Although gas prices held relatively steady last week, AAA said another increase could be on the way. Crude and gasoline futures prices rose again last week, setting new 2021 highs. The price of U.S. crude increased 4% last week. Friday's settlement of $82.28 per barrel was $3 per barrel more than the week before. Meanwhile, gasoline futures prices increased 12 cents on the NYMEX.

ey West officials faced the reality of outdated city codes and land development rules that may actually contribute to the city’s housing shortage for working residents and Old Town parking shortages.

At the Oct. 19 city commission meeting, lawmakers were faced with two development applications that are allowed by law, but made no provisions for workforce housing or parking.

The owners of 210-216 Duval St. want to turn the former collection of T-shirt and retail shops into a 75- to 150-seat upscale restaurant with four market-rate rental units on the second floor.

Instead of designating 30% of the living units as affordable, the owners opted to pay a $200,000 fee in lieu of creating workforce housing.

After a lengthy discussion with attorney Bart Smith, who represents

the property owners, commissioners voted to postpone their decision until Nov. 3 in the hope that the owners would agree to provide one unit of housing either on-site or off-site.

Bart Smith told the commission, “At this juncture, those units could only be rented for 28 days or longer.

The owners have looked at whether they can obtain transient licenses for the property.”

Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover then asked Smith the question on everyone’s mind: “So, how long until these four new units become transient rentals?”

Smith acknowledged that the process could take 180 days, and added in response to Hoover’s next question, “this is located in the pedestrian corridor, so any change in use doesn’t need parking. That’s how the code is set up.”

The “set up” of city code rankled Commissioner Sam Kaufman, who acknowledged the legality of the proposed project, but said, “I think this application shows how desperately

we need revisions to our land development regulations. Here we have a new 150-seat restaurant that’ll require 40 to 70 new employees with nowhere for them to live and here we have an applicant not even providing one unit of employee housing. … I’m not happy with our code, which is antiquated. And we don’t have a provision to require more (of developers). As a community, when we replicate this over and over, we end up in a dire housing situation.”

Mayor Teri Johnston largely agreed with Kaufman.

“The code needs to be rewritten, and we can’t have a rotating planning staff that does it,” Johnston said. “But the current code says this is allowed. We can’t punish the applicant for abiding by the code as it’s written. But it does need to change.”

Another development proposal at 1020 Margaret St. received many of the same questions and a vote on it was also postponed until Nov. 3.

s of press time, the Oct. 20 Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting was action-packed. Events included the ceremonious swearing in of new commissioner Holly Raschein, a resolution that masks are no longer required to enter government buildings and lots of talk about transportation and traffic accidents.

In an odd coincidence, Commissioner Eddie Martinez arrived late to the meeting, due to having been in a car accident. He explained that his car was rear-ended in front of Sugarloaf School and apologized to the board.

The meeting started on a high note with Holly Raschein, wearing blinged-out stilettos covered in an American flag design, being sworn in as county commissioner. Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Raschein to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners’ District 5 seat on Sept. 24.

Raschein, who served eight years as state representative and serves as government relations director for AshBritt, is filling the seat of Mike Forster, who passed away from COVID-19 on Sept.

The audience burst into a loud round of applause and Mayor Michelle Coldiron said, “I want to welcome you to the dais. This is quite a wonderful moment.”

“Thank you, Madame Mayor,” Raschein replied.

More good news came when Shannon Weiner, director of emergency management, and Bob Eadie, administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, made their presentations about the county’s COVID-19 status.

Weiner said that currently, the average number of new cases per day is 11, “and that has been holding for the month of October.” The number of COVID patients in the hospitals: 3 at Lower Keys Medical Center, 0 at Fishermen’s, and 2 at Mariners. The percentage of the county’s 12 and older population that has been vaccinated is 81 percent.

“That does grow daily,” she said.

“Just for regional perspective, MiamiDade is at 93 percent.”

Next, Eadie said, “We’re really in a good place. … I think your mask mandates or recommendations or requirements can be eased now.”

County administrator Roman Gastesi confessed that he still doesn’t feel comfortable not wearing a mask.

“I’ll continue to wear a mask around people in my office,” he said. “You just don’t know who's vaccinated and who's not.”

“Roman, our messaging should be: You need to be careful. Washing your hands, stay out of crowds, wear a mask when you feel comfortable. But you don’t have to wear it all the time,” Eadie responded. “I think COVID is here to stay. We will deal with it hopefully in the next flu season. There’s a lot of research going into how to make vaccines better.”

Unlike in many local government meetings from August and September, no speakers appeared from the public to speak about masks. A motion to sunset the mask order in county buildings was unanimously passed.

Daniel Iglesias and Antonette Adams, staff from the Florida Department of Transportation District 6, came to present FDOT’s five-year plan of projects for Monroe County.

District 6 includes Miami-Dade and Monroe County.

Adams said that the total funding for District Six is $3.4 billion for five years’ worth of projects. Of that, $328.9 million has been allocated for Monroe County’s projects, including for bridges, aviation and resurfacing.

In a display showing that she means business in her first meeting as county commissioner, Raschein had a suggestion for FDOT’s staff.

“Miami-Dade County gets the lion’s share of that $3.4 billion,” she said. “And I didn’t want to sound ungrateful that our meager $328 million — don’t forget the .9 million — is close to an 85 percent increase from last time. And thank you so much for using those dollars wisely, but considering we have U.S. 1, the lifeblood of our community, maybe we can up that, the ante, next time.”

However, FDOT’s Adams did have some very welcome news which was met with another round of applause: the Old 7 Mile Bridge is slated to be completed in the next four months after several years of renovation.

BRIEFLY Truman Waterfront Farmers Market trick-or-treating Oct. 28 Effective immediately, the Truman Waterfront Farmers Market will adjust its hours on Thursdays from 2 to 7 p.m. to accommodate earlier sunsets. The change helps beat the heat and allows residents to shop after work. The market typically includes cheese, produce, fruit, baked goods, coffee, plants and fresh seafood along with international cuisine available for take-away. SOS Foundation gets new director The SOS Foundation, which feeds thousands of Keys families each month, will welcome a new executive director in 2022. Longtime director Tom Callahan will pass the reins to Emily Nixon while Callahan takes on the role of chief executive officer.

Callahan has overseen SOS since its inception and will remain deeply involved with the organization, but health issues preclude him from maintaining the same level of activity as he has for the past 14 years.

Nixon has served SOS for the past eight years and has developed and administered some of its most successful programs. She will be responsible for the overall administration and day-to-day management of all of SOS. SMART Ride cyclists will arrive in November Cyclists will pedal 167 miles, from Miami to Key West, Nov. 19 and 20 for “The SMART Ride,” a charitable journey that has been called the largest bicycle ride in the southeastern United States.

Now in its 18th year, the fundraising adventure has raised over $12.5 million, with 100% of proceeds distributed among various AIDS service organizations throughout Florida. Beneficiaries include the Florida Keys’ A.H. of Monroe County.

The event typically attracts 400 to 500 solo riders, 250 volunteers and multi-person teams of people ranging in age from 18 to over 70.

Riders depart Friday from Coral Gables, pedaling about 100 miles to Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key. Rest stops are available every 15 to 20 miles. They resume their ride the following morning, riding 65 miles southwest to Key West.

A private closing ceremony will take place at Key West High School.

Post-ride celebrations at local LGBTQ venues are planned throughout Nov. 20.

Registration for the 2021 ride is currently open, with a fee of $135. All participants are required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the event.

A

former military property in Key West recently received a national award, recognizing the efforts and process that turned the Navy property Truman Annex into the new Truman Waterfront Park.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently presented the 2021 National Federal Facility Excellence in Site Reuse Awards to the Navy, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), the City of Key West, Charley Toppino & Sons Inc. and MSE Group for their site reuse efforts in Key West.

The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process allows the U.S. military to declare certain properties as surplus and deed them to the cities or counties in which they’re located, provided the recipients of the land can demonstrate a need, a purpose and a plan for the properties that serve the community’s best interests.

The properties that Naval Air Station Key West closed as part of the BRAC process were redeveloped into Truman Waterfront Park that includes an interactive water feature and playground, turnaround and transit stops for public transportation, an amphitheater, a multipurpose field, dog park, pedestrian promenade, and horse stables for the Key West mounted police. In addition, formerly used Navy land now provides lowincome, affordable housing and former Navy land now is the site of a 106-unit assisted living facility.

“On behalf of the citizens of Key West, I would like to thank our NAS Key West cleanup team whose

efforts allowed us to address two of our most pressing issues; affordable housing and public green space for our residents and guests,” said Key West Mayor Teri Johnston.

“Over the past several years, we have been able to build 212 lowincome housing units, 106 assistedliving units along with a world-class public park thanks to this generous contribution to our community. We remain grateful for this collaboration with NAS Key West.”

In addition to the Truman Annex reuse site, the Navy deeded the city housing at Poinciana Plaza on Duck Avenue, where affordable housing now exists, along with Poinciana Gardens assisted-living center. Before the properties could be used by the city, each required significant environmental mitigation and cleanup efforts due to the past uses of the lands.

“EPA is honored to present the award to the Naval Air Station Key West,” said Carlton Waterhouse, EPA deputy assistant administrator.

“This project clearly demonstrates that creating partnerships to address contaminated property ... and the needs of the surrounding communities lead to successful outcomes for neighborhood revitalization and the environment.”

“This project is a successful demonstration of the success we can achieve by working cooperatively with our federal, state, and local partners to convert a contaminated site into an economic and community asset for Key West,” said John Blevins, EPA’s acting administrator for Region 4.

MAKING HOUSING HAPPEN

CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN ON COLLEGE ROAD

he Key West Housing Authority and the City of Key West have announced that the city’s newest affordable housing project is ready to begin construction. In a joint effort with these two independent agencies and the Monroe County Land Authority, closing documents were finalized late last week.

The contractor, Gulf Keystar, is on site and ready to begin construction on the 103-unit Garden View Apartments on College Road. Each one-bedroom unit will be about 650 square feet, and the project includes parking for 125 cars as well as bike and scooter parking.

According to Housing Authority Director Randy Sterling, 92 of the units will be designated for low-income households; 11 will be reserved for extremely low-income households, of which six will be reserved for residents with special needs.

“The partnership between the city, the housing author-

ity and the land authority is monumental in addressing the affordable housing shortage in this community,” he said. “But we have to recognize the other players, without whom we couldn’t go forward,” including the lender, Truist (formally BB&T), the Florida Housing Finance Corporation and Department of Economic Opportunity.

“This partnership has gotten us where we need to be in providing affordable housing that our community so greatly needs,” said City Manager Patti McLauchlin. “Because of the hard work and cooperation among these independent agencies, our community will benefit, and at no cost to the taxpayer.”

Construction is estimated to take about 18 months.

Garden View Apartments will occupy the land that formerly housed a mosquito control facility, the former SPCA, and Easter Seals.

Supply is low, demand is high for this Keys delicacy

t’s stone crab season. As of Oct. 15, Keys commercial fishermen and -women have been bringing up their traps, hoping against all hope that they are full of the shellfish with the black-tipped claws. And locals have been on the hunt for them as well, showing up at restaurants this past weekend to order the first catch of the season … and sometimes being disappointed. One Keys Weekly staff member reports that at least one eatery in Marathon was sold out of their stone crab special, and Key Largo Fisheries was sold out of the colossal jumbo crab on Oct. 18. So what gives?

As one commercial fisherman colorfully put it, “I could catch more crabs on Duval Street right now than in the Florida Bay.” Understandably, Bill Kelly, the executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fisherman's Association, expressed himself in a more understated way.

“It’s not overwhelming, I can tell you that,” he told Keys Weekly about the 2021 stone crab harvest’s first weekend.

Gary Graves, vice president at Marathon’s Keys Fisheries Market & Marina, which buys stone crabs from the commercial fisherman then sells them to the public, is a little more blunt.

“The catch is way off in our area,” he said. “It’s very slow. But it’s the second day of season. It’s hard to predict.”

Kelly explained that the stone crab catch has been off since Hurricane Irma, which stripped the mud off the limestone rock prevalent throughout the area.

“We affectionately refer to stone crab as ‘ditch diggers,’ because they live in the mud,” he said. “What happened is we saw these animals move out of the area. A typical year, (the total catch) would be 2.9 million pounds or 3.2. And last year, the number was 2.2 million.”

Tom Hill is the owner/manager of Key Largo Fisheries, which also buys stone crab from commercial fishermen. He says the low catch is due, in part, to the recent calm weather.

“When there's wind, stone crabs move around looking for food,” he explained.

One commercial fisherman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that “I got a 1/4 pound per trap average on my opener. I was hopeful for a full pound per trap average. A good middle of the road average would be 1/2 pound per trap.”

However, the fisherman pointed out one benefit of the low-supply, high-demand situation.

“I’m pleased with the market. My prices are good,” he said.

The fisheries won’t reveal the exact prices that they are buying stone crab for from the fishermen, but Hill of Key Largo Fisheries does admit that the number is “elevated.”

“Supply and demand is the biggest law: When there’s not a lot of supply, the demand is high and prices go up,” he said.

“But the price today, Saturday or yesterday isn’t necessarily the price next Saturday. The first couple of days, people really want stone crabs. After that it goes to what the market is.”

As of press time, local fisheries were selling stone crab claws for a range of $30 to $65 per pound retail, depending upon the size. Which equals: big money.

“Ninety percent of stone crabs harvested in the U.S. come from Florida. In terms of economic value, the stone crab fishery to Monroe County is valued to be $35 million for the price coming off the boat,” said Kelly.

However, he explained that “the turnover” of that $35 million — all the costs related to that catch, such as fuel, boat maintenance and dockage — is six times that amount, $210 million.

“If you take fish, lobsters and stone crab, the value with turnover is $900 million annually. Next to tourism, (commercial fishing) is the second largest economic engine in Monroe County and second largest employer, with 4,500 jobs,” Kelly said.

Even COVID-19 couldn’t dampen consumers’ enthusiasm for the claws with the tender, tasty meat. Though demand was diminished at first by restaurants closing at the beginning of the pandemic, the fisheries got crafty and worked on their internet campaigns so diners could get stone crab delivered to their door.

“The demand was still there for a quality product,” said Kelly. “(Diners) realized shipping charges were offset by the costs they would have paid for cocktails and parking.”

But Hill, who recently sold Key Largo Fisheries for $10.5 million and is assisting with the transition to the new owners, wants locals to keep on coming to their restaurant for their stone crab claws.

“Come on down and get some,” he said. “We’re here to serve the community. They make great Christmas presents. Or add it to Thanksgiving dinner.”

‘Nobody walks alone’ Local woman shares her battle

hayne Messina is a 20-year Marathon resident, local business owner of Sunmasters Elite Travel Inc., Upper Keys BPW member and a six-year breast cancer survivor and activist.

She recently sat down to share her powerful story and information about the upcoming Making Strides in America Cancer Walk this coming Saturday, Oct. 23.

It was six years this past August since my breast cancer was detected in my yearly mammogram, which is why I am an advocate for early detection. I got the postcard in the mail that it was time for my mammogram, and I had gone up as soon as I got the postcard. So, the appointment was actually a month earlier than a typical annual mammogram.

When they see something suspicious in your image, they call you into a big room. I had a biopsy within two days; two days later, I had the diagnosis; and two days later, I had my surgery. Six weeks later, I was in radiation. The doctors responded to my cancer very quickly.

There are many types of breast cancer. And once they diagnose you, you meet with a whole team of doctors — surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and even a geneticist. They are all giving you their opinion on what you should do. My breast cancer was caught early enough that it was able to be treated with surgery and radiation.

After year five, I was able to go back to once-a-year visits instead of every six months.

If you know someone who has been diagnosed or has been going through breast cancer, it’s best to be a good listener. If you are going through the process, find a good doctor you like and trust.

My doctor is Dr. Joseph Collette in Boca Raton, and I trusted what he prescribed 100%.

The process is very overwhelming; try to take someone with you if you can. The doctors are quickly sharing information with you, and you have to revert to what they shared. My husband came with me, and it was essential

to have support. Cancer information, in general, is a lot, and often, you are in a state of shock. So, take notes and, at the very least, put your phone on record.

My best advice is to start your annual mammograms at age 40.

However, as you are doing your self-exams and feel something sooner, get it checked. One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer.

This Saturday, Oct. 23, is the Making Strides in American Cancer Walk. You can walk individually or as a team. Last year, because of COVID-19, we did it as a parade.

This year, since we are still not comfortable being in a large crowd, we came up with a series of neighborhood walks.

Some of the organized walks include Crane Point, and if you show up Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in pink to walk, they will waive the $14.99 park entry fee. Julie Johnson is organizing a group at Duck Key at 8 a.m. There are also walks at Sombrero Beach at 7 a.m. and Coco Plum Beach at 7:30 a.m.

The funds raised go to research and also local programs that help Monroe County residents.

Two such programs are The Hope Lodge and Road to Recovery. These programs are critical; the Road to Recovery Program has volunteers who help patients get to and from appointments, especially since many need to go to Miami for treatment.

I want to end by saying… “Nobody walks this walk alone.” They really don’t. When I went to get my surgery that was one of the most important things a nurse said to me. I said, “You don’t have to walk with me to the surgical center. I’m fine; I’m not even scared.” And she said, “Oh no, I’ll walk with you; no one walks this path alone.”

Scrambled eggs and bacon are a perfectly acceptable dinner. Underwire bras are a thing of the past.

“It’s so bizarre the things you learn while going through this, but I’m the luckiest person you’ll ever meet,” said Key West Realtor Martha Robinson, whose doctor in April “saw a tiny, tiny shadow” on her annual mammogram.

“So I had another mammogram,” she said. “Then I had a biopsy, which wasn’t fun. And then I knew.”

Robinson had breast cancer.

It was stage 1, but an aggressive type that would require surgery to remove the lump, then four chemotherapy infusions given four weeks apart, and finally 20 days of radiation therapy, which she’ll start Nov. 9.

“So I’m still bald, but in a strange way, I like it,” she said. “I never wanted to wear a wig, so my hairdresser shaved my head for me. My amazing friend Kellee Bartley showed up with adorable hats for me. Another friend knit me cotton hats that reduce the perspiration. I have tons of hats now.

One of my best friends sent me pajamas. Brenda Donnelly dropped off some of the best lip balm and skin cream since the chemo dries everything out. I’m surrounded by amazing people. And my boyfriend, Roy Bishop, is an absolute godsend. He cooked me scrambled eggs and bacon for dinner when it was the only thing that sounded remotely appetizing after my first week of chemo. I don’t know what I would have done without him and everyone else. I truly am the most fortunate woman in the world.”

Robinson counts the GenesisCare Oncology Center in Key West among her local miracles. The center provides chemotherapy infusions and radiation treatments on North Roosevelt.

“The treatment I received there was the exact same formula recommended by the most-revered Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa,” Robinson said. “They offered me a second opinion via Zoom, which was incredible. And to know I could

get the exact same treatment protocol here in my hometown among people I know and love was a saving grace. Not to mention the Women’s Imaging Center on 12th Street that’s run by Lower Keys Medical Center. That place is incredible and so supportive. I can’t say enough about everyone.”

For some reason, Robinson had always assumed she’d get breast cancer someday. “So I really wasn’t afraid,” she said. “But I am very glad that it happened now, when I’m 69, instead of when I was younger.”

She’d even been a board member of the Cancer Foundation of the Keys for more than 20 years.

“Mercy Hiller from the oncology center founded that group to help local cancer patients pay rent, mortgages, utility and grocery bills while they were undergoing treatment, and I was always involved.

“I’d been getting annual mammograms since my 40s,” she said.

“I’m 69 now, and I don’t care if you print my age, because I want people to know everything so they’ll get checked regularly, so women will get their mammograms, so men will get a prostate screening and everyone will get skin cancer and colon cancer screenings. They’re so important, because even if the news is bad, it’s manageable when you catch it in time.”

THE CARETAKERS WHO ‘CARRY THE STRESS’ NEED SUPPORT TOO

M

arathon's Armand Messina has been married to his wife, Shayne Messina, for 17 years. When the couple got the phone call in 2016 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, “It was the worst day of my life. And I’m sure it was the worst day of hers,” he told Keys Weekly. “When that phone call comes, your world just stops.”

Thus began a blur of doctor appointments and juggling of work schedules to accommodate Shayne’s treatment plan, which included a lumpectomy, radiation and recuperation. Happily, Shayne has now been cancer-free for six years. But Armand still remembers vividly the fear and helplessness he felt during that time, when his wife was so sick that she couldn’t get out of bed.

“Time stops. You get tunnel vision. I had my businesses and six employees,” said Armand, who owns an electrical contracting business and a hurricane shutter manufacturing business. “I would drive with her to doctors’ appointments in hospitals for surgeries. Spending time with them is important. It’s a very difficult situation, because you don’t know what to say to your spouse. You sure as sh*t don’t want to lose them. From my experience, it was just being there. You just hold their hand. That’s all you can do, but it seems to do the trick.”

Armand is one of the silent heroes: the loved ones — family and friends — who take care of the women and men with breast cancer.

They are most often referred to as caretakers, but the Susan B. Komen organization has another name for them: “co-survivors.” Of necessity, the patient living with breast cancer is the center of all the attention. But the silent heroes play an important role.

“If I didn’t have Wilada, my life would have been so much more difficult,” said Islamorada resident and artist Maxine Trainer. She was cared for by her best friend Wilada Bailey when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019.

She is currently cancer-free after a mastectomy,

chemo and radiation. “We’d be lost without the carers. They’re doing everything, the feeding, the driving, the carrying the burden. They carry the stress that we can’t.”

And carrying the stress can have an emotional cost on the caretakers.

“Emotionally, it's very difficult for men,” said Armand. “You feel helpless. There's no rulebook. There was nobody for me to turn to.”

When asked whom he reached out to for support, Armand said, “No, I did not reach out for support. I’m not that kind of guy. Most guys aren’t. Would it help most people? Probably would. You're the first person that ever asked about that.”

But Armand did seek advice from family.

“My nephew is a doctor, which was helpful. If I had questions I’d go to him.”

Bailey said her support from the First Baptist Church of Islamorada and also from her friends was crucial. She would talk and pray with them, especially during such times as when Maxine lost all her hair.

“When she was having chemo, we were driving from Miami and her hair flew out of her scalp out the car window,” recalled Bailey.

“By the time we got to the Keys from Miami, she was bald. That was really shocking. They say you’re going to lose hair, and until you lose yours, you think you won’t. But it happened.”

Bailey also credits her faith for getting her through this time.

“I did a lot of praying, and I had a lot of faith in God that he was gonna heal her,” she said. “I feel it was a miracle that she was able to still get up and do her artwork (during her chemo).”

mother, Marta A. Gonzalez, lost her battle with breast cancer in 1991. The building that houses 21st Century Oncology is named after Gonzalez, and Hiller was inspired to be Key West’s first radiation therapist due to the lack of the treatment on the island when her mother was battling the disease.

Hiller described tending to her mother’s infected wound from the mastectomy and hearing her mother cry in the shower because she didn’t want to break down in front of Hiller or her father.

“I didn’t reach out for support,” remembered Hiller. “One of the things I did do was I prayed the rosary every day, even when she was in ICU. That’s really what got me through the whole thing. And friends and family were rallying around us.”

Hiller recommends that co-survivors who are currently caring for loved ones with cancer be sure to take time for self-care.

“Take time for yourself. And do not feel guilty about that. Even if it's just a walk, going to lunch with a friend or spending an hour in meditation. You can't take care of anyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself.”

But Bailey points out a silver lining.

“I’m grateful that I was able to survive it and be there for Maxine,” she said. “That makes me happy. Don’t be afraid to be a caretaker. It’s very rewarding.”

t was 17 years in the making, but photographer Tom Flip finally collected dozens of his photos into a book.

“Flip 2” is a tasteful and artful collection of nude and semi-nude Key West women, all posing in Lower Keys backyards.

“There are moms, bartenders, teachers; everyone is represented,” said Flip, whose full name is Thomas Filipkowski.

A book release party will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 at Effusion Gallery, 701 Duval St. The same night, the gallery will celebrate the opening of a photography exhibit by Flip featuring all manner of Key West photos.

“Tom Flip is a central figure in Key West’s underground creative scene,” said gallery

owner Brandie Sager. “It’s a scene that moves separately from the tourist industry we're so dependent on, while also quietly feeding it the fresh supply of magic it needs to thrive.

Tom is endlessly fascinated by people, loves collaborating and is always ready to push the envelope. He's punk as hell and knows not to apologize for it.

“This body of work reflects all of that. There is no pretense, no tacky veneer begging to be liked by the masses. It's an unedited, honest and raw expression of what this creative icon gets up to when no one is looking. And he's brought his weird and wonderful friends along for the ride.

y last two articles have been on smoking cessation and potluck, so why not go for the hat trick and talk about another of my pet peeves (pun completely intended)…dog poop.

As you may know from other articles, Mindy and I have two decent-sized dogs, Bella the poodle, who thinks she is a person, and Copper the rescue Chesapeake Bay mutt, who pretty much thinks he is a brown dog. They get morning and evening walks, as well as outside trips about every two hours. They consistently do their business about twice a day, occasionally less; some days they are unstoppable.

Our neighborhood has a mix of full timers, snowbirds and rentals, like most down here, and while the majority are responsible dog owners, we do have the occasional rotten egg who thinks their dog’s **** doesn’t stink. Meanwhile, our and other neighborhood dogs do what dogs do, and try to get as close to that stranger poo for a good sniff, and this is the point of today’s article.

Spoiler Alert! Dog poop has disease-causing organisms in it and is also a major contributor to water contamination. Mind-blowing scientific facts are about to be presented, hold onto your leashes.

Dogs have a tendency to get parasites, including worms (round, hook and whipworms to be specific) and also can carry other parasites like giardia or cryptosporidia. No big deal you say, around here, between the heat and the rain, dog poo breaks down quickly and disappears. Did you know the eggs from these parasites can exist in the soil for years? Nothing like walking barefoot through the roundworm egg farm, or having your toddler not wash their hands well after playing

outside. For most dogs, and humans, the parasites cause GI-type symptoms – vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss (not a recommended DR. Dog poo, just like people poo, also contains lots of bacteria, and many of these infect humans as well. E. Coli, campylobacter and salmonella are just some of the bad actors that can be shared between dogs and humans.

Seriously though, how much poo can dogs make? Supposedly, the 70 million dogs in the U.S. produce over 10 million tons of poo annually (that’s 50+ times the amount of gold ever mined). The poo that is allowed to “dissolve” quickly enters the water table and contributes nutrients that support harmful algae, leading to fish/wildlife kills.

How do we fix this? It’s pretty easy. Make sure your pet sees the vet once a year and takes a preventive anti-parasitic; secondly, go to your local pet store, buy some biodegradable bags, and pick up your dog’s poop! Have a great week, and be healthier today than you were yesterday!

hat happened to the parrots that used to fly around Old Town and eat mangoes?

— Banyan Tree Amy I’m not sure when you moved here, but when I came in 1991, a small flock of parrots roamed Key West. I have a hazy memory of them landing noisily in an Emma Street tree and waking me from a pretty good nap. I wasn’t yet a bird geek, so I can’t recall with any clarity their field marks, number, species, or even if they MARK were all the same species. I just remember a lot of green HEDDEN feathers and thinking, “Oh, I live in the tropics now.”

They seem to thrive and contain themselves in urbanized areas, possibly because of all the imported landscaping plants. More than 50 species of exotic parrots are currently breeding in the Miami area. I’ve seen hyacinth macaws in Coral Gables and mitred parakeets in Kendall. A small flock of monk parakeets occasionally hangs out in Founders Park in Islamorada.

So what happened to that Key West flock? Odds are it never got large enough to form a breeding colony, and its members either aged out, couldn’t find the right food, caught diseases or were taken out by predators such as hawks and falcons.

If you look carefully at the following formula: ∀(x, y ∈ A ∪ B; x ≠ y) x² − y² ≥ 0, you will quickly begin to despair at how your math skills have atrophied in recent years. Thankfully, Peter Tate’s book “The Swallow” reveals that scientists who track flying barn swallows by radar have learned they fly, on average, 17 mph in a crosswind, 16.7 mph with a headwind, and 22.2 mph with a tailwind. The fastest speed they recorded for a swallow was 35 mph, though that citation did not note wind direction.

Despite unproven rumors of them dabbling in coconut haulage, all barn swallows are, by nature, unladen (unless you consider the unbridled joy with which they rip around the world a metaphorical burden). Even so, I believe the real-world measurements of velocity would remain largely consistent.

KEY WEST ART AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY ELEVATES AND CELEBRATES RENEWED PARADE GROUNDS

T

he oceanside parade grounds of Fort East Martello are now high and dry, thanks to a Monroe County restoration and enhancement project in collaboration with Key West Art and Historical Society. The newly completed $530,000 effort — supported by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, benefactors Anne McKee, her husband the late Ross McKee, the late Margo Golan, Key West’s Save A Tree, and many other individual donors — ensures that the spacious parade grounds will be usable for a variety of outdoor events. Those events include education programs, private venue rentals, and concerts with pop-up stages, including the upcoming Thursday, Nov. 4 free-for-locals “G. Love” concert.

The concert is a prelude to the COAST Is Clear Arts & Music Festival co-produced

by COAST Projects, featuring Grammynominated headliners Black Pumas set for Saturday, Dec. 4 — and a celebration of the new space.

Or rather, an old space made new.

Located at the edge of the Civil War-era fort, original grounds centered on military operations and training space for soldiers who, ironically, never saw combat. When the fort continued to crumble post-World War II, society members and volunteers restored it to its original design and in 1951 opened the first museum in the Florida Keys. Three decades later, Ross and Anne McKee and Margo Golan led efforts to create East Martello Park on what is now officially known as the Fort East Martello Parade Grounds — landing space for the society’s Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade, launch for Zombie Bike Ride, and multiple KWAHS community events throughout the year.

The 9-month project increased the ground elevation up to four feet in areas, installed drainage systems and ground swell, sod, a new irrigation system, upgraded electrical panels and added lights and utility poles and a fence around the perimeter.

Additionally, over 32 biodiverse, salt-tolerant native plants and trees were planted, including gumbo limbo, jasmine, frangipani, satin leaf, wax myrtle, coral bean, royal poinciana, mahogany, sapodilla, mango, and Key and Spanish lime trees whose fruit the society plans to use eventually for a food event with a local partner to promote the history of local food production, much in the vein of the annual Conch Revival Picnic. The third and final improvement phase will focus on preservation efforts for the fort’s courtyard, which also hosts many of the society’s family-friendly events and educational programs.

“Projects like these rejuvenate the community’s pride in their historic properties,” said Cary Knight, director of Monroe County Projects. “As the project reduces flooding and pooling around the Fort, it helps to preserve the building and property for future generations.”

On Nov. 4, the society will honor former and current donors with a private ribboncutting ceremony on the grounds that they’ve been so passionate about preserving. Later that evening, KWAHS and COAST Projects invite the community to a free concert with performances by hip-hop blues singer and guitarist Garrett Dutton, founder and front man of acclaimed band G. Love and Special Sauce, joined by skate-rock musician Chuck Treece and local favorite Cayman Smith Martin. Admission is free with Monroe County ID; $20 for non-locals. All concertgoers, whether free or paid, must preregister by noon on Nov. 3 at www.coastisclearfest. com.

On Dec. 4, the celebration continues with the 2021 COAST Is Clear Music & Arts Festival, an all-day, family-friendly event with an artist’s market, food vendors, cash bar, and live music starring headliners Black Pumas and featuring national and international favorites Phosphorescent, Rayland Baxter, Langhorne Slim, Liz Cooper, and SUSTO, interspersed with performances by locallybased favorites.

The pair are also co-teachers, working out of the same room where they teach English, an uncommon arrangement in most schools.

Gary and Nancy, who are now 56 years old, met 38 years ago at the University of South Florida, he from St. Petersburg, she from Belmar, New Jersey. At the end of their first year at USF, they eloped and embarked on travels that would take them to numerous cities and countries, including teaching at the American School in Saudi Arabia.

Along the way, both earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

They spent eight years at three different schools in Saudi Arabia.

“Besides teaching, we co-coached several sports there,” said Gary Curry.

“Basketball, badminton, table tennis.

The Indians and Pakistanis love their sports, particularly table tennis.”

Gary has been playing tennis “forever,” he said. “My father owned a tennis center in St. Pete.”

Soon, Nancy was playing as well, learning at the family center in Deland, Florida. “If I wanted to be part of the Curry family, I had to play tennis,” she told me recently as the three of us chatted at the high school.

“Working together as co-teachers is a popular model elsewhere, just not in Key West; also not by husbands and wives,” Gary said. But they convinced the Key West people in charge that

they could go in that direction. So they were hired as co-teachers at Horace O’Bryant Middle School, where they spent five years. They're now into their second year at the high school.

Since their English class size has enlarged as they split the duties, they earn salaries that are commensurate with having classes of their own.

When Paul Findlay was unable to continue as coach of the boys and girls tennis teams this year, the Currys applied and were hired as co-coaches who split the duties. Gary instructs the boys and Nancy the girls. With tennis, a spring sport, their seasons will begin in mid-February. They’ll also be switching teams when it is deemed valuable.

They are also teaching English as a second language. “We only speak English, so we don’t give the students a crutch,” said Gary. They have also cotaught math, science, reading, physical education and gifted children.

“But we are learning Spanish,” Nancy offered. “We mix them up, teaching separate groups.

"There’s a lot of movement.”

Since they live together and work together, both have found other outlets. “I like to paint and I like to say I’m learning to play the piano,” said Gary.

“I like to write,” said Nancy. “I play the guitar and the trumpet.”

But come February, this team will be focused on the tennis court.

CONCHS GRAB DISTRICT RUNNER-UP

Key West High’s football team took the runner-up spot in District 16-5A on Friday night by beating Jackson, 31-6, in Miami. The Conchs under coach John Hughes completed their district schedule with a 2-1 record behind unbeaten Killian with Jackson and St. Brendan trailing the Conchs. Overall, Key West is 4-3.

Senior quarterback Preston Herce and junior running back James Reynolds each topped 100 yards rushing, with Herce at 109 on 18 carries and Reynolds 101 on 11 carries. Herce completed 3 of 6 passes with touchdowns of 32 and 22 yards to Michael Cates. Reynolds and sophomore Clerf Alexandre also scored a touchdown. Placekicker Darwin Correa added a 32-yard field goal and four extra points. Key West returns to the Backyard field at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, to take on Surge Academy of Hollywood.

erhaps it’s a good thing that a cardiologist is one of the minds behind the new haunted house on Duval Street. On a recent Monday evening, delighted, but authentic, screams from inside the “Haunted Hallways” could be heard on the street outside. And the scares start right on the sidewalk, where masked ambassadors lure people inside the dark hallway at 618 Duval St. “We wanted to do something fun for the community, something to bring locals and kids downtown,” said Dr. Bruce Boros, who worked with Nelson Sawyer of Powerhouse Construction & Management on the project. “In three days, Nelson and his team got this whole thing up and running, and we have high school students as the actors inside. It’s really been a lot of fun.”

Haunted Hallways opened Oct. 16 and runs nightly from 4 to 11 p.m. through Halloween. All ages are welcome. Adults will be properly petrified by suspense-building dark hallways and costumed characters. Younger kids receive a glow-in-the-dark necklace at the start to alert the actors not to scare them too badly.

Haunted Hallways is the first of many community-oriented projects that Boros has planned for his new business at 618 Duval St. The large and meandering property with entrances of Duval and Angela

streets, was formerly the home of Cowboy Bill’s country bar and mechanical bull.

The new entertainment center will be called the Key West Emporium, and already includes the popular Kaya restaurant, the brainchild of Scott Taylor.

Additional plans will include a sports bar, a karaoke bar, a private VIP lounge with dedicated drink service that can be rented nightly, and themed musical and dance nights, Boros said.

“We’re thinking of a Latin and Salsa night, a tropical daiquiri bar, a night of music, dancing and sports from the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe, tons of every sporting event on several televisions, and then we want to do some things during the day for kids and families.

“The whole idea is to bring locals back to the central Duval Street area,” Boros said. “Duval Street was traditionally the city’s main street and social center. And there’s no reason that element has to be sacrificed to tourism. We want to engage the community during the day and create an ideal mix for locals and tourists at night.”

While the new Key West Emporium takes shape in the coming months, Haunted Hallways offers the perfect reason to rediscover Duval Street this Halloween.

Convenient parking is available a block away at the fire station lot on Angela and Simonton streets — and it’s free for locals with a resident parking pass.

I

t is difficult to tell a Key West or a Key Largo story without telling a Florida Keys story.

What time has done is produce a system of historical roots that connect one island to another.

For instance, when Henry Flagler roared into Key West on Jan. 22, 1912, it was a massive celebration. One of the groups entertaining the crowds and celebrating the moment was Frankie Papy’s band. They were led by a man playing his flute and dressed up as Uncle Sam. He wore a blue, high-top hat with white stars. The red and white tails of his jacket flapped as the band marched on playing “Yankee Doodle.”

Uncle Sam’s name was M. A. Thompson. Thompson is not remembered for his flute playing but his cigars. Like many others around the turn of the century in Key West, he owned and operated a cigar factory. Cigar making as an industry dates back to 1831 when William Hall had a small factory with about 50 employees.

By 1890, Key West’s 200 cigar factories were producing approximately 100 million hand-rolled Cuban cigars annually.

In 1915, M.A. Thompson entered the cigar-making game and opened his Thompson Cigar Company. Toward the end of World War I (1917-1918), Thompson sent the troops overseas Thompson cigars, a tradition that would continue from war to war. In September 1919, a Category 4 hurricane passed in the neighborhood of 35 miles south of Key West before crossing the Dry Tortugas. Hurricane winds and storm surge devastated Key West.

As a result, many cigar factory owners decided to pack up and move their operation to Tampa, the “Cigar Capital of the World.” In 1920, the Thompson Cigar Company, too, moved to Tampa. The company was issued Tampa’s first postal

permit in 1929, and it is now considered the oldest mail-order company in the country.

To this day, it is still a flourishing business.

Thompson was also the father of Victor, Robbie, Marvin, Tony and Rose.

All but a few of the Skunk Ape. its former residents had moved closer to the railroad and the growing Tavernier community.

The year before, in 1918, Marvin’s father bought a 40-acre farm in the Tavernier area. According to his youngest son, Tony, who moved up to Planter in 1924, “20 acres of the farm was a producing citrus grove, ten acres was a sapodilla grove and the remainder was coconuts, tamarinds, and dates. He paid $1,000 for the farm with two wooden houses, two concrete cisterns, two boat docks, one Nassau dingy, one packing house for processing the produce of the farm and one storage shack, which the rats and rattlesnakes were using for their convention hall.”

In the 1920s, the Upper Keys were filled with farming communities. Kay Wilkinson wrote a wonderful account of her time living on Key Largo in the 1930s, in the Planter area and later in Tavernier, in her book “It Had To Be You.” She met several of the Thompson brothers and became close with both Marvin and Tony.

In her book, Tony Thompson writes: “The day that I arrived in Tavernier the farmers looked to me like men from outer space.

The shoes they were wearing had been re-soled from old automobile tire casings.

Being inquisitive, I asked the farmers the purpose of these shoes. They laughed and replied that over the years the sharpedged rocks on the Keys had been devouring the soles of their work shoes and that after many attempts to cope with this problem, this was the definitive answer.”

Kay recorded many of the details of her everyday life in the Keys, but also stories about her friends, including Tony and Marvin. About Marvin, she wrote that he “was very interested in real estate and he decided in 1925 to subdivide the land in Planter. He called it Palma Sola. If you remember back to the good old days, that was kind of the boom time. He had wild dreams that someday it would be a bustling community and he would build it up to have everything you would find in any other small town.”

Though the Florida land boom of the 1920s never materialized for Marvin, his father’s business success afforded him and the rest of the Thompsons the ability to take risks. Marvin was appointed a justice of the peace in 1927. His older brother Robbie served as a local constable. Tony, the youngest brother, would become a published poet.

Should you find yourself driving down Burton Drive and in the direction of Key Largo’s Harry Harris Park, you will be traveling through the old Thompson territory and some rich Florida Keys history. Also, the next time you imagine Henry Flagler’s train roaring into Key West on that glorious day in January, remember to think of M.A. Thompson playing his flute and leading the band in his top hat and tails. “I’m a Yankee Doodle dandy…”

We all know the game of Monopoly, highstakes real estate deals brokered on a living room floor somewhere on a rainy day. We all had older brothers who cheated little sisters, hid money under the board or traded us railroads for more valuable property. But oh, the nostalgia.

And now the traditional game’s Atlantic City addresses have been replaced by familiar Key West businesses and locales.

Casey Arnold, who owns Key West Scavenger Hunt and works at the Conch Republic Seafood Co., recently celebrated the release of his Key West version of Monopoly, complete with licensing agreements from Hasbro.

Arnold celebrated the game release — and his birthday — with a party on Oct. 15.

“The actual pallet of games didn’t arrive at my storage unit until 45 minutes before this party,”

a stressed-out but relieved Arnold told the Keys Weekly at the gathering. “But this has been great. The game looks fantastic and sales have been really brisk.”

Each color-coded property section on the game board represents a local business or agency, including Realtors, bars and restaurants, tours and attractions, construction companies and others.

Arnold kept the Key West “occupants” of Boardwalk and Park Place a secret until the game was released. What are the dark blue properties on the Key West board? Charley Toppino & Sons inhabit the usual Boardwalk and Monroe Concrete is on Park Place.

The metal game pieces add further local flair. Instead of a horse, a top hat, an iron, a thimble and a car. There’s a manatee, a rooster, a flip flop, a conch shell, a lobster boat and Kermit, the Key lime pie master.

Games retail for $50 and are for sale at the Conch Republic Seafood Co. and various other locations around town.

Islamorada farmers market, dolphins’ birthday bash coming up

i friends! Reef the fox here with another weekly edition of “Reef’s Report.” Halloween is coming up and the human mother bought us costumes. Yes, ridiculous, I know. Who has ever heard of a fox in a costume? I mean I obviously look adorable in it but that’s beside the point. I need to keep up my cool teenage fox persona and a costume just really puts a damper on all REEF of that. I am sure my mother will be submitting a photo of me in costume for next week’s THE FOX paper so stay tuned for that embarrassment.

Rolling Project Odyssey helps veterans with invisible war wounds

H

arleys and dolphins aren’t exactly a natural pairing, but through Wounded Warrior Project’s Rolling Project Odyssey, 14 veterans were able to experience the effects of the marine mammals through in-water interactive programs at Dolphin Research Center. Sponsored by Harley-Davidson since 2015, Rolling Project Odyssey is a group motorcycle riding experience intended to aid warriors as they build camaraderie and recover from visible and invisible wounds of war.

Meeting in Marathon from locations around Florida and southern Georgia, the group spent the week of Oct. 11-15 riding to various landmarks in the Florida Keys while completing workshops and team building activities.

Thursday’s stop included a visit with the flippered family at DRC. In addition to swimming with dolphins during an in-water dolphin encounter, the group also got the chance to meet Jax, a rescue dolphin who survived and was rehabilitated after losing large pieces of his fins and flippers to bull shark bites at a young age. “It was just phenomenal,” said Bill Thomas, a former police officer and Iraq veteran.

Sometimes, she can serve about 60 in one night. “My lemon drops are awesome. We’re a late night bar and don’t do many fancy cocktails.” Her shots may not be fancy, but she definitely creates them with care. “It’s muddled lemons, simple syrup and Tito’s, and I shake it like hell.
