icture this: Tropical Storm Eta’s track is like a backward “s” — it leaves Honduras, crosses over Cuba and heads toward Florida.

First it will move northeast and then it’s going to take a sweeping turn to the west.

“We don’t know when that turn takes place,” said Jon Rizzo, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Key West. He said if the turn happens when the majority of the storm is to the west of the Keys, it will be a relatively brief storm over the island chain. If the turn happens when the storm is to the east of the Keys, residents will have hours of heavy weather and more rainfall.

Rizzo said it’s unlikely that Tropical Storm Eta will reform with a defined core. “It’s going to be a sloppy, large, messy system. That means rather than sustained wind and rain, we might have squalls of rain and gusts of wind for localized wind damage, even the possibility of a tornado,” Rizzo

said. Because of the unformed nature of the storm, Rizzo warns that the heaviest weather may not be located near its center.

In preparation, locals should secure loose objects in the yard and on decks. That includes Halloween decorations and campaign signs. Tropical force winds (39 to 73 mph) could arrive as early as late Saturday night, but most likely around dawn on Sunday morning.

The Weather Service is predicting between 5 and 12 inches of rainfall, and coastal flooding of up to a foot on the oceanside of the Keys.

Tropical Storm Eta is the 28th named storm in the Atlantic this season, tying the record for the number of named storms in a single season, set back in 2005. Eta jumped from a tropical storm to a category 4 in about 24 hours before landing on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua and hooking over Honduras and back into the ocean.

CREWS COMMENCE UNDERGROUND WORK

The Florida Keys Electric Cooperative recently started work to move underground facilities to accommodate the pedestrian bridge at Founders Park.

Crews have been working between U.S. 1 and Old Highway near the park to relocate underground ductwork and a conductor off of the Florida Department of Transportation’s right-of-way onto village property. Above-ground stainless enclosures will be required at each end of the project. Estimated costs are between $700,000 and $800,000. Crews were also spotted relocating overhead utilities that are currently in the way of the $4.68-million pedestrian bridge. CARES Act Business Assistance grant program is now closed The second round of the Monroe County CARES Act Business Assistance Program is now closed to accepting applications for funding. The program was created with CARES Act funding to assist Monroe County businesses who were negatively impacted by COVID-19.

The CARES Business Assistance Program consisted of a one-time fixed amount grant to qualifying Monroe County-based small businesses with up to 25 employees. The program application period opened on Friday, Oct. 30 with $1 million to allocate. More than 350 applications were received.

Fully completed applications received will be processed for grants until the $1 million allocation is exhausted. Grants will be made on a first-eligible, first-served basis.

Grants awarded for Irma repairs U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, recently announced over $19.4 million in federal grants for long-needed repairs resulting from Hurricane Irma.

Recipients include Florida Keys Electric Cooperative, Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and Marathon Airport.

“I’ve been communicating with FEMA to get these funds to the Keys since I took office, and seeing such a large chunk of the owed reimbursements going to our community is such a relief,” said Mucarsel-Powell. The grant announcement includes: — $11,105,629.07 for the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative; — $7,225,885.50 for the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority to install four 1MW generators at the Stock Island Reverse Osmosis Facility, located at 7000 Front Street in Stock Island, to provide emergency power to the facility during a storm event. This will allow continuous service of potable water to residents, hospitals, and other emergency facilities within the Lower Florida Keys; and — $1,126,203.26 for Monroe County for repairs at Marathon Airport.

Transportation master plan virtual public outreach meeting Monroe County is preparing a transportation master plan that will provide direction for U.S. 1 within Monroe County. Due to technical issues during the first public outreach meeting in September, an additional meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. via Zoom webinar. The goal of this meeting is to gain input and feedback from locals and visitors.

The objective of the study is to identify transportation needs, develop goals and objectives, and develop an action plan to meet those goals. The action plan will identify potential shortterm solutions (1-5 years), mid-term (6-10 years) and long-term solutions (10-20 years). These solutions may include road, signal, sign and marking improvements to address traffic issues and/or solutions addressing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit.

If you would like to provide feedback or learn more about the plan, project information is at www.us1masterplan.com. You will find progress on each phase, a public survey and an interactive map where you can pinpoint areas of concern. Monroe County encourages those interested to provide

feedback on traffic issues (congestion, safety, signals, pedestrian, bicycle, etc.) and possible solutions. If you provided feedback at the first public meeting, you are welcome to provide additional input.

Key Largo Park baseball fields closed Both baseball fields located at Key Largo Community Park, 500 St. Croix Place, will be closed through mid-December while Monroe County Facilities Maintenance refurbishes the fields and replaces the sod. The county will provide a reopening date when the work is completed and the sod is established on the fields. The intention is to have both ballfields reopened

by January so there are no delays to the beginning of T-ball and baseball season.

Who is your all-time favorite teacher and why? Ms. Dobson, because she knows how to make a student want to come to school. She is always supportive and caring, and she makes her class fun and active every day. She truly cares about us.

What does “a good education” mean to you? A good education to me is when you can learn without even knowing it because you are having fun and you are enjoying it.

What is the dumbest rule at your school? The best? The dumbest rule at my school is that we cannot eat lunch standing up. The best rule is that they keep us safe and make us stay 6 feet apart, which is why we can’t stand up while we eat, but I still don’t like that rule.

What is something you know now that you did not know when you were a freshman? You can graduate without community service hours.

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores and why are they important to you? I am involved with basketball as well as track and field. They are important to me because they allowed me to make new friendships with other students and teachers, and they gave me another reason to keep my grades up.

What are your plans after high school? After I graduate I plan to join the Air Force.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I want to be remembered as a nice friend, a good student and the record holder for some events in track. I would like to hold the long jump, triple jump and high jump records. I am very close!

What is one favorite way to spend your spare time? I enjoy spending my time playing video games with my friends or playing basketball.

Will you make the Keys your permanent home? Why or why not? I plan to move out of the Keys because I have already been here for most of my life, and I want to try something new and travel.

Mote Marine Laboratory scientist discusses recent activity

A

n expert in coral reproduction will discuss science’s role in successful restoration of the reef, as the next presentation by the Keys History & Discovery Center.

Hanna Koch of Mote Marine Laboratory will present “(Coral) Baby Boom: Sexual Reproduction’s Role in Reef Restoration,” a virtual lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Coral reproduction is failing in the wild and scientists have taken over the process to ensure successful restoration of the next generation of coral on the reef.

Koch, a coral reproduction scientist and postdoctoral research fellow, will take attendees through the complexity of coral reproduction with an overview of the 2020 coral spawning season, which resulted in breakthrough discoveries and new hope for the future of the reefs.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF THE UPPER KEYS PREPARES FOR GIVING TUESDAY

H

abitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys (HFHUK) joins the global Giving Tuesday movement. The first Tuesday of December every year, nonprofits, small businesses, corporations, schools, and faithbased organizations all over the world celebrate a global day of giving, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

HFHUK has been building affordable housing in Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada for over 30 years. The local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International recently undertook their biggest project, the construction of a 16-unit condominium complex on Windley Key. This undertaking, in partnership with Monroe County and the Village of Islamorada, will give 16 families a place to call home by the end of 2020. The completion of the $3.8 million project of 16 twostory townhomes has been somewhat delayed by COVID-19.

The organization is seeking support through Giving Tuesday for this project along with an upcoming $1.2 million project of four homes on Plantation Key. “We need support now more than ever,” said Lindsay Fast, executive director. “Coronavirus has made it difficult to raise money, since we depend so much on in-person events.

Our financial challenges were further exacerbated by the fact that the state had appropriated $1 million for the Windley Key project but had to veto it at the last minute as part of its COVID-19 budget reduction.”

HFHUK recently wrapped up its first fundraising event since the COVID-19 pandemic, a quarantine relief golf tournament which raised over $20,000.

“The event was great, and we appreciate all of the supporters of the event, but we can’t stop there.” said Fast.

HFHUK hopes to raise $5,000 on Giving Tuesday, to go directly to its construction fund. More information is at habitatupperkeys.org.

Key Largo Boat Parade set for Dec. 12 In their illuminated boats, pirates are set to invade and entertain spectators from Key Largo’s Blackwater Sound. The 2020 Key Largo Boat Parade returns for another year, and it’s set to bring excitement and shimmering color that will light up the nighttime waters.

The Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club will put on the holiday boat parade for the second year in a row. Set for Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m., the theme of this year’s parade is Pirates of the Keys.

Illuminated boats ranging up to 55 feet, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats and other vessels will traverse the waters of Blackwater Sound for this annual holiday tradition.

A committee of Key Largo Sunset Rotarians had a kickoff meeting on Sept. 21. Sponsors and boat participants are being sought for this year’s event.

The parade is taking into consideration the coronavirus pandemic and taking appropriate measures. There will be no inperson pre-event captains meeting. Instead, the meeting will be conducted virtually.

The best public viewing locations for the parade include the Marriott Resort, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, The Caribbean Club and Sundowners Restaurant. Venues will be responsible for social distancing and other measures to keep the public safe.

The parade is a fundraiser for the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club Foundation, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to identify and support the needs of the elderly through service projects that create lasting, positive changes. The club received its charter in July 2019 and currently has just over 35 members.

FRIENDS OPEN NEW WINE BAR IN ISLAMORADA T

wo friends who left their jobs to own and operate a wine bar are giving patrons an experience unlike anywhere else.

The two avid wine drinkers in Morgan Beaton and Andrew McGrotha recently opened the doors to the new Islamorada Wine Co. at the former Sea Grapes, located at MM 80.9 in Islamorada. From reds to rosés to whites, around 50 different bottle selections currently line the shelves. And more will be on the way, as Beaton said they’re looking to have 100 different labels by year’s end.

Add in the charcuterie boards, sandwiches and Sunday brunches, and Islamorada Wine Co. is quickly becoming a favorite spot for those eyeing a happy hour glass of wine, celebrating a special occasion or just out enjoying an evening with friends.

“Upscale relaxed is what we’ve been calling it,” said Beaton. “You can get dressed up, but you can also come in your shorts and T-shirt.”

Running a wine bar all originated from a vacation the two friends took to the Virgin Islands, said McGrotha, who moved to the Keys four years ago to run Mile Marker 88 in Islamorada where he served as general manager.

“We kind of randomly got paired up to share a cabin and we became fast friends,” he said. “We knew each

other a little bit before. But on that trip, we started dreaming of owning a little bar.

“We joked about it for a good eight months to a year,” he continued.

“When this place became available, Morgan heard about it and approached me.”

Beaton spent many years in the restaurant business, having opened Shrimp Shack with her mother, Jill, some nine years ago. Beaton said she knew the previous owners at Sea Grapes pretty well and jumped on the opportunity when it went up for sale.

“The previous owners offered it to me first and here we are,” she said. “I talked him (Andrew) into it really bad.

We both have been talking about looking for something smaller, a little less pressure and stressful than what we’ve been dealing with for the last several years.”

Once the papers were signed, the two started in on the work of rebranding and preparing the wine bar for patrons. With design changes to the inside also came a bigger food menu that features appetizers, charcuterie boards and fresh salads. They opened on Oct. 10.

Beaton and McGrotha say the charcuterie has been the main hit.

It comes with the choices of double creme brie, italian dry salami, balsamic onion parmesan and aged manchego, to name a few.

“We have things you can’t find around town like truffle pecorino, black truffle salami,” McGrotha said.

“We just recently introduced a dessert board which was a huge hit. It has a little cheesecake, nutella, honey goat cheese, berries and breads and pretzels to dip into fun stuff.”

Patrons can make a meal out of their experience if meat and cheese isn’t their thing, by ordering a roast beef or an apple brie panini and appetizers like prosciutto-wrapped dates stuffed with honey goat cheese.

Beaton and McGrotha are also working to begin a wine member club.

“We will have a membership program where you can do wine tastings or wine and cheese pairings. People can pre-order cases of wine from the events and take advantage of discounts,” McGrotha said.

As for the wine selection, Beaton

said they’re aiming to bring the “heavy hitters,” as well as those elevated bottles that people can’t get anywhere else.

“We’ve been having to put our personal preferences aside, and everything we order are big delicious cabs and zinfandels and all these awesome wines,” said Beaton, who noted her love for red wine. Even though they are avid wine drinkers, “it’s cool because we’re learning so much more about different products.”

Beaton and McGrotha say their wine bar, which can house 19 patrons inside and seven outside, has stayed busy since opening, between the locals who’ve returned and the out of towners who’ve found them on Facebook and Google. Beaton said even fishermen have stopped by to try some fine wines.

“They come in and support us and they drink stuff we never imagined someone drinking,” she said. “It’s hilarious and awesome getting people in wine culture that you would really not expect. Everybody’s happy when they’re drinking good wine.”

MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF Many residents may have noticed an increase on the Sheriff’s Office social media pages as well as reports in the press of mandatory notice to appear citations being given to anglers with over-the-limit or undersized fish or lobster.

This isn’t a coincidence. Deputies have been going after these violators at my instruction and with the help of our partners with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and State Attorney’s Office.

We are seeing more and more visitors return to the Keys and that includes anglers on the fishing bridges along U.S. 1.

Unfortunately, my agency is also seeing too many anglers — mostly from mainland Florida — who believe they can fish here while ignoring wildlife laws.

The Sheriff’s Office has been citing people far too often lately who either claim ignorance of the law or chose to casually break it.

The good news: We have made many good cases in recent months and continue to do so. I want everyone in this community and to those who visit us to know that this behavior will never be tolerated while I am Sheriff.

Help me spread the word.

If you are in possession of too many or undersized fish, you can expect to be given a citation that makes your appearance in court mandatory. Additionally, you will face the appropriate fines.

Some people may say most of these incidents are minor violations and no big deal. I disagree. These resource violations when viewed in total have a large impact on the fishery and future generations’ ability to enjoy it.

I continue to ask for the public’s help in curbing this activity.

Four times a year, Lew Bellows changes the flag on the wreck of the USCGC Duane, which sits 100 to 130 feet underwater.

hen longtime diver Lew Bellows moved to Port Largo nine years ago, he began diving the Keys working for Ocean Divers (now Rainbow Reef Dive Center). It bothered him that the U.S. flags on the famous shipwrecks were tattered, and he decided to do something about it.

“Someone told me the guy who used to take care of it had moved away, so I took it upon myself to do it, and I enjoy doing it,” he said.

Bellows has changed the flags on Key Largo’s two most famous shipwrecks and dive sites, the USS Spiegel Grove and the USCGC Duane, ever since.

“I came out of the Vietnam era,” Bellows told Keys Weekly. “Didn’t volunteer, didn’t get drafted. Just wandered through. But I had friends of mine that went and never came back, and I had friends who went and didn’t completely come back.”

Those memories prompt Bellows to refresh the flags about four times a year to ensure there’s always a crisp, clean flag “flying” on both military wrecks.

“I like to get clean flags up for Veterans Day and Memorial Day, at least. That’s the reason I do it, really,” Bellows said. “The algae gets going really fast, and it doesn’t really matter if it’s polyester or nylon, the algae always gets it,” Bellows said.

The Duane sits in 100 to 130 feet of water and is Bellows’ favorite place to dive in the Keys.

The second-longest serving military ship in history, it was also a U.S. Coast Guard ship during the Vietnam War. In the 33 years since its intentional

sinking, it’s become an artificial reef, teeming with soft corals, bull sharks, goliath groupers and tons of fish, he said.

The Spiegel’s crane arms have some of the prettiest soft corals and sponges in all of the Caribbean, Bellows continued. The Navy ship was intentionally sunk into 60 to 135 feet of water in 2002.

Bellows loves seeing the flags on both. When the current catches them, they’re “as pretty as seeing a flag in the breeze” above the surface, he said.

He hopes the flags serve as unifying symbols especially in this time of “struggle.” He also emphasizes that he is proud to complete the changes for many reasons, none of which is political.

“I don’t think about pride for myself. I feel pride for the United States,” Bellows said. “I realize there’s a whole lot of neat people who gave their lives and served so that I can be a bitchy liberal. All my right-wing friends know exactly what I am; we still agree 100% on the flag.”

The actual changing of the flags is a oneman job, but Bellows takes coworkers from Rainbow Reef as dive buddies and “trainees” of sorts. He attaches the flags with plastic zip-ties and collects all the old ones to prevent plastic pollution. The currents on both ships are notorious, and the deep dives mean that he has to work efficiently.

“When I go down there, I say a prayer of some sort to those who gave their lives,” he said.

“There’s nothing to interfere — just me, the flag and the pole.”

Over nine years, he’s amassed fun stories like learning the hard way not to straddle the flagpole without a wetsuit (fire coral, ouch!) and befriending a curious golden grouper on the Duane.

“For years, he’d chase the other fish away and just watch me change the flag. It was the Lew Bellows coolest thing. Then he disappeared. Probably onto someone’s dinner plate,” Bellows chuckled.

Bellows absorbs the cost of the flags himself and is honored to do so. The newest flags, which were changed within the past month, cost around $40 each.

The old flags are ceremoniously retired either at an American Legion or the Boy Scouts Base Camp and then usually incinerated.

After nine years, Bellows is ready to pass on the duty to Rainbow Reef, where he still works.

He predicts Memorial Day 2021 will be the last flag change where he’s in charge.

“Thanks to Rainbow Reef for allowing me to have the honor of changing those flags,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of it. And I’m sure someone will carry on well after me.”

heriff Rick Ramsay announced changes at command levels in the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys as the agency says farewell to some long-standing members due to retirement while welcoming new members up the chain of command.

“I am saddened to say goodbye to some of the hardest working law enforcement officers a sheriff could ask for,” said Ramsay. “But, at the same time, it’s always exciting to see those with that same commitment be rewarded for their hard work and rise up through the ranks. So, these announcements are bittersweet for many of us within the agency. I offer my sincere gratitude to those entering retirement and an equally loud congratulations to those moving up.”

The following members will be promoted by Ramsay on Monday, Nov. 16. Those retiring will do so at various dates in the weeks ahead.

• Lower Keys Commander Capt.

Donnie Catala is retiring after decades of service to Monroe County.

The native Key Wester has been with the sheriff’s office for more than 30 years. He has served a litany of roles, including as a Lower Keys general crimes detective and then sergeant over that unit as well as on the sheriff’s office SWAT Team.

• Executive Director Patricia Thompson will move in as the new Lower Keys commanding officer.

Thompson formerly supervised detectives with the Special Operation Unit and Major Crimes Division and as such oversaw the most important counter-narcotics and serious crimes investigations in the Keys. Thompson has a law enforcement career spanning decades, including time as a special agent with the FBI. Before retiring from the FBI, Thompson worked some of the biggest criminal federal cases in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Thompson retired from the FBI and later joined the sheriff’s office in 2018.

• Major Crimes Unit Detective Vince Weiner will move in as the new director of the Special Operations Unit and Major Crimes Division.

Weiner spent decades with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, many of those years as a supervisor in Monroe County, investigating serious crimes at the state level.

Weiner resigned from the FDLE as a regional agent in charge. He then

came on board at the sheriff’s office in 2012 as a road patrol deputy and eventually became a major crimes detective. He also served as school resources officer at Sugarloaf School, before going back to the Major Crimes Unit where he solved two longstanding cold murder cases.

• Islamorada Commander Capt. Corey Bryan and his wife, records assistant Peggy Bryan, will both soon be retiring after more than 30 years of service each with the sheriff’s office. Corey Bryan has been an active member of the Islamorada community as a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club.

The couple were usually spotted leading parades and public events at Founders Park. He took a leading role working with the village on everything from school safety to traffic concerns on the Old Highway to activity in the Indian Key Fills.

The Bryans have a son, Lt. Spenser Bryan, who continues to work for the sheriff’s office.

• Middle Keys Lt. Derek Paul is heading to the Village of Islamorada where he will serve as the new captain or commanding officer. Paul is a Marathon native and a 23-year member of the sheriff’s office who started work in the Bureau of Corrections at the main jail on Stock Island, before moving over to road patrol. He’s also served in the Upper Keys while on road patrol and it was there when he was last promoted before he returned to his home community.

• Soon-to-be promoted to lieutenant as second-in-command in the Middle Keys, Sgt. Mark Jones will take Paul’s spot in the Middle Keys.

Jones was born on mainland Florida and has 32 years of law enforcement experience, including time with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Jones worked as an undercover officer and also worked with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) task force, where he participated in some of the most notable drug interdictions in the Keys.

• Middle Keys Detective Leon Bourcier will be promoted to sergeant and fill Jones’ role in Middle Keys road patrol. Bourcier has been with the sheriff’s office since 2008 and has worked in Marathon in road patrol and as a general crimes detective. He has worked as a detective since 2016.

NEW PIER AT SEA BASE DEDICATED TO DOUGLASS’ 30 YEARS OF SERVICE

W

ith a big grin, Keith Douglass looks out at a newly-constructed concrete pier spanning 285 feet at the Florida Sea Base in Islamorada. In the years to come, thousands of scouts across the country will set foot on the pier — named after Douglass — as they hop on sailboats for an adventure in one of the most diverse ecosystems in America.

The facilities director of the high adventure program base for the past 11 years, Douglass couldn’t help but reflect on his 30 years of service and many memories as an executive with the Boy Scouts of America. Count his 10 years as a cub scout and boy scout, and Douglass has been a member of the Boy Scout family for 40 years.

Just recently, Douglass decided to call it a career. In celebrating his many years with Boy Scouts, a ceremony was held with friends and family at the Sea Base to officially unveil Douglass Pier. Of his 30 years with Boy Scouts, half was spent at the Florida Sea Base.

“I so much enjoyed working here and being a part of the Sea Base family,” he said. “I truly miss it already. I still come back and do some work as a consultant when they need me and as a volunteer.

“It truly is a family in my 40-some years with Boy Scouts,” he continued. “I still go back to people who served on my staff, facilities and program departments, and they still keep in touch with me. Some are married with children now. It’s just so neat.”

A Philadelphia native, Douglass first became involved with scouting in 1960 as a cub scout. He obtained the arrow of light award and ended up joining Paoli Troop 1 when he was 11 years old. Douglass earned the Eagle Scout rank in 1967 with a bronze and silver palm. He also earned the Ad Altare Dei Catholic scouting’s religious award.

Douglass earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and completed graduate work in the same discipline and is also a U.S. Navy veteran.

In his 30 years as an executive with Boy Scouts of America, Douglass served in various capacities as district executive, senior district executive, senior exploring executive and field director positions in the Chester County Council. In 1986, at age 34, he became the scout executive of the Sullivan Trail Council in Elmira, N.Y., where he served four years.

Awards were presented for the LLGF Fishing Fever tournament with a total of 180 fish caught and 101 released. Top offshore went to Jan Morris, of Rotunda West, who caught a 23.26-pound wahoo on the Sea Horse with Capt. Rick Rodriguez. Second-place offshore went to Noelle Goulart, of Belle Isle, for catching a 13.8-pound king mackerel on Blue Chip Too with Capt. Skip Bradeen.

Top inshore went to Goulart for reeling in a 30.5-inch snook on Ankle Deep Charters with Capt. Jeremy Mathis. Second-place inshore went to Anita Laico, of Singer Island, for catching a 31-inch snook on Capt. Chris Hanson’s Scales 2 Tales. The top party boat went to Vivian Villanueva, of Cooper City, on Captain Michael.

The fishing activities kicked off with a meet-and-greet social featuring networking, fundraisers and a master chef appetizer contest. First place went to Nancy Rudick, of Pompano Beach, for deviled eggs. Events continued with classroom presentations on offshore, bottom (Capt. Jeanne Towne) and inshore fishing. Skills such as releasing, conservation, knot tying, bait rigging, spin casting, fly casting, net casting, gaffing grapefruits and more were available for hands-on practice.

On the final day, participants embarked on a fishing adventure out of Whale Harbor Marina, followed by a fish fillet demonstration. Fish caught included sailfish, mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, yellowtail snapper, king mackerel, tarpon, snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, sharks and more. Friday was a bonus fishing day.

“It was the best day of my life,” said Jan Morris, a novice angler who was not expecting to win the top offshore prize.

an you imagine finally reopening your beloved restaurant business after seven years of struggle, only to be hit with a history-making pandemic? That’s exactly what happened to the team behind Calypso’s Seafood Grille in Tavernier.

But not only are they beating the odds of surviving the nationwide trend of small-business closures, they are thriving.

Calypso’s chef, Todd Lollis, said, “We want to thank everyone for supporting us. People would get takeout and leave us a $100 tip. It left tears in our eyes.”

Owner Bron White agreed. “I can’t believe how wonderful people treated us in the pandemic,” citing just one example last week of a customer leaving an $8 tip on a $15 check. The customer told White, “We have to keep our little guys going here.”

All the “little guys” who run businesses have had quite the odds to surmount in 2020. “As of Aug. 31, 163,735 total U.S. businesses on Yelp have closed since the beginning of the pandemic,” according to Yelp’s recent “Local Economic Impact Report.”

White attributed their loyal fan base to “quality food.” “My father’s a nutritionist. Eating a cheeseburger should not be a death warrant.”

White said she makes an effort to source exceptional products to create their dishes. in Key Largo at MM 99.5, at the flashing light by the Key Largo Fisheries, from 1995 to 2012.

“We were a hidden gem with water access,” said Lollis and White’s daughter, Shelby Lollis. “That restaurant was my childhood.”

Shelby pointed out that she handed out menus with her twin sister, Charly, at age 3, and worked all the way up to running fish fries. “Sunday was the day to jam out to Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix,” she recalled fondly, pointing out that both servers and customers were family.

And those long-time Calypso’s customers are ecstatic that the family is back, even if it is in a more intimate setting. The new restaurant is at MM 91.5, bayside, in a little strip mall with 28 seats rather than the old 130, and a 15-item blackboard menu rather than a five-page one. The small size and small staff — just the three of them — has actually helped with the reopening’s success by keeping overhead small. Just take a look at a recent Yelp review: “For those of us who were fans of the old Calypso's in Key Largo, this is the best news that has come out of quarantine! … The (she) crab soup is absolutely the very best in the whole universe!”

When the family lost the original Calypso’s, “It was devastating. One of the saddest moments of my life,” said Todd Lollis.

White remembered sadly, “We didn’t fit in with the plans of development of the basin, so they terminated the lease.” “They,” according to White, was the Chicago conglomerate that

was the money lender for Cay Clubs, a development company that was their last landlord.

After the closure, White tended the bar and kept her eyes open for the perfect location to reopen Calypso’s. The search was a challenge, as she had to wait for a restaurant to go out of business and/or a location that Monroe County would approve for permitting.

But finally, in January 2020, “We got the band back together,” said Todd Lollis with a huge smile. “We turned the ovens on and bam, they started coming. We were kicking butt off the bat.”

This past Saturday, which happened to be Halloween, Shelby was dressed as Minnie Mouse and took lunchtime orders at the takeout window at a steady clip, and cheerfully and efficiently served customers at the tables, all while cheering on her Liverpool Football Club game that was running over loudspeakers. Meanwhile, Todd Lollis was churning out tuna tacos at the grill while wearing huge Mickey Mouse ears. “I forced him,” Shelby said with a laugh.

In addition to the She Crab soup and the burgers, the tuna tacos are a fan favorite. Seafood is an area of expertise of Todd’s, and on that Saturday his specials included a hogfish reuben for $15.95, a lemon basil hogfish entrée for $23.95, and a Shogun tuna dish with wasabi peas and cream cheese for $20.75.

Shelby is the baker. She made her dark chocolate, caramel, and pecan cupcakes called Cobra Bites for the dessert special at $7 each, proudly noting how dense each cupcake was with gooey frosting goodness. “Yeah, baby,” she said, nodding her head.

Shelby and Todd were clearly having fun running the joint on Halloween, with Todd strolling out to share with customers his passion for Ray Charles in between making orders, and also emphatically making sure that dearly departed friend and former server Shellaine West got the credit for the idea to put tuna tacos on Calypso’s menu.

As always, the conversation turned back to the customers and staff being one big family. Shelby observed that dynamic contribution to the secret sauce behind their success: “It’s the love. Love always has to be there.”

A FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM In 2003, fresh from completing my degree at Florida State University, I moved to the Upper Keys to begin a job as aide to Representative Ken Sorensen that would indelibly shape my entire professional life to this point. After Ken termed out, Representative Ron Saunders, a Democrat, kept me on as his aide, despite my Republican affiliation. I served him even as he was Minority Leader, which I credit for my ability to understand and work with both sides of the aisle. From both men I learned the intricacies of helping our unique area in Tallahassee. We are too often forgotten in this southernmost district, and policies that may work well in other parts of the state may not be well-suited to our community and way of life. With this knowledge and experience, I was able to hit the ground running when you honored me with election as your state representative in 2012.

I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished for this district across my four terms in office, from sponsoring the state’s first agritourism legislation to the landmark Florida Keys Stewardship Act, to safeguarding our lobster and stone crab fisheries for future generations. This area generates a great deal of revenue for the state, so I was also laser-focused on bringing those dollars back home. I know that the hundreds of millions of dollars we secured for critical needs such as water quality, hurricane recovery and other major infrastructure projects had a big impact on our local governments and local communities.

The eight years I’ve spent in office have also been the first eight years of my son, Drake Thomas’s life. To Drake- I know that serving in this role has resulted in me missing so much – baseball games, fishing trips, movie nights – and that’s been hard for you to understand. But what drives me is the hope that when you scuba dive amongst our coral reefs in Pennekamp State Park, or fish off our dock in Key Largo – and when you do that with your own children decades from now, you will know that it was your mom that helped protect it for you and for them. The work I’ve done is because I love you. But there is nothing I have ever done and nothing I ever will do that is more important than being your mom.

To the amazing people who entrusted me with this role – the voters of district 120, and particularly of my adopted home, Monroe County. The contrasts between my childhood home of Alaska and the Keys could not be greater physically nor could they be further apart, but the people within could not be more similar – resilient people of strong character who love where they live and are at one with our natural environment. You have blessed me by allowing me not just to serve you, but to represent you in the truest sense of the word. To bring your values and priorities, goals and dreams to Tallahassee.

To each of you, I hope I have exceeded your expectations in serving this unique district.

A new representative will be sitting in the District 120 chair when the House organizational session convenes in just a few short weeks. To my successor, I offer some light-hearted words of advice. When in the Capitol, you will be sitting a lotmeetings in your office, committee meetings, and late-night floor sessions. Elevators can also be extremely difficult to come by, so if you are only going one or two floors, take the stairs! Also, walk fast, because not only does it help your body counteract the sitting, the lobbyists can’t keep up! But in all seriousness, you will face your fair share of difficult decisions, just try to keep the people of this district in the forefront of your mind, over everything and everyone else, and you will find your way.

Again, thank you all for the honor of serving you in the Florida House.
