Health providers for low-income, uninsured finally obtain a few shots

B

etween mass vaccine clinics and pharmacies coming on line, a little more than 25,700 COVID-19 shots have entered the arms of Keys residents.

Health care providers are beginning to obtain their initial vaccine shipments following a longer than anticipated wait. And while clinics like Good Health Clinic are pleased to receive the first package, dose totals aren’t quite to the number requested.

With offices in Tavernier and Marathon, Good Health Clinic received its first round of COVID-19 doses on April 5.

The clinic originally put in a request for 1,000 shots to the Florida Shots program, which helps healthcare providers with the vaccinations for their patients.

Doses received in the first package totaled 100.

“We’re hopeful that they’re going to be sending more soon,” said Kate Banick, executive director for the Good Health Clinic, which serves more than 3,600 of the uninsured and low income in the Keys. “We’re also working with the department of health with some of the vaccines they received to distribute them to our patients.”

Rural Health Network of Monroe County is a community-based nonprofit that provides health care services to those in the Lower Keys. On March 26, the organization received 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

“We’re still waiting on 200 more second doses for those same patients,” said Elizabeth Baker, human resources director of Rural Health Network. “Last time, we got an email and a tracking number and the doses arrived the very next day.”

Nevertheless, Baker said, the vaccination process for 200 people 50 and older went “flawlessly.” She recommends calling the organization or visiting online to learn about additional vaccine opportunities.

Community Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI) provides primary health care to residents in the Upper and Middle Keys, in addition to its clinics on the mainland. CHI’s Marianne Vinizio said vaccines were administered to staff in January and eventually to patients once they received additional doses. A total of 236 people in the Keys received a vaccine through CHI, which is a federally-qualified health center. On the mainland, it has vaccinated 4,594 patients.

The vaccines are offered in Marathon on Mondays, when the clinic is typically closed, and on Saturday in Tavernier, staying open later to accommodate the vaccine patients.

CHI is offering the Moderna vaccine, but Vinizio said it just received its first batch of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“Initially, everyone was experiencing challenges,” Vinizio said. “We put the orders in and we are receiving them. Across the board, we’re hoping to get smoother, more frequent shipments.”

Florida began receiving vaccines in late December, with Moderna vaccines delivered to more than 220 hospitals. Pfizer vaccines were making their way to the state not long after that.

Priority went to those over 65 who were Florida residents. Nationwide, more than 70% of the 65-and-older population have received a vaccine since then, according to recent data. Health care workers and first responders were also given preference as the initial rollout continued.

Eligibility expanded to those in their 50s and 40s last month as more vaccines trickled into the state. Anyone 18 or older can sign up beginning this week to receive a one-dose Johnson & Johnson shot or the two-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

More than 6.4 million Florida residents have received a vaccine. Of those, 3.7 million have completed their series.

Through a federal COVID-19 vaccine program, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Walgreens and CVS pharmacies began to receive doses. Publix announced in February that all store pharmacies in the Keys would be receiving doses, albeit in limited quantities. Reservations for shots went fast when they opened. Winn-Dixie pharmacies in Tavernier and Key West also came online, and eventually, CVS and Walgreens pharmacies were administering vaccines.

With pharmacies obtaining doses each week, local health care providers like Good Health Clinic are also hoping to see some more. Banick said the 200 doses received will be administered this week and the next.

“We’re hoping that more vaccines are coming in installments, but we don’t know when or how many are coming,” Banick said.

The Florida Health Department of Monroe County said it will be distributing some vaccines not only to municipalities, but also to local doctors’ offices that signed up through Florida Shots. Alison Kerr, public information officer, said a survey was conducted in December to see what offices are willing to administer shots.

SUMMER SCHOOL FOR EVERYONE?

onroe County officials are working on a special summer school session that would be open to all students as a way to regroup after a historic and challenging pandemic year. The details should be finalized by the end of April.

“We’d like to give students an opportunity to re-engage in school and enjoy themselves — a range of offerings to tickle their imaginations and interests. Our kids have had a difficult time during COVID,” schools superintendent Theresa Axford told Keys Weekly.

“Typically, summer school is geared toward recovery and remediation,” said Amber Archer Acevedo, coordinator of community relations for the school district. “This one will be expanded to all students to encompass a wide array of other types of activities and formats. We know students have lost time in the classroom and with their peers.”

While Axford emphasized that the details of summer school are still being brainstormed, the district has settled on a name for the expanded session: Monroe Summer BEACH (Becoming Engaged and Confident Healthy Kids) program.

The summer school will still include remediation and credit retrieval for the students who need it, but it may now also involve new creative offerings that will be inspired by teachers’ interests.

“For example, if an elementary teacher really loves art, they can put together a program,” said Acedevo, pointing out that the district doesn’t want to put more pressure on teachers after their challenging year.

“Another program could be a reading club or a physical activity. Then parents can look and say, ‘Hey, I’d like my kid to go here.’ We anticipate in two weeks — by the end of April — being able to put this information out to parents so they can see what’s available for their kids.”

Axford cautioned that the district is still working out details like the length and time of the school sessions, but one possible schedule is two four-week programs: June 7 to July 2 and July 6 to July 30. The age groups would range from kindergarten to 12th grade.

“Some other districts in the state are requiring summer school, but that might not go over big with the high school kids,” said school board member Sue Woltanski. “I think it’s more needed in the younger kids.

Not necessarily academically, but emotionally.”

Woltanski said some kids may even ask their parents if they can go to summer school when they see that their friends are going.

“When I first moved here to Monroe County in 2008, the summer school program was required for some kids but it was also offered for anyone who wanted to go,” she said. “And my daughter was super jealous, because they went bowling every Friday. Funding has made it difficult.”

Woltanski said the summer school could possibly be paid for with CARES Act funding, and that Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran has stated his intention of using the funding to close “achievement gaps,” which are test scores among different socioeconomic groups.

She also pointed out that this week is crucial for decision-making about summer school due to thirdgrade testing taking place during that time. Florida has mandatory third-grade retention if children don’t score high enough.

“This year, because of COVID, there's been a national movement: Should we even have testing? Last year, school districts canceled spring testing and school grades, and let kids be promoted to fourth grade through course work.”

An announcement should be imminent of how districts would use the third-grade reading test score.

“Should we be retaining third grade kids for (failing)?” Woltanski asked. “I don’t think so. Should we be providing them with a school session to help them catch up? Maybe.

This week will determine what the state has to say.”

COVID CASES CONFIRMED DURING SCHOOL REOPENING WEEK

ecky Herrin, Monroe County School District’s communications coordinator for COVID-19 response, told Keys Weekly that eight COVID cases were confirmed last week, resulting in students in two classes being told by the district to stay home or risk exposure to the virus. Six of those cases were in children, while two were teachers.

The week starting March 29 was intended to be the school district’s official reopening to a pre-COVID five-day in-person class schedule.

“One first-grade class was excluded due to possible exposure last week,” Herrin told Keys Weekly in an email. “One pre-K class was excluded (April 5).”

Herrin also said the district doesn’t give out specifics about which classes/ schools the cases were in. But the “COVID Dashboard” link on KeysSchools. com, which keeps a tally of confirmed cases, indicated that between March 29 and April 5, six cases were at Key West High School, including five students and one teacher; one case was a teacher at Plantation Key Elementary School in Tavernier; and one case was a student at Stanley Switlik Elementary School in Marathon.

But Axford emphasized that teachers and students are content with how the reopening went.

“I met with principals last week,” she told Keys Weekly. “Everything’s going great. Children are maintaining social distance at 3 feet, which is the new CDC recommendation, and wearing masks. And teachers are maintaining 6-foot distance, and everyone is hand washing. Things are going very, very well. We’re pleased, and the teachers are pleased. And students are happy.”

County permitting offices to open for in-person services The Monroe County permitting offices will replace the permit dropoff/pick-up and mail-in system with in-person permitting services starting on Monday, April 12. The reopening plan of in-person intake and issuance will try to minimize delivery delays. COVID-19 precautions will be in place at all four permitting offices.

Due to space limitations, meetings with plans examiners, inspectors, planners and biologists will continue via phone, email and Zoom. Pre-COVID-19, staff tried to assist all customers who arrived before 3 p.m., but now all customers who arrive before or at 3 p.m. may not be served.

There may also be a backlog of dropped-off permit applications when the transition is made. Staff is working to eliminate the backlog.

Date and time order may be disrupted until all backlogged drop-off applications are processed.

At the Key Largo office, two customer service representatives will be at the front counter 6 feet apart. There will be one line for customers, with 6 feet of distance between customers. Those waiting can likely be accommodated indoors.

Key Largo is the only office where sufficient space will allow for a separate area outside of the permitting line to submit applications for Planning & Environmental Resources, including but not limited to variances, conditional uses, and ROGO applications. Submittal of these Planning & Environmental Resources applications will occur at a marked location in the lobby near the CSRs. Planning & Environmental Resources applications will then be sent to Marathon for processing.

slamorada Village Council is set to consider an ordinance that extends the number of years a member serves on the dais.

Proposed amendments to the village charter to lengthen the term would go before village voters, if approved by council members on Thursday, April 8.

Representatives to the village dais serve two-year terms. And they aren’t staggered, meaning all five seats will be up for election in 2022.

That’s due to a complete overhaul on the dais following last year’s election, which saw new faces chosen for each seat.

Several current council members believe increasing the term to three or four years and staggering them would be key to keeping a village manager for the long haul.

Councilman David Webb said it could bring stability to the dais.

“We haven’t even begun to tackle some of the most strategic issues like stormwater,” Webb said.

“You talk about a year? You’re looking at 10 years from really working on the concept of stormwater, looking at what all the requirements are going to be, looking at how the funding’s going to happen, and then you have all the events in between that either accelerate the timeline or shorten it.”

Discussion over term lengths dates back to January 2018 when then-council members directed the village attorney to prepare an ordinance that proposed staggered four-year terms. Public hearings were held in June and July of 2018 with a referendum placed on the 2018 general election ballot. The amendment didn’t pass, however.

“There are council members sitting here who want to do things that may take a year and a half to finalize,” Vice Mayor Pete Bacheler said during last month’s meeting.

“And you can’t do that if at the end of the 15 months or so, you’re turning around and running for election again.”

Key West commissioners serve four year terms, while Marathon council members serve for three years. Monroe County commissioners serve two-year terms.

In other unfinished business, the council will provide additional public discussion at the April 8 meeting on a management plan for the Fills. Concerns were heard following council approval of CPH Inc. as the village’s consultant to assist in creating a master plan for maintenance on three small islands connecting Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys and Indian Key boat ramp. Per the agreement, CPH Inc. is receiving $55,000 to come up with plans, which are required per a pair of 5-year sublease agreements with the Florida Department of Transportation and state Department of Environmental Protection.

Adopted on March 18, the resolution to hire CPH Inc. didn’t initiate improvements to the Fills. Specific plans will come back to the council in a public meeting prior to a final draft for review by FDOT and FDEP. “The management plan will not commit the village to completing any elements of the plan, but will help expedite FDOT and FDEP approval of improvements included in the plan that may be desired at some point in the future,” the village stated recently to the public.

Around $350,000 was approved in the 2020-21 adopted budget in the capital projects fund for the Fills master plan engineering and construction costs. The revenue for the project comes from the local government discretionary sales surtax, which is the primary funding stream for capital projects.

Some of the key points to the plan will be delineated parking and a cable barrier system. Cones and barriers remain at the Fills in an effort to control the number of vehicles and people there.

WASHED AWAY: ALLIGATOR KEY, SOMBRERO KEY, LOOE KEY Over time, some land masses have disappeared

O

ne of the things distinguishing the Keys from Florida’s sand-based barrier islands like Captiva, Sanibel, and Anna Maria Island is their construction. By and large, the Florida Keys are based on limestone pedestals, set in their ways and relatively unmoved by the forces of wind and tide. As with everything, there are exceptions. For instance, in the Dry Tortugas, tidal forces, storms, and currents cause the sandy Middle Key to appear and disappear periodically.

Outside of the Dry Tortugas, not every key has survived the test of time. Three of these keys bear the notable names of Alligator, Sombrero, and Looe. As noted on the U.S. Coast Survey conducted by A.D. Bache (1848-1852), Alligator Key was located offshore of the Matecumbe keys. That area is recognized as home to Alligator Reef and Alligator Lighthouse today. A story involving the island was featured in an 1874 edition of Lippincott’s Magazine. Alligator Key was described as “…about a mile and a half long, elevated but two or three feet above the sea, and bordered with a growth of mangroves, upon which grow oysters and other mollusks.”

A group had been traveling to Key West aboard a ship that stopped at Alligator Key for turtles and eggs. When the group ventured ashore, they waited for the lumbering reptiles to heave, slap and splash out of the Atlantic-facing shallows and onto the sandy island. That night, two turtles lumbered ashore. No one

approached as the turtles dug their nests, deposited their eggs, and labored to cover them up.

It would not be the only one. The easternmost key along the island chain was once a small spit of land referred to in some records as Dry Banks and identified in others as Sombrero Kay. J.W. Norie wrote of the island in his “Sailing directions for the Gulf”: “5 miles S. 1/4 E. from the west end of Cayo Vaca, there is a small sandy kay on the reef, called by the Spaniards Cayo Sombrero; this is the easternmost kay on the reef.”

In John Lee Williams’ early account of Florida, he described Kay Sombrero as “the easternmost islet on the reef. It is situated six or seven miles N.E. from Bahia Honda, and four miles S.W. from Knight's Key, the western key of the Vaccas group. It is but a patch of rock, covered with a few mangroves and pieces of wreck.”

Today, this is the general area of the Sombrero Key Lighthouse and the reason why the word “key” is part of the lighthouse’s name. At 142 feet, Sombrero is the tallest of all the lights marking the Florida Reef.

Sombrero Key was not the last island in the chain to disappear. One of the most popular snorkeling reefs in the Lower Keys is not called a reef but, instead, Looe Key. Not a speck of land is in sight. It has not always been the case. In 1744, the 44-gun H.M.S. Looe hit a shallow reef offshore of Ramrod Key. It was dark. They were sailing by starlight. To the men on watch, one moment it appeared to be clear sailing, and the next, they saw the frothy white of waves breaking over a reef.

Alarms were sounded and evasive actions taken, but the Looe’s rudder struck the reef, broke off, and the ship, unable to steer, was pounded by swells and beaten against the coral beds. Rather than go down with

the ship, 274 sailors escaped to a nearby spit of land. The ship’s captain noted “a small beach of an islet was approximately 300 yards long and 100 yards wide.”

The small stretch of land became known as Looe Key. The land has since disappeared, and today the shallow coral reefs are recognized as Looe Key. It is home to one of the more offbeat Florida Keys events, the Looe Key Underwater Music Festival. Bill Becker, then a disc jockey and news director at U.S. 1 Radio, 104.1 FM, and Dr. Fred Troxel conceived the event in 1985.

Scuba divers and snorkelers are invited out to the reef to swim with the fish, explore the corals and listen to Jimmy Buffett tunes broadcast through a series of strategically placed underwater speakers. In addition to Buffett tunes, reggae, and the Beatles’ “Octopus’s Garden,” there are public service announcements from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary promoting diver etiquette and coral reef awareness. Get ready, the annual event is held on the first Saturday after the Fourth of July, and summer is just around the corner.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNDER ATTACK IN FLORIDA

T

his is your wake-up call, Florida, and we need your help to save affordable housing.

Recently, Senate President Wilton Simpson and Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls unveiled legislation, HB 5401 and SPB 2512, to permanently redirect two-thirds of the housing trust funds each year to sea level rise and wastewater infrastructure projects.

That’s some serious money that won’t be available to teachers, firefighters, nurses and other first responders for housing assistance.

If this legislation passes, 66% of the $423 million available in the housing trust funds will go toward priorities other than housing.

This is unacceptable.

For nearly 30 years, the State Housing Initiative Program has received $2.6 billion from the housing trust funds that has helped 217,000 households with down payment and closing cost assistance, among other housing programs. A $423 million investment into housing programs next year would create 33,000 jobs and more than $4.9 billion in positive economic impact. That’s sound policy as we seek to restore our economy to a pre-pandemic state.

Money for the housing trust funds comes from a portion of the documentary stamp taxes charged on every real estate transaction. In 1992, Realtors advocated for this tax — 10 cents per $100 of value — on the condition that all money collected went to housing programs.

But for years, that hasn’t happened.

During years of budget shortfalls, legislators swept more than $2.3 billion collected for the housing trust funds into general revenue.

And now, when the people of Florida are experiencing pandemic-related challenges that include a critical shortage of affordable, attainable housing, there’s a plan to permanently reduce these vital “trust” funds to the lowest level of all.

The idea of permanently redirecting two-thirds of the housing trust funds is concerning during a pandemic. Housing has been our refuge, office, childcare and more.

Essential workers, our first and last line of defense, would be left with one less option to secure housing, be it down payment or rental assistance.

Florida Realtors is the voice for millions of property owners who have paid into the housing trust funds. On their behalf, know that we appreciate the need to fund other priorities. But affordable housing is a priority now more than ever in this post-pandemic economy. Affordability housing is a priority for the elderly on fixed incomes and lowincome families. Affordable housing is a priority for teachers, firefighters, first responders and others who serve our communities. Reefs benefit from holiday trash trek By: Tiffany Duong and Justin Benson

E

aster Sunday looked a little different at Key Dives. The crew and community of divers all pitched in for another Trash Trek. These dives are a shop specialty, where participants help remove trash from local reefs while enjoying their beauty. Everyone is invested in the health of the oceans and has the opportunity to help with their own two hands.

On the holiday morning, the dive boat was dedicated to a full-day trip. Everyone was eager and on board to dive with a purpose.

Their targets were Bishop, Crater and Mosh Pit reefs in Islamorada.

Despite choppy conditions and heavy winds, the staff and Key Dives family had a wildly successful day. Donning bunny ears even underwater, they collected 677 pounds of debris off the ocean floor during this special Trash Trek. Within that debris were discarded and derelict traps, anchors, chains, rope and even fiberglass panels from a boat.

For years, Key Dives has been a community leader in cleanup dives and other conservation efforts. In May 2020, the shop celebrated a whopping 10,000 pounds of debris removed by its divers. With this newest dive, that total is at 13,094 pounds.

Mike Goldberg, Key Dives’ owner, also helped launch I.CARE — Islamorada Conservation and Restoration Education in June 2020.

The non-profit restores coral in Islamorada and coordinates with Key Dives and other local dive and snorkel shops to join their efforts.

Everything is done to help the coral reef recover because Goldberg and his team realize that a healthy reef means a healthy local economy.

When the surge and currents push them along the fragile ocean floor ecosystem, debris harms the reefs, creatures and corals. Preventing this harm plays a major part in Key Dives’ dedication to the cause.

Everyone can contribute to the reef’s health by practicing sustainable boating and fishing. Key Dives remains grateful for the community and all the visiting divers who help clear the reef of hazardous debris and hopes to build a more resilient reef together.

COUNTY: SOFTWARE WILL HELP BUILDING PERMIT HANG-UPS BOCC invites public to discuss solutions for backlog

t a BOCC March 31 workshop, Mayor Michelle Coldiron’s announcement at the start of the proceedings gave a hint about the frustrations that staff and the public have had about Monroe County’s building permit review process.

“I’m going to caution you all,” she said. “I love our staff. I know the commissioners here appreciate how hard our staff works, that they’re spread thin. This meeting is not going to be a bash of our staff … and I will use my gavel.”

But in the end, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners — along with staff and some industry professionals who attended the workshop — discussed solutions to help the county’s permit-review process, which is overseen by the building and planning/environmental departments, run more smoothly.

The solutions include new software, eliminating the COVID-era drop box, rehiring staff who were laid off during COVID and regular meetings between officials and the public.

Christine Hurley, assistant county administrator who oversees the county’s building and planning/ environmental departments, gave a presentation to outline current permitreview procedures.

She said permit applications are currently received on paper and routed physically to multiple stops, extending the time that they are typically reviewed in a first round to 35 days.

Consequently, the county is sitting on a backlog of 1,100 incomplete permit applications.

“It’s not a pretty sight behind the doors, where all these things are sitting,” she said.

In addition, due to COVID restrictions, a dropbox was instituted for the public to hand in their applications, as opposed to the building department’s front desk. Hurley said that after an application is put in the dropbox, it isn’t added into the computer system for one or two weeks.

The staff anticipates that the elimination of the dropbox on April 12 will make the application-intake process faster. But personnel also highly recommend a new software package for office computers, so applications can be seen by departments simultaneously rather than having to wait for a physical routing of hard copy.

Per Hurley’s presentation, the software implementation will cost $625,000 during 2021, but more payments over the following four years will bring the total cost to over $1 million.

“It’s going to be expensive. But it’s like all new things, particularly if they occur on computers,” Commissioner David Rice said. “I think that will be a bigger solution than any single issue we could choose.”

Hurley also said COVID-inspired budget cuts in October 2020 led to 11.5 building positions and 6.5 planning/environmental positions being axed. Meanwhile, total permit intake went up 4 percent from Oct. 1, 2020 to Jan. 31, 2021.

The building department staff recommended rehiring customer service reps, floodplain inspectors and plan examiners, while the planning/environmental department needs to rehire senior environmental planners.

Hurley also broached the idea of completely new staff: an inspector just for unlicensed contractors and a “permit ombudsman” for Key Largo and Marathon “when designers and contractors get to the end of their wits,” she said.

But planning/environmental department staff also wanted the public to understand that an old-fashioned routing system isn’t the only problem.

The county is subject to a lot of red tape because it is home to eight endangered species. If a property owner has one of those species potentially making its home on their parcel, then the permit review becomes more complicated. At one point, staff screened a map with a dizzying collage of multicolored squares detailing the endangered species-related workflow of permit review.

“This was eye-opening in terms of all the additional hoops we have to jump through, due to the federal Endangered Species Act,” said Coldiron.

Rudy Krause of Rudy Krause Construction was one of the industry attendees.

“When a job is held three to four weeks (for permit review), it’s hard for a smaller contractor to hold onto employees,” he said, suggesting that the county hold more building department meetings every few months to discuss problems, as was done in the past.

“The most frustrated people are the customer service reps on the front line,” said Hurley. “Imagine how they feel every day coming into that. We’ve lost two people in Stock Island last week.”

“I’m going to propose bringing a resolution forward for our next commission meeting, to put together an advisory committee of the industry and the private sector and residents to advise us,” said Commissioner Craig Cates. “This is not going to end today.

This is the beginning.”

FINDING PARADISE, AND SUCCESS Local author talks new book, re-release of best seller

slamorada’s Macy Butler remembers a seventh-grade writing task.

While assigned a simple essay by her teacher, Butler wasn’t satisfied with writing just a few paragraphs.

“I remember my teacher looking at me like, ‘You want to write a chapter book?’ I was like, ‘I want to write a chapter book,’” said Butler.

An admiration for writing and a running imagination resulted in four published books — the most recent being “Paradise Found,” which reached her doorstep on April 7. Not only that, another book she’s re-releasing next month hit the USA Today Best-Selling list.

Butler said she couldn’t think of a better time to introduce herself to the community than with the new release of “Paradise Found.”

She’s a tennis addict who loves to write sassy heroines and the hot

heroes who sweep them off their feet.

Butler said she started “Paradise Found,” which centers around a divorcee who falls in love with her scuba instructor during a Caribbean vacation, some two-and-half years ago before putting it aside.

“I researched the romance market and realized I should be writing series, and this was a standalone book,” she said. “The idea didn’t seem like it was part of a series. I shelved it because I had another idea.”

Nine months ago, she was asked to publish a book for March with a group of other authors as part of a travel series. That’s when she decided to return to the story she had stashed away. Within a seven-week period, “Paradise Found” was complete.

“The idea behind the Vagabond series was that no one was traveling with everyone locked in their houses because of the pandemic,” she said.

“People will probably like to read about travel, so I said, ‘I have this book I started that’s set in Grand Cayman.’”

“It was my fastest book and best one yet,” she continued. “It’s also my shortest, because I tend to write long.

The story ends in the Keys on a fictitious island called Paradise Key.” Originally from Tennessee, Butler received her scuba certification in the late ’90s and spent three years in the Keys as a scuba instructor. She left on a sailboat and ended up living in the mountains of Guatemala. She’d often come back to the island chain for vacation.

In 2011, she bought a home in the Keys. By 2016, she was a full-time resident.

When she’s not writing, Butler works as a physical therapist. She enjoys down time on the beach with a cocktail or a day out on the water.

“Diving attracted me,” she said.

“This is where I was certified and came back to teach.”

Life took an unexpected turn for Butler during the beginnings of COVID, when her husband of 17 years left her during a spring break in Guatemala.

“The last year was insane,” she said.

The writing didn’t stop despite the way things were unfolding for Butler. She released the romantic suspense novel “Unholy Trinity” as part of the “Sinful Secrets” contemporary romance anthology. It ended up hitting the USA Today Best-Selling list at No. 125 on Sept.

23, 2020.

“I was in my house working on a physical therapy patient when my phone dinged repeatedly,” she said. “I went to check my phone and started screaming and jumping up and down.”

Butler is re-releasing “Unholy Trinity” next month. It’s the story of a Florida woman, Lena, who finds the courage to escape her abusive fiance two weeks before her wedding.

Lena goes into hiding in Antigua, Guatemala and makes a fast friend in Trinity, who’s a globetrotting Australian backpacker. A privileged tall, dark and handsome Guatemalan entrepreneur makes their acquaintance, and sparks fly.

They band together when Lena's past threatens to catch up with her.

In addition, Butler released the three-book “Happier Ever After” series from April 2019 to February 2020. The romance trilogy follows Sally's personal journey of letting go of how and what she should be and embracing what she could be. Letting her guard down and exploring her wilder side opens up a new world, and her husband enjoys the benefits of a happier wife and a happier life, but it's not without hiccups along the way.

DANIEL PEASE The three-sport athlete has played for the Hurricanes football and track teams for the last four years, as well as baseball during his freshman and sophomore years. A senior, Pease said football is his favorite sport. “It gets my adrenaline pumping when you hear all the big hits and when good plays are made.” Pease said his uncle led him to play football at Coral Shores. His most memorable moment was returning an interception for a touchdown. He credits his success on and off the field to his parents, coaches and teachers.

“And definitely my grandfather who has been there for me whenever I needed him,” he said. His advice to younger high school athletes? “Love the game you play, and play with your heart. Work hard, play hard, listen to your coaches’ advice, be patient and don’t get mad at the little things.”

The Evolve Fashion Show on April 2 allowed attendees to view the latest swimwear collections from Evolve Boutique in Islamorada, Kadan Swimwear, designed by Key Largo’s Kelsey Caputo, and BadFish Swimwear, created by Key Largo’s Tyler Brunner. Pampered by Islamorada’s J-Kindred, models wowed the crowd as they unveiled various swim styles.

Models also shared a champagne toast with viewers, and that followed with a little dancing with music by DJ Maynor.

Caputo launched her first luxury Keys style collection just after she turned 18 in 2018. Kadan Swimwear and Evolve Boutique, owned by Danielle Pierog and Jodi Mientkiewicz, collaborated on a swim collection available for purchase exclusively at Evolve, located at 81547 Old Highway.
