Although gas prices held relatively steady last week, AAA said another increase could be on the way. Crude and gasoline futures prices rose again last week, setting new 2021 highs. The price of U.S. crude increased 4% last week. Friday's settlement of $82.28 per barrel was $3 per barrel more than the week before. s of press time, the Oct. 20 Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting was action-packed. Events included the ceremonious swearing in of new commissioner Holly Raschein, a resolution that masks are no longer required to enter government buildings and lots of talk about transportation and traffic accidents.

In an odd coincidence, Commissioner Eddie Martinez arrived late to the meeting, due to having been in a car accident. He explained that his car was rear-ended in front of Sugarloaf School and apologized to the board.

The meeting started on a high note with Holly Raschein, wearing blinged-out stilettos covered in an American flag design, being sworn in as county commissioner. Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Raschein to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners’ District 5 seat on Sept. 24.

Raschein, who served eight years as state representative and serves as government relations director for AshBritt, is filling the seat of Mike Forster, who passed away from COVID-19 on Sept.

The audience burst into a loud round of applause and Mayor Michelle Coldiron said, “I want to welcome you to the dais. This is quite a wonderful moment.”

“Thank you, Madame Mayor,” Raschein replied.

More good news came when Shannon Weiner, director of emergency management, and Bob Eadie, administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, made their presentations about the county’s COVID-19 status.

Weiner said that currently, the average number of new cases per day is 11, “and that has been holding for the month of October.” The number of COVID patients in the hospitals: 3 at Lower Keys Medical Center, 0 at Fishermen’s, and 2 at Mariners. The percentage of the county’s 12 and older population that has been vaccinated is 81 percent.

“That does grow daily,” she said. “Just for regional perspective, Miami-Dade is at 93 percent.”

Next, Eadie said, “We’re really in a good place. … I think your mask mandates or recommendations or requirements can be eased now.”

County administrator Roman Gastesi confessed that he still doesn’t feel comfortable not wearing a mask.

“I’ll continue to wear a mask around people in my office,” he said. “You just don’t know who's vaccinated and who's not.”

“Roman, our messaging should be: You need to be careful. Washing your hands, stay out of crowds, wear a mask when you feel comfortable. But you don’t have to wear it all the time,” Eadie responded. “I think COVID is here to stay. We will deal with it hopefully in the next flu season. There’s a lot of research going into how to make vaccines better.”

Unlike in many local government meetings from August and September, no speakers appeared from the public to speak about masks. A motion to sunset the mask order in county buildings was unanimously passed.

Daniel Iglesias and Antonette Adams, staff from the Florida Department of Transportation District 6, came to present FDOT’s five-year plan of projects for Monroe County. District 6 includes Miami-Dade and Monroe County.

Adams said that the total funding for District Six is $3.4 billion for five years’ worth of projects. Of that, $328.9 million has been allocated for Monroe County’s projects, including for bridges, aviation and resurfacing.

In a display showing that she means business in her first meeting as county commissioner, Raschein had a suggestion for FDOT’s staff.

“Miami-Dade County gets the lion’s share of that $3.4 billion,” she said.

“And I didn’t want to sound ungrateful that our meager $328 million — don’t forget the .9 million — is close to an 85 percent increase from last time. And thank you so much for using those dollars wisely, but considering we have U.S. 1, the lifeblood of our community, maybe we can up that, the ante, next time.”

However, FDOT’s Adams did have some very welcome news which was met with another round of applause: the Old 7 Mile Bridge is slated to be completed in the next four months after several years of renovation.

Council against proposal to expand urban development in Miami-Dade JIM McCARTHY

slamorada Village Council is sending a message of disapproval against a proposal that would see even more development in MiamiDade near the Homestead Air Reserve Base.

In a 5-0 vote, council members approved a resolution that urges the county to the north of the Keys to deny an amendment to its comprehensive development master plan, which would expand a boundary that allows for development to include almost 800 acres of land. Last month, Miami-Dade Commissioners voted 9-3 to send the expansion request to state agencies for further review.

Aligned Real Estate Holdings LLC, owned by Jose Hevia, and South Dade Industrial Partners LLC, an affiliate of Coral Rock Development Group, filed an expedited comprehensive development master plan amendment with county officials March 8. The land is located on the south side of Florida’s Turnpike and north of Southwest 268th Street, between Southwest 122nd Ave. and Southwest 107th Ave. Expanding the urban development line would open hundreds of acres of land for warehouses, retail and other projects east of the Florida Turnpike and adjacent to an environmentally sensitive area. It’s drawing concern from many organizations and elected officials, including Islamorada Councilman Mark Gregg, who brought the resolution before council at its Oct. 14 meeting.

Miami-Dade County’s Urban Development Boundary is designed to protect Everglades and diminishing farmland by creating a development buffer for housing, malls, warehouses and other projects. Those concerned with the proposal fear that with more development comes more strain on the environment and vital resources.

“It’s going to have a tremendous impact on the population and the business activity in that area, which in my view is going to have a spillover effect toward us,” Gregg said. “There’s going to be 11,000 to 25,000 jobs that are created when this is built. There’s going to be 10 million square feet of warehouse space and retail space and some residences. There’s going to be an Amazon Fulfillment Center. It kind of ties into the conversation with FDOT about the extension of the turnpike

on U.S. 1. I can’t see how it can be good for the village and the Keys.”

Gregg said he used to live about 2 miles from the site as a kid. He hunted fish and camped on property, and he knows it to be a sensitive environmental area.

Councilman “It was beautiful back in Mark Gregg the day. It was all farmland and woods, and part of the reason to have that (urban development) boundary is to preserve some of that area,” Gregg said.

Several public speakers voiced their concern to the dais on Miami-Dade’s initial approval. Kelly Cox, director of Everglades policy with Audubon Florida, said it’s bad for the Florida Keys in several ways.

“We think it will drive up the cost of housing for many of our members of our blue collar workforce in the Keys. It’s going to increase congestion on our already hyper-congested highway where no one can ever make a left-hand turn,” Cox said. “It has the ability to adversely impact drinking wells. This expansion of the urban development boundary is doing the opposite of what the urban development boundary set out to prevent.”

Cox added that Homestead Air Reserve Base and National Park Service are concerned about the project. In addition, Cox said Miami-Dade staff members recommended denial of the application to county commissioners. Cox concluded by stating that the proposed development in south Miami-Dade would affect Everglades restoration projects with huge implications for the Florida Keys.

“It presents a barrier for us to continue to send water south to Florida Bay. It puts us at

continual risk of seagrass die offs and even fish kills or fishery collapses,” Cox said.

Emma Haydocy, executive director of Florida Bay Forever, said the proposed megaplex in south Miami-Dade will directly affect everyone downstream in the Florida Keys. Most importantly, Haydocy said, it has potential to undermine ongoing Everglades projects across the southeastern Everglades and Florida Bay. “We are now six years out from the last seagrass die-off that irreparably harmed our communities here in Islamorada,” Haydocy said. “But we should not be quick to forget that until we see full restoration of the Everglades, our village, residents and communities will be vulnerable to the same ecological catastrophe. We are at a make or break point for Florida Bay.” Moving the Urban Development Boundary requires a two-thirds vote of the Miami-Dade County Commission. Per the application, moving the line and providing for development would “provide much-needed employment opportunities in south Miami-Dade, where many residents have long commutes to work. The county’s main employment centers are further north along traffic-clogged highways.”

“Creating jobs across our community is needed now more than ever, especially in South Dade, whose population continues to grow,” Hevia said in March. “With consumer retail logistics becoming increasingly important in today’s ecommerce-driven economy and the tech sector looking to South Florida as a hub, the creation of this special district will enable South Dade to meet growing demand for logistics, tech and office space, while creating nearly 25,000 new jobs in the next decade and beyond.”

Once state agencies review the proposal, a second vote on the matter would take place among the Miami-Dade Commission. A specific date isn’t known and could take months.

ER INSURANCE ISSUE RESOLVED Florida Blue now considered in-network at hospitals after ‘oversight’ JIM McCARTHY

A

n oversight left those insured by Florida Blue and three other insurance companies out of network for emergency room visits to Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals. Swift work, however, among several parties has resolved the issue for at least three of the insurance companies that Keys residents use that are now accepted in-network.

Last month, a Monroe County employee insured by Florida Blue visited the ER and noticed something wasn’t right about the charge. That’s when the employee went to Monroe County Employee Services Director Bryan Cook with concern that the ER visit wasn’t covered by Florida Blue, a Blue Cross Blue Shield product.

Come to find out, the hospitals’ new contracted ER services company, SHI Keys, didn’t have the same contract with the same in-network providers for insurance as Baptist Health South Florida, of which Mariners Hospital in Tavernier and Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon are a part. Drew Grossman, CEO of Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals, said its management care department got hold of SHI Keys president Ruddy Valdes. SHI then got connected with a Florida Blue rep and worked out the issue within two to three weeks.

SHI Keys, which is a group of emergency room physicians contracted to provide care at Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals, started operating on Jan. 1, 2021. Grossman entered as CEO of Baptist’s Keys hospitals last February.

“Our requirement is all the plans (Baptist) has, you have to have. If we have Florida Blue, Aetna, Cigna and United you have to have the same ones,” Grossman said. “He realized he didn’t have that.

“The whole thing was an oversight and I really don’t know where it was not caught, but it doesn’t matter at this point. We really did an unbelievable job of how fast this thing got repaired,” he continued.

Agreements were also reached between SHI Keys and insurance companies Cigna and Aetna. Grossman said SHI Keys is still working on an agreement with United Healthcare.

“Sometimes it takes a little bit of time, but at least they’re in talks with them right now. We just have to wait for that one to get done,” Grossman

said. “Nobody was out to harm. Nobody was out to do this maliciously.

I apologize as CEO of Mariners and Fishermen’s, but also as a rep of Baptist Health, that this happened.

We correctly got it fixed.”

Cook said a similar instance, some six years ago at Lower Keys Medical Center, took about six months to resolve. The fact that the issue at Baptist Health South Florida saw a resolution under four weeks speaks to the responsiveness from SHI and Baptist, as well as emphasis that the county placed on it, he said.

Roughly 1,300 Monroe County employees and 1,000 dependents are insured through Florida Blue. The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority, city of Marathon and village of Islamorada also use Florida Blue. Cook, who looked at it first on the employee side for Monroe County, noticed that it was going to affect the entire community.

“All the right people came to the table and gave it the attention that it needed,” he said. “Baptist had no intention of leaving any residents hanging like this. Obviously, had they stipulated to SHI Keys early on that they needed to take insurances prominent in the community, it would have obviously been much better. But they completely stepped up and put all the emphasis on it and resolved it.”

Patients of SHI Keys physicians in Monroe County will not pay more emergency services out-of-pocket costs than what’s indicated by their insurer. Additionally, per Florida law, emergency care is always delivered to any patient who requires it.

Cook said there tends to be confusion among people over why they still owe money after receiving care.

He said insurance plans still have copays, deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.

“It’s not that you wouldn’t owe anything, and it’s not that people should be offended that they should be paying something,” he said. “It’s the fact that they shouldn’t be paying more than their share.”

Forum brings message for more funding JIM McCARTHY

olly Raschein hasn’t slowed down since terming out as representative for the Florida Keys in the state House. Moving into the private sector with AshBritt following her time in Tallahassee, she recently found her way back into public service, this time as a county commissioner after Gov. Ron DeSantis picked her to fill the late Mike Forster’s term.

In between preparing for her new role in the Keys, Raschein recently had the opportunity to join experts, scientists and other government officials to discuss an issue on the minds of many Floridians — water.

Raschein said there were many takeaways from the 11th annual Florida Water Forum at Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, which was put on by the Associated Industries of Florida from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. Issues surrounding water and environmental policy are critical to Florida’s future, as the forum discussed the connection between sustainable and healthy water sources with the business climate and quality of life in the state.

Out of the forum came a message that time is of the essence as the state deals with serious challenges over water quality. One of the bigger messages she took away was the money needed to deal with everything from Everglades restoration and red tide to building resiliency to deal with sea level rise.

“It’s such a big deal to our state and to the Keys. It was really good to

hear that it’s on the front burner and that it’s still very relevant. But it’s very expensive to fix the water woes we have in our state.”

Southeast Florida must continue to balance water supply with environmental needs — both heavily dependent on Lake Okeechobee. Southwest Florida remains wrapped in a wateruse caution area and remains vulnerable to saltwater seeping into the aquifer. Central Florida is planning for long-term groundwater shortage while grappling with regulations to address the issue, and north Florida continues to to face issues stemming from its abundant, but impacted, springs.

The legislative session last year saw the state investing $640 million to support efforts to ensure state and local communities are prepared to deal with sea level rise. Of that amount, $12.5 million went to a resilient coastline initiative for resilience projects and coral reef protection. And the $500 million the state received from the federal government will go toward implementation of statewide resilience projects through the Statewide Flooding and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan.

With hundreds of millions of dollars invested last session, more is needed to maintain and grow the resiliency and clean water efforts in the state, Raschein acknowledged.

“We’re going to have to do something to switch how we establish more funding, and I’m not a raise-taxes-type person by any means,” Raschein said.

“We have to maybe find a different angle to secure funding.”

Raschein said the forum allowed her to hear about innovative technologies and what’s going on in the private sector to deal with water issues. She also heard from the South Florida Management District and new state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Hamilton. DeSantis appointed the former U.S. Air Force member who served the DEP for 13 years in late August. Raschein also had the opportunity to moderate some discussion during the water forum.

“Obviously, we’re a little behind in Florida. But it was very encouraging that so many things are happening in talking about resiliency, the coral reefs and what we’re doing down here and what happens in north Florida affects things down here.”

Raschein added that water will remain a priority as she enters her new county commission post. The Oct. 20 Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting in Marathon was her first as commissioner.

“Water, and Florida Bay and the reef restoration, was a priority for Mike,” Raschein said. “It’s easy for me to jumpboard off Mike’s commitment and my previous commitment and take it forward.”

Supply is low, demand is high for this Keys delicacy

t’s stone crab season. As of Oct. 15, Keys commercial fishermen and -women have been bringing up their traps, hoping against all hope that they are full of the shellfish with the black-tipped claws. And locals have been on the hunt for them as well, showing up at restaurants this past weekend to order the first catch of the season … and sometimes being disappointed. One Keys Weekly staff member reports that at least one eatery in Marathon was sold out of their stone crab special, and Key Largo Fisheries was sold out of the colossal jumbo crab on Oct. 18. So what gives?

As one commercial fisherman colorfully put it, “I could catch more crabs on Duval Street right now than in the Florida Bay.” Understandably, Bill Kelly, the executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman's Association, expressed himself in a more understated way.

“It’s not overwhelming, I can tell you that,” he told Keys Weekly about the 2021 stone crab harvest’s first weekend.

Gary Graves, vice president at Marathon’s Keys Fisheries Market & Marina, which buys stone crabs from the commercial fisherman then sells them to the public, is a little more blunt.

“The catch is way off in our area,” he said. “It’s very slow. But it’s the second day of season. It’s hard to predict.”

Kelly explained that the stone crab catch has been off since Hurricane Irma, which stripped the mud off the limestone rock prevalent throughout the area.

“We affectionately refer to stone crab as ‘ditch diggers,’ because they live in the mud,” he said. “What happened is we saw these animals move out of the area. A typical year, (the total catch) would be 2.9 million pounds or 3.2. And last year, the number was 2.2 million.”

Tom Hill is the owner/manager of Key Largo Fisheries, which also buys stone crab from commercial fishermen. He says the low catch is due, in part, to the recent calm weather.

“When there's wind, stone crabs move around looking for food,” he explained.

One commercial fisherman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that “I got a 1/4 pound per trap average on my opener. I was hopeful for a full pound per trap average. A good middle of the road average would be 1/2 pound per trap.”

However, the fisherman pointed out one benefit of the low-supply, high-demand situation.

“I’m pleased with the market. My prices are good,” he said.

The fisheries won’t reveal the exact prices that they are buying stone crab for from the fishermen, but Hill of Key Largo Fisheries does admit that the number is “elevated.”

“Supply and demand is the biggest law: When there’s not a lot of supply, the demand is high and prices go up,” he said.

“But the price today, Saturday or yesterday isn’t necessarily the price next Saturday. The first couple of days, people really want stone crabs. After that it goes to what the market is.”

As of press time, local fisheries were selling stone crab claws for a range of $30 to $65 per pound retail, depending upon the size. Which equals: big money.

“Ninety percent of stone crabs harvested in the U.S. come from Florida. In terms of economic value, the stone crab fishery to Monroe County is valued to be $35 million for the price coming off the boat,” said Kelly.

However, he explained that “the turnover” of that $35 million — all the costs related to that catch, such as fuel, boat maintenance and dockage — is six times that amount, $210 million.

“If you take fish, lobsters and stone crab, the value with turnover is $900 million annually. Next to tourism, (commercial fishing) is the second largest economic engine in Monroe County and second largest employer, with 4,500 jobs,” Kelly said.

Even COVID-19 couldn’t dampen consumers’ enthusiasm for the claws with the tender, tasty meat. Though demand was diminished at first by restaurants closing at the beginning of the pandemic, the fisheries got crafty and worked on their internet campaigns so diners could get stone crab delivered to their door.

“The demand was still there for a quality product,” said Kelly. “(Diners) realized shipping charges were offset by the costs they would have paid for cocktails and parking.”

But Hill, who recently sold Key Largo Fisheries for $10.5 million and is assisting with the transition to the new owners, wants locals to keep on coming to their restaurant for their stone crab claws.

“Come on down and get some,” he said. “We’re here to serve the community. They make great Christmas presents. Or add it to Thanksgiving dinner.”

THIS WEEK’S FISHING REPORT Last week the current was off; however, the fishing was good. We managed to put together a nice bite of yellowtail, mutton snapper and vermilion snapper. The vermilions were jumbo, so my clients were very pleased.

There wasn’t much current on the reef either, but we limited out on yellowtail each time.

COAST GUARD RESCUES

Crews assist boat fire, capsized vessel

Earlier in the month, crew members responded to the report of an overturned boat off the waters of Tavernier where three people were rescued on Oct. 9. Petty Officer 2nd Class Logan Venero, coxswain at Coast Guard Station Islamorada, said instances like these are reminders to have proper protective gear when recreating on the water. ““Having the proper protective gear can increase the chances of survivability in the event of an accident,” he said.

Matt James, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Islamorada, extended his appreciation to partner agencies that helped in the case. “Their quick response assisted in the success of the rescue.”

On Oct. 11, Coast Guard Station Islamorada responded to a report of a vessel fire in the vicinity of the Whale Harbor bridge. A boat crew led

by Venero used the response boat’s anchor to pull the burning vessel clear of the bridge and mangroves. Their quick thinking kept the situation from worsening and prevented the fire from affecting traffic on Overseas Highway or spreading to the mangroves.

The crew then took the survivors back to land where one was treated by EMS for minor burns. This incident is a reminder to make sure fire extinguishers are serviceable and accessible in case of emergencies.

t is difficult to tell a Key West or a Key Largo story without telling a Florida Keys story.

What time has done is produce a system of historical roots that connect one island to another.

For instance, when Henry Flagler roared into Key West on Jan. 22, 1912, it was a massive celebration. One of the groups entertaining the crowds and celebrating the moment was Frankie Papy’s band. They were led by a man playing his flute and dressed up as Uncle Sam. He wore a blue, high-top hat with white stars. The red and white tails of his jacket flapped as the band marched on playing “Yankee Doodle.”

Uncle Sam’s name was M. A. Thompson. Thompson is not remembered for his flute playing but his cigars. Like many others around the turn of the century in Key West, he owned and operated a cigar factory. Cigar making as an industry dates back to 1831 when William Hall had a small factory with about 50 employees. By 1890, Key West’s 200 cigar factories were producing approximately 100 million hand-rolled Cuban cigars annually.

In 1915, M.A. Thompson entered the cigar-making game and opened his Thompson Cigar Company. Toward the end of World War I (1917-1918), Thompson sent the troops overseas Thompson cigars, a tradition that would continue from war to war. In September 1919, a Category 4 hurricane passed in the neighborhood of 35 miles south of Key West before crossing the Dry Tortugas. Hurricane winds and storm surge devastated Key West.

As a result, many cigar factory owners decided to pack up and move their operation to Tampa, the “Cigar Capital of the World.” In 1920, the Thompson Cigar Company, too, moved to Tampa. The company was issued Tampa’s first postal

permit in 1929, and it is now considered the oldest mail-order company in the country.

To this day, it is still a flourishing business.

Thompson was also the father of Victor, Robbie, MarBRAD vin, Tony and Rose.

The year before, in 1918, Marvin’s father bought a 40-acre farm in the Tavernier area. According to his youngest son, Tony, who moved up to Planter in 1924, “20 acres of the farm was a producing citrus grove, ten acres was a sapodilla grove and the remainder was coconuts, tamarinds, and dates. He paid $1,000 for the farm with two wooden houses, two concrete cisterns, two boat docks, one Nassau dingy, one packing house for processing the produce of the farm and one storage shack, which the rats and rattlesnakes were using for their convention hall.”

In the 1920s, the Upper Keys were filled with farming communities. Kay Wilkinson wrote a wonderful account of her time living on Key Largo in the 1930s, in the Planter area and later in Tavernier, in her book “It Had To Be You.” She met several of the Thompson brothers and

became close with both Marvin and Tony.

In her book, Tony Thompson writes: “The day that I arrived in Tavernier the farmers looked to me like men from outer space.

The shoes they were wearing had been re-soled from old automobile tire casings.

Being inquisitive, I asked the farmers the purpose of these shoes. They laughed and replied that over the years the sharpedged rocks on the Keys had been devouring the soles of their work shoes and that after many attempts to cope with this problem, this was the definitive answer.”

Kay recorded many of the details of her everyday life in the Keys, but also stories about her friends, including Tony and Marvin. About Marvin, she wrote that he “was very interested in real estate and he decided in 1925 to subdivide the land in Planter. He called it Palma Sola. If you remember back to the good old days, that was kind of the boom time. He had wild dreams that someday it would be a bustling community and he would build it up to have everything you would find in any other small town.”

Though the Florida land boom of the 1920s never materialized for Marvin, his father’s business success afforded him and the rest of the Thompsons the ability to take risks. Marvin was appointed a justice of the peace in 1927. His older brother Robbie served as a local constable. Tony, the youngest brother, would become a published poet.

Should you find yourself driving down Burton Drive and in the direction of Key Largo’s Harry Harris Park, you will be traveling through the old Thompson territory and some rich Florida Keys history. Also, the next time you imagine Henry Flagler’s train roaring into Key West on that glorious day in January, remember to think of M.A. Thompson playing his flute and leading the band in his top hat and tails. “I’m a Yankee Doodle dandy…”

They went to visit the wreck of the Eagle, which sits about 3 miles northeast of Alligator Reef Light and six miles ERIC off the coast of Lower Matecumbe Key. She recently sat down to share her powerful story and information about the upcoming Making Strides in America Cancer Walk this coming Saturday, Oct. 23.

It was six years this past August since my breast cancer was detected in my yearly mammogram, which is why I am an advocate for early detection. I got the postcard in the mail that it was time for my mammogram, and I had gone up as soon as I got the postcard. So, the appointment was actually a month earlier than a typical annual mammogram.

When they see something suspicious in your image, they call you into a big room. I had a biopsy within two days; two days later, I had the diagnosis; and two days later, I had my surgery. Six weeks later, I was in radiation. The doctors responded to my cancer very quickly.

There are many types of breast cancer. And once they diagnose you, you meet with a whole team of doctors — surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and even a geneticist. They are all giving you their opinion on what you should do. My breast cancer was caught early enough that it was able to be treated with surgery and radiation.

After year five, I was able to go back to once-a-year visits instead of every six months.

If you know someone who has been diagnosed or has been going through breast cancer, it’s best to be a good listener. If you are going through the process, find a good doctor you like and trust.

My doctor is Dr. Joseph Collette in Boca Raton, and I trusted what he prescribed 100%.

The process is very overwhelming; try to take someone with you if you can. The doctors are quickly sharing information with you, and you have to revert to what they shared. My husband came with me, and it was essential

to have support. Cancer information, in general, is a lot, and often, you are in a state of shock. So, take notes and, at the very least, put your phone on record.

My best advice is to start your annual mammograms at age 40.

However, as you are doing your self-exams and feel something sooner, get it checked. One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer.

This Saturday, Oct. 23, is the Making Strides in American Cancer Walk. You can walk individually or as a team. Last year, because of COVID-19, we did it as a parade.

This year, since we are still not comfortable being in a large crowd, we came up with a series of neighborhood walks.

Some of the organized walks include Crane Point, and if you show up Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in pink to walk, they will waive the $14.99 park entry fee. Julie Johnson is organizing a group at Duck Key at 8 a.m. There are also walks at Sombrero Beach at 7 a.m. and Coco Plum Beach at 7:30 a.m.

The funds raised go to research and also local programs that help Monroe County residents.

Two such programs are The Hope Lodge and Road to Recovery. These programs are critical; the Road to Recovery Program has volunteers who help patients get to and from appointments, especially since many need to go to Miami for treatment.

I want to end by saying… “Nobody walks this walk alone.” They really don’t. When I went to get my surgery that was one of the most important things a nurse said to me. I said, “You don’t have to walk with me to the surgical center. I’m fine; I’m not even scared.” And she said, “Oh no, I’ll walk with you; no one walks this path alone.”

Scrambled eggs and bacon are a perfectly acceptable dinner. Underwire bras are a thing of the past.

“It’s so bizarre the things you learn while going through this, but I’m the luckiest person you’ll ever meet,” said Key West Realtor Martha Robinson, whose doctor in April “saw a tiny, tiny shadow” on her annual mammogram.

“So I had another mammogram,” she said. “Then I had a biopsy, which wasn’t fun. And then I knew.”

Robinson had breast cancer.

It was stage 1, but an aggressive type that would require surgery to remove the lump, then four chemotherapy infusions given four weeks apart, and finally 20 days of radiation therapy, which she’ll start Nov. 9.

“So I’m still bald, but in a strange way, I like it,” she said. “I never wanted to wear a wig, so my hairdresser shaved my head for me. My amazing friend Kellee Bartley showed up with adorable hats for me. Another friend knit me cotton hats that reduce the perspiration. I have tons of hats now.

One of my best friends sent me pajamas. Brenda Donnelly dropped off some of the best lip balm and skin cream since the chemo dries everything out. I’m surrounded by amazing people. And my boyfriend, Roy Bishop, is an absolute godsend. He cooked me scrambled eggs and bacon for dinner when it was the only thing that sounded remotely appetizing after my first week of chemo. I don’t know what I would have done without him and everyone else. I truly am the most fortunate woman in the world.”

Robinson counts the GenesisCare Oncology Center in Key West among her local miracles. The center provides chemotherapy infusions and radiation treatments on North Roosevelt.

“The treatment I received there was the exact same formula recommended by the most-revered Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa,” Robinson said. “They offered me a second opinion via Zoom, which was incredible. And to know I could

get the exact same treatment protocol here in my hometown among people I know and love was a saving grace. Not to mention the Women’s Imaging Center on 12th Street that’s run by Lower Keys Medical Center. That place is incredible and so supportive. I can’t say enough about everyone.”

For some reason, Robinson had always assumed she’d get breast cancer someday. “So I really wasn’t afraid,” she said. “But I am very glad that it happened now, when I’m 69, instead of when I was younger.”

She’d even been a board member of the Cancer Foundation of the Keys for more than 20 years.

“Mercy Hiller from the oncology center founded that group to help local cancer patients pay rent, mortgages, utility and grocery bills while they were undergoing treatment, and I was always involved.

“I’d been getting annual mammograms since my 40s,” she said.

“I’m 69 now, and I don’t care if you print my age, because I want people to know everything so they’ll get checked regularly, so women will get their mammograms, so men will get a prostate screening and everyone will get skin cancer and colon cancer screenings. They’re so important, because even if the news is bad, it’s manageable when you catch it in time.”

THE CARETAKERS WHO ‘CARRY THE STRESS’ NEED SUPPORT TOO

M

arathon's Armand Messina has been married to his wife, Shayne Messina, for 17 years. When the couple got the phone call in 2016 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, “It was the worst day of my life. And I’m sure it was the worst day of hers,” he told Keys Weekly. “When that phone call comes, your world just stops.”

Thus began a blur of doctor appointments and juggling of work schedules to accommodate Shayne’s treatment plan, which included a lumpectomy, radiation and recuperation. Happily, Shayne has now been cancer-free for six years. But Armand still remembers vividly the fear and helplessness he felt during that time, when his wife was so sick that she couldn’t get out of bed.

“Time stops. You get tunnel vision. I had my businesses and six employees,” said Armand, who owns an electrical contracting business and a hurricane shutter manufacturing business. “I would drive with her to doctors’ appointments in hospitals for surgeries. Spending time with them is important. It’s a very difficult situation, because you don’t know what to say to your spouse. You sure as sh*t don’t want to lose them. From my experience, it was just being there. You just hold their hand. That’s all you can do, but it seems to do the trick.”

Armand is one of the silent heroes: the loved ones — family and friends — who take care of the women and men with breast cancer.

They are most often referred to as caretakers, but the Susan B. Komen organization has another name for them: “co-survivors.” Of necessity, the patient living with breast cancer is the center of all the attention. But the silent heroes play an important role.

“If I didn’t have Wilada, my life would have been so much more difficult,” said Islamorada resident and artist Maxine Trainer. She was cared for by her best friend Wilada Bailey when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019.

She is currently cancer-free after a mastectomy,

chemo and radiation. “We’d be lost without the carers. They’re doing everything, the feeding, the driving, the carrying the burden. They carry the stress that we can’t.”

And carrying the stress can have an emotional cost on the caretakers.

“Emotionally, it's very difficult for men,” said Armand. “You feel helpless. There's no rulebook. There was nobody for me to turn to.”

When asked whom he reached out to for support, Armand said, “No, I did not reach out for support. I’m not that kind of guy. Most guys aren’t. Would it help most people? Probably would. You're the first person that ever asked about that.”

But Armand did seek advice from family.

“My nephew is a doctor, which was helpful. If I had questions I’d go to him.”

Bailey said her support from the First Baptist Church of Islamorada and also from her friends was crucial. She would talk and pray with them, especially during such times as when Maxine lost all her hair.

“When she was having chemo, we were driving from Miami and her hair flew out of her scalp out the car window,” recalled Bailey.

“By the time we got to the Keys from Miami, she was bald. That was really shocking. They say you’re going to lose hair, and until you lose yours, you think you won’t. But it happened.”

Bailey also credits her faith for getting her through this time.

“I did a lot of praying, and I had a lot of faith in God that he was gonna heal her,” she said.

“I feel it was a miracle that she was able to still get up and do her artwork (during her chemo).”

the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. Her mother, Marta A. Gonzalez, lost her battle with breast cancer in 1991. The building that houses 21st Century Oncology is named after Gonzalez, and Hiller was inspired to be Key West’s first radiation therapist due to the lack of the treatment on the island when her mother was battling the disease.

Hiller described tending to her mother’s infected wound from the mastectomy and hearing her mother cry in the shower because she didn’t want to break down in front of Hiller or her father.

“I didn’t reach out for support,” remembered Hiller. “One of the things I did do was I prayed the rosary every day, even when she was in ICU. That’s really what got me through the whole thing. And friends and family were rallying around us.”

Hiller recommends that co-survivors who are currently caring for loved ones with cancer be sure to take time for self-care.

“Take time for yourself. And do not feel guilty about that. Even if it's just a walk, going to lunch with a friend or spending an hour in meditation. You can't take care of anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself.”

But Bailey points out a silver lining.

“I’m grateful that I was able to survive it and be there for Maxine,” she said. “That makes me happy. Don’t be afraid to be a caretaker. It’s very rewarding.”

A

n annual shoebox packing effort is changing the lives of less fortunate children in countries around the world.

In the lead-up to the holiday season, Florida Keys community members stuff boxes with toys, personal care items and crafts for Operation Christmas Child, run by Samaritan's Purse International Relief. For the past 15 years, First Baptist Church of Key Largo, located at MM 99, has served as the spot for donors to drop off their shoe boxes. By the end of the collection effort, a storage container is full of boxes for shipment to children in need.

Recently, the church recognized the milestone with the former co-coordinators of Operation Christmas Child in south Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, Marie and Paul Brischke.

Cindy Smith, church relations coordinator, has taken part in OCC for more than 10 years. In the last 15 years, she said, a total of 34,186 shoeboxes have passed through the church’s doors.

“It’s because of the Brischkes’ passion that my husband, Eric, and I were so involved for a while,” Smith said. “It’s a great cause that impacts so many people.”

From children to seniors, people pack gifts in a shoe box each year for children in need around the world. For parents, the project serves as a teaching moment for their kids about giving.

Churches and groups of all sizes collect boxes from their communities, and

some churches also serve as drop-off locations for shoeboxes the third week of November every year.

Thousands of volunteers serve annually inspecting and preparing shoeboxes for international shipping. Every hour work stops for a few minutes to pray for the children who will receive the boxes. Long before shoe boxes arrive in more than 100 countries, volunteer National Leadership Teams train pastors and community leaders who want to share the message of the Gospel and bless children.

Between the sharing of toys and other goodies, Smith said, an opened shoebox benefits seven people on average. And with the more than 34,000 shoeboxes packed in the Keys and shipped to other countries, that equates more than 239,000 lives positively affected.

With packing underway, Smith said the local OCC team is hoping to send 5,000 shoeboxes from three drop-off locations in the Keys and one in Florida City to other countries. Last year, some 9.1 million boxes were collected and sent around the world. This year, OCC is hoping to send off 9.8 million boxes.

“I know we can do our part by filling a semi with 5,000 boxes. I don’t have a doubt, Smith said.

Collection of shoe boxes will go from Nov. 15 through Nov. 26. In addition to First Baptist Church of Key Largo, Marathon Church of God, 800 74th Street, and First Baptist Church of Big Pine Key, 300 Key Deer Blvd., will serve as drop-off locations for those packing shoeboxes.

Nature walks set in Islamorada The Village of Islamorada presents nature walks led by Susan Kolterman, Florida Keys naturalist. Held twice a month on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10 a.m., the walks can increase knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park. Nature walks also promote responsible stewardship of natural resources. These walks involve brief discussion on the history of the Upper Keys, as well as plant, butterfly and bird trails. The next class is Tuesday, Oct. 26 at Green Turtle Hammock Preserve. There are 15 slots per class. The cost is $7 per class. Lecture delves into history of Island Dolphin Care Keys History & Discovery Center’s lecture series continues Wednesday, Oct. 27, with “Breaths That Count: History of Island Dolphin Care” by founder Deena Hoagland. Guests can attend in person or participate virtually.

The lecture will discuss how, in a desperate search to help her son who was born with a rare heart anomaly, who was then left neurologically impaired after a surgery, Hoagland stumbled upon a small dolphin facility in Key Largo. Her son Joe formed a friendship with a dolphin named Fonzie that ultimately led to his recovery and the formal creation of a not-for-profit organization providing hope, empowerment, and courage to many.

he third annual Constitution Day Celebration, an event sponsored by the Upper Keys League of Women Voter (UKLWV) and the Upper Keys Business and Professional Women (BPW), will be held virtually on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. The event will include a trivia contest with questions taken from the civics test given to people who are applying for naturalization.

At the event, the winners of the student contest will be presented. This year, the students have an opportunity to be creative in more ways. The topic is “How Does the Constitution Affect My Daily Life.” There are two sets of prizes and two categories: a written entry may submit an essay, story, or poem and a visual entry may submit a poster, painting or video.

The Upper Keys League of Women Voters and the Upper Keys Business and Professional Women invite the public to attend virtually and celebrate the Constitution. alloween in paradise means you can expect a lot of oceanthemed festivities mixed in with the usual ghosts and ghouls! In the Upper Keys, there are three awesome events going on to get you into the spooky mood.

Sat. Oct. 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. MarineLab Haunted Lagoon We all love haunted houses and snorkeling, so why not put them together? Join MarineLab’s Haunted Lagoon at 51 Shoreland Dr., Key Largo this weekend to do just that. There will be fun on land and below the surface. Festivities include creepy critters, snacks and refreshments and of course the haunted snorkel through the emerald lagoon.

Snorkel is open to all ages, but critters under 7 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are encouraged to bring their own snorkel gear, but gear is available for any who need free of charge.

The event is free, and the snorkel is $5. Donations support MarineLab’s educational programming throughout the year, bringing schools and groups to learn about the Florida Keys coastal ecosystems.

Saturday, Oct. 30, boat leaves at 1 p.m. Underwater pumpkin carving with Amoray Dive Shop After a year hiatus due to the pandemic, a locals’ favorite event (and possibly the Keysiest Halloween tradition yet) is taking place. Amoray Dive Shop in Key Largo will host their annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving dives.

Check-in starts at 12:30 p.m. and the boat leaves at 1. On the 2-tank trip, which costs $125, enjoy a shallow dive site with lots of sand for the main event. Draw your design on the boat or freehand it when underwater.

Enjoy this Halloween activity while immersed in the most beautiful place in the world — the Florida Keys waters! As a bonus, watch the fish enjoy the pumpkin guts you carve out.

Pumpkins are provided and will be pre-hollowed and weighted to ease descent. Pro tip: bring your own carving tools and think about your design in advance, in case you want to bring special tools.

Minimum Qualifications: Prefer a background in general trade knowledge, which could include janitorial, construction, road work, previous public works employment, equipment operations, or vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Possession of valid State of FL driver’s license (Class C).

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Physical Abilities: Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in moderate to intense work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, shoveling, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 100 pounds). The majority of a normal work day involves standing or walking.

Islamorada farmers market, dolphins’ birthday bash coming up

i friends! Reef the fox here with another weekly edition of “Reef’s Report.” Halloween is coming up and the human mother bought us costumes. Yes, ridiculous, I know.

Who has ever heard of a fox in a costume? I mean I obviously look adorable in it but that’s beside the point. I need to keep up my cool teenage fox persona and a costume just really puts a damper on all of that.

I am sure my mother will be submitting a photo of me REEF in costume for next week’s paper so stay tuned for THE FOX that embarrassment. There are some fun things going on this week so let’s get to it.

Reef is a red fox The Islamorada Farmers Market is back for seathat was saved son two starting this weekend. The Farmers Market from a fur farm.

He now lives in is located at Island Home & Garden, 88720 Overseas Key Largo with Highway, every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to his human, Nicole 3 p.m. for fresh local produce, artisan breads, local Navarro. honey, fresh baked goods, delectable cheeses, nuts and dried fruits and much more. For the first two weeks, they are adding some extra fun with a pumpkin patch, complete with pumpkins available for purchase and great photo ops. Come early with the entire family for free mini pumpkins to decorate on site, while supplies last. I love pumpkins. I didn’t even know what a pumpkin was until mom brought some home for us and I went wild. I hope she takes me down so I can get a free mini pumpkin.

Two of our dolphin neighbors are having a birthday party this Sunday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder in Key Largo. Join Jett, Tug and the rest of the DPMMR family for a free open house and dolphin birthday party.

Jett & Tug are turning 5 years old this fall and they are celebrating by opening their doors to the public for an exciting birthday bash. Free activities include: live dolphin demonstrations, behind the scenes tours, dolphin research demonstrations, interactive education booths, kids activities and more.
