he ideas are trickling in: a sensory play park for children, a passive park with a man-made beach and restored lighthouses, an area for food truck concessions and art vendors. Residents, and visitors for that matter, are beginning to submit ideas for the redevelopment of the former Quay property, now a city park.

The City of Marathon is conducting public workshops for input on what should be done with the property. The first was Feb. 12 at the beach. More are planned: Thursday, Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rotary Park.

Friday, Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marathon Community Park.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18 there will be a special workshop where the public can add comments and review the ideas already presented. It will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall. City staff provide paper, pens and coloring markers to let participants draw out their ideas.

“At this stage, we’re just collecting ideas,” said Brian Shea, a senior planner with the city. “At the last meeting I will be presenting what we have so far, and members of the city’s planning commission will lead the meeting.”

The land was purchased in 2018 for $2.1 million. At the time, city officials said it was too good an opportunity to pass up — the ability to welcome and define Marathon for southbound visitors as they approach the city for the first time.

The property has stood idle since 2005 when Hurricane Wilma wiped out a popular restaurant and retail complex. It passed into the estate of Gus Boulis, a South Florida businessman who was murdered in Fort Lauderdale in 2001. The Quay extends from where the city-owned boat ramp is at MM 53.5 bayside north to where the land protrudes into the water.

1946-2020

Claire (Carraway) Washington was born Jan. 4, 1946, in Fort Myers, FL, and passed away on Tuesday Jan. 28, 2020, while a resident of Eustis, Florida.

Many of her formative years were spent in Hialeah, Florida, where she graduated high school.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Claire – and her family – spent a significant part of their lives in Marathon, where – for more than 40 years – Claire and her husband Gary owned and operated Coyne’s Laundry.

During this time Claire kept most of Marathon clean while establishing long-term friendships with countless customers, local residents and businesses. In addition to working and caring for her family, Claire had a natural affinity for animals – especially horses – and went to great lengths to nurture the ones in her care. Smiles and laughter were an integral part of who she was, and her sense of humor will be sorely missed.

Claire is survived by her devoted family: husband of 50 years, Gary; daughters Tracey Jones (Gary), Sorrento, Florida; Jennifer Riemer (Jeffrey), St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren Carrie Hendrick, Kristopher Hendrick and great-grandson Ethan Hendrick; siblings James Carraway (Linda); Winston Carraway Jr. and former wife, Frances; and Lucille Loraine Thomas.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Nature Center holds grand opening

LEARNING TO FLY L ast month, the Boy Scout Pack 901 visited with Fred Fink of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) at Marathon airport. Fink and other volunteers helped the Boy Scouts earn their Aviation merit badges. Scouts attended a lecture on aviation, completed a written assignment, participated

in computerized flight simulation, and flew with Fink and his colleagues in small airplanes for a bird's eye view of Marathon.

The Scouts even got to try their hands at flying the airplanes.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges will host a grand opening of its new Nature Center. The doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the ribbon cutting is at 10 a.m. The festivities, with wildlife-oriented games and activities, last until 2 p.m. There will be live music, a DJ, fishing and archery challenges, nature sketching and photography presentations and booths hosted by various agencies.

BILLS ON THE HILL HALFWAY POINT REACHED, CHAMBERS’ BUDGETS FAR APART

A

t the state capital, members in the House and Senate have until March 10 to work out some big budget differences, if they plan to end the legislative session on time.

In late January, the chambers released budget proposals that were $1.4 billion apart.

Now, the House and Senate await conferencing to hash out differences, and they must do so by March 10 in order to end their 60-day session on time. Legislators in the House and Senate are expected to convene later this month to sift through budget differences.

The legislature is required to approve a single budget to send to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

With a new fiscal year beginning July 1, the House unveiled a $91.3 billion spending plan that includes more than DeSantis’ $625 million request for Everglades restoration and water quality projects. Just over $643 million is allocated within the Senate’s $92.8 billion spending plan to continue significant investments in Everglades restoration and water resource protection.

The Senate spending plan includes $125 million for Florida Forever, which protects many of Florida’s conservation lands.

The House budget shows $20 million for the land conservation program.

The Senate budget also shows $500 million in a new teacher salary increase allocation and $325 million in increased funding through the base student allocation, which districts can invest in teachers and school district personnel.

The Senate has placed $50 million in its budget for the state’s tourism marketing branch, Visit Florida. The House has no funding for the agency.

As for affordable housing, the Senate is looking to fund programs at $387 million. The House, however, is putting $147 million aside.

Several appropriation requests have been made on Keys-related projects.

COLLEGE OF THE FLORIDA KEYS An appropriation request of $2 million has been made for the College of the Florida Keys to complete its recovery from Hurricane Irma. Funds would provide student services and upgrades to key facilities for the successful completion of two- and four-year degree programs. The college is one of the state’s smallest serving one of the state’s most challenging geographic areas.

HARRY S. TRUMAN LITTLE WHITE HOUSE A total of $250,000 has been requested to digitize and archive the collection of state-owned historic documents and artifacts related to the Little White House’s presidential history.

Documents were donated to the Key West Harry S. Truman Foundation so items are better preserved and more available for viewing. The mission of the foundation is to share the history of the American presidency and preserve and protect the Truman Little House. With the project, students and residents around the state and world can search and view the collection without paying a physical visit to the museum in Key West.

The request was placed in the House budget, but it’s not currently in the Senate budget.

of its city hall building, including EOC and police, following damage from Hurricane Irma. The new structure will be elevated above base flood elevation by 24 to 26 inches and fortified against V zone wave action.

The project also includes IT equipment for connectivity to Monroe County and alternative power sources such as mobile generator and battery-backup power system with solar input.

The request is within the House budget.

WAYPOINT FOUNDATION With plans to provide dental care to kids up and down the Keys, a $125,000 appropriation request is in for a mobile dental unit. With funding, a school-based dental unit program would be created to address the critical need for oral health care for the underserved youth in the Keys. The program will require a one-time expenditure for the purchase of a used mobile dental unit, which is a self-contained drivable unit similar to an RV with two separate rooms to perform dental care. The unit will be selfsustaining through Medicaid reimbursement opportunities.

MARC HOUSE An appropriation request is in to support the MARC House, which offers support to individuals with disabilities in order to obtain and remain in competitive employment and enhance a person’s employment options and interpersonal skills. Other services provide medical and therapeutic supervision and help to increase a client’s ability to develop friendships with non-disabled persons.

HB 587 — Florida Keys Area of Critical Concern An amendment to the bill is now proposing a mandatory hurricane evacuation clearance time for permanent residents within the Keys from 24 hours to 30 hours. Per a bill analysis, increasing mandatory evacuation times could increase local governments’ flexibility to issue development permits, and that in turn would result in less takings litigation and lower liability costs. Legislation was originally put forth to split takings cases 50-50 between the state and local municipalities once building permits are gone and property owners sue.

But language holding the state liable for half the takings costs was struck out during a Jan. 29 Civil Justice Subcommittee meeting.

The mandatory evacuation change came from committee staff, not Raschein’s office.

HB 1041 — Florida Keys Mosquito Control District Legislation currently sits in the State Affairs Committee to revise requirements for the district’s board of commissioners to borrow money. Current legislation sets a $1 million limit on the district’s borrowing authority over a 5-year period. With passage of HB 1041, restrictions would be lifted to bring the borrowing authority of the board of commissioners in line with other agencies. And it would allow the district to purchase helicopters for its mosquito control operation.

HB 1165 — Beverage Law Raschein is sponsoring a bill that would allow a craft brewery to hold multiple vendor’s licenses for the sale of alcoholic beverages. There are a few distilleries in the local community, but they’re limited in where they can conduct tastings, where they can distribute or store products and how much they can sell. Legislation seeks to level the playing field between wineries and distilleries. “The industry is new to the scene and they’re very limited in what they can do to expand their business and their business model,” she said.

lint Barras may be a political newcomer, but he’s been paying attention and will formally roll out his campaign, website and political platform next week.

Barras is the first Democrat to enter the District 120 state representative race to replace Republican Florida Keys State Rep. Holly Raschein, whose time in Tallahassee will end due to term limits following the current legislative session.

Raschein’s seat is one of nine occupied by Republicans who cannot or will not seek reelection, making those seats vulnerable to Democrats, who are hoping to claim a majority in the Florida House of Representatives.

Barras is vice president of business development for Two Oceans Digital, a Key West-based digital marketing company that specializes in web design, website creation and online marketing strategies. The company handles the digital marketing efforts for the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

Barras told Keys Weekly on Feb. 11 that he wasn’t officially ready for a candidate profile or interview and wanted to wait until his website and platform are finalized in the coming week.

He has filed his candidate paperwork with the state elections office.

Thus far, Barras, whose wife, Lynn, is principal of the May Sands Montessori School in Key West, faces a trio of Republicans. Those include attorney Alexandria Suarez, Islamorada Village Council member Jim Mooney and Ocean Reef candidate Rhonda Lopez, who, according to FloridaPolitics.com, has been the the top fundraiser in the race so far.

In addition to his work at Two Oceans Digital, Barras has served as vice chair of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council.

He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston College and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies.

House District 120, according to Ryan Nicol of FloridaPolitics.com, “covers Monroe County as well as parts of southern Miami-Dade County, and leans Republican,” Nicol writes. “But the seat is not off the table completely for Democrats.

In 2016, Raschein secured a convincing win, defeating her Democratic opponent by nearly 15 percentage points. But that margin closed in 2018, with Raschein winning by just over 6 percentage points. This year, Republicans lack an incumbent on the ballot. Depending on how kind the 2020 cycle is to Democrats, a ‘blue wave’ could potentially push Barras over the top. He’ll likely need to show he can match his Republican opponents’ fundraising ability. Lopez has raised more than $162,000 in four months as a candidate. That doesn’t include her January numbers, which are due by Feb. 10. Barras won’t need to file his first fundraising report — covering the month of February — until March 10.”

familiar contest is shaping up for the Keys’ top prosecutor’s job between incumbent State Attorney Dennis Ward and a familiar challenger: Mark Kohl.

Like two seasoned prizefighters, the two Republicans will return to the political ring this campaign season.

Ward and Kohl will face each other in the Republican primary, and the victor in that contest will face the Democrat Donald Barrett, a Key West attorney, in the general election. All three candidates have worked in the state attorney’s office.

The campaign preceding the Republican primary likely will emerge as the true battleground in this race, as Ward and Kohl have traded jabs, barbs and outright insults for more than a decade.

Kohl was state attorney in 2008, when Ward defeated him. Both ran again In 2012, with Ward seeking re-election and Kohl wanting his old job back.

Catherine Vogel defeated both men, and then hired Kohl, her professional ally, to run the office as executive director.

Four years later, in 2016, Ward ran again and defeated Vogel.

Kohl has said that concerns about Ward’s management of the state attorney’s office prompted him to enter the race. As an example, Kohl points to the forced resignation of former prosecutor Colleen Dunne, who faces a year’s suspension of her law license for failing to provide evidence to a defense attorney representing a man being tried for attempted murder.

Although Barrett was Dunne’s supervisor at the time, Ward was the top dog.

“You lead from the top,” Kohl has said repeatedly.

All three candidates — Ward, Kohl and Barrett — have filed the proper campaign paperwork with Florida’s Department of State, Division of Elections. State Attorney is one position that is handled by the state’s election office, not the county’s, said Supervisor of Elections Joyce Griffin.

ia Triosi, 18, and Ria Rodriguez, 17, knocked a recent class project right out of the water. Or into the water. One of those.

Craig Titus of the College of the Florida Keys gave his English students a problem and solution assignment. Ria, who has volunteered and worked at the Marathon Wild Bird Center, started brainstorming about birds.

“It had to be an idea we cared about,” said Ria. “When she mentioned it in class, I told her I was really passionate about that, too,” said Mia. They designed a “Saving the Pelicans” device and installed it at the Bonefish Bay Motel & RV Sites. It’s a tube that allows fishermen to dispose of fish carcasses below the water line.

“Birds are really attracted to the splash and flash of fish being disposed,” said Mia. “And that’s bad. The birds can become habituated over time, and starve without humans. We need to stop this behavior,” said Ria. “And this is a good, safe solution.”

Both girls were home-schooled before enrolling at College of the Florida Keys. Both have an interest in the environment and art. Both work together at The Art Studio and at Marathon Yacht Club teaching youths how to sail. Mia said she’s likely to pursue a degree and career in biology or marine biology. Ria said she cares about those things too, but has veered off into piercing and tattooing.

“It’s art,” she said, simply.

What’s next for these two? The Weekly strongly suggests a podcast called the Mia and Ria Show! Stay tuned.

Big Pine Academy is a public charter school serving children through fifth grade. It depends on its own fundraising for improvements for the school, supplies for the teachers, maintenance of the school and anything fun for the kids. On Sunday, Feb. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. it will be raffling off $1,000 gift cards to Universal Studios (only 200 tickets will be sold at $20 each) at Boondocks, MM 27.5. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

rifter, a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle, was released back to the sea in sacred style. He was rescued last November when he was found floating and unable to dive off Bahia Honda. After three months of rehabilitation at the Turtle Hospital, including rounds of antibiotics, fluids, vitamins and a healthy diet, Drifter came to the Islander for one final blessing. Tibetan Monks visiting the Keys from the Drepung Gomang

monastery in India performed an animal liberation ceremony for Drifter before releasing him back to his home. Bette Zirkelbach, manager at the Turtle Hospital, called the ceremony “a sacred experience” and unlike anything she had participated in before. She said, “The cadence of the chanting monks reverberated within and around us with such a beautiful energy, bringing a sense of inner peace. It was a perfect send-off for Drifter, one I will not soon forget.”

t’s going to be a showdown between Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian” and Confederate Railroad’s “Queen of Memphis.” The two bands will be sharing the amphitheater stage on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Marathon Community Park. The gates open at noon, with the headliners taking the stage later in the evening.

This is the latest installment of the Coral Head Music Festival that raises funds for a variety of veterans’ charities such as Project Vet Relief. It is organized by the local chapter of the Riders of Post 154 Marathon.

Organizer Rich Anderson said he’s hard pressed to guess at what might be the favorite part of the evening.

“I love all the bands. This is going to be a killer show all the way through,” Anderson said. “It’s a great show from start to finish.”

Joining Night Ranger and Confederate Railroad will be a mix of other acts. The Taylor King band is from Key Largo. Southern Blood is out of Fort Lauderdale. Caffeine Carl and The Buzz are, of course, from Key West and big favorites down that way.

“This will be the first time Night Ranger has ever performed in the Florida Keys, so that’s a big deal,” Anderson said.

Almost as important as the music itself are the incredible fundraising raffles happening in the tents around the field. Folks can bid on rock-star autographed guitars, a cooler of booze, an assortment of items donated by the founder of Easy Rider Magazine and even a chance to win a vintage Corvette autographed by Jay Leno. That drawing will take place later in the year, on Veterans Day. But on the day of the concert, someone is going to win a restored-to-original 1965 Harley Davidson Electra Glide (Pan Head) motorcycle.

Raffle tickets are $100 each and only 500 will be sold. The winner need not be present to win, and the drawing will be broadcast live on Facebook.

“The restoration was done by George Marakas of K&G Cycles in Florida City. It’s a beautiful bike,” Anderson said.

Admission to the one-day concert is $27 in advance at coralheadmusicfest.com or $35 at the gate. There are only a few VIP tickets left at $150 apiece. General admission guests should bring a blanket or lawn chair. No coolers, but beer and wine will be available for sale.

FLEXIBLE FUNDING SCHOOLS ASK VOTERS TO RENEW TAX SHIFT

V

oters from all parties — and those with no party affiliation at all — will have one question to answer on the March 17 ballot for Keys schools.

This year is the fifth time the school district is asking voters to approve a Flexible Funding tax initiative that increases by a half-mill the tax levy that can be used for school district operations, salaries and classroom materials.

In exchange, the school district lowers its capital, or construction, tax by the same half-mill.

“So there’s no tax increase at all; it’s a wash,” said longtime school board member Andy Griffiths.

“We lower one category by the same amount that we raise the other category of funding to give us flexibility in how we can spend money.”

Former superintendent John Padget masterminded the Flexible Funding initiative about 17 years ago in order to identify funding that would make Monroe County teachers’ salaries the highest in the state.

Voters must approve the tax renewal every four years.

“I have nightmares thinking about what would happen without our Flexible Funding initiative,” Griffiths said, adding that the tax currently generates about $15 million per year.

“But on a more personal level, that translates to $15,000 per district employee. So someone making $50,000 today would only be earning $35,000 without the Flexible Funding.”

Voters have always approved the funding strategy, but that doesn’t stop Griffiths from getting nervous.

“It is important to understand that no matter how anyone votes on the referendum it will not increase individual tax bills.

It will only affect where the school district can use the revenue - either the General Fund or the Capital Fund. Our Capital Fund balances are sufficient to meet the needs of the capital program,” Griffiths said. “If the half-mill for operations fails to be approved by the voters, then the Monroe County School District will face a major budget shortfall.”

NEW LOOK FOR HIGHER EDUCATION COLLEGE TO BREAK GROUND SOON ON NEW UPPER KEYS FACILITY

T

he community is invited to College of the Florida Keys’ groundbreaking for its new Upper Keys Center. A ceremony will be held at the site of the new building at MM 106.4 on the Overseas Highway in Key Largo on Friday, March 27 at 9:30 a.m. The 2.12-acre property, which previously housed a “Shell World'' store, has been cleared to prepare for construction of the 38,000-square-foot CFK facility.

The new Upper Keys Center, which is scheduled to open in August 2021, will replace the college’s limited space at Coral Shores High School and will allow the college to double its capacity to serve more than 300 students annually. The

college plans to expand these existing programs in the Upper Keys: nursing, emergency medical technician, paramedic, marine environmental technology, public safety (law enforcement and corrections academies) and apprenticeships. In addition, the college plans to develop new programs.

The college was awarded a $16 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration last year to construct the new facility. An additional $4 million is being raised from local sources.

M

arathon traveled to Key West Friday for the first tennis match of their season.

There were five singles and two doubles matches. The girls team has four returning players this year and looked strong. The boys team has two returning players and a couple players new to the game. “The boy’s team is much less experienced and will greatly improve as the season progresses” said Coach Richard Lorenzo. “I feel confident that both teams will play well through the season. … Go Dolphins.”

2. How long have you been running track? I joined track my sophomore year. I have been running on the team for almost three years now. I am a senior this year so, sadly, it will be my last.

3. Describe one of your best moments in athletics. One of my best moments while on the track team was at the state championship when I ran the 4 x 800 meter relay. I felt like I had really played an important part on the team when I ran across that finish line.

4. Coach Murphy says… “Never be comfortable.” Murph is constantly pushing us to be our best in both running and in our daily lives. This a good reminder to keep my head up and finish the race.

BIG BASEBALL WEEKEND Teams come to town; home run derby part of event

M

arathon High School’s baseball team will welcome teams from four mainland schools this weekend for the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Diamond Classic. The event also will feature a home run derby and the rededication of the baseball field.

The first game of the tournament begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14.

After the game, the home run derby will take place, with each team putting up a player to compete. The team with the most home runs with the allotted baseballs is the winner.

After the home run derby, the new baseball complex will be rededicated to the late Jim Simcic, who was a teacher at the high school and a sports official.

Marathon will then play the nightcap. Games will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, and will continue through the day.

Admission each day is $5. Concessions will be available.

The Marathon baseball team is coached entirely by Conchs. Joey Gonzalez is head coach; assistant coaches are his brother, Luis Gonzalez Jr. and their father, Luis Gonzalez Sr., along with junior varsity coach Sean Roussin.

omething special happened in Marathon on Feb. 6. Two Marathon High School baseball players, Rene Tur Bernal and Diosvaldo Rojas, signed their letters of intent, an informal agreement between the players and a university. Rene will attend Dakota College at Bottineau, North Dakota, this fall and Diosvaldo will start at Clark State Community College in Ohio. This is a great accomplishment for both of these young men and the entire baseball program.

On the day he signed his letter, Rene said, “This definitely will be one for the books.”

The two seniors are breaking important ground — both will be the first in their families to attend college in the U.S. Rene hopes to advance and play for a Division 1 university.

He said he also intends to pursue a career as a teacher, inspired by his grandmother, a teacher in Cuba. Rene has set becoming a teacher in mathematics or the sciences as a long-term goal. He would especially like to help students who face similar struggles to what he faced when arriving in the U.S. While in Ohio, off the field, Disovaldo will be studying business. Again, he’s dreaming of a career in the pros.

MHS baseball coach Joey Gonzalez said these particular students have gone through tremendous challenges to get

to where they are today. Since arriving from Cuba, Rene and Diosvaldo both have broken the language barrier and are now fully fluent in both English and Spanish. All three credit the baseball program as well as the Marathon community.

“I have watched both of them grow from small middle schoolers to men who are like sons, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Gonzalez said.

Though neither spoke a word of English before their arrival, the language of baseball was common to both. Both started playing as youngsters, 5 and 6 years old. Diosvaldo said that, deep down, he always knew baseball would take him far, but never imagined this distance.

Both athletes are looking forward to moving onto a larger playing field. What excites Diosvaldo most about going to college as an athlete is “getting to play against a larger competition.” He is eager to face whatever comes his way.

Rene is both excited and ready to be “exposed to the new challenges presented” and is hoping that the opportunity he has received will inspire other youth throughout Marathon to dedicate themselves to what they love, and to work hard.

And both young men recommend joining Marathon’s baseball team.

Come see Rene and Diosvaldo play. The season opener is Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. on MHS’ new baseball field.

atti Childress and Lisa Wojciechowski have joined the staff of the Keys Weekly Newspapers.

“The Weekly is growing and we are adding to our family. Our goal, as always, is to bring the best possible service to our partners and the best content to our readers,” said publisher Jason Koler.

“The success of the Keys Weekly Newspapers has always been measured through the efforts of our staff and both Patti and Lisa are welcomed additions to our growing staff,” he added. “This will bring a new level of service and support to the business community and our non-profit partners.”

Childress is an Air Force brat who landed in Marathon over 13 years ago with her husband, Todd Childress. She is the mother of two children and numerous critters. When Childress isn’t chasing around her two- and four-legged kids, she can be found curled up with a good book or on her yoga mat.

“I welcome the challenge of improving our already excellent customer service,” said Childress. “My goal is to help our advertisers.”

Wojciechowski has recently relocated from southern New Jersey, bringing her sales and service experience to the Florida Keys to provide excellent solutions to Weekly advertisers.

“I’m excited to have relocated to start a new life and blessed to be a part of a team as amazing as the Keys Weekly staff. I am eager to get involved with the community and provide help where I can!” said Wojciechowski about her relocation.

Wojciechowski was born and raised in southern New Jersey and is a wife of an Army vet and mother to a toddler.

She brings experience in various areas, from mortgage and insurance underwriting to multi-level marketing. She’s passionate about helping others, specifically raising young women into strong confident women.

or weeks, the Weekly has been reporting on an awful crime — the pignapping of a porcine decorative object from Porky’s Restaurant in Marathon. The owners of the eatery, Magda Jedrzejewska and Sean Johnson, were on pins and needles waiting for its safe return, with only cryptic messages passed through the Keys Weekly. On the appointed day for the ransom collection, Magda and Sean had a barful of patrons waiting to see what would happen next. That’s when Marlene Cruz and her crew from Cruz Morato and Associates waltzed in with the pig in hand to collect their ransom of Mojitos. “They had no idea,” said Marlene Cruz, laughing. PODCASTING FINDS ITS PLACE IN PARADISE

From Dr. Phil and Bill Burr to Shaquille O’Neal and Alec Baldwin.

So what’s all the fuss, and what the hell is a podcast, anyway?

The term comes from a combination of the words iPod (remember those digital music players that preceded everyone’s smartphones and Spotify accounts?) and the word “broadcasting.”

Once largely confined to the realm of the ultra-hip tech crowd, podcasting has been growing exponentially in the past five years.

As of this month, there are more than 820,000 of these internet talk radio shows that cover all topics from politics to parenting, music to murder mysteries. Much of the popularity stems from the ability to save or download a podcast episode and listen later, with no need to be there for the live broadcast.

And at least three of those podcasts are coming from both ends of the Florida Keys.

Lisa Malcom is a Key West-based marketing and business consultant. In recent months she has expanded her resume to include “podcast producer,” having completed a comprehensive course on producing, recording and editing her new podcast, “Kick in the Yes.” But Malcom’s biggest thrill is interviewing guests for her 20-minute (give or take) episodes that are relatable to her listeners and have dealt with real-life, realworld decisions and decided to embrace the “yes” rather than remaining in their comfort zones, which aren’t always that comfortable.

Melinda Van Fleet has been hosting the weekly podcast Good Karma Success Coach since April 2019, while Ryan launched Good Karma Sportfishing podcast to coincide with his charter fishing business a bit earlier, in August 2018.

“It’s been an amazing learning experience,” the Van Fleets both said, emphasizing that the most important key to successful podcasting is consistency.

“The average podcast doesn’t last more than seven episodes,” Melinda said.

“And it takes a commitment, but we really enjoy it and in Ryan’s case it’s been an incredible tool to help his primary business.”

Neither the VanFleets nor Malcom are selling ads or sponsorships on their podcasts, a personal decision that’s based on goals and motivations.

Ryan offers five-minute tackle tips and longer fishing stories about what’s in season, and what was biting on his previous charter.

“It’s amazing to see where our listeners come from: Australia, Afghanistan, South America, you name it,” he said.

The VanFleets attribute their success to the Podcasters’ Paradise online class for beginners.

DRC comes to aid of elusive injured manatee

A

manatee that had eluded attempts at help for a badly injured flipper for seven-plus years was rescued last week.

On Feb. 4, Dolphin Research Center’s Manatee Rescue team successfully rescued the adult male manatee from the waters near 15th Street, oceanside, in Marathon. The manatee, known as Scott, had a great amount of monofilament fishing line tightly wrapped and embedded around his left pectoral flipper.

The team deployed a long net into the water where Scott was lingering. By pulling the net closer around the animal they were able to confine him and then bring him onto shore. This animal, who measures 10.5 feet long and weighs 1180 pounds, is well known to rescue teams. He had eluded previous attempts to help him over the last seven-plus years, a great example of how difficult it can be to rescue these large marine mammals that don’t understand rescuers’ intention.

After the rescue, the animal was taken by truck to Miami Seaquarium for evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation, with the hope that he will fully recover from the injury and be a candidate for re-release into Keys waters.

Dolphin Research Center is the licensed manatee rescue team for the Florida Keys and provides this service on a volunteer basis. The nonprofit organization’s activities, including manatee rescues, are funded by admission and program fees, as well as by private donors and members. Founded in 1984, DRC is home to a family of dolphins and California sea lions. Located at 58901 (mile marker 59) Overseas Highway, Grassy Key, Florida, the center is open daily for the public to see narrated behavior sessions and educational presentations, and to participate in interactive programs with the dolphins. The center is an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums.

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

Misunderstood song lyrics can be quite amusing!

S

ongs are wonderful things — when lyrics are married to music and they are perfectly suited for each other, it is absolute magic. Sadly, sometimes things get lost in translation between the recorded vocal and the listener’s ear.

There is actually a term for this: mondegreen. According to Wikipedia, it is “a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony in a way that gives it a new meaning.”

There are many examples of this throughout recorded music history. I’m going to go over some of the most amusing incidents, and then finish with a brand new one that happened to me this past Saturday night.

One of the most infamous examples is Manfred Mann‘s rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s song, “Blinded by the Light.“ The original lyrics, often misheard, are, “Revved up like a deuce.” But so many people, perhaps through Manfred’s vocal stylings, hear the lyrics as this instead: “Wrapped up like a douche.“ I think I can attest, and likely Bruce Springsteen would back me up, that there are no feminine hygiene products in the song.

Another favorite misheard lyric is this one from Jefferson Starship. The song itself consistently makes the worst songs of all time lists, but the misheard lyric is actually quite amusing: “We built this city on sausage rolls.”

Of course, the correct lyric is, “We built this city on rock ‘n’ roll.”

Staying in the ’80s, the Eurythmics had a great misheard lyric: “Sweet dreams are made of cheese.“ My best guess is that this one came about because Annie Lennox tried to rhyme the word “this” with the word “disagree.”

I guess it’s true that everybody really is looking for something … even if it is cheese.

Even the Beatles were not immune. Consider this mistaken lyric: “The girl with colitis goes by.”

“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” is about a girl with “kaleidoscope eyes,” not one with a bowel disorder.

Years ago in a bar, someone came up to me and asked me if I knew the Beatles song, “Troubles.” Being somewhat JOHN of a Beatles fan, BARTUS I told the guy I’d never heard of is a City of Maraa song by that thon councilname. He then man. He also is a musician who proceeded to performs around sing it for me… town. For more “Yesterday, all see johnbartus. my TROUBLES com seemed so far away…” Several uncomfortable seconds passed before I shook my head and just did the song. This was the same guy who then later came up and asked me to play the Rolling Stones song, “Goodbye Groovy Tearstains.” He may have been just jerking my chain.

And while we are still in the 1960s, Jimi Hendrix did not sing, “Excuse me while I kiss this guy!”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

In the Police song, “De Do Do Do De Da Da Da,” it isn’t, “And when the elephants escape you…”

It’s “eloquence.” Especially important — since the next line says something about tying you up and raping you.

Now, it’s on to the actual incident from this past weekend. A lady from the upper Midwest, let’s call her “Kelly,” asked to hear an Elton John song, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” She kept mentioning her favorite line in the song, “The cat let me in your penthouse.” I made numerous attempts to assure her that the only animals in the song were dogs, the howling old owl in the woods, and a horny back toad. But she just would not be convinced that not only did the cat exist, it possessed skills to allow somebody access to a penthouse.

That’s probably enough for now. Until the next time the Bee Gees sing, “Bald Headed Woman.”

onnecting the Florida Keys to the mainland was not just the railroad dreams of Henry Flagler. Others were voicing their desire to see some kind of conduit linking the two, too. Politician George W. Allen gave a speech advocating the necessity of a roadway to bridge mainland Florida and Key Largo that preceded Flagler’s plan and dated back to 1895. Allen would not be the last to express interest in road projects on the islands.

Monroe County residents, especially farmers interested in better roads on which to transport their crops to packing houses established near the train’s right-of-way, began appealing to the county in 1908. The Miami Motor Club lent its voice to the argument in 1919 when its representatives lobbied for the construction of a road to the Keys that could provide their winter tourists with a “suburban” fishing ground.

In 1922, Monroe County officials allocated $300,000 to build a road from North Key Largo’s exclusive Anglers Club to the Key Largo Depot, once located near MM 105.5. The funds were not exclusively for work on Key Largo. A road that paralleled the railway south to Upper Matecumbe Key was also undertaken, as were road projects on the Lower Keys and on Key West.

Real progress began in 1926, when Monroe County issued a $2.5 million bond for road projects, including the construction of a wooden bridge connecting Little Card Point (on the mainland side) to the existing road on North Key Largo. This would become the Card Sound Bridge. Additionally, on the Dade side of the county line, commissioners agreed to finance 11 miles of road that would link Florida City to Little Card Point.

When the road projects were complete, the result was State Road 4A.

It was now possible to drive from the mainland to Key West — for the most part. J. Otto Kirchheiner, chairman of the Monroe County Commission, is credited as being the first person to traverse State Road 4A via automobile, leaving Key West for the mainland on July 18, 1927. State Road 4A, also known by its more familiar name, the Overseas Highway, officially opened to public traffic on January 25, 1928.

The road, however, was incomplete and came to a temporary end at Lower Matecumbe Key. From there, for those looking to continue to the Lower Keys and Key West, it was necessary to board an automobile ferry. To do the job, three automobile ferries were purchased from Gibb’s Shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida for a total cost of $850,000. Each was capable of transporting up to 20 cars at a time and departed the Lower Matecumbe terminal daily at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Vehicles less than 14 feet long were charged $3.50, while those longer than 16 feet cost $6.50. Ticket prices included the driver, but passengers were assessed an additional fee of $1 each. The trip took about four hours, provided the weather and tides cooperated, and ended at No Name Key, where the road picked back up and led the rest of the way to Key West.

Road projects would not cease with the opening of State Road 4A. The building of roads in the Marathon area, as well as two additional ferry terminals, were completed in 1931.

Terminals were constructed on Grassy Key and on the Gulf side of Hog Key, as well as a road connecting them, shortening the highway gap from one 40-mile trip to two shorter ferry rides spanning a total of 28 miles. While those driving from Miami to Key West now spent less time riding on an automobile ferry, they spent just as long sitting in lines awaiting the arrival of the next ferry.

Spread the word: 2020 census starts soon

By April 1, Monroe County households will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census and residents will have three options to respond – online, phone or by mail.

Residents are required by law to participate in the 2020 count. All responses are confidential.

The census determines how many seats Monroe County and Florida have in Congress. (The U.S. Constitution requires that electoral districts be periodically adjusted or redrawn to account for population shifts.) Recovery organizations like FEMA rely heavily on data collected by the census to help guide recovery efforts and plan for future emergencies.

FKAA upgrades on Grassy Key main The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s capital improvement plan continues with upgrades to the Grassy Key transmission main. The $8.3 million project replaces a 2-mile portion of 30inch pipe between MM 58 and 60 on the Overseas Highway. This portion of pipe has begun to succumb to environmental conditions, resulting in interruptions of water service to the Middle Keys. It has also prevented FKAA from providing optimal pipeline operating pressures and contributed to drawdowns of emergency water storage in the Lower and Middle Keys. Motorists may expect lane shifts during construction, but no lane closures are planned.

Construction is expected to continue through November. More information is at fkaa.com.

erriam-Webster Dictionary defines “land of opportunity” as a place where people have many chances to succeed, achieve things, etc. And while it doesn’t outright list the United States under its definition, it probably should, according to Frank

Greenman.

The Marathon institution and self-proclaimed “history nerd” will speak at the Friends of the Marathon Library Speakers’ Series on Thursday, Feb. 20. He’ll use different narratives from our country’s past to understand its present-day success.

Greenman’s talk will be held at St. Columba Episcopal Church, 451 52nd St., Gulf, Marathon on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.

“I see history contextually,” Greenman said. “I look horizontally on dates to see what else was impacting that time. Humans are very complex, so the things that get us to do things are also layered.”

Greenman, who taught history at Marathon High School in the 1970s, uses the city of Marathon as an example. The city was a fishing community of 1,200 people when he was growing up here. It eventually transitioned into the tourist economy we know today, but it was “slow goings,” adds the retired attorney. Now, Marathon enjoys a very powerful retail sector.

“Nobody really knows about it,” he chuckles. “But think about it: about one-third of our homes are winter-occupied, meaning mom and dad come down for Christmas, Aunt Sally and Uncle Bob come in January, and the kids come down for Spring Break.” Each of those homes then becomes a “serial spending unit” when different groups of people come down throughout the year, he said. “You can see it in our sales tax records.”

The phenomenon, which isn’t necessarily the first reason offered as to why Marathon has been successful, does explain why the Marathon Kmart was one of the branches that saved the corporation when it went bankrupt, why there are two Walgreens in town, and the success of the

Home Depot promoted a lightningquick build of a sister store in Key West.

During his talk, Greenman will look beyond the Keys to analyze why America enjoys such enormous wealth not found elsewhere.

Always scanning horizontally through history, Greenman gives us a sneak preview: “We created wealth out of the enormous amount of land we had here.” He will discuss how the real estate industry came to be after the American Revolution, and how the U.S. was the first country to allow people to own land in a massive way.

“Every other land uses people as tenants who pay rent,” explains Greenman. But here, during the 18th and 19th centuries, the right to own land was born. When the banking industry came about, this land was used as collateral for wealth generation, which revolutionized the economic makeup in the U.S., said Greenman.

“We are the richest country in the world because we capitalized on our vast resources available and allowed people to own land,” he adds. “We were lucky, but there are reasons why.”

Greenman adds, “There are so many things about America that are unique that people don’t know. We really were the pathfinders, and it makes us a beacon for the rest of the world.

It absolutely influenced the American Dream.”

n March 2005, Jessica and Jaylyn Hamm married in a traditional ceremony at Jaylyn’s family church in Conroe, Texas. The Hamms were 19 and 20 and just figuring life out. Fifteen years later, they decided to renew their vows with a bit of

flair — by doing it underwater at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo.

“I have always wanted to dive, and Jaylyn has been certified since he was 13,” said Jessica. In August 2018, Jessica completed her open water certification, and the pair dive every chance they can.

“My wife and I have absolutely fallen in love with the sport,” said Jaylyn, “so we’re very eco-conscious about the sea.”

They try to raise awareness any way they can. Even though they own a floor-covering store in Texas, they sell reef-safe Stream2Sea sunscreen there. Jaylyn explains the connection, saying, “I can reach the 99% of the people who aren’t aware of the problem (that sunscreens cause to coral reefs) and broaden our impact for the sea.”

It’s no wonder the playful, ocean-loving couple renewed their vows at Jules’ Undersea Lodge. The underwater hotel is unique in the world as people can only get there by scuba diving. It sits in almost 30 feet of water in a protected “Emerald Lagoon” in Key Largo.

“There is nowhere else in the world you can scuba dive to your underwater hotel room, have pizza delivered, and sleep with the fishes,” says Teresa McKinna, president of Key Largo Undersea Park, home of Jules’ Undersea Lodge. “So naturally, it makes for a very memorable vow renewal.”

“It just sounded like an amazing thing to do together to celebrate the love we have for each other in a way that is unique to us,” Jessica said. Showing her specially-redesigned ring, which added a heart, turtle and stingray around her original engagement stone, she said, “What could be better?”

Jaylyn said, “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that combined what we found to be our passion together and allowed us to renew our passion for each other at the same time.”

Because of the unique location of the lodge, the hotel “merchef” is also the officiant and a scuba instructor. The ceremony amazingly included the traditional wedding details of fresh flowers, wedding toasts and cake cutting, vows, and a romantic steak and lobster dinner, all completed underwater. After the celebrations, the couple stayed the night in the underwater hotel and scuba dove around the Emerald Lagoon to their heart’s content.

Recalling the intimacy and privacy of it all, Jessica says, “It felt like it really was just about the two of us. I won’t forget it.”

arsella Munoz is not your typical 16-year-old at Key West High School. While she spends some of her time studying, reading, hanging out with friends and volunteering in her community, the junior also has been training as a scientific diver working on the cutting edge of coral reef science.

It’s this work that earned the local teen a trip to the nation’s capital as Congresswoman Debbie MucarselPowell’s special guest at the 2020 State of the Union address on Feb. 4, when Munoz represented the youth of Key West, Monroe County and the entire state of Florida.

In addition to attending the address, Munoz was asked to discuss the state of the marine environment here in Florida.

Mucarsel-Powell’s team asked the Monroe County School District to recommend a student for the honor.

“They wanted to find an environmentally conscious student to represent District 26,” said an excited Munoz, who was selected based on her four years of experience with a program called DiveN2Life, which has enabled Munoz to monitor coral disease, collect and process water samples, attend scientific conferences and coordinate a research study on Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease as a scientific research diver-in-training.

The student received her invitation the afternoon of Jan. 29. “At first, I was in disbelief. And then I called everyone who helped me get to this point to share the good news,” she said, acknowledging ahead of time that she was getting nervous “to be given such an influential platform to share my work and message about the need to improve Florida’s water quality and protect the only coral reef in the continental United States.”

• Marsella Munoz’s current research focuses on macro-algae, water quality, and coral settlement with DiveN2Life Director of Science Dr. Brian LaPointe, FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Research Professor and DiveN2Life’s Director of Education and University of North Carolina Wilmington doctoral candidate Kama Cannon.

• She is also one of the principal investigators in an innovative coral engineering project with DiveN2Life program partner Mote Marine Laboratory and DiveN2Life’s secretary and science officer Karen Neely, a researcher at Nova Southeastern University.

“The coral reef is the most biodiverse ecosystem in the ocean,” she explained. “It protects our shorelines from erosion. It supports our fisheries.

It is the backbone of our economy. If we lose the reef, we lose the fish, we lose the protection of our shoreline and we threaten our livelihood in the Keys.”
