PARENTS FRUSTRATED AS STUDENTS NOT BACK TO SCHOOL FULL-TIME DISTRICT SAYS MITIGATION EFFORTS KEEPING COVID SPREAD DOWN

K

-5 students in Monroe County have been back in the classroom full-time, but those in grades 6-12 continue to attend on an alternating A/B schedule.

That has Upper Keys parents, like Stephanie Ganim, growing frustrated as they await the day their middle and high school kids return five days a week.

Monroe County Superintendent of Schools Theresa Axford said during a recent board meeting that the district is still in the “red zone” when examining new cases per 100,000 people the past seven days. And while a discussion is likely with health officials at the March 9 school board meeting, Axford acknowledged that low cases among students, teachers and staff are a byproduct of the district’s mitigation efforts.

“It’s on my mind every day,” Axford said to school board members on getting all students in the classroom. “I’m thinking about it all the time.”

A guidebook for reopening schools in Monroe County was approved by the board last July.

Currently the district allows students in pre-K through fifth grade to attend face-to-face for instruction each day. But class sizes are reduced with some students in a classroom and others stationed elsewhere like gyms.

As for grades 6-12, which sees more movement in halls with period schedules, students are attending every other day with virtual asynchronous work on alternating days. In an

interview last week, Axford told the Weekly that additional students who need support due to poor performance or inability to use technology successfully have been attending five days. As for the number of Keys students in danger of failing, Axford said they don’t have a figure yet.

A school teacher herself, Ganim has a junior who attends Coral Shores. He holds a 3.5 grade point average all while taking honors and AP courses and working two restaurant jobs. He always planned to follow his brothers’ footsteps in attending a four-year college, but decided a couple months ago to attend community college. The reason? “He doesn’t feel prepared,” Ganim said.

Speaking to board members during the Feb. 23 school board meeting, she relayed that while kids are allowed to engage in activities, clubs and sports after hours, they still aren’t allowed back into school five days a week.

“Why is it OK for A day and B day students to commingle at a school-sanctioned event after school hours, but not during school?” she said. “How is this fair or helping our kids?”

A change.org petition created by Ganim, urging to get students back to school five days a week, garnered more than 300 signatures as of March 3. Among those supporting the petition is Denise Cano, mother of a freshman and junior who attend Coral Shores. continued on the next page

While her younger child is pulling a 4.6 grade point average, she said he complains about his learning drive being low. Her older child is barely passing. And his motivation, too, is falling.

“It takes a village to raise a child, and I personally have had many conversations with other parents, teachers, school administrators and counselors. And they all know our kids are suffering and suffering bad,” Cano said.

CDC guidelines for school operations, which were updated Feb. 26, recommends administrators work with local public health officials to assess the level of risk based on the level of community transmission. It recommends they examine the number of cases per 100,000 in the past seven days.

CDC indicators deem more than 100 new cases per 100,000 in the past seven days as “high transmission,” while 0-9 new cases are characterized as “low transmission.” Per data from the Florida Health Department of Monroe County, for the week spanning Feb. 23 to March 2, 194 new cases of COVID-19 were reported for an average of 27 cases a day.

But with a district of about 8,700 students, 187 students have been confirmed with COVID-19 since tracking started in late August. Of those, 44 are from Key West High School, 24 from Coral Shores High School, 21 from Plantation Key School in Tavernier and 20 from Marathon High School.

Thirty-three teachers and 38 staff members were also confirmed to have COVID since the tracking, per the most recent district data.

“Our mitigation efforts have really worked very well. That could be because we have 6 feet distancing in all of our classrooms,” Axford said. “That definitely has to be one of the reasons for that.”

Axford went on to acknowledge that bringing back all students full-time wouldn’t allow adequate social distancing.

“We have social distancing right now, and we would have to collapse that from 6 feet to between 3 and 6 feet in order to bring all the students back,” she said.

Ganim said she doesn’t see why the high school can’t convert the gymnasium into classrooms similar to what Plantation Key School did. Ganim said she’s asking the board to send home a survey asking parents if they want their child in school full-time.

“I was in support of being closed at the beginning of the school year just to see how things went, but after Labor Day I really began to feel that the kids needed to go back,” she said. “I hope to hear that they finally agree to do what is best for the children of our community and bring these kids back to face to face instruction full time.”

Cano said watching children shift from a daily routine of waking up, getting dressed for success and getting to school on time has all been lost.

“The point is that they had a routine … a consistent routine that supplements those in their personal lives and completes the whole picture,” she said.

In a March 2 Facebook post, the school district said it appreciates the cooperation during the school year with all its efforts to keep students and staff safe. In keeping with those efforts, the district asked everyone to avoid unnecessary travel over the upcoming spring break holiday, which begins March 22.

“It is particularly crucial that everyone stay home and stay safe because we have important academic testing when students return. If a student travels and, upon return, has to go through the process of COVID testing and reducing contact with others, it may have an impact on their ability to test and may mean participating in make-up testing instead,” Axford said in a statement.

’CANE SEASON TO START EARLIER?

arlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it will meet this spring to decide whether or not to start the Atlantic hurricane season — which typically begins on June 1 — earlier.

Insiders say the idea being considered is for a May 15 start.

It makes sense. Over the past six years, the first storms of the season have formed before June 1. In 2020, Tropical Storm Arthur formed on May 16. In 2019, Subtropical Storm Andrea got its act together by May 20. In 2018, Tropical Storm Albert came to life on May 25.

National Weather Service’s Jon Rizzo said NOAA can’t just “call it,” the agency needs buyin from other countries that will be affected and the supervisory agency of the World Meteorological Organization.

“This shift is going to take a little time,” said Rizzo.

What will happen this year, though, is an earlier start to Tropical Weather Outlook reports. Those will begin May 15 and are designed to keep tabs on disturbances that might develop. In 2020, NOAA issued 36 of those.

And then there are space hurricanes. Oh, yes. Earlier this week, a Chinese scientist released modeling of observations taken in 2014 over the North Pole. The storm they analyzed was reportedly 1,000 kilometers across and was “raining electrons” as it turned counterclockwise.

This ought to be pretty exciting news at NOAA’s Space Weather Center in Colorado.

Yes, it exists. According to Rizzo, their job is to monitor the sun, watching for solar flares that can cause electromagnetic storms. The discovery of the space hurricane has the same implications on Earth as solar flares — messed-up electric power transmission, plus jinky radio, satellite and GPS connections.

The good news, Rizzo said, is that those stellar disruptions don’t have as much affect in the Keys. The impacts, he said, are felt more in the upper part of the U.S. and Canada. No word yet on the formation of a space hurricane season.

COMMISSIONER, RESIDENTS AGREE ON PARK SOLUTIONS Forster looks to revisit parks and rec director position JIM McCARTHY

omeowners in one Tavernier community appear to be in agreement with their county commissioner on issues witnessed at a local park and solutions to calm the chaos.

Frustrations and concerns peaked at Harry Harris Park on Valentine’s Day when several calls were made to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Complaints filed in as the park reached full capacity, which angered a local resident who was denied entry. Nearby homeowners also called the sheriff’s office over park-goers berating the attendant.

Events that unfolded on Feb. 17 not only led the Tavernier Community Association to craft a letter urging action by the board of county commissioners, but it also drew county commissioner Mike Forster to hold a virtual town hall meeting on March 1. The first-time commissioner made it known that parks in Monroe County needed attention and dollars during the campaign trail. He followed up on that promise by diving in on the issues surrounding Harry Harris and other county parks.

“I think we need to up our game on the parks,” Forster said in his introductory statements.

Forster added that the county is “missing the ball” on cost recovery when visitors enter parks. Not only did he acknowledge the need for park fees from non-county residents and boaters during weekends and holidays, but he also believes the hiring of a parks and recreation director is essential for parks like Harry Harris. An agenda item is expected to come before the board of county commissioners during the March 17 meeting to revisit the parks and rec director position.

“We need to make sure we’re able to do improvements without burdening the taxpayers of Monroe County when others are using it — and in some cases degrading it,” he said. “A similar park charges $20 each way to bring a boat in and out.”

Around 35 people joined Forster’s virtual town hall. Several speakers expressed concerns on overcrowding and sided with Forster on his proposals. Scott Papp, who spoke on behalf of the Tavernier Community Association, said they’re 100% behind Forster on the need for a parks and rec director.

Papp said the current care of the parks is “scatter shot” that needs a gentle but firm hand at the top.

“Most counties in South Florida have an individual parks and rec department, some of which do an amazing job,” he said.

In his statements, Papp said Harry Harris turns into a parking lot on busy weekends between all the trucks and trailers filing in. When he first moved into the park, he said only 20 trailers and boats were allowed. But sometime last year, he said that number tripled with parking opening up on the street and the grassy area adjacent to the baseball fields.

“It went from 20 to 40 and 60 boats and trailers at the park. That was way over use,” he said.

Papp also acknowledged the TCA’s agreement with Forster on fees for cost recovery, although he said most people think fees for out-of-county residents should be seven days a week and not just holidays and weekends.

The association also believes citations should be issued for illegally parked cars. Forster said he’d like to see either a public works employee or a park attendant with code enforcement capabilities to write tickets.

“If they had code enforcement, then you don’t need to take MCSO away from the road,” he said.

Resident Lauren Hoefert-Dunn said she’d like to see the park restored to what it used to be. The creator of the Harry Harris Families Group, she said it’s provided not only those in the neighborhood a way to stay in touch, but it’s also allowed for transparency and communication within the community.

“I like that we now have a force and you to advocate for us,” she told Forster.

POLITICAL PROMISES? BETHEL BACKTRACKS CLAIM THAT MAYOR FAILED TO DELIVER BOARD SEAT FOR POLITICAL SUPPORT MANDY MILES mandy@keysweekly.com

A

former Key West city commissioner who accused the mayor of Key West of reneging on a prommised board appointment in exchange for political support is now saying there was “absolutely no” promise of political favors.

In a Feb. 25 email to the mayor, all city commissioners and the city attorney, former city commissioner Harry Bethel alleges the mayor promised him a seat on the Key West Housing Authority board in exchange for his personal and financial contributions to her 2018 mayoral campaign. The email starts with Bethel criticizing the mayor for not returning his calls or emails.

Bethel’s email then discusses the Key West Housing Authority board of directors. Bethel writes: “Now let’s go back in history when you first ran for mayor, you, myself and another gentleman friend... had lunch at Antonia’s and we told you we would support you in the election and financially. I asked you at that meeting, if, when you had the opportunity, would you appoint me to the Key West Housing Authority board of directors, and your response was YES,” Bethel’s email states.

“That right there shows me your word is WORTHLESS...Every commissioner that sits with you has returned my calls. MAYBE YOU WILL RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL….

LET’S SEE.” Online records show that Bethel and his wife, Faye, each donated $100 to Johnston’s 2018 mayoral campaign.

When Bethel spoke with the Keys Weekly by phone on March 1, four days after he sent the email, Bethel said Johnston “absolutely” had agreed to put him on the housing authority board, and that the other person who was at the 2018 lunch would attest to it. “I supported her, yes, ma’am. I held up my end,” Bethel told the Keys Weekly. “But that’s OK. She has to run for re-election. And we’ll see what happens then.”

When interviewed on U.S. 1 Radio on March 2, news director Joe Moore asked Bethel if any potential bribe was discussed at the 2018 meeting. “Absolutely not,” Bethel said on the radio. “I don’t do that.

I know better than that, for crying out loud. I’ve been in politics too many years.

I told Teri, if you’re elected and have the opportunity to appoint someone to the housing authority board, I would appreciate it if you could appoint me because I’d like to end my public service career where I started, which is on that board.

Johnston told Keys Weekly she is exploring the possibility of expanding the all-volunteer housing authority board to seven members from its current five, and that she has been approached by “20 or so people who have asked to be considered for that highly respected board position.

What better way to add ideas and expertise to that prominent board than by expanding it rather than replacing anyone currently on it?”

“There is no back-room deal,” Johnston told Keys Weekly. “I quite frankly don’t remember exactly what was said during that lunch meeting more than two years ago, but Mr. Bethel has asked to serve on every board. He’s been on the warpath, and I hate to even give him any air time with this. My obligation to this community is to pick the most qualified people who can effectively serve our needs.”

Johnston said she is looking for people with an understanding of the current state of affordable housing, available funding sources and the potential for “infilling,” meaning adding units to existing housing authority sites such as at Poinciana Plaza and Porter Place.

Village asks residents to recycle properly Village of Islamorada residents are reminded that garbage must not be placed in recycling carts. If garbage is in the recycling bin, it will be picked up as household trash. The recycle bin will be left full to be collected on the next regular trash pickup day. This also gives the resident the opportunity to remove the garbage and ensure the recyclable materials are clean before the next recycling pickup day. Fees will apply for the pickup of more than one can of garbage per home on a trash pickup day. Each home in Islamorada is provided one 64-gallon green trash cart and one 64-gallon blue recycle cart. To encourage residential recycling, an additional blue cart can be delivered to a home free of charge and there is no additional fee for pickups from the extra recycle cart. Indian Key boat ramp closed through summer The boat ramp at Indian Key Fill, approximately MM 78.5 along the area known as the Fills, was damaged early in February while a contractor was putting equipment into the water. The hard pack surface was disturbed at the ramp entrance on the shoreline and extending into the water. Following an evaluation of the damage, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) determined that restoration must be completed before the area can be reopened to the public.

The restoration is the responsibility of the contractor that created the damage. The contractor is working with an environmental consulting group to create the necessary restoration plan.

The plan now requires approval and permitting from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and will also require permitting with the Army Corps of Engineers and authorization through the National Marine Sanctuary. The contractor is coordinating closely with FDEP and the Village during this process. It is estimated that the permitting process and restoration work will take months to complete, possibly until the end of the year.

rganizers of two Islamorada farmers markets recently expressed their frustrations to council members over the village not only deeming the events flea markets, but also notifying them to cease immediately.

Michael Anzalone and Jae Jans together put on a farmers market at MM 81 and MM 80.9, oceanside, every Sunday. Not long ago, the two received letters from the village’s code compliance department to shut down — the reason being that the development services director characterized them as flea markets.

Issues of parking and public safety were also a concern.

Such events require temporary use permits to operate, but the village isn’t issuing those out any time soon (see story, this page).

Councilman Henry Rosenthal placed a discussion topic on the Feb. 25 meeting agenda to allow the public the opportunity to speak on the matter. Rosenthal said the village was close to shutting down Anzalone and Jans’ market event on Feb. 21, but held out to allow for discussion four days later.

“I feel it’s important for vendors to have the opportunity to be heard on their position,” Rosenthal said.

The first among the public to speak, Anzalone said the brick and mortar establishments in his Galleria Shopping Plaza complained that the farmers market next door was consuming all their parking.

He called Maria Bassett, interim village manager, to see what could be done.

“I was told the farmers market didn’t require a special event permit. It was an approved use,” he said.

Anzalone said he also called then Capt. Corey Bryan to get his take on parking. Anzalone was told if he wanted to control parking, “sit out there and control it.” While suggestions of towing away illegally parked vehicles was suggested by some, Anzalone said he didn’t want to do that.

“If I sit there and a farmers market is an approved use in a highway commercial zoning, I would put a couple tents out there on my own, which I did,” he said. “It was very rewarding to the fact that I got to meet people who are just trying to survive from COVID-19. A

lot of them had their own stores but lost them.”

Anzalone contends the vendors who show up to the farmers market in Islamorada also frequent markets in Big Pine Key, municipal property on Key Colony Beach and Key West.

“These vendors make the circuit, they go from one to the next to the next and repeated,” he said.

Jae Jans, manager of the Florida Keys Farmers Market next door, said he believed it would be premature for the council to vote on shutting farmers market events down.

He said they’ve been operating as a farmers market for four years. He said there’s a distinction between an event and a permitted use.

“If we need to work with the village council on a definition, all along I’ve been open to that,” he said. “I responded to the initial request from the code compliance officer with a detailed response, and I haven’t received a call or a response email from a single person in the village.”

Jans said not allowing a farmers market affects the ability to pay property taxes and mortgages. And it affects the livelihoods of 50-plus small businesses. He recommended the village work on a definition and adopt the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumers definition of a community farmers market.

Kelly Perez, who has lived in Key Largo her entire life, said a farmers market is essential to the economy and small business, and it’s “not a flea market in any way.”

“There’s mostly only homemade goods and a lot of produce as well as agriculture,” she said.

“How is it possible our farmers market is marked unsafe when everybody is wearing a mask and it’s outside. And there are so many bars and restaurants open who allow their people to not even mask or anything and still stand in these massive pools of people. It’s unfair when we all follow the rules.”

Council members agreed that a definition should be created for a farmers market.

“It’s going to take a while to get to the finish line on this. This is not something we’re not going to snap our fingers and fix,” said Councilman Mark Gregg.

Mayor Buddy Pinder agreed, stating that staff needs to “look at this a little more and come up with a definition.”

arge-scale events and festivals in Islamorada won’t happen any time soon, following the village council’s recent decision to halt the issuance of temporary use permits to early summer.

Concerns over the upcoming spring break and the flow of visitors, as well as the percentage of those vaccinated in the county to date, led to the 5-0 vote during a Feb. 25 meeting.

Before rendering the decision, the dais welcomed the county’s top health officer, Bob Eadie, via Zoom to discuss Monroe County’s standing in the COVID-19 pandemic. While he acknowledged optimism with the infection rate — one of the lowest in all of Florida — he told council members precau-

tions need to continue with infections occurring throughout the islands.

Of some concern was the increased number in pediatric cases in the last week or so, Eadie said.

“I don’t know whether that means anything at all right now, but it does serve as a reminder that we need to be, as a community, cautious and conservative as far as what our next moves will be.”

More vaccinations are coming into the county, as more sites are coming online by the day. Eadie said he hopes eventually to have a vaccination clinic at Founders Park. A vaccination event is scheduled for March 6 at the Murray Nelson Government Center in Key Largo.

Eadie said the Florida Health Department in Monroe County receives around 500 doses a week, which is up

from 100 it was receiving at the outset.

Publix and Winn Dixie stores are obtaining shots through the federal pharmacy program, although it’s unknown how many they’re obtaining weekly.

Eadie said he believes doses will significantly increase in the next four to six weeks throughout the country.

“I’m optimistic that we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “Six months from now, I think our world will be vastly different in a positive way.”

Councilman Pete Bacheler asked Eadie if it’s too early to allow events like flea markets. Eadie said he’d like municipalities to stay the course for at least four more weeks.

“It’s obviously working; look at our numbers and trends compared to other parts of Florida and the country.

I think being conservative is the right thing to do,” Eadie said.

Entering March, Councilman David Webb said, the island is only beginning to see the flow of people for spring break. Webb also asked Eadie what percentage of the county is vaccinated, to which the reply was 10.7%.

“A lot of people are acting like because the vaccine is available and distributed that it’s over. We have a very, very small percentage of people that are actually vaccinated,” he said. “All the spring breakers coming from all over the United States, the likelihood is none of them have been vaccinated.

While the impact might not be critical to them, they can infect anybody else.”

Webb subsequently led a motion extending a halt on village-sanctioned events to June 1, and it received unanimous support. Council members originally approved an event restriction to April 1 in their first meeting together in November. It led to the cancellation of the Upper Keys Gigantic Nautical Flea Market that usually welcomes roughly 300 vendors and thousands of attendees. The annual swim to Alligator Lighthouse, third Thursday art walks on Morada Way and the annual Baygrass Bluegrass festival were also affected.

“People can do whatever they want in their homes, and people can do what they want with private property and bars and everything else,” Webb said. “What I'm concerned about is us sanctioning something that is not in our best interest.”

Supporting the motion, Bacheler said it’s better to be prudent than to “make a mistake and get a lot of people sick.” Councilman Mark Gregg agreed, stating that it’s smarter to telegraph an expectation to the community rather than “bread crumb them along a week or a month at a time.”

UNCONVENTIONAL COLLABORATION CLEANS UP KEY WEST WATERS

L

ast week, U.S. Army Green Berets joined the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the U.S. Coast Guard in a first-ever, joint underwater cleanup in the waters off Key West.

As the Army’s most specialized experts in unconventional warfare, Green Berets training sometimes includes time at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School (SFUWO) in Key West. Since the 1960s, the location has been the Army’s only educational facility of the sort.

SFUWO divers navigate on sections of seafloor as part of their underwater training.

Last summer, a contractor looking for Civil War munitions between Fort Taylor and the reef found potentially dangerous materials in the areas used for SFUWO training, and the “perfect opportunity” for this unique collaboration presented itself.

The cleanup was organized under Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys and Blue Star Dive programs, which provide grants to local dive operators to remove marine debris safely. Under the programs, tens of thousands of pounds of debris have already been removed from Keys waters.

“Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary educates Blue Star dive operators on best practices for debris removal and over 50,000 pounds have been retrieved from Keys’ waters to date,” said Sara Rankin, local chapter director for National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, which funds the programs. “Pairing Blue Star divers with U.S. Army Special Forces and the U.S. Coast Guard is the most genuine representation of how a community-led program flourishes. It was a great day for our community above and below the water.”

Bob Holston, a past member of the foundation board and currently of Dive Key West,

a Blue Star operator, noted how divers will be the “canary in the mine” for problems in the sanctuary and highlighted how they can also be part of the solution, with programs like the Blue Star Diving Program.

“We get to see the changes that are happening on the reef way before the average person does,” he said. “Any operator that does not take part in the Blue Star program is contributing to the demise of their industry. What we want to do is get these people involved, get their customers involved.”

Holston realized that he wanted to take part in the cleanup when he realized the special forces train with such obstructions.

“A diver who is on closed circuit leaves no bubbles, so it’s very hard to track them,” he explained. “We did not want them to get tangled up in something.”

The novel mission resulted in the removal of more than 1,200 pounds of debris from SFUWO training waters. The special team of divers worked two locations off Truman Annex, bringing to the surface an array of cables and pipes for safe disposal. The cables were very much embedded and had clearly been there for a long time, SFUWO’s CW2 Nate Tiffany told the Keys Weekly.

“Our students do numerous dives throughout the year in that specific training area and we were able to clean it up,” said Tiffany. “Not only does it help us safety-wise for dives in that area but it helps divers in Key West in general and we were able to do this alongside our NOAA brethren.”

Tiffany said that it “meant a lot” to hear that NOAA would help clean up the SFUWO training area and that they would continue to work with the governmental organization in the future to recover additional debris in and around the training areas near Key West.

or years, the Monroe Compute$ program has been paying Florida Keys high school students cash incentives when they earn various computer certifications.

Key West philanthropist and education activist John Padget founded Monroe Compute$ and funds the incentives through the Golden Fleece Foundation he created with his late partner Jacob Dekker.

This year, Padget has doubled the incentives from $250 to $500 to reward all students who excel in AP computer science or who attain the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification.

Monroe Compute$ is making extra funding available to reward students who earn the MOS industry certificate or pass the AP computer science exam with a score of 3 or above during the 2020-21 school year.

“Students who persist during this challenging school year deserve the increased award,” Padget said. “Studying remotely requires extra effort and dedication. We want to reward the students who put in the time and achieve success.”

Sibba Mira, the school district’s career and technical education coordinator, added, “Students will be very happy with this exciting news.

Many are studying at their own pace, and these increased awards will motivate them to redouble their efforts.”

Superintendent Theresa Axford also shared her support for the program during a recent school board meeting.

“Monroe students earning skills in computer science can look forward to bright careers,” Axford said. “Students have a tremendous opportunity to enhance their skills for post-secondary choices based on gaining certifications.”

Monroe Compute$ prizes range from $50 to $500 depending on the difficulty of the certification exam, and Padget has pledged over $100,000 in incentives to students earning Microsoft, Adobe, Autodesk, QuickBooks, and Digital Literacy certifications in grades 4-12. “Students can earn hundreds of dollars, while learning valuable computer skills necessary to compete in today’s global economy,” said Padget.

A MAN IN SEARCH OF A WARMER CLIMATE

Editor’s note: This is the first installment in a four-part series.

I

f it hadn’t been for arsenic poisoning, Henry Perrine probably would have never ended up in the Florida Keys. Unfortunately, the poisoning happened.

He was born Henry Edward Perrine in one of New Jersey’s oldest towns, Cranbury, on April 5, 1797. The oldest of six children, Henry was an inquisitive child who liked to learn. Unexpectedly, his father died in 1813. Henry was 16. The doctor also experimented with plants and herbs.

One of those botanicals was Peruvian tree bark. He used the bark to make a tincture, and whenever he called on a sick patient, he would take a shot of the tincture to fortify his immune system. In addition to the tree bark, Perrine was experimenting with arsenic.

It was not long until the young doctor needed an assistant. In 1821, Perrine was called away on a medical emergency. As was customary, he went to his office, poured a shot of his tincture into a glass, and drank it before climbing on to his horse and riding away. Returning to the office, the assistant recognized the tragic mistake immediately. Perrine had taken his medicine from a glass used in an arsenic experiment. It had yet to be cleaned. The assistant saddled his horse and raced after the doctor.

Though Dr. Perrine was found in time, he never fully recovered. All was good as long as the weather was warm, but once the temperatures began to drop, his compromised system would begin to break down. It did not take long to realize he needed to move to a warmer climate. The first stop was Natchez, Mississippi, where he spent much of his time in the riverboat town setting the bones of those engaged in fisticuffs. While in Natchez, he contracted malaria, also known as yellow fever.

As he recovered from the illness, Perrine experimented with a new drug called quinine that was derived from the bark of the cinchona tree native to Central and South America. He took copious notes and, after recovering from the disease, submitted his work to the Philadelphia Journal of Medical and Physical Sciences in 1826. It became the most important paper on the use of quinine for 100 years.

Continuing to move south, Perrine went to Louisiana, but the winters were still too cold, and the doctor decided to go to his wife and growing family in New York. What was clear was that he needed to live somewhere warm that did not experience extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations. He needed to be in the tropics or, at the very least, the sub-tropics. At about the same time, the government announced it would seek applications to fill 100 consul positions representing the United States around the globe.

Based on climate, Dr. Henry Perrine applied to be the consul at Campeche on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

After waiting for a response for several months, Perrine was offered the job. His post would be stationed at Tabasco, Mexico, where his primary responsibility was documenting cargoes either being imported from or being exported to the United States. Perrine’s 10-year post at Tabasco began in 1827. Though Perrine and his family did not arrive at Indian Key until Christmas Day, 1838, his association with the Florida Keys began years earlier.

In part two, Doctor Perrine will connect with Charles Howe of Indian Key and Lighthouse Keeper John Dubose at Key Biscayne’s Cape Florida Lighthouse.

he annual “Delicate Balance of Nature” lecture series kicks off its 30th season in a virtual format due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It’s sponsored by the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park (Citizen Support Organization). This year the series will be three online presentations via Zoom, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The first talk, on Wednesday, March 10, “Crabs and Coral Restoration,” will be presented by Angelo “Jason” Spadaro, assistant professor of marine science and technology at the College of the Florida Keys.

The iconic coral reef ecosystem in Florida, of both economic and ecological value, is now dependent on restoration efforts if it is to survive. Spadaro will discuss research that led to the inclusion of a large native crab species in ongoing coral restoration projects in Florida and other Caribbean basin locations. The Zoom format creates the opportunity for the series to continue and others to attend, but it will be a limited audience (100 participants, including the speaker and hosts). Art exhibit and sale at dive museum An ocean-themed art display created by Art Guild of the Purple Isles members and other artists is on display at the History of Diving Museum in Islamorada. Known as the “Art of the Abyss,” the pieces of art are on sale through March 17. Within the museum are paintings and photography by local artists such as BJ Royster, Pasta Pantaleo, among others. Also available is the “Sinking World” collection created

by Andres Franke. These fantastical images combine period-dressed models interacting with shipwreck sites from Florida and the Caribbean. Each piece is unique due to the natural marine growth that developed while submerged on its shipwreck site. A portion of sales will be donated to the museum to support educational outreach and exhibit upkeep, while sales also will support local artists whose opportunities to display and sell works have been affected due to the pandemic.

History & Discovery Center to open Saturdays Keys History & Discovery Center is reopening on Saturdays beginning March 6. Located on the Islander Resort property in Islamorada, the museum has been closed on weekends due to staffing limitations caused

by COVID-19. Days of operation are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Safety features are in place in consideration of the ongoing pandemic. These include requirement of face coverings to be worn throughout the visit, plexiglass shields at the point of payment, availability of hand sanitizer, and social distancing guides.

f you attend the outdoor pop-up art show, Good Vibes, on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7, in Islamorada, you just might be able to sneak a peek at Maxine Trainer’s colorful art-crammed studio, which will be just a few steps away from the exhibits.

Grab a peek at her studio, and have a friendly run-in with her beloved yapping dogs, Twitch and ChiChi. “Oh, look!” Trainer yelled with affection at her little barking dogs. Twitch was wagging his tail happily while ChiChi snarled, baring her teeth. “That one is the lover! And that one is neurotic! Lover! Neurotic!” she exclaimed, continuing to yell comically, pointing her finger back and forth between the wagging and snarling dogs.

Then, Trainer settled into a comfy chair in the corner of her vibrant studio, grabbed a glass of wine, and purred, “Yes, darling.”

She told Keys Weekly about her latest news: She and her artist friends have organized the outdoor pop-up Good Vibes Art Show to benefit MarrVelous Pet Rescues and Upper Keys Humane Society. The show will feature locals such as Annie Anderson, Maria Wagner, Eleanor McCandless and many others, as well as mainlander Kricket Moros from Cocoa.

A percentage of the profits from item sales such as prints, original canvases, hats, buffs, ceramic tiles, notecards, and more will go toward local rescue animals. Music will be deejayed by Wood Campbell, a.k.a. the “Fuzzy Buddha.”

“I’m actually doing really good,” Trainer said about her health after breast cancer treatment. “I’ve been really prolific. The past two years have been chemo treatments and artwork. The next step is to get the work out

there for the public to see.”

Due to restrictions of the pandemic, Trainer has been challenged to find a place to show and sell her art. Then she had an epiphany.

“I sat at my kitchen window with my bald head on New Year’s Eve. I felt great. I said to my artist friend Dan Davis, ‘Let’s do an outdoor pop-up.’”

He was game, so in the first two weeks of January, the two displayed their work in a tent on the Old Highway property of Trainer’s friend and landlord, Wilada Bailey. Bailey gave her full support and permission for the pop-up.

“One woman came off the street, jogging by, and paid $4,000 for a painting,” Trainer

Also on tap for Trainer: a solo exhibit at Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo, an art book about rescue animals and stained-glass classes at her studio.

Encouraged by the success of the January pop-up, Trainer set her sights on a more ambitious goal: Why not invite artists to display their work and make an exhibition to benefit rescue animals?

Hanging out with Trainer for more than two minutes, people will discover that she is completely besotted with animals. Her Facebook feed is full of photos of four-legged friends that need homes. She said over 3 million animals a year in shelters get killed —“killed, not euthanized.”

CANES TRACK COMPETES AT SPARTAN INVITATIONAL Dobson sets school record in discus

record was set by one member of the Coral Shores track and field team during competition at the Spartan Invitational at Southridge Park in Miami on Feb. 26.

Competing in the discus throw was senior Riley Dobson. Her throw was measured at 84 feet and 22 inches, which gave her the school record.

In other events, the Canes 4x100 girls relay team placed third with a time of 52.96 seconds. The relay team was composed of Lucia Rodriguez, Terran Clayton, Alexis Terry and Maya Gadea.

Alison Woltanski accomplished a personal record of 18.10 seconds, coming in 15th place in the 100-meter hurdle. Rodriguez ran her personal record of 28.46 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Lilly Trumbull accomplished a personal record of 2 minutes and 56 seconds in the 800-meter run.

Alexis Terry came in 19th place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.80 seconds.

As for the boys, Simon Gutierrez accomplished his personal record of 5 minutes and 14 seconds in the 1600-meter run. Gutierrez also ran a personal record of 11 minutes and 45 seconds in the 3200-meter run.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I was born in Bogota, Colombia.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Mrs. Andersen because she really cares about her students, and she always makes sure we understand the things she is teaching.

What does “a good education” mean to you? To me, a good education is just making sure I understand what I’m being taught.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best?

In my opinion, the dumbest rule is that girls cannot wear shorts. The best rule (this year) is that we have to wear masks.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores and why are they important to you? I am currently involved with volleyball and basketball.

Basketball has always been my number one sport, and I was fortunate enough to be on the varsity team as a freshman.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to college and hopefully play college basketball, but I am not sure where I want to go yet.

SCIENCE & ART ‘MOTHER EARTH’ ARTWORK AT MOTE MARINE LABORATORY ADDED TO FLORIDA KEYS SCULPTURE TRAIL

O

n Thursday, March 4 at 5 p.m., Mote and the Florida Keys Council of the Arts will host a free, virtual event to unveil a nature-inspired sculpture located at Mote’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration in Summerland Key. This sculpture, named after Greek mythological goddess of Mother Earth, Gaea, serves as a visual representation of the blended courtship of science and art.

Gaea, created by Italian-born artist Gaia Grossi, was created originally as a part of the “Model to Monument” program, a partnership between the Art Students League of New York and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The “Model to Monument” program nominates advanced sculpture students to design, engineer, fabricate and install a sculpture that will be exhibited in New York City parks for about a year. Gaea was displayed at Riverside Park in New York City prior to being selected by Key West philanthropists John Padget and the late Jacob Dekker, to add to the growing display of public art being placed throughout the Keys as part of the Florida Keys Sculpture Trail.

Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, initiated the collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory’s director of regional operations, Allison Delashmit.

The connection between the motherearth origins of the sculpture and the scientifically-driven restoration actively happening on our coral reef was “immediate and profound” for both Young and Delashmit.

Young said, “the vastness of the Cat. 5 laboratory only complemented the robustness of the sculpture. It adds an element of beauty in the bustle of hard ground-breaking scientific work happening at Mote.”

The sculpture, a massive concrete structure weighing around 30,000 pounds, sits next to a land-based coral nursery and outdoor classroom that hosts education groups from around the world at Mote.

“Mote’s coral reef science is adding a beautiful sculpture trail of sorts underwater throughout Florida’s Coral Reef, while the Florida Keys Council of the Arts is weaving art through the unique landscapes of our above-ground communities. Mote is honored to be part of this collaboration,” Delashmit said.

The unveiling is free and open to the public. During the 45-minute presentation, attendees learn about the creation of the sculpture and its journey to its permanent home, take a mini-tour through Mote’s coral laboratory, and listen to Padget and his thoughts on the importance of public art.

EXPRESSING HERSELF Music ‘had to have some place in my life’ JIM McCARTHY

A karaoke machine would play inside the Tavernier home where a young Leah Sutter would walk around and sing. Her parents knew there was something special inside early on in her life, and that belief grew, from her days learning guitar, taking piano lessons and singing at church.

Soon enough, the Keys community would experience what her mom and dad long knew about their daughter’s musical passion and talent.

Today, the 28-year-old from Tavernier is gracing stages across the Upper Keys with her vocals, guitar and favorite music.

From the beer garden at Florida Keys Brewing Co. to Baker’s Cay Resort, Sutter’s performances add an elegance and sense of relaxation for those enjoying a drink and a picturesque day.

One of four kids, Sutter recalls the piano lessons and the recitals. She also remembers the day her dad gave her a guitar — her very first instrument — at around 12 years of age. Sutter immediately gravitated toward strumming.

“That’s when I really started to write more songs because you can sit there with your guitar and play chords. … You start to think of melodies and things in your head,” she said. “It’s this amazing process, especially as you’re a young person where you’re coming into your own and figuring out these heightened emotions you go through. Music was one of the main resources to express myself.”

Sutter took classical voice lessons during her middle school years and all throughout high school. While homeschooled, she participated in theater and music programs at Coral Shores High School with help from Michele Zofchak, teacher and play organizer.

“She got me that much more comfortable performing in front of people and getting to experience the arts,” Sutter said.

She was also a part of a band in high school that played at the annual Bayjam at Founders Park. The more she performed on stage, the more she realized that music wasn’t just a passion, but also a part of who she was.

“Moving forward, I knew whether or not I did this professionally or if it was a hobby, I knew I had to be practicing music in my life. It had to have some place in my life.”

After graduating from high school in 2011, Sutter continued to practice music while interning with ICE (Islamorada Community Entertainment) and working in the restaurant business. In 2012, she attended Florida State University where she majored in international affairs with a concentration in sociology.

“I had originally wanted to study music, but I decided I wanted to have a backup plan as far as my future. I had other passions for people and the history of the country and the world, public relations and affairs.”

Sutter continued to play music while taking music lessons on the side during her college years. She also continued with her band from high school — all members went on to attend FSU. They were known as “Leah and the Aviators.”

“We played all these venues in Tallahassee. We wrote an EP (extended play) together and published it called ‘Air Ride.’ That was really exciting to record music that we wrote together,” she said.

After college, she came back to the Keys and picked up gigs. She ultimately made a business out of it, with the island chain providing an opportunity unlike any other for artists. One gig turned into another. Almost five years later, Sutter said, it’s working.

“It’s a very fulfilling experience,” she said. “One, I love the Keys. I wouldn’t be where I am without the community who influenced me. The nature of who I am, trying to be the most laid-back, easy-going, kind person I can be. There is a nature of easygoingness and ‘don’t take life too seriously’ here.

“I feel a lot of pride being able to perform here whether in the beer garden or at a resort,” she continued. “I am taken aback every time by the beauty of where we live. I’ll look out at the beach and the beautiful sunset and feel an island breeze.

That’s my office.”

Sutter traveled to Los Angeles before the pandemic to record songs for an album. She planned to release the album in 2020, but the pandemic happened.

Nonetheless, Sutter said she’s excited for 2021 — her goal being the release of her new music.

Sutter is one of many students in the Upper Keys to receive financial support from the Upper Keys Rotary Club. With its signature Gigantic Nautical Flea Market raising nearly $200,000, funds go to support scholarships.

Sutter said her scholarship allowed her to pay for everything from books to housing on campus. Not only does she appreciate the Upper Keys Rotary Club’s financial support, she is thankful for the performing opportunities at the flea market that the group’s given her.

“I’m in the community and they still support me. They have not just forgotten a person who moved on from college,” she said. “To me, being part of this campaign to help scholarships with no Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, I’m so happy to give back because they gave back to me.”

For the first time in 26 years, the Gigantic Nautical Flea Market wasn’t held in person due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A fundraising effort continues, however. Hours: Monday-Friday 7am-4pm & On-Call Availability Requirements:

• Work experience with Condominium Association general maintenance or Hotel general maintenance position • Proven knowledge of condominium (or similar) infrastructures and interactions with security and fire systems • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings • Working knowledge of use and maintenance of hand and small electric and gasoline tools • Ability to maintain schedule for routine tasks • Self-motivated • Organizational skills to prioritize • Pool maintenance and certification preferred (will provide training) • Hi lift certification preferred (will assist in obtaining qualifications) • Valid Florida driver license, good driving record and current auto insurance • Ability to Multi task and switch priorities easily • Excellent knowledge of safety procedures/protocols and documentation as required • Friendly demeanor, strong social interacting and communication skills • Work with central oversight • Good physical condition - Ability to lift ~ 50 pounds • Knowledge of Covid precautions and prevention • Integrity and professionalism • Must speak, read, write and understand English • High school degree or equivalent • Willing to be on-call for emergencies after hours

Responsibilities:

• Weekly Operations/Maintenance Meetings with progress reports • Log and communicate the need for property repairs with office / Log completed tasks • Carry out daily property observation rounds for maintenance needs • Perform a wide range of tasks including landscaping, sanding/painting, caulking, routine maintenance • Perform and follow-up on preventive maintenance throughout • Perform general cleaning including sweeping, pressure washing, trash removal as needed • Emergency door, entrance gate preventive maintenance • Irrigation/sprinkler head oversight and maintenance • Interact and communicate with property vendors
