That was the hotel occupancy rate in Key West for Oct. 29, the Friday of Fantasy Fest.

Throughout the festival week, hotel occupancy ranged from 54% to 75% from Oct. 27-31. Guesthouses and B&Bs were 97% full on Oct. 29 and 94% full on Saturday, Oct. 30, according to figures from the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

T

here was good news and bad news on tap for the Key West city commission meeting, which was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday evening, and therefore took place after presstime.

But the agenda included several updates from City Manager Patti McLauchlin: the selection of a firm to develop housing on the last 3.2 acres of Truman Waterfront; the latest on the city’s promising sidewalk cafe program, renovations to the homeless shelter on College Road and the ribbon cuttings at the new Truman Waterfront soccer field and the new health clinic in Bahama Village.

Many in town also were curious to hear the latest on the continuing cruise ship debate. Last we heard, some city commissioners were urging all parties to enter formal mediation while also instructing the city

attorney to continue seeking outside counsel to help draft, and defend in court, the voter-approved cruise ship size limits.

A recent meeting with officials from the new Virgin Voyages cruise line reportedly ended abruptly when Mayor Teri Johnston learned the size of the cruise line’s new ship and said it would not be permitted to call on Key West.

In other city commission news, Ed Swift was slated to give a presentation about Historic Tours of America, while the city attorney was expected to present a report on the implications of new census-derived voting boundaries.

Phyllis Jackson, founder of Grieving Families of Youth Violence was to give a presentation about her group’s effort to remember local lives lost to violence and efforts to prevent it.

Also, Commissioner Clayton Lopez wants to ask the state to protect the Australian pine trees at

Fort Zachary Taylor. The species has been deemed an invasive exotic in the rest of Florida, but has enjoyed some protections that kept them at the state park for the past 15 years or so.

Also, Commissioner Sam Kaufman sponsored a resolution urging the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to fund and expedite an anchorage study of Key West nearshore waters in light of new, proposed rules for liveaboard boaters.

COUNTY LOSES FIRE STAFF TO BROWARD COUNTY NEW FIRE CHIEF: KEEPING EMPLOYEES IS ‘PRIMARY GOAL’

onroe County Fire Chief Steven Hudson confirmed to Keys Weekly that his department has lost between 10 and 12 staff members within the last two to three months, all to the same fire department in Broward County. The top reason for the mass exodus was the generous compensation package that was offered.

“We continue to try not to give up,” said Hudson about the recent high turnover. “That is not in my nature.”

He acknowledged that many fire rescue staff have difficulty dealing with Monroe County’s high cost of living and housing, particularly if they have a family.

Hudson said, “We keep a keen eye on our turnover. We put our blood, sweat and tears in our employees. Our primary goal is our employees, our most important resource.”

As the county’s new fire chief, sworn in on May 19, Hudson has taken action to address the problem. He pointed out that on Sept.

15, county commissioners voted to approve a new compensation package, which had been negotiated with the union representing fire rescue staff, giving them a 7.86% raise.

“This compensation package makes us more competitive than the previous five years,” he explained. “Our commissioners have stepped up to the plate to reward and retain our employees.”

More good news: the FEMA SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response) grant will be adding 24 firefighters to the department starting Feb. 28, 2022,

with four staffers going to each fire house in the county.

And Hudson is hoping the county’s homegrown training program, now starting its fourth class, will continue to have a positive impact.

“We developed the Hot Shots program to cultivate young men and women who are already here with housing, perhaps second-generation. And it has helped.”

The program graduates about 20 to 25 students per class, though the students have to continue to get paramedic certification before they can be hired.

“We’re hoping that has a positive impact as life goes forward,” he said.

Indeed, on Oct. 20, Monroe County Fire Rescue swore in six new firefighter/EMT members who are all Hot Shot program graduates.

The Broward County salary was challenging to compete with, said Hudson. Broward was opening a new fire house called Coconut Creek, staffing it from the ground up with 60 to 80 personnel. The Monroe County fire rescue staff, most of whom were stationed below the Seven Mile Bridge, were offered compensation equal to a six-year-level employee, even to staffers who were in their first year.

Hudson said he understood why his staff were attracted to the high salary. “God bless them. They have children and life has to have a balance.”

However, he is keeping a positive attitude and hoping that the combination of the almost 8 percent salary bump, the Hot Shots program and the FEMA staff members “is a winning recipe. I’m really optimistic this will retain all our employees.”

ey West officials have identified the two people killed around 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 on North Roosevelt Boulevard in front of The Gates and 24 North hotels.

While Fantasy Fest was in full swing downtown, the driver of a silver SUV, Jeffrey Allen Schnierle, 48, of Pompano Beach struck the driver of a scooter, Kira Lynn Saner, 39, who had a Stock Island address.

Key West Police reported that Saner suffered substantial injuries and Key West fire department personnel performed CPR, but she was pronounced dead at Lower Keys Medical Center. She reportedly was leaving work at the nearby hotel and pulling onto the boulevard when Schnierle pulled into the hotel, where he was reportedly staying, and struck the scooter.

“The driver of the silver SUV was instructed to pull into the parking lot of the nearby Gates Hotel,” said Alyson Crean, spokeswoman for the Key West Police Department. “After pulling into the parking lot, the driver retrieved a handgun and shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead on scene by the fire department.”

Key West Police traffic homicide investigator Randall Hartle and Detective Tiffini Peters responded to the scene. The investigations continue. The full reports from the incidents have not been finalized or released, and could take weeks, pending test results and other investigative tasks, Crean said.

The Key West Rotary Club is raising money to provide 276 Florida Keys families with a Thanksgiving dinner.

or many, Thanksgiving serves up memories of huge meals and tables laden with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberries.

But those memories and those meals aren’t a reality for families that struggle to put food on the table on a normal day, much less a holiday meal.

The Key West Rotary Club is hoping to solve that food shortage and give nearly 300 local families a reason to be thankful this holiday season.

The noon Rotary received from the Monroe County School District a list of 276 requests for Thanksgiving baskets for local families, including 13 homeless families.

The club is in the process of raising money — a total of $8,280 — to buy each family a $30 gift card from Publix.

“They can use that to buy a turkey and other items, and then the schools will collect the canned goods for the families,” said Christie Martin, who’s heading up the initiative for the Rotary Club. “We’re hoping to have everything to the schools by Nov. 15 to give families plenty of time to shop for their meals.”

NEW DOG PARK OPENS AT TRUMAN WATERFRONT

ey West’s new dog park is a hit with people and their pets. The new park, located at the Truman Waterfront Park between the new Shine Building and the Navy gates, is now open. The park features a playground and training area with ramps and jumps and tubes. There are several shaded benches for dog owners, and more trees will be planted shortly.

“I look forward to seeing our community and their dogs out enjoying this park,” said City Manager Patti McLauchlin.

The dog park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

SEGREGATION REFERENCE SPARKS MHS INVESTIGATION

A

racially charged message left on a Marathon High School water fountain has prompted an investigation and discipline from Monroe County School District administrators.

As reported to Keys Weekly, a Marathon High School football player labeled locker room water fountains to designate separate fountains for “white” and “colored” students, a reference to the days of racial segregation. Upon discovery, the incident was brought to the high school administration, and an investigation was launched.

When the incident was first reported, questions of whether the action qualified as a hate crime arose. The Florida Department of Education defines a hate crime as “an act, or attempted act, to cause physical injury, emotional suffering or property damage through intimidation, harassment, racial/ ethnic slurs and bigoted epithets, vandalism, force or the threat of force, motivated all or in part by hostility to, among other factors, the victim’s real or perceived race or color. ... Creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive educational environment. The motivation behind the act is the key element in determining whether an incident is hate-related.”

The DOE website lists, among other examples, “student spray paints anti-gay slogans on bathroom walls” as a relevant example.

According to the MHS student handbook, a hate crime is listed as a Level 4 (out of 5) Dangerous or Violent Behavior, carrying possible disciplinary consequences of, among others, restorative practices as well as suspension or expulsion.

However, Amber Acevedo, Monroe County School District’s coordinator of community relations, confirmed that, “in talking to all parties involved, with all of the information they gathered, (investigators) determined the action did not meet the threshold of a hate crime.”

Acevedo cited two specific factors that, among others, played into the evaluation: the act did not

target a specific named individual, and investigators felt the responsible student’s motivation was not consistent with a hate-related offense.

In a statement shared with Keys Weekly, Monroe County School District Superintendent Theresa Axford wrote, “The incident at Marathon High School was very serious and after investigation, the student received an appropriate serious consequence. The district policy is to do a thorough investigation of such occurrences and determine intent on the part of the students involved. Once that is determined, along with a consequence, sensitivity counseling is provided so that students understand that words and actions matter and that phrases that harm another’s selfesteem or make them feel insulted or demeaned are not acceptable.”

Though the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits school officials from discussing specific details of the investigation and discipline for the student responsible, Acevedo said that, in her estimation, “the disciplinary action was appropriate for the results of the investigation.”

A few MHS students, who declined to be identified for fear of retaliation, indicated that while the incident was unusual, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. “I’ve heard words like that thrown around a lot,” said one student. Others indicated that while they knew the action was unacceptable, some students may have perceived it as a joke.

While the incident raised concerns that similar language or treatment of racial divides is a common occurrence at MHS, administrators insisted the case was an isolated incident, rather than the norm. “I don’t think it’s prevalent or habitual,” said Acevedo, a former Key West High School principal and MCSD educator for 36 years. “In talking to (Marathon High School principal Wendy McPherson), this is not something that is a regular occurrence. It is out of the ordinary.

I do not recall any major incidents like this, and in my current position, nothing similar has occurred.”

BRIEFLY Veterans Day parade marches in Key West at 4 p.m. Nov. 11 This year’s Key West Veterans Day parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Nov. 11, starting at the corner of Duval and Virginia streets. Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) South, located at NAS Key West Truman Annex, is this year’s parade coordinator.

Master of ceremonies will be JIATF South’s MSgt Sydney Sullivan, U.S Air Force. Senior military leaders from the community will join Sullivan at the judge’s viewing platform. The public is invited to cheer the parade participants and pay tribute to the service members.

Approximately 20 organizations have signed up to march in this year’s parade.

“The response from various organizations has been outstanding, and the variety of entry types truly reflects the diversity that is celebrated in the Florida Keys.

Entries range from cars, floats and trolleys to Color Guards and marching bands. We even have a group of bagpipe players from New York,” said U.S. Coast Guard CMC Henry Audette. “The response is just another example of the strong support that the Lower Keys demonstrates to its military members, past and present.”

FIGHTER SQUADRON VFC-111 IS KEY WEST’S HOME TEAM

THE SOUND AND THE POWER MANDY MILES

W

e hear them more often than we see them, depending on weather and altitude, but their sound is always unmistakable, approaching like a rising wall of power and supersonic speed that, yes, interrupts the occasional phone call, but never fails to impress.

Sure, we all look up when we see the fighter jets cutting across the sky, independently or in pairs, their supersonic speed outrunning their sound. And after a few years of residency here, we all draft our own improvised, though perhaps less than accurate, version of what these planes and their pilots are doing in the blue sky above our island chain.

But what do we really know about the F-5 Tiger-II fighter jets and their pilots that are a permanent feature in Key West’s backyard at Boca Chica Field and Naval Air Station Key West?

“I’ve heard people say the craziest things about what we do here,” said Cmdr. Matt Pearce, public affairs officer for the resident adversary squadron at Naval Air Station Key West. “One person swore we were practicing dropping bombs. I swear that’s not the case.

Never. Ever. Ever.”

VFC-111 is the home team around here.

Except they play the bad guys.

As an adversary squadron, the pilots of VFC-111 are the instructors who play the enemy during crucial air-to-air combat training.

The squadron became known as the Sun Downers since its establishment in World War II, given its commitment to downing Japanese planes, identified by their giant red sun insignia.

But let’s be real, my fellow children of the ’80s. Most of us learned everything we know about “air combat maneuvering — dogfighting,” from the movie “Top Gun.” To put it in terms we can understand, VFC111 are Viper and Jester, seasoned and expert pilots flying different, or dissimilar, aircraft than the aviators they are training.

airfield, the hangar, the “ready room” for preand post-flight briefings, and their classrooms, complete with those miniature models of jets attached to sticks that allow the pilots to twist, turn and invert, mimicking aerial maneuvers in a classroom before they’re in the air.

The VFC-111 instructors fly their F-5 Tiger-IIs against F-22s, F/A-18 Super Hornets, F-22 Raptors and other fighter jets from other squadrons that visit NASKW, usually for two weeks at a time, training with VFC-111 and taking advantage of Key West’s flight-friendly weather and conveniently located air space, said Pearce, who owns a home, and is raising his kids, in Key West.

I had every intention of conducting a professional interview with Pearce, taking notes and asking intelligent questions while zipping around the airfield at Boca Chica on a golf cart.

But then, something happens, and our “Top Gun” movie quotes kick in.

As surely as someone of our generation (there’s one in every crowd) will sing the name “Roxanne” in the same shrill voice as the Police song, someone else will make “Top Gun” references when touring a naval air station.

“There’s the requisite ‘Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.’”

I won’t deny it. I was that guy a few weeks ago. Let’s just say my enthusiasm eclipsed my professional intentions.

Thankfully, Pearce was a patient instructor and an enthusiastic tour guide, eager to let the Keys community know who VFC-111 is and what they do in our backyard at Boca Chica.

month have grown mustaches and are donating the money raised to fight prostate cancer.

Many of these guys live here. Most are reservists, no longer on active duty. While some have made Key West and the Lower Keys their permanent homes and get involved in the community, others commute from as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah to pursue their passion as fighter and train the next generation of young lions in the fleet, said CDR Derek “Baffle” Ashlock, commanding officer of VFC-111.

They just happen to have one of the coolest jobs on the planet.

(Go ahead, you know you can’t resist. Start singing Kenny Loggins. “Revvin’ up your engine/ Listen to her howlin’ roar/ Metal under tension/ Beggin’ you to touch and go/ Highway to the danger zone….”)

n honor of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, and Key West’s deep-rooted relationship with the military, Keys Weekly honors local veterans of all ages, who have served all over the world, from Iraq and Bosnia to Korea, Kosovo, Vietnam and everywhere in between. We thank you for your service and your dedication to our freedom, on Veterans Day and every other day of the year.

JERRY CURTIS - U.S. ARMY Jerry Curtis served in the U.S. Army for nearly 28 years, from 1971 to 1998. His two brothers also served in the Army and Air Force, each earning a Bronze Star in combat.

“I had graduated from Key West High School, then attended Miami Dade College a while, but I got frustrated with the crime rate in Miami.

I figured I’d go into the Army and get my head straight, while also helping my mom financially,” he said.

Curtis’ first duty station was in Colorado, where he saw snow for the first time ever. He then served in Germany, Kentucky, as a drill instructor in South Carolina, then North Carolina. Curtis became a command sergeant major, the highest rank an enlisted soldier can earn.

“I did two tours in Korea. I fought in the first Gulf War. We started in Saudi Arabia, then went into Iraq. I also fought in the Panama invasion, Bosnia and Kosovo.

KEYS WEEKLY THANKS YOU AND ALL THE OTHERS FOR YOUR SERVICE “The highlight of my career was having 2,000 young men serve under me,” Curtis said. “I knew all their names, their wives’ names and their kids’ names. In fact, I’m going up this weekend to North Carolina to visit some of them.”

COL. BOB NOSSOV - U.S. Army “You don’t do 32 years in the U.S. Army because you have to,” said Col. Bob Nossov, who grew up in an Army family, and graduated high school in Panama. He is a proud member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry, and wrapped up his career with JIATF, doing drug interdiction here in Key West.

He went to Ranger and Airborne school. His wife, Pat Nossov, is also an Army veteran and veterinarian.

“None of my jobs were ever the same,” he said. “I was in every country in South America, except Venezuela and Uruguay.

“I served because I wanted to, not because I had to. You don’t do 32 years because you have to.” Nossov is as proud of his 32-year military career as he is of his 39-year marriage.

“I joined the Army to learn a trade in electronics, and to ‘be all I could be,’” he said, chuckling, during a recent afternoon at the Southernmost VFW Post 3911. “After the Army, I worked as a technical writer for Raytheon, the company that created the HAWK missile systems. I moved to Key West in 1987 and ran the dog racing track on Stock Island.”

CAPT. PHILLIP ‘CURLY’ MCGINN U.S. NAVY Capt. Phillip “Curly” McGinn joined the U.S. Navy in 1966 to “do my patriotic duty.”

As a petty officer, he first spent a year on a navy radar site in the Arctic Circle, then in 1968 volunteered to go to Vietnam, where he worked in Special Forces Navy Riverine Squadron.

“I was down south in the delta region. It was ‘Apocalypse Now’ sort of stuff,” McGinn said. “Then in 1970, I was discharged and returned to Madison, Wisconsin as a ‘student’ and was besieged by radical anti-war protesters.”

JIM BRADY - U.S. ARMY Jim Brady served in the U.S. Army’s Air Defense Artillery from 1976 to 1983, working to repair the electronic systems of the Army’s HAWK missile outfits, some of which were located in Key West, particularly during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s.

ROOSEVELT SANDS - U.S. ARMY Roosevelt Sands, now 91, wanted to be a U.S. Marine, but was turned away, both in Key West and Miami.

“I had dropped out of college at the end of my second year, and I wanted to commit to military service,” he said. “But the sergeant at the recruiting office said no, that he had already met his quota, even though there was an article in the Miami Herald that same week saying the Marines were needing men. So I came back home to Key West, and waited to be drafted.”

He was indeed drafted and immediately after basic training was sent to Korea.

“All during basic training, we were preparing to go to Korea,” he said. “My brother was already serving in Japan. Then, after I got out, I became the first sergeant of the Army Reserve outfit here in Key West for 16 years.”

L

et’s get a few things straight.

Yes, Pepe’s Cafe has been sold. And yes, the new owners are Key West locals.

No, it’s not closing. No, it’s not becoming an Applebee’s or a Thai restaurant.

Key West’s — and the Florida Keys’ — oldest restaurant at 806 Caroline St. is and will remain just as it’s always been — casual and comfortable with some of the freshest food around, from the fish and oysters to the handsqueezed fruit juices at the bar.

At Pepe’s, things have to be fresh, because the timeless treasure tucked into a weathered, formerly white building, doesn’t have a freezer — at least not one big enough to hold anything other than ice cream, said retiring owner Shelley McInnis.

She sold the restaurant on Oct. 18 to Danny and Maura Hughes, who have owned Two Friends Patio Restaurant on Front Street since 2013.

“We don’t see ourselves as the new owners of Pepe’s, but rather as custodians of the legend,” said Danny, who was a Pepe’s customer before he and Maura were Key West residents.

“The essence of Pepe’s will not change on our watch. Why would we mess with a 112-year lineage that clearly works?”

Pepe’s is the oldest restaurant in Key West and the Florida Keys, and the second oldest in Florida, Hughes said.

The restaurant started in the 200 block of Duval Street, where Rick’s Bar now stands.

President Harry Truman ate there when in Key West. Pepe’s Cafe & Steakhouse, as it is formally named, survived the Great Depression and both World Wars on Duval Street. It later spent two years on Catherine Street, where El Siboney is now, but has been on Caroline Street since the 1950s.

“We view it as a privilege to have something so steeped in history and tradition. It’s a storied establishment in such a historically relevant town,” Hughes said.

Hughes said he had considered buying Pepe’s back in 2002, when he and Maura arrived on their boat from New Orleans. But then-owner Allan Miller had already picked his successor to take over whenever he was ready to sell, Hughes said.

That successor was Shelley McInnis, who started working there in 1983, and eventually bought Pepe’s in 2015.

McInnis is ready to retire and “reclaim” her life, as she says. But she knows she’ll miss the camaraderie and daily drama of restaurant life.

She gets a lump in her throat when she talks about favorite regulars, including “Wino Don” and the late, great Bill Lind, who every morning ate breakfast and read the paper in his favorite booth.

“Each year, Allan would sand and varnish all the tables, but neither of us could ever bring ourselves to sand out the cigarette burns that Bill Lind had left in ‘his’ table all those years ago,” McInnis said, adding that she feels really good about selling the place to people who understand its importance and all that it represents to the Key West community of both locals and regular, repeat visitors.

“I didn’t want to feel like I’m selling it so much as passing the torch,” she said. “This place has been open since 1909 and I was only its fourth owner. I know Danny and Maura are buying it because they love Pepe’s. I feel really comfortable, knowing it’s in good hands.”

Hughes has vowed to keep the entire staff at Pepe’s, and continue the tradition of being open 365 days a year.

Pepe’s serves an estimated 350 pounds of turkey every Thanksgiving, McInnis said.

“But we also offer a Thanksgiving dinner meal as a $20 special every Thursday evening,” she said.

Every mimosa, screwdriver and morning glass of orange juice is handsqueezed with an ancient Hamilton Beach juicer.

That won’t change, either, Hughes said.

The legend lives on at Pepe’s, and will always include fresh oysters, served raw on the half shell or baked in three different flavors: Florentine, Mexican and lemon pepper.

Breakfast will still be served from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Lunch will always include soups, sandwiches and seafood, while the dinner menu wouldn’t be complete with Pepe’s trademark “steak smothered in pork chops.”

The dish came from an old Errol Flynn movie, but proved wildly popular decades ago, when fishermen returning from sea would come in seeking anything but seafood.

“I just love our customers and staff,” McInnis said. “Everyone comes in on the recommendation of someone else, so it’s almost as if they’re all pre-screened. They’re just wonderful, and now I’m serving the grandkids of people I first met when they were here on their honeymoon.”

When asked what would be the best compliment he could hear as the new owner of Pepe’s, Hughes said, “I’d just love for Maura or me to walk past a table and have a regular look up and tell us,’Ya done good.’ That’s it. That’d be perfect.”

PREPARE FOR TAKEOFF AIRPORTS DIRECTOR SPEAKS TO KEYS LODGING ASSOCIATION

T

wo vital business organizations, the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys & Key West and the Key West Business Guild, gathered for two separate lunchtime meetings on Nov. 3.

County Airports Director Richard Strickland spoke to lodging officials about the upcoming enhancements at Key West International Airport. He emphasized the significant airport overhaul is not an expansion, but an enhancement, as the airport’s passenger service levels are being increased but not its capacity.

Strickland reported that the airport has welcomed 1.1 million passengers in 2021, as of October. “We’re expecting 1.5 million,” he said, adding that the airport’s previous 12-month record was 980,000 passengers.

“We’ve also added 17 new routes since 2019,” Strickland said, adding that the airlines have the right from the federal govern-

ment to add those routes. “We don’t get to choose their flights. The airlines have that right through interstate commerce laws. I can only talk with them to manage things.

We don’t get to choose which or how many flights come in.”

Strickland also said that he doesn’t expect any additional new flights or destinations being added in 2022. He also said the enhancement project will not include a runway lengthening, which would allow larger planes to land here.

“We’d need another 1,400 feet of runway and that’s not even in our 30-year master plan,” he said.

Meanwhile, around the corner at the Marriott Beachside Hotel, the Key West Business Guild welcomed the Florida Keys SPCA to discuss animal welfare, adoptions and upcoming special events.

RED ELVISES’ DRUMMER IS A UNIQUE TALENT

Two things are certain when one attends a Red Elvises concert: It will be an entertaining show and there will be tremendous musicianship.

The newest member of the band is drummer Taiza de Souza Oliveria, who goes by Tatá Batera. I had the pleasure to chat with her about her background, upbringing and involvement with this band.

Batera was born into a musical family in Brasilia, Brazil. Her parents both performed in their church’s band.

Her father played bass and her mother was a vocalist. Batera soon joined the church band as a percussionist.

As a teen, Batera attended Escola De Musica de Brasília, a prestigious three-year music school in Brazil. She had to audition to get in and took first place in the audition. At 19, she graduated first in her class.

After school, she played with a Christian band in Brazil for 10 years.

They recorded an album in 2015 featuring Batera on drums and some vocals. Having fulfilled her dream of recording, she decided it was time to take the next step and moved to California.

In Pasadena, California, she attended the California College of Music and earned her one-year certificate in 2020. She began to play with several jazz fusion groups. Her greatest influences have been jazz drummers including Dave Weckl, Danny Gottlieb and Antonio Sanchez.

Justin Chart, a well-known California jazz sax player, hired her to play with him. They recorded a song together for the Woodwind Festival.

She continued to work with and learn from her California College of Music instructor Craig Pilo, who hap-

pened to be a former drummer with The Red Elvises.

In late 2020, Igor reached out to his former drummer asking him to recommend a drummer to fill the recent opening in The Red Elvises. Pilo recommended Batera.

“I had to audition alongside seven other drummers,” recalls Batera. “I was confident even though all the others were also quite talented.”

Igor loved her audition and hired her to tour with the band. She joined them on the road in February and is touring with them as a member for their 25th anniversary tour.

Batera is a special talent as both a drummer and vocalist. She drums with unparalleled flare and power. Her prowess on stage is undeniable.

“We were very busy on this tour,” she says with gratitude. “In 2021, we took a total of just over 30 days off.

The band is so much fun and full of talent. Our goal each night is to have as much fun as possible and put on a great show for our fans. Touring with these guys is great. There are no egos in this band. We are all very respectful of each other.”

While in Key West, Batera showed off another of her skills when she prepared for her bandmates a traditional Brazilian dish called feijoada. It is Brazilian BBQ made with pork, black beans, collard greens, jerk seasoning and rice.

I wish I were there to enjoy this feast.

If she cooks only half as well as she drums, it was surely delicious.

n Oct. 27, Monroe County’s bench gained its newest judge as Jimmy Morgan was sworn in by Judge Mark H. Jones.

“I always identified him as an outstanding person, not just as a lawyer but as a human being in terms of his character, his commitment to duty and his diligence,” said Jones.

A graduate of the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law, Morgan said he has had “a history of service” from a young age. A former student body president in high school and fraternity president in college, he served more than eight years with the United States Marine Corps as a prosecutor upon graduation from law school.

“When I graduated from law school, I had always been in awe of those who had served our country,” said Morgan. “I thought, ‘Maybe I should stop just admiring these guys and do it myself.’”

Morgan credits his days in the Marines, and mentorship from senior officers, as experiences that helped shape him and provide a genuine sense of the nature of justice. He enjoyed learning the prosecution function as he was tasked with special victims cases. “A lot of those victims were the voiceless,” said Morgan. “You’re able to be the voice for them and find some measure of accountability.”

After resuming civilian life, Morgan took his first opportunity to head to Key West, where he joined the public defender’s office.

“I thought, if I’m going to learn the defense function, it would be interesting to serve those who truly can’t afford legal representation, people who probably need the protections the most,” he said.

Even with a prosecution background, Morgan said, he came to love defense work as well. “It was a commitment to service, but I also had great peer mentors who were closer to my age. When you spend time in both the prosecution and the defense function, you get an idea of what it’s all about.”

It was in Key West that Morgan had the opportunity to practice in front of Jones, who served as chief judge at the time. “Being a judge has always been a dream of mine,

and Judge Jones used to always say, ‘Each and every case rises and falls on its own merits,’” said Morgan. “It’s not one size fits all; each case has its own factual scenario and different people.

You have to look at all the factors, you just have to. It always felt like Judge Jones arrived at a true sense of justice.”

After gaining experience on both sides of the courtroom, Morgan said he found himself anticipating and predicting the outcomes of cases, whether or not they were in his favor. It was at this point that he believed he was ready for the next step. “There comes a point when you’re looking left and looking right and you say, ‘okay, I kind of get it,’” said Morgan. “You have to put yourself in the best position possible to move on to the next phase. I feel like I did that by investing time and energy and effort in learning one skill at a time.”

By his own estimation, years of experience in both prosecution and defense, coupled with Marine Corps training that allowed him to make decisions under duress while in active duty, prepared him for the challenges of presiding over cases. “In the Marine Corps, lawyers are line officers, and they can take command of marines and go into combat. I was a decision maker,” he said.

When appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, Morgan was thrilled to accept the new position. “It was a true honor to receive the governor’s appointment,” he said. “It’s great to be sitting on the bench alongside the judges who serve Monroe County. There are some great people and great lawyers here who’ve committed themselves for decades.”

ustin Martin, who became the Key West High School athletic director at the beginning of ... a veteran sports the school year, will continue to coach the columnist, says school’s girls soccer team as well. He admits the only sport that doing both is tough, but doable. he doesn’t follow is cricket. The past long weekend looked to be a major sports weekend and it was, but it turned into a major sports news weekend as well. While sports fans (myself included) were wrapped up in Thursday’s NFL showdown between oncebeaten Green Bay and unbeaten Arizona, it was announced that Florida Panthers NHL coach Joel Quenneville, whose team was unbeaten, had resigned, caught up in the Chicago Blackhawk sex scandal in which an assistant coach attacked a player. Quenneville, the Chicago coach four years ago, apparently knew about the crime and did nothing about it.

Also, during Thursday’s exciting game, it was announced that the Miami Marlins had signed shortstop Miguel Rojas for two years for a total of $10 million. The baseball season’s outstanding performers, including Baltimore’s Trey Mancini, the Comeback Player of the Year as he came back from colon cancer, were named. And in pro football, the Rooney Rule was essentially doubled, with teams looking for general managers or coordinators having to interview two minority candidates instead of one.

During Thursday’s college football game, a film clip was inserted showing Mississippi State coach Mike Leach humorously discussing his favorite Halloween candies.

Leach has lived in Key West and when unemployed helped coach the Conchs.

I can’t get away without mentioning Thursday’s game in which Arizona became the last team to lose its perfect season status. Let the 1972 Miami Dolphins celebrate still being the only team with a perfect season. Green Bay won, 24-21, when newcomer Rasul Douglas, taken by Green Bay from Arizona’s practice squad just three weeks ago, intercepted a pass in the end zone with 15 seconds left.

Of course, if the 5-yard pass had been complete, Arizona would have won. Or if the Cardinals had one more play, a short field goal would have tied it and forced overtime.

It was speculated that the top candidates for college football’s Heisman Award are quarterbacks Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh, Mississippi’s Matt Corral and Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud.

And the weekend was just starting. On Friday, the World Series continued between Houston and Atlanta and the redhot Miami Heat played Charlotte (and Memphis on Saturday, winning both).

On Saturday, there was naturally a full schedule of college football games with Michigan at Michigan State and Miami at No. 17 Pittsburgh, followed by Florida at No. 1 Georgia and Penn State at No. 5 Ohio State in the evening.

Michigan State upset Michigan; Miami stunned Pitt and jumped back into the ACC title race. Florida kept up with Georgia until giving up three TDs in the three minutes before halftime and the Buckeyes finished barely ahead of Penn State.

How could Sunday top all this? Well, the Miami Dolphins were in Buffalo with the Bills a 14-point favorite.

Surprise, surprise. The Dolphins teased by holding the Bills to a 3-3 halftime tie before falling apart in the second half and losing 26-11, with a late Buffalo TD awarding victory to those who bet on the Bills. In upsets, the Jets surprised Cincinnati, 34-31, and the Steelers beat the Browns, 15-10.

Tennessee beat Indianapolis in overtime but paid a horrible price. The team’s and the league’s leading rusher, Derrick Henry, injured a foot and could be out for the rest of the season. That could mean playing time for Key West’s Mekhi Sargent, who has not been active for the Titans’ last five games.

If that weren’t enough for you, a similar set of games, pro and college, starts tonight, Nov. 4.

By Cheryl Diamond Harbhajan, meaning “song of God” in Sanskrit, was 4 years old when it became clear that her family was uncommonly different. Repeatedly changing identities, continents and even religions, their only consistency was their family unit. Harbhajan idolized handsome older brother Frank, tolerated her angry sister Chiara and was completely devoted to her parents — intelligent, free spirits who simply floated around the world “appearing” to live a spiritual existence. Little did she know that they would spend the next two decades on the run because in actuality her charismatic father was a wanted criminal and her beautiful mother was desperate to escape her complicated past. With little formal schooling, it is amazing how quickly Harbhajan and her siblings learned random subjects while she and Frank excelled at a variety of athletics her parents obsessively required.

As Harbhajan morphed into Crystal and Cheryl she began to analyze her father’s increasingly unhealthy temper and abusive manipulations. Cheryl finally reached her limits when her health declined and she miraculously found the strength to reinvent herself once again. This fast paced, well written narrative is hard to put down.

FRANCHISES IN DESPERATE NEED OF A SPORTS TITLE

O

ur Top 10 this week is reserved for the underdogs, sponsored by the unlikely Atlanta Braves. “America’s team” defied all odds by overcoming a losing record to become the 2021 World Series Champions this week. It wasn’t enough that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred politicized all of baseball by removing the All-Star game from Atlanta this past summer (no matter where you stand on this issue, it was safe to say he punished the wrong people by doing so). Or that the Braves lost their two most proficient hitters, Ronald Acuna and Marcell Ozuna, by early July. While most teams would have thrown in the towel and traded core players for future stars, Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos doubled down and masterfully added a historically defying team of winners. In so doing, the Braves shattered a lingering curse that has plagued the city since 1996 — when the Braves squandered a 2-0 series lead against the New York Yankees. From there, Atlanta teams would continue to make big games. Take big leads.

And then defiantly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Even for the sports novice, there is a collective understanding that Atlanta teams have a tendency to choke and blow leads. And not just any leads.

Major leads … and at the worst possible moments, which, over time, tend to sting longer and louder than the mere futility of losing in general. After all, it takes a winning culture to consistently make the playoffs, but for Atlanta-based teams, a looming ceiling of mediocrity and “pretty good teams” have

seemingly been a fate carved out by the most sinister of the sports gods.

The proof of Atlanta sports futility is overwhelming and well-documented. Ask any fan in the Peach State, and they’ll reluctantly admit they’ve had their collective hearts ripped out by Atlanta teams on so many occasions their souls have become numb to the repetitive pain. No other team in any other moment has suffered more than during the Falcons’ infamous collapse from a 28-3 lead with only a quarter and a half remaining in Super Bowl LI. And yet other scars remain in A-town, including a fresh scab from the Braves’ 3-1 NLCS series lead, which was squandered at the hands of the L.A. Dodgers just a season ago.

Or the 16 straight playoff appearances by the Braves without a World Series win (let alone a title). Or the other dozen or so games when the Atlanta Falcons have blown leads in fourth quarters, including yet another epic 17-point collapse to the 49ers in the 2012 NFC Championship (that was only overshadowed by the aforementioned historical 28-3 meltdown). And for good measure, just dig deeper into the state’s beloved Georgia Bulldogs, who will argue a few bad calls here and a few cursed bounces there have deprived the Athens faithful from adding to their first title since 1980.

And while we could peel the scabs off dozens of other blundering meltdowns and almost scripted comebacks against Atlanta teams, the Atlanta Braves did something remarkable late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. They won. And they didn’t just win

the World Series, they did it in convincing fashion — downing the Houston Astros 7-0 to take a four-games-to-two series victory. To say the least, it was the most “un-Atlanta-like” moment since the Braves won the city’s only other major title in 1995 (with the exception of a recent MLS title, if you dare work that into a barroom debate). In fact, even with a seven-run lead in the bottom of the 9th, and with Joe Buck and John Smoltz all but declaring Atlanta the winner, every Braves fan across the nation was still calculating how this epic meltdown could be worse than the last. That was until the final out was official — and for most Atlanta fans, what should have been an ecstatic celebration seemed more like a long sigh of relief.

With the win, the Braves single-handedly removed a dark cloud from above the state of Georgia, even if temporarily, while fans now turn their attention to college football’s current number-one ranked and undefeated Georgia Bulldogs.

Our congratulations go out to the 2021 World Series champion Atlanta Braves.

The team’s remarkable turnaround at the All-Star break could very well be one of MLB’s most improbable storylines in history. And who knows?

Perhaps the rising Hawks and mediocre Falcons will get the memo, but for now, Atlanta fans can actually take pride in a gutsy and historic feat that deemed the city “champions” (without the connotations of “choke” and 28-3).

10. New York Jets — a tradition of losing since 1970.

9. Buffalo Bills — over 55 seasons without a title. 1966 to present day.

Like the Arizona Cardinals, they are currently one of the NFL’s top teams.

8. Los Angeles Chargers — 1964 to present day without a title. A young, superstar quarterback could change this very soon.

7. Tennessee Titans — haven’t won since 1962. A recent season-ending injury to their star running back will likely keep this streak alive.

6. Texas Rangers — 1961 to present day. They do have one of the league’s biggest stars, but no rings or opportunities since 2010 and 2011 Series losses.

5. Atlanta Hawks — reached just their second conference finals in team history last season. But no rings since 1958.

4. Detroit Lions — Nothing doing since 1958. And for lack of a better word, they suck again in 2021.

3. Cleveland Browns — over 70 seasons without a title, and yet they still boast some of the most loyal fans.

2. Atlanta Falcons — 28-3. Need we say more? (1966 to present without a title).

1. Arizona Cardinals — have never won, from 1949 to present day. But they look great in 2021. Could this be their year?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

AN OPEN LETTER FROM THE MONROE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL COALITION TO KEYS ELECTED OFFICIALS: To all elected officials who have campaigned on improving public health and environmental issues and appointed public officials who are responsible for protecting the public health, safety, and welfare, as well as our important environment throughout the Florida Keys, please read and respond to each of the items below. These issues raised at public meetings for years have been met with silence and inaction by most and stifling by the County Commission. Officials, with fingers in ears, eagerly address developments in southwest Miami Dade, but are tongue-tied on a matter of health and safety in our own community.

This is an opportunity for members of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) to support their historical claims and positions and for each elected official throughout Monroe County at the county, municipal and state level to comment for the benefit of our community. Historically, members of FKMCD have provided repetitive responses that promote vendor marketing messages, devoid of independent scientific support for performance claims, while characterizing our questions as being filled with false representations. Despite repeated appeals for examples or proof of “misrepresentation,” none are provided by Chairman Phil Goodman, or any of our FKMCD board members.

This is a FKMCD board sporting record tax increases, polluted land requiring remediation and nearly $1 million in financial penalties, a surprise dengue outbreak while ignoring years of trap data showing the mosquito increases in Key Largo with no prevention taken or warning given.

Now our FKMCD has bought a shiny new squadron of exotic aircraft, contrasting the fact that both outbreaks since 2009 were resolved with boots on the ground basic control methods.

The time has come for your response to these deceptions and lies: 1. “We ran a referendum and the 31 of 33 precincts approved the release of the GMM experiment.”

The OX5034 is very different from the previous genetically modified mosquito, OX513A, that was planned for release. Our public has never voted on the release of OX5034 and only one community, Key Haven, was ever provided the opportunity to decide if they wanted to be part of a wild release of GMMs. Key Haven rejected the technology on a 2:1 margin after four years of study.

Goodman and others within the FKMCD forced a poorly understood subject and vote onto the broader community of the Florida Keys, with only six weeks to educate the public on a complex subject like GMMs and experimentation risks….This is not a badge of honor, or an endorsement by our community, it is a

reprehensible embarrassment of how disingenuous politically or egotistically motivated officials can be if they choose. It should be and is viewed by many in Monroe County, as a betrayal of trust....

2. “The Oxitec GMM reduces the number of people who get Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.”

This statement was never proven correct by the EPA or any other government agency, because of several factors, perhaps the most concerning being other vector mosquitoes that carry these diseases backfilling the Aedes Aegypti (AA) habitat upon suppression and being capable of infecting humans at similar rates.

3. “Oxitec will be good because we will reduce the use of chemicals.” There will be “no reduction” of chemical spraying, as stated

by Andrea Leal and Michael Doyle at FKMCD. Because the AA is a small percentage of the mosquito population in the Florida Keys, the same amount of chemicals must continue.

Which way is it?

4. “It’s a free trial.” Perhaps if you don’t count all the hours FKMCD workers are contributing to the test program, since they are the only ones administering the field part of the experiment, wear and tear on equipment, fuel cost and all the overhead that comes along with it. Let’s sum that up and see how close to free it is.

5. “There have been no studies that found any negative impacts on humans.”

There have been absolutely no scientific studies on humans, period. There are no independent studies to support any of Oxitec’s claims. Contrary to this claim, Oxitec has prevented nearly three dozen doctors, on a signed petition, from investigating the potential of their technology to promote and spread antibiotic resistant bacteria. Why would this public health concern, expressed by approximately 20% of the physicians in the Keys, not be supported by our Department of Health and the FKMCD? 6. “These Oxitec Genetically Modified Mosquitoes (GMMs) have been tested all over the world.” Not a single tested location decided to use this bio-pesticide. In Malaysia, India, Panama, the Caymans and in Brazil, where Oxitec has full commercial sales authority since 2016, there is no mass adoption, only trials that are grant-funded or paid for by Oxitec. Perhaps a cost benefit analysis would be appropriate? Despite numerous community requests, the FKMCD has never seen the need, but they have released an invasive, genetically modified species that they do not fully understand in our communities.

7. “The EPA conducted independent studies to prove Oxitec’s claims are valid.”

As reported to Congressman Carlos Gimenez, in response to his official letter of inquiry, not

only has no independent testing been reported by the EPA, but the EPA did not and continues not to require an independent study that proves the claims made by Oxitec prior to testing on human and the wild ecosystems. Oxitec hired Roy Bailey, a politically connected lobbyist, who began a campaign to instill fear and achieve compliance from EPA officials during the OX5034 Experimental Use Permit evaluation process. Objectively, EPA officials who were not part of the OX5034 evaluation process, but instead in charge of Pesticides Enforcement for the EPA, stated that vendor claims of product safety and efficacy are not accepted and require third-party independent verification through defined scientific processes. This has not occurred with Oxitec’s technology, primarily due to political interference it seems.

These are but a few of the issues about which our elected officials should be aware and provide their comments to our community about acceptability and concerns. Elected officials like Goodman, who have the responsibility of acting in good faith for the interest of the community, have taken a combative position with local opponents who simply insist that our human and ecosystem health deserves the protection that only honesty, transparency and competence can provide.

Each of these seems absent from the FKMCD process and decision, while affinity and submission to a vendor has been clearly demonstrated by various members for years.

In 2018 Goodman was a key component of an Oxitec marketing video. Seen by many and exposed, it is now hidden away. The current contract for the “experiment” assures Oxitec controls all information. We will never know the truth, no one will.

In an intoxicated stupor to experiment on the Keys with a risky bio-pesticide, AA mosquito counts in Key Largo rose over the years preceding the 2020 dengue outbreak, yet not a word was mentioned to those vulnerable to the increasing risk. Why wasn’t it treated when it was manageable?

Perhaps we need a different process for choosing competent members who oversee the interest of the Florida Keys community in abating mosquitoes? We are not beholden to an elected state body known as the FKMCD. They have surely shown they are not beholden to us.

’ve done stupider things, but driving north on U.S. 1 on Fantasy Fest Friday to chase a bird, when I knew I was just going to have to come back down in all that traffic, was at least in my top 50 – for the third decade of the new millennium, anyway.

I’ve taken it on as kind of a mantra for all sorts of nonliterary activities – go out and do the thing, or at least try to, but don’t get too emotionally caught up in it. It seemed an especially fine maxim when facing hours of bumper-to-bumper purgatory.

Still, the bird, it tasked me.

The bird had been seen at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier.

When first reported, it was listed as a wandering tattler, a shorebird with one of my favorite names because it seemed the entire ornithological community had ganged up to label the species a peripatetic blabbermouth, a homeless narc.

The “tattler” part came from the fact that the species tends to call a lot, though opinions vary as to whether it’s tattling to hunters where all the birds are, or tattling to all the other birds that there are hunters around. The “wandering” part comes from the fact that they do like to roam, though mostly on the West Coast, and never as far as Florida. While it was a great sighting for the Keys, I’d seen a bunch of them in Oregon and California, and it wasn’t enough to overcome my innate anti-chasing inertia.

But then the internet bird ID sleuths got on the case, and started analyzing leg colors, tail feathers and supercilia. They decided it was not, in fact, a wandering tattler, but rather the exponentially more rare gray-tailed tattler, a species that breeds in Siberia, winters in Australia, and occasionally shows up in Alaska.

According to eBird, there had been only two other sightings of the species in the lower 48 states – one that hung around Nantucket for three days in 2012, and one that flew over an uninhabited rocky island off the coast of Maine in 2017, and was seen and photographed by one guy, who just happened to be out there doing research.

The Tavernier bird had been seen steadily all week – people had been putting up great photos – but a small front had come through early Friday morning, which was my first chance to go see it, and bad weather will sometimes chase a rare bird off, so I waited to see if it was reported later in the morning.

When it was, I texted my pilot friend Craig to see if he would fly me up, and he pointed out that Tavernier didn’t have an airport. When I suggested he land on the highway, he texted back a lot of mealy-mouthed stuff about safety, legality, fines and getting his license revoked, then suggested I make friends with a helicopter pilot.

So I got in the car. Two-and-a-half-hours and 10 chicken McNuggets later, I was at Harry Harris Park.

There was a baker’s half-dozen other birders standing around, spread out along the gulfside shoreline, which wasn’t a good sign.

If the gray-tailed tattler was apparent, everyone would have been bunched up together, looking at the bird. But one of the guys there said they’d seen the bird about 45 minutes before, and it seemed to have a pattern. It worked its way down the shoreline, disappeared farther down out of sight for a while, then came back and started all over again, kind of like a typewriter working itself across the page.

I set up on a rock and began my vigil in a small cove with a wrecked sailboat with “Ship of Fools” painted on the transom.

There was quite a bit to see. Boats were coming in and out of the boat ramp. A Cooper’s hawk shot up and into the top of a buttonwood and gave me the stink eye. Ruddy turnstones disappeared in and out of the rocks. An influencer having her moment walked out onto the pier in a long, flowing dress as two people followed her around with cameras. Osprey made their complaints.

Occasionally I would get up from my rock and walk down to the end of the park and back, stopping to talk to the other birders, asking if they’d had any luck, but knowing by their dispositions before we even spoke, that they had not.

After three hours I realized it was time to head back, and I was fighting off the feeling that karma had gone all Lucy Van Pelt on me again, making me commit to actually wanting something, before pulling away the football of me actually getting it. But that’s a bad way to think.

I wasn’t going to have a chance to drive up again for at least another week, but it was possible the bird could be there. It was possible the bird would stay all winter. Weird stuff happens in the Keys. It’s why we live here.

wo pioneering female explorers recently sat down with Keys Weekly to share insights from lives in the field as well as their hope and advice for the Florida Keys.

Sylvia Earle, famed oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer in Residence, is better known as “Her Deepness.” The living legend has led hundreds of research expeditions and spent more than 7,000 hours underwater. She was also NOAA’s first female chief scientist.

Mireya Mayor, Earle’s terrestrial counterpart, lovingly called “Her Wildness,” is also no stranger to exploration. A primatologist and explorer, she co-discovered the world’s smallest primate: a species of mouse lemur in Madagascar. She served as National Geographic’s first female and first female Hispanic wildlife correspondent.

Here’s what they had to say: Keys Weekly: How did you begin exploring?

Sylvia Earle: I think everyone starts out exploring as a child — all of us.

We want to know everything about everything. ... Often, that curiosity gets discouraged as we grow up. … I do what all kids and scientists do, I just never quite grew up.

KW: How do exploration and conservation connect? Do we need both?

Mireya Mayor: We need both. ...

Exploration leads you to new places, new animals, new discoveries. Conser-

vation is there to protect those places, those animals, those people….Both are crucial to protecting our planet.

KW: What are you most proud of being known for?

SE: Maybe I’ll get there someday.

Maybe it’s the next thing.

MM: I’m very proud of the trajectory I've taken into this field. I don't have the typical scientist background, and that's what I embrace. I'm a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader. Then I became known as the “Female Indiana Jones” — “Her Wildness.” I co-discovered the world's smallest primate species. And I’m a mom of six, a title I'm incredibly proud of.

KW: Do you have a favorite exploration memory?

MM: Trekking over 1,000 miles with the Masai has to be one of the most unbelievable experiences and memories of my life. I learned so much from them. When we go into ancient forests, we see trees; they see a medicine cabinet, a grocery store.

KW: You’ve been to Aquarius (an underwater scientific laboratory in Islamorada). Tell us about it.

SE: To really get to know individual animals, to realize their personalities and to see their place in the system around them and see how the system around them affects them, you need the gift of time. FIU gives us this within the ocean, with Aquarius. I've saturated at least 10 times. … It’s really a step in the right direction.

KW: What’s the most pressing environmental concern that we have?

SE: For the oceans, it’s what we put in (plastics) and take out (marine life). ... If we ... understood the hole in the ecosystem that you created when you consumed (the fish), that it doesn't recover — we might think twice instead of just casually dining on what is marketed as delicious. And maybe it is delicious, but it sure doesn't taste so good when you know the truth.

MM: For me, climate, climate, climate. In order to fix the climate, you have to preserve the land and the oceans. You have to stop emissions and encourage carbon recapture.

KW: Any advice from your life in the field?

SE: Protect nature. Protect the diversity of life all around us, on the land and in the sea. Respect them. View the world through their eyes, if you will, and even through the viewpoint of those who don't have eyes — like corals or mangroves. And do it as if your life depends on it, because it does.

MM: Realize how little we really need. I've spent most of my life in some of the poorest countries in the world, with people (who) western society would deem to have little to nothing. And yet, they're not just surviving, they're thriving. ... I learned: We don't have to waste and over-consume, and we can still be happy. The things that really matter in life are not things.

KW: What message do you want to share?

SE: Think about what we're taking out of our life support system. Think about what we're putting into our life support system, the ocean. And, make your choices: Do you want to be a part of the solution or the problem?

MM: The strong message for me is that humans are inextricably a part of the problem that we're facing with the natural world. But, we are just as inextricably connected to the solution. There are solutions. There is hope. And, it’s really not that hard; it doesn't have to be complicated. …

It can be little daily things that every person does that contribute to a much healthier planet. ... We all have to work together.

KW: What is one step people can take?

SE: Start with your backyard. Think about what you do in your little space in your jurisdiction. If you have a lawn, plant wildflowers and native trees.

MM: People can remain engaged and help with science and research.

Attend university events. Learn what scientists are working on. If local, volunteer. If you can, support conservation plans and efforts. It makes a tremendous difference.

he days of plastic Spiderman masks with an elastic strap are a thing of the past in Key West, where any costume opportunity is taken very seriously. The younger generation has watched their parents go all-out for Halloween and Fantasy Fest, and they’re now carrying the torch admirably.

Mary Immaculate Star of the Sea hosted a costume-and-candy event on Oct. 29, when students went “trunk-or-treating” among dozens of decorated car trunks staffed by parents.

On the same day, just up the street, the entire staff turned the Tax Collector’s office into Munchkinland and the Emerald City. Toto was in a basket.

The wicked witch was a dastardly shade of green and the ruby slippers were visible on the late witch’s feet under Dorothy’s house, all thanks to the creativity of decorators Jacki Collins and Jenni Lynn in that office.
