arathon council and its citizens finally have a drawing to look at of a possible splash park. Last month, the council asked staff to select the most suitable location as a first step and the result is a corner of Marathon Community Park currently occupied by the skatepark. Outgoing city manager Chuck Lindsey told the council that the location is ideal because it has the proper infrastructure.

“It works holistically for more than just daily operations, but also with other events,” said Lindsey.

The design of the splash park includes more than one water feature, pavilions, space for tables and loungers, and a building to house an attendant and lockers.

The proposed rebuild of the skatepark would be across the parking lot, on the eastern edge of the park and would feature a concrete “bowl.” Lindsey said that building a concrete park only costs $5 to $10 more per square foot than a wooden structure. He also said it’s possible the skatepark could

generate revenue by hosting professional and competitive skateboarding events.

“The skatepark is used by a lot of kids. Any evening there are about 20 kids using it,” Lindsey said. “What I recommend is moving it to the other side of the parking lot and constructing it out of concrete instead of wood. Every year, for as long as I can remember, we’ve had to allocate funds to make the improvements to that park. It’s a daily chore and the repairs only last so long.”

The next step is for the city to put out the project to bid.

“I would hire separate designers for each side of the project, though.

I don’t think you want a skatepark designer to design a splash pad or vice versa,” Lindsey said.

In other news: • After searching the city’s database, it was discovered that twothirds, or 68%, of vacation rentals in Marathon have out-of-town owners/ managers who, presumably, hire locals to take care of the properties. Growth

Management Director Doug Lewis told the council that will make enforcing rules regarding trash and litter more challenging. The council directed staff to perform “drive-bys” on Mondays and Thursdays in problem areas, notify managers, and then follow up within an hour to see if the area has been cleaned up (as stated in the city’s vacation rental code). At that point, the city will start issuing citations. The City of Marathon currently has 748 vacation rentals registered.

“If the tickets go to the homeowner — wherever they are, Nova Scotia — and they keep getting ticket after ticket, at some point they are going to realize their staff is not doing their job,” said Councilman Mark Senmartin.

• City staff has written a $3.3 million grant application for the Old Quay property. If awarded, the funds would pay for a new seawall, trails, etc.

• The Marathon Seafood Festival organizers made an early, informal application for use of Marathon Community Park and waiver of impact fees in order to begin planning. The organizers agreed to update the council in the new year. The Seafood Festival is typically held mid-March.

NO CURFEW FOR KEY WEST — YET BUSINESSES UNITE IN OPPOSITION; OFFICIALS SEEK COOPERATION, COMMUNICATION

ey West officials considered, but ultimately withdrew, a proposed curfew that would have forced bars and restaurants to close from midnight to 7 a.m.

Instead, the City Commission agreed to work more closely with local bars and restaurants to increase enforcement of masks, hand-washing and social distancing while still sending a welcoming message to visitors.

More than 120 people tuned in to the Nov. 10 emergency City Commission meeting via Zoom, and not one spoke in favor of the midnight curfew for bars and restaurants, which currently can stay open till 4 a.m.

After the withdrawal, Mayor Teri Johnston called for a COVID update at each meeting, and acknowledged the repeated suggestion from members of the public that officials consult regularly with representatives in the bar and restaurant industry.

“We do have repeat offenders and I think we need some of the others in the industry who are doing things right to speak up and tell some of these others that they could ruin it for everyone else,” Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover said.

Dr. Jack Norris, chief of staff at Lower Keys Medical Center, acknowledged that there is no specific scientific basis for closing bars and restaurants and prohibiting alcohol sales between midnight and 7 a.m., as officials considered at the special meeting.

“Madame Mayor, if one person in this meeting thought a curfew would curtail COVID, there’s not a person in this room who would not support it,” business owner Michael Halpern told the city commissioners. “But to single out the bar and restaurant industry is enormously unfair. We have to treat all businesses equally and we have to respect COVID. It has no respect for time.

It does respect masks and social distancing.”

“How do we get people to wear masks and follow our rules for masks, hand-washing and social distancing?” Johnston asked.

Scott Atwell, executive vice president of the Key West Chamber, reminded officials that the chamber staff answers the phone calls from people inquiring about a Key West vacation.

“If we have to say that Key West is shutting down at midnight, it’s going to impact everyone. It doesn’t send a very welcoming message,” Atwell said. “This will exponentially impact everyone during an already slow time. We at the chamber stand ready to help by using our vast social network to communicate our message that welcomes people to Key West and asks them to play by our rules. But closing at midnight — I can’t spin that.”

Michael Morawki, owner of the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, also reminded the commissioners, “It’s not what you say, but how you say it.”

“Madame Mayor, I’m sorry to tell you, we will not get 100% success with wearing masks,” Morawski said. “All we can do is ask people as nicely as possible and show them gratitude for doing things necessary to protect us and our staff.

We should be thanking people for coming to our island and helping us recover from this crisis. Any time you create a situation where you’re telling people what to do, you won’t create the best outcome.”

Johnston reminded some speakers that the city of Key West continues to have a mask mandate in place.

Lynne Hernandez, South Florida regional director of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, told the commissioners, “There is not a more giving, or more self-regulating, industry than Key West bars and restaurants,” but she strongly encouraged the officials not to further cut workers’ hours and income. In a letter she sent on behalf of the FRLA, Hernandez summarized many business owners’ and workers’ sentiments about the curfew: “Shutting the city down at midnight sends a negative message and image to our potential guests considering Key West for their next trip, corporate meeting or wedding, equating to millions of dollars of lost revenue to the area. Your actions are completely contradictory to the approved messaging for tourism. Now is not the time to reimpose undue restrictions on your local businesses without clear and concise proof warranting such egregious measures. A midnight curfew is a business and job killer in a city already challenged to find staffing. If you do not listen to your constituency and make the mistake of voting to pass a midnight curfew, you will be directly responsible for revenue and job loss in Key West. Are you prepared to supplement this loss for local families?...

Have you also carefully considered a grant program to reimburse the hospitality industry for their staff’s lost hours and wages? Will you reimburse restaurants, hotels and bars for costs associated with lost revenue, job loss and cancellations? If not, vote no on a midnight curfew. Your decision will directly impact families, your friends and your neighbors. This proposal is an unfounded action that lacks merit or reasoning. We expect our elected officials to represent the voice of the citizens. Your actions do not represent the desires or best interests of your constituents. We do not want our businesses to go backwards. We do not want a midnight curfew and you should not either.”

THE STORM THAT WASN’T

Middle Keys spared by Eta

N

ot gonna lie, at one point I was tempted to walk outside and throw a rock to see if I could make a dent in the force field shielding Marathon from Tropical Storm Eta. I was imagining something like the scene in “Catching Fire” when Peeta hits the edge of the dome with a machete in the Hunger Games trilogy and lightning forks out in every direction.

Seriously, it was like the hand of God opened a hole up over the Middle Keys as the rest of Tropical Storm Eta twirled around us.

On Grassy Key, the rainfall was more like sideways mist, not even a drizzle. And the tops of the trees were dancing, but not in a threatening way.

My friends who live on the water nearby said it was a good blow.

Again, though, nothing aggressive.

As much as the meteorologists warn us not to look at the center line, we still do; especially when it’s dark and we’re bored. That also holds true for other weather apps. At my house, my husband was glued to the My Radar app. He rightly predicted that what looked like the center of the storm — the tightest twist in the wind direction — would move right over the Middle Keys. It did, but it turns out that wasn’t the strongest part of the storm (more on that later).

As end-of-the-line consumers of hurricanes, we’re “trained” to believe the smallest circulation of wind twist will also mean high wind speed. Of course, we can only “see” that on a device. And when standing outside or looking out the window and it doesn’t match, well, gosh, I guess that just means … WE’RE LUCKY.

He was right.

He also said another thing to me, years ago, that still rings true: “Hurricanes, or storms, are like snowflakes. Each one is different.” Storms can have different tracks, different intensity, different forward speed. It’s foolish to compare one storm to another, impending storm no matter how many hurricanes you’ve lived to tell about. For instance, Upper Keys residents will remember Tropical Storm Eta much differently than people who live in the Middle or Lower Keys.

As far as my own Tropical Storm Eta preparations, I was prudent. An extra run to the grocery store for snacks — something salty, something sweet and something alcoholic, that’s my rule of thumb — and I took down the sunshades.

As I leaned over to kiss my husband goodnight, not knowing what the storm would or wouldn’t be, I whispered, “If I had put up the shutters I would be SO MAD right now. Good night, honey.”

STATE ATTORNEY LOOKS INTO INQUIRY REGARDING WINNER’S RESIDENCY

T

he State Attorney’s Office is looking into an inquiry sent to them by incumbent Democrat Heather Carruthers Heather Carruthers regarding the residency of Monroe County Commission’s District 3 winner Eddie Martinez and whether he resided in the district at Eddie Martinez the time ballots were cast on Election Day. Martinez defeated Carruthers by fewer than 200 votes on Election Day, prompting an automatic recount, which concluded on Nov. 7 and confirmed Martinez’s win.

State Attorney Dennis Ward told the Keys Weekly that Carruthers asked his office if it handles this kind of matter. Ward said he gave it to an investigator to look into.

“What we do with it I don’t know,” Ward said. “We’re still waiting to hear from the Department of State’s Division of Elections to call us back.”

In her communication to Ward, Carruthers said, “I do not think he lives in District 3. Some assert he doesn’t live in Monroe County.”

Martinez, a Republican, secured 23,188 votes to incumbent Democrat Carruthers’ 23,046 votes on Election Day, as confirmed by the recount, which commenced on Nov. 5 by the Monroe County Canvassing Board.

Martinez is dismissing the complaint, and said Carruthers is being “a sore loser who’s bringing up anything she can because she can’t believe she lost. I’ve always had residency there.”

Martinez said his residency in District 3 has been long established, but he acknowledges that he spent several weeks during the campaign hospitalized due to five surgeries related to gallbladder issues.

The county’s elections website lists Martinez’ address as 1100 Truman Ave., Key West.

“She has nothing else to blame or complain about,” Martinez said about Carruthers’ surprising defeat.

The District 3 boundaries, Martinez said, are “from White Street toward downtown, and from Bertha Street to the beach. And I am well within those boundaries.”

Carruthers told the Weekly on Friday that she was taught in school that “this is called ‘carpetbagging.’

“It’s a shame the citizens of District 3 won’t be represented by someone who really knows this community,” she said.

When asked whether Martinez’s residency had been a concern all along, or had just come to light, Carruthers said, “It’s been a concern to me all along, but residency has always been hard to prove. (Supervisor of Elections) Joyce Griffin brought up the issue regarding his residency over voting, which is a felony. The guy has a lawsuit pending against him and Danny Coll’s wife is trying to serve him papers due to a dispute with a house he had been renting from them on Key Haven.”

The recount for the County Commission District 3 seat ended Nov. 7 and confirmed Republican Eddie Martinez’s defeat of incumbent Democrat Heather Carruthers by 142 votes.

n the morning of Nov. 9, Monroe County officials were surveying the damage of Tropical Storm Eta. According to Jon Rizzo of the National Weather Service’s Key West office, the highest wind gust was 71 mph, recorded at the Carysfort Lighthouse, just east of Key Largo. Another unofficial report of a 58 mph wind gust was recorded at Rock Harbor.

In the Upper Keys, county officials said four homes had “significant” damage caused by falling trees. Also, road work was needed at MM 110-111 where potholes appeared. Florida Keys Electric Cooperative reported that about 1,000 customers were affected by power outages.

“A big thanks to our electric utilities,” said Monroe County Supervisor Roman Gastesi. “I’ve lived here long enough when I remember if it blew 25 and 35 mph, the power would go out for days.”

In fact, one of two main transmission lines into the Keys was down, but the utility said the Keys is well-powered by just one.

Repairs were expected to be complete by 5 p.m. on Nov. 9.

The worst flooding occurred in the Upper Keys on the Oceanside, as well as Barnes and Card Sounds and Blackwater Sound.

The rest of the Florida Keys experienced Tropical Storm Eta very differently. Like Rizzo predicted before the storm made landfall, the heaviest rains and winds were on the outer edges of the storm. As it passed over the Middle Keys, a hole opened up in the sky with little wind or rain.

“The winds were weaker on the south side of the system, as well as near the center,” Rizzo said. “A few thousand feet up, the winds were blowing 30 to 40 mph, but it needed strong showers and squalls to get the wind” on the ground. “We also had sprinkles and drizzle in the Middle and Lower Keys, while the Upper Keys experienced strong showers and lightning strikes. In fact, (mainland) South Florida’s rain totals were much higher — in the double digits.”

A TALE OF TREES WITH ETA

One man (and his dog) lucky to be alive; falling trees spare a couple’s home

A

Key Largo man is lucky to be alive after Tropical Storm Eta’s fierce winds uprooted a tree that came toppling onto his residence. Another couple not far away says they’re fortunate two large trees that fell didn’t crash onto their home.

Eta’s presence was felt upon arrival during the evening of Nov. 8 through the morning and afternoon of Nov. 9. With wind gusts peaking above 60 mph came broken limbs and some toppled trees. For Dylan Deese, who lives on Transylvania Avenue with his dog Aries, a large tree next to his house disrupted his evening.

“This was definitely the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me. Not the first time I’ve split my head open, but the craziest story how,” Deese told the Keys Weekly.

He was enjoying what he calls a “normal Sunday night” watching “Oceans 11” on his couch when he saw a tree “coming through the door.” Then his roof came down and pinned him under debris for a minute.

Deese and Aries got lucky – really lucky. The only part of the house that wasn’t smashed by the enormous tree happened to be the spot Deese was sitting in. He normally relaxes in a recliner, but that day he had chosen to sit on the sofa instead. Part of the roof

“stabbed straight through” his favorite chair. Aries, sensing something, had instinctively run under the kitchen island, which blocked the tree from smashing her. She was curled up under without a scratch; the spot the canine had been sleeping in was “completely trashed,” Deese said.

After Deese freed himself from the rubble, he stood in the pitch black and the pouring rain in his now roofless house. Scared, dazed and streaming blood, his first thought after realizing he was more or less okay was to find his dog. She’d made no noises, and he thought the worst.

“That was the most emotion I’ve ever felt in my life,” a still-tense Deese said.

A neighbor ran out screaming Deese’s name looking for him, and others soon came with flashlights, shoes and a jacket. Once they extracted him from the rubble, one asked Deese if they should call the cops, to which he replied “Yeah. Definitely. There’s a massive tree on my house.”

Deese called it a blessing in and of itself that his neighbors were so quick to come over and put themselves in harm’s way to help. One patched Deese’s head up (he eventually received 13 staples at Mariners Hospital) and others found Aries hiding under the island. Deese broke out crying at the news.

At the hospital, after getting stapled up and a CT to check for internal bleeding, the doctors told Deese he was lucky to be alive and that he could go home. Without a home to go back to, he took a taxi to a neighbor’s house,

where he stayed on a cot.

“The wind was still ripping.

I didn’t sleep at all,” said Deese.

“I heard the wind pick up and it was like instant trauma. I was still shaking, still terrified.”

Less than a mile from Deese were Alan and Simona Thomson, who live on Bonito Avenue in Key Largo. Situated on the corner of their property is a ficus. At roughly the same time that Deese found himself trapped under the massive tree, Simona had gone outside to shut her fence gate and noted that the ficus looked like it was going to fall.

Sure enough, it did. The ficus fell around 10:30 p.m.

“I was in the shower when I heard something,” Simona said.

“I came out to find the tree on the fence. Had I not closed the gate door, the tree would have hit the house.”

Not long after the ficus fell, a massive tamarind tree located just behind the Thomsons’ residence split. The tree ended up falling into nearby properties, but no damage was done to their home. Alan said the tamarind toppled some 30 minutes after the ficus tree fell.

“We got lucky,” Alan said as he glanced at both trees the day after Eta’s arrival. “It was a train of storms that lasted three to four hours. It was nonstop.”

Alan said the tamarind tree falling sounded like a “gunshot going off.”

“We heard a big noise and we said ‘what the heck was that?’” Alan said. “My wife looked all through the backyard and she looked out the back window and said a bigger tree was down.”

Eta’s impact was heavily felt in Key Largo as residents woke up the next day to deal with the debris and mess. The Thomsons and Deese say they’re lucky their situations didn’t end up worse.

“If I had moved, got up and walked to the kitchen, been in the bathroom, I would have been done,” Deese said.

“Squished. I feel like there’s someone watching over me. I feel seriously blessed to still be here and to have my dog.”

arathon High School’s cross-country team has one more obstacle to overcome — the state championship in Tallahassee this weekend. Well, two if you count the weather.

“It’s possible Tallahassee will be impacted by Tropical Storm Eta,” said coach Jim Murphy. “It’s been a unique year.”

Both the MHS boys’ and the girls’ cross country teams qualified for the state championship, besting the COVID-19 rules that dictate only the top four teams in each region are allowed to participate. At regionals this past week, the boys’ team placed second, and the girls’ team placed third.

“That was our goal, to have both teams qualify for the state championship for the second year in a row,” said Murphy. Marathon High School was the only team from the Keys that qualified to race in the state championships. Murphy said the team was able the balance their individual health while also emphasizing the team effort and accomplishments.

This will be the last race for six seniors — twins Owen and Jonathan Pitchford, twins Allison and Sarah Paskiewicz, Haley Buxton, Katerina Nikiforova and Patrick De Medeiros.

In all, there are eight girls and six boys headed to the state championship.

Weather aside, Tallahassee is a welcome destination for Marathon runners as many students record personal records at the culminating race of the year. In 2020, the race has been divided, however, to make for smaller groups of runners. MHS’s 1A division will compete on Friday morning, Nov. 13.

“It’s just a fast race. Even though there’s a gigantic hill they have to run up twice, I think the atmosphere gets the student athletes into the zone,” Murphy said.

SPLASH PLUS year, expand the allowed commercial use of its retail and restaurants, and confirmed the nonresidential commercial floor area of up to 11,500 feet. Representatives for Marlin Bay Yacht Club withdrew — and said they will re-write and submit again — petitions to convert market rate building rights to transient residential units (or hotel rooms) and remove affordable deed restrictions on 8 units already developed in lieu of payment to the city’s affordable housing fund. Neither is currently allowed under the city’s code. The entire motion to amend the developer’s agreement almost failed, however, when Councilman Dan Zieg noted there was a code violation against the property for renting rooms by the night, which the facility does not have permission to do. Attorney Bart Smith said he would address the alleged infraction with Marlin Bay’s operators. “I will work with my client on a response to that,” he said.

• Right next door to Marlin Bay Yacht Club, Boat Works LLC submitted a revised development agreement for the property that would include up to 20 market rate units, 83,000 square feet of commercial space and 32 boat slips (22 for transient captains, and 10 for permanent liveaboards). The development currently has 12 of the needed 20 market rate building rights.

• The City of Marathon agreed to replat a piece of property on 11th street into seven parcels for singlefamily homes, plus an extra communal area co-owned by all. The common area is required because the lots are smaller than normally allowed, while still meeting the density rules.

• Since 2018, the Building Department has paid out almost $160,000 to builders seeking a refund for private inspectors and plan reviewers instead of utilizing city personnel. Now, the city is giving an upfront discount: 13% off the building fee permit for private inspectors when noted at the time of application or 25% off the permit fee for private inspectors and plan reviewers at the time of application. Builders who decide to use private inspectors or plan reviewers after the permit is issued will pay a $200 administrative fee.

Once the first city inspection is completed, builders cannot elect to have a private provider.

s usual, the Marathon City Council passed the gavel at the first meeting following a November election. Outgoing Mayor Steve Cook thanked family, friends and staff for meeting the tough challenges presented by 2020, including coronavirus and the ransomware attack on city servers. Then incoming Mayor Luis Gonzalez moved to the center of the dais.

“I humbly accept the challenge of leading the great city of Marathon. This position is ceremonial, but it is my duty to do what is best, and as a council we will be better when we work together,” Gonzalez said. “Moving forward, I am counting on the citizens to participate and hold the city accountable and assist us in solving challenges that will arise. As a city, we can agree to disagree.

But with compromise always comes cooperation.

I look forward to working with each of you and I can’t wait for January 1st when we can leave 2020 behind.”

Marathon Councilman Mark Senmartin was named vice mayor.

The last item on the agenda at the Nov. 10 meeting was the discussion of George Garrett’s contract to become Marathon’s next city manager. Garrett was absent due to illness.

“It would be highly unusual to negotiate a contract without someone here to negotiate on their own behalf,” said city attorney Steve Williams. “We can either postpone the employment agreement, or suggest alterations of that contract even though he is not here to accept or reject or propose alternatives, or we can have another special call meeting at a later date.”

Councilmen Steve Cook and Dan Zieg jumped in with a proposal to name Garrett as interim city manager with outgoing City Manager Chuck Linsey continuing in his role, albeit virtually, until Garrett could resume his duties. That motion was shot down by the rest of the council.

Instead, Senmartin suggested alterations to the contract. For the portion of the contract that “encourages” Garrett to become a credentialed city manager, he suggested “requires as possible.” He also suggested that any changes to severance pay outlined in the contract currently would need to pass with a supermajority council vote.

The original contract called for Garrett’s duties to include both city manager as well as planning director (his current title), and a proviso that either the city or Garrett could opt out and Garrett could return to just his duties as planning director. Councilman John Bartus, who suggested that clause, seconded an amendment to the employment contract where Garrett would remain as planning director until a replacement can be found.

Williams said he would amend the contract and present it to Garrett for his signature. In the meantime, the council also voted 4-1, with Senmartin dissenting, to have Lindsey continue in his role remotely until Dec. 21 for continuity’s sake.

Garrett will earn $160,000 a year with 152 hours of vacation. If he becomes a credentialed city manager, he will receive a 5% pay raise. The first review is set for six months, and then 12 months, and then yearly thereafter. An above average evaluation would mean another 3% to 5% raise.

The contract spans three years, but the city manager serves at the pleasure of the council and can be terminated without cause. If that happens, the severance pay is 20 weeks of base pay. If the city manager breaks the contract, there is no severance pay.

Garrett could not be reached for comment as of presstime.

City manager choice an epiphany?

Kudos to the Marathon City Council for its recent decision to elevate George Garrett to City Manager.

George has served the City well for many years now as planning director and his experience will be vital as we move forward in these uncertain times. I am also hopeful that when it comes to hiring future City Managers we are now past the great experiment of “seeing what else is out there” and have learned that it is wise to give higher weight to local knowledge rather than cast out to the world for someone with a few more certifications or designations after their name. I have heard many, many times that we are a unique community. It would follow that we require someone with experience in that uniqueness to serve us rather than a naive newcomer with a smile and a story.

Last week a good and respected friend of mine, Frank Greenman, wrote a letter to this editor criticizing the council for being lazy in its process of choosing a new manager. Though I can agree with Frank to an extent on the council being lazy part, I prefer to believe that the majority of council rather had a bit of an epiphany when they chose to move forward with George Garrett.

I believe they recognized the value of having someone locally competent and with deep community roots at the helm. And I agree with them wholeheartedly.

As I think back over the history of the City of Marathon I recall that the best years Marathon (as a City) had were when native son, Mike Puto, was City Manager. Stuff got done … the ability to make a quick call and get a bit of help for the good of the town is invaluable.

Mike was the best at that. But with precious few alphabet characters after his name, the council at that time was looking for a more formal approach. In my opinion, that was a poor plan. Instead they established a precedent that has since had us

paying for searches, poring over resumes from candidates who in most cases don’t even know where Marathon is, and wasting valuable time and money which could be going to solving the myriad of problems, as so eloquently penned

by Mr. Greenman, facing our City.

To what end? Let me be blunt. It’s not rocket science to manage a city of 7,000 odd citizens. It doesn’t take an advanced degree, or an online certification, or a few semesters of management classes, or a few certification letters after your name.

What it does take is an understanding of the people and businesses in that community. It takes a working knowledge of the history of the community. It takes a commitment to the goals the community members establish as important to it. And finally, it takes the perseverance to take that community toward those goals. George Garrett has these qualities and I believe they are more valuable than any certification, degree or class.

The problems Mr. Greenman writes about all stem from a council not knowing, or not being clear about what it wants, not a deficiency in management. The council’s role is as a sounding board for the citizens. They take the wishes of the citizenry, fashion direction and policy, and task a manager to see those through. The role of the City Manager is to take the directions of the council, as a body, and implement them. Managers are implementers, not policy makers, and to that end they can only be successful if given proper direction.

I just don’t see how you make the jump from a lazy council, to not hiring someone who has been, and I believe will continue to be, a huge asset to our town.

As an aside, to the council members who voted against Mr. Garrett; rather than complain about process, I challenge you to clearly and transparently task him with your wishes. In the sunshine, of course.

andy and Amy Oleynik look as if they should be in sepia tones. One expects to see those antique, “high-wheel” bicycles — with the giant front tire — colored by the aged beige of photographic history.

Except the father-daughter pair aren’t confined to old photographs (although they take plenty of current ones). They’re actually on the move — in neon fitness fabrics and sunglasses made from modern-day materials — pedaling their antique contraptions from Michigan to Florida and coming soon to a Florida Key near you. The Oleyniks, with mom, Pam, following in a van, will arrive in Key West in the coming week, ending a cross-country ride that started a month or so ago in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

“I learned about this pair through my father, who’s a member of a high-wheeled bicycle club,” Key West teacher Destiny Montgomery told the Keys Weekly. Montgomery is organizing a “Key West welcome” for the trio that will end their journey at (where else?) the Southernmost Point. “We’ve gotten the local bicycle groups — Key West Mile Markers and Key West Bike Club — in Key West to meet them at the Triangle when they arrive in Key West, and ride with them to the Southernmost Point.” Key West hotelier Kate Miano is hosting them for the night at The Gardens Hotel. Montgomery will post their arrival date and time on Facebook and it’ll be on the Oleyniks’ blog as the details are finalized, according to weather.

“I think it’s such a fun story, and we could all use a little good news right now,” Montgomery said.

The Oleyniks aren’t raising money or awareness for anything. They’re just having a good time and getting a different perspective on the country, seeing it as they do from 52 inches above the road.

That’s right. Their front tires are more than four feet off the ground. Oh, and their bikes are 132 years old.

“My dad’s friends all ride modern-day highwheels that look like the old ones, but Randy’s and Amy’s bikes are the real deal, built in 1888,” said Montgomery. “Can you imagine trying to fix them and maintain them to keep them on the road?”

And it’s not as if those bikes were built with gel seats — or any sort of saddlebags. Hence,

The family clocks about 60 miles a day and stops in local motels and restaurants, posting their adventures on a hilarious blog Amy writes at highwheelride.wordpress.com.

This is the family’s second long-distance high-wheeled ride. The first was four years ago, from Boston to San Francisco, which took 53 days. This is “Season 2,” as Amy Oleynik writes.

“Season 2 will feature your favorite SAG mom, Pam, all new special guests, and the legendary ibuprofen count,” she says online. “What will the weather be like?

What song will Amy sing to annoy her dad? Who will we meet along the way? Will they stay 6 feet from us? (I have a stick that will make that answer a ‘yes.’) Stay tuned for the rest. Don’t worry, viewers, Amy and Randy will be taking all COVID precautions. We will have masks, sanitize our hotel room, wash hands often, and not lick doorknobs. The good thing about a cross country ride is that no one will be within 6 feet of us while we ride (face to face…. the cars, however….stay in your lane!) The fresh air and breeze will be with us as well. It is now under a contract to be a tailwind, so help me God.” The two are the first father-daughter team to cross the United States via high wheel, and Amy is the second woman ever to do so.

What’s a high-wheel bike?

Also known as penny-farthings, the highwheel was the first machine to be called a bicycle in the 1870s and 1880s.

The name “penny-farthing” “came from the British penny and farthing coins, the former being much larger than the latter, so that the side view resembles a larger penny leading a smaller farthing,” according to “Bicycle: the history” by David Herlihy. “Although the name ‘penny-farthing’ is now the most common, it was probably not used until the machines were nearly outdated,” Wikipedia states.

The rider could travel farther at higher speeds, as each rotation of the pedals moved the bicycle the circumference of the large front wheel.

Frenchman Eugène Meyer invented the high-wheeler in 1869, along with the wire-spoke tension wheel.

“It became obsolete from the late 1880s with the development of modern bicycles, which provided similar speed amplification via chain-driven gear trains and comfort through pneumatic tires, and were marketed in comparison to penny-farthings as ‘safety bicycles’ because of the reduced danger of falling and the reduced height to fall from,” writes highwheel historian Sheldon Brown.

“Although the trend was short-lived, the penny-farthing became a symbol of the late Victorian era. Its popularity also coincided with the birth of cycling as a sport,” Herlihy writes.

020 is the strangest year I’ve seen in a good long while. A coronavirus pandemic shut the world down and is threatening to come back for another round.

Murder hornets invaded the Pacific Northwest. The Pentagon released three videos that show UFOs. (Really.) Poland “accidentally” invaded the Czech Republic and briefly occupied territory there. Major wildfires happened in California and Colorado. The Louisiana coast was impacted by three hurricanes, while we just had a visit from Tropical Storm Eta. In November.

And let’s not forget Tiger King.

One can only wonder what’s next.

We’re going to take a look at some potential disasters and their odds of actually happening.

– Another Tropical Cyclone. At deadline, Theta had just been named a sub-tropical cyclone heading toward the Azores, and a new tropical wave was cruising through the Caribbean with a good chance of developing into a depression or storm. I wouldn’t bet against 2020 here.

– Major Florida Earthquake.

Although Florida has felt some small temblors, the odds of a major quake hitting the Sunshine State are thankfully as low as a …

– Giant Asteroid Strike. Scientists have calculated the chance of Earth being hit by a large asteroid, and they say one may likely hit us sometime in the next thousand years. While I am usually comfortable with a one-in-onethousand chance, not much about 2020 offers comfort. And is it just me, or do we seem to be hearing about a lot more near-misses and close calls from asteroids speeding by Earth?

– Wildfire. South Florida has seen its share of wildfires, both in the Everglades and closer to home on Big Pine Key. If there is any good news, it’s that the ground is so soaked from Eta’s passing that the risk of a large uncontrollable blaze before the end of the year is small. Flooded communities are much harder to ignite. Take that, 2020!

– Sharknado. As long as we’re talking about long shots (like a recordbreaking Atlantic hurricane season with no end in sight), we might as well consider the possibility of a Sharknado, however remote. Jet Propulsion Laboratory climatologist Bill Patzert said it would take a massive waterspout, like an EF-5 spinning at speeds of more than 250 mph, to generate the updraft needed to suck great whites out of the ocean and dump them on an unsus-

pecting community.

– Zombie Apocalypse. While society being overwhelmed by legions of zombies is unlikely, a bit of research turned up this nugget: On May 18, 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article, “Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse,” providing tips on preparing to survive a zombie invasion. While (hopefully) tongue in cheek, the article used the example of a zombie apocalypse to encourage preparation for any kind of disaster … including “hordes of ravenous braindevouring undead.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the good news from this week: Pfizer has a COVID-19 vaccine with a reported 90% success rate. Between a good vaccine or three, and better treatments for those who get the ‘rona, things may indeed get better in the New Year. And it will feel really good to put 2020 in hindsight.

We’re not gonna say who, but some.

“The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong” breaks on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 at Marathon High School Performing Arts Center. The seed for this latest hit from the Drama Club, directed by Carrollyn Cox, was planted three years ago.

“We saw this three years ago on a trip to New York City,” said senior Sara Gonzales. She plays the part of Annie in the character of the stage manager. (The real stage manager is Calla Jimenez).

“I don’t think I say anything until page 26 of the script,” Gonzales said. “I’m just doing random, crazy, silly stuff. I’ve never done a role like this and I’m enjoying it.”

Cox said the play re-enacts all the major and minor dramas that can happen in live theater: missed cues, small injuries, doors that open when they should be shut and doors that stay shut when they should be open.

“My favorite part is when the characters get stuck in a circle and say the same line five times because they can’t figure a way out of it,” Cox said. “It’s slapstick-y, not my usual genre, but it has given me great pleasure to go to rehearsal these last six weeks and just laugh.”

Even the play program is funny. Where normally the cast and crew would be formally pictured next to their short biography, in this one the photos are all “off-guard” — a blurry boy ducking out of frame, a girl digging out a bra strap. Cox credits assistant stage manager Chase Taylor with that bit of levity and says the cast and crew have even choreographed their own zany bows at the end of the show.

“I always start out with a vision, but really, they are the creative genius behind the productions. I’m just there to facilitate,” Cox said.

Patrick Daniher plays “Dennis,” who plays the character of Perkins, a butler. He said the show’s entertainment doesn’t stop.

“At the end of the show I get handcuffed to a couch and for the rest of it, I am carrying that couch around,” he said, “because another actor lost the key.”

Due to COVID-19, the drama club made many changes in how it rehearses and how it will present the show (see box). Cox said the mask requirement for actors won’t impact the audience’s appreciation.

“The actors had to be overly expressive. They have to use their body and eyes and their voice to portray emotions. It’s better, in a way,” she said. “And, if anything goes wrong, I doubt our audience will be able to tell because that’s what the whole play is about.”

“The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong” was penned by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields.

It was first presented by Mischief Theatre under the title of “The Murder Before Christmas” in London.

MALENA ROCKAFORT Sophomore Girls weightlifting What do you enjoy about being on the weightlifting team? I’ve made a lot of new friends, while gaining confidence through my strength.

My team is the best part, though, because they always believe in me.

How long have you been on the team? This is my first year on the weightlifting team. A bunch of my friends recommended I join, and I’m so glad that I did. I definitely will continue to lift until my senior year.

Describe one of your best moments in athletics. My first meet was incredible! Every week in practice I get better through my hard work. Last meet I went up by 10 pounds, and was so proud. I am super excited to continue progressing.

Coach Schubert says … "Add more weight, you can do it.”

It’s easy to not want to add additional weight, because you’re afraid to mess up. Schubert is sure to continue to encourage me, and the whole team to perform the best we can. So when he says these words I get that extra boost I need to add the extra weight.

or 18 years, Marathon High school’s athletic trainer, Luis Leal, has dedicated his time and talent toward helping injured athletes recover, stay healthy, and get back in the game.

“I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent watching kids grow into adults and successful athletes, and the bonds I’ve made with them in the process,” Leal said.

“You feel a sense of pride when you see your students grow and become something great.”

Growing up as an athlete, Leal says he felt sports would alway be a part of his life. Then, while playing college baseball, Leal suffered a shoulder injury. That meant hours rehabilitating in the training room.

There, he said he really connected his love of sports and his interest in the medical aspect.

“I spent a lot of the rehab process with the head trainer, Alan Maynard, and I would ask a ton of questions. He suggested I join the program, to see if I would like it,” Leal said.

Leal said he thinks of himself as a jack of all trades. He works hand-in-hand with doctors and physical therapists to help injured athletes recover to the strongest version of themselves. In an emergency, he’s trained to stabilize athletes with a brace, cast and more.

Then the real work begins. Leal said he assures every injured student athlete that he is there from start to finish to develop exercises and set goals to get individuals back out on the court or field.

Baseball player Ben Hiller recalls a time from his freshman year when Leal helped him after an injury on the field.

“He made sure I was the healthiest I could be before sending me back to play in the game. I had been worried about letting my team down, but he helped me realize that I would be letting the team down even more if I was injured for even longer,” Hiller said.

Leal said the hardest part of the job is helping young adults deal with the mental aspect of injury and recovery. “It’s getting them to fight the depression of feeling hurt and weak,” he said. “You just have to stay positive with them, and encourage these kids through every step of getting better.”

Marathon students know: no one can help an athlete like another athlete.

I’M 50. NOW WHAT?

W

e all know what happens when we turn 50, at least at DR. JOHN your providWOLTZ er’s office … annual labs … is a preventative health physistart, mammograms (if cian with Baptist Health Primary not already Care in Marathon. at 40), and the one conversation that so many dread, colon cancer screening.

When should these preventive services start? Are there differences by gender, BMI, lifestyle choices? Who makes these recommendations?

Let’s answer the last question first. The folks in charge of this have a long name — it’s the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, or USPSTF for short. The group is made up of 16 volunteer experts in the fields of preventive medicine and primary care including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, behavioral health, obstetrics/gynecology, and nursing. Most of the task force members are practicing clinicians. They use their own experience and receive input from topic experts and the public to come up with the recommendations.

The USPSTF’s list below applies to everyone — both men and women of all ages.

— Hepatitis B screening in high risk individuals: Any age — Asymptomatic latent tuberculosis in increased risk: Any age — Syphilis infection screen in increased risk: Any age — Weight loss in obese (BMI > 30): 18+ — Unhealthy alcohol use screen: 18+ — Unhealthy drug use screening: 18+ — Tobacco smoking cessation in adults: 18+

— High blood pressure screening: 18+ — HIV screening: 18-65 — Hepatitis C screening: 18-79 — Blood glucose screening in overweight or obese: 40 to 70 — Statin use in adults with higher risk: 40-75 — Low dose aspirin in adults with >10% 10 year CVD risk: 50-59 — Colorectal cancer screening: 50-75 — Lung cancer screening with history of smoking: 55-80 — Fall prevention screening: 65+ Do these apply to everyone? No, many of these have an algorithm that you and your doctor or medical provider can go through to see if you should follow the recommendation.

For example, in order for your medical doctor to suggest the use of statins, a patient must be between the ages of 40 and 75, have one or more coronary vascular disease risk factors (dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension or smoking) and have more than a 10% risk of suffering a coronary disease “event.”

So, to answer whether or not you should be on a statin, your provider will need a lipid and glucose test, blood pressure measurement and your medication list — at which point he or she can determine the second criteria and calculate the third criteria.

This is not an all inclusive list; some specialty groups’ recommendations may be slightly different than the USPSTF’s. That is okay. You should discuss this with your provider and find out the best schedule for you. You may have family history or other factors that modify these recommendations. This list is also for adults only; if you have children, your pediatrician will discuss what recommendations apply to them.

eys Energy Services recently donated 2,400 backpacks to the Monroe County School District. The backpacks will be used countywide to help tackle the issue of food insecurity with students and their families.

“These are bags we would normally have given out at community events,” said Keys Energy spokesperson Julio Torrado. “Since many of these events were canceled due to the pandemic, we thought this was a great way to use them. Food insecurity in our community should be something we are all concerned about,” he said.

Due to the pandemic, the USDA recently extended its waiver program that provides for free meals to students, through the end of the 2020-21 school year. The waiver program also allows for more flexibility in when meals are provided, to make sure students have enough food during times they may not be in school.

The backpacks donated by Keys Energy Services will be used to help provide breakfasts and lunches to all students who need them to help bridge the gap over the Thanksgiving recess as well as on weekends and other holiday breaks.

Teachers, counselors, so-

cial workers and principals were all asked to keep an eye out for students who show signs of food insecurity. More than 400 Keys students deal with food insecurity every day, recent studies have shown. Through the support of Keys Energy, in partnership with the school district, the City of Key West and other organizations, meals will be distributed to students to help bridge the gap when they are outside of school.

“We will be sending food home with these students over Thanksgiving break,” said Superintendent Theresa Axford. “Starting the week before, over several days, each student will bring home backpacks with the equivalent of 18 meals each to make sure they have something to eat for the entire break period.

“Thank you to Keys Energy Services for this generous donation. The USDA waiver gave us the ability to provide food, but we had nothing for the kids to carry the food home in and they really came through for us,” she added.

Parents of students who are facing food insecurity can contact their child’s individual school to ensure they will be included in this program.

ilitary service members have no illusions about their profession. Those who volunteer commit their lives to defending the Constitution and the rights of their fellow Americans. Against tremendous odds they prepare themselves to make the ultimate sacrifice by pushing their minds and bodies to the limit.

After picking up “The Green Berets” at a school book fair, 10 year old Chris Hoguet “made it in his mind” he would serve in the United States Armed forces.

Little did he know then of the punishment his body would endure as he made his way through the Army’s special forces before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonelin 2014.

“Jumping out of airplane moving 120 knots has an impact on your back,” Hoguet said. “There is a cumulative effect.”

Upon earning his degree in telecommunications from Penn State, Hoguet graduated from Ranger School before volunteering for Special Forces with 400 other candidates. During the selection process, he sprained his ankle and broke his foot and could barely stand on selection day when he and 40 other candidates finished their final event.

“I went from the showers to the medical station,” he stated.

His career took him to the Special Forces Combat Diver Qualification Course in Key West – a school he would run some six years later as a Major. Attachments with the SEALs and deployments to Puerto Rico, Afghanistan, Korea, Bolivia, Columbia and Iraq kept Hoguet from slowing down.

“I was not the smartest person in the world while doing things physically. There was extensive overuse,” he says. “It’s not the type of career where you stop doing things – you keep pushing.”

His hips and back were wrecked upon retirement. The discs in his back were herniated, bulging and compressed.

“The doctors told me to stop and I didn’t want to stop,” Hoguet added. “I wanted to keep doing what I was doing and I didn’t want to take meds.”

The pain eventually led him to an acupuncturist, who recommended a fitness method called Pilates, named for the founder of the discipline that uses controlled movements to increase flexibility and strength without subjecting the joints to extreme force.

By his third class, Hoguet felt his lower back “open up.”

“Instead of feeling tight and painful my body doesn’t hurt,” he said.

“I now have more range of motion, particularly my joints and spine.”

Today, Hoguet’s flat-top remains – and so does his affinity to push his body through advanced training. Earlier this year he completed 1,000 hours to become a certified Pilates instructor and spends about 5 to 7 hours a day at the Pilates in Paradise Studio in Tavernier.

He admits Pilates has changed his life in more ways than one. He can carry his infirmed dog up and down the stairs of his Upper Keys home and is reconnecting with his military background by offering five free sessions for any military vet suffering from the ravages of their service.

U

nama’ki, a 15-foot, 2,076-pound adult female great white shark, is the latest "snowbird" visiting the Florida Keys. She “pinged” off Key Largo during early morning of Nov. 5, setting off excitement for environmentalists and shark enthusiasts.

Nonprofit shark research group Ocearch fitted Unama’ki with an electronic tracking device in September 2019. Scientists from the nonprofit confirmed that she was indeed visiting Florida. She was northeast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean last week and pinged off Vero Beach on Nov. 8. In early August, Ocearch scientists tracked her off Nova Scotia, showing just how far the shark has migrated since.

Similar to what she did last year, scientists expect her to circle the Keys and move into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ocearch is tracking Unama’ki – whose name means “Land of the fog” in the language of the indigenous peoples of Nova Scotia – along with two other large great whites, in hopes of learning where the massive predators give birth and exposing a new great white shark nursery.

Unama’ki is one of the largest sharks Ocearch has tagged in the North Atlantic Ocean, beaten only by a 16-foot female tagged in 2012.

Children’s art park takes shape After six years as an idea, a children’s art park is starting to come together in Marathon.

With cooperation from the state and the city, a vacant overgrown lot is slowly turning into a space for the community to enjoy. Lori Gaukel, owner of Shady Palm Art Gallery in Marathon, is sprucing up the lot adjacent to her gallery and next to the entrance to the Marathon Government Center.

Using a newly purchased push mower, and with contributions from Sunbelt Rentals (a chipper) and Paradise Towing (that volunteered to move two donated Manatee statues), Gaukel said her vision is to create a park that emphasizes children’s imagination.

Marathon artist completes mural David Knickerbocker is an “artist-in-residence” at Porky’s Bayside Restaurant in Marathon. He recently spent three weeks airbrushing manatees on a shipping container near the restaurant on the west side of Marathon. “It’s a long process. I start by drawing it small. Then, at night, I set up a projector and trace the image.

Plus, there’s time planning out how much paint I need and things like that,” Knickerbocker said. That’s just his most recent and visible work. All over the restaurant, there are murals and stand-alone paintings.

Even the tables have his touch.

He has a small gallery on display at the restaurant with prints selling for as little as $4 each. He also accepts commissions. For more information, look up his Facebook page by searching “David Knickerbocker in Marathon.”
