County and state officials and business owners created a group to brainstorm how to have a smoother lobster season

I

f you ever want a conversation to get heated on a community Facebook page, lob out this question: “Hey, do you think we should have lobster mini-season?” Then buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Keys Weekly did a search on “lobster mini-season” on a local Facebook page, and we saw a post that said, “I just want to remind people that mini-lobster season is not for taking small lobster.”

Commenters responded, “I wish they would do away with mini-lobster season,” and “We never go out for mini stupid season. I hide. Too many amateurs on the water with no regard to safety.”

Also: “I say close mini-season down so the local fishermen actually have a chance this year.”

Due to the event’s consistent controversy, Monroe County Mayor and Commissioner Michelle Coldiron and Marathon City Councilman John Bartus spearheaded a lobster mini-season task

force via Zoom on March 8. The discussion was about making rules and regulations more uniform countywide and therefore mitigating the impact of the event.

On April 21, Coldiron was scheduled to present the task force’s findings to the Board of County Commissioners. (However, as of press time, she had not been able to present and discuss the topic during a packed meeting.)

“This update is because we are trying to see what we can do to make lobster mini-season safer for the environment and the residents,” Coldiron told Keys Weekly. “It is in no way for us to cancel it.

During COVID, it all came to a head, with many wanting to cancel the lobster miniseason. And we couldn’t. It’s controlled by FWC.” Canceling mini-season is not an option, so, Coldiron said, the March 8 task force came up with several long- and short-term solutions to make the annual event go more smoothly. continued on page 7

Coldiron said the biggest complaints about mini-season from her residents are the crowds and the garbage on the side of the roads and in nearshore waters. Some short-term solutions to address this: portable restrooms, garbage receptacles and help from transportation officials to manage the activities and number of visitors who pull off on the side of Overseas Highway or crowd boat ramps.

Bartus was impressed with TDC’s Andy Newman and Julie Botteri’s idea to have an English-language and a Spanishlanguage campaign on television and the internet to remind tourists of mini-season rules that locals know but they may not: “6 lobsters per day is your limit” or “If you get caught with too many lobsters, you go to jail.”

Coldiron and Bartus said longer-term goals include asking FDOT to put dynamic signs on the side of the road with similar messages about rules and working with the FWC to create a tag system for the six lobsters that are allowed per person.

Another potential idea: unifying the rules through the county. At present, different rules exist in different municipalities on when/where swimmers are allowed to snorkel within the residential shorelines, and the volunteer law enforcement who help during mini-season may not be familiar with the different rules.

And the Facebook comment mentioned above, “I say close mini-season down so the local fisherman actually have a chance this year,” implies that residents are worried that the lobster taken during the mini-season depletes the population and ruins the catch for commercial fisherman.

Coldiron asked experts including John Hunt, FWC program administrator, if mini-season affects the spiny lobster population for commercial fishermen. “The scientists said it is not negatively impacting the real season,” she said.

So why is the FWC so adamant about mini-season anyway?

Per a 1992 sun-sentinel.com article: “The mini-season began about 10 years ago to give sport divers a chance to catch lobster before commercial fishermen deploy their lobster traps.”

“There have been so many problems in the past prior to mini-season,” FWC Captain David Dipre said. “The state said there’s a ‘user conflict.’ (The fishermen) put their private property in front of everybody, and that property is vandalized. So the state said, ‘Give the recreational guys a shot, and give six per person per day.’ Then in that way, you won’t have user conflict.

I don’t want the commercial fishermen to see that and feel that they have to take action on that. Let’s keep the recreational season separate from the commercial season.”

VALHALLA: UPSCALE RESORT DETAILS UNVEILED MOST ACCOMMODATIONS WILL BE STAND-ALONE COTTAGES OR HOUSES

I

t was a “no,” but not a “hard no.”

On April 19, Marathon’s Planning Board voted down a hotel project proposed for Crawl Key between Marathon and Grassy Key. For the board, it was a first look at a very detailed, very upscale project called Valhalla Resort, put forward by Johnny Morris Signature Resorts. Morris is the founder of Bass Pro Shops, which also owns Cabela’s sporting stores.

Although the board voted 4-1 to deny the project (see opposite page), some of the board members were nevertheless impressed with the project.

“It’s a magnificent project,” said Planning Board member Mike Leonard. “I love this project, it’s like putting Palm Island Resort at Valhalla.”

Planning Board member Matt Sexton agreed. “It’s a stunning project,” said Sexton.

The development has been in the works for more than 15 years. Property records show that Floridian Holdings LLC bought up most of the properties where the resort is planned in 2005. At the time, there were a handful of houses accessible by Banana Boulevard off Overseas Highway. Now only one of those parcels is privately owned by someone else. Those homeowners spoke in favor of the project on April 19, with the provision that they would be able to access their property conveniently.

The proposed layout of Valhalla Resort has operations clustered near U.S.1 — the check-in desk as well as housing for services like laundry and delivery. That is also where guests would park vehicles — the rest of the resort would be traversed by golf carts and pedestrians. Currently, that land is designated as a conservation area and is the main concern of the planning board (see opposite page).

Most of the resort would be clustered on the acreage closest to the ocean on land that is already properly zoned. That includes the former Valhalla motel on the tip of Ocean Drive, and Valhalla Island — the two areas are bisected by a canal.

In all, developers are proposing to build a 110-unit resort. Of those, 29 are standard hotel rooms in the proposed lodge, and the rest are split among 50 villas, cottages and homes. The resort has eight different standalone unit configurations ranging from studios with 379 square feet of interior space to two-story homes with four bedrooms and four baths of 3,700 square feet. All of the models have at least one porch and most have an outside shower, while most have both aft and forward decks, making the unit’s footprint roughly twice as large. The different models are scattered throughout the resort, so as not to have clusters of large homes stacked together, but a range of options side by side.

The design was presented by Nunzio Marc Desantis Architects of Dallas, Texas.

(There is no apparent relationship between the architectural firm and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.)

The resort plans call for a 12,000-squarefoot spa that includes retail space, a hair salon, jacuzzi, steam rooms, saunas and “cold pools.” There is also a women’s locker room and men’s lounge. The one-story building is a courtyard design, with a long pool in the center.

The proposed lodge is three stories tall with 29 rooms. It’s a 30,000-square-foot space, which also includes a 1,000-squarefoot service yard.

In addition, there’s a plan for a fitness building to occupy 3,400 square feet with space for free weights and cardio. The developer has made room for 163 parking spaces, which are required by the city.

The proposed resort buildings meet

the height requirements in the Florida Keys Area of Critical Concern, except the lodge. As designed, it measures 54 feet tall, although the added height only encompasses architectural design features and can be waived by the order of the city manager.

As with any new development in the City of Marathon, the resort must provide workforce housing that equals 20 percent of the square footage devoted to hotel rooms and cottages. The developer has more than 8,000 square feet of workforce housing that must be increased by more than 5,000 square feet to meet the city requirements.

In the middle swath of acreage (60 acres, total), the wetland would be left largely alone, although the developer proposes to build some raised boardwalks.

The resort appears to have most of the transient rental unit (hotel room) building rights, but not all. Neither approval by the planning board nor the Marathon City Council guarantees those rights and the developer must buy them on the open market.

Johnny Morris founded Bass Pro in 1971 in Springfield, Missouri. Currently, the company’s holdings include Bass Pro Shops and its flagship shop known as Outdoor World.

In 2017, Bass Pro bought Cabela’s, another outdoor retailer, for $5.5 billion. Forbes estimates Morris’ net worth at about $4.1 billion.

There are about 170 retail shops — including Bass Pro shops and Cabela’s — in the U.S. and Canada.

Bass Pro’s holdings also include two resorts and a nature preservation area, also in Missouri. Big Cedar Lodge and the Lodge at Top of the Rock were built within the past decade. Bass Pro Shops also owns White River Marine Group, which manufactures and distributes boats under nine brand names, including Mako, which is popular in Florida.

Bass Pro also owns the Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, where guests pay admission to enjoy daily adventures.

arathon’s Planning Board voted 4-1 to deny Valhalla Resort, put forward by Johnny Morris Signature Resorts, to be developed on Crawl Key, or the Grassy Key stretch as it’s known to locals. The site is located just east of Curry Hammock State Park. The board considered zoning and flood map changes, the conditional use and development agreement, and abandoning the plat including roads.

Only Chairman Lynn Landry voted in favor of the project.

“I think this is a good project for that area,” he said. “I know Johnny Morris bought that property a long time ago.

And I don’t think Johnny Morris or Bass Pro have ever done a development that wasn’t good quality. They have a reputation of protecting and preserving for future generations.”

The City of Marathon’s Planning Board only makes recommendations. The final authority rests with the Marathon City Council who will vote on this project in the near future.

The other four members of the planning board — Mike Leonard, Matt Sexton, Susan Klock and Mike Cinque — had concerns, however. Most cited the conservation zoning for the property fronting U.S.1 where the resort intends to put the check-in desk, guest parking and other services buildings.

Marathon City Staff recommended the zoning be changed from conservation to mixed use on both the zoning and Future Land Use Map (FLUM) maps for only the front portion of the project near U.S.1. The city staff noted that the conservation area had been “disturbed,” meaning it has previously been cleared and/or filled. Most likely the disturbance has to do with its proximity to Overseas Highway and Banana Boulevard. The rest of the property — where the villas and lodge will go — is already properly zoned.

“Changing the zoning will set a dangerous precedent for any other landowner who has massive acreage that can’t legally be developed right now,” said Sexton. Sexton said he realizes the optics of the situation because he is currently redeveloping a hotel further up the road at Grassy Flats Resort. “We have so much disheveled, abandoned, previously

developed land — and that is exactly what I am on.” Sexton said the plan to maximize use of every part of the property is not conservation, but “greenwashing” — an attempt to disguise development as environmentally responsible.

Cinque also cited the zoning change but said he is also concerned about the impacts to Marathon when it comes to workforce housing, employee recruitment and accessibility.

“You are asking the citizens of Marathon to make a sacrifice to give up the conservation land,” Cinque said. Currently, citizens do not have access to privately owned conservation land, nor can they reach the ocean from city-owned Banana Boulevard that does not extend to the water. Sexton also mentioned access, but was more concerned about the Grassy Key sandbar on the oceanside, just east of the planned resort.

“The resort will own a big chunk of bay bottom. How long before they figure out a way to prevent people from congregating on the sandbar?” Sexton asked.

Leonard and Klock both said they voted “no” because of the lack of options presented by the developer and architect.

“I asked whether the resort could be redesigned without needing the (zoning change), and it seemed like the unspoken answer was that the applicant would have to go back to the drawing board and wouldn’t want to try,” said Klock.

Leonard said that question about redesigning the site plan was asked multiple times, with no answer from the applicant.

“I don’t know if there is another option. I would be speculating, but most likely it’s because it would cost more money. If they have a solid financial reason for doing what they did … most likely my vote would have been different,” Leonard said. “This is a high, high quality project being put on by a world class organization. That the two homeowners in the middle of the project are in support of it carried a lot of weight for me. It was not easy for me to vote no.”

Leonard said he hopes that the developer will have more options to present to the Marathon City Council when it considers the project.

onroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay recently made it easier for his deputies to serve, protect and save lives in more ways than one.

Ramsay spent about $130,000 of confiscated drug dealer money to buy 100 new portable automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) and dozens of doses of NARCAN, which treat opioid and heroin overdoses.

“In the past 12 months alone, NARCAN has been used 19 times All Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to save the life of someone who deputies carry NARCAN nasal sprays has overdosed on heroin or that are used to treat an increasing opioid pills,” Lt. Our guys have been carrying NARCAN for the past three years, and we just got a bunch of additional doses.”

The easy-to-use nasal spray is dispersed into a patient’s nostrils, much like Afrin or other sinus sprays, Sheagren said. “It often takes two doses, one up each nostril, to revive a patient, but it works. I’ve seen people sit straight up, when 30 seconds before, they were purple and unresponsive.”

The AEDs are now included in every patrol car. The sheriff’s office has about 150 of them, while the school district and Key West police and fire/rescue units all have them as well.

“We used to have to switch out the AEDs when we came on duty, but that meant we wouldn’t have access to one if we came upon an emergency on our way to or from work,” Sheagren said, adding that all deputies have been trained on the AEDs.” As part of the negotiations for the AEDs, Ramsay also received — at no additional charge — 10 new mobile rescue boxes that contain dozens of first aid items to treat everything from a heart attack to a broken bone. The boxes also contain a talking touchscreen tablet that asks questions of the user about the emergency situation and directs them to a specifically labelled item in the box.

“For example, if someone has a severely bleeding injury, we open the box and click on the diagram of the body to show where the injury is located, and we indicate whether it’s a broken bone or a bleeding injury,” Sheagren explained. “The screen will ask questions about the injury, then direct the user to one of the tourniquets that’s included in the box. It will speak aloud instructions and show diagrams about how to properly position and tighten a tourniquet. And if the tourniquet doesn’t stop the bleeding, it will direct you to use a QuikClot specially treated bandage.”

The mobile rescue boxes have been placed at each sheriff’s substation, the three jails, courthouses and other facilities Keyswide.

“These AEDs, NARCAN and rescue boxes will help deputies get a head start on life-saving actions,” Sheriff Ramsay said. “We certainly can’t replace our friends at fire/rescue, but often a deputy is the first on the scene of any incident, and in these situations, every minute counts.”

SESSION NEARS CLOSE IN TALLAHASSEE

ey bills await consideration as legislative session in Tallahassee draws to a close. The last day is scheduled for April 30, and the race is on to get bills approved for Gov. Ron DeSantis’ approval.

Members in the House and Senate continue to mull funding requests for key environmental projects to measures that create civil liability protections for individuals and businesses against COVID-19-related claims.

Among the notable requests is $20 million for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act, which supports ongoing water quality projects and land acquisition in the island chain. Passed by the legislature and signed into law in 2016, the state’s investment in the Keys environment totals more than $30 million.

Last year, however, $10 million in stewardship funding was cut by Gov. Ron DeSantis to offset the state’s financial losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not only did DeSantis’ budget proposal include full funding for the Stewardship Act this year, it’s also garnering support from members in the House and Senate, said state Rep. Jim Mooney. He said a lot of work went on in both chambers to get funding.

“At first, we had nothing. It’s a matter of being persistent with the right tone and the right attitude,” Mooney said. “We hope the governor will sign it.”

A House bill that proposed to designate Monroe County as an anchoring limitation area was removed during an April 19 meeting of the State Affairs Committee. An initial draft proposal of House Bill 639 had it so vessels could only anchor in the same location for a maximum of 90 days.

The rule proposal would not apply to vessels anchored in an approved and permitted mooring, but it would have significantly affected boats outside Keys mooring fields, such as those that have long been anchored around Wisteria Island off Key West.

“For Monroe County, my take on it was that there’s workforce housing out there and buoy systems. I think it’s a heavy lift to accomplish all the goals at once,” Mooney said.

Language was also snuck into the House bill that would have overturned a decision last year by Islamorada Village Council to create a vessel exclusion and swim zone off Islamorada’s White Marlin Beach. Enacting a boating-restricted area off the beach addressed ongoing issues associated with party boats anchoring in shallow water near Port Antigua and White Marlin Beach where homes and private property sit.

Language was included in the House bill authorizing municipalities and counties to establish a boatingrestricted area by ordinance within the portion of the waterway within their jurisdiction. It stated, however, that a municipality or county could not establish a “vessel-exclusion zone for public bathing beaches or swim areas within the waterway.”

“I got that squashed,” Mooney said. “Ana Maria (Rodriguez) is still working to get that taken out in the Senate. I think when it’s all said and done we’ll be OK on the Senate side.”

The bill, which also created a derelict vessel prevention program through Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation, was laid on the table for first reading on April 20.

he bill that would nullify Key West’s voterapproved cruise ship reductions is making its way through the Florida House of Representatives and its committees. The bill already passed three state senate committees and, on April 19, passed the House Commerce Committee.

The committee voted 13-5 to support House Bill 267, which prohibits the port of Key West from restricting maritime activity based on the size, type or capacity of ships.

During Monday’s 90-minute debate, the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Spencer Roach of the Fort Myers area, and Rep. Tyler Sirois of Merritt Island, said the creators of Key West’s local referendum “are engaging in economic elitism in an attempt to remake Key West in the mold of Martha’s Vineyard,” adding that the Key West Committee for Safer Cleaner Ships is trying to cherry-pick the type and wealth of tourists who visit Key West.

State Rep. Bob Rommel, a Republican who represents part of Collier County, said, “It sounds like Key West is trying to discriminate against a certain type of tourist.”

On the other hand, representatives who opposed the state bill questioned the propriety of the state dismissing the

“Is it the position of the bill’s sponsors that local government should not be able to decide how much is too much in their own backyard in terms of tourism and cruise ships?”

Rep. Joe Geller, Democrat of Aventura, asked.

Roach and Sirois also told the committee the local referendums “set a dangerous precedent that could have severe economic impacts.”

A representative of the Sierra Club called the state bill “an anti-environment, government overreach bill.”

The bill’s next House committee hearing will be determined later this week.

Leaders of the Safer Cleaner Ships committee, which orchestrated the Key West referendums, posted on its Facebook page that the addition of the cruise ship issue to the House Commerce Committee agenda was done with just a half-day’s notice, thus preventing a Key West contingent from speaking against the bill in Tallahassee, which 19 of them did last week during a state senate committee vote. When the senate version of the bill passed the last senate committee, the Safer Cleaner Ships representatives, including Key West Mayor Teri Johnston, demonstrated outside of the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, asking Gov. Ron DeSantis to veto the bill if

his past boys weightlifting season has been one of the best, says Marathon High School Coach Jessie Schubert. The boys will conclude their season this Friday, April 23 with senior Ryland Sifford who will be attending the state competition which will take place in North Florida at Port St. Joe High School.

Sifford is ranked 17th in his weight class, part of the top 20 in each category that advances to state competition.

This season the team had a fairly large turn out — 28 student athletes.

Of these, 14 advanced to districts and 11 participated in regionals. The team ended on a high note as MHS placed second at districts.

“We placed second under a very solid team, Gulliver, so I am proud of my team's efforts,” said Schubert. “It’s especially a large win as it is only the second time we have earned second place at districts in the history of the team.”

Schubert noted that next year will be a rebuilding year; ten of the players who qualified for districts are graduating this year.

“This season definitely was presented with several challenges,” said senior Anthony Machado.

Instead of traveling, the students participated in virtual meets.

“These virtual meets held us back a lot, as they did not allow for students to get the full experience,” said Schubert. “You miss valuable lessons about performing against actual competition when you aren't seeing them face to face.”

Other outstanding players on the team include Jimmy Gimeranes (ranked 22nd in Florida), Thomas Eubank (ranked 23rd) and Anthony Machado (ranked 24th).

School district is receiving COVID stimulus payments, part of which will go toward expanded summer school

ust as many U.S. citizens have been receiving stimulus payments from the federal government throughout this pandemic, the Monroe County School District (MCSD) has received emergency relief funds to address the impact that COVID-19 has had at its elementary and secondary schools.

According to Amber Archer Acevedo, coordinator of community relations for the school district, the district so far has received $1.3 million for the first round of stimulus payments. The district has also applied for and will probably be approved for a $5.8 million second-round stimulus payment.

In the near future, MCSD will have the opportunity to apply for a third stimulus payment, this one for the biggest amount yet: $13 million.

In addition, an expanded summer program, open to all students called

the Monroe Summer BEACH (Becoming Engaged and Confident Healthy Kids), has been given an official green light by the district.

The stimulus payments come from the U.S. Department of Education, which doles them out to state educational agencies. The states in turn give the stimulus payments to the school districts that apply for them in a grant-like process. This money is called the ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Relief) Fund.

Beverly Anders, MCSD’s executive director of finance and performance, said the $1.3 million stimulus (called ESSER I funds) was used to pay for personal protection equipment and cleaning supplies for staff and students, costs to deliver food to students during the summer, virtual curriculum and additional furniture and tents that allowed all students and staff to be socially distanced.”

Anders also said the ESSER II funds (the $5.8 million stimulus) will be used to help pay for summer school, all forms of before- and after-school tutoring, mental health education and training, as well as social workers and additional counselors to address student learning gaps and social issues stemming from the pandemic.

“We have not applied yet for the $13 million ESSER III funds as they have not become available from the

im Hale is doing his level best to catch as many racing pigeons as he can, but it’s slow going. Social media is alive with tales of these birds spotted in the Florida Keys.

The pigeons are wearing stamped bands that read “Cuba,” or “FCI” or “FCC.” He’s taking the birds back to his pigeon loft in Key West, and feeding them proper racing food so the birds will have the strength to fly home when released.

“These pigeons cannot survive on Froot Loops or Cocoa Puffs, and bird seed doesn’t have enough protein to sustain them” or give them the stamina they need for the 100-mile trip across the ocean, back to Havana, Hale said. Racing pigeons can’t survive in the wild because they are domesticated animals that are at risk from starvation, cars, cats and dogs.

In the past five days, he’s managed to corral 19 of the Cuban birds.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened, either. One year he collected 78, though he can’t remember the year.

Hale has a lot of experience with this sort of phenomenon — he’s been racing pigeons for three decades.

Most likely, he said, the birds were blown off course by a strong storm two weeks ago. Spring, Hale said, is prime racing season. For Cubans, the racing pigeons are a big investment and why he’s so intent on collecting the birds and getting them strong enough to be released.

“Cubans don’t have a whole lot.

They might win a year’s salary in a single pigeon race. The owners probably spend more money on the pigeons’ food than they spend feeding their own family,” he said.

Hale said he’s heard that, in Cuba, trying to lure away another owner’s racing pigeon is not uncommon. And some of the birds could end up on a dinner plate as the country faces food shortages made worse by the pan-

demic, he said. It’s clear that Hale worries about the people who share his passion, who have no way of knowing what has happened to their birds.

Hale’s advocacy has attracted the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He said an agent called this week and asked him a lot of questions. He said she seemed satisfied with his answers. And, no, he’s not sending secret messages via pigeon, thankyouverymuch.

The questions are probably warranted, however, because homing pigeons are so useful. During the Cold War, the CIA’s Office of Research and Development created a camera small enough to be strapped to the breast of a pigeon for spying purposes. And homing pigeons have been used to carry messages since the time of Julius Caesar in ancient Rome. Sending war messages via pigeon was common during World War I and World War II, too.

When the birds have regained their strength, on a clear and sunny morning, Hale said, he’ll put on some loud Latin music and open the doors to the pigeon loft.

“They don’t come with a story, so I don’t know exactly why they are here,” Hale said. “I jokingly told the FBI agent that I was going to put a happy face sticker on the birds and release them.

I want the Cuban owners to know that somebody took care of them and let them go.”

Locals who spot a homing pigeon should try to catch it, then give Hale or a bird center volunteer a call to come collect it.

“I had one call about a pigeon in the rafters. If they can’t catch it, I probably can’t either,” Hale said.

“U

nder Construction: Glass Plate Negatives of A.V. Rabenau,” an exhibit of vintage photographs, is opening Friday, April 30 in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum in Key West.

Curated by Cori Convertito, the exhibit features black-andwhite prints from the original glass plate negatives taken by an itinerant photographer known as A.V. Rabenau.

The negatives were acquired by the Key West Art & Historical Society in late 2020 from a private collector. The collection consists of over 60 early 20th century glass plate negatives taken by Rabenau during a visit to the Florida Keys. Little is known of the photographer, but his work suggests he was an experienced professional. He visited the Florida Keys during a pivotal time in its history – the construction of the Overseas Railway. The “dry plate” negatives are not dated, but it is probable that he paid a visit to the island chain some time between 1909 and 1911.

“From about 1870 to 1920, many photographers used fragile glass plates to portray daily life,” said Convertito.

“Plates were sold in boxes, factory-coated with a gelatin emulsion of silver bromide, available through mail order or at stores in large villages such as Key West. The photographer

loaded one negative at a time into their camera, made the exposure, and stored the negative until he or she developed it in a home darkroom.”

Significant portions of Rabenau’s images are staged portraits of the men, women and children living and working on Pigeon Key. Others are portraits of Key West residents taken when the photographer had a temporary studio on the island.

“The negatives speak to a special time and place in Florida Keys history,” said Convertito. “Rabenau never published his photographs, meaning the museum’s recently acquired collection brings never-beforeseen images to light. You will not find his striking portraits anywhere else. They are a treasure.”

“Under Construction: Glass Plate Negatives of A.V. Rabenau” has its public opening on Friday, April 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. Social distancing and masks will be required, in order to adhere to local and CDC guidelines. The exhibition runs until September 2021 and is sponsored by the Helmerich Trust and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. espite the heat, it was a “fast” race on April 17 for the 40th annual 7 Mile Bridge Run. Collin Wainwright of Pennsylvania, 25, finished first with a time of 37:46.

Marathon Community Theatre hosts first mainstage production since pandemic

T

wo things: One, this will be the first major production on Marathon Community Theater’s stage since the start of the pandemic. Two, there’s a real live dog “actor” among the cast of “Suite Surrender,” which opens Thursday, April 22 in Marathon.

“Yes, he’s a natural, an excellent actor, does a wonderful job,” said director Mike Chaplin heaping praise on Coco, a dog who belongs to Joanne and Jimmy Zimmerman. In the show, he plays Mr. Boodles.

It’s a bold choice for what is sure to be a very funny farce.

“Suite Surrender,” written by Michael McKeever, tells the story of two divas mistakenly assigned the same suite.

The action takes place in 1942, and the two Hollywood stars are in a Palm Beach hotel for a performance that doubles as a war fund drive.

“It’s a laugh-out-loud farce, which is just what Marathon needs right now,” said Joanne Zimmerman, current president of MCT. The divas are played by Marathon’s Terry Israel and Charla Garrison. They are joined on stage by Dakota Merytis, Jerry Nussenblatt, Ethan Qagliano, Dayanara Terpos and the three Zimmermans. Taylor Covington also has a part in the play and is a total natural on stage, Chaplin said.

“Charla is brand new to the theater — not to just our theater, but the theater, period,” said Chaplin. “And she is absolutely phenomenal.”

The actors have been rehearsing diligently … mostly.

“For the first couple of weeks it was a problem because the cast couldn’t stop laughing at some of the lines,” said Chaplin. “But they got a hold of themselves and have been perfecting the split-second timing for this show.”

Expect mistaken identities, overblown egos, double entendres and something about a red rose.

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but look out for the red rose,” said Chaplin. Claudia McEwen is the producer of the show.

“Suite Surrender” opens on Thursday, April 22 and runs through May 15. The shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with a curtain at 8 p.m. There is a matinee scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 9. Tickets are $25 each and MCT members will receive a $5 discount per ticket. Edward McGraw Edward Glenn McGraw of Key Colony Beach, Florida passed away on April 10, 2021 in Tavernier with family at his side.

Edward was a long-time resident and general contractor in the Marathon area.

Through his company, McGraw Development, he built residential homes for over 30 years throughout the Middle Keys.

Despite his gruff nature, all who knew and loved Ed appreciated his generosity, his cooking, and his willingness to render aid when needed.

Edward is survived by his daughters, Kassady McGraw and Kaelee McGraw of Key Colony Beach, and his son, Glenn McGraw of Marathon. He also leaves behind his sister, Susan McGraw, his niece Kathleen Bowin and his nephew, Billy Bowin as well as his former wife and devoted companion Ivette McGraw and his step-children Ivette Morales, Jacqueline De La Rosa, Sonia Morales-Barros and Hernando Morales.

A Celebration of Life is tentatively planned for June 12 in Key Colony Beach. Details to follow soon.

BRIEFLY Keys college hosts acclaimed poet The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) invites the community to participate in its second CFK Poetics virtual event of the series on April 29 at 6 p.m.

Nationally acclaimed poet Ross Gay will read his work and take questions from the audience. The free event will be primarily virtual. However, limited seating will be available in the CFK Library to view the livestream of the reading.

Gay is the author of four books of poetry: Against Which; Bringing the Shovel Down; Be Holding; and Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, winner of the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. His new poem, Be Holding, was released from the University of Pittsburgh Press in September of 2020.

His collection of essays, The Book of Delights, was released by Algonquin Books in 2019.

The goal of the CFK Poetics series is to connect the Florida Keys community and CFK students with poets whose work illustrates the critical intersections and changing landscapes and examines the social, psychological, and environmental changes that workingclass residents in a tourist destination can identify with and by which they can be inspired.

United Way helps distribute $10M locally during pandemic United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) was formed through the merger of the United Way of the Florida Keys and the United Way of Collier County in April of 2020. Working with local companies, area not-for-profits, governments at the city, county, and federal level, and a large network of generous private donors, the organization has helped to distribute nearly $10 million in assistance to individuals and charitable organizations in its first year.

As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic and recession, housing and food insecurity became acute problems for South Florida communities.

UWCK responded by assisting the City of Key West and Collier County with the distribution of approximately $7.5 million in housing aid and more than $500,000 in food assistance. As unemployment peaked during Monroe County’s lockdown, United Way of Collier and the Keys’ food assistance fed nearly 10 percent of the county’s population. In Collier County, housing assistance kept more than a thousand people in their homes.

DIET OR REGULAR? How about water instead?

W

hat effect do artificial sweeteners have on our weight? Since the mid’70s, artificial sweetener consumption in the U.S. has doubled. Since the 1990s, new products have exploded, leading to more than 6,000 products being introduced from just 1999 to 2004!

Guess what else happened? We have gone from an obesity rate of 8% in the mid-1970s to DR. JOHN over 42% by 2017. That is not a typo: forty-two WOLTZ percent.

These chemicals are designed to add sweetness without adding calories. They are hundreds of times more sweet than table sugar (sucrose), so very small amounts are needed. Do they help with weight loss or weight maintenance? The answer is … maybe?

Weight is basically a component of energy balance. Positive energy balance means more calories than needed, resulting in weight gain. Negative energy balance results in weight loss. So, if I replace a sugared 150-calorie drink with a zero-calorie drink, I can lose a pound for every case that I no longer drink, right? In theory, as long as I control my other dietary intakes and make sure that that 150 calorie savings is truly saved.

As with most things, it is a little more complicated than that. Our minds and metabolism get in the way. When we ingest artificial sweeteners our body realizes there is no follow-through on caloric intake and it appears this increases our motivation to eat MORE to compensate. Food is right up there with sex, drugs and rock and roll when it comes to brain activity, reward and addiction. Abstaining from certain foods (sugar is one) leads to binging behaviors. There are two components to this system: sensory, which is the tastes and smells associated with eating — so far so good; but the next component is postingestive and this is where we lose the benefits of calorie-free. Functional MRI studies have shown that artificial sweeteners do not affect the brain the same way as glucose. Most of us likely end up eating all of our saved calories from going sugar-free.

So, diet or regular? The real question should be, “Can I control my caloric intake?” If your weight maintenance plan is based on a diet soda, you probably should reconsider.

That, or really amp up your calorie burn!

THE FLORIDA KEYS NAME GAME: THE STATE’S EDITION

A look at how various islands got their names

M

issouri and Ohio keys are situated in the Lower Keys and, at least in terms of the Overseas Highway, are linked one after the other. Missouri Key is in the area of MM 39 and sandwiched between Ohio Key and Little Duck Key. Railroad workers reportedly named both during the construction of the first conduit to connect Key West to the Florida mainland, Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. Workers hailing from those particular states likely chose the names.

The islands have known other names. Missouri Key has been called Little Grassy Key and Grassy Island. Ohio Key is sometimes called Sunshine Key because the Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina occupies much of the island. After Ohio Key, there is something of an anomaly in the Florida Keys, Bahia Honda.

Whether traveling by train in the old days or driving along the Overseas Highway today, the next island in the chain is recognized as West Summerland Key. Just north of the Spanish Harbor Bridge that connects West Summerland to Big Pine Key is Big Mangrove Island. On Florida East Coast Railway survey maps, Big Mangrove Island is identified as Iowa Key and named for the same reason Missouri and Ohio keys earned their stately monikers.

I

n recent years, the world of photography has seen a bit of a renaissance. The age of camera phones and digital photography sprouted a significant uptick in images posted on countless platforms and apps.

Few of us can say we do not like to share our photos – maybe even oversharing on occasion, or so we’re told. A professional photographer sees composition, seeks the correct light and shadow, fine-tunes the aesthetics and focuses on things like asymmetrical balance, contrast, reflection and more, to direct the viewer’s eye and capture emotions. This is something we know when we see, but can seldom define.

CJ Groth is a highly trained and incredibly skilled photographer who lives right here in our little island paradise. Groth was born in Iowa and discovered photography in her youth when her brother

bought her first Nikon camera and delivered it from Japan. She earned a master’s degree in journalism and an MBA and spent years working in corporate America before her fortuitous arrival in Key West.

Groth is a full-time professional photographer and a 30year resident of the Keys. She lives and works in Key West but has a breadth of subject matter that includes far more than just our beautiful backyard. Some of Groth’s masterful photos in her Cuba collection are brilliant and perfectly halt time, capturing the essence of historic Havana. Her wildlife depictions and tropical sunsets are majestic.

“I never know when I’ll see something that will just speak to me, which is why I always carry my camera,” Groth said. “It is my hope others will feel the same connection with the subject when they see my work.”

Her work differs from that of most photographers since Groth combines the best of darkroom (process) and digital photography, enhancing color as only she can.

FKMCD-Oxitec Mosquito Project Launching Soon!

Thank you to the Florida Keys community for your interest and support. Oxitec has a long-standing partnership with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and will evaluate the effectiveness of Oxitec mosquitoes to control the invasive, disease-spreading Aedes aegypti mosquito in the Florida Keys. The first of Oxitec’s just-add-water mosquito boxes will be placed soon and Oxitec’s non-biting male mosquitoes will begin to emerge in May. The Aedes aegypti makes up just 4% of the mosquito population in the Keys, but is responsible for virtually all of the disease transmission. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit dengue, Zika and other diseases in people and heartworm and other deadly diseases in our animal family. Oxitec’s safe, non-biting male mosquitoes will be released in small areas to demonstrate their effectiveness controlling the invasive Aedes aegypti.
