CLASS OF 2023
PRINCIPAL WENDY McPHERSON
Dear Class of 2023,
Congratulations! You are about to complete a thirteen-year journey. Some of you started at Stanley Switlik, some started at Sugarloaf School, while others began at a different elementary school. Regardless of where you began your journey, I count it as an honor to be your principal and see you complete what you started.
For some of you, it has been a long and winding path. Remember your freshman year when you left for spring break and did not come back until the following school year? During your high school years, you have endured hurricanes, changes in state testing that felt like a hurricane, and recent water shortages that had nothing to do with a hurricane. As Generation Z, you are among the first to be called digital natives. You were born with cell phones in your hands. Trust me, getting them out of your hands has been a challenge.
Shortly, you will be leaving Marathon High School. Several of you are continuing your education, a few are going into the military, and others are going directly into the workforce. Wherever life takes you, remember to take your Dolphin pride with you. You will need it as you learn all about adulting.
The Cambridge Online Dictionary (2023) defines adulting as “the actions and behavior that are considered typical of adults, not children or young people.” Those of us who know the joys and pains of being a grown up welcome you to adulthood. Trust me, it has its pluses and minuses.
Just remember who your friends are and the life lessons you have learned so far. Both will help you succeed in your new “grown up” life. Congratulations and good luck in your future endeavors.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Wendelynn McPherson Principal Marathon High School
