IT’S OFFICIAL KEY WEST APPOINTS PATTI MCLAUCHLIN AS FIRST FEMALE CITY MANAGER

The word “interim” no longer precedes Patti McLauchlin’s title. It’s just city manager.

McLauchlin’s appointment to the city’s top job received unanimous approval from the city commission on June 15. Officials directed the city attorney to draft an employment contract for a minimum of two years, which is when McLauchlin is scheduled to retire.

“There’s a new level of calm in the city,” Teri Johnston told McLauchlin. “You treat people fairly and equitably. You think before you act and you reach out to the community before you make a decision. We know you’ll lead this community in a moral and equitable way.”

Commissioner Greg Davila told McLauchlin, “I never liked the word ‘interim’ in front of your name.

You are our city manager.”

Commissioners Clayton Lopez, Billy Wardlow, Sam Kaufman and Mary Lou Hoover each echoed their resounding support. Lopez applauded McLauchlin’s commitment to a succession plan that will, ideally, provide the city with her replacement when she retires.

McLauchlin sincerely thanked each commissioner and the mayor for the opportunity and their confidence in her. She also thanked her sister, Charla, son Frank and her two grandsons for their support.

“I’m committed to this community, my community,” she said. “I’m committed to our employees … and I’m extremely honored to be the first woman city manager of my community.”

The selection committee initially tasked with helping to find a new city manager met Monday, June 14 at City Hall and was prepared to approve a profile describing the ideal city manager candidate.

A consultant was then going to find potential candidates and start an interview process.

“Then there was a request from the committee about whether I would consider doing the job for another two years, and I said I would,” McLauchlin told the Keys Weekly Monday evening after the committee met.

McLauchlin has worked for the city for 40 years and was assistant city manager under Greg Veliz, who resigned in April. McLauchlin was then appointed interim city manager while the commission embarked on a national search for Veliz’s replacement. The search is over.

In other news, McLauchlin told the commissioners that the RFP (Request for Proposals) for the Duval Street revitalization project should be “on the streets” by the next commission meeting and awaiting responses. The city ended its contract with the first company it selected, KCI Technologies, when several of its key personnel left the company.

Also, the discussion and decision about changes to the city’s garbage collection contract with Waste Management was postponed until July 20. Waste Management wants to increase some of its prices for garbage and recycling collection. Its current seven-year contract ends on Dec. 31, but includes two four-year renewal options. The city’s utilities director, John Paul Castro, has said he cannot recommend approval of the increase before the contract expires, as it has already been negotiated.

A FLAG ON THE PLAY? LOCAL COMPANY PROTESTS HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM CONTRACT

A

local construction company is asking how the school district can award seven consecutive construction contracts to the same company when a state law requires them to spread those contracts equitably among qualified firms.

And did district officials consider that law, or the six prior contracts they had awarded to Ajax Building Co. last week, when they again chose Ajax to build Key West High School’s new $15 million stadium over a local company?

These are the questions that Gulf-Keystar, the other qualified firm that did not get the stadium contract, wants the school district to answer. Its attorneys on Friday sent the school district a “notice of intent to protest” the awarding of the stadium bid to Ajax.

“I’m hopeful that we’ll now get the answer to the question we’ve been asking all along: Where was the equitable distribution of work accounted for and considered by the school district?” Keystar co-president Robert Spottswood, Jr. told the Keys Weekly on June 12.

“We were asked by the school board and its counsel to file this protest when we wanted to ask questions about it at the June 8 board meeting.”

The school district this spring issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) from companies interested in building the new KWHS stadium. Five companies responded and two — Ajax and GulfKeystar — were shortlisted by a school district selection committee that interviewed both companies.

Out of a possible 400 points, the committee awarded Ajax 17 more points than Gulf-Keystar.

Ajax is located in north Florida and New York. Gulf-Keystar is a joint venture between Gulf Building in Fort Lauderdale and the Key West-based Keystar, which is owned by the local Spottswood family.

The selection committee recommended that the school board award the stadium bid to Ajax, despite acknowledging in its own RFQ the state law requiring equitable distribution of work among qualified firms.

That law is known as Florida’s Consultants’ Competitive Negotiation Act (CCNA), which was “designed to prevent the inequitable distribution of competitive state and local government contracts among qualified contractors.”

In its notice of intent to protest, Gulf-Keystar’s attorneys, the law firm of Baker-Hostetler, wrote to the school district: “Ajax has been awarded the last six consecutive projects advertised by the school district under the CCNA, dating back to 2015. All told, this totals over $138 million to Ajax during this time period to the exclusion of all other qualified contractors.

“When the school board chose to award this (stadium) project to Ajax, this will make seven awards totaling over $150 million to Ajax.

“Section 287.055 of the Florida Statutes requires that the school board consider ‘the volume of work previously awarded to each firm by the agency, with the object of effecting an equitable distribution of contracts among qualified firms.’

“The school board has confirmed that Keystar was a qualified contractor for the project; in fact, Keystar was one of only two firms shortlisted for interviews and was the second highest scored contractor for the project.

“The award of this project violates the CCNA as it consolidates too many awards under such a short time period in Ajax’s hands. Thus ... Keystar intends to protest the award of this project to Ajax under the CCNA.” Keystar’s attorneys further point out in their notice that the school district’s own RFQ contains even stronger language about the equitable distribution of contracts.

The stadium RFQ states, “An RFQ is awarded to a short list of responsive and responsible contractors. … Project work is rotated through the short list as it is identified. Every effort is made to equitably distribute the workload amongst all contractors.”

Keystar attorneys wrote in their notice of intent to protest, “Only two contractors were shortlisted for the project — Ajax and Keystar. Thus, the school board should have made ‘every effort’ to select Keystar over Ajax, taking into consideration the near identical scoring of the two firms and the fact that the past $138 million worth of contracts went to Ajax and not Keystar.

The school board failed to do so. Thus... Keystar intends to protest the award of this Project to Ajax under the plain language of the RFQ.” School board members declined to comment on pending legal matters. Keys Weekly contacted Ajax Building through its website’s media inquiry contact page and asked if someone in the organization wanted to comment on the situation, but received no response.

BECOMING LAW GOVERNOR SIGNS FLURRY OF BILLS IN RECENT WEEKS

A

flurry of bills passing through the Florida legislative chambers this session were signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in recent weeks.

Some address insurance reform in the state, while others assist servicemembers in workforce training and ongoing issues at Key Biscayne.

Earlier this month, DeSantis took pen to paper on the state’s budget for fiscal year 2022, which starts July 1. In the budget, $20 million was secured for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act and $5 million for land acquisition in record funding in the program’s five-year existence.

A transportation bill passing the House and Senate does everything from allowing governing bodies to abandon certain roads and rights-of-way to community development districts to vehicles and equipment displaying flashing lights. It also seeks to overturn Key West’s vote to limit the size of cruise ships entering the port. Senate Bill 1194 awaits action from DeSantis, and the Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships is watching closely.

“The governor wants cruise ships sailing on Florida’s beautiful waters again and so do we,” said Arlo Haskell, treasurer for Safer, Cleaners Ships. “All we are saying is send us your smaller ships so we can hold on to the dramatic water quality improvements we’ve seen over the past 15 months.”

On June 11, DeSantis signed Senate Bill 76, which includes provisions protecting consumers from unlicensed adjusting and contracting and solicitation fraud. According to FIRM, these provisions will be a deterrent to out-of-state contractors looking to cash in after a storm.

Legislation also expressly disallows contractors, public adjusters, and companies from using prohibited advertisements that encourage Floridians to make an insurance claim for roof damage. Those violating the law face up to a $10,000 fine.

“Since my first days in office, I have been committed to doing whatever it takes to reduce the burden of property insurance on Florida families,” DeSantis said. “That includes signing into law historic reforms to the assignment of benefits process and appointing principled justices to our state courts.”

A proposal within the bill to create a roof reimbursement schedule didn’t make the final bill. As a result, homeowners will receive full reimbursement they’re entitled to receive. Legislation originally had a schedule of depreciation for roofs older than 10 years: 70% replacement value for a metal roof type; 40% replacement value for a concrete tile and clay tile roof type; 40% replacement value for a wood shake and wood shingle roof type; and 25% replacement value for all other roof types.

On the environmental front, DeSantis signed House Bill 1177 to address ongoing issues at Biscayne Bay — a vital resource to the economy and ecology of southeast Florida. Specifically, the bill creates a commission that will look to bring stakeholders, from the federal level to local government, together to bolster efforts to protect the bay. Legislation accompanies $20 million in the budget for the bay facing major pollution problems.

“The bay contains the largest passenger port in the world, is an international sailing destination, and plays a critical role in the health of Florida’s coral reef,” said Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez. “The bay and reef annually provide well over $20 billion in shoreline protection, fisheries habitat, and recreational opportunities.”

DeSantis also recently signed three military- and veteran-related bills into law to establish a “Purple Star Campus Program.”

Bills are geared to help servicemembers gain workforce training and enhance veterans’ preference in hiring. The program designates a military liaison to directly support families; updates the school website with resources for military students and families and offers a student-led transition program to help military students acclimate into a school, among other supportive measures.

Senate Bill 922 gives state and political subdivisions the ability to waive certain postsecondary educational requirements for employment for eligible servicemembers and veterans. It also enhances point preferences given to veterans and their family members when a numerically based selection process is used for hiring.

A Senate bill related to the emergency preparedness and response fund was vetoed on June 8. In a memo, DeSantis said he recommended creation of the fund with the intention of obtaining funding of $1 billion from the coronavirus state and local fiscal recovery fund. DeSantis said federal rules won’t allow use of funds for the preparedness fund, which led to the veto.

A ROOF AND SOME SHADE — IT’S THE LEAST WE CAN DO FOR LEAST TERNS

L

east terns never seem substantial enough to exist in the real world. The rational part of my brain knows they’re made of flesh and blood and feathers like all birds, but the evidenceresistant part of my brain is still convinced they are made out of styrofoam, or a more magical, less environmentally damaging version of it. There is just such a lightness to them.

It’s the way they fly — each wingbeat pulling them higher than you think it should. When they feed, they fall from 20 or 30 feet up and hit the water in a controlled crash, but hardly break the surface. They almost always rise back up with some small, shiny fish in their bill.

You see other plunge-diving birds in these parts — sandwich terns, roseate terns, osprey — all of which seem the embodiments of grace and precision, until you compare them to least terns. Then they are suddenly the uninvited oafs doing unwanted cannonballs at a pool party.

Terns are the classier cousins of gulls, sleeker and faster, with wings that tend to be pointed and tails that tend to be forked.

They don’t dumpster-dive or steal French fries from unsuspecting seaside diners the way gulls do. They keep it clean. Most tern species live near the water and survive almost exclusively on fish.

There are 47 species of terns in the world, and the least terns are, in fact, the least of them, at least in terms of physical stature.

They’re the smallest and the lightest. Nine inches from tip of the bill to the tip of the tail with a 20-inch wingspan, they weigh in at 1.75 ounces, which is nine tenths the weight of a tennis ball.

With other small birds – say, warblers, tanagers or sandpipers – you tend to go Stuart Little when you watch them and mentally scale the world down, especially when you watch them through binoculars. A birdbath becomes a swimming pool, a banyan tree a mega mansion.

That doesn’t happen with least terns. They always seem like tiny sprites in an outsized landscape, either totally at rest, or hyperkinetically zipping through the air.

If you live in the Keys you’ve seen least terns, even if you don’t know it. You have definitely heard them.

Throughout most of their eons-long history, least terns nested on beaches, digging out shallow divots or scrapes in which to lay their eggs. Their chicks are precocial, meaning they can walk as soon as they hatch, and the tiny brown powder puffs with legs tend to cluster in whatever shade they can find. Like small drifts of dirty snow, they mostly stay invisible to predators.

Like so many Florida bird species, least tern populations were first decimated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the plume hunters, who gunned them down to sell their feathers to

the hat-making trade (though you have to wonder how many least tern feathers would survive a shotgun blast). As their populations slowly began to recover, Florida coastal areas began to get developed, and functional beach habitat began to disappear.

To adapt to their habitat loss, they began nesting on gravel rooftops – the kind you find in large shopping centers or on government buildings. About a third of the North American least tern population — about 7,000 pairs — breeds in Florida. An estimated 55% of those now nest on rooftops.

In Key West they’re on top of the Winn Dixie, the K-Mart, both Publixes, the Professional Building on 12th Street, the federal courthouse on Simonton Street, and a number of Navy properties. Stop in any of those parking lots — or the parking lot of pretty much any large grocery store in the Keys — between April and August and one will most likely fly over before you’ve managed to lock your car door. Just listen for the raspy/tinny ta-KEE ta-KEE ta-KEE call and look for the undersized, fluttering white streak.

While it’s great to see such a deft adaptation to the modern landscape, it’s probably not a long-term solution, as gravel roofs are becoming outmoded in contemporary building practices, and they will slowly begin to disappear.

When you hear of situations like the one at the Futura Yacht Club in Tavernier a few months ago, where a contractor gathered up an entire colony’s worth of chicks, put them in a box, and took them to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, things can get a little depressing. After resistance from the president of the homeowners association, the birds were eventually returned to the roof, but it took so long it is unlikely any of them survived.

Because Florida’s wildlife protection laws are so toothless, as restitution, Futura Yacht Club was forced to give a whopping $1,000 donation to Audubon Florida, which Audubon Florida refused to accept, calling it “blood money.” Basically, anyone who wants to wipe out an entire colony of birds can consider it the cost of doing business and do it on the cheap. In a heartening contrast to the Tavernier incident, in recent weeks a group of least terns decided to nest on the ground in the corner of the lot of the Police Athletic League building that is being renovated at Truman Waterfront Park. That area has now been temporarily fenced off so the least terns can raise their chicks in peace. Apparently they’ve even brought some PVC pipes in, so the terns can have a little shade.

t’s kitten season in the Florida Keys, where cats breed like rabbits, especially in the springtime.

By early summer, there’s no shortage of tiny faces, wide eyes and huge personalities looking for good homes.

In order to find those homes and introduce some of the tiny furballs to the community, the Florida Keys SPCA will hold its first-ever Kitten Extravaganza June 21-27.

The week will include a series of fundraising events, including three special “meet-and-greet” opportunities, where literal baskets of kittens will be on hand to show off their unquestionable cuteness and find a “furever” home. The events will raise money to help the shelter provide formula, kitten food, medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, toys, blankets and everything else the little guys need.

“When a feral cat has kittens that come to us right away, the kittens are easily socialized to be loving, adoptable pets. They won’t be feral just because mom was,” said Tiffany Dunsmore, development director for the Florida Keys SPCA. “At the upcoming Kitten Extravaganza events, the kittens we bring will be available for adoption,” Dunsmore said. “We’ll have adoption questionnaires on hand, and once people fall in love, we’ll take their picture with it and set up a time for them to come to the shelter to meet with an adoption counselor.

If the kitten has already been spayed or neutered, they can go home with them. Otherwise, the family can foster the kitten at their house and then bring it back in to be spayed or neutered.”

“We’re so excited to launch our first Kitten Extravaganza, which is really our first true fundraiser event since COVD canceled everything,” she said.

“This community is always so supportive of our efforts and these animals, and we can’t wait to find homes for the 80 to 100 kittens in our Key West and Marathon shelters. I don’t think people realize just how many kittens come through here this time of year.”

Our new roommate sleeps in a wastepaper basket (after she knocks it over to empty it).

She follows us into the kitchen on every trip, no exceptions.

She follows us to the bathroom, lounging patiently on the magazine shelf and chatting amicably while we shower, or whatever.

She wakes the entire house at 3 a.m., 5 a.m. or whatever ungodly hour she decides is appropriate to wander around and oh-so-gently tap every occupant on the cheek, just to see if we’re really sleeping.

She helps herself to our drinks (water or vodka, she’s not picky), and when she’s not getting the attention she feels she deserves, she starts intentionally knocking shit off the coffee table — just to watch it fall. A fork? Gone. A piece of mail?

Flick. Gone. A computer mouse?

Later, mouse. Stan’s new Costa sunglasses? Not any more.

Gravity is apparently hilarious to a 2-year-old cat.

It’s a good thing she’s super soft and equally hilarious, because the cute little freeloader gets away with almost everything. I do draw the line when she climbs to the topmost shelf and then starts eyeing the curtain rod. That requires some intervention on my part, although I’m often too late.

In honor of the Florida Keys SPCA’s upcoming Kitten Extravaganza, I figured I’d introduce our new cat, Peanut. Stan and I adopted this little softie from the Key West shelter on April 6, and have spent the past nine weeks laughing — mostly. (Our reactions are slightly different around 5 a.m.)

Peanut is only my second cat, having grown up with a jolly mutt of a shelter dog named Sneakers.

(Best. Dog. Ever.) My first cat was the 17-pound Buddy, who showed up on our Key West back porch one day 12 years ago and didn’t leave until he left this world two years ago at a ripe old age. Buddy was a full-grown, street-smart gentleman drops stuff, breaks things and falls down more than any adult should.

She’s married to a saintly — and handy — fisherman, and has been stringing words together in Key West since 1998.

cat when he showed up one night hoping to share the fresh tuna Stan was cleaning out back.

But Buddy was already an adult, chilled out and comfortable. He didn’t want to play at 5 a.m. He’d saunter out of the bedroom around 10 a.m. like a hungover frat boy looking drowsily for some Cap’n Crunch.

Buddy could also be trusted on his own outside. He had his own kitty door from the living room to the front porch and was hugely lowmaintenance.

Peanut? Not so much. She’s too small and inexperienced to venture outside on her own, and she’s NOT a fan of the snazzy blue vest we bought for her outdoor adventures.

She’s apparently convinced the thing is a straitjacket rather than a softly padded harness. She’ll take a few steps, freeze in place and then slump over. But that’s actually an improvement over her first outing, when she looked like one of those fainting goats and simply fell over sideways with her legs out stiff. Fortunately, her curiosity about the outdoors is beginning to surpass her distaste for the harness and she’s moving a bit more smoothly.

Without a doubt, our house is a happier place with the Peanut in it.

AIRPORT MONEY WILL FUND 4 KEYS FIREWORKS DISPLAYS The county commission this week decided to use revenue from the Key West International Airport to sponsor Independence Day celebrations and fireworks displays throughout the Florida Keys.

“Coming out of COVID-19, our local rotaries and chambers had difficulties fundraising for

firework displays, and this is one way for everyone to enjoy Florida Keys displays and celebrate our independence,” County Mayor Michelle Coldiron said.

In Key West, the Rotary Club of Key West will present the annual fireworks show as it has since 1976 from the Edward B. Knight Pier, where White Street meets Atlantic Avenue.

In Big Pine, July 4 festivities will start at 5 p.m. at Big Pine Community Park.

Champagne, beer.

Tiger Bar Exotic Eats and neighboring Champagne Room are a study in both contrast and balance.

“There’s definitely a sort of yin yang between the two places — dark and masculine over there and ultra-feminine over here,” said owner Tricia Coyne, pouring a glass of wine and gesturing to the Champagne Room’s high ceilings, spotless white bar and refreshing aqua-colored trim. “In here, I created a bar that I wanted to hang out in, with a focus on bubbles — by the bottle and glass.”

Next to the sparkling bar, a comfortable lounge area welcomes guests who are free to sit on couches, in a hanging swing or at a high-top table. A progressive happy hour occurs from 3 to 6 p.m., offering $3 glasses at 3 p.m., $4 glasses at 4 p.m. and $5 glasses at 5 p.m.

The Champagne Room, 500 Truman Ave., has hosted bachelorette parties, wedding and baby showers, birthdays and random Tuesday happy hours. “Some of the nursing students from College of the Florida Keys always come in to have a glass of wine and do their homework,” Coyne said.

Charcuterie boards and other small items are available in the bubbly space.

But right next door — with a curtain separating the two experiences — Tiger Bar Exotic Eats offers Asian-inspired small plates created by chef Russ Ferstle, who has worked with Coyne since she opened her first Key West restaurant, Firefly, about eight years ago on Petronia Street.

The juxtaposition of the two aesthetics is akin to reading Hemingway and Jane Austen at the same time.

“Tiger Bar Exotic Eats is a modern, small-plate restaurant inspired by international street food where every guest is treated with the intimacy of a chef’s table dining experience,” says the restaurants’ website, “while the vintage lounge of the Champagne Room next door features a rotating boutique wine list and artisanal hors d’oeuvres.”

The study in contrasts between the new neighboring spaces is intentional — and entirely enjoyable.

Tiger Bar has an almost underground, or beneath-the-surface, atmosphere. Its interior feels as if a 17-century schooner and a hideaway bar in Southeast Asia somehow combined to create the coolest man fort. Ever. There’s something strange or surprising to see in every nook of the place — a schooner’s figurehead, a shrunken head and a life-sized tiger on the front door.

Ferstke also keeps stacks of cookbooks around the restaurant, not as props, but for his own inspiration and reference.

“Russ is one the most research-oriented chefs I know, and it’s amazing to watch him at work,” Coyne said.

The magic happens at an open kitchen in full view of the bar and dining tables. With a full beer and wine selection and an adventurous menu, Coyne and Ferstle provide an exciting experience on every visit.

Ferstle is constantly updating the menu, but on a recent Friday, the offerings included homemade Lumpia, the Filipino egg rolls with ground pork, cabbage and carrots and a spicy, homemade sauce; Korean fried chicken with hot honey or soy garlic sauce, and Asian sticky balls — pork meatballs in a sticky glaze and zucchini noodles.

One of Coyne’s favorites is Ferstle’s “Gunpowder Tofu and beetroot rice — Indian-spiced tofu with beetroot jasmine rice.”

All small plates are $7 to $14.

Coyne opened Tiger Bar and The Champagne Room in February 2020 — 36 days before COVID forced her to close the new spots that share a divided storefront at the corner of Truman and Duval.

They reopened in July 2020 and have been providing guests with an epicurean adventure and a bubbly breath of fresh air with every visit.

The Champagne Room is open from 3 to 11 p.m. and Tiger Exotic Eats is open 6 to 10 p.m., but closed on Mondays.

It should always be purpose over profit. I always feel like cutting hair means everyone needs you at different moments. Fathers bring in their sons for their first haircut and there’s trust in that and the bond you build is par none. When it’s done right it becomes a brotherhood.

My first job in Key West was at JCPenney. I was the Al Bundy of shoes at JCPenney.

My wife has always kept pushing me. That woman is the best thing that ever happened to me.

My three kids get the same version of me.

I love them the same, so the expectation is the same. I expect a lot out of them.

All work and no play? Nah. Darian, Eric and Sergio Castellanos take a break at Beards & Brews.

ric Castellanos was raised on tough love, but it was his father’s devotion that instilled a strict work ethic without any tolerance for excuses.

From his father’s father, the value of family was passed down to Eric, who is a living example of those principles for his three children. Two of them, Darian and Sergio, work alongside their father in the family businesses today.

Long before Addison’s Barber Parlor became the quintessential experience for men’s haircuts in Key West, and years before he imaginatively fused art, barbering and a neighborhood bar into what is now Beards & Brews on Stock Island, Eric Castellanos knew the world owed him nothing; that to get ahead, he had to apply the lessons his grandfather and father had taught and showed him throughout his early life.

In their own words, Eric Castellanos and his sons share the lessons of wisdom, integrity and unconditional love of family that have been imparted through the generations.

OWNER, ADDISON’S BARBER PARLOR / BEARDS & BREWS Every barber should honor the code. Clients talk to you. When you’re a real barber you honor the code of confidentiality. You don’t want to be a gossip queen behind the chair. There’s honor in that.

My friends used to think I was crazy, that opening one and then two barber shops was too big a risk. You have to push through the naysayers if you want to succeed.

I started cutting hair at 14. I was cutting my friends’ and other guys’ hair from the football team in my backyard for $5 a cut. It was putting money in my pocket and my parents weren’t well off back then. The struggle was real.

If I could go back and tell my 18-year-old self something it would be, don’t wait until you’re 33 to get your shit going in the right direction.

My father was always strong and supportive and a badass DJ. To my understanding my grandfather worked in government and raised my dad real hard. My dad owned Joe’s Records and he opened Miami’s first daytime gay bar called The Second Landing. But the music game took its toll on him. He almost died working two jobs for his family while going back to school to become a cardiopulmonologist. But it stuck with me. Sometimes you have to work 24 hours a day.

Everything was falling into place until COVID hit. It was too good to be true. We were working on Beards & Brews and I was ready to pull my investment. But we just kept persevering. We had a lot of clients that were good to us. They know who they are. And I will always be thankful to all of them.

Raising kids today is hard. You’re doing it against social media. They think they know everything because it’s on Facebook or Tik Tok. I define my children’s success through watching them accomplish what they set out to do. Watching them set goals and reach them brings peace to me. They can do no wrong to me. Except when they don’t listen to me. That’s one thing that upsets me.

I’m most at peace when I am at home after work and I get to snuggle on the couch with my wife and family. If your family isn’t around when you’re making it, what’s the point of succeeding? You’re nothing without your family. If they don’t love and adore you, you have nothing. Because that’s who you’re doing it for.

GREGORIO “DARIAN” CASTELLANOS, 22 BARBER / RAPPER

I grew up in a barber shop. I liked how happy everyone was there. I heard good conversations and how the community really works. I learned to cut hair on my grandpa’s friends and my friends. And when I got good I started cutting everybody.

Risky Blunt is my stage name. I fell in love with rap in high school here in Key West. We rapped at lunch in circle battles. Some would clown each other. Some did it to express themselves. But it was always a good vibe and a good time. I just really got into it and took it seriously. Today I have over 500,000 streams from across the world on all platforms.

Cutting hair and hip-hop are both art. Both are literally expressions. In the chair everyone brings up music. And when you’re in the industry, rappers always need haircuts. It definitely goes hand in hand.

Cutting hair has taught me confidence. I started taking it seriously as I got older and got my first chair at 14. Being younger, people would misjudge me by my cover, but I got really good really quick. It’s crazy, because it’s a small island, but the seven barbers I was always around here are still the best I’ve ever seen. So just growing up and watching, I feel like I’m a hybrid of them.

What people don’t understand about rap is you have to be willing to grind effortlessly.

You hear about people blowing up out of nowhere and that’s not true. You have to grind for years. You need capital, an investment plan and a budget.

I’m proud of opening up for some of the biggest rappers in the world, like Little Dirk and Kevin Gates, in front of 10,000 people at a sold-out Orlando Fairgrounds Amphitheater.

I think my dad wants me to always better myself. I’ve always worked hard and strived to be a better person because of my dad.

One of my favorite rap lyrics is one I wrote.

“Call it what you wanna … I do it for my mamma.” Because what’s more important than your mom?

My dad is proud that I am determined. And that I want to be like him in bettering my family. To give until it hurts and to always be known as a good person.

My father taught me the art of barbering. It is a lifelong experience. And that patience is a virtue.

Watching my dad with my mom is a beautiful example of a healthy relationship. I’ve seen them overcome obstacles and keep us together as a solid family unit. By watching

them it taught me to always love your wife and to always treat her like you’re still trying to get her. To just love your wife no matter what.

My favorite memory with dad was catching a 35-pound tuna on 10-pound test line. It would have been a world record had my dad not grabbed the rod, but he wanted to make sure I had it.

Making music allows me to speak my mind with no filter. To get out my anger and express happiness, love for my wife, things I’ve been through. I like to see how it affects people in the moment.

The best advice I’ve gotten from dad is “sometimes you’ve got to cut off the rotten apples because they can spoil the rest of them.”

SERGIO CASTELLANOS, 18

BAR MANAGER, BEARDS AND BREWS / PROFESSIONAL DJ Being behind a bar is a lot like being a DJ. You have to be good at making people groove and have a good time. Both are like being someone’s counselor. In just one song you can keep or lose someone’s attention or mindset. So with both, you are always aware of your heart rate and are always asking, ‘Am I in the conversation? Do I see how everyone feels and vibes?’

Something most people don’t know is that I worked on a farm for three months after Irma. It was a place where Wagyu beef comes from called Eleven Oaks.

Working on a farm taught me discipline, hard work and dedication. It taught me to get my hands dirty and work. When I lived there, nothing was really given to me. It was a privilege to live with the family that gave me that chance and to be around them and work in their structures of being in a different lifestyle and seeing life from a different perspective.

It’s not easy waking up at 5 a.m. to do farm chores before a school day.

I learned something about my dad when I moved away to Pennsylvania after (Hurricane) Irma and it seemed like things had hit rock bottom. But my parents still managed to keep the family motivated and moving forward. It was never a “woe is me” moment and we refurbished what got damaged.

If you’ve ever ridden a horse you would know it’s more than just putting your heel to the pressure point of the horse. But if you take the time to build a relationship with it, they actually listen to you. You just have to talk to them and they will go exactly where you want them to go.

One of my favorite memories with dad was from February of this year. I threw a show with a Spanish Reggaeton artist named El Luniko with a group of promoters. And my dad showed up. I didn’t even know he was coming. It was awesome that he got to see one of the biggest concerts I’ve done and he congratulated me on how great it was. It was a great memory.

The best advice from my dad is “when you try to look cool, you end up looking like a fool.”

Something I’ve learned from my father is teach your kids your family history so they don’t make past mistakes. Teach them to be wise and mindful of self so they can be successful.

I would describe my dad as a f--king genius. A tsunami could hit this island and he could be the last person alive and rebuild it afterwards. He has an unbelievable amount of ideas that work, with the ambition of a hungry great white. He’s just non-stop.

The perfect Father’s Day gift for my dad would be a vacation.

ou could hear the Pan Am reunion party on June 9 at Tavernier’s Atlantic Bay Resort before seeing it: the thrum of a disco beat and the loud cocktail conversation. A party was in full steam, with glasses clicking and hoots of laughter, and a backdrop of the sea and palm trees. This group of friends looked ecstatic to be together.

Since 2013, Tavernier resident Hedy Menendez has been organizing a semi-annual National/Pan Am reunion in the Florida Keys for about 40 to 90 friends. “It’s my great joy being able to bring everyone together,” she told Keys Weekly.

The location is fitting, since the birthplace of Pan Am was in the Keys — Key West, to be exact.

In 1927, Pan American World Airways started offering flights from Key West to Cuba at 301 Whitehead St. From that time until it folded in 1991, Pan Am was the largest international air carrier in the United States.

Menendez’s friends were eager to talk to Keys Weekly and share what working at Pan Am was really like. Most of the attendees were Pan Am employees of many decades, starting in the 1970s.

FLIGHT ATTENDANTS SHARE INSIDE SCOOP OF LIFE AT PAN AM DURING KEYS REUNION Over the years, the image of Pan Am flight attendants has acquired a glamorous luster. And yes, back in the day, they were called “stewards” and “stewardesses.”

The 1950s through 1980s is generally considered the “golden age of traveling,” the era before 9/11, exploding shoes, 3-ounce liquid container limits, cranky TSA lines and ever-diminishing seat sizes and food options.

A short-lived TV show on ABC in 2011-12 called “Pan Am” focused on the elegance of air travel in the early 1960s. The stewardesses had similar youthful ages, heights, figures, hair, makeup and uniforms with precisely the same hats, white gloves, panty hose and shellacked hair. In the first episode of “Pan Am,” a character was suspended for — horrors — not wearing a girdle.

“The girdles were from another era,” said a party goer during a group conversation at one of the reunion’s tables. The former employees said the rumors of strict uniform and physical standards were mostly true, though by the 1970s, standards had relaxed a little.

“But we needed back-up panty hose, in case one pair got a hole in it,” said another attendee, who pointed out that supervisors checked what they packed.

And every day during a mandatory eightweek job training, which was intense with lessons about how to evacuate a plane, they had weigh-ins. The employees called these “fat checks.”

Billy Rosenbalm, who flew for Pan Am from 1977 to 1991, said his appointed maximum weight was 155 pounds. “And I was always 165,” he said, laughing. “They told me to jog around before I weighed myself.”

But despite the obsessive focus on appearance, these stewards and stewardesses loved their jobs.

Party guest Sally Morris, who flew Pan Am from 1978 to 1991, remembers having a layover in St. Thomas and thinking, “I’m getting paid for this.”

A table full of former Pan Am employees ticked through a list of all the celebs they served on flights, which is perhaps a phenomenon that doesn’t happen on commercial flights anymore due to the prevalence of private flying. But the list is a who’s who of the biggest stars of the 1970s and 1980s: Jimmy Buffett, Michael Jackson, Goldie Hawn, the whole cast of “Dynasty,” Don Johnson … and yes, there was partying.

One former flight attendant said a famous 1970s rock star sneaked in certain substances to make his all-night flight a little more fun. And another employee said they had a female passenger do some “streaking,” the 1970s fad of running naked in a public place. The streaker was climbing over passengers in the middle seats, and the captain had to be summoned from the cockpit. He ran back with a blanket to cover her. The story made news headlines.

11 And another ex-Pan Am employee said that on layovers in Rome, the staff would clean the bar cart of the booze, take it back to their hotel rooms, strip the beds of sheets, then wear them like togas ... because they were in Rome.

Longtime Pan Am employee Debbie Shannon said, “We traveled the world together, experienced moments of pure terror, and we bonded so closely.”

Speaking of terror, reunion guest Kathi Rutter said, “We blew an engine going out of New York, and James Coburn was in first class, as white as a sheet.” Rutter said the flight ended up okay.

Shannon pointed out, “Safety was our number one job — we weren’t just a waitress in the skies.”

At different times during the party, the longtime friends spontaneously kicked off their flip-flops to dance, sang “Barbara Ann” en masse while gathering for a group photo and often threw their heads back in laughter.

12 Orli Stryren is still flying after 42 years.

She started with Pan Am in the 1970s and has worked for American Airlines for 30 years. “I meet other flight attendants from other airlines, and they can’t believe we have these reunions. We were all in our 20s and grew up together in a foreign country. All we had was each other. I love these people. The memories are precious.”

Former Pan Am stewardess Joey Miller has one memory in particular that she’ll never forget.

“The flight was from LA to JFK and it was Christmas, and not many people were on the flight. So we moved them all into first class. Then we lit candles and sang Christmas carols,” she said, smiling, looking into the distance and swaying, as if moved by the memory.

Like his uncle, William Fitzpatrick English was the son of wealthy South Carolina plantation owners. English would join the elder Fitzpatrick in Key West and, for a time, worked in his uncle’s salt ponds. At some point, English would become the master of the schooner Brilliant and enter the wrecking industry.

By 1837, English had moved to Indian Key, where he lived in the shadow of the island’s largest structures, two three-story warehouses. At least four buildings were likely associated with the English property: the main house, kitchen, and slave quarters. The kitchen was a free-standing building for good reasons. Among them was the fact that the fire used for cooking produced tremendous heat. Second, it was important to keep the kitchen building separate from the primary home in case of the accidental spread of fire.

The kitchen was built atop a cistern, a valuable resource as there was no other source of fresh water on the island. The cistern would collect rainwater through gutter systems leading from the roof.

Multiple slave quarters would have stood behind the main house for his slaves: Binah English, Lucy English, Chasy English, Mary English, Ellen English and Alexander English.

English was not the island’s only slave owner. Before the Civil War, slave ownership was common. Ten of the country’s first 12 presidents were slave owners, including the fifth president of the United States and Monroe County namesake, James Monroe.

The two presidents who were not slave owners were John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams. On Indian Key, among the island’s other slave owners were Charles Howe, postmaster; S.A. Spencer, proprietor of the Tropical Hotel (the first hotel established in the Florida Keys outside of Key West); and Jacob Housman.

It was July 25, 1837, when Indians attacked Captain John Whalton of the lightship Florida and his crew on Key Largo.

Whalton and one crew member were killed.

Reports indicate that two wreckers, one being William English from the ship Brilliant, approached the Key Largo site, came ashore and retrieved the bodies. They were taken to Indian Key, where Whalton, according to some sources, was buried.

English followed in his uncle’s footsteps in other ways, too. After Fitzpatrick’s properties along both the Miami and New rivers were abandoned during the second escalation of the Seminole War, English bought them in hopes of reviving the plantations.

English moved to the Miami River plantation, where his slaves built two natural stone structures. One of these was a twostory home with three-foot thick walls, built as a home for English. The other was built to house his slaves, many of whom worked in his plantation fields.

English, too, entered the political game.

In 1840, English was elected to represent Dade County at the Florida Territorial Congress. He would serve from 1840 to 1844.

At the March 1844 meeting of the Territorial Congress, English lobbied to have the county seat moved from Indian Key and relocated to what had initially been called Fort Dallas and later renamed Miami. As Indian Key had been all but abandoned by 1844, the bill passed into law on March 9.

When Indian hostilities reignited with the third escalation of the Seminole War, English, like his uncle before him, abandoned his plantation and returned to the safer confines of Key West. Subsequently, the U.S. Army would take over English’s property, use his stone structures, and reestablish Fort Dallas.

At Key West, English and Uncle Richard bought the schooner Commodore Stockton and decided to sail off on a golden adventure. They sailed south, navigating Cape Horn, Chile, at the last tip of South America, before turning northwest and setting a course for California. Not interested in the beaches, they headed to the northern part of the state, possibly docking at San Francisco before heading inland to the Sacramento area. The hope was to become a part of California’s gold rush, make a fortunate claim and come out of the whole ordeal rich.

As is so often the case, the reality was unable to live up to the dream that had spurred their adventure. While in Grass Valley, California, in 1855, English was riding on a horse. When he went to dismount, his rifle accidentally discharged and the bullet struck him in the side. William English would succumb to the wound and bring an end to his story.

T

he History of Diving Museum in Islamorada hosted its first-ever “pop-up” event with renowned marine life artist and conservationist Wyland.

The painter treated audiences to live painting in the museum library in a traditional Japanese style where lines are omitted by the painter but mentally filled in by viewers. The one-of-a-kind originals were auctioned off to benefit the museum as well as the Wyland Foundation. Wyland’s “Aquarius’’ was also on site and will be on exhibit at the museum until Dec. 31.

The piece honors legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau as well as the Aquarius underwater habitat. The water-based oil paints were non-toxic to marine life, Wyland assured everyone. The conservationist completed the entire painting on one tank of air, in “plein air style painting, but underwater,” he said.

As a special capstone, Wyland invited Cousteau’s grandson, Fabien, to paint his grandfather’s iconic red cap. In true Wyland humor, the artist joked, “I fixed it afterwards.

Don’t tell him (Fabien).”

TRAVEL GETS TRICKY POST-COVID

T

he past year forced a number of unwelcome, and thankfully temporary, changes. Instead of grabbing our favorite table with friends, we opted for takeout. We gave up live theater, music and sports, streaming what we could in order to get our cultural fix. Most facets of life were able to at least cough up a slightly dulled alternative.

But there was one element that couldn’t, by its very nature, come up with a reasonable facsimile — travel. There’s simply no other way to scratch the itch of leaving the rock for greener pastures for a few days.

We all travel differently. Some crave the sensation of getting lost in an effervescent city, absorbing unknown languages, others prefer to land at a posh spa with a cocktail in hand. The common thread is the desire for something “other,” something “elsewhere.” In a year where most of us became intimately familiar with our living room walls, travel suffered.

If there was any doubt about the power of good, old-fashioned wanderlust, one need look no further than current airfares and hotel occupancy rates.

With vaccination rates on the rise and the start of a collective reopening, the desire to bust out of our homes and onto the globe is strong. But as we start to make our daydreams a reality, there are a few considerations in this new normal.

Cost is the most glaring. As expected, a twitchy population suddenly turned loose on the world has caused a surge in the travel industry. Labor shortages and supply chain disruptions make for some textbook supply-and-demand problems. The obvious workarounds are to simply wait longer (unfathomable!) or choose out-of-the-way destinations (I hear Boise is nice this time of year).

For those who just cannot resist the pull of the exotic, and have the funds to get there, the next hurdle involves navigating public safety requirements, which differ from country to country. Some countries still require a full two-week quarantine upon arrival, others just ask for a negative COVID test within the prior 24 hours. France and Spain just announced they would be open to U.S. travelers who can provide proof of full vaccination status. Most European countries are relying on a color-coded system to determine the level of stringency — counting fellow EU nations, Australia, Israel, Singapore and South Korea as green and qualifying COVID hotspots like Brazil, Turkey and India as red. The United States is broadly considered to be orange.

3 My own travel craving intensified with the approach of my 10th wedding anniversary.

It was convenient for justification purposes, inconvenient for my credit line. If my wife’s bucket list and mine were a Venn diagram, the overlapping places are still solidly “red.” Europe felt unnecessarily complicated. A few days in Maine sounded perfect, but the $400/night standard brand hotels and $200/day rental cars would leave almost no cash for lobster rolls. I checked our temperate neighbors to the north, but they still require a 14-day quarantine before you’re able to enjoy your poutine outside the comfort of a hotel room. Discouraged, I took my search off the beaten path and found a few trips to smaller cities, like Austin, with price tags hovering around normal pre-COVID levels. But damn it, 10 years deserves more than Texas! (No offense, Austin, you’re truly lovely.)

In the end, I couldn’t justify the steep rental car fees of the Northeast, but I could certainly talk myself into spending an unseemly amount of money on a luxury retreat in the Costa Rican rainforest for a few days. I adore Costa Rica but haven’t seen it in years, as I typically feel a greater pull toward places with a bit less tourist presence. For our current state of travel though, Costa Rica felt familiar enough to be comfortable, but “elsewhere” enough to be interesting.

Airfare to this Central American green gem was about $250 higher than average and hotel costs were up roughly 30%. Not great, but justifiable. Flights were also fewer and further between, forcing some odd scheduling choices, but again, still within the range of reasonable.

Entry requirements have relaxed, but still require mandatory health insurance that can be used to cover up to $50,000 in medical expenses and $2,000 in extended-stay costs while in the country. U.S. travelers can either provide proof of their own insurance (our Florida Blue plan didn’t cut it) or purchase insurance through government-approved agencies for about $20/day. The only other hoop requires taking a quick online health survey 72 hours prior to your arrival. Easy enough.

Perception and reality can surely differ, but expectations based on a little research tell me we can anticipate fully open national parks and mostly unfettered access to bars and restaurants. Many businesses are still operating at 50% capacity and requiring masks — likely with good reason. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the country’s profile was, sadly, just elevated due to a “very high” level of COVID infections. That very high level, though, still represents a number of cases that’s less than 1% of the current number of cases in the US. As travelers, we have to consider our impact on other places, and their

reciprocal impact on us. As a fully vaccinated wanderer, this feels like a reasonable undertaking wherein we have a level of protection and can also expect to not pass anything dangerous to the local populations.

Reciprocity extends beyond physical health. I’m fortunate to be able to travel to a stunning destination, but also want to know that the money I’m spending has a positive impact. As Key Westers know all too well, tourist economies have been especially hard hit by the pandemic and Costa Rica is no exception.

At this point, their visitation numbers are down 76% from 2020, a year that was already several notches below normal pre-COVID levels.

Of course, Costa Rica serves only as an example of what the world may look like beyond the bounds of the US right now. Much of it we’re learning as we go. The best advice for summer wanderers is to simply pay attention to shifting rules, jump through all the hoops, and then enjoy a well-earned vacation.

I’ll touch base and update this story when we return, to let you know how the reality jived (or not) with our expectations. After all, the best laid plans…
