LEXY BRITO Lexy Brito, a three-sport star at Coral Shores, is this week’s choice for the Upper Keys Weekly Female Athlete of the Week. Brito led the girl’s basketball team toward a high seed in the District 16-AAAA, hosted

by Coral Shores on Feb. 3. For the season, Brito is averaging 10.6 points per game, with 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists from her shooting-guard role.

She had a season high of 25 points in a recent huge win over Key West.

“Lexy is the true definition of a team captain,” said head coach Pat Meyers. “She has put up some excellent numbers despite playing much of the season with a fracture of her non-shooting (left) hand. Lexy is one of the most unselfish players that I’ve ever coached. She has the ability to average 25 points a game, but she makes us a much better team by distributing the ball and involving all of her teammates. She is the true definition of what a team captain should be.”

Brito will graduate with a remarkable 16 varsity athletic letters, which ties a Coral Shores record with 1986 grad Kerry Cooley. She is the reigning Co-Girls Basketball Player of the Year, along with teammate Lucia Rodriguez.

Brito has decided on Florida Southwestern University as her next academic and basketball home. She has received a great deal of basketball interest from a number of colleges, but made her determination of Florida Southwestern after a visit this past week.

Brito personifies the term community service. Her most recent involvements include participating in the UKF-Hurricane Michael Relief Mission, the UKF-Hurricane Irma Relief Mission, the ICC-Boat Show, the UKF Plantation Key Nursing Home visitation program, the Upper Keys Rotary-Nautical Flea Market and AYSO Soccer, where she has served in both coaching and officiating capacities.

Castillo averaged 16.5 points per game and shot an impressive 41 percent from George vonHilsheimer, M.D. Dee Dee Vazquez, PA-C three-point land — connecting on nine threes — in the Canes’ 61-55 win against MAST Academy and their tough 65-50 loss to state-ranked Palmer Trinity.

Castillo has a 4.0 unweighted grade point average with a 4.536 weighted GPA. His 1520 SAT score included a perfect 800 on the math portion. In September, he became the first student in Coral Shores history to win the prestigious distinction of College Board Scholar for National Hispanic Students. He is currently on the “deferred entry” list for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His secondary options are Duke University and Georgia Tech.

Castillo’s community service efforts with the Upper Keys Foundation and Special Olympics are also exemplary. His UKF involvements include: the Hurricane Michael Relief Mission; Christmas caroling at the Plantation Key Nursing Facility; multiple other gift-giving trips to PKNF, the Upper Keys Rotary Giant Nautical Flea Market and the Key Largo Bridge Run. familiar contest is shaping up for the Keys’ top prosecutor’s job between incumbent State Attorney Dennis Ward and a familiar challenger: Mark Kohl.

Like two seasoned prizefighters, the two Republicans will return to the political ring this campaign season.

Ward and Kohl will face each other in the Republican primary, and the victor in that contest will face the Democrat Donald Barrett, a Key West attorney, in the general election. All three candidates have worked in the state attorney’s office.

The campaign preceding the Republican primary likely will emerge as the true battleground in this race, as Ward and Kohl have traded jabs, barbs and outright insults for more than a decade.

Kohl was state attorney in 2008, when Ward defeated him. Both ran again In 2012, with Ward seeking re-election and Kohl wanting his old job back.

Catherine Vogel defeated both men, and then hired Kohl, her professional ally, to run the office as executive director.

Four years later, in 2016, Ward ran again and defeated Vogel.

Kohl has said that concerns about Ward’s management of the state attorney’s office prompted him to enter the race. As an example, Kohl points to the forced resignation of former prosecutor Colleen Dunne, who faces a year’s suspension of her law license for failing to provide evidence to a defense attorney representing a man being tried for attempted murder.

Although Barrett was Dunne’s supervisor at the time, Ward was the top dog.

“You lead from the top,” Kohl has said repeatedly.

All three candidates — Ward, Kohl and Barrett — have filed the proper campaign paperwork with Florida’s Department of State, Division of Elections. State Attorney is one position that is handled by the state’s election office, not the county’s, said Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin.

Art Guild members’ work displayed at Garden Walk Works of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles members will be on display at the Garden Walk Art Show at the Francis Tracy Garden Center on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is a traditional part of the Garden Club event. Sanctuary advisory council to meet in Marathon Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary will hold an advisory council meeting at Isla Bella Beach Resort in Marathon, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The meeting is open to the public.

With the Restoration Blueprint public comment period closed, the primary focus will be identifying priority issues for making recommendations to NOAA for creation of a draft rule. Advisory council members will also receive an update on the sanctuary’s consultation with governmental agencies and a presentation on the Monroe County Tourist Development Council’s sustainability campaign. General public comment will be taken at 4 p.m.

Speaker to discuss town’s ruin by volcano Join veteran Immerse Yourself presenter and author John Christopher Fine as he details the demise of St. Pierre on the Caribbean island of Martinique, after the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee. On Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., at the History of Diving Museum, MM83 in Islamorada. Fine will share his experiences diving on the shipwrecks that lay scattered within the waters of St. Pierre. A strange-looking and now-uncommon fish The sixth installment of the 29th annual lecture series, “The Delicate Balance of Nature,” will discuss the sawfish. Tonya Wiley, president of Havenworth Coastal Conservation, will present the session “Endangered Sawfish of the Florida Keys,” on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The presentation will be held at the Visitor Center and Aquarium building inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, located at MM 102.5, oceanside. There is no cost to enter the park for the lecture series. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. Seating is limited. onnecting the Florida Keys to the mainland was not just the railroad dreams of Henry Flagler. Others were voicing their desire to see some kind of conduit linking the two, too. Politician George W. Allen gave a speech advocating the necessity of a roadway to bridge mainland Florida and Key Largo that preceded Flagler’s plan and dated back to 1895. Allen would not be the last to express interest in road projects on the islands.

Monroe County residents, especially farmers interested in better roads on which to transport their crops to packing houses established near the train’s right-of-way, began appealing to the county in 1908. The Miami Motor Club lent its voice to the argument in 1919 when its representatives lobbied for the construction of a road to the Keys that could provide their winter tourists with a “suburban” fishing ground.

In 1922, Monroe County officials allocated $300,000 to build a road from North Key Largo’s exclusive Anglers Club to the Key Largo Depot, once located near MM 105.5. The funds were not exclusively for work on Key Largo. A road that paralleled the railway south to Upper Matecumbe Key was also undertaken, as were road projects on the Lower Keys and on Key West.

Real progress began in 1926, when Monroe County issued a $2.5 million bond for road projects, including the construction of a wooden bridge connecting Little Card Point (on the mainland side) to the existing road on North Key Largo. This would become the Card Sound Bridge. Additionally, on the Dade side of the county line, commissioners agreed to finance 11 miles of road that would link Florida City to Little Card Point.

When the road projects were complete, the result was State Road 4A. It was now possible to drive from the mainland to Key West — for the most part. J. Otto Kirchheiner, chairman of the Monroe County Commission, is credited as being the first person to traverse State Road 4A via automobile, leaving Key West for the mainland on July 18, 1927. State Road 4A, also known by its more familiar name, the Overseas Highway, officially opened to public traffic on January 25, 1928.

The road, however, was incomplete and came to a temporary end at Lower Matecumbe Key. From there, for those looking to continue to the Lower Keys and Key West, it was necessary to board an automobile ferry. To do the job, three automobile ferries were purchased from Gibb’s Shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida for a total cost of $850,000. Each was capable of transporting up to 20 cars at a time and departed the Lower Matecumbe terminal daily at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Vehicles less than 14 feet long were charged $3.50, while those longer than 16 feet cost $6.50. Ticket prices included the driver, but passengers were assessed an additional fee of $1 each. The trip took about four hours, provided the weather and tides cooperated, and ended at No Name Key, where the road picked back up and led the rest of the way to Key West.

Road projects would not cease with the opening of State Road 4A. The building of roads in the Marathon area, as well as two additional ferry terminals, were completed in 1931.

Terminals were constructed on Grassy Key and on the Gulf side of Hog Key, as well as a road connecting them, shortening the highway gap from one 40-mile trip to two shorter ferry rides spanning a total of 28 miles. While those driving from Miami to Key West now spent less time riding on an automobile ferry, they spent just as long sitting in lines awaiting the arrival of the next ferry.

BILLS ON THE HILL HALFWAY POINT REACHED, CHAMBERS’ BUDGETS FAR APART

A

t the state capital, members in the House and Senate have until March 10 to work out some big budget differences, if they plan to end the legislative session on time.

In late January, the chambers released budget proposals that were $1.4 billion apart.

Now, the House and Senate await conferencing to hash out differences, and they must do so by March 10 in order to end their 60-day session on time. Legislators in the House and Senate are expected to convene later this month to sift through budget differences.

The legislature is required to approve a single budget to send to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

With a new fiscal year beginning July 1, the House unveiled a $91.3 billion spending plan that includes more than DeSantis’ $625 million request for Everglades restoration and water quality projects. Just over $643 million is allocated within the Senate’s $92.8 billion spending plan to continue significant investments in Everglades restoration and water resource protection.

The Senate spending plan includes $125 million for Florida Forever, which protects many of Florida’s conservation lands.

The House budget shows $20 million for the land conservation program.

The Senate budget also shows $500 million in a new teacher salary increase allocation and $325 million in increased funding through the base student allocation, which districts can invest in teachers and school district personnel.

The Senate has placed $50 million in its budget for the state’s tourism marketing branch, Visit Florida. The House has no funding for the agency.

As for affordable housing, the Senate is looking to fund programs at $387 million. The House, however, is putting $147 million aside.

Several appropriation requests have been made on Keys-related projects.

COLLEGE OF THE FLORIDA KEYS An appropriation request of $2 million has been made for the College of the Florida Keys to complete its recovery from Hurricane Irma. Funds would provide student services and upgrades to key facilities for the successful completion of two- and four-year degree programs. The college is one of the state’s smallest serving one of the state’s most challenging geographic areas.

HARRY S. TRUMAN LITTLE WHITE HOUSE A total of $250,000 has been requested to digitize and archive the collection of state-owned historic documents and artifacts related to the Little White House’s presidential history.

Documents were donated to the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation so items are better preserved and more available for viewing. The mission of the foundation is to share the history of the American presidency and preserve and protect the Truman Little House. With the project, students and residents around the state and world can search and view the collection without paying a physical visit to the museum in Key West.

The request was placed in the House budget, but it’s not currently in the Senate budget.

of its city hall building, including EOC and police, following damage from Hurricane Irma. The new structure will be elevated above base flood elevation by 24 to 26 inches and fortified against V zone wave action.

The project also includes IT equipment for connectivity to Monroe County and alternative power sources such as mobile generator and battery-backup power system with solar input.

The request is within the House budget.

WAYPOINT FOUNDATION With plans to provide dental care to kids up and down the Keys, a $125,000 appropriation request is in for a mobile dental unit. With funding, a school-based dental unit program would be created to address the critical need for oral health care for the underserved youth in the Keys. The program will require a one-time expenditure for the purchase of a used mobile dental unit, which is a self-contained drivable unit similar to an RV with two separate rooms to perform dental care. The unit will be selfsustaining through Medicaid reimbursement opportunities.

The request was placed in the House budget.

MARC HOUSE An appropriation request is in to support the MARC House, which offers support to individuals with disabilities in order to obtain and remain in competitive employment and enhance a person’s employment options and interpersonal skills. Other services provide medical and therapeutic supervision and help to increase a client’s ability to develop friendships with non-disabled persons.

HB 587 — Florida Keys Area of Critical Concern An amendment to the bill is now proposing a mandatory hurricane evacuation clearance time for permanent residents within the Keys from 24 hours to 30 hours. Per a bill analysis, increasing mandatory evacuation times could increase local governments’ flexibility to issue development permits, and that in turn would result in less takings litigation and lower liability costs. Legislation was originally put forth to split takings cases 50-50 between the state and local municipalities once building permits are gone and property owners sue.

But language holding the state liable for half the takings costs was struck out during a Jan. 29 Civil Justice Subcommittee meeting.

The mandatory evacuation change came from committee staff, not Raschein’s office.

HB 1041 — Florida Keys Mosquito Control District Legislation currently sits in the State Affairs Committee to revise requirements for the district’s board of commissioners to borrow money. Current legislation sets a $1 million limit on the district’s borrowing authority over a 5-year period. With passage of HB 1041, restrictions would be lifted to bring the borrowing authority of the board of commissioners in line with other agencies. And it would allow the district to purchase helicopters for its mosquito control operation.

HB 1165 — Beverage Law Raschein is sponsoring a bill that would allow a craft brewery to hold multiple vendor’s licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages. There are a few distilleries in the local community, but they’re limited in where they can conduct tastings, where they can distribute or store products and how much they can sell. Legislation seeks to level the playing field between wineries and distilleries. “The industry is new to the scene and they’re very limited in what they can do to expand their business and their business model,” she said.

Monroe county will seek upgraded CRS class designation, saving over $1 million annually

W

hen it comes to flood insurance, many of us want to just stick our heads in the sand.

Turns out, it can be confusing, frustrating and expensive to insure a house on an island. Luckily, the county is taking steps to mitigate some of that cost and frustration.

The Community Rating System (CRS) recognizes communities that manage their floodplain risk which, in turn, earns the entire community a flood insurance discount off their premium. The percentage discount depends on what class determination the community is given.

Since 2015, the county has moved from a Class 6 to a Class 5, with a 25 percent savings to insurance holders, by correcting more than 300 findings in the original audit

by FEMA. Monroe County is classified in “Good Standing” with the agency that controls the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and implementing programs that raise awareness of impending flood issues, as well as regulations that protect property and lives. Overall, the current designation has cumulatively saved flood insurance policyholders more than $19 million in the past five years.

At the January BOCC meeting, Monroe County’s Community Rating System (CRS) consultant Lori Lehr took it a step further, presenting a draft Repetitive Loss Area Analysis (RLAA) for unincorporated Monroe County to the BOCC. The RLAA plan looks at repetitive and severe repetitive loss properties, including the claims from the last five major storms. There are 391 structures on 370 parcels with seven listed as severe repetitive loss properties. Unincorporated Monroe has 60 repetitive loss areas that include 9,543 properties (with sites

Adoption of a final RLAA is the final step for the county to be eligible to move from CRS Class 5 to Class 4. If successful, the new designation will save flood insurance policyholders additional hundreds of dollars yearly. Total county savings annually would go from $5,317,202 to $6,376,373.

Lehr reviewed the Class 4 prerequisites: “A community must demonstrate that it has programs that minimize flood losses, minimize increases in future flooding, protect natural floodplain functions, and protect people from the dangers of flooding.” Recent sea level rise modeling of drainage infrastructure and drainage maintenance plan along with the recently implemented RLAA could move the county to the new designation.

“We would be the only Class 4 in a coastal community and we would be in the presence of only two other Class 4 designated counties in Florida,” said County Administrator Roman Gastesi. “This is a big deal.”

Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley added a clarification for the benefit of homeowners. She said, “Just because your residence is in a repetitive loss area does not mean that your structure is at risk. It just means there are properties in that area that are at risk.”

Hurley said that if property owners have an elevation certificate or other information about their property, they could contact

Lehr as the county adopts the RLAA. That information will then be put on file, so if the owner wants to sell the property in the future, the buyer can be guaranteed if the site is at risk or not based on the elevation certificate.

Hurley and Mayor Heather Carruthers emphasized this critical point. Hurley said, “So, it takes more than this report to create the full picture per property.”

Mayor pro tem Michelle Coldiron lauded staff for making sure the community gets the best rating possible for homeowners. Lehr agreed, saying, “The CRS program makes us aware and makes the public aware. We’re more resilient because of our participation in the program, and we’re making sure the public gets the benefit of the resiliency we’re promoting and the mitigation work we’re doing.”

Gastesi summed it up: “We’ve spent a running total of just under $500,000 in the last four years for this program, and you saw we’ll have saved $25 million.” He added, “That’s a nice return on investment.”

The presentation, plan, risk areas and additional information can be found at www.monroecountyfl.gov/crs. The county is seeking public input on the draft plan and will be presenting the final plan for adoption at the Feb. 19, 2020 BOCC meeting.

With the completion of the latest CRS resilience tasks, the county will submit the documentation to go through the rigorous review process this summer, with a target goal to be rated a Class 4 by Oct. 1, 2020.

Childress is an Air Force brat who landed in Marathon over 13 years ago with her husband, Todd Childress. She is the mother of two children and numerous critters. When Childress isn’t chasing around her two- and four-legged kids, she can be found curled up with a good book or on her yoga mat.

“I welcome the challenge of improving our already excellent customer service,” said Childress. “My goal is to help our advertisers.”

Wojciechowski has recently relocated from southern New Jersey, bringing her sales and service experience to the Florida Keys to provide excellent solutions to Weekly advertisers.

“I’m excited to have relocated to start a new life and blessed to be a part of a team as amazing as the Keys Weekly staff. I am eager to get involved with the community and provide help where I can!” said Wojciechowski about her relocation.

Wojciechowski was born and raised in southern New Jersey and is a wife of an Army vet and mother to a toddler.

She brings experience in various areas, from mortgage and insurance underwriting to multi-level marketing. She’s passionate about helping others, specifically raising young women into strong confident women.

2. Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery performed an animal liberation ceremony for “Drifter,” a loggerhead sea turtle that was released at the Islander Resort in Islamorada.

3. To open their visit, the monks create an intricate mandala pattern out of colored sands at the Islander Resort in Islamorada over a few hours.

The fringed hat that resembles a horse's mane or a Roman helmet, is worn in procession by monks of all 3 of the younger (or, Sarma) denominations. It is often referred to as the Vinaya hat Then, they purposefully destroy the mandala and throw the sand into the sea. The practice highlights the impermanence of everything in life and teaches not to become attached to things.

4. The kids drumming challenge joins forces with several other drumming groups throughout the Keys to play at the Keys Jewish Community Center.

5. The Tibetan monks bring a snow lion with them to dance to music played by the monks. To the audience’s delight, the lion was rather playful, jumping and rolling on the floor.

n late January, Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in South India toured the Keys as part of their annual Sacred Arts Tour, spreading peace and blessings.

“So many beautiful things happen when they’re here,” said organizer Denise Downing of Keys to Peace in Islamorada.

“I call it ‘magic,’ but they tell me it’s more like ‘karma.’ There are no coincidences here. They bring a very special energy to the Keys and people feel it.”

Sighing calmly, Downing added, “They make my heart swell.”

The monks will travel throughout the U.S. as part of a 15-month tour to share their culture and philosophy and to raise money. Their outreach supports the 2,300 monks who reside at the monastery and the Free Tibet movement.

The monks graciously discuss compassion and the wisdom of emptiness, traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings, in addition to performing many ceremonies for luck. They construct and destroy an intricate sand mandala to emphasize the impermanence of life and the merit of not becoming attached to things. People, places and pets are blessed to remove sicknesses or obstacles and to create good energy towards goals. Political and cultural challenges of living in exile are discussed without anger.

“The monks bring people together, all kinds of people from all over,” said Downing, looking around at the mixed congregation at Keys Jewish Community Center (KJCC). “They’re enlightened, I tell ya.” KJCC hosted an interfaith and multicultural musical evening which included drum circles, classical piano and traditional deep chanting.

Minyak Rinpoche joined the monastery at 5 years old.

He was personally recognized by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and has lived at the monastery since. Minyak explained that their mission is to promote personal discipline and world peace. “When we control our emotions, we learn to move beyond the trappings of this life,” he said.

As part of the Upper Keys Tour, the monks also performed an animal liberation ceremony before releasing a rehabilitated sea turtle in conjunction with the Turtle Hospital and Islander Resort.

A grateful onlooker told Minyak, “Thank you for sharing your culture and love and for the space you hold in the world for peace.” The monk nodded with a smile and a bow, and the onlooker added, “We really need it — us, the turtles, everyone.

Thank you.”

Texas couple celebrates life, renews wedding vows underwater TIFFANY DUONG

n March 2005, Jessica and Jaylyn Hamm married in a traditional ceremony at Jaylyn’s family church in Conroe, Texas. The Hamms were 19 and 20 and just figuring life out. Fifteen years later, they decided to renew their vows with a bit of flair — by doing it underwater at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo.

“I have always wanted to dive, and Jaylyn has been certified since he was 13,” said Jessica. In August 2018, Jessica completed her open water certification, and the pair dive every chance they can.

“My wife and I have absolutely fallen in love with the sport,” said Jaylyn, “so we’re very eco-conscious about the sea.”

They try to raise awareness any way they can. Even though they own a floor-covering store in Texas, they sell reef-safe Stream2Sea sunscreen there. Jaylyn explains the connection, saying, “I can reach the 99% of the people who aren’t aware of the problem (that sunscreens cause to coral reefs) and broaden our impact for the sea.”

It’s no wonder the playful, oceanloving couple renewed their vows at Jules’ Undersea Lodge. The underwater hotel is unique in the world as people can only get there by scuba diving. It sits in almost 30 feet of water in a protected “Emerald Lagoon” in Key Largo.

“There is nowhere else in the world you can scuba dive to your underwater hotel room, have pizza delivered, and sleep with the fishes,” says Teresa McKinna, president of Key Largo Undersea Park, home of Jules’ Undersea Lodge. “So naturally, it makes for a very memorable vow renewal.”

“It just sounded like an amazing thing to do together to celebrate the love we have for each other in a way that is unique to us,” Jessica said.

Showing her specially-redesigned ring, which added a heart, turtle and stingray around her original engagement stone, she said, “What could be better?”

Jaylyn said, “It was a once-in-alifetime experience that combined what we found to be our passion together and allowed us to renew our passion for each other at the same time.”

Because of the unique location of the lodge, the hotel “mer-chef” is also the officiant and a scuba instructor. The ceremony amazingly included the traditional wedding details of fresh flowers, wedding toasts and cake cutting, vows, and a romantic steak and lobster dinner, all completed underwater. After the celebrations, the couple stayed the night in the underwater hotel and scuba dove around the Emerald Lagoon to their heart’s content.

Recalling the intimacy and privacy of it all, Jessica says, “It felt like it really was just about the two of us.

I won’t forget it.”

Throughout the approximate two-hour show, the audience will follow the lives of three women – Judy, Violet and Doralee – who work in an office run by the lewd, lascivious and pompous CEO of Consolidated, Franklin Hart (John Rudolph). “What do you call a woman who’s lost 95% of her intelligence? Divorced!” is one of many crude comments that spill from his mouth throughout the performance.

The first of the three women, Judy Bernly, played by Christina Neel in her first production with Key Players, has never had a job in her life. When her husband leaves her, she is forced to join Consolidated despite having no office experience. Judy brings laughs as she stumbles through various office tasks and drama, doing her best to learn the ropes and not send the Xerox papers flying (again).

Violet Newstead, played by Cristina Salvesen in her third performance with Key Players, is the bossy and opinionated senior office manager of Consolidated who is continuously passed up for promotions despite her obvious qualifications.

Lastly, there’s Doralee Rhodes – Hart’s sexual interest – played by Mary-Margaret

Dale in her first production with the Key Players. Though they’re both married (Doralee, happily), Hart sexually harasses her, spreading false rumors they’re having an affair. This effectively ostracizes her from other women in the office who already judge her for her looks.

This workplace negativity brings the three women together in disdain over Hart. After bonding over a shared joint during a hysterical scene where the three women fantasize about killing him, Violet comes to believe she’s inadvertently poisoned Hart with rat poison.

After more backstabbing and deceit, the women capture Hart, tie him up, and secretly run the office, creating a well-oiled machine in Hart’s absence, until he finally makes his escape. What happens next will only be revealed by attending the show.

Salvesen describes “9 to 5” as having a little bit of everything – at points you will laugh, you may even cry, and you’ll likely want to sing along and dance. In addition to its comedic value, the musical’s relatability is a draw.

“Though it’s a show from the ’70s, everyone knows the song ‘9 to 5,’ everyone knows Dolly Parton, and everyone can relate to the theme in some way or another,” says director/producer Jonelle Kop. Salvesen agrees. “It’s interesting to see the play now with the topic of women in the workplace. You still come across some of those same issues portrayed when the movie came out 40 years ago.”

With a 20-person cast, “9 to 5 The Musical” is the largest show the Key Players have done since “Shrek The Musical” in 2016. Kop credits her exceedingly talented musical cast for the show’s success. In all, the theater group has performed more than 125 shows in its 42-year history.

The cast hopes the audience will leave with a message. Dale says, “While this show is going to be a great night out, I hope audience members leave with a message of empowerment and a sense that you can make things better and don’t have to take crap from anybody!”

The Key Players’ 9 to 5 The Musical is scheduled to open Thursday, Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m. at the Murray Nelson Government & Cultural Center.

Additional shows are scheduled for Feb. 21, 22 and 27-29 at 7:30 p.m.

CSHS BIOLOGY TEACHER WINS COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

J

acob Poelma is changing the game for students in Monroe County. Through critical mentorship, personalized teaching, and innovative technology, the biology teacher is improving how students learn. In his fourth year at Coral Shores High School, his efforts have earned him the Teacher of the Year award from Monroe County School District.

The Mississippi native recalls a letter he received his first year as a teacher. “It was after school, and I was questioning why I chose to be a teacher,” he said, “then this student gave me the letter, and it said, ‘Thank you for letting me be happy at school because I can’t be happy at home.’”

The memory still hits home, and Poelma tells the Weekly, “That became the seed in me that we’re teaching people. We’re not just teaching stats and numbers; these kids are people.”

It was then that the science teacher realized there’s more to kids than their good test scores, data produced or what they turn in. He works hard to honor this individuality, fostering a sense of community and a safe haven in his classroom for students. “They see me as an adult who’s not a parent that they can talk to. I really value that,” he said.

His focus on each students’ unique life and needs also informs how he teaches. “I focus on what a student can learn, rather than on what the teacher can teach,” he says.

“Every student deserves the chance to fall in love with school. School shouldn’t be a burden. It should be a doorway to a brighter future.”

This is Jacob Poelma’s fourth year teaching at CSHS. ‘I’ll be heartbroken this year: my freshman will be seniors this year,’ he says. ‘All the doodles on this board are from Sophie Kubida, who I taught as a freshman, and every day she comes to add a doodle. When she leaves, my art wall will be missing.’

Poelma uses a lighthearted teaching style and personal examples to engage his students. From using student’s own creations as lecture examples to pulling in what’s going on around school, he keeps students engaged with the material.

“When they see me not as a scary adult but someone trying to have fun with science, they also want to have fun with it,” he says.

“It helps the material stick.”

Poelma has even revolutionized the classroom, casting real-time language translations of his lectures to student laptops and cell phones. “I can have it in Spanish for you, and Islandic for her, while teaching in English. It makes a big difference for ELL students to learn in their language, so when their English language skills pick up, they actually understand the material.”

This innovation is just one example of Poelma’s attention to the individual needs of each of his students, and one he hopes to implement in classrooms around the county.

True to his values, Poelma mentors students both in and out of the classroom, announcing home football games, sponsoring the Gaming Club, hosting the talent show and volunteering for extracurricular activities every chance he can. He loves it, saying,

“There’s a lot of kids that when you see them and what they do, that they aren’t just doing it for volunteer hours on their sheets, you have hope.”

The Teacher of the Year is chosen from individual winners at every school in the district. Candidates are judged on instruction, data, school/community involvement, recommendation letters, as well as rigorous critique of a video of a lesson.

“The committee had a difficult time selecting from such a talented group of extraordinary teachers,” said selection committee chairperson Amber Acevedo.

“In the end, Jacob’s passion for education and ability to build student relationships set him apart.”

Poelma concludes, “I still have that letter from my first year. It’s a big reminder of why I am who I am and why I love this job.”

WAYPOINT FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING TO BRING MOBILE DENTAL CLINIC TO THE KEYS

C

larice Yentsch and Wally Smith are on a mission to create healthy smiles in the Keys. They’re fundraising to get a mobile dental clinic — essentially a bus tricked-out with dental equipment and exam chairs — to travel between schools and provide high quality, free dental care to kids throughout Monroe County.

The unlikely pair — a biological oceanographer and an entrepreneurial dentist, respectively — collaborate through Yentsch’s private, not for profit foundation, the Waypoint Foundation (TWF).

“The mission of Waypoint is to celebrate human creativity,” said Yentsch. “We focus on education, exhibitions and collaborations to address unmet needs in the Florida Keys.”

Past foundation initiatives include music therapy, an exhibit on Vietnam by a veteran, and a collection of meaningful ways to say goodbye, written by a hospice worker.

The Mobile Smile Maker initiative advocates for critical dental resources for disadvantaged students. As part of the initiative, the foundation will host a dental health exhibit at Key Largo library the entire month of February as well as a Dental Fair on Feb. 14. The crux of the initiative is the mobile clinic itself.

The total cost to purchase a used, 2-operatory-chair mobile clinic is $125,000.

“Think about a blood-donation-mobile; that’s what they are like,” suggests Smith.

Smith is no stranger to mobile dental clinics. The dentist started and ran a similar, successful mobile clinic 20 years ago in rural North Carolina to take care of disadvantaged children. When Yentsch learned about Smith’s public service health background and history with mobile community dentistry, she immediately said, “That’s very cool.

Let’s do something together.” A year later, Smith was brought on as the foundation’s official volunteer dental consultant to start up the Mobile Smile Maker initiative.

The need for such services is great, said Yentsch. “We only have 20 dentists here, and only one takes Medicaid. So, a lot of kids don’t get dental care. They aren’t being seen.”

Currently, local dental care for impoverished youths is limited to the Florida Keys Area Health Education Center Inc. (AHEC) dental sealant program. The program is limited, serving around 700 students a year and only seeing kids in the 2nd and 7th grades.

Smith articulates the problem with this system. “They can identify problems, but they can’t provide solutions,” he laments.

“They only do sealants, and then the parent has to find another dentist to do the work and that’s the hard part.”

Smith hopes to replicate his North Carolina success to serve way more kids every year with the mobile dental clinic. He adds, “The initial thrust will be to take care of the youngest kids first. If you can intercede with kids with dental problems early, you can save them from really complex problems later in life.”

AHEC will remain intimately involved.

Operationally, the foundation plans to turn over the reins to AHEC, which will coordinate appointment sign-ups at schools and enlist dental health professionals to work in the mobile clinic. Smith said, “AHEC has $200,000 grant funding now to hire and pay dentists, hygienists and assistants for 2021 and to buy supplies. They already have the human resources, so the only missing link in this collaboration is the mobile clinic.”

That’s where the foundation is stepping in to purchase a mobile clinic. Smith says, “We’re trying to raise funds, and Waypoint will purchase and provide the mobile clinic to AHEC to move from school to school. We

3 will provide the clinic, they will provide the services, and we will provide oversight and education because that’s the other critical component.”

The Waypoint Foundation is targeting the 2021-22 school year for the mobile clinic launch. A 1:12 scale model of the mobile dental clinic will be displayed and featured at the Feb. 14 dental fair and intermittently at Key Largo Library. KC Spaulding, of the charter boat Caribsea, hoisted the sailfish hardware as winner of the Florida Keys Gold Fishing Championship on Jan. 30.

Dec. 5-8, 2019. The team would release another three sails during the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament, held Jan. 24-26, followed by one release to conclude the trifecta at the Islamorada Fishing Clubs Captain’s Cup Tournament, Jan 29-30.

The combined total of 23 releases would crown the Caribsea grand champions with Caribee Boat Sales and Yamaha Outboards sponsored gold cups, along with trophies for the captain and mate. The team also took home a check for $13,000.

Second place went to Captain JC Cleare aboard the Remix. Anglers John and Ben Dorton, of Weston, along with Nick Carullo, George Corzo and Sarah Melia of Miami, and Madison Wright and Doug Meintkiewicz of Islamorada, would release a total of 19 fish. The team released 12 fish in the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, five in the Cheeca Presidential and two in the Islamorada Fishing Club Tournament. As a result, they took home second-place trophies and a check for $7,200.

My long-time friend Capt. Charlie Tindal of Stay Fly Inshore Fishing got the opportunity to fish two very good female anglers in the Swamp Guides Ball recently. He caught 60 redfish and seven snook in the tournament, but sadly he couldn’t find the elusive bonefish. Those are huge numbers to put up for a tournament that had over 50 boats with the best fishermen in all of the Florida Keys. Tindal is a young captain born and raised in Islamorada like myself, and has the knowledge that stems from his father who was an incredible Keys fishing legend. He’s an old-school fisherman, with the hunger and competitive edge to compete with any fisherman in the Keys whether in the backcountry or offshore. Tindal is one of the few guys who puts his clients on tarpon, bonefish, or permit one day, then can run far offshore and catch a big swordfish the next. coutmaster Ari Poholek knows that it’s important for younger generations to understand that they can be the solution to the plastic pollution problem. The scouts recently participated in two coastal cleanups. An area state parks cleanup of Lignumvitae Key resulted in over 1 ton of trash removed. While cleaning up Indian Key, the scouts rescued a cormorant with severe wing and leg injuries that prevented it from flying or swimming. They took the bird to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center where it was eventually euthanized due to its severe injuries.

Executive Director Jordan Budnik could not confirm whether the cormorant's condition was directly related to the debris on Indian Key, but she did note that native wildlife in the Keys fights an “uphill battle against debris” in the water and along the shorelines. “Whether we see animals entangled in fishing line and hooks, or ingesting litter, pollution is a tragedy that plays itself out over and over again in our ecosystems,” she said. Budnik encouraged wide participation in coastal cleanups to protect wildlife from “inhumane fates” and to preserve the environment for the future.
