This week, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County has reported one case of dengue, and one fatal case of bacterial meningitis.

In the dengue case, the individual has received medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. According to news reports, the meningitis case was a toddler who attended a child care center on the Navy’s Sigsbee Park Annex. The center has been closed and cleaned; students must show proof of a medical clearance to attend when it is reopened.

COUNCIL AGREES TO MOBILE FOOD VENDOR PROGRAM JIM McCARTHY

slamorada council members gave approval to language allowing mobile vending within the village during the March 5 meeting.

Last December, the dais showed interest in a two-year pilot program with a limited number of licenses in the village. As it stood before, the village’s ordinances contained no language regarding food trucks and other mobile vendors.

Mobile vending is broken down into three categories: food trucks, which are mobile kitchens; canteen trucks, which sell premade food and aren’t subject to provisions; and food carts. Planner Megan Rumbaugh said canteen trucks are exempt from provisions of the resolution provided that vehicles are parked for a maximum of 15 minutes or less.

While the proposal stated that 15 licenses would be issued, council agreed to decrease that number to 10 with preference given to local food vendors during the initial three months of the program.

After that, council would be able to revisit the license issuance and allow trucks outside the local area to apply and obtain a license.

“I think local food vendors should get a weighted application to where they get priority for a license first,” said Mayor Mike Forster.

Mobile food vendors will pay an upfront, $250 registration fee, and they’re also required to provide a list of approved locations within 30 days of registration. Food trucks would need to be 50 feet away from the outside of the right of way, and wouldn’t be able to sell or dispense food to mobile vehicles like a drive-through.

“You want these guys to be successful,” said Craig Belcher, Islamorada resident who owns Craig’s food truck. “You don’t want them smack on the road, but you want them visible.”

The pilot program prohibits use of Styrofoam and single-use plastics. Trucks aren’t permitted to operate in public rights of way, from MM 72-79.7 and in residential zoned properties and unapproved locations. Vendors would need to remove trash daily from where they’re operating, and they would not be able to use sound amplifiers, balloons or streamers.

While councilwoman Deb Gillis supported looking at a pilot program, she said she’s still not convinced it’s a good thing for local businesses.

“The local restaurants have to have their buildings, insurance and overhead that the mobile people don’t have,” she said. “They have different things and different expenses, but it’s not the same thing. “ Councilman Chris Sante said getting food from a mobile truck is like using a drive-through. “You grab the food and you go,” he said.

Chris Trentine, owner of Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, noted that people who frequent food trucks don’t necessarily go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but rather something in between meal time. The brewery uses food trucks like A Moveable Feast on its property for people to enjoy with a drink.

“Honestly, if food trucks don’t partner with the right commercial place where there’s enough traffic, they won’t make it anyways,” he said. “They’re here to make money. If they don’t get in a wellestablished area, it will be hard for them.”

BRIEFLY Railway historian to speak at dinner The Matecumbe Historical Trust will host a prime rib dinner, followed by a lecture on “The Florida East Coast Railway: For 125 Years America’s Speedway to Sunshine” on Friday, March 27, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Islamorada Moose Lodge, located at 81573 Old Highway.

FEC Railway Company historian and professor Seth H. Bramson will tell the history of that line, from Flagler’s arrival in Florida to the Key West Extension and on to its current operation as the great railroad it is today. Trolley through time this weekend The Matecumbe Historical Trust “Trolley Tour through Time” rides on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 10 a.m. leaving from the Whale Harbor Restaurant, located at 83413 Overseas Highway. A monitor located at the front of the trolley shows more than 90 historic photos for comparison to the sites visited. The tour lasts about one hour. Seating is limited. Art programs at Key Largo library There will be still-life paint-ins at the library on three Saturdays, March 14 and 28 and April 18, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Numerous displays will be created. Artists can bring paints, pastels, sketchbooks and the medium they want to work in. In addition, the library hosts an “open studio” day every Tuesday at 1 p.m. Artists gather in the community room to work on their own projects, socialize and help each other. Author to discuss book March 16 Willie Drye will visit Hooked on Books in Islamorada on Monday, March 16 at noon to discuss and sign his book, “Storm of the Century.” It’s a chronicle of the most powerful hurricane ever to hit the United States. It came ashore with its eye centered on Islamorada on Labor Day in 1935. Drye is a journalist and author. At age 15, he encountered his first hurricane, when he went in October 1954 with his family to Long Beach, N.C., to help relatives whose home had been destroyed by Hurricane Hazel. he decision to run the Key West Extension of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad from the mainland to Key West altered the future of Florida’s southernmost archipelago. The Keys were no longer an isolated collection of islands connected to the outside world solely by boats dependent on tides and weather to bring mail, food staples and visitors. The celebrated arrival of the train to Key West occurred on Jan. 22, 1912. It would come earlier to other islands in the chain. In 1908, Henry Flagler’s train began running service to stations as far south as Knights Key, at the foot of what would become known as the Seven Mile Bridge, with departures scheduled at 5:40 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily.

Knights Key served as the temporary terminus for the railroad until the line was completed to Key West in 1912. It also operated as a major seaport, servicing not just the train, but steamships operating between Flagler’s railroad and Havana — just as Key West would in the years to come.

Work began at Knights Key in 1906. A newspaper clipping dated April 28, 1906 read, “A large number of workmen are now at work at Knights Key. They will build warehouses and docks there with the intention of making the Key a supply station. A large cistern and the big buildings are already on the Key and lumber and material for the other work is being hauled there in large quantities. The docks will be built on the west side and extend out to the 25-foot channel for the accommodation of deep draught vessels.” A story from the Florida Times Union dated Dec. 18, 1906 added, “Because of the large number of vessels visiting Knights Key with materials for the railroad extension work, the Key has recently been made a port of entry with Dr. Cotton as deputy inspector.”

Work on the Knights Key docks was interrupted by an October hurricane that took a devastating toll not just on work being done on the Key West Extension, but also on railroad workers.

The storm was first spotted over the Wind-

ward Islands on Oct. 11. The eye of the hurricane passed over Long Key on Oct. 17.

Near the center of the storm, winds were swirling at an estimated 100 mph. The Category 2 hurricane was tightly wound and it was reported that while a grove of coconut palms were snapped into splinters on Long Key, trees located 20 miles to the north and south remained upright.

Railroad workers housed in quarterboats, large “houseboats,” proved particularly vulnerable in the storm-affected areas.

Two houseboats loaded with 45 men each had been moored off of a work camp on Lower Matecumbe Key. Ripped from their moorings, the vessels were carried out to sea, but no loss of life was recorded.

The same could not be said for quarterboats moored on the Gulf side of the Long Key work camp.

Each housed 150 men. The vessels had been secured with six mooring lines and an anchor. According to Mr. W.P. Dusenbury, the civil engineer in charge of railroad work on Key Largo, it was 5 a.m. when the furies of the storm snapped the anchor chain and the two Long Key houseboats broke free.

One of the boats washed out into the Gulf, but was pushed back on to shore. House Boat No. 4, however, was blown into the Atlantic and out to the Gulf Stream. The vessel was pounded in the storm-driven swells until it splintered. In the end, only 83 men survived. Mr. Dusenbury was discovered clinging to a piece of wood and taken aboard the Austrian steamer Jennie before being transported to Key West.

Though progress was interrupted by the 1906 hurricane, once the Knights Key dock was completed, it stretched 4,000 feet out into the Atlantic and was large enough to accommodate warehouses, an office and depot building, as well as two sets of railroad tracks. Two trains and two ships could use the dock at any one time. A post office and telegraph station opened at Knights Key on May 27, 1908. When the tracks and bridges that finally linked the mainland to Key West were completed and daily service was established, the Knights Key dock became obsolete and was ultimately abandoned and destroyed.

he 2020 election year is bound to be a busy one with races for federal, state and local offices. In Islamorada, five seats on the dais are up for grabs, and four of those spots will see new faces, with Deb Gillis terming out and Chris Sante, who’s filling out the rest of Cheryl Meads’ term, declaring that he won’t seek office. Candidates filed for office as early as last July and as recently as early February.

The Weekly recently spoke to candidates and posed the following questions to each. Here’s what they had to say.

1. 4-plus years.

2. I am an interior designer and real estate agent.

3. Attending village council meetings for almost two years and listening to what issues are important to the different members of our community who live on four very different islands, I thought on how I could bridge the gaps and lend my expertise. I will address voter concerns on fiscal responsibility and keep voters informed. The beautification of our islands, especially what you see from the highway, will be a major concern. 4. I will listen to the issues which are presented to the council. I will study the issues and proposals prepared by our village administration, as well as communications brought by council members, and concerns presented by our community.

Never dismiss a topic of concern, an idea, a suggestion, anything that may impact one citizen of Islamorada.

5. One of the main issues we are facing is the constant traffic, the speed of cars, and not being able to egress in and out of neighborhoods during the day, and especially on weekends. Key locations where a traffic light, a stop sign, or pedestrian crosswalk is needed, must be addressed with FDOT. 6. The unique character of Islamorada lies in the five islands which make our village. Every island is an entity which is very different from the others.

I would like to unite all of the islands, by bridging the gap which occurs by each islands’ insulation and isolation. The protection of private property, and the quality of life will be addressed. Helping all, no matter which portion of the village we live on.

PETE BACHELER

1. 35 years.

2. I’m a private land-use planner and commercial photographer.

3. After 6-and-a-half years as chairman of the Village Land Use agency (LPA), the next step is council.

4. I can bring 35 years experience in permitting in the Keys and Islamorada provides an extensive background in Keys development and history.

5. The biggest issue is 2023 and the termination of residential permits and the changes it may bring.

6. Our environment and weather make our community very unique and fluid. We should continue the current direction of our council as they are preserving our community and character.

SEAT 2 MARK GREGG

1. 35 years.

2. I am a mostly retired real estate lawyer and part-time commercial fisherman.

3. Four of the five sitting council members are not seeking re-election, so the new council taking office in November would benefit from someone like me who has previously served on the council.

4. Experience. I have practiced real estate and business law in Islamorada since 1987. I previously served on the village council from 2000-04, including a year as mayor and a year as vice mayor. I also served on the first Village Land Planning Agency (LPA) from 2000-02, which along with village council, wrote the first Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Village Land Development Regulations and village code, most of which are in effect today. In 1998, I

built the first three affordable houses permitted by the village. I am currently serving as member of the LPA and Achievable Housing. I’m also a founding member of Florida Bay Forever.

5. I believe that a severe lack of affordable housing is the root of several problems and MUST be fixed. An ordinance that would allow homeowners to rent out “granny flats.” known as accessory dwelling units would go a long way towards keeping existing homeowners in place while providing low income, low impact housing for our workforce without the need to clear and develop vacant land.

6. We place great value on our natural scenic beauty with an emphasis on limited development that protects residents’ quality of life over maximum build out. We have tried to support locally-owned businesses and maintain a small town feeling. I will work to preserve and enhance our water s and sensitive habitats through strict, but fair environmental regulations and land acquisition, and promote and assist existing small businesses by relaxing or eliminating stale and burdensome regulations that drive up the costs of doing business. I will also fight against unwanted outside influences such as those who disregard our right to quiet enjoyment of life by taking away our local control of vacation rentals.

SEAT 3 JENNY BELL-THOMSON 1. 47 years 2. For the past eight years, I have been the admitting manager at Mariners and Fishermen’s Community Hospital (two years). I am retiring from that position on April 1. Previously, I was with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for 26 years, retiring with the rank of captain in charge of the Upper Keys district.

3. I have a passion for public service. To be one small part of a decision-making body working toward the continuation of our quality of life while keeping the best interests of our residents and visitors at heart would be very fulfilling. I realize this is not without its challenges, though, and I’m prepared to do the hard work and make decisions that might not be popular.

4. Government experience. Small business owner experience. Lots of local, historical knowledge; old and new friends from all walks of life who can provide perspective on issues. An open mind with a willingness to hear all sides. Ability to drill down on issues for better decision-making. Parent of college-aged children who grew up here and attended public schools. A sense of humor.

5. Water quality. I wouldn’t presume to suggest I can fix it but we have to start somewhere — we have to take a stand. This will take years of continued partnerships with local, state and federal governments and private concerns using solid science and continued research.

6. The people who work here. The flora and fauna. And in particular, the growing number of unique, locally-owned businesses which set our community apart from the rest of the Keys. They

not only add an element of attraction to outside tourism, but also provide an added dimension to the local community, giving us all a richer, more diverse choice of activities and interests to participate in.

SEAT 4 KEN DAVIS

1. Other than three years in the Middle East, I have always called the Florida Keys my home.

2. I was an agent in charge of the Florida Keys DEA, then I spent three years as intelligence director for the U.S. Army in Baghdad where I led a 30-person unit.

3. I think we’ve done a lot of good over the past year. As the last man standing on this council, I believe this council has done outstanding work by working as a team together. The village is doing well, we’re getting back on our feet from the storm. We took care of the biggest issue, which was the Fills, which has been a 20-year problem.

4. I believe I bring experience having lived in various areas of the U.S. and parts of the world. I believe I bring the leadership qualities as this office requires. Most of all, I have the time to commit my full time to the dais.

5. Facing the village right now going into 2023, what are we going to do about people who own property and are not going to be able to develop when the state cuts off all permitting? Those people are going to file Bert Harris lawsuits. What do we need to do to make sure we are not held liable? The village was incorporated after the ROGO was set by the state. We inherited this but we're going to do everything we can.

6. We live in paradise. It’s not paradise because we have the most beautiful water and sunsets.

It’s paradise because of this community that always comes together.

SEAT 5 LARRY ZETTWOCH 1. I bought a home in 1988 and have been here the whole time.

I worked in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was out of town quite a bit. I’ve been voting down here since 1989.

4. I’ve been serving in Islamorada for years. I’ve been on the board at the library, so I talk to a different group of people over there. I’ve been a board member of the Moose for six-plus years. I talk to a different group over there. I’m a volunteer fireman and I teach every month for them.

I come across a lot of people, and I hear their concerns.

5. We got two issues in my opinion. The one in your face is traffic, the other is surrounding waters and the reefs. The reefs need protecting.

The bay needs more water. I’ve been a boater since ’88, so I'm on both sides and I taught scuba at Plantation Yacht Harbor. The bay is what concerns me right now and salinity of water, we got to help it. It’s our livelihood and we’ve got to bring it to the forefront. Council has to be vocal about this.

6. It’s a water community, whether backcountry, scuba or deep water fishing. It’s all about water.

That’s why I moved here. I used to be in the water every day. It’s a wonderful boating committee, it’s a great scuba community. That’s what I love about it. At the same time, we have rules, and I love that. I also love that the village is trying to take over FIlls, that’s a unique place.

2. I’m retired from FedEx where I was a domestic and international pilot for over 30 years.

Prior to that I was a fighter pilot in the USAF and SCANG. 3. First and foremost, it is my strong belief that it is an obligation of citizenship to contribute to the community in which one lives. Having had the opportunity to interface with the Village Council and staff over the last several years as a member and president of the Port Antigua Property Owners Association Inc., (PAPOA) I feel I could, if elected, help smooth the transition as at least 80% of the 2021 Council will be new faces.

As the leader of the association representing the over 4,000 FedEx pilots for nearly 10 years and president of the PAPOA representing over 300 property owners on Lower Mat for two years, I have refined my ability to bring diverse groups of people with sometimes conflicting objectives together through honest, open and respectful interaction.

5. Identifying the biggest issue facing the village depends on who you’re asking. If you are a charter captain, it might be the deteriorating water quality in Florida Bay and the near shores of Islamorada. If you are a young working family trying to get established in our beautiful community, it’s probably the shortage of affordable housing. If you ask a current council member, they might say strengthening our community’s ability to address these and every challenge we face by resisting the state of Florida’s attempts to weaken or eliminate home rule. My approach to resolving problems is a threefold process. First, reach agreement with all stakeholders to define the problem. Second, utilize all resources available to assess all options for addressing the problem.

Finally, work to achieve consensus on the most viable solution and implement.

6. Being the “Village of Islands.” Four gems with the Everglades National Park and Florida Bay to the north and the cobalt blue Gulfstream and Atlantic Ocean to the south. One of the biggest challenges to keeping our unique home one of the most desirable communities in the Keys is finding a way to have visitors and residents alike be responsible stewards of our fragile environment while enjoying its abundance.

hanks to a swift response, a mother and daughter are safe and an injured turtle is on its way to recovery.

The first rescue occurred during the late afternoon on Feb. 21. Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers were dispatched to a 911 call of two female paddleboarders in distress a mile-and-a-half offshore of Indian Key near Islamorada. Responding to the call was Officer Bobby Dube as he launched a vessel during a small craft advisory.

Dube communicated with Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and FWC dispatches on the updated location of the two paddleboarders until the 911 call was dropped. Dube was able to get a general location, and after a lengthy search, a good samaritan boater and he were able to locate the mother and daughter, who were clutching one another.

The two were uninjured but scared, cold and wet.

The mother told Dube on the way back to shore that they wanted “quality mother-daughter time together.” Dube said the two were lucky they had a cellphone on them to call 911 when they could no longer paddle against the high winds, as they were drifting out to sea.

Just last week, FWC officers were called near Alligator Reef Lighthouse for the report of an injured turtle. The call came from a Officers approach couple who were on their personal an injured green sea watercraft and discovered the turtle by the name of sea turtle struggling to swim. The “Aldo Leopold” last couple called the Turtle Hospital, week near Alligator which then contacted FWC. Reef. CONTRIBUTED Officers responded and rescued the turtle, bringing it to shore to meet up with staff from the hospital. The green sea turtle, named “Aldo Leopold,” was taken for treatment and rehabilitation until it makes a full recovery and can be released back to the ocean.

Cane developed her love for the fire service while being a Fire Explorer at Marathon High School. After graduation, she became a volunteer firefighter for the City of Marathon. She became a certified firefighter through the Monroe County Fire Academy and began her career with Monroe County Fire Rescue in 1999. In 2018, she transferred to the Fire Prevention Division, where she is currently a deputy fire marshal in the Upper Keys. A quote she lives by is, “Do what’s right, even when no one is looking.”

heriff’s Office Bureau of Corrections Capt. Jon Crane has been selected by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission as its 2019 Accreditation Manager of the Year.

“I am extremely proud of Capt.

Jon Crane as he deserves this honor,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ram-

say, citing Crane’s “daily dedication to maintaining our accreditation status.”

Crane started working for the sheriff’s office in 1998. In the community, he is an active participant in Leadership Monroe and his annual bicycle drive during the holidays provides hundreds of bicycles to children and others in need.

The Bureau of Corrections holds professional accreditation on a state and national level. The detention facilities in the Keys — Plantation Key, Marathon and Key West — have an average daily population of about 560. The sheriff’s office employs some 136 certified detention deputies.

The sheriff’s office is accredited by five agencies and is a Triple Crown Award winner, for its simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Correctional Association, The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

SWITCH TURNED AT HARRY HARRIS PARK

onroe County Commissioner Sylvia Murphy joined the Monroe County facilities maintenance department at Harry Harris Park in Key Largo on Feb. 22 to turn the lights on for the first time since Hurricane Irma.

“The facilities maintenance crew has been working tirelessly since the hurricane to get our parks and beaches back to their pre-hurricane glory,” said Willie DeSantis, director of facilities maintenance. “Each milestone, like this one, is filled with the hard work of our employees.”

Hurricane Irma severely damaged the entire oceanfront park. The Monroe County facilities maintenance crew worked diligently last year to have the park reopened for Little League season. Now, games and practices that run past sunset can be completed.

Repairs to Wilkinson Point and the swim area jetty are in the design phase.

lint Barras may be a political newcomer, but he’s been paying attention and has rolled out his campaign, website and political platform.

Barras is the first Democrat to enter the District 120 race to replace Republican Florida Keys State Rep. Holly Raschein, whose time in Tallahassee will end due to term limits following the current legislative session.

Raschein’s seat is one of nine occupied by Republicans who cannot or will not seek reelection, making those seats vulnerable to Democrats, who

are hoping to claim a majority in the Florida House of Representatives.

Barras is vice president of business development for Two Oceans Digital, a Key West-based digital marketing company that specializes in web design, website creation and online marketing strategies. The company handles the digital marketing efforts for the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

Barras has filed his candidate paperwork with the state elections office.

Thus far, Barras, whose wife, Lynn, is principal of the May Sands Montessori School in Key West, faces a trio of Republicans. Those include attorney Alexandria Suarez, Islamorada Village Council member Jim Mooney and Ocean Reef candidate Rhonda Lopez, who, according to FloridaPolitics.com, has been the the top fundraiser in the race so far.

In addition to his work at Two Oceans Digital, Barras has served as vice chair of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council.

He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston College and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies.

indley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is hosting a celebration that people don’t want to miss. On Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the park and its rangers will host a fun-filled day to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Florida Park Service, and everyone’s invited.

The free community event includes all the makings of any good party at a state park: ranger-guided nature hikes, guest speakers, activities for children, educational exhibits and a free native plant giveaway.

Windley Key is known for being one of the locations where Flagler quarried limestone rock to build Overseas Highway, said Becky Collins, park scientist. The “Key Largo Limestone” rocks were later polished and used for building facades, becoming trendy in the area.

“When you walk down into the quarries, you are actually walking into ancient coral reef,” Collins said.

“You can see all kinds of ancient coral formations in the walls, from brain corals to star corals. Rangers focus on this unique historical and geological history on our guided tours.”

“Because of this, Windley Key joined the Florida Parks Service as a unique geological state park,” said Lu Dodson, park manager for the Islamorada area state parks.

All four Islamorada area state parks will be celebrated at the free community event, with guest speakers highlighting unique stories from each. Brad Bertelli will give a history of Indian Key Historic State Park and Matthew Lawrence from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will speak about the shipwreck in San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park. Susan Kolterman will discuss how to landscape with native plants, a nod to Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park.

“We want people to leave with an idea of all the different ways they can experience the area parks, from lectures, walks, talks, drawings and all kinds of fun things,” Dodson said.

“We also have over a mile-anda-half of wonderful hiking trails,” Collins said. “It’s a perfect way to spend a day outdoors but out of the sun.”

With a full day of fun and activities, there will be something for everyone at Windley Key Day. The educational village will showcase the work of environmental organizations. A special kid’s section under the trees in Flagler Quarry will have Junior Ranger activities, casting practice, a birding basics program, and a live animal presentation by the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center.

A silent auction features a signed Giclee print by local artist Pasta Pantaleo, who started his career at Windley Key. “Pasta feels a special affection for this area, so he donated a limited edition, gallery-wrapped Giclee,” Dodson said. “He will be there to personally present to the winner.”

The festival will close with a cake-cutting (and free cake for everyone).

hey serve the Coast Guard as a volunteer organization, and they’re seeking new members to join in many activities, from vessel safety checks and boater courses to training support and educating students.

Serving the Upper Keys from Key Largo to Long Key, Flotilla 13-8 is one of the more active fleets within the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. With 100-plus volunteers serving in operations and public affairs, the auxiliary is seeking men and women of all ages to join. For Flotilla Vice Commander Peter Fickinger, the sociability factor is what he enjoys most about it all.

“What I get out of it is pleasure meeting new people and promoting the value I firmly believe in,” he said.

“We go to schools and talk to little kids about swimming and life jackets.

I’m pushing 80. I enjoy working with younger people; it keeps you younger.”

Fickinger said the auxiliary has two major functions: public affairs and educating people on boating safety, as well as operations and assisting Coast Guard air stations in training exercises.

On the operations side, Fickinger said volunteers essentially learn how to be a Coast Guard member. In the Upper Keys, the flotilla works with Islamorada Coast Guard Station and Miami Coast Guard Air members during training.

“It’s really exciting. They work with the Coast Guard while out at sea, picking up dummies as they conduct search and rescues together,” he said.

“When they go to work, it’s like going through basic training. They have to respond to Coast Guard commands.”

On the public affairs side, volunteers conduct boater safety education courses throughout the year. They also conduct inspections on boats for people whenever, wherever. While the

auxiliary is not an enforcement agency, Fickinger said members work closely not only with Coasties, but also with Monroe County sheriff’s deputies and Florida Fish and Wildlife officers who patrol the waters.

“If I see someone breaking the law, the Coast Guard will be there,” he said. “We are the good guys. We’ll go out and inspect boats, and if they fail, we say get it fixed, come back and we’ll pass you. That is probably the best service we do.

What’s in it for volunteers? Fickinger said it’s the pride of being a part of the U.S. Coast Guard and working side-by-side with Coasties and auxiliary members, as well as the training and education experience and giving back to the community and country.

“I’m excited about the Auxiliary,” Fickinger said. “It’s been wonderful for me meeting great people and taking part in a great cause.”

Right before World War II, the U.S. Navy took over the Coast Guard in 1939. In doing so, all Coast Guard job duties were left open. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

PODCASTING FINDS ITS PLACE IN PARADISE

From Dr. Phil and Bill Burr to Shaquille O’Neal and Alec Baldwin.

So what’s all the fuss, and what the hell is a podcast, anyway?

The term comes from a combination of the words iPod (remember those digital music players that preceded everyone’s smartphones and Spotify accounts?) and the word “broadcasting.”

Once largely confined to the realm of the ultra-hip tech crowd, podcasting has been growing exponentially in the past five years.

There are more than 820,000 of these internet talk radio shows that cover all topics from politics to parenting, music to murder mysteries. Much of the popularity stems from the ability to save or download a podcast episode and listen later, with no need to be there for the live broadcast.

And at least three of those podcasts are coming from both ends of the Florida Keys.

Lisa Malcom is a Key West-based marketing and business consultant. In recent months she has expanded her resume to include “podcast producer,” having completed a comprehensive course on producing, recording and editing her new podcast, “Kick in the Yes.” But Malcom’s biggest thrill is interviewing guests for her 20-minute (give or take) episodes that are relatable to her listeners and have dealt with real-life, realworld decisions and decided to embrace the “yes” rather than remaining in their comfort zones, which aren’t always that comfortable.

Malcom has interviewed everyone from a Colorado hemp farmer to a Key West newspaper editor, and the responses she has received from complete strangers have been beyond encouraging, she said.

Upper Keys podcasters Melinda and Ryan Van Fleet echo Malcom’s sentiments about any time she hears from a listener she’s never met.

Melinda Van Fleet has been hosting the weekly podcast Good Karma Success Coach since April 2019, while Ryan launched Good Karma Sportfishing podcast to coincide with his charter fishing business a bit earlier, in August 2018.

“It’s been an amazing learning experience,” the Van Fleets both said, emphasizing that the most important key to successful podcasting is consistency.

“The average podcast doesn’t last more than seven episodes,” Melinda said.

“And it takes a commitment, but we really enjoy it and in Ryan’s case it’s been an incredible tool to help his primary business.”

Neither the Van Fleets nor Malcom are selling ads or sponsorships on their podcasts, a personal decision that’s based on goals and motivations.

Ryan offers five-minute tackle tips and longer fishing stories about what’s in season, and what was biting on his previous charter.

“It’s amazing to see where our listeners come from: Australia, Afghanistan, South America, you name it,” he said.

“And it feels great to make a personal connection with someone who really likes what we’re doing.”

The Van Fleets attribute their success to the Podcasters’ Paradise online class for beginners.

That's why I let people know in advance that although suggestions are acknowledged, it's best to go with the guide's gut about what to fish for.

On the offshore side of the island, the biggest sailfish tournament of the year, known as the Jimmy Johnson “Quest for the Ring” Fishing Championship Week was this past weekend with over 100 boats fishing it. The winner of the tournament was a beautiful sportfish by Team Sandman, out of Fort Lauderdale, who caught 12 sailfish in a matter of two days. I heard reports of several kingfish, mahi and tuna caught as well in the tournament, but as for the sailfish, it was mildly slow fishing. This time of the year as we hit the tail end of our cooler water and start to have rising air temperatures to go along with it, offshore fishing gets slow until the tunas start to show up thick on the humps again.

As we start to see the winter time finish line and work our way into the spring, soon it will be time to put some boardshorts on and go looking for tarpon at the bridges, and mahi in the gulfstream. I can't wait!

Walk supports cystic fibrosis research The Redbone Island Walk will take place on Saturday, March 14 at Founders Park, MM 87, Islamorada to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Participants can walk 3.1 miles, or as far as they like.

Registration is at 8 a.m., with a complimentary barbeque at 11 a.m.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects 30,000 children and young adults in the United States. More than 10 million Americans are unknowing symptomless carriers of one copy of the defective CF gene; it

takes two copies of the gene for a child to be born with CF. Since the Redbone first began in 1988, the average life expectancy has gone from early teens to 40 years.

There is no cure for cystic fibrosis.

More information, including registration, is online or from the Redbone office at (305) 664-2002. Participants also may register in person the day of the event. Each participant who raises $25 or more will receive a Redbone Island Walk T-shirt.
