Council set to select consultant to help with management plan

A

management plan will proceed at the Fills — the popular visitor spot in Islamorada — per an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation that gave the village management abilities.

Village council members recently directed staff to present a recommendation for a consultant to assist in the development of a plan at the virtual meeting on Thursday, Feb. 25. A management plan is required under a pair of five-year lease agreements with FDOT and Florida Department of Environmental Protection that were approved by the former council last year.

FDOT owns the right of way that spans Tea Table, Lignumvitae and Indian Keys, while FDEP owns

the Indian Key boat ramp, which many use, including local backcountry guides.

Interim Village Manager Maria Bassett told council members earlier in the month that the initial step in the village’s efforts to manage the Fills was securing a consultant. Issues at the popular visitor spot, MM 77.6 to MM 79.6, came to a breaking point during Memorial Day weekend in 2019, as residents expressed immense frustration over the trashing, mayhem and degradation of nearshore waters.

Designated parking spots, implementation of trash bins and a reduction in speed to 45 mph — thanks to Sheriff Rick Ramsay — have occurred since then.

And last July, council approved the installation of a cable barrier system to delineate parking areas and protect grassy areas, all while keeping people from parking on the Overseas Heritage Trail. It was the least expensive option at an estimated $322,000. A new barrier wouldn’t go up, however, without approval from the current council.

“As staff has previously tried to emphasize, any matters

related to the Fills will be brought back to the village council for input and/or approval,” Bassett said. “As developed, the consultant will confer with the council, and opportunities for public comment will arise.”

Per a request for proposals, the selected consultant would assess the village’s need for directing and managing recreational traffic for public safety purposes on FDOT property. It would also create a conceptual plan for directing and managing recreational traffic using a cable barrier system. The consultant would attend at least two meetings to discuss the master plan for FDOT property, and a final master plan report would be presented to council on or before May 31, 2021.

As for FDEP property, which includes the Indian Key boat ramp, the consultant would assess the village’s need for protection of coastal resources and the marine environment and current protection methods. Development of a conceptual plan would address managing parking spaces, the boat ramp and protection of coastal resources.

“The management plan should improve the safety and enjoyment of the area while reducing the environmental damage caused by overuse, including an appropriate level of parking and recreational space,” according to the scope of services.

At least two meetings would be had on the FDEP master plan, and a final master plan report would be presented to council members on or before May 31, 2021.

With the Fills an area of interest for Councilman David Webb during the campaign, he said he’s not in favor of spending for infrastructure on FDOT property. Webb told fellow council members that providing bathrooms and parking will only slow down traffic for those looking to pull off.

Improvements to the boat access point is something Webb would support with use seen from local residents and backcountry guides who trailer their boats.

Councilman Mark Gregg said it’s vital to maintain the two leases, which have subsequent five-year renewals. The lease with FDEP took

effect on June 16, 2020 with two five-year renewal options. A lease with FDOT took effect September 2019 and ends in September 2024.

It, too, has a five-year renewal option.

“I guess we have a threshold decision: Do we want to give it all back to the DOT and DEP? And my answer is, ‘hell no.’ We got here because of problems that were there because they did nothing,” he said.

“And, yes, we’re spending money on it and that’s DOT land and so forth, but maybe that’s the price we pay for the privilege of controlling to our benefit and liking,” he said.

The Feb. 25 meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Due to the size and configuration of the Founders Park Community Center, which serves as the council chambers, and in keeping with CDC and Florida Department of Health guidelines, capacity of the Community Center for village council meetings will be limited indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Only council members and essential staff members required to conduct the meetings will be in physical attendance due to the limited capacity.

LOCAL PARK REACHES CAPACITY; FRUSTRATION SETS IN No mobs or riots witnessed, per Monroe County sheriff

A

county park in Tavernier reached capacity and closed for a time on Valentine’s Day, and that didn’t sit well with those trying to gain entry or with nearby residents complaining of the issues that they say arised from it.

A few calls were made to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 14, with the first at 4:40 p.m. from a local resident who showed up to Harry Harris Park only to find that it was closed due to full capacity. According to call records, he was upset the gate was closed and heard that the attendant would call the police on anyone trying to get in.

Another call came in roughly 20 minutes later from another person complaining that park goers weren’t treating the park attendant well. People who were denied entry were rude and used foul language, the attendant told the deputy who responded. Some jumped the fence to gain entry, the attendant confirmed to the deputy.

One call came in to the sheriff’s office around 7 p.m. from a woman who inquired about law enforcement response at the park. Another call around the same hour came in from a man who was locked inside the park.

No arrests were made from the calls made.

Frustration surrounding the park boiled over so much that it drew the Tavernier Community Association to craft a letter to county commissioners in the leadup to its Feb. 17 meeting. The TCA said the situation as witnessed on Valentine’s Day isn’t new, but rather a recurring issue with a lack of adequate management by the county.

“Tavernier Community Association repeatedly asked our former commissioner for assistance with no action,” the letter reads. “We once again ask the county to step up and accept the responsibilities of management of the county’s crown jewel in the park system.”

The letter called for adjusting work schedules to make sure no county employee is working alone under duress from overcapacity crowds, as well as the creation of a parks and recreation department and the hiring of a director.

County Commissioner Mike Forster placed the hiring of a parks and recreation director on the agenda for the Feb. 17 meeting. He also wants to see park attendants who have code enforcement abilities.

“Public Works are running parks in Monroe County, and the fact is it’s not running very well,” he said.

Forster said he’s planning to hold a virtual town hall via Zoom with residents on Monday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m.

“We can’t accept the status quo any more,” he said.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said he recommended various measures to improve the issues at the park in discussion with Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron. They included a sign indicating the park's full capacity and closure before people reach the park; a camera at the front of the gate; having two attendants during busy weekends; and fencing that angles at the top to prevent people from scaling over, among other things.

“There are things that can be done. We made good recommendations to the county,” Ramsay said.

“They (the county commission) decide what to do.”

Ramsay added that he doesn’t believe Valentine’s Day at Harry Harris Park got out of control to the point where there were riots and chaos. He said deputies spoke with the attendant, who said there were people being rude and using foul language. The sheriff said the attendant wasn’t spit on, as some indicated.

Some 250 calls for service were made to Harry Harris Park in 2020, and Ramsay said most of those were self-generated by deputies.

“Three-quarters of the calls were by deputies doing proactive policing,” he said. “Deputies do extra patrols. They’ll call out watch orders.

“We don’t see a violent pattern and out-of-control behavior at the park with thugs and drug dealers,” he continued. “Yes, a couple of people did jump the fence and a couple people pushed through the front gate. That happens everywhere. None are crimes.”

The TCA’s letter concludes by stating that the situation at Harry Harris Park on Feb. 14 was avoidable.

“It is now an issue that can no longer be avoided,” the letter reads. “We have moved closer to a situation of injury, under the current management practices, and it is time to change management practices.”

LABOR DAY HURRICANE History details African Americans’ storm experiences in 1935

O

n the night of Sept. 2, 1935, the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane’s eye crossed over Lower Matecumbe and Long Key between 9:20 and 10:15 p.m. The storm’s fury brought 185 mph sustained winds and a tidal surge of about 18 feet. With a barometric pressure reading reaching a low of 26.35, the hurricane is still considered the most powerful storm ever to strike North America. Powerful as it was, the hurricane was also tightly wound. Hurricane-force winds extended over a relatively narrow, though devastating, expanse between Key Largo and Grassy Key. When history guides in Key West talk about the ravages of the 1935 Hurricane in the Southernmost City, they are puffing. At 10 p.m., as the eye of the storm was crossing the Upper Keys, the wind at Key West was recorded at 34 mph.

In 1935, Clarence Alexander worked in the local lime fields. On Sept. 2, he had been in the Key Largo community of Tavernier.

While strumming a guitar, Alexander tells a haunting story of his experience during the Labor Day Hurricane in the documentary film “The Deadly Deluge.”

It was early afternoon when the first bands of wind and rain produced by the storm began to strike the Upper Keys. As the afternoon turned into evening and the wind gusts and blankets of rain continued to increase, he and several of his friends sought refuge in what looked like a sturdy building that stood near Tavernier’s small grocery store. According to Alexander, when a group of white people opened the door and entered the building, one of them said to Clarence and his friends, “The coloreds are going to have to leave out of here. There ain’t enough room for the whites.”

Alexander and his small group left the building and went to the railroad tracks, where they found shelter in a boxcar. As the wind intensified and the storm began to howl, the roof of the building beside the small grocery store blew off. The people inside were forced to flee and ran to the same boxcar where Alexander and his group were sheltering. The boxcar rocked back and forth, but they all survived the killer hurricane together. As many as 500 others would not be as lucky.

Most of those who died had been in the Upper Keys — on Windley, Upper Matecumbe, and Lower Matecumbe keys. Not every victim of the killer storm was identified. Some people were swept off the island chain and never seen again. Four of the lesser remembered victims of the storm attempted to ride the hurricane out on Grassy Key. An account of their story was recorded in the Florida Emergency Relief Administration’s “Case Aides Report of General Conditions Observed On Upper Keys From Matecumbe to Key West.”

The document stated, “The only residents living on this key were connected with the Florida East Coast Railway. There was one family of white people called the Favises. These people went to Marathon and were saved. There was also a crew of section Negroes and about four section houses in which they lived. Most of the section Negroes went to Marathon with the foreman, Mr. Davis, but four of them remained and were washed to sea. Learned that the names of these men are: a Negro called ‘Foots,’ a Negro man Jim Ashe, his wife and small child. These four people, as stated, were washed out to sea and to date have not been heard from or found. All of the Negro section houses were completely washed away and the only thing standing on this key is one-half of the white foreman’s house and it will be impossible to repair this structure or rebuild it on the old foundation.”

A mentoring program with a scholarship opportunity

T

ake Stock in Children’s track record of providing scholarships isn’t the only perk for local high school students pursuing their career dreams. As program coordinator Chuck Licis notes, “I like to describe it as a mentoring program with a scholarship opportunity.”

Without funding streams such as those generated from the Upper Keys Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, the chance to attend college might be limited for students who face challenging situations outside the classroom.

Money from the Upper Keys Rotary Club’s signature event to Take Stock alone helps fund two to three scholarships a year. With $40,000 received from the club, Licis said Take Stock is able to purchase scholarships through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, which offers an avenue for eligible organizations to purchase tax-deductible scholarships.

Dollars are matched through the Stanley Tate STARS (Scholarship Tuition for At-Risk Students) program.

And just like that, $40,000 turns into $80,000.

“We identify students in grades 7-10 who are excelling academically and have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average,” Licis said. “They’re crime- and drug-free, have good attendance and good behavior, and they also meet the income guidelines, 185% below the federal poverty level.”

Nearly 300 students throughout Monroe County are currently in the program, and each has a mentor they meet with once a week. Before the pandemic, mentors and mentees would meet in person during lunch time. Now, they meet virtually.

Licis describes the mentors as caring adults who listen and guide students through life skills, problem solving and self-advocacy skills as they work their way through school and prep for college.

“They’re not tutors, counselors, ATMs or Uber drivers,” he said.

Among the many students guided and assisted by Take Stock is Evelyn Betancourt, first-year chemistry teacher at Coral Shores. Following graduation, the 22-year-old, who lives in Key Largo, attended Florida International University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Aside from the scholarship, Betancourt discussed the role her Take Stock mentor played in her development and readiness not just for college, but life. She had many conversations with her mentor over health and books.

“My mentor really helped me understand that I wanted to help people and that there were many ways to do it,” Betancourt said. “One thing I took away from all of our conversations was that she taught me to always find time for myself and to not forget to love and enjoy nature. We are part of the world and we need to protect it.”

One of her fondest experiences came from youth camp in Inglis during middle school.

“I still remember how cold it was and how the counselors made us line up outside the cafeteria and yell ‘H2O’ after telling us what was for dinner,” she said.

“What I took from this experience was learning to step out of my comfort zone and how kind people can be.”

Betancourt said she never thought she’d enjoy teaching as much as she does.

“Now that I am doing it I can’t see myself doing anything else,” she said. “I always try to make sure that my students know that making mistakes is a part of life. I encourage Coral Shores chemistry teacher Evelyn Betancourt is a Take Stock wrong answers in graduate. CONTRIBUTED/Coral Shores High School class and I make sure no one ever feels bad or makes anyone feel bad over them. Wrong answers are opportunities for learning and I try to make sure that my students know this.”

Licis said Take Stock provides opportunities for students who are the first in their families to attend college. They come out of college with minimal or no college debt.

“What we hear from students when they go to school and earn a degree, they are very thankful for the opportunity,” he said.

Established in 1967, the Upper Keys Rotary Club is a vibrant part of the community that focuses on new generations. Through the annual Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, it raises around $200,000 for scholarships to support students in the Upper Keys. Many members are or have been Take Stock mentors, said Rotarian Frank Derfler.

“We understand the value of this program and the match of funds from the Florida Legislature is a spectacular benefit,” he said. “The scholarship program of the Upper Keys Rotary club is broader than the Take Stock program in that we weigh and reward both achievement and need and then we re-evaluate the beneficiaries in each year of their follow-on education."

For the first time in 26 years, Upper Keys Rotary Club’s Gigantic Nautical Flea Market cannot be held in person, so Rotarians are reaching out to the community. The need remains to raise much-needed funds for scholarships for graduating seniors, current college students and those pursuing career technical education.

A

girl scout’s passion for baseball has translated into a service project to assist the Upper Keys Little League program.

With the grace of the little league board, Coral Shores senior and girl scout Jessie Vandergriff, is assisting them with a resilience fund as part of her graduating project with the scouts.

Part of the goal is to drive down registration costs and other expenses to ensure kids can play despite financial hardships families might be facing, especially in times of a pandemic.

Vandergriff entered girl scouts in late 2008, which is also when she started playing baseball. Her young playing career, which started with T-ball at age 5, continued through her teenage years up to her freshman year playing for the Coral Shores High School softball team.

Many of Vandergriff’s baseball seasons were spent under the tutelage of coach Brian Tiedemann. Not only did he coach her through swings, but Tiedemann and Herb Tiedemann, Brian’s dad, also assisted her with service project ideas that included new bullpens at Harry Harris Park – installed in March 2020 with help from donors, Monroe County Parks and Robert Glassmer and local businesses.

As for her current project, Vandergriff said she’s getting the word out in hopes that businesses in the community will help the league and her establish a resilience fund. Initial talks surrounded the idea for a hurricane fund. With the league affected last year by the pandemic, it evolved into something further.

“The board seemed to like the idea of a resiliency fund,” Vandergriff said. “They gave their approval of the project, so now it’s about raising awareness and securing certain donations from businesses.”

Vandergriff added that she’s hoping to get at least 10 sponsors onboard by March 5, which is the UKLL’s opening night.

Ryan Raschein, Upper Keys Little League board chair, said Vandergriff’s project means a lot to the league as it will help push down registration and equipment costs. Roughly 250 kids have signed up for the 2021 little league season, he said. Of all leagues, T-ball, which was free this year, saw the largest number of registrants.

“Registration is one of the biggest things. The more we can fundraise, the lower registration fees and uniform expenses will be,” he said. “Jessie’s helped the little league in the past and wants to continue helping us, and that’s huge. It’s her own drive and helping out the league and this great game.”

Vandergriff hasn’t conducted service projects just for baseball.

A junior library program at Key Largo Library and a drive to collect school supplies for a town in the Philippines devastated by Typhoon Haiyan are other projects Vandergriff completed during her time as a girl scout.

STATE FUNDS SUPPORT TAVERNIER FIRE STATION HARDENING

T

he Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is allocating $818,800 in community development block grant (CDBG)-mitigation funding for a hardening project at Monroe County Fire Rescue Tavernier Fire Station 22.

Specifically, the project will replace eight bay doors and the aging generator system while adding flood panels, impact doors, impact windows and energy efficiency. Station 22 is one of the oldest in Monroe County, constructed prior to the enhanced Florida Building Code, leaving it highly vulnerable to high winds and storm surge.

“Luckily, Station 22 is at a decent elevation, so this grant will allow us to make it more resilient to future storms,” said Monroe County Project Management Director Cary Knight. “This will allow our firefighters

the ability to serve the public faster after a disaster by improving response times, which is key to saving lives.”

In addition to the Tavernier Fire Station 22 announcement, on Jan. 22, the DEO announced it intends to fund the Sands Subdivision road mitigation project for $8.1 million, Tavernier breakwater repair project for $2.1 million, and the Rock Harbor breakwater repair in Key Largo for $1.3 million through CDBG-disaster recovery funds.

The county has other CDBG-mitigation projects that were not included in this funding announcement. The projects include Twin Lakes road mitigation ($7.1 million), Stillwright Point road mitigation ($21 million), Big Coppitt road mitigation ($8.5 million), Public Works maintenance facility relocation ($13.7 million), and the Stock Island Detention Center ($1.3 million).

onroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay announced that his office has received an independent audit that found no errors in its financial operations and procedures for the 18th consecutive year.

The audit is performed every year by independent auditors with no ties to the sheriff’s office to ensure public trust between the agency and taxpayers.

The 2020 audit did not find any deficiencies in its review of all sheriff’s office financial transactions. The sheriff’s office remains fiscally responsible and committed to operating with professionalism, integrity and transparency at the forefront.

“I am continually impressed by our sheriff’s office finance

division which continues to serve the taxpayers of this county,” said Ramsay. “I am committed to transparency with the public and that includes financial transparency.”

The sheriff’s office is also a Triple Crown Award winner regarding its accreditation status.

The Triple Crown Award is given to sheriff's offices which achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Correctional Association, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

Financial excellence is required in keeping such accreditation status.

A

new piece of laser-scanning technology purchased by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will help investigators map crime scenes and give jurors welldetailed computer images of the same.

The device is made by Floridabased tech firm FARO. The scanner rests on a tripod and scans 360 degrees of its surroundings using millions of data points which build a 3D visual color record of a particular space, or in this case a crime scene. The device can scan objects more than 200 feet away while maintaining an accuracy rate of within 1 millimeter. It can be used in daylight or darkness and it also takes still photographs.

The 3D image can then be brought up on a computer screen and shown to jurors who will be able to visit a virtual crime scene

without leaving the courthouse.

Many other law enforcement agencies across the country are using the FARO technology.

The sheriff’s office purchased the $60,000 piece of equipment using fine and forfeiture funds.

The machine does not replace all traditional investigative work done by detectives, but it does create an extremely reliable record of a scene, particularly should questions arise about distances between objects and so forth.

Detectives expect to use the machine in cases very soon.

“I’m excited this agency has this device, which will help us solve and deter crime,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Staying ahead of the criminals is part of the job we’re in and this technology will help maintain that edge.”

KEN WOLFE DEWEY Kenneth Wolfe Dewey, 67, passed away on Feb. 12, 2021 in Miami, Florida. Surprising no one, he stayed forever young, riding out the last moments of his life on a motorcycle, wind in his face, with a belly full of Shiver’s pulled pork and cornbread soufflé.

Ken was born to Frederick Bezner Dewey and Doris Mae Dewey in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on April 9, 1953.

He grew up in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania as the tortured younger brother of Frederick Dewey Jr., who — Ken would most likely want us to note here — did not do many chores. He graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 1971 and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Stanford University in 1975 and a master’s in business administration from the Wharton School of Business in 1978. He was a proud member of the Stanford Zeta Psi, or “Zetes,” an organization which, to this day, we’re not sure exactly what they did except organize elaborate pranks.

Ken married Deborah Leigh Sprang on March 12, 1977, and Debbie and Ken remained happily married for the next 41 years, raising three children along the way. As a father, Ken’s key refrain was that “life is not fair,” a lesson he would completely undercut during the next 40 years by showering his children in love, support and nightly back-scratches. Work and life would take Ken to Houston, Texas; Port of Spain, Trinidad; Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; Sausalito, California; and Key Largo where Debbie served as his devoted IT referent until the day of his death. Fortunately, white polo shirts were available in each and every locale.

Ken is survived by wife Deborah; son Frederick Dewey, and daughter-in-law, Tanya Teslovich of Winchester, Massachusetts; daughter Diane Maender and son-in-law Corey Maender of Cairo, Egypt; daughter Patricia Dewey of Norwalk, Connecticut; five grandchildren: Colton, Tyler, and Lila Maender and Nathan and Annalise Barnhart Dewey; brother Frederick Dewey Jr., and sister-in-law Marcia Dewey of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and niece Christine Dewey and nephew Alec John Dewey of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is predeceased by his mother, father, and beloved cats Roger, Radar and Roger II. Ken started and ended his career in the energy industry. He began his career at Standard Oil of Indiana

(AMOCO) before co-founding an upstream advisory firm, Randall and Dewey Inc. in Houston. He served 12 years as lead director on the board of directors of Energen Corp. During “retirement,” he served as the Ocean Reef Community Association chair from 2015 to 2017, and was a devoted member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. His astonishing work ethic never faltered, something he would attribute to having done all the chores as a kid (see above).

Ken was most well-known by his loved ones for his zest for life and passionate views on, well, everything (but specifically including pontoon boats, peach cobbler, yankees, and Berkeley). He loved to tell jokes — generally, the same ones, often. His love for boating, adventure and carbohydrates lives on in all of his loved ones.

As husband, father, grandfather and friend, he taught us to love deeply, to never take oneself too seriously, to live life to the fullest, and — through it all — to maintain a completely irreverent sense of humor.

A memorial service for Ken will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021 at 4 p.m. in the Carysfort ballroom. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Coral Reef Restoration Foundation, an organization to which Ken was devoted until his death.

Monroe County Employee of the Fourth Quarter announced Gabe Price, an information technology project manager, was awarded Monroe County Employee of the Fourth Quarter. He was nominated for his noteworthy performance and continual demonstration of Monroe County values for being "the man behind the curtain" when virtual meetings began in early 2020 due to COVID-19. Price started working for Monroe County in 2010.

"When on the virtual meetings, he is well-spoken, respectful and helpful to everyone," said Katie Atkins, aide to Commissioner Michelle Coldiron, who nominated him. "Toward the beginning, we were faced with nearly having to cancel a meeting due to an overwhelming number of virtual attendees and Gabe never once seemed overwhelmed or nervous."

Allegiant Air nonstop service comes to Key West Beginning June 9, Allegiant Air is scheduled to add nonstop service from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to Key West International Airport (EYW).

The airport is located in Hebron, Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Allegiant plans to serve the Key West market with twice-weekly flights, Wednesdays and Saturdays, on Airbus A319 aircraft.

"The U.S. Midwest market is traditionally a very strong origin market for the Florida Keys, but Allegiant's new service from Cincinnati opens up easy accessibility and affordable Keys vacations to both Ohio and Kentucky residents," said Richard Strickland, director of airports for the Florida Keys' Monroe County.

"Allegiant's new service from Cincinnati and its new service from Nashville, launching just a week earlier in June, is phenomenal and exciting news for the Keys," Strickland added.

Beginning June 2, Allegiant Air will add twice-weekly nonstop service from Tennessee’s Nashville International Airport (BNA), also on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The airline chose Key West as one of several new U.S. gateway cities. Allegiant links travelers in smallto medium-size cities to world-class vacation destinations with nonstop flights and low fares.

ike many, Trevon Madison, 24, has had challenging times during the pandemic. But he keeps a positive and peaceful attitude through his faith as a Jehovah’s Witness, helping others as an assistant manager at Remedy’s Nutrition in Key Largo, and the simple pleasures of playing ball at the park and creating music.

How long have you lived in Key Largo? Twenty-two years. I was born in Miami.

Do you have siblings? I have a twin brother, Tyrone. But my dad has eight kids altogether, so I have halfbrothers and half-sisters, and there are also my dad’s wife’s kids.

Who was one of your mentors?

My granddad. My mom’s dad. Because of his patience. He wasn’t one to yell at you. He was one to talk to you in a way that got his point across. He didn’t have to raise his voice. He was a hard worker. He took care of my grandma and made sure the bills were paid. He was a really good mentor.

How did you get your job? I had known the owners for a long time.

They are family friends. I approached them when I was 19. I’ve worked there almost 6 years.

What’s your favorite part of the job? Helping people and teamwork.

And we take high precautions in cleaning and being prepped properly. … (We helped people) with the stress of Covid. Helped people find ways to keep their immune system up. That’s always a positive about my life — being able to help people.

There was a lady that came into the store one weekend, and she’s like everybody else, she didn’t want to catch it. That day was the first day she and her husband were out in six months. She came back into the store about three months later to thank me because her daughter got it and was also living with them at the time. She was afraid she might get it, but she was taking everything I recommended to her. And she said that her test came back negative.

What was your worst moment of the pandemic? There’s a lot. (Long pause.) My brother catching it. My twin brother, Tyrone. He got it six months after it started, around September. We don’t live together — he lives in Tavernier. But I didn’t know what it was going to do to him. You hear about all of the pain and the breathing issues. He only lost his sense of taste and smell.

Fortunately, he was not hospitalized.

And I have asthma, so if I catch it, let’s just say I won’t be around any more.

Another “worst moment” — coming home every day to my grandmother and great-grandmother, because I live with them, and not knowing if I have it.

Do you know anyone who died from Covid-19? I’m a Jehovah’s Witness. There are about, say, 7,000 of fellow believers that did pass from it.

I’m family oriented. I grew up around the faith, and you build a bond with a lot of people. Fellow worshipers were all there for one another spiritually, and some of us were physically there, to comfort one another. When you find out that 7,000 people died, it makes you feel the stress and the strain.

What got you through the stress? When my granddad passed in 2018, it was a hard time for my grandma because she was alone, basically, taking care of bills, making sure everything is fixed and cleaned. She’s also a Jehovah’s Witness. I asked her, how does she put up with knowing she doesn’t have my granddad during this pandemic? She just said, “Keep the faith, do not let the issues of this world bother you in a way that makes you turn your back.” This inspired me to keep going.

Also, I’ve been making music for 10 years, at home on a computer. A mixture of hip-hop and techno dance.

I grew up listening to hip-hop and Motown, the Temptations, the Five Heartbeats, the Ovations, Lee Moses, Oscar Toney Jr., Otis Redding, the list is like this (stretches hands up and down). I definitely use music as therapy, for sure, to get through the loneliness of it all.

What’s your favorite music to listen to right now?

Country. Dead serious. Chris Young and Riley Green.

How do you like to have fun? I like to work out.

And being around friends. I play ball at Key Largo Park, baseball or basketball. Throwing a ball around. Things like that. I haven’t had many chances for that, this year and last year.

What’s your favorite food? Chinese food — the crab Rangoon. So good, with fried cheese and crab.

What’s your favorite Netflix show? I don’t watch Netflix. I watch YouTube. I try to learn something new by watching documentaries on World War II, the Vietnam War, something in the past I didn’t know about.

What’s your secret talent that no one knows about? I can wiggle my ears without touching them.

Any thoughts on this historical time, the pandemic or the protests? In 2020, with the elections, our political views, and race protests, it was a very divided year, for sure. It made a lot of people bitter. It didn’t make me bitter, because with my faith I know that being bitter is not going to help the situation. I did not attend any protests as a Jehovah’s Witness because we are politically neutral. And I naturally had to be careful because if I catch Covid, where am I gonna go?

Even though the whole world is going through a pandemic for the first time in history, it’s something that everybody has to experience. It shouldn’t divide us by who we are, our political views, our race, our social stance, our economic situation. We’re all going through this together, so we all should work together to make sure we can all live longer, and make sure we kill the virus that’s killing our friends and family.

Swings turn to sails, and a little coaching, for former MLB player

F

ormer major league first baseman, now Islamorada resident and captain, Doug Mientkiewicz remembers the days riding with his dad to his office next to the Tom Thumb in Key Largo. Stuck in the tape player was Kenny Rogers, and on would come “The Gambler.”

Mientkiewicz hasn’t forgotten a key line in the song that his dad would emphasize: “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right.”

“He would stop and grab my arm and look at me and make a point,” said Mientkiewicz, who’s just one of a few to bring home a gold medal in the Olympics while also earning a World Series ring.

“That still plays in my head. That’s how the passion kicks in for me for everything. That ties into coaching and even charter fishing.”

Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1974, the 12-year major league baseball veteran has called the Keys his home full-time since 2010. But he’s been coming down since the early ’80s, when his uncle owned a lumber business in the Keys and a home on the oceanside in Lower Matecumbe.

From bonefishing on the docks to catching mutton snapper, Mientkiewicz said, it didn’t take much to fall in love.

“I can still picture this image in my head of my dad and I playing catch,” he said. “I missed the ball and it went into the water. In between the ball was a crab with his back against the coral and a bonefish facing him. My ball was spinning in between the two of them. That’s exactly why I love this place.”

Mientkiewicz attended Westminster Christian School where he played football and baseball with Alex Rodriguez. As good as they were in football, Mientkiewicz and Rodriguez’s productivity on the baseball field led them to win a national championship.

While drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992, Mientkiewicz opted to attend Florida State. He was then drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1995 where he played until 2004. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2004, Mientkiewicz caught the final out in a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals — the first World Series win for Boston in some 86 years.

His baseball career also took him to New York, where he played with the Mets and Yankees. He also spent seasons with the

Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. He subsequently entered broadcasting as an analyst in 2010. That followed with a coaching career that started with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2012. His most recent coaching gig was with the Toledo Mud Hens.

Today, Mientkiewicz spends time on his 45-foot Seahunter chasing sailfish alongside his co-captain Willie Nelson (the dog, not the musician), girlfriend Madison Wright, and fellow

fishers. He’s also starting his charter business, Olympic Gold Fishing — the name stemming from the gold medal he won with the USA baseball team during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

“It meant the world to me,” he said. “I always say people win the World Series every year. When you play for your country, it’s a whole different animal. I’ve been fortunate to play for my country three times. Every time I thought it was going to be my last shot, so don’t you go 3,000 miles

without winning.”

Mientkiewicz said he stays in touch with the team to this day.

“We talk at minimum once a week through a group chat,” he said. Every year on Sept. 17 — on the day we won the gold medal — we all toast each other one way or another.”

Mientkiewicz’s admiration for the Olympics goes back to his younger years when it was always on TV in the house. One of his favorite Olympians was Mike Eruzione, captain of the USA

hockey team who scored the game-winning goal against the Russian powerhouse in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Eurizone spent two seasons playing for the Toledo Goaldiggers.

“I had his shirts. He was a god to me,” he said.

With his passion for baseball and Olympics also comes an addiction for sailfishing. Mientkiewicz spent a few months in the Keys with baseball season consuming a majority of the year. He recalled the first time he saw a sailfish coming up on a kite bait.

“The sickness took over,” he said. “Whether we’re fun fishing or tournament fishing, and one comes up, we still scream.

“There’s so many similarities between baseball and sailfishing,” he continued. “Right when you think you might have picked up something sailfishing the day before, you go out and see nothing, or what you thought would work didn’t work.”

Last month, the team aboard Mientkiewicz’s boat took first in the annual Fish for Holly tournament.

“I’m trying to help as much as I can. I was kind of sitting there at the Upper Keys Rotary Club meeting one day when (athletic director) Rich Russell, who invited me, introduced me as a Coral Shores baseball coach. It comes with the territory,” Mientkiewicz said.

We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Hurricane Pride,” and for giving us a glimpse into their world.

What is something most people don’t know about you? One thing most people don’t know about me is that I play for Miami Elite volleyball club in Miami. Volleyball is my favorite sport, and I’m lucky to be able to play on such a great team.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Mrs. Dobson is my favorite teacher of all time. I’ve had her for AVID since my sophomore year. There always seems to be a smile on her face, and you can really tell she loves to teach. Her teaching style makes you want to participate in class and her positive attitude always brightens everyone's day.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education is a great doorway to success; teachers give you knowledge and information, as well as the learning skills to listen and grow.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? I would have to say the dumbest rule as of this school year is that juniors and seniors don’t get to go off campus for lunch. The best rule is that we don't have a uniform and students get to express themselves through their outfits.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores and why are they important to you? My freshman year I started playing volleyball. Playing is important to me because I have met some of my closest friends through volleyball.

What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school are to go to college and play volleyball at a higher level. I am still unsure what I want to study but something in education.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? Someone who works hard. My freshman year was really my first time playing volleyball. The next year I started on varsity. I went to camps, and practiced the whole summer. I continued working hard going into my junior year, and I want to do the same thing going into my senior year as a leader to my team.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I spend most of my free time on the weekends playing in volleyball tournaments. When I don't have a tournament I like to spend time with my family and friends. Watching a movie with my mom and grandma, or going out on the boat with friends.

During the weekdays I enjoy going after school and supporting my friends by watching and cheering them on in games.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I don't think I will make the Florida Keys my permanent home; the reason why is because I like to experience new things and put myself out of my comfort zone. I'm also a fan of cold weather, and as you know below 70 isn't common down here.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10-year reunion? In 10 years I would like to have a good job with financial stability, a great group of friends and coworkers, and a college degree.

As a writer who is soon to release my first book, “Confidence Mastery for Couples — Roadmap to a More Intimate Relationship” (March 9 on Amazon), I have been on a trip down memory lane. Have you heard of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, which used to be at Disney World? Another flashback. That’s how I felt as I was writing my book.

When we moved to the Keys over 11 years ago, we were fresh-eyed and bushy-tailed, so to speak. We quickly

learned that living here and being successful took a lot of trial and error, persistence and grit. We both were hard workers, but it was more challenging than we imagined.

It’s not easy to live in the Keys, and I have always felt people who do not live here think it is easy. Housing is considered expensive, people come and go, and tourism is never a guarantee. Oh! And then toss in the wind, which can affect your business, especially if you are a fishing charter captain.

I have lost track of all the odd jobs and business ideas we have tried since we moved here. Maybe that’s a good thing? Once in a while, I get a reminder. I remember changing the coupon signs at Winn Dixie and Office Depot up and down the Keys to make some extra cash as I was building my sales business. It was a third-party marketing company, and I found the job in the paper, circa 2010. I wonder if that company even exists any more?

I also have lost track of all the people who have come and gone. Some people I liked and was bummed when they moved back north, to be closer to their families or find a better-paying job. I heard two years is the amount of time people stay on average. I believe it, but sometimes you also get a

surprise when you hear someone you thought was “a lifer” is leaving. Then you may forget about the person when all of a sudden, Facebook reminds you! (Hmm … on second thought … not always sure if that’s a good thing.)

The biggest lesson is even though it was challenging and scary at times, we kept going. Somehow, it all works out. And that’s the mental disposition one must take to make it here or anywhere.

Somehow it all works out.

As you go back through your memory bank, think about how it worked out. Even if it seemed scary or sad at the time, I bet at least the majority worked out for the best. And long-term, even if you are still struggling, it may still work out for the best.

You don’t know it yet and that’s what they call faith. You don’t have to be religious to have faith. Having faith is a human mindset anyone can acquire and apply.

The definition of faith in Google is, “complete trust or confidence in someone or something.” What’s fascinating is the more you trust, keep going, and see the results, the more faith and confidence you can build. If you rely on that faith, you can find peace and happiness which will lead you to your best life.

After my recent trip down memory lane, I changed the intro for my Good Karma Success Coach podcast to, “Every day isn’t sunshine and rainbows, but we are living our best lives.” I hope you can find that peace and happiness as well.

FOR PASCAL Scouts take over fallen friend’s STEM fair project, winning first TIFFANY DUONG

ow do you honor a fallen friend?

For Aidan Austin, 15, an Upper Keys student and scout, the answer was to take over his friend Pascal Weisberger’s STEM fair project to bring it to completion. Now, Austin has won first place in the Coral Shores High School STEM Fair and will be presenting the project at the state competition.

Weisberger, a known environmentalist and beloved community member, had started the project in March 2020, at the start of quarantine. He and his father, Ariel Poholek, regularly visited Harry Harris Park to observe how the coronavirus shutdown affected the amount of trash found washed up on the shoreline. Knowing boating was down, Weisberger had hypothesized that the closure would change the origin and makeup of what he found.

“Our overall objective was to look at changes in quantity and distribution of different types of debris washing up in that area of Harry Harris Park during coronavirus, as a proxy for the Keys in general,” Poholek explained.

Weisberger died tragically in May 2020, before he could complete the work.

Austin, Poholek and their Boy Scout Troop 912 decided to take over the project and bring it to completion.

The group went back week after week to conduct cleanups at three specific locations of Harry Harris Park through the remainder of the Keys’ closure to the mainland, sorting, counting and weighing what they found. Austin led the group, with Poholek and TVM science teacher Bobbi Burson and Ocean Studies Charter School science teacher Martha Loizeaux assisting with data collection and analysis.

“It was a lot of hard work, but it was definitely worth it,” said Austin. “In our final

project, we found an increase in trash two months after the Keys reopened, implying that human activity influences the environment when we have high amounts of contact with it.”

Poholek agreed, noting that they found a “sharp spike” and “significant uptick” in plastics after the checkpoint ended and normal boating and public use of the marine environment resumed. During the shutdown, plastic debris made up 28% of total debris found. After the checkpoint was removed, this increased to 52%, Poholek said.

What they found also changed.

“We noticed lots of things coming from abroad, from the ocean,” said Austin. “We found more of them during the shutdown. We could tell the distance they’d traveled because they had foreign languages on them.”

When the Keys reopened, fewer foreign products were discovered and more local trash washed up, instead. More boat traffic and tourism would explain the higher incidence of trash, Austin said.

The project ended up winning first place in the Coral Shores High School STEM fair, which was held virtually this year.

“When I found out I won, I was absolutely ecstatic, I was shaking,” said Austin. “I was shocked, really.

When they announced my name over the loudspeaker, I couldn’t believe it.”

The state STEM fair is the next step.

Through it all, Weisberger’s memory guides his friends and family.

“Environmental issues were very important to Pascal, but plastic debris was something he took a particular interest in,” Poholek told the Weekly. “I know this would’ve meant a lot to Pascal, and it means a lot to me.”

Poholek also noted how the other troop members assisted out of their friendship to both Weisberger and Austin, and how doing so helped them all cope with losing their friend.

“I had known I wanted to do the project regardless, but now that I’ve done it, I feel like I’ve done something to honor Pascal, and that helps to ease a lot of pain,” Austin said.

Key West and Coral Shores played a home-and-home pre-season series on Feb. 12-13. On Feb. 12, Key West traveled to Coral Shores and came away with a 9-1 victory. The Coral Shores boys baseball team opened the season with a late-inning rally in a tightly-contested game against the St. Brendan Sabres on Feb. 8 at Roger Allen Field at Founders Park.

Despite a slow offensive start, the game ended in dramatic fashion. Trailing 2-1 with two outs and bases empty in the bottom of the seventh inning, junior first baseman Javier Gonzalez drew the walk to put the tying run on base. Senior speedster Lucas Dennis was called upon to pinch run for Gonzalez and stole second base right away.

Senior catcher Mario Menéndez came through with a clutch two-strike single to left field in the bottom of the seventh to score Dennis to tie the game. Menendez put himself in scoring position, taking second base on the throw to home.

Starting shortstop and leadoff hitter in sophomore Dylan Bloom jumped on the first pitch with a line drive to right field, scoring Menéndez for the dramatic walk-off win.

“It’s a great start to the season,” said head coach Joe Molinaro. “ The team understands it’s a process to continue to get better.”

Tyler Rodriguez pitched a complete-game four-hitter to earn his first win. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Rodriguez shut down St. Brendan’s bats with six strikeouts.

Bloom had his first multi-hit game of his varsity career with two hits.

The Canes, 1-0, return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. for a matchup against LaSalle.
