eliberation didn’t take long as the Islamorada Village Council selected Port St. Lucie Mayor Gregory J. Oravec as its next village manager during a June 2 meeting.

Inside the council chambers at Founders Park Community Center, three final candidates gave their pitches and answered pressing questions from the dais throughout the afternoon. The day before, finalists met with village staff and community members for a meet-and-greet at the Jacobs Aquatic Center.

Following a brief discussion on how to go about picking the next manager, a motion made by councilman David Webb to select Oravec, 46, as the village manager was met with a second by councilman Henry Rosenthal. “Yes” votes from Mayor Buddy Pinder and councilmen Pete Bacheler and Mark Gregg made the decision unanimous.

Oravec is a native Floridian who graduated from the University of Miami. Before graduating, he began a career in local government. It’s now spanned the last 23 years and has included appointments as city planner,

redevelopment director, assistant city manager and city manager.

Oravec is no stranger to Islamorada. In 1999, he spent some time in the village as an assistant planner.

Elected mayor in November 2014 and again in 2018, he became the first mayor in the city’s history to be reelected without opposition.

Oravec said he’s looking forward to working with the council, staff, residents and the business community to make Islamorada “better tomorrow than it is today.”

“My family and I are incredibly grateful. We’re excited. We can’t wait to get to work,” Oravec told the Keys Weekly following the meeting. “We can’t wait to get to know the village council, the staff and people of Islamorada as we work hard and smart together on making what’s already a spectacular waterfront community even better.”

Oravec’s family includes his wife, Tonia; children Alexander, Christian, Kaitlyn and Aric. Oravec likes to give back to his community, including volunteering in public schools and the Adopt-A-Street Program. In his down time, he likes to read, fish, surf and garden.

It’s really exciting to join the village,” he said. “It’s a surreal moment.”

A nationwide search for Islamorada’s next manager comes following the resignation of Seth Lawless last summer due to health reasons. Maria Bassett, current finance director, took the helm on an interim basis. Initial recruitment of candidates a few months ago saw just over 80 applying for the position.

From 12 candidates, the list of finalists for Islamorada’s next manager dwindled to five during a May 19 special meeting of the village council.

Andrea Agha, Guillermo Olmedillo, Oravec, Terry Suggs and David Baird were selected as finalists. Baird withdrew his name from consideration on May 21.

Oravec said he wants to share his passion with a community he called a “special place” and an “incredible waterfront village.”

“Through communicating with the public and staff through council, we can build something we can make you proud of,” he said. “We are small and mighty.”

Contract discussions will start “as soon as possible,” said Pinder, who pointed to Oravec’s experience and his achievements in Port St. Lucie as the deciding factors in choosing him as next village manager.

“It was probably one of the most important decisions — if not the most important decision — in our tenure on council,” Pinder told the Weekly following the decision. “I called city councilwoman Jolien Caraballo from Port St. Lucie and she gave very top remarks.

Just the way he handled questions of strategic planning and going into the future 10 to 20 years. … We’re in for a great ride here.”

The village council next meets on Wednesday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Founders Park Community Center.

Living in paradise has a price that many Keys residents in low-lying areas know all too well: water coming into your house and causing damage, making your former dream home unlivable. Monroe County proposes a solution: The Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant (FMA) for individual homeowners throughout the county to reduce or eliminate flood damage in their homes.

County staff propose to work with homeowners who have flood insurance to develop applications to secure funding from FEMA for elevating, acquiring or reconstructing their homes. Mike Lalbachan, a mitigation administrator for the county’s building department, is gathering interested applicants for the FMA grant.

At a recent presentation on the grant to the Board of County Commissioners, Lalbachan pointed out that “Monroe County is at the forefront of sea level rise.” Studies show that 100 years from now, the sea level will be 5 feet higher than it is now, and 13 inches higher by 2045.

“We want to start this as soon as possible,” he said, referring to making homes flood resilient through elevation, acquisition or reconstruction.

Lalbachan’s department will vet the applications from homeowners who have flood insurance and have experienced flood damage in the past, then the applications will be submitted to FEMA by the county. If accepted, applicants can expect a cap of $150,000 toward elevating a house or reconstructing a house.

For example, Lalbachan said, since Summerland Key has experienced flooding in the past, particularly after Irma, the FMA grant can help pay for a ground level home in that area to be elevated on stilts. But he has a caveat: Applicants need to get an estimate of what the elevation will cost from a contractor.

“And there are limited contractors in the Keys who have knowledge of the elevation process,” he said. “Some homes built in the ’60s or ’70s have different foundations. Contractors tend not to know the ins and outs of the elevation process, and that can be a complication.”

Lalbachan said the county has a list of licensed contractors that they can give out for applicants to get an estimate, but the applicants will have to do the

research into whether the contractor has experience with elevating.

And reconstructing a flood-damaged house tends to be more expensive than elevating, he pointed out. “It’s very rare that it’s below $150,000. You have to put in the difference from your pocket, whether the demo and rebuild is $300,000 or $500,000.”

Keys Weekly once wrote about a long-time Marathon resident whose ground-level ocean-side house was destroyed by floods after Irma swept through. The homeowner bought and installed an elevated modular home a year later. Lalbachan said that as long as this homeowner had flood insurance, this is an example of a situation that the FMA grant could assist with.

Lalbachan suggests that homeowners get their applications in early. He has not had any applications submitted yet, but many phone calls. Applications will be internally reviewed and then submitted to FEMA around September.

EXPENSIVE ESCAPE Keys visitors pay sky-high prices at shorthanded hotels

Those aren’t monthly rents or mortgage payments. They were nightly room rates at Key West hotels for the Memorial Day weekend, according to prices listed last weekend on Expedia. com, They don't include the additional daily resort and parking fees that typically add about $40 per night to published room rates.

As of May 6, Key West hotel prices were among the highest in the country, with Islamorada and Marathon filling the No. 2 and 3 slots, according to a survey by cheaphotels.org that included all hotels rated three or more stars in destinations all over the country that were either near a beach or an urban center.

In Islamorada, prices for stays last weekend were as high as $1,009 a night at Cheeca Lodge. Rooms at La Siesta Resort & Marina were $1,003 a night, while Postcard Inn Beach Resort & Marina was around $766.

In Marathon, hotel room rates have increased by nearly 50% based on a Google search of accommodations in the Middle Keys when compared to tourist reports from 2019 during the month of May. In 2019, the average room rate in the Middle Keys was $230; now it’s up to about $336.

And yes, plenty of people are paying those prices.

“Our occupancy is way beyond where it should be right now,” Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys & Key West, told the Keys Weekly last week.

“But as soon as occupancy drops, hotels will lower their rates. For now, they’re riding this wave and trying to recoup what they lost during the pandemic closures. It’s not that they’re being greedy, but as a business you don’t want to leave money on the table when people are willing to pay it, and are filling these rooms.”

equivalent of a month's rent in most cities for a single night in Key West or Islamorada.

But throughout the state and nation, staffing shortages are also unprecedented, prompting many in the hospitality and leisure industries to ask: What do these visitors get when they arrive? And could the sky-high hotel rates backfire on a destination when visitors don’t get the service they expect for the price they paid to be here?

Stacey Mitchell, director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC), is asking — and trying to answer — the same questions.

“There is such pent-up demand for people to get away, wherever they can go, and a lot of people have an unparalleled amount of savings right now, whether it’s from stimulus money, or from not spending it on other trips for the past year and a half,” Mitchell said.

“Visitors are willing to overlook many shortcomings in terms of service and places being short-staffed,” Mitchell said.

“That tolerance will only last so long. We are forecasting a future where value for price paid, and services commensurate with the price point, will be instrumental in maintaining our market share and the integrity of our brand,” Mitchell wrote in a recent report to Keys tourism officials.

In other words, people won’t always be willing to overlook our shortcomings in service, in a location for which they’ve paid dearly, and will soon expect to get what they paid for.

“There’s no doubt that throughout Florida and nationally, the travel and tourism industry is struggling to meet the needs of this sudden and unprecedented boom in business,” said Mitchell, who just returned from a tourism conference at a hotel in St. Augustine Beach.

The host hotel, whose brand is known for its included breakfasts and nightly manager's happy hour, was not offering those services.

"They just don't have the staff,” she said.

Weinhofer, of the lodging association, has heard of all the same staffing challenges — and the same disbelief about exorbitant room rates.

“We have general managers cleaning rooms so they can check people in,” Weinhofer said. “And I’ve had general managers and front desk managers say they’re embarrassed to tell people their nightly room rates.

“But they’ve all been warned, and they already knew, this won’t last,” Weinhofer said, adding that once the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe reopen and once cruise ships start sailing again throughout the world, the demand, and prices, will drop significantly.

“The hotel industry is second only to the airline industry when it comes to reacting quickly to the marketplace,” she said. “The minute their occupancy drops, their rates will drop. But right now, our occupancy numbers are way beyond where they should be. And it’s not just Key West. For the first time ever, Islamorada’s average daily hotel room rate was higher than Key West’s last week.

“I think everyone figures this will be over by the end of summer, and they’re just riding the wave now, while people are willing to pay these rates, to get out of the hole they were in at the height of the pandemic, when no one was going anywhere,” Weinhofer said.

But are visitors complaining when they pay $800 per night at a chain hotel that’s usually affordable, and then don’t get daily housekeeping service in their room, or the free hot breakfast in the lobby?

“I won’t lie. I think there are definitely some complaints, and I’m sure some brands are getting hammered, especially by their VIP members who accumulate points each stay,” Weinhofer said. “But the same things are happening everywhere, and I do think most properties are doing a good job of letting people know they’re short-staffed and explaining the situation.”

WHAT’S NEXT? Publix moving to old Kmart building in Key Largo

A

vacant parking lot and a shuttered Kmart storefront at Tradewinds Plaza in Key Largo won’t be empty for long.

Kmart’s recent closure has opened an opportunity for one grocery store currently located at the plaza.

Maria Brous, Publix director of communications, confirmed to the Keys Weekly that the Publix store is relocating within the plaza.

Timing has yet to be determined, she said.

May 24 marked the final day for the Kmart store at Tradewinds Plaza in Key Largo. With the Marathon closing in mid-May, Kmart’s presence in the Upper and Middle Keys came to an official end after it was learned months earlier that job postings sought temporary positions for store closings.

Shelves and stock eventually whittled away to empty space with nothing but support beams and ceiling lights. In recent months, parts of the Marathon store, like the former toy department, were blocked off. Instead of a selection of small appliances, entire aisles were filled with the same make and model of microwaves, for example.

The same went for the Key Largo store, where blocked-off areas shrunk the store. While the toy and clothes departments remained, the seasonal section, electronics area and outdoors department were barricaded.

Eventually, blowout sales and everything must go signs were posted.

The community learned of the impending Kmart closures in late March when Transformco, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, listed temporary customer service jobs for “store closing” at locations in Key Largo, Marathon and a store in California.

The Kmart building that Publix will occupy in Key Largo is roughly 102,400-square-foot. A suitor for the empty, 52,500-square-foot store in Marathon has not been announced.

Kmart’s store in Key West wasn’t put on the chopping block and remains open.

The closure of Sears in Key West last summer was done in a similar way. The Key West Sears opened in 1965 in the New Town shopping center.

With both stores shuttered, and one in California also closing, about 20 Kmart stores remain. As for Sears stores, only 28 remain.

was a big year for the Florida Keys.

New waves of wreckers were arriving to try their luck on the Florida Reef. Two of these men were Joshua Appleby and Captain John Fiveash. They sailed into the West Indies in 1822 and established a small community at Key Vaca called Port Monroe.

The two placed a “Notice to Mariners” in the Pensacola newspaper The Floridian on Feb. 10, 1823.

The announcement touted Port Monroe as having “the advantages of a large and spacious harbor and the proprietors are furnished with experienced pilots, good vessels, boats, and provisions of all kinds to relieve those who may be so BRAD unfortunate as to get on the Florida BERTELLI Reef.”

The year 1823 was also when ... is the curator Commodore David Porter, in for Islamorada’s charge of the West Indies SquadKeys History & ron — created to eradicate piracy, Discovery Center.

Porter also observed wreckers operating along the Florida Reef. He wrote a letter to Thompson voicing his concerns regarding the limited written statutes governing wrecking laws. He also commented on what, at times, were the astronomical salvage claims being awarded.

On July 2, Monroe County was established as the Florida Territory’s sixth county. Monroe County was a much larger slice of real estate in 1823 and stretched from Key West to the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee and west to Charlotte Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico.

Two days after Monroe County was created, the Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida, George Murray president, passed the Salvage Act. Among its 14 parts were statutes requiring the salvaged property to be reported to the nearest justice-of-thepeace or notary public. Additionally, it would prove the officer’s duty to oversee the assembly of a five-member arbitration jury to decide all fees for the salvage operation. Section 14 of the act stated, “Be it further enacted, That if any person shall within this territory, make or hold out any false lights, or make any device, or do any other act or thing with intent to mislead, bewilder or decoy the mariners of any vessel on the high seas, whereby such vessel may be cast ashore, or get aground, such person or persons so offending, and every accessory thereto, shall on conviction thereof be deemed guilty of Felony, and shall suffer death.”

Tales of skullduggery and “false lights,” while pervasive in wrecker lore, were rarely documented. The inclusion of Section 14, however, indicates that the legends were rooted in some truths.

Generally speaking, wrecking was life-threatening work performed by honest, hard-working men. The primary job was to salvage as much life and property from a distressed ship as humanly possible. Often thought of as little better than pirates, while wreckers fully expected to be paid for their services, they would not hold a cutlass to your throat for the chance to make a buck.

Indeed, like lawyers and used car salesmen, there were bad apples. After all, in the early years of the American wrecking period, the laws were loose and enforcement looser on the reef.

Appleby proved to be one of these bad apples and formed a business relationship with Charles Hopner, master of the Columbian privateer La Centilla. Hopner would “gently wreck” his ship on a reef, and Appleby would sail out and salvage the goods, bring his salvage claim to Key West, and collect his money. Appleby would then split the profit with Hopner.

The activity at Port Monroe caught the attention of Porter who wrote, “I am under the impression that the practice of wrecking Spanish vessels on the coast

by Columbian cruisers, in order to secure their cargoes, has, for a long time past been pursued to a considerable extent, and that the establishment at Key Vacas was made with this object in view.”

Appleby was subsequently arrested and taken to Rhode Island. Court proceedings dragged on for years. Appleby returned to the Florida Territory. In 1837, he undertook the keeper position at the Sand Key Lighthouse, where he served until the lighthouse was destroyed by the 1846 Great Havana Hurricane.

Over 250 people died as a result of the storm. Included among the casualties were Appleby, 77, along with his daughter, 51, and grandson, 11. Why Appleby is remembered today is largely due to the Keeper-class Coast Guard cutter named to honor him. The Joshua Appleby was the sixth of 14 Keeper-class cutters named after lighthouse keepers. The ship was commissioned on Aug. 8, 1998, and is based out of St. Petersburg. The official motto of the Joshua Appleby is “The Wrecking Keeper.”

ngelika “Angie” Pridgen was recently named the 2020 Volunteer of the Year for Keys History & Discovery Center. A volunteer for about a year-and-a-half, Pridgen was a significant participant in the past year as the center reopened the museum in June, often working two shifts a week.

“We are grateful for all of our volunteers,” said Jill Miranda Baker, the executive director. “Yet Angie stood out for the numerous times she filled shifts when no one else was available.”

Pridgen was surprised with the honor during a recent Zoom event with other volunteers and members of the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation Board of Directors. She was given roses and a compass rose pendant.

The Discovery Center is staffed primarily by volunteers who serve as docents and greeters to guests. The center is seeking volunteers who have a special interest in the Upper Keys community and its history and ecology, as well as those interested in covering weekend shifts. Safety features in place include the requirement of face coverings to be worn throughout the visit, plexiglass shields at the point of payment, as well as the availability of hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes.

fter more than a year of virtual meetings, the Upper Keys Business & Professional Women (BPW) met in person to conduct its annual meeting recently in Islamorada.

Over 40 BPW members and guests gathered at Whale Harbor Restaurant on May 19 to reconnect and ring in a new year at the event, which was sponsored by the College of the Florida Keys.

“This past year brought so many unforeseen challenges, but I am so proud that our organization continued to provide meaningful and relevant support to our members,” said Suzi Youngberg, Upper Keys BPW president.

For more than 50 years, the BPW has been empowering women in the Upper Keys to achieve their full potential through a range of monthly meetings and programs, including awarding of scholarships for education and career advancement.

With close to 100 members, the Upper Keys BPW is the largest local organization within BPW/Florida.

The 2021-22 Upper Keys BPW board of directors was installed: Suzi Youngberg, president; Victoria Leonard, treasurer; Jill Kuehnert, secretary; Gina Boilini, vice president of development; Mary Houston, vice president of membership; Brittany Parker, vice president of hospitality; and Patricia Milian, director.

Three scholarship awards were also presented to women in the Up-

per Keys by the BPW’s scholarship committee in partnership with the Holly Given Fund.

The adult women scholarship program accepts applications and makes awards twice each year, with individual scholarships of up to $1,500 available to successful applicants.

This spring’s winners were: Jackie Patterson, for courses on how to teach reading strategies to struggling upper elementary and middle school students.

Lauren Sanchez, enrolled in the MDC and Nova Southeastern University master’s in health science and bachelor’s of applied science with a concentration in physician assistant studies program.

Chelsea Trawick, currently attending University of New England online to earn a master’s of science in applied nutrition.

“All of BPW’s fundraising came through virtual events and online donations this year. We are so grateful to our members and the local community for stepping up to ensure scholarship funds are available to support women,” said Gina Boilini, scholarship committee chair.

FORMER SHERIFF INDUCTED INTO FLORIDA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS’ HALL OF FAME

S

heriff Rick Ramsay recently represented Monroe County as former Sheriff John M. Spottswood was inducted into the Florida Law Enforcement Officers’ Hall of Fame.

“Sheriff Spottswood served this community in so many ways that it’s difficult to know where to start,” Ramsay said. “I do know it’s an honor to represent the citizens of Monroe County in honoring Sheriff Spottswood. His dedication to this community will never be forgotten.”

John M. Spottswood was born in Key West in 1920. Before entering the law enforcement profession, he served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain during World War II. He was elected sheriff of Monroe County in 1952, and was involved in numerous efforts with the Florida Sheriffs Association. One of these was the establishment of the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch in Suwanee County, for which he served as chair in the 1950s. Spottswood was named the association’s president in 1957, served as its legislative chair in 1961, and was also on the Sheriff’s Star editorial board in the 1950s and ’60s.

One of his many notable accomplishments while sheriff was his proposal for Florida’s first statewide law enforcement standards, which even included standardizing the design of sheriff’s uniforms and colors throughout the state. When Hurricane Donna struck in 1960, Spottswood provided the leadership necessary to guide his community through the disaster on the path toward recovery. His engagement in the community extended beyond law enforcement; he was also a fierce civil rights advocate, served as the head of civil defense, and for 10 years he was the assistant fire chief for Key West.

In 1963, he was elected to the Florida Senate, and went on to serve for four terms. Spottswood passed away in 1975.

The inductees were nominated by the Florida Sheriffs Association, Florida Police Chiefs Association, Police Benevolent Association, Fraternal Order of Police and the State Law Enforcement Chiefs’ Association, and then were selected by a committee. The inductees were approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida’s Cabinet.

The Florida Law Enforcement Officers’ Hall of Fame was created by the 2014 Florida Legislature to recognize and honor law enforcement officers.

Freebee resumes service in Islamorada As new cases of COVID-19 have decreased and the percentage of vaccinated people has increased, the Freebee electric vehicle ridesharing service will resume its original method of providing service — ridesharing.

This means that if you call for a ride, a second group of riders may be picked up if the stop is on the way to your destination. The social setting is part of the popularity of Freebee and the return to ridesharing will increase the level of service with reduced wait times.

Masks will continue to be required for drivers and riders.

The program serves all of Islamorada with two new electric vans that seat up to nine passengers and one Tesla X that can accommodate five passengers. The free service is available 70 hours a week at the following schedule: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Fridays, from 11 a.m. to midnight; Saturdays, from noon to midnight; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Amazon Prime reality show comes to Upper Keys A new reality show is pulling up to shore. On Wednesday, June 9 and Sunday, June 13, Angelyn and her band will transform Bud N’ Mary's and Hog Heaven Marina into concert venues as they film the new reality show “Yacht Stops.” The free concerts will take place from the deck

of the boat at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to hear Angelyn & the band.

“Yacht Stops” premiered on Amazon Prime on May 24 and takes viewers behind the scenes with Angelyn and her band as they dock in almost 20 ports to transform marinas into concert venues.

The band sails from port to port, performing from the deck of the boat they are living on, navigating not only the high seas but also the music business.

Between performances, Angelyn & the band serve as the crew and run the boat. They will have to fish to eat, all while dealing with the emotions, personalities and realities of what it takes to become an entertainer. Special guests like Edwin McCain, Maia Sharp, and more will meet up with the band along the way to offer advice and coaching. Michael Bloom is the co-creator of the show, with decades of experience in the industry. The season will wrap with a Fourth of July performance airing on Amazon Prime live from Miami.

CFFK marks 25th anniversary The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) hit a major milestone on May 1, commemorating 25 years of connecting people, resources and needs through philanthropy throughout the Keys.

As part of its silver celebration this year, all donors who support the Community Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Fund will have an extraordinary opportunity to double the impact of their contributions to help the Keys’ future. A significant legacy gift from the late Dr. Patricia Major is launching the ‘Major Match’ Campaign to match all gifts to the permanent fund dollar-for-dollar, up to $500,000.

The bequest from Major, a physician who lived and worked in Key West for more than 40 years until she passed away in late 2018, will multiply donations to the 25th Anniversary Fund and ensure the future viability and stability of philanthropy in the Keys. In addition to the “Major Match” campaign to mark the silver jubilee, the Community Foundation will host a special in-person Silver Anniversary Gala on Dec. 2, 2021, at the Key West Marriott Beachside.

ave you ever wanted to go to a beach but not known how conditions were right then?

Or showed up and thought something seemed off about the local waters? In those cases, Mote Marine Laboratory’s Beach Conditions Reporting System (BCRS) would have helped you figure out what was going on in real time.

“The BCRS is a website (visitbeaches.org) and accompanying mobile app that collects and disperses beach condition reports from participating locations along the coast of Florida and Alabama,” said Mote social media and community outreach manager Allison Baird. “The BCRS is dependent on trained volunteers (a.k.a. Beach Ambassadors) for daily conditions reports that are provided to the public via the website and app.”

Think of it like the popular mapping app Waze, but for the water. Just like satellites provide information on traffic flow on roads, BCRS automatically pulls in important official weather data. This tells users about things like air temperature, weather conditions, UV index, sunrise/sunset times.

Then, just like drivers mark where an accident or speed trap is on a road, Beach Ambassadors can submit reports on things like surf conditions, crowds, debris, water color, beach flag color, and more. This crowd-sourced data is collected and combined with the official data to give a complete picture of what the beach is like at that moment.

Users can even find information on beach/park amenities, see photos, and access additional governmental resources including information from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Florida’s Department of Health (FDOH), and more.

In Florida especially, the program also includes information on any respiratory irritation and dead fish observed, which are commonly associated with red tide. The aim is to help consumers make informed decisions, protect their health, and improve their

overall beach experience, Baird said.

After the reports are collected and shown, Mote and FWC compile the data for use in scientific research and decision making.

“Those that make reports are making a huge difference in both science and their community,” Baird

said.

BCRS aims to be your one-stop shop for all relevant beach information. The mission of the program is to provide accurate information on all the conditions that can affect a beach-goer’s experience and safety. Results are easily accessible to anyone on the website (visitbeaches.org) or by downloading the BCRS-Mote Marine Laboratory app to your mobile device. The user-friendly interface allows you to view reports made for all participating locations and stay up to date on daily beach conditions and the status of any red tide events, Baird said.

BCRS also helps visitors and the community play an active part in community science by submitting their own simple reports via the BCRS Community Science Portal.

Now, Mote has expanded the program into the Keys and is recruiting Beach Ambassadors to volunteer and train on how to submit accurate observations. Mote wants to measure water quality along our coasts, because it affects the local environment and community so deeply.

“The more we can effectively monitor beach conditions, the better we can understand our surrounding environment from a scientific and tourism perspective!” Baird said.

Volunteer diving for things like coral restoration is a great way to dive with a purpose and “give back” to our ocean environment. Other ways you can get involved is to participate in clean ups both above and below the water.

Marine debris is a real problem for corals because lines and trash can abrade corals and harm or kill them.

Old anchors can destroy coral heads that took hundreds of years to make.

And trash can pollute and harm corals and other animals.

By helping to remove trash from our shorelines and seas, you’ll help to keep our oceans clean and our corals healthy.

The other important thing you can do other than cleaning up our waters and shores is to help prevent plastics and other trash from entering our seas in the first place.

Switch to reusable straws, cutlery and bags. Everything is connected and everything helps.

Project Aware Dives Against Debris help to get trash out of the water and to keep corals (both wild and outplanted) safe. Call your local dive shop and ask if they’re running a cleanup dive.

cores of boats tied up to mooring buoys as divers and snorkelers explored remarkably clear waters off the Upper Keys on Memorial Day weekend. Hundreds of vessels took to sandbars off Whale Harbor and Port Antigua in Islamorada to enjoy pristine conditions.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation patrol boats closely watched for no-wake violators, drunk boaters and other infractions. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 13-8 boat containing four crew members — and the Coast Guard Station Islamorada’s newest commander — were also out providing a vital water safety mission.

While they don’t issue tickets, auxiliary crew members within Flotilla 13-8 spent the day on May 29 educating boaters on diver flags while in the water, no spearfishing in sanctuary preservation areas (SPA) and the correct way to tie up to a mooring buoy.

With a mission briefing by coxswain David Gross, four crew members hopped onto his 30-foot “Copa Cat” from his Venetian Shores dock. Heading north, the education effort got underway quickly as a boat entered the Snake Creek channel at a high rate of speed.

“This is a no-wake zone,” crew member Jim Doran said as the boater passed by.

The education didn’t stop there, as the patrol arrived at Hens & Chickens and Molasses reefs in Key Largo. Crew members were quick to spot several boats without a “diver down” flag, which Florida law requires to caution nearby boaters. One dive operator was also seen without a flag.

One group of visitors enjoying a snorkel in a rental boat at Molasses didn’t have a dive flag. Instead of forcing them back in the boat and back on land to retrieve one, Gross gave them his dive flag so they could enjoy their day.

“I have a lot of memories with this flag,” Gross told a female snorkeler. “Go on and enjoy this beautiful day.”

Crew members Richard Natole and Doran were also busy teaching a number of boaters how to properly tie up to a mooring buoy.

“That’s what we’re here for,” Doran said.

Crew members saw and addressed a man spearfishing within the boundaries of Conch Reef SPA and a group of people illegally hanging out on a platform at Alligator Reef Light. Two snorkelers who were far from their boat were told to attach a diver flag to them so they could be spotted.

On the bayside, crew members checked out a new swim zone, vessel exclusion area 300 feet out from the mean high water line off White Marlin and Port Antigua Beach in Islamorada. During their brief stop, they saw no issues or confrontations.

In total, crew members aboard the auxiliary boat possessed more than 50 years of local experience navigating the Upper Keys waters. It’s why Coast Guard Station Islamorada’s newest commander, Matt James, hopped on board for the day. James previously served at stations in Chicago and Philadelphia before getting the recent call to be the No. 1 in charge at the Islamorada station.

“For a large part, active duty crews here are transients. There’s a few folks who are fortunate to do a couple tours in the Keys or in the same area of responsibility, but we cycle through every two to three years,” he said. “With the auxiliary guys, they can show me the cuts and where to go and not go so I can teach my crews that come after me.”

The Coast Guard station in Islamorada has roughly 30 active members of the Coast Guard. With one crew operating 24/7 and an expansive area to cover, James said it helps to have the ability to multiply the force with the auxiliary patrol during busy weekends like Memorial Day.

Dear Editor, Who will take their bucket list road trip to the iconic Florida Keys when they are driving through swarms of genetically modified mosquitoes (GMMs)? How many travelers may fear getting bitten by a GMM? This largely untested and relatively unknown technology is a big risk to our continued recovery. So if you are not already asking why release this technology, let’s start asking it now.

We all know hurricanes deeply affect us in the Keys and the memories and impacts of Hurricane Irma in 2017 are still felt today. In 2019, Fodors placed the Florida Keys on its “No” list for 2020, advising people not to visit the Keys because of our “sickly coral reefs,” a fragile ecosystem already in need of help. Before our inclusion on that list could affect us, we faced another challenge as the world entered a global pandemic in 2020 and shutdowns cut off our tourism.

Many tourists didn’t travel to the Florida Keys initially, but that has changed. April was a record month for tourism, but we now face a new and self-imposed threat: the recent release of genetically modified mosquitoes.

Why release 500+ million genetically modified mosquitoes into an already fragile ecosystem and a recovering tourism economy? Why release these largely untested, unnecessary and risky experiments when we are finally open and anticipating a robust 2021? Why release them when one bad story or event involving these mosquitoes can go viral and negatively alter the already fragile Florida Keys forever?

We’ve all been hit with enough in the last few years. Let’s not inflict another potential disaster upon ourselves. Let’s ask our elected Mosquito Control Board and our local government assemblies to stop the genetically modified mosquito experiment before it becomes too late. Even those who believe in the technology’s potential, surely can agree to say NO to continuing this experiment when many questions still exist and while the Florida Keys are a top destination to visit.

Let’s not risk the future of the Florida Keys on an unneeded, unproven and untested new technology at this critical time. Let’s wait until we know more about them and their safety in our environment.

Spaseball inventor Dave Soderquist couldn’t resist jumping in and coaching a young player at bat.

here were you on the afternoon of May 24, 2021? In Marathon Community Park, six kids were making history. They were the first children to play a game of softball at a parks and recreation facility in this country using Spaseball, a new lightweight softball and bat — similar to Wiffle Ball, if you will.

Dave Soderquist is the founder of Sweetspot Baseball and the inventor of the patent-holding Spaseball. He stood on the sidelines of the game, giving pep talks to the kids at bat. The teammates were all between the ages of 9 and 11 years old.

Whiff! One child swung and missed the softball by a mile.

“Choke up a little bit on that softball bat,” Soderquist said encouragingly, walking over to coach the young player a bit. “All you have to do is keep your eye on the ball,” he said.

Next pitch: Crack! The ball connected with the bat and flew down the first-base line. The child smiled in triumph.

“See? Now he’s building confidence,” Soderquist said. “If you don’t hit the ball, your confidence goes down and eventually, you give up on the game,” he said, explaining that the light weight of the baseballs, softballs and bat allows kids to crush ’em when they swing, sparking joy in the game.

“We’re a home run nation.

People love home runs,” said Soderquist. “Even in Grandma’s backyard. With Spaseball, you

won’t knock your brother’s tooth out and break windows. But you’ll have a lot of fun.”

Paul Davis, director of Marathon parks and rec, said, “His stuff is revolutionary. It looks like a regular baseball with the lacing and covering. You would never know it’s like a Wiffle Ball or Bat until you pick it up. It’s no longer the old-school big yellow bat. It takes away the fear factor for kids — that’s the biggest thing.”

“I’ve been in the sporting goods business forever,” Soderquist said. “In a previous life, I developed in-line skates.” In fact, Soderquist did so well with producing in-line skates that he sold his company in 2001 after making $100 million in sales. He retired to Layton and worked on an idea that he’d had on his mind for 30 years — a lightweight ball that looked like a normal baseball with the covering and lacings, but weighed 1 ounce versus the usual 5.25 ounces.

Though a Spaseball is similar in concept to the trademarked Wiffle Ball, Soderquist makes an important distinction: a Spaseball is a ball, not a toy.

“When everyone said, ‘You’ve lost your mind,’ I knew I was dead right on,” Soderquist said with glee.

He created all three products from his home in Layton — the lightweight baseball, softball and bat. His inspiration was to get children outside and off the video games, but also to “take away the fear factor,” as Davis said. Many

children, especially girls, Soderquist explained, get scared to hit or catch a regular sized ball.

Also, at $29.99 or $19.99 for a senior- or junior-sized set of a bat and ball, Spaseball is much cheaper than standard softball and baseball equipment, where players also need gloves and cleats. Soderquist wants to make the game as accessible to as many children as possible. And he wanted to honor his hometown of 30 years by introducing Spaseball to the Marathon Parks and Recreational facility first.

Back at the game, Davis’ kids were smiling, with nary a glove in sight. They were able to catch the balls easily as they hurtled toward them.

“This feels very good, I like it.

It goes very far when I hit it,” one child said.

Soderquist has spokespeople lined up to represent Spaseball, including All-American and future Olympian softball player Sierra Romero and L.A. Dodger Walker Buehler. So the future is looking up and up, much like a Spaseball being hit over Grandma’s house.

And Marathon parks and rec was one of the first facilities to play a game with it.

“Months from now, they won’t be saying, ‘I played in a baseball tournament,’” said Soderquist,with a smile and a wink. “They’ll all be saying, ‘I played in a Spaseball tournment.’”

Upper Keys Little League team finishes season as undefeated champions Upper Keys Little League team the Cubs had a “jump-for-joy” moment upon finishing their season 15-0 on May 22 to become champions in their division, which was for ages 6 to 8 with machine pitching.
