ipe breaks over the last week left residents from the Upper Keys south to Big Pine Key with low water pressure or no water at all.

An advisory issued by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority on the morning of May 21 detailed a leak involving a 30-inch transmission line on the Old Highway in Islamorada, near Coral Harbour Club at MM 88. The break occurred around 6 a.m. as water spurted up from the location of the break, inundating a portion of the road in front of the condo club.

FKAA trucks arrived roughly an hour later for repairs on the transmission line, which continued into the morning of May 22.

An alert went out around 6 a.m. on May 22 urging residents to conserve water following the report of a second leak on the transmission line, located at the north end of the weigh station MM 86, that further reduced water storage tanks. FKAA crews completed repairs roughly two-and-a-half hours later around 9 a.m., but noted that restoration of water service to the Keys would take several more hours.

On May 25, FKAA crews were

repairing road shoulder and pavement damage caused by the leak at MM 86.

Major leaks witnessed over the last week, notably the break on Old Highway, were among the few seen since the early 2000s.

“The last time we had similar, critical circumstances was in 2006,” said Julie Cheon, FKAA spokeswoman. “We have some aging pipe in that area and we are expanding our capital improvement plan to include this area.”

FKAA is the water service provider for the Florida Keys, while providing reclaimed water and wastewater services in select areas. About 17 million gallons of drinking water are supplied daily through 1,086 miles of pipe, 26 pumping stations and 45 bridge crossings.

The primary water supply for FKAA is the Biscayne Aquifer. Supplementing it is the Floridan Aquifer, which is a deeper, more brackish aquifer. In emergency situations, the FKAA has the capability of using two seawater plants, one in Marathon and one on Stock Island.

Leak issues weren’t only seen in Islamorada. FKAA issued another water advisory on May 25 at MM 112 in Key Largo, as crews repaired a 4-inch main leak. Repairs took two to three hours.

Residents on Hazel Street, Morris Avenue and Morris Lane experience low water pressure or none at all.

Keys to Peace holding annual free Kindness Giveaway Keys to Peace is holding their annual Kindness Giveaway on Saturday, June 5. The gathering will be at Coral Isles Church, 90001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, MM 90, oceanside. The rain date is June 12.

aily reports detailing new COVID-19 cases in the Keys will no longer be issued by the Monroe County Department of Health. Those wishing to monitor new daily cases can still do so, however, by visiting the state health department’s website.

A report issued May 21 marked the last case count update by the local health department to recipients who signed up to keep track of new infections. Health officials in Monroe County began monitoring new daily cases in the county on March 20, 2020 when the Keys saw its first positive case of COVID-19, in a 72-year-old female resident. The second case came three days later, involving a 54-yearold female resident.

In late March of last year, local health department officials began issuing reports that specified new cases by area. The March 29, 2020 report showed 23 total cases in the Keys, with 13 cases in Key West and four in Key Largo.

Deaths were tracked following the first COVID-related death on April 2 of a 55-year-old male. Not long after that, local health officials added hospitalizations to the daily report.

With cases decreasing in past months, reports went from seven days a week to five — a Monday report detailing cases over the weekend.

A final report prepared by the Monroe County Department of Health on May 21 reported two new cases in Monroe County, with one in Key Largo and another in Marathon. Total cases were just over 7,000. A total of 50 residents, or 1% of all cases, have died from COVID-19. Of those, 76% were residents 65 years and older.

COVID-related hospitalizations in Monroe County total 274 since the pandemic began. That’s 4% of all cases in the county.

New daily cases between May 14 and May 21 averaged around four. In a statement, the local health department acknowledged relatively low case numbers in the county — a positive rate of less than 3%. As of a May 24 report, 41,700 county residents were vaccinated.

Residents can still monitor daily new cases in Monroe County by visiting flhealthcovid19.gov. The Florida Department of Health’s website offers a variety of reports, from vaccine counts to long-term care facilities with positive COVID-19 cases.

With local daily reports ending, the Monroe County Department of Health said it has also returned to in-person operations and services.

“This is a huge step in the right direction,” the health department said.

Testing is ongoing in Monroe County through Curative, urgent cares and doctors’ offices, and vaccinations are available at pharmacies up and down the Keys. Bob Eadie, top health officer in Monroe County, said residents receiving the one-shot Johnson & Johnson or two-shot Moderna or Pfizer vaccines are “pretty good to resume normal life.” He said, however, that it’s still recommended to wear facial coverings on buses and airplanes.

“The health department is still wearing masks and we require people seeking services to wear masks,” he told Islamorada council members during a May 23 meeting. “That’s to protect those not vaccinated yet whose immune systems could be compromised.”

Eadie said those who aren’t vaccinated should continue to wear a mask, social distance and avoid crowds.

History of Diving Museum celebrates military The History of Diving Museum is celebrating members of the military, past and present, through special programming and visiting opportunities.

Since opening in 2005, the History of Diving Museum’s founders, Joe and Sally Bauer, instituted a program to extend free admission to active duty military service members. The museum’s military outreach expanded when they joined the Blue Star Museums program at its inception in 2010.

Thanks to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Blue Star Families and the Defense Department, over 2,000 museums participate annually with a goal to help service members and their families enjoy the nation’s national heritage and learn more about their communities.

During the Blue Star Museums summer program, active military and up to five of their immediate family members receive free entry to select museums all around the country from Armed Forces Day in May to Labor Day in September. Even if the active member is deployed, spouses and dependents can participate simply by showing a proper ID card. Over 2,600 individuals have benefited from these programs by visiting the History of Diving Museum alone.

The History of Diving Museum displays the rich history of “the quest to explore under the sea”, including the South Florida connection to this untold story. Exhibits highlight all branches of the military as well as male and female diving pioneers.

The second year of additional sponsorship is by museum member and long-time supporter, Liz Bonness.

She has family ties to the military, including her daughter who is currently serving. She believes in providing the opportunity for local military families, as well as those traveling to the Keys, to have fun and enjoy the museum.

Monroe County warns against illegal dumping It is illegal and can be a felony to dump household appliances, construction materials, boats, trailers, RVs, and vegetative debris on county-owned vacant land and county rights-of-way and streets.

When someone illegally dumps, it is Monroe County taxpayers who pay the extra disposal cost. The county is working on curtailing dumping at hotspots by adding surveillance to the areas. If you see illegal dumping in action, call 911 for someone actively dumping on vacant land or rights-ofway.

“The illegally dumped debris affects our quality of life, wildlife, and marine habitats,” said Cheryl Sullivan, Monroe County director of solid waste.

“It is a growing issue, and we need to discourage and report this type of behavior, especially if it is being seen in progress.”

Keys getting more phone scams The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is receiving reports of people receiving phone scams from criminals claiming to be in law enforcement and urging people to pay with gift cards over some fake warrant or missing some fake court date.

The criminals use real law enforcement phone numbers and often will use real local law enforcement officers’ names during the scams. Some residents have previously reported getting calls from someone posing as Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

If you receive a call from a law enforcement agency/utility company/government agency or popular business such as Amazon, hang up and contact the agency for verification.

Never pay anything over the phone with gift cards. This is a sign you are getting scammed.

All residents should be wary of any unknown third party caller requesting money over the phone.

rom 12 candidates, the list of finalists for Islamorada’s next manager dwindled to five during a May 19 special meeting of the village council. It then was cut to four after one candidate withdrew his name late last week.

Inside the Founders Park Community Center, council members read aloud their top five choices to hiring consultant Colin Baenziger, who attended via Zoom. Interviews will start early next month.

In the end, candidates Andrea Agha, Guillermo Olmedillo, Gregory Oravec, Terry Suggs and David Baird were selected as finalists. Baird, district coordinator for the Sussex Conservation District in Georgetown, Delaware, withdrew his name from consideration on May 21.

Agha is the current village manager for Key Biscayne, the barrier island of about 13,000 residents located a little more than 80 miles from Islamorada. For the past three years, she’s led a team of 200 employees with a $34-million-plus annual budget.

Olmedillo served as manager of Surfside in Miami-Dade County for five years before taking an expert land use and development position last August.

t a recent workshop, the county commissioners had a real conundrum on their hands. Polls say that residents want to slow development in the Florida Keys, and yet they also need more affordable workforce housing.

So what should the county do?

Commissioner David Rice proposed an out-ofthe-box solution: a more robust public transportation system.

The May 25 strategic planning workshop was coordinated by Kimberly Matthews, Monroe County’s senior director of strategic planning. Matthews was giving the commissioners the results from a round of recent online town halls asking residents, among other queries, an essential question: “What are the county’s greatest challenges?”

Locals answered that the county’s top four challenges are: traffic and road safety on U.S. 1, growth control/overdevelopment, water quality and affordable workforce housing.

Oravec enters his sixth year as mayor for the city of Port St. Lucie, while Suggs approaches his fourth year as Putnam County administrator.

Council members had the option to select an alternate candidate in the event a finalist backed out before the interviews. Baenziger told the dais that an alternate would get an invitation for an interview should someone drop out.

“You might argue having (David) Ritz as backup because he’s a local, and you just have to call him up and say, ‘Hey, can you be there?’ Where someone else might have to make flight arrangements.”

The dais decided against picking another finalist during the special meeting. Council members haven’t picked an alternate with Baird backing out late last week. Mayor Buddy Pinder told the Weekly on May 25 that the council intends to interview the four remaining finalists.

“I think all four candidates are very strong,” Pinder said. “I think we had a very good pick.”

Councilman David Webb said ‘no’ to bringing in another candidate.

Due to these pandemic times, the town halls were held virtually, but back around 2019, a much more comprehensive survey was conducted.

“How we turn the concerns of the public into solutions — that is what strategic planning is all about,” said Matthews. Strategic priorities plus resource allocation equals action. With a strategic plan, local governments make priorities for their fiscal years, then implement the plan in the budgets and in staff directives.

Matthews said the 2019 survey, which helped form the strategy for Monroe County’s fiscal years 2020 to 2025, was a “huge community process where we talked to 3000 people” during 13 in-person town halls for residents, surveys, staff meetings and talks with stakeholders.

At that time, to the question, “What are the county’s greatest challenges,” the top four answers were the same, though in a different order: affordable workforce housing, growth control/overdevelopment, traffic and road safety on U.S. 1 and water quality.

The recent series of online surveys, Matthews said, “was to reaffirm and review our strategic priorities.”

Commissioner Craig Cates said he wasn’t concerned about the moving over the past couple of years of the residents’ concerns in the rankings, which he attributed to COVID. “But I’m glad to see it’s all the same (concerns),” he said. “That just means we’ve got work to do.”

Webb said he has specific priorities he’s seeking in the next village manager that include major infrastructure programs and engaging with the community. He said he hopes the council is unanimous when picking the next manager.

“That may not be possible but that will certainly be my goal,” he said.

A nationwide search for Islamorada’s next manager comes following the resignation of Seth Lawless last summer due to health reasons. Maria Bassett, current finance director, took the helm on an interim basis. Initial recruitment of candidates saw just over 80 applying for the position.

Interviews and selection of the next village manager is set for Wednesday, June 2. Each council member will have the chance to interview finalists one-on-one in the morning. A special village meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. inside the community center where the dais will conduct further interviews. Baenziger will guide the council through the process.

Mayor Michelle Coldiron agreed. “This is what we hear when we’re out in the community every single day, all four of these issues.”

“I share with Commissioner Cates the feeling that if one slips from 2 to 3, that’s really not significant,” said Commissioner David Rice. “What’s significant is the overall picture doesn’t change.”

Since this meeting was a workshop, with no actions to be taken, all five commissioners spoke freely about possible solutions to these issues, especially affordable housing.

“We know we can't build enough affordable housing,” said Rice. “We don't even have enough locations to build enough affordable housing. But I think in the future it will become vitally important for us to set more of a priority to set up a much more robust transportation system.”

Cates supported Rice’s view. “Like what (Matthews) said, it's diametrically opposed: growth and building affordable housing. We need to look at answers like what you have because we can't build our way out of this.”

Rice advocated action and said he will bring an agenda item to be voted on at the June BOCC meeting “for the transportation issues we discussed.”

The commissioners also discussed other Monroe County challenges for Matthews to keep track of in the strategic plan: building a skilled workforce, educating the public about residential floodproofing, beautifying the U.S. 1 corridor, prioritizing parks and recreation, taking inventory of the county’s mental health resources in a post-COVID world, and broadening access to water for recreation and the economy.

arge-scale events within Islamorada can enter planning and scheduling stages, Monroe County’s top health officer told the Islamorada Village Council during a May 20 hybrid meeting.

A freeze on temporary use permits for events took effect last August, when the former council voted to cancel events through October as a COVID-19 protection measure. Following election victories, a completely new council extended that event prohibition through April 1, and again, during a Feb. 25 meeting, through June as spring break loomed. Actions by both councils came following recommendations from Bob Eadie, health officer with the Florida Health Department.

On May 20, Eadie again joined the dais via Zoom to provide the council with an update and the recommendation that the village could resume events such as the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market next year.

“They can not only be planned but scheduled and conducted as they have in the past,” he said. “There’s still cases being transmitted every day. We may need to adjust what we do, but right now, I think we can start to move into the post-COVID period of our lives.”

Council members verbally agreed to let the special use permit prohibition sunset at the end of May. Daily cases in the village have averaged in the single digits for a while. COVID-19 cases in Islamorada are around 260 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Village council members moved into a list of agenda items that included a proposed amendment to an agreement between the village and its solid waste collection provider. The village contracted with Advanced Disposal in 2013 for residential and commercial solid waste, yard waste and recycling collection and disposal services.

Since then, two amendments were made to the agreement to reflect pricing for commercial equipment that compacts small containers, as well as increased disposal costs.

A third amendment to the agreement with Advanced Disposal, acquired by Waste Management last October, came before the dais requesting a 7% rate hike in commercial rates to compensate for increased customer service costs. It also adjusts the start of commercial services to 5 a.m., which is due to an increase in traffic and difficulties for trucks to bring collections to the transfer stations by closing.

Council members David Webb and Mark Gregg expressed their confusion over which company the village would be dealing with going forward, as language within the contract named Advanced Disposal. But Waste Management officials joined the meeting to discuss service and contract details.

It was later learned that Advanced Disposal is a wholly owned subsidiary of Waste Management. Village Attorney Roget Bryan affirmed the information to the council and noted that the acquisition of Advanced Disposal by Waste Management was complicated — taking roughly 18 months and going through federal regulatory hurdles.

“For village purposes, we still have a contract with Advanced Disposal, a wholly owned subsidiary now of Waste Management and being operated as such,” he said.

Greg Sullivan, local manager for Waste Management, told the dais the company is working to change logos on trucks nationwide.

“There’s no underlying reason not to change them,” he said. “It’s just the simple fact of time and getting people to do it.

“We are acting under the same contractual obligation and we take all solid waste and recycling to the Monroe County Transfer Station, the same as Advanced Disposal had been doing for the last two years,” he continued.

Gregg was critical of the proposed 7% increase in commercial customer services in Islamorada and asked Sullivan what the advantage was in going along with such a raise.

“I don’t think Waste Management will go out of business if they don't get a raise, but I do know a lot of merchants in Islamorada who aren’t going to appreciate the rate increase after the pandemic,” Gregg said.

Sullivan attributed the hike to the cost of business in the Keys, rising prices on tires, steel and fuel and paying employees a living wage.

“We’re in the same boat everyone else is in to keep employees,” he said.

“The garbage business is not one of the most glamorous jobs. We have people who get to the trucks to start at 5 a.m. to pick up trash.”

Webb relayed criticism over company workers removing items within the containers and throwing it on the road in front of residences because it wasn’t in the appropriate container.

Calling it “unacceptable,” Webb said workers should be able to look inside the can and slap a red tag if there are items that don’t belong.

“Then the resident can work it out how it’s going to be picked up,” he said.

Sullivan said the issue was addressed immediately and shouldn’t happen again.

The proposed amendment to the agreement was tabled for further clarification and discussion. Islamorada Village Council’s next regularly scheduled meeting is set for Thursday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m. Residents can attend in person, watch via Zoom or view on channel 77.

THE OVERSEAS HIGHWAY 3.0

ecessity inspired the first version of the Overseas Highway. It opened in 1928.

The Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane forced a reimagining of the second version of the highway. It reopened in 1938. The third incarnation, the Overseas Highway 3.0, was influenced by World War II and the U.S. Navy. The newly improved route opened to the public in 1944.

As World War II intensified, two things became apparent. First, the Navy needed access to an additional freshwater source, a pipeline that connected the mainland to Key West.

The project was shared by the State of Florida and the Navy. The Navy footed two-thirds of the bill. When it was completed, the 18-inch pipeline from the mainland to Key West followed the right-of-way of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. (Fun fact: it takes anywhere from 10 days to two weeks for a drop of water to travel from the mainland to Key West.)

The Navy also needed to transport heavy equipment to its base at Key West. The current version of the highway was unable to handle the load. The road had some tight turns that were fine for cars and trucks and even Greyhound buses but were a little too tight to accommodate the Navy’s equipment. Also, some of the wooden bridges connecting the islands could not bear the extra weight of the military loads.

To ensure the wooden-trestle bridges were structurally sound, the Navy upgraded them. Also, the path was redirected to follow the right-ofway established by Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. This improvement shortened

and straightened the highway. Up to this point in the highway’s history, it entered Key Largo via what is today called Card Sound Road and the Card Sound Bridge. When version 3.0 of the Overseas Highway opened to traffic, 17 miles of the highway had been eliminated. The 18-Mile Stretch was incorporated into the highway, a route that cut 14 miles off the road to Key West. The new and improved highway also bypassed the coastal route along Sugarloaf Key, shaving off another three miles from the highway.

Florida Governor Spessard Holland was among a cavalcade of participants in an automobile caravan that, on May 16, 1944, departed Key West at 10 a.m. and arrived at Florida City at 3:30 p.m.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held nearly two months later, on July 2, 1944, atop the scenic Bahia Honda Bridge. The Overseas Highway, at this point, also became part of U.S. 1 and linked Key West not just to the mainland but to Fort Kent, Maine.

In 1944, the Overseas Highway was still operating as a toll road. When the second version of the highway opened in 1938, two toll booths occupied small sections of the road. One was located at Lower Matecumbe Key; the other, on Big Pine. At $1 for the driver and a quarter for every passenger, the price was not cheap. The cost, in terms of 2021 dollars, would be in the neighborhood of $18.

When tolls were collected, they were brought to the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge District headquarters at Pigeon Key. On Pigeon Key, however, shenanigans were afoot. Though created to repay a $3.6 million federal loan used in highway improvements completed in 1938, toll monies were being used to lavish district headquarters with expensive food and drink. In addition to a host of other fraudulent schemes uncovered by investigative reporters at the Miami Daily News, a $60,000 swimming pool was built at Pigeon Key. Additionally, the district manager was provided with a luxury cabin cruiser for fishing and other entertainment purposes.

In 1954, the Overseas Road and Toll Bridge District closed. On April 15, 1954, all tolls were lifted, and the booths were picked up and hauled away. Signs popped along the side of the road that declared the highway was now the “Florida Freeway.” The Florida Keys communities protested this “renaming” of their road. Their voices were heard, the signs were removed, and the road once again became known as the Overseas Highway.

The road would continue to see improvements. In 1969, the 65-foot high Card Sound Bridge was constructed. 1972 would see the completion of the modern Bahia Honda Bridge. The new Seven Mile Bridge opened in 1982.

The Overseas Highway, by the way, begins or ends, depending on your perspective, at the Monroe County line near Mile Marker 112. Once the road crosses into Dade County, it becomes the Dixie Highway.

n Sunday, June 6, Key Dives will host its annual Wetsuit Wrangle, turning old wetsuits into new yoga mats.

Think of it like spring cleaning: Keys edition.

“It is common, especially in the sport of diving, for a diver to own multiple wetsuits or even to go through wetsuits every few years,” said Cortney Benson, Key Dives’ operations manager and marine conservation coordinator. “Dive shops will also go through wetsuits much quicker with high demand in the winter and spring seasons.”

This wouldn’t be as big of a problem if the neoprene that wetsuits are made of was easy to recycle, but it isn’t.

“Because of this, when discarded, wetsuits will typically end up in landfills,” Benson said.

She started the Wetsuit Wrangle a few years ago with a goal to round up all the used and soon-to-be discarded wetsuits and put them to a new use.

Once collected, the wetsuits are sent to LavaRubber, a small business that Key Dives partners with that repurposes the would-be trash into everything from yoga mats to coasters to floor mats and more.

In a popular diving destination like the Keys, it’s important to give customers and the community an option for how to properly get rid of their old wetsuits, Benson said.

“As one of the more conservation-oriented dive shops in the Upper Keys, we are stoked to give shops and customers a very easy way to contribute to local conservation,” she said. “It’s very difficult to recycle or repurpose much of the gear involved in scuba diving … so, where we can repurpose a piece of gear rather than send it to the dump, we are all for it.”

The wrangle’s all-time record number of suits collected is 206.

Before the event started, they’d already collected around 80 suits from locals and other dive shops. Benson will be driving around to other dive businesses the week of the event to collect their old suits.

If you have an old suit (or two or three) you’d like to contribute, bring them to Florida Keys Brewing Co. in Islamorada on Sunday, June 6 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Corals weather the storm just like everything else. When conditions calm down, we will go out to monitor planting sites and reattach any planted corals that came loose. This way, the importance of the reef travels much further than the village.

ome seniors rode in vehicles dressed in green and gold colors. Others perched themselves on the back of classic cars or on the passenger side as they waved to parade goers. Coral Shores Class of 2021 graduates blared music and celebrated with family and friends as they paraded the Old Highway in Islamorada on May 21. The parade, part of a final goodbye to their high school careers, was organized by the parents of the graduating class.

IN-PERSON MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES SET IN ISLAMORADA

he Matecumbe Historical Trust will hold its annual Memorial Day service at the Islamorada Hurricane Monument, located at MM 81.5 on Monday, May 31, at 9 a.m.

The program will include a presentation by pastor emeritus Tony Hammon, the invocation, presentation of colors, the national anthem, guest speaker Mayor Buddy Pinder, guest speaker Bob Johnson from the American Legion, the placing of

a memorial wreath, taps, a presentation by Henry Rosenthal and the benediction.

The ceremony will honor the memory of those who lost their lives serving in the military for the United States. Attendees are asked to follow social distancing guidelines, including 6-foot spacing, and may wish to bring an umbrella to provide shade.

OBITUARY

RON COLE, 1944-2021 Capt. Ron Cole was born in Miami on April 17, 1944.

He loved the outdoors and lived a lifetime full of travel and adventures.

He was 77 years young. Cole passed peacefully into the great beyond at his beloved home, Peaceable Plantation, on Plantation Key, Islamorada.

He is survived by his two sons, Ryan and Travis Cole, of Colorado; his loving wife Marilyn Rogers (Conch Republic); stepdaughter Carly Gripper, of Virginia; and brothers Gary and Derek Cole, of Florida.

Ron was well known for his passion for the Great Seal of the United States and the founding of our country. He frequented many community celebrations with his displays on the Great Seal and reenactments of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He had displays at both national political conventions and repeatedly at the annual Constitution Week in Grand Lake, Co. He started flying early in life and was a U.S. Navy aviator of

the F8 Crusader, stationed at NAS Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, where he trained other Navy pilots in the art of flying.

After his service, he followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming an Eastern Airlines pilot.

United Airlines was his next stop.

He ended his career as an instructor at the United Airlines Denver Training Center. Along the way he earned a degree in political science at Florida International University. His advocacy was proven early as he became an ALPA union activist and chief spokesperson in the 1989 ALPA strike action against Eastern Airlines.

He continued to be a voice for union and human rights throughout his life. He was a founding member of Keys To Peace, a local community building non-profit. He was active in the Garden Club of the Upper Keys as ever supportive spouse and helper. He served several roles at the American Legion Post 333 in Key Largo. He was actively engaged in politics.

A private celebration of life and spreading of his ashes will be held in the future. Love letters and tributes can be sent to Allen-Beyer Funeral Home.

REMEMBERING THE FALLEN To the editor: The horror and absolute brutality endured by members of our armed forces on battlefields over the course of our nation's history causes one to shudder.

Acknowledging the wounds endured by those combatants does not require approval or agreement with the cause behind their actions. We know instances throughout history where, if these warriors chose not to effectively engage the enemy and set aside their oaths of allegiance to God and Country, our homeland would be under despotic rule. They didn't give in to their fears nor seek to malinger and escape their duties. They chose to face the dangerous fates that awaited them.

Protesting and the right to air one's grievances are the bedrock upon which our nation was founded. However, disabled soldiers at airports or the caskets containing our returning war dead seems to be a bit over the top.

In many of our institutions, patriotism and love for one's country have become passé, seeming to have been replaced by an attitude and ideology which all too often reframe and exclusively focus on America's imperfections, transgressions and errors in judgment.

Ironically, the very same people hell-bent on making these negative declarations are imperfect themselves. They're riddled with their own brand of flaws, errors and misjudgments. Something like the "pot calling the kettle black." Or, "cast out first the beam from thine own eye." Hypocrites are unattractive.

Things can begin to change this year. We'll have an opportunity to gather together and honor the sacrifices made by those members of our armed forces killed in action.

Please join the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10211, in partnership with our county's administrator, Roman Gastesi; Veterans Affairs Director Cathy Crane; and State Attorney/VFW Commander Dennis Ward for a Memorial Day ceremony inside the Murray Nelson Government Center auditorium. POWER OF THE PINEAPPLE How to understand and appreciate time

D

o you ever get impatient and wish to speed up time?

It can kind of suck when you are working so hard for something, and then it feels like it takes forever. Or you are waiting on something, and you start to lose faith or hope that it will actualize.

I have been there. Too many times to count. If someone were to ask me, “Melinda, what’s your biggest struggle?” I would answer, “Time.”

I remember when I noticed my first pineapple upon moving to the Keys. I was house-sitting for a couple who traveled a lot and noticed that they were growing a pineapple in the backyard. I wasn’t aware that you could grow a pineapple here, and I was fascinated.

I knew that pineapples took a dang long time to grow — sometimes as long as 24 months. I checked on the pineapple every time I stopped by their house. Sometimes, I drove by to check on it as an extra stop and didn’t go inside the house.

One time, I remember finding one of those big ugly-teeth coconut rats dead by the pineapple, and I freaked out. I wanted to make sure it was safe.

Weird, right? That rat was ugly! Have you ever seen those? Yuck!

When the pineapple was ripe, the homeowners were still out of town.

They told me I could take it home and eat it. To be honest, I wasn’t into harvesting and eating it. I had a little anxiety.

Why? Because then this lovely pineapple was gone. The growth was over, and pineapples only bear fruit once. Its journey would be over.

Complete. The joy was in watching this pineapple grow, nurturing it and making sure it was safe.

So here I am, protecting the growth of this pineapple. I tended to it. I watched over it. I appreciated its growth over time. Trepidatious to harvest it.

But, I treat my growth as a giant race and rush to get to the finish line. I have been known to be anxious to get to the next step. I have often let my brain overturn my intuition. I was not taking time to decide as if the world is not abundant and it will be there tomorrow. Can you relate?

Why do we do that to ourselves?

Is it how we are wired from childhood?

Societal pressures to live up to some standard? Pressure from social media?

Why? I have done a lot of work and learned not to focus on time. Also, not to let other people and their goalsetting memes, quotes, podcasts and videos consume my thoughts. If it feels good, then that’s cool. If not, the work was to let it go. And yes, it’s work — every day.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. The pressure we put on ourselves falls into this bucket. Mental health awareness covers many aspects and should be recognized daily, not just in May, but I will take this platform now. Understanding that things take time and giving ourselves the grace to be patient on this journey is essential for our mental state.

So, if you can relate and this is something you struggle with, know you are not alone and give yourself grace.

It will all work out!

FRY RETIRES, KEY LARGO PRINCIPAL NEXT TO TAKE HELM AT CORAL SHORES

wo of the Florida Keys’ three public high schools will have a new principal in the fall.

Current Key Largo School Principal Laura Lietaert was recently promoted to principal of Coral Shores High School with Blake Fry retiring. And Chistina McPherson is leaving Key West High School for an administrative job.

Superintendent Theresa Axford made the announcement earlier in the week, as Lietart will take over as principal of a high school she graduated from.

Lietaert grew up in the Upper Keys.

“The foundations provided to me by the teachers at Key Largo School, Plantation Key School and Coral Shores set me up for success,” Lietaert said.

“This is my opportunity to give back to a school and community that has given me so much. I’m proud to be a Hurricane once again.”

Lietaert will take over for retiring principal Blake Fry when the new school year begins.

“We are thrilled to have Ms. Lietaert lead Coral Shores High School,” Axford said. “Her years of innovative leadership and dedication will continue to propel them. I appreciate Laura’s work in building relationships at Key Largo School and I know she will use these same skills to support Coral Shores High.”

Lietaert’s many assets include her approachability, Axford said, noting she welcomes input from students, parents and the community members who are part of the school system where her four children attended. Her daughter, Stephanie, is a teacher at Plantation Key School. Sons Robert, John and Bernie are serving in the U. S. Coast Guard.

No word yet on her replacement as principal of Key Largo School.

Fry served as Coral Shores principal for 10 years. He told the Keys Weekly that his wife, Mary Jo, and he decided it was time to retire and enjoy family time.

“We have always planned to spend half the year in Michigan, then when the snow flies return

to Key Largo,” he said. “Right now the time just seems right,” noting their daughters “both relocated to southern Michigan and just finished graduate school and are planning their futures in Michigan. “ Fry said his time teaching, coaching and working with “outstanding educaCoral Shores graduate tors at every level Laura Lietaert, who is curhas been a dream rently serving as principal at the K-8 Key Largo School, come true.”

At the other end of the island chain, Chistina McPherson is leaving Key West High School for an administrative job as the school district’s executive director of teaching & learning. McPherson’s replacement at KWHS has not been named.

“The KWHS position will be advertised and will be selected in the coming weeks,” school district spokeswoman Amber Acevedo told the Keys Weekly. “I know change always causes speculation, but all are committed to a smooth transition.”

McPherson is no stranger to district administration, having served as MCSD’s director of assessment and accountability from 2011-2014.

’CANES JUNIOR CHAMPION IN GRECO-ROMAN, FREESTYLE WRESTLING

C

oral Shores junior Vincent Biondoletti recently captured the Florida USA Junior Freestyle and the Florida USA Greco-Roman state championships.

With the wins, Biondoletti advanced to the Southeastern Regionals (nine states) recently in Jacksonville.

The championships also guarantee him an opportunity to represent Florida in the National Tournament, which will be held in July in Fargo, North Dakota.

Additionally, Biondoletti has qualified for the Florida National Team Duels, which will take place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in June.

“It’s going to be a busy summer; looks like I’m going to be traveling a lot,” Biondoletti said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity. I had hoped to be doing the same thing last year but everything got put on hold with COVID. Winning a national championship has been my dream since I started wrestling at 7 years old.”

“Vince has been training real hard; he’s been traveling to Homestead several times each week,” said Joe Biondoletti, his father and head coach. “He’s been working out with the Gladiators, which is the South Dade High School wrestling club. That group is pretty amazing. Keep in mind that South Dade High School has won 20 consecutive state championships in FHSAA wrestling.”

The younger Biondoletti is continuing the family wrestling legacy. Joe Biondoletti was a FHSAA state champion at 118 pounds in 1986 before accepting a scholarship to wrestle at Purdue University.
