A

new piece of laser-scanning technology purchased by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will help investigators map crime scenes and give jurors well-detailed computer images of the same.

The device is made by Floridabased tech firm FARO. The scanner rests on a tripod and scans 360 degrees of its surroundings using millions of data points which build a 3D visual color record of a particular space, or in this case a crime scene. The device can scan objects more than 200 feet away while maintaining an accuracy rate of within 1 millimeter. It can be used in daylight or darkness and it also takes still photographs.

The 3D image can then be brought up on a computer screen and shown to jurors who will be able to visit a virtual crime scene without leaving the courthouse. Many other law enforcement agencies across the country are using the FARO technology.

The sheriff’s office purchased the $60,000 piece of equipment using fine and forfeiture funds.

The machine does not replace all traditional investigative work done by detectives, but it does create an extremely reliable record of a scene, particularly should questions arise about distances between objects and so forth.

Detectives expect to use the machine in cases very soon.

“I’m excited this agency has this device, which will help us solve and deter crime,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

“Staying ahead of the criminals is part of the job we’re in and this technology will help maintain that edge.”

COVID-19 INFECTION RATES FALLING STATEWIDE INFECTION RATE NOW AT ABOUT 7% SARA MATTHIS

he rate of COVID-19 infection in Florida and in Monroe County is falling, no one disputes that. But … why?

One possible explanation is that fewer people are being tested, and so there are fewer positive cases. That’s true, but not at a scale to explain what’s happened.

According to state data, on Jan. 3, about 726,000 tested negative and 110,000 tested positive — representing 836,000 tests. On Feb. 7, the data counts 672,000 tests, of which only 49,000 were positive.

So, the number of people testing has fallen by about 20% in the state of Florida, but the number of people testing positive has fallen by about 55%. The positivity rates are falling too — on Jan. 13, statewide the rate at which citizens were testing positive was 13%. By Feb. 7, the positivity rate was 7%.

The most puzzling aspect of why the rate of coronavirus infection rate is decreasing: no one knows why.

California and Florida have pursued wildly different pandemic strategies, but the outcome — even when adjusted for population — is very similar.

California has been shut down almost continuously, while Florida reopened for business as (almost) usual in October.

Florida has had 8,306 cases and 117 deaths per 100,000 residents. California has had about 8,499 cases per 100,000 and 130 deaths. California has a population of 40 million, while Florida’s population is 22 million.

CORRECTION A story in the Feb. 11 paper misstated the scope of a Marathon ordinance regulating the removal of garbage cans from the curb after pickup. The new law will apply only to “collector roads” — divided or undivided roadways which serve to link arterials with local roads or major traffic generators. In Marathon, there are three such roads — Aviation Boulevard, Sombrero Beach Road and Coco Plum Road.

Marathon passes restrictive irrigation rules

O

n Feb. 9, the City of Marathon quietly passed the first reading of ordinance 202107. Marathon is required to adopt the law if it wants future grant money from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).

The question will be whether it’s worth the price.

The law is lengthy; 11 pages or so. There are tons of detail. But water the lawn on the wrong day, or at the wrong time, and homeowners could find themselves in violation. Going forward, watering will only be allowed after 4 p.m. but before 10 a.m. In Marathon, homeowners with even addresses may only irrigate on Thursday and/or Sunday. Homeowners with odd addresses may irrigate on Wednesday and/or Saturday.

South Florida and the Keys are no stranger to water restrictions during times of drought, but this law is in full effect year-round. When there is another drought, SFWMD will issue a new set of directions.

‘Water restrictions make sense when there are low levels in Lake Okeechobee,” said Councilman John Bartus, who voted against the ordinance with Councilman Mark Senmartin. “I don’t think this law was properly thought through. In Marathon, we take water conservation seriously, and we don’t have the same needs as lush lawns in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach. It just doesn’t make common sense.”

In fact, it doesn’t matter where the water comes from — ground or surface water, from a private well or pump, or from a public or private utility.

There are many other aspects to this law, with so much detail it will be hard to absorb.

For example: – New landscaping can be watered once on the day it is installed. After that, citizens can get dispensation to water new landscaping (installed less than 30 days prior) on any day of the week except Friday. Landscaping that is 31 to 60 days old can be watered

any day of the week except for Tuesday, Friday or Sunday. If challenged, the home or business owner must produce a receipt for the landscaping materials that shows date of purchase and, presumably, of installation.

– Property owners can get around the days and times of watering if they have one of these things: a handheld “self-canceling nozzle,” micro-irrigation (drip) system, rain barrels, cisterns or other rainwater collection mechanisms.

– If property owners use fertilizer, insecticides or other chemicals, they will be able to water in the additives once, unless the manufacturer says it must be more than once. The watering-in must be done on the allowable days and times dictated by the address. If that can’t be done, then the watering must be done by a licensed professional who has posted a notice.

– Property owners can also be cited for “wasteful and unnecessary” watering. Examples include over-watering, leaving an unattended hose on a driveway with water flowing, allowing landscape irrigation water to unnecessarily fall onto pavement, sidewalks or other impervious surfaces.

– The city manager can grant a waiver in 11 instances. For example, if two or more properties share a source of water. Or, for example, if it wouldn’t be conducive for a flea market or church to water on the day of business or worship.

If any waiver is given, it must be posted, of course.

At the city council meeting when this ordinance was discussed, Senmartin addressed enforcement.

“Are we going to have water police? We don’t even have code officers,”

he said. “There is no way we could govern this. We can’t control this if we want to.”

Bartus said the portion of the law that describes the percentage of how much new landscaping must be in a certain zone in order to be considered new was a complete puzzle. “This is stern language from on high,” he said.

Marathon Mayor Luis Gonzalez said the law was described to him as a statutory necessity.

“I’m going to research it more prior to the second reading. What are the repercussions if we don’t go along? There are some things in this law that are out of bounds. I understand that we need water restrictions when there is a water shortage,” said Gonzalez.

The staff report’s background section for the council said, “Applications for funding under the SFWMD’s Cooperative Funding Program for FY2022 will be evaluated based on several factors including the adoption of an ordinance which fully comports with Chapter 40E-24 F.A.C.” According to the SFWMD’s website, the water utility has funded $220 million in budgeted grants for 522 alternative water supply projects in the past 24 years.

Marathon has received about $2.5 million in SFWMD funds between 2006 and 2010.

The funds were used for wastewater, stormwater and water reclamation projects.

The law also states, “It shall be the duty of each user to keep informed as to the landscape irrigation conservation measures within this Article …” That means that ignorance of the law is no excuse. If a property owner unwittingly violates this law, they would be held accountable.

Marathon City Council will have the second reading of its ordinance at the next monthly meeting.

BILL WOULD CHANGE HOW INSURANCE COMPANIES PAY FOR OLDER ROOFS, OFFERING JUST A PERCENTAGE OF ITS VALUE

A

Florida homeowner with a metal roof that was 10 years old, plus one day, would only receive 70% of its replacement value if something should happen, like a hurricane. That could come to pass if Senate Bill 76 makes its way through the Florida Legislature.

Proposed by Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, the legislation would allow insurance companies to change the way they cover older roofs. As written, insurance companies could pay the homeowner what the structure was worth at the time of its demise, rather than the full replacement cost.

“You can legislate whatever you like, but how are insurance companies going to do this?” asked Mel Montagne, president of Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) and a local insurance broker. “Right now, rates are based on replacement value, not cash value.

If you’re going to switch, are you going to charge a lower rate because you’re offering less coverage? I don’t see anybody talking about that.”

The bill outlines a schedule of depreciation for roofs older than 10 years: • 70% replacement value for a metal roof type • 40% replacement value for a concrete tile and clay tile roof type • 40% replacement value for a wood shake and wood shingle roof type • 25% replacement value for all other roof types Right now, if a Keys homeowner were to have a mitigation inspection — where the insurance company assigns credits for solid construction — the metal roof has a warranty of 30 years and a concrete roof is awarded a 50-year warranty.

The 10-year timeframe is ridiculous, said Dion Watson of Keys All Area Roofing.

“Using good quality materials and a good installer — a roof should last much longer than 10 years,” she said.

Montagne said the proposed legislation has unintended consequences. It’s another strike to affordable and adequate insurance in the state of Florida, which in turn has consequences for the real estate market. (See sidebar).

According to FIRM, 35% of about 28,000 claims for Hurricane Irma to Citizens Insurance Corp. were closed without payment.

“That means that the damage was less than the deductible,” said Montagne. That reinforces FIRM’s stance that the strength of Monroe County’s building code is the best in the state, with far fewer hurricane claims.

The real estate market in Florida is hot right now, with many relocating to the Sunshine State due to the pandemic. Any bill that makes insurance policies weaker or raises premiums threatens the industry.

“We have seen real estate deals fall apart in the Keys, once we add up the quotes for flood, wind and homeowners insurance,” Montagne said.

Senate Bill 76 also reduces the amount of time homeowners have to file claims from three years to two years. The bill would also require policy holders to notify insurers at least 60 days before filing lawsuits.

So far, the bill has made it through the banking and insurance committee and is currently in the judiciary committee’s review before moving to the rules committee.

In the coming months, the Office of Insurance Regulation will be setting the 2021-2022 insurance rates for windstorm policies. If the office accepts the recommendations made at the end of January by the Citizens Insurance Corp. board of governors, Monroe County homeowners with existing policies will get to stay under the 10% annual premium hike. But new policy holders would not get the same carve-out.

“New policies written in Florida and in Monroe County could see premiums increase far above that glide path,” said Mel Montagne, president of FIRM (Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe). “With the amount of real estate turnover we’re having these days, everywhere, it means Citizens will be writing a lot of policies at this higher rate. Without a rate cap, many of these people who want to buy Florida real estate are going to be in for some major sticker shock.”

The OIR will make the final determination on the rate that goes into effect on Aug. 1, 2021.

LOCAL PARK REACHES CAPACITY; FRUSTRATION SETS IN No mobs or riots witnessed, per Monroe County sheriff

county park in Tavernier reached capacity and closed for a time on Valentine’s Day, and that didn’t sit well with those trying to gain entry or with nearby residents complaining of the issues that they say arised from it.

A few calls were made to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 14, with the first at 4:40 p.m. from a local resident who showed up to Harry Harris Park only to find that it was closed due to full capacity. According to call records, he was upset the gate was closed and heard that the attendant would call the police on anyone trying to get in.

Another call came in roughly 20 minutes later from another person complaining that park goers weren’t treating the park attendant well. People who were denied entry were rude and used foul language, the attendant told the deputy who responded. Some jumped the fence to gain entry, the attendant confirmed to the deputy.

One call came in to the sheriff’s office around 7 p.m. from a woman who inquired about law enforcement response at the park. Another call around the same hour came in from a man who was locked inside the park.

No arrests were made from the calls made.

Frustration surrounding the park boiled over so much that it drew the Tavernier Community Association to craft a letter to county commissioners in the leadup to its Feb. 17 meeting. The TCA said the situation as witnessed on Valentine’s Day isn’t new, but rather a recurring issue with a lack of adequate management by the county.

“Tavernier Community Association repeatedly asked our former commissioner for assistance with no action,” the letter reads. “We once again ask the county to step up and accept the responsibilities of management of the county’s crown jewel in the park system.”

The letter called for adjusting work schedules to make sure no county employee is working alone under duress from overcapacity crowds, as well as the creation of a parks and recreation department and the hiring of a director.

County Commissioner Mike Forster placed the hiring of a parks and recreation director on the agenda for the Feb. 17 meeting. He also wants to see park attendants who have code enforcement abilities.

“Public Works are running parks in Monroe County, and the fact is it’s not running very well,” he said.

Forster said he’s planning to hold a virtual town hall via Zoom with residents on Monday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m.

“We can’t accept the status quo any more,” he said.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said he recommended various measures to improve the issues at the park in discussion with Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron. They included a sign indicating the park's full capacity and closure before people reach the park; a camera at the front of the gate; having two attendants during busy weekends; and fencing that angles at the top to prevent people from scaling over, among other things.

“There are things that can be done. We made good recommendations to the county,” Ramsay said.

“They (the county commission) decide what to do.”

Ramsay added that he doesn’t believe Valentine’s Day at Harry Harris Park got out of control to the point where there were riots and chaos. He said deputies spoke with the attendant, who said there were people being rude and using foul language. The sheriff said the attendant wasn’t spit on, as some indicated.

Some 250 calls for service were made to Harry Harris Park in 2020, and Ramsay said most of those were self-generated by deputies.

“Three-quarters of the calls were by deputies doing proactive policing,” he said. “Deputies do extra patrols. They’ll call out watch orders.

“We don’t see a violent pattern and out-of-control behavior at the park with thugs and drug dealers,” he continued. “Yes, a couple of people did jump the fence and a couple people pushed through the front gate. That happens everywhere. None are crimes.”

The TCA’s letter concludes by stating that the situation at Harry Harris Park on Feb. 14 was avoidable.

“It is now an issue that can no longer be avoided,” the letter reads. “We have moved closer to a situation of injury, under the current management practices, and it is time to change management practices.”

SCUTES AND SHITE-POKES AT THE BLUE HOLE

I was up at the Blue Hole on Big Pine the other day, standing on the platform, staring at the gator in the shallow water below, watching her nostrils flare ever so slightly as she breathed.

She’s a small gator, 4, maybe 5, feet. From the neck down, out of immediate range of her mouth, the gator was surrounded by a small swarm of fish, all of them dark and less than an inch long, darting in and pecking at her side. It’s nice when you see something out in the wild that looks like a textbook example of a biological phenomenon – in this case, it was something called cleaning symbiosis.

It occurs between two taxonomically unrelated species, when one species – usually a much smaller one – assumes the role of cleaner and the other, larger species becomes the cleaned, or, according to the scientific literature, the client. Basically, the gator gets its scales and scutes cleaned, and the fish make a meal of the algae they remove.

There are three schools of thought as to why cleaning symbiosis happens. Some folks believe it’s an act of selfless cooperation, just two species helping each other out. Some believe it is mutual selfishness, with two species getting something they need, the well-being of the other not figuring into the equation. The third faction believes the cleaner is the only one that benefits, and that the client is either unable or unwilling to make the effort to thwart them – i.e. the gators don’t really receive much benefit from the fish, but the fish don’t do any harm, and it’s nearly impossible for a gator to catch something that small anyhow.

Honestly, I think these three camps may be more personality tests for the proponents of the theories than a crushing scientific question that demands an answer. And I’m not sure why the three evolutionary theories behind cleaning symbiosis have to be mutually exclusive. We as human beings have enough trouble understanding our own motives. Why should the entire natural world’s motives be any simpler?

But, hey, I was an English major. What do I know?

In the summer months, off to the right of the platform at the Blue Hole, there is usually a green heron nest. Sometime in early summer there will probably be a handful of fuzzy chicks there.

I think every nature photographer in the Keys has been to that platform to take a picture. It’s a rite of passage of sorts.

There was no nest visible just then, but a lone green heron was sitting on one of the low branches. I rarely think of the color green when I see green herons. I think instead about how these particular birds are never the same shape twice, a kind of avian Shmoo. In this instance, though, I was thinking about color, specifically a single, slightly fancy word to describe the one I was seeing – aubergine.

Aubergine is, of course, the British word for eggplant, both the vegetable and the color. Eggplant, though, is a punchline type of a word, a word that lands with a splat. Aubergine has grace, style. It just glides out of your mouth and moves on toward better things.

(Again, English major.) But aubergine has nothing to do with green.

Birds aren’t always named for their most dominant characteristic, but rather for the thing that differentiates them from similar birds. For instance, people ask why red-bellied woodpeckers are so named when their bellies aren’t all that red and their really red caps are their most notable feature. It’s because a bunch of woodpecker species have really red caps, but not many have red bellies.

The green heron used to be called the green-backed heron, which makes sense, as all its green feathers are in the back. Like many birds, it has a whole slew of previously used aliases.

It was called “little green heron” for a while, being as it is relatively little in terms of herons, and green. It was called green bittern for a while, because it looked like it could belong in the bittern subfamily of herons, though it does not.

There seem to be two types of green herons – those that are offended by the proximity of humans, and those that are not.

The one at the Blue Hole the other day was clearly unoffended.

It sat and stared back at me, thoroughly nonplussed, with its tangerine-colored eyes. The ones you see in marinas, perched on low hanging boat lines, trying to fish, also fall into the non-offended category. You have to annoy them pretty well to get them to fly off.

(Don’t.)

But other green herons I have encountered are less sanguine.

You cross paths with them, usually unknowingly, and they fly off, exiting the scene in a bit of a huff. These quick departures gave rise to one of their better, no-longer-official names – fly-up-the-creek.

It’s also the root cause of their former name Skeow, because it’s exactly the noise they make when they go.

Sometimes they defecate as they flee, an activity common to several bird species, as it both lightens the load and deters predators. That’s where two of their other discarded names come from – “chalk line,” and my all-time favorite, “shite-poke.”

Poke is another name for a bag. And shite is pretty self-explanatory, though, like aubergine, more of an English than American usage.

The whole matter does beg the question: how could the birding world go with green heron when shite-poke was an option?

WILLIAMS BRINGS TALENTS ‘TO PLACES THAT NEED ME’

ethon Williams says his life has followed a singular track: to be in the right place at the time he’s needed.

This was true back when his community college was launching a film editing suite in upstate New York and it is now, as station manager of Monroe County’s television station, MCTV. “I’ve just always been called to places that need me,” he said, shrugging.

It’s hard to peg him as an IT guy (computer) or TV guy because he’s both.

His background is neatly tailored to his position with Monroe County, though. He said he spends most of his time managing the TV station, but lends a hand when techs are inundated with computer work, as well.

He has a fascinating background — early computer geek, young DJ, student of radio and TV, and fair housing advocate.

It’s the last that brought him to Key West in 2004. In upstate New York, where he was largely raised, he worked for the Urban League and then the Jubilee Homes Land Trust in Syracuse, New York — both relied on his self-taught computer skills.

So, how did he come by those?

“My mother worked for a computer company in the mid-’80s,” Williams said.

“When the company failed, they sent everyone home with a personal computer, including my mother who was an admin.

She brought it home and I asked, ‘What’s that?’ She told me it was a computer and handed me the manual. Believe me, it was rare to find a home computer in the projects in the mid ’80s.”

From there, he took an interest in radio and DJ and rap. He remembers a particular house party, where he was the first DJ in the area to deploy two portable CD players. Upon enrolling at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, he immediately started working at the campus radio station. Within a few semesters, he was the general manager of the station.

From there, he was drafted into the radio and television career track, and away from the humanities he’d been studying.

“The radio and TV program director called me up and told me there had never been a radio station manager that wasn’t enrolled in radio and television classes.

work,” Williams said. “In fact, now that I think about it, they didn’t give me much choice in the matter!”

At Onondaga, Williams was on the frontline of the digital revolution. He remembers the initial radio equipment he had to work with — reel-to-reel machines with “huge dials like a submarine. It was like something out of ‘Das Boot.’” And then, much later, he wandered into an unlocked room that housed three unused, top-of-the-line MacIntosh towers for video editing and taught himself that, relying on cutting and splicing and editing the sample clips embedded in the software.

After college, Williams started his own computer repair and multimedia production company while working at the Urban League and then the Land Trust.

The land trust had a business incubator magnet where Williams taught a variety of computer classes. In 2003, the national conference for like-minded land use programs was held in New York. It wasn’t long before the Bahama Conch Community Land Trust of the Florida Keys called Williams and offered him a temporary gig that led to a year’s contract — setting up its own computer system and rehabbing some machines for a community computer lab.

“I don’t even remember how I got those donated computers working, but I was able to install Windows 98, and cobble together solutions using old computer parts I had in my closet back home,” he said. (Editor’s note: he also used a lot

of technical jargon here, but it went right over our heads.)

Now, Williams has been working for Monroe County for 14 years. In 2019, he was honored as an employee of the quarter.

“Jethon has a can-do attitude no matter what the task,” said Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi.

His work has been instrumental during the pandemic — keeping officials and staff connected when social distancing is required. He realized the necessity for Zoom meetings early on and began making preparations.

Williams credits Monroe County with realizing the importance of a video channel. Back when he was hired, the TV station did nothing but broadcast PowerPoint presentations. Now, citizens can watch county commission meetings on Uverse or Comcast or even the Roku channel. The county has the ability to broadcast live from non-county facilities, and pump out post-hurricane information for viewing by evacuated Keys residents. Those advancements are due to the county’s decision to invest in the equipment and infrastructure as well as Williams’ own efforts.

“It’s important to me that I have the trust and respect of my peers,” Williams said. “And, as a person of color, that trust enables me to make lives better for other citizens.”

Again, it’s that thing about being where you’re needed.

How many dogs is the right number of dogs? Two. I have a black Labrador and a Jack Russell.

LABOR DAY HURRICANE History details African Americans’ storm experiences in 1935

O

n the night of Sept. 2, 1935, the Category 5 Labor Day Hurricane’s eye crossed over Lower Matecumbe and Long Key between 9:20 and 10:15 p.m. The storm’s fury brought 185 mph sustained winds and a tidal surge of about 18 feet. With a barometric pressure reading reaching a low of 26.35, the hurricane is still considered the most powerful storm ever to strike North America. Powerful as it was, the hurricane was also tightly wound. Hurricane-force winds extended over a relatively narrow, though devastating, expanse between Key Largo and Grassy Key. When history guides in Key West talk about the ravages of the 1935 Hurricane in the Southernmost City, they are puffing. At 10 p.m., as the eye of the storm was crossing the Upper Keys, the wind at Key West was recorded at 34 mph.

In 1935, Clarence Alexander worked in the local lime fields. On Sept. 2, he had been in the Key Largo community of Tavernier.

While strumming a guitar, Alexander tells a haunting story of his experience during the Labor Day Hurricane in the documentary film “The Deadly Deluge.”

It was early afternoon when the first bands of wind and rain produced by the storm began to strike the Upper Keys. As the afternoon turned into evening and the wind gusts and blankets of rain continued to increase, he and several of his friends sought refuge in what looked like a sturdy building that stood near Tavernier’s small grocery store. According to Alexander, when a group of white people opened the door and entered the building, one of them said to Clarence and his friends, “The coloreds are going to have to leave out of here. There ain’t enough room for the whites.”

Alexander and his small group left the building and went to the railroad tracks, where they found shelter in a boxcar. As the wind intensified and the storm began to howl, the roof of the building beside the small grocery store blew off. The people inside were forced to flee and ran to the same boxcar where Alexander and his group were sheltering. The boxcar rocked back and forth, but they all survived the killer hurricane together. As many as 500 others would not be as lucky.

Most of those who died had been in the Upper Keys — on Windley, Upper Matecumbe, and Lower Matecumbe keys. Not every victim of the killer storm was identified. Some people were swept off the island chain and never seen again. Four of the lesser remembered victims of the storm attempted to ride the hurricane out on Grassy Key. An account of their story was recorded in the Florida Emergency Relief Administration’s “Case Aides Report of General Conditions Observed On Upper Keys From Matecumbe to Key West.”

The document stated, “The only residents living on this key were connected with the Florida East Coast Railway.

There was one family of white people called the Favises. These people went to Marathon and were saved. There was also a crew of section Negroes and about four section houses in which they lived.

Most of the section Negroes went to Marathon with the foreman, Mr. Davis, but four of them remained and were washed to sea. Learned that the names of these men are: a Negro called ‘Foots,’ a Negro man Jim Ashe, his wife and small child. These four people, as stated, were washed out to sea and to date have not been heard from or found. All of the Negro section houses were completely washed away and the only thing standing on this key is one-half of the white foreman’s house and it will be impossible to repair this structure or rebuild it on the old foundation.”

How long have you been playing on the team? I have been playing soccer for as long as I remember, ever since I was little. I was always kicking a ball. Almost all my family members play and so it really encouraged me to play, too. I started on the JV team at MHS right after arriving in the U.S. in seventh grade.

What do you enjoy about being on the soccer team? What I enjoy most about soccer is being in the field with my team and being able to forget about all of my problems and just have fun doing the thing that I love.

WHO DO WE APPRECIATE? MHS’ newest cheer coach

H

eather Allen, a performer since the age of 9, is Marathon High School's newest cheerleading coach. She’s got the qualifications and the street cred — she’s been a dancer for more than 15 years, was a USO performer in college, and had been a part of the Dallas Cowboy cheerleading team.

“I have always loved working with younger people. I feel the need to take all the experiences I have had and share them with others,” said Allen. “As a coach, you take the role of a mentor. To bring out the best in your kids, and that’s what I strive to do when I work with students. It brings me so much joy to touch the lives of others in a positive way, and not to mention being part of a team!”

Allen said her two daughters, Brooklyn and Kylie, played a role in her decision to become a cheer coach. Brooklyn, a freshman at MHS, is a first-year member of the cheer team. She said it was fun, adding, “I already can't wait until next season.”

The 2020-21 cheer season was full of difficulties due to COVID-19 restrictions but, Allen said, the team performed admirably.

“To see how quickly the students learn, adapt and grow is so amazing,” Allen said. “They are stronger, more confident and really look out for each other as a team. The look of joy when they learn a dance in 20 minutes and perform it that same evening is so amazing!”

t’s been two long years, but Carlos Garcia’s 7 Mile Buffet is finally open in Marathon.

“It was one thing after another,” said the owner, also chef, of Marathon’s newest restaurant on the west end of town. “But it’s finally open.”

It is, indeed, a buffet. Guests are required to wear plastic gloves as they

serve themselves anything from yellow rice to moro (rice and beans) to carne con papa (meat and potatoes) or fricase de pollo (stewed chicken dish).

Certainly, all the Cuban favorites are there, but Garcia likes to say the restaurant has more of an international flair. Guests can heap their plates high with plantains — the right amount of buttery, sweet and crispy — or chicken wings. There’s a four-pot soup bar, taquitos, shrimp, scallops,

fried rice, pasta, and ice cream at the end.

Everything is very flavorful.

And, at 7 Mile Buffett, the flavors don’t run together as sometimes happens at other buffet restaurants. Each dish is distinct and tasty. Diners can heap their ceramic plates with as many goodies, as many times, as they like. Waitresses dart here and there, filling drink orders, removing used plates and greeting guests.

On a recent weekday at lunch, it catered to a little bit of everybody — tradesmen, families, professionals.

The eatery has been reworked since it formerly housed a Mediterranean restaurant. The space is bright and airy, with plenty of seating. There is a fixed price for breakfast ($12.95), lunch ($14.95) and dinner ($18.95). At the moment, the eatery has soft drinks and coffee available and hopes to secure a license for adult beverages, soon.

There is also an a-la-carte dessert case that looks scrumptious.

t is no real mystery that art often provides a connection among science, geometry and math, history and the humanities. And Ecuadorian artist Favio Caraguay, who currently lives in Marathon with his wife and two daughters, seems to connect them all.

Caraguay divines connections between the geometry of the natural world and complex philosophical principles few other artists try to interpret on such a deep level. His creations draw on fractal geometry among other disciplines that stem from his education in both fine arts and anthropology.

He studied at University of Cuenca, Ecuador, where he earned a master’s degree in art. His wife, Tamara, is a college proFavio Caraguay fessor who often collaborates with Favio intellectually on both personal and professional levels. Caraguay has been working at his creative endeavors for most of his life and has a body of work that spans the globe. His work has been recog-

nized with the Eduardo Kingman Riofrio Award and he has exhibited around the world — Chicago, Paris, Lima, Venice, Madrid and numerous other cities.

Caraguay’s chosen media include photography, ink drawings, acrylic on canvas, watercolor on board and pencil on paper. In defining himself as an artist, he said, “I carry with me a millennial wisdom that transmits itself through my contemporary artistic expressions.”

Most of his work ranges from small odd-sized canvases to some works in the three- to four-foot range with pricing from $100 to $500, on average. Caraguay’s designs are often full of vivid chromatic layers and combine geometric shapes as well as one-, two- and three-point perspective concepts into highly detailed and wildly complex designs. His work often includes repetition, reflection, metamorphosis and occasionally even uses tessellations (interlocking positive and negative shapes) in a style that is all its own.

Even to the untrained eye, many of his creations bring about a sense of awe. Though some of Caraguay’s work echoes that of the famous Dutch mathematician and crystallographer Maurits Cornelis Escher, Caraguay’s work is original in concept and creation.

Swings turn to sails, and a little coaching, for former MLB player

F

ormer major league first baseman, now Islamorada resident and captain, Doug Mientkiewicz remembers the days riding with his dad to his office next to the Tom Thumb in Key Largo. Stuck in the tape player was Kenny Rogers, and on would come “The Gambler.”

Mientkiewicz hasn’t forgotten a key line in the song that his dad would emphasize: “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right.”

“He would stop and grab my arm and look at me and make a point,” said Mientkiewicz, who’s just one of a few to bring home a gold medal in the Olympics while also earning a World Series ring.

“That still plays in my head. That’s how the passion kicks in for me for everything. That ties into coaching and even charter fishing.”

Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1974, the 12-year major league baseball veteran has called the Keys his home full-time since 2010. But he’s been coming down since the early ’80s, when his uncle owned a lumber business in the Keys and a home on the oceanside in Lower Matecumbe.

From bonefishing on the docks to catching mutton snapper, Mientkiewicz said, it didn’t take much to fall in love.

“I can still picture this image in my head of my dad and I playing catch,” he said. “I missed the ball and it went into the water. In between the ball was a crab with his back against the coral and a bonefish facing him. My ball was spinning in between the two of them. That’s exactly why I love this place.”

Mientkiewicz attended Westminster Christian School where he played football and baseball with Alex Rodriguez. As good as they were in football, Mientkiewicz and Rodriguez’s productivity on the baseball field led them to win a national championship.

While drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992, Mientkiewicz opted to attend Florida State. He was then drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1995 where he played until 2004. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2004, Mientkiewicz caught the final out in a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals — the first World Series win for Boston in some 86 years.

His baseball career also took him to New York, where he played with the Mets and Yankees. He also spent seasons with the

Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. He subsequently entered broadcasting as an analyst in 2010. That followed with a coaching career that started with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2012. His most recent coaching gig was with the Toledo Mud Hens.

girlfriend Madison Wright, and fellow fishers. He’s also starting his charter business, Olympic Gold Fishing — the name stemming from the gold medal he won with the USA baseball team during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

“It meant the world to me,” he said. “I always say people win the World Series every year. When you play for your country, it’s a whole different animal. I’ve been fortunate to play for my country three times. Every

time I thought it was going to be my last shot, so don’t you go 3,000 miles without winning.”

Mientkiewicz said he stays in touch with the team to this day.

“We talk at minimum once a week through a group chat,” he said. Every year on Sept. 17 — on the day we won the gold medal — we all toast each other one way or another.”

Mientkiewicz’s admiration for the Olympics goes back to his younger

years when it was always on TV in the house. One of his favorite Olympians was Mike Eruzione, captain of the USA hockey team who scored the game-winning goal against the Russian powerhouse in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Eurizone spent two seasons playing for the Toledo Goaldiggers.

“I had his shirts. He was a god to me,” he said.

With his passion for baseball and Olympics also comes an addiction for sailfishing. Mientkiewicz spent a few months in the Keys with baseball season consuming a majority of the year. He recalled the first time he saw a sailfish coming up on a kite bait.

“The sickness took over,” he said. “Whether we’re fun fishing or tournament fishing, and one comes up, we still scream.

“There’s so many similarities between baseball and sailfishing,” he continued. “Right when you think you might have picked up something sailfishing the day before, you go out and see nothing, or what you thought would work didn’t work.”

As busy as he is out on the water, Mientkiewicz hasn’t shied away from the game of baseball. In a Canes uniform, he can be seen directing the high school baseball team out on the field while giving players pointers as a member of the coaching staff. His son, ninth-grader Steel, plays for the team.

“I’m trying to help as much as I can. I was kind of sitting there at the Upper Keys Rotary Club meeting one day when (athletic director) Rich Russell, who invited me, introduced me as a Coral Shores baseball coach. It comes with the territory,” Mientkiewicz said.

We are the guys, girls and clowns you saw out on U.S.1 with the funny hats asking for donations from passers-by at the stoplights on the corner of 107th and 109th streets. We also received donations at Winn-Dixie.

Every penny we collected goes to the support of Shriners Hospitals and especially the Transportation Fund at Mahi Temple. These funds are used ex-

clusively to transport Keys and South Florida children to the Shrine Hospital in Tampa or to one of the other Shrine Hospitals scattered around the country. At these hospitals, children are given completely free, state-of-the art orthopedic care and burn treatment.

The Transportation Fund ensures that the children are able to get to the hospitals for their care and follow-up treatment without any cost to them or their families.

Our local support, through generous donations, helps us continue to make sure that this perfect charity serves our children today and in the coming years. A special thanks to all that helped us raise over $16,000 that day.

SEX, DRUGS AND PALM TREES Collection celebrates ’70s and ’80s Key West

I

’m not exactly a green plantain, but as someone who landed in Key West a little over eight years ago, I also don’t yet have much Conch cred. So, when confronted with tales of the glory days of my adopted island, I find myself sometimes leaning toward petulant teen, giving an inward eye-roll at the rose-colored stories of the 1970s and ’80s. Until recently. My latest read may have just changed my outlook.

Rita Troxel’s book, “Home at the End of the World,” is a collection of stories from that era, written by those who lived it, and lived to tell about it. Each account retains the author’s original voice — some eloquent to the point of poetics, some jarring, some just drop-dead-drunken hilarious. It only takes a few stories to create the arc and evoke a vivid image of what was (I have to admit) a truly singular era in Key West’s history.

Troxel came up with the concept over 15 years ago. “We would have conversations and inevitably it would go back to us recounting stories and contradicting one another’s versions.

I thought, ‘I need to start gathering these stories.’

People have passed, people were aging, people were forgetting. It became evident that this was an important era to document.” Social media had yet to take hold, so Troxel set out to gather stories via word of mouth. As word spread, she would come home to discover literary treats — a stack of papers from Tony Yaniz crammed into her mailbox or a typed story mailed from Amsterdam.

For artist John Martini, one of the earliest contributors who penned his story, “A Spiritual Center,” 15 years ago, looking back also means looking forward. Martini describes the ’70s and ’80s as a transitional period, during which Key West forged its identity and developed what would become its creative legacy. “Key West was built with a lot of energy, a lot of smarts.” Martini sees that spirit being carried on by subsequent generations, though he understands the hints of hesitation between generations. He recounts one of his first days in Key West, sitting at Fogarty’s, 1. In ‘Home at the End of the World,’ Jamie Alcroft recalls great impromptu feasts in the mid-1970s.

filling out postcards for friends back home. The bartender picked up on his new island shine and leaned over to chide him for arriving too late —“oh yeah, you’re arriving and I’m outta here. You shoulda been here in the ’60s!” It’s hard to say where that bartender ended up. Martini, on the other hand, still lives on the island he first called home in the ’70s, sharing tall tales from the past and keeping a keen eye on the future with projects like “Reimagining Key West,” a platform seeking ideas for creative reform and sustainable solutions for preserving island life.

For other contributors, the process of committing their tale to print is warm nostalgia, a way of revisiting old friends, old haunts. Andrea “The Greek” Weitz wrote her piece, “Good Deeds,” as both a reverie and a tribute to friends who became family. “The quality of friendship is different down here than in the rest of the world. In other places, it’s like ‘friendship lite.’” Those friendships nurtured her and shaped the life she lives and loves to this day. And to hear her tell it, it’s been a wild ride so far. “I feel like I’ve lived a minimum of 10 lifetimes in my 69 years.”

As dedicated friends kept the emotional stories pouring in, Troxel “Home at the End of realized she truly had a project on the World” is availher hands. The success of the book’s voice can be attributed to Troxel’s immaculate curation, and to her choice to preserve not just the tone, but also the verbatim descriptions she received. She told each author that the only changes that would be made would be spelling and minor grammar corrections. Their stories were their stories, as is. It’s a confident choice that sets the collection apart stylistically. Says Troxel, “We pulled no punches. Everyone was very honest with their stories — we wanted the raw living of life in the Keys. We always knew when we were in Key West that the ’70s and ’80s were special, but we didn’t realize the depth of our impact, both ours on the community and the community on us.”

When asked about her own story, which sets the stage early in the collection, she laughs lightly and simply adds, “We all have a story why we came here. It was a wild time. We were so young.”

Legacy bequest benefits gardens, animals, literacy, more A $1.3 million legacy gift from the late Dr. Patricia Major to the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) will support the programs and services of numerous nonprofit organizations and benefit residents throughout the Keys for years to come. Dr. Major’s funding will provide aid for the homeless, preserve native flora, protect animal welfare, supply healthcare for critical care patients, promote literacy, provide tropical gardening education, and more. Dr. Major was a physician who lived and worked in Key West for more than 40 years until she passed away in late 2018.

CFFK will administer the funding through annual operating grants to the nonprofits. “Dr. Major’s gift is a perfect example of how CFFK works with people to leave a legacy here that supports their passions and helps the place they love into future generations,” said Dr. Susanne Woods, Chair of the Community Foundation. “We are grateful that Dr. Major entrusted CFFK to fulfill her wishes and help so many throughout the Keys benefit from her generosity.”

REMEMBERING A SOULFUL BANDMATE

don’t usually listen to my old music, but today I’m making an exception. Currently playing in the background as I write this column is the album I put out with my old band, “John Bartus & Storm Watch • Live at the 2009 Marathon Seafood Festival.” The music is bringing back some wonderful and bittersweet memories of performing with some amazing musicians and good friends … and is especially emotional today after learning of the passing of Marc Davis.

I first saw Marc at an early-2000s July 4th Celebration as he was encouraging young musicians to play their best. At the time, he was the band director for Marathon High School and was in charge of coaxing music out of youthful hands and voices. He was really engaged with his students, dressed in a white button-down shirt and skinny black necktie, long gray hair flowing with the wind. As we got to know each other better, I found out he was a pretty decent keyboard player who possessed one of the most soulful voices I’d ever heard — equal parts Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong.

Not long after, the keyboard and bass chairs opened up in Storm Watch. I’m pretty sure it was Glenn Faast who brought Marc into the band. Marc’s son Christian followed soon after, playing both bass and amazing guitar. Marc was an instant fit, bringing with him some great songs other bands just didn’t cover, like Steely Dan’s “My Old School” and Toto’s “Rosanna” and “Africa.” His irreverent sense of humor fit right in with the band as well. Marc also wrote songs that we played, and he and Christian made that band both fun and musically exciting for Glenn and me.

We had a lot of fun and made some great music.

Playing live was one of Marc’s passions. But so was music education. Marc had the knowledge and skills to both explain the intricacies of music and inspire young musicians to want to play.

When Christian and I switched instruments, he lit up any venue we were playing with some amazing and incendiary guitar. He was literally smoking hot on those strings, and blew people away every time we played. He also learned very early the nuances and subtle phrasing that made the guitar parts for songs like the Eagles’ “New Kid In Town” and Steely Dan’s “Hey, Nineteen” so essential and tasty.

Christian would likely be the first to say that he got his love of music (and the talent to play it beautifully) from Marc. They played great together, and Marc encouraged Christian to explore making music his life’s work as well. As one might suspect, Christian has followed his father’s dual path of both performing musician and music educator. Worthy legacy, indeed.

So it hit me like a gut punch when I found out about Marc’s passing literally minutes before I took the stage at last Sunday’s concert in Key Colony Beach. Like all musicians, myself included, Marc was a complex individual. It likely has to do with chasing the muse we all follow — something non-musicians just can’t understand. After Christian’s graduation and Marc’s leaving Storm Watch, he remained active in the local music scene. Marc played stages at local venues and in the worship band at the Methodist Church, and he would occasionally send me the funniest texts and tag me in his Facebook messages.

As I listen to our 2009 Seafood Festival Storm Watch set, I am reminded of just how good a band we were, and just how big a talent (and heart) Marc had. Rest in peace, my brother. I hope you finally found that muse.
