemy during crucial air-to-air combat training. The squadron became known as the Sun Downers since its establishment in World War II, given its commitment to downing Japanese planes, identified by their giant red sun insignia. But let’s be real, my fellow children of the ’80s. Most of us learned everything we know about “air combat maneuvering — dogfighting,” from the movie “Top Gun.” To put it in terms we can understand, VFC111 are Viper and Jester, seasoned and expert pilots flying different, or dissimilar, aircraft than the aviators they are training. The Keys Weekly recently caught up with Pearce, who gave a tour of the Boca Chica

airfield, the hangar, the “ready room” for preand post-flight briefings, and their classrooms, complete with those miniature models of jets attached to sticks that allow the pilots to twist, turn and invert, mimicking aerial maneuvers in a classroom before they’re in the air. The VFC-111 instructors fly their F-5 Tiger-IIs against F-22s, F/A-18 Super Hornets, F-22 Raptors and other fighter jets from other squadrons that visit NASKW, usually for two weeks at a time, training with VFC-111 and taking advantage of Key West’s flight-friendly weather and conveniently located air space, said Pearce, who owns a home, and is raising his kids, in Key West. I had every intention of conducting a professional interview with Pearce, taking notes and asking intelligent questions while zipping around the airfield at Boca Chica on a golf cart. But then, something happens, and our “Top Gun” movie quotes kick in. As surely as someone of our generation (there’s one in every crowd) will sing the name “Roxanne” in the same shrill voice as the Police song, someone else will make “Top Gun” references when touring a naval air station. “There’s the requisite ‘Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.’” I won’t deny it. I was that guy a few weeks ago. Let’s just say my enthusiasm eclipsed my professional intentions. Thankfully, Pearce was a patient instructor and an enthusiastic tour guide, eager to let the Keys community know who VFC-111 is and what they do in our backyard at Boca Chica. For example, the pilots of VFC-111 this

month have grown mustaches and are donating the money raised to fight prostate cancer. Many of these guys live here. Most are reservists, no longer on active duty. While some have made Key West and the Lower Keys their permanent homes and get involved in the community, others commute from as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah to pursue their passion as fighter and train the next generation of young lions in the fleet, said CDR Derek “Baffle” Ashlock, commanding officer of VFC-111. They just happen to have one of the coolest jobs on the planet. (Go ahead, you know you can’t resist. Start singing Kenny Loggins. “Revvin’ up your engine/ Listen to her howlin’ roar/ Metal under tension/ Beggin’ you to touch and go/ Highway to the danger zone….”) Godspeed, guys, and thank you for your service.

SYLVIA T EARLE & MIREYA MAYOR Renowned explorers on protecting the land and sea
wo pioneering female explorers recently sat down with Keys Weekly to share insights from lives in the field as well as their hope and advice for the Florida Keys. Sylvia Earle, famed oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer in Residence, is better known as “Her Deepness.” The living legend has led hundreds of research expeditions and spent more than 7,000 hours underwater. She was also NOAA’s first female chief scientist. Mireya Mayor, Earle’s terrestrial counterpart, lovingly called “Her Wildness,” is also no stranger to exploration. A primatologist and explorer, she co-discovered the world’s smallest primate: a species of mouse lemur in Madagascar. She served as National Geographic’s first female and first female Hispanic wildlife correspondent. Here’s what they had to say: Keys Weekly: How did you begin exploring? Sylvia Earle: I think everyone starts out exploring as a child — all of us. We want to know everything about everything. ... Often, that curiosity gets discouraged as we grow up. … I do what all kids and scientists do, I just never quite grew up. KW: How do exploration and conservation connect? Do we need both? Mireya Mayor: We need both. ... Exploration leads you to new places, new animals, new discoveries. Conser-
vation is there to protect those places, those animals, those people….Both are crucial to protecting our planet. KW: What are you most proud of being known for? SE: Maybe I’ll get there someday. Maybe it’s the next thing. MM: I’m very proud of the trajectory I've taken into this field. I don't have the typical scientist background, and that's what I embrace. I'm a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader. Then I became known as the “Female Indiana Jones” — “Her Wildness.” I co-discovered the world's smallest primate species. And I’m a mom of six, a title I'm incredibly proud of. KW: Do you have a favorite exploration memory? MM: Trekking over 1,000 miles with the Masai has to be one of the most unbelievable experiences and memories of my life. I learned so much from them. When we go into ancient forests, we see trees; they see a medicine cabinet, a grocery store. KW: You’ve been to Aquarius (an underwater scientific laboratory in Islamorada). Tell us about it. SE: To really get to know individual animals, to realize their personalities and to see their place in the system around them and see how the system around them affects them, you need the gift of time. FIU gives us this within the ocean, with Aquarius. I've saturated at least 10 times. … It’s really a step in the right direction.
KW: What’s the most pressing environmental concern that we have? SE: For the oceans, it’s what we put in (plastics) and take out (marine life). ... If we ... understood the hole in the ecosystem that you created when you consumed (the fish), that it doesn't recover — we might think twice instead of just casually dining on what is marketed as delicious. And maybe it is delicious, but it sure doesn't taste so good when you know the truth. MM: For me, climate, climate, climate. In order to fix the climate, you have to preserve the land and the oceans. You have to stop emissions and encourage carbon recapture. KW: Any advice from your life in the field? SE: Protect nature. Protect the diversity of life all around us, on the land and in the sea. Respect them. View the world through their eyes, if you will, and even through the viewpoint of those who don't have eyes — like corals or mangroves. And do it as if your life depends on it, because it does. MM: Realize how little we really need. I've spent most of my life in some of the poorest countries in the world, with people (who) western society would deem to have little to nothing. And yet, they're not just surviving, they're thriving. ... I learned: We don't have to waste and over-consume, and we can still be happy. The things that really matter in life are not things. KW: What message do you want to share? SE: Think about what we're taking out of our life support system. Think about what we're putting into our life support system, the ocean. And, make your choices: Do you want to be a part of the solution or the problem? MM: The strong message for me is that humans are inextricably a part of the problem that we're facing with the natural world. But, we are just as inextricably connected to the solution. There are solutions. There is hope. And, it’s really not that hard; it doesn't have to be complicated. … It can be little daily things that every person does that contribute to a much healthier planet. ... We all have to work together. KW: What is one step people can take? SE: Start with your backyard. Think about what you do in your little space in your jurisdiction. If you have a lawn, plant wildflowers and native trees. MM: People can remain engaged and help with science and research. Attend university events. Learn what scientists are working on. If local, volunteer. If you can, support conservation plans and efforts. It makes a tremendous difference.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE
Jimmy Morgan sworn in as Monroe County’s newest judge ALEX RICKERT

O
n Oct. 27, Monroe County’s bench gained its newest judge as Jimmy Morgan was sworn in by Judge Mark H. Jones. “I always identified him as an outstanding person, not just as a lawyer but as a human being in terms of his character, his commitment to duty and his diligence,” said Jones. A graduate of the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law, Morgan said he has had “a history of service” from a young age. A former student body president in high school and fraternity president in college, he served more than eight years with the United States Marine Corps as a prosecutor upon graduation from law school. “When I graduated from law school, I had always been in awe of those who had served our country,” said Morgan. “I thought, ‘Maybe I should stop just admiring these guys and do it myself.’” Morgan credits his days in the Marines, and mentorship from senior officers, as experiences that helped shape him and provide a genuine sense of the nature of justice. He enjoyed learning the prosecution function as he was tasked with special victims cases. “A lot of those victims were the voiceless,” said Morgan. “You’re able to be the voice for them and find some measure of accountability.” After resuming civilian life, Morgan took his first opportunity to head to Key West, where he joined the public defender’s office. “I thought, if I’m going to learn the defense function, it would be interesting to serve those who truly can’t afford legal representation, people who probably need the protections the most,” he said. Even with a prosecution background, Morgan said, he came to love defense work as well. “It was a commitment to service, but I also had great peer mentors who were closer to my age. When you spend time in both the prosecution and the defense function, you get an idea of what it’s all about.” It was in Key West that Morgan had the opportunity to practice in front of Jones, who served as chief judge at the time. “Being a judge

has always been a dream of mine, and Judge Jones used to always say, ‘Each and every case rises and falls on its own merits,’” said Morgan. “It’s not one size fits all; each case has its own factual scenario and different people. You have to look at all the factors, you just have to. It always felt like Judge Jones arrived at a true sense of justice.” After gaining experience on both sides of the courtroom, Morgan said he found himself anticipating and predicting the outcomes of cases, whether or not they were in his favor. It was at this point that he believed he was ready for the next step. “There comes a point when you’re looking left and looking right and you say, ‘okay, I kind of get it,’” said Morgan. “You have to put yourself in the best position possible to move on to the next phase. I feel like I did that by investing time and energy and effort in learning one skill at a time.” By his own estimation, years of experience in both prosecution and defense, coupled with Marine Corps training that allowed him to make decisions under duress while in active duty, prepared him for the challenges of presiding over cases. “In the Marine Corps, lawyers are line officers, and they can take command of marines and go into combat. I was a decision maker,” he said. When appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, Morgan was thrilled to accept the new position. “It was a true honor to receive the governor’s appointment,” he said. “It’s great to be sitting on the bench alongside the judges who serve Monroe County. There are some great people and great lawyers here who’ve committed themselves for decades.”

MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 4, 2021
SEGREGATION REFERENCE SPARKS MHS INVESTIGATION Monroe County School District responds to racially charged graffiti ALEX RICKERT alex@keysweekly.com
A
racially charged message left on a Marathon High School water fountain has prompted an investigation and discipline from Monroe County School District administrators. As reported to Keys Weekly, a Marathon High School football player labeled locker room water fountains to designate separate fountains for “white” and “colored” students, a reference to the days of racial segregation. Upon discovery, the incident was brought to the high school administration, and an investigation was launched. When the incident was first reported, questions of whether the action qualified as a hate crime arose. The Florida Department of Education defines a hate crime as “an act, or attempted act, to cause physical injury, emotional suffering or property damage through intimidation, harassment, racial/ ethnic slurs and bigoted epithets, vandalism, force or the threat of force, motivated all or in part by hostility to, among other factors, the victim’s real or perceived race or color. ... Creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment. The motivation behind the act is the key element in determining whether an incident is hate-related.” The DOE website lists, among other examples, “student spray paints anti-gay slogans on bathroom walls” as a relevant example. According to the MHS student handbook, a hate crime is listed as a Level 4 (out of 5) Dangerous or Violent Behavior, carrying possible disciplinary consequences of, among others, restorative practices as well as suspension or expulsion. However, Amber Acevedo, Monroe County School District’s coordinator of community relations, confirmed that, “in talking to all parties involved, with all of the information they gathered, (investigators) determined the action did not meet the threshold of a hate crime.” Acevedo cited two specific factors that, among others, played
into the evaluation: the act did not target a specific named individual, and investigators felt the responsible student’s motivation was not consistent with a hate-related offense. In a statement shared with Keys Weekly, Monroe County School District Superintendent Theresa Axford wrote, “The incident at Marathon High School was very serious and after investigation, the student received an appropriate serious consequence. The district policy is to do a thorough investigation of such occurrences and determine intent on the part of the students involved. Once that is determined, along with a consequence, sensitivity counseling is provided so that students understand that words and actions matter and that phrases that harm another’s selfesteem or make them feel insulted or demeaned are not acceptable.” Though the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits school officials from discussing specific details of the investigation and discipline for the student responsible, Acevedo said that, in her estimation, “the disciplinary action was appropriate for the results of the investigation.” A few MHS students, who declined to be identified for fear of retaliation, indicated that while the incident was unusual, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. “I’ve heard words like that thrown around a lot,” said one student. Others indicated that while they knew the action was unacceptable, some students may have perceived it as a joke. While the incident raised concerns that similar language or treatment of racial divides is a common occurrence at MHS, administrators insisted the case was an isolated incident, rather than the norm. “I don’t think it’s prevalent or habitual,” said Acevedo, a former Key West High School principal and MCSD educator for 36 years. “In talking to (Marathon High School principal Wendy McPherson), this is not something that is a regular occurrence. It is out of the ordinary. I do not recall any major incidents like this, and in my current position, nothing similar has occurred.”
ONE-HIT WONDERS Getting that second radio hit is harder than it seems…
G
etting a song on the radio and into the Top 40 is not an easy thing. Millions of bands and musicians have recorded likely hundreds of millions of songs, but only a comparative few get to the charts. And just because a band got there once is no guarantee that they can get there again. Modern recorded music has many of these one-hit wonders, and we’re going to take a look at a few of the more notable. 1. Vanilla Ice, “Ice Ice Baby.” Robert Matthew Van Winkle (Ice’s real name) found a winning formula by sampling part of Queen and Bowie’s “Under Pressure.” This was the first rap song to reach number one on the charts. Seems like that would be an easy follow up, right? Sample another groove and keep churning out the hits. Except … it didn’t happen that way. Ice could never figure out how to get back to the Top 40 — but he did go on to real estate and reality TV. He worked that hit for all it was worth. 2. A-Ha, “Take On Me.” This song had everything going for it — a great synth-pop groove, a band with a superphotogenic lead singer, and one of the most amazing music videos ever. Why this band couldn’t repeat the magic might say a lot about their other material. Sadly, we’ll never know. 3. Marc Cohn, “Walking In Memphis.” Marc is a gifted singer-songwriter who has written a lot of really good songs. Sadly, only one became a huge hit. Still, he has survived and thrived as an artist for all these years. Just goes to show that a musician doesn’t need a radio hit to make a living … but it sure helps. 4. Chumbawamba, “Tubthumping.” This song was a major earworm in the late 1990s, heard literally everywhere all the time. The lyrics are disjointed and the song makes not one lick of sense (unless it’s that everyone should get hammered to the point of falling down), and no one quite knows why it’s titled “Tubthumping.” But people will still sing along when they hear that chorus: “I get knocked down …” Chumbawamba, sadly, did not get back up again. 5. The Knack, “My Sharona.” This is a truly annoying song that leaves no doubt as to why there wasn’t a followup hit. It’s right up there in the annoying department with… 6. Right Said Fred, “I’m Too Sexy.” Or …
7. Men Without Hats, “The Safety Dance.” 8. ? and the Mysterians, “96 Tears.” Give a few guys a Farfisa organ and a garage (actually, their manager’s JOHN living room), and BARTUS you just might end up with a number is a City of Maraone hit like these thon councilguys. man. He also is 9. Norman a musician who performs around Greenbaum, “Spirit town. For more In The Sky.” Norsee johnbartus. man saw Porter com Wagoner play a gospel song on TV and thought to himself, “I can do that.” Having a friend in Jesus has kept Mr. Greenbaum in the green for more than a half-century, and his gospel song was a bigger hit than any of Porter’s. 10. Sir Mix-A-Lot, “Baby’s Got Back.” I just can’t figure out why there was never a follow-up to this … but check out Richard Cheese’s version of this song — heck, check out Richard Cheese’s version of any song. Trust me on this. 11. Queesnryche, “Silent Lucidity.” This is another band with a large following and killer songs that only saw one of them crack the charts. Check out the live version of this song on YouTube recorded at the MTV Video Music Awards from that year. 12. Tommy Tutone, “867-5309/ Jenny.” Pity the poor people who actually had this phone number while this song was on the charts. 13. Benny Mardones, “Into The Night.” While there was no follow up hit to this song about an adult male in an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year old girl, this godawful song hit the Top 40 twice, in 1980 and 1989. 14. Bertie Higgins, “Key Largo.” Close to home, but Islamorada through Key West were left out of any sequels or follow ups. These are but a few of the hundreds of musicians, bands, and acts that made the Top 40 … once. As unflattering as that may sound, each of these acts had legitimate radio hits — and that’s something no one can ever take away. - Catch John Wednesdays at the Key Colony Inn, Thursday afternoon at Durty Harry’s for the Tiki Man Radio Songwriters’ Showcase, Thursday night at Sparky’s Landing and Friday on Facebook Live. www.johnbartus.com

MARATHON WEEKLY / NOVEMBER 4, 2021 A gray-tailed tattler seen in Tavernier last week. MARIAH HRYNIEWICH/ Contributed
ON TATTLERS AND KARMIC STANCES
I
’ve done stupider things, but driving north on U.S. 1 on Fantasy Fest Friday to chase a bird, when I knew I was just going to have to come back down in all that traffic, was at least in my top 50 – for the third decade of the new millennium, anyway. MARK It was worrisome how thick the traffic was just HEDDEN on upper Sugarloaf before noon, and I knew it would only get worse. ... is a photographer, writer, and For a while, with the cancellations of the parades, semi-professional marches and bike rides, it seemed like Fantasy Fest birdwatcher. He 2021 would be recorded in history with an asterisk has lived in Key next to it. But I was downtown the night before, takWest for more than 25 years and ing pictures, and it was full-on crazy, as crowded as I may no longer had ever seen, with people improvising whatever fun be employable in they could. You had to wonder how many more folks the real world. He were driving down from Miami to improvise even is also executive more fun. director of the Isak Dinesen once advised aspiring novelists to Florida Keys Audubon Society. write every day, without hope and without despair. I’ve taken it on as kind of a mantra for all sorts of nonliterary activities – go out and do the thing, or at least try to, but don’t get too emotionally caught up in it. It seemed an especially fine maxim when facing hours of bumper-to-bumper purgatory. Still, the bird, it tasked me. The bird had been seen at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier. When first reported, it was listed as a wandering tattler, a shorebird with one of my favorite names because it seemed the entire ornithological community had ganged up to label the species a peripatetic blabbermouth, a homeless narc. The “tattler” part came from the fact that the species tends to call a lot, though opinions vary as to whether it’s tattling to hunters where all the birds are, or tattling to all the other birds that there are hunters around. The “wandering” part comes from the fact that they do like to roam, though mostly on the West Coast, and never as far as Florida. While it was a great sighting for the Keys, I’d seen a bunch of them in Oregon and California, and it wasn’t enough to overcome my innate anti-chasing inertia. But then the internet bird ID sleuths got on the case, and started analyzing leg colors, tail feathers and supercilia. They decided it was not, in fact, a wandering tattler, but rather the exponentially more rare gray-tailed tattler, a species that breeds in Siberia, winters in Australia, and occasionally shows up in Alaska. According to eBird, there had been only two other sightings of the species in the lower 48 states – one that hung around Nantucket for three days in 2012, and one that flew over an uninhabited rocky island off the coast of Maine in 2017, and was seen and photographed by one guy, who just happened to be out there doing research. The Tavernier bird had been seen steadily all week – people had been putting up great photos – but a small front had come through early Friday morning, which was my first chance to go see it, and bad weather will sometimes chase a rare bird off, so I waited to see if it was reported later in the morning. When it was, I texted my pilot friend Craig to see if he would fly me up, and he pointed out that Tavernier didn’t have an airport. When I suggested he land on the highway, he texted back a lot of mealy-mouthed stuff about safety, legality, fines and getting his license revoked, then suggested I make friends with a helicopter pilot.
So I got in the car. Two-and-a-half-hours and 10 chicken McNuggets later, I was at Harry Harris Park. There was a baker’s half-dozen other birders standing around, spread out along the gulfside shoreline, which wasn’t a good sign. If the gray-tailed tattler was apparent, everyone would have been bunched up together, looking at the bird. But one of the guys there said they’d seen the bird about 45 minutes before, and it seemed to have a pattern. It worked its way down the shoreline, disappeared farther down out of sight for a while, then came back and started all over again, kind of like a typewriter working itself across the page. I set up on a rock and began my vigil in a small cove with a wrecked sailboat with “Ship of Fools” painted on the transom. There was quite a bit to see. Boats were coming in and out of the boat ramp. A Cooper’s hawk shot up and into the top of a buttonwood and gave me the stink eye. Ruddy turnstones disappeared in and out of the rocks. An influencer having her moment walked out onto the pier in a long, flowing dress as two people followed her around with cameras. Osprey made their complaints. A great white heron slow-stepped through the shallows. Occasionally I would get up from my rock and walk down to the end of the park and back, stopping to talk to the other birders, asking if they’d had any luck, but knowing by their dispositions before we even spoke, that they had not. After three hours I realized it was time to head back, and I was fighting off the feeling that karma had gone all Lucy Van Pelt on me again, making me commit to actually wanting something, before pulling away the football of me actually getting it. But that’s a bad way to think. I wasn’t going to have a chance to drive up again for at least another week, but it was possible the bird could be there. It was possible the bird would stay all winter. Weird stuff happens in the Keys. It’s why we live here. Got a bird question you’re I got into the car and drove dying to ask, or even just back to the highway, merging mildly curious about? with the line of other cars, withEmail ‘Ask the Bird Geek’ at out hope and without despair. mark@markhedden.com. And honestly, the traffic wasn’t all that bad.

ancy Heise, a full-time Marathon resident since 2014, is continuing on her artistic journey, recently winning another jewelry art challenge, the Alliance for Metal Clay Arts Worldwide challenge. “It was such an incredible honor to be recognized by three world renowned international jewelry artisans, all past winners of the Saul Bell Design Award,” said Heise. Heise’s art medium is precious metal clay, which originated in Japan in the 1990s. It’s a combination of small particles of metal mixed with an organic binder and water. The pieces are carved and filed and then fired in a kiln. Nancy’s winning pieces are wearable art jewelry composed of 99.9% fine silver with 22 or 24K gold overlay accents. In the past year working from home in her Stirrup Key water view studio, Heise has turned this from a part-time expensive hobby to a full-time passion creating pendants and earrings. “I spend several days on a piece striving for perfection and paying attention to fine detail,” said Heise, “constantly challenging myself with each new creation.” Her pieces are posted to her Facebook page and can be found by searching for: https://www.facebook.com/finequalityhandmadejewelry — Contributed

nternationally renowned artist Wyland is known for his stunning paintings, sculptures and other works of art that celebrate marine life. Recently, he visited Dolphin Research Center (DRC) to collaborate with marine life — some of the nonprofit organization’s dolphin family members. Wyland begins the process by having the dolphin artist “paint” first. He then studies their splashes of paint and is inspired to continue, bringing the piece to full life. Wyland shows his collaborators their canvases, invites them to add more, and then finishes off the art before signing both of their names. Also an avid conservationist, the artist has been a friend and supporter of DRC for upwards of 40 years. The unique paintings created during Wyland’s visit were offered via auction to support the DRC marine mammal family care and home as well as their research, education, conservation, and manatee rescue efforts. — Contributed

COUNTY LOSES FIRE STAFF TO BROWARD COUNTY NEW FIRE CHIEF: KEEPING EMPLOYEES IS ‘PRIMARY GOAL’
New Monroe County Fire Chief Steven Hudson hopes that programs like Hot Shots, meant to groom staff who already live in the Florida Keys, will help with the county’s fire staff turnover rate. Here, the fourth Hot Shots class is seen beginning a new program on Sept. 1. MARY MOELLER/Monroe County Fire Rescue
CHARLOTTE TWINE

M
onroe County Fire Chief Steven Hudson confirmed to Keys Weekly that his department has lost between 10 and 12 staff members within the last two to three months, all to the same fire department in Broward County. The top reason for the mass exodus was the generous compensation package that was offered. “We continue to try not to give up,” said Hudson about the recent high turnover. “That is not in my nature.” He acknowledged that many fire rescue staff have difficulty dealing with Monroe County’s high cost of living and housing, particularly if they have a family. Hudson said, “We keep a keen eye on our turnover. We put our blood, sweat and tears in our employees. Our primary goal is our employees, our most important resource.” As the county’s new fire chief, sworn in on May 19, Hudson has taken action to address the problem. He pointed out that on Sept. 15, county commissioners voted to approve a new compensation package, which had been negotiated with the union representing fire rescue staff, giving them a 7.86% raise. “This compensation package makes us more competitive than the previous five years,” he explained. “Our commissioners have stepped up to the plate to reward and retain our employees.” More good news: the FEMA SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response) grant will be adding 24 firefighters to the department starting Feb. 28, 2022,
with four staffers going to each fire house in the county. And Hudson is hoping the county’s homegrown training program, now starting its fourth class, will continue to have a positive impact. “We developed the Hot Shots program to cultivate young men and women who are already here with housing, perhaps second-generation. And it has helped.” The program graduates about 20 to 25 students per class, though the students have to continue to get paramedic certification before they can be hired. “We’re hoping that has a positive impact as life goes forward,” he said. Indeed, on Oct. 20, Monroe County Fire Rescue swore in six new firefighter/EMT members who are all Hot Shot program graduates. The Broward County salary was challenging to compete with, said Hudson. Broward was opening a new fire house called Coconut Creek, staffing it from the ground up with 60 to 80 personnel. The Monroe County fire rescue staff, most of whom were stationed below the Seven Mile Bridge, were offered compensation equal to a six-year-level employee, even to staffers who were in their first year. Hudson said he understood why his staff were attracted to the high salary. “God bless them. They have children and life has to have a balance.” However, he is keeping a positive attitude and hoping that the combination of the almost 8 percent salary bump, the Hot Shots program and the FEMA staff members “is a winning recipe. I’m really optimistic this will retain all our employees.”

These hard-working men and women are ambassadors, social directors, travel advisors and unlicensed — but often effective — therapists. To celebrate our unique culinary culture, Keys Weekly brings you this bi-weekly feature
to highlight the food, libations and local personalities that define our “must-try” destinations across the Florida Keys. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a fifth-generation local, your options are endless. Indulge in something new or revisit a familiar favorite. Parked right next to the bar, customers can buy a beer on tap then mosey a few steps for fresh Mexican food to pair with their drink. “The nachos are bomb,” said Cheryl McBay, co-owner of FKBC. She’s referring to the Loaded Nachos. Tacos Jalisco co-owner Taimary “Tiny” Ruiz said, “All ingredients are handmade. We reduce the queso from a block to cream. All produce is from local stands, and the corn tortillas are fried here. And every chip has everything on it. You want sloppy, messy, make-you-get-inthere nachos.”

TRUE THAT
TRAVELING, ROMANCE AND A FUGITIVE FAMILY: BEST SELLERS FOR NONFICTION NOVEMBER.
A YEAR OFF By Alexandra Brown & David Brown When Alexandra and David began dating it was immediately clear they had a lot in common. Both in their early 30s, immersed in thriving careers and spending long weekends with friends and family. The idea of quitting the rat race and taking time off to travel the world went from a game of bucket list bingo to an actual plotting map taped to the wall. The young couple found themselves negotiating one destination for another and wondering if this fantasy could actually become reality. With careful planning and heaps of imagination, Alexandra and David prepared to circumnavigate the globe. In this entertaining and engaging account, they share how they tackled each objective from practical advice to stay on budget to learning how to pace yourself after arriving in a new city, which can be both exhilarating and frustrating. Narrated in essays with beautiful photos, their passion leaps off the pages as they lovingly share their experiences in this delightful memoir. My valuable takeaway: “vacation” and “traveling” are two different things. It is probably smart to know before you go!
YOUR BLUE IS NOT MY BLUE By Aspen Matis Aspen met Justin on an adventurous trek of the Pacific Crest Trail, traveling from Mexico to Canada. Swept off her feet, Aspen was thrilled to share her life with this handsome, mysterious man 10 years her senior who saved her in the woods. Quickly accepted by his family, the newlyweds explore the hills of Justin’s youth and the nonconformist beatnik scene of Northern California. Young and in love, Aspen doesn’t question their finances or future plans. She is living in the moment, enjoying newfound adult freedom and letting the days arrange themselves with Justin leading the way. The couple soon ventures to NYC so Aspen can return to college and focus on her writing career. Slowly, their wandering thru-hiker existence is filled with responsibilities and exorbitant monthly rent to pay. As Aspen’s world begins to expand, Justin’s light slowly fades. A few years later, one dark November morning, Justin is off to attend a close friend’s funeral — and never returns. Aspen is left to pick up the shattered pieces of her young life. This descriptive memoir is heartbreaking, brave and beautiful.
NOWHERE GIRL By Cheryl Diamond Harbhajan, meaning “song of God” in Sanskrit, was 4 years old when it became clear that her family was uncommonly different. Repeatedly changing identities, continents and even religions, their only consistency was their family unit. Harbhajan idolized handsome older brother Frank, tolerated her angry sister Chiara and was completely devoted to her parents — intelligent, free spirits who simply floated around the world “appearing” to live a spiritual existence. Little did she know that they would spend the next two decades on the run because in actuality her charismatic father was a wanted criminal and her beautiful mother was desperate to escape her complicated past. With little formal schooling, it is amazing how quickly Harbhajan and her siblings learned random subjects while she and Frank excelled at a variety of athletics her parents obsessively required. As Harbhajan morphed into Crystal and Cheryl she began to analyze her father’s increasingly unhealthy temper and abusive manipulations. Cheryl finally reached her limits when her health declined and she miraculously found the strength to reinvent herself once again. This fast paced, well written narrative is hard to put down.
