According to NBC Miami, 1 million doses of COVID-19 will be shipped to Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies in Florida this week. The shipments are being received as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. The program aims to speed up vaccine distribution and eventually expand to 40,000 pharmacies. Nationwide, 6,500 pharmacies will be receiving the vaccine.

PUBLIC INPUT MEETINGS COULD BEGIN IN 5 TO 6 WEEKS

But the company leading the Duval Street revitalization project expects to begin gathering public input about priorities and ideas in the next six weeks or so, Bruce Reed of KCI Technologies told the city commissioners on Feb. 2. City officials signed a contract with KCI for the Duval Street project in November 2020.

The company’s plan to solicit input from all users of Duval Street — residents, business owners, tour conductors, delivery drivers and others — was one of the reasons the commissioners selected KCI to manage the Duval Street upgrades, Mayor Teri Johnston reminded the commission on Feb. 2. Commissioner Sam Kaufman asked Reed to give the commissioners plenty of notice about upcoming public meetings so they can share the information with their constituents.

“We will create a public outreach plan that is engaging and accessible,” KCI states in its response to the city’s request for qualifications (RFQ). “The public outreach will be guided by our marketing campaign of #DestinationDuval, #DowntownDuval, and #DesignDuval to create excitement about the future of Duval Street.

“Using social media and traditional forms of communication, we will begin an outreach campaign. We will contact all local news outlets to broadcast opportunities for public involvement. …We will also create an interactive website that will include polls about the financial market, user expectations and design

scenarios. … The design process will begin with a charrette/design workshop open house,” the KCI proposal states. “We envision creating a three-day process with city staff that will be held in a pop-up design studio on Duval Street. We will identify an available storefront or restaurant space that will allow residents, business owners and even tourists to drop in and participate.

The proposal also says, “We will identify opportunities for public art and transformational elements along the street.”

In a community where common ground can be a precious commodity, the process could be an arduous one, although nearly everyone seems to agree that repaving the town’s main tourism thoroughfare should be the top priority.

“The goal of the project is to renovate and revitalize Duval Street,” the city’s RFQ states, “to increase opportunities for public use as an iconic civic space for leisure, commerce and tourism; address the infrastructure which will allow for reasonable maintenance frequency and reduce costs to businesses and taxpayers; improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles; and maintain mobility for desired transit opera-

tions for all users.”

In its response, KCI states, “Our approach to the transformation of Duval Street will include identifying design elements to bring visitors from the Lower Duval Street area all the way to the Upper Duval Arts District. Imagine art suspended in the air along the middle of Duval Street coaxing visitors to explore the entire street, the paths with shade trees, with flexibility for all modes of transportation.

The response added, “when we design streetscapes, we need to plan for cars, delivery trucks, trolleys, golf carts, bicycles and pedestrians. We also design for the special celebratory events that turn great streets into linear pedestrian plazas.

“Our approach will take into consideration the residents surrounding Duval Street, the cultural arts businesses, the retail and dining opportunities, and the entertainment establishments. One size will not fit all. Additionally, the design will find ways to provide connectivity to Mallory Square, Pier B, Bahama Village, the Historic Seaport, and beyond Old Town. A priority of this project is to bring residents to Duval Street and make access easy, enjoyable and frequent.”

JOIN THE CLUB BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MOVES TO BAYVIEW PARK

The Boys & Girls Club of Key West moved into its new home at Bayview Park on Feb. 1. The newly renovated facility features activity rooms, offices, an outdoor dining area and adjacent playground.

t’s been years in the offing, but the Boys & Girls Club of Key West on Feb. 1 finally moved into its new home at Bayview Park. The newly renovated building includes several activity rooms, office space, an outdoor dining area, adjacent playground and ballfields.

“We’re currently serving 57 kids after school, but our numbers are increasing now that we’re in our brand new facility,” executive director Judy Leggett said.

The after-school program includes a drama club, STEM enrichment experiments, a nutrition class offered by SOS Community Kitchen, diversity initiatives, fitness classes and community service projects.

The club is complying with all CDC and school district requirements for COVID. All kids wear masks and can constantly be heard patrolling and reminding each other to “pull your mask up.”

For years, the club that offers afterschool care for working families was housed at the deteriorating Reynolds School, which remains part of the Monroe County School District.

The club’s move to Bayview Park is part of a three-pronged property swap approved in 2016.

The school district agreed to give the city of Key West two accessory buildings on the Glynn Archer School campus, which became the Key West City Hall.

In exchange for those buildings, the city

pledged to provide permanent space at Bayview Park for the Boys & Girls Club.

The city’s accommodation of the afterschool program allows the school district to reclaim, renovate and repurpose the Reynolds School building at South and Reynolds streets.

In February 2019, then-superintendent Mark Porter said the school district planned to move the alternative education program from Key West High School to Reynolds School when the Boys & Girls Club moved out.

“The plan that was discussed was moving alternative education into the building when it was ready,” school board member Mindy Conn told Keys Weekly on Feb. 9. “We haven’t made any final decisions yet. There needs to be a lot of work done on the building before it can be re-inhabited.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Key West is seeking donations for its new home at Bayview Park. Needed items include an ice maker, kid-friendly furniture, a conference room table and gaming chairs for the kids. CONSISTENCY IS KEY TO TOM FLIP’S KEY WEST PODCAST

T

ry listening to an episode of Tom Flip’s Key West Podcast without spending the rest of the day with its simple but catchy theme song running through your head. It’s not possible, which is why Flip gives credit throughout the episodes to its composer, Miguel Perez.

Anything goes on the podcast Flip started in November 2020, after teaching himself the technical requirements that have sent plenty of would-be podcasters running for the hills, their new microphones barely unpacked.

Other than the theme song and a single question that starts off the conversations Flip has twice a week, nothing is off-limits. There’s profanity, tangents, complaints about Key West’s parking issues and fond, if foggy, memories of former bars, first apartments and bad bosses.

“I always start with the same question — What brought you to Key West? — because everyone has a Key West story. It’s almost that mandatory elevator pitch you have to be able to tell a tourist whenever they ask,” said Flip, who honed his own Key West story while bartending at El Meson de Pepe and while taking film photos in the 1990s of tourists boarding snorkel boats.

“I was working for Ron Scott of Pro Photo,” Flip recalled during a recent podcast interview with yours truly.

“We were still shooting film, so I’d take pictures of people boarding snorkel boats and getting their fins and masks.

Then, while the boat was out, I’d race over to Pro Photo on upper Duval Street to develop the prints with the boat’s logo printed on each. Then I’d race back down to the dock and have the prints set up on an easel when the boat returned. Crazy times,” Flip said.

His current professional set-up is much more comfortable, ensconced as he is in his Southard Street kitchen, with a smoking porch, a sweet dog and two microphones set up on a high-top cafe table.

Flip typically does two hour-long interviews a week, then spends a few days editing each one. Guests have included Joe Madaus of Comedy Key West, photographer Nick Doll, Landon Bradbary, Dionte Dunning, Audrey “Super Girl” Samz, Beth Rooney, this newspaper editor and a dozen others.

“So far I’ve been interviewing people I know, but I want to start branching out to people I’d like to get to know,” Flip said, proud of the fact that his is one of very few Key West-centric podcasts that has survived more than a few months. “Consistency is key. Once you start skipping episodes, people stop listening. It’s definitely a commitment, and way more work than someone thinks when they, ‘Hey, I want to do a podcast and just rant on a microphone each week.’”

There is some ranting on Flip’s episodes, but mostly sarcasm, shared experiences and locals’ look at life in a tourist town.

he Monroe County Department of Health has confirmed that all five Publix grocery stores, including the one in Marathon, and the Winn-Dixie grocery stores in Key West and Tavernier will be receiving allotments of COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines are being allotted under the Federal Pharmacy Program late this week, the agency said, but could not confirm how many doses of the vaccine will be shipped or when they will be offered to the public.

According to a Miami news source, 1 million doses of the vaccine were shipped to Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies in Florida this week under the same federal program mentioned above.

Again, it’s unclear how many vaccines will be available in the Keys.

Also, the online Publix vaccination registration time has been moved back an hour from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Online registration is Wednesday and Friday mornings at publix.com/covidvaccine/florida.

FAMOUS SHIP’S MISSION WAS TO RETURN FREED SLAVES TO AFRICA BRAD BERTELLI

resident James Monroe, on March 3, 1819, signed “An Act to Protect the Commerce of the United States, and Crimes of Piracy.” The act gave the U.S. Navy the ability to establish the West Indies Squadron. The mission of this specialized force was to combat both piracy and the slave trade. Commodore James Biddle was named its first commander.

One of the ships assigned to Biddle was the schooner Alligator. The ship-of-war, built in the Boston Navy Yard and commissioned in March 1821, was armed with 12 cannons. The Alligator’s inaugural mission was not a military one but one of a humanitarian nature. The schooner escorted representatives of the American Colonizing Society to the west coast of Africa. The objective of the society, founded in 1817, was to repatriate freed slaves. The purpose of the journey was to find land on which to establish a colony. In 1847, that colony was recognized as the Republic of Liberia.

Before the Civil War, it was legal to own slaves — to buy and sell people. Decades earlier, several countries had banned the smuggling of human cargo across international waters. By 1827, the international slave trade had been illegal in Spain for seven years, the United States for 19 years, and Great Britain for 20 years. Against the law or not, the practice did not end. For instance, Spanish-held Cuba, in need of an abundant supply of plantation labor, paid little heed to the prohibition.

In 1860, the Navy apprehended three U.S.-based ships attempting to smuggle human cargo to Cuba. The ships Wildfire, William, and Bogota had more than 1,400 African refugees on board. They were given a military escort to the nearest American port of entry, Key West. In 1860, Key West had a population in the neighborhood of 3,000 people, and the sudden introduction of 1,432 refugees pushed the community beyond its limits. With nowhere to house such a large, sudden influx of people, many of whom were suffering from illness and malnutrition due to being packed into the holds of slave ships like chattel, Key West’s people worked to build housing and provide food, clothes and medical attention.

During the refugees’ nearly three months on the island, 294 died. They were buried in shallow sand graves at what, in 1860,

was an undeveloped area of the island. Eighty-five days after arriving, the remaining refugees were once again boarded on to ships. After sailing out of the harbor, a course was set for Liberia where, by 1867, the American Colonizing Society had worked to repatriate 13,000 freed slaves.

In 1861, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers surveyed an area on which to build the Civil War era fortification West Martello.

The map they created was marked with X’s identifying the location of the “African Cemetery.” When construction on the fort began the following year, human remains were uncovered in shallow sand graves, moved to an empty field nearby, and largely forgotten for more than 100 years.

Based on rediscovered documents, historians and archaeologists theorized that all of the grave sites had not been covered by the red-bricked West Martello and that it was likely additional graves were beneath the sand at neighboring Higgs Beach. In 2002, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum organized an archaeological investigation. Using ground-penetrating radar, 15 shallow grave sites were discovered buried about 2 to 3 feet under the sand and measuring 5 to 6 feet in length. They were left undisturbed, and in 2007 the African Cemetery Memorial was installed to protect and commemorate the burial site, honor those buried beneath the sand in 1860, and tell this important story.

Again using ground-penetrating radar, human remains that had been moved during construction of the West Martello site were rediscovered in shallow graves on the other side of what is today Atlantic Boulevard. The land had become a public dog park. The dog park has been relocated and plans have been made to reroute Atlantic Boulevard around the burial site to better honor the entirety of what has become of the cemetery.

As for the schooner Alligator, shortly after returning from its African mission, it left its mark on the Florida Keys. Reassigned to the West Indies, the Alligator engaged pirates off the coast of Cuba in 1822. After rescuing American merchant ships and escorting the rag-tag fleet back to America, it ran aground at a reef offshore of the Matecumbe keys. Today, that reef is known as Alligator Reef, home to the second-largest lighthouse marking the Florida Reef, Alligator Lighthouse.

JAIL DIRECTOR KEENA ALLEN GIVES THE SAME RESPECT SHE GETS

eena Allen’s office could belong to a beloved school principal or guidance counselor, its shelves packed as they are with mementos, a ceramic cross and decades of awards and certificates.

But Allen’s crisp, green uniform and the title on her office door — director of inmate services — quickly make it apparent that Allen deals not with troubled students in detention, but with troubled adults in the detention center — the jail, the joint, the slammer, or, as the facility is affectionately known by locals, the Stock Island Hilton.

“Ms. Allen,” or “Director Allen,” as she’s known at work, is a sweet badass whose eyes smile brightly behind her COVID mask — until someone downstairs crosses a line.

“I learned long ago that I’ll never know someone’s whole backstory or the whole situation that brought them here,” Allen said. “I don’t look up their cases and I don’t judge them. That’s not my job. I treat them like the human beings they are, with the same level of respect they show me.”

Allen joined the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections deputy in 1990 after completing a tour in the U.S. Army. (See? Badass.)

“Back then, we were still in the old jail on Whitehead Street,” Allen recalled. “That was like the old-time prisons, with the clanking doors, bars and some crowded dormitory-style units.”

Two particular inmates stand out in her memory from the early days, when she was a new deputy at the old jail.

“One guy’s nickname was ‘Razor Face,’” Allen said. “He had tried to cut someone with a razor, but instead got his own face all sliced up. He was trouble, always angry, always in lockdown. And that was scary in the beginning for me.”

Allen remembers another inmate, a “frequent flyer,” who returned regularly for being drunk in public.

“He was a big, burly, homeless man,” she said. “And he’d get drunk and arrested every once in a while so he could come in and get a shower, a shave and a couple meals, like the old ‘three hots and a cot’ scenario. He was always good to me. He followed my rules and always did what was expected of him. He reminded me of the old gentle giant cliche.

“Then, once we started entering fingerprints in the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), it turned out he was wanted for murder in California and had been hiding out as a homeless guy in Key West,” Allen said, shaking her head at the memory.

Overcrowded and crumbling, the old jail closed in 1994, when the current detention center opened on College Road, next door to the sheriff’s office headquarters.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay was making the rounds in the detention center on Feb. 9 and poked his head into the conference room while Keys Weekly was speaking with Allen.

“She’s fantastic,” Ramsay said. “Always up. Always smiling. Always bright. I swear, she never seems to have a bad day. We’re lucky to have this woman.”

So are the inmates whose programs and services Allen directs, everything from their mail, phone calls, visitation, laundry and library access, to AA and NA meetings, the successful fatherhood initiative, religious services and kosher meals for Jewish inmates — “actual Jewish inmates,” Allen clarifies, “not the folks who try to game the system by claiming they’ve converted to Judaism just to get a kosher meal.”

After working for years as a detention deputy inside the jail, Allen was promoted through the ranks to records supervisor, records director and finally to director of inmate services.

“I work with an amazing team of people, and we all came up through the ranks together and have worked together in the trenches, so we know what each other is dealing with,” Allen said. “I simply love my job; I always have. I only have three years left until retirement, but who knows? I may wait a year after retirement, and then come back.”

Allen has seen classmates from Key West High School get fingerprinted and booked into the jail. She’s had the children of her friends in the jail and some of her own friends as well.

“I’m not here to judge,” she said. “The courts do that. And I always remind myself that we’ve all likely done something at some point that could have landed us here. We’re all human and we all deserve respect when we give it.”

T

he world feels warmer when Peter Vey paints it.

Pastel shutters on white wooden houses soften the dazzling afternoon glare of an island. Coconut palms draw the eye upward to the complex patterns and colors at their heart. And wind-swollen sails float above the ever-changing waters under squintworthy skies.

PRESERVING THE SPIRIT OF FRAN FORD

I

was thinking about Fran Ford the other day. Possibly because I was sitting on a bench in the shade of a giant ficus tree in the middle of the Fran Ford White-Crowned Pigeon Preserve on Government Road. Possibly because I thought it was her birthday.

Fran’s been gone a couple years now, but I wondered how she would have dealt with the scene, the cognitive dissonance of the high and the low.

For those who didn’t know her, Fran Ford was a force both of and for nature. She was like the Tasmanian Devil, energy-wise, 5-foot-nothing and always in a khaki skirt and a straw boater. Usually there was a brooch involved. She had catchphrases before the term catchphrase existed. One was “Woo hoo,” said in the manner of a manic cuckoo clock whenever you knocked on her door or she knocked on yours, and “Isn’t it wonderful?” for whenever something was, well, wonderful. She and her husband, Bill, a Navy pilot, the Commander, retired here in the early ’60s and raised four kids on Washington Street. (You may know Tom, who still lives in town, or Greta, his wife, or Effie and Caitlyn, their cooleyed Conch kids.)

Retired is a euphemism. Bill managed the Turtle Kraals, when it was an actual cannery, until it shut. Then he owned the Sea Store on Greene Street. He was part of the Florida Land and Sea Trust, and weathered the flak of being an early proponent of the Old Town architectural preservation movement.

Fran, for several decades, was synonymous with the Florida Keys Audubon Society (for which I now work), but also the Key West Garden Club and, for a while, the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, and probably a bunch of other stuff I’ve forgotten about.

I’d been circling around the whole birdwatching thing for a while, interested, but not sure how to get any traction with it. I hadn’t really met Fran before, but she called the house way too early on a Saturday morning in October and yelled “Hawkwatch!” when I picked up the phone. Huh? “Hawkwatch!” she repeated, then told me where and when.

So I went to my first hawkwatch, saw my first migrating peregrine falcon, my first migrating American kestrel, my first 200bird kettle of broad-winged hawks.

I went the next year, too, where I met this Mark Whiteside guy people were always talking about. He showed up late to the hawkwatch, pushing his infant son Eric in a stroller.

My life has been a long slide into the semi-professional birdwatcher world since. Fran deserves a lot of the thanks/blame.

She was something of a magpie, always grabbing bits of information from various places and building them into something; grabbing people from disparate castes of the island and forming them into little affinity groups.

Honestly, all that boundless energy could make it hard to keep up, even if she was 40 years older than I. But that was fine – there was a whole island out there that could absorb her energy, a whole island of people whose lives were made better by that energy.

She affected so many people’s lives in so many good ways that in 2003 they named a bit of Key West after her, the aforementioned Fran Ford White-Crowned Pigeon Preserve. It is a small patch of nice habitat, and there is always something to be seen. A few minutes before I found myself sitting on the bench, I’d watched a northern mockingbird gorge herself on berries, then followed behind a pair of common ground doves as they waddled down one of the trails.

Other than the grass around the bench and kiosk, the place was looking pretty great. That was due to Eric Whiteside, the kid who’d been in the stroller at my second hawkwatch. He was home from the University of Florida because COVID had shut things down, and he spent the summer taking the preserve on as a project, clearing the trails, picking up trash, printing and organizing dozens of photos, replacing the plexiglass and restoring the signboard that had been vandalized.

How would Fran have dealt with the cognitive dissonance of all that trash in the grass? She wouldn’t have. Fran did not wallow in cognitive dissonance. She would have just grabbed a bag and picked up the trash.

Which is what I did, picking up a Taco Bell bag, a tennis ball that had lost its felt, a dozen Natural Ice tallboys, a lighter that said Bone Collector on the side, another Fireball bottle, a wrapper from a convenience store hard-boiled egg, a shirt from the Alabama High School Athletics Associations’s 2019 Cheerleading Championships, and a lot of less interesting stuff.

It took about 20 minutes to make the place look better. There’s some still trash around, but much less of it.

I describe all this not as virtue signaling, not as a sad attempt to coax praise, but as advice.

If you can find a way to pull off acting like Fran Ford for 20 minutes every once in a while, do it. You’ll be better for it. The world will be better for it.

That’s how Jim Ritterhoff, executive director of Force Blue, described the coming together of military veterans, the National Football League (NFL), coral scientists, government and corporate entities, all collaborating to benefit Florida’s coral reef.

Force Blue, which helped organize the project, retrains and redeploys former special operations veterans and military-trained combat divers to work alongside scientists and environmentalists on marine conservation missions. The veterans act as a “highly skilled workforce” to accomplish difficult and critical scientific work, in return gaining “a new mission and a sense of continued service” in fighting for the planet, Ritterhoff explained.

Last year, for Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Force Blue divers joined scientists from The Florida Aquarium (FLAQ) and the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) to plant 100 endangered staghorn corals in Biscayne Bay, off Miami.

The symbolic project celebrated the NFL’s 100th season last year.

The ocean-focused project was a first for the NFL. “NFL Green had never worked on an underwater environmental project until beginning work on coral restoration in Florida. Doing so allowed us to bring together the most diverse group of partners we’ve ever worked with,” said Susan Groh, Associate Director for NFL Green, the NFL’s environmental and sustainability wing.

The project expanded throughout the year into “100 Yards of Hope,” a multi-year coral restoration project aimed at reseeding a football field-sized area off Biscayne Bay with multiple species of endangered corals. The hope is to turn the tide for Florida’s iconic reef and to drive even more awareness about its plight.

The end zones and center of the football field-sized reef were placed in fall 2020, followed by divers planting thousands of staghorn and mountainous star corals from FLAQ, RSMAS, SECORE International and Frost Science, Debborah Luke told the Keys Weekly.

"This critically important project is helping to restore Florida's Coral Reef, the third-largest barrier reef in the world, which is in crisis," said Luke, FLAQ senior vice president of conservation.

Now, as a capstone to NFL Green Week, which precedes each year’s Super Bowl and serves as a way to galvanize community greening efforts in the host city, the team planted 150 elkhorn corals, another threatened coral species, in the field. RSMAS provided 55 of the corals in celebration of Super Bowl LV. FLAQ provided the remaining corals.

A final planting of massive brain and star corals in the spring will complete 100 Yards of Hope, the NFL’s Groh said.

“100 Yards of Hope is a symbol of what passionate, hopeful individuals can accomplish when working towards a shared vision,” said Dalton Hesley, a senior research associate at RSMAS, whose team spearheaded restoration efforts.

“What started as a celebration of the NFL’s 100th season has transformed into a fight for the future of our coral reefs.”

He added, “Coral restoration is a tremendous tool in the fight for Florida’s Coral Reef as it helps recover degraded coral populations and safeguard the ecological services they provide.”

So, what are these benefits?

Coral reefs support one out of every four marine species and act as critical nursery grounds, Groh explained. They also reduce storm and wave energy, protecting our coastlines, lives and livelihoods.

As we know well in the Florida Keys, Florida's coral reef also underpins our entire economy and way of life. Many view saving it as a way to also save ourselves and our future.

“Every year coral reefs pump $3.4 billion into the U.S. economy through jobs, tourism, seafood, even the medicines we take,” Groh said. “But coral reefs are under threat by a changing climate, pollution and warmer, more acidic oceans, and they won’t survive without significant restoration and conservation efforts.”

FLAQ’s Luke agreed, saying, "Over 90% of (the reef's) corals have died... restoration of Florida's Coral Reef is imperative if we are to continue reaping (its) benefits.”

The unexpected collaboration has also had an unforeseen, positive impact by getting an unlikely crowd involved.

Force Blue’s Ritterhoff explained that the touchdown in these efforts is using Navy SEALS and the NFL, people you don't traditionally see talking about conservation, to reach an audience who wouldn't necessarily pay attention to coral reef scientists.

“People listen because these guys are their heroes,” he told the Keys Weekly. “We have to reach beyond the choir in marine conservation. We have to get more people involved.”

Most importantly, he noted, “we don’t care if you get on board from the right side or the left side; we’re on the same boat. That’s what 100 Yards of Hope is all about. It’s about bringing together people from all walks of life, different political aisles, life experiences, and making them aware of a problem that exists. Cooperating and coming together to be a solution.

That is a symbol of hope.”

Sophomore Ericka Augst emerged as the star. She won her heats in the 50-yard butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle races. Her performance qualified her for national-level competitions in multiple categories and set the bar for future CFK swimmers with nine school records. Junior Sarah Pietraszka also qualified for nationals in the 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke events and established three school records.

Sophomores Miranda College and ikola Pavlicek, who are new to the sport, swam competitively for the first time at this meet. Pavlicek now holds three school records.

The event marked a return to the pool after many years for sophomore Janna Moran, the team’s most experienced swimmer. All CFK athletes established personal best

times, which will serve as a baseline for growth in this season and in the future.

“We’re excited to have our first competition under our belt,” said coach Lori Bosco, CFK’s aquatics director. “The students have been training hard and it showed. The experience is valuable as we all work to grow and improve our new athletic program at the college.”

Despite pandemic-related delays, CFK’s swim teams have been training in the college’s junior Olympic-size pool since mid-January.

With ample space in and out of the water for social distancing and no contact required, there is minimal risk associated with the sport.

In 2019, CFK joined the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), which is key to operating and competing in sanctioned, structured athletic events. The college is on track to join the ranks of colleges across the state and nation to compete for high-level recognitions by 2022. Eventually, the swim teams will compete in regular seasons against other Florida colleges and against colleges and universities from outside the South Florida region.

Dead whale in Everglades leads to discovery of new species

n January 2019, a 38-foot, 30-ton whale washed up on Sandy Key in the Everglades. I happened to be camping at Flamingo, by chance, and ran over to the Marina to watch the necropsy (nonhuman autopsy).

“Huh, so that’s how big a whale is,” I thought to myself, having never actually seen one in or out of the water. “That’s not as big as I thought it’d be.”

We walked around and around its body, which took up most of the boat ramp, as researchers worked to take tissue and skin samples for genetic testing.

From initial observations, several FWS scientists and Everglades park rangers told me the whale looked underweight and that there was a hard piece of plastic in its stomach, something that could have contributed to its demise.

We watched a massive flatbed truck come with a crane attached, hauling the dissected body on top of it. Covered in a tarp and with its tail sticking off the bed, the whale was driven to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. I imagined that would be quite the sight to behold driving next to it on the highways, and I was a little jealous of the people who would get to have that unique experience.

It would be buried there for a few years and then the bones exhumed and archived, we were told.

Most observers guessed it was a Bryde's (pronounced "broodus") whale, a rare species of baleen whale usually found in warm, temperate waters including the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific. Baleen whales are named after the baleen plates on the side of their mouths that act as strainers when they feed. In this famous family of cetaceans are also blue, humpback and bowhead whales.

That was two years ago. I’d forgotten about the whale, what with coronavirus and work and life going on, until a news story a few weeks ago caught my eye: “A whale died in the Everglades. Scientists now think they found a new species,” the Miami Herald headline said.

“Wait, a dead whale in the Everglades. Another one? Is that – could that be – my dead whale in the Everglades?” I wondered excitedly.

A closer inspection of the details and accompanying pictures confirmed it to be true. Just under two years from when the whale first washed up in the Everglades, NOAA scientist Patricia Rosel made the startling announcement: the Everglades whale was actually a new species.

In the journal Marine Mammal Science, Rosel outlined exactly why she and her team believed that the mammal was a “Bryde’slike whale” instead of an actual Bryde’s. The researchers had been studying the population of “Gulf of Mexico Bryde’s whales” that this individual came from for years. Reviewing records and limited genetic testing, they had a hunch it might be a new species, but needed further “genetic and morphological evidence.” They needed a body.

Enter our poor Sandy Key whale.

After the unfortunate animal was exhumed, bones now clean and ready for examination, Rosel went to Washington D.C. to look at its skull. Her instincts were confirmed: the “Bryde’s whales of the Gulf of Mexico” were actually not Bryde’s whales at all.

She named the new species a “Rice’s whale,” after biologist Dale Rice, who was the first to recognize that Bryde’s whales (now appropriately named Rice’s whales) lived in the Gulf of Mexico, NOAA announced.

In the paper, Rosel noted that Rice’s whales behave differently than their Bryde’s cousins. Firstly, their lineage is geographically confined to the Gulf of Mexico; Bryde’s are ocean-going travelers. The Gulf whales also don’t feed at the surface, instead “lunge diving” to feed on the ocean floor during the day, the paper explained.

“This type of bottom feeding is unusual” among similar whales, Rosel wrote in the paper. “Further work to identify primary prey species and foraging behaviors is needed and will be important for identifying potential threats and important habitat for these whales.”

Now that scientists have confirmed a new species, they also warn that there are only about 33 of the whales left. The population has just been identified, and, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, it is already critically endangered.

If the Society of Marine Mammalogy Committee on Taxonomy formally accepts the Rice whale as a new species, NOAA will begin the regulatory process to list it as an endangered species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Until then, it will retain its protected status under the Endangered Species Act (because it was previously listed as an endangered subspecies, the Gulf of Mexico Bryde’s whale) and under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. As one of my good friends who was with me that day said when I texted her the Herald article at 1 a.m. (sorry, Ellen!), “How amazing.

It’s very cool to be a part of history!”

A love letter to life ARTIST & POET COLLABORATE ON MIXED MEDIA TRAVEL BOOK

“I

always wish to be meeting you somewhere,” poet Greg Cantrell writes to his wife, the artist Marlene Koenig. Evidence of that wish and those meetings is found in the couple’s first collaborative book, “What Passes Between Us Over Café Tables.”

The title is a reference to a ritual the two observe to make art while traveling. “Every morning we sit in a café. We don’t speak very much at first. I write, she draws, and then we pass our work back and forth.” Sourced from their respective journals and collected over years, many countries and many more empty cups, the book pairs Koenig’s images with Cantrell’s words.

Supported in part by a grant from the Anne McKee Artist Fund, the raw material of the book was constructed using minimal tools: paper, pens and glue sticks. Koenig explains how limitation lends itself to creation, “As with any practice, it takes the choice out so that action can happen.”

The couple was strict in practice, but lenient in curation. “It’s much more about a way of life than trying to get a perfect poem or perfect image. The point is the moment, and making something poetic of it,” said Cantrell. Koenig agreed, adding, “When you make art, you hold on to that moment in a different kind of way.

It’s this ephemeral feeling of bits and pieces and how they collect into a broader picture.”

The broader picture of “What Passes Between Us Over Café Tables” is as beautiful as it is intimate. “It’s a love letter to her,” admitted Cantrell. And yet, the intention and the audience extend beyond the couple. “The tone of the book is to live well, to be good to yourself, to be good to others, to celebrate the imperfection and the fleetingness of the moment. I think of it as a love letter to life, a celebration of love, and a celebration of an affair that has taken us across many continents and into this experience.”

Said love affair began in New York City 20-some years ago in a former sweatshop turned into an artist collective. “It was the ninth of July. She came all by herself in the rain to the seventh floor of this industrial building. I opened the door and immediately knew that I was going to like this person.” One all-night, rooftop conversation and two months later, Cantrell proposed and within a year the pair were married. In lieu of traditional rings they wear matching tattoos, blue Venn circles on their forearms. “I can’t lose the tattoo,” laughed Cantrell.

In the early 2000s, the couple was priced out of their apartment in Brooklyn’s Dandy Zipper Factory, detailed in a poem by Cantrell as “emptied out and torn apart, where our together got its start.” Koenig and Cantrell made way for the end of the road and before long, called it home. “It’s the same Key West story you always hear: we spent the afternoon here, went back to New York, packed our shit and moved down,” said Koenig, laughing.

Key West gave the couple the financial freedom to travel more widely and collect the miles and moments that would become their book. The pair describes “What Passes Between Us Over Café Tables” as an experiment, to see what could happen if they allowed their work to engage with and be influenced by the other. It’s an influence Koenig felt long before the couple traded notebooks. “When I met Greg, I felt so small and insignificant as an artist. I didn’t go to art school. He showed me that there is a way to be that is completely valid and should be celebrated. He gave weight to it, where I couldn’t.

He didn’t judge me as a creative. When somebody supports you when you’re vulnerable and really sees you, it’s everything.”

It took months before Koenig was able to show Cantrell her own work, a privilege for him then and now. “It was amazing to reach that place in our relationship. To have witnessed what I first saw to what’s going on now, and everything in between, the development and the growth and the change, it’s astounding.”

Fittingly, or fatedly, on the day of our interview, the pair sit below Koenig’s latest painting, two love birds perched on a flowering pelvic bone. Koenig explains that the birds represent the nadis Ida and Pingala. “They’re two opposite energies, the right and left side, the solar and the lunar that we’re in constant effort to balance so we can move through the world in a more holistic way.”

Throughout the book are references to Talula Blue, Koenig’s nickname, born of sketches passed between the couple during the pre-Cana classes they took to appease Koenig’s Catholic mother. “I started to doodle this girl and I wrote Talula Blue and that became the daughter that never was, then it transferred into my nickname because I never felt like mine fit me.” Talula Blue has become Koenig’s creative alias and the namesake of her studio, Blue Skin. “It stuck because she always has paint all over her. Blue paint, blue sky, blue skin, Blue Skin Studio,” said Cantrell.

In kind, Koenig calls Cantrell “Knobby,” a reference to his shaved head and penchant for bumping into things with it. Cantrell asks in the pages of their book, “How many times can you hit your head before your own light comes on? I have a thousand scars on my knob, but only one or two good ideas.” His work and life suggest otherwise. Up before dawn, Cantrell watches the sunrise every day and once arrived in Lithuania with a suitcase full of journals and books, but not a single article of clothing, his priorities present in his packing.

Cantrell studied philosophy and draws inspiration from Koenig’s dedication to living fully and creating consistently. “I love her work, but what I take from her is daily practice, discipline, the totality of being someone who is a creative entity. Philosophers talk about how your life, a life, can be constructed and composed in the way a work of art is. More than any single thing she does, it’s that way of living that moves me about her. She really, authentically lives and what’s produced is reflective of that.”

Likewise, what passes between Koenig and Cantrell is made alive by them; countries, coffee, history, memory, the infinite love letter.

FDOT CANCELS UPPER KEYS PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AFTER COMMUNITY OPPOSITION

A

n elevated walkway over U.S. 1 neared construction next to Islamorada’s Founders Park. Between a village dais united in opposition to the project and public outcry, however, the $4.68 million state project to construct the Keys’ first pedestrian bridge on the Overseas Highway recently came to an abrupt end.

A Feb. 5 letter issued by the Florida Department of Transportation District 6 Secretary James Wolfe informed Mayor Buddy Pinder of the department’s decision to cancel the Founders Park pedestrian bridge. The project’s cancellation came after Pinder sent a letter on behalf of the village council on Jan. 20 urging the Florida governor to instruct FDOT to cease any further progress on the bridge. Council members and residents pointed to a 2016 FDOT feasibility study that deemed the bridge unwarranted.

Wolfe’s letter states that the bridge cancellation is “unfortunately timed” and “causing a loss of public funds.” According to state transportation officials, the department spent a total of $1,62 million on the project.

And Florida Keys Electric Cooperative spent approximately $460,000 to relocate utilities for the pedestrian bridge. According to FKEC, the work started last fall and recently was finished.

Shareholders from Ocean Reef to Marathon paid for the expense.

“As this is a local project and should not proceed without village support, we will cancel the project and return the site to its prior condition,” Wolfe wrote. “FDOT worked closely with the village of Islamorada in the development of this project during which the village consistently supported the pedestrian bridge.”

Following news of FDOT’s decision, Pinder told the Keys Weekly the bridge’s cancellation was the result of residents who emailed the governor’s office, Wolfe and FDOT Secretary Kevin Thibault as well as the village council’s unified opposition to the project. Pinder voiced his opposition to the bridge during his campaign run.

“It was awesome news,” he said.

Discussions regarding traffic safety and the idea of safe crossing of U.S. 1 occurred roughly six years ago among local mayors and officials throughout Monroe County. What started as a mobile pedestrian crosswalk for use from Key Largo to Key West evolved into a pilot program for a permanent bridge. Surveying several locations, FDOT targeted Founders Park as the spot for a permanent bridge.

Fast forward to November 2021, when five new council members took their seats following election victories. They sought information and answers to questions about the project.

meeting on Nov. 19, when he suggested a referendum to gauge community support.

Council left the meeting wanting the opportunity to review information regarding the project’s history, timetables and communications the former dais had with state transportation officials.

That led to the discovery of a 2016 feasibility study by FDOT regarding pedestrian bridges at five possible locations in the Florida Keys, from Marathon Community Park at MM 49 to Key Largo’s Rowell’s Waterfront Park. In the 120-page report, FDOT states that Founders Park was identified as the highest priority out of the five locations reviewed, based on the “highest total annual event attendance generating pedestrian traffic and lack of existing pedestrian facilities.”

But just a few paragraphs later, FDOT states that a temporary pedestrian bridge is not a cost-effective option and is not warranted based on usage at the five locations reviewed.

By August 2017, FDOT was recommending to village officials a pedestrian bridge with elevators.

Rosenthal told the Weekly that his work to halt the pedestrian bridge began two years ago, before he ever decided to run for office.

“I couldn’t get the votes I needed from the old council,” he said. “And quite frankly, that’s why I decided to run.”

As for the bridge’s cancellation, Rosenthal said he didn’t think the decision by FDOT would happen as quickly as it did.

“I guess they found out we were serious and we were going to continue on, and we got the job done,” he said.

The public voiced concerns over costs that escalated from $1.2 million during the project’s early stages to over $4 million in 2020 as the project entered the design phase last May.

There were also those in favor of the project who believed it would improve crossing for pedestrians, as well as students walking to Treasure Village Montessori. Rosenthal said he’ll work with the school to address any safety concerns.

“I told the school a year ago or more that if I was successful in doing away with the bridge, I would work just as hard for them to get something better than what they have as far as kids crossing the street,” he said. “During the campaign, a number of people suggested a signal light at the fire department. I intend to do exactly what I promised the school.”

Councilman David Webb said he’s grateful to FDOT for supporting their request.

“I know the prior council technically did everything correctly as far as public meetings, discussions and votes. One thing I thought they could have been more aggressive on was actually seeking input from the community,” he said. “I talked about this in my campaign: I feel it’s the obligation of the council to reach out to the community, and not stand on technicalities of announcing the meetings and allowing people three minutes at the microphone.”

Despite the cancellation, Wolfe’s letter states that FDOT intends to work with the village more successfully on future projects.

With the pedestrian bridge now dead, council members will focus attention on two larger infrastructure matters — which also involve FDOT — in the Fills and Snake Creek Bridge.

Locals have small-town dating challenges, but reason to hope

A

ngela is a 50-year-old divorcee in Key West who hasn’t been on a date in two years. And she’s just fine with that, thank you very much.

“I live a nice, peaceful life,” the business owner told Keys Weekly. “I’m a really good solo act. I don’t yearn for a partner.”

But it also doesn’t help that the last man she dated had more red flags than a marching band.

“The first date (in Cudjoe) was a fiasco. He got inebriated,” she recalled.

“I thought, ‘I can’t let this guy ride his motorcycle home.’ He agreed to let me drive him. But he couldn’t remember where he lived. Then he tells me he was going to walk back to Cudjoe to get his motorcycle, so I drove him back to Cudjoe. He said he didn’t have his keys, and he starts ransacking my work van.”

For another date, they agreed to meet up at her home to start the night.

When he arrived, he immediately asked if he could take a nap. “I went out, and when I came home he was still asleep. I got a text from a friend asking me to go out. I couldn’t wake him up, so I went to meet my friend.

When I came home, he was gone. That was a couple of years ago, and that was my last real date.”

Angela’s story was just one of the doozies about dating that Keys Weekly has heard in response to a post we

wrote on a community Facebook page with 24,000 members. Seeing as how Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, we had been thinking: What’s it like to be single and dating in the Keys right now? And how has the pandemic affected the single life?

We asked locals these questions in our post. About 40 commenters, most of them female, left 120 comments, and our DMs blew up, full of people who wanted to share their tales, including Angela’s. And hers was one that was tame enough to print.

Locals kept repeating two popular sayings about Keys dating. The first one? As one young Upper Keys single gentleman wrote, “In the Keys you don't lose your girl, you just lose your turn.”

In other words, it’s slim pickings out there.

“Everyone is related somehow, so better pick which family member you want lmao (I am joking but it’s kinda true),” wrote one young single female.

“A breakup in 2017 caused me to LEAVE the Keys,” said another female.

“While housing, location, and other issues affected the move, a HUGE issue was the lack of a viable dating pool.

Desirable, fit, stable, youthful men in the 55 to 65 range are pretty much non-existent in the Fla-Keys.”

Thirty-year-old Samantha Dellilo first met her fiance at Key Largo School when they were age 9. “When I go on a

jog in my neighborhood, I see three exboyfriends,” she told us on the phone, half-jokingly.

Jesse Hayes, 37, is a single Islamorada commercial fisherman. “A s****y aspect of a small town is when you have (a relationship) go sideways, you go to the Trading Post to get chocolate milk, and you have to say hi,” he said in his interview.

Speaking of going “sideways,” it appears that many Keys relationships frequently do, thanks to unstable behavior. Enter the second thing that local daters often say to each other: “You have to import the good ones.”

“The bar is so low here,” said Angela, who dated the inebriated motorcycle guy. “I know a lot of people in relationships here, and I wonder if their behavior would be acceptable on the mainland.”

“I think the Keys has a culture based on fishing and drinking and, those two things, when you put them together, the kind of people that that draws, I don’t think they are gonna be paragons of responsibility,” said fisherman Hayes, pointing out that it’s not just men who are unstable. “I don’t want to be disrespectful, but a lot of (women here) are emotionally unstable. I’m not looking down on women — that’s not where I’m going with that at all. Everyone has things to work on. But it is a sh*t show here.”

Throw in the pandemic, and you have a mess. “I spend more time with lobsters than women,” Hayes joked. “(Dating is) nonexistent. I mean, what do you do? Get on f*****g tinder, the sh*t show Olympics? And then what?

You end up having a text conversation and you never meet up? It’s an exercise in futility.”

But we heard lots of positive stories too. For example, not just one, but four different women commented to say that they met their husbands at Key Largo’s Sharkey’s Sharkbite Grill, a.k.a. “The Tank.” And Upper Keys poster Nikki Dunn Cullen met her husband at a kickball game. “My husband and I started dating thanks mostly to being on the same Founders Park kickball team the first season they held it. Our team won the championship and John won my heart!”

Dellilo’s story of meeting her fiance in elementary school would charm even the most jaded heart. When he walked into their fourth-grade classroom, “I hit my friend on the shoulder, and said, ‘Oh my god, he is a hunk.’ I was so smitten. We were friends for years. I was crazy about him, and everybody knew it,” she said.

Katie Lou Ramirez, 32, is a mother of two who met her husband, Adiel Ramirez, at her father’s workplace in the Keys. “I was single down here until I was 24,” she told us in an interview.

“I was lucky to meet my husband because he was working for my father.

He came from a good family from Mexico, and he came to the Keys not for girls but to make money for his family. He’s my soulmate. It’s crazy that it took someone coming from Mexico.”

He charmed her when he and his brother dressed as Super Mario Bros. to impress her nephew. “After my nephew’s birthday party, Adiel went to my dad and asked permission to ask me for a date. And we’ve been together ever since.”

Dawn McCurdy-Cale met her husband of 30 years at the Safari Lounge in 1987. Her advice? “Don't give up hope. And try searching for companionship before searching for romance,” she told us in a DM. We contacted Melinda Van Fleet, a success coach and a Keys Weekly columnist, for more guidance. “When looking for love, it’s important to be aware of yourself in conjunction with your expectations,” she told us. “Often,

we have things we have to work on first. And doing that work is important.”

We also asked Tavernier relationship and family counselor Diane Saleeby Gardner for her thoughts.

“Expanding and thinking outside the box can be exciting. Joining groups such as book clubs or other interest groups could bring not only different people but include common interests that bond people in deeper ways. You could also find an international group that expands your world views. There are pros and cons in dating during Covid, but it gives one the opportunity to do something different. You may end up finding the partner of your dreams.”

And we all need to remember that we are fortunate to live in paradise.

Christopher Massicotte, 45, told us, “I met my fiance in a hotel bar in Orlando, on March 6, just before lockdown. He is a flight attendant for American and was on a layover, and I was there for work. I invited him to come visit, and he never left. Nine months later, we were engaged. I proposed to him at the Dry Tortugas. But if it wasn't for Key West, we wouldn't be together. Someone asked him if I'd said, ‘I live in Columbus, Ohio,’ would he have come to visit, and he said, ‘Probably not.’” *Some names have been changed to protect identities … and give them a fighting chance at another date one day.
