here won’t be any box wine or cheese platters, but residents of Marathon are encouraged to drop by City Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. It’s the chance for property owners to review the new FEMA flood maps and consult experts.

The council’s meeting room will be set up with large-scale printouts of the maps, and staffed by an outreach firm working on behalf of FEMA. “There will be a broad spectrum of people there, representing FEMA and cities and counties that can provide information,” said George Garrett, Marathon’s planning director. “That will include experts on how the new maps will affect insurance rates.”

The new maps, which have been years in the making, are based on LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) information of the Keys. The official release of the maps triggers a period of community review; hence, the open house. This is the time to correct any errors. City officials said they have already spotted some — such as elevation data that reflects the roof of a building, rather than the ground.

“In other cases, property owners have made substantial improvements after the data was gathered,” Garrett said, explaining that a

homeowner may have raised the lot in anticipation of building a new home.

In most cases, property owners will find that the base flood elevation (BFE) is higher than what it was previously. That means a higher risk of flooding and, eventually, higher flood insurance premiums. There are, however, steps property owners can take to mitigate the circumstances.

Attend the workshop to understand the changes and risk to your own property.

If the property is currently uninsured for flood, buy it now — before the maps are finalized — and be grandfathered at the current rate.

If the property is insured, continue to pay the premiums. If the home is sold, the existing (less expensive) policy can be transferred to the new owners.

“We need residents to provide us with information and data that documents their concerns or beliefs that the maps are wrong. And, they should be warned, this can get very technical,” Garrett said. Officially, the public has 90 days to offer comments or appeals, but FEMA has said it will delay adding the maps to the Federal Register to ensure the process goes smoothly.

The open house on Wednesday, Jan. 29 runs from 4 to 7 p.m. There may be a brief introduction, but the open format means residents can come and go during that time frame.

repare yourself for some of the most hilariously foulmouthed seniors in Florida.

They’re right here in town, on stage in Marathon Community Theatre’s newest comedy “Four Old Broads.”

When retired showgirl Beatrice (Joanne Zimmerman) decides that she needs a break from Magnolia Place Assisted Living, she attempts to persuade her best friend Eaddy (Marianne Benvenuti) to unfold her praying hands just long enough to take a Sassy Seniors Cruise together. That is, of course, if they can avoid being moved to the nursing home (known as the “dark side”) like so many of their friends before the ship leaves the dock. Determined not to be swallowed up by the growing trend at Magnolia Place, they recruit their friends Imogene (Suzanne Terpos) and Maude (Cheryl Wilcox) and form an investigative crew. The sassy seniors are convinced that recent medication errors around the facility are the work of Nurse Pat Jones (Terry Israel) and Ruby Sue (Charla Garrison), and the four are now in a race against time to ensure they can enjoy some sun on the high seas.

The chemistry among the cast of “Four Old Broads” is apparent, as many have worked together in the past. Terpos is taking the stage for the fifth time at MCT with Jackie O’Neil as her director, and four of the seven cast members worked under O’Neil’s direction as clergy members in 2019’s “Drinking Habits.” Such familiarity allows for quick interplay between the “old broads” and their suitor Sam (Jimmy Zimmerman), and the audience truly

gets a sense that they are watching a group of old friends bicker. “You just have that family feeling,” said Terpos. “It’s a good group of people, and you know what to expect from each other.”

Still, it may be difficult for new patrons to tell who exactly shared the stage last year, as newcomers and veterans alike integrate seamlessly on stage. This is Garrison’s first time in a main stage production at MCT, but as she describes, the cast and crew have made her feel at home and gave her creative license from the start.

“It’s been such a wonderful experience to have this community,” she said. “Jackie is amazing. She’s clear, concise and genuine in delivering information. She lets us come up with our own creative ways to express our characters and makes suggestions instead of telling us exactly how to say everything.”

“Four Old Broads” has a title that, by the cast’s own admission, may call out to an older demographic of patrons, but the show’s refreshingly risqué humor will appeal to all ages. As Terpos remembers, “when I first got the part of Imogene, I didn’t know if I could do it, because it was a little bit vulgar.

But when I read the script, I laughed the whole time. Even though I don’t say those words in real life, I found that when I did it on stage, it felt … good!” Garrison adds, “It’s appealing to people of different ages. It’s just a feel-good play.”

“Four Old Broads” runs on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through Feb. 8, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Feb. 2.

BRIEFLY FKAA offers discounts for seniors, disabled veterans The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority is continuing its effort to assist income-eligible seniors and permanently disabled veterans by reducing their monthly utility bills. This discount removes the base facility charge for the water bill and will also eliminate the wastewater base facility charge for those customers in FKAA wastewater districts (Bay Point, Big Coppitt, Cudjoe Regional, Conch Key, Duck Key, Key Haven and Layton). Qualified customers may save up to $42.11 per month. This assistance is currently provided to about 2,000 households in the Keys. To be eligible the applicant must be 60 years of age or older or a permanently disabled veteran on the date of application. The household income must be less than the maximum benefit limits set by the Social Security Administration for benefits. The current maximum income for a single person household is $36,132 and, for a residence with more than one occupant, the maximum allowed income is $72,264. Discounts are only available on the applicant’s primary residence.

To apply, customers complete the application online or at any of FKAA’s three customer service offices. New applications are accepted throughout the year but will expire on March 31 of the following year. To continue the discount without interruption, customers must reapply by March 31.

r. Henry Waterhouse and his son left their home in Vermont hoping the warmer climates found in the West Indies would help to fortify the doctor’s health. They would arrive in Key West during the hot summer months of 1828.

A doctor by training and practice, Waterhouse opened an island practice, but also served the community in other capacities. For one, he served as the newly incorporated city of Key West’s treasurer.

From a handful of first-hand observations about his time at Key West, Waterhouse demonstrated himself to be, while perhaps a bit socially awkward, the kind of man who cared about the welfare of the people around him.

When rumors of an outbreak of smallpox were reported at Havana, Waterhouse, understanding the close working relationship between the ports at Havana and Key West, had the foresight to stock up on the vaccine.

Subsequently, it would be posted in the Thursday, March 19, 1829, edition of the local paper that Dr. H.S. Waterhouse “has procured from the government hospital at Havana, a supply of pure, fresh vaccine or Cow Pox Matter to inoculate those for smallpox who may desire it.” Shots became available the following Saturday, on March 21, as advertised, to all those who stopped by his office.

Waterhouse is said to have possessed a vast book collection, considered the largest on the island. Waterhouse is also seemingly compared to the fictional character of Ichabod

Crane, from Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” published nearly a decade prior, in 1820. Like the willowy Crane, Waterhouse was described as having “a sallow complexion and cadaverous expression, with the contours of his mouth altered by an ill-fitting set of false teeth which he assured his friends were manufactured from the tusk of a hippopotamus. His erudition and flawless diction earned him the nickname of ‘Dr. Syntax.’”

Waterhouse would go on to serve additional community posts, including that of Key West’s first postmaster.

The island’s post office was established at the corner of Caroline and Front streets. He began his post on Feb. 18, 1829. He would resign his duties several years later when he moved to Indian Key sometime in late 1833 or early 1834. The arrival of a doctor at Indian Key must have made him a welcomed addition to the island’s growing population.

Waterhouse replaced Indian Key’s first postmaster, Silas Fletcher. Tragically, Waterhouse’s time at Indian Key would be short-lived. A story in the Key West Register, dated Jan. 24, 1835, reported, “On Saturday last about 9 o’clock p.m. a rumbling noise was heard in a W.N.W. direction from this place and in a short time a violent rush of wind followed which continued near 10 minutes with great force than has ever been felt here for many years.

The schooner Fair America was blown upon the beach, near Browne’s wharf and several boats were injured. To windward the blow was sensibly felt and some damage done, and several lives lost among which we lament to mention the drowning of Dr. H.S. Waterhouse and his little son near Indian Key.” The follow-up to the story would provide additional information. “Dr. Henry S. Waterhouse and his son, residents of Indian Key left the island on Saturday Evening the 17th instant in a boat on an excursion of fishing. The following morning it was discovered that they had not returned — boats were immediately dispatched in search of them, the boat in which they went was very soon discovered bottom upwards, and on further examination during the day, the body of the doctor was found and brought to this island this day interred. No discovery has yet been made of his son. It is the general opinion that the boat capsized in a very severe squall which occurred during the evening they left the Key.” Brad Bertelli is curator of the Keys History & Discovery Center.

t the first BOCC meeting of 2020, the county commissioners authorized Mayor Heather Carruthers to execute funding agreements related to FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) grants to the owners of five properties in Key Largo, Marathon and Key West.

The commissioners held the agenda item to make a further point about funding that’s still available to other property owners under the programs.

“I held these two agenda items for an explanation from Karl. I’m excited about these because we’re getting some real money to help our residents,” Carruthers said.

Karl Bursa, Monroe County’s chief of floodplain regulatory operations, updated the commissioners on the status of the five properties: “These are flood mitigation grants from FEMA. These five projects have been accepted by the DEO and are now in their final approval state,” he said. “This is money that helps residents, individuals elevate above the floodplain. Feds pay for 75% of it, and sometimes more for vets. That’s the bulk of it.”

Commissioner Sylvia Murphy confirmed that the remaining 25% of project funding will come from property owners themselves.

Bursa hopes to expand the successful federal cost-sharing program to others who qualify.

“We hope this will be the first step in a much wider program,” he said. “It’s the spearhead project.”

Additionally, he noted, the mitigation and renovation efforts will be a net benefit to the entire community by removing properties that could inundate neighbors.

“This really helps our entire community,” he said.

Commissioner Michelle Coldiron queried, “Is it too late for residents to apply?” Bursa said that it wasn’t. “It’s a revolving door of funding. The funding pool from Irma is closing down, but Michael still has a pool.”

Bursa explained that his department hopes to continue to pull actively from the funding pool to help Monroe County residents get ahead of the storms by building more resilient buildings that sit above the new floodplain base elevations.

Coldiron continued, hinting at the intent behind some of her questions. “I know a lot of this, but I’m asking for the benefit of the public — is it just for unincorporated Monroe?” Bursa confirmed that the funding is available for anyone in Monroe, both in the municipalities as well as unincorporated county lands.

The commissioners noted that active military, law enforcement and other public service officers are eligible to receive an even higher federal costshare; all of the approved contracts showed FEMA funding for 83% of total project costs.

rian Fonseca, the director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University, will speak at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at St. Columba Episcopal Church as part of the Friends of the Marathon Library Speaker Series. The foreign policy expert will take a broad look at the crisis of democratic governance in the Americas. Specifically, Fonseca will analyze the increasing geopolitical competition between the U.S. and Russia and China for influence in the hemisphere.

“For the U.S.’s national interest, the Western Hemisphere is vital,” said Fonseca. “The region has come a long way in the process of democratization, but we’re now starting to see the effects of the failure to further deepen democratic reforms. … China is the strategic threat of our time, and Russia is the operational threat.”

Fonseca brings 17 years of experience in intelligence and security, with a focus on China and Latin America. “I school-trained in China. I thought I would be a China expert,” he said.. “But, I was hired to research Latin American militaries and security, and now I put the two together to analyze the impact of China on the Latin American region.” He adds, “It’s been an interesting career trajectory, and it started because I needed a job.”

By April 1, Monroe County households will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census and residents will have three options to respond – online, phone or by mail.

Residents are required by law to participate in the 2020 count. All responses are confidential. The census determines how many seats Monroe County and Florida has in Congress. (The U.S. Constitution requires that electoral districts be periodically adjusted or redrawn to account for population shifts.) Recovery organizations like FEMA rely heavily on data collected by the census to help guide recovery efforts and plan for future emergencies.

FKAA upgrades on Grassy Key main The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s capital improvement plan continues with upgrades to the Grassy Key transmission main. The $8.3 million project, which starts this week, replaces a 2-mile portion of 30-inch pipe

between MM 58 and 60 on the Overseas Highway. This portion of pipe has begun to succumb to environmental conditions, resulting in interruptions of water service to the Middle Keys. It has also prevented FKAA from providing optimal pipeline operating pressures and contributed to drawdowns of emergency water storage in the Lower and Middle Keys. Motorists may expect lane shifts during construction, but no lane closures are planned. Construction is expected to continue through November. More information is at fkaa.com.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

Here’s what the community has to say:

Is the sanctuary listening?

T

his sanctuary “restoration blueprint” is a fatally flawed document that is not supported by the majority of our local residents. This document did not go through an open and honest public process for creation, and that’s why it does not reflect the will of the majority of our residents.

And while this document isn’t one that our residents support, our residents actually care a lot about our marine environment and have good ideas on what the focus of this document should have been.

The public feels that water quality issues, brought on by pollution from the mainland, are the biggest threat to our Florida Keys marine ecosystem.

The public supports more artificial reefs to enhance and support marine life and take the pressure off of coral reefs, additional mooring balls at our reefs and popular dive sites to help reduce anchor damage, and adding channel markers to prevent prop scarring the sea-grasses.

And the public feels that tourists are a major contributing source of the problems.

They’d like to discuss the elimination of the two-day mini-season. And they’re suggesting required certification for tourists renting boats and better education and outreach to make tourists aware of sanctuary rules.

Yet, this current draft of the Sanctuary Restoration Blueprint does nothing to address any of these issues.

Instead, some of the sanctuary’s proposed regulations actually favor high-intensity tourism activities over low-intensity local usage. Many feel that some on the SAC board have used this document to unfairly create advantages for themselves. And, most feel the sanctuary’s proposals to restrict access to local reefs, back-bay sandbars, and waterways, will not solve any problems — but will instead create a new one by transferring and consolidating pressure onto other areas.

Beth Ramsay-Vickrey is a longtime Keys resident; she grew up in Marathon and now resides in the Lower Keys. She represented her district as a county planning commissioner, and sat on the Keys Energy Advisory Board, focusing attention on utility and conservation issues. She currently sits on the Lower Keys Chamber board of directors.

Opposition to the sanctuary’s “preferred plan” at public meetings and on the regulations.org website has been tremendous. Of the more than 450 people who’ve submitted online comments thus far, most are in objection.

Our county and incorporated cities have voiced concerns through resolutions and some chambers of commerce have sent letters of objection. FWC has voiced its jurisdictional objection, and the chair has written that “the Blueprint takes conservation efforts in the wrong direction and not much in the proposal would help the Keys ecosystem or fisheries”.

The public backlash in our county has become so overwhelming that the sanctuary started a “Stand Up for Florida Keys Sanctuary” Facebook page to beg people across the country to submit public comments of support.

How ridiculous is it that because the people of the Florida Keys do not support this Restoration Blueprint, the sanctuary is instead asking people from the northeast, the west coast, the Midwest, anywhere but here, to chime in. They’re asking people outside of the Florida Keys, who don’t operate boats, and who wouldn’t know the difference between a horse-conch and a queen-conch, to support the plans our own Keys citizens have rejected!

This new strategy to develop artificial support for this document does not instill public trust in the sanctuary or this process.

With a document that is so fatally flawed and unsupported, it is crucial that the promised rewrite represents the will and the voice of the majority of our local Keys residents.

For the past few months, the sanctuary has been telling us “they are listening”. The results of this rewrite will let us know if we’ve been heard or ignored.

That’s right, on Saturday, Jan. 25, the Key Colony Beach Community Association is hosting the fourth annual Coconut Crawl. It’s a fundraiser for the Marathon campus of the FKSPCA. Participants start at Key Colony Beach City Hall between the hours of 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., then set out to hit five nearby (walking distance) watering holes, collecting a poker hand along the way in whichever order tickles their fancy: Sparky’s Landing Island Fish Company Causeway Pizza Key Colony Inn Cabana Club The stroll, or crawl depending on the beverage intake, ends at the Glunz Ocean Beach Club and Havana Jack’s Restaurant and Bar, which has donated the venue and food for the awards ceremony.

“We actually will give out six cards, so you can make the best hand out of five,” said organizer Gail Cortelyou. The prize for best hand, sponsored by the KCBCA, is $500. Awards will also be given out for best costume (“We encourage costumes!” Cortelyou said) and best team spirit. New this year will be a scavenger hunt.

“We’ll hand out a piece of paper with about 40 questions on it that our fun-loving friends can find the clues to along the way,” she said. The winner of the scavenger hunt will also take home a prize.

Organizers hope to top their 100plus crowd from 2019, and raise even more money for the local animal shelter in 2020.

“We are so grateful to the Key Colony Beach Community Association,” said Tara McFarland, the Marathon shelter director. “We are always amazed by the generosity of the Middle Keys and Key Colony Beach residents.”

Besides sponsorship by the local restaurant and bars, Promotions Guy has donated the T-shirts. Area businesses have put some swag in goodie bags that will be passed out at registration.

BOARD MAY CHANGE SCHOOL START TIMES MANDY MILES

ven under ideal circumstances, school bus stops and schedules are complicated equations of cause and effect.

With buses and drivers serving multiple schools, every action in one area produces an equal and opposite reaction elsewhere.

A later start time at one school requires an earlier start elsewhere.

Monroe County School District transportation officials have balanced these tedious equations for decades, adjusting stops and schedules, and ultimately getting thousands of students to and from school.

But today’s circumstances are far from ideal and are about to worsen.

In addition to the persistent and nationwide shortage of school bus drivers, the replacement of Cow Key Bridge in April will involve regular lane closures that are likely to cripple traffic at the nexus of Key West and Stock Island.

Randy Fabal, transportation director, and Pat Lefere, executive director of facilities and planning, on Jan. 21 outlined the anticipated challenges for members of the Monroe County School Board and recommended changing the start times for four Lower Keys schools come April.

“Traffic remains the big unknown,” Lefere told the board. “We don’t know the extent of the impacts, if any. But by changing a couple of schools’ start times, it opens us up to more efficiency.”

They’re suggesting the board change the start times of Sugarloaf and Gerald Adams from 8 a.m. to 7:30, a move opposed by several Sugarloaf parents who have shared on social media their concerns about dark mornings at bus stops, exhausted kids and earlier bedtimes.

Key West High School students could sleep for an extra hour, as the high school

would start at 8:45 a.m., instead of 7:30. And Horace O”Bryant would start at 8 a.m. rather than 8:45.

No vote was taken Tuesday, but will be at the next board meeting, in February, Acting Superintendent Terri Axford said.

Meanwhile, the district desperately needs bus drivers, many of whom moved away following Hurricane Irma.

A nationwide driver shortage stems from a variety of factors, including limited work hours and high barriers to entry, Mike Martin, executive director of the National Association of Pupil Transportation, said in a 2019 report. “Drivers generally need a commercial driver’s license, which requires training, sometimes without pay.

“Unless you have something to fill in the gaps (between drives), you can’t make the money you need to support your family,” Martin said. “These days, most people are looking for some kind of regular, fulltime hours.”

The local school district recently made two of its bus driver positions full-time jobs with benefits, but still struggles to provide drivers to sporting events and other activities.

HOOKED Marathon offers free kids’ angler program

O

n Jan. 18, the first 2020 Fishing Fun event took place at Crane Point Museum. The event, organized by the City of Marathon Parks and Recreation department, introduced beginners to the sport of fishing.

Learning centers run by the Marathon Wild Bird Center and the Turtle Hospital were a big part of this event, teaching budding anglers how to keep birds and turtles safe when fishing.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was also on-site with information on safe and legal fishing.

Local and snowbird fishermen, as well as some local high school youths, discussed bait types, what is in their tackle box, and how to bait hooks with live and frozen shrimp.

The catch-and-release event was made possible through contributions from the Fish Florida organization (fishfloridatag.org), which donated 100 tackle boxes and fishing poles; the Organized Fishermen of Florida-Marathon Chapter, which made a cash donation to purchase bait and rigging needs; Publix, for providing snacks; and numerous avid fishermen.

ooking for a natural alternative to the conventional soaps and skincare products found on most grocery store shelves?

Yola Kryska, founder of Splash Soap Company, may have some alternatives in mind.

According to Kryska, she never intended for a hobby that began 10 years ago in Chicago to turn into a full-blown business. “When I was living in Chicago, I couldn’t really find products with good quality natural ingredients,” she said. Unable to find what she wanted on local store shelves, Yola started with her own research and began experimenting with soaps and bath bombs. “It was mostly trial and error for many years before I could even use my own products,” she remembers, but once she found a few winning combinations, everything began to take off. While Kryska began making soaps for herself and her family, the word about her products quickly spread through networks of friends, and before she knew it, her home soap-making had exploded into a company.

After visiting the Keys for years, Yola and her husband Art decided to relocate permanently in 2012. Once she began selling her products in the islands, the feedback from satisfied customers was, in her words, “magnificent.” While soaps and bath bombs were her earliest products and remain bestsellers, Kryska began using her customers’ input on products and ingredients they desired to expand her product line. Items like the company’s solid shampoo bars offer a long-lasting

and travel-friendly approach to hair care without any plastic waste. A quick look on Splash Soap Company’s website (www.splashsoapcompany. com) reveals a full line of options from scrubs and deodorants to bug repellents.

Kryska soon found that her ecofriendly skincare company aligned well with an environmentally conscious (and largely sun-damaged) community. “We all forget that the skin is our biggest organ,” she said. In an increasingly crowded market of “natural” products, it can be difficult for an average consumer to discern between the “real” and “fake” ones, but when asked how she draws the line between ingredients she will or won’t use in her products, Yola leaves no gray area. “I always say, the fewer ingredients the better. Always look at the ingredients list and make sure you can pronounce everything on it. As soon as you come across a word and you don’t know what it is or you can’t pronounce it, you don’t want it anywhere near your skin.”

Although Splash Soap Company is no longer a spare-room project in Yola’s home, she is proud to say that her products are still manufactured at her warehouse in the Keys. With help from one other individual, she and her husband still produce the company’s products and run most of the business. “We had soap everywhere in our house, so we couldn’t do it at home any more, but we love to keep things small and family-based,” said Kryska.

“That way we still have true control over our products, ingredients and vendors.”

Repeated honor to host Wounded Warriors

O

n Jan. 10, Dolphin Research Center (DRC) was honored to host the Charles Evans Day for the Wounded Warrior Project with a visit from the Soldier Ride. We welcomed upwards of 70 participants and numerous support staff for this special event. More than 40 veterans enjoyed a fun-filled, complimentary Dolphin Encounter swim with the DRC dolphins. The event was made possible through our partnerships with the Charles Evans Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Once more, the Florida Keys community came together to provide a wonderful experience for the brave men and women who have served in our country’s armed forces and returned home with a myriad of injuries. DRC staff, volunteers and members of the general public lined the walkway to welcome our military heroes when they arrived. The City of Marathon and Marathon Fire & Rescue provided a delicious lunch, catered by Irie’s Island Eats. Captain Hook’s Dive Shop, Marathon, loaned wetsuits free of charge. Each participant also received digital images from their dolphin swim.

The men and women of our military give their very best in service to this country. This event is a way that we can give back. We greatly appreciate everyone who worked with us to make the day a joyful success.

ounded military veterans interacted with dolphins as a part of the Florida Keys Soldier Ride, a trip through the Florida Keys to Key West that also involved riding adaptive bicycles down segments of the Keys Overseas Highway on Jan. 10.

Soldiers swam with the dolphins at Marathon’s Dolphin Research Center, after cycling in the Upper Keys. They shared dolphin kisses with the mammals, giving flipper shakes and getting dorsal fin pulls.

Organized by the Wounded Warrior Project with help from the Keys community, Soldier Ride inspires participants while raising funds for injured comrades still recovering in American military hospitals.

Retired U.S. Army medic Rachael Rodgers, who had her left leg amputated below the knee, first participated in the Soldier Ride experience in 2015.

“What makes this experience special for me, personally, is the camaraderie with the veterans,” she said. “It’s a very unique network and especially with disabled veterans because, you know, I guess we’re a little more sympathetic toward each other with our experiences.

“Animals that we had the pleasure of swimming with today, they are very sympathetic animals,” said Rodgers of the dolphin encounter. ”They’re very in tune with their senses and in tune with our senses, and so I think that also helps us because it helps ease us.

“You have to find any little bit of joy in any experience that you can,” she said about rehabilitation. “Laughter is truly the best medicine.”

The mission of Wounded Warrior Project is to raise public awareness and support for the needs of severely injured members of the military. The organization's cross-country and Keys bicycle trips provide rehabilitative opportunities for injured soldiers.

The five generating interactions promote development: metal carries water (buckets, pipes); water nourishes wood; wood fuels fire; fire forms earth/ash; earth produces metal.

Such element pairs imply good luck and success.

The five overcoming interactions control development or create destruction: metal penetrates wood (chopping, ax, sawing); wood separates earth (tree roots); earth absorbs water; water quenches fire; fire melts metal. These interactions bring bad luck and destruction.

The interplay of the zodiac and the element cycles means a metal rat year like 2020 only comes around every 60 years. And the present-day alignment (or misalignment) of all these different philosophies determines each person’s fortune for the upcoming year.

2. How long have you been playing basketball? I have been playing basketball since I was only 3 years old. In sixth grade I joined the Marathon team. My freshman year I made varsity, and I plan on playing until I graduate, if not even further into my future.

3. Describe one of your best moments in athletics. It was our game against Palm Glades, and I scored 27 points in that one game. It was the greatest feeling knowing how happy my teammates were for me.

4. Coach Freeman says… “Go up strong”. Coach has been telling me this since my first year on varsity, because I miss my layups. These words are my encouragement.

COUNTY TALKS PRIORITIES WITH STATE LEGISLATORS

M

onroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi and legislative affairs director Lisa Tennyson traveled to Tallahassee for the state’s opening sessions last week to discuss the county’s legislative priorities with Capitol officials, including State Rep. Holly Raschein and state Sen. Anitere Flores. City of Marathon Manager Chuck Lindsey also attended some of the meetings.

The county has several relevant bills coming in front of the House and Senate in the next week. Bills include: Vacation Rental Bills SB 1128 and HB 1011; an Air Ambulance Bill (SB 736) where Monroe County Fire Rescue will discuss the successes of Trauma Star; Sovereign Immunity SB 1302; and the Affordable Housing bills SB 998 and HB 1339.

In addition, the county and cities are asking for the full $20 million for Stewardship Act funding, and for the Stewardship funding to be put into the Land Acquisition Trust Fund, so that it recurs year after year.

“These are two big legacy efforts, and the Florida Keys are rallying to get these accomplished this session, which is the last for Raschein and Flores, both of whom are termed out after this,” said Tennyson.

Meet the artist behind the onewoman art show at MCT TIFFANY DUONG

ulie Joyce is “so tired, but so excited.” The painter has just opened her one-woman art show “An Artist’s Journey” at the Marathon Community Theatre (MCT). Joyce, a watercolor, collage and mixed-media artist, has a herculean 60 pieces on display at MCT and is raising money for the theater. She’s also hosting a meet-and-greet on Jan. 30.

“I feel an excitement each time I begin a painting as I try to capture the tropical essence; and as the paints mix and mingle, there is a true love affair,” she writes in an artist’s statement about the show. Bright sunsets and shadowed palm trees are her signature vista, and Joyce’s vibrant works tell the story of a woman in love with her life in the Keys. “It’s what people know me for, but I also love mangoes and birds,” she says.

“And other tropical things; I just enjoy all of that.”

Before this adventure in tropical living and art, Joyce was an international flight attendant with TWA for 35 years and lived in New York. “I’ve always felt a gypsy in my soul,” she says, recalling what prompted her wanderlust. “That gypsy pulls me on a different journey now -- into the world of luscious, bright, transparent watercolors….”

This second leg of her life’s journey started when she was flying and received a handmade note from her supervisor with a small tulip painted on the front. “I remember saying to my husband, ‘I think this is watercolor. Wouldn’t it be nice to paint a little flower and send it out on a card -- your own work?’” And so, the flight attendant bought a little watercolor kit and some cheap paper and began experimenting. Right about when she realized “This isn’t working,” Joyce serendipitously met local watercolor artist Connie Hauk, who taught and mentored her for 14 years. Joyce recalls feeling like she was “off the ground” from her very first lesson. “I just knew it was magic, the way you take a little piece of paint and water and see what happens when they commingle.”

Her work has been described as “happy, colorful and done with care.” Joyce is satisfied with the description. “Those elements are a part of everything I do,” she acknowledges. Still, when her work was hung on opening night, the artist initially felt vulnerable.

“I put my whole painting experience out there for the entire town, and that’s humbling,” she said, “but when someone wants it, connects with it, it builds your confidence.”

One of her first customers, an MCT board member who lost her home in Irma, told Joyce, “The colors in this painting are perfect. I want to buy it because I finally have a home again to hang it in.” The interaction left Joyce emotional. “She just got her home and she wants my art to be a part of it.

That’s really special.”

The show will run until Feb. 8, and works can be viewed Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as well as before the curtain and during intermission of MCT’s main-stage comedy “Four Old Broads.” You can “Meet the Artist”

on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MCT. Twenty percent of proceeds from the art show will go to MCT as “a gesture of the artist helping the arts.”

With gratitude, Joyce tells the Weekly, “I don't know if i’ll ever be able to do something like this again, and I am so glad I stayed with it. I still have that little tulip card in my studio to remind me.”
