DON’T PUNISH OUR LOCAL MUSICIANS We earnestly urge the city commission to please reconsider the current 10 foot ordinance in place for our local musicians performing behind plexiglass. It is extremely difficult for some musicians to perform wearing a mask, and essentially un-employs musicians who play a harmonica or horn. As of now, our local musicians, who are essential to the fabric of our local economy, are struggling (like many in this city) to survive. The 10 foot rule is excessive by nature, since according to CDC, NIH, and the WHO, plexiglass is a “barrier”; which is why someone can walk up to the counter of a CVS (or other business) and conduct business within 6 feet. Further, the 10-foot rule only accommodates a small percentage of locations in Key West, as many locations are already prohibited by space. Please consider an alteration to the enforced distance of 10 feet, which is excessive and not supported by Science.

We also respectfully ask the city commission to not undertake other measures that are not supported by Science. We urge locals to reach out to your city commissioners, asking them not to punish our neighbors, who need our support now more than ever. We are all in this together and we all agree that wearing masks and other safety requirements are essential to the health and safety of our residents and visitors, as long as such measures are supported by Science.

NUMBER OF THE WEEK The percentage of Floridians who say they are less likely to evacuate for a storm this year for fear of contracting the coronavirus, per a poll by AAA. The poll further found that more than a quarter of residents, 29%, say they would not leave their homes if they were warned to evacuate. “The coronavirus just complicates matters even more for those preparing for what is forecast to be an active hurricane season,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA.

COUNTY OFFERS RENTAL, MORTGAGE RELIEF $840,000 available for residents who are behind because of COVID-19 onroe County will be distributing funding totaling $838,069 to Monroe County residents who are behind in their mortgage or rent payments due to COVID-19 hardships. This is a countywide program and is inclusive of the municipalities. Anyone who rents or owns in the Florida Keys may be eligible.

Anyone who has been economically affected due to COVID-19 is eligible and the level of assistance will be considered individually based on need.

Documents needed for eligibility include the application, a copy of the applicant’s driver’s license or identification card, a lease or deed in the name of the applicant, a statement from the landlord or bank showing the applicant is behind in payments, and a notarized self-certification of income and assets.

Of the $838,000, Florida Housing Finance Corporation set aside $638,069 to help those

who fall under the 120 percent area median income range, meaning a single person can make $84,600 or less, or $120,840 per year for a family of four. The county moved $200,000 in CARES Act funding to help those who may not qualify under those conditions. The application will apply for both funding sources.

The application packet is available at www. monroecounty-fl.gov/covidhousingassistance.

Once completed with the proper documents, it can be returned via email, fax, or to drop boxes located at the social services office at the Tradewinds Shopping Center in Key Largo, the Marathon Senior Center/Meal Site, or the Gato Building in Key West. Additional funding for rental and mortgage assistance as well as a business assistance program may be made available at a later date.

VOTE BY MAIL Postal and election supervisors respond to questions about mail-in ballots

ue to the pandemic, voting will look a lot different in 2020.

Among the concerns is the efficacy and reliability of voting by mail, which has been called into question by national leaders including POTUS. The Keys Weekly reached out to Debra Fetterly, with the U.S. Postal Service covering the Alabama and South Florida districts, and the Keys’ Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin. By Sara Matthis & Mandy Miles ON MAILING BALLOTS: Are the Post Offices in Monroe County fully staffed? If not, how many positions are open? The Postal Service is flexing its available resources to match the workload created by the impacts of the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Does the Post Office make any operation changes in anticipation of the return of mail-in ballots either in August or November? The USPS is committed to delivering election mail in a timely manner. We employ a robust and proven process to ensure proper handling of all election mail, including ballots.

This includes close coordination and partnerships with election officials at the local and state levels. In addition to a 2020 Official Election Mail Kit (Kit 600), which was distributed to 11,500 election officials in March, the USPS will be sending a letter in the near term to election officials in states that have deadlines for requesting and casting mail-in ballots that, under our reading of their election laws, appear to be incongruous with the Postal Service’s delivery standards.

If a Monroe County resident mails a ballot in the Keys, is it processed at a Miami mail center before returning to the Keys? How many days does that take? Yes, Monroe County ballots are processed at the Miami Processing and Distribution Center. The service standard is two days. All available mail and packages are being delivered each day.

The Postal Service recommends that domestic, non-military voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their state’s due date to allow for timely receipt by election officials.

What challenges does the likely increase in mail-in ballots pose for the local Post Office? The Postal Service’s financial condition is not going to impact our ability to process and deliver election and political mail. The Postal Service has ample capacity to adjust our nationwide processing and delivery network to meet projected election and political mail volume, including any additional volume that may result as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our network is designed to handle increases in volume and deliver that mail in a timely manner.

Additionally, the Postal Service has long-standing processes to align workforce to workload, including contingencies to respond to events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Does an official mail-in ballot require postage? Yes. Not only is proper postage required by federal law, but it also helps ensure timely processing and delivery by the Postal Service. If a return ballot is nevertheless entered into the mailstream with insufficient or unpaid postage, it is the Postal Service’s policy not to delay the delivery of completed vote-by-mail ballots. In cases where a ballot enters the mailstream without the proper amount of postage, the Postal Service will collect postage from the appropriate board of elections.

ON THE ELECTION: The president’s stated concerns about mail-in ballots being potentially fraudulent has stirred up confusion.

What’s the difference between mail-in ballots and absentee ballots? There is no difference between the two. “Voting rights experts say there is no difference between the terms mail-in voting and absentee voting, and some jurisdictions such as Florida have scrubbed the latter term to avoid confusion among voters,” according to a July 30 article by Andrew Desiderio in Politico.

Forty-two states and the District of Columbia will allow any voter, regardless of age, health or location on Election Day, to vote by mail should they choose to do so.

The remaining eight states, including the large states of Texas and New York, require a valid excuse for a voter to request a voteby-mail ballot for November.

How many mail-in ballots have been requested in Monroe County for the Aug. 18 election? More than 18,000.

When is the latest a Keys voter can request a mail-in ballot? Such requests can be made online at keys-elections.org until Saturday, Aug. 8.

When does it need to be mailed back? Right away. Or it can be dropped off at any of the three elections offices in the Keys. There are vote-by-mail drop boxes at all early voting locations that are being watched by a poll worker, so voters can just drive by and drop their ballot. Who gets a ballot in August? Because the Aug. 18 election is a primary, voters from Stock Island through the north end of the county will not get a ballot if they are not registered as a Democrat or Republican. All Key West voters will get a ballot because the city’s mayor’s race is nonpartisan.

When is early voting? It has already started and runs through Saturday, Aug. 15.

As a nation, we have used our intellect to defy gravity and send men to the moon; we have used our ingenuity to rebuild after hurricanes and our compassion to lift our neighbors out of homelessness. We can use these same passions to overcome the challenges of COVID-19. Wield your power, wear a mask. Demonstrate your ingenuity and find creative ways to socialize at a distance. Show your compassion and protect the vulnerable of our community who may suffer severe illness and death if we allow the virus to spread to them. The virus is genetically programmed to spread from person to person if given the opportunity. Let’s deny the virus the opportunity to spread.

As your community’s physicians, we know that COVID-19 will not disappear on its own. Controlling this pandemic demands the unified action of each of us, applying the same scientific principles we practice every day in our healthcare settings.

Testing for COVID-19 has been rapidly evolving since the virus was first detected in the U.S. At one point, more than 100 different tests were in use and the federal government has been testing the tests, so to speak, looking for the most accurate results.

The latest type of test to hit the streets is an antigen test, and it delivers the fastest results — in less than an hour. However, many health care providers suggest backing it up with a diagnostic molecular test (called PCR), as it is considered the gold standard.

But the PCR test only detects current infections and can’t tell whether a patient has had COVID-19 in the past.

What type of test a patient might need is best determined with the help of a caregiver.

COVID-19 testing, by federal order, is supposed to be free — the consultation to determine whether testing is needed, administering the test, and receiving the results — for insured and uninsured patients. Insurance companies cover the cost for the insured, and the government pays for the uninsured. However, there are many details that could derail this situation — such as the type of test (PCR or rapid detection) requiring other tests prior to the COVID-19 test, being treated out of network, etc. Patients should ask about their financial responsibilities up front.

BOY BATTLING MIS-C RETURNS HOME MOM APPRECIATIVE OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT JIM McCARTHY

A

fter a little over two weeks in the hospital, the young Upper Keys boy diagnosed with MIS-C, a rare syndrome connected to COVID-19, is home.

On Aug. 2, Zane Wampler turned 9 years old. Two days later, he was released from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and traveled with his mom, Leah, and dad, Zack, back to their residence in Tavernier.

“We still have a lot of followups and visits with specialists, but now that he is able to take his medication by mouth, we were able to taper them down at home,” Leah wrote on her Facebook page on Aug. 4.

“As scary as it is for me to bring him home, we are over the moon excited to have our family all back together.”

Wampler said her son never expressed symptoms associated with COVID-19, and three swab tests came back negative. It was a positive antibodies test for COVID-19 that led doctors to believe young Zane has a syndrome found in children that’s linked to the illness.

Positive results from an antibody test show that the child’s immune system developed blood

proteins (antibodies) that fought the COVID-19 virus. The Mayo Clinic says this blood test is the only indication that the child was ever infected — meaning the child may have fought the infection without ever having shown signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

Still, some children with MISC are currently infected with the coronavirus, usually confirmed by detection of the virus on a swab taken from the nose or throat. Children with MIS-C need to be treated in a hospital and some in a pediatric intensive care unit.

Zane ultimately was taken, via ambulance by the request of his local doctors, to the children’s hospital in Miami. Between 20 and 30 doctors saw Zane as they all worked together to combat the syndrome.

Wampler says the prayers, love and support from her family, the tight-knit Keys community, old and new friends from all over the world have been felt and heard.

“We are so happy he’s home,” Wampler told the Weekly on Aug. 5 Ironically, Wampler says Zane was brought home from the hospital nine years ago on Aug. 4, 2011.

he November powerboat races in Key West are canceled.

“I received word from race organizers today that this year’s powerboat races are canceled,” Key West City Manager Greg Veliz told city commissioners at their Aug. 4 meeting.

The 2020 Race World Offshore Key West Championships had been scheduled for Nov. 8-15 at the city’s Truman Waterfront.

“Race World Offshore is incredibly saddened to cancel the 2020 Race World Offshore Key West Championships,” the event website states. “We have been closely monitoring the situation and after much consideration, have decided that this is what’s best for the offshore racing community ... as a precaution to protect our teams, fans, and the city of Key West. This is not a decision we made lightly, but the health and safety of our fans are our primary concern.

RWO is continuing to monitor and work with Clearwater officials.”

Next year’s Key West races are scheduled for Nov. 7-14, 2021.

Also at their Aug. 4 meeting, city commissioners voted unanimously to cancel all city events requiring a special event permit through 2020. Prior decisions had canceled events through Fantasy Fest in late October.

The latest decision will affect the Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11; the Key West Business Guild’s rescheduled Pride events Nov. 21 and 22; the Key West Triathlon on Dec. 5; the holiday tree and menorah lighting on Nov. 30 and the Christmas parade on Dec. 5.

“In all fairness to the city and event organizers, it was time for us to make a decision,” Veliz said. “Obviously, no one wants to forgo Veterans Day or the holiday events, but with the current landscape, it wouldn’t be responsible for us to plan to bring people together like this.”

Commissioner Sam Kaufman suggested perhaps Veterans Day can be recognized with something other than a parade. And Commissioner Clayton Lopez acknowledged that social distancing simply would not be possible at the popular Christmas parade.

The commission voted unanimously to cancel the events, and to prohibit further applications for special event permits from the city. Veliz pledged to continue to monitor the situation and consider potential safe alternatives for the holidays.

In other city news, the commission agreed to ask state transportation officials to make the temporary traffic light at U.S. 1 and College Road north on Stock Island a permanent one to better enable left turns. The temporary light has been installed during the Cow Key Bridge construction.

With the village now in control of the area, local officials are preparing to submit a master plan for the three small islands connecting Lower Matecumbe and Upper Matecumbe Keys.

During village council’s July 30 meeting, Public Works Director A.J. Engelmeyer discussed a list of items the village will look to include in its plan to FDOT. In a bid to control parking and provide more safety to bikers and pedestrians, the village will include plans to install barriers along the Fills, which spans from MM 77.5 to 79.8.

Village council received three potential options for fencing that included cable, timber with rope and guardrail. Engelmeyer told council members that a cable barrier would be a less intrusive and visible option. It would also be less expensive than other options with an estimated cost around $322,000.

Other notable items the village will look to include in its wish list to the state are public bathroom facilities for each parking location, a permanent boat ramp and a proposed no-swim zone in the launch area to prevent potential accidents. Vista lookouts and docks to peer out at the water will also be included in the plan for FDOT’s consideration.

“With this list, we’re going ahead and engineering on paper a master plan draft,” Engelmeyer said. “Then I’ll submit to FDOT for their review. From this list, we can actually move forward with projects. The installation of the barrier obviously is our No. 1 priority to get rid of cones and barriers and everything else we have out there.”

“It depends on the restrictions they give to us to install barriers,” Engelmeyer said. “We could possibly install quite a bit of it, but they’ll need access to the shoreline to be able to install rip rap and everything going to stabilize that (shoreline). We could potentially work with them and close (areas) off in phases and do certain areas that don’t require any access on their part.”

Vice Mayor Ken Davis asked if the village’s barrier project could be added to FDOT’s shoreline stabilization work. Engelmeyer said they could reach out to the contractor FDOT chooses to get a quote.

“That could make the Jersey barriers a possibility,” Davis said, adding he’d also like to see hedging in front of the barrier of choice.

Councilman Jim Mooney said the village should examine an adopta-parking area program that’s similar to that of an adopt-a-highway, as it would defray costs.

“If I wanted to pay for six grills or whatever that number worked out to be, it would be on me and not the taxpayers to clean up once a month,” he said. “I do believe people would step up, and in return, you’d get a plaque that says ‘sponsored by.’”

In April, village council approved a five-year sublease with FDOT to maintain the Fills. Mooney said the village set out to maintain and gain some stability at the Fills, while at the same time providing an experience for people to enjoy the heritage trail and scenic highway.

“Here’s a chance for us to be in charge for a change, not be behind the 8-ball,” he said. “This is our time to shine. It’s taken 22 years to get here.”

According to the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, some of the seeds were revealed to be mustard, cabbage, morning glory, sage, rosemary, etc.

Daryl Ida (Jervis) Stone, 1926-2020

I

n 1986, after nearly 50 years of studying and teaching dance, Daryl retired and moved to Key Largo, Florida. She had built a home there in 1976 with her husband Bill. The studio has continued on in her name and still thrives.

Daryl enjoyed her retirement with frequent overseas trips, visiting more than 50 countries. In Key Largo she volunteered at Pennekamp State Park and participated in Upper Keys Garden Club, Civic Club, and Wild Women on the Water. After hurricane Irma flooded the house in September 2017 she moved to Asheville, North Carolina and spent her remaining years there.

Daryl’s devotion to her first love, Bill Stone, was enthusiastically and romantically returned. Her commitment to her sons, Brad and Brent, knew few bounds. She unfailingly shared her love and, among many other gifts, instilled an invaluable sense of self-worth and confidence.

And to her many grandchildren, she will always be the family matriarch — the one to whom adventure, love and incredible Key lime pie will be connected.

Your impact far exceeds your time on this earth, Mom. There is most certainly mercy that your last difficult years have finally come to a close. Beyond that, though, many will continue to be influenced by your gifts – whether they knew you personally or through the imprint you passed on to those you directly influenced.

Humans aren’t the only Key West residents struggling to find long-term housing these days.

Bailey, Tango and Lola, the birds that have lived in the outdoor courtyard at New York Pasta Garden for up to 17 years, have been exiled by the condominium association that governs Duval Square.

The compound that stretches from Duval to Simonton streets houses first-floor businesses and second-floor residences, the majority of which are vacation rentals, said Chef Lea Fettis, who bought New York Pasta Garden in August 2019 with business partner Shukhrat Rakhimov. The men inherited the birds from the former owner, who died.

“Bailey, the red bird, is a greenwing macaw who’s lived here for 17 years,” Fettis said. “Tango, the red and blue macaw, has been here for eight years and Lola, the African gray, has been here more than four years. I have literally hundreds of photos from visitors with Lola. We’ve tried to work with the condominium association with this, but everything they do is secretive. They won’t even return my emails, but are constantly taking photos of all the businesses around here.”

Fettis received a letter on July 9 from the law firm that represents the condo board, informing him the birds are a violation of the restaurant’s lease, “even though we took over the restaurant ‘as-is,’” Fettis said. “I’ve never heard a single complaint from people, and we started taking the birds home at night rather than leaving them in the courtyard in case they’re too loud at night. But that wasn’t good enough. I’ve also offered to pay additional rent for use of the common area. But the birds are currently in exile.”

Fettis has met with Key West attorney Michael Halpern, and plans to answer the condo board’s letter with a lawsuit. “These condo boards, all over town and all over the country, are holding people ransom with their bully tactics and overreach,” Fettis said.

“Life is hard enough during this pandemic and the state of affairs in the world without having to worry about losing your business or your home for such frivolous reasons,” Fettis told the Keys Weekly. “Since the lockdown began, this condo association has threatened to revoke our lease on three separate occasions for doing things that have been standard in the restaurant for 30 years, such as not breaking down Sysco boxes in a timely fashion.

“I understand the concern, but threatening multiple people's livelihoods for such things in the midst of this pandemic is unconscionable. Especially when you haven't missed a rent payment.”

The July 9 letter from the board’s attorneys states that Fettis’ failure to remove the birds constitutes “a violation of your lease, which prohibits you from doing anything which constitutes a violation of the laws and requirements of any public authority and/ or annoys or inconveniences other persons occupying Duval Square….”

The birds remain in exile until the matter is settled by the courts.

hile facilities remain closed to visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic, bird rehabbers at the Wild Bird Center continue to stay busy tending to injured wings and limbs.

The Keys Weekly recently spoke with Jordan Budnik, executive director, about activities at the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, located at 93600 Overseas Highway, Tavernier and Mission Wild Bird Hospital, located at 92080 Overseas Highway, Tavernier.

The Covid-19 lockdown has been hard on businesses in our community.

How is the Bird Center holding up? As a nonprofit organization, we are solely funded by individual and foundational donations.

That being said, we feel the same financial pressure that many in our country are under right now. The hospital is still open to receiving patients and we are busy taking care of injured birds. The collisions with windows or cars, swallowed hooks and domestic cat attacks have not stopped. Wildlife still needs us and we still intend to answer that call.

Can people visit the sanctuary yet?

Not yet. The sanctuary is still closed to the public. Although it is outside, the boardwalk is narrow and social distancing cannot be guaranteed. Combine that with the local COVID case numbers and we feel it is best to remain closed for now. We are still caring for the approximately 100 non-releasable sanctuary animals behind the scenes. When we do reopen, we will make sure to post on our website, social media and in the Keys Weekly! Our official reopening date is to be determined. Private tours of the sanctuary for school groups can be scheduled upon request. This is limited to groups of 10 and under at a time and masks are mandatory.

Can people still bring sick and injured birds to you? Yes! So many members of the community believe that because we are closed to visitors, our rehabilitation hospital has stopped operating. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Our hospital has been even busier than usual for this time of year.

We have measures to keep people safe when they drop off birds at our hospital.

People are asked to first call our emergency line at 305-852-4486 ext.1 to give us patient information over the phone so that we can fill out paperwork ahead of time. Individuals dropping off an injured bird wait outside instead of coming inside the hospital, and masks are worn by staff at all times. We can also dispatch staff to go pick up a bird if you cannot come to us.

How are you handling the loss of donations to the sanctuary? Sanctuary donations are a large part of our annual income.

We have cut back on spending or pushed back projects that we wanted to accomplish this year. For example, our interns live on-site. That intern house needs improvements but that’s not happening right now. We also have medical cage improvements that are on hold, as are our hopes to secure a new rescue vehicle. We rely more on online fundraising, mailedin contributions, and foundations than we ever have before.

What can people do to help the Bird Center and other nonprofits? Give in any way that you can. Share social media posts or tell your friends and family about a nonprofit that you love. here’s one garden project that you should skip this summer: fertilizing.

As a resident of the Keys, you may be thinking “I haven’t used fertilizer in years — my yard is a bunch of rocks!”

And that may be true. But, maybe you live in a condo with nice landscaping or maybe you frequent a community park with a grassy field.

These places are likely using fertilizer. During South Florida’s rainy summer months, fertilizer is more likely to run off into waterways before plants can use it. It is a waste of time and money — and it creates pollution for the environment.

Fertilizers are rich in what are known as “nutrients,” like nitrogen and phosphorus. Plants need these nutrients to grow. But when too many nutrients are used, they can run off into the water, and create prime conditions for algae blooms.

Algae blooms can turn the water green, smell bad, and cause harm to people, wildlife, the environment and the economy of the Keys. Some recent research even suggests that excess nutrients may be exacerbating sargassum blooms.

Florida Bay is already feeling the stress from algae blooms. In 2015, about 22,000 acres of seagrass meadows died in the Bay after a drought, which likely helped feed algae blooms that appeared shortly thereafter. Recent studies have shown that nearby Biscayne Bay is at a tipping point for nutrient pollution. That is, Biscayne Bay could shift from a seagrass-dominated bay into an algae-dominated one, which would fundamentally alter the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the Bay. Not to mention, algae can have consequences for our coral reefs — too much algae can cloud the water column and affect the coral’s ability to survive.

We simply cannot afford to put our resources at risk. The Florida Keys supports more than 77,000 residents and approximately 5.5 million tourists — contributing to the $4.7 billion economy. (Office of National Marine Sanctuaries 2019; Key West Chamber of Commerce 2018.) Roughly 60 percent of our economy is tied to tourism activities such as

boating, fishing and diving. These industries rely on healthy ecosystems to thrive. Addressing nutrient pollution is an investment in the economy we’ve built.

While nutrient pollution can come from a variety of sources (including animal waste, sewage spills, decomposing plant matter and agricultural runoff), it can also come from fertilizer use. In fact, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary addresses algae blooms and nutrient pollution as threats to the marine sanctuary specifically in its Restoration Blueprint. Some municipalities have responded to this call to action. The Village of Islamorada has already joined 139 cities and 32 counties across the state that have passed fertilizer ordinances. This summer is the first that will be “fertilizer-free” within village limits in an effort to protect our water quality. In fact, the village is the only municipality in Monroe County that has taken this action to address fertilizer runoff.

Absent legislation, here are some fertilizing tips you can keep in mind to protect our waters: • Skip summertime fertilizer use from June through September.

• Avoid fertilizers with phosphorus in them — look for 0% phosphorus on the bag!

• Remember to go slow! Use fertilizers with 50% slow release nitrogen.

• Never apply fertilizers within 15 feet of a waterway or storm drain.

Boutique women’s treatment center in Key Largo specializes in trauma recovery TIFFANY DUONG

W

hen Dr. Laura Tanzini started Kinder in the Keys (KIK) Treatment Center in July 2018, she already had been in the trauma-therapy industry for 30 years.

After a vacation to the Keys, she ended up staying five months. She left before Hurricane Irma but felt the need to come back to the islands.

KIK was born and has been offering unique, integrated treatment approaches to health and wellness ever since.

“Trauma is anything that causes a loss or a grief for people,” Tanzini said.

Traumatic experiences can include getting a bad grade in school or the loss of a pet, to abuse, molestation or rape. It also can include natural disasters, like Hurricane Irma, and the aftermath of recovering and rebuilding, Tanzini said.

Even after traumatic events have ended, deep parts of the mind continue to respond to similar triggers, she said. Repressed feelings from the trauma can block new relationships and healthy behaviors and affect thinking and emotions.

Tanzini and the therapists and practitioners at KIK work to help clients resolve past traumas and remove the blocks those have created in various

areas of their lives. Through trauma resolution workshops that KIK specializes in, clients are given the opportunity to “rewrite past pain,” altering present and future choices and outcomes, the feature added.

KIK’s clients are adult women recovering from trauma and traumarelated disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD or eating, obsessive-compulsive and panic disorders.

The healing program focuses on renewal and developing necessary coping skills to deal with past traumas.

Clients can opt for an intensive outpatient program, partial hospitalization, short term residential (less than 30 days) and long term residential (longer than 30 days). Clients come from around the country (and locally too) and usually stay for 4 to 8 weeks, Tanzini said.

The program caters to the individual needs of each client.

“We do treatment plans for each person,” Tanzini said. “Everybody has

a different trauma, and they may need different therapies. Because we are small, we can do a lot of individualized treatment.

We practice all kinds of different modalities.”

KIK takes advantage of its location in the Keys to offer a full range of services and therapies, including dolphin therapy with resident dolphins at nearby Island Dolphin Care, service dogs and miniature horses that patients interact with, music and art therapy (sometimes from within the on-site pool), and outings into the community to local beaches, Key West and Shell World.

KIK also works with local dive shops and captains to take clients out for snorkeling on local reefs.

“We have a local painter who comes on hot days and sits in the water and helps our clients paint,” Tanzini added. “I love watching the women get strong balancing on paddle boards doing warrior poses. We also have two health practitioners who help them cook very good, healthy food — all organic, nonGMO.” She noted, “Above all, this is a place people can go to heal.”

The one thing KIK doesn’t offer is substance abuse treatment like 12-step programs. It’s not uncommon for those recovering from drug and alcohol abuse to also have gone through traumatic experiences before or during their addiction, but KIK recommends potential clients learn to manage and cope with their substance abuse before engaging in trauma work.

“Otherwise, it’s useless,” Tanzini said. “It can be a past issue, but it can’t be an active issue.”

Tanzini believes KIK is the only women-only trauma-treatment center in the country that doesn’t allow substance-abuse.

For many who have gone through traumas, 12-step-style programs are ineffective or inappropriate treatments, and no other center she is aware of offers this approach to trauma resolution. This also allows KIK to offer medicine management, which is prohibited at many addiction centers, Tanzini said.

Tanzini’s goal for all her clients is that they live happy, healthy lives free of panic attacks, abnormal depression, PTSD and flashbacks, she said. She also hopes that when something bad happens, they can fall back on the coping mechanisms they learned at KIK. KIK accepts insurance or private payments. A

special virtual meeting is set to consider the second reading of an ordinance that proposes to create a vessel exclusion zone north of Port Antigua and White Marlin Beach on Lower Matecumbe Key. Calls for a meeting solely to discuss the subject came after members of the public weren’t able to voice their views during a July 16 meeting of Islamorada Village Council.

Around 15 people were able to speak when the ordinance came up for consideration, but a Zoom capacity limit of about 100 people prevented others from joining in to speak. As a result, council members unanimously agreed to defer the issue to a future meeting, which is set for Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

Village officials say they have “significantly increased” the capacity so all public members can be heard. According to Rick Hoskins, Port Antigua resident, there were anywhere from 40 to 60 members wishing to speak who couldn’t join the July 16 meeting.

As for the proposal, Village Attorney Roget Bryan said the ordinance isn’t proposed to regulate any of the upland beach area along any portions of the swim area. Bryan said it’s purely regulating the navigable waters, waterward from the mean high water line. Per chapter 327 of Florida statutes, Bryan said the village has the authority to create certain boating-restricted areas, for the purposes of vessel safety.

“This is being designated as a public swim area, not a public bathing beach,” he said. “There is indeed a southern, or landward boundary from the area, and it is the mean high water line. That’s where it starts and goes waterward.”

Attorney Paul Savage spoke to council members on behalf of 29 local homeowners adjacent to the proposed swim zone, 27 in the Port Antigua community and two in the White Marlin Beach community. Savage said everyone understands the issue out on the water to be a serious problem. The proposal, however, isn’t the correct regulatory tool as it’ll create a public beach and draw more people and more trespassers.

“He (the village attorney) says it’s clearly marked that there’s an upland boundary when in fact it’s not,” he said. “It doesn’t say anything in the text that it’s an upland boundary. There’s a ragged, undefined edge along the beach which basically makes this a public beach. The village is formally and officially saying in its code and in its map that this is going to be a public beach.”

The ordinance passed unanimously on first reading.

Issues have continued off the beach where boaters anchor to enjoy a day on the water. Boat traffic and activity have increased in the area over the years, leading to noise, trashing and trespassing.

FINGER-LICKIN’ FUSION! New food truck serves up southern barbeque with an island twist

T

here’s a new food truck in town, and it’s mighty delicious.

Rick and Aileen Black realized one of their dreams when they opened up their new food truck, The Cookshack, just a few weeks ago.

“We’re really excited,” Aileen said. “This has been five years in the making. We’ve been wanting to do this a long time.”

Rick comes from a Tennessee family who owned barbecue restaurants in the South for 35 years. Their slow-smoked meats have won awards, cook-offs and titles such as “Best of the Best” in the county.

Talking about his family’s recipes, Rick laughed but refused to share: “I grew up smoking meats. There’s things we keep secret.”

Aileen has lived in the Keys since she was 11, loving island favorites like shrimp and fish tacos, mango, cilantro and anything fresh and tropical.

To fulfill Rick’s dream of cooking and sharing his food, the Blacks bought a food truck in November. Because of the pandemic, it’s taken them much longer to launch than they would have liked. That all changed in July when they got their permits to operate, and they had doors open at 7 a.m. the very next day. It’s a purple-and-pink-painted truck inspired by the Islamorada sunset, and it’s serving up some really innovative grub at Isla Marina on Snake Creek in Islamorada.

The food is a perfect mix of their backgrounds, with briskets, pulled pork and other smoked barbecue infused with a little South Florida mango barbecue sauce, tropical avocado ranch and fresh-made red cabbage slaw.

The menu changes constantly, based on what Rick feels like creating and cooking. The one thing that doesn’t change is that everything is made in-house and fresh.

Aileen said, “My husband is the actual chef. He loves to cook and share his dishes with people to see their reactions. We come up with cool ideas for food, and we can’t wait to share it with others.”

Rick describes his signature brisket as “mouth-watering delicious,” and Aileen opted for “so freaking awesome.” The pulled pork is a 20-hour smoked Boston butt topped with homemade slaw on a brioche bun with a tangy homemade barbecue sauce. Equally tantalizing is the blackened mahi sandwich, a Keys favorite, with their own Cookshack-twist: mango barbecue sauce and a tropical avocado ranch.

The duo plan to start sourcing their fish from local fishermen to help the community they love and to give their customers the very freshest, best fish. Rick is already dreaming up smoked meatloafs and cuban sandwiches with a twist — smoked pork instead of mojo.

Grateful, Aileen said they already had regulars calling them daily after just one week in business. The Cookshop partners with Isla Marina, on which it sits, and boaters who are coming in to gas up or buy bait can also pick up some fantastic fusion food to take with them. The marina also plans to add a back deck with a table and chairs where you can sit and enjoy your tropical barbecue while looking out on the water.

“It’s been amazing so far,” Aileen said. “We are so grateful. Friends have come out to support us and try our dishes, and then they come back! We’ve been busy, all by word of mouth.”

Thinking back on the permitting challenges during the pandemic, Aileen said that they were actually really glad to be launching right now.

“People are scared to dine in restaurants and be around people,” she said. “This is the perfect opportunity for people to come get food and not have to stay. It piggybacks off people getting delivery, and gives people options and a safe environment.”

Rick summed it up: “We’re happy to be here and happy to cook.

NEW DENGUE CASES REPORTED Upper Keys resident describes experience

he current dengue outbreak in the Upper Keys isn’t over, as the Florida Department of Health confirmed four new cases on Aug. 3.

The number of those who’ve come down with dengue fever has been on an uptick since mid-June, when a mosquito-borne illness advisory went into effect after a case of dengue was reported to the health department on June 19. It was only the second reported case in the Keys at that time.

With the four new cases, the total confirmed number has grown to 26.

As health officials continue to assess the outbreak, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District continues its intense mosquito control activities from Key Largo to Tavernier. The spraying continues while staff goes door-todoor to check for standing water — a prime breeding spot for mosquitoes that carry the disease.

“FKMCD is still extremely busy executing its disease response plan, which includes activity centered around source reduction, aerial mosquito treatments, ground mosquito treatments and mosquito surveillance,” said Chad Huff, the district’s public information officer. “On the ground, truck missions to kill adult mosquitoes in the target area are being conducted as necessary. The location of these spray missions are dictated by observations made by mosquito surveillance. FKMCD aerial crews are flying numerous missions via helicopter over Key Largo as needed to apply both larvicide and adulticide products.”

Health officials say the four latest cases were locally acquired. The individuals received medical treatment and are expected to make a full recovery, as are the other 22.

Dengue fever is not contagious; it is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Symptoms of dengue appear within 14 days of a bite by an infected mosquito.

Dengue can present as a severe flu-like illness

with severe muscle aches and pain, fever and sometimes a rash. Usually, there are no respiratory symptoms.

The Keys Weekly spoke with Upper Keys resident Tom Bartlett on his recent experience with dengue. Bartlett lives just north of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, between MM 102.5 and 103, with his wife, Sarah, and newborn. Bartlett said it was mid-June when people he knew started to get sick. Bartlett said the number of people he’d normally see out walking quickly subsided as they were inside, feeling unwell.

“No one knew it was dengue at that point in time,” he said. “Was it COVID or was it something else? There were some ladies in the neighborhood who were doing some research.

Looking at symptoms, it kind of started to allude to maybe dengue.”

When did you know that it was indeed dengue and not some other illness?

It wasn’t until later in June that there started to be confirmation, and people went and got a blood test. At that point it wasn’t like it was being reported. It was more word of mouth in that South Creek Village (located near MM 103, oceanside). Luckily, that neighborhood is well connected as far as communication goes.

Did you get sick? Did any of your family come down with it? I actually got it on the tail end when everyone was getting sick in mid-June. My girlfriend, Sarah, who just had the baby, she had it. It’s not confirmed, but everything I went through, she did. She had the fever. She had muscle aches. She was out for a week, but she was still taking care of the baby. We were trying to really nail down what happens with the baby now … is the baby OK? I was one of the last few to pick up dengue. It was easy dealing with it for me because I kind of had an idea what was going on when other people didn’t.

What was the experience like? Did it put you down for a period of time? The experience was similar for Sarah and me. I developed a fever on July 5. It was a mild fever of 99.5 to 100. I had no energy. When I say that,

every day I get out and ride my bike and go for a run. That day, I was like, ‘Man, I don't feel like doing anything.’ That’s when I realized, OK, let me take my temperature and see what’s going on. For the next two days, I developed a 101102 fever and muscle aches. But it was manageable. You can manage it with Tylenol. It felt like you had a mild flu. By day three and four, I was in bed. My body hurt from head to toe.

Did you have to go to the doctor? Did the health department reach out to you?

They did. That Monday, July 6, I went and got COVID-tested and tested for dengue. At that point, the health department called days later to do a questionnaire on where I'd been, what my activities were, my age and stuff like that.

Then, I actually emailed Dr. Mark Whiteside (medical director of the health department).

He actually called me to ask questions about my experience and what was going on. He’s been in the neighborhood multiple times. He’s kind of advising people through this and questioning to find out where it came from. People at the health department in Tallahassee have even called to interview us.

Have you seen mosquito control out and about? Yes, they’ve done a good job in my opinion. They’ve gone door-to-door. They’ve sprayed in our backyard multiple times. When all this was going on, they were basically coming through the neighborhood like a SWAT team.

It was Sarah and I putting our minds together and really every two hours doing an assessment on where we were and what we thought we needed to do, like if we needed to get more medical attention or something.

Because we weren’t exactly experienced with COVID. We were constantly checking the baby and checking each other. That’s really what it was. It was kind of sitting on edge to see what popped up next and making a decision. Luckily, it never got out of control or got too dramatic.

amela Connolly wants to teach the world to dance, and she’s found a way to do it virtually — at least for now.

“No one should sit on the sidelines, or stand against the wall watching while others dance,” said Connolly, an accomplished actress, dancer, television star, psychologist, author and owner of Key West’s new Pasíon Project boutique dance studio, 523 Southard St. (She’s also married to comedian extraordinaire Billy Connolly, but that’s a story for another day.)

Pasión Project offers private and group dance lessons and fitness classes for all ages and experience levels. The studio offers aerial arts, balance and movement classes, ballroom, swing and a wide variety of Latin dances.

“I am thrilled to support the dance aspiration of others and be able to offer this unique dance curriculum in Key West with such terrific, professional instructors,” said Connolly, who appeared on the original, British incarnation of “Dancing with the Stars” and did several skits on “Saturday Night Live.” “We are also the first dance studio to specialize specifically in presenting and teaching Lambada in the United States.”

At the helm of that class is Master Braz Dos Santos, “the world’s most celebrated Lambada dancer,” according to Connolly, and star of the international dance show, “Brazouka.” Since his relocation to Key West, dancers have traveled from around the world to attend his 50-hour certification courses for dance instructors.

“No one has two left feet,” Connolly said. “You just need the right teacher, and of course, a desire to dance, which I believe is inside all of us.”

The Pasión Project studio faculty members also include: Tybaldt Ulrich, Jade Whitley, Brad Meccia, Amber La Bomba, Jorge Enrique Valerp, Jeff Mumford, Taylor Tarn and Dr. Michelle Gibson.

Classes include Argentine tango, swing, Carolina shag, bachata, hustle, all ballroom styles, country line dance and country swing, Brazilian zouk, Lambada, salsa shines, salsa and more. The Pasíon Project studio is also a fully equipped aerial arts studio with stretch, flexibility and injury-prevention classes.

When the pandemic prevented Connolly from opening the studio as planned in May, she set to work converting the space into a state-of-the-art virtual dance studio to inspire amateur and professional dancers online via Zoom. Instructors are trained to use the technology to teach, to show themselves from the rear and to use cameras at foot level to show close-up shots of their feet. When the doors open for live, physically distanced classes, students can choose between live or virtual learning. Private lessons are available for those who would like to avoid public interaction and/or desire one-on-one instruction.

“Like most business owners viewing the future as uncertain, we will always retain a virtual element, including a library of dance instruction videos available 24 hours per day,” Connolly said. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Keys residents and visitors will enjoy and support this ‘Keys Strong’ local business.”

“MOONSHOT” LANDED CFK STUDENTS’ ‘NEPTUNE RISING’ WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION

T

he College of the Florida Keys’ 11-member student team won the “Moonshot Award” at the first-ever “Powering the Blue Economy” national Marine Energy Collegiate Competition. The project was announced as the winner at a virtual awards ceremony on July 23, which was originally scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. The contest, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, was created to encourage bright young minds to develop theoretical technology to power the emerging “blue economy,” a term that refers to the interplay of economic, social and ecological sustainability of the ocean.

“We are incredibly proud of these students and the impressive work they put forth,” said Jonathan Gueverra, CFK president. “This award is indicative of the quality of our institution, which is tied directly to the quality of our students, our graduates, our employees, and our relationship with industry partners.”

The Neptune Rising project conceptualizes an offshore marine aquaculture (fish farming) and power production operation. The 600 meter by 125 meter floating facility is designed to function in the waters of the Florida Current, some 35 kilometers (about 21 miles) due south of Key West.

Students in CFK’s engineering technology, marine science, aquaculture, and business programs collaborated over eight months on the project. They set out to address multiple ecological problems, including: climate change and ocean acidification caused by fossil fuel production; damages to the marine ecosystem caused by poorly-managed offshore aquaculture; and the growing need for sustainable global food production. Their work began with numerous group meetings on the Key West campus, but the pandemic forced them to use technology to complete the project online. Despite the challenges, the team fine-tuned operation details, engineered equipment, estimated energy and aquaculture production output and calculated financial projections. Their ultimate Neptune Rising proposal addresses each problem they set out to alleviate and with an initial estimated startup cost of $900 million, the operation would turn a profit of $15 billion after 30 years (the expected lifespan of the man-made offshore floating facility).

Neptune Rising is designed to harness multiple forms of marine renewable energy including: ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), hydrokinetic energy, offshore wind and offshore solar.

It would generate enough clean power to run the entire aquaculture operation and enough excess power to light up the entire Florida Keys and much of South Florida. The marine aquaculture component in Neptune Rising would allow the cultivation of multiple fish and valuable marine products like pearls in a single, integrated system where one species feeds off the waste of the other, exactly as in nature.

The cold, nutrient-rich waters from the OTEC would be used to grow phytoplankton, zooplankton and sardines, to feed the target species of bluefin tuna, the most valuable fish in the ocean. Waste from the tuna would cascade to lower levels in the system, providing energy to pearl oysters, seaweed, and corals. In turn, the oysters and seaweed filtering properties clean the ocean waters flowing through the system.

The tuna would be sold for human consumption while the pearls from the oysters would be used for the jewelry industry. The seaweed would be sold in the aquarium trade and to cattle farms as a methanereducing cattle feed. Finally, coral grown in Neptune Rising would be donated for local coral reef ecosystem restoration and sold in the aquarium trade.

The students virtually presented their Neptune Rising project in a 15-minute pitch and animated tour of their facility to judges on July 9.

The CFK team was the only state college in the competition, competing against 15 other research universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech and University of California Berkeley.

“This was an amazing opportunity for our students to compete against some of the brightest young minds in the country, while demonstrating to the marine renewable energy industry how to lower energy production costs by using what we call energy synergy, meaning a single floating platform for all kinds of energy and aquaculture production. The concept is simple, if you are going to pay to build a structure, then you should maximize the space to produce as much revenue as possible,” said Patrick Rice, CFK’s chief science and research officer and team advisor.

Rice plans to take the student team to show off their award-winning Neptune Rising project to industry leaders in marine renewable energy at the first-ever joint convention of the National Hydropower Association and the International Council on Ocean Energy in Washington, D.C. next year.

What KWHS teacher has had the most influence on you? I’ve had band class with Gary Hernandez every day for the past three years.

He has taught me strong leadership skills and lessons I can use throughout my life.

What class, so far, has best prepared you for life after high school? Band has prepared me most because of its team-building and leadership skills.

What was the biggest challenge of online learning for you during the pandemic? Spreading out my schoolwork was my biggest challenge.

I wanted to do everything in the morning rather than later in the day.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give incoming freshmen? Make friends, and be sure of those who are important to you.

What are your plans/goals after graduation? After high school, I

would like to hopefully travel and work during the summer break, and then go straight to college in the fall.

What three things would you like to have accomplished by your 10year high school reunion? I would like to have a house I built from the ground up, a successful job I’m happy in, and have traveled to at least three other countries.

Where do you get most of your news? Mostly from the television station CBS. What local, national or global issue concerns you most? The lack of equal access to health care nationally and globally concerns me the most.

Do you plan to make the Keys your permanent home after high school or college? I do not plan to make the Keys my permanent home after college. I would prefer to go somewhere with a lot of land, so I can have animals.

SCHOOL STARTS AUG. 19 FIRST FEW WEEKS, AT LEAST, WILL BE VIRTUAL

onroe County School students will return to school — virtually — on Wednesday,

Aug. 19.

The start date was negotiated between school district officials and the teachers union, United Teachers of Monroe. The later start date will give teachers some extra time to prepare for the school year,

which will start virtually for the first few weeks — at least until Sept. 11, officials said.

Teachers will report for planning and preparation beginning Thursday, Aug. 6.

This virtual start was decided upon with advice from the local health department due to the virus spread in the community, and the proximity of neighboring counties with very high

he granddaughter of Key Wester Hortense BurgohyEdwards has been selected as one of 20 high school graduates nationally to receive an inaugural scholarship financed by a $40 million donation by the cofounder of Netflix and his wife to the prestigious all-female Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Burgohy-Edwards’ granddaughter, Aliyah Webster, graduated in June with top-tier academic honors from Ocean Lakes High School Math and Science Academy in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is a recipient of the Dovey Johnson Roundtree Presidential Scholarship, which was funded by philanthropists Patty Quillin and her husband, Reed Hastings, chairman and CEO of Netflix. These billionaire donors have aligned their resources with social action by donating a total of $120 million to the historically black colleges Spelman and Morehouse, as well as to the United Negro College Fund. This gift is the largest-ever contribution by an individual to

virus counts. The district will periodically reevaluate these factors, with the first reevaluation period scheduled for Sept. 7-11.

“We are watching other districts that have made the decision to return to in-person learning to see how they do. One district in another state had to close a school the first day due to a significant exposure,” Superintendent Theresa Axford said, adding that she understands the true hardship this situation is causing many families.

The scholarship is named for one of Spelman’s most accomplished alumni.

As a result of this donation, over the next 10 years, 200 incoming first-year college students, including 2020 scholarship recipient Aliyah Webster, will be able to attend Spelman College with a full, four-year scholarship from Quillin and Hastings, who are committed to educational equity.

Webster, whose mother, Kim, is a native of Key West, graduated near the top of her class with a cumulative 4.42 GPA and will begin her freshman year at Spelman College this month. Webster plans to major in biochemistry and is committed to using her interdisciplinary STEM background to become a leader in the effort to develop cures for debilitating diseases. She is the daughter of proud parents Gary and Kim Webster, who reside in Virginia Beach.

he COVID-19 health crisis has pushed back the official start of high school football season to Aug. 24.

John Hughes, Key West High School junior varsity and varsity football coach, hopes that’s the only delay, but he’s preparing his team as best as he can manage for the continuing unknowns.

“Practices haven’t been football-related.

It’s just been strength and conditioning.

That’s all we’re allowed to do. Not even basic drills. We’ve been working in the weight room with three different groups, and we go to the stadium to do speed drills,” Hughes said.

Will Andrews, a varsity senior, said he’s had some trouble adjusting to the new requirements at practice. “When we’re lifting and running, we have to wear a mask, which makes it harder to breathe. Plus it gets in the way,” Andrews said.

Fifty miles up the road, Victor Segura, a junior at Marathon High School, is also melancholy about the pandemic’s possible impact on his season.

“It doesn’t feel real,” Segura said. “This was supposed to be my best season, and I was hoping to get college offers this year. I was ready to be a leader and still am.”

Hughes, the Key West coach, is dealing with similar sentiments.

“It’s tough keeping them motivated and believing there is going to be a season, especially the seniors, since they saw what happened in the spring last year,” Hughes said. “There is a chance we won’t play. That possibility is there, and it scares them.”

This whole situation is unprecedented, but Hughes has been doing plenty of research and has some modifications that could make it possible for students to play the ultimate contact sport safely: long sleeves, gloves, protective masks and wiping down the football between plays. Hughes said additional modifications are being discussed, but he hopes the game won’t get “too watered down.”

At the top of the Keys, Richard Russell, athletic director at Coral Shores High School, said the players’ and staff’s health and safety is the top priority, but so is that of their immediate and extended families.

Sarah Eckert, athletic director at Key West High School, also has been closely monitoring statewide and national discussions of high school athletics for the fall.

“We need to get over a lot of hurdles in order to have a season,” she said, adding that football could have a higher risk of spreading the virus than other sports with less contact and no huddles. “Between now and the tentative Aug. 24 start date, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) will hold another board meeting, and part of the discussion will be whether they need to postpone the start of football season even further.”

Adding to the complications are the varying scenarios in other counties, where most of the Keys’ competitors are located.

“We still have to coordinate with Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, as well as Lee and Carter counties on the west coast,” Hughes said. “If they’re not ready to start on the 24th, then we can’t start.”

Despite a potentially bleak outlook, KWHS varsity senior Max Ryan chose a positive perspective.

“I think these practices have been going pretty well. I’ve improved a lot over them, and I think it’s the same for others,” Ryan said, hoping for an eventual light at the end of the viral tunnel.

“It’s a very fluid situation,” Hughes said.

“There’s no game plan, we’re just going to have to adapt.”

ORIANA MENDEZ Hometown: Marathon College: University of Florida Major: Finance What are your plans for the fall semester? I’m moving back up to my apartment. … I can’t really get out of the lease, so that’s one of the reasons I’m going back.

SARAH KELLEY Hometown: Islamorada College: Full Sail University Major: Bachelor’s degree in creative writing

Are you concerned about the quality of education? All of my classes will be online, unfortunately. It’s hard to come up with a routine and stay on top of things if everything’s online, so it does make it more of a challenge.

What are your plans for the fall semester? I’m planning to live in Orlando while taking my online classes and simultaneously pursuing extracurricular activities outside of my primary schoolwork.

Are you concerned about the quality of education? I am not concerned about the quality of my education online due to the fact that Full Sail has formulated its own online curriculum, which is designed to hold the same quality of education as the in-person classes. All of my classes are online until January 2021.

Do you have any concerns about returning to campus? I do not have concerns about how COVID will affect my social life because I live off campus and the social scene at Full Sail does not parallel that of a traditional university. When I inevitably return to campus, I will most likely wear a face mask and reduce social interactions to maintain my health and the safety of others.

ZYBO MARCHETTI Hometown: Islamorada College: SUNY Maritime Major: Marine operations What are your plans for the fall semester? My plans for the fall semester are to go back to campus in New York City. All of my classes are in-person, none are online.

Do you have any concerns about returning to campus? I am definitely concerned about others going back to campus. I don’t know how my school will monitor or prevent the spread of the virus, but I will wear my mask in all public areas and use a lot of hand sanitizer.

Would you still choose to go back to campus regardless? I feel like I definitely would because you’re paying for it. My sorority is going to do mostly virtual events, especially for recruitment. I don’t want to miss out on the college experience. We only get four years and everybody says it goes by quick. So, I’m trying to get the most out of it.

Do you have any concerns about how COVID-19 will affect social life on campus? I’m definitely worried about people or myself catching COVID, but I feel like it’s a part of life now. You can protect yourselves with masks and take the necessary precautions. It should all be OK, I think.

(Embry-Riddle) has been rolling with the in-person idea from the start.

Do you have any concerns about returning to campus? I think in-person classes have an inherent risk, but I don’t do great with online classes, so I’m okay with it. Online would be good, but I couldn’t take a full 16 credits.

Do you have any concerns about how COVID-19 will affect social life on campus? I feel like people will spread COVID after being on campus for a few weeks and we’ll be sent back home. I’m just going to sit in my dorm because I have no desire to further expose myself. I’m going to wear a mask, keep my hand sanitizer on me always, be careful about touching surfaces, and try my best to keep my distance from people.

BLAKE WILSON Hometown: Key West College: Bucknell University Major: Political science What are your plans for the fall semester? We resume classes mid-August and we will be there until the start of Thanksgiving break. Our final exams are remote so we will have online instruction for about a week after Thanksgiving, followed by the online exams.

Are you concerned about the quality of education? If we get sent home again, I will have concerns about my education.

Finishing up the year online was really difficult for me. My school didn’t offer any online classes prior to being forced to, so it was new for everyone on campus — including professors. It’s hard to maintain the difficult course material without that personal connection.

Do you have any concerns about returning to campus? I am not extremely concerned about going back, given the precautions the school is taking. We have two rounds of mandatory testing before we go back to school, and then once we arrive will be tested biweekly. They are really determined to keep us on campus and healthy.

Do you have plans to minimize the risk of catching COVID-19? I think the precautions my university is taking are going to help a lot. I’m hoping if we all follow the guidelines, we can return to somewhat of a normal college lifestyle. This is definitely not something I ever expected to experience in my lifetime. It’s now more than ever we need to function with unity.

KINGSTON YOUNG Hometown: Key West College: University of Florida Major: Computer science engineering Kingston Young will not be returning to campus in the fall. “It was a really hard decision to make, but for me personally, it didn’t make much sense to return right away.” He said he plans to return to campus once the virus rates in Florida stabilize.

Are you concerned about the quality of education? I’m definitely concerned. I will be taking some very important classes for my major this upcoming semester, and while I am sad that I will not receive the same immersive experience that UF gave me my freshman year, I feel very fortunate to be in a major that can easily be taught online.

Do you have any concerns about going back to campus? I am pretty pessimistic about the reopening of campus. I don’t see a scenario where the virus could be contained in Gainesville. For the most part, I am concerned for the older professors returning to campus as well as the parents of some students who will possibly be exposed to the virus.

Do you have any concerns about how COVID-19 will affect social life on campus? Right now, I am involved with research in the computer science department with my mentor, Dr. Ragan, and I will miss the running club as well as finding a fun filmmaking club to join. I’m just hoping this is the first and last semester of this disaster. I miss normal school too much to go through another COVID-filled semester.

he College of the Florida Keys recently accepted its largest-ever nursing class, crediting the pandemic for much of the new and renewed interest in nursing as a vocation.

“Nurses are heroes and their jobs are pandemic- and recessionproof,” said Carla Fry, the college’s director of nursing.

“Of course, we also credit our solid reputation, with a better-thanaverage pass rate for a registered nursing license, and program expansions that now include a bachelor’s degree,” added Amber Ernst-Leonard, spokeswoman for the college.

The school’s nursing department interviewed 147 applicants and accepted 97 for its largest class so far. There are 53 nursing students in Key West and 44 in the Upper Keys, and for many, this is their first foray into college, ErnstLeonard said.

“Those students won’t start their actual nursing courses until spring, but they are indeed accepted in the major,” Fry said. “We typically start with 30 to 40 nursing applicants and accepted students.

With 146 applicants in the nursing program this semester, the fall class is richly diverse and highly qualified.”

Classes, labs and clinicals will be virtual for the fall in the interest of safety and out of respect for the school’s clinical partners, who are

exhausted after working long hours in these troubling times, Fry said.

“I have many years of experience running virtual programming and the faculty are well-prepared,” she said. “We will use enhanced, interactive digital technology to simulate the patient/provider interaction and develop critical thinking.

Though students will be conducting skills and clinical experiences from home, they will be dressed in their scrubs and attending video conferences before and after each lesson with their instructors. Demonstration of clinical competence and skills mastery will be attained through use of virtual case studies.”

Students also will video themselves performing various essential tactile skills.

“We are going to incorporate patient actors for the first time as well, particularly for students to practice collecting health histories,” Fry said. “New nursing students will be assigned a peer mentor as well as a college adviser so they have a touchstone and feel supported.

Personal connections and social interaction are extremely important, and we must prepare our next generation of nurses for the challenges that lie ahead. Nurses are innovators by nature. They have to be. So adapting to a rapidly changing environment is not foreign to any of us.

Our talented, experienced nursing faculty are poised and ready for an amazing fall semester.”

ey West is no stranger to marquee celebrities. For decades, American presidents, writers, musicians and actors have sought refuge within the island’s vibrant landscape and iconic culture.

But when one of the world’s most recognized A-list actors sets up shop along the city’s Historic Seaport, even an island that prides itself on having immunity to starstruck nostalgia is now buzzing about the arrival of Mark Wahlberg.

To be fair, it’s not just Mark Wahlberg who’s behind the family’s newest restaurant location in Key West, which also marks their 46th Wahlburgers on the globe. Chef Paul Wahlberg is typically credited with ownership of the casual burger and bar restaurant alongside Mark and their notable brother Donnie, who has forged his own celebrity path for over four decades. The brothers also captivated American audiences for 10 seasons with A&E’s hit television series aptly titled “Wahlburgers.”

But it is Mark who is a celebrity among celebrities. He is an international phenomenon, from his early days as a model and hip hop star, to one of the most celebrated actors and respected producers in the industry.

Aside from film, he has launched an array of successful business ventures, while earning the endearing reputation as a committed husband, father and philanthropist.

As the Wahlburgers name is drawn into the fabric of Key West dining experiences, the Keys Weekly caught up with Mark to discuss everything from having his nails painted by his daughter to the dawn of a New England Patriots era without Tom Brady.

Why is Key West an important destination for Wahlburgers and how does it fit with the brand’s vision? We’re always looking for locations that align with our key brand pillars — food, family and fun. Key West is the perfect location for bringing a top-notch experience to life for our guests with those key elements in mind.

What should Key West and the Keys know about Wahlburgers and what makes it unique or different from other casual dining locales and bars (and possibly other Wahlburgers locations)? Having the opportunity to open a Wahlburgers at the boardwalk of the world-renowned Historic Key West Seaport is pretty special. We love the relaxed yet vibrant culture of Key West and the opportunity it gave us to play with dishes that have a local flare. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone through the doors and becoming a part of this community.

What are your personal favorites at the restaurant? What’s a hidden secret? My notso-secret favorite (because it says so on the menu) is the plant-based Impossible Burger.

The burger itself is incredible because it really tastes like beef. And my brother Paul has made it special for Wahlburgers, adding some heat by topping it with chili spiced tomatoes.

Really everything is delicious and add Wahl Sauce to just about anything on the menu and you’ve just taken your meal up a few notches.

How would you describe Wahlburgers today and how has it evolved from you and your brother’s original vision? If you ask Paul, his vision was to have one location. But we saw the potential for something so much bigger.

At 46 locations with the opening of Key West, it’s become a bit of a phenomenon. You look at the comments on our social media pages and people all over the world are asking us to bring one to their city or neighborhood. But it’s always incredibly important to us that we connect with that local community and make sure we’re adding value.

As a father, what does the restaurant have to offer to families? Has your family (and brothers’ families) influenced any of the elements of the restaurant? Family has had a huge influence on the restaurant and the menu. Paul has recreated some of the recipes my parents would make for us growing up with a chef-inspired twist. My Mom’s macaroni salad recipe is even on the menu. For us, the three key pillars are food, family and fun — we should always be delivering in those areas. Not to mention, Key West is the ultimate vacation spot for families, and our waterfront patio is an awesome location to make memories with yours.

You have an array of locations, but how unique is the Key West location in relation to the historic significance of the building and waterfront? It’s pretty unique and I think the team there has done an incredible job making sure it fits in with the area. The outdoor bar is a spot you could belly up to and really take in the beauty of Key West while enjoying a delicious cocktail and fish tacos — and that’s unique to this location.

If you could go incognito in Key West, what would your perfect day look like? No doubt I would have to get out on the water. Spending time with friends or family just relaxing and being off the clock.

Do you ever see yourself spending more time in Key West? We know you are a fitness fanatic, but what other Key West-themed activities do you enjoy? (Golf, fishing, boating, etc.) I love to golf and do a lot of it when I’m not working. Definitely need to hit up the course and then spend the afternoon out on the boat.

What current projects can you tell us about right now, whether it be an upcoming film, business project or other ventures? I’m currently filming a movie in Berlin and also launched an apparel line, MUNICIPAL, just a few weeks ago. Always have a few projects in the works.

We have to ask, because Key West has a large contingent of Boston sports fans.

What is your prediction for the Patriots in the upcoming season and what word(s) will come to mind when you first see Brady in a Bucs uniform? Oh man, it’s going to be weird to see him in anything but Patriots gear at first, but he gave us New England fans so many incredible years. I wish him the best of luck in this next chapter. We’ll miss him, but I think we are in good hands with Cam coming onto the team, and the talent across the team runs deep.

Looking forward to seeing how things play out for them this season.

You are one of the most recognizable figures on the planet, with a career spanning from successful musician to producer to blockbuster actor. However, you are known as one of the most humble guys in the business. With so many monumental accomplishments, what do you want your legacy to be on this planet? At the end of the day, I really want to be remembered as a great father and a great husband. My family is what is most important, and they keep me grounded.

You’ve broken the mold and proven that an A-list celebrity can be a model husband and father. What is the secret to balancing the demands of your career and your family? It’s important to me to carve out time in my week to spend quality time with my family, whether that’s date night with my wife, playing basketball with my boys or even letting my youngest daughter paint my nails (yes, that happened in quarantine).

Do you ever watch your own movies? If so, which one do you go back and watch the most? And what other men and women in the business do you enjoy and respect the most? I can’t say I watch my own movies very often, but “The Fighter” is one I’m personally very proud of. There are so many incredibly talented men and women in the business that I’m a fan of – Octavia Spencer and Peter Berg are excellent, just to name a few!

Do you think we’ll ever see a Wahlberg film based here in Key West? You never know. It’s a beautiful spot and I certainly wouldn’t say no to spending a little extra time down here.

Finally, your career has encompassed several generations and different genres (from your music, an assortment of movies, producing “Entourage” and so on). What is the most cliché character or role that some fan yells at you in an airport or restaurant?

Any that make you cringe, or some that you love? I’ve been so blessed to work on so many great projects with a ton of talented people.

People love to ask me about ”Boogie Nights,” and they like to repeat lines from Ted — the white trash names scene is a classic.

ill and Kim Geary knew a visit to the new Wahlburgers restaurant in Key West was a “must-do” as soon as they realized it was scheduled to open in the Southernmost City.

Their son Robby, a 9-year-old super-fan from Tampa, who “idolizes Mark Wahlberg,” wanted to share a picture he drew of Wahlberg with the staff at the new Key West restaurant.

“We had recently been to the Orlando location and it was closed,” Robby’s mother, Kim Geary, said.

“Robby was heartbroken, so when he saw there was a Key West location opening, we knew we had to go.”

The Key West staff added them as honored guests to the location’s inviteonly opening.

“Robby immediately showed Sima (Sima Sayyad is a Wahlburgers trainer from Frisco, Texas) the picture he drew of Mark and said how much he loves the ‘Wahlburgers’ show,” Kim Geary said.

Sayyad graciously introduced the Geary family to Jim Oboyski, Wahlburgers vice president of operations, who also saw Robby’s drawing.

“I noticed Jim quietly walk away on his phone, saying, ‘Hey boss,’” said Kim. “Less than a minute later, Jim was handing the phone to Robby with Mark Walhberg live on FaceTime.”

Immediately, Robby was in shock when he saw his role model, Wahlberg, live on the phone. Although Wahlberg was filming a new movie in Germany, he spent more than five minutes talking with one of his youngest fans — even giving Robby a tour of his hotel room in Berlin.

“We talked about Tom Brady going to the Bucs (Robby’s favorite team) and he told me he was shooting a movie in Berlin,” said Robby. “I told him how I watch his TV show all the time and I asked him about coming to Tampa to see Brady play.”

While it’s unclear whether Robby and Wahlberg will cross paths again, Kim Geary says her son was “in heaven” after speaking with his favorite star and it was “a memory

he will never forget.”

Robby has already told his buddies at his local rec center all about his celebrity encounter. He said his favorite Wahlberg film remains “Daddy’s Home 2” with co-star Will Ferrell. When asked what Robby would like to tell Mark Wahlberg about the star’s incredible gesture, Robby paused and said, “I would just tell him I hope to meet him in person one day and that he is my favorite.”

After hearing about the star’s enormous heart and gracious appreciation for his young fan, it’s hard to imagine Wahlberg not being on anyone’s favorite list for years to come.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE REPORTS NO MAJOR VIOLATIONS DURING MINI-SEASON

L

obster mini-season came and went in the Florida Keys with no major violations, accidents or injuries, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Still, the office made more stops, arrests and citations than a year ago.

In total, sheriff’s deputies conducted more than 780 vessel stops and resource checks on water and land in Monroe County. That’s up from the 597 stops and inspections deputies made during the 2019 mini-season.

Five arrests were made during the two-day season — up from the three made by deputies last year. Forty-nine citations were issued by the sheriff’s office, many for possession of undersized lobster or over-the-bag limits.

That’s slightly up from the 40 notices issued last year for court appearances for undersized and over-the-bag limit violations.

Among the violations seen by deputies this year, a South Carolina man was cited for possessing a queen conch, a protected species. A Maryland man was issued a notice to appear in court as he was found to be in possession of three undersized mangrove snapper. A total of 166 warnings were issued.

Eight sheriff’s boats were used, including one unmarked vessel and four Yamaha WaveRunners, which are donated for use every year to the Sheriff’s Office by Riva Motorsports & Marine of the Keys in Key Largo. The OH-58 helicopter and special land-based details of deputies to check bridges, canals and right-ofways, were all deployed by Sheriff Rick Ramsay for the 2020 mini-season.

“I wanted a strong presence out there this year on air, land and water,” Ramsay said.

“The helicopter is a great tool as it provides an effective deterrence to law breakers as well as being at the ready for search and rescue missions. We employed a very large, multipronged approach and the figures reflect that.”

Data provided by the sheriff’s office doesn’t include figures from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, Key West Police Department, Key Colony Beach Police, Florida Highway Patrol or the U.S. Coast Guard.

Renter on Key Largo issued court notice

O

n July 29 at about 08:30 p.m., investigator Chris Mattson of the FWC received information that renters at Landings of Largo (located on Key Largo) had large specimens of staghorn coral drying out on their balcony. Mattson and officer Brett Swenson of the FWC went to investigate. They found a man named Christopher Curlee of North Carolina had the coral.

Mattson contacted Lt. Josh Peters of the Coral Trafficking Task Force, a partnership between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida International University (FIU). Photographs of the coral were sent to the task force. Cristina M Gomes, assistant director of the Tropical Conservation Institute, Institute of Environment, and Robert Tomasetti of the Department of Biological Sciences of FIU positively identified the coral as Acropora Cervicornis (Staghorn Coral). This species is protected under the Endangered Species Act and is unlawful to possess.

Curlee was issued one notice to appear for violating the Endangered Species Act. The staghorn coral was seized for genetic testing by the task force to determine which specific reef of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary it was harvested from, due to the lack of genetic diversity left in this endangered species.

FWC MAKES CASE IN TAVERNIER FOR ILLEGAL LOBSTER HARVEST

n July 29 at about 12:30 p.m., Lt. Joshua Peters of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was on water patrol in uniform on an unmarked vessel equipped with blue lights and siren. He was patrolling Key Haven Basin, inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

He saw two vessels at anchor atop a known and previously documented site of artificial habitat. This site was thoroughly documented with photographs and video during Operation “Bugging Out.” He approached the vessels and witnessed several occupants from both vessels actively harvesting Florida spiny lobster from the artificial habitat.

Peters ordered everyone in the water back to their respective vessels and conducted a marine fisheries inspection.

The inspection revealed that the two vessels were owned and operated by Coastal Outfitters Inc. of Tavernier. In total they had 11 paid passengers among the two boats, eight of whom were actively harvesting from the artificial habitat. The captains were identified as Donald Wayne Webb Jr. of Tavernier and Thomas Salvatore Giamo of Homestead. Giamo did not have a valid

USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with him at the time of the boarding. He told Peters he had forgotten it. On July 31, Peters contacted USCG Sector Key West and verified Giamo does not have a Merchant Mariner Credential.

Interviews of the harvesters/occupants were conducted in which they admitted that all of the lobsters on board the two vessels were harvested from this artificial habitat.

They said they had no idea it was illegal to harvest lobster from artificial habitat and that they had booked a charter to take them on a lawful trip because they were not local and did not know all of the rules and regulations. Because they were harvesting lobster from artificial habitat under the direction of Giamo and Webb, the two captains were given notices to appear for misdemeanor violations of harvesting lobster from artificial habitat.

The two vessels were in possession of 39 lobsters, all of which were harvested from artificial habitat. The case will be forwarded to a Coast Guard investigator with regard to Giamo conducting charters without the appropriate Merchant Mariner Credentials.

Get scary with scarecrow contest The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden kicks off its second annual Scarecrows in the Forest event with a call to students, community amateur artists, not-for-profits and business/creative professionals to create their own scarecrows for display in the garden. Cash prizes will be awarded with ‘Best in Show’ chosen by garden visitors.

All Scarecrow entries will be on display from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30. Scarecrow creators are encouraged to use natural or recycled materials.

There will be three entry categories: 1) School age individuals or groups; 2) Not-for-profit groups and 3) Business/creative professionals and amateur individuals. Cash prizes will be awarded of $100, $50 and $25 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. A Best in Show $100 prize will be chosen by garden visitors. Registration is through Saturday, Aug. 15. ‘Community Wins’ replaces Royal Fantasy Fest campaign The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) has granted $20,000 to launch the new Community Wins initiative supporting emergency housing assistance in the Keys, thanks to a matching gift from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation. CFFK is managing the new Community Wins Fund that will benefit residents served by four Keys health and human services nonprofits. CFFK’s challenge grant of $10,000 to Community Wins was

immediately matched by a $10,000 gift from the Knight Foundation.

“We’re thrilled the very caring Knight Foundation accepted our challenge and agreed to unite with us in helping our residents in most need,” said Jennifer McComb, president and CEO of the Community Foundation.

“Community Wins is a win-win-win for our workers who are unemployed or underemployed right now, landlords who have invested in workforce housing, and compassionate donors who are able to help keep our workforce here in the Keys.”

Community Wins, created by A.H. of Monroe County to replace its annual royal campaign for the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest this year, will be split equally among A.H. Monroe, Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, The Sister Season Fund, and Samuel’s House.

Funding will be used for Keys residents in dire need of housing assistance due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CFFK and the charitable nonprofits hope those who can will join other individuals in assisting with urgent housing needs. Every donation counts, no matter the dollar amount. Cracked Conch Café celebrates 40 years

(This column is the first in a hopefully semi-regular series about Keys places that have stayed mostly the same as things have changed all around them.

After Royal Castle folded, it turned into a Chinese place called Kam Sum, and then morphed into Surf and Turf. They all failed, and by 1979, the site had been vacant two-and-a-half years.

On Jan. 15, 1980, the Cracked Conch Café opened in that very location. Sombrero Resort’s Bill King was their first customer. And ever since, the Conch has remained open every day — only closing seven days out of the restaurant’s more than 40 years in business. “Five of those days were right after Hurricane Irma,” Joe says.

“Strangely enough, we still had a landline. People were lined up down the bar and outside the restaurant just to be able to call and let families know they were all right.”

Through all the other storms, the Conch remained open. “Sometimes we’d have to close for a bit if water got a little too high,” Joe remembers. “I forget which storm, but after one hurricane, we were the only place in town open for five days.”

The Cracked Conch has witnessed a good bit of Keys history. Joe also remembers the crazy days in the midst of the Mariel Boatlift. “There were people in here with briefcases filled with cash, tens of thousands of dollars,” Joe says. “They were buying passage for their family members in Cuba from local captains.” Crazy days, indeed.

The secret of Joe’s success at the Conch has to start with consistency.

They’re always open, and the food is always good. I first ate there in 1984, loving their Cracked Conch Café sandwich at first bite. The conch is so good … but there’s a lot more to the restaurant than just the tasty mollusk.

The Conch is a great breakfast place (breakfast served until 4 p.m.).

It’s a great lunch place. And it’s a great dinner-and-drinks place as well. “We got our full liquor license back in ’86,” Joe recalls. “After that, we were open every day until midnight. And we used to do our best business between 10 p.m. and midnight after all the other places closed. They just sent them here.”

These days, the Cracked Conch closes at a civilized 9 p.m. About 20 years ago, Joe revived the breakfasts he left out for a few years after getting the full liquor license. And sometime after that, Joe broke down and enclosed and air-conditioned the interior.

But even in the summer, the Flying Iguana patio is still comfortable and popular.

No matter the time of day, conch is always on the menu. From the Conch Omelet and the Conch Benedict for breakfast, to the Cracked Conch sandwich and appetizers as well as two different conch chowders, to multiple tasty conch specialties for dinner, a conch-loving diner just can’t go wrong.

There are plenty of other options for those who may not enjoy conch as much as I do.

Locals and visitors have raved about the Conch for decades, as in this online review: “I just wanted to let you know that without question, your Cracked Conch rivals the finest I’ve ever eaten. I’ve NEVER had better anywhere in the country. I’ve enjoyed conch on many Caribbean islands & none were superior to yours.”

Joe’s staff plays a big part in keeping the Conch a favorite of locals and visitors. As Joe relates, “We’ve had so many great staff members … cooks that have worked 30-35 years. And we’ve had waitstaff that have worked here, gone and raised a family, and have come back after the kids were grown!”

It’s good to know that throughout the decades of changes we’ve seen in the islands, the hammers still beat tenderness into the conch at the Cracked Conch Café in Marathon. The Conch is one of the places where you can go and still experience the Keys of yesteryear. For those of us who have been here forever and seen the changes, it’s just really good to have a place where nothing much has changed.
