AFTER THE STORM: OFFICIALS SURVEY DAMAGE Storm barely felt in Middle and Lower Keys

n the morning of Nov. 9, Monroe County officials were surveying the damage of Tropical Storm Eta. According to Jon Rizzo of the National Weather Service’s Key West office, the highest wind gust was 71 mph, recorded at the Carysfort Lighthouse, just east of Key Largo. Another unofficial report of a 58 mph wind gust was recorded at Rock Harbor.

“We received reports of winds gusting over 50 mph from Tavernier all the way up to Ocean Reef for several hours from about midnight to predawn on Nov. 9,” he said.

According to the weather service, the eye of Tropical Storm Eta moved across Lower Matecumbe at 11 p.m.

In the Upper Keys, county officials said four homes had “significant” damage caused by falling trees. Also, road work was needed at MM 110-111 where potholes appeared. Florida Keys Electric Cooperative reported that about 1,000 customers were affected by power outages.

“A big thanks to our electric utilities,” said Monroe County Supervisor Roman Gastesi. “I’ve lived here long enough when I remember if it blew 25 and 35 mph, the power would go out for days.”

In fact, one of two main transmission lines into the Keys was down, but the utility said the Keys is well-powered by just one.

Repairs were expected to be complete by 5 p.m. on Nov. 9.

The worst flooding occurred in the Upper Keys on the Oceanside, as well as Barnes and Card Sounds and Blackwater Sound.

The rest of the Florida Keys experienced Tropical Storm Eta very differently. Like Rizzo predicted before the storm made landfall, the heaviest rains and winds were on the outer edges of the storm. As it passed over the Middle Keys, a hole opened up in the sky with little wind or rain.

“The winds were weaker on the south side of the system, as well as near the center,” Rizzo said. “A few thousand feet up, the winds were blowing 30 to 40 mph, but it needed strong showers and squalls to get the wind” on the ground. “We also had sprinkles and drizzle in the Middle and Lower Keys, while the Upper Keys experienced strong showers and lightning strikes. In fact, (mainland) South Florida’s rain totals were much higher — in the double digits.”

ETA BY THE NUMBERS 28 / Tropical Storm Eta was the 28th named storm of the 2020 season, tying the record with 2005. There is now a 29th named storm, Theta, deep in the Atlantic Ocean that poses no threat to land, breaking the record of most named storms in a season.

A TALE OF TREES WITH ETA

One man (and his dog) lucky to be alive; falling trees spare a couple’s home

A

Key Largo man is lucky to be alive after Tropical Storm Eta’s fierce winds uprooted a tree that came toppling onto his residence. Another couple not far away says they’re fortunate two large trees that fell didn’t crash onto their home.

Eta’s presence was felt upon arrival during the evening of Nov. 8 through the morning and afternoon of Nov. 9.

With wind gusts peaking above 60 mph came broken limbs and some toppled trees. For Dylan Deese, who lives on Transylvania Avenue with his dog Aries, a large tree next to his house disrupted his evening.

“This was definitely the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me. Not the first time I’ve split my head open, but the craziest story how,” Deese told the Keys Weekly.

He was enjoying what he calls a “normal Sunday night” watching “Oceans 11” on his couch when he saw a tree “coming through the door.” Then his roof came down and pinned him under debris for a minute.

Deese and Aries got lucky – really lucky. The only part of the house that wasn’t smashed by the enormous tree happened to be the spot Deese was sitting in. He normally relaxes in a recliner, but that day he had chosen to sit on the sofa instead. Part of the roof “stabbed straight through” his favorite

chair. Aries, sensing something, had instinctively run under the kitchen island, which blocked the tree from smashing her. She was curled up under without a scratch; the spot the canine had been sleeping in was “completely trashed,” Deese said.

After Deese freed himself from the rubble, he stood in the pitch black and the pouring rain in his now roofless house. Scared, dazed and streaming blood, his first thought after realizing he was more or less okay was to find his dog. She’d made no noises, and he thought the worst.

“That was the most emotion I’ve ever felt in my life,” a still-tense Deese said.

A neighbor ran out screaming Deese’s name looking for him, and others soon came with flashlights, shoes and a jacket. Once they extracted him from the rubble, one asked Deese if they should call the cops, to which he replied “Yeah. Definitely. There’s a massive tree on my house.”

Deese called it a blessing in and of itself that his neighbors were so quick to come over and put themselves in harm’s way to help. One patched Deese’s head up (he eventually received 13 staples at Mariners Hospital) and others found Aries hiding under the island. Deese broke out crying at the news.

At the hospital, after getting stapled up and a CT to check for internal bleeding, the doctors told Deese he was lucky to be alive and that he could go home. Without a home to go back to, he took a taxi to a neighbor’s house, where he stayed on a cot.

“The wind was still ripping.

I didn’t sleep at all,” said Deese.

“I heard the wind pick up and it was like instant trauma. I was still shaking, still terrified.”

Less than a mile from Deese were Alan and Simona Thomson, who live on Bonito Avenue in Key Largo. Situated on the corner of their property is a ficus. At roughly the same time that Deese found himself trapped under the massive tree, Simona had gone outside to shut her fence gate and noted that the ficus looked like it was going to fall.

Sure enough, it did. The ficus fell around 10:30 p.m.

“I was in the shower when I heard something,” Simona said.

“I came out to find the tree on the fence. Had I not closed the gate door, the tree would have hit the house.”

Not long after the ficus fell, a massive tamarind tree located just behind the Thomsons’ residence split. The tree ended up falling into nearby properties, but no damage was done to their home. Alan said the tamarind toppled some 30 minutes after the ficus tree fell.

“We got lucky,” Alan said as he glanced at both trees the day after Eta’s arrival. “It was a train of storms that lasted three to four hours. It was nonstop.”

Alan said the tamarind tree falling sounded like a “gunshot going off.”

“We heard a big noise and we said ‘what the heck was that?’” Alan said. “My wife looked all through the backyard and she looked out the back window and said a bigger tree was down.”

Eta’s impact was heavily felt in Key Largo as residents woke up the next day to deal with the debris and mess. The Thomsons and Deese say they’re lucky their situations didn’t end up worse.

“If I had moved, got up and walked to the kitchen, been in the bathroom, I would have been done,” Deese said.

“Squished. I feel like there’s someone watching over me. I feel seriously blessed to still be here and to have my dog.”

OBITUARY

Kenneth B. Davis: “Had a good life all the way” Ken Davis, father, husband, brother, friend and son, passed away peacefully Sept. 12, 2020 at Baptist Hospital in Miami. He was 64.

“If I could be anybody in the world, I’d be me.” That’s what Ken would say when asked how he was doing on any particular day.

It’s no surprise. His life included adventures seemingly straight out of a story, he surrounded himself with family he considered friends, and friends he considered family.

While his life was cut too short, it was a full life he was always proud to share and celebrate.

Little made Ken happier than being surrounded by the friends and family he loved so deeply. With them he shared his passion for music, appreciation of a good steak, a good glass of wine or a perfectly made Bacardi and Diet Coke. His love of the ocean paired with what he would call his moderate fishing skills, and an endless love for sunsets.

He also enjoyed a proud career dedicated to public service. At the time of his passing he was vice mayor of Islamorada.

As fate would have it, his career began in Islamorada 40 years ago. In 1980, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard as a member of Coast Guard Intelligence. For six years, he worked as a special agent conducting criminal investigations while tracking deserters. Commendations included the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal for criminal investigations and undercover work, and the Humanitarian Service Medal for special operations.

In 1986, he was recruited by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), beginning his distinguished 22-year career where he earned numerous exceptional performance and service awards from the DEA and other law enforcement agencies.

His work moved him from Florida to California to Washington, D.C., around the world, then finally back to Florida where he retired as the resident-agent-in-charge of the DEA’s Florida Keys Office in Key West. Ken’s investigative and undercover exploits led him to the four corners of the globe, including Mexico, Colombia, Indonesia, Canada, Bali, Aruba and Venezuela, just to name a few. For one case, Ken posed as a major drug trafficker for several weeks on a ship “somewhere” in the middle of the Pacific Ocean; the outcome of that investigation resulted in seizure of several tons of illegal drugs and narcotics.

His work with DEA resulted in several highly successful multi-agency, international investigations targeting some of the world’s most notorious drug trafficking cartels. He directed investigative initiatives resulting in the seizures of large quantities of illicit narcotics, as well as tens of millions of dollars in cash and assets. As the resident-agent-incharge of the Florida Keys, he established

and led the coordinated efforts of local, state and federal agencies as part of a narcotics task force. Even though he rose through the leadership ranks of DEA, his love for undercover case work never wavered. If asked, he would have quickly traded his suit for weeks in ripped jeans and a T-shirt for a deep-cover assignment on a cargo ship on the ocean.

In 2008, Ken retired from his esteemed career with DEA. Soon after, he was on a plane to Baghdad to work as a private contractor. He chronicled his Middle East experience in his essays, “The Road to Baghdad,” that were subsequently published in the Key West Blue Paper. Shortly after leaving, Ken wrote, “I’m sitting in the holding area of Ali Al Salem in Kuwait waiting to be loaded onto a bus for a dark ride to jet somewhere that will take us to Baghdad. We had slept through the car bomb at the main gate, the automatic gun fire and in our deep slumber the hovering helicopter. The living conditions may suck but the jobs are great and so are the people – and as Meatloaf sings, ‘two out of three ain’t bad.’”

While there, he coordinated the execution of electronic surveillance programs as part of counter-intelligence efforts. Never one to miss out on the chance for camaraderie or good conversation, he also founded a weekly “Thursday Night Men’s Club.”

After one year in Baghdad, Ken’s leadership and record of success secured him a position with the Department of Defense, U.S. Army as Intelligence Director of National Information and Investigation Advisory and Transition. He spent the next two years developing investigative practices for Iraqi police in their efforts to proactively prevent terrorism. Ken was awarded the Joint Service Civilian Commendation Medal and the Civilian Global War on Terrorism Medal from the U.S. Army.

In 2011, Ken returned to Islamorada where he attempted to embrace retirement with his wife, Charlotte Porter Davis. They enjoyed their life together – out on the water, sometimes traveling, but most often at home appreciating their piece of island paradise alongside the friends and family Ken affectionately referred to as “good people.”

But after a few years, Ken’s love of the Keys together with his commitment to service led him to enter local politics. He was elected as a member of the village council and vice mayor of Islamorada, a position he has held since 2018. During that time, he strived to always do what he thought was best in order to preserve the village and what made it so special to him and so many others.

Ken considered himself the privileged beneficiary of the many people he loved, befriended, and shared his life with. Along the ever changing path of life he made friends and built a family for which he was incredibly proud. He was dad to Robin (Missy) Schofield Hopp and her husband Steven, Patrick Davis and his fiancée Lauren, and Cayenne Isaksen

and her husband Ken, sharing a special bond with each of them, constantly laughing with them, while guiding and pushing them to be their own best selves.

He was an exceptionally proud “Pops” to five grandsons, Cortland, Colter, Logan, Myles and Carson, with all of whom he was eager to share his love of the ocean and fishing. He was the son to his late mother and father, Geraldine (Gerry) and Bill, the beloved brother of Mary Walden, Becky Hanley, Michael Davis, and William (Bill) Davis who has long referred to Ken as his “hero” for his service to the country. He was also a fun, loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews as well as a stepfather to Hannah and Charles.

Ken believed family was also whoever you make it to be; the list of others who could be named as part of the family he built is long, comprised of the friends and loved ones he brought together along the way.

If you were in a room with Ken Davis – you knew it, his presence filled it. There was no one else like him. He was passionate about everything he did, he had a way with words, and an unmistakable laugh. Along with that, he had a quick wit that he paired with an unmatched blend of sarcasm and charm. He appreciated words and lyrics, always looking for the significance the right ones could bring to a moment. That wit, together with his love for words, also made him a great writer. He wrote two books he hoped to one day publish – one a novel based on his longtime love of Florida and undercover work, the second a compilation of his essays from his time in Baghdad.

Ken was proud of his career and his accomplishments, but he knew the real meaning of life was so much more than that.

He valued true happiness, welcomed the challenges, learned from the hardships and appreciated the moments. A longtime Jimmy Buffett fan, the life Ken lived so well is best captured by one of his favorite songs, “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.”

ropical Storm Eta barreled into the Upper Keys on the evening of Nov. 8 as winds exceeding 60 mph downed large limbs onto roads and homes. Brush covered streets as residents woke up to assess the aftermath and begin cleanup the following morning.

Water inundated some streets, including Stillwright Point and parking lots like Pink Plaza. Utility crews were out restoring power in various Upper Keys communities throughout the day.

Eta’s wicked winds resulted in several trees crashing down onto homes. The Key Largo Fire Department responded to call for major structural damage caused by a falling tree near MM 103 on Sunday night.

Captain Chris Jones said one person was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.

The fire department helped Monroe County Public Works, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Keys Electric Cooperative in clearing roads Monday.

“There were multiple calls (on the night of Nov. 8), but due to high winds and inclement weather, we weren’t allowed to respond, just like most other agencies weren’t responding to anything that wasn’t considered critical. We went out (the next) morning to all the pending calls, which were downed lines and trees across the road,” Jones said.

FKEC said power service from the county line to Seven Mile Bridge held up overnight as Eta mainly wreaked havoc on the Upper Keys. Around 20 outages were seen, affecting around 1,000 FKEC meters.

Large gumbo limbo limbs and other debris had portions of Bonita Avenue and Biscayne Road impassable to vehicle traffic throughout the morning. One gumbo limbo limb fell from Corey and Peg Bryan’s property at the corner of Biscayne Drive and Bonita Avenue, while other limbs fell across the street. The cleanup effort began at 6 a.m. as the two, who work for the sheriff’s office, received help from fellow crews, deputies and neighbors.

“The whole road was closed. It was insane,” Corey said.

Peg said other fallen trees from across the road were stuck in trees on their property.

“I don’t even know how we’re going to get them out,” she said. “Look at that gumbo limbo, you can see where it cracked. If it didn’t get caught in that other tree, it would have fallen into our power line. We’re pretty lucky.”

Virgil Valdes lives across the street from the Bryans at the other corner of Bis-

cayne Road and Bonita Avenue. With chainsaw in hand, Valdes started cutting fallen trees and clearing his residence at 6:30 a.m. He recalled the moment he heard the gumbo limbo limb crash from the Bryans’ property.

“We heard a noise, and I came out and thought something landed on the car. As I came out and looked (across the street), all that just came crashing down,” he said.

Valdes said limbs and debris were falling onto his house all night.

“Crazy,” he said.

Resident Lauren Jenkins said a large tree limb came crashing down onto her vehicle.

“It fell right onto the driver window,” she said.

Near Ballyhoo’s restaurant in Key Largo, a large billboard came crashing down onto an adjacent property. It also brought down a live wire. Francis Fresh Produce’s tent caved in with fruits and vegetables remaining on the table and largely going unscathed. Trees in the medians of U.S. 1 were tipped over, while debris filled the entryway to John Pennekamp State Park. Gates reopened to the public on Nov. 10 for day use, but the campground was under repair.

Further north, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park remained closed to the public as rangers worked to check the trails.

At Stillwright Point in Key Largo, public works crews were spotted pumping water completely covering Sexton Way and a portion of North Blackwater Lane. Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and Assistant County Administrator Kevin Wilson were out surveying the scene and assessing the damage following Eta. Gastesi said he’s concerned about the low-lying areas that continue to see flooding.

“We have special meetings coming later this month. We got a county commission meeting on the 17th that we’ll be talking about it. Then we have another meeting on the 18th to talk about it also.”

Many residents in Stillwright Point parked their cars on higher ground near U.S. 1 to avoid any chances of having to drive their cars through the high waters.

Resident Emilie Caldwell Stewart said Eta felt every bit as bad as Hurricane Wilma.

“My house was moving with the wind gusts,” she said.

As for flooding, Caldwell Stewart said she expected worse than what was witnessed. But they don’t know how high waters will reach in the days to come between tidal flooding that continues to plague the community and more possible rain.

“A lot of people who live here moved their cars toward U.S. 1 because of the anticipated flooding,” she said. “It was the right thing to do, but not so that we can use them … everybody’s afraid their cars would be ruined.”

One item that was a bit of concern for FKEC was the Florida City to Tavernier transmission line that relayed out around 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 and remained out throughout the next morning. Officials say there was a bad insulator on Florida Power and Light’s side of the transmission system near the Aerojet Canal.

FKEC relied on the other main transmission line to deliver power from the mainland to the Florida Keys. A fault between Florida City and Tavernier on the remaining transmission circuit would likely result in an outage affecting the entire Keys. FPL informed FKEC that the extrahigh-voltage repair required special heavy equipment.

Besides debris on the road, Islamorada went unscathed from any major incidents.

A cable wire dangled at Whale Harbor Bridge that required the U.S. Coast Guard’s attention. Utility crews were on scene to resolve the issue.

“We fared really well,” said Islamroada Fire Chief Terry Abel.

Islamorada Fire Rescue completed a pass-through of the village the next morning and identified only minor areas of debris and seaweed that needed to be cleared. No village-wide damage assessments were identified. Public works staff were out conducting some clean-up of rights-of-way.

Village officials say the wastewater system held up well with no water intrusion impacting system operations like that experienced in recent heavy rain events.

Village staff went back to village hall normal operating hours, and the marina and Founders Park amenities reopened.

Monroe County Solid Waste workers swept the Upper Keys area with a clam truck for debris that didn’t fit in the regular yard waste collection, like trees, large tree limbs, mangled patio furniture, or sheds.

Debris that didn’t fit in trash cans or bundled were picked up during regular collection. Debris that doesn’t fit in regular trash collection can be separate yard trash from other trash (metals, roofs, etc.).

Items in the Upper Keys need to be placed curbside by the end of the day on Friday, Nov. 13.

STATE ATTORNEY LOOKS INTO INQUIRY REGARDING WINNER’S RESIDENCY

T

he State Attorney’s Office is looking into an inquiry sent to them by incumbent Democrat Heather Carruthers Heather Carruthers regarding the residency of Monroe County Commission’s District 3 winner Eddie Martinez and whether he resided in the district at Eddie Martinez the time ballots were cast on Election Day. Martinez defeated Carruthers by fewer than 200 votes on Election Day, prompting an automatic recount, which concluded on Nov. 7 and confirmed Martinez’s win.

State Attorney Dennis Ward told the Keys Weekly that Carruthers asked his office if it handles this kind of matter. Ward said he gave it to an investigator to look into.

“What we do with it I don’t know,” Ward said. “We’re still waiting to hear from the Department of State’s Division of Elections to call us back.”

In her communication to Ward, Carruthers said, “I do not think he lives in District 3. Some assert he doesn’t live in Monroe County.”

Martinez, a Republican, secured 23,188 votes to incumbent Democrat Carruthers’ 23,046 votes on Election Day, as confirmed by the recount, which commenced on Nov. 5 by the Monroe County Canvassing Board.

Martinez is dismissing the complaint, and said Carruthers is being “a sore loser who’s bringing up anything she can because she can’t believe she lost. I’ve always had residency there.”

Martinez said his residency in District 3 has been long established, but he acknowledges that he spent several weeks during the campaign hospitalized due to five surgeries related to gallbladder issues.

The county’s elections website lists Martinez’ address as 1100 Truman Ave., Key West.

“She has nothing else to blame or complain about,” Martinez said about Carruthers’ surprising defeat.

The District 3 boundaries, Martinez said, are “from White Street toward downtown, and from Bertha Street to the beach. And I am well within those boundaries.”

Carruthers told the Weekly on Friday that she was taught in school that “this is called ‘carpetbagging.’

“It’s a shame the citizens of District 3 won’t be represented by someone who really knows this community,” she said.

When asked whether Martinez’s residency had been a concern all along, or had just come to light, Carruthers said, “It’s been a concern to me all along, but residency has always been hard to prove. (Supervisor of Elections) Joyce Griffin brought up the issue regarding his residency over voting, which is a felony. The guy has a lawsuit pending against him and Danny Coll’s wife is trying to serve him papers due to a dispute with a house he had been renting from them on Key Haven.”

The recount for the County Commission District 3 seat ended Nov. 7 and confirmed Republican Eddie Martinez’s defeat of incumbent Democrat Heather Carruthers by 142 votes.

Man charged after allegedly spearfishing undersized lobster A Miami man was charged after a search of his vehicle by Florida Fish & Wildlife revealed that he allegedly spearfished a tarpon and lobster, five of which were undersized. FWC reports that Officer Tom Tafoya responded to a call on Nov. 1 regarding subjects spearfishing at Channel 5 Bridge.

When Tafoya arrived he saw two people snorkeling on the southwest side of the bridge near a rocky outcrop.

The officer noticed that one of the individuals had a speargun in his hand.

Tafoya received permission to search the vehicle, where he found a speared tarpon and seven lobster. Eduardo Veliz Fabrega, of Miami, was charged with misdemeanors for speared tarpon, spearfishing in the Upper Keys and possession of undersized lobsters.

Key Largo Bridge Run introduces a new challenge The 2020 First State Bank Key Largo Bridge Run introduces the 2020 First State Bank Bridge the Gap Virtual Challenge.

“Our goal is to keep people motivated and healthy as they look forward to coming back to Key Largo in 2021,” says race director Henry Menendez. “I will actually be able to participate this year virtually with all my fellow runners and walkers.”

All registrants will receive a shirt and finishers medal upon completion of their challenge. In addition, all proceeds will go to the Key Largo Rotary Club. Make this a safe and happy holiday season The Monroe County Sheriff's Office will be out in force watching out for drunk and unsafe drivers this month, through Thanksgiving weekend and during the month of December with the goal of making sure holiday travel is as safe as possible in the Keys.

Deputies will be concentrating their efforts on drunk drivers, improper passing and other unsafe driving practices throughout the upcoming season in an effort to save lives and make this holiday season a safe and enjoyable one for everyone.

So, as you attend special holiday events, designate a sober driver or take a cab home if you decide to drink alcoholic beverages. Whatever you choose to do, don't drink and drive.

Remember: if you drink and drive and get caught, you will be spending the night in jail.

Also, be aware that the holidays are often ripe with reports of scams and theft. Be wary of those collecting money over the phone, particularly if they ask for donations with gift cards. That should always be a red alert.

Residents should know that government agencies (as well as law enforcement agencies and utility companies) will always send you notification of an issue via the mail or in person. Always be alert on the phone. Ask for proof via a letter in the mail.

ith Election Night over and results in, a new Islamorada Village Council will convene for its first meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19. Several newcomers, as well as those familiar with the various facets of village operations, will enter the dais.

The village’s five seats will see new faces from the previous council, with Jim Mooney moving on to represent the Keys in Tallahassee as state representative and Mike Forster the winner of Monroe County Commission’s seat 5, which represents Key Largo to Tavernier. Chris Sante elected not to run for another term, while Deb Gillis termed out.

12 from a heart failure and stroke.

That left Henry Rosenthal as the lone candidate in the race for seat 4, which the Monroe County Elections Office determined him to be the winner.

The dais welcomes Pete Bacheler, Mark Gregg, Joseph “Buddy” Pinder, Rosenthal and David Webb. Bacheler, who unofficially received 2,251 votes to challenger Frank Lavin’s 1,785, votes, is a 35-year resident of the village.

Serving for six years as chairman of the Land Planning Agency, Bacheler said there are a few matters the village must address quickly when council convenes, notably the selection of the next manager with Seth Lawless’ departure. Maria Bassett, who serves as the village’s finance director, is the acting manager.

“City manager ads must go out as soon as possible. Then we need to establish a committee to review the manager to decide and whittle it down to, say, three to five candidates,” he said. “Then, council will interview and personally meet the candidates.”

Bacheler said the village also needs a charter review committee to review items that may need changing within the village charter.

“It’s very important, and we haven’t been getting around to it,” he said.

Seat 2 will see Mark Gregg, a 35year resident of the village who served on council from 2000 to 2004. He was mayor one year and vice mayor for another. He’s also been a member of the village Land Planning Agency and served on the Achievable Housing Committee. Gregg was in a close race, having secured 2,187 votes unofficially to challenger Cheryl Meads’ 2,088 votes.

Along with manager and charter matters, Gregg said he’s keenly interested in affordable housing. While it’s not as urgent as the village manager selection, Gregg said “permit armageddon” in 2023 isn’t far away.

“The essence is when BPAS (building permit allocation system) comes to an end and build-out as far as new permits, and 700 people who own lots who don’t have a permit, we want to start the process on how we’re going to deal with that internally and with the county and state,” he said.

Gregg said he’s looking forward to building a rapport with the other council members. Through his experience on the council, developing relationships with others is critical.

“There will be some items that some council members will feel strongly in favor of or against. How that gets handled is important,” he said. “I don’t want a council where there are 3-to-2 votes. I’d much rather we work together and it’s 5-0. It shows strength working together as a team.”

Longtime resident and council newcomer Joseph “Buddy” Pinder won seat 3 with an unofficial 2,307 votes to Jenny Bell-Thomson’s 1,986 votes.

Pinder says he’s excited to jump in and work for the betterment of the village, its residents and businesses. Among the matters Pinder said he’ll be looking into will be the pedestrian bridge by Founders Park. Work is already underway to move utilities to make way for the $4.68-million project funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.

FDOT officials said a ground-breaking is anticipated by the end of the year.

Seat 5 winner David Webb unofficially gathered 2,293 votes in a win over Larry Zettwoch, who secured 1,692 votes. A seven-year resident of the Keys, Webb is a retired FedEx pilot and president of the Port Antigua Property Owners Association.

As the leader of the association representing more than 4,000 FedEx pilots for nearly 10 years and president of the Port Antigua group, representing over 300 property owners on Lower Matecumbe for two years, Webb said he’s refined his ability to bring diverse groups of people with sometimes conflicting objectives together through honest, open and respectful interaction. “(It was) a big win for the residents of Islamorada,” Webb said following the election results. “Hoping the new council will be able to close ranks for the benefit of our amazing community.”

Votes weren’t counted for seat 4 by the elections office due to the passing of Davis on Sept. 12. As a result, Rosenthal was deemed the next councilman for the seat. A notice went out to village voters informing them that a “candidate in the race for the office of Village Council Seat 4 has passed away, resulting in an unopposed candidate.”

The notice went on to state that a vote cast in the race will not change the outcome as the remaining candidate is deemed by law to be elected for that race.

A lawsuit was filed requesting all votes count in the race since Davis qualified before the deadline. An emergency hearing on the matter wasn’t granted, however, as the notice was sent out to village voters. The lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed before the election.

Rosenthal said he’ll be ready come Nov. 19.

“I intend to be fair and impartial. I think we’ll just do fine,” he said.

nama’ki, a 15-foot, 2,076-pound adult female great white shark, is the latest "snowbird" visiting the Florida Keys. She “pinged” off Key Largo during early morning of Nov. 5, setting off excitement for environmentalists and shark enthusiasts.

Nonprofit shark research group Ocearch fitted Unama’ki with an electronic tracking device in September 2019. Scientists from the nonprofit confirmed that she was indeed visiting Florida. She was northeast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean last week and pinged off Vero Beach on Nov. 8. In early August, Ocearch scientists tracked her off Nova Scotia, showing just how far the shark has migrated since.

Similar to what she did last year, scientists expect her to circle the Keys and move into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ocearch is tracking Unama’ki – whose name means “Land of the fog” in the language of the indigenous peoples of Nova Scotia – along with two other large great whites, in hopes of learning where the massive predators give birth and exposing a new great white shark nursery.

Unama’ki is one of the largest sharks Ocearch has tagged in the North Atlantic Ocean, beaten only by a 16-foot female tagged in 2012.

young Spencer Slate was drawn to water sports.

“I watched Mike Nelson on television in the ’50s and ’60s.

‘Sea Hunt’ got me interested in diving. I got mail order dive equipment from a sporting goods store,” he said.

Slate was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1947. His family lived in town but had a pasture behind the house where he kept a horse he rode.

He joined the Army and served from 1972 to 1976 in a MASH unit.

Slate dove all through college with the Wake Forest University dive club. He graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville. On breaks, he’d come down to the Florida Keys to dive.

In 1972, he moved to Jacksonville, where he took up a post teaching business in high school. He became a YMCA instructor and taught diving at Jacksonville’s YMCA. In 1978, Slate moved to Key Largo.

“I borrowed money from a government program to buy a business and boat,” he said. “When I came to the Keys, Steve Klem was a legend. He was called the ‘Pied Piper of Pennekamp Park.’ He befriended me. That’s how I got started feeding critters. I took over Steve’s critters and began feeding some of my own.”

Slate feeds marine creatures underwater, and the interaction enables divers to see large marine animals up close. The state of Florida banned feeding underwater but allows fishermen to chum for fish. The ruling is an anomaly, yet enforced. Slate respects the law and feeds only in permitted areas more than 3 miles offshore in federal waters where feeding is allowed.

Slate moved his dive operation to newly refurbished headquarters at MM 90.7 on the oceanside in Tavernier. He moved into his new dive shop, school and compressor facility in February 2014. His three dive boats are moored out back. It is a short passage out to Tavernier Creek to the Atlantic Ocean.

Slate is his own man. He still has fun diving and he’s been at it 58 years.

His son Hunter began diving at 10. His daughter Sky began diving when she was 11.

Feeding wild marine life is not without risk. Slate uses teflon gloves to protect his hands.

“The doctor told me if I get one more bite on this finger, he’s just going to cut it off,” he laughed.

Magazine articles featured pictures of this veteran diver feeding barracuda from his mouth. He produced a mask that was knocked off his head when a favorite barracuda missed. The mask is chewed up. The skirt is scarred with teeth marks.

“I called him ‘Psycho.’ I’d hold sardines in my mouth for him to take them.

That’s a 5-foot barracuda. He bit my mouth off. I had to have 29 stitches in my head. That’s the most stitches I ever had. ‘Psycho’ beat me up more than any of them,” Slate recalled.

“I do it not for show. I do it to demonstrate that these ‘dangerous’ marine critters can interact with divers. Divers can understand them, then respect and protect these animals. I do not even have a fishing pole. I take nothing out of the ocean. I don’t spearfish,” he added.

Slate is a National Association of Diving Instructors (NADI) dive instructor and course director. He is also a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) instructor. He served as chairman of the now-defunct national YMCA scuba program and has been chairman of the board of trustees of the College of the Florida Keys. In 2006 Slate ran for Florida state legislature. “I didn’t win but it was a lot of fun. I wouldn’t say yes if I wanted to say no,” he laughed.

JENNA MANDOZZI SEVENTH GRADE What is something most people don’t know about you? Most people don’t know that I am not as quiet as I seem to people who don’t know me.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? My all-time favorite teacher is definitely Ms. Bobbi because she always makes jokes and understands how it feels to be overwhelmed.

What is your favorite subject and why? My favorite subject is definitely science because I feel a lot more comfortable with the teacher and the work is not too overwhelming.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at TVM? Last year while leadership was going on I was a part of that and I am very proud to be a part of unified track.

What is the best rule at your school?

I feel the best rule at TVM is the no bullying because I think that’s a way to just not feel good about yourself and makes the other person in an uncomfortable situation that nobody wants.

What is your favorite food for lunch?

My favorite food for lunch is Publix

macaroni and cheese or Publix sub.

What do you want to be when you grow up and why? I really would like to be two things. One of my dream jobs is to continue a soccer career for me and keep going with something I love. Another dream job of mine is to be a dolphin trainer.

What do you hope to be remembered for at TVM? I hope to be remembered as a 13-year-old kid who struggled in school but set her mind to many goals that you could achieve if you tried.

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? One of my favorite ways to spend my free time is to try and get a soccer ball at my feet no matter what I’m doing. I also really enjoy playing with my puppy Bean.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home in the future? Why or why not? No, I don’t think the Keys will be my permanent home. I really would love to move to North Carolina. The reason why I would like to move to North Carolina is because I wanna be as close to the beach as I can and I also love seeing dolphins, turtles and just the beach view brings me joy like the soccer field.

strong running attack propelled the Florida Christian Patriots (4-3) to a 23-6 victory against the Coral Shores Hurricanes on senior night at Barley Stadium on Nov. 6. The Canes’ lone touchdown came in the second quarter from junior running back Osvaldo Vega, who scored on a 15-yard run. It was set up by a 25-yard run on the prior play by junior running standout Chris Cooper.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman defensive end Isaac Holmes recorded two tackles behind the line, while senior cornerback Jackson Hilson recorded an interception.

Sophomore cornerback Alexander Gutierrez recorded a sack.
