s is customary, Monroe County Health Administrator Bob Eadie updated the county commission on Nov. 17 regarding COVID-19 in the Keys.

“Our positivity rate is below 10, but higher than we would like it to be,” Eadie said. The number refers to the percentage of residents seeking coronavirus tests who are COVID-19 positive. Eadie said the number has been as high as 15% in the past, and as low as 8%.

While the Keys are seeing a surge in cases, it is not as steep as in other parts of Florida. Eadie also noted that residents admitted to local hospitals are being discharged at about the same rate.

“Why Monroe County seems to be so different than other areas of Florida, well, I just don’t know,” Eadie said.

Monroe County had an average of 14 new coronavirus cases per day in late October, and an average of 32 new cases a day in early November. Key West is leading the county in new coronavirus cases.

The conversation then moved on to the two leading vaccination options. Moderna’s vaccine is said to be more than 94% effective, while Pfizer’s vaccine is estimated to be more than 90% effective. Both are awaiting emergency-use authorization this month from the Food and Drug Administration.

Monroe County Mayor Michelle Coldiron asked about the county’s ability to provide the ultra-cold storage necessary for the Pfizer vaccine.

“As of right now, it looks like that vaccine will be sent to large Florida hospitals with the supercold freezers.

The vaccines will go to first responders, hospital workers and nursing homes. It won’t be until late spring when the vaccines will be widely available to the general public.”

Whatever happens, Eadie said, the health department is ready. “If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s we know how to stick needles in people.”

On a positive note, Eadie told the commission that there seems to be little transmission from student to student at Monroe County public schools. As of Nov. 17, there are 42 students, four teachers and seven staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19. Key West High School has the most cases at 10, followed

by Coral Shores High School at six and Marathon Middle High School with four.

“Students are not giving it to other students. It seems like they are contracting it from their parents or siblings,” Eadie said.

As part of the COVID-19 discussion, Monroe County agreed to open outdoor public facilities such as parks to organized adult groups so long as they sign waivers.

Use of indoor facilities will continue to be limited.

County learns how it might finance $1.8 billion in sea level rise costs

O

n Nov. 17, the Monroe County Commission took a very hard look at its finances. The timing coincides with the revelation of the $1.8 billion price tag to address the Keys’ sea level rise anticipated in 25 years — the year 2045.

Yes, billion with a “b.” That’s the amount officials forecast it will cost to raise roads and move utilities (and finance the financing) to protect neighborhoods that are vulnerable should there be a 1-foot rise in sea level.

The commission heard a number of reports outlining the county’s financial options: a public bond, sales tax increases, homeowner assessments and grants and loans that could be available. The comprehensive approach came a day ahead of a special meeting to figure out which roads should be prioritized for reconstruction.

Sergio Masvidal of PFM Consulting told the commissioners it was unlikely that any one of the options would provide the financial resiliency the county needs to cope with sea level rise expenses. Rather, he said, a varied approach would be necessary, something his firm calls a Green Bond Toolbox.

• Public bonds. Municipal bonds are essentially loans taken out by states, cities or counties to finance capital projects such as road elevations. Monroe County doesn’t have a bond credit rating because it hasn’t taken any types of these loans. According to PFM, a financial consultant for the county, Monroe County could qualify for a favorable AA rating.

“That’s an extremely strong rating,” said PFM’s Sergio Masvidal. “Technically, the county has a bonding capacity of $400 million.”

An ad-valorem bond issued on the worth of Keys real estate ($28 billion), assessed at one mill over 30 years with an interest rate of 5% would require an annual debt service payment of about

$647,000 in order to raise $10 million.

Homeowners with a house valued at just under $400,000 would pay an extra $10 per year. If the county wanted $100 million, that same homeowner would pay about $100 per year. Of course, either $10 million or $100 million is way off the mark of the needed $1.8 billion to raise the roads but, Masvidal said, it helped to illustrate the number crunching.

• Sales tax. In Monroe County, elected officials could go two ways by implementing a sales tax — add an extra penny, or extend the existing infrastructure tax beyond its sunset in 2023 and continue to collect money that would be used to elevate roads.

Masvidal told the commission that in Miami, officials found an “elegant” way to raise the funds by extending an existing sales tax to fund the Miami Forever Program — $300 million to address sea level rise and $100 million in housing and economic development.

Or, the county could choose to add an additional penny to local sales tax, raising it from 7.5 cents to 8.5 cents.

Both of these options would require legislative approval from Tallahassee before they could then be presented to voters in a referendum.

County Administrator Roman Gastesi warned it’s not guaranteed state officials would agree to it.

“It’s a big lift,” Gastesi said.

• Grants and loans. Masvidal also presented some funding options including the federal government’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act designed to provide low interest rates and flexible repayment terms. That loan covers up to 49% of eligible projection costs. He also mentioned New Orleans’ strategy: accept federal funds and then set up a local revolving loan program where homeowners could apply and repay for improvements needed to address water inundation.

• Assessments. Much like the county’s approach to sewering the Keys, the Keys would be divided into districts with homeowners in each neighborhood paying an assessment.

(In Marathon, for example, homeowners paid a $5,000 assessment to connect to the municipal wastewater system. That could be paid upfront, or in annual installments on the tax bill with interest tacked on.)

In fact, there are two pilot projects Monroe County is moving forward with that would use the assessment model (see sidebar).

“Looking at our fundraising ability as opposed to the anticipated expenditure for seal level rise … well, the figures don’t match very well,” said Commissioner David Rice. “Our target is currently $1.8 billion. What we’re talking about here would depend on a significant amount of ‘OPM’ — Other People’s Money.” **** There were some bright spots amid all these data points, delivered

by Hank Fishkind, also of PFM Consulting, who looked at the county’s overall financial picture amid the coronavirusinduced recession.

One, Monroe County’s recovery and projected recovery is outperforming other tourist destinations including Orlando, Florida (Disney World) and Anaheim, California (Disneyland). Two, the pandemic revealed how much of the sales tax is paid for by tourists, and it’s much higher than anticipated.

“We’ve always guessed that visitors pay 50 to 55% of our infrastructure tax.

In recent years, we’ve increased that to about 60%,” said Gastesi.

In fact, Fishkind said it’s more like 67%. The numbers were derived from the drop in sales tax and gas tax during May when the Keys were closed to visitors.

RAISING THE ROAD County moves ahead with $15M pilot project for Sands and Twin Lakes neighborhoods

The Sands neighborhood on Big Pine Keys has been identified as a good spot for a pilot project to elevate roads that frequently flood. The estimated $8 million cost would be split among about 200 homeowners in the neighborhood who would pay a special assessment if the county continues to move forward.

wo pilot programs will address coastal flooding and sea level rise in the Key Largo Twin Lakes subdivision and the Big Pine Key Sands subdivision.

On Nov. 18, the Monroe County Commission told staff to begin preparing the groundwork for an extra “assessment” for homeowners in those neighborhoods.

The county hired Government Services Group (GSG) Inc. to calculate a rough estimate for flood mitigation, road elevation and utility adjustment costs: a $7.4 million cost shared among the owners of about 100 homes in the Key Largo neighborhood and $8 million for the 200 homes on Big Pine Key. That could mean up to $5,000 per year, for 30 years, in the Upper Keys neighborhood or up to $2,600 in the Lower Keys neighborhood under the same terms. The assessments could fall as low as $1,200 or $700 a year, respectively, if the county is able to find funds to offset 75% of the total costs.

The assessment method for funding is similar to how the county raised funds to sewer the Keys and how it has handled canal restoration projects. In canal restoration, for example, only homeowners owning property on a particular canal would

share the cost of its cleanup and maintenance by agreeing to pay a special fee.

For the report, the assessments were based on the number of homes in the area, rather than the homes’ value. Vacant lots or undevelopable lots were not included, nor financing costs.

Could all the Keys be assessed?

Coming on the heels of how to finance sea level rise costs for the entire county, estimated at $1.8 billion, the conversation branched out to cover whether or not the entire county can be assessed to cover the cost of protecting the Keys.

Camille Pawlik, the senior advisor for GSG Inc., told the commission that blurring the line between property taxes and special assessments can end up in the courtroom. Property taxes can be levied to finance only general government expenses.

Special assessments, however, must have a connection between the homes assessed and the special benefit of the assessment; in this case, the main factor would be elevating the road.

“You can’t make everyone pay if they are not receiving a benefit from the project. In this case, the benefit would be access to your home,” she said.

County Administrator Roman Gastesi said assessing the entire county would be an overreach. “If we did a countywide assessment, say $50 a month, the neighborhood of Venetian Shores would not benefit because they already have an elevation of 5 feet.”

Pilot projects move forward The best way to collect an assessment and collect funding for the project is by adding it to a homeowners’ tax bill. The commission gave staff the direction to start the process on the two pilot projects so that if and when it is complete, the fund collection could begin late next year.

“We are making moves to preserve our options,” said Commissioner David Rice, “some of which we may not implement.

The cost for the pilot projects could be lower if we get some other money, but sea level rise isn’t paying a bit of attention to where that money comes from.”

County Attorney Bob Shillinger told the council, “Today is the day we need to start, but it’s not the point of no return.”

n Nov. 18, Mayor Pro Tem Michelle Coldiron became the Monroe County mayor and Commissioner David Rice was elected to serve as mayor pro tem. It is Coldiron’s first turn in the center of the dais and she welcomed newcomers Mike Forster and Eddie Martinez.

“Being a public servant is a thankless job,” she told them.

“Today you get sworn in, tomorrow you get sworn at,” she said, laughing.

Forster replaces retiring Commissioner Sylvia Murphy in District 5, and Martinez won his seat from former Mayor Heather Carruthers by a narrow margin in District 3. Forster named David Ritz to the planning board and Martinez named George Neugent to the planning board.

At Carruthers’ last meeting, staff played a montage of photos of Carruthers’ service to Monroe County, including an appearance in Washington, D.C. to testify before Congress. Carruthers thanked County Attorney Bob Shillinger and County Administrator Roman Gastesi for their service.

“Roman, your optimism has brought this county through so many challenges,” Carruthers said. She also thanked her aide, Carol Schreck, for her support.

“The easiest way to be successful is to surround yourself with people who are as smart, or smarter, and work as hard or harder, than you do,” Carruthers said. She told the assembly that she isn’t sure what’s next, but has received a solid message with mementos inscribed with a message: “Stop me before I volunteer again.”

In other news, Norma Kula, the county’s director of libraries, announced her retirement after serving the county for 36 years.

Kimberly Matthews will now be the senior director of strategic planning as well as assume a leadership role as director of libraries.

At the meeting, Coldiron made a brief announcement that County Commissioner Craig Cates and his wife, Cheryl, have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

Commissioners expressed support and hopes for their speedy recovery. Cates was recently elected to the District 1 seat, having assumed the same role in 2019, midway through Dan Kolhage’s term. Kolhage stepped down due to health reasons.

ive new Islamorada decision makers will be sworn in during the first meeting of village council following the November general election.

Set for Thursday, Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m., the virtual meeting will start with the swearing-in of Pete Bacheler, Mark Gregg, Joseph “Buddy” Pinder, Henry Rosenthal and David Webb by Judge Sharon Hamilton.

The new dais follows the departures of Jim Mooney and Mike Forster, who won elections for state representative and county commission respectively; Deb Gillis, who termed out; and Chris Sante, who decided he wouldn’t run again after filling the term of former councilwoman Cheryl Meads.

Bacheler, Gregg, Pinder and Webb won their elections. Rosenthal was declared winner of his race after former Vice Mayor Ken Davis’ passing in early September. Gregg is the only incoming member with council experience, having served on the dais from 2000 to 2004.

Immediately following the swearing-in ceremony, council will vote to elect a mayor and vice mayor to serve for the first year of their two-year terms in office.

While the position is ceremonial, the mayor runs and maintains order during council meetings, signs documents for the village and represents Islamorada at local, state and other meetings and functions.

Once seated, the council will call upon former councilman Forster to unveil the plaque created for the dedication of the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) at Fire Station 20 to Davis. He passed away from heart failure and a massive stroke on Sept. 12. A longtime resident of the Keys, Davis, 64, served in the U.S. Coast Guard before spending 22 years in the DEA. He retired in 2008, having served as the agent-incharge of the Florida Keys DEA the last four years.

Upon his departure from the DEA, Davis was deployed as a civilian with the U.S. Army to Iraq where

Wanting to serve the public again, Davis campaigned as the Republican candidate for Monroe County sheriff in 2008. While Davis lost to Democrat Bob Peryman in the election, his desire to serve his local community didn’t go away. On Jan. 24, 2018, Davis filed to run for Islamorada Village Council. He won the November 2018 general election against Eric Carlson for seat 4.

The plaque will be placed in the room where first responders, and all those who enter to perform their critical roles during emergencies, will see the dedication and remember Davis’ impact on the community.

Following the dedication plaque presentation, departing village council members Forster, Gillis, Mooney and Sante will be acknowledged for their service to the community.

BRIEFLY Spike in vehicle burglaries reported The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has seen a spike in the number of burglaries — particularly vehicle burglaries in the Upper Keys — in the last two weeks.

Detectives are following up with several leads and the sheriff’s office hopes to make arrests in the cases, but in the interim, residents are asked to be vigilant and aware and secure their vehicle and property.

These are typically crimes of opportunity as thieves target easy prey — unlocked vehicles and homes.

While many of the incidents are occurring in Key Largo and Islamorada, one large theft of more than $6,000 in fishing gear from a downstairs storage area was reported on Duck Key on Nov. 16.

Sheriff’s office clears roads post-Eta The Monroe County Sheriff's Office took to the streets during Tropical Storm Eta Nov. 8 and 9, keeping the roads clear for emergency responders and motorists.

Most of the fallen trees and other Eta-related issues occurred in the Upper Keys, but the sheriff’s office was ready.

“I’m proud my team saw a problem and jumped on it — clearing the streets in the hardest hit areas of the Upper Keys after Eta passed over Monroe County,” said Ramsay. “It’s vital residents have the ability to check on their property and emergency responders can safely traverse the roads.

While using chainsaws to clear fallen brush may not be our primary mission here at the sheriff’s office, I’m happy to report my staff saw a problem and addressed it immediately without waiting for someone else to step in.”

County hosts viewing of ‘tiny home’ in Key Largo The public is welcome to view Monroe County’s first model codecompliant tiny home at one of three planned open houses. The house is located at 41 Judy Place, Key Largo.

The house will be open from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, Saturday, Dec. 5. and Saturday, Dec. 12.

At the open house, COVID-19 safety measures will be in place for visitors.

Visitors will be required to wear facial

coverings, socially distance from others, and only one family group will be allowed in the house at a time. There is limited parking in the neighborhood.

The Key Largo tiny home is one in a pilot project the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved in December 2018. The commissioners wanted to be creative in finding products that are wind- and flood-resistant for homeowners to consider as replacements after a disaster or losing their home. The Cornerstone Tiny Homes prototype is a hurricane-rated structure that could be used as an alternative replacement for a mobile home after a disaster.

The model home has one bedroom and one bathroom with a porch, a little less than 400 square feet, and starts at $85,000 (for the home, without the land). More information on Cornerstone Tiny Homes can be found at www.cornerstonetinyhomes.com.

Key Largo Bridge Run introduces a new challenge The 2020 First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run introduces the 2020 First State Bank Bridge the Gap Virtual Challenge.

Due to the circumstances this year, the Key Largo Bridge Run Half Marathon & 4-Mile Run/Walk was not able to take place. In its place is the 2020 First State Bank Bridge the Gap Virtual Challenge.

The virtual challenge will only have one requirement: to cross over a bridge within your route. You can run, walk, bike or skate and go as far as you like. The best part about it is you can do it anywhere.

“Our goal is to keep people motivated and healthy as they look forward to coming back to Key Largo in 2021,” says race director Henry Menendez. “I will actually be able to participate this year virtually with all my fellow runners and walkers.”

All registrants will receive a shirt and finishers medal upon completion of their challenge. In addition, all proceeds will go to the Key Largo Rotary Club. The Key Largo Rotary Club is a nonprofit organization that uses its efforts to help the local community.

A

phone and internet service outage on the morning of Nov. 12 left the majority of the island chain without any communication. The internet and cellphone blackout, which left many in the Keys wondering what happened to their signal and phones, occurred after a clam-style garbage truck yanked down lines while pulling out from a driveway on Plantation Key in Islamorada just before 8 a.m.

Corey Bryan of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said the truck was leaving the driveway to pull onto U.S. 1 when it hit the lines near the Sands of the Keys, MM 86.4, bayside.

John Ribble, who works at Sands of the Keys, said he was told excess wire that was coiled up blew down just enough from Tropical Storm Eta’s winds that the truck unknowingly pulled it down.

Utility crews from AT&T and Comcast were on the scene throughout the morning as they moved the downed wires from U.S. 1 and restored them to bring service back to everyone from Islamorada south to Key West. Some 10 trucks were on the scene as traffic slowly moved past the scene.

Key West went straight to voicemail, while grocery store’s credit card machines were down with the internet out. Internet and phone service began to return to customers from Islamorada south to Key West around noon. In all, the work to restore phone and internet service took around four hours.

No injuries were reported.

How could this happen?

How did this happen, some residents wanted to know. Even after a hurricane, many users still have cellphone coverage because of the towers.

“Well, that’s not exactly true,” said Dwane Webster of BroadWave, an internet solution provider that operates locally. “If you remember, we did lose cell service after Hurricane Irma. It took a while to restore.”

Webster said it helps to picture the Keys as a giant extension cord running off South Florida. All the cell towers are connected by a fiber-optic cable. The area where the rupture happened, Webster said, is particularly vulnerable.

“From what I understand, AT&T’s cable runs mostly underground in the Florida Keys. Comcast’s runs mostly above ground,” he said, adding that is usually why it takes Comcast longer to come back online.

onroe County was able to use a new preliminary damage inspection software application following Tropical Storm Eta in the Key Largo area. The preliminary damage assessment process is performed

by Monroe County inspectors, who inspect structures and estimate damage following a natural disaster.

The county then reports the inspection results to the state, which coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the amount of damage and unmet needs of individuals, businesses, the public sector and the community as a whole. This is vital information for the federal government to determine how much funding will follow to an area to assist a community and residents.

In the past, Monroe County had conducted these inspections using a time-consuming manual process and paper submittals. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, the county implemented an automated inspection process, in which inspectors record their results through their cell phones with pre-loaded maps and outlines of existing structures within each neighborhood. Pictures are then uploaded to ensure adequate records are kept. The county tested the system a few months ago using the phone’s airplane mode to mimic loss of signal while in the field, which would then allow the first level of inspection after a storm to be uploaded in hours rather than over days.

With Tropical Storm Eta, the process worked in a real situation.

Inspectors were ready to do inspections countywide; however, after learning the significant impacts from Eta were in the Upper Keys, the county focused on MM 98 north.

With the new application, the county was able to review 7,666 homes in

“This new tool improves accuracy and, more importantly, it streamlines the amount of time it takes for these inspections to be recorded and reported to the state and federal governments,” said Christine Hurley, Monroe County assistant administrator.

In addition to the preliminary damage assessments, Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi also spent Monday morning in the Twin Lakes and Stillwright Point areas of Key Largo assessing issues with the Tiger Dam system in place in those areas.

ranches and stand pieces making up a 10-year-old, 40-foot Christmas tree were unloaded from a moving truck in front of the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center in Key Largo on Nov. 18. Volunteers from the Key Largo community started in on the work around 9 a.m. as they unloaded the truck, fluffed the branches and installed the stand. The work lasted throughout the afternoon as the tree took shape. An official tree lighting will be streamed on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. via the Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation’s Facebook page to keep crowds from gathering due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. ‘LIKE HEAVEN’ Parade celebrates World War II veteran’s 98th birthday

erhaps you have seen a drive-by birthday party in your neighborhood during this pandemic era of the Keys: a line of cars with hand-painted signs and cheering passengers sticking out from the windows, all “socially distant” from the guest of honor, who is usually in front of their home.

But the drive-by on Saturday, Nov. 14, on Canal Street in Key Largo had some unexpected elements: fire trucks with lights ablaze, an antique military Jeep with a gun on top, a crowd of Monroe County fire and sheriff personnel, decorated veterans, and the Monroe County State Attorney, to boot.

The guest of honor? World War II veteran Charlie LaViolette, who was turning 98 that day.

Wearing face masks, the drive-by participants got out of their vehicles and gathered a safe distance behind

Charlie on his lawn, while children blew bubbles and clusters of foil balloons and streamers danced in the breeze.

The crowd yelled, “Happy birthday, Charlie!” in unison.

His wife, Charelene, leaned over and asked him how he felt. “Like I’m in heaven,” he whispered.

Charlie had been quarantined inside his home since February.

“His health is pretty good,” Charelene said. “There are days when he’s not doing so good. But most of the time, he’s ok. He’s a great guy. He still has a sense of humor. He tells jokes and sings songs. He can’t remember all the words. He’ll start a song, and he can’t figure out the rest of it. He was singing to one of the nurses the other day.”

But a few days before his birthday, Charelene was worried about her husband.

“I was baking banana nut bread and sat next to him. He was crying. I saw the tears, and I said, ‘What’s the matter?’ ‘All I got is memories now,’ he said,” she recalled sadly. “I had just never seen him cry before. That’s why I was upset about it.”

Charelene reached out to her friend Carol Smith to brainstorm about how to cheer up Charlie for his birthday, discussing how she had seen drive-by parties. Smith had the idea to call the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211 for help.

Marine combat veteran and VFW volunteer Jason Kendall took Smith’s call, and he jumped into action without hesitation.

“A lot of the vets in the area are chipping in to try to make his 98th birthday special, to remember the sacrifice our greatest generation did for all of us,” Kendall said about planning the tribute for Charlie.

“Our numbers of World War II vets are depleting. Not that many out there. … I remember as a kid we had World War II vets all over the place.”

With some phone calls, Kendall pulled in the volunteers of the Upper Keys VFW, Upper Keys VFW Auxiliary, and the American Legion Post 333 Key Largo, as well as Monroe County State Attorney Dennis Ward, to organize assorted special vehicles, decorations, a gift, and Monroe County fire and sheriff personnel to pay tribute to Charlie. The event was no longer just a drive-by birthday party.

Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient John Donnelly overheard Smith’s call to Kendall, and the duo immediately paid a visit to Charlie’s home. “He’s a brother and veteran, and that’s the way we roll,” Donnelly said. “We stand for each other, not just in battle. We help each other acclimate when we come home. Within 20 minutes (after Smith’s phone call), we were over there.”

On that Saturday just before noon, the drive-by participants gathered at the Upper Keys VFW to stage the event before driving over

to Charlie’s home. They took photos and discussed paying tribute to Charlie, knowing this birthday party was a historic event.

Joe Mastrangelo, Navy SEAL and owner of the Veteran Sailing nonprofit, said, “Freedom is one generation from being lost.

(Charlie) served in the generation that preserved it. We’d be speaking German without it.”

Kenny Edge, an Army veteran, had just seen an announcement about the drive-by on Facebook, then drove over to the VFW minutes later to participate. “I heard about this man. What an honor to be a part of this.”

Charelene said that Charlie, his father, and his four brothers were all in service at the same time, a similar story as the Niland family’s, who helped inspire the “Saving Private Ryan” film.

“Charlie was in the Naval Air Force. He was an electrician,” she said, explaining that his favorite duty was that of manning the machine gun at the back of a dive bomber aircraft. “Whenever they asked for volunteers to dive bomb, he always volunteered. He loved to dive bomb. He wants to do it again.” In the end, he achieved the rank of first-class electrician’s mate.

Maybe his own personal parade wasn’t quite the same as dive bombing, but Charlie certainly looked like he was having a great time as he gazed around in wonder at the children scampering around and the fire personnel gathering in formation behind him. Charelene said that as she was taking him in his wheelchair downstairs to the front lawn, he kept asking, “What’s going on?”

While the revelers slowly made their way back to their vehicles, Charelene looked at all the balloons and banners decorating their yard and smiled, saying that Charlie was very happy. She looked almost in shock. “I never expected all this.”

“This is our mission,” said Marketa Kendall of the VFW Auxiliary.

“This is what we do.”

New York angler wins Cheeca backcountry tournament Jim Bokor Jr., of Williamsville, New York, captured grand champion honors at the eighth annual Cheeca Lodge All-American Backcountry tournament that ended Nov. 14.

Guided by Islamorada’s Captain Richard Black, Bokor released one permit and six bonefish on bait; seven

tarpon, nine snook and four redfish on artificial; and one snook and six redfish on fly. He caught and released the tournament’s only permit just 15 minutes before lines out on the last day of fishing.

Bokor earned bonus points for catching all five species and released a total of 21 fish on artificial, garnering both the grand champion and artificial division champion titles.

The Grand Champion Team award went to U.S. Marine Corps veterans Sgt. Hector Aleman and Col. Pablo Atzola of Miami. The duo released 20 snook, five redfish and three tarpon.

New York City resident John Kukral released 26 fish on fly to earn that division’s champion trophy. He fished with Captain Luis Cortez.

The 17-angler field’s gamefish totals over two days included 109 snook, 63 redfish, 50 tarpon, 10 bonefish and one permit for an impressive total of 232 releases, according to tournament organizers.

Proceeds benefit the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.

Gold Cup series culminates with ‘Presidential’ sailfish tournament The third leg of the three-event Florida Keys Gold Cup Championship Series, the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament, is scheduled Friday through Sunday, Jan. 22-24, in Islamorada.

Kickoff for “The Presidential” is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at Cheeca Lodge, MM 82 oceanside, and includes a welcome cocktail party, angler registration, rules meeting and dinner.

Saturday and Sunday, anglers can test their light-tackle skills with 20-pound or less line to wrestle the high-flying sailfish, known for characteristic acrobatics and tail-walking the waves. Only circle hooks can be used.

Fishing is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday evening, trophies are to be awarded to the tournament’s top anglers including grand champion, second- and third-place angler, top lady angler and junior champion angler.

An overall Gold Cup series champion also is to be crowned after the series’ final leg, which follows the Islamorada Sailfish and Islamorada Fishing Club Sailfish tournaments.

Entry fee is $675 for the first angler per boat. Additional anglers’ entry fee is $600, up to four per boat, until Jan. 10, 2021. After Jan. 10, the entry fee for the first angler increases to $775 and each additional angler is $700.

If his health checks out with doctors next month, it soon could be a reality for the young boy who was diagnosed in July with a rare syndrome linked to COVID-19.

Leah Wampler didn’t know if she’d ever be able to bring her son home. She sat in the hospital and waited for updates from a team of doctors at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami.

Before Zane was admitted, no symptoms of COVID-19 were apparent. Three tests performed came back negative. It wasn’t until a 105-degree fever that Leah knew something was seriously wrong.

A positive antibodies test, however, led doctors to the belief that Zane had multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C. While some eventually improve with medial care, others get worse — as was the case for Zane. With dips in his condition, from swelling to rash, came improvements, to the point of his release from the hospital on Aug. 4.

Zane’s parents say his health is improving with his organs shrinking and returning to normal. Doctors continue to closely monitor an enlarged left lung artery and a heart murmur he developed through the illness, however.

While health specialists aren’t confident in sending him back to school just yet, they believe Zane could return to the classroom by the new year.

“His gallbladder, spleen and liver are back to normal,” said Zane’s dad, Zack. “If we get past all the checks, then we should be good for school in January.”

“The last couple appointments we went to, they did say they (his organs) were shrinking down, but all the doctors still look at me and say ‘we’re learning with you,’” Leah said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, MIS-C is a condition where the body parts become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs. Children with MIS-C may experience fever and

gut pain, vomiting, neck pain, bloodshot eyes and fatigue, among other symptoms. Of the few children admitted, Zane’s symptoms were among the worst, according to doctors.

The Mayo Clinic said there’s more that needs to be learned about the emerging inflammatory syndrome. Children with signs or symptoms should see a doctor.

According to the Mayo Clinic, an antibody test with a positive result means that the child’s immune system developed blood proteins (antibodies) that fought the COVID-19 virus. Sometimes this blood test is the only indication that the child was ever infected — meaning that the child may have fought the infection without ever having signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

Still, some children with MIS-C are currently infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. This is usually confirmed by detection of the virus on a swab taken from the back of the nose or throat.

Zane has faced several life-threatening issues in his young life, as Dr. Stan Zuba said MIS-C attacked the young boy’s body so aggressively that there were times he didn’t know if he was going to pull through. But he did, Zuba says, with outstanding and stateof-the-art care and treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

“The unwavering faith and strength of his parents through this entire ordeal was truly remarkable and clearly kept him fighting to get better,” Zuba said.

Leah said Zane remains in good spirits as he continues his schooling from home.

“They send home the work and we work with him,” Leah said. “For an hour-and-ahalf two days a week, a teacher from PKS

comes over or does it virtually and answers any questions we have. The main part of his school day is us teaching them.”

While Zane is anxious to return to school, Leah said he is also eagerly waiting to ride a bike. Leah said she wanted to take him to find a new bike, but he told her he didn’t want a new set of wheels until he can actually jump on and ride.

“I said I get it but you’re so close,” Leah said.

Leah said they’re amazed with Zane’s progress from his admission into the hospital to today. Leah said her son’s blessed to have the likes of Zuba, the team of doctors at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and a tightknit community.

Leah said she’s learned not to take anything for granted. Staying attentive to her children’s health, she’s urging parents to be proactive and take the necessary steps if they think their children were exposed to COVID-19.

“Listen to your parental intuition 100%,” she said.

odies in the sand, tropical drink melting in your hand, We’ll be falling in love to the rhythm of a steel drum band, Down in Kokomo.”

Released in 1988, this Beach Boys classic was stuck in my head long before I moved to the Florida Keys to restore the reef. It’s not unlikely that Carl Wilson and Mike Love had spent a sunny afternoon or two enjoying our little slice of paradise, and some local tall tales claim that the fictional Kokomo really is a place in the Keys. (You can tell me, is it really the old Holiday Isle bar, now the Postcard Inn?) Legendary tiki bar or not, our island chain and its turquoise waters have been captivating people for decades. Legendary diver and photographer Jerry Greenberg brought the Keys to the main stage with the first color underwater cover for National Geographic.

As interest grew, so did traffic to our waters. Protecting our marine resources became, and remains, paramount to the continued bounty of our oceans and the lives they sustain (wild and human).

Greenberg again galvanized interest in our waters in 1990 when he returned to National Geographic with an expose about the decline of the reef. Rumor has it that this magazine made its way to Washington, D.C., where it influenced national politicians to designate the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary that same year to coordinate and amplify conservation efforts. On Nov. 16, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary turned the big 3-0.

That’s three decades of wonder, of fun, of lives spent by the sea.

It’s also 30 years of watching our corals decline and our fish stocks fluctuate. To be sure, it is a challenging road ahead to restore the reef and bring back what once was. It will take calculated coordination and trust on all sides.

While far from perfect, the sanctuary does aim to tie us all together for the good of our shared treasure: these waters. So, on this milestone birthday, I asked friend Stephen Frink, who’s been taking pictures of our waters since the 1970s, to help me reminisce about all that has happened in 30 years. These are some of his favorite moments in our sanctuary’s history. Hopefully, with our collective help, we’ll have a new collection of images in the next decade to showcase how far we’ve come in restoring this glory.

HEALTHY START RELIEVES PARENTING PRESSURE

P

arenting is tough enough in the best of times.

The past nine months have been among the worst of times for everyone, including pregnant women, new parents and Keys families in general, but help is available and just a phone call away.

“If you’re pregnant, or have a little one at home, just call us,” said Arianna Nesbitt, CEO of Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, the only nonprofit organization in the Keys that exists to help moms and babies. “Let’s talk about what’s going on in your life; what you need and what you don’t even know you need. We can help with formula, diaper deliveries, car seats, parenting classes, prenatal vitamins. So many people don’t even know the ways we can help. We provide some sort of assistance for three out of four babies born in Monroe County.”

Nesbitt said COVID has increased the need for services and has driven more people to seek help since March. The need for diapers alone has quadrupled since March, Nesbitt said, adding that a Miami organization fills this need for Keys families and diapers are delivered every Friday to those who need them.

“We’re hearing from a lot of people who have never needed help before,” she said.

“They’ve always been the givers, the supporters. They’re not in the system. They don’t know what questions to ask,” she said.

Stressed-out moms have difficult pregnancies, Nesbitt said. “And while I can’t pay someone’s rent, I can handle their formula or diapers, which frees up money for rent

and utilities. Just call us. You don’t have to be in crisis to get help. We’re here to help prevent those crises.”

She added that the pandemic has put additional pressure on new parents.

“Maybe grandma can’t travel now to help; maybe dad lost his job; some families have had to give up their vehicles, and others can’t afford wipes and diapers, but they need those things to enroll their child in day care,” Nesbitt said. “There’s so many things that have happened and have put people in a position they never expected.”

An estimated 2,500 Keys families each year receive help from the coalition, which also offers parenting classes, breastfeeding classes, transportation to prenatal appointments and Tot Time and Wiggles & Giggles support groups.

“Healthy Start services are provided free of charge and include, but are not limited to: stress management; home visiting, parenting skills, nutritional information, baby-spacing information, breastfeeding and childbirth education, and assistance with accessing financial assistance for pregnancy costs and infant care costs,” the coalition’s website states.

Several clients have expressed their gratitude for the support they’ve received since the start of the pandemic, while others described their struggle when applying for help. (Nesbitt emphasized that applications do not require income or IRS information or immigration details.)

“The coalition has been great to us,” one client wrote. “My husband lost his job due

to COVID-19 and they have been helping us with our baby diapers. Thanks so much for everything you guys do.”

“Me not having a job and the girls’ dad not working the same number of hours, it’s been very hard to get by. We haven’t been able to pay rent since April. Please help me and my girls. We’re so grateful for people like you, willing to help our community. Thank you!”

Another mom told Nesbitt, “Times are tough and this will definitely help us so much. My kids and I would really appreciate it. Thank you!”

“Due to COVID, I’ve been out of work since March 22 and have yet to receive benefits from unemployment. Thank you for helping take the stress off my shoulders in these trying times,” she said.

“Healthy Start has been there for us when we needed baby clothes and diapers.

They’ve always offered advice and services with no judgment. I couldn’t thank them enough,” a new mom said.

How to help “The best thing about my job and this coalition is that we live here in the Florida Keys community,” Nesbitt said. “If people know there’s a need; they’ll find a way to fill it.”

While cash donations always allow the organization to obtain what’s needed when it’s needed, she added that the coalition also accepts gently used baby clothes; baby beds, high chairs, baby baths, floor play mats, bouncers and other items.

A

baby green sea turtle “washed up” on Coco Plum Beach in Marathon due to Tropical Storm Eta. Days later, when “Lil’ Buddy” died, a necropsy revealed a likely reason for her demise – plastic pollution.

James and Debora Hall found the green sea turtle post-hatchling in some weeds and debris near the water’s edge on Coco Plum Beach and named her. After her rescue and transport to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, she remained in “guarded condition.”

Turtle Hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach noted that there are no green sea turtle nesting sites in the Florida Keys, so “this little one blew in from other islands or another part of Florida,” probably due to heavy winds and currents from Eta. Post-hatchling “washbacks” are baby turtles that hatched out, successfully left their nesting beaches and started to feed in the open ocean, but who are then “washed back” to shore due to winds, currents and/or ill health.

The Florida Keys are home to roughly 100 loggerhead sea turtle nests and a handful of hawksbill sea turtle nests, Zirkelbach said. The closest green sea turtle nesting grounds are in the Marquesas Keys and the Dry Tortugas, so the discovery of such a small green sea turtle is rather unlikely.

Unfortunately, Lil’ Buddy passed away overnight at the Turtle Hospital.

“Post-hatchling sea turtles are young and need to feed and grow rapidly which puts them particularly at risk from the harmful consequences of ingesting plastics,” Zirkelbach explained. “Sadly, Lil’ Buddy fed on so many plastics, there was no chance for her survival.”

W BECOME HAPPIER WHILE YOU SLEEP Tips On maximizing your ZZZs

A

n Irish proverb states, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.”

I don’t know about you, but I treasure my sleep. It’s a luxury to crawl into bed at night and pass out after a productive day. It may sound rather crazy, but it is something that I have at the highest value.

Unfortunately, millions of people have sleep issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a third of people don’t get enough sleep. Not enough sleep can cause anything from type 2 diabetes, heart disease, falling asleep at the wheel, mistakes at work, depression and — let’s not forget — grouchiness.

Some people make fun of me because I go to bed as early as 8 p.m. on an average night. However, I get up at 4 a.m. and maximize my morning. That’s eight hours of excellent sleep.

But what if you are not a great sleeper? What if you have bad dreams or weird dreams? What if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep?

And bigger yet, are you maximizing your deep subconscious thoughts while you are sleeping?

I can’t address all of these challenges in this column, as they are multifaceted, but I can address the need to maximize those subconscious thoughts as you are sleeping.

The need to program your subconscious while you sleep is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson was quoted as saying, “Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.”

Why not? You have nothing to lose. The key is remembering and then taking a few minutes to do it.

Here are some easy steps to follow: Get comfortable and ready to go to sleep.

Have a notepad and pen by your bed.

Relax.

With a clear mind and relaxed state, do whatever of these actions feels the best for you: prayer, gratitude, ask for help, or positive affirmation.

An easy example is: “Thank you for helping me grow my business,” or “I am in perfect health.”

Anything that you feel you would like to say or ask for is OK. There is no judgment, as it is your thoughts and desires.

Once you get in the habit of this, it becomes easier and second nature. But, like anything in life, you have to make it a practice and remember to do it. If you need to put a sticky note by your bed to remember, that will help. Let your mind work for you while you are sleeping. Also, gratitude is a technique that shifts your mindset to the positive. So is prayer, meditation, journaling, etc. Any of the above actions alone or in combination can lead you to a state of happiness and success.

Keep in mind, whatever works for you and fits your beliefs is what you should do. But do it! You will be so happy when you start to see real change!

ho would have ever guessed the year 2020 would include a pandemic known as coronavirus, a tense election with the fallout continuing, civil unrest and one of the most active storm seasons ever?

Let’s not forget the deaths of some highly-respected members of society who had an immense impact on the lives of many: the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, actors Chadwick Bosman and Sean Connery, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, TV hosts Regis Philbin and Alex Trebek, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, to name just a few.

The list goes on and on when looking back at the year that inundated our lives with stress, anger, despair and anxiety in wanting to move to a fresh, new start with 2021 around the corner. We’ve lost family and friends to the coronavirus. We’ve had a heated debate or two over Facebook or in personal conversation. But with all the times of pain and anguish, I’m sure there’s a glimmering moment — minute or grand — or many you can recall.

On the national stage, look no further than SpaceX Dragon 2 making its first crewed flight to the International Space Station in May as part of the Commercial Crew Program. And just recently, a second crewed Dragon flight launched with four astronauts on board in a landmark mission between NASA and SpaceX to return human spaceflight capabilities.

Just north of the island chain, Tampa Bay seems to be the new “title town” with the Lightning snagging the Stanley Cup and the Rays winning the American League pennant. And with Tom Brady in town, the area is buzzing. Sports, especially winning, always seems to take our minds off the negative as fans and the community celebrate.

Then there are the moments we’ve shared with friends and loved ones.

Just recently, a friend of mine I’ve come to know well over the last year had his first baby after waiting a week and a half for his arrival. As he was waiting, I couldn’t help but notice how calm, cool and collected he was. My friend described it as “surreal and awesome” when his young one came into the world. With a grin from ear to ear, there he was holding his little bundle of joy.

There are also the moments we’ve had personally. Jumping out of the comfort zone to try new things like painting and mixed martial arts were

moments I’ll look back on fondly.

But one of the cooler, more eye-opening experiences was my recent visit to see my friend Nicole Navarro of Pawsitive Beginnings Inc. in Key Largo. Those familiar with her story know she’s welcomed four furry friends to her residence in foxes Louie, Libby, Penny and Jasper. Their fur wasn’t deemed valuable due to breeding blemishes, and they were left to die until a midwest rescue came in to save them. Navarro ended up driving to Ohio to get Louie and Libby and north Florida to retrieve Penny and Jasper.

They’ll play and respond to Navarro, but it’s a different story for men, given the trauma they’ve been through in their lives. For Penny, however, her fear seemingly was overcome.

As I met with Navarro, she mentioned she wanted to try something involving Penny and me. The young, red fox was lounging underneath a cot where Navarro raised to give her a treat. Navarro said Penny’s been the most receptive to human interaction.

Navarro then passed a treat to my hand to see if Penny would take it.

With my hand out and treat dangling, I waited as she scratched away at her neck for a minute. When Penny was done, she moseyed on over, put her nose on the treat and within a moment took it gently away from my fingertips.

It was the first time Penny had done such a thing. And never did I think I’d be handing out a treat to a fox.

Families will gather for a Thanksgiving feast, and it may look and feel different than prior gatherings due to the pandemic. It may be easy to fall back and talk about all that 2020 has thrown our way, but don’t forget to look back on that “Penny moment” that brought a smile, a laugh or a good memory.

A TRYING YEAR THROUGH THE WORDS OF LOCALS ‘IT PUT EVERYONE THROUGH AN EMOTIONAL WRINGER’

Editor’s note: A coronavirus pandemic that saw some of the first cases in the Keys in March changed life in a way no one ever could have imagined. A checkpoint kept visitors away from the island chain for a time that affected many jobs from servers to hoteliers. Policies were changed to address coronavirus spread in the community. Ultimately, the Keys reopened to visitors as workers in the tourist industry returned to work. Each week, the Weekly will highlight a local who spent some time to share their 2020 year. This week, Charlotte Twine met up with Jennifer Oughton, 50, who serves at Bayside Gourmet in Islamorada.

some level, though, I get it because not everyone likes to be told what to do. However, it falls under respecting other people’s health issues or ailments.

Describe the year 2020 in one word. (Widens eyes in surprise.) In one word? I want to say, “frustrating.”

Then why do it? Out of respect for others and their well-being.

What was your worst moment of 2020? It wouldn’t be a moment, more like the reality of what this was going to mean for everybody long-term. Meaning the shutdowns, the masks, the social distancing, the cancellation of events and parties … everything became hard.

Was there a moment in particular that brought that realization home? My first time going out to shop at Publix. Experiencing having to wait in line to enter. Also, when my husband’s calendar went from fully booked over the summer to almost completely empty.

That was a shocker for me. He’s a back-country guide.

Do you know anyone who got sick from COVID-19? I do. My brother-in-law in Pennsylvania, age 54. And he recovered in a very timely fashion. And one of my friends in Cape Coral.

She’s early 40s. She’s on the mend and things are looking good for her now.

Do you know anyone who died from COVID-19? No. What got you through the stress? My higher power. And focusing on the good in people.

The sharing amongst my friends and I of uplifting quotes during the day (on social media). It’s refreshing and enlightening to see an uplifting phrase that carries you throughout the day.

(Reads from her phone.) “Life will always be complicated. Learn to be happy right now. Choose joy.”

Did you experience financial stress in 2020 due to the pandemic? Absolutely. Just like everyone else. I was worried about what the future would hold. I was okay for the here and now. However, we know that may change in an instant.

Do you practice social distancing personally? For the most part, yes. I’m aware of who I’m coming in contact with and in general who they have been in contact with.

Do you practice social distancing at work?

As much as possible, yes. I work in a restaurant that’s quite small. And it’s a challenge, but I believe we do the best we can under the circumstances.

Did the social distancing at work cause stress? Yes. Some patrons that come in don’t seem to respect the social distancing requirements as much as I feel they should. But we do the best that we can. I had someone try to get in my face and yell about not wanting to wear the mask, and I had to put my arm out to prevent them from coming closer to me. On

Did you notice any physical symptoms from stress? We have a joke at work. When we can’t come up with words, we come up with, “Words are hard” as a joking phrase a lot. Your brain’s working faster than your mouth. Throughout your day or week, you can have a moment or two, but I’ve never witnessed it day after day with so many people.

What was your best moment of 2020? Not so much as a moment, more like a gratitude for my health and my family’s health, and that I still have a job. At Bayside, owners Anthony and Jaclyn Boffice didn’t skip a beat. Other places didn’t fare as well. I believe the Bayside crew and customers appreciate our ability to continue working. Our locals proved their appreciation by helping to carry us through thus far.

Did you gain the “Quarantine 15?” No, I did not.

How did you avoid that? Sheer luck and genetics.

IT’S OFFICIAL Sheriff promotes six to important positions

S

heriff Rick Ramsay used the annual command staff strategy meeting to officially promote six senior officers within the organization. Capt. Patty Thompson will take over command of the Lower Keys Substation, with Tom Walker as her lieutenant. Major Crimes Unit Detective Vince Weiner will move in as the new director of the Special Operations Unit and Major Crimes Division. Middle Keys Lt. Derek Paul is heading to the Village of Islamorada where he will serve as the new captain or commanding officer. Sgt. Mark Jones was promoted to lieutenant as second-in-command in the Middle Keys to take Paul’s spot. Finally, Middle Keys Detective Leon Bourcier will be promoted to sergeant and fill Jones’ role in Middle Keys road patrol.

Ramsay had praise for each and every one. Both Weiner’s and Walker’s promotions came as a surprise to many, including the recipients.

“It was the longest walk of my life headed down the hall to the sheriff’s office. I was trying to remember what I could possibly be in trouble over,” Walker said.

After the ceremony, where family and friends pinned the newly promoted, staff sneaked in a surprise birthday celebration for Sheriff Ramsay, who turned 55.

The ceremony was followed with the command staff meeting attended by law enforcement partners.

“We are really pushing that partnership,” Ramsay said. “We want to be the biggest gang on the block to combat crime. So we invited our partners to learn about what our priorities are this year, so we can have better coordination among the agencies.”

Besides the Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Fish and Wildlife organizations, there was local representation from agencies such as the FBI, DEA and CIA.

Capt. Derek Paul will serve as commanding officer in Islamorada.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay’s staff conspired to add a birthday surprise — a cake, and a helicopter blade signed by co-workers.

Leon Bourcier was promoted to sergeant to take over road patrol in the Middle Keys.

Captain Patty Thompson will serve as the commanding officer in the Lower Keys.

Lt. Mark Jones will serve as second-incommand to Capt.

Don Hiller in the Middle Keys.

Lt. Tom Walker was promoted from internal affairs to be the second-in-command in the Lower Keys.

Director of Special Investigations Vince Weiner will also oversee the major crimes division.

The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School’s faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.”

Recipients are chosen on qualifications including academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Hurricane Pride,” and for giving us a glimpse into their world.

What is something most people don’t know about you? One thing people do not really know about me is that I have only been out of the state of Florida once.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all-time favorite teacher would have to be Ms. Robertson because she gives good advice and is super helpful.

What does “a good education” mean to you? To me, getting a good education means having fun while gaining knowledge.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? I feel like the dumbest rule at my school would have to be that we cannot go upstairs during lunch. The best is probably being able to sit with people during lunch.

What is something you know now that you did not know when you were a freshman? Do not procrastinate! Also have fun and always participate in spirit weeks.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores and why are they important to you? I am on the basketball and cross-country teams here, and they are important to me because I love being active. I have gained so many new friends and bonds that will never be broken. I am also involved with the yearbook this year, and I am learning so much about journalism.

What are your plans after high school? I plan to go to a public university in the state and get my bachelor’s degree. Then I would like to go to law school.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? My senior quote: “Even though I have no clue what it is going to be yet.”

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I do not have a lot of spare time between school, sports and my job, but when I do I like watching TV and spending time with my family.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not?

As of right now, I want to get out of the Keys for a little while. I have been here almost my entire life, but I would like to come back eventually.

What three things would you like to accomplish before your 10year reunion? I would like to have traveled a lot, become a lawyer, and learn to surf because that seems fun.

Our themes this month are “SALUTE OUR VETS” for Veteran’s Day and “GRATEFUL” for Thanksgiving.

Thank you to all who have served our country. Send us pictures of the veterans you’d like to honor and of what makes you feel grateful with a caption about why.

Rules, schmules: All photos must be original work and feature something in the Keys.

Photos can be images that have been published before.

No third party may own or control any materials the photo contains, and the photo must not infringe upon the trademark, copyright, moral rights, intellectual rights, or rights of privacy of any entity or person.

Any person agrees, by submitting photos, that photos submitted can be used by the Keys Weekly for any and all purposes, including but not limited to advertising, charity work, sales, future editorial, print in the newspapers or online or on social media posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and any other social media platforms as may come about.
