rom retail to food, mobile vendors are popping up throughout the country, state and Keys. With inquiries increasing in Islamorada, council members will consider a pilot program that would give licenses to 15 mobile vendors to start.

As it stands now, the village’s code of ordinances contains no language pertaining to food trucks, nonmotorized food carts and other mobile vendors. Per the proposal, mobile vendors would be required to obtain a license from the village at a cost of $250. They’ll be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Areas where mobile vendors sit must have written consent from the property owner before applying. Locations will be permitted only within nonresidential zoning districts.

The mobile food vendor must also have the necessary licenses from Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, state Health Department and state of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Discussion on the matter was last heard in December as village staff and associate planner Megan Rumbaugh sought direction regarding mobile food vendors in the village. Three options were outlined: a two-year program, allowing vendors or prohibiting all or select mobile vendor activities.

ris said many of the inquiries for mobile vending came from local businesses interested in having a food truck on their property. Staff didn’t recommend mobile vendors on vacant parcels, rights of way or between MM 72 and 79 due to the recent cleanup efforts at the Fills.

“The issue of vacant land, we want these food trucks to be attached to an existing business in some manner so there’s accountability,” he said. “What’s going to keep them from parking in a vacant lot that we don’t know if they’re supposed to be there or not?”

Mayor Mike Forster spoke in favor of the twoyear pilot program and special events and suggested the definition of mobile vendors address the various types.

Vice Mayor Ken Davis said food trucks provide healthier options for those who typically are on a time crunch or a quick lunch break and frequent convenience stores or fast-food joints.

“I don’t see it hurting the brick and mortar,” he said.

“If I have a choice of stopping somewhere like a good (food) truck, or McDonalds, I’m stopping at the truck.”

Councilwoman Deb Gillis said she wants to keep it from being a nuisance along U.S. 1. She said Islamorada has always been based on a little higher standard.

“I don’t want to erode that,” she said.

hree Republican candidates for board of county commissioner debated for close to an hour and a half on Feb. 25 inside the Coral Shores Performing Arts Center. Hosted by the Upper Keys Republican Club, the inaugural debate featured Mike Forster, Islamorada mayor; Robby Majeska, Keys Kritters owner and Key Largo sewer board member; and Jose Peixoto, longtime Key Largo resident who previously ran for Congress and state representative.

Developing and maintaining the Keys were at the heart of several questions toward the middle and later parts of the debate. Last year, county commissioners agreed to allow structures within Ocean Reef to exceed the maximum height limit to 60 feet. Candidates were all on the same side when asked whether it’s acceptable for one community to build higher than the rest of the county.

“Not at all,” Peixoto said. “We should have the same standards for all of the Keys from Ocean Reef to Key West.”

In general, Majeska acknowledged that he isn’t a fan of the height restriction. “They made every house go fat. Now, it doesn’t matter if they’re a one or two-story, you can’t see through it,” he said. “I’d be more for a setback that’s smaller so people can see through houses.”

An arduous building permit process also took center stage. Building and remodeling in the Keys can be quite challenging at times with all the hurdles to overcome. When asked how they’d streamline the system and bring accountability back to the department, candidates all acknowledged that it must be user-friendly first and foremost.

“There’s a law and there’s either a lenient style or there’s a more aggressive style,” Forster said. “What’s wrong with being more lenient as long as it’s in the law? Why not say, ‘What can I do today?’ as opposed to saying, ‘No you can’t do this.’ We need to take a look at the building department to make sure it’s more friendly.”

Majeska said the department is totally funded by fines and fees they collect, and he can’t understand how that’s allowed to happen.

“Now, the more fees and fines they get, the more people they can hire and the bigger salaries and the bigger department they can build,” he said. “It should be when you go to the building department, they should say, ‘Hey, how can I help you?’”

Candidates also addressed top concerns they’d incorporate into the county legislative agenda during the state legislative session in Tallahassee. Peixoto and Forster noted during their responses that they’d like to have a state representative and senator representing Monroe County solely.

“Fortunately for the last eight years, we have had Holly leading us,” Peixoto said. “Before, we had someone else from Florida City.

They only come down here when it’s time for election and then they forget. I ran for Congress before, and I’d hear candidates. They don’t care about the Keys. They care during elections.”

In his explanation, Forster noted that Monroe is a donor county, contributing in excess of $200 million a year in sales tax to the state. He said only a little of that returns to the islands.

“I don’t know if I will ever see that day, but it makes more sense that we have someone deal with our interests only and not worry about Florida City, Homestead and Dade County because we are unique and we are in an area of state critical concern. Our carveouts are different than others.”

Majeska said the Keys give more tourism money to the state budget than any region except Orlando and Disney attractions.

“We need to be able to get a bigger chunk of that money back,” he said.

“Number 1, we need to work out ROGO; No. 2, we need to worry about sea level rise; and No. 3, we need to worry about our roads.”

At the last BOCC meeting, Dr. Jonathan Gueverra showcased an architectural drawing of the new Upper Keys Center of the College of the Florida Keys. The new center will be constructed like the emergency command center (EOC) planned for Marathon, said Gueverra. “It will be the largest building you see coming into the Keys off the bridge,” he added. wo main obstacles to keeping a skilled workforce in the Keys are adequate affordable housing and vocational training. In February, the BOCC voted in favor of increasing both.

In a late, split 3-2 vote, the commissioners chose to begin the process of accepting 300 affordable housing allocations from the state.

Staff was additionally advised to keep exploring the potential of converting existing market-rate allocations into affordable ones.

In terms of workforce education and training, the BOCC heard an update from Jonathan Gueverra, president of the College of the Florida Keys (CFK), before voting to allocate funds to the college.

Gueverra showcased the new architectural rendering of CFK Upper Keys Center. Proudly, he said, “We’ve talked about it for a long time. We’re working very diligently to make this a reality. We’ve been waiting for this project for 20 years, and the Upper Keys deserves this.”

The 3,800-square-foot building is being built in Key Largo to replace classroom space currently used at Coral Shores High School for CFK’s educational programs, Gueverra said. He added that the education of “our people betters them to have gainful income.”

Prefacing the agenda item the commissioners would soon vote on, the president added, “Half a million dollars over the next few years goes a long way to making this dream a reality.” The BOCC was deciding whether to approve an agreement with CFK for a $500,000 capital investment project for the CFK Upper Keys Center. Following discussion,

the BOCC voted unanimously for the investment.

At the meeting, Dottie Moses of Key Largo noted her objection to the process but not the project.

She asked why the money from the county wasn’t going to other priority items like the restoration of Rowell’s Marina.

County Administrator Roman Gastesi assured Moses and the public that county funds for CFK were being responsibly spent, with $250,000 being funded this fiscal year and the same amount in FY 2021. Gastesi noted money also had been allocated to other public projects, including Rowell’s, new libraries and road rehabilitation programs.

Mayor Heather Carruthers applauded the local education project.

“This is for people to learn here and stay here, so we don’t have to schlep in contractors from the mainland who don’t know how to build here,” she said. “We do it differently down here.”

Speaking directly to Gueverra, she added, “Clearly, it’s a great need in our county, and I want to thank you for your leadership.”

Sheriff Rick Ramsay also spoke in support of the new center as a benefit to the community. Ramsay emphasized his belief in the project, noting his department’s $100,000 donation to help make the center a reality. He said, “It will be better for people to stay local, educate local, and work local, who maybe couldn’t before. Maybe they can come back.”

Stephanie Scuderi, chairwoman of the college’s board, added, “This motion by the county to step up and put skin in the game provides further support to those who have come up to say this is important, so thank you very much.”

COVID HEALTH EXPERTS TALK PREVENTION PLANS

T

he U.S. has a standard disaster plan. Everyone who lived through Hurricane Irma knows it: the incident command system.

Within that plan are types of incidents — like hurricanes or pandemics.

“It’s part of our plan for the county, and the state and our federal government,” said Bob Eadie, head of the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County. He said he regards the possible spread in hurricane terms, as well.

“Right now, we are in the cone of uncertainty.

We know something is headed our way, but we don’t know what the final outcome will be. And we also know there are some things we need to be prepared for.”

Monroe County’s Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner and Eadie have been meeting weekly since January. This week, the conversation widened to include hospitals and county officials and other agencies to ensure all partners have the staff, training and supplies to respond.

And, if not, the specifics of their needs.

hat’s all the hype surrounding coronavirus? A local doctor says it’s the transmission more than anything.

Coronavirus, specifically COVID-19, can go undetected for two weeks. In some settings, the virus has an 85% chance to pass from an infected host individual or group to a particular individual or group. The virus spreads from person to person, primarily from close contact when people touch an "infected" object then touch their mouth or eyes.

Dr. Tom Morrison, emergency room director at Mariners and Fishermen’s hospitals, said there are some respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, but it is not the principal mode of transmission. Also, masks do not prevent exposure and can make the situation worse, Morrison said.

Reports are increasing across the country over possible and confirmed cases from Washington state and New York to Florida. Reports out of China say around 2 million have been affected. According to Morrison, COVID-19 has spread much more than is commonly realized. He said the World Health Organization estimates 10 million people have been affected by COVID-19 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a more conservative estimate of 6 million.

Is it the next worldwide plague? Morrison says “no.”

“The reality is the influenza virus remains a more sinister and serious outbreak,” he said.”In regards to treatment, the only treatment for COVID-19 is supportive care. For influenza, we do have the flu vaccine, which reduces symptoms and if you get the flu, Tamiflu to shorten the lifespan of the disease. Remember that other strains of coronavirus are known principally as the common cold and run with rhinovirus.”

As to where people could be more susceptible to coronavirus, Morrison said reports show that just over 40% of coronavirus transmissions have occurred in a hospital or health care setting. The CDC’s most recent report says that number could be as high as 60%, Morrison said.

When or how will the pandemic end?

John Nicholls, a professor of pathology at the University of Hong Kong, told CNN that the SARS pandemic ended in part because of environmental factors such as high temperatures and humidity. Scientists who have studied similar recent pandemics say the spread of the virus can end because enough people have become infected and then immune.

“When you look at where people are getting the virus from, they’re getting it from nursing homes, urgent cares, emergency rooms and hospitals,” he said. “Coronavirus requires a certain type of seclusion and a steady amount of presence for you to acquire it.”

Along with education about coronavirus, Morrison emphasizes the importance of hand-washing.

“Everybody is wearing masks, but they also need to be washing their hands after touching door knobs or shaking hands,” he said. “Only very certain types of masks are effective.

Most I see utilized in social media or the news are ineffective. Nothing can replace keeping your hands clean.”

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus (COVID 2019) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is novel, meaning new , first identified during an investigation outbreak in Wuhan, China. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus that causes the illness probably emerged from an animal source, but now is spreading person to person.

onroe County School Superintendent Mark Porter said he is working closely with the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County and doesn’t know whether a local school will have to close down if a student or staff member contracts coronavirus.

“The Florida Department of Health has the lead role here, and we’re in constant communication,” said Porter.

Two schools in suburban Seattle, Washington, closed for a day or more for “deep cleaning.”

Two other schools — one in Washington and the other in Oregon — closed after students or staffers contracted the disease. In Japan and Hong Kong, classes have been suspended, in some cases, until mid-April, and school districts and parents are home-schooling with the help of technology.

“That’s one of the things we’ve been looking at,” said Porter of the Keys school district plans. “We have devices that we can loan to students, but not every student has internet connectivity.”

Another concern? Spring break. It’s set for March 16-20.

“For many families, spring break is a time for travel outside the Keys. And we know that limiting travel decreases your chances of contracting coronavirus. Personally, I’ve canceled some long-standing plans to travel to Italy,” said the superintendent, who will step down at the end of the academic year.

On the bright side, Porter said, the coming break does give school officials some time to consider more preventive measures.

During a March 3 board meeting at the College of the Florida Keys, officials assured faculty and the board that the college has a plan in place to monitor and react appropriately to any new developments in the ongoing public health situation.

“With next week being spring break, we have plenty of students and staff with travel plans,” board member Kevin Madok said, recommending that everyone remain in close contact with airlines and destinations.

“Our insurance companies have already informed us that they will not cover school-sponsored travel to no-fly destinations,” college president Jonathan Gueverra said.

here’s no such thing as a minor sniffle aboard a cruise ship these days, and individuals planning to embark on a cruise vacation in the coming weeks, and possibly months, are being warned of additional screening and health precautions being taken to protect the traveling public.

Although the port of Key West remains open and receiving cruise ships, as of March 4, the behemoth people movers are under intense scrutiny and strict regulations.

The industry is taking direction from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Office of Customs and Border Protection, said Greta PhillipsFord of Caribe Nautical ship’s agents, which provision and supply cruise ships in Key West.

The CDC is telling travelers to reconsider cruise ship trips to or in Asia and warns travelers that they might find travel restrictions that will affect their ability to disembark and, possibly, may subject them to a quarantine imposed by local authorities.

Phillips-Ford pointed out that the cruise industry has dealt with contagious illness aboard ships before.

“Remember, there was the H1N1 virus and the highly contagious Norwalk virus,” she said.

“There’s a lot going on behind the scenes with regard to these ships.

They’re probably the most vetted industry in the world right now, answering to the CDC and Customs and Border Protection.”

cruise ships when they arrive have their temperature and will be turned away if they have even a slight fever, Phillips-Ford said.

“We get it,” she added. “Strict precautions are being taken. Fortunately, we don’t receive ships that have recently been to China, so that hasn’t been an issue.”

No garbage from a cruise ship is permitted to come ashore in Key West, and anyone exhibiting flu-like symptoms is being quarantined to their cabins, usually identified to authority by an alert cabin steward.

She also emphasized Key West’s designation as a port of call rather than a home port such as Miami, where cruise ships load and unload passengers and do a turnaround.

“Those turnaround ports are taking the brunt of the vetting,” she said.

As of March 4, there were no plans to close the port of Key West to cruise ships. The CDC website (cdc.gov) has several pages of information specific to controlling the virus on board ships.

Monroe County Airports Director Richard Strickland said there has been no noticeable difference in the number of passengers arriving in Key West.

He said the airport is following industry standards applicable to the pandemic and put out extra hand sanitizer. No U.S. airports have been closed down, but most international airlines have suspended flights to China, including American, Delta and United.

egislation that would strip local vacation rental control won’t cross the finish line this session, state Sen. Anitere Flores says.

Senate Bill 1128, as proposed by Sen. Manny Diaz Jr., and House Bill 1011 would preempt all regulation of vacation rentals to the state, including, but not limited to, the inspection and licensing of vacation rentals. Implications of a preemption by the state governing vacation rentals goes beyond fear of a Keys homeowner dealing with nightly, rowdy parties at a vacation rental next door; it also has impacts on home values and taxes.

While the House bill is on the special order calendar for Friday, March 6, legislation was postponed on the Senate side in the Rules Committee.

“The bill that was relating to vacation rentals that had some language that would have been pretty detrimental to the Keys, that bill seems to be done for session,” Flores told the Weekly.

“That’s something that I think is good. You can cross that off the plate this session.”

While legislation appears to be done this year, Flores says the matter will likely come up again.

Flores, who’s in her last year as senator, says she hopes whoever’s elected next year will push to get the carve-out for the Keys.

“I think there are certainly some parts in the state where there isn’t a good relationship with the vacation rental community and the local government,” she said. “I do think there will eventually be a bill that will try to bring a little more statewide regulation. But again, the unique nature of the Keys is going to be something that’s important to protect.”

Current Keys laws state there shall be no rentals of less than seven days in Islamorada and Marathon, or 28 days in unincorporated Monroe County.

In 2011, those rules were “grandfathered,” or allowed to stay on the books. However, state law says no municipality may change its vacation rental law — at all — without losing its grandfathered status and reverting to state law.

Since 2018, Monroe County has been pushing for an amendment to any bill that addresses vacation rentals. In essence, officials want a “carve-out” that would exempt state Areas of Critical Concern, which includes the Keys. (There are four Areas of Critical Concern in Florida, but only Monroe County has a substantial population.)

“We have 22 million people almost. We are a very diverse state,” he told reporters. “For us to be micromanaging vacation rentals, I am not sure that is the right thing to do.”

wenty-two fifth graders from Plantation Key School ventured away from the classroom to a village preserve Feb. 25. With large buckets in hand, students joined forces with members of the Islamorada Foundation for the first Island Stewardship Initiative at a village-owned preserve at MM 87, oceanside.

Students and foundation members spent the morning squeezing past dense trees and brush to snatch loose plastic, fishing lines, wire, golf balls, shoes and other debris. More than 15 full plastic bags were tied up and hauled to the side of the road for disposal.

JC Mikula, foundation chairman, said he couldn’t have been more pleased in the way students stepped up to partake in the initiative. The Islamorada Foundation, a nonprofit, strives to provide enhancements to village parks and preserve the community’s character. Mikula said there are two ways the foundation goes about its goals.

“Our first is acquiring, conserving and managing open space to support diversity, reduce density and enable passive recreation in the community,” he said. “The second is supporting and building stewardship of the fragile network of 19 miles of islands in Islamorada.”

Saylor Wampler, fifth-grader at PKS, held her bucket full of fishing line, bottles and caps. She said she enjoyed walking through the park and saving the environment.

“It’s a good thing to do,” she said.

“The more we are involved in cleaning up what we have, the louder message will be to everyone to get involved in protecting parks and green space on our islands.”

PKS principal Lisa Taylor said the community service initiative helps students gain a better understanding of the coastal ecosystem and the value of philanthropy and volunteerism.

“Sadly, our coastlines can become polluted, unsightly and dangerous to the near shore ecosystems and people who use them when tides and storms combine with illegal dumping or littering,” she said. “With limited resources, our school and students can partner with the foundation, other nonprofits and government to take collective action and keep our shoreline clean, vibrant and welcoming through the simple act of cleaning them up and encouraging others to do the same.”

All in all, Mikula said the kids “knocked it out of the park.” Among the larger items collected were buoys, poles and boards.

“We won’t perform a miracle with a morning of hard work but, with the support and participation of the schools, we hope to encourage more organized efforts to get our shorelines cleaned up and have everyone unite in fighting to keep our water lines free of trash and pollution discarded by the thoughtless few,” he said. “We look forward to a long partnership with Plantation Key Schools and Coral Shores High Schools on more stewardship initiatives.”

As part of the annual Financial Fitness Tournament hosted by Keys Federal Credit Union, five teams of students from Coral Shores High School competed against each other. As students challenged themselves to answer questions that many adults struggle with, they learned critical life skills to help them become financially independent and responsible. The winning team, sponsored by Keys Weekly, will face off against the top teams from Marathon and Key West, and the Keyswide winner will go to a statewide competition. The winning students all responsibly said they’d be saving their winnings for school.

MADELINE CHILTON, senior goalkeeper for Coral Shores’ district championship soccer team, is this week’s selection for The Upper Keys Weekly’s Female Athlete of the Week.

The three-year varsity starter in goal accumulated 121 saves on 152 shots on goal; she only allowed 31 goals in 18 games for a remarkable 1.72 goals against average.

“Madeline is an outstanding goalkeeper who has worked very hard at her position improving her goalie skills over many years by committing to extra goalie training, as well as playing for a number of club teams up in Miami,” said Pat Fazio, head coach. “I have really enjoyed having Madeline as our starting goalie these past three years and getting to watch her outstanding play. She has kept us in so many games that we have been out-matched by the volume of soccer player talent that these Miami private schools possess.” “I just love her effort and commitment she has given our team,” he continued. ”I wish her continued success moving forward with her soccer. She will be a standout at the college level as well.”

Chilton has accumulated a 4.137 weighted GPA while taking one of the most challenging academic schedules offered at CSHS. Her list of extracurricular activities is unrivaled; it includes Key Club, Interact Club, Unicef Club, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Youth Council, Environmental Club and Student Council senator, among several others.

She’s accumulated over 220 hours of community service including The Upper Keys Foundation’s hurricane relief missions, Special Olympics, The Upper Keys Rotary’s Gigantic Nautical Flea Market, all four years, and 14 other service participations.

R.J. LINDBACK , a three-sport standout at Coral Shores, is the recipient of this week’s Upper Keys Weekly Male Athlete of the Week. Lindback, who is currently serving as co-captain of the varsity boys tennis team, has drawn tremendous praise from head coach Kim Browning.

“R.J. is known for his determination and composure on and off the court, and he always exemplifies the meaning of being a respectful, team player,” Browning said. “His determination and endurance under pressure are what makes R.J. a special tennis player in our program.”

Lindback received the “Most Versatile Player” award at the Feb. 29 soccer banquet. Jorge Bosque, head boys soccer coach, said, “R.J. is an outstanding athlete who’s able to step in and play virtually any position of need for us.

Those kinds of guys are invaluable to a program.”

Pat Meyers, head cross-country coach, added, “RJ basically used crosscountry for soccer and tennis conditioning, but his leadership and competitive nature sort of jump out at you.

He’s an outstanding young man.”

Lindback possesses a cumulative 3.6 grade-point average. He and swim captain Colton Snodgrass recently won the school-wide science fair competition, which qualified them for district competition, which they also won.

They now will be representing all of Monroe County’s high schools in the statewide competition later this month in Orlando.

Considered a top youth angler in the area, Lindback has enjoyed competitive success in numerous local fishing tournaments. A recon diver, he has been actively involved in Coral Reef Restoration projects while also participating in several of The Upper Keys Foundation’s Coral Shores Athletic Missions, including Hurricane Irma relief, Hurricane Michael relief and multiple environmental cleanups.

New emergency management director starts job with coronavirus coordination SARA MATTHIS

s it an omen? When Marty Senterfitt took over as Monroe County’s Emergency Management Director, bam, Hurricane Irma. And just a few weeks after taking his spot, Shannon Weiner finds herself talking about coronavirus.

When the Keys Weekly newspaper asked if this was some type of precedent setter, Weiner said, “I hope not!”

Coronavirus, though, is no cause for undue alarm, Weiner said. (It’s pronounced “winer,” not like the hot dog). It is, she said, like any other potential disaster.

“Just like with hurricanes, we go through the four phases — mitigation, preparation, response and recovery,” she said, adding that her department and the state Department of Health in Monroe County have been monitoring the situation closely since January. Now, the efforts are beginning to encompass a wider circle of agencies. “Coronavirus is the flu, although it is a strain we’ve never had before.”

Here’s a little bit more about the Keys’ emergency disaster manager:

Are you a born-and-raised Florida girl? Pretty much. I was born in Italy when my dad was deployed over there with the U.S. Army as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist. When he came back, he wanted to work where he would eventually retire — Florida. So we lived in Boca Raton, Daytona, Sarasota, etc.

It was the first time I experienced that type of dichotomy.

Where did you go to school? I received both my undergraduate degree in history and master’s degree in business administration from the University of Tampa.

What was it like after Hurricane Irma? First, let me say that the professionals of emergency management are a tight-knit group. But it’s one thing to walk into somebody else’s emergency operations center, or somebody else’s disaster, than your own.

How did you come to work in emergency management? Well, I had no concept of the career beyond an understanding of what FEMA does. So I took a job with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and I literally got a call from that county’s emergency management director.

He said, ‘I’ll give you all the training you need.’

Sometimes career opportunities just fall out of the sky like that. And I love the career. It’s amazing.

Where did you go to next? I worked in the Sarasota Emergency Management Department from 2002 to 2005, and then I moved over to Lee County and worked there until 2011. That’s when we moved to the Keys. There weren’t any jobs in my field, but I knew I wanted this to be home. So, I took a job as an intelligence analyst with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and then was able to move to Emergency Management in 2016 as deputy director.

What was your first experience with disaster management? In 2004, I was assigned to help

What’s it like directing emergency management in the Keys? The geography makes it a unique challenge. Sometimes I think it would be much easier to work in a square county, surrounded on every side by another county instead of the ocean. In another respect, though, it’s easier because of our small-town culture.

We regularly work with law enforcement, utilities, schools, health agencies, hospitals, etc. We know each other already.

What brought your family to the Keys? Oh, definitely the water. We enjoy boating, swimming and spearfishing. My husband retired after a 33-year career in law enforcement and now works part-time with the MCSO in the major crimes division. My oldest daughter is at University of Tampa getting a degree in international studies and my youngest is at Sugarloaf School. I have two stepsons, also in Florida, one working as a lineman and the other in product development.

What’s your favorite disaster movie? “Sharknado.” Just kidding! Probably “The China Syndrome.” It’s sort of a what-not-to-do guide in a nuclear disaster.

What types of books do you like to read?

I love the Mitch Rapp books written by Vince Flynn.

When you’re not working, or not boating, what do you do? I run to clear my head. I try to sign up for one or two races a year, so that I have something to train for. But it really helps me deal with stress.

What’s something most people don’t know about you? I play the piano.

What’s something you would be terrible at?

Anything mechanical; I drop stuff all the time, which you wouldn’t think because of the dexterity required by the piano.

What’s three things you would take to a deserted island? Bread, I love to eat bread. A satellite phone? Can I take that? And my husband, he’s a handy guy.

What do you want the Keys’ public to know about the coronavirus? We are leaning forward. There are plans in place. The most important thing that the public can do is keep themselves healthy. Take the preventative measures — if you’re sick, stay home; cover your cough; wash your hands; and stay tuned. We will be communicating everything you need to know.

During those short windows of warm weather, the tarpon have come out to play as well. So far, I have caught five this season, and all of them have been caught due to an irregularly hot day during this time of the year. However, in the next week or two, we'll be fishing for them just about every day as they start their migration through the Keys. So get ready to hear stories and see pictures of people taking an Islamorada sleigh ride with a jumbo poon!

As for the Atlantic side of Islamorada, the sailfish are still being caught here and there.

It's very typical to still be seeing a lot of fish around pushing up schools of ballyhoo, but they tend to be extremely finicky. The guys catching them are taking a much more stealthy approach than they would in December.

The fishing on the shallow patch reefs has been truly outstanding. The cold weather brought some incredible catches of hogfish, mutton snappers, yellowtail snappers, porgies, mangrove snappers, groupers and mackerel. On one half-day, we caught five nice muttons from 6 to 10 pounds in only 12 feet of water. It shows that patch reef fishing is a conditional thing that really heats up as the water temps drop. So if you're looking to catch a ton of fish, run less than 20 minutes from the Bass Pro Shops marina and enjoy some tasty eating fish — this is the trip for you. Also, it's a kidfriendly trip as seas are typically not very rough and action is usually constant.

FISH ON! Local guides teach kids to cast

T

he Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association will hold the second annual Kids Fishing Expo on Sunday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Founders Park Beach Pavilion.

During this free event, kids 18 and under can participate in a day filled with nonstop fishing-related activities. Local captains will teach young anglers how to flycast, spincast, tie flies, throw a cast net and properly dehook fish.

Kids can compete for awards in age-division spin and fly casting competitions. All boys and girls are welcome to come and learn from the pros, experience the thrill of learning the techniques involved in shallow water fishing and gain insight on how to be a good environmental steward.

“Please come out for this fun, free event,” said organizer Captain Xavier Figueredo. “It’s a great day for the kids — and the guides too. Kids love to learn, and when you include fishing-related activities, it’s a win for everyone. There’s nothing better than to see a kid earn to get a feel for fly casting or throwing a cast net.”

Free hotdogs, hamburgers and drinks will be available, donated by Centennial Bank for all participants. Kids under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Early registrants will receive free prizes, including T-shirts and rod and reel combos. Competition winners in the casting contests will receive awards.

The expo is made possible by sponsorships from the Ocean Reef Conservation Association, Centennial Bank, Captain Fred’s Backcountry Charters, Islamarina, Florida Bay Forever and Fish Florida.

H

e’s collecting cycles for the greater good. In his pickup truck, Coral Shores senior Steelman Nicoletti recently made his second drive up the stretch and on to Fort Lauderdale to deliver 15 bikes.

With his most recent shipment, Nicoletti has gathered and sent roughly 30 bikes as part of a collection effort to support the Fort Lauderdale/Cypress Creek Rotary Club’s Bicycles for Humanity service project. Bikes gathered through the club are sent over to thirdworld countries to help break the cycle of poverty.

Nicoletti said he started gathering bikes from the Upper Keys a month ago, and he plans to keep the effort going with help from all islands. Nicoletti said he takes great pride helping people, from close friends to supporting special causes for the greater good.

“It’s what I want to do, and it gives me such great enjoyment,” he said.

“The sheer number of bikes I’ve been able to get in my truck has been outstanding so far.”

When there are enough cycles to fill the truck, Nicoletti ventures to Allied Roofing in Fort Lauderdale for dropoff, where he’s met by Jeff Kostick, Fort Lauderdale Cypress Rotary Club past president.

"What Steelman is doing is remarkable,” he said. “His desire to help people in another country that he will never meet is wonderful."

And bikes gathered haven’t only gone to the mainland. Nicoletti said several cycles in peak condition were donated to the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter in Tavernier. Ben Kemmer, executive director of the shelter, said the four bikes Steelman donated are being put to use.

“The kids have been out during their lunch breaks riding the bikes around the lots. They love them,” he said.

Nicoletti said his next delivery to the mainland will happen when there’s a truck full of bikes, and that’s usually 15 to 20. With immense support from the Upper Keys, Nicoletti said he wants to get communities to the south involved as well.

“I just want to get as many bikes as I can. It’s just awesome to be helping them out,” he said.

“The (Fort Lauderdale/Cypress Creek Rotary) Steelman Nicoletti club sends over a ton of bikes, and that helps expand a (third-world) village’s economy if people are too far away to walk or don’t have any transportation resources to get the water and food they need.”

Upon graduation, Nicoletti plans to attend Florida State University, where he plans to study molecular biology. He said he wants to become a geneticist with a goal to provide gene therapy through a new rapid cell injection device.

“I’d like to open a clinic where I can offer this for a low price, using financing options,” he said. “I love the world around me. I think everyone should praise the fact that we live in a beautiful universe.

It’s chaotic, but I hate to see people suffer because they can’t function correctly because of some disease.”

Zachary Woltanski, 14, and Gabby Gutierrez, 11, are the only students from Monroe County moving on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee regional in Miami on Tuesday, March 10. Both students attend Treasure Village Montessori Charter School and will compete in the middle and elementary school regional rounds of the competition, respectively. Winners of that spelling bee, which includes students from all over Florida, will travel to Washington, D.C. for the National Spelling Bee in May. Keys Weekly sat down with both champs before the contest to see how they feel.

Were you surprised when you won the school’s spelling bee and the chance to compete in Miami?

Z - This is my first time competing in the school spelling bee. We had a spell-off where it was me and another student, and I ended up getting the last word correct, so I ended up winning.

I was a little bit excited. At the same time, I felt kinda bad. I had wanted to have a tie with all my friends, but apparently they don’t allow that — multiple people to go to district. But my friends were happy for me.

G - They didn’t give me a championship word, and I was just sitting there and they said I won. It was harder this year than last because we had to study the Miami words too. We had a three-way tie.

Why do you think you won the school spelling bee?

Z - I went slowly and had studied a lot and for that reason, I was not as nervous when I went up on stage than most of the other competitors.

G - I think I won because I was studying really hard, because I prepared myself and because I won last year and had the experience.

How long have you been studying?

Z - I’ve been studying every day, usually 3 hours. It’s a lot of words. For the school spelling bee, I only studied maybe 4 weeks. For this one, I’ve been studying ever since I won the last spelling bee, so it’ll probably be like 3 weeks.

G - I have been studying for like a month now, almost a month.

How long have you been preparing?

Z - I’ve been studying for the spelling bee a lot. There’s a spelling bee app I use, and I basically read the words and repeat them and try to memorize them that way.

G - I have a journal and I search up the words on the spelling bee app.

I write down the word and the definition to memorize the definition and spelling. My mom helps me study, and I say the word, and she tells me if it’s right or wrong. My mom sits with me for hours and hours studying the spelling bee.

he Canes boys varsity baseball team split a twogame homestand recently.

It was lights out (literally) during the game between Hialeah Educational Academy and Coral Shores on Feb. 25 at Founders Park. The game’s momentum came to a halt when field lights turned off during the 4th inning at 7:58 p.m. with Canes runner Dillon Walters on base, breaking up the game for 20 minutes. Coaches and players scrambled to keep their head in the game and stay loose during a brisk windy night. Despite some decent at-bats and runners on base, Coral Shores could not score in a 6-0 defeat. The Canes returned home March 3 where a late-inning offensive burst propelled the team to victory, 6-4, over Somerset Silver Palms. — Weekly staff report AUSTIN ARONSSON/Keys Weekly 1.
