A recent study put Key West at No. 7 in the world in most beautiful sunsets. A study by Bounce was based on data collected from Instagram, online articles and blogs that recommended places to view sunsets. ey West wants out of its 27-year marriage to big cruise ships and to the privately owned Pier B dock. That much was clear from the July 12 city commission workshop. ut so were the city attorney’s warnings to the commission: It will be a messy and devastatingly expensive divorce.

No votes were taken as the meeting was a workshop.

“Can we please give the cruise ships direction that they’re not welcome, at least at our two ports?”

Commissioner Jimmy Weekley asked City Manager Patti McLauchlin.

McLauchlin also said, in answer to a question from Commissioner Billy Wardlow, that no smaller cruise ships have yet expressed any interest in coming to Key West.

The city will try to work around a new state law, so it can refuse big ships at the two piers it operates, Mallory and Outer Mole. The state law voided the voter referendum because it was passed by the voters, and not by a government body. If the city commis-

sion passes ordinances that mirror the referendum limits, then the city can turn away ships — unless and until the legislature decides to override that move in its next session, City Attorney Shawn Smith said, adding that he would tell the commission what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear.

The real concern and contention is the city’s contract with the privately owned Pier B, which for more than 20 years has given the city 25% of all cruise ship revenues each year, totaling about $27 million. That contract renews every 10 years unless both sides agree to end it.

Mayor Teri Johnston — and the Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships — were adamant that any restrictions apply to all cruise ports, and not just the two city-run ones.

Johnston also was appalled at the contract the city signed nearly 30 years ago.

“There’s got to be a way to modify that agreement,” Johnston said. “How do we get out of that agreement?” she asked City Attorney Shawn Smith.

“We pay,” Smith answered.

Smith also repeatedly warned the commission of his concerns about including Pier B in any restrictions: Any attempt to limit business at Pier B will lead to a lawsuit like the city has never seen before.

John Wells, retired president of Caribe Nautical ships’ agent and a supporter of cruise ships, cites an environmental study that questions his opponents’ claim that cruise ships damage coral reefs.

“The lawsuit we’ll face is Duck Tours on steroids,” Smith told the commission, referring to the $8 million settlement the city had to pay in the early 2000s to a Duck Tours company, after a court decided the city had passed regulations that put the company out of business while granting a tour monopoly to another company.

“The agreement you have with Pier B is markedly different from the other operations. My job is to protect you and the city from liability, and I’ll tell you, I think Pier B sues us. I don’t think it’s a threat; I think it’s legitimate and I think it will be a breach of contract claim and an interstate commerce claim.”

Attorney Bart Smith, representing the owners of Pier B, read a history of the city’s contract with Pier B and told the commission, “All we’ve ever done is exactly what the city wanted us to do and we hope and expect the city to continue to honor the agreement.

We are willing to meet to discuss anything.”

Johnston and Weekley directed Smith, regardless of the lawsuit warnings, to do some research, hire outside specialists if necessary, and find a way out.”We want something done. Just find a way of doing it,” Weekley told Smith.

“The problem I keep coming back to, is we’ve taken the benefit of that agreement for nearly 30 years and that’s a problem,” Smith said, but agreed to research the matter and find a specialist.

The Safer Cleaner Ships Committee applauded the commission’s resolve and vowed to help draft the new ordinances.

#SOSCUBA Cubans in the Keys tell of the struggle 90 miles away

By Sara Matthis, Jim McCarthy and Mandy Miles n July 11, thousands of protestors in Cuba took to the streets in at least five cities, and were joined by thousands more in South Florida on July 12. This is the largest protest in memory since 1956. The hashtag “#SOSCuba” is trending on Twitter and everyone from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to entertainers Gloria Estefan and Pitbull is voicing support for Cuban people.

“Up with liberty. This is the closest we’ve come to liberty in 62 years of dictatorship,” said Robert La Fe, from his cigar shop in Marathon. He said he urges the United States to intercede.

On July 13, peaceful supporters of their brothers and sisters in Cuba gathered in Marathon in front of Juice Paradise Cafe. In Key West, they rallied the night of July 11 at the Southernmost Point, only 90 miles from Havana, then again on Tuesday, July 13 at the historic San Carlos Institute on Duval Street.

The institute was founded in 1871 “as the cradle of Cuban independence,” said its board president Rafael Penalver, a South Florida attorney whose family fled the Castro regime just before Penalver’s 10th birthday. “The San Carlos stands as a symbol of the Cuban people’s perseverance in their struggle for independence. In 1892, Jose Marti gave a speech at the San Carlos, calling it La Casa Cuba, where he united the Cuban exile community.”

As of presstime July 14, there were plans in the Upper Keys to gather at Denny’s Latin Cafe and drive south in a car parade. (See keysweekly.com for more from the Upper Keys event.)

In televised speeches, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has blamed the recent unrest on the United States. He took office three years ago, hand-picked by former President Raul Castro, brother of Fidel. Diaz-Canel said many of the Cuban protests have been manipulated by social media from the U.S. and called for Communist Party supporters to confront “provocations.”

Locals, many with immediate family members in Cuba, say the situation in the island nation has deteriorated. The pressures of COVID — as an illness rampant in Cuba, as well as the decline it prompted in the Cuban economy that relies on international tourism blocked by the pandemic — have resulted in very reduced medical care and food shortages in Cuba.

And, while Cuba used to depend heavily on cheap gas from Venezuela to run utilities, that support has also ended, as that South American country is facing its own economic challenges. That has resulted in regular outages of electricity and water supply that predated the protests.

“There’s no milk for the kids,” said La Fe, who has three grandchildren and one sister living in Cuba, whom he left behind 30 years ago to come to the U.S. Alexa Gonzalez, of Key Largo, received a phone call from her second cousin in Havana on the evening of July 12. Gonzalez’s family, which includes her mom, dad, little sister, grandparents, cousins and uncles, said her second cousin is the only family member in Cuba at the moment.

Gonzalez said the phone call lasted two minutes with her second cousin before it was cut off.

“She was freaking out,” Gonzalez said.

“She said that they (the police) were throwing everyone onto the streets. They were walking around and they’ll come and attack you. If they find out you’re talking about the U.S., or anything, they’ll come and take your phone and take you to jail.”

Gonzalez also said that kids ages 16 to 19 are being forced to be part of the Cuban military. If they object, “they’re threatening to kill them for being a traitor to the motherland.”

With the call cut off, Gonzalez said she’s hoping to hear from her cousin again, and soon.

“I really hope that she doesn’t die because that’s how things are looking now,” she said.

Cuban American and Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez said the despotic Castro regime in Cuba has deprived its people of economic liberty and life for the past six decades. Nuñez, who’s a frequent visitor to the Keys with a home in Islamorada’s Executive Bay, said the message seen from across the island is an outcry of shortages of basic necessities.

“I stand in solidarity with the freedomseeking people of Cuba calling for the end of communist dictatorship,” she said in a statement. “The Castros’ continued repression won’t keep the Cuban people from peacefully demanding their God-given rights.”

In Key West, Cuban-American business owner George Fernandez, whose family also fled the Castro regime, said, “It’s difficult to think that Cuba, our sister island, is only 90 miles away, but a world apart in ideology. The recent developments in Cuba are unfortunate in that peaceful demonstrations by the citizens have prompted the government to brutally suppress their voices. and sisters at this time, who stand together in their mission to bring their dreams of liberty, democracy and human rights once and for all to our sister island nation.”

Penalver called the protests “a pivotal, grass-roots movement from people crying out for an end to the Castro regime.

These are people who have lost their fear. They don’t want aid or physical good, but basic freedoms and basic rights. Unequivocally, the United States should demand an end to the regime. The formula for the continuing Castro regime has been to hold onto power at any cost.

“The shortages we’re hearing about are symptoms of the illness that is the dictatorship and the lack of freedom,” Penalver said, adding that the recent uprising made him fearful for the Cuban people, but “hopeful that the world will finally see their plight.”

“I’ll never forget my classmate’s father, who was tried by the kangaroo courts, and then shot by firing squad,” Penalver said. “When I think of the life I’ve lived in this country, compared to the lives my friends lived in Cuba, there’s just no comparison. There’s just been too much bloodshed and oppression, all so one family could hold onto power.”

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay told the Keys Weekly that there was an emergency management meeting on July 12 for top law enforcement. Authorities are on alert that the number of chugs trying to cross the Straits, or U.S. residents trying to cross to Cuba on rescue missions, could increase. Ramsay said Homeland Security and the Border Patrol are monitoring the situation. “The crowds in the Keys are large, but peaceful.

And they are staying out of the roadways, unlike what happened in Miami on the Palmetto Expressway,” he said, referring to protestors blocking the freeway, expressly forbidden under a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in April, and adding that such actions can sometimes cost the movement support.

“Here, in the Keys, they are staying off the roadway. Which we want, for their own safety,” he said.

Stories of what’s happening in Cuba bloomed on July 11, then suddenly disappeared on July 12 from the internet. One Cuban woman working at a grocery store in Marathon said, “They’ve cut the phones, they’ve cut the internet,” referring to Cuban authorities. Ramsay confirmed the situation. “We know that Cuba shut down internet and phones in an effort to suppress what’s really happening,” Ramsay said.

Broadwave’s Jordan Smith said Cuban authorities absolutely have the controls to cut internet access. Broadwave operates in the Florida Keys, offering high-bandwidth Internet access, advanced Wi-Fi capabilities and point-to-point private line services. Smith has visited Cuba and is familiar with the technological landscape.

“It’s 100% done (restricting phone and internet access),” said Smith. “I’ve seen it while I was visiting. They control the internet feed into Cuba and the filtering they do there is insane. They can shut down any sort of access they want — cell phone or WiFi. This is why you can be arrested for using a satellite phone in public. They want to control all forms of communication.”

On July 12, Cuban-Americans in the Keys and U.S. media outlets were reporting that in-country Cubans could no longer access Facebook or WhatsApp. However, as of midday on July 13, there were posts on Twitter that seemed to be recent. Searching #SOSCuba revealed one message that appeared to originate in Cuba asking for support and prayers, while elaborating they were able to get the message out by connecting to a virtual private network (VPN).

Yaimara Perez, also of Marathon, said she spoke to her sister in Cuba two days ago. Normally, she corresponds with her mother six or seven times a day via WhatsApp, but heard nothing on July 12. The following day, again, no communication.

“When I spoke to my sister two days ago she told me her feet were hurting. When I asked why, she told me she has to walk two miles each way to get water for the household. The water utility, the turbines operating them, completely shut down 15 days ago. She needs water for everything, including to brush her teeth,” said Perez, visibly upset.

Sources like the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal have blamed the shutdown of water plants and electric utilities in Cuba on the decreasing supply of cheap gas from Venezuela, a political ally facing its own economic crisis.

Shortages of food, medicine The food shortage is perhaps even worse. A local law-enforcement official who interacts with Cuban refugees who are interdicted while trying to reach U.S. shores said, simply, “They’re starving. That’s why they are coming.”

Recently, Acela Valdes spent $400 in U.S. dollars to deliver a 100-pound sack of rice, a 20-pound pork leg and 50 pounds of black beans to family in Cuba through a special export-import service. (The retail value of those items is about $245, the balance is for the delivery fee.) Valdes said the cost of one pound of rice at Cuban stores is about 70 pesos.

According to Reuters, Cuba traditionally imports by sea around 70% of the food it consumes.

Perez said Cubans are paid salaries in Cuban pesos, but the stores in Cuba only accept “convertibles” currency.

“You can only buy products with convertibles, but you are paid in pesos. How is that going to work?” she asked.

The Associated Press reported that one of its photographers was beaten by Cuban police earlier this week. On July 14, major news outlets

in the U.S. reported that one protestor had been killed in Cuba. On July 13, a Twitter video shows a horse-drawn cart arriving in a mad dash at a Cuban hospital, allegedly carrying a protester who was shot by Cuban police. Another tweet, marked sensitive, shows a photo of a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head, allegedly by Cuban police.

Post-COVID but pre-protest, Cuban Americans were gathering medical supplies for family members in Cuba who needed surgery or hospital care.

Acela Valdes, the Marathon woman who shipped food to family, said her nephew in Cuba recently required a simple surgery.

“When you go to the hospital in Cuba, you take your own bedsheets, your own pillow, even the light bulb for your room,” Valdes said. “Family brings the gauze and the syringe and even the medicine. It’s shameful.”

“As a humanitarian organization with a core mission of protecting lives at-sea, we echo the message of many U.S. leaders in support of the Cuban people exercising their fundamental right of freedom of expression and assembly, but also remind anyone considering a migrant voyage not to take to the sea. The transit is dangerous and unforgiving as nearly 20 lives were tragically lost in recent weeks as a result of these dangerous voyages.

The Coast Guard along with our local, state and federal partners are monitoring any activity that may indicate increases in unsafe and illegal maritime migration in the Florida straits, including unpermitted vessel departures from Florida to Cuba.”

Throughout the pandemic, Cuban officials touted their altruism and ability to send medical professionals to areas of the world hard-hit by COVID-19. But according to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, it’s all about profit where the benefitting countries pay Cuba for the service in dollars or Euros, with the state pocketing most of the receipts. Cuba was singled out in the annual State Department report on trafficking: “ … a government policy or government pattern to profit from labor export programs with strong indications of forced labor, particularly its foreign medical missions program … Cuba capitalized on the pandemic by increasing the number and size of medical missions and refused to improve the program’s transparency or address labor violations and trafficking crimes despite persistent allegations from observers, former participants, and foreign governments” of Cuban abuses.

Perez said she regularly sends anywhere from $200 to $850 a month to family in Cuba.

The Trump administration changed the law on remittances — money sent from U.S. residents to family in Cuba — to $1,000 per quarter. Now, Perez buys Euros to send to Cuba. Still, she’s paying a higher fee per transaction, or searching for a trusted friend to deliver money from the U.S. to Cuba.

Gonzalez, the woman whose call to a cousin was cut short, said she’s never been to Cuba. She said she refuses to go and live like a tourist while families there are struggling.

“My hope is that the Cuban people take over and show them that they won’t back down, and that they’re sick and tired of it, and that somebody listens,” she said.

Desperate refugees Since late May, some 21 Cubans have been declared dead or missing after capsizing near the Keys, trying to reach shore in two separate accidents; 21 of the passengers were plucked from the water and returned to Guantanamo.

Although the Obama administration ended the “wet foot, dry foot” policy that would allow Cubans who reached U.S. soil to apply for U.S. citizenship, Cubans still try to make it here. Their hope is to arrive safely, and slip into South Florida unnoticed.

Since October, the Coast Guard has interdicted 554 Cubans and returned them to Cuba. The numbers are on the rise. That’s more than the number who were caught crossing the seas during the entire year of 2018 (259) and 2019 (313) and 10 times higher than those who crossed and were interdicted in 2020 (46). Unless the refugees require medical attention, they are kept aboard Coast Guard cutters and repatriated within days.

Yaimara Perez has been in the U.S. for more than five years and said she was desperate to leave Cuba. She said as soon as she arrived, she prioritized learning English to apply for citizenship, which she now has.

“Learning English was my best option in this county — I had to learn and learn and learn — so I could put in the papers to ask for my mom to immigrate here,” Perez said. “She is 66 years old.”

She continued, “We need to be free. We have to continue, we have to keep going. I don’t want this to just be about July 11. I want to see July 12 and July 13 and July 14 so that we can see change in Cuba.”

ennessee Williams famously claimed, “New Orleans is the best place to write. I can’t think of anywhere else with such characters.” Dennis Beaver, curator of the recently reopened Tennessee Williams Museum, is quick to note the legendary playwright made that proclamation two years before he came to Key West and irrevocably fell for its characters and edge-of-the-world charm. Williams would spend the rest of his life writing on the island; at a succession of guest houses, the La Concha Hotel, where he finished the manuscript for “A Streetcar Named Desire” and later from a storage shed studio, christened “the madhouse,” at his Duncan Street home.

“He did almost all of his major writing while living in Key West,” said Beaver, maintaining that Williams was far more prolific than “that other writer over there on Whitehead Street,” Ernest Hemingway.

Beaver began curating his collection of Tennessee Williams artifacts in 2010 at the behest of the Key West Art and Historical Society.

“They asked me to do an exhibit on Tennessee Williams for his 100th birthday. We did it at the East Martello Fort and the response was so incredible that they said, ‘Could you put together a permanent exhibition?’” A decade later, that exhibit became the Tennessee Williams Museum, 513 Truman Ave., and an official part of the Key West Art and Historical Society.

The museum’s collection includes a series of illustrations based on characters from Williams’

plays, drawn by famed caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, and a wall dedicated to the film “The Rose Tattoo,” written

by Williams and filmed on location in Key West. Despite the availability of color film technology, Tennessee insisted the movie be made in black and white, believing the brilliance of the island’s flora and fauna would distract audiences from the story itself. Key West is never mentioned by name in the film, and according to Beaver, the omission was deliberate, “Tennessee said, ‘I don't want people to know where it is. I moved to Key West to get away from people.’”

An area of the museum is dedicated to another Rose, Tennessee’s older sister and perennial muse.

Rose was lobotomized at age 24 in an attempt by their mother to curb her daughter’s wild ways. According to Beaver, “Tennessee always felt guilty that he was not there to protect Rose and that became the main reason that he later brought her to Key West.” Rose lived for several

years on Von Phister Street, where her famous brother held legendary parties in the ballroom of her home.

Williams’ own Duncan Street house, which he shared with his partner Frank Merlo and a cast of beloved bulldogs, has been immortalized by artist Jane Rohrschneider.

Her detailed model, completed in 2017, anchors the museum’s main gallery.

The museum also houses an extensive collection of photographs of Tennessee Williams taken in Key West. Among them is a portrait of the writer in 1981 on Front Street wearing a full raccoon fur jacket and fisherman’s cap on the coldest day in the island’s recorded history.

Beaver’s first introduction to Tennessee Williams came not from his writing, but from inadvertently meeting the man himself. In the 1980s Beaver owned a boarding house on Olivia Street. Viola Veidt, a down-on-her-luck socialite, was a tenant of his and a frequent lunch

date of Williams. “I would tell Viola, ‘your date is here.’ I didn't even know who he was at the time. Viola had lots of lipstick and she was always telling me, ‘Oh, darling, Ten did this or Ten did that and he gave me another painting.’ I never paid any attention.” It wasn’t until the writer’s death in 1983 that Beaver began following his work.

“That's when I realized who Tennessee really was and I've felt deprived of not getting to know the man.” Beaver has remedied that deprivation by growing close to Tennessee’s literature and legacy. “The more you learn, the more you want to know. And of course, once you start reading some of his short stories, you want to say, oh, how did this become a play? A movie? It just went on from there.”

Beaver’s curiosity has amounted to an unsurpassed museum. “We have the largest collection of photos and memorabilia anywhere in the world and I’m still adding.” Closed during the pandemic, the Tennessee Williams Museum reopened in late June and now welcomes visitors for self-guided tours. Beaver, who is a fount of anecdotes and stories about Tennessee Williams, is available for private tours upon request For Beaver, reopening the museum is a vital part of keeping Williams’ spirit alive and well in the hometown he, and so many of us, have adopted as our own. “Key West is so fortunate to have had this man living here. It’s one of the reasons so many of us have come here to enjoy our lives. He chose Key West and now so have we.”

The Tennessee Williams Museum is located at 513 Truman Ave., and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

NO DETENTION FOR ONE KEY DEER Little guy was hanging around Sugarloaf school

L

aw enforcement reported no detention for one Key deer roaming the grounds of Sugarloaf Middle School recently.

Florida Fish & Wildlife Officer Daniel Jones was sent to the school when a Key deer was seen inside the fence roaming the grounds. Jones arrived along with a Monroe County sheriff’s deputy and Florida Highway Patrol trooper.

The officers worked as a team to corner the Key deer in a hallway at the school. Jones ended up catching the deer as it went to jump by him, and walked it to the nearest exit.

The state trooper made a lasso to secure the deer in case it tried to escape and run into traffic. The uninjured Key deer was released back into the woods nearby.

POLICE ARREST SHERIFF’S DEPUTY Parking problems prompt misdemeanor arrest

A

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested just before midnight on July 11 for misdemeanor theft.

Key West police officers arrested Deputy Ed Swogger, 32, who had parked his personal vehicle in a lot at 511 Truman Ave. Swogger returned to find a parking boot on the tire of his truck. Irritated, and recorded by a security camera, the police report states, Swogger removed the booted tire and replaced it with a spare tire from his truck. He then threw the tire and the boot into the back of his truck and drove down Simonton Street.

Officers ran the pickup truck’s license plate information they had received from the owner of the parking lot, who had booted Swogger’s truck and now wanted his boot back, along with a $60 fine for boot removal.

Key West police dispatchers confirmed that the booted vehicle belonged to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy Ed Swogger. Dispatchers provided Swogger’s home address, where officers found the truck in question backed into the driveway “to conceal the license plate,” the report states.

The parking lot owner arrived and identified Swogger, who told Key West Police, “You guys know me,” when they asked him for identification. Swogger appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, with slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcohol, the report states.

Swogger then told the officers he had been irritated at the parking lot attendant “for taking too long” to tell him how much it would cost to remove the boot. Swogger told officers, “I f----d up.”

But he then told police they would need a search warrant if they wanted to retrieve the boot from the back of his pickup truck.

Swogger’s father, who owns the residence where the truck was parked, gave officers permission to retrieve the boot from his son’s truck.

Swogger was arrested and taken to jail for petty theft.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said, “I always strive to be transparent whether it is good news or bad news when it comes to this agency. Whatever the case, the public will hear it from me first.”

Swogger was hired by MCSO in April 2017.

TARA WHITEHEAD TAKES THE WHEEL AT POINCIANA

T

ara Whitehead will take the reins as principal of Poinciana Elementary for the 2021-22 school year, Monroe County School District Superintendent Theresa Axford announced.

“I have watched Tara Whitehead in the classroom as a teacher and I could see her great talent and the deep level of understanding in the learning process she displayed,” Axford said. “I am pleased to see her move into the principal role at Poinciana Elementary.

Her love of students, her skills of positive behavior management, her willingness to invest time working and supporting teachers and her knowledge of classroom pedagogy will be an asset in this new role.”

Whitehead earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Kent State University and a master’s in educational leadership from the University of North Florida.

She began her teaching career in Jacksonville, where she taught third through fifth grade and enjoyed watching her students’ eyes light up when they mastered their work.

In 2011, she moved to Key West, and began working with the Monroe County School District as a substitute teacher.

The next year, she joined the staff at Key West High School, where she taught earth space science.

Her desire to support all stakeholders in the school community was a driving force in her making the move to assistant principal role at Key West High School, where she was an integral part of moving the school forward. She made the transition to Poinciana Elementary assistant principal last year.

UNITED WAY HELPS BAHAMA VILLAGE MUSIC PROGRAM Grant will fund popular kids’ steel pan band

ahama Village Music Program (BVMP) recently announced that United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) has granted it $4,500 to help fund “House of Pan” Steel Pan Band. This popular outreach program, held at Horace O’Bryant School, serves over 40 students through free steel pan lessons before and after school, led by renowned music educator, Nora Revelin.

“House of Pan” performs throughout the year at various local events including Schooner Wharf’s Lighted Boat Parade and the Willy Wonka Chocolate Festival. They’ve also performed with world famous steel pannist Robert Greenidge, best known for playing with Jimmy Buffett and his song “Volcano.” This popular program not only teaches students how to play steel pan, but also teaches teamwork, collaboration, music theory and rhythm, all while keeping students safe before and after school.

n July 24, the Bubbas: Key West People’s Choice Awards winners will be named at the Key West Theater. But much like Christmas, it is often the anticipation leading up to the event that provides the most fun.

With 85 categories and winners, there is no shortage of friendly competition and intense measures as nominees lobby for votes. But each year, there are just some categories that seemingly pair up three unique nominees who soak up the moment. To promote this year’s 2021 Bubbas, and the event’s support of Wesley House Family Services, we highlight three community favorites (with a unique eye) in the Best Photographer category, which promises to be a close vote no matter who claims the “Bubba” this year.

3. Talking to people. At all.

4. Squint your eyes to get a better idea of basic composition. I learned it in college back when it was all film, and someone told me to squint to get a better visualization of how shooting in black & white works. But I’ve learned it works for several things.

5. Most memorable shoot is probably some of the TDC shoots Mike Marrero and I did back in the day ...15- to 20-person crew, multi-day shoots. They were intense.

Especially one particular shot in front of The Artist House with 10 other people as on-camera “talent.” My most memorable shot may be a lightning strike shot at a wedding on Sunset Key after cocktails, but a second before rushing off to a presidential seating reception.

BRIEFLY New state law prohibits anonymous code complaints Key West’s and Monroe County’s Code Compliance departments can no longer investigate anonymous code compliance violation reports due to the passage of Senate Bill 60 by the Florida Legislature. The bill changed state law to prohibit the investigation of anonymous reports of potential violations of municipal property codes, effective July 1, 2021.

The person reporting the issue is now required to supply their full name and address, and this information will become part of the public record. This applies to submissions made by phone, email, online or in-person to the Code Compliance department.

Health Department donates socks to homeless shelters The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County recently donated almost 170 packs (1,000 pairs) of socks to the Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter and the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition for the Homeless. These items were procured by the Bureau of Epidemiology to encourage education about the COVID-19 vaccine. These organizations also received 200 COVID-19 vaccination rack cards in English, Spanish and Creole with information that details the safety and efficacy of the vaccines. Key West library hosts events for all ages The Key West public library, 700 Fleming St., has several events going on this month. It will host a Hemingway Days literary event on Wednesday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. on the 122nd anniversary of Ernest Hemingway’s birth.

The winning entry in the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition will be announced and read, paired with the Key West Poetry Guild’s reading of “Papa’s Poems” and guild members’ work. The short story competition is directed by author Lorian Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter.

Author Richard Horan will discuss his nonfiction work “Harvest: An Adventure Into the Heart of America’s Family Farms,” at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27.

Finally, the library will mark the end of its summer reading program with a sidewalk chalk festival on Saturday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chalk will be provided or participants may bring their own.

Enroll now for nonprofit leadership ‘boot camp’ The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys is accepting registrations for its 2021 Leadership Success Academy, a “boot camp” for nonprofit board members. The foundation’s signature training program returns Aug. 19 and 20 to coach individuals working with or serving in an advisory capacity with a nonprofit organization or other community group.

The training sessions will be held at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West, 5901 College Road, on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The cost of the program is $100 per person, or $200 for three people from one nonprofit, and includes all sessions, course materials, and lunches.

“This is the 13th year of our program, and we’ve trained more than 500 nonprofit leaders from throughout the Keys from over 100 different nonprofits,” said Jennifer McComb, president and CEO of the foundation. “Our leadership development program is for people who want to effect positive change during their term on a board.”

LONG LIVE ROCK A visit to the Hall of Fame

I

was visiting family last week in Ohio. Despite having been born and raised there, I had never been to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I know, it’s hard to imagine a music junkie such as myself missing that. So we decided to check it out.

Now, I will say this. I have very openly criticized some decisions the hall has made with regard to inductees. More precisely, I’ve disagreed with their decisions to keep some folks out.

For example, do I believe Green Day belongs there? Yes, but they should not have been inducted before such bands as Styx or Little Feat. As of this year, both are still snubs despite scoring Top 20 hits when Green Day members were still in elementary school.

All criticism aside, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame visit is one I will not soon forget. I was a kid in a candy store.

First, the building itself, located just on the outskirts of the downtown area, is just so cool looking. A tour bus was parked out front when we arrived — Johnny Cash’s tour bus, double parked right in front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The nice fella who collected our tickets advised us to start on the bottom floor, where they have the early legends and influences, then work our way up to the fifth floor. (The museum employs a large staff, and everyone we encountered was helpful and extremely friendly.)

On the ground floor, I was immediately impressed and excited to see memorabilia from the early blues artists and other early musical influences.

For a blues lover like myself, it was amazing to see Muddy Waters’ outfit and guitar alongside guitars from Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker and so many other blues heroes. Let’s face it, without Blues there would be no rock & roll. The first floor includes the Jimi Hendrix room. The huge room that’s split between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were also highlights.

ally stuck out were one of Bob Marley’s hats as well as a pad of paper on which Marley scribed the lyrics to his love song “Turn Your Lights Down Low.” There is the outfit Prince wore during his iconic Super Bowl halftime show, and even a pair of torn pants worn by the Revivalists’ front man David Shaw at the Okeechobee Festival in 2017 when Shaw was ... is a local radio injured by hitting his personality and head on a lighting music promoter who loves to share truss. Aside from all the great displays of keepsakes and commemorations, there were some excellent interactive and visual exhibits. On the second floor, visitors can plug guitars into amplifiers and strum away regardless of experience or ability. On the same floor is a studio/ jam room where the house band, The Garage, was set up and playing. Attendees could pick a song to sing with the band. played lead guitar and sang the classic Muddy Waters tune “Got My Mojo Working” with The Garage. What a cool experience.

On the third floor is a theater that shows a 12-minute film featuring highlights of performances from hall of fame induction ceremonies through the years. As expected, the sound system for the film is exceptional.

The highlight for me was the actual Inductee Room, which is broken down from the first inductees in 1986 to the current class of 2021. Each class triggered memories of the artists, bands and music.

As usual, museum visitors must exit through the gift shop. Upon leaving, I found myself in a purple haze of joy and excitement. It was truly worth the trip. If you find yourself in Ohio or need a destination for your next trip, I highly recommend a visit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. I am already planning my next visit.

ack in 1996 Key West fishing captains Nick Malinowsky, Joe Greene and Willy Smith ran their fishing charters out of Oceanside Marina (now Ocean’s Edge.)

They would often see Don Moore, executive director of Monroe Association for Remarkable Citizens (MARC), take some clients fishing in his own boat. They saw the clients’ excitement and wanted to do something special for them.

Enter the MARC Grunt Release Tournament. When Moore died, the captains named the tournament in his honor.

The tournament provides a rare opportunity for clients to fish with professional guides, compete against their peers and spend a day on the water.

Awards are given for the three largest grunts and a host of other categories, including Most Unusual Fish, Hard Luck Story and Best Fish Tale.

Led by Capt. Nick Malinowsky, many of the captains and mates have been donating their time and vessels to the tournament since its inception.

DIGGING DEEP INTO KEY WEST HISTORY Preliminary excavation of Oldest House reveals artifacts

The recent preliminary findings will likely lead to a full excavation next month.

Pottery, glassware and other artifacts were found during a recent preliminary archaeological excavation in the backyard of Key West’s Oldest House, which was built in 1829 and is now a museum.

igging a 2-foot hole in one’s backyard usually wouldn’t warrant a team of student archaeologists from the University of Miami. But then, most backyards don’t date back to 1829 — and they don’t conceal centuries-old dishes, tools, cooking instruments and other common household items that provide a glimpse into Key West’s past and the lives of those who called it home.

Key West’s Oldest House, 322 Duval St., built in 1829, is now a museum and headquarters of the Old Island Restoration Foundation, which operates the house for the state of Florida, which owns the historical resource.

University of Miami anthropology professor Monica Faraldo brought a small team of students to the house on July 10-11 for a preliminary excavation of the large backyard behind the Oldest House.

“This was a preliminary dig, so we dug test holes, just to ensure

that there was something to find,” said Tom Greenwood, a historical consultant for the Oldest House who worked with Faraldo 20 years ago, when she did the same excavation on the Audubon House grounds.

The artifacts found there led to the creation of a new exhibit that recreated the outdoor cook houses that were common in Key West in the 1800s, when the oppressive heat and lack of air-conditioning would have made indoor kitchens, with their open fires, unbearably hot.

“After such an exciting and successful project at the Audubon House, here we are 20 years later doing it again at the Oldest House,” Greenwood said. “It’s really eyeopening to discover tangible, reallife objects that were used by real people so long ago.”

The test pits proved quite productive, with the unearthing of numerous early to mid-19th-century pottery and china shards, he said.

“Some of them are a very similar blue and white pattern to what was found during the Audubon House dig. These clues show us the economic status and lifestyle accoutrements of the first American settlers

in Key West in the 1820s and ’30s,” Greenwood said.

The goal is to match the recovered shards to actual intact antique objects. Those items can be added to the Oldest House’s interior.

“For example, we’d love to set the dining room table in the same way the American settlers in Key West did,” Greenwood said. “We are also planning to restore the interior rooms and furnishings back to their original 19th-century splendor, with period furniture and textiles.”

Greenwood and Faraldo will seek approval from the state to conduct a full excavation of the backyard next month.

LEMUEL OTIS, MONROE COUNTY’S FIRST SHERIFF?

F

or every prominent early Key West resident immortalized on buildings and street signs, scores of lesser-known residents go virtually unrecognized. One of these individuals is Lemuel Otis. In what may be the earliest record of Otis in Key West, an 1826 document identified him as master of the schooner Amanda Malvina. Like many who have come to the Florida Keys, it seems like he visited the island and decided to stay.

By 1828, Otis is referred to as Key West’s jailer. He was, apparently, only a part-time resident, as the same year Otis is recorded as living on Indian Key and doing a little farming on nearby Tea Table Key. Accounts of Otis would begin appearing in newspapers, repeatedly, in 1829. In one event, Charles Greene was indicted for resisting when Otis attempted to serve a legal paper. The event likely occurred in Key West.

In another event that year, one that found Otis on the other end of the judicial spectrum, he was arrested for assault and battery on a man named Culling E. Arledge. According to Florida Territory documents, “There having been no writ issued in the cause, it is ordered by the Court that it be stricken off the docket and dismissed.”

On Nov. 15, 1829, one newspaper account states that Otis was indicted for the crime of permitting Pely Messer and Henry Webb, prisoners in his custody as jailer, to escape. 1829 is also the year that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office identifies Lemuel Otis as the county’s first sheriff. The circumstances surrounding that designation are a little fuzzy. As the formal position of sheriff is an elected position, the documentation asserting the fact has proven as elusive as a Skunk Ape. Certainly, he was affiliated with some degree of law enforcement.

What is also clear is that he was not above the law and capable of being arrested.

For a variety of reasons, his name would continue to appear in newspaper accounts.

One of the more notable instances was a declaration he made regarding his wife. Otis exchanged wedding vows with Henrietta in December 1834. The two were living on Indian Key, where Otis is said to have worked as a carpenter. It would prove a short-lived union.

Born in Germany circa 1818 and a child (by today’s standards) at the time, there is no indication as to the source of her need to depart their marital bed.

On July 25, 1835, Mr. Otis filed the following public announcement in the Key West Register: “Whereas my wife Henrietta has quitted my bed and board, I hereby forewarn all persons from harboring or trusting her on my account, for I will BRAD not pay any debts of her BERTELLI contracting.”

Back on Indian Key, Otis is listed in an 1836 Election Notion announcing the posts of Monroe County Clerk, Sheriff, and Coroner. The election was held on Feb. 1, 1836. Three voting precincts were identified, one at each of the three major settlements: Key West, Indian Key and Cape Florida. At Indian Key, the voting center was held at Jacob Housman’s general store. Residents Housman, Charles Howe, and Lemuel Otis served as inspectors.

While there are no references to Otis acting as the sheriff, he has been identified as a justice of the peace from 1836-1842. It is important to keep in mind that, as of 1836, Indian Key was no longer part of Monroe County.

In terms of the island chain, Monroe County stopped at Bahia Honda. Above Bahia Honda, the islands had become part of the newly

formed Dade County. It seems that if Otis was living in Dade County, he was likely serving the county of Dade and not Monroe.

With that idea in mind, according to Territorial Papers of the United States dated Feb. 17, 1840, there is documentation identifying Lemuel Otis serving as the Dade County sheriff. Whether or not Otis formally served as the first Monroe County sheriff or not, it has been documented that he served as, if not the first, then one of the first Dade County sheriffs.

Otis would barely survive 1840. In the early morning hours of August 7, 1840, he was sleeping in a small room above Housman’s general store. When Indians attacked the island during the Seminole War, Otis attempted to escape the store and was struck in the leg by a musket ball. Wounded, he managed to make his way to the island’s edge and climb into one of the Indian canoes. Loss of blood from the gunshot made him too weak to paddle, so the canoe just floated away until it was discovered the following day afloat by a Navy ship. Lemuel Otis made a full, though not lengthy, recovery.

Eighteen months later, on March 2, 1842, he died for unrelated reasons.

The mission requires the removal of 20 mooring buoys on July 14 so the floating, five-camera system (SQUID-5) can safely navigate slow passes across the entire site, similar to mowing grass on a football field. Fourteen buoys will remain available along the reef face within the SPA. The public is asked to remain clear of the central work area (buoy numbers 2 through 21) during survey activity. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) will be reinstalling buoys on July 19.

FKNMS has identified 10 alternate locations near Looe Key that provide interesting snorkel and dive opportunities, including Newfound Harbor Sanctuary Preservation Area, another of the Mission: Iconic Reef restoration sites. For specific coordinates and descriptions of the alternate sites, visit www.floridakeys.noaa.gov.

This undertaking is a critical part of the $100 million Mission: Iconic Reefs restoration program, a partnership among federal, state and conservation and nonprofit organizations and the local community in one of the largest commitments to coral restoration in the world. The work will allow NOAA to accurately quantify progress of the effort to revitalize the reef for future generations. By avoiding this site for a handful of days, the public will be providing critical support for the restoration effort by helping to expedite the USGS mapping work.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary has managed the mooring buoy program since its establishment 40 years ago. Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area features 39 of the nearly 500 firstcome, first-served mooring buoys throughout FKNMS. Vessels are allowed to anchor elsewhere within the Sanctuary Preservation Area when mooring buoys are unavailable — but only on sand.

Community Foundation names officers

usanne Woods has been reappointed chair of the board of governors of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.

"I'm honored to continue to play a leadership role in the Community Foundation's important work,” said Woods. “We’ve had significant accomplishments working together with our generous donors and vital nonprofit partners, and I believe we are essential now more than ever as we build an even better future for our Keys community.”

In addition to Woods, the foundation’s newly elected executive committee members are Marian Buccafurni (vice chair - grants), Ron Burd (vice chair - governance), John DeWald (vice chair – investment), Will Langley (vice chair - development), Thomas Swain (treasurer and vice chair - finance), Rosi Ware (vice chair - marketing), and Jodi Weinhofer (secretary).

Woods’ career includes serving as provost and professor of English at Wheaton College in Massachusetts; visiting professor of English at the University of Miami; senior advisor for the Council of Independent Colleges; vice president of academic affairs at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania; and professor of English and associate dean of the faculty at Brown University in Rhode Is;and. She has served on the boards of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts and the Key West Literary Seminar and as senior warden (board chair) at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Woods will serve as board chair through June 2022.

Foundation officers are appointed for one-year terms.

This year, the foundation is celebrating 25 years of connecting people, resources and needs through philanthropy throughout the Keys. Over $31 million in community grants have been awarded since 1996.

THE SECRET LIVES OF YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS

I MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

t would be tough to be a yellow-billed cuckoo in the Florida Keys if you viewed yourself through the eyes of a birdwatcher, because, well, you’d always just be a damn disappointment.

This is what I was thinking when I saw one fly across the road on Boca Chica the other day.

The disappointment wouldn’t be your fault. It would be the fault of the very similar-looking attention hog, the mangrove cuckoo. That’s the one birdwatchers always want to see.

It’s not because they are terribly beautiful or charismatic creatures – they are various shades of brown and white and always look a little hunched.

While some of their brown tones are really quite nice, they’re not in the visually stunning class of, say, flamingos or frigatebirds.

Mangrove cuckoos command the attention of birdwatchers because they’re so rarely seen. The excitement they generate is in exact proportion to their scarcity. They are primarily a Caribbean and South American species. In North America they can only be found in extreme South Florida. Traditionally, people come to the Keys to find them, though they can also be found in parts of the Everglades and Sanibel

Island.

Their scarcity is compounded by their skulkiness. These sneaky birds spend their lives avoiding attention of any kind. As a result, if you go looking for them, even in a place you know they nest, you are likely to fail.

Arguably the yellow-billed cuckoo is a better looking bird.

Where the belly of a mangrove cuckoo is kind of a dingy, tobaccotinged taupe, the yellow-billed cuckoo’s is a clean, dress-shirt white. Where the mangrove cuckoo’s wingtips are a slightly dark shade of umber, the yellow-billed cuckoo’s are reddish and tinged with a warm cinnamon glow. (The wingtips are usually my go-to for telling them apart.)

Yellow-billed cuckoos are a bit less skulky and a lot more common, breeding across the eastern two-thirds of the U.S., from the Keys to the Canadian border. I’ve actually seen hundreds of them in a single day during migration.

Disappointing birdwatchers with their commonness probably doesn’t bother yellow-billed cuckoos much. As the kids say, they DGAF. They’ve got their own lives to live.

The cuckoo family is a cosmopolitan one, with species of cuckoos found on every continent but Antarctica. The name comes from the call of the common cuckoo of Europe, which is probably the most well-known bird call in the world – two simple, clear notes that sound just like the name, and are easy to replicate with small bellows and pipes inside an ornately carved clock.

Even before the clocks, though, the name was somehow associated with craziness and mental incapacity, which always struck me as strange, as there are so many bird calls that sound so much crazier. (See: pretty much any species of gull. Also: peacocks.)

While cuckoos are not, in actuality, innately prone to delusions or diminished mental capacity, they can be viewed as devious, immoral creatures – at least in human terms. Consider their oft-used breeding tactic of brood parasitism, or laying their eggs in the nests of other species of birds and tricking them into raising them.

Fifty-six of the 127 cuckoo species in the world practice this to varying degrees. The common cuckoo, for instance, is all in. It doesn’t build nests and it doesn’t form pair bonds, instead mating with multiple partners. (The word “cuckold” is derived from this

fact, though inaccurately and no doubt somewhat misogynistically, it’s used as a pejorative for males being cheated on by females.) The female common cuckoo expends far more energy scouting suitable host nests than worrying about whom it mates with.

Common cuckoos are known to lay their eggs in the nests of over 100 different species of birds. To ensure the success of their chicks they use a few evolutionary dirty tricks – the cuckoo chicks hatch earlier and grow more quickly than the host species’ chicks.

The cuckoo chicks then often lift the other eggs up with their rumps and push them out of the nest, thus ensuring a greater share of care and feeding from the duped parents. A common cuckoo will lay eggs in 12 to 22 different nests each year.

Here in the Keys, mangrove cuckoos may or may not be brood parasites. They are so secretive, and so little is known about their lives and habits, it is impossible to say.

At first glance, yellow-billed cuckoos live largely respectable lives of avian domesticity. They’re thought to be monogamous, or at least serially monogamous. Males and females build the nest together, usually selecting a site well concealed by foliage. The female usually lays between one and six eggs, and the parents split brooding duties during the day, taking two-hour shifts, unless it is raining.

Then they wait for it to stop before switching. (The males tend to do the brooding at night.)

The parents also share the job of feeding their young, though not for long. These birds can raise a clutch in just 17 days – eggs are incubated for 9 to 11 days, and the fledglings depart the nest 7 to 9 days after that. It’s mind-bogglingly fast.

This speed allows them to live a double life as “facultative, interspecific brood parasites,” a.k.a. birds that lay their eggs in other species’ nests, but only when the situation is right. Yellow-bills have been known to hijack the nests of American robins, gray catbirds, wood thrushes, other songbirds, and several species of doves.

What triggers this is still unclear, but it is thought to occur when there is an unusual abundance of food – for instance, during the hatch year of 17-year cicadas.

It makes you think: maybe they deserve a little more attention than they get in these parts.

EVENTS ARE BACK Inaugural Florida Keys BrewBQ on tap this weekend

M

y friend and luthier Dean Nickless (he builds amazing acoustic guitars and takes great care of my herd) recently shared a pertinent bit of wisdom with me. He told me about the two main side effects from the COVID-19 vaccines, and they are: relief and euphoria. He’s not kidding. As Monroe County is in the top three counties statewide for total vaccinated population, we are getting back to our version of normal. That’s a really great thing.

As we come out of the pandemic, it’s so wonderful to have real honestto-BBQ-goodness events back. There’s a big one on tap for this weekend — the inaugural Florida Keys BrewBQ. A celebration of barbecue, craft beer, and community, the BrewBQ also has some pretty good live music on tap as well.

Adrienne Z and I kick off the event at noon on Saturday as Jade Storm unplugged. We’re both local singersongwriters, and we’ll be playing a mix of our originals with some really cool covers. Adrienne sings like an angel and writes amazing songs; she’ll be playing songs from her best-selling CD, “Chameleons.” I’ll be playing songs from my brand new “After The Storm” CD as well as my “Keys Disease” and live CDs, and I’ll have plenty of copies there for sale.

The really great thing about playing with Adrienne is being able to sing harmony with her. I’ve been told we have a really nice vocal blend, and as a singer, it’s just really wonderful to be able to sing harmony.

Beginning at 4 is the set from Nashville singer-songwriter-producer Bridgette Tatum. She was recently profiled in these pages; suffice it to say that she’ll bring her songs and talent (as well as her #1 country hit for Jason Aldean, “She’s Country”) to the BrewBQ stage.

That evening, get set to rock out with Rock Show. This band played our most recent Seafood Festival, and they lit up the stage with note-perfect renditions of your favorite classic rock songs from the ’70s and ’80s. This group faithfully recreates everyone’s favorites, from Pink Floyd to Guns N’ Roses. High energy, high velocity, high impact rock and roll will be the perfect complement to savory barbecue and cold craft beer.

By the way — did I mention that there are going to be 20 craft beers featured? Not only that, but big barbecue rigs from Battle Rig BBQ, Pig In

Sunday’s musical show kicks off with the talented acoustic duo of Terry Cassidy and Mike Bailey. Cleveland native Cassidy made his way to Key West for a two-week vacation and never left.

His island lifestyle brought inspiration when it came to writing songs which can be described as Island folk music. Bailey, originally from the Jersey Shore, is also a guitar player, singer and songwriter. His inspiration stems from listening to the music of the ’60s. About five years ago, they got together during open mic sessions at Boondocks and they’ve been playing together ever since.

What would a BrewBQ festival be without some blues? The Original Lady A Blues Band takes the stage at 2:30 p.m. for some amazing classic blues and rock. Featuring the Original Lady A on vocals and Ric “Bluesfuze” Arra on lead guitar and vocals, this band will go from gritty heartfelt blues to some amazing Eric Clapton covers. They’ve been entertaining around the world and in South Florida for many years — we’re lucky to have them as part of the BrewBQ. This new summer event is hosted by the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce, and is brought to you by the City of Marathon and the event’s generous local business sponsors.

Our community is ready to resume a somewhat normal existence again, and this event can be the kickoff party for getting back to our sunny tropical lifestyles.

I really hope you can come out to the BrewBQ this weekend. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and the Keys deserve a great new event to celebrate our resilience, our perseverance, and our sense of community. Besides, there’s barbecue and craft beer. And great live music. I hope to see you this weekend!

Pigeon Key celebrates flippin’ the switch

n July 8, the Pigeon Key Foundation hosted a special party on the island in the middle of the 7 Mile Bridge. The facility — historic and educational and open to the public — recently acquired electric utility access. Previously, the island depended on generators and then solar power, but now with “pole power” it can regear toward hosting larger events that require bigger draws from the grid. (Operations on the island will continue to use partial solar power.) Partygoers were a blend of Pigeon Key board members and supporters.

The good news keeps coming: the apparel company MANG recently announced it will partner with the foundation to replant 1,000 mangroves on Pigeon Key on Tuesday, July 27 to mitigate soil loss. MANG grows the mangrove seedlings at a South Florida nursery.

Kelly McKinnon, executive director of the Pigeon Key Foundation, estimated that the island lost about 80% of its mangroves to Hurricane Irma. MANG, which plants a mangrove for every product it sells, is donating all the seedlings at no cost to the Foundation.
