GRINCH Gruff but lovable He or she may not take a liking to Christmas, the noises of the holiday season and all the cheer, but they do like to take part in the festivities, whether it be downing cookies and milk, snatching presents away from loved ones and messing up all the Christmas mail. While they may be mean-tempered, their heart has the ability to grow during a moment of crisis. And they have that superhuman strength to stop an entire sleigh loaded with presents from going over the cliff.

BUDDY THE ELF Pure love and innocence Our Keys version of Buddy the Elf is super friendly and slightly goofy. He or she is willing to put maple syrup on anything and defend a small friend in an epic snowball fight (or whatever the Keys equivalent of that is). MARTHA STEWART Super Decorator Okay, this isn’t really a movie character, but lord knows Martha Stewart has done enough cameos. The person nominated for this award is an overthe-top Christmas decorator — we’re talking six storage bins or more of holiday baubles, blow ups, ornaments and light shows. He or she owns Christmas plates, Christmas hand towels and would rather die than use a bed sheet as a tree skirt. Go! RUDOLF THE RED-NOSED REINDEER Party Guide If Rudolf were a person, living in the Keys, he or she would be the ultimate party guide of the holiday season. He or she has mapped out a schedule of holiday boat parades, parties with free champagne, and is the type of person who can waltz into a cookie-making party, make themselves at home and entertain the bakers. Extra points if they have solid connections with local law enforcement in case things get a little rowdy and can lead the party safely home with his or her “nose so bright.”

rom Arthur to Iota, the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season came to an end on Nov. 30 after setting a record for the most named storms in a season.

In keeping with tradition, a contingent of Key West residents gathered Nov. 30 to burn the redand-black hurricane warning flag.

Dr. Jack Norris, who has been a critical voice and caretaker amid the city’s COVID pandemic, did the honors by dousing the flag with locally made rum from Key West’s First Legal Rum Distillery.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard were present for the ceremony that took place next to the historic USCGC Ingham museum.

The lighthearted Conch Republic Navy also presided over the ritual.

A record-setting 12 named storms, including six hurricanes, made landfall in the United States, with Louisiana suffering five hits.

Despite devastation in the United States, Caribbean and Central America, the relentless storm season largely spared the Florida Keys, where Tropical Storm Eta toppled trees and billboards in the Upper Keys, but left homes and businesses intact. None of the storms prompted evacuations from the island chain.

“One reason this season was so active is La Niña, a weather pattern caused by the interaction of the ocean and atmosphere in the Pacific,” reports NPR. “Michael Mann, an atmospheric scientist at Pennsylvania State University, says another important factor — ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico — set new records this year. Mann says, ‘What we have this year is sort of a perfect storm, no pun intended, of very warm ocean waters and a La Niña pattern that reduces vertical wind shear, creating yet a more favorable environment for these storms to form.’

“Scientists say climate change is making hurricanes stronger, wetter and more damaging. A recent study published in Nature says because they are carrying more moisture, hurricanes are also keeping their strength longer after they make landfall, causing more damage from winds and flooding.”

Second, Garrett said, is the rollout of recently purchased software. In August, the Marathon Weekly reported that the Viewpoint software would cost the city $37,100 the first year, and has annual fees of $20,300.

Garrett said it would eliminate the need for a physical file folder that would move from desk to desk.

Builders and permit runners would be able to access a project virtually to see exactly where it is in the system.

Any action, or update, on the project generates an automated email for the next step.

Marathon leaders chart course for next year SARA MATTHIS

eorge Garrett and Luis Gonzalez are both familiar faces about town: Garrett as a longtime planner for City of Marathon, and Gonzalez as a businessman and two-year councilman. In 2021, though, they take on new and key leadership roles. Gonzalez is taking his first turn as mayor of Marathon and Garrett was recently promoted to city manager.

The Keys Weekly sat down with both on Dec. 1 to take a look at the city’s direction. The number one issue, they said, is improving the city’s relationship with its citizens, or customers, as Gonzalez likes to say.

“The community, or residents, are our customers. Their issues should become our problems,” Gonzalez said.

Both hope to open the doors to City Hall as soon as it’s safe to do so, as it regards the pandemic.

Garrett agreed. “Part of this is just COVID. We need to find a way to open the doors and help our residents get service.”

“I look forward to working with the rest of the council to improve Marathon,” said Gonzalez.

Here are other priorities:

TALLAHASSEE Gonzalez said Marathon has to maintain and expand its presence in Tallahassee to make sure important Keys initiatives receive funding: coronavirus recovery funds, water quality and home rule are his top three issues.

“It’s going to be another weird year because of the virus and Tallahassee essentially shut down.

That’s why it’s so important that we have George on board. He’s walked those halls and has those connections,” said Gonzalez.

Garrett said he will be cheering for the renewal of the Stewardship Act. The money was cut from the state’s budget in FY 2020-2021 due to revenue decreases projected from the pandemic. In the four years before that, the Stewardship Act brought $34.3 million to the Keys for water quality projects ranging from wastewater to canal restoration to land acquisition. Garrett said he’ll also be watching how the state reacts to the county’s efforts to fund road reconstruction associated with sea level rise. It’s possible the county would seek the state’s permission for a referendum to add a penny to the sales tax to fund the $1.8 billion project.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT Garrett said there are important changes already in the works to improve the efficiency of the building, code and permitting departments at Marathon City Hall. First, the city has hired an in-house, credentialed building inspector in Noe Martinez, who earns $205,920 a year.

INFRASTRUCTURE FEMA has paid for just about everything it will pay for, in terms of refunds for money spent to recover from Hurricane Irma. What’s left, the city will have to pay for itself.

“I’ve walked all these properties and I know what’s needed. It’s time for action,” said Gonzalez. “These are things that we move off the back burner and make a priority.” Gonzalez listed the repairs needed at Oceanfront Park, replacing road signs throughout Marathon, starting and finishing the kayak dock on Grassy Key, expanding the park office to include more room for staff and a place for camp kids to get out of the rain, and continuing improvements to The Quay property.

“We have some unfinished business to attend to, like the splash park,” Gonzalez said, referencing the site plan presented at a recent council meeting.

“The people of Marathon want this. We need to move forward.”

Garrett said this is possible to achieve in phases by moving the skate park first, and then constructing the splash pad in its place.

PERSONNEL Garrett said there are about 15 positions open with the City of Marathon, some of them left open purposely to save money (see below). While Garrett said he doesn’t think he needs to hire a deputy city manager immediately — if at all — he will be hiring a planning director to fill the role he previously held. “And we need to work on redundancy, not by hiring extra personnel but by training staff to do each other’s jobs,” he said. He also said he’s looking to hire a grants manager.

ECONOMY As of right now, the news is still good. Marathon’s ad valorem taxing value is holding and, by the end of the year, the city will have eight months of operating expenses in reserves to cope with the next disaster such as a hurricane.

GRANT WILL PAY COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN

FWC ALLOCATES MONEY FOR NEARSHORE CLEANUP

M

onroe County is putting out a $1.43 million bid for a management operation to clear nearshore debris between Marathon and Sugarloaf Key. The cleanup is funded by a state Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) grant to finish cleaning up after Hurricane Irma. The funds are designed to pay commercial fishermen for the work.

It’s similar to a program in which local dive operators were paid to pull hurricane debris out of deep water.

“This is coming out of a larger, $44 million funding pot,” said Celia Hitchens, the county’s senior administrator of marine resources.

The winning bidder will pay commercial fishermen for the work. Whether that’s by the day, or the hour, or the pound is yet to be decided. The bids will be opened in early January 2021, and it’s planned for the work to begin in February with the work complete by the end of June.

Bill Kelly, the CEO of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen’s Association, said the group will be submitting its own bid.

“We have the best ‘dump trucks’ that ever went to sea,” Kelly said, laughing, referencing the large commercial fishing boats capable of transporting debris back to land for proper disposal.

Kelly said hiring commercial fishermen is the right choice.

“Commercial fishermen are stakeholders. They know the marine environment, know the topography and the marine organisms and animals that inhabit this environment,” Kelly said. “We’ve done this kind of work previously. We’re efficient at doing it with zero injuries and zero secondary environmental damage.”

Most likely a small, shallow draft vessel and crew will pluck the debris off the shoreline and transport it to the “mother ship,” or commercial fishing boat.

Kelly is quick to dispel the notion that commercial fishermen are cleaning up after themselves, that the debris is wrecked fishing gear.

“Three years and two months after the storm, any lobster trap has disintegrated, been eaten by marine organisms. The only thing that might be left is trap rope and plastic funnels. What we’ll be picking up is anything from a freezer to a pull toy,” he said.

He said reports indicate that less than 10% of nearshore debris consists of commercial fishing gear.

It’s been a tough year for commercial fishermen.

The Keys exports about 95% of its catch to China. In February, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in Asia, the number of lobsters shipped dropped to near zero. As demand decreased, so did the price per pound. In recent years, Florida lobster exports to China have ranged from $50 million to $75 million a year.

ormer state Rep. Holly Raschein started a new job in the private sector on Dec. 1, as AshBritt Environmental named her the new director of government relations.

In her new position, Raschein will lead the top rapidresponse disaster company’s policy objectives at the local, state and federal levels. Elected to the Florida House in 2012, Raschein termed out after serving eight years representing the Keys and parts of south Miami-Dade in Tallahassee.

Raschein earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida State University, the first member of her family to go to college. She earned a master’s in public administration from Florida International University in Miami.

During her tenure in the legislature, Raschein made environmental issues a priority and championed legislation like the Florida Keys Stewardship Act to protect Florida’s ecosystem and natural resources. Among her service on several key committees, Raschein served as chair of the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriation Subcommittee and chair of the House Natural Resources and Public Lands Subcommittee.

In 2017, Raschein personally coordinated state and local emergency response, cleanup and restoration in the wake of Hurricane Irma, which made landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm.

he U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn within the National Key Deer Refuge (Burn Unit 2) on Big Pine Key on Thursday, Dec. 3 if weather conditions permit.

Prescribed burns in the Florida Keys refuges are implemented by a highly qualified and trained staff of interagency professional fire specialists. This activity creates a defensible space between refuge lands and private property to prevent or reduce the threat of wildfires.

Prescribed burns reduce excessive build-up of natural fire fuel, reducing the chance of unwanted severe wildfires.

Restoration and maintenance of the fire-dependent pine rockland habitat is essential for a healthy ecosystem. Prescribed burns are important for the continued survival of local species such as the federally endangered Key deer, the Bartram’s hairstreak butterfly and the butterfly’s host plant, pineland croton, which has evolved to be dependent upon fire. Mechanized methods have also been used to strengthen fire breaks, as well as to mimic fire and restore pineland croton habitat in areas that are too overgrown or too close to private property to safely conduct prescribed fire activities.

Community updates, up to and including when actual prescribed burn dates are proposed and when a burn actually occurs, will be announced on the Key Deer Refuge’s Facebook page and via roadside advisory signs. PANDEMIC BABIES Seems like a baby boom is going on in the Keys

D

id it or didn’t it? At the start of the pandemic back in March, there were lots of smirks and tongue-in-cheek comments about how the quarantine would produce the next baby boom in the U.S. However, think tanks said the coronavirus would produce the exact opposite — a decline in birth as families worried about the economy and struggled to homeschool the children they already had.

In the Keys, we do things a bit differently. Throw a baby rattle in Marathon and you’re going to hit a pregnant lady. Or, at least, it seems like that.

Plus, it’s too much fun to dream up names for this baby boom — “coronials” or, when they hit puberty, “quaranteens.”

It’s an odd time to be pregnant, for sure. Jeanine D’Amico said she’s gone so long without seeing people that the next time she meets them she will be a mother.

“All of the sudden I am going to be holding a baby and some of them didn't even know I was pregnant,” said D’Amico.

The Keys Weekly caught up with these five to take a picture of the burgeoning bumps and ask some questions.

MARINERS HOSPITAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT EARNS SILVER BEACON AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

T

he American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently awarded a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Mariners Hospital.

The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six healthy work environment standards. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

“Our dedicated team is always focused on patient care and safety,” said Rosie Sanchez, director of the Mariners Hospital Intensive Care Unit. “Receiving this award is an immense honor, and we are so proud of everyone who works in our intensive care unit.”

AACN President Elizabeth Bridges praised the commitment of the caregivers in the hospital’s ICU for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence.

“Creating healthy and supportive work environments empowers nurses and other team members to make their optimal contribution,” Bridges said. “Achieving this award is such an honor and brings such joy to those who have worked so hard to achieve excellence in patient care and positive patient outcomes.”

SEEKING BRIDGE TO SOME ANSWERS New council delves into FDOT’S pedestrian project JIM McCARTHY

A

newly-seated council wants information and answers to some questions over the Florida Department of Transportation’s pedestrian bridge project at Founders Park that’s currently in the final design stages.

The dais is specifically seeking costs the village could incur if the village council wanted to halt the project altogether and FDOT agreed.

Costs and information for a potential referendum are also sought by council, as well as FDOT project timetables and communications the former dais had as the project proceeded.

Councilman Henry Rosenthal raised the topic during the village council’s Nov. 19 meeting, which saw the dais, village clerk and village attorney inside the Founders Park Community Center and the public and village staff viewing online. Rosenthal suggested a referendum, stating that it would apply “much needed transparency with respect to this decision for the people of Islamorada.” In speaking to the elections office, Rosenthal said it

would cost $25,000 for a referendum where everyone can vote. It would also take three public hearings before the referendum.

“I think this type of project deserves that type of consideration that everybody should participate whether up or down,” he said. “The transparency of this project deserves that kind of a vote, and I wanted to have some direction to accomplish that.”

Estimated at $4.68 million, the pedestrian bridge project — funded entirely by the state — entered the design phase in May. Relocation of utilities in the bridge’s way commenced last month, and current project timelines show construction-related activities to install concrete piles either by year’s end or early 2021.

Councilman Mark Gregg asked what kind of financial exposure would follow if the village told FDOT to end the bridge project. Gregg said he wouldn’t be supportive of such a move if it resulted in increased taxpayer exposure. While applauding Rosenthal for the inquiry and championing the cause, Gregg said the reality is it’s an FDOT project.

“We’ve all looked at it. We all have our feelings about it. My particular feeling is I don’t want to see the bridge either,” he said. “But it’s here, it’s voted on and it’s going forward. FDOT is like a battleship when they get going. It’s hard to stop them.”

Rosenthal didn’t have an exact figure over potential cost for ending the project, but he said it would be considerable.

“There’s no question about that,” he said.

The project dates back to 2016 when talks started among Keys municipalities over a mobile pedestrian bridge for safe crossing during large events. It was later found that such a bridge wasn’t feasible. A submission of proposed locations ensued, leading

FDOT to choose Founders Park in Islamorada.

In February 2018, council approved the selection of the proposed pedestrian bridge crossing over U.S. 1 at Founders Park and maintenance responsibilities for the elevators. In December 2018, village council was unanimous in supporting a resolution for a design variation to the project in order to stamp the village seal on the bridge’s elevator towers.

Project costs then were around $2.5 million.

Costs at the outset were around $2 million. By January 2020, project costs had jumped to $4.4 million. In addition, an expected start date of November 2019 was delayed to move electric and water utilities that were in the way. While FDOT paid to move the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s 180 linear feet of water main, expenses to move Florida Keys Electric Cooperative’s overhead and underground electric utilities were paid by shareholders from Ocean Reef to Marathon.

FKEC said it was able to bring costs for overhead work, originally anticipated anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000, down to between $150,000 and $200,000.

Cost estimates for underground work haven’t changed, at $700,000 to $800,000. Work is underway to move those utilities.

“Costs kept escalating and escalating that were dumped on the village ... unanticipated costs from the move that no one talked about,” said Councilman David Webb. “We’re going to have maintenance costs that I haven’t seen. There’s going to be continuing long-term costs one way or another.”

Village Manager Maria Bassett said the village agreed to maintenance costs associated with the pedestrian bridge’s elevator. That expense is $3,500 a year.

Bassett went on to say it’s “almost financially irresponsible to consider halting the bridge project when there’s so much pressure to look at things from a financial perspective and being careful in what money’s spent on.”

“I would say you’re looking at a lot of money if you’re looking to stop it,” she said.

Village Attorney Roget Bryan said there’s a specific process for citizen-driven and council-led referendums. Bryan emphasized that part of the process is crafting language carefully to ensure the question isn’t misleading. In addition, Bryan said there are several layers to the bridge halt discussion.

“If the ultimate question is do you want this bridge or not, that’s one question. The question of can this project practically be stopped, that’s another question.

How much would it cost to stop the project?” he said.

Rosenthal said he’s had verbal and written communications with FDOT for about a year.

He said they’re anticipating the council may take a different view on the bridge.

“They do know something is in motion and I told them that a long time ago,” he said.

Former councilwoman Deb Gillis took to the podium following a lengthy discussion by the dais to tell them that many public meetings and comments were had throughout the state’s bridge project process. A couple citizen-driven referendum efforts occurred in that time, but they never received enough signatures, she said.

“It’s not my favorite project either, but it is the path that was voted on,” Gillis said. “If you bring it forward, understand that we did have public input on this. It just wasn’t a council decision.”

What adversities did you face being an immigrant in New Orleans? How much time and space do you have? The language barrier was the most challenging. Racism and ignorance was the next biggest struggle.

Kids are brutal, man. They will eat you alive coming up. Third was being poor. Not having clothes; having to dress in layers just so the funny-looking Goodwill pants would fit properly. The difficulty of having to learn the new culture and finding people who would have the patience to help you understand.

Dealing with different ethnicities was a new concept. In Cuba we didn’t have the melting pot of backgrounds; everyone was the same.

We were all under the same governmental control.

THE AMERICAN DREAM IS ALL HE EVER WANTED; MISSION

H

e was beaming, the pride contagious with every word. A Cuban immigrant whose adolescence was decided for him, Ramon Rodriguez finally feels accomplished and at peace, and before his 60th birthday. A young life littered with traumatic, but ultimately blessed, events, led to a quiet life in Cayo Hueso, which is all he ever wanted.

Rodriguez was ripped out of Cuba at age 10, then given up for adoption upon arrival in the U.S. He spoke no English and was living as a ward of the state in a New Orleans boys’ home and attending school in the city’s infamous Lower Ninth Ward until he found his way into the loving arms of his adopted family. Here is a man who knows what it is to fight for — and appreciate — every inch of success toward the basic American Dream.

What is your most endearing quality? Caring and helping people.

What is the one thing you would change about the world if you could? Racism.

As a Cuban immigrant, Ramon Rodriguez values family, education and work ethic above all else.

Do you have experience with that? Yes. I’ve seen people being discriminated against, and I have been discriminated against as an immigrant. Shockingly, I’ve been discriminated against not only by Americans, but by Cubans, too. The Americans, when they know I’m Cuban; Cubans, because I look ‘gringo.’

How have you moved beyond the racism in your life? I don’t think you really move past it. I think you keep it in the back of your mind and deal with it, but never truly move on from it. I know racism is out there, and I’ve learned to protect myself against it. Like, I know certain situations and how they will pan out, so I mentally prepare myself for how I will handle the moment(s).

In hindsight, are you glad your parents moved you to the U.S. when they did? In my particular situation, as a kid, I would say no because of being split from one of my parents. My life was in Cuba — it was all I knew. But now, as an adult, I can say it was the best decision for me and my siblings.

America has more opportunity. So I guess I would say overall, yes. It was a good decision.

Without getting overly political, what runs through your mind when you look at the political problems we have here, compared to a government like Cuba? Cuba is Communist. You do not have the freedom of speech like you have here. You cannot compare the two governments, but I truly do not believe half of the people here would survive in that system. I don’t think Americans realize how lucky they have it.

What about Key West makes you the happiest? To see people be individuals and be free to do what they want without fear of being judged. It makes me extremely happy to see that freedom.

What is the most beautiful thing in the world? A tight-knit family sticking through thick and thin. To see the love, and see them stay together, no matter what.

Speaking of people doing what they want without judgement, the holidays are here (along with the decorations). We’re just a day away from December at the time of this interview, but since you’re a Catholic, on a scale of 1 to 10 how excited are you for Christmas? 10.

Do you believe in putting up the Christmas decorations before December? No. I think every season should have its time.

Much like the seasons of life.

What would be one thing you would encourage kids to do/ learn that you believe will give them an advantage in adulthood? Besides being educated, I think kids should take initiative to learn basic household chores: Cleaning, laundry, cooking. It will never matter how much money you make; you should always know how to do something yourself. Why waste your hard-earned money paying someone else to do what you can do yourself? Same with changing your car’s oil or tires, basic construction (how to measure and cut a board), and maintain your property.

What advice would you give the older generation? Be patient with the younger generation. Encourage them. Don’t degrade them. I believe it will help keep animosity down and create a safe space for all of us to grow.

If COVID didn’t exist, what is your perfect day, start to finish? On weekdays? Waking up, for starters. Have a cup of coffee with the sunrise, go have a great productive day at work, come home and cook dinner for my wife, then relax with her after. Weekends? Sleep in a little bit, go to breakfast (preferably at Goldman’s), go for a little ride up the Keys, pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, have lunch. Then head back home for dinner and salsa dancing at El Meson de Pepe’s and then have a private night with my woman.

What would you consider your crowning achievement to date?

Definitely raising my son. Teaching him a work ethic and making sure he was educated and had every opportunity to use his gift of intel-

ligence, and making sure he had the tools he needed to succeed.

Seeing his achievements as a lawyer and the man he is as a provider, a father and a husband — he is my crowning achievement.

That was incredibly sweet and heartfelt. Do you have any specific advice you would pass along to him? Advice that, although you were giving it to your son, other people might benefit from hearing it? Treat people as you want to be treated. Look with your heart and not with your eyes. Be an asset in every way you can in this world.

What is something you dreamed of, but were told you could never do/have, then ended up achieving despite the naysayers? Buying my first house on the water. People told me I would never afford it; I would never have that kind of money. It was just outside of New Orleans, and I built it myself from the ground up.

What would you say is the key to your successes? Ignoring negativity and focusing on the positives — glass half full, not empty, perspective.

The College of the Florida Keys has extended its tuition payment deadline from Dec. 1 to Jan. 4, allowing financially stressed students to wait until after the holidays to finalize tuition payments. CONTRIBUTED

ecognizing the serious financial challenges facing many students, The College of the Florida Keys has extended its deadline for spring tuition and fees from Dec. 1 to Jan. 4.

The additional time will allow students time to formalize their academic plans by registering for spring classes without having to pay their bill until after the holidays. Applications to begin classes in the spring semester are due on Dec. 7 and classes begin Jan. 4.

In addition to the tuition deadline extension, CFK offers multiple resources and services to help students pay for school, including financial aid, interestfree payment plans, scholarships, and military and veteran assistance programs. he Key West Women and Girls Flag Football League is underway. Entering its 21st year, the league has 200 girls learning to play and enjoy a game the whole family watches on the weekend — but in a new way.

“Playing flag football, we create our own style with a completely different flavor,” said longtime coach and league organizer Diane Beruldsen. “We don’t prioritize winning, rather understanding her position on the field to make the best choices. It’s about building leaders and caring for one another. We don’t focus on the score.”

Marathon flag football league mom Allison Sayer says, “My daughter is obsessed with the game.”

On Thanksgiving weekend, Sarah Fuller made history by being the first female to play in a major conference football game for Vanderbilt University as kicker.

“It’s just so exciting,” Fuller told ESPN after the game. “The fact that I can represent the little girls out there who want to do this or thought about playing football or any sport really. And (I hope) it encourages them to be able to step out and do

something big like this.”

The Keys league has 200 players spread across 10 teams in two divisions — girls (ages 9 to 11, though they take players as young as 7) and junior (ages 12 to 15). Girls 16 and older are invited to play in the local women’s league.

It’s not too late to join, for mothers or daughters.

“We encourage moms to coach, so their daughters can see their mothers in leadership positions,” said Beruldsen.

Once-a-week practices are spread throughout the week. Pictured is a scrimmage game played over the Thanksgiving weekend. The program is free, courtesy of businesses that sponsor teams. The season culminates in mid-January with the Kelly McGillis Classic Flag Football Tournament.

BRIEFLY Free COVID-19 testing available at Founders Park COVID-19 testing by Curative is offering walk-up testing daily at Founders Parks in Islamorada through Monday, Dec. 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with more than 500 tests per day available to the public. Curative offers an oral-fluid swab testing — an alternative method to nasopharyngeal swabs in testing for COVID-19. The observed and directed self-collected oral fluid swab involves having the person cough first, which releases virus from the upper and lower respiratory tract. The virus is then caught in the saliva, the patient then swabs the inside of their cheeks and the roofs of their mouths. Once complete, the patient seals their test within a secure container and returns it to a medical professional to be administered in the lab. Results are sent to patients via SMS text or email within 24-48 hours. Testing is available by walk-up or appointment. Appointments are available at www.curative.com.

Christmas lights drive-through display runs through January Residents and passersthrough of Marathon are invited to see the holiday light display at Marathon Community Park. The

lights will stay up throughout the holiday season. Sadly, the pandemic has canceled the traditional evening with Santa, but city staff worked hard to put some extra cheer into park decorations.

Start decorating the boat for parade The Key Colony Beach Christmas Boat Parade will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13 starting at dusk.

The parade will begin on the 7th Street canal and proceed along Sadowski Causeway through the west side canals, finishing up on the 10/11th St. canal. The entire Middle Keys community is encouraged to attend while observing all social distancing practices.

Cash prizes will include $1,000 for Best Overall, sponsored by the Marathon Power Squadron; and $500 each for Best in Class (over and under 30 feet), sponsored by Realtor Karen Raspe and Berkshire Hathaway Keys Realty. Other prizes sponsored by Key Colony Beach Realty will be presented for Best Spirit and Best Theme (over and under 30 feet). Coldwell Banker Schmitt Realty is sponsoring Participation Awards for all boat captains.

I GOT TESTED Why, how and other details of a COVID-19 exam

et’s call it a growing unease.

After an outdoor Thanksgiving at my house with family and friends who haven’t been a regular part of my quarantine bubble since March, I planned to revert to working from home for a few days.

To be clear, I don’t have any symptoms. I can still taste and smell and I’m not coughing and I don’t have a fever.

But I have been affected by the reports of the new swell of coronavirus cases in Monroe County and around the nation. I haven’t felt this unsettled since the beginning of March, when Italy was getting clobbered by a new and scary disease.

So, better safe than sorry.

When the Keys Weekly published a story about the Curative test for COVID-19 last week, it was a sure sign for me to get tested. I’m a fan of the cotton swab and saliva test. I’m not a fan of the nasopharyngeal test, or “brain poke,” as some like to call it. My impulse control is low anyway, and I wasn’t sure if I would react rationally to being skewered.

After one false start — I couldn’t make an online reservation at the previously announced location on Big Pine because testing moved to Founders Park in the Upper Keys — I was all set to go.

The setup at the park is a parked sprinter van. It’s been modified with a window, a speaker and a slot. I approached the van and held my phone in the air so the invisible lab attendants could read my reservation number through the window and verified my birth date. Then a plastic kit came through a slot into my waiting hands.

Attendants instructed me to step to the back of the van and gave me spoken instructions. Take the swab out of the plastic bag, don’t let it touch anything. Cough three times to bring up any virus in the lungs. Then swish that swab all over – cheeks, between the gums, over the tongue, under the

tongue, roof of the mouth. Open the vial, put in the swab, close the vial and shake three times. Put the vial back in the bag and step to the other side of the van to SARA put the plastic bag MATTHIS through a slot.

But the whole experience had me pondering the notion of how well Americans follow directions. It goes beyond directives to wear a mask in a grocery store. For example, takers of the Curative test shouldn’t smoke, eat or drink for 20 minutes before the exam. I know this because I’m a nerd and actually watched the video that came with my reservation confirmation. The lady in the car next to me did not. She calmly sipped her coffee while waiting for her turn to be tested.

I would love to climb up on my high horse here, but I forgot to cough. The attendant had to remind me. We’re fallible, either because we’re distracted or ignorant.

Use common sense, be lucky, follow directions and trust your instincts.

3 HOLIDAY PHOTO TIPS FROM KEY WEST PHOTOGRAPHER MARK HEDDEN “The great Robert Capa once said, ‘If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.’ Of course, Capa was a famous war photographer and he was talking about fearlessly leaping into action while bullets were flying overhead, but the principle applies for holiday photos, too. Worry more about your subject (the foreground) than the background.

“On-phone camera flash: The big lie. Never use the flash on your phone – unless you’re going for that caught-onthe-ATM-security-camera look. No one and no thing looks good lit by the flash on your phone. If you need more light, drag a floor lamp closer to your subject.

Use an extension cord. Save yourself the emotional turmoil of a horrible photo.

“If you’re trying to take a holiday pet photo, you have to be quick. There are some great canine and feline models out there who understand what their job is, but they probably don’t live in your house. They’re going to knock the antlers off their head or move out of the carefully crafted lighting scenario in about two seconds. It really helps to have at least two people – one pet wrangler, and one photographer. Pro tip: If you’re trying to get a dog to look at the camera, hold a dog bone right above it. They may be in it for the snack, but there's a chance it will look like they are staring adoringly at the lens.”

2 HOLIDAY TIPS FROM MARATHON PHOTOGRAPHER BARRY GAUKEL “If you’re taking a photo of a big group of people, use the ‘four second’ rule. Explain to the group that they are going to close their eyes and on the count of three open them, and on the count of four the camera will snap. That way, everyone is photographed with their eyes open, and looking at the camera. Also, with a large group of people, it’s helpful to have a liaison — that one person who knows everyone in the group and can organize them for the camera. It’s like herding cats, sometimes.

“Posed photos are great, but I also like to take candid photos as well. The best shots are the candid ones, especially with kids and older folks who tend to force a smile that doesn’t look good. A photo of a kid with great-grandma, and they are having some type of interaction, those are priceless ones and everyone wants a copy.”

Dusk. Before it gets completely dark.

Start your adventure a little before sunset.

The sharpest images will be achieved using a tripod. If you do not want to use a tripod, try to stabilize your arm.

“Night mode is the key to great shots at night. For Android: Activate the camera. Scroll to “More” and select.

Night mode is on the menu of options. For iPhone: Tap the arrow at the middle-top of the screen after you turn on the camera. At the bottom of the screen are some options. The halfmoon is the one you want. Tap it. The word “night” will appear at the lower right side. Night mode automatically turns on when the camera detects a low-light environment. The night mode icon at the top of the display turns yellow when the feature is active. Depending on how dark the scene is, your iPhone might take a night mode photo quickly, or it might take several seconds. You can also adjust your exposure setting.

Make sure that the flash is turned OFF. You are now ready to take some pictures. It’s OK to experiment. Get close. Move back. Shoot across the highway as cars are passing by.”

ast week, 11-year-old Sofia Figueredo stood at a table in her family’s kitchen, harvesting the honey from the beehives on their Islamorada property. Her mother, Elizabeth Jolin, was by her side, ready to help.

With a hot knife, Sofia gingerly scraped honey and wax from a wooden frame taken from a hive, a procedure known as “uncapping.� The golden syrupy mixture plopped into a pan below the frame, soon to be put into an extractor to separate the honey from the wax with centrifugal force.

Elizabeth looked at their visitor with a smile, her eyes wide. “You’ve got to try this. It’s amazing,� she said, pointing at the freshly harvested honey in the pan. She licked her finger. “I swear, whenever we do this, I want to make biscuits.�

Scooping up the sticky fluid with fingers for a taste, the honey was sweet, buttery, woodsy and vanilla-y, and it was still warm from the sun.

It was so outrageously delicious, we gasped. “Isn’t it good?� Elizabeth asked rhetorically. “Look, hold this,� Sofia said, excitedly. She lifted a frame from the extractor, showing the difference in weight between a frame with honey on it and without it. “See how heavy it is?�

Yes, we do. And consider us hooked. Can we get a beehive too?

That’s how infectious Sofia’s enthusiasm for beekeeping is: It’s entirely possible that if you let her show you how to harvest honey, you’ll get bit by her bug. Or perhaps, “stung� is a better word.

In fact, Sofia is so into her hobby that it has become a modestly profitable side hustle, with money raised from her honey products going into a college fund.

About four years ago, Elizabeth was the first one in the family who became interested in getting a hive, after they visited an 80-year-old beekeeper friend in Washington, D.C.

MOLLY PRINCE Basketball Junior

What do you enjoy about basketball? I love getting to be a defensive player in the game. I’ve always been tall and great at blocking. Even when my shots weren’t the best, I could always stop the ball. That is what I enjoy most, I love getting to stop someone else’s shot. Playing basketball brings me more joy than anything else; it’s an escape that has always been there for me.

How long have you been playing basketball? I first got involved with the game when my dad began coaching the junior teams. I have been playing since I was 4 years old. Basketball has grown to be one of my favorite things to do! I look forward to continuing my basketball career far past high school and into college.

Describe one of your best moments in athletics. One of my best moments occurred last year at our first away game. The team was put in a challenging position, as the score was tied and the game was just about to end. The coach decided to play me, as we only had seven seconds left. As the buzzer beater went off we won the game at the last second. I shot my shot and won the game for our team by one point.

Coach Bernas says … “Next play.”

It basically means that if you make a mistake and mess up, you can always make it up. There will be more plays, so don’t sit on one failure.

This is a good reminder for when you get stuck in your head.

s the fall sports are officially coming to a close, the winter sports — including girls’ weightlifting, winter cheerleading, and boys’ and girls’ soccer and basketball — are kicking into full gear.

The girls’ varsity basketball team has competed in its first two games of the season. They now have a 1-1 record. On Nov. 12, the Lady Fins won their season opener (50-43).

“In both games so far we’ve stuck together as a team; the energy and team encouragement was alive, and that is what will push us to continue winning,” said player Ava Merryman.

The girls’ weightlifting team has participated in four meets so far, and districts are right around the corner.

Junior Calla Jimenez said, “My teammates and I are continuously competing against ourselves to add more weight in order to increase our rating.”

Only three girls from each weight class will be able to participate in districts. Because Marathon High School has such a big team this year, that means only a handful will advance. “The pressure is on, as we all want to remain the top of our class, but at the same time we are all proud of our teammates' accomplishments, as we all progress,” said Jimenez.

As for the girls’ varsity soccer team, its first game was on Nov. 17, a loss to Somerset Silver Palms by a score of 9-2. Team manager Yasmary Santos said the team is still upbeat about the season prospects.

“The best is yet to come,” said coach Kelly Cruz.

MHS’ girls soccer team faced Coral Shores on Dec. 2 on the home field at 4 p.m. At presstime, results were not available.

REVITALIZING THE REEF

A $5 million grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and NOAA will kickstart massive reef restoration efforts at Eastern Dry Rocks, a reef off Key West and one of seven iconic reefs located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The money, awarded to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, will allow local partners Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) to work with NOAA’s Office of Habitat Conservation and the Sanctuary to undertake unprecedented ecosystem-scale reef restoration.

“One of the most vital ecosystems in the world are coral reefs, the rainforests of the sea,” said Mote President & CEO Dr. Michael P. Crosby. “Florida’s coral reef not only provides the foundation for immense biodiversity, critical ecosystem services and Mother Nature’s shoreline protection for our communities, but also supports over 70,000 jobs in the Florida Keys.”

He added, “Unfortunately, this vital ecosystem is slipping into functional extinction before our eyes.” This is where the groundbreaking project hopes to create real change for the reef.

Restoration will occur in several stages: professional divers and community stewards will help clear nuisance species and debris to prepare and maintain the restoration site for new corals. More than 60,000 staghorn and elkhorn corals will be outplanted and the partners will monitor the success of the project and the benefits to the coastal ecosystem.

The hope is that the comprehensive project will strengthen coastal resilience, revitalize critical fish and wildlife habitat and engage the community as part of NOAA’s Mission: Iconic Reefs.

The Iconic Reefs initiative plans to restore nearly 3 million square feet (roughly 52 football fields) of the Florida Reef Tract and is one of the largest strategies ever proposed for coral restoration.

When NOAA announced its ambitious restoration plan in December 2019, proposed restoration actions

totaled almost $100 million. Sanctuary Superintendent Sarah Fangman said that at the time, no one had yet written a check but that agencies and officials were working to bring resources. With the new grant, concrete funding is in place to kickstart real work to restore the reefs.

"The iconic reefs of the Florida Keys, including Eastern Dry Rocks, are the basis for thriving ecosystems underwater and the critical tourism economy on dry land. But they remain under severe threat,” said Allison Alexander, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation vice president. “This project will transform how we address coral reef degradation and engage communities in stewarding our ocean.”

Each local partner will leverage its expertise to maximize results.

Crosby noted that Mote’s role as a core partner in Mission Iconic Reefs is to integrate the significant knowledge and expertise of innovative resilient restoration science with the important assets of its partners. CRF will provide over 35,000 corals for the effort.

“With this funding, as part of the ‘Mission: Iconic Reefs’ initiative, Coral Restoration Foundation will be able to contribute at least 15,000 staghorn and 20,000 elkhorn corals to this collaborative restoration effort at Eastern Dry Rocks off Key West,” said Jessica Levy, CRF restoration program man-

ager. “This will be our biggest restoration push in the Lower Keys, and an incredible boost to the biodiversity of the area.”

In 2019, the Foundation released a study showing that economic activity generated in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is responsible for contributing $4.4 billion and 43,000 jobs across Florida.

Coral reefs are also effective in mitigating coastal hazard risks and increasing coastal resilience. They provide substantial protection against coastal storms and storm surges by reducing wave energy by an average of 97 percent, the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation found. The structural complexity of coral reefs plays a crucial role in dissipating wave energy and protecting coastlines. With its proximity to Key West, the most populous community in Monroe County, the reef at Eastern Dry Rocks provides a natural defense from coastal storms and storm surges.

“This grant signals a turning point for reef restoration; it is a hugely significant contribution to the ‘Mission: Iconic Reefs’ effort,” said CRF CEO Scott Winters. “We see this as the beginning of an era of focused cooperation around reef restoration. And it is happening not a moment too soon.”

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Birthday reflections from an aging Boomer

I

originally wrote about many of the concepts in this column 10 years ago, on the occasion of my 49th birthday. This past Tuesday (Dec. 1) was my 59th birthday — just one more year until the Big 6-0. Just like back then, as many of us are wont to do on occasions such as this, a bit of inwardly directed thought has been taking place.

Far from mere navel-gazing, birthdays are a time for reflection on one’s place in the grand scheme of things … assuming that there is indeed a grand scheme and the universe is not just the byproduct of gazillions of hydrogen atoms colliding with each other.

As I try to figure out my place in the world, I have to wonder more about this world in which I claim a place. Far from the idyllic future we were promised as children, this brave new millennium world seems more screwed up than I could have imagined as far back as during my formative years in the 1960s and ’70s.

There have been incredible technological advances. Thanks to technology, the world is a much smaller place than it ever was. We all have the world’s greatest research library at our fingertips as the Internet is (more or less) available to everyone. At the touch of a button or touchscreen, we can read about (and actually see and hear) events and happenings from around the globe, often in real time. Information — loads of information — is ready to view, stream, or download whenever and wherever we want it. (Let’s not forget the metric crap-tons of misinformation and abject lies that emanate from questionable sources and conspiracy theorists.) And God forbid if our wireless networks go down — we are useless and adrift without our devices.

Medical and lifesaving technology has also advanced by leaps and bounds. Someday, perhaps in my lifetime, perhaps medical care will finally be available to everyone — and COVID-19 vaccines will be available very soon. Still, one has to wonder about a system where one of the most common surgical procedures is the Brazilian butt lift. Hey, it’s better to look good than to feel good, right?

Sometime during the post-World War II years, as the dawn of the Technology Age began to show glimpses of the kind of future we could achieve, people envisioned the promise of a world free from war, disease, hunger, and the myriad problems that have beset humanity since we evolved into a species that could produce beer. We’d have moon bases, space station vacations, lightning-fast transportation, trips to Mars, peace and understanding be-

tween the different peoples and nations on Earth, and flying cars. As the great Donald Fagen once wrote, “There’ll be Spandex jackets, one for everyone.”

Had we as a species kept our eye on the prize, this world would be a dramatically different place.

Somewhere along the line, however, the energy-efficient high-speed monorail to Tomorrowland ran right off

the tracks.

So, what happened? Even though we became more technologically proficient, we remained human. Imperfect.

Greedy. Hateful. Warlike defenders and consumers of territory and treasure.

Mouth-breathing Luddites who can’t accept the truth. Alleged public servants who put partisan concerns over the greater good. Wacko nutjobs who use religion and the Supreme Being to justify satanic acts of malice toward their fellow human beings. Merchants of death and destruction.

Gotta love that homo sapiens species.

And that brings me back to the aforementioned reflections upon any one person’s place in this world. What’s it all about, Alfie? What are we supposed to be doing here? Is it enough to try and make a difference locally?

Should a person even try to make a difference on a grand scale? Let's look at a few people last century who did try: John Kennedy – assassinated. Mahatma Gandhi – assassinated. Martin Luther King Jr. – assassinated. And let’s not forget what happened to that radical person 2,000 years ago who dared to suggest that we love one another as we love ourselves.

I wish I had some answers. I suppose we just keep plodding along, and try to make a difference in our respective spheres of influence. Somehow, compared to what I was promised as a child of the 1960s, it’s precious little comfort. Happy freakin’ birthday.

I’M 50. NOW WHAT? (PART 2) A few weeks ago we discussed preventive screenings that all of us should do depending on our age. This week I will narrow down to the screenings that are recommended based on male or female gender.

To review, the recommendations are from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The group is made up of 16 DR. JOHN volunteer experts in the fields of preventive WOLTZ medicine and primary care including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, … is a preventative behavioral health, obstetrics/gynecology, health physiand nursing. Most of the task force memcian with Baptist bers are practicing clinicians. They use their Health Primary Care in Marathon. own experience and receive input from topic experts and the public to come up with the recommendations.

The USPSTF’s list below is broken down by gender. It does not include pregnancy-related items; any woman planning on becoming pregnant, or already pregnant, should see her provider and discuss these additional recommendations.

Females: — Genetic breast cancer screening in those with family history of breast, ovarian, tubal or peritoneal or ancestry with BRCA 1 and 2 gene mutations.

— Offer risk-reducing medications to those at increased risk for breast cancer.

— Biennial screening mammography ages 50 to 74 (other groups recommend starting at 40).

— Cervical cancer screening every 3 years from 21-65 PAP only, starting at 30, every 5 years if HPV testing also included.

— Chlamydia and gonorrhea screening in sexually active women 24 years and younger.

— Bone density screening for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women younger than 65 if increased risk and for all women over 65 years. (Typically every 2 years.)

Males: — Abdominal aortic aneurysm screen in those who ever smoked. One-time screen between ages 65-75.

— PSA screening ages 55-65. This is a grade C recommendation, which means the USPSTF has made no recommendation for or against: “Before deciding whether to be screened, men should have an opportunity to discuss the potential benefits and harms of screening with their clinician and to incorporate their values and preferences in the decision.”

Two additional screenings recommended: — Intimate partner violence, elder abuse and abuse of vulnerable adults screening — Depression in adults Do these apply to everyone? No, many of these have an algorithm or additional factors that you and your doctor or medical provider can review and discuss to see if you should follow the recommendation.

This is not an all-inclusive list; some specialty group recommendations may be slightly different than the USPSTF. That is okay. You should discuss this with your provider and find out the best schedule for you. You may have family history or other factors that modify these recommendations. I did not include recommendations for pregnant women or for those under 18; and I feel strongly that those groups should discuss their preventive measures with their OB/GYN or pediatrician.

LOCAL CLINIC BRINGS ON MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR JIM McCARTHY

A

recent tragedy involving an Upper Keys family and ongoing pandemic stress felt by many were among the major factors for one local woman’s decision in returning to provide mental health counseling.

Pamela Molinaro knew she could counsel those during hardship, whether it be loneliness from not seeing loved ones in some time due to the coronavirus pandemic or stress juggling work and kids at home. She runs Kitchen and Bath Specialists in Islamorada on a full-time basis, but she’s now setting aside time to talk face-toface with clients needing mental health treatment at the Good Health Clinic in Tavernier.

Molinaro has spent six years as a counselor, with two years in Japan, two years working with the mentally ill at a community center in New York City and two years in the Keys. She moved to the Keys in 2018 with her husband, Joe, who grew up on the islands. Molinaro said she felt compelled to use her counseling abilities after a May 7 incident when 17-year-old Daniel Weisberger fatally stabbed his 14-year-old brother, Pascal, and critically wounded his father, Ariel Poholek.

“It hit me on so many levels,” Molinaro said. “Like anybody else who helps people, whether it be a therapist or psychologist, you want to help people and want to be there in case they’re struggling. And when they are struggling they should know everybody struggles. It doesn’t have to be alone.”

Molinaro reached out to Good Health Clinic and Kate Banick, executive director, in August to talk about potentially adding mental health counseling to the long list of services offered. Banick said the clinic has wanted counseling and mental health treatment for quite some time. It just so happened that it came down to meeting the right partner at a time when “we needed it the most.”

“For our patients here, to have it here in the clinic, it’s been a great pilot program,” Banick said.

While Molinaro provides in-person sessions at GHC, she also provides services via Zoom for people who aren’t comfortable coming into the clinic. So far, Molinaro said, no one’s turned down a visit to meet with her at the clinic.

“It goes handin-hand with anxiety and depression because there’s this isolation that comes in with that,” she said. “To actually see somebody, even though you're only seeing me from the Pamela Molinaro top of my nose to my is a mental health forehead, you’re still counselor who’s face-to-face and it’s providing appointments both helpful. It’s a good face-to-face and thing.”

Molinaro said virtual at Good Health Clinic. she’s helping some CONTRIBUTED people in their 20s and a number from their 50s to their 70s who are dealing with problems and stress. Molinaro said the pandemic is hitting everybody differently.

“I happen to think for younger generations in grade school, the ones who are learning how to read and comprehend what they read, they’re missing out academically,” she said. “I think older people who have fear of keeping themselves healthy, and now they have these unknown things that loom, I think that becomes a real concern for them. And that kind of stress doesn’t help anything.”

Molinaro said parents are not only having to deal with work, but also maintaining a household with their children now home more than ever due to the pandemic. For teachers, they’re not only teaching but also sending texts to parents whose kids haven’t shown up to class online or didn’t turn in assignments.

“It’s a whole new level of stress on them, and some have their own children to deal with,” she said.

One of the positive aspects of living in the Keys that Molinaro notes is community. Those who need help usually will receive what they need if they speak up, but Molinaro said some are afraid to do so.

“That’s what I try to be out there for … the people who are drowning,” she said.

he Monroe County School District recently reached out to Dolphin Research Center (DRC) to see if the center would like to contribute to the district's Family Academic Day program. The district is providing a "goody bag" to be distributed to students at specific schools throughout the Keys.

DRC quickly said yes to the request. An array of items including dolphin stickers, family admission passes, coasters, pens and white boards from the DRC Training Institute, note pads, and more were quickly collected.

KEYS RESIDENT RELEASES NOVEL ON CONFEDERATE TREASURY MYSTERY

A

new novel by Civil War historian and North Key Largo resident Michael Kenneth Smith is delving into the Confederacy’s hidden caches of gold entrusted to Jefferson Davis, which were lost or stolen after the Civil War. On April 2, 1865, General Robert E. Lee informed his commander in chief, Jefferson Davis, that troops in Northern Virginia could no longer protect Richmond. The president of the Confederacy, being advised to evacuate the capital, fled to Danville, Virginia.

After Lee’s surrender on April 9, Davis continued into the South where he was eventually captured by Union troops.

For 155 years, tensions between the former Confederate and Yankee states have persisted. And so has the legend of the Confederate treasury — hidden caches of gold entrusted to Davis that were lost or stolen after the Civil War. Smith creates a richly layered story surrounding this fabled treasure in his latest novel, “In The Shadow of Gold: A Tale of the Confederate Treasure.”

Meet Yancey Arvindale. Pressured into serving with the Confederate Navy by his domineering father, the seasickprone young man is relieved to be reassigned to the Danville Railroad supply train at the dawn of April 1865.

His duties include loading and guarding heavy boxes, some of which are marked Richmond Bank of the South.

With a bit of snooping, he learns the contents: “hard assets” being delivered to Jefferson Davis for safekeeping. Digging further by sneaking through loose floorboards, Yancey discovers more boxes filled with gold coins. When the reality of Confederate defeat hits, he starts to ponder: If the Confederacy no longer exists, whom does the Confederate treasury belong to?

After a lifetime of being discounted and bullied by his older brothers and father, Yancey seizes the opportunity to do something to prove his value as a man — and secure his future independence. At each stop along the train’s route, he slips out and buries a box of gold. When Yancey is caught in the

40 ‘COLD-STUNNED’ TURTLES WARMING UP AT TURTLE HOSPITAL F

orty critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles arrived in the subtropical Florida Keys on Nov. 28 to warm up and receive treatment after suffering “cold stunning” in the waters off Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Found stranded on beaches as a result of the condition, the juvenile turtles were rescued and subsequently flown from New England to Florida Keys Marathon Airport.

“Hundreds of turtles are washing up on the beach,” said Turtle Hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach. “More than the capacity that the aquariums up there can take care of, so they are being flown to the Turtle Hospital to warm up and have care for these critical animals.”

The effort to fly the turtles to the Keys was made possible by a group of private pilots, dubbed “Turtles Fly Too,” who donated their aircraft, fuel and time. The reptiles were transported in sturdy, towel-lined banana boxes.

“Cold stunning” is a hypothermic reaction that occurs when sea turtles are exposed to

cold water for a prolonged time, said Zirkelbach, adding that it typically causes them to stop eating and swimming.

Zirkelbach said the most critically ill turtles will need additional testing to discover whether they have pneumonia, infections or other ailments. Treatment will be determined accordingly, as will the length of the rehabilitation. “They could be at the Turtle Hospital anywhere from 30 days to a year’s time, depending on their condition when they arrived here,” she said. “Once we warm them up, they’re going to go to another part of Florida to be returned to the ocean and that’s our goal with these 40 turtles. We’re hoping, flippers crossed, that they all go back to sea,” she said.

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the most endangered of turtle species, Zirkelbach said.

Approximately two dozen other “coldstunned” turtles flown from New England over the weekend are to be rehabilitated at marine centers throughout Florida.
