KEY WEST’S CRUISE SHIP VOTE HITS ROUGH WATER STATE BILL TO VOID KEY WEST’S REFERENDUM PASSES COMMITTEE MANDY MILES

A

state legislator’s attempt to nullify a Key West referendum on cruise ships moved a step closer to passage on March 10.

A majority of Key West voters elected in November to reduce Key West’s pre-pandemic cruise ship industry by about 92%, compared to pre-pandemic port visits.

With ballots as their voices, those voters — about 62% of them — told city lawmakers to change the city’s charter so it would prohibit cruise ships that carry more than 1,300 total people, not just passengers, from docking in Key West. The charter change would also mean no more than 1,500 people can come ashore in Key West on a given day and gives docking priority to ships with the best environmental records.

Then the Florida legislature convened on March 2 and Sen. Jim Boyd, a Republican from Bradenton, filed Senate Bill 426, which would nullify the Key West charter changes by taking away port cities’ authority to turn away certain ships, based on size, passenger count or other characteristics.

Boyd’s bill also expressly nullifies any local referendum or ballot initiative to change a city’s port operations. The bill applies to four of Florida’s 15 ports that are owned by cities and not counties — Key West, Pensacola, Panama City and St. Petersburg.

Senate Bill 426 states, “a local government may not restrict or regulate commerce in the seaports of this state ... including, but not limited to, regulating or restricting a vessel’s type or size, source or

type of cargo, or number, origin, or nationality of passengers. All such matters are expressly preempted to the state.”

The bill also specifies, “A local ballot initiative or referendum may not restrict maritime commerce in the seaports of this state, including, but not limited to, restricting such commerce based on any of the following: 1. Vessel type, size, number, or capacity. 2. Number, origin, nationality, embarkation, or disembarkation of passengers or crew or their entry into this state or any local jurisdiction. 3. Source, type, loading, or unloading of cargo. 4.

Environmental or health records of a particular vessel or vessel line. (b) Any local ballot initiative or referendum, or any local law, charter amendment, ordinance, resolution, regulation, or policy adopted in a local ballot initiative or referendum, in violation of this subsection which was adopted before, on, or after the effective date of this act is prohibited and void.”

The Florida senate transportation committee on Wednesday morning passed Senate Bill 426 with a 5-2 vote. Senator Keith Perry was absent for the vote.

Sen. Rodriguez told the Keys Weekly on March 9, the day before the committee meeting, “I don’t know for certain that this bill stems from the Key West vote. It’s possible that’s what prompted Senator Boyd to file it, but I’m still going to give it my all with regard to my amendment.”

MARYLIN’S RESTAURANT & PUB CELEBRATES OLD HOLLYWOOD

blonde bombshell has arrived on Grinnell Street, stealing the spotlight and above all, entertaining its guests with upscale food at local prices and innovative happy hour specials.

Everything sparkles inside the new Marylin’s Restaurant & Pub, 320 Grinnell St., where old Hollywood glamour is emphasized in the artwork, the crystal-covered mirrors and the giant rhinestones that serve as purse hooks under the sparkly bar.

But the food shines brightest, thanks to the creativity and expertise of Chef Brendan Orr, who wanted to bring his fine dining experience to the more casual, locally priced menu at Marylin’s.

“If we’re doing chicken wings, then we’re doing the best damn chicken wings in town and we’re doing them a little differently,” Orr said while reviewing some of the new restaurant’s most popular items. “Ours come either naked or crispy, and with our own house-made barbecue sauce.”

Orr’s conch chowder is one of the only creamy versions of the island staple on local menus, he said, and it’s rich, savory and filled with tender conch, potatoes, vegetables and flavor.

The mojo pork spring rolls have proven one of the most popular dishes so far, and for good reason. The marinated pork is shredded to order and stuffed inside crispy spring rolls that overflow with a refreshing citrus taste.

“The pork sliders are also a big hit, and our version of chicken and waffles already have found a devoted following,” Orr said, adding that his dish includes layers of chicken made crispy with crushed corn flakes and waffle biscuits with a maple chili glaze.

While appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and salads make up most of Marylin’s menu, there are also plenty of upscale entrees, including grouper, snapper and a sizzling strip steak.

“We know this location has been several restaurants since it was Finnegan’s Wake, but Finnegan’s was really a favorite local spot, whether you came in for lunch, dinner or latenight food and drinks,” said owner Rob Patterson, who also owns Key West Fish & Chips on Angela Street with his parents, Jane and Bob Patterson. “We want to bring back that local loyalty to a place like Finnegan’s Wake, where there’s always people you know, a friendly staff and great food and drinks. And like the bombshell that inspired our name and attitude, we want this place to entertain.

“I built this whole concept around a neon Marilyn Monroe sign that was hanging one day in a store window across the street from Key West Fish & Chips,” Patterson said. “I want to offer the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but with a welcoming, fun and people-friendly atmosphere.”

(No need to point out that the restaurant’s name is spelled differently than the movie star’s. Patterson knows, but wanted to avoid any potential copyright issues.)

Marylin’s just opened on March 7, and is still perfecting its new sound system and stage lighting, but already people have been back more than once.

“I’ve got an amazing staff here, most of whom are former employees of mine from Pinchers in Fort Myers,” he said. “And my best friend, Miguel, sold everything he owns to come down here and work with me. It’s amazing.”

Patterson has plans for live entertainment Friday nights with local performers as well as others from his native Chicago, as well as Nashville, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Houston.

The weekend continues with Saturday’s a Drag featuring live performances by drag cabaret singers Miss Bouvee and Jameson Rabbitt.

Happy hour is offered seven days a week from 1 to 7 p.m. with various drink specials.

“And you’ll get a chip for every drink you order,” Patterson said. “Then Tuesdays is bringyour-chips-in night. You can bring your chips from here or any other place and we’ll give you face value for whatever the chip offers.”

Online ordering is available for pickup orders, while delivery will start in two to three weeks, Patterson said. Lunch is served 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. and a latenight menu is available from 10 p.m. to midnight.

West due to its designation as an Area of Critical State Concern. But Rodriguez withdrew her proposed amendment before the vote on March 10.

Lawmakers and other officials acknowledged during Wednesday’s transportation committee meeting that the bill was expressly written to address Key West voters’ attempt to limit cruise ships in their community.

“It’s no secret that this was because of what was going on in Key West,” Sen. Boyd said at Wednesday’s meeting.

Warren Husband of the Florida Harbor Pilots Association spoke in support of Boyd’s bill, saying, “The state is investing millions in these ports based on economic projections of traffic in those ports. A municipal government that goes rogue could jeopardize those plans.”

Joseph Salzberg, a lobbyist representing the City of Key West, spoke against the bill, saying “The city is opposed to any legislation that attempts to thwart the direction of its voters.

The city has to oppose anything that infringes on a nearly 200-year history of local port operation.”

Key West business owner Danny Hughes flew to Tallahassee to speak in favor of the bill. No one from the Safer Cleaner Ships Committee, which led the Key West voter referendum to limit cruise ships, spoke at the meeting. But opposition did come from the Surfrider Foundation and from lobbyist Josh Aubuchon of Florida Ports for Economic Independence.

The Key West City Commission and the Islamorada Village Council have passed resolutions opposing SB 426 and its identical companion bill in the state House of Representatives, House Bill 267, filed by State Rep. Spencer Roach, a Republican from the Fort Myers area.

WHO SUPPORTS SB 426?

In addition to Hughes, who traveled to Tallahassee to support SB 426, Key West businessmen Ed Swift, CEO of Historic Tours of America, and John Wells, founder of Caribe Nautical ships’ agents, are two outspoken supporters of the port preemption bills.

Both were quoted by FloridaPolitics.com on March 3 as supporting it.

An independently owned website, FloridaPolitics.com quoted Wells and Swift in its coverage of the cruise ship preemption bill on March 3: “A coalition of trade associations and businesses going by the name ‘Keep Florida’s Economy Sailing’ launched (March 2) and called on the Legislature to pass bills that would protect commerce at Florida seaports. “...Keep Florida’s Economy Sailing members say (the bills) would protect seaports from potential economic harm…. “‘Florida’s ports are major economic drivers and have become global hubs for maritime commerce, and Senate Bill 426 (and its counterpart House Bill 267) are a vital protection for our deep-water ports in Florida,’ said John Wells, chair of Caribe Nautical Services and a native Key Wester.

‘Rightfully so, we have heard concerns that Key West’s referendums could open a Pandora’s box that threatens the continued success of our ports.

That is why maritime commerce should be responsibly regulated by the state. I thank Sen. (Jim) Boyd and Rep. (Spencer) Roach for their good bills and look forward to supporting them this session.’

“Other coalition members include the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, Florida Harbor Pilots Association and Historic Tours of America.

“Representatives from each group harped on the importance of passing the preemption,” FloridaPolitics.com writes. “FRLA President Carol Dover said the Key West ordinance threatens the livelihoods of hospitality workers in port areas. Florida Harbor Pilots Association president Ben Borgie said the proposal ‘empowers the ports to operate unencumbered’ by ordinances that ‘make port operations unpredictable and threaten port investments.’

“And Historic Tours of America president Edwin Swift III said the bills could spare his industry further damage as it recovers from the ‘brutal wake-up call’ of the pandemic.”

TAX COLLECTOR’S KEY WEST OFFICE ADDS PASSPORT SERVICES

dd passports to the list of services offered at the Monroe County Tax Collector’s Office. Beginning Monday, March 15, residents can stop by the office inside the Harvey Government Center in Key West to

On Feb. 3, the office became an official passport acceptance facility after receiving final approval from the U.S. departments of Homeland Security and State in Washington, D.C. Newly-elected Tax Collector Sam Steele said the office became the second tax collector’s office in Florida to provide this service.

“It is very exciting,” Steele said, “I have been working with the U.S. Department of State on receiving approval for this high-demand service “I have been since November. Depending on the program's success, Steele said his office will explore the opportunity of implementing the service at the Plantation Key Office in the future.

Customers looking to get a passport at the Key West office must call for an appointment (only applications for original passports will be processed, not renewals). The passport agent will verify the identity of the customer, ensure the proper forms have been filled out correctly and the required documents have been submitted.

The customer will write a check or money order directly to the U.S. Department of State for their fees and a separate payment to the Tax Collector’s Office (check or credit/debit card only). The agent will mail the applications daily to the Department of State via priority mail with a tracking number and the agent has a responsibility to track the package for seven days until it is received at the lockbox.

The Tax Collector’s Office will charge a required $35 processing fee, an optional $20 photograph fee, and an optional $25.50 expedite fee. Steele said that, “with the potential of collecting up to $80.50 per transaction, this is a great way to grow our bottom line, generate more revenue for the county, and provide an essential service for the public. We are now a one-stop-shop for original passports.”

Original passport services will be offered in the Harvey Government Center, located at 1200 Truman Ave., Suite 101.

STATE EDUCATION CHIEF ORDERS KEYS SCHOOLS TO FULLY OPEN SCHOOLS

Schools, students, parents react to state mandate

he state’s top education official last week ordered Florida Keys schools to offer full-time, face-to-face instruction for all students by the end of the month, despite the school district’s and the health department’s continuing concerns about community spread of the COVID virus.

In his directive, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran indicated that the Monroe County School District will face “significant financial penalties if we do not comply with his order,” Superintendent Theresa Axford told the county’s teachers in an internal email on Saturday.

In her email, Axford apologizes to teachers.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write to you this afternoon,” Axford writes. “I received a letter from the Commissioner of Education on Friday (March 5) at 5:09 p.m., which requires us to offer five days of in-person instruction to all students who want it.

“We have been aware of a group of parents who have been pursuing this five-day, in-person option, but we believed that we were working with them to resolve their concerns. They apparently have been calling the commissioner on a regular basis to complain.

“We were using an A/B day based on our health department’s recommendation that our community spread of the virus was too high to bring all of our students in. Apparently the commissioner does not believe that the level of community spread of the virus is an acceptable reason to not offer five days of face to face instruction. He has sent a clear directive that indicates there will be significant financial penalties if we do not comply with his order.”

School board members respond The mandate confounded Monroe County school board members Sue Woltanski, John Dick and Bobby Highsmith, especially as it concerns advice from the state Department of Health in Monroe County. “(The state) acts like we did something wrong, but in their executive order it states that school districts should be open for every student five days a week ... with the approval of the local health department,” board chair Dick said. “We still have concerns from the local health department. How are they alleviated now? But to act like we did something wrong is incorrect. I will challenge them at any time.”

Woltanski said the state wanted schools open “subject to the advice of local health departments. Now the commissioner of education wants us to ignore our health department’s advice.”

The entire board said if all the students elect to come back to school for five days a week of instruction, it will be impossible to maintain social distance in the classroom or on buses.

“I am pleased for those students and families that are in need of our schools five days a week. I also understand that this mandate is not necessarily what is best for everyone in the district,” board member Mindy Conn said.

She also said the full reopening of school will help improve the “high number of absenteeism … and improve student grades and prepare for testing season.”

Board member Andy Griffiths, however, said the Keys’ rate of attendance is better than the state average. He called the state’s mandate, and a corresponding reduction in funding if the district doesn’t comply, a threat. “They can legally withhold funding. We could go it alone; we wouldn’t have to listen to them. But we are going to do what they say because they have what we want,” Griffiths said. At a March 9 school board meeting, Griffiths asked the board attorney to explore the possibility of the school district withdrawing from the Florida Education Finance Program, as the state’s school funding formula punishes Monroe County, whose high property values and corresponding property taxes fund the lion’s share of its schools, not state money.

“Our students have been suffering and failing at unprecedented levels,” said board member Bobby Highsmith.

“Perhaps if we found a more effective way to implement the A/B schedule, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

Teachers respond The Keys Weekly spoke to two teachers in the Middle Keys, both of whom declined to be identified. A high school teacher said the implications of the state mandate for Keys schools change minute to minute. Mostly, though, the teacher said, it will affect middle school students.

“They have the smaller classrooms and more parents are eager to send their middle school students back to school. I don’t think we will see as many high schoolers return to five days a week in the classroom.”

A middle school teacher said colleagues have legitimate concerns, especially due to the vaccination rollout. The teacher added that she is traveling to the mainland this week for her first shot.

If Keys students return to fully open schools after spring break on March 29, that only means five or six remaining weeks of school for seniors, who typically end the school year first in midMay. Coral Shores High School teacher Jennifer Webb recently received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the CVS in Homestead last weekend.

“I am so excited that vaccines finally became available for all teachers. I will feel so much more comfortable being at school every day after I get my second shot and it takes full effect,” Webb said.

Parents, students respond Mandy Rodriguez has two kids in the school system. He’s delighted they are being invited back full time.

“I wasn’t a super A student,” said the Dolphin Research Center leader. “For those like me, going to school every day is a challenge.” And while the kids are doing their work on the virtual days, many are cutting corners. “Are you going to spend eight hours on it, or are you going to do it as fast as possible?”

The district is conducting a three-question survey right now. Parents are asked to input their school; whether the child will return to school, stay on the A/B schedule, or stay completely virtual; and whether the student needs transportation to school.

Although Rodriguez is able to bring his children to the Dolphin Research Center, not every parent can do that. “So, do the kids stay home alone? It’s a difficult thing to balance.”

Jordan Rodriguez is a senior at Marathon High School. He’s not enthused about a five-day schedule, but sees the advantage.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t like going to school every day. But it will help me with my academics.

Mostly likely I will go every day, but I am not looking forward to it,” he said.

How many have been infected at schools?

Since August 2020, when the Monroe County School District started keeping track, 197 students have reSuperintendent portedly tested positive Theresa Axford for COVID-19, as well as 33 teachers and 39 staff members. School officials have said there has been a recent outbreak among bus drivers in the Middle and Upper Keys, further complicating matters, as officials have to revise the bus routes to enable every child to come to school five days a week. Since Feb. 25, 28 new infections have been reported among students, staff and teachers.

Axford added that even if staff members haven’t tested positive, they often have to quarantine if they are found to have been in close contact with someone who tests positive.

Teachers and vaccines Superintendent Axford told the Keys Weekly that as of Tuesday, March 9, she believed “between 80 and 100 school teachers in the Keys have been vaccinated,” but she added that the number increases exponentially each day as teachers pursue shots wherever they can get them.

BOCCE IS BACK IN KEY WEST — BUT WITH SOME CHANGES

asked men hefted coolers from car trunks and called insulting greetings across the parking lot the way guys do.

With rosters finalized and last-minute calls made to missing teammates, the hollow thud of a heavy ball against a wooden rail Thursday evening at the foot of White Street offered a strangely reassuring sound that foretold a return to normalcy — eventually.

Bocce is back. And in Key West, that’s a big deal.

For all of my 23 years in Key West, I’ve driven past the bocce courts at least two evenings a week, glancing always at the collection of people either rolling a heavy ball down a packed dirt court, or or watching someone else do it. They hunch over in their own unique stance. They hold the ball with one or both hands and send it rolling down the 91-foot court, often contorting their body in a futile attempt to will the ball in a certain direction. Cheers erupt. Fireball shots are shared. The games continue, each team playing three matches a night.

I knew bocce was big in Key West, but I hadn’t known how welcoming and decidedly unintimidating its players would be.

They were always the “cool kids,” I had thought for two decades, more than a little daunted by the long-time players and the learned bocce expertise. Then I spoke with a bunch of the players and instantly amended my assessment.

“Oh God, you were intimidated by THIS?” laughed Neil Curran, whose Smokin’ Mad Dashers team “is almost always in last place.”

“Bocce is crazy social and super friendly.

Let’s be honest, it’s a bunch of degenerates.

Look at us.”

And I did. Then I looked at the league’s website. How could any organization with team names like The Rolling Stoners, Mission Imbocceball, Higher Primates and Deboccery be anything but pretty damn fun?

The Southernmost Bocce League, which has been around for more than 25 years and numbers about 500 members, resumed play this week after nearly a year’s hiatus due to COVID. “Finally, something to do again on Thursday night,” said Kaitlin O’Connell, a Key West teacher whose team, the Smokin’ Mad Dashers, plays every Thursday evening. “For me it’s a sort of stress relief. I love the sense of community here and everyone is really welcoming and helpful.”

“The league uses the bocce courts Monday through Thursday evenings. Everything bocce starts at 6:30,” said league vice president Shane Briening, who’s been playing for 10 to 12 years on the Mission Imbocceball team. “Each team has a designated night that they’ll always play. Your night is your night and people take pride in ‘their’ night.

Each team has maybe six to eight players, but only four play at a time, with two members from each team standing on opposite ends of the court.”

“The city agreed to let us resume play as long as we follow their COVID guidelines,” said league president Garth Holtkamp, who told all players on Thursday evening that masks are a must and the league must leave an empty court between each game to allow for social distancing. “We can’t screw this up.”

Holtkamp added that the Southernmost Bocce League is one of the city’s largest nonprofits, and each year the league donates money it raises to local charities.

Though COVID continues, and restrictions remain in place, bocce has gotten the ball rolling once again. Welcome back.

A

full moon evanesced like a studio prop behind Nick Norman as he sat on stage at Hawks Cay Resort in late February. It was the second “Keys to the Country’’ concert for the resort, which highlighted country megastar Lee Brice, along with names like Rob Hatch, Rebecca Lynn Howard and Abby Anderson — all showcasing their musical deity beneath the canopy of a Keys-lit sky.

In the distance, cars passed over Toms Harbor Cut Bridge, unaware of the star power collected on the bright stage — with performers and songwriters responsible for more than a dozen No. 1 hits.

Yet for Nick Norman, the event evoked a rawness of emotion. It was the culmination of his childhood friends — some, like Lee Brice, who hit stardom in the music industry after cutting his teeth with Nick performing at summer camps in their native South Carolina — and others, like Rob Hatch, who has worked with every legend in the business and firmly believes Nick has what it takes to take the next leap in his career. And it was a celebration, not just for Nick’s new album scheduled to launch days later, but for his perseverance — and the friends who still stood by his side.

Much like the hordes of vehicle lights making their way south on U.S 1 that evening, Norman’s path had led him 16 years earlier to Key West, where he’s worked the music scene on every stage from small bars to sold-out crowds at the Key West Coffee Butler Amphitheater.

And on March 5, his self-titled album, well over a year in waiting, launched across America — hitting No. 5 in iTunes total album sales the day of the release. In fact, on that day, Nick’s name appeared on that list between Chris Stapleton and Willie Nelson, something many believe will become a common occurrence in the weeks to come.

“I’m just proud of Nick,” said legendary songwriter Rob Hatch, who along with Lee Brice, Elisa Hoffman and Derek and Kristi Hutchins created Pump House Records and signed Norman as the staple of their label. “He didn’t need Nashville. Nick tried that and for whatever reason, he had the vision to come to Key West. And to be honest, Pump House was started about Nick.”

Hatch, who’s written No. 1 songs for stars that include Faith Hill, Lee Brice and FloridaGeorgia Line, wrote several songs on Norman’s new album, but says Nick’s Key West experience is responsible for the individuality it takes to set one apart in a crowded field of rising stars.

“All of his songs are very much a product of Key West,” said Hatch, who says even with Norman’s success, he hopes he remains in the Southernmost City. “I would never want him to leave down there. It’s his point of view and his

perspective. It’s part of him. When he tells his stories, they’re not Nashville stories. They’re not South Carolina stories. It’s his story in Key West.”

Lee Brice, who agrees with Hatch, doesn’t believe Nick’s music necessarily has to fit any genre or style, as he claims his childhood friend’s sound transcends most stereotypes.

“Nick’s music could be so many different things,” said Brice. “It could be folk, it could be pop, it could be adult contemporary, country and there are so many different versions of all of his stuff. We’re still just devising how we want to roll everything out. Maybe each of his songs has a different home. It just depends on where they land.”

Brice says he sees Nick’s music the way he has always dreamed a catalog of songs should be — that art should not be boxed into a genre, but something everyone should simply want to listen to and enjoy.

“Look, I’m a country dude and I write country music, but I also write all kinds of music,” Brice said. “So, for me it’s ‘why does it always have to be a genre?’ You don’t have to categorize it. Just listen to it.”

Norman, who recorded the album at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Studio in Nashville last summer, says writing and recording with childhood friends like Brice and Hatch has “saved me as far as the original side of my music.” And while Norman remains a product of Key West, he claims the occasional change of scenery, along with the support and belief his friends have poured into his career, has led to a creative revival in his approach to music.

“Rob and Lee have been behind me like a rooting parent for this entire journey,” said Norman. “When you see and feel someone’s belief in you, whether it’s music or something else, it gets your focus back. It’s not just me trying to live this pipe dream, but I have someone else

behind me believing in the same thing, and that’s a powerful thing to have for anyone trying to succeed.”

The release of Norman’s record, which was completed in the summer of 2020, was originally designed around a promotional tour with occasional stints alongside Lee Brice that included massive venues and larger audiences.

However, the pandemic had other plans for the album’s release. But Norman insisted on patiently waiting for what he felt was most important to his music, a seemingly spiritual-like connection to his audiences.

“We made a real record and we made real music,” Norman said. “I wanted for us to focus on that. So instead of scurrying around and forcing it, we made a great record and we’re getting it out now.”

Hatch echoed the significance of Norman’s ability to move a crowd. He, Norman and Brice have been touring with one another for over 20 years and Hatch says the intimacy of live crowds fits Norman’s comfort zone.

“The intimacy of an audience allows Nick to tell his story from his point of view,” said Hatch.

“I watched him sing a show in Mexico and none of the crowd spoke English. But Nick just stole the show. They loved him and without knowing the words, they still sang along with him.

We put this record together so the world could, too.”

KEYS FAMILY CREATES SUICIDE PREVENTION FUND Turning a personal tragedy into an opportunity to help others, a long-time Keys family has created the Aaron Davis Broadaway Suicide Prevention Fund at the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK).

Aaron’s grandparents, Billy and Miki Davis, created the new fund to support local nonprofits that provide suicide prevention and training programs and offer assistance to those in need of mental health support.

During his life, Aaron often spent time in the Keys visiting his grandparents and volunteering.

“Setting up the fund was a way to make a difference and aid others, raise awareness for the alarming number of suicides that occur each year, and allow Aaron’s memory to live on following his death late last year,” Billy Davis said. “Helping others is the best way to honor Aaron.”

KEY WEST AUTHOR DISCUSSES HER NEW YOUNG-ADULT BOOK, ‘YELL OUT LOUD’

ocal author and Key West notable Hays Blinckmann rarely holds anything back.

For those who know her, her quirky sense of humor and honest remarks have made her an endearing fixture in the local community of Key West characters. And while Blinckmann has mastered most anything she’s touched during more than two decades of Key West residency, including her proudest achievements as a wife and mother of two boys, her success as an author is expanding her reach beyond all boundaries.

Blinckmann has never been afraid of who she is, a quality that lends a raw and honest approach to her first two adult novels. Her unique blend of emotional insight and covert humor embraces what she refers to as an “invitation for people to enjoy dysfunctional families at their finest.”

But recently, the pandemic set in motion Blinckmann’s first young-adult novel, “Yell Out Loud,” which marks her third book in the past five years.

“Yell Out Loud” was inspired by the solitude and challenges that children and parents have faced during the social limitations of a pandemic.

“I observed my two boys and others roll with the punches of COVID,” Blinckmann said.

“There were no sleepovers, birthday parties, trips of any kind, but they still went on with their childhoods — albeit through too much technology.”

As Blinckmann releases the emotionally uplifting journey of “Yell Out Loud,” the Keys Weekly’s Britt Myers caught up with her to discuss the book, her time spent working at the Keys Weekly newspapers (and whether certain characters were fashioned after a few of her former co-workers). We also learned how she managed to get banned from Twitter after just seven tweets.

With her own robust humor and brooding honesty, Blinckmann did not disappoint — nor does her latest offering, “Yell Out Loud.”

KW: OK, let’s get to it. How did you get kicked off Twitter after your seventh Tweet?

HB: (laughing) You’re not going to let that one go, are you? I posted a pic of Sumo wrestlers and one political comment and I was done! Evidently it was too much or Jack Dorsey just hates me.

KW: First things first. In “Yell Out Loud” the character Carl is a “know-it-all” newspaper owner for whom the book’s mother works. You even write

that he smells like old coffee. They say if the shoe fits you have to wear it … but do I, I mean does he, have to smell like old coffee?

HB: OK, “old coffee” came from my old English teacher (laughing). But as for the mom character and her relationship with Carl, my kids watched me work as a journalist with no experience really, and becoming that person in just four years.

I think it was about showing the boys how to use their voice, vie for themselves and champion themselves.

KW: The story takes place at the conclusion of a major war during which everyone had been locked down, similar to the COVID pandemic.

What made you choose war as a major theme?

HB: I didn’t want to say pandemic, so I set it after a war with similarities. No birthday parties, no trips and no sleepovers for the boys. During the war, the kids hadn’t seen each other. So as it ended they were able to get back to their friends and back to being kids again.

KW: But the kids in the book are not the same after the war. There is a coming-of-age element based on what they’ve seen and experienced.

Do you believe this generation of kids has changed due to the pandemic?

HB: Yes. My philosophy is kids bounce, but don’t break. The war setting Is a way to show how they adapt to and learn from it, just as our kids have adapted and learned from no birthday parties, no vacations and online schooling. As a parent, your kids not experiencing these things is heartbreaking, but I was thankful it didn’t break them.

KW: You also weave in the two other major themes of time and chess. What did these themes symbolize for you as you developed the story?

HB: First, “The Queen’s Gambit”came out after I wrote those parts, so I was on point and on trend (laughing). But chess is one of the most challenging games and I don’t want kids to shy away from challenging games, which is why I purposely left electronics out of the story. Chess is old-school. Young and old can play and it’s a great confidence boost for kids. Plus I wanted to pick something that would bring generations together.

KW: And why is time an important recurring theme in the book?

HB: This past year has been about time. This past year, people felt like they lost time. It’s a huge element in our existence. The character of Mr. Klopp wants to stop time. We all do, but

we can’t always get stuck in time. Klopp fixes clocks, but more importantly he is an older man teaching a younger man as they find a common ground and a new skill. My own boys are interested in fixing things and how things work.

So again, it’s putting electronics aside, learning a skill and using your brain.

KW: Would you call the novel a coming-of-age story and did any stories or books from your youth inspire the idea of the treasure hunt the kids embark on later in “Yell Out Loud?”

HB: It’s a little bit coming-of-age. It’s about how kids learn to find confidence they didn’t know they had. And growing up, I loved the movies “Stand by Me” and “The Goonies!” In “Goonies” they go through a cave and look for treasure, so I wanted to give the kids in my book that moment — that something impossible is actually possible.

KW: Without offering spoilers, what do you hope readers take away from the book?

HB: People hurt. I’ve lost Tosh (father figure and best friend) and my mom in a matter of years. It’s a strange lesson to teach a child about coming to grips with certain parts of life. But they can understand it better if we are all more forgiving and less reactive — and when we just teach compassion, to not leave people out and not take others at face value.

KW: And how do you think the pandemic has taught children those lessons?

HB: For the past year we’ve been telling our kids it won’t always be like this. As adults we know life changes and things get better. But kids don’t have that experience or perspective. That’s the message, to keep moving forward.

KW: This is your third book and you’re already working on another. As the books become more and more popular, I have to ask, what made you decide to start writing novels at this stage of your life and what’s next?

HB: Well, first I was raising small children and then working for the newspaper. Being a mom, a journalist, a wife … it was so hard to put all of my eggs in one basket. Now I’m not doing that grind. I’m almost 50 and it’s now or never. It’s a dream I’ve had my whole life that was put on the back burner and now I’m going for it. I’m putting the investment in myself and if for anything else, it’s to show my kids.

I

’d say I can’t tell you the last time I saw a common grackle, but that wouldn’t be true. I saw one last Saturday while riding my bike down Seidenberg Avenue.

But I honestly can’t tell you the last time I’d seen one before that. September, maybe? October?

It’s always difficult to notice when a bird leaves the landscape. They don’t say anything; they don’t even give you the nod. They step off a branch and head toward the horizon sans fanfare. All this stuff about whether it should be called a French Exit or an Irish Goodbye? Feh. Birds have been leaving the party without a farewell since before we had written language. It should be the Avian Arrivederci.

It’s easier to notice when birds re-appear, though, much as when new people arrive at a party. We get two kinds of grackles in Key West – boat-tailed grackles and common grackles.

The males of the two species are largish, unadorned, nearly black songbirds with longish bills and longish tails. The boattails are actually bigger and have a slightly longer tail, but the distinction is difficult to parse in the field. Female common grackles also look pretty much the same. The female boat-tails, though, are tobacco brown and therefore stick out.

As grackles tend to travel in small flocks, if you see some brown ones mixed in with the blackish ones, you know they’re boat-tails. If you don’t, they are most likely common grackles.

But you don’t have to worry much about such ID problems in Key West. We only have a small posse of about 20 of boat-tailed grackles here. I used to see them down by the ferry terminal, but now I see them more often around the Wendy’s in Searstown. (If you want to see a lot of boat-tails, get out of your car in any fast-food or gas station parking lot in Florida City.)

Common grackles, though? They’ll be all over your neighborhood in a couple weeks, dozens of them, making a ruckus, foraging for food and giving a loud, un-melodic call that always sounds to me like a squeaky swing set.

The birds we see here are members of a subspecies whose range stretches north to North Carolina and west to Louisiana.

Back in the day they were considered their own species, the Florida grackle, and it’s fun to call them that sometimes, if only to convince other birders you’re using a really out-of-date field guide.

The interesting thing about Florida grackles, though, is they don’t really migrate, or at least the vast majority don’t. The only ones that really do are the ones in the Keys, disappearing as they do in September and October (I think) and reappearing in early March every year.

Why do our common grackles migrate? Where do they go? It would take a small team of biologists, a modest budget and some satellite trackers to figure it all out. Most likely they just go up to the mainland. (Common grackles are seen year round in Homestead.)

As most birds migrate to have access to a steady supply of food, it’s possible something here disappears from their diet.

But also, nobody really worries about it because, well, they’re grackles. For some reason they don’t get a lot of love, even in the bird world.

Part of it may be their ubiquity and their success. Common grackles are one of the species that has thrived with human development, their population growing as forests in North America were replaced with farmland and suburbs, booming so much so that they are now considered an agricultural pest in many places.

Part of it may be their unspectacularness and the fact that they look like smaller, less-handsome crows. Which may not be fair, because if you really look at them, they are not so much a dull blackish as a deep iridescent purple, with a yellow pinpoint of an eye that’s really quite something.

Their reputation is low enough to have made them a punchline on an episode of “Brooklyn 99,” with characters repeatedly using the insult, “You grackle,” which worked very well in Andre Braugher’s gravitas-laden baritone. (It was the second funniest bird-related joke in the episode, after, “Apparently he’s very into birdwatching, so talking to a woman should blow his mind.”)

Trash-talking common grackles seems to be a long-standing tradition. I was reading about them in the weighty tome “Birds of America,” published in 1917 and updated in 1936. It started well, with the author stating that the grackle “presents a fine appearance as he walks, indeed, struts, about on the deepening green of lawns.”

But then they write, “A mistake which this grackle makes is in trying to sing.”

They then pile on with accusations of cannibalism and nestrobbing, and talking about how all the robins, bluebirds, thrushes and sparrows hate them, and adding, “when the birds unite in giving one of their number a bad name, we may be tolerably certain that he deserves it.” Which seems a bit much. Eating a member of a different species is not cannibalism, and the egg predation is totally overblown. (It’s, like, 1 percent of their diet.)

All this has started to make me think of common grackles as underdogs, and I’m going to try and start fresh with them this year, show a little more interest, take a kinder look at what they’re up to, maybe hire them a publicist.

LOST BEACH & ISLAND FARM OFFER SWEET ESCAPE

A

t the end of a dirt road on the edge of Stock Island, bees buzz and bonfires burn.

Island Farm at Lost Beach, previously known only to lucky kayakers and a few locals, is finally opening its shores and sharing the sweetness through Fire + Honey, a reservation-only weekend bonfire series.

“It transports you,” said owner Eric Dickstein. “It’s funny because we meet people all the time. And they’re just like, ‘We never knew this existed.’”

Dickstein, a New Jersey native, purchased the island property 15 years ago with the intention of raising bees and ultimately creating a community-focused agriculture initiative. At present, Island Farm is home to some hundred hives, all producing mangrove honey, and spring is high time for production. “The bees get busy when the plants start to flower. We have black, white and red mangroves. Mangrove honey is notably some of the best. Because the mangroves bloom at different times we get an extended season,” Dickstein said. The Island Farm Honey produced on site is offered to bonfire guests as a welcome addition to a traditional s’more.

Island Farm deals equally in sweetness and sustainability. An off-the grid property, nothing goes to waste. “There’s no ocean debris that leaves the island. We’re even using the seaweed. It dries, composts and helps with soil nitrogen. It’s a natural fertilizer. We use everything. The ash from the bonfires helps with the alkalinity in the soil and reduces bugs around the hives. Everything is a complete system,” Dickstein said.

The model of cyclical support is mirrored in the Fire + Honey bonfire events. The weekend revelry acquaints the community with Island Farm and subsidizes the high cost of farming. “The agricultural side is very expensive.

These events get people to come out, try the honey and get to know us while getting out into nature. It also supports our beekeeping and planned growth.”

Restoring the natural beauty of Lost Beach was a labor of love for Dickstein and his crew.

“We’ve removed about 60 Dumpsters of garbage and plastic so far.” The resulting postcardpretty appearance inspired the name Lost Beach. “We call it the Lost Beach because it was lost and now we’ve found it.”

The finding couldn’t have come at a better time. “There’s a big movement in the state towards agrotourism. This is the perfect spot for that and with COVID restrictions, the community needs more outdoor things like this so we’re not just a one-horse town.”

Dickstein developed the Fire + Honey concept in collaboration with Jenn Stefanacci, owner and queen bee of downtown libation staple 22&Co. “Jenn is an amazing overachiever.

She made the time and shared the vision. She’s been the most passionate person I’ve met. She just gets it.”

The getting was easy for Stefanacci, who saw the property’s unique potential. “I moved to Key West 11 years ago and now I have to leave to relax. Out here I can do that. It’s different than anywhere in the Keys. Lost Beach brings me back to why I moved here in the first place.”

Appreciation for the Keys community is reflected in event pricing, offering locals a discounted rate. “Locals keep this island going, after hurricanes, during September, you have to remember who the heart and soul of this island is,” said Stefanacci.

Bonfires are just the beginning for Lost Beach. It’s BYOB for now, but Dickstein will soon partner with Keys Meads to create an outdoor mead garden and tasting area. The collaboration stands to benefit both businesses, with Dickstein providing the honey used in mead production. In the immediate future is a farm store aptly named The Sweet Spot, and beginning next month, a weekend market.

Dickstein encourages artists and vendors interested in being a part of the market to apply via the Island Farm website.

Also in the works for Island Farm at Lost Beach: farm to table dinners, beekeeping workshops and, come summertime, a farm camp to get kids excited about agriculture. “We want to give parents a chance to bring their kids somewhere they can be safe, have fun outside, unplug and get back to their roots.”

While expansion ideas abound, simplicity is Dickstein’s ultimate aim. “What we’re trying to do is simple — chairs, fire, honey. I think people appreciate that. We let nature do the work.”

For Dickstein, community is key and local volunteers are not only welcome but wholly necessary. “It’s a big piece of property, and there’s a lot we want to do. It’s going to take a lot of hands. The idea is to make the farm and the beach accessible to more people. Hopefully they’ll ask, ‘How can we help? How can we get involved?’”

Visitors and volunteers alike are offered the gift of ancient camaraderie. “Something special happens when people are sitting around a fire.

THE STORY OF DR. HENRY PERRINE From arsenic poisoning to a move to Indian Key

r. Henry Perrine never fully recovered from the accidental arsenic poisoning. He felt fine during warmer months, but once the seasonal temperatures began to drop, his body would break down. Accepting the position of consul representing the United States on the tropical Yucatan Peninsula became a health-based decision. The 10-year assignment began in 1827.

The doctor’s primary responsibility at Tabasco, Mexico, was checking cargo being imported from, or exported to, the United States. His schedule offered ample time to explore the local villages, where he provided whatever medical assistance he could. He discovered that much of the medicine used was the product of local plants. Once the villagers understood the doctor’s interest in the local botanicals’ healing nature, and his willingness to help the villagers in need, they began to bring him samples. This root soothes stomach pains. This leaf is used for aches.

This leaf is used for fever.

The villagers surprised him one day with a colorful parrot. The bird had been taught to say, “Dr. Perrine, Dr. Perrine!” Tickled by their gift, he sent the parrot home to his family in New York so they could hear his name echoing through their house in his absence, “Dr. Perrine, Dr. Perrine!”

When the parrot arrived, the family wanted to give it an appropriately colorful red cage. The parrot, as the birds do, chewed and chewed on the cage’s lead-based painted bars. On the third day in its new home, the parrot fell to the cage’s floor and, as it convulsed, cried out, “Dr. Perrine, Dr. Perrine!”

Meanwhile, President John Quincy Adams sent a letter to each of the newly appointed consuls, requesting they document any plants that might prove beneficial to the United States.

Perrine was the one in 100 consuls who took the directive seriously. Not only did Perrine compile copious notes

about the local flora, he noted seasonal weather patterns. He also shipped seeds and samples to horticulturally-minded friends in America, including the Florida Territory’s John Dubose and Charles Howe. Dubose, the lighthouse keeper at Key Biscayne’s Cape Florida Lighthouse, was sent more than 100 boxes of botanical samples.

In 1833, Perrine wrote, “We have testimony of the healthiness of Cape Florida in its most unequivocal form. The family These are the children of Henry Perrine: Sarah, Henry Jr., and Hester. The family would take up residence on Indian of J. Dubose, consisting of Key in 1838. CONTRIBUTED eleven whites, and several negroes, has not had a case of sickness during the last seven years. The tenderest and most productive vegetables of the tropics are flourishing under his care. …

The harbor at the cape … is easily accessible and a voyage to and from the northern states can be made easily. … Humanity requires that Key Biscayne should be made an available resort as soon as possible. … At Cape Florida, an association might be readily formed with a capital of a hundred thousand dollars which would furnish the buildings, gardens, and other conveniences requisite for the most squeamish visitor, and keep a packet running every month with passengers and effects from the north. The most luxurious accommodations could be profitably afforded at half the price paid in Havana.”

As he had with Dubose at Cape Florida, Perrine sent crates of botanical samples to Charles Howe at Indian Key. A hurricane in 1835 destroyed many of Perrine’s plants at Cape Florida. At Indian Key, the damage was estimated at $500 and included the destruction of citrus trees. The 1835 storm is particularly notable because it became the first hurricane recorded at Key West. Two additional events of note occurred in 1835. Halley’s Comet burned a fiery line across the Florida Keys’ skies, and hostile engagements sparked the second escalation of the Seminole War. At the end of his 10-year post at Tabasco, Perrine returned to New York to be with his family. In December 1838, Perrine, his wife Ann, and their three children, Hester, Sarah, and Henry Jr., set sail for Indian Key. They arrived on Christmas Day. In a memoir written by Hester Perrine, she recorded her first impression of Indian Key: “I cannot forget our delight on first seeing this beautiful little island of only 12 acres. It was truly a ‘Gem of the Ocean.’ The trees were many of them covered with morning glories of all colors, while the waving palms, tamarinds, papaws, guavas, seaside grape trees and many others too numerous to mention made it seem to us like fairy land, coming as we did from the midst of snow and ice.”

OBITUARY

Scott Phipps Scott Pearce Phipps passed away on Feb. 19, 2021 at Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami.

Born in Greensboro, North Carolina on Feb. 12, 1957, he was the first child of Hilary and Fred Phipps. Scott grew up in Dania as his family moved to Florida when he was just 4 years old. Growing up in such proximity to the ocean fit Scott like a glove, as he demonstrated at an early age that he was most in his element when immersed in the elements of nature, most specifically the irresistible draws of fishing and the ocean.

Scott’s second defining characteristic was his intellectual horsepower. The fact that he excelled in the classroom with relative ease was a source of envy and perhaps even a little jealousy from friends and siblings alike. He graduated with honors from South Broward High School in 1975, and his overall academic performance led to multiple offers to continue his formal education at a number of attractive institutions of higher learning. However, Scott’s heart was leading him down a different path.

Another of his prominent characteristics was a passion to help and provide care for people, regardless of how challenging or dangerous the environment. This was evident from his early days as a lifeguard, and is what led him to become a firefighter for the City of Dania, an EMT with the City of Hollywood and ultimately to go back to school at Broward Community College to earn a degree in nursing.

His pursuit of the ideal combination of location and the opportunity for professional growth eventually led Scott to the Florida Keys, where he was able to live on his sailboat and work as an emergency room nurse at Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon. As if that work environment wasn’t intense enough, he then became a flight nurse on Monroe County’s Trauma Star helicopter. The intellectual and physical demands of this position, along with the nature of the patients he cared for, made it a logical culmination of his professional life’s work.

The most important of Scott’s gifts, however, was his capacity for compassion, kindness and love. Unfortunately, true authenticity has become a rare commodity in recent years, but Scott had it in abundance. To meet Scott was to like him, and to know him was to love him. It was fitting that when he followed his heart to Marathon, it was there that he met the love of his life, Donna Angrick, whom he married on Feb. 12, 2013 and in whom he finally found his soulmate.

In addition to his wife Donna, Scott is both survived, and will be dearly missed, by his mother Hilary, brother Jeffrey, sister Leslie Kern, nieces Skylar Phipps, Lindsey Kern, Melissa Kern Griswold, nephews Brendan Kern, Dalton Kern, mother-in-law Phyllis Angrick, father-in-law Al Murphy and brother-in-law Allen Kern. However, Scott will always have a special place in the hearts of all those who were blessed to have known him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida.

A celebration of Life will be held at the American Legion Post 154, Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 1 p.m.

On March 29, parents of 6-12th grade students in Monroe County School District will be given the OPTION of returning to school five days a week. Parents are asked to complete a survey, as soon as possible, identifying their choice. Parents may choose to continue in the current A/B schedule.

Please understand, in most classrooms, adequate social distancing will not be possible if all students return five days a week, though we will do our best to provide as much social distancing as possible. If adequate social distancing were possible with full student populations, our schools would already be open.

Monroe’s rate of COVID cases per 100,000 people remains in the CDC’s “High Transmission Red” level, warranting strict mitigation efforts. It is this data, concern about more new infectious variants and recent evidence of transmission WITHIN our Monroe classrooms, that led our local health department to continue to advise the A/B schedule, which allows appropriate social distancing.

If your child is struggling in the A/B system, I truly hope their return to five days will be successful. Everyone else should understand that the choice to remain on the A/B schedule will help keep everyone safer.

Without the ability to social distance, expect more quarantines, more classroom closures and possibly building closures, when cases occur on our campuses. Understand that the return is mandated by the state, but does not comply with CDC guidance nor come with the advice of our local department of health.

Monroe County currently has the lowest pediatric positivity rate and the lowest overall death rate in the state. By utilizing an A/B day schedule for our 6-12th grade students, we have been able to bring 96% of our students back to campus.

All parents of 6-12th grade students should respond to the district survey so our schools can plan for the return. For the sake of our students, teachers and entire community, please choose wisely.

R

oughly a year ago marked the beginnings of COVID-19 in the Keys. The course of the year drastically changed, with a checkpoint that kept tourists away for some time, a mask mandate and capacity limits inside businesses.

School closures forced a full-on virtual instruction format for a time.

In-person class resumed eventually, with K-5 students returning to school full-time. Meanwhile, some middleand high-school students enter the classroom on A days while others go on B days.

With a recent order by Florida’s education commissioner, parents who want their children back full-time will have that choice available (see page 4

response via their mobile response team, said Becky Herrin, communications coordinator for the district’s COVID-19 response.

Dunleavy has spent her career working with the young population as a licensed mental health counselor.

Along with the coronavirus, Dunleavy notes that high crisis time usually occurs between spring break and the end of the year.

“It’s also testing season. I think people get anxious,” she said. “There are a lot of factors in play affecting their anxiety and stress levels, and of course that’s going to have an impact on their health.”

Dr. Stan Zuba said there’s been a bit of an increase in cases of anxiety and stress in children and adolescents related to isolation and lack of contact

Despite the developments that look to get students back in the classroom full time, grade struggles and motivation problems have been apparent among the student population.

Health officials usually assess how a community is affected following natural disasters like hurricanes. Studies have shown that chronic depression and anxiety last long after the event.

Look no further than Hurricane Irma.

Working closely with Monroe County schools is Guidance Care Center, which provides services from counseling to therapy for students inside school facilities. Maureen Dunleavy, area director for the Guidance Care Center, said they are seeing more anxiety and depression among students and adults due to less social interaction among classmates and friends.

“And that is also a predictive factor when we look at suicide risk and mental health,” she said. “Not only are we having more anxiety and more depression, but we’ve had less social connectedness because they’ve been on A/B, for the older kids. They’ve been away from doing social things, and that also has had an impact. It’s almost like a double whammy.”

Sixteen school-based counselors and therapists employed by the Guidance Care Center are in Monroe County Schools providing support to families and students. In collaboration with school counselors and school social workers, they provide crisis

with others. Zuba said the cases are typically referred to Guidance Care Center or private counselors for further help.

“We try to give them those referrals as needed,” he said. “We also try to get them to exercise as much as possible. Exercise and moving around does help.”

Zuba said he and other pediatricians are following guidance put out by the American Academy of Pediatrics on supporting emotional and behavioral needs of children, adolescents and families during the pandemic. The report, which came out in January, states that older children and adolescents may find the social isolation related to the pandemic overwhelming, as socializing with peers is a mainstay of child and adolescent development.

“School-aged and older children have had their social needs disrupted significantly,” the report reads. “They also may have heightened fears about the virus, which can result in exagger-

ated estimation of risk and excessive worry about themselves or their families, especially in families of essential workers.”

Caregivers should be mindful of their sense of loneliness and uncertainty as they try to develop self-efficacy and confidence in their position in the world, the report says.

In many cases, quarantine increased the time that families are together. Woody Hanford, program manager with the juvenile division for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, acknowledged that it partly explains the drop in juvenile crime. Twelve kids are currently in the juvenile program. Of those, six were the result of incidents in school.

“Kids were home and forced to sit down and talk with their parents and have dinner with their parents,” said Hanford, who has spent his life working with juveniles. “They weren’t running off getting in trouble. During COVID, the family returned in some cases.”

And even with kids confined to the home for the better part of last year, Hanford said the division did not see any noticeable increase in domestic violence arrests. Hanford also attributes drops in juvenile delinquency to the school resource officer program.

Dunleavy said she is offering a 60-minute webinar on Friday, March 12 at 12:30 p.m. that delves into everything from suicide prevention to the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and coping methods.

“I’m doing this training in order to help people get the skills to be able to know what to watch for and to know when they need assistance,” she said.

he Key West Conchs headed up the road to Marathon High School for a recent track and field match-up. The COVID pandemic has prompted changes to both schools’ regular season schedules.

“It’s great to have the athletes back since we had a shortened season last year,” said Key West’s head track coach Dave Perkins. “I think they all are excited to be back to normalcy.”

“It’s great to be able to host meets and get good competition from Key West on a weekly basis. Many schools are unable to find meets due to COVID protocols on the mainland, so we are lucky,” Marathon track coach Lance Martin said.

Key West will host Archbishop McCarthy at 3 p.m. Friday March 19.
