The total number of Florida residents who have been tested for COVID-19, according to the health department’s Sept. 9 report. Of the total, 644,781 state residents have tested positive and 4,166,408 have tested negative, and 6,989 tests were deemed inconclusive. onroe County paid out $52,000 in overtime to 110 employees who worked for two days preparing for Tropical Storm Laura, which did not affect the Florida Keys.

“The full County Commission did not vote to authorize or implement the county’s new emergency response pay,” Commissioner Craig Cates told Keys Weekly on Sept. 9. “It was a decision made by the executive committee on the Friday before the storm approached (Aug. 21). By 5 p.m. that same Friday, the official forecast had moved the center of the storm away from the Keys, so we knew it wasn’t going to affect us, but we still paid more than 100 employees double time for working that Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 22 and 23). Normal work hours resumed on Monday (Aug. 24).

“They never should have implemented that pay plan so soon,” Cates said. “That was one of my arguments the last time this overtime was an issue, but here we are again. And considering what others in this county are going through right now, this is a slap in the face when so many people are suffering.”

The executive committee includes County Mayor Heather Carruthers, County Administrator Roman Gastesi, Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner, County Attorney Bob Shillinger, Fire Rescue Chief Jim Callahan and Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Cates said.

Weiner is the only executive committee member who received emergency response pay for Tropical Storm Laura, according to payroll records Keys Weekly requested and received from the county clerk’s office.

Weiner received $2,884 in doubletime pay for 24 hours, according to the payroll records.

“Why are some salaried workers getting overtime for doing their jobs?”

Cates said. Commissioner Michelle Coldiron disagreed with Cates, and said she supports the decision to implement the emergency pay plan, which gives employees time and a half for hours worked on emergency tasks during their usual 40-hour work week.

Any hours worked on emergency tasks above the usual 40 hours are paid double time.

"Storm preparation must be conducted in advance of a storm. Our crews had to go secure buildings and prep generators in the event Laura developed into a major storm,” Coldiron said. “At the same time, we are dealing with COVID, staff was working on preparing shelters as well as transportation for the special-needs community. It is the county’s responsibility to protect these assets. Thankfully the storm turned and the administrator was able to stop the emergency pay and call everyone back to work for normal operations."

Five county employees waived their emergency overtime pay: Carol Schreck waived $563; Bryan Cook waived $437; Sheryl Graham waived $124; Christine Hurley waived $326 and Kelly Cummings waived $262.

ey West has found a way to let the music play during the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

Rams Head, the company that manages events at Key West’s openair Coffee Butler Amphitheater, this week launches Sunset Series at the Amp. The eight-week outdoor concert series will begin Saturday, Oct. 3 featuring $10 tickets for live music performances, with socially distanced seating on the lawn. Attendees will bring their own chairs and blankets for an entertainment experience that includes local food vendors and artisans, with the Key West sunset as a natural backdrop.

Unlike traditional concerts at the amphitheater, there will be no seating in front of the stage. “This is just the beginning as we move forward in the events world and we hope many will benefit. This community-driven series is so needed on our island right now,� said Kelly Norman of Rams Head.

The opening night of the series on Oct. 3 will feature a performance by the amphitheater’s namesake, Lofton “Coffee� Butler, supported by a full band led

by Larry Baeder and including special guests Cliff Sawyer, Mina Lopez, Clayton Lopez and others. “This will be the first performance for the Key West icon, Coffee Butler, who’s now 92, on the dedicated stage. Kristen McNamara, a local favorite and former American Idol contestant, will perform an hour-long set at the start of the evening,� Norman said.

The series will continue every Saturday through Nov. 28 from 5 to 9 p.m., with performances by Coconut Victrola, The Happy Dog Band, Andy Westcott Band, The Raw Dawggs, Shastina Chiles, Nick Norman & Caffeine Carl, Rolando Rojas & the All Star Band and more. “We want live music to be a driving force of this series, while providing an atmosphere where, regardless of who is on stage, locals can get out of their house, see friends, do some shopping, eat, drink and feel safe,� Norman said.

Venue managers are taking extra steps to ensure the best and safest practices are being met when reopening. Online ticket sales through thekeywestamp.com will provide contactless entry and vendors are asked to minimize cash handling. Sanitation stations will be provided and socially distanced circles on the lawn will separate groups. Masks are required when moving about the venue and not eating or drinking.

City talks about Halloween holiday

“H

alloween is not a citysponsored event,” said Marathon Councilman Mark Senmartin at a meeting on Sept. 8. “There’s been some confusion about what’s allowed and what’s not allowed. This is a resident event that is put on by locals.”

Senmartin was addressing recent chatter on Facebook regarding whether the event in the neighborhood behind the airport would go on in 2020 due to worries about coronavirus.

“If they want to hand out candy to trick or treaters, they can. Of course, we urge anybody at any type of event where people are gathered in large numbers to wear a mask. That shouldn’t be a problem on Halloween.

Just don’t share the same Everlasting Gobstopper,” Senmartin said. He noted that the city’s only involvement in the annual event is to place trash cans in the neighborhood and clean up the following day. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has extra deputies patrolling the neighborhood to keep the peace, and usher out the guests at the evening’s close.

“Absolutely we will be there this year,” said Capt. Don Hiller, Marathon’s ranking officer.

Later in the meeting, the city approved use of Marathon Community Park for a drive-through Halloween event, hosted by the Zonta Club. Participants will snake through the park in a one-way directional car parade, collecting treats. It is intended to replace the event that usually occurs at the Gulfside Village shopping plaza where the youngest trick or treaters show off their costumes and collect candy.

The “Drive Up Halloween” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m.

“We are accepting requests for organizations or businesses to join the event,” said Zonta’s Charlotte Quinn.

Marathon’s parks and recreation department will begin offering in-person programming for youth on Monday, Sept. 14 — the same day Monroe County schools accept all students back on campus for in-person instruction. Parks and Recreation Director Paul Davis said the parks will follow the same CDC safety and sanitation rules as the schools.

In other news: • The city is going to partner with other local agencies to look for solutions to daytrippers camping on the state right-of-way on Grassy Key. “I caution the council about taking any responsibility,” said Marathon City Manager Chuck Lindsey, “because we all know what happened in Islamorada.” The Village of Islamorada subleased the state Department of Transportation’s right of way at the Fills and the Indian Key Boat Ramp earlier this year and reduced the public’s access. Islamorada projects it will spend $54,185 for public works personnel salary in 2020 and is considering the construction of a cable-barrier fence projected to cost $322,000.

• The Marathon High School homecoming parade is set for Thursday, Oct. 8. The American Cancer Society Making Strides Walk is set for Saturday, Oct. 24.

• The Marathon City Council approved the second reading for a site development change to Grassy Flats Resort and Beach Club and an additional 100 hotel rooms for Isla Bella Beach Resort. Councilman Luis Gonzalez asked for a clarification. “We don’t have a suitcase full of those hotel room building rights and hand them out, correct? Just so the public can understand.” City Planning Director George Garrett confirmed: “We don’t have any transient building rights to hand out. Those are acquired by the developer through existing hotels.

For example, they may acquire an old motel somewhere and maybe bulldoze it or convert it to affordable housing.”

• The City of Marathon handed out its twice-yearly allocation of new residential building rights — 8 general market building rights, 3 owneroccupied market building rights and 2 affordable building rights.

• A group of citizens spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting to protest planned construction on Mockingbird Lane. The opposition was adamant that an identified lot is too small to support two homes that have been approved by the city's planning department.

• Steve Williams was hired as the City of Marathon’s in-house attorney.

His base salary is $158,067.

THE LOWDOWN ON LODGING Coronavirus crushes hotel occupancy rates

H

otel occupancy has plummeted since the pandemic reached the Florida Keys in March, when the March 22 installation of a residents-only checkpoint closed the island chain to visitors until June 1.

Keys Weekly took a look at occupancy rates in hotels, guesthouses and vacation rentals, and spoke with some of the professionals on the front line — and at the front desks — of the critical lodging industry, which is also one of the Keys’ largest employers.

While the checkpoint closed the popular destination to all but those who live, work or own property here, hotels throughout the Keys saw a 92% drop in occupancy in April and an 87% decline in May, compared to the same months in 2019, according to figures compiled weekly by Smith Travel Research (STR) and evaluated extensively by officials at the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

In Key West, which has the largest number of hotel rooms and other short-term rentals in the county, occupancy dropped by 89% in April and 83% in May, also compared to those months in 2019.

The numbers rebounded slightly when the destination reopened to visitors on June 1, with a 34% Keyswide decline for June and a 30% drop in July.

The comparison to 2019 was a little bleaker in Key West, which saw a 42% drop in June and a 35% drop in July.

“This is certainly not sustainable in the long term,” said Jodi Weinhofer, president of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys & Key West. But, she added, there are some silver linings and saving graces.

“While we’re certainly not back to where we need to be, weekends are starting to look better, and remember, this is September, which is never amazing anyway,” Weinhofer said. “But it’s a big problem for a number of reasons: corporate travel is gone; the international travelers aren’t coming due to foreign travel bans; weddings aren’t happening, at least not the large ones that occupy an entire floor of hotel rooms; and all our events are canceled.

“We’ve worked very hard to become a year-round destination, but now we’re back to where we were decades ago, when Duval Street was desolate and many businesses closed for one to three months in the summertime,” she said.

But the Keys are also well positioned to recover, perhaps more quickly than other tourism destinations, such as Manhattan, for example.

“We’re not a crowded, urban destination,” she said. “The Keys have plenty of safe, outdoor activities and we’re accessible by car from a ton of other places. This fall will be a rough patch, but I do think there’s a huge pent-up demand to travel, and I think we’re well positioned for when that happens.”

Michael Knowles, general manager of Key West’s Doubletree Grand Key Resort, told the Key West City Commission last week that his occupancy “is down 42% in occupancy points. I was at 92% last August and am now at 51%.”

In the Upper Keys, occupancy rates for June were at 53.6% in Key Largo and 61.8% in Islamorada, which is down from 74.7% in both markets the year before. Bookings have picked up in the months following the checkpoint’s ending. Dan Martin, director of sales and marketing for the Islander Resort in Islamorada, said drive-to markets are feeding the resort. Overall, Martin said, the resort is doing well, with weekends full and weekdays staying fairly busy.

“No one can travel out to the Caribbean effectively. Cruises are still down. You’re not going to Europe or anywhere overseas. Mexico is still difficult,” he said. “Flying is iffy. They’re looking for that island experience.”

Despite what another Key West hotel general manager called “abysmal” occupancy, Weinhofer pointed out that the lodging industry — including both large hotels and smaller guesthouses — is a bit better positioned than many restaurants and retail shops.

“The good news for lodging properties is that the asset they own hasn’t changed. These are giant, valuable real estate assets,” Weinhofer said. “I feel like that’s where our industry has a bit of a leg up over retail and restaurants in which many of the business owners don’t own the properties that house their business.”

The biggest concern Weinhofer hears from lodging association members involves keeping their staff employed.

“Unlike in huge, high-rise hotels, these properties are like families, and our general managers know how difficult it is to find and keep good workers, so they’re doing everything they possibly can to keep their people employed,” she said.

RESTAURANTS CAN RETURN TO REGULAR HOURS

lorida Keys lawmakers voted Sept. 8 to allow restaurants to resume their normal hours of operation and allow a COVID-related curfew to lapse.

The curfew had forced restaurants to close and retail alcohol sales at stores to end at midnight — 11 p.m. during the two-day lobster mini-season in late July.

County Commissioners Michelle Coldiron, Craig Cates and David Rice voted to let the curfew lapse and allow restaurants to resume normal hours, while County Mayor Heather Carruthers and Commissioner Sylvia Murphy wanted to continue the early closures, saying it’s too soon to relax any restrictions, particularly with schools resuming in-person classes for some students.

Carruthers initially proposed leaving the curfew in place until the Oct. 21 meeting, but later wanted to revisit the issue sooner.

“I feel we’ve got to let our businesses, our restaurants get back to normal,” Coldiron said, with Cates’ agreement.

“Especially since we’re about to sit here at this budget hearing and tax these residents and business owners.”

Cates agreed.

“I urge you to please let these people operate their businesses,” Cates said. “Business is very slow, but every little bit helps.”

Rice acknowledged, “The truth is we just don’t know what’s going to happen,” but he advised the commission that they need to “be ready to pivot and change things quickly if the numbers or something changes.”

Carruthers said the Keys’ COVID numbers are on the decline, “But they’re going down because of the actions we’ve taken. I don’t believe now is the time to do this, and I’m not hearing from our public health officials that we should be doing this. Why take our foot off the gas now?”

When the commission ultimately voted 3-2 to allow normal hours, Murphy said, “Keep your fingers crossed, folks.”

ey West, a proud military town, lost one of its own when decorated U.S. Army Sgt. Roger Matamoros Chavarria, 27, died on Aug. 28 during a training exercise at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, Texas.

The Key West High School graduate had been stationed there since January 2019, according to the Army Times. He joined the Army in November 2012.

The Army Times reports that Chavarria was killed in a “military vehicle collision,” although details of the accident or training exercise remain under investigation and were unavailable.

Matamoros Chavarria was assigned to the 123rd Support Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, as a motor transport operator.

“The Iron Support Battalion is incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of Sgt. Matamoros Chavarria and we grieve with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Lt. Col. Gilberto Escobedo, the battalion commander, said in a prepared statement for Army Times.

Matamoros Chavarria’s awards during his years of service include the Combat Action Badge, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal and the Air Assault Badge.

Matamoros Chavarria’s girlfriend, Yani Morales, is still living in Key West, where the soldier had planned to return for a visit “when this corona clears up,” Chavarria told a friend on Facebook in the spring.

Morales posted the following tribute on Facebook on Sept. 2: “...We had such big plans for our life. We were planning for our wedding. We wanted our little family one day above anything else. ... I know you were humble, but I want the world to know what an AMAZING soldier you were. You took such pride in your work. You truly loved being a soldier. I saw how much joy it brought you and how much you loved your job. You made the ultimate sacrifice and gave your life for this country. This is hard for me. But you told me once before, ‘If something ever happens to me, I just want you to be proud.’ Just know, baby, I am so proud of all you accomplished. You will forever be the love of my life. I will miss you every single day. I am thankful for every moment I ever shared with you. You made me the happiest girl in the world. You showed me how much you loved me all the time. I wish I could just talk to you and kiss you and hold you again. Our love is forever.”

hallenges are across the board as 10 candidates vie for five seats on the dais in Islamorada, and one particular race welcomes two residents who have extensive familiarity with the village.

In the race for village council’s seat 3 are sixth-generation resident Joseph “Buddy” Pinder and former Monroe County sheriff’s captain of more than 20 years, Jenny Bell-Thomson. Pinder threw his name into the contest just before the Aug. 11 qualifying deadline, while Bell-Thomson acknowledged that she’d be running several months ago.

Both have retired from their successful careers and are ready to serve the public in a different capacity.

Pinder owned and managed a successful business and worked with government entities on projects over the years. He says the village is his heart, and he believes quality of life is important for the residents who enjoy weekends in the pristine waters on the boat with their families.

“Being retired means I can dedicate my time to being an advocate for the residents,” Pinder said. “As a former local business owner, I know there are many challenging issues the village will face in the near future that

will affect our residents, families and businesses.”

Bell-Thomson served with the sheriff’s office for 26 years, and she also has experience in the private sector, having been involved with a small business for six years. She was also the admitting manager at Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals for eight years.

“I welcome Buddy’s challenge,” she said. “Everybody needs the choice.”

Bell-Thomson said she has a unique viewpoint with her experiences in the public and private realms. She said one of the top issues in Islamorada is the quality of life for those who live and work in the village.

“We have seen a little bit of degradation in that, and it’s not just traffic,” she said. “There’s a difference between quality tourism and quantity.”

Bell-Thomson has also said that a toll is needed on the 18-mile stretch, and “it’s a battle I am prepared to fight.”

Pinder says he’s looking forward to a respectful campaign.

“The residents will choose who they want to represent them, and their concerns will not fall on deaf ears if I am elected,” Pinder said.

Pinder said he will work to alleviate strains on resources created by projects like the pedestrian bridge near Founders Park and Fills and “not let

these projects become financial burdens to our residents.”

Mark Gregg, former councilman and retired real estate lawyer, and Cheryl Meads, former councilwoman and an at-large member on the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board, will face off for seat 2. Current vice mayor Ken Davis will face Henry Rosenthal for seat 4, while Larry Zettwoch, former pilot, will square off against David Webb, who’s also a retired pilot, for seat 5. Winners in the Nov. 3 general election will serve a two-year term.

tudents who are returning to the Key Largo School campus in less than a week are going to notice some changes in the classroom, the hallways and the cafeteria.

They’re also in for a pleasant surprise when they enter newly-renovated Tornado territory.

A fresh paint scheme composed of various blue shades reinvigorates the Key Largo School gymnasium. At both ends of the court, the mats with the school logo and the words “Tornado” and “warning” give the facility a slick, professional look.

The gym revamp started in early May after a project bid award to Burke Construction Group, out of Key West, was approved by the Monroe County School Board a month earlier for a total cost of $987,500. Installation of bleachers and sound panels are all that’s left before the project’s finished, principal Laura Lietaert said.

“I think students are going to be overwhelmed,” she said. “With the work beginning in May, it was perfect because we didn’t have kids at the time, so construction crews could work on it without displacing us to renovate.

We’re super excited at the way it came out and I know staff who’ve had the chance to see it are very excited.”

Renovating the gym has been many years in the making. The school board approved the project earlier this year. Holding out on the project allowed the school to add more components, Lietaert said. Depending on class and function, basketball hoops can be lower or raised, as well as folded up, electronically.

The far side of the basketball court used to be 3 feet from the wall, which left teams and coaches sitting in front of spectators. With a court shift, players and coaches will now be stationed on the opposite side of the court from parents and fans.

Extra volleyball courts were installed so the school can host volleyball tournaments when safe to do so.

As for the sound system, Lietaert said it’s “amazing.”

Lietaert said she also likes the look of the new safety mats at the north and south ends of the court. Cheryl Conley, assistant principal, said Lietaert and she were able to provide input for their “Tornado warning” idea.

“They gave us four designs to pick from, and the minute we saw this design, we said ‘that’s it,’” Conley said.

Students are set to return to the classrooms on Monday, Sept. 14.

Lietaert said the school sent a survey to parents to gauge how many kids are coming back. It appears a majority will be returning. Virtual orientations are underway between students and staff.

The school started Aug. 19 with everybody working from screens at home, except some of the students whose parents were teaching classes from their rooms. And recently, the school started to bring more students back to campus.

“Last week, we had about 130 kids here each day,” Lietaert said. “We’re very excited to have them here where they’re supervised by teachers or paraprofessionals. They’re still doing online learning that everyone at home is doing, but they get to be here and get some extra help.”

Facebook post by the Monroe County School District was taken down on Sept. 2 after it said teachers from two Upper Keys schools were being resistant to returning to the classroom this week.

The subject of the post surrounded orientation for Florida Keys schools, which began after the Labor Day weekend. But the post said teachers from Coral Shores High School and Plantation Key School “are resistant to returning to school next week so orientation at those schools may, indeed, be canceled.”

“If your child goes to school at one of those two schools, please call the school ... to find out what they plan to do during the next week,” the post reads. “All other schools are planning to hold orientations as scheduled.”

The post was taken off the school district’s Facebook page not long after it was put up. Monroe County Schools Superintendent Theresa Axford issued an apology on the morning of Sept. 3 via Facebook, stating that it contained

incorrect information and a poor choice of words. Parents were encouraged to contact school offices for details on back-to-school orientations.

The Monroe County School District is proceeding with a phased reopening that starts with students attending orientation in small groups through Friday, Sept. 11. By Monday, Sept. 14, students will be back in school, with elementary age students attending Monday through Friday. Middle and high school students will be on a schedule of alternating days for in-person and virtual instruction.

In-person instruction is voluntary at this point, according to the school district. But parents have to make a decision as to whether their children will spend the entire semester virtual or go back to the classroom by the end of the month.

The Keys Weekly reached out to the school district and principals from Coral Shores High School and Plantation Key School on the post, but no comment was received before press time.

here are more than 90,000 registered Little Free Library booksharing boxes in 91 countries worldwide. During September’s Literacy Month, United Way of Collier and the Keys have added six more in Monroe County.

The libraries were made possible thanks to a donation of retired newspaper kiosks from a local media company, conversion of the kiosks by Melissa Wilson of Marathon, support from Andy and Stephanie Griffiths of Key West, and decorating efforts by many volunteers.

Health department reports 4 more COVID-19 deaths Three deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported to the Florida Health Department in Monroe County on Sept. 7 and one more on Sept. 9, bringing the total death count locally to 20 since the pandemic began earlier in the year. New reported daily cases are in the single digits. Statewide, new case reports reached lows not seen since mid-June.

Latest reports confirm the deaths of a 77-year-old female, 91-year-old male, a 62-year-old male and 50-yearold male — the youngest to pass from COVID-19 in the county. The residents had underlying health conditions, the health department said.

To date, three residents in the 85-plus age group and nine in the 7584 age range have passed away from COVID-19. Three between the ages of 65 and 74 and four between 55 and 64 have died. COVID-19-related deaths account for 1% of the confirmed positive cases in Monroe County, which is just below the state’s 2% death rate among all cases.

A total of 25 positive cases were reported from Sept. 2 to Sept. 9. That brings the total cases in Monroe County to 1,763 since mid-March. Key West has had the most confirmed cases to date, 800, followed by Key Largo, 248.

‘IT’S ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS’ 2020 census determines critical funding and government representation

ou’ve completed your census form, right?”

Barbara Overton is the state census chair for the League of Women Voters of Florida.

She bounces between Miami and her home in Tavernier, and she’s encouraging everyone to be counted, soon.

“Monroe County’s self-response rate is really, really low: 45% compared to 62.1% for all of Florida,” Overton told the Keys Weekly. “This doesn’t include the results from the bureau’s enumerators knocking on doors, but that’s a huge gap to make up.”

Every 10 years, the U.S. census counts everyone living in the country to determine America’s population and how it’s distributed. The results help determine government representation and funding for states and local communities, Overton said.

Census data is used by the federal government to determine how many seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and in drawing Congressional districts, and by state governments to make determinations about state Senate and House seats and districts, Overton said.

“We expect that Florida will gain two additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives as a result of this census,” she said.

Moreover, over $1.5 trillion in annual federal funding is divvied up to states and individuals based on the census.

“This includes money for schools, infrastructure, hospitals, emergency services, job training programs, child care and senior centers, various assistance programs, and more,” Overton said. “Florida should receive about $3,000 annually in federal funding for

every person counted.”

Finally, businesses use census data to identify the need for housing, supermarkets and other necessities in local communities.

It works because the census counts everyone, not just citizens.

“We know that immigrants fear their responses would be used to identify and penalize them or their undocumented household members,” Overton said. “We must spread the word that there is no citizenship question and that your answers may not be used against you.”

The census should take about 10 minutes to complete. Information requested includes: how many people reside in your home, their names, ages, races, phone numbers, sex, date of birth, whether they are of Hispanic origin and whether the home is rented or owned.

This year, for the first time ever, the census is also allowing respondents to specify that they are part of a same-sex couple.

Ways to respond include: Online: Visit 2020census.gov.

Phone: 844-330-2020 (English speakers). The Census Bureau also offers language assistance via phone for 12 non-English languages and offers translated web pages and guides in 59 languages.

Mail: People were mailed a unique code early this year. If you have not received or have lost your code, select the “I do not have a Census code” link when answering the questions online.

In-person: Census workers (called enumerators) are knocking on doors in the county right now.

This year, with the economic downturn, accurate counts are more important than ever to gain access to critical funds.

Marge Holtz, president of the League of Women Voters of the Lower Keys, agreed, saying “Our little county of just 74,000 residents is heavily dependent on programs to assist with school lunches, special-needs families, medical and social services programs.

If people who live in Monroe County do not respond, our population numbers will be lower, and the funding for essential Monroe County programs will be cut. It’s all about the numbers.”

The deadline to respond is Wednesday, Sept. 30, although one federal court ruling has delayed that until Oct. 31. A hearing scheduled for Sept. 17 in that case will determine whether the count continues past September.

n the hurricane-hardened Florida Keys, a generator is, quite literally, a powerful and often priceless tool.

With 81 days remaining in the 2020 hurricane season (as of Sept. 10), Keys Weekly spoke with Wil Howerton, who launched his new business, Key West Generator, when he moved permanently to the Florida Keys in May. “After 10 years as an electrical contractor it was, during the Y2K panic, just before 2000, when people thought the power grid was going to shut down, that I saw an opportunity for a niche in the market,” Howerton said.

“That’s when I jumped into the generator arena with both feet and have specialized in them ever since.”

From the portable “suitcase” styles that typically live in Florida Keys garages or on a raised platform underneath stilt homes, to the industrial-sized “standby power” units that kick on instantly in an outage and can power a whole building, Howerton can sell, fix and maintain them all.

“In fact, I just worked on Monroe County’s generator in their Emergency Management facility,” he said. “There’s definitely a need down here for an experienced generator company.”

Howerton is a certified technician for Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, GE, but can fix and maintain all brands. (“The only thing that’s not my specialty is marine generators,” he said.)

“If, say, a Honda generator is still under warranty, the owner will have to contact a certified Honda service rep for repairs, but if it’s out of warranty, I’m happy to work on it,” said Howerton.

Key West Generator is based on Cudjoe Key, but takes care of clients from Key West to Marathon. Howerton also works with local electricians to ensure he’s not stepping on anyone’s toes during a new construction project or a maintenance program for existing generators.

Keys Weekly asked Howerton for some tips and advice about generators, particularly during storm season.

Here’s what the expert had to say: What’s the best advice you can give generator owners in the Florida Keys? Like everything related to hurricanes, preparedness is key. Waiting until the last minute and just assuming you’ll fuel ’er up and plug things in is a mistake. If you wait until a storm is on the horizon, you’re going to have trouble getting access to the people and materials you might need.

What do you, as an expert, look for when evaluating your clients’ generator needs and system? It’s important to get someone who’s familiar with the climate and conditions in the Keys. I look at how high a generator needs to be off the ground; how much air is getting into the system, the amount and type of fuel an owner will need.

And I always, always emphasize the dangers of carbon monoxide getting into a home. I check for CO detectors and proper ventilation. My clients get a complete approach from start to finish: consultation, installation, maintenance and repair.

Is it really necessary to have “a generator guy” such as yourself, or can someone who’s handy handle things themselves? I get it. A lot of people with a portable generator have a do-it-yourself approach to many things. Everyone thinks they’ll be fine on their own, and often they are. But when a storm is coming, and we get busy, if you have an existing relationship in place with a pro, you’ll be higher on our list for service calls. At Key West Generator, our priorities for service are the government and senior citizens first, then our existing clients, then our first-time callers. If you’re not on our client list, there’s no guarantee we’ll get to you before the storm does.

ommunity Health of South Florida Inc. (CHI) has announced a new student education affiliation agreement with the College of the Florida Keys (CFK). This agreement will provide valuable, real-life, on-the-job training for nursing students in Monroe County, as the two organizations are teaming up to meet market demands and address nationwide shortages in the healthcare sector.

“This partnership will allow the college to expand the nursing program and explore the possibility of additional programs in the future,” said Mark Roby, dean of sciences and nursing at the College of the Florida Keys.

The partnership, with the college’s nursing program, will provide students with practical experience at CHI’s Marathon and Tavernier Health Centers, and an opportunity to serve the communities in which they live.

CHI’s Brodes H. Hartley Jr. Teaching Health Center has been training the next generation of health care professionals for years.

This agreement extends that educational opportunity to nursing students in the Keys.

“Our vision is to serve as a teaching center of excellence for health care professionals,” said

Brodes H. Hartley Jr., president and CEO of CHI. “Many of the students that train with us return to work for CHI. That’s a compliment and testament to our work culture and the quality of our experience. This agreement will help us to strengthen those ties with the College of the Florida Keys and the Monroe County communities.”

Both organizations have been serving the community for about 50 years and both have a presence in Key West, Marathon and Tavernier.

The College of the Florida Keys is an institution providing higher education and workforce training opportunities, while embracing island life.

ept. 10 is a date that will always be remembered in the Keys, and this year marks three long years since Hurricane Irma devastated portions of our chain of islands. Evidence of Irma’s wrath remains and these have been three years of struggling to rebuild our community. While it hasn’t been easy, most residents have now recovered or are close to doing so.

Almost half of Monroe County’s year-round residents struggle to make ends meet, living paycheck to paycheck, just one disaster away from household instability. Irma was this disaster for so many families. United Way and the community have worked hard to help make the dream of recovery, which may have seemed impossible three years ago, become reality for these Keys residents. From gift cards and cleaning supplies in the immediate aftermath to helping with financial assistance and repairing childcare facilities, United Way of Collier and the Keys has led community partners supporting Keys residents throughout this disaster.

Immediately after the storm, United Way made the commitment that 100% of funds raised would directly benefit the Keys community through individual assistance or through our network of vetted, established nonprofit partners. United Way knew that recovery would begin with initial relief, continue with recovery, and, finally, transition to rebuilding. Hurricane funds provided assistance such as short-term housing, case management for residents, rental or mortgage assistance, mental health services, free legal aid, rebuilding damaged facilities and homes, and replacing destroyed items at child care centers and health care facilities.

June 2020 saw the final disbursement of the $1.7 million raised for Hurricane Irma Relief funds in the Keys,

United Way provided Boys and Girls Club with supplies to open a temporary location in Big Pine after its location was destroyed, and helped replace its van so they could begin safely providing after-school care again in this hard-hit area.

all of which has now been distributed in the community. This helped complete projects at nonprofit partners that were still unfinished and included awnings for five facilities serving families, patio and generator repairs at a transitional housing shelter, replacing a destroyed ice maker at a childcare center, installing storage at four local schools for donated clothes and basic necessities for students in crisis, and more. During the past year, $60,000 in United Way financial assistance also aided 219 Keys residents still struggling with purchasing furniture and appliances, rental deposits, minor home repairs and other expenses needed to finish their recovery. Rebuilding ‘Camp Dub’ after Hurricane Irma (Editor’s Note: This retrospective was originally destined for our Home & Garden magazine in April 2020, but its publication was postponed due to the start of the pandemic. We at Keys Weekly thought it a perfect tribute to a hard-working family on this week’s third anniversary of Hurricane Irma.)

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma roared through the Caribbean, tracking an ominous route toward South Florida and the Florida Keys.

On Sept. 10, the storm swung across our island chain as a walloping Category 4, hitting the Lower and Middle Keys with a powerful landfall on Cudjoe Key. In the weeks that followed, people emerged from shelters or slowly made their way back from mainland outposts.

Numbers emerged — 6.5 million Florida residents ordered to evacuate (the largest hurricane evacuation in U.S. history), $50 billion in damage, 123 lives lost in Florida. All told, Irma went down as the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history. But statistics are of little use to residents who endured the aftermath firsthand.

Kim and Josh Wallen had rented on Big Pine Key for 15 years before purchasing their first home on Summerland Key in 2014. “The architecture of the place was great. We always saw so much potential,” Kim Wallen said. “We had so many ideas and always knew we could do great things with it. Be careful what you wish for,” she laughed.

As Irma bore down on the Caribbean, the Wallens — Kim and Josh and their three boys — reluctantly packed up and left ahead of the storm’s arrival.

In the days following landfall, they dutifully checked and rechecked for new satellite images, holding out hope that their home had survived. The first murky images to emerge showed their homestead standing, but worse for the wear after a brutal fight with the elements. They had lost a large portion of their roof, windows had blown out, and the 3 feet of floodwater that invaded their lot had rendered their ground-level guesthouse a total loss. The vegetation, as in the rest of the Keys, had also been stripped from their property, turning the aerial view from verdant to dust-laden. Ever pragmatic and proactive, Team Wallen set to work straight away, literally, rebuilding their lives. They found a temporary rental in Key West and returned to the Florida Keys two weeks after the storm.

“When we came back, we drove straight to Key West so the kids wouldn’t have to see the house,” said Kim. “Josh and I went back up, just the two of us initially, to see the damage in person. It was heartbreaking. There were family pictures all over the yard.” The Wallens picked themselves up, though, and made a plan. They started the tedious process of applying for assistance immediately after the storm.

“It’s not necessarily just about rebuilding,” Kim said, recalling the insurance companies and mortgage adjusters that initially occupied the bulk of their time. The firms would provide 50% of the promised funds up front, but required the work to be 100% complete before they would disburse the remaining balance. And it took a full year for the Wallens to get even the initial payment and begin the work. While the initial payment and forward progress provided an undeniable sense of purpose and relief, it also left the Wallens holding a hefty bill for half the cost of a major renovation.

“We took out a loan and went ahead with the work. Josh is in construction and we’re both super handy,” Kim said. The couple hired experts for plumbing and electrical work, but tackled the rest with their own hands, investing elbow grease where dollars fell short. Josh led the charge on construction while Kim turned her keen eye toward the overall design and details that would make the end result sing.

The family spent seven months in Key West while Kim and Josh first repaired and readied the guesthouse, and then lived in it for a year and a half, gazing out the windows as their dream home took

shape a few yards away. During that time, red tape gave way to blue paint and the Wallens spent their time and energy productively pounding nails rather than futilely fighting insurance companies.

Kim has an uncanny knack for looking beyond the trauma of Irma and seeing the process as a positive experience for their family.

“I’ve been fortunate to be able to make the house soulful, and to have done that with my husband,” Kim said, deciding to regard Irma as the push that propelled them to do the work they had always planned.

The finish line is finally in sight, although the Wallen family didn’t receive the final bit of insurance money until late January 2019 — nearly two and a half years after Hurricane Irma hammered the island chain with a gut punch to its midsection.

More importantly, though, the completion of Kim’s stunning master bathroom, with its scalloped blue mermaid tile, just hit her social media hashtag goal of a #BubblebathbyValentines. The scaled tile in the bathroom speaks to her aquatic soul and is just one detail of thousands that personifies the couple. The dreamy open kitchen reflects the Wallens’ love of family while their use of reclaimed wood confirms their commitment to preserving the Keys — and their celebration of second chances.

Though the project has been a labor of love, by April 2020, the Wallens were beyond ready to wrap it up and return to life as they knew it, a life that, up until September 2017, had revolved around the water.

Josh and the boys fished to the point of practically sprouting gills, and Kim’s talent for creating gyotaku (fish) prints spawned her own design company, Kdubz Designs.

But in the months — and years — following Hurricane Irma, “There was no free time, no fishing,” Kim said when asked about the most challenging part of the project.

With a venture years in the making, it was difficult for the Wallens to believe that the entryway of their home would ever again be a repository for masks, fins and fishing tackle.

But it’s happening. Viewed for years as a Herculean project, the house on Summerland Key is becoming, once again, a cherished home.

As with any trauma, there are days when Irma is a distant memory and the brilliance of the bathroom tile overcomes the visions of prized and personal possessions strewn down the street.

Other days, those memories flood forward. “You think sometimes that everyone has recovered and that it’s just me,” Kim said “Then you realize, people are still waiting, or they’re only living in one room of a house. There’s still a lot of sadness. Everyone here has an Irma story.” One thing that brings solace to the Wallens, and other families of the Middle Keys, is the knowledge that they’ve survived and that new life (and hopefully beautiful bathrooms) can grow from the most dire of circumstances.

SCULPTURES ENHANCE FLORIDA KEYS TRAIL

A

trail featuring sculptures at sites along the Overseas Highway recently added a few “Fragments” in Islamorada’s Morada Way Arts & Cultural District.

Those passing through Islamorada may have noticed tall statues of human figures positioned on open property located at MM 80.1, bayside. They were installed a few months ago as an addition to the Florida Keys Sculpture Trail, which spans from MM 81 to the Key West International Airport. Key West philanthropists Jacob Dekker, who passed away Sept. 1, 2019, and John Padget gave the sculptures and launched the public art trail.

Sculptures of various sizes and shapes were created by artists in the prestigious Art Students League of New York’s “Model to Monument” program that trains an international team of sculptors in the public art process.

They were installed in Manhattan’s Riverside Park South along the Hudson River back in 2016, but they’ve now found a new home in the Keys. “Fragments” was created by Shiho Sato of Yokohama, Japan, who moved to New York City in search of its arts community.

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts was in charge of placing the sculptures, in collaboration with Monroe County Art in Public Places Committee and Monroe County Board of County Commissioners. Elizabeth Young, Florida Keys Council of the Arts executive director, said the three sculptures were given to the Morada Ways Arts & Cultural District. With their sophisticated and Italian renaissance feel, the three monumental human figures reflect the artist’s hope to create ongoing dialogue among visitors.

“We’re really grateful to Mr. Padget and the late Mr. Dekker for their vision,” Young said. “It’s really turned into something more than any of us ever anticipated.”

Rio Campbell, Morada Way Arts and Cultural District executive director, said she’s thrilled to present “Fragments” to the Florida Keys community and its visitors. Sato’s visually arresting and dynamic trio of sculptures directs the viewer’s eyes toward emerging human forms. By not fully rendering the human form in each sculpture, Sato is commenting on how humanity is forever intertwined and deeply connected to the

environment around us. “‘Fragments’ can be initially startling; however, it asks the viewer to spend time inspecting the nuances of the material, so very reminiscent of local limestone and coral,” Campbell said. “Sato has stated that ‘Fragments’ is meant to grow and become one with the natural ecosystem around it.”

Campbell added that Morada Way Arts and Cultural District has plans to incorporate native Florida landscaping with the installation to highlight the sculpture’s representation of humanity’s deep connection to the natural world.

“MWACD would like to extend its immense gratitude and thanks to the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, without whom this would not be possible,” she said.

Placing the three sculptures required a bit of work beforehand, since the property they’re located on is owned by the Florida Department of Transportation. Beth Kaminstein, District 4 representative for the Art in Public Places Committee, worked with the village and Morada Way Arts and Cultural District to get permission from FDOT. About $10,000 was raised to obtain pedestals for the sculptures, which Native Construction installed, Young said.

With “Fragments” being the latest addition, the sculpture trail will see three more sculptures en route to the Keys. Young said the theme of the new sculptures is wave in nature.

The sculpture “Gaea” is a strong female piece by Gaia Grossi about being respectful of Mother Nature.

It will be placed at Mote Marine Laboratory’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Restoration and Research on Summerland Key. “Moire 3” is a waveresembling piece by Frank Michielli that will be placed at Big Pine Community Park, while “Wavehenge,” a 12-foot stainless steel wave with benches by Jeff Sundheim, will be installed at Truman Waterfront Park in Key West.

“The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is grateful for the support of the board of county commissioners, Islamorada council and Key West city commissioners who’ve supported this project along the way,” Young said.

n a private island in the Florida Keys known as Craig Cay, a brand new luxury home under construction on more than 1.5 acres has traded hands for $8.6 million.

It’s the highest sale the Keys has seen not only in 2020, but since 2017. Kelly K. Shaw and Trent M. P. Shaw, of American Caribbean, Christie’s International Real Estate, held the listing and procured the buyer.

“Craig Cay has been one of the most outstanding and lucrative listings in my 28-year career of selling luxury estates in the Florida Keys, resulting in thousands of inquiries over the years,” said Kelly Shaw. “I have had the distinct privilege of participating in the past three sales of this property since my original sale in 2004, and again in 2017. My son, Trent M. P. Shaw, joined our team in 2012 and worked with me to exceed expectations on this sale. While we would have loved to sell the finished product, we know the new owners have even bigger and better plans for this wonderful estate, and we look forward to following Craig Cay’s progress over time.”

Craig Cay was sold under construction as a shell for a groundlevel 9,737-square-foot home.

This is the 10th sale north of $5 million in 2020, with American Caribbean Real Estate participating in one-third of those transactions, and now making this the highest in the area since 2017. This deal comes on the heels of the sale of Ballast Trail, which closed in July for $6.7 million, the second-highest sale of 2020. Kelly and Trent Shaw held the listing for this sale as well.

MARATHON’S MICHAEL PETTIT IS PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON A FEATURE-LENGTH COMEDY SARA MATTHIS

arathon native Michael Pettit is finalizing the details on a feature-length film he co-directed.

The comedy, “A Day in the Life,” was shot earlier this year in Jacksonville, Florida over two weeks. If the trailer is any indication of the film’s future success, the Florida Keys can claim another talented artist for the history books.

“We’re just finishing the way it looks, working on the sound and hiring someone to make the musical score,” Pettit said. “We have industry professionals working on this stuff.”

Pettit also said the film is well-rounded.

“It’s not like we used just the funniest bits for the trailer,” he said.

The film stars Jake Pearthree, who also co-directs with Pettit. Pearthree’s character (Casey) finds a bag of money. The movie unreels 24 hours in the life of Nick and Ricky who set out to spend the ill-gotten gains in an attempt to cheer up Nick, who is suffering over a bad break-up. Of course, the bad guys are hot on the trail of the cash and the three friends.

“A Day in the Life” is a madcap, modern take on coming-of-age, a la “Booksmart,” the 2019 hit film directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein.

with “We Do Feel Bad,” a short movie that became a finalist in the national Campus Movie Fest. Pettit is a graduate of Florida State University, and Pearthree graduated from University of North Florida. The two hatched the idea for “A Day in the Life” about a year ago. All of the pre-production was done over the phone from L.A. (Pearthree) and Atlanta, New York and the Florida Keys (Pettit).

And then came COVID. “It was touch and go for a while, but we figured out a way to film safely,” Pettit said. Cameras were rented, locations scouted, and auditions were virtual. The actors hail from all over — New York, North Carolina, Orlando. The film features about 30 characters, but the directors kept interactions minimal with at most only 10 on the set at any given time.

Pettit was probably more prepared for the pandemic than anyone; he’s used to thinking outside the box. Although he was determined to become a filmmaker after graduating from Marathon High School in 2013, he didn’t enroll in film school. Instead, he majored in English (editing, writing and media).

“I wanted to be more entrepreneurial, to network, and surround myself with other creative people. I’m big on collaboration. So while I hung around the fringes of the film school, I wasn’t part of it,” he said. And he worked. Hard. “I didn’t go out a lot; I wasn’t doing normal college things. I was writing, and working and studying filmmakers and watching interviews. And eventually I learned how to replicate things I learned into something that looks like a movie.”

Through his wide network of friends, Pettit said, he was brought onto other projects, sometimes as a cameraman, sometimes as an unpaid intern. After graduating from FSU, he left a paid gig on a FOX television series filmed in Atlanta to intern for free in New York City on “Never Rarely Sometimes Always.” And although that job entailed standing in the rain for sometimes 15 hours a day (“telling New Yorkers they can’t use the sidewalk; you can imagine how well that went over”) it was all part of the learning experience he needed. And that led to … painting houses.

“I came back to the Keys and painted villas at Hawks Cay to save enough money so we could shoot ‘A Day in the Life,’” Pettit said. Both Pettit and Pearthree chipped in their own funds, and a Kickstarter fund did the rest.

What’s next? Pettit and Pearthree need to find a distributor for the movie. And it would be great to have it entered into some film festivals. Most definitely he wants to direct again.

“If ‘A Day in the Life’ makes it at a festival and someone comes up to us and says, ‘You two. I must have you on my next project,’ I would love that. The chances of that happening … well, but it could. And then Pearthree and I would have no choice but to team up again and make another comedy.”

But he’s also seriously considering solo directing a dramatic film, based in the Florida Keys.

“Honestly, I want to do something in the Keys. I want to make some stuff happen,” he said.

We think it’s happening already. We smell cult classic.

Constitution Celebration features special speaker The 2nd annual Constitution Day Celebration on Thursday, Sept.

17 will feature Carolyn JeffersonJenkins, an educator, activist, advocate, author and historian. She served as the 15th president of the League of Women Voters of the United States and president of the Colorado Springs Business and Professional Women. The topic of the presentation will be “An America as Good as its Promise.”

At the event, the winners of a student essay contest will be presented. The topic of the essay is “Women Power the Vote.” Local middle and high school students have been asked to write about how to honor the strong women who persisted in their fight to vote despite many obstacles and what is the best way to use this power.

The event will also include a presentation on the proposed constitutional amendment 3 – open primaries.

The Upper Keys League of Women Voters and the Upper Keys Business and Professional Women have invited the public to join the virtual celebration on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There is no charge to attend but registration is required. Islamorada parks, beaches, ramps open at 50% Islamorada parks, beaches and boat ramps reopened on Sept.

8 after closures that lasted from lobster mini-season through Labor Day. The closures were a continuation of local governmental efforts to reduce the community spread of COVID-19.

All facilities are now open.

Capacity will be limited to 50% to ensure social distancing can be maintained by people visiting the parks. Everyone over the age of six must have a mask with them at all times and wear a mask when social distancing is not possible.

ROCKING FOR A CAUSE A-List musicians play for the kids

O

ne of the toughest things about this socially distant damn pandemic has been the impact on live music.

Musicians and music lovers have been hit hard, because we’d all like to have that live local music experience.

That’s why fans of live local Keys music will want to mark Sunday, Sept.

13, 6 p.m. on their calendars: Presents In Paradise is hosting an online Facebook Live Concert featuring a lineup of A-List Keys musicians: Tropical Rockers Concert for the Kids! Presents is a Keys charity that has helped local working families at Christmas for 17 years. Event organizers and participants (of which I’m one) are hopeful that the mix of talent will get you to tune in … and donate what you can.

Here are the musicians who are playing: Terry Cassidy, a long-time local singer-songwriter who also happens to be an amazing instrumentalist on guitar and banjo. Terry has played in the Keys for nearly 40 years, and has written many songs that have turned up on the several albums (LPs, cassettes, CDs, etc.) he has released throughout the years.

Adrienne Z is a singer-songwriter with an angelic voice and beautiful songs. She performs a great solo show as well as leading her own band, and she has released numerous recordings over the years. Her latest full-length solo album, “Chameleons,” really shows off Adrienne’s songwriting, vocals, instrumentals and arranging skills.

Brian Roberts is a very wellknown singer-songwriter who happens to be a very talented instrumentalist as well. His solo shows on acoustic six- and 12-string guitars have kept him steadily booked in both clubs and weddings, and his band, the Prime Movers, really knows how to get an audience moving.

Freddie Bye is the legendary guitarist-singer-songwriter who has held down one of the longest house gigs in the Keys. People have come from all over the world to see Freddie at the Brass Monkey for nearly four decades, and his mad guitar skills are the envy of many a string-slinger.

I’ll be performing at the event as well, and I am honored to share the stage with these very talented folks, who also happen to be good friends.

It’s incredible that each musician who was contacted didn’t hesitate a minute before saying they would be happy to perform. The event will be staged with the gracious help of the Florida Keys Country Club, and broadcast with technology provided

by Duane Webster and Broadwave.

We’ll have some local dignitaries on hand to help with stage transitions and explain just what Presents does in the commuJOHN nity. For those who don’t know, Presents In Paradise provides local working families a way to provide Christmas while strengthening those families and their traditions. Occasionally described as “a clothing program disguised as a Christmas charity,” Presents works with families on a specific wish list for each individual child, and their “stealth elves” get the gifts to the families.

Clothing, shoes, bicycles, tablets, athletic equipment, and fun and educational toys are all provided to families free of charge. What is never on the list: video games.

Last year, Presents In Paradise provided holiday gifts to more than 340 children here in the Keys. This year, they expect the need to double: likely 500 to 700 children this year with the ongoing impact from COVID-19.

This also makes fundraising really tough, with the normal charity events not possible.

BRIEFLY Upper Keys museum hosts virtual exhibit Join curator Brad Bertelli for live segments which take a deeper look at the historical significance of the Upper Keys. These stories will be told both from within the Keys History & Discovery Center and out in the community, incorporating a “field trip” format launched in the spring. P-o-s-t-p-o-n-e-d: ‘Not-So’ Annual Bee Habitat for Humanity of the Middle Keys has postponed its “NotSo” Annual Spelling Bee. The event, which is held most years, benefits Habitat’s efforts to provide housing to those who need it. The next bee now is scheduled for 2021.

Organizers made the decision based on the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and virtual schooling this year.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month During this month, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County in partnership with the Guidance/Care Center, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Key West Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover, and other mental health advocates, will be drawing attention to a national public health issue — suicide.

In Monroe County, there is a higher rate of suicide compared to other counties in Florida. Suicide currently ranks as the second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 10 and 24. It is also among the leading causes of preventable death in the United States.

“Our biggest focus this month is to raise awareness and resolve people’s fears. Help is available even for those who cannot pay for

it. Suicide is preventable if we can connect ourselves and others to professional help – losing one more life in Monroe County is one too many. It is not hopeless,” said Maureen Dunleavy of the Guidance/Care Center, Inc. • The Guidance/Care Center local hotline is available 24/7 at 305-4347660, Option 8.

Bonefish tournament set for late September The 61st annual Marathon International Bonefish Tournament is set for Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept.

27. Registration begins on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon, followed by the captain’s meeting at 5:30 p.m.

he endless summer has come to a halt as Monroe schools begin letting students back into the classroom and as Marathon High School is eager to announce that all sports will be in session this fall officially beginning on Sept. 8.

FHSAA made the first official announcement on July 27 to push back the start of athletics to Aug. 24. Shortly after, the FHSAA took a board vote and got an 11-5 count in favor of resuming athletics.

They then left the decision to each individual county to decide whether they would be ready and if it would be safe enough for students to return. Many schools resumed practicing on Aug. 24; however, the Keys elected to begin later. Most of the county school districts in Florida have made the decision to continue practicing with the exception of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties due to continued high levels of community spread of COVID-19.

The following is a rundown of each sports’ plan: • Varsity football: Sept. 8, first official practice. Contact coach Mac Childress for further information.

• Varsity/JV volleyball: Tryouts were on Sept. 8-9. Contact coach Kevin Freeman for further information.

• Cross country: Sept. 8, first official practice. Contact coach Jim Murphy for further information.

Students are advised to contact coaches right away, even if they have missed tryouts or practices have already begun. Students who will be continuing with virtual education this semester are still welcome to participate in the after-school athletics. LADIES, LET’S GO FISHING ‘NO-YELLING SCHOOL’ EVENT UPCOMING

spiring anglers can learn, practice skills and go fishing at the award-winning “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing! Keys University” from Friday through Sunday, Oct. 23-25 in the sport fishing capital of the world.

Hosted by the nonprofit Ladies Let’s Go Fishing Foundation, the “No-Yelling School of Fishing” offers classroom presentations, two networking events, hands-on skill practice and optional charter boat fishing. Classes will be held at the waterfront Elks Lodge in Tavernier.

No equipment or experience is necessary.

Optional charter fishing out of Islamorada is offered on Oct. 23 and 24 with prizes awarded for the LLGF Fishing Fever tournament to people fishing both days.

Activities launch on the evening of Oct. 23 with a networking social and appetizer contest from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday morning indoor presentations begin at 9 a.m, covering offshore, inshore and bottom fishing, plus fishing basics and conservation.

Speakers include Captains Lee Lavery, Jeanne Towne and more. Setting this program apart

from typical fishing classes are the hands-on fishing activities taught by several guides for releasing, knot tying, dehooking, bait rigging, spin casting, gaffing, cast netting and more. A second networking party will be held afterwards at Seaside Glassworks. Any virtual meeting substitutions based on CDC policies will be announced on the website.

Optional inshore and offshore fishing charter trips out of Whale Harbor, followed by a fillet demonstration, will take place on Oct. 23 and 25.

The Tavernier Elks Club is located at 92600 Overseas Hwy, Tavernier. Ladies may register a male guest or teens to include the whole family.

Online early registration rate is $125 per person. Regular entry is $145. VIP registration of $180 offers reserved seating, goody bag, a gift, future rebates and savings on souvenirs. What is something most people don’t know about you? That I went to Tanzania with the Experiment in International Living in the summer of 2018 (I’m just kidding; everyone knows that I talk about it literally all the time), but many people don’t know that I am a pescatarian!

Who is your all-time favorite teacher? I would have to say Dianne Wischmeier. She was my teacher for three levels of calculus over three years, a program that she basically built from the ground up, and was truly dedicated to making sure every one of us mastered the subject.

What does “a good education” mean to you? It is important to find a balance between academics, sports, clubs, your social life and sleep. Especially sleep! Without balance, high school will become either too overwhelming, or a waste of opportunity.

What is something you know now that you didn’t know when you were a freshman? That you do not need your shin splints rubbed out after every practice (sorry Coach Gabe). Also wear good running shoes so you don’t get shin splints in the first place!

What organizations and activities are you involved with at Coral Shores and why are they important to you? I am the captain of our cross country team, and also do varsity weightlifting and track, specifically hurdles. I am also editor-in-chief of the school yearbook, which has allowed me to get to know many of my fellow classmates and teachers on a more personal level.

What are your plans after high school? I hope to attend Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and major in science, technology and international affairs; with the career goal of working to encourage sustainable development in either Africa or Southeast Asia.

What do you hope to be remembered for at CSHS? I hope to be remembered for holding the school record in the 100 meter hurdles, and for helping Jennifer Webb save the yearbook program.

EXPERT TO TALK ABOUT EVOLUTION OF DIVING TECHNOLOGY H

istory of Diving Museum’s next virtual Immerse Yourself presentation is set to feature a Keys local who worked within the commercial diving industry for decades.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., Jon Hazelbaker, who’s also a HDM board member, will talk about his experience in hard-hat diving, working in the field and managing dive teams, which have provided the museum a wealth of knowledge and history over the years.

During the lecture, Hazelbaker will discuss the “CACHALOT” saturation diving system, which was used to perform the first commercial saturation diving projects for the U.S. inland and offshore diving industries.

The “CACHALOT” decompression chamber configuration, process and methodology became a blueprint for how commercial saturation diving is done today. Hazelbaker will also cover the basics of saturation diving and information on other early hyperbaric habitats.

In 1965, the “CACHALOT” system was used to work on the raw water intake of the Smith Mountain Dam located in Virginia. The construction of the dam was unique because the water system could manage the flow to run both downstream and reverse to push water upstream. Use of the saturation diving system saved hundreds of man hours by allowing divers to stay underwater at an average depth of 200 feet for extended periods without worrying about decompression. The following year, the “CACHALOT” would be used for the first commercial saturation diving project in the Gulf of Mexico for an oilfield salvage project at a depth of 235 feet.

Hazelbaker will speak on diving projects and how the system’s unique features would eventually be placed in modern commercial diving projects. He will also be sharing early photos and stories from the family members of George Wiswell, one of the developers of the “CACHALOT” and contractor for both projects.

Hazelbaker will also provide examples of other saturation units that were being used at the time and how those have

evolved into what’s seen today. He will also discuss the efforts the museum has made to acquire this commercial diving equipment as its first major outdoor exhibit.

The museum and Hazelbaker will be co-hosting the presentation live through a private Zoom meeting. Capacity will be limited, so register to reserve a spot.

The museum will stop taking reservations at 12 p.m. on Sept. 16 or when there are 100 registered participants. The session will be recorded and posted on the HDM YouTube page.

ut for her morning run to No Name Key, Pat Ceballos’ neighbor hurried to relay the sight of a seemingly injured frigatebird in the water by the bridge. As a volunteer of the Key West Wildlife Center, naturally Ceballos responded to the call and rushed to locate the animal.

“She was in water and couldn’t fly, but we couldn’t figure out why,” said Ceballos, recounting her arrival at the water’s edge to inspect the situation.

The frigatebird was far enough out that a boat was needed for rescue, but as she didn’t have one, Ceballos considered going back home and returning with a kayak in order to reach it. However, time was not on the bird’s side: frigates, unlike other seabirds, don’t “rest” on the water like cormorants or seagulls. In fact, it’s very dangerous for frigatebirds because their wings aren’t waterproof.

“Frigatebirds don’t float very well,” Ceballos said. “After a while they do sink, so it’s very important to get them as soon as possible.”

Michael Martin, a boater who lives a quarter mile out from Bogie Channel, noticed the frigatebird dive into the water, and not return to the surface.

Knowing as well that frigate-

birds cannot float for very long, he generously offered to pick Ceballos up and bring her out to the bird. With the use of his boat, and rescue equipment at the ready, Martin and Ceballos set out to retrieve the downed frigate.

It became apparent that the bird had been accidentally hit by a line cast by someone fishing off the bridge. “The fisherman had cut the line because he didn’t know what to do, but (Martin) was able to unwrap the weighted line from the bird’s wing,” Ceballos said.

This is a rescue story with a happy ending for all. Martin said he was able to return the line and sinker to the fisherman who, in return, donated some money to the Key West Wildlife Center. Martin decided it was fitting to name the frigate “Bogie,” as she had been rescued out of Bogie Channel.

The Key West Wildlife Center takes injured birds, rehabilitates them and releases them back into the wild. Thankfully, Bogie was not injured and only needed some time in the sun to dry off her wings before she received a clean bill of health (“no pun intended,” chuckled Martin) and flew away.
