A

village-sponsored program to test 400-plus residents who want to be swabbed passed by a 4-to-1 vote during Islamorada council’s May 7 virtual meeting.

A contract between the village and Dr. Miguel Diaz’s office in Tavernier is still pending to initiate the program. Insurance will pay for testing of all village staff — meaning no additional cost to taxpayers. Firefighters and EMS are being tested through a University of Miami study.

Council approved allocating $50,000 for some 475 tests through Diaz’s office for village residents. Details are still being finalized, but the village would prioritize seniors and at-risk residents who want to make an appointment to be given the test.

Village residents who don’t have symptoms, and don’t have insurance or means, would be able to get tested.

Diaz recommended the village have its residents obtain the RTPCR (real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) test. PCR tests are used to detect the presence of an antigen directly, rather than the presence of the body’s immune response, or antibodies.

With antibody testing, Diaz said, there’s no way to correlate directly with COVID-19.

“The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) pointed out that some antibody tests are being done, and people need to understand the limitation of test results,” he said. “With antibody testing, it does not tell me strain. If I have a positive PCR, it tells me the patient has COVID-19.”

cases in the village since March 20 when Monroe County had its first positive case.

Testing of the public is underway in Key West through One Clean Island, while residents in Marathon who have symptoms can get tested through CHI by appointment.

With areas in the Keys beginning to test residents, Mayor Mike Forster acknowledged the village should initiate its own testing. Forster brought the testing subject before the council following resolution approvals.

Members discussed and debated the matter for more than an hour.

“Everything that our council has been taught and learned, everything is done by data,” Forster said. “It’s all data-related. When you test 1% of your population, it’s hard for me to say it’s data-related in what we’re doing. I think it’s time we step to the plate and we do testing ourselves.”

Not all were on board with the idea of spending village funds for testing of an individual, who could travel somewhere and contract the virus the next day.

“I understand staff can get tested, they have insurance,” said councilman Chris Sante, who voted against the testing. “I have an issue

with employees who go home every single night and get exposed to people wherever they live and come back. It (PCR testing) does nothing to protect us or give us base numbers.

It’s gonna be a Miami case or a Big Pine case.”

Councilwoman Deb Gillis, who advocated for more discussion on antibody testing, said the village should spend its money wisely.

Diaz said the process includes collecting the test, collecting data and providing info to the patient and health department. Turnaround time on results is 24 to 48 hours, Diaz said.

“I think it’s basic we need to protect our own village staff to begin with ... then the elderly,” said Vice Mayor Ken Davis.

Councilman Jim Mooney said the job is to take care of village residents.

“If we stick to that, we’ll accomplish what we need in the end,” he said.

Once a contract is signed, more information will be presented to the public on how to go about getting tested.

ANOTHER ROUND OF TESTING UNDERWAY

RESULTS AT NURSING FACILITY ‘INCONCLUSIVE’ JIM McCARTHY

A

number of COVID-19 tests administered to residents and staff at Crystal Health & Rehab Center in early May have been deemed inconclusive, nursing home officials have been told. Now. family members will have to wait even longer to find out whether their loved ones inside the Upper Keys facility tested positive.

Emerald Healthcare, which runs the long-term care facility, told the Weekly on the morning of May 11 that it received assistance from the state health department, National Guard and Veterans Affairs to conduct a round of testing on every resident and employee after a speech pathologist tested positive last week.

Some 150 tests were performed May 2 on residents and staff at the nursing home, and sent to a commercial lab.

As of May 12, 11 residents and three employees have tested positive. Emerald Health told the Weekly on May 11 that 25 test results received back were negative.

With test results coming back inconclusive, another round of testing on those residents began immediately.

“The facility has communicated all of this information to the families of our residents and continues to stay in contact with the family members and loved ones,” said Ira Chafetz of Emerald Health.

“Aside from the families’ ability to call the facility whenever they choose, the facility has designated staff to conduct two to three general update phone calls a week to every single family member.”

For family members like Jennifer Baker, May 10 marked day nine of getting no information regarding test results of loved ones, including her 30-year-old daughter, Brittany. Baker and a number of mothers, daughters and sons stood outside the facility on the afternoon of May 10, holding signs and seeking information in a peaceful manner. An employee called the sheriff’s office to remove the group of about 15 from the property.

Family members left without answers.

Attempts to obtain information have yielded little to no results the past few weeks, Baker said. She’s reached out to the facility’s executive director, Ruth Robinson, 15 times since mid-March to no avail.

“It’s terrifying for all of us,” Baker said.

On May 11, however, Baker received

test results on her daughter. They were inconclusive.

Baker said Brittany’s doctor was able to enter the facility and perform a private COVID test.

“Hopefully we’ll have the results in four or five days,” she said.

Doug Tolbert’s father has lived at the facility for four years. The only information Tolbert has received recently is that a test came back inconclusive. Tolbert, too, has had issues reaching nursing home staff in past weeks.

“If you get somebody on the phone, the calls drop,” he said.

Tolbert said his wife spoke with his father recently.

“He sounds good and seems to be as good as normal,” he said. “The thing that worries us both is he’s very ambulatory … he wanders the facility. What are they doing to prevent that?”

Pilar Duenas received information from staff late last week that her 87-yearold mother was among the 11 who tested positive for COVID-19. Duenas also tried to contact the facility several times once she heard that an employee at the facility tested positive. Duenas learned of her mother’s test result Saturday morning.

“She’s going to kick this,” Duenas said. “She’s spent a whole week with pneumonia and COVID-19.”

The nursing home said it has designated a separate unit in the facility as a COVID unit where positive residents are isolated. Staff assigned to the COVID unit work nowhere else in the facility. The unit is completely blocked off and sealed from the rest of the facility, Chafetz said.

Chafetz told the Weekly that residents at the facility are constantly being monitored for signs and symptoms.

The facility said it is also assuring their psychological well-being and that safety is being met at the highest level.

Communal dining, communal activities and communal therapy have all been suspended since the national outbreak began, and “we continue to ensure those services are provided on an individual basis,” Chafetz said.

“Over the last few months, we have prepared and developed in-depth policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well being of our residents and staff,” Chafetz said. “We have followed the guidelines of the CDC and CMS every step of the way and we’re in constant communication with AHCA and DOH. We

were screening and checking every person who walked into the facility 24 hours a day for temperatures, signs and symptoms and we continue to do so.

“We know this is a scary time and a very difficult time for our residents, their loved ones, and the community,” Chafetz continued. “This is also an extremely difficult time for our employees who put their health at risk on a daily basis to care for their patients properly. We cannot thank them enough and they are the true heroes of Crystal Health and Rehab and the Keys community.”

Bob Eadie, health officer for Monroe County, told officials during a May 11 conference call that the number of positive cases inside the facility could increase. As for ongoing communication issues at the facility, he said the health department is recommending nursing staff “be as transparent as they can be.”

U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell said she’s asked the health department to ensure they’re doing contact tracing to prevent further spread and for regular testing of frontline workers at senior living facilities like Crystal Health & Rehab Center.

“My heart is with those who tested positive for COVID-19 at this Keys senior living facility and their families. I have been in contact with families who have relatives at this facility, and they are unacceptably being left in the dark. Senior living facilities have a responsibility to inform residents and their families of COVID-19 cases,” MucarselPowell said.

Crystal Health announced that a hotline has been created for family members to receive adequate and timely information. They are to call 305-3630252.

KEY WEST NURSING HOME: NO COVID CASES OR SYMPTOMS DIRECTOR REPORTS TO HOSPITAL DISTRICT BOARD

A

s of May 8, the Key West nursing home on College Road, officially named the Key West Health & Rehabilitation Center (KWHR), had no cases or symptoms of COVID-19 in any of its 100 or so residents or any staff members, according to a report from facility administrator Brian Brinkerhoff.

Brinkerhoff submitted the report to the Lower Florida Keys Hospital District Board for its May 11 virtual meeting. The hospital district board did not publish the virtual meeting access information for the public on its website or on the meeting agenda.

The agenda packet included Brinkerhoff’s report, which states, “As of May 8, no persons have presented symptoms consistent with COVID-19 in the facility. There are no residents with signs or symptoms of COVID-19. No staff with signs or symptoms. ‌ We have admitted nine residents from Lower Keys Medical Center, who all have tested negative for COVID-19 prior to admission. The facility has not had any staff members show signs or symptoms; nor has any staff member required testing.â€?

A no-visitation policy remains in effect, “but staff is always willing to arrange FaceTime/Skype visits with residents and their families,� the report states.

Brinkerhoff also said that the longterm care facility has established new admission protocols in which any person

being newly admitted to the center, “regardless of negative COVID-19 tests,� are admitted via a new admission ward and isolated for 14 days before being introduced to the rest of the facility’s residents.

The new admission ward has a separate entrance and exit, as well as designated linens, crash carts, “and the same staff members are caring for the residents admitted to this ward as much as possible,�

Brinkerhoff’s report states. “The residents in that ward receive therapy services from therapists dedicated to that ward.�

Finally, screening policies are in place in accordance with CDC guidelines for employees prior to each shift, and a tracking system is in place for any employee who calls out sick to ensure there is no risk to residents or staff members, Brinkerhoff writes. “The facility has a supply of PPEs and has hired a seamstress to make washable isolation gowns (which is the one area of potential shortage). The material for these gowns was approved by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) prior to making the gowns. At this time, the facility has 35 washable gowns.�

Group activities have been halted since March 11, but residents and staff continue to participate in socially distant activities from their rooms, including bingo, music and happy hours.

TOURISM OFFICIALS DISCUSS ECONOMIC FALLOUT

A

fter 18 months of record-breaking hotel occupancy and other soaring tourism statistics, the Florida Keys’ tourism-dependent economy ground to a halt on March 17, when hotels, attractions and most other businesses closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re now entering the longest period of no tourism that we’ve ever experienced,” Tourist Development Council Director Stacey Mitchell said on May 12 in meetings with the five District Advisory Committees (DACs) in the Keys that determine how bed tax revenues from hotels and other lodging establishments within those districts will be spent to promote events and improvement projects.

Mitchell said the TDC is facing a deficit of more than $13 million this year.

“The impacts of this pandemic are being felt wider and deeper than initially anticipated, and the extended mental health toll remains undetermined,” Mitchell said. “We need to get people working again, but we also need to balance that with the health of both our residents and visitors. Every other destination in Florida is open for business; we’re not. We have to remain dark until we can reopen, but the marketing field for tourism will be crowded. No one knows what the future holds. We don’t even have a date for when we can reopen.”

At each DAC meeting, the TDC’s market research director, Kelli Fountain, presented some of the travel industry’s expectations about trends going forward in the wake of the pandemic. Fountain had compiled several statistics from various travel surveys and industry sources.

There is some good news for the Florida Keys with regard to what travelers will want when they’re once again free to roam the country.

“Sixty-eight percent of travelers reported that they miss taking vacations, and in a bit of good news for the Florida Keys, the majority are reporting that they’ll want to vacation in a beach-and-resort sort of destination,” Fountain said, adding that nearly 50% of travelers surveyed said they will avoid crowded destinations, air travel and cruise ships for a while.

“People don’t want to be too close to others, or on an airplane,” Fountain reported.

“Younger travelers will likely take more road trips while avoiding air travel, and travelers aged 50 to 64 seem to be the least concerned about the virus.”

Tourism officials will target Keys advertising on the “drive-down markets,” for people who can get here by car, and economy and midscale hotel properties are likely to recover first, with luxury properties taking longer to come back, Fountain said.

Then, representatives from Tinsley Advertising unveiled their revised advertising plans in light of the pandemic.

John Underwood from Tinsley told the DAC members that the agency is preparing a phased advertising approach that includes an early message of, “The Keys are closed to visitors, but keep us in mind.” The later phases will kick in once a reopening date has been announced and will target various demographics of travelers with emphasis on those in the drive-drown markets as far north as Nashville, Underwood said.

DAC II in the Lower Keys, excluding Key West, voted to move $100,000 to its emergency response fund that will allow for quick expenditures. Committee member Bobby Mongelli said he’d like to see the committee put a freeze on funding any capital projects “until we get out of this thing.”

The committee has about $565,000 available for advertising in District II and agreed to earmark all available funds for advertising.

The TDC will ask the County Commission next week to delay applications for capital projects until December rather than the usual July review date.

DAC III of the Middle Keys had about $800,000 in its regular capital fund and $75,000 in its capital resource disaster account. The latter funds brick-and-mortar projects for nonprofits and municipalities after a natural disaster such as a hurricane, but not a pandemic. Neither account can be moved out of the capital budget to use for, say, advertising, but members of the DAC III agreed to bring the balance of the disaster fund up to $375,000 and leave the remainder in the regular capital fund.

Rita Irwin advised the board that pre-Irma, that account stood at $146,000 and ran out fast. “It was the first money available to the nonprofits, and it helped,” she said.

DAC I in Key West, which typically has the most money in its accounts due to the number of hotel rooms on the island, was still meeting as of presstime Wednesday.

The TDC’s District Advisory Committee IV, which covers Islamorada, decided to take $50,000 out of its events budget for advertising resources. That leaves just over $890,000 for advertising and $85,000 for events next year.

DAC member Stephanie Scuderi, who’s market president for Centennial Bank, said she doesn’t know that a big push to get everybody back for events in the first quarter of 2021 is realistic.

“I don’t think people have the appetite for that,” she said.

Mitchell said there’s uncertainty over what the consumer reaction will be when it comes to gathering. More than likely, she said, events and large gatherings will be looked at with suspicion and not widely attended, if at all.

“I want everyone to realize that next fiscal year we have to establish the destination as a safe place to get away.”

DAC V, which covers Key Largo, has $1.3 million in its advertising budget for next year.

Justin Andrews, DAC V member and owner of Capt. Craig’s, wanted to see some money for events, as people will be looking for something to do when they’re able to return to a normal life.

“They’ve been cooped up for months,” he said. “I wish we had more money. I wish we could be bringing revenue now, but it’s not happening.”

Suzanne Holmquist, DAC V member and owner of Calypso Watersports & Charters, said she couldn’t vote to keep money in the events budget for large crowds to convene.

TALKS REOPENING IN WEEKLY INTERVIEW Editor’s Note: This is part two of a series in an interview with Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez.

n May 4, a slow and methodical reopening of Florida started, following Gov. Ron DeSantis’ phase one plan announced on April 29. Restaurants and local businesses flipped their signs to “open,” while elective surgeries at hospitals were given the green light.

On May 1, the Weekly had the chance to speak with Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez via phone to discuss the reopening, the state’s handling of the coronavirus, the challenges the state’s had to confront as a result of pandemic and how the Keys have fared since the first reported case here on March 20.

So far, Monroe County has had 96 COVID-19 cases. It’s been a delicate situation locally with the island chain’s proximity to what’s been the hot spot in Florida — the southeast region of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. They account for more than half the cases statewide.

On March 22, the county closed its doors to visitors in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus. And days later, a checkpoint was established at two spots in Key Largo to keep nonresidents away.

Locally, officials have been busy enforcing statewide orders on vacation rentals and measures such as screenings at the airports.

Nuñez, who’s a Keys homeowner, said Monroe County has fared “extraordinarily well” when examining the total number of hospitalizations since the pandemic hit, 11, and deaths, three.

“Any death is tragic, and one death is one too many,” she said. “In the grand scheme, obviously, Monroe has been able to keep this very contained. Those measures I would suspect have contributed to the low case rate.”

As things start to settle and restrictions are slowly lifted, Nuñez said, Monroe will have to get to a point where “they’re going to have to find that happy medium” in opening up the Keys while keeping the people safe.

“You want to make sure to contain the cases on a continuing basis, but at some point your residents are really going to want the economy up and running again, and businesses are going to be at that tipping point where they may have to close for good,” she said. “And I think that would do irreparable damage to Keys residents. It’s a trial-and-error, it’s a treadcautiously approach, but I think that’s reflected

in the governor’s plan. I think he would encourage leadership of Monroe County to also take a little bit of trial-and-error, a baby step as he calls it.”

TESTING In terms of testing, Florida has completed more than 561,000 as of May 12. While the state remains near the top in that category, the expansion of widespread testing continues with new walk-up and drive-through sites across Florida, especially Miami-Dade. The state has also added a mobile lab that’ll travel to different regions to conduct rapid testing at nursing homes and health care settings.

At the outset, Nuñez said, testing restrictions were onerous and dictated by the CDC, especially the federally-supported test sites.

“You could only get tested if you had been to China or had symptoms and were over 65, or were a first responder,” she said. “It was really tight, the criteria, and they’ve loosened it. We’ve basically said for most intents and purposes, if you feel like you should get a test, then by all means we want you to be tested.”

UNEMPLOYMENT From March 15 to May 12, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported that more than $1.5 million had been paid to claimants who had lost their jobs. In total, a little over 1 million claims were processed, with more than 656,000 paid.

“That initial backlog that compounded the system, the CONNECT system, just could not process and it could not accept. It was constantly crashing,” Nuñez said. “Fast forward two weeks, we were throwing every resource and

every type of equipment we could at it.”

Nuñez said there were instances where people applied two — and in some cases three — times, as they didn’t know whether their application made it through online. As a result, people were also filling out paper applications.

The state continues to weed that all out.

“In a week’s time, we were able to go from 6% of claimants who had applied and had been verified and paid to the neighborhood of 45-47%,” she said. “That’s an improvement.

We know we have to continue to push because there have been people who’ve been waiting for some time. Once we get through the backlog, and now that people are going back to work at least for a majority of the counties, I think we’ll see a slowdown in new applicants, so that’ll give time to take care of the existing.”

In Monroe County, 3,936 claims were submitted related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE NEXT STEP What’s it going to take in order to move on to phase two of reopening Florida? Nuñez said officials need to see a continued downward trend in cases and hospitalizations.

“I think we’ll look at all of that and how the counties have fared with limited openings and how they’re doing and what we’re seeing.

We’ll just go from there,” she said. “If we see an uptick then obviously there will be a pause, if you will. All of that data will be part of the decision making for the governor to begin the next phase.”

Overall, Nuñez has learned that leadership matters during these times.

“We’ve dealt with Zika, we’ve dealt with swine flu and H1N1 and all of that, but it has never yielded the economic response that this one yielded,” she said. “I think it’s important that we be prepared and never take our eye off the ball. And to that point, I mentioned hurricanes. We’re getting ready for hurricane season. A pandemic cannot completely consume you and it has. It’s been 24/7, all hands on deck.”

n the Florida Keys, where fewer than 100 cases of coronavirus have been reported, the economic catastrophe is beginning to overshadow the public health crisis. The line between those who want to continue limiting access to protect the island chain and those who want to reopen the Keys for commerce and tourism is growing more distinct and divisive by the day.

Key West business owner Ed Swift, whose company, Historic Tours of America, employs about 350 people, orchestrated two protests on May 12 at one of the island’s busiest intersections.

“We’re committing economic suicide by not getting our city back open,” Swift told the Keys Weekly in a Tuesday interview.

“Duval Street is going to be boarded up. There will be foreclosures. People won’t be able to pay their rent, mortgages, taxes or insurance. We’re going to see tremendous pain and anger.

Families are going to be hurt.”

Swift said he organized the protests because when he woke up the morning of May 9, he thought, “This is bull---. This cannot go on. I could no longer just stand by and watch us destroy our economy to the point of no return.”

Both demonstrations — at 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. — drew as many as 100 participants, many of them hefting signs that read, “Open the hotels,” “End the roadblock,” “Let people work,” and “Open U.S. 1.”

Others joined the protest to

display their own sentiments, including protester Sally Galbraith, who wore a mask and gloves that had the words “Too Soon” written on them in black marker.

Swift emphasized the importance of protecting the community’s most vulnerable residents from the virus while allowing those who are willing and able to return to work.

“We are a community of small businesses, most hanging by a thread. We cannot continue to allow our fear of the virus to destroy tourism, the single enterprise that provides a livelihood for the majority of those living and working on our island.

The people who live here need to make a living to support their families,” Swift said in a prepared statement for the media. “It is time for balance — to balance our fears of possibly catching and dying from the virus with the reality of an economic disaster from which we will not recover for many years.”

Swift told the Keys Weekly he was surprised by the turnout at both demonstrations, and said most of the participants did not even work for HTA, but rather for hotels, bars and other attractions.

He denied the rumors circulating on social media that said Swift had offered HTA employees $50 apiece to participate in the protest.

“I offered nothing to anybody,” he said, adding that he was not coordinating similar events in the other six cities where Historic Tours of America operates

— Savannah, St. Augustine, San Diego, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Nashville. “Key West is the place that’s lagging behind. We’re already back up and running in Savannah and St. Augustine. Remember, hotels weren’t closed in the rest of the state of Florida.”

Jeff Hoerl, a trolley driver for HTA, was holding a sign next to Swift on Tuesday.

“I need to work. I have two daughters, 11 and 14. Their dad needs to work,” Hoerl said, pointing to Swift. “This man could be sitting anywhere and sipping a margarita, but he’s not. He’s out here for the people. He really cares about this community.”

Others were less supportive of Swift’s position. One protest passerby observed, “You guys want the checkpoint taken down, but yet you’re still wearing masks to protect yourselves? It’s too soon.”

Another woman, Swift said, circled in her car past the protest three times, each time raising her middle finger and shouting expletives at the protesters.

When asked whether any police or city officials had questioned the protest, which drew significantly more than 10 people, Swift said, “The city just told me that people had to wear masks if they were going to be within 6 feet of each other. Most folks were wearing masks anyway,” although photos of the event show only a minority of people wearing masks while standing shoulder to shoulder.

he Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission board, appointed by the governor and chaired by Key West businessman Robert Spottswood, recently submitted its response to — and has some issues with — the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s new proposed management plan, known as the Restoration Blueprint.

In a 58-page document authored

by Spottswood, the FWC board emphasizes its commitment to balancing user access to the marine sanctuary with resource protection. In its response, the state board also repeatedly asserts its authority to manage fisheries in local, state and some federal waters.

Finally, the FWC board repeats its ongoing concerns about law enforcement staffing levels, which, Spottswood writes, have never reached the levels promised when the sanctuary was first established.

Spottswood questions how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which manages the sanctuary, expects FWC to enforce new laws, boundaries and restrictions when it barely has sufficient manpower to enforce current regulations.

“As my fellow commissioners and I consider the management changes proposed in the Restoration Blueprint, we find ourselves asking important fundamental questions including: whether or not the current management strategies are working; if the new proposed management approaches are the best way to ensure a healthy ecosystem as well as sustainable fisheries in the Florida Keys; and whether or not the proposed increased local level access restrictions will even accomplish the goals of the DEIS at the ecosystem level,” Spottswood writes.

“We are concerned that the public will struggle with the same questions that we have, and that the lack of clear answers will make it difficult to gain public support for the proposed management actions. In order to satisfactorily address these questions, further evaluation of existing management measures, as well as proposed management measures, are needed to ensure that the actions we ultimately take are necessary and expected to produce results.”

STATE VERSUS FEDS Wildlife board questions parts of sanctuary plan

The FWC’s response criticizes the sanctuary’s draft management plan for not appropriately addressing water quality issues and the effects of water flow from the Everglades on Keys marine resources.

“We do understand that many of these ecosystem impacts are beyond the scope of the FKNMS to control, but the effects of these impacts should still be identified and the actions to address them should be recognized in the (draft plan).”

With regard to fishery management, the FWC board’s response states, “FWC is committed to its continuing lead role, as part of the shared partnership with FKNMS, in promulgating fisheries management actions within the FKNMS, including area closures and access restrictions for fisheries management purposes. Area closures and access restrictions should be an action of last resort and should be considered on a case-by-case basis, only after evaluating the science and potential ramifications of such actions. … For example, the proposed closure of Western Dry Rocks is a fisheries management action under FWC’s authority and we will consider whether alternative management strategies are warranted for this area.”

Spottswood also enclosed in his response a series of letters dating back to the 1990s in which FWC, formerly known as Florida Marine Patrol, requested additional enforcement officers from the federal government.

Sarah Fangman, superintendent of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, acknowledged the challenges that the new plan presents and pledged to continue working with FWC on the final draft.

“The sanctuary has worked with the state throughout this management review process, which officially started in 2012,” Fangman said after receiving the FWC board’s response. “Together we are attempting to address complex issues that do not have easy answers. We look forward to continuing to work with FWC and the Department of Environmental Protection to find solutions that will help address the serious challenges we face in our marine environment, recognizing that the health of sanctuary habitats and marine life have a profound effect on our economy and our way of life.

“Now that the sanctuary has completed the Restoration Blueprint public comment process, we are focused on synthesizing those comments and using them to refine our proposals into a single proposal, also referred to as a draft rule,” Fangman said. “We will release that draft rule, hopefully later this year, and there will be another official public comment opportunity. That input will inform what changes there might be to the sanctuary's boundaries, marine zones, sanctuary-wide regulations and management plan.”

he skies are blue on a picturesque May 12 as Dominic Austin takes off from the Marathon Airport in a Piper aircraft.

Austin recalls the winds being strong as he made six landings during his training. All in all, the Coral Shores senior, who will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the fall, said the day of training was good as he works to get his private pilot license. As of May 12, Austin had completed nearly seven hours of training.

“I’m kind of an adrenaline fan,” he said.

“I like getting that blood pumping and that sweat going. I really like the landings and takeoffs.”

Austin’s admiration for flying at a young age originated in a flight simulator. He also recalls the preliminary flight test his parents set up for him as a 15th birthday gift.

“It was too expensive to really keep going and I couldn’t get my private license until I was 17,” he said. “It kind of fell back and I didn’t really continue on with anything.”

His passion for flying was still there, however, as he sifted through his schooling options and examined what he really wanted to do. Austin was eyeing Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, but figured there was no way he could attend, given the cost.

Austin thought about taking courses to become an auto tech, but it wasn’t the life he envisioned. He ended up attending EmbryRiddle for an open house and instantly took interest.

“We went through the aviation maintenance hall, and it just kind of took off with me. It’s what I wanted to do right then,” he said. “The school had tech (courses), mechanics (courses) and aviation repair. I would be able to get my commercial pilot’s license.

It just kind of had everything in one spot, so I kind of hunkered down and said, ‘Yes, that’s what I want to do.’ The big thing was they told me ‘Get your private license before you get here; it will save you a whole bunch of money.’”

With help from Coral Shores athletic director Rich Russell, Austin was able to get in contact with some pilots in town. Russell put him in touch with Sol Bradman, who teaches flying in Marathon. Bradman graciously agreed to help Austin to get him the hours needed for his license.

“Dominic’s also connected with Col. Brian Neal, who recently retired from the Air Force and is now a commercial pilot, and David Turner, who starred in football for us in the ’80s,” Russell said. “David has been flying commercially since the late ’80s. I’m very indebted to each of these three outstanding men for their willingness to ‘give back’ and assist Dom.”

Not only is he on his way toward his private pilot’s license, but he also recently received a $2,500 scholarship from the Middle Keys EAA to help pay for pilot training in pursuit of his private pilot license. Each year, EAA Chapter 1241 awards four scholarships to deserving local high school students who are interested in pursuing an aviation career.

Austin is the first recipient.

“The objective of the scholarship is to help kids like Dominic get their private pilot’s license,” said Fred Fink, of the Middle Keys EAA. “We take recommendations and Dominic was recommended to us. We brought him in and interviewed him. We were very impressed with him. He’s very career-oriented and he’s mapped out his path in life.”

Last week, Austin had the chance to take his mom, Julie, up in the air for a ride over Marathon. Austin said the view was phenomenal, between crystal clear water and sightings of nurse sharks.

Austin said he ultimately wants to fly jets in the Navy when he graduates from EmbryRiddle.

“That’s my overall goal,” he said.

As for his senior year, he said that a lot got shot down pretty quickly with the current pandemic. A track-and-field standout, he was going for some school records. Austin said that, overall, he knows where he’s going in life.

STABBING SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDER 17-YEAR-OLD EXPECTED TO RECOVER

The 17-year-old accused of fatally stabbing his 14-year-old brother and critically stabbing his father during the early morning hours of May 7 in Islamorada was officially charged with murder and aggravated battery on May 13.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the teen suspect, Daniel Weisberger, remains hospitalized at Ryder Trauma Center in Miami after running into U.S. 1 and being hit by a truck 15 hours after the incident occurred. Weisberger, who remains in ICU, is in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The incident began around 4 a.m. on May 7 inside the Executive Bay apartment complex and lasted until the evening hours, when Weisberger ran into the road and hit the side of a truck on U.S. 1. What spurred the attacks remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office says.

“We’re trying to put the pieces to the puzzle together still,” Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said.

Only three people were in the apartment during the time of the incident: the young brother who’s deceased, the older brother who’s continuing to recover in the ICU and the father who’s in recovery.

During a May 7 press conference, Ramsay said a neighbor first heard a disturbance inside the family’s apartment around 4 a.m. Roughly two hours later, around 6 a.m., the father, 43-year-old Ariel Poholek, came running out of the apartment and told a neighbor what had happened while asking for help.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived within two minutes, but Weisberger had fled.

Helicopters, tactical teams and K-9 units from the sheriff’s office and neighboring law enforcement agencies searched for him throughout the morning and afternoon. The manhunt spanned from Islamorada to Tavernier with no sightings of Weisberger.

Around 7 p.m. on May 7, people who were traveling on U.S. 1 and Old Highway near Executive Bay saw a young male who fit Weisberger’s description.

Upper Keys resident John Gallant said he was driving south on U.S.1 when he saw a male on the side of road, “staring off like nobody was home.”

“I turned around at Founders (Park) and I drove back up to park on Old Highway. People who were behind me drove up a few seconds later,” he said. “They got out of their car and yelled, at which point, the male freaked out and started running diagonally across U.S. 1 southbound.”

As soon as the male got into the median, Gallant said, it looked like he was stopping as a northbound truck was approaching. Gallant said people were yelling, “Stop,” but the male subject lunged toward the truck.

“He caught the side and the mirror,” Gallant said. “We ran over. He was face down. Two people stopped, including a young man who appeared to have medical training and a nurse.”

Eyewitnesses said there were several lacerations on Weisberger’s neck and his breathing was labored.

Deputies and fire rescue arrived, as well as Florida Highway Patrol. Weisberger was subsequently airlifted to the hospital in Miami. Traffic was diverted off U.S. 1 between Founders Park and Executive Bay Club as an investigation ensued while statements were being taken.

All in all, Ramsay said, the important thing is the suspect is no longer a threat to the general public and officers.

“We hate to see that he’s hurt.

We were hoping to capture him alive and unharmed,” he said. “We were concerned about him being on the loose.”

The condition of the father, Poholek, is good as he continues his recovery.

‘PASCAL SPREADS KINDNESS LIKE WILDFIRE’ Community mourns a shooting star, gone too soon

In the early morning hours of May 6, Pascal Weisberger and his dad, Ari Poholek, woke up early to watch a meteor shower from their home in Executive Bay in Islamorada.

The next morning, Weisberger, 14, died in a violent tragedy, and Poholek and the Keys community who have watched him grow up here have been rocked with grief ever since.

“I loved him,” Poholek told Keys Weekly from his hospital room in Miami.

“He was so cute. When he was born, I put my hand out, and he grabbed it and squeezed it,” Poholek said. “I remember looking down at this beautiful face smiling at me, and he held onto my finger, and I just thought, ‘I’m totally in love with this kid. He's so beautiful.’”

Composed even in his grief, Poholek continued to look back on that special moment.

“I spent the first 20 minutes of his life holding his fingers. He held my hand and was happy to be with me, and I was happy to be with him. It was the best start to my relationship with him, and it went like that our whole lives.”

Weisberger spent the next 14 years showing that same wonder for the world, which Poholek lovingly nurtured.

“He had this thirst for knowledge, where he just wanted to know everything about things that interested him,” Poholek said. “And he never forgot anything. He just layered things and learned more and more.”

Weisberger devoured facts and could memorize by sight and sound.

Everything he was interested in, he went “100 times further than needed” and eagerly shared his knowledge with everyone who wanted to listen, Poholek said. When he was assigned the role of Barack Obama in first grade, Weisberger memorized all the presidents’ names, their first ladies and when each was born and died. Poholek then spent years trying to arrange for Weisberger to meet his idol. Eventually, with some help from friends, some luck and Weisberger’s ability to spout off former first ladies’ birthdays and names to empathetic security guards, Poholek, Weisberger and his brother, Daniel, met and shook hands with President Obama.

“I was ecstatic. It was one of the best moments of my life. The boys were gonna meet the president. They were so excited,” Poholek recalled.

Similarly, when the star scholar learned about geography, he memorized every state capital and 95% of country capitals. When he learned about marine debris pollution, he and his father organized community cleanups at Harry Harris Park where they lived. Those cleanups continue to this day.

In extracurriculars, Weisberger similarly excelled in his characteristically modest, soft-spoken way. In a year, he overcame a fear of putting his face in the water, and became “a little fish,” said Poholek. Weisberger took up running and proudly represented his school in the Special Olympics. He rose through the ranks in both the Boy Scouts and tae kwon do, putting in dedicated time and effort in both beloved activities. When he died, Weisberger was on the cusp of earning his Eagle Scout rank and his black belt. Discussions are underway to try to award the former to him posthumously.

“Pascal always amazed me so much. I was proud of him all the time,” said Poholek. The grieving dad emphasized how impressed he was watching his son exceed expectations even in areas that initially challenged him.

“Pascal worked hard his entire life.

He persevered and didn’t give up on himself and became a really wonderful human being,” said Poholek. “Everything that you and others find amazing about him, he developed because he was willing to push himself to be better than the cards he was dealt. He was a self-made kid, with a supportive community who loved him.”

He worked with occupational and speech therapists for years to overcome a stutter and become the engaged, caring citizen he was. Few people realized he was on the spectrum for autism.

Weisberger’s intellectual curiosity and persevering spirit were surpassed perhaps only by his extraordinary kindness and strong commitment to helping others, many have noted since his passing.

“Ari was unstoppable when it came to taking care of the environment, and Pascal was his right-hand man,” said Boy Scouts friend Kathleen Pegues.

The dynamic duo are well known in the Upper Keys for their dedication to service. As co-scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 912, Poholek encouraged his son and other kids to engage regularly with the community, the environment and things that matter.

They volunteered at community cleanups, animal rescues, the weekly God’s Kitchen meal at Burton Memorial United Methodist Church food pantry and environmental events, in addition to raising the flag at many veterans events.

Jessyne Peterson, a fellow troop mom, said, “Pascal shared and he cared. That is what he was all about.

His heart was full of love and he wasn’t afraid to show it.” Peterson’s son Aidan called Weisberger “one of the kindest people he has ever known.”

scout, said, “Pascal spread kindness like wildlife. Not a single moment of my life will go by without me remembering him and his potential. I miss him.”

“His soul was perfect,” said Cindy Martin, the other scoutmaster for Troop 912. ““How can this one child hold so much love, strength, integrity, morality, intelligence and kindness?

How can he exist?”

In addition to his scout and scholastic endeavors, Weisberger volunteered with the Upper Keys Humane Society at least once a week for the last four years. Weisberger wanted to be a veterinarian, Poholek said. Animals were one of Weisberger’s true passions and interests, and he’d read to them, sweep, clean the cages and unfold newspaper for their bedding.

This week, the Upper Keys Humane Society announced it will name its lobby in Weisberger’s honor. A memorial plaque with his name will read: “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. — Immanuel Kant.”

The honor is one of hundreds organized in Weisberger’s memory. Treasure Village Montessori Charter School (TVM) in Islamorada, where Weisberger was an eighth grader, hosted the first Pascal Weisberger Day of Service on May 13, an event that will recur annually on Weisberger’s birthday as a reminder to do good things for the community, as Weisberger always did.

Ocean Studies Charter School in Key Largo, Weisberger’s first school in the Keys, is considering dedicating its new science laboratory to Pascal, Poholek said.

TVM principal Kelly Mangel said, “He wasn't waiting for adulthood to change the world; he was already doing it.”

Mangel recalled that Weisberger was one of the few people who asked someone how they were doing in order to hear the response. “He’d ask about you, your family, your pets,” Mangel said. And unlike most, he would genuinely wait for an answer and respond with love and kindness.

“For the rest of my life I will try to emulate the skills he taught me and I will strive to be a better person in his honor,” a teary Mangel said.

“We sat there in camp chairs at the dock at our place looking and looking,” said Poholek. “After 6 a.m., the light was streaming from the east, the dark was receding to the west and the full moon was setting very low to the horizon. Between the light and dark, there were three shining points of light, and I pointed them out to Pascal.”

The father and son sat there watching Mars, Saturn and Jupiter, when all of a sudden, a light shot across the front of the planets. Poholek described the shooting star “like someone took a paintbrush with silver and streaked it across the sky.” He added, “It left an imprint on my brain that I'll never forget.”

Hearing the many tributes to his son, Poholek said Weisberger was an extraordinary kid. but also a regular kid. He never shied away from doing the hard things or the right things, but also loved to be outside, play with his friends, watch movies and learn new things.

“There were just so many things to be proud of,” said Poholek. “Pascal was the unique and impossible combo of someone who had intense empathy for others while still excelling at so many things himself, of never self-promoting and always putting others first in his thoughts and feelings, while still having much intelligence and ability.

“I got so lucky,” he continued.

“What’s the chance of someone like that existing and what’s the chance of him being my son? How could someone like this not be allowed to exist anymore?”

Poholek circled back to that last starry morning on the dock of the Executive Bay Apartments with his younger son, their last one-on-one time together.

Poholek said Weisberger, excited as always, hopped up and down saying, “I can’t believe it! Isn’t that so cool!”

His dad was happy to see his son happy, and they watched the sunrise together.

“That was our last special moment,” Poholek said. “That's what I’ll always remember — that special time getting up early before everyone else; sitting on the dock; looking at beautiful surroundings, beautiful sky and the combo of celestial events; and thinking how lucky we were to have seen that.

And we were the only ones to see it.

It was our meteor, the brightest we’d ever seen. And then it was gone.”

FEDS APPROVE OXITEC MOSQUITO TRIAL STATE APPROVAL NEEDED BEFORE FIELD TESTS BEGIN SARA MATTHIS

he federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved field tests for Oxitec’s biologically modified mosquitoes. If approved by the state of Florida and local authorities, the first tests will take place in the Florida Keys beginning in summer 2020 and in Texas beginning in 2021.

For the trials to take place in the Keys — the use of biologically-modified male mosquitoes to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito — the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services must sign off. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is responsible for transmitting dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.

Oxitec is a U.S.-owned, U.K.-based company that develops biologically engineered solutions to insect control issues. Oxitec revealed its “2nd Generation” mosquito technology in September 2019. In both the first and second versions of the technology, Oxitec takes a biologically modified mosquito and uses tetracycline to keep it alive to adulthood so that it can mate. A very basic layman’s explanation of the procedure is that when the tetracycline applications stop (when the mosquitoes are released into the wild), the mosquitoes and offspring die. In the 2nd Generation technology, only female breeders are treated with tetracycline in the lab in the U.K. The 2nd Generation mosquitoes can be distributed as eggs in boxes and shipped globally. A box containing eggs could be placed in a backyard and filled with water, after which the males hatch and start to grow. When the mosquitoes emerge, they fly away into the neighborhood to find female mosquitoes to mate with. Male progeny survive, also carrying the self-limiting gene to half its offspring that are male only … and so on. The 2nd Generation technology allows Oxitec to reduce the number of times the egg box must be refilled, reduces the total population, and Oxitec says, when releases stop, the 2nd Generation mosquito dies out in the wild after a few generations.

Dr. John W. Norris III, the chief of staff of the Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, led the charge in 2018 to stop the Oxitec approval from EPA and even visited Washington, D.C. to meet with regulators personally. In the past, he has said his concerns have nothing to do with genetic modification, but about spreading antibiotic resistance and the ability to treat “superbugs” with one of the strongest, most versatile antibiotics on the market — tetracycline.

Oxitec says that the eggs and the adult male mosquitoes that hatch from them are not exposed to tetracycline. Dr. Norris said, “The act of giving birth — whether it’s a mosquito mother or human mother — is a very germy, gooey thing,” he said. Or, more scientifically, “... breeding females should be heavily weighted for tetracycline-resistant bacteria … you must challenge the microbiome transfer from mother to child …”

Tetracycline is a common genetic tool switch used in many scientific experiments, most of them in the lab. However, tetracycline is also widely used in agricultural applications in Florida.

When and if the trials begin in Florida, Oxitec is required to monitor and sample the treatment areas to determine if it works and to confirm the genetic traits from the modified mosquito disappear over time. The EPA has maintained the right to cancel the Experimental Use Permit at any point during a 24-month period if unforeseen outcomes appear.

FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION IN ISLAMORADA MAY 19 The May 14 drive-through food distribution at Founders Park in Islamorada is canceled due to weather forecasts. The distribution is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 19 from noon to 2 p.m. at Founders Park.

In collaboration with Feeding South Florida, Monroe County, and the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, United Way of Collier and the Keys says the food distribution is available to all who have lost income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple families may be represented in each vehicle. Passengers in the vehicle must have a nose/mouth covering and a box should be placed in the vehicle trunk in which the volunteers will place the food.

The shops must have strategies in place to protect customers and employees from the transmission of COVID-19.

The move is the first amendment to a county emergency directive, which followed Gov. Ron DeSantis’ emergency rules

issued in March.

This amendment allows these personal care businesses to operate at 25 percent capacity and by individual appointment only, no groups.

Appointments shall be spaced 15 minutes apart to allow for proper sanitizing and disinfecting procedures. Masks must be worn by all employees and customers, except when a mask unreasonably interferes with the provision of services.

All surfaces, tools and linens should be disinfected before reopening and between each day of operation. All unnecessary frequently touched items, such as magazines, newspapers, paper products and décor, should be removed from service areas.

This order also allows essential businesses that were permitted to remain open to operate now at 50 percent capacity, with non-essential businesses being allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity. However, bars, nightclubs, gyms and all fitness studios shall remain closed at this time.

he History of Diving Museum’s “Immerse Yourself” virtual presentation set for May 20 will feature the Spiegel Grove.

Jim Wyatt served on the Spiegel Grove from 1984 through 1986 as the gunnery officer. With insight into what it was like to work and live aboard the Spiegel, Wyatt will share experiences swimming along the same passageways where she now rests. Wyatt has more than 45 years of experience as a SCUBA Instructor and 30 years experience as a cave instructor.

He can be found working at Rainbow Reef Dive Center, training and leading divers to explore the Spiegel Grove along with all the other wonderful dive sites of the Upper Keys.

Launched in November 1955, the Spiegel Grove was a Thomaston-class dock landing ship, used to transport Marines and Army soldiers. The Spiegel’s service included good-will missions along the African coast, and amphibious exercises in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

This included operations in support of Scott Carpenter’s manned space flight on the Mercy-Atlas 7, as well as other military exercises with joint forces. The Spiegel was decommissioned after 33 years and eventually was reincarnated as an artificial reef off Key Largo on May 17, 2002.

The Spiegel Grove is one of the most popular Upper Keys dive sites, with an interesting story from its sinking in 2002. The Spiegel prematurely took on water, causing her to turtle and end up upside down with the bow sticking out of the water.

floor. After three years of being nestled on its side, Hurricane Dennis skirted the Florida Keys, causing a surge that re-oriented the ship to the proper upright position.

The museum and Wyatt will be co-hosting the presentation through a private Zoom meeting.

CFFK MAKES MORE GRANTS NEW FUNDS SUPPORT 20 CHARITIES THROUGHOUT KEYS

T

he Community Foundation of the Florida Keys (CFFK) is providing an additional $90,000 from its Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund to help Keys residents with food, housing, rent assistance, health care services and more. The grants support 20 charitable organizations to deliver direct critical aid to low-income families, seniors, children, unemployed service workers, homeless individuals, and others throughout the Keys.

The latest grants will be used for food vouchers, rent credits, infant and toddler essentials, clothes and shoes for the homeless, medical supplies, emergency housing, nutritious meals, local food distribution, health care services, animal care and more. Many of the nonprofits serve the entire Keys and over 50 percent of the funding will benefit Middle and Upper Keys residents.

“It makes us happy to get these checks out quickly to the nonprofits who are serving our residents in need during a rapidly-changing environment,” said Community Foundation CEO Jennifer McComb. “We’re also grateful to the generous Keys residents who continue to give to the Emergency Relief Fund. Donations have been made mostly online and range from $10 to $10,000. This is truly neighbors helping neighbors.”

An initial $25,000 gift from Shery Cotton seeded the emergency fund for COVID-19. So far, CFFK has received over 60 gifts from residents from Key Largo to Key West. The needs continue to grow, as people are out of work longer, and CFFK will continue to make grants as long as donations are received.

Donations can be made at CFFK.org/help or checks can be mailed to 300 Southard St., Ste. 201, Key West, FL 33040. CFFK is distributing 100 percent of funds raised.

A wish list of pressing needs of health and human services organizations at CFFK.org/nonprofitneeds has encouraged some donors to earmark their gifts for specific causes, including Joyce and Ron Burd, Susan Cardenas, Kay and Larry Hirsch, and Greg Oropeza.

SURPRISE RETIREMENT PARADE JAMIE BUHYOFF RETIRES FROM MARATHON HIGH SCHOOL

O

n May 12, about a hundred cars — decorated with balloons and signs and piloted by beep-happy drivers — circled the Marathon High School parking lot. The occasion was a send-off for retiring teacher Jamie Buyhoff, who is also the recipient of the 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year award for MHS. They pulled off the surprise. While the well-wishers gathered their vehicles in the Kmart parking lot, other conspirators contrived to get Buyhoff out of the classroom where she was packing up her belongings.

At first she was baffled, then quickly moved to tears.

Cries of “Bye, Jamie!” and “Love you, Ms. Buyhoff” sounded as the cars passed her special perch and gifts of flowers and cards were handed through the win-

dows. Teachers, students and former students came out to celebrate the teacher’s long career. She’s taught at MHS since 2008, and Stanley Switlik Elementary before that.

“I can’t believe you all kept this from me. We were just on Google Classroom!” she said.

CANES SLUGGER COMMITS TO SANTA FE COLLEGE

A

Coral Shores slugger who’s spent the past four years in starring roles has signed a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.

Dillon Walters, slugging shortstop and pitcher, fielded several offers before accepting a scholarship with the Saints.

There was some speculation that Walters could be selected in the Major League Baseball draft scheduled for June 10, but he and his family have indicated they are fully committed to his next step, college.

“I am very excited to continue my academic and baseball career at Santa Fe College, as this program has a history of winning and I plan to help continue that tradition,” Walters said. “I want to thank all the coaches I’ve had over the years; each has played a role in helping me fulfill this dream. I also want to say a special ‘thank you’ to my parents who have supported me every step of the way. They have literally traveled with me across the United States.”

Over the past few years, Walters has achieved many of his baseball dreams, traveling with competitive teams from Southern California and throughout Florida. He represented the South Florida region at USA Baseball and became a finalist for the NTIS Olympic team.

He was invited by the USA to play in the Dominican Republic with former and current MLB players. He accepted that offer and represented the USA in games last summer. His teammates and he also volunteered for community service while in the Dominican.

“Dillon is a very hardworking young man and Santa Fe College is getting one of the best kids I have ever coached, both on and off the baseball field,” said head coach Fabian Placencia.

into a respectful young man over the last 10 years. From his first home run in Cooperstown to signing on with his No.1-targeted school in Santa Fe College, I am not surprised,” said associate head coach Brian “Tideo” Tiedemann.

Walters played in Perfect Game’s Top Prospect games in which his performance ranked him a 9 out of 10 grade. He then was invited to the elite PG World Showcase in January 2020, which 90 elite players attended.

Walters was graded as a “top 10 MLB draft pick and the highest level college prospect.” Walters has been followed by the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Several Florida colleges tracked Walters in the past few years, but his dream had always been to play for Santa Fe College. It was during a junior college tournament in December 2019 when Santa Fe head baseball coach Johnny Wiggs invited him for an official visit in January. Soon after that, Dillon received a scholarship offer, committed and signed to play baseball at Santa Fe College and pursue a business degree.

“We had followed Dillon closely and really liked him, but had been told he was committed to Palm Beach Atlantic

University,” Wiggs said. “I got a call from a Santa Fe baseball alumni, Josh Corr, who played his high school ball at Coral Shores, and a couple of his former teammates are coaching there now. He said that Dillon was still open to coming to Santa Fe. We offered him and he accepted. We’re excited about his prospects and how he can help us here.”

Walters was born and raised in the Florida Keys. He loved all sports growing up, but his passion was always baseball, with fishing being a close second. He has three older siblings, Michaela, Rachel and Sean, all of whom graduated from Coral Shores and the University of Florida.

“I have been fortunate to be a part of Dillon’s baseball career as a father, coach and now a member of a very large family of baseball players, parents and coaches,” said Mike Walters, Dillon’s father. “It excited me greatly to know Santa Fe is gaining not only a wonderful young man but a great utility player that pitches as well. I look forward to Dillon’s success both on the diamond and in college as he begins his new endeavor.”

oral Shores senior volleyball standout Carly Lindback has been selected to the Florida Coaches Association’s All-State and All-Academic teams. These honors add to a rather extensive list of recognitions for her 2019 season, including being named team MVP. The coaches association is made up of many of Florida’s top high school volleyball coaches including Coral Shores volleyball coach, Kathy Ets-Hokin.

In promoting Lindback to her peers, Ets-Hokin said Lindback is an outstanding student-athlete who has played varsity volleyball for the Lady Canes for four years.

“She made varsity her freshman year and always stood out as a driven, hardworking athlete who sets the bar high,” she said. “In the four years playing for the Lady Canes, she lettered all four years, made All-County two years, and Player of the Year for Monroe County this past year. Lindback was a captain for the past two years. She has been dedicated to this sport for many years, playing high school, club and training in her off-season with personal trainers. I am so proud of Carly and she has worked so hard for this.”

Lindback said she’s honored to receive the awards, having put in a lot of work to get to where she is today.

“I would like to thank my parents for always supporting me, driving to all of my practices and tournaments, and for being my number one fans. I could not have accomplished any of this without them,” Lindback said.

SUMMER CAMP CANCELED; GRADUATION CEREMONY IS POSSIBLE Marathon City Council meets for the first time in 90 days

I

t’s been 90 days since the entire Marathon City Council has met; the last time was on Feb. 11, before the shutdown of the Keys in response to the coronavirus. Since then all city decisions have been made by an executive group of top staffers including the city manager and fire chief. But on May 12, all five elected officials were back together and the council meeting was broadcast on a YouTube channel with viewers able to submit questions via phone or via email.

It was a combination of good and bad news. The bad news is that the City of Marathon has decided to cancel summer camp. It normally serves between 30 and 60 kids every week, some of them on scholarship.

The hub of the camp is at the main pavilion of Marathon Community Park, where the different age groups all congregate at the beginning and end of the day.

“With social distancing, I just don’t see how we can fit more than 8 or 9 kids, and it’s difficult to tell 5-year-olds to stay away from one another or wear a mask,” said Parks and Recreation Director Paul Davis.

“I’d rather that come out now than wait until the last minute.”

“We’ve talked about it every week, but we are going to have to cancel,” said City Manager Chuck Lindsey.

Here’s the good news: There may be a way to host a graduation ceremony for Marathon High School seniors at Marathon Community Park. Council asked staff to research the proposal brought forward by Councilman Luis Gonzalez.

“I’ve received multiple questions about what we can do as a city.

Can we see if the park is big enough to maintain social distancing and accommodate the crowd? Maybe we could mark off the grass with a section for each family or graduate,” said Gonzalez.

The school district has canceled in-person ceremonies normally held in school auditoriums and has promised a virtual meeting instead, with a possible makeup ceremony later this summer.

Staff also gave council updates on the backlog of permits, and plans to bring all city hall staff back to the building.

“We will start slow, and get a deep cleaning of city hall and other buildings, which we are working on now,” said Fire Chief John Johnson.

Utilities Director Dan Saus told the council staff is taking advantage of the low flow, with fewer visitors generating wastewater, to make important repairs and upgrades.

Since the departure of former city attorney David Migut, Marathon has been using the temporary service of Dirk Smits, an attorney with the law firm of Vernis and Bowling headquartered in the Upper Keys.

On May 12, he brought forward a proposal and a contract to become the permanent legal advisor for the city.

The council thanked him for the offer and stressed they are very happy with his work. Nonetheless, they asked Smits to post an advertisement for an in-house attorney dedicated entirely to the City of Marathon.

Smits’ contract was extended, with a 30-day “out,” or termination clause.

The council also voted to accept a $5 million grant from Rebuild Florida’s buyout program. The program targets homes with repetitive damage, in low-income areas, that house the elderly (62 years or older) or young children (18 years or younger).

The city negotiates the deal, buys the home, and then demolishes it to leave the lot vacant. Keys applicants, including 17 property owners in Marathon, applied last summer.

The agreement came with pages and pages of the type of documentation cities must provide for homeowners to qualify. Marathon might hire a consultant to handle the administration of the program, possibly partnering with other Keys municipalities. It’s unknown whether the state funding will be provided up front, or whether cities will need to finance the program and wait on reimbursement.

MONROE COUNTY TAX COLLECTOR REOPENS

T

he Monroe County Tax Collector offices reopened to the public on May 11 with limited services.

There is no convenience fee when using an e-check online.

Henriquez closed her offices to the public on March 23 as a way to reduce the chance of spreading the coronavirus.

The tax collector offices at the Key West, Key West Driver License, Marathon, Plantation and Key Largo locations will reopen with the following restrictions: The offices are following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, limiting the number of customers gathering in lobbies.

Only the person completing the transaction will be permitted to enter the lobby.

Customers are required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing while in the office.

Some services remain canceled until further notice, including driver license road tests and concealed weapons permit applications (although Florida Resident renewals can be processed).

“My staff has served Monroe County with optimism during this pandemic,” Henriquez said. “Even though the lobbies were closed, we have assisted many customers via phone, mail, web transactions, drop box and the drive-through.

ZIEG ACCUSES SENMARTIN OF PERSONAL GAIN SECOND ETHICS COMPLAINT FILED WITH STATE

M

arathon City Councilman Dan Zieg has filed a second ethics complaint against Marathon City Councilman Mark Senmartin. The latest was received on April 30 by the state Commission on Ethics and involves a $10,000 donation from the City Dan Zieg of Marathon, proposed by Senmartin, to send 16 Marathon High School theater students* to New York City in February for three days of drama workshops and Broadway shows. The students, including Senmartin’s son Dante, were accompanied by five adult chaperones.

Zieg wrote in the complaint that “the motion and subsequent donation by the Mark Senmartin city directly benefited Senmartin and his family monetarily by a check of $450 and majority funding of hotel charges and Broadway shows.”

Zieg told the Keys Weekly, “I can’t remember who I heard it from, but (Senmartin) complained how expensive the trip was and how much he (Senmartin) was going to pay. That is a very clear and direct ethics violation to introduce legislation for your own or your family’s benefit.”

In a prepared statement for the Keys Weekly, Senmartin wrote, “I am disappointed that once again Councilman Zieg has chosen to continue his personal vendetta against me using taxpayer dollars and involving a City of Marathon employee. This is the second time Mr. Zieg has filed an ethics complaint and his fourth attack on me personally. It’s clear he has personal issues with me and that’s fine. But using the systems designed for important oversight of taxpayer money, to promote his personal agenda, is just wrong. Also, at some point the question of the City Clerk, Diane Clavier’s involvement in all of these incidents must, at a minimum, be addressed.”

A rough accounting of the trip shows it cost about $35,000. The students volunteered by bagging groceries and serving smoothies at the Marathon Seafood Festival for tips.

The remainder of the funds came from the city, various organizations such as churches and service clubs, and parent donations. The students, including Dante Senmartin, bought their own round-trip airline tickets costing about $300 and made a $200 down payment. A full accounting has not been provided by the Monroe County School District and the trip estimate is based on emails* from the trip coordinator to parents.

In his ethics complaint, Zieg included the minutes of the meeting when Senmartin requested the donation to the nonprofit as well as three pages of documentation from Marathon High School’s accounting system.

According to the Monroe County School District, Zieg made the public records request on March 31. The data the school district released includes the drama sponsor’s name, the name of the hotels and charges, the amounts of deposit and reimbursement, and all 16 students’ names including Dante Senmartin.

“I’m concerned that we inappropriately released student names as part of that data request. We should not be doing that,” said Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mark Porter.

Senmartin and Zieg have a contentious history. The city’s support of the New York City drama trip grew out of the city’s budget hearings in September 2019. The first $25,000 of city money went to the Guidance Care Clinic of the Middle Keys to help with building renovations. That was proposed by Zieg, who at the time was running for re-election, at the council meeting on Sept. 10. He said the money would be a good-faith gesture from the city to an institution that serves its populace. At the final budget hearing, on Sept. 19, Senmartin came back with a nonprofit funding request of his own for $25,000 — $10,000 for the Marathon High School drama club and $15,000 for the Marathon Rec Center. Both motions passed unanimously.

The only documentation provided in either scenario came from Senmartin. He provided an open (with no addressee) solicitation letter signed by the head of the drama club outlining plans for a student field trip to New York City in 2020.

At the time, the Keys Weekly asked city officials if there are any “strings” attached to the funds, i.e., requirements for how the nonprofits should spend the money once it was awarded. There was no response.

Zieg is open about his friendship with the founder of Guidance Care Center, Monroe County Commissioner David Rice.

“I believe (Rice) has donated some and in times when he and I visit socially I had mentioned that I would take it before City Manager Chuck (Lindsey) and then (Lindsey) suggested I bring it up at the council meeting,” Zieg wrote in an email on Sept. 16.

Senmartin also acknowledged at the time that one of his children is currently active in the drama club, and both children previously attended the after-school program at the Marathon Rec Center. On Sept. 24, Senmartin explained his reasons for supporting the Marathon High School drama club and Marathon Rec Center.

“I know the Marathon Rec Center has a $12,000 funding shortfall. Ask me if I want to support kids and the answer is yes; it’s a no-brainer.”

Three months later, in December 2019, the two Marathon City councilmen crossed swords again. Fifteen days after Zieg was reelected, on Nov. 20, he signed a notarized ethics violation alleging that Senmartin lied on a trademark application for the City of Marathon seal, and that he attempted to extort money from the City of Marathon.

On Nov. 25, cameras outside Senmartin’s business captured Clavier, who is in a relationship with Zieg, removing a sign that read “Drop Dan Zieg” from Senmartin’s business and putting the sign in a car with Zieg behind

the wheel. Between Nov. 27-29, Senmartin asked for the sign’s return and ended up pressing charges. On Dec. 2, Senmartin received the notice of the first ethics violation filed by Zieg.

Zieg and Clavier were charged with second-degree misdemeanors and have asked the judge to dismiss the case. The courts have yet to hear the motion.

The first ethics violation allegation has not been resolved. Senmartin said his unscripted remarks were taken out of context by Clavier in the ethics complaint and that he was exonerated by the minutes she herself took at the meeting, introduced into the record as part of the ethics violation allegation.

“It’s a small town, and my job as a city councilman is to help as many people as possible, especially the kids,” said Senmartin. “That money that went to the Rec Center and to the high school drama club helped probably about a hundred kids and by extension their families.”

Senmartin said he would reimburse the money.

“The money doesn’t matter. If that’s what’s deemed necessary (to pay the money back), I will,” said Senmartin.

Senmartin also calls attention to the city clerk’s role in the second ethics complaint, which she notarized, and the sign theft, for which she was suspended one week.

“I do not even interact with her when it comes to city business,” Senmartin said. “That presents a whole other problem because it makes it harder for me to do my job effectively without the clerk’s participation.”

The Keys Weekly asked Marathon Mayor Steve Cook whether the acrimonious back-and-forth affects Zieg’s and Senmartin’s job performance.

“I don’t know how to answer that. I see the same thing happening in Washington, D.C.,” Cook said. “I think this town is fairly used to bad blood. I don’t like it, it stinks, but we get our work done.”

Cook said the council needs to revisit its nonprofit donation policy. He said he doesn’t like the previous method of asking nonprofits to apply, and then ranking them for funding. He said he also doesn’t want to make equal donations across the board because the impact to each organization is diluted. And he said he questions whether it is even the role of city government to give away taxpayer money to nonprofit organizations.

“I don’t know what to do about it. I asked that we all (the council) play nice,” Cook said.

Senmartin has a year and a half left on his term and Zieg has two and a half years. At that point, both will have “termed out” and need to take at least a one-year hiatus before running for council again.

BRIEFLY MORE STATE COURT WORK TO OCCUR WITH REMOTE TECH Acting on the recommendations of a statewide Court Continuity Workgroup, Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady issued a new emergency order May 4 increasing the list of proceedings state courts, including in Monroe County, will accomplish by remote technology during the coronavirus pandemic.

It also extends the current suspension of jury trials in Florida until July 2. It makes corresponding changes to some legal deadlines by pushing them back until the Monday after the July 4 holiday weekend. Future extensions will be considered if needed.

For first-degree murder cases, the new order suspends until July 2 some requirements for in-person preliminary hearings and a requirement that defendants be automatically released from custody if prosecutors are unable to file charges within 40 days. The order especially focuses on increasing the resolution of cases by shifting as many of them as possible into a virtual environment with remote technology.

His high school buddy, Ray Rhash, says of all the antics, the one that sticks most is the one that happened some 40 years ago when Konrath wrecked his powder blue Corvette on the way home from the body shop.

onald “Ronnie” Williams Sr., 75, passed away on May 2, 2020. Ronnie and his wife Pauline made the Keys their home for over 50 years.

He was a staple in the community. Ronnie owned and operated Ronnie’s Fence and Fence Repair for over 40 years. His work ethic was unparalleled, but his family, close friends and his faith took precedence. Ronnie loved to ride motorcycles, spend time and plant trees in his yard, especially ponytail palms, and spend time with his family. He will be remembered for his generosity, his smile, his sense of humor and the love he had for his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife Pauline,

their sons Michael (wife Kelly), Christopher (wife Alison) and granddaughter Jamie DePaula (husband Bobby). His presence we will miss, his memory we will treasure, loving him always. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, there will be no public funeral at this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in your yard in his memory.

hey’re the frontline heroes throughout the pandemic. On May 13, they got together to show thanks and appreciation.

Fire trucks from Key Largo, Islamorada and Monroe County, Monroe County sheriff’s vehicles and local residents in cars drove through Mariners Hospital in Tavernier to exchange thank-yous with the many nurses and staff who stood on the sidewalk holding signs.

As sirens blared, hospital employees waved back in a show of gratitude. Following the parade, Rick Freeburg, CEO at Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals, Sheriff Rick Ramsay and State Rep. y first year in the Keys, I bemoaned the loss of seasons. I had grown up in the Midwest and spent another decade in the Mid-Atlantic.

I still can’t justify a down coat on any day of the year here, but after a while, I’ll admit I considered a 70-degree day in February to be chilly.

In a way, summer is our spring in that it’s the most pronounced shift.

And lucky us, because nowhere else in the United States does May count as its own season. Here, there are no telltale buds, stark green against dead brown, signaling the coming warmth, but there are screamingly bright flowering trees. May is also the lead-in to mango season, a revered holiday to anyone residing in South Florida. Locally, we celebrate the juicy gems with festivals and special recipes. Homeowners post warnings on their fences to deter kids from vaulting over to grab the fruit. If May in the Keys had

2 a color, it would be luscious orangeyellow.

Not to be upstaged by flora, fauna has its moment this time of year, too.

The sidewalks are practically carpeted with baby chicks and the waters teem with new life. Nurse sharks find shelter in the shallow seagrass fields of the Keys’ inshore waters. Right now, a cruise through those areas reveals dozens of pups, ranging from newborns (roughly 10” at birth) to slightly larger “teenagers.” Nurse sharks typically birth litters of 20-plus, but they only mate every 18 months. On Florida beaches, sea turtles are hatching now through October. (A shimmer of good news right now — reports have shown upticks in hatchlings around the world due to COVID-19-related beach closures). Locally, the diligent volunteers with the Key West Sea Turtle Club have continuously monitored the beaches throughout closures. This week, their efforts were rewarded when they discovered a loggerhead nest on Smathers Beach.

A glance up from the sidewalks and water reveals another seasonally related animal event. This past week, many Keys residents found dozens of tiny grey and yellow birds darting aimlessly, or sitting in the grass, slightly stunned. The winged visitors, according to Key West bird expert Mark Hedden, are American Redstarts, a migratory bird that passes over the Keys this time of year. These displaced guests are the result of a “migration fallout,” an event, caused by either severe weather or by the creatures’ own exhaustion, that prevents migratory

3 birds from reaching their intended destination. While fallouts are not particularly common, they do consistently occur during migration periods — often when strong spring weather is rolling around.

Birds aren’t the only migratory creatures in the Keys. Our ecosystem also plays host to snowbirds who tend to head back to their northern roosts around this time of year. The seasonal human exodus forces a shift in the cadence of daily life. Business revenues take a dip and friends have to bid temporary farewells, but the islands open up as half the population files out. There are fewer cars on the roads and fewer blankets on the beaches.

Coupled with calm seas and a steadily heating sun, all that new life, those colorful flowers and the slower pace take on a shine that can’t be found outside the Keys — May season. Enjoy it as best you can these days.

SOS FOOD PANTRY LAUNCHES ‘ST. PETER’S FLEET’

he leaders of the local Star of the Sea Foundation, known as the SOS Foundation and food pantry, are enabling out-of-work Keys charter fishermen to catch fish that will feed the hungry in their community.

Charter fishermen aren’t permitted to sell their catch without a state-issued saltwater products license that allows fishermen to catch a commercial amount of fish.

But the charter guys can certainly donate their catch — and officials at the local food pantry are putting them to work.

The SOS Foundation has launched St. Peter’s Fleet, a consortium of local charter fishermen who get paid a small amount of money — enough to cover their fuel, bait and tackle costs and pay a mate an hourly wage — to go out fishing and then donate their catch that typically includes dolphin, snapper and grouper.

“Our food pantry clients and 200 seniors under lockdown at Henry Haskins Seniors Housing on Kennedy Drive are enjoying fresh fish twice this week,” wrote SOS executive director Tom Callahan in a Facebook post about the emerging St. Peter’s Fleet.

The project is a partnership between the SOS Foundation and CareerSource, and the initial “test trips” involved Capt. Billy Wickers III of Linda D Sportfishing, which is based at Key West’s Charter Boat Row. The participating captains and mates receive $16 per hour plus $300 per trip to cover bait, ice and fuel, Callahan said, adding that

Fishbusterz fish house on Stock Island will weigh and process the fish for the captains.

“The way it’s set up is we just drop the catch off at Fishbusterz to be weighed,” said Wickers. “Our first few trips, we brought in 300 to 400 pounds of snapper and amberjack, and now we’re getting dolphin and grouper as well.”

Most of the fish is being cooked in the Callahan Community Kitchen behind Key West’s City Hall, and is incorporated into healthy, cooked meals for community members, including senior citizens.

Callahan said he envisions expanding the program to the Middle and Upper Keys, eventually employing about 50 captains and mates.

“We’re not really making money on this, but it lets us get out on the water and lets us help our community,” Wickers said. “This town and our industry have always had each other’s backs and it feels good to be able to help.”

ohn Murphy is repaying a debt.

A debt he incurred about 32 months ago when Hurricane Irma sent a 6-foot wall of seawater through his house.

“Kevin Goodwin brought a bunch of kids over to my house when I was trying to get the business up and running and cleaned it all out,” said Murphy, who co-owns and co-operates Florida Keys Air Conditioning with his partners Larry Smorgola and John Mahoney.

“I have fished with pretty much everyone in town over the years,” Murphy added. “And I know their industry is in a dire situation, which got me wondering what I could do to help.”

So late last week he masterminded a fishing event that would serve two purposes – provide a moment of respite and fun for Marathon’s health care workers and first responders and get some money into the pockets of local fishermen, like his buddy Capt. Kevin Goodwin.

Goodwin grew up in Marathon and has been fishing for about 31 years while raising a family in his hometown.

His business has weathered hurricanes and oil spills – but nothing like the pandemic.

“From January to July we make everything to get us through the year – about $25k a month that dropped to zero. I have fished three trips since all this started,” he said.

Goodwin has recruited some 25 charter captains to take first responders and health care workers fishing for “Local Heroes Tarpon Day.”

His buddy Murphy made 25 calls to 25 businesses – and secured 25 donations at $600 each.

“Once again Marathon is rising to the occasion to help one another. Not one business said, ‘No,’” he said. “A couple businesses are sponsoring two vessels – Superior Electric and Kelly Buick GMC. Those who couldn’t afford the $600 pitched in for T-shirts.”

The tarpon fishing is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, May 23 and will include the bridges from Long Key to Bahia Honda. Keys Fisheries will serve as the pickup and dropoff location for the anglers and each boat will receive a lunch donated by Publix and signature event T-shirts provided by other sponsors.

Murphy said the $600 each boat is set to make isn’t much, but it could go a long way in making car or boat payments or simply to feed a captain and his family.

“Every little bit at this point helps,” said Capt. Jason Long.

“When you are losing three to four thousand a day this will make a difference. We are all very grateful to those who are pitching in to make this happen.”

“And catching a tarpon is an experience you never forget for the rest of your life,” Murphy added. “If I can put a smile on a nurse’s face and put a little money in the pocket of a fisherman that is good enough for me.”

id you hear the one about the man who was buried alive? It was a grave mistake, or so the old joke goes. Most mistakes are not deadly, but some of them stick with us. When a single mistake overshadows a thousand good deeds, it is tragic. When that mistake shapes your legacy, it’s something even worse. Ask someone what they remember about Bum Farto, and the response will probably include drugs, a Hoffa-style departure, or his Key lime-yellow Ford Galaxy 500 LTD with mirrored tint, chrome hubcaps and an “El Jefe” plate letting everyone know he was “The Chief.” Unfortunately, these elements of Bum Farto’s story only

scratch the surface of a city leader who was loved, honored and respected on an island where all of those things are hard-earned.

Bum was promoted to Key West Fire Chief in 1964, taking over the four-truck, 40-man department from Charles Cremata. Farto wasted no time building a dedicated team and modernizing the department. Bunker coats with improved heat resistance, the latest gas masks, and self-contained tanks provided superior protection for his men. The fire department created a system that turned traffic lights near the station green with the push of a button, along with a hotline button to Farto’s home phone that required no dialing. “I answer all fire calls,” Farto told reporter Mike Powers in a 1966 Miami Herald article.

Farto was chief during a time when arson was common. He fought some of the most significant fires Key West has seen, including the First Baptist Church on Eaton Street, AME Zion Church on Whitehead, Curry & Sons, and the Convent of Saint Mary’s. Chief Farto introduced fire prevention education to the community, set up systems that helped lower fire insurance premiums, and brought training incentives to the department. The department was Farto’s life, and he let his men know how important they were to him by introducing 10-year, 15-year, and 20year service award pins. A newspaper feature described Bum’s well-polished

station, a chief’s office decorated with several pictures of John F. Kennedy, and a small sign taped neatly to the bookcase that read: Ulcer Dept. The article points out that, “Next to LaGuardia, (Farto) is history’s greatest firemanfan.”

On Sept. 2, 1975, Farto ordered the replacement of all foam mattresses in county jails because they would release dangerous cyanide gas if burned. He also ordered emergency exits and fire escapes to be installed at the Key West jail, knowing little that he was under investigation from several arms of the law. Farto found himself sitting on one of those mattresses when he was arrested just seven days later on Sept. 9, 1975.

Joseph “Bum” Farto made the mistake of selling drugs to an undercover agent and rewrote his legacy in that split second. Gone were historic buildings still standing because of his actions. Gone were the lives he saved.

Gone were the accolades that came with running the best fire department Key West had ever seen, and gone were the actions of a brave firefighter who spent more than half of his life putting the lives of others before his own.

One mistake sent the legacy of a champion fire chief up in flames.

But was it a grave mistake? Only time would tell.

here’s no limit to what a man can accomplish if he doesn’t care who gets the credit.”

This and similar statements have been attributed to President Harry Truman and others, but likely originated more than a century ago with a Jesuit priest.

Either way, it’s an appropriate sentiment for the group effort that will feed the hungry from 9 a.m. to noon this Thursday, May 14 at Key West City Hall, 1300 White St. in the rear parking lot.

Farm Share is teaming up with Caleb and Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation, Pirate Radio and the City of Key West to host a drive-through food distribution to support Florida Keys residents who are facing food insecurities during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re thankful for the opportunity to collaborate to feed hundreds of families in the Keys,” said Farm Share CEO Stephen Shelley. “We understand the need is still high for food and it’s an honor to serve the Key West community.”

Farm Share serves more than 2,000 partnering agencies and provides more than 88 million pounds of food annually – at no cost – with the help of thousands of volunteers. Farm Share serves all 67 counties in Florida through warehouses in Quincy, Jacksonville, Florida City, Homestead and Pompano Beach.

Recipients must arrive at the event in a vehicle with their windows up and their trunks open. All recipients must have a nose/mouth covering. No early admittance is available and all food will be distributed on a first-come, firstserved basis.

The following items will be provided: fresh produce, non-perishable canned goods, protein, water and juice.

here comes a time in every newspaper columnist’s life when he is staring at a blank computer screen, especially when said JOHN columnist is tired BARTUS of writing about coronavirus, when is a City of Marahe just says out thon councilloud, “What in the man. For the com younger readers, “ABC’s ‘Wide World of Sports’ was an American sports anthology television program that aired on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) from April 29, 1961 to January 3, 1998, primarily on Saturday afternoons. In 2007, ‘Wide World of Sports’ was named by Time on its list of the 100 best television programs of all-time.” (From Wikipedia) There is also the great Slim Pickens quote from the movie “Blazing Saddles,” when he exclaims, “What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here?” It’s a great movie, certain to make just about anyone forget our current situation. But I digress. And I still need some subject material.

When was the last time you heard a bad joke? Even better, when was the last time you retold a bad joke to your family and friends just to hear the groaning? Well, here are a few you can try out.

One of my favorite column topics throughout the years has been actual newspaper headlines.
