Conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by Cooper Tires, a survey of 2,000 respondents found that over half of Floridians (55%) plan on vacationing within the Sunshine State this summer. Moreover, the average respondent said they want to drive no more than 115 miles to get to their destinations, and have an average of three road trips already planned.

THOMPSON DECLARES CANDIDACY Local Realtor to run for Marathon City Council

Rodriguez makes rounds to talk about the legislative session

n June 11, Lynny Thompson formally filed the papers with the Supervisor of Elections Office to run for a seat on the Marathon City Council. The election is in November 2021. “Our island, Marathon, is growing very fast,” Thompson said. “I want to be a voice for others on how we can do that, but still retain the quaint style of life.” Thompson has lived in Marathon since 1971, with a brief interruption when she lived in New England. She graduated from Marathon High School and has a long and varied career in hospitality and in real estate. “I’ve also owned a rental cleaning business for 30 years, bought and sold real estate, opened Garden Gourmet in Marathon and Garden Cafe and Spanish Gardens Cafe in the Upper Keys,” Thompson said. “Although I’ve been a licensed Realtor since 1995, I have only been active in the last four years.” Thompson is affiliated with Key Colony Realty. She is also a board member for the Marathon and Lower Keys Association of Realtors and a volunteer for FIRM (Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe) and is a former Take Stock in Children mentor. In addition to growth, Thompson said her top issues are vacation rentals and preserving the Keys’ unique environment.

There will be two empty seats up for grabs in the November election. Marathon Vice Mayor Mark Senmartin has termed out. Current Mayor Luis Gonzalez said he plans to formally file for reelection soon. “I think I’ve been a voice for the citizens; there haven’t been any issues or concerns that I haven’t followed through on,” said Gonzalez, who is still serving his first term. Gonzalez said among his top priorities are finishing the redevelopment of the skate park and splash pad, as well as The Quay property. “Most importantly, I want to continue to find that balance so that residents feel comfortable calling Marathon home,” Gonzalez said. Marathon Council elections are at-large, meaning that regardless of the number of candidates, the top vote getters are elected to the open seats. CORRECTION Baptist Health’s Fishermen’s Community Hospital is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 1, at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the grand opening of the new facility. The invitation is for dignitaries and health system executives only, and not the general public, as previously reported by the Keys Weekly Newspaper.

ccompanied by her two young sons and an aide, Florida Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, made a whirlwind tour through the Middle Keys on June 15 to talk about Tallahassee. Normally, she would have been accompanied by state Rep. Jim Mooney, but he was called away for a family emergency. Nevertheless, she used her time to tout the strides made in the state capital on behalf of Florida Keys constituents. “The legislation session was better than expected,” Rodriguez told the crowd at the monthly Marathon Chamber of Commerce meeting. “We went into the session with a $3 billion deficit and because our open economy did so well under Gov. Ron DeSantis, we were able to close with a balanced budget and a $9 billion reserve.” She highlighted several state grants to local entities: $500,000 for AHEC, $200,000 for The Guidance Center as well as money for Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys. “But the crown jewel in funding,” Rodriguez said, “was the $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act.” The state legislature enacted the Florida Keys Stewardship Act in 2016 and its funding varies from year to year — sometimes $4 million, sometimes $6 million. “Historically, I think this is the first year we’ve received the full amount.” The money pays for programs that protect the Florida Keys’ unique and fragile resources, including its coral reef, seagrass beds, and mangroves. Florida Keys communities also use the funding to implement water quality projects to protect these resources. Rodriguez, a Republican, also highlighted the state’s tax-free holidays, legislation she’s wellacquainted with as the chairperson for the state Finance and Tax Committee. The Disaster Preparedness holiday has already passed, but two more are upcoming: the annual Back to School tax holiday from July 31 to Aug. 9, and “Freedom Week” from July 1-7. Its purpose is to encourage spending on recreational and cultural activities as pandemic restrictions disappear. continued on the next page

“Floridians can buy camping or boating gear without paying taxes, or even buy outdoor concert tickets,” Rodriguez said. The senator also told the crowd of Middle Keys business owners and executives about passing legislation designed to protect industry from lawsuits filed by clients and employees who might claim they caught COVID-19 in business or on business property. The Florida Legislature also passed Senate Bill 50 that does two things: charges state tax on remote sellers who collect more than $100,000 per year, an “internet sales” tax, and lowers the business rent tax from 5.5% to 2%, but only after the state’s unemployment fund balance is rebuilt to about $4 billion. Rodriguez said that lowering taxes is always a good thing, and that leveling the playing field

BECOMING LAW GOVERNOR SIGNS FLURRY OF BILLS IN RECENT WEEKS

A

flurry of bills passing through the Florida legislative chambers this session were signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in recent weeks. Some address insurance reform in the state, while others assist servicemembers in workforce training and ongoing issues at Key Biscayne. Earlier this month, DeSantis took pen to paper on the state’s budget for fiscal year 2022, which starts July 1. In the budget, $20 million was secured for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act and $5 million for land acquisition in record funding in the program’s five-year existence. A transportation bill passing the House and Senate does everything from allowing governing bodies to abandon certain roads and rights-of-way to community development districts to vehicles and equipment displaying flashing lights. It also seeks to overturn Key West’s vote to limit the size of cruise ships entering the port. Senate Bill 1194 awaits action from DeSantis, and the Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships is watching closely.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signs three military- and veteran-related bills into law during a June 4 press conference in Ponte Vedra Beach. GOVERNOR’S OFFICE/Contributed

“The governor wants cruise ships sailing on Florida’s beautiful waters again and so do we,” said Arlo Haskell, treasurer for Safer, Cleaners Ships. “All we are saying is send us your smaller ships so we can hold on to the dramatic water quality improvements we’ve seen over the past 15 months.” On June 11, DeSantis signed Senate Bill 76, which includes provisions protecting consumers from unlicensed adjusting and contracting and solicitation fraud. According to FIRM, these provisions will be a deterrent to out-of-state contractors looking to cash in after a storm. Legislation also expressly disallows contractors, public adjusters, and companies from using prohibited advertisements that encourage Floridians to make an insurance claim for roof damage. Those violating the law face up to a $10,000 fine. “Since my first days in office, I have been committed to doing whatever it takes to reduce the burden of property insurance on Florida families,” DeSantis said. “That includes signing into law historic reforms to the assignment of benefits process and appointing principled justices to our state courts.”

among business owners who operate on the internet and those with brick and mortar establishments is only fair. A former City of Doral elected official, Rodriguez told the crowd she understands their frustration with recent threats to “home rule,” or local governments’ ability to tailor laws to their needs. She said she and her colleague Mooney fought hard to keep established swim zones from being eliminated in neighborhoods like Port Antigua. As for the cruise ship bill, which struck down Key West’s ability to establish criteria for the type of ships that can enter the harbor, she said she did not prevail. “I voted with our residents. Unfortunately, my colleagues voted to undo Key West’s wishes. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” Rodriguez said.

A proposal within the bill to create a roof reimbursement schedule didn’t make the final bill. As a result, homeowners will receive full reimbursement they’re entitled to receive. Legislation originally had a schedule of depreciation for roofs older than 10 years: 70% replacement value for a metal roof type; 40% replacement value for a concrete tile and clay tile roof type; 40% replacement value for a wood shake and wood shingle roof type; and 25% replacement value for all other roof types. On the environmental front, DeSantis signed House Bill 1177 to address ongoing issues at Biscayne Bay — a vital resource to the economy and ecology of southeast Florida. Specifically, the bill creates a commission that will look to bring stakeholders, from the federal level to local government, together to bolster efforts to protect the bay. Legislation accompanies $20 million in the budget for the bay facing major pollution problems. “The bay contains the largest passenger port in the world, is an international sailing destination, and plays a critical role in the health of Florida’s coral reef,” said Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez. “The bay and reef annually provide well over $20 billion in shoreline protection, fisheries habitat, and recreational opportunities.” DeSantis also recently signed three military- and veteranrelated bills into law to establish a “Purple Star Campus Program.” Bills are geared to help servicemembers gain workforce training and enhance veterans’ preference in hiring. The program designates a military liaison to directly support families; updates the school website with resources for military students and families and offers a student-led transition program to help military students acclimate into a school, among other supportive measures. Senate Bill 922 gives state and political subdivisions the ability to waive certain postsecondary educational requirements for employment for eligible servicemembers and veterans. It also enhances point preferences given to veterans and their family members when a numerically based selection process is used for hiring. A Senate bill related to the emergency preparedness and response fund was vetoed on June 8. In a memo, DeSantis said he recommended creation of the fund with the intention of obtaining funding of $1 billion from the coronavirus state and local fiscal recovery fund. DeSantis said federal rules won’t allow use of funds for the preparedness fund, which led to the veto.

The Crane House from its good side before the renovation, hiding the damage from its slow decline. CONTRIBUTED

THE ‘PINK HOUSE’ IS CHANGING COLOR Grant provides funding for major remodel at Crane Point ANTHONY GUNTERT

I

www.keysweekly.com

n an all too familiar sad sight, visitors to the Crane Point Hammock Museum & Nature Trail have for years reached the terminus of the trails and gazed upon the old bones of a magnificent structure, the Crane House. Modeled after the styles of legendary American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the house’s design is unique to the Keys, with many distinct art pieces hidden around the house such as the Cranes’ beloved dogs that can be seen carved where the ceiling begins in an upstairs room. The house has been nominated for historic designation due to the important legacy of the Crane family in preserving the last pure hardwood hammock in Marathon from development in the ’50s, as well as its often unknown architectural importance. Finally, after years slowly wasting away, a state grant alongside private donations totaling more than $319,000 has given the property new life since construction began last month. Crane Point’s CEO, Charlotte Quinn, said that “the Crane House is being fully rehabbed on the outside and is set to finish in July. Although the inside won’t be renovated at this time, it’ll be opened up for the public to admire again. They will be able to see the way the Cranes originally lived, as well as the original indoor colors of pinks, grays, lime greens and yellows.” Everything will be repaired as it was made, including repainting the original outdoor colors of cream with a hint of yellow and dark brown trim. All windows and doors will also be rehabbed to mint condition with the old ramp and the courtyard being revamped into the beautiful space the Cranes would’ve experienced back in the house’s heyday of the ’50s.

“To me,” said Quinn, “the work that they're doing is just absolutely amazing because the house was in very, very bad shape.” Along with the newly accessible upstairs living areas, what used to be a lab on the lower floor is being turned into an air-conditioned classroom for summer camps and groups. Crane Point’s many walking paths, natural attractions and places of interest have all had updates as well, giving an injection of much needed vigor to this natural oasis. Since November 2020, the City of Marathon had been working with Crane Point to secure a state grant to rejuvenate a key piece of Marathon history at the tip of the beloved nature preserve. George Garrett, board chairman of Crane Point and Marathon city manager, spoke on the grant bids’ travels through the state review process in Tallahassee. (While the ticket was low on the priority list, its passionate and well-written form helped it make the cut, Garrett said.) After a lengthy process, the Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources, assisted by the Florida Historical Commission, approved the proposal written by Crane Point board member and City of Marathon Planning Director Brian Shea to restore the historic Crane House to its glory days. Further supported by a sponsorship from the Friends of The Florida Land and Sea Trust and Crane Point Hammock, architecture firm RK&K and contractors All Keys Construction have taken on the important job to reface the structure to be true to its original form and function using the ingredients of the era the house was built. Quinn hopes there are more grants to come, to could pay to rehab the upstairs space into something like a small wedding or business venue. “We're just thrilled to have the funding and have (the house) look the way it's supposed to look, have it be safe where people will be able to explore inside,” she said.

For more about terns, see page 34. MARATHON LOCALS ADVISED TO BE AWARE OF BABY TERNS NEAR GOVERNMENT CENTER It is that time of year when those visiting Monroe County’s Marathon Government Center may be seeing least terns, a protected bird, flying around and nesting on the roof. The birds are well known in the Florida Keys for nesting this time of year on gravel-covered rooftops. During the next few weeks, the chicks will begin testing out their wings, but some may take a few tries to get the hang of it. “Sometimes they manage to fly off of the top of the roof and land in the parking lot unharmed, but they can’t get back up to the roof,” said Monroe County Marine Planner Brittany Burtner, whose office is in the building. “Normally, it wouldn’t be a problem and the parents would continue to feed them where they are on the ground; however, they’re very vulnerable to predation and the cars in the parking lots.” With the permission of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and training to do so, Burtner received permission to replace any baby least terns to

the government center roof. If you are in the parking areas of the Marathon Government Center or the adjacent state building and see a baby least tern on the ground, please contact Burtner at 305-2892805 for her assistance. For more information on rooftop nesting, visit the FWC site at flshorebirdalliance.org/get-involved/. NEW VACCINE SITES OPEN IN THE KEYS Monroe County has multiple upcoming walk-in, no-appointment-necessary COVID-19 vaccination events this month. The first is a one-day event at Bernstein Park on Stock Island from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 19. Walgreens will be administering the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The other event runs through Friday, June 25 at Marathon City Hall from 10 am. To 6 p.m. Again, no appointment is necessary, and medical personnel will be administering Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson. Children, ages 12-17, will receive the Pfizer vaccine with parental consent. Proof of residency is not required. For more information, visit monroe.flhealth.gov/vax.

‘OUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS UNDER SIEGE’

BOCC DEBATES SOLUTIONS TO COUNTERACT CONGESTION AT KEY LARGO BEACH

A

A still from a recent video taken by Monroe County staff shows the crowded conditions of the tiny beach at Sunset Point Park 2 in Key Largo at MM 95, from the tents in the park to the cars on the residential street. The video noted that this was a “regular weekend,” not a holiday. MONROE COUNTY/Contributed

The residents neighboring the Sunset Point Park 2 beach have resorted to putting out their own signs to control the traffic.

Residents in the neighborhood say that at times the street next to the Sunset Point Park 2 beach in Key Largo at MM 95 is so crowded with tourists’ vehicles that their own cars can’t get through, much less emergency vehicles.

t least 10 Key Largo residents unleashed a barrage of complaints at the June 16 Monroe County BOCC meeting about the day-tripper congestion problem in their neighborhood by Sunset Point Park 2 at MM 95. In response, the board asked county staff to research law enforcement solutions for no-parking signs for the upcoming holiday weekend, and the board decided that action will be taken on this problem at a special BOCC meeting on Monday, June 21 at 10 a.m. at the Marathon Government Center. “Our neighborhood is under siege, and we are begging you for help,” said resident Tamra Green, who lives close to the park. “It’s the death of a community. We can’t use our own neighborhood any more. I only use my yard.” Other residents spoke in support of Commissioner Mike Forster’s presentation in front of the Board of County Commissioners about Sunset Point Park 2, and they even applauded when he finished the presentation. Forster showed video and slides detailing the problem. Sunset Point Park 2 has a tiny pocket beach for public use on the open water at the end of Bay Drive in a residential neighborhood. The park is 60 feet wide and extends about 200 feet past the paved road to a sandy beach at the water’s edge. The area is being suggested by hotels as a destination for guests and is used recreationally by daytrippers who pitch tents, use grills and bring coolers of alcohol. Only six parking spaces are provided at the edge of the park, but visitors cram their cars throughout Bay Drive and neighboring streets. The speakers at the BOCC meeting complained that they can’t get down the street to their houses on a busy weekend, and they are concerned that emergency vehicles also won’t be able to get through. Residents have resorted to putting out their own “No Parking” and “Slow Down” signs. “I purchased this property for beach access. We can’t do that any more,” said resident Lucy Given. “Neighbors have witnessed people using their yards as toilets and trespassing by day-trippers to dump trash.”

Per the county, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous complaints over the years. Neighbor Richard Brindle said he has counted at least 75 people on the little beach on a typical weekend, and he asked if the county could close the park on the Fourth of July. Other suggested solutions included installing no-parking signs and speed bumps, and possibly leasing the beach to the Sunset Point community association to prevent access to the public. Speaker Sue Heim was opposed to that solution, because it would prevent other local taxpayers from using the beach. “I don’t think giving it to an entitled group of people is a justification for me not using it,” she said. Deborah Owens said her neighborhood “now resembles Disney World” and that the visitors engage in verbal altercations with residents. She suggested that the county divert day-trippers to Rowell’s Waterfront Park by developing it and charging fees for visitors in order to recover the cost of the development. In the end, after much discussion among the commissioners, county attorney Bob Shillinger said he would ask staff to draft a resolution for no-parking zones for the entire neighborhood, then research what it would take for off-duty personnel to enforce the no-parking rules for Fourth of July weekend. Then the county commissioners will take action at a special meeting on Monday, June 21. Upon hearing that the commissioners would take action on Monday, the Sunset Point Park neighbors applauded once again.

FATHER’S I DAY 2021

t’s no joke how much we love our Keys dads. And certainly, these men need a sense of humor and a sense of adventure to raise authentic island kids. The Keys Weekly is proud to highlight these he-men tackling the toughest job of all, while also providing a side helping of Bad Dad Jokes. (According to the Urban Dictionary, a “Dad Joke” is an indescribably cheesy and/or dumb joke made by a father to his children.) Photos by BARRY GAUKEL/Keys Weekly and contributed

Ernie Barquin is a human flotation device for his three kids at Sombrero Beach. Isabella, 9, Colt, 5 and Catalina, 8, say they love swimming with dad.

Dennis Alvarez’s daughters — Melissa and Lissa — said any time with dad is a good time. “We like fishing, barbecuing … anything with dad is a fun adventure!”

Yosvel Arencibia and his sons hang out at Marathon Community Park on a recent weekend. Sons Justin, 4, and Jayden, 7, said they like their special outings. “We love to go to the park and play soccer.”

BAD DAD JOKE NO. 1

It’s a dad play date. Doug Collier, left, and John Morrissey, right, take the kids fishing — Mason Collier, Travis Hogan, Brayden Morrissey. Happy Father’s Day, fathers!

Q. What kind of music do the planets listen to? A. Nep-tunes!

Three generations including Aubelo Cordova, Eddie and 1-year-old “Capt. Morgan,” who keeps everyone on their toes. “Our family is so grateful for the love and sacrifices my dad has made to provide for our family,” said his daughter, Lisi. “As a life-long fisherman he has instilled a strong work ethic in each of us. Happy Father’s Day, Dad! We love you!”

MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 17, 2021

FATHER’S DAY 2021 Ronald Guntert, second from right, gets five stars from his sons Anthony, 21, and Ross and Rolf, twin brothers aged 36. Together they agree: “We love his ever-present and knowledgeable advice, his dad humor and his unyielding integrity and support that lets us know he always has our back.”

Sedona, 13, and Ruger, 11, share an active lifestyle with their dad, Alex Dorst. “We love sailing, horseback riding and really just doing any water sports with Dad.” Steve Degnan is new to the dad game with son Ethan, less than 2 years old, but it’s going great. “We really like doing anything together — fishing, boating. Everything’s fun with dad.”

BAD DAD JOKE NO. 2 Q: Why do seagulls fly over the sea? A: If they flew over the bay they’d be called bagels.

Cesar Mendez has two appreciative children — Oriana, 19, and Leo, 14. They said their dad is their hero and a supportive hero at that. “We always look forward to spending time with him. He’s got a great sense of humor, works hard for everything we have and is the absolute best friend anyone could make. One of our favorite memories growing up was him teaching us how to snorkel the reef. ... It’s always a fun time with dad!” Mark Matthis cradles his grandson, Sebastian Avelino Arias, now two months old. The Marathon mechanic of Island Service is ready to teach the next generation how to fix everything! Happy (Grand) Father’s Day, Mark!

John Kotch may run Sunset Grille & Raw Bar, but kids Casen, 9, and Capri, 13 months, set the tone at home. This Sunday Casen will assist his dad with Sunday Funday at the Grille!

Happy Father’s Day to two of Marathon’s leading citizens — Ronald J. Konrath and Greg Konrath!

FATHER’S DAY 2021

On a recent trip to visit family and friends in Michigan, Castaway proprietor John Mirabella taught his 4-year-old son, Ian, how to “eliminate” flies.

Let’s play, Dad! Liam, 6, and Julian, 5, hang out with dad Conner Safford on a recent afternoon at Marathon Community Park. They told the Keys Weekly, “We like playing soccer, baseball and going to the park with dad.”

Marathon Chamber of Commerce CEO Dan Samess is always at the ready to play games or provide an assist with any troubles (if needed) for daughters Ava, 9, and Emily, 8. “Dad is always there to help us with everything,” they said.

BAD DAD JOKE NO. 3 Q: What’s Forrest Gump’s Facebook password? A: 1forest1.

Eli and Avery, both 7, share the adventure gene with dad Jarrett Siems, photographed recently at the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters in Marathon. “We really like playing video games and going on trips and adventures.”

Kevin Yeider is a commercial fisherman and a born-and-raised Conch who hopes to teach his two little Conchs, Shilo and Carter, everything he knows about the ocean and true Keys living. He will likely spend Father’s Day indulging in good food and enjoying time with his family on the water.

Seize the day. James Williams and son James Williams Jr. treat the family to a Jet Ski adventure. Pictured from left are “Junior,” daughter Allison, wife Rebecca, “Senior” and James Williams III.

Lisa Vredenburgh said her husband, Bob Vredenburgh, is a wonderful father to Sam, 27, and Mike, 29. “Bob has always been an incredible role model as a father and as a husband, inspiring both his family and friends to be the best versions of themselves,” she said. Awwww.

A FLAG ON THE PLAY? LOCAL COMPANY PROTESTS HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM CONTRACT

A

local construction company is asking how the school district can award seven consecutive construction contracts to the same company when a state law requires them to spread those contracts equitably among qualified firms. And did district officials consider that law, or the six prior contracts they had awarded to Ajax Building Co. last week, when they again chose Ajax to build Key West High School’s new $15 million stadium over a local company? These are the questions that Gulf-Keystar, the other qualified firm that did not get the stadium contract, wants the school district to answer. Its attorneys on Friday sent the school district a “notice of intent to protest” the awarding of the stadium bid to Ajax. “I’m hopeful that we’ll now get the answer to the question we’ve been asking all along: Where was the equitable distribution of work accounted for and considered by the school district?” Keystar co-president Robert Spottswood, Jr. told the Keys Weekly on June 12. “We were asked by the school board and its counsel to file this protest when we wanted to ask questions about it at the June 8 board meeting.” The school district this spring issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from companies interested in building the new KWHS stadium. Five companies responded and two — Ajax and GulfKeystar — were shortlisted by a school district selection committee that interviewed both companies. Out of a possible 400 points, the committee awarded Ajax 17 more points than Gulf-Keystar. Ajax is located in north Florida and New York. Gulf-Keystar is a joint venture between Gulf Building in Fort Lauderdale and the Key West-based Keystar, which is owned by the local Spottswood family. The selection committee recommended that the school board award the stadium bid to Ajax, despite acknowledging in its own RFQ the state law requiring equitable distribution of work among qualified firms. That law is known as Florida’s Consultants’ Competitive Negotiation Act (CCNA), which was “designed to prevent the inequitable distribution of competitive state and local government contracts among qualified contractors.” In its notice of intent to protest, Gulf-Keystar’s attorneys, the law firm of Baker-Hostetler, wrote to the school district: “Ajax has been awarded the last six consecutive projects advertised by the school district under the CCNA, dating back to 2015. All told, this totals over $138 million to Ajax during this time period to the exclusion of all other qualified contractors. “When the school board chose to award this (stadium) project to Ajax, this will make seven awards totaling over $150 million to Ajax.

The construction contract for Key West High School’s new football and baseball stadium is under protest. BARRY GAUKEL/Shady Palm Photography

“Section 287.055 of the Florida Statutes requires that the school board consider ‘the volume of work previously awarded to each firm by the agency, with the object of effecting an equitable distribution of contracts among qualified firms.’ “The school board has confirmed that Keystar was a qualified contractor for the project; in fact, Keystar was one of only two firms shortlisted for interviews and was the second highest scored contractor for the project. “The award of this project violates the CCNA as it consolidates too many awards under such a short time period in Ajax’s hands. Thus ... Keystar intends to protest the award of this project to Ajax under the CCNA.” Keystar’s attorneys further point out in their notice that the school district’s own RFQ contains even stronger language about the equitable distribution of contracts. The stadium RFQ states, “An RFQ is awarded to a short list of responsive and responsible contractors. … Project work is rotated through the short list as it is identified. Every effort is made to equitably distribute the workload amongst all contractors.” Keystar attorneys wrote in their notice of intent to protest, “Only two contractors were shortlisted for the project — Ajax and Keystar. Thus, the school board should have made ‘every effort’ to select Keystar over Ajax, taking into consideration the near identical scoring of the two firms and the fact that the past $138 million worth of contracts went to Ajax and not Keystar. The school board failed to do so. Thus... Keystar intends to protest the award of this Project to Ajax under the plain language of the RFQ.” School board members declined to comment on pending legal matters. Keys Weekly contacted Ajax Building through its website’s media inquiry contact page and asked if someone in the organization wanted to comment on the situation, but received no response. Stay tuned to keysweekly.com for updates to this story.

IRRESISTIBLE, ADORABLE — AND AVAILABLE SPCA HOSTS KITTEN EXTRAVAGANZA JUNE 21-27

I

t’s kitten season in the Florida Keys, where cats breed like rabbits, especially in the springtime. By early summer, there’s no shortage of tiny faces, wide eyes and huge personalities looking for good homes. In order to find those homes and introduce some of the tiny furballs to the community, the Florida Keys SPCA will hold its first-ever Kitten Extravaganza June 21-27. The week will include a series of fundraising events, including three special “meet-and-greet” opportunities, where literal baskets of kittens will be on hand to show off their unquestionable cuteness and find a “furever” home. The events will raise money to help the shelter provide formula, kitten food, medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, toys, blankets and everything else the little guys need. “When a feral cat has kittens that come to us right away, the kittens are easily socialized to be loving, adoptable pets. They won’t be feral just because mom was,” said Tiffany Dunsmore, development director for the Florida Keys SPCA. “At the upcoming Kitten Extravaganza events, the kittens we bring will be available for adoption,” Dunsmore said. “We’ll have adoption questionnaires on hand, and once people fall in love, we’ll take their picture with it and set up a time for them to come to the shelter to meet with an adoption counselor. If the kitten has already been spayed or neutered, they can go home with them. Otherwise, the family can foster the kitten at their house and then bring it back in to be spayed or neutered.” “We’re so excited to launch our first Kitten Extravaganza, which is really our first true fundraiser event since COVD canceled everything,” she said. “This community is always so supportive of our efforts and these animals, and we can’t wait to find homes for the 80 to 100 kittens in our Key West and Marathon shelters. I don’t think people realize just how many kittens come through here this time of year.”

KITTEN EXTRAVAGANZA SCHEDULE Mitten Crush Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. on June 21 at Virgilio’s, 524 Duval St. Sip martinis and meet some kitties. Taco Cat Tuesday, 3 to 6 p.m. at Mellow Ventures,1605 N. Roosevelt Blvd. Ten percent of all taco sales all day will be donated to the Florida Keys SPCA. Meowy Happy Hour Wednesday, 3 to 5 p.m. at SideBar, 504 Angela St. Cuddle with kittens over cocktails. Enjoy halfprice beer, wine, wells and select call drinks during this adorable happy hour. Charity Vibrator Races Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mary Ellen’s, 420 Appelrouth Lane, benefit the SPCA’s Kitten Extravaganza. But this event is no place for the little ones, so no kittens will be present. Whiskey for Whiskers Friday, 6 to 9 p.m. at General Horseplay, 423 Caroline St. Drink specials all night will benefit the SPCA. Kitten Yoga Saturday, 10 to 11 a.m. at FYT, 5450 MacDonald Ave., Stock Island. Work on your downward dog or cat stretches while kittens run around the room, or snuggle in your lap. Reservations are required. Call 305-453-6176 to reserve a space. Trivia for Tails Sunday, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Retro Room, 126 Simonton St. While trivia is always free, the extra buy-ins will be donated directly to the animals.

Kittens galore! The Florida Keys SPCA has more than 100 kittens that need homes and is hosting a Kitten Extravaganza June 21-27, with various events featuring some of the little ones available for adoption. More information is at fkspca.org. CONTRIBUTED

MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 17, 2021

SAYING ‘I DO’ TO A GREAT SUMMER READ Whether you are the blushing bride, reluctant maid of honor or fake date he met in the elevator, there is no doubt weddings are back in full swing. Pick from this bouquet of bestsellers to enjoy the spirit of the season.

KAREN NEWFIELD First and foremost a reader, she has reviewed hundreds of books on her blog www. readingandeating. com. And, more recently, this new Keys resident has also begun writing.

The Grace Kelly Dress By Brenda Janowitz In 1958 Rose is working at Madame’s atelier. Only the most prestigious and wealthy customers can afford to have their wedding dresses designed at this historical establishment. Rose is completing the most important gown they have ever created but can no longer hide that she is head over heels with the bride’s unavailable brother. Sixty years later, Rocky, a twenty-something tech guru, is having her mother’s dress altered for her own wedding. As Rocky’s mother Joan lovingly arranges every detail of the event, she is reminded of her own emotional past. Rocky cannot bear to tell her mother she dreams of a different wedding and another dress. Alternating between the past and present, Joan and Rocky find that what they have in common is more precious than what makes them different. A love story of weddings and truth. I Take You By Eliza Kennedy Lily Wilder is a gorgeous badass lawyer at a top firm in NYC. She is an impulsive flirt and unconventional opponent. Women point fingers, men like to put her in her place. When she meets Will, a handsome, sexy archeologist who works in the museum, it’s lust at first sight. Lily cannot resist when her shy heartthrob pops the question. Off to Key West they fly, Lily’s hometown that she hasn’t visited for 14 years - a mystery that slowly unravels. Lily and Will arrange last minute details with their peculiar wedding planner while her mother, grandmother and two stepmothers beg her to call off this complicated tryst before the truth is revealed. Off the wall humor traipsing through the beaches of Key West with this boozy, scandalous rom-com. It’s time to kick back with a margarita and enjoy this shocking tale. Sex and Vanity By Kevin Kwan Lucie Churchill is a young, beautiful woman when her very good friend invites her to the wedding of the year on the island of Capri. Lucie is swept away with the charm and romance of this magical setting. Her “half-Asian” beauty attracts quite a bit of attention, especially from an extremely wealthy and handsome guest named George. As their moment in the sun quickly fades, the story flashes forward five years to find Lucie engaged to the absolute bachelor of the year. As the couple and their wealthy friends gallivant down Fifth Avenue and through East Hampton, Lucie bumps into George and cannot deny the intense connection she still feels. Crazy Rich Asians in Capri and New York, with a diversity twist and plenty of glitz.

The Wedding Date By Jasmine Guillory As Alexa Monroe makes her way to her sister’s hotel room, the elevator comes to a jolting halt. This is how she meets Dr. Drew Nichols, sexy pediatric surgeon. They pass the hours sharing snacks and life stories. When the elevator begins to climb again, so does Alexa’s heart rate. Drew invites her to be his plus-one at his ex-girlfriend’s wedding the next evening and, much to Alexa’s surprise, she accepts. This incredible fake date weekend is the beginning of a steamy long-distance love affair. He lives in Los Angeles, she lives in San Francisco. With two demanding jobs to juggle, Alexa is terrified that Drew will break her heart. Filled with humor and oodles of romance, this playful, delicious rom-com is the perfect taste of summer.

NEW NOOKS FOR BOOKS SARA MATTHIS

T

he amount of high-tech, thoughtful detail in the new Marathon branch of Monroe County Public Libraries is stunning. The $7.5 million facility will open to the public on Saturday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. with a special ribbon cutting. “This library represents 28 years of my experience with libraries,” said Kimberly Matthews, senior director of strategic planning and libraries for Monroe County. “That’s why I love it so much.” Marathon librarian Lorenia Diaz is reluctant to name just one feature that she loves the best. She settles on a three-dimensional sculpture in the ceiling of the children’s room that depicts an ocean scene. “The oculus. The oculus is my favorite,” Diaz said.

New facility features so many high-tech, wonderful details

The county’s hope is that the library will become the “community’s living room,” said Matthews. To that end, there are multiple meeting spaces — four small, private conference rooms; a ground floor meeting space that can be sectioned off from the larger space for presentations; an activities center up stairs for yoga or science lab or Dungeon and Dragons games; and a teen center equipped with video games. At the same time, the library offers plenty of nooks and crannies where patrons can be “alone, together” whether that’s seated on the couch with USB ports, or in a futuristic desk/chair. “It’s the same concept as Starbucks. People don’t want to be isolated from one another, but they still want privacy to work or relax,” said Matthews. The crew of 9 library staff is working hard leading up to the grand opening — shelving books and planning programming. The Marathon library will have extended evening hours, in anticipation of the community’s embrace.

Futuristic desk chairs occupy the library’s first floor. SARA MATTHIS/Keys Weekly

The raised floor and movable electric plugs mean the library layout can be easily and endlessly reconfigured.

The main entrance features a two-story lobby complete with a suspended sculpture that plays into the coastal color scheme.

The bathroom sink faucet — shaped like a handlebar — features automated soap dispenser, water and drying features.

The $7.5 M facility will open to the public on Saturday, June 26 The library desks are fitted with built-in chargers for phones and other devices.

The ‘egg’ chairs in the kids’ room are snug and comfortable.

Library patrons can choose a movie from the mediabox around the corner, filled with 1,500 movies and video games.

These four private spaces for meeting, two of which are equipped with high-tech audiovisual capabilities, can be reserved.

The children’s reading area features an ocean-themed oculus in the ceiling.

These shelf/table contraptions are roving charger stations, too.

Check out a tablet by scanning a library card and carry it to any corner of the library.

The adult books will be grouped by subject — cooking, sci-fi, etc. — for easy browsing. Don’t panic; no one is doing away with the Dewey Decimal system.

The library is among the first in Monroe County to feature fountains where patrons can also fill up water bottles.

The teen room, walled off with glass, will be a place where kids can play video games or just hang out and chat.

Can’t make it to the library during regular hours? Staff will put your selections (books or movies) in the hold box outside.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK

You may have seen the recent revelations about the relatively low — even non-existent — rate of income tax paid by the ultra-rich, and wondered why. We’re here to help.

WATCH | WAYNE If you’re a fan of “Deadpool,” you’re a fan of “Wayne,” a one-season TV show featuring a teenage vigilante on the run with his girlfriend (?) — it’s violent and funny. The pair are on a pilgrimage from Massachucetts to Ocala, Florida to recover Wayne’s late father’s Trans-Am. Every character — from the girlfriend’s dad (Dean Winters) to the police chief (Stephen Kearin) — are well drawn and original. The show’s creator is an unknown, Shawn Simmons, who teamed up with “Deadpool” producer Paul Wernick. Watch on Amazon.

REASONS BEZOS AND GATES DON’T PAY TAXES 10. They need the extra funds for rocket fuel and trips to the moon. 9. Blame it on the intern at Turbo Tax.

BUY | FACE MASK Everytime we see a swimmer pop out of the ocean wearing one of these, we’re tempted to scream like we’re being swarmed by aliens. After catching our breath, the ingeniousness of this device is clear: the one-piece full face snorkel mask has lots of advantages, especially for beginning snorkelers. Available online.

8. Because divorces suck — even when you are richer than God. 7. Because someone has to be the asshole. 6. Because “trickle down” works … said no one at an Amazon plant. 5. Saving for inflation. 4. Because with great power comes great responsibility. And hookers. And blow. And jets. And cars. And houses. And trips. And …

LISTEN | ATOMIC HABITS Author James Clear writes about habits — how to master good habits and abandon old. His book details systems for change, drawing ideas from biology, psychology and neuroscience for an easy-tounderstand guide for the layman. Bonus: there’s a section devoted to how to overcome a lack of motivation and willpower. Listen on Audible.

3. They also don’t pay barbers. So at least there’s that. 2. The extra money is being used to fix the automatic formatting program in Microsoft Office. 1. Because “Sir Richard did it first.”

THE WILLIAM ENGLISH STORY: WRECKING, INDIAN KEY, AND LOCAL POLITICS Keeping up with family traditions

Dade County politics. Like his uncle, William Fitzpatrick English was the son of wealthy South Carolina plantation owners. English would join the elder Fitzpatrick in Key West and, for a time, worked in his uncle’s salt ponds. At some point, English would become the master of the schooner Brilliant and enter the wrecking industry. By 1837, English had moved to Indian Key, where he lived in the shadow of the island’s largest structures, two three-story warehouses. At least four buildings were likely associated with the English property: the main house, kitchen, and slave quarters. The kitchen was a free-standing building for good reasons. Among them was the fact that the fire used for cooking produced tremendous heat. Second, it was important to keep the kitchen building separate from the primary home in case of the accidental spread of fire. The kitchen was built atop a cistern, a valuable resource as there was no other source of fresh water on the island. The cistern would collect rainwater through gutter systems leading from the roof. Multiple slave quarters would have stood behind the main house for his slaves: Binah English, Lucy English, Chasy English, Mary English, Ellen English and Alexander English. English was not the island’s only slave

owner. Before the Civil War, slave ownership was common. Ten of the country’s first 12 presidents were slave owners, including the fifth president of the United States and Monroe County namesake, James Monroe. The two presidents who were not slave owners were John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams. On Indian Key, among the island’s other slave owners were Charles Howe, postmaster; S.A. Spencer, proprietor of the Tropical Hotel (the first hotel established in the Florida Keys outside of Key West); and Jacob Housman. It was July 25, 1837, when Indians attacked Captain John Whalton of the lightship Florida and his crew on Key Largo. Whalton and one crew member were killed. Reports indicate that two wreckers, one being William English from the ship Brilliant, approached the Key Largo site, came ashore and retrieved the bodies. They were taken to Indian Key, where Whalton, according to some sources, was buried. English followed in his uncle’s footsteps in other ways, too. After Fitzpatrick’s properties along both the Miami and New rivers were abandoned during the second escalation of the Seminole War, English bought them in hopes of reviving the plantations. English moved to the Miami River plantation, where his slaves built two natural stone structures. One of these was a twostory home with three-foot thick walls, built as a home for English. The other was built to house his slaves, many of whom worked in his plantation fields. English, too, entered the political game. In 1840, English was elected to represent Dade County at the Florida Territorial Congress. He would serve from 1840 to 1844.

At the March 1844 meeting of the Territorial Congress, English lobbied to have the county seat moved from Indian Key and relocated to what had initially been called Fort Dallas and later renamed Miami. As Indian Key had been all but abandoned by 1844, the bill passed into law on March 9. When Indian hostilities reignited with the third escalation of the Seminole War, English, like his uncle before him, abandoned his plantation and returned to the safer confines of Key West. Subsequently, the U.S. Army would take over English’s property, use his stone structures, and reestablish Fort Dallas. At Key West, English and Uncle Richard bought the schooner Commodore Stockton and decided to sail off on a golden adventure. They sailed south, navigating Cape Horn, Chile, at the last tip of South America, before turning northwest and setting a course for California. Not interested in the beaches, they headed to the northern part of the state, possibly docking at San Francisco before heading inland to the Sacramento area. The hope was to become a part of California’s gold rush, make a fortunate claim and come out of the whole ordeal rich. As is so often the case, the reality was unable to live up to the dream that had spurred their adventure. While in Grass Valley, California, in 1855, English was riding on a horse. When he went to dismount, his rifle accidentally discharged and the bullet struck him in the side. William English would succumb to the wound and bring an end to his story.

Y

ou could hear the Pan Am reunion party on June 9 at Tavernier’s Atlantic Bay Resort before seeing it: the thrum of a disco beat and the loud cocktail conversation. A party was in full steam, with glasses clicking and hoots of laughter, and a backdrop of the sea and palm trees. This group of friends looked ecstatic to be together. Since 2013, Tavernier resident Hedy Menendez has been organizing a semi-annual National/Pan Am reunion in the Florida Keys for about 40 to 90 friends. “It’s my great joy being able to bring everyone together,” she told Keys Weekly. The location is fitting, since the birthplace of Pan Am was in the Keys — Key West, to be exact. In 1927, Pan American World Airways started offering flights from Key West to Cuba at 301 Whitehead St. From that time until it folded in 1991, Pan Am was the largest international air carrier in the United States. Menendez’s friends were eager to talk to Keys Weekly and share what working at Pan Am was really like. Most of the attendees were Pan Am employees of many decades, starting in the 1970s.

6

FLIGHT ATTENDANTS SHARE INSIDE SCOOP OF LIFE AT PAN AM DURING KEYS REUNION Over the years, the image of Pan Am flight attendants has acquired a glamorous luster. And yes, back in the day, they were called “stewards” and “stewardesses.” The 1950s through 1980s is generally considered the “golden age of traveling,” the era before 9/11, exploding shoes, 3-ounce liquid container limits, cranky TSA lines and ever-diminishing seat sizes and food options. A short-lived TV show on ABC in 2011-12 called “Pan Am” focused on the elegance of air travel in the early 1960s. The stewardesses had similar youthful ages, heights, figures, hair, makeup and uniforms with precisely the same hats, white gloves, panty hose and shellacked hair. In the first episode of “Pan Am,” a character was suspended for — horrors — not wearing a girdle. “The girdles were from another era,” said a party goer during a group conversation at one of the reunion’s tables. The former employees said the rumors of strict uniform and physical standards were mostly true, though by the 1970s, standards had relaxed a little. “But we needed back-up panty hose, in case one pair got a hole in it,” said another attendee, who pointed out that supervisors checked what they packed. And every day during a mandatory eightweek job training, which was intense with lessons about how to evacuate a plane, they had weigh-ins. The employees called these “fat checks.”

Billy Rosenbalm, who flew for Pan Am from 1977 to 1991, said his appointed maximum weight was 155 pounds. “And I was always 165,” he said, laughing. “They told me to jog around before I weighed myself.” But despite the obsessive focus on appearance, these stewards and stewardesses loved their jobs. Party guest Sally Morris, who flew Pan Am from 1978 to 1991, remembers having a layover in St. Thomas and thinking, “I’m getting paid for this.” A table full of former Pan Am employees ticked through a list of all the celebs they served on flights, which is perhaps a phenomenon that doesn’t happen on commercial flights anymore due to the prevalence of private flying. But the list is a who’s who of the biggest stars of the 1970s and 1980s: Jimmy Buffett, Michael Jackson, Goldie Hawn, the whole cast of “Dynasty,” Don Johnson … and yes, there was partying. One former flight attendant said a famous 1970s rock star sneaked in certain substances to make his all-night flight a little more fun. And another employee said they had a female passenger do some “streaking,” the 1970s fad of running naked in a public place. The streaker was climbing over passengers in the middle seats, and the captain had to be summoned from the cockpit. He ran back with a blanket to cover her. The story made news headlines.

11 And another ex-Pan Am employee said that on layovers in Rome, the staff would clean the bar cart of the booze, take it back to their hotel rooms, strip the beds of sheets, then wear them like togas ... because they were in Rome. Longtime Pan Am employee Debbie Shannon said, “We traveled the world together, experienced moments of pure terror, and we bonded so closely.” Speaking of terror, reunion guest Kathi Rutter said, “We blew an engine going out of New York, and James Coburn was in first class, as white as a sheet.” Rutter said the flight ended up okay. Shannon pointed out, “Safety was our number one job — we weren’t just a waitress in the skies.” At different times during the party, the longtime friends spontaneously kicked off their flip-flops to dance, sang “Barbara Ann” en masse while gathering for a group photo and often threw their heads back in laughter.

12 Orli Stryren is still flying after 42 years. She started with Pan Am in the 1970s and has worked for American Airlines for 30 years. “I meet other flight attendants from other airlines, and they can’t believe we have these reunions. We were all in our 20s and grew up together in a foreign country. All we had was each other. I love these people. The memories are precious.” Former Pan Am stewardess Joey Miller has one memory in particular that she’ll never forget. “The flight was from LA to JFK and it was Christmas, and not many people were on the flight. So we moved them all into first class. Then we lit candles and sang Christmas carols,” she said, smiling, looking into the distance and swaying, as if moved by the memory.

MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 17, 2021 A least tern on a dock piling in the Lower Keys. MARK HEDDEN/Keys Weekly

A ROOF AND SOME SHADE — IT’S THE LEAST WE CAN DO FOR LEAST TERNS

MARK HEDDEN ... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

L

east terns never seem substantial enough to exist in the real world. The rational part of my brain knows they’re made of flesh and blood and feathers like all birds, but the evidenceresistant part of my brain is still convinced they are made out of styrofoam, or a more magical, less environmentally damaging version of it. There is just such a lightness to them. It’s the way they fly — each wingbeat pulling them higher than you think it should. When they feed, they fall from 20 or 30 feet up and hit the water in a controlled crash, but hardly break the surface. They almost always rise back up with some small, shiny fish in their bill. You see other plunge-diving birds in these parts — sandwich terns, roseate terns, osprey — all of which seem the embodiments of grace and precision, until you compare them to least terns. Then they are suddenly the uninvited oafs doing unwanted cannonballs at a pool party. Terns are the classier cousins of gulls, sleeker and faster, with wings that tend to be pointed and tails that tend to be forked. They don’t dumpster-dive or steal French fries from unsuspecting seaside diners the way gulls do. They keep it clean. Most tern species live near the water and survive almost exclusively on fish. There are 47 species of terns in the world, and the least terns are, in fact, the least of them, at least in terms of physical stature. They’re the smallest and the lightest. Nine inches from tip of the bill to the tip of the tail with a 20-inch wingspan, they weigh in at 1.75 ounces, which is nine tenths the weight of a tennis ball. With other small birds – say, warblers, tanagers or sandpipers – you tend to go Stuart Little when you watch them and mentally scale the world down, especially when you watch them through binoculars. A birdbath becomes a swimming pool, a banyan tree a mega mansion. That doesn’t happen with least terns. They always seem like tiny sprites in an outsized landscape, either totally at rest, or hyperkinetically zipping through the air. If you live in the Keys you’ve seen least terns, even if you don’t know it. You have definitely heard them. Throughout most of their eons-long history, least terns nested on beaches, digging out shallow divots or scrapes in which to lay their eggs. Their chicks are precocial, meaning they can walk as soon as they hatch, and the tiny brown powder puffs with legs tend to cluster in whatever shade they can find. Like small drifts of dirty snow, they mostly stay invisible to predators. Like so many Florida bird species, least tern populations were first decimated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the plume hunters, who gunned them down to sell their feathers to

the hat-making trade (though you have to wonder how many least tern feathers would survive a shotgun blast). As their populations slowly began to recover, Florida coastal areas began to get developed, and functional beach habitat began to disappear. To adapt to their habitat loss, they began nesting on gravel rooftops – the kind you find in large shopping centers or on government buildings. About a third of the North American least tern population — about 7,000 pairs — breeds in Florida. An estimated 55% of those now nest on rooftops. In Key West they’re on top of the Winn Dixie, the K-Mart, both Publixes, the Professional Building on 12th Street, the federal courthouse on Simonton Street, and a number of Navy properties. Stop in any of those parking lots — or the parking lot of pretty much any large grocery store in the Keys — between April and August and one will most likely fly over before you’ve managed to lock your car door. Just listen for the raspy/tinny ta-KEE ta-KEE ta-KEE call and look for the undersized, fluttering white streak. While it’s great to see such a deft adaptation to the modern landscape, it’s probably not a long-term solution, as gravel roofs are becoming outmoded in contemporary building practices, and they will slowly begin to disappear. When you hear of situations like the one at the Futura Yacht Club in Tavernier a few months ago, where a contractor gathered up an entire colony’s worth of chicks, put them in a box, and took them to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, things can get a little depressing. After resistance from the president of the homeowners association, the birds were eventually returned to the roof, but it took so long it is unlikely any of them survived. Because Florida’s wildlife protection laws are so toothless, as restitution, Futura Yacht Club was forced to give a whopping $1,000 donation to Audubon Florida, which Audubon Florida refused to accept, calling it “blood money.” Basically, anyone who wants to wipe out an entire colony of birds can consider it the cost of doing business and do it on the cheap. (You can find more information about this incident at markhedden.com/notes.) In a heartening contrast to the Tavernier incident, in recent weeks a group of least terns decided to nest on the ground in the corner of the lot of the Police Athletic League building that is being renovated at Truman Waterfront Park. That area has now been temporarily fenced off so the least terns can raise their chicks in peace. Apparently they’ve even brought some PVC pipes in, so the terns can have a little shade.

MARATHON WEEKLY / JUNE 17, 2021

THE 21st CENTURY MUSICIAN

The new music business still sucks…

I

t seems hard to believe, especially for me, that I’ve been performing music professionally for roughly 40 years (some more rough than others). My aspiring amateur JOHN status dates back BARTUS even a few more is a City Council years. Aside from member and a qualifying me as former Mayor of a geezer, having the City of Maraplayed music since thon. John is also a musician who the 1970s means performs around I’ve seen some town at various major changes in establishments. the business, from the lower rungs on the ladder where I reside, all the way to the top, or what’s left of it. When I started out, this rock music thing was still quite a youngster. Rock-and-roll is officially just six years older than I am, and I can still vividly remember the sounds of the 1960s that came through my little Sony transistor radio. The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, the Stones, and the Doors — much to my parents’ chagrin — were the soundtrack of the life of an overprotected young boy who wanted to go surfing and skateboarding like the older kids were doing in Cocoa Beach in the mid- to late 1960s. As the ’60s turned into the ’70s, we left Florida for South Carolina, and the music started to change. The radio stations in upstate South Carolina weren’t playing the stuff I really wanted to hear (like Dylan or Pink Floyd), but dadgum, there shore was a lotta Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band. Yee haw. While I have a deeper appreciation for their music today, I just wasn’t into the redneck rock thing. As I picked up the guitar for the first time, I gravitated toward the singer-songwriter element that was taking off in a big way: James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, and all the Dylan I didn’t already know. I bought Joni Mitchell albums but I could never get the hang of her guitar style (it wasn’t until much later that I found out she had different tunings for practically every song she wrote). Getting my first electric guitar turned me on to the world of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, and (later) Mark Knopfler. I loved the Fender Stratocaster, but all I could afford was a second-hand Fender Mustang (a way cool pre-CBS 1965 Fender Mustang that I sadly had to sell many years ago). Plugged into a couple of pedals

and an inexpensive amp, I learned my blues scales and started playing bad lead. (I got better.) I spend all this time in the Wayback Machine to illustrate how different it is to be a musician today. Back then, aspiring musicians practiced until they got good enough to play and sing in front of other people, maybe found some other musicians to play with, started getting some gigs, then started working steadily, building a following, and (perhaps, with a lot of luck) getting the attention of someone at a record label or management firm. (Yeah, I’ve got a couple of “almosts” in my closet.) It’s much harder today. First of all, aspiring musicians have to decide if they want to learn an instrument and actual music or just be an American Idol star. Then, once they consider themselves good enough, they have to look good, which is often more important than actual musical talent. Then, they have to try and find gigs. Let’s not forget putting together some sort of recording rig (or finding a producer — gasp!) and putting out a CD/album/ collection of downloads and streams. Then there’s the endless promotional stuff — website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube videos, mass emails to a (hopefully) growing list of fans, and contacting as many people as possible who might be able to help. Although it’s much harder, the tools for getting one’s music distributed worldwide are there for anyone to use. Because anyone can get their stuff out there, they do. That makes promotion even more important: how does your music stand out in a sea of other artists? And even though your music may be out there and available, the business still favors the distributors and not the creators. While Apple, Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, and all the rest are making money hand over fist, the artists get chump change. Every time Alexa plays one of my songs on Amazon, I get $0.004. Really. For geezers like myself, however, nothing beats great local venues that still book live music. When I’m not playing, I’ll be updating social media, sending emails, and getting ready for a possibly-soon-to-be-upcoming release party for my new After The Storm CD. I’ll keep you posted. Catch John Wednesdays at Herbie’s, Thursdays at Sparky’s Landing, Friday on Facebook Live, Saturday night at the Key Colony Inn, Sunday brunch at Bongos, and Sunday night at Boondocks. Music wherever you get your streaming or downloads. www.facebook.com/john. bartus
