TRACKING COVID-19 DEATHS 63 reported in Keys since pandemic broke out JIM McCARTHY

eaths related to COVID-19 infections stood at 63 in Monroe County on Aug. 31. Of those deaths, two were among individuals who were vaccinated, per the county’s top health official.

Bob Eadie said the Keys have seen an uptick in deaths since a spike in COVID-19 cases shortly after the Fourth of July. Of the total deaths, the majority, if not all, had underlying health conditions.

“The thing to remember is those conditions were managed well, and they wouldn’t have died on that day were it not for the COVID infection,” he said. “I don't want to minimize the fact that COVID is really dangerous, and for people who just say, ‘They would have died anyway,’ it’s disingenuous in the sense that they could have lived longer.”

A final case count report provided by the local health department to the public on May 21 reported 49 deaths from the first confirmed COVID-19-related death on April 2, 2020. That means 14 deaths from COVID-19 have been confirmed from late May to the end of August.

While May 21 marked the local health department’s last daily case count update, people were still able to view deaths, new cases and other data by county on the Florida Health Department’s website. By June 4, publishing of COVID-19-related deaths by county came to an end.

Today, weekly reports issued by the Florida Health Department, out of Tallahassee, every Friday detail total deaths statewide.

Between Aug. 20 and Aug. 26, the state reported 389 deaths. Case and vaccination data is provided by county further down in the report, but deaths by county aren’t shown.

When asked if he received any explanation from the Florida Health Department in Tallahassee behind the move, Eadie said, “I can answer that in one word. No.” Eadie added the local health department keeps track of deaths from daily census reports from hospitals.

“They will also report any deaths in the previous 24 hours,” he said.

The Weekly reached out to the State Health Office of Communications to inquire about COVID-19-related death data and how many deaths since a surge was seen in the Keys after July 4. No response was received before press time.

Statewide, the health department’s latest weekly report, issued Aug. 27, shows 43,979 COVID19-related deaths out of the more than 3.1 million cases since the pandemic broke out. That’s a case fatality rate of 1.4%.

Disease Control on Aug. 31 reported 230 deaths in the last seven days and a total death count in Florida of 44,561.

The Florida Health Department and CDC have gone back and forth in recent weeks over the way case and death data is being reported.

Bob Eadie New COVID-19 infections in the state appear to be plateauing, with 151,749 confirmed cases reported between Aug. 20 and Aug. 29. The week before saw 150,236 cases.

In Monroe County, 386 new COVID-19 cases were reported. That’s down from the previous week when 491 new infections were seen. A little more than 700 shots were administered to bring the total number vaccinated to 52,347, or 76% of the county population.

“There’ve been a lot of conversations about people who’ve been vaccinated and who have been hospitalized or come down with a serious case. Those are really small compared to the number of people actually vaccinated,” Eadie said. “No vaccination is going to be 100% effective for the population, but it’s been really effective.”

Baptist Health South Florida said it was caring for five patients with COVID-19 in Monroe County on Aug. 31. Throughout its network from Miami to the Keys, 656 patients were being treated. Gina Halley-Wright, spokeswoman for Baptist, said an overwhelming majority of positive patients at the hospitals are unvaccinated.

“We have seen a steady decline in the number of COVID cases across the system,” she said. “We are hopeful and continue to encourage the community to remain vigilant.”

Lower Keys Medical Center remained in yellow status on Aug. 31. Thirty-six COVID-19-positive patients were being cared for, of whom eight were in intensive care and seven receiving ventilator care.

Those with compromised immune systems are beginning to receive a booster shot. Eadie said there’s still some controversy whether a booster shot is needed for everyone with the vaccine’s effectiveness. But he said the CDC determined that it’s a good idea to get one.

“And I would agree,” he said. “Those who have real issues concerning their immune system, they can go to any of the pharmacies and fill out a form, make appointments online and receive the vaccine.”

13 Cuban migrants reach Key West, but will likely be returned MANDY MILES

hirteen Cuban migrants landed early Tuesday morning near Key West’s Higgs Beach, adding to the increasing number of illegal migrants trying to escape food, supply and healthcare shortages in the island nation that has been wracked by COVID. The 2017 ending of the United States’ so-called “wet-foot/dry-foot policy” that had allowed Cubans to remain in the country if they landed on American soil means most migrants are returned to their island nation via Coast Guard cutter.

“Most Cubans who want to try for a U.S. visa now have to go to embassies in other countries — and getting there is almost impossible due to sharp cuts in air traffic during the pandemic,” the Los Angeles Times reported on Aug. 10.

“Most can’t afford tickets anyway

unless relatives can front them the money. That has pushed many Cubans to launch themselves into the sea on small boats or rafts to attempt the dangerous crossing of the Florida Straits.

“The U.S. Coast Guard said recently it has intercepted 595 Cubans at sea since the current fiscal year started Oct. 1. That’s larger than any full fiscal year since 2017. … It’s still small in comparison with the nearly 5,400 halted at sea in 2016 or the dramatic crises of 1994-95 and 1980, when Cuba’s government temporarily stopped trying to block departures and tens of thousands set out en masse.

Thousands died at sea.”

It’s also still far smaller than the current flow of those who have somehow made their way to the continent and worked their way north. The U.S. Border Patrol had recorded 26,196 Cubans trying to enter the U.S. illegally between Oct. 1 and June 30, most by land, often through Mexico, the L.A. Times article states.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY? Key West building official wants proof that condo is ‘safe for habitation’

A

New Town condo association has until Friday, Sept. 3 to prove its building is "safe for habitation.”

The city of Key West's chief building official, Raj Ramsingh, sent a letter to Santa Clara Condominium Association on Friday, Aug. 27, demanding confirmation from the association’s engineer "that all or part of the building is safe for habitation.”

The 111-unit Santa Clara complex at 3312 Northside Dr. "is obviously in serious need of repairs, to the extent that I don't think the repairs can be completed safely while the building is occupied," Ramsingh wrote on Aug. 27.

"I do not want to condemn this building because doing so would necessarily displace so many residents, but if I have to, I will."

The letter states that on Aug. 25, Ramsingh received an engineering report from JL Sanders that was dated nearly a month earlier, on July 28.

In that report, JL Sanders describes a rapidly deteriorating building and an estimated $8.8 million of repairs that are immediately necessary.

The condo association’s board is holding an emergency meeting on Thursday, Sept. 2 to discuss the city’s latest letter. The board held a previous Zoom meeting with unit owners earlier in August to discuss the building’s deteriorating condition.

“We’ve been acutely aware of issues with our building,” said Travis Doll, a unit owner and vice president of the condo association’s board. “But it’s now gotten to the point where bigger repairs are needed and we’ve started talking with banks about getting an association loan for the $8.8 million.”

In order to repay that loan, condominium owners would have to pay $80,000 to $90,000 per unit, or an additional $600 to $650 per month in condo fees, Doll said.

Those fees currently range between $600 and $860 per month depending on the size of the unit. The fees bring in about $800,000 a year, prompting some owners to question what the property managers have been spending money on each year.

“We’ve reiterated with the ownership at large and with the city that we have completed major projects every

year for the last several years,” Doll said. “Those projects and the increasing costs of construction and labor in Key West are where the owners’ money and dues are going.”

One unit owner who asked not to be identified said they are no longer staying at the unit they own.

“I’m afraid we are in dire straits of a building collapse,” the owner told the Keys Weekly, while pointing out a crumbling stairwell, a laundry room ceiling propped up by steel beams and exposed rebar in several places. “"We've been pressuring our property management company, ICAMCO, to expedite the repairs to our more urgent projects, like those concerns mentioned by the city,” Doll said.

"We've recently learned from a few of our main service vendors that ICAMCO has delayed certain projects that the board had already approved. Additionally, just a few days before the city’s visit and the recent letter from the city, we requested updates from ICAMCO on the prioritized projects.”

Property manager Daniel Garcia, who works for ICAMCO property management company, did not return multiple phone calls and text messages from the Keys Weekly.

Doll said on Sept. 1 that Santa Clara had just received notice that ICAMCO was canceling its management contract with Santa Clara.

“Obviously everyone’s really nervous, given the tragedy in Miami,” Doll told the Keys Weekly. “Surfside has spooked everyone, but that is very much not the case with Santa Clara.

We have no parking underneath and no pool leaking under the building.

The engineers are using some scary language to spur a sense of urgency, and we’re stepping into high gear.

“The city has said they’ll help us with expediting permits,” Doll said.

“The last thing the city wants to do is displace so many owners and tenants given the housing situation in Key West.”

Ramsingh acknowledged his reluctance to condemn the building in his Aug. 27 letter to the association.

Ramsingh ended his letter by writing, “Should the engineer recommend an evacuation of all or part of the building, the city will work with the board to help in any way we can in order to find a solution. … We are here to help, and most importantly, keep our citizens and residents safe.

top of the stairwell. Children, or anyone for that matter, can access the unsecured rooftop and fall 7 stories down. This needs to be addressed immediately.”

The condo board had previously “asked ICAMCO to replace the locking door hardware on the roof. That was not done and we found the door secured with rope,” Doll told the Keys Weekly on Sept. 1.

Santa Clara is not alone Santa Clara Condominiums is not the only structure in Key West that concerns building officials. Immediately after the Surfside collapse on June 24, city officials conducted cursory inspections of about 38 aging Key West properties.

The city’s building department notified the owners of nine of those properties of specific concerns and the need for an engineering report.

In addition to Santa Clara, according to documents received from the city of Key West, the other eight properties whose owners received letters from city building officials include: Ocean Walk apartments, Key Plaza shopping center, 1800 Atlantic Condominiums, La Concha Hotel, the Professional Building on 12th Street, Winn Dixie Plaza, Key Plaza Publix and the city-owned Park ’n’ Ride garage on Grinnell Street.

Engineering assessments are being collected and reviewed for each of those properties.

Marathon takes action as well The city of Marathon also has taken action in the wake of the Surfside collapse that killed 98 people when most of the building collapsed.

On Aug. 10, the Marathon City Council passed a law requiring inspections of commercial and high-rise buildings erected more than 17 years ago.

Marathon’s law does not apply to residential units that are considered “minor” — occupied by 10 or fewer people, or 2,000 square feet or less.

According to Marathon Planning Director Brian Shea and Building Director Noe Martinez, the city is preparing the groundwork by coming up with form letters and ensuring engineers can sign in to the city’s software that governs building, code and permitting. More than 400 condo units have been targeted, as well as about 200 other commercial buildings in Marathon. Shea said the notices will probably be sent in batches, over a period of time.

Noe said the 17-year age requirement is based on his decades of experience in the building industry.

“If you move into a new home or building, it usually takes an average of 14 to 17 years before the owner begins renovating or fixing it up, and it also takes into account our aggressive climate,” Martinez said, adding that he knows the inspections, findings and fixes may be cumbersome for private owners. “I don’t have the luxury of special enforcement when it comes to health and safety.”

Martinez said he has already observed some older, two-story concrete buildings in Marathon with “bulging” walls that could indicate structural problems.

he top three finalists in each of the Best of Marathon people’s choice awards have been decided by the voters, which means things will heat up in the daily voting contest that runs Sept.

3-17. After taking a year off due to the pandemic, the Best of Marathon is currently in its 12th iteration of celebrating the best the Middle Keys community — all while raising funds for the Marathon Rotary Club’s public service initiatives.

After two weeks of online nominations, this year’s finalists include those with iconic status, along with some surprises and many firsttime nominees.

Marathon’s taco trend is front and center with Takeria La Palapa and La Isla Taco Grill each garnering first-time nominations for Best Taco to go along with their nominations for Best Food Truck. La Isla is also up for Best New Business with Marathon Mermaid Charters and Bongos Cafe — another food truck favorite on the ballot with Irie Island Eats — an island BBQ joint recently featured on Diners, DriveIns and Dives.

Irie and La Isla will also face off for Best Lunch with Burdine’s Waterfront. Burdine’s previously won Best Key Lime Pie (2010), Fish Sandwich (2011), and Lunch (2017).

New categories for 2021 include Best Sports Coach with MHS baseball skipper Joey Gonzalez slugging it out with MHS football coaches Chef Flavor and Mac Childress — who is also up for Best Educator alongside middle school math teacher MP Coleman and STEM instructor Robert Driscoll.

“These are sure to be the most hotly contested categories because of their fiercely loyal fan base,” said Keys Weekly Publisher Jason Koler.

“Their students love them and could use the power of social media to swing the vote.”

Another big personality category is Best Elected Official — with current councilmen Mark Senmartin and John Bartus competing against Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, whose only win came in 2013, while both Bartus and Senmartin have won multiple times in recent years.

In the private sector, ascending Ocean Sotheby’s Realtor Alley Kelley is a first-time nominee for Best Realtor, joining Coldwell Banker Schmitt’s Teri Hiller and Sam Williams. Hiller won in 2019 after Williams captured the crown in 2017 and ’18.

Other first-time nominees include Rider Photography, Grassy Flats Resort, Capt. Mike Mako, and Dockside bartender “Jenerator” who squares off with the Overseas Bar and Grill’s Andy Sharf and … Cheddar, Best Bartender winner in 2014, 2018 and 2019.

“There were two nominations that didn’t surprise, including Best Happy Hour and Best Vet,” said Koler. “Sparky’s Landing and Mike Dunn hold the distinction as the only two winners in town to capture the same category consecutively since 2008.”

This year Sparky’s challenge comes from Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House and the Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar, while Dunn’s competition includes Dr. Geri Diethlem and Dr. Shavonne Corbel.

“I think it’s great to see so many new faces and businesses nominated along with the iconic establishments,” said Koler. “As the Best of Marathon has grown, the voting has increased dramatically, which increases the competition in each category."

Koler said he believes several factors led to some new faces on the final ballot in 2021. Aside from years of growing popularity, social media has become the premier method to solicit votes for the Best of Marathon. And many of this year's current nominees were notably active on social media, which provided a stronger platform for local campaigns.

But make no mistake. Many previous winners are still on the ballot, which makes the 2021 Best of Marathon one of the most unpredictable and exciting contests so far. Voters can log in once per day to cast a vote over the next two weeks. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, Sept. 17.

“I always remind people of two things,” said Koler. “First, the voters decide the three finalists and the voters decide the winners. And secondly, it’s literally a win just to be nominated. It’s a subjective contest with one common goal: to raise money for our annual nonprofit.

If we can have fun while raising awareness for a great cause, then we’ve accomplished what the Best of Marathon was created to do.”

The 2021 Best of Marathon is sponsored by the Florida Keys Electric Co-op, Centennial Bank, Promotions Guy and Fishermens Community Hospital. Winners will be announced Saturday, Sept 24 at the Marathon Community Park.

his is a new category in the Best of Marathon Awards. All three of the finalists for Best Coach come from Marathon High School. The men bring a ton to the table — not only teaching during the day, but coaching afternoon and nights. It’s a true labor of love, but not always serious. For example, after careful questioning, the Keys Weekly learned that none of these athletic examples have ever won a limbo contest.

MATIE PHOTOGRAPHY Yeni Matie “Yay! I always wanted to be a Best of Marathon finalist!” said Yeni Matie, with gusto. She’s been shooting professionally for four years — portraits, families, engagements and weddings. She pays special attention to color.

“Sunsets, that’s the whole reason people come down here. Well, and the beautiful water,” she said. Recently, she was able to pull off a surprise engagement shoot planned with a sick family member in mind. “I opened my business in the middle of my own chemotherapy and photography helped me through the tough part,” Matie said. “It just touched my heart.”

RIDER PHOTOGRAPHY Meredith Rider “All my work is super candid,” said Meredith Rider, a Marathon photographer who has been working professionally for four years now.

She specializes in couple photo shoots, family portraits and real estate. “At my sessions, I want my clients to have fun and I give them activities to do that elicit genuine emotion. None of my work is posed,” Rider said. On a recent shoot, she took a couple and their two dogs out to the sandbar where they encountered a pod of dolphins. “That was a good day!”

SHADY PALM PHOTOGRAPHY Barry Gaukel “I’ve never considered myself a professional photographer,” said Barry Gaukel. Oh, for goodness’ sake!

Gaukel routinely shoots photos at Marathon parties, sports games and also offers family photos and studio photography to his clients.

“We serve families that come down here on vacation, and we take photographs at the resort where they are staying. It’s a nice memento,” he said. Hands down, he said, his favorite photo shoot ever was when the Blue Angels visited Boca Chica Naval Station a few years ago.

rganizers of Fantasy Fest, Key West's biggest annual party, announced Aug. 30 the cancellation of the annual parade and the street fair.

Producer Nadene Grossman Orr said: "We cannot look into the future, but we can certainly see what is happening in our community today, and the impact that the new variant of COVID-19 has made. We stand by our request that you only attend Fantasy Fest if you are fully vaccinated. We hope that you will abide by our COVID policy and do your part to make the decision to participate based on your own personal well-being.

“We have decided to cancel the Fantasy Fest Parade and the Friday & Saturday Street Fair, scheduled for Oct. 29 & 30, 2021.

“At this time – we are placing the Friday Masquerade March on ‘hold.’

“We will make a determination at a future date as to our ability to safely host the march.

“Fantasy Fest will look different this year, but it is NOT canceled. There will be a schedule of events hosted in and around Key West at many of your favorite venues.

“Please be prepared with masks, proof of vaccination or a negative test, as these venues may enforce their own rules for entry to their events. Key West and the Florida Keys are open for business and our festival partners are looking forward to welcoming you.

“They are already working diligently to keep their operations safe, and their staff healthy.

Please do your part as we continue to navigate the best way to gather safely in October.”

Key West city officials were scheduled to discuss the continuation or cancellation of other fall events at a meeting that started after presstime at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

BRIEFLY Sheriff: Don’t drink and drive this Labor Day weekend This week and continuing through Labor Day weekend, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” national effort to reduce drunk driving. In partnership with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Highway Patrol, the Sheriff’s Office will be out in force keeping an eye out for drunk or impaired drivers.

In the Keys, where there is one road in and one road out, and few alternatives to U.S. 1 when traveling any distance at all, drunk driving is a particularly dangerous activity. Add to that the large numbers of tourists and the large numbers of bars and restaurants in the Keys and drunk driving can be extremely dangerous.

Marine Units will also be patrolling Keys waters through the threeday weekend. Locals can expect large crowds on the water as well as at marinas and boat ramps. A reminder to mariners: Boating drunk is a jailable offense.

The Sheriff’s Office asks that locals and visitors practice patience with highway traffic and designate a sober driver or call a taxi or a ride sharing service if planning to drink alcohol.

American Legion invites public to honor veterans American Legion Post 154 is inviting the public to honor America’s veterans on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. in a ceremony called “Thank You Veterans for Your Service.”

The occasion was inspired by the 13 service members killed recently in Afghanistan, though it is also in recognition and appreciation of the valor and sacrifice our veterans have made in the service of our country.

Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron and Marathon Mayor Luis Gonzales will speak, along with Veterans Affairs Director and veteran Cathy Crane, Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections Captain and veteran Jonathan Crane and retired Army Colonel Abe Conn. A table of honor will be set aside for the 13 killed in action recently, their names will be read, a chaplain will say a prayer and “Taps” will be played. The public is encouraged to bring an American or military service flag — but no political flags — and small flags will be handed out.

Help for high schoolers navigating college application The College of the Florida Keys is teaming up with the Key West Chamber of Commerce to help local high school students, their families, mentors and guidance counselors navigate the college decisions, requirements and deadlines in a free workshop titled “Ready, Set, COLLEGE!” The gathering will be held virtually on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The first part of the workshop will focus on writing. Students will receive tips for writing effective essays for both college admissions and scholarship applications. The second half of the workshop will be dedicated to learning about different ways to pay for college through federal grants and loans, scholarships, and payment plans.

County social services director named to national committee Sheryl Graham, senior director of Monroe County Social Services, was recently appointed by the National Association of Counties (NACo) president to the human services and education steering committee as vice chair of the aging subcommittee due to her talent and leadership.

She was also appointed as a member to the programs and services standing committee.

The committee will cover children, foster care, public assistance and income support, services to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, immigration policy, social services, and education issues.

Graham has been with Monroe County since 2006 and the director of Social Services since 2008.

t the Aug. 18 meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, the four board members present unanimously resolved to ask Florida’s Department of Transportation to step in and help the county with solutions for the hot mess that is the traffic situation on U.S. 1. The resolution was taken after reviewing a traffic study that was conducted in March by consulting firm AECOM. “​​This is what it is, and it’s still awfully bad,” said Commissioner Craig Cates after listening to AECOM’s presentation. “Could someone explain this to me? Islamorada seems to be where a lot of problems are.”

One possible answer? Missing mile marker signs.

“Recently, I’ve heard from the Upper Keys that some of our mile marker signs have disappeared,” said Commissioner David Rice. “And frankly it's an odd thing ... and as a result, people who are look-

ing for an address, who I guess don’t have GPS, are slowing down, impeding traffic while they’re looking visually for a number on a building.Their recommendation was to replace mile marker signs and even replace them at the half mile to avoid slowing down traffic.”

“Half mile markers? That’s a fantastic idea,” responded Commissioner Eddie Martinez, who pointed out that the zero mile marker sign in Key West disappears at least once a month.

“That’s because there are a lot of college dorm rooms decorated with mile marker signs,” joked Mayor Michelle Coldiron.

AECOM conducted the traffic study for two weeks in March 2021 by placing control stations to measure speed at 24 points along U.S. 1, from Key Largo to Key West. This study is conducted every two years. The firm discovered that the overall speed on U.S. 1 was 45.5 mph, a drop from 46 mph in 2017.

The worst area for traffic congestion? Islamorada. And it’s gotten worse

over four years. In March, the highway from Tea Table Bridge to Whale Harbor Bridge had a median speed of 35.3 mph, which was a drop from the median speed recorded in 2017 of 39.2 mph. In March, Whale Harbor Bridge to Snake Creek Bridge had a median speed of 39.3 mph.

The speed recorded in the area in 2017 was 41.0.

Other hot spots for lower recorded speeds? Plantation Key, Lower Matecumbe and Duck Key. However, Stock Island experienced an increase in speed, from a median speed of 29.4 in 2017 to 40 mph recorded in 2021. The highest recorded speed was on Boca Chica, with a median speed of 59.9 mph.

Some of AECOM’s suggestions to help congestion include: improve transit services, add turn lanes to improve traffic flow and consolidate driveways to reduce interruptions.

But County Administrator Roman Gastesi pointed out that FDOT is just waiting to be asked officially to step in and help with projects to help with congestion. “​​The resolution would go a long way toward what we need,” he said, explaining that the official assigned to Monroe County is Stacy L. Miller, who is serving as FDOT District Six Secretary.

“Very good,” Rice said. “I’d love to see her in person, but she may want to avoid the traffic.”

“We have high hopes for Stacy,” said Coldiron.

With that, the commissioners unanimously voted for a Resolution of Support to FDOT to institute traffic flow improvement projects at congestion areas identified by the traffic study.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? It felt right: my passion is to work with children and their families.

What is your teaching style/ philosophy? Communicate and interact – stimulate the mind and enjoy everything we do.

What are your hobbies outside of school? Learning, swimming, family.

What is your teaching style/ philosophy? I value classroom community and collaborative discussion. I want my students to work together to tackle ideas and problems and to learn from one another.

What are your hobbies outside of school? I enjoy running, biking, kayaking, fishing and all the great outdoor things the Keys have to offer. I also love reading and baking.

How long have you been in the Keys? I have lived in the Keys permanently for 2 years , I have owned a home here for 17 years.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I became a teacher because I enjoy working with young people.

What is your teaching style/philosophy? My teaching philosophy is I try to make the work as much fun as possible.

What are your hobbies outside of school? My hobbies are swimming, golf, boating and fishing.

MICHELE YABLON Hometown: Runnemede, New Jersey Degree from: Southern New Hampshire University How long have you been in the Keys? Almost seven years Why did you decide to become a teacher? A few years ago, after Hurricane Irma, I had decided that I was ready to move on from a long career in the dental field.

There was a need in this community that I thought I could help fulfill and enjoy, and that was being a part of our education system. I wanted to help guide the youth of the community through their educational journey with exciting things that I experienced in mine.

What is your teaching style/ philosophy? I haven’t quite found my teaching style yet. I feel that comes with time and experience.

For now, I want to form relationships and help the students enjoy their time at school as much as possible while learning.

What are your hobbies outside of school? Outside of school I like to sketch and paint and create art.

I also like to read and I love being a student myself.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? It's all I ever wanted to be. I loved school as a kid and never wanted to leave! I remember as a child lining up my dolls, and sometimes the other neighborhood kids, to "teach" them lessons just like my teacher did!

Between teaching college for 16 years and being back in K-12 for 6 years now, I've made education my career.

What is your teaching style/ philosophy? Education is about the whole child, not just a few skills that they can demonstrate on a standardized test. We must teach so much more than traditional topics like English, math and science. We also must teach them what it means to be a good citizen, how to be a responsible adult, how to interact with and positively impact your community. And all this requires good relationships with your students, which I try to create little by little each day.

What are your hobbies outside of school? I love theater, and have performed extensively in community theater and semi-professional theaters for many years now. I am on the board of the Key Players in Key Largo and often perform with that group. I am also a vocal musician and in my free time love playing with my cat, Henry.

TIMOTHY CRUTCHER Hometown: I don’t have a place that I claim as a hometown, since I grew up moving a lot. If I had to pick the place I lived the longest, it would be Reading, Pennsylvania.

Degree from: My degrees are from Southern Nazarene University, Nazarene Theological Seminary and the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium).

How long have you been in the Keys? I’ve lived in the Keys for just over two years now.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? I always wanted to be a teacher. I love learning and sharing information and helping other people see the world in deeper, more significant ways. After teaching college for nearly 20 years, I became a high school teacher because I wanted to be a part of changing the lives of the young people in Marathon.

What is your teaching style/philosophy? If I had to pick a “teaching philosophy,” it would be something like “Sharing wisdom through relationship.”

I care about the kind of learning that makes navigating the world easier and more effective, and I work hard to connect with my students, whoever they are and at whatever level they find themselves.

What are your hobbies outside of school? When I have free time, I enjoy reading and computer games and kayaking when I get the chance.

he newest face at Baptist Health Medical Group in Marathon is Dr. Karisa Falden, a family medicine practitioner. This is her first job, postresidency.

“I love being outside,” said Falden of her move to the Florida Keys, adding that it’s a huge change from Chicago where she spent the last eight years.

The Florida native — she graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and did her undergraduate studies at Florida International University — said the novelty of a northern winter wore off by year two.

Why family medicine?

“I love … everything,” Falden said. “I had an interest in obstetrics, too, but I like building a relationship with a patient, the longevity of it. And I love treating kids, women and men. I love when everyday is different.”

Falden comes from a family of medical professionals.

Mom is a nurse, as is her sister, and dad is a physician’s assistant. She said she always knew she wanted to help people, adding that she chose the Baptist Health South Florida position in Marathon very carefully.

“I was born at the Baptist hospital in Kendall,” she said, “and volunteered there in high school. The Baptist Health Medical Group in Marathon has a very well run clinic with good follow-up. They are very supportive, too, of the medical staff and their patients.”

It doesn’t hurt that the doctors have a brand-new hospital to work in at Fishermen’s Community Hospital. “It’s amazing to have new machines, but to have all new machines? Everything is brand new. And it’s a rare opportunity to work in a new hospital.”

Suddenly friends and strangers, who never once mentioned reading any of my articles, were stopping me at the grocery store to talk about the yellowbanded “crunchy worms” that had shown up all over the Middle Keys.

I have too many good things to say about the Keys Weekly Newspaper and Marathon community to put into words here, my last issue as editor. (Though I plan to be a frequent contributor for the rest of my life.) I know that I am leaving at the top of my game for the top news organization in the Florida Keys and I am proud of what we have all achieved together. I know that the friendships I have made at the paper, and through the paper, are forever.

Mark and I will never leave Marathon — we love it way too much — but look forward to being able to get off the rock to see our family more often. Who knows, we might even begin to socialize at places other than the shop or the office.

You know who else didn’t leave? The bugs. And so I’ll back slowly and quietly into the bushes a la Homer Simpson with this, the story that put me on the map,

THEY’RE MILLIPEDES, DANG IT!

Household mystery bugs explained

By Sara Matthis Those little yellow and black-striped crunchy worms that seem to appear magically overnight INSIDE Keys homes have a scientific name. Officially, they are called the yellow-banded millipede.

And we got ’em first.

“The record states that they were found first in Monroe County in 2001,” said Kim Gabel, her very professional tone suggesting otherwise. Gabel, a horticulture agent with the University of Florida’s Monroe County Extension Service, said it’s not known how the Caribbean bug landed on our shores, but it has since spread to Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Gabel assures callers (me) that they are just a nuisance. They aren’t venomous or destructive. They don’t eat household plants or poison pets.

They just make a really disconcerting crunching noise when stepped on — barefoot — in the middle of the night. Oh, and if you don’t turn on the light and clean it up right away, it’s gonna leave a mark.

“I just sweep them up and put them back outside,” Gabel said. “They are part of nature’s brigade, so to speak. The bugs break down our wood chips and create a nice fertilizer for us.”

For those seeking a more permanent solution, try adding some weather stripping to the front and back doors. Seal up the vents to the outside.

It’s possible the bugs are seeking the light or moisture. Certainly, if the millipedes knew what they had coming to them, they wouldn’t want inside the house.

“Once they enter the building, usually within 24 hours, they die due to the dry conditions,” reads one pamphlet.

One last note: Monkeys in a Miami-Dade County zoo have been observed rubbing their fur with the yellow-banded millipedes. Some grackles (songbirds) have been seen to do the same thing. Apparently, millipede secretions act as an insect repellent.

CELEBRATING OUR LABORS Labor Day: recognizing American workers since 1894

L

abor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, and it came about in response to one of the most dismal chapters in the saga of the American worker.

From History.com: “In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories, and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.” Working conditions were often abysmal as well.

As the United States turned from an agrarian to a manufacturing economy, labor unions began to speak up for workers, protesting poor working conditions and advocating for better hours and fair pay.

Their messages on behalf of laborers weren’t graciously accepted by the employers of the day. The tipping point happened in 1894, when employees of the Pullman railroad car company went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of American Railroad Union representatives. The union then called for a boycott of all Pullman railroad cars, which crippled rail traffic nationwide.

To stop the strike, the federal government sent troops to Chicago.

This resulted in rioting that ended up with a dozen workers killed. Out of the unrest, Congress voted to declare Labor Day a national holiday, and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

Our local labor force deserves recognition as well. There are more than a few local workers who know all too well the concept of 12-hour days and seven-day weeks just to be able to afford life in the islands. But Keys people have a tradition of hard work ever since the first people set foot on these rocks.

The Calusa and Tequesta tribes knew how hard it was to live here.

Food and fresh water were in short supply, but they thrived under the hot Florida sun. The local tribes actually started the wrecking and salvage industry down here, and prospered until the arrival of the Bahamians and Americans. In those old days, there were efforts at farming (mostly pineapples and citrus), as well as fishing, sponging and turtling. All these occupations were hard work outdoors, in the days long before mosquito control!

The world got a good bit smaller after Flagler’s railroad was completed. It took years of backbreaking

labor to build the bridges and finish the railroad — and workers earned $1.25 a day, along with food, lodging, and medical care.

Our commercial fishermen still pull in the traps like they did in days of old, and our charter captains and crew work hard to ensure that everyone has a great time and catches some fish.

While commercial fishing remains an important part of our Keys economy, tourism and related businesses generate the most local revenue.

Outside of commercial fishing, most of our local businesses depend (in one way or another) upon our visitors. From restaurants to hairdressers to exterminators to publishers, employees and business owners rely on dollars generated by tourism. And those who work in these businesses really work — from the bartender to the marine mechanic to the landscaper. We are as good as we are thanks to the labors of all who live here.

I’d like to recognize a special class of worker whose labors are essential to all of us, especially in this last year.

Our first responders and frontline healthcare workers have really made a difference in all our lives. With resources stretched and hospitals back at capacity amidst this latest COVID surge, these heroes deserve our thanks and admiration.

PEOPLE STILL SMOKE? Quitting means dealing with two habits

T

he other day, as I was returning my shopping cart to the corral at the local grocery store in Big Pine, I watched a lady take her last drag off her cigarette and then flick the butt out the window.

More than a decade in the Army didn’t help. Finally, after becoming a flight surgeon in the USAF I got hold of a wonder drug named varenicline and kicked the habit.

Some quick facts: somewhere between 14% and 17% of the adult population in Florida smokes. Every year more than 32,000 Floridians die from smoking-related illness. That’s more than died in 2020 from COVID-related illnesses, and it happens every year. Additionally, almost one million Floridians suffer from chronic illnesses due to smoking.

Why is this still a problem? The root of the addiction is nicotine, one of the most addictive substances known to man. It is on the same list as heroin, alcohol, methamphetamine and cocaine.

It has both stimulant and anxiety-reducing effects. Repetitive use causes both physical and psychological dependence. Withdrawal can be physically and emotionally difficult.

So how do you quit? You are essentially dealing with two addictions — nicotine, and the repetitive habits that you have associated with smoking. In your brain, nicotine binds to nicotinic receptors; this binding causes increased dopamine to be released. Dopamine is the feel-good chemical that our brains release after we do something we enjoy – good food, exercise, sex, and, in smokers, a cigarette. Your primary care provider can help you with this aspect. From most to least successful, varenicline, buproprion (best if used with nicotine replacement therapy) and nicotine replacement therapy all help the brain maintain increased dopamine levels, which decreases cravings.

We have learned that the habits of smoking are just as difficult to break as well. What will you do with that morning coffee?

Or after an angry customer? Or while sitting next to the cart corral? I always tell people, as long as it isn’t unhealthy, do anything you like! But sometimes it is good to have some additional support. Tobacco Free Florida has numerous programs that you can enroll in, if you want to join a group, you can do that. If you would rather just check into their online resources, they can help too.

Bottom line, pick up your trash, and then call your provider and schedule a smoking cessation appointment. Your lungs, and our environment, will be happier!

ARCH IS RESTORED West Martello feature destroyed by Irma

M

onroe County completed the repairs to the partially collapsed historic archway at West Martello to match the original.

The archway is within the walls of the Civil War-era West Martello fort built in 1866 that was never officially completed.

The nonprofit Key West Garden Club manages the tropical gardens along the shoreline on Higgs Beach. There is no admission, and it is open to the public. Special events, like weddings, are often held within the walls, with the archway being a center point of many celebrations.

“We already hosted the first wedding right dab smack in front of the archway a couple of weekends ago,” said Kathleen Gillis, a volunteer garden club docent. “It is an iconic part of our garden, and we are so happy to have it again.”

The island community would suffer during the Seminole War. On Aug. 7, 1840 some 130 Indians attacked the island. Six people were killed and many of the buildings looted and burned.

Housman and his wife, Elizabeth Ann, would survive the attack and move to Key West. According to accounts by Charles Howe, who remained on the island after the attack, Housman returned to Indian Key in September. Though urged to return and reopen his general store, he went back to Key West at the end of October. In a letter written by Howe, “he cleared out for good — took everything he had left, to Key West … to sell at Auction — his Negroes — Boats — vessels & I think I see his object, he is as usual very schemey, he is a good deal in debt…”

Housman would be working a shipwreck during what was reported to be a period of turbulent weather on May 1, 1841. According to stories told about him, while attempting to move from one ship to another, he was caught between the two ships and crushed to death.

Housman’s widow, or so the story suggests, retrieved her husband and returned him to Indian Key where his body was interred beneath a marble tombstone.

The inscription reads: “Here lieth the body of Capt. Jacob Housman, formerly of Staten Island, State of New York, Proprietor of the island, who died by accident May 1st, 1841, aged 41 years 11 months. To his friends he was sincere, to his enemies he was kind, to all men faithful. This monument is erected by his most disconsolate though affectionate wife, Elizabeth Ann Housman. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.”

that it is submitting an application for a CDBGMIT-CIP grant for $4.6m to fund the improvements to the Cocoplum Beach area that will benefit all the local residents as well as visitors. Improvements include elevating roadways and drainage improvements to alleviate the loss of road access and floodwater inundation impacts due to sea level rise and storm surges. The implementation of this project is critical to this area, and they are based on recommendations on the FDEP Coastal Resiliency, Marathon Resiliency- Phase 1 grants completed in June 2019 and the Cocoplum Beach Area- Phase 2 study completed in June 2021.

This project is an effort led by the City staff to mitigate any damage and future loss of property and lives and it is considered a strategic investment to minimize risks and reduce losses on a service area with over 60% of low to mid income residents.

As shown in previous storm events, this area has been critically disrupted with severe flooding, and roadway failures. When this flooding occurs, residents and businesses in this area are trapped or prevented from doing business as usual. Frequent, prolonged inundation has damages roads, infrastructure, businesses and homes. During these flooding events, emergency response time are also increased, escalating the risk to the residents. Investing in mitigation projects like

this will improve the City’s resiliency by protecting our local residents and will enhance the CDBG-MIT community lifelines of safety and security, transportation and health and medicine.

CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER FULL-TIME Department: administration Salary: $52,000.00 Benefits include: medical, dental, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave and holidays; and retirement (employee only) Job Description The Code Enforcement Officer conducts inspections and investigates complaints for compliance with City codes and ordinances, including the inspection of short term (vacation) rentals, and enforcement of short term (vacation) rental codes and ordinances. The Officer seeks to obtain compliance with City codes through citations or warning notices while assuring due process to violators. The position is required to prepare letter and written documentation necessary to take violators to hearing for enforcement action and to provide testimony before the Code Enforcement Adjustment and Appeals Board. This position reports directly to the Code Enforcement and Vacation Rental Manager. Work is performed under general supervision which requires initiative, independent judgment, and organizational skills. The Code Enforcement Officer must deal effectively with the public, property owners and contractors to obtain compliance.

Job Responsibilities - Administers and enforces the City’s short term (vacation) rental ordinances and actively manages the City’s program to register, inspect and monitor short term (vacation) rentals within the City.

- Investigates complaints regarding code violations pertaining to building, housing, zoning, tree, sign, and other City codes by conducting field investigations and property research.

- Regularly attends and provides testimony before the Code Enforcement, Adjustments and Appeals Board or Special Magistrate regarding code violations.

- Provides violators of City codes with citations or notice of violation and gives the violator due process to comply with City codes.

- Routinely patrols designated area for potential code violations, including violations of the short-term rental ordinances, overgrown lot and untagged or inoperable vehicle, and all other applicable local civil laws and submits weekly inspection reports to the City Administrator.

- Maintains records regarding code violations via a computer-aided tracking system, and documents files until compliance is obtained or a lien is imposed.

- Prepares letters for notice of violation and notice of hearing, clearly identifying code violations and appropriate corrective action.

- Conducts follow-up inspections to previously identified code violations to ensure that code compliance is maintained.

- Assists with permitting and inspection to the degree certification is necessary and obtained from the CITY of KCB. - Maintains vehicles and equipment used in the code enforcement process in good working order.

- Nights, weekends and holiday work will be required, floating 40 hours per week.

- Typical day 2 hours office 6 hours on the road.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience - High school diploma required. Experience using computer software and applications. Good written and verbal communication skills, and excellent public relations skills are a necessity. Two years’ experience performing public contact work and demonstrating written, verbal, computer and organization skills is required.
