lorida Keys Brewing Company’s Iguana Bait kölsch is now available for purchase at all Publix supermarkets in the Florida Keys. This marks the first occasion that any grocery store from Key Largo to Key West will offer locally brewed and canned beer on their shelves for purchase.

Not only is the beer 100% produced in the heart of Islamorada, it’s also entirely owned and operated by residents of the Keys and is crafted with ingredients sourced locally.

Iguana Bait is a honey-hibiscus kölsch made with local Keys honey and hibiscus. It’s a light, refreshing beer with sweetness from the honey and a slight tart fruitiness from the hibiscus. Kölsch is a traditional German-style beer hailing from Cologne, made using only barley, hops, water and yeast. Florida Keys Brewing Co. complemented its German-style kölsch with Hallertauer hops, local honey and hibiscus.

The name comes from the local iguanas’ voracious appetite for hibiscus flowers that decorate the island chain. Iguana Bait has a 5.2% ABV and 20.4 IBU. It’s available in 12-ounce six-packs at all Publix stores in the Florida Keys.

Florida Keys Brewing Company (FKBC) flourished out of a husband-and-wife collaboration of imaginative home brewing and a vision to give locals and tourists alike a truly authentic Keys product.

The sole owners, Craig and Cheryl McBay, launched their dream into reality in 2014 when they renovated a warehouse in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District to accommodate their first brewery and tasting room. This original location is still where most of the beer is brewed, and the original taproom can be enjoyed on special occasions and every Art Walk, held on the third Thursday every month.

“FKBC is the Upper Keys’ first brewery and only brewery that is 100% owned, operated and brewed here,” said Craig McBay. “We are driven by our love of creating a wide range of top quality beers and supporting our community and ocean conservation.”

Iguana Bait can also be enjoyed in the Florida Keys Brewing Co. taproom at MM 82 in Islamorada, Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., along with 19 other 100% locally crafted Keys brews.

Ocean Studies moving to Key Largo

O

cean Studies Charter, an A-rated marine science and Montessori based school, is moving to a new location in Key Largo near MM 100. The school is scheduled to be open for kindergarten through fifth-grade students in August 2020, and plans are in place to add a middle school in August 2021.

Ocean Studies is seeking support from the community. The school will purchase its own facility, construct nine classrooms, equip a quality marine science lab, provide outdoor space to learn and play, and incorporate a middle school so that students can carry their passion for the environment through to high school and beyond. The estimated cost for the project is $3.3 million.

“I am very excited about the future of our organization and the opportunity to continue to change children’s lives,” said David Thompson, president of the board of directors. “Our teachers and students have achieved so

much in our nine-year history, and now, we are charging forward into the future with great momentum. Our permanent facility will afford this unique education for generations to come.”

“I feel honored to be leading this campaign and to secure the future of Ocean Studies, a truly special public school that will make a positive difference to so many lives,” said Nicky Rudolph, vice president of the Ocean Studies Charter School board.

Ocean Studies was founded on the need to educate youth in order to preserve the fragile South Florida environment, in a way that immerses and engages the students, so that learning is interactive, explorative and fun.

All students attend weekly field labs, working alongside local and national organizations such as REEF, Fish and Wildlife and more.

“We are thrilled to be moving to our new location,” said principal Trisha Woods. “We are excited to provide new and innovative opportunities to the children of the Florida Keys through weekly field labs in our community and hands-on experiences in our classrooms.”

In 2018-19, third-grade students worked with NOAA on a year-long mangrove and sea grass restoration project; fifth-grade students partnered with the Institute of Tropical Ecology

and Conservation and traveled to Panama’s remote Bocas del Toro Province to research and compare ecosystems.

The school is nationally designated as an Ocean Guardian School by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); it is listed as a Green School by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, as well as being an A-rated Florida school.

With two certified teachers in each classroom, small groups are happening in two different sections of the classroom while independent workers are immersed in their lessons. Children have freedom of movement. They can read to each other in the learning lounge (a flexible seating arrangement that looks more like a living room than a classroom) or engage in a technology assignment.

he one ingredient that goes into the making of a great legend is a kernel of truth. The legend of Black Caesar, perhaps the Florida Keys’ most infamous pirate, has a doozy. While many stories have been attributed to Black Caesar, a pirate who has manifested into several forms over the course of more than 100 years, this story will address the earliest version attributed to him.

The original Black Caesar is said to have been a large, powerful African chieftain who was captured by slave traders and brought to the Americas, where he would be sold into slavery. It was sometime in the early years of the 18th century. During the slave ship’s Atlantic crossing, a storm was encountered and the ship wrecked along the northern reaches of the Florida Reef.

Miraculously, the African chieftain and a single crew member, one whom he had befriended, were the only two to survive. With the help of a recovered longboat, the two would wash up on the shore of Elliott Key and embark on piratical adventures.

One crystal clear aspect of the original Black Caesar story is that he abandons his Elliott Key lair and joins forces with Blackbeard, probably the most famous pirate in the world. The powerful and bloodthirsty Black Caesar, according to legend, is said to have served as a trusted lieutenant among Blackbeard’s crew. The nugget of truth at the core of the Black Caesar legend is that a man named Caesar was, in fact, one of the 18 men on board Blackbeard’s sloop Adventure when it was attacked by Lt. Maynard’s British forces off of North Carolina’s Ocracoke Island on November 22, 1718.

Caesar, spelled Cesar in the historical record, was listed as a Common Sailor on the King’s documents of the day and one of at least five slaves captured aboard the Adventure.

According to Captain Charles Johnson’s “A General History of the Pyrates,” once considered the primary source on all things piratical when it was published in 1726, “Teach (Blackbeard) had little or no Hopes of escaping, and therefore had posted a resolute Fellow, a Negro, whom he had bred

up, with a lighted Match, in the Powder-Room, with Commands to blow up when he should give him Orders, which was as soon as the Lieutenant and his Man could have entered, that so he might have destroy’d his Conquerors: and when the Negro found how it went with Black-beard, he could hardly be perswaded from the rash Action by two Prisoners that were in the Hold of the Sloop.”

It is an interesting description of the attack on the Adventure for two reasons. The “resolute Fellow” is generally considered to be Caesar. First, the man does not sound like some hulking, fierce pirate – nor treated as one by Blackbeard.

Second, the man was said to have been “bred up” or raised in some fashion by Blackbeard and that does not support one of the central tenets of the Black Caesar legend that boasts he was a fellow pirate and trusted lieutenant who had joined Blackbeard’s bloody crew.

In the case of Black Caesar, the kernel of truth acting as some kind of supporting document to bolster the legend actually contradicts it.

The Caesar (or Cesar) on Blackbeard’s sloop Adventure, though not the legendary African chieftain of legend and lore, was convicted of piracy and hanged, thereby putting an end to the pirate legend.

Black Caesar, however, would rise again. That story, though, is for another day.

FIU HOSTS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION MASTER COURSE

I

n the fall, Florida International University (FIU) and its local partners, Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) and John Pennekamp State Park, hosted an environmental education workshop all about the ecosystems in the Keys. Through exploration and hands-on workshops, participants gained a first-hand connection and appreciation of the local environment.

The Florida Master Naturalist course is a weekend-long course themed around environmental education. Past themes have included marine science, place-based learning, the creation of engaging environmental centers, and the development of community program.

Participants visited different community partners to learn about environmental education initiatives in the community. They reviewed what has and has not worked for various organizations and what are the current best

practices in environmental education.

They also learned how to use outreach and education about the environment to motivate others to protect and conserve the natural world.

The budding naturalists and educators from various non-profits and government institutions spent the weekend exploring how to engage audiences with various backgrounds, educations, and points of view about connecting with the natural world through environmental education programming.

Starting off the program at CRF, participants discussed the many citizen-science engagement opportunities that the coral restoration organization uses to involve the public. Forrest Cortney, CRF’s Key West intern, described how the nonprofit has managed to keep a strong, motivated volunteer force through campaigns like CRF’s plastic-free tree campaign to its annual coralpalooza extravaganza.

Moving on to FIU’s Aquarius Reef Base Mission Control, Analisa Duran, Aquarius education and outreach coordinator, explained the Aquarius Academy, an international virtual field

trip, allowing for people all around the world to experience what it’s like to conduct research in an underwater marine science lab.

The day ended at Pennekamp, where Lindsey Crews, park services specialist, described the role of rangers as well as the logistics that go into creating an engaging environmental education center.

The second day of the course involved the “Florida Keys & Me” program, hosted by FIU at Harry Harris Park. Taught by Kirk Linaje, a biologist for the Environmentally Endangered Lands program (EEL), the citizenscience field trip allowed students to learn about scientific techniques used in the field.

Participants graduated from the master course with fresh ideas about how to reach more people with their newly acquired knowledge about the Keys’ ecosystems and environment.

The fishing has been fantastic whether it be offshore, near shore or in the backcountry.

Ross DeMarzo of All Lit Up Charters put together a great catch of sailfish, tuna, grouper, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper last Sunday — a nice variety for just one day of fishing. DeMarzo said with all the good fishing going on it was like the waves and rain were never there. Any seasoned fisherman would be able to tell that DeMarzo is a fishy guy with the knowledge of 20 years fishing in the Keys to acquire. RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

We need to see some changes to the Restoration Blueprint BTT committed to conservation and restoration of the Florida Keys marine environment Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) is committed to conservation and restoration of the Florida Keys marine environment and our historically great fisheries for bonefish, tarpon and permit. A good Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary management plan can advance these conservation/restoration goals. BTT is pressing for changes to the draft plan, the “Restoration Blueprint,” to assure that the blueprint achieves these goals.

BTT’s proposed changes are driven by four criteria: (1) good science, (2) the recognized need for conservation/restoration in the Keys, (3) area closures and restrictions on fishing as a management tool to be used when supported clearly by evidence and facts, and (4) catch and release flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit as an environmentally compatible and sustainable activity. Applying these factors can produce a better sanctuary plan.

For example, BTT is urging the sanctuary (and the Florida Wildlife Commission) to close the Western Dry Rocks (WDR) during spawning season for permit. On-site research reveals fishing the permit spawning aggregations there causes an average of 40% of hooked permit to be killed by sharks before being landed. That level of mortality is unsustainable and diminishes the population of permit found on Lower Keys flats. Hence the demonstrated need for a WDR fishing closure from April through July. BTT is also supporting a set of restrictions — not found in the Sanctuary draft preferred plan — proposed by the Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA). One would create a pole and troll zone near East Content Key. Boats trying to cut across this large shallow area are chewing it up and driving off the bonefish and permit. Pole and troll zones are open to boats and fishing if access is by poling or a small electric trolling motor. Such zones are employed successfully in the Everglades Park waters of Florida Bay and should be used in other areas of the Keys.

Conversely, a number of sanctuary-proposed closures/restrictions are unwarranted. A series of off-limits zones around many islands in the Lower Keys backcountry lack evidence that the closures will produce bona fide conservation benefits. Plus, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with jurisdiction over these Keys, has already determined that fishing in these areas is environmentally compatible. In the Middle Keys, there are no facts supporting a near-shore closure along Long Key that would impact a historic tarpon fishery pioneered 95 years ago by Zane Grey. And a pair of questionable “transit only/no fishing” zones are planned on some Gulf banks where fishing in not the problem — but transiting boats running into the banks are. These proposals need to be modified substantially or scrapped.

BTT and its allies in the flats angling community are committed to conservation and sustainability in the Keys. And we want to support a sound sanctuary plan. We look forward to working with the sanctuary, FWC, and others to tweak the draft plan and achieve that important and effective balance. You can read BTT’s full position statement at BTT.org.

FIU's Center for Coastal Oceans Research proudly offers the eighth semester of this continuing education course. The classes consist of ten half-day field trips,meeting on Saturdays at 8:30 AM, at sites spread across the Florida Keys archipelago. While exploring natural communities, participants learn to identify resident plants and animals, and compare how land mass, elevation and distance from the mainland make each island unique. We also examine nature’s responses to changes humans have made.

The registration cost is $299 and includes a field manual. Classes will meet on January 18, 25 & February 1, 8 and 15. After a weekend off on February 21, classes resume on February 29, March 7 and 14, 21, and 28.

AWAY GOES ALLIE Turtle returns to waters off Alligator Reef

A

debilitated green sea turtle rescued off Alligator Reef in May returned home on Dec. 29. With a “goodbye” to Allie, onlookers onboard the Key Dives boat watched Bette Zirkelbach, manager of the Marathon Turtle Hospital, and Cortney Benson, Key Dives marine conservation coordinator, release a healthy and eager turtle back into the waters.

“This is what it’s all about. It’s so inspiring for me to see these group of divers who are so dedicated to Allie returning to the same spot,” Zirkelbach said following the turtle’s release.

It was during an evening in May when a group of divers on the Key Dives boat set out to Alligator Lighthouse on a mission to retrieve Allie.

The rescue was a rather quick one as diver Justin Benson found Allie 5 minutes and 39 seconds into the dive.

The idea of a rescue originated from John Bruen, a Key Dives instructor, who noticed that the turtle needed some help. Allie was found to have fibropapillomatosis, a disease specific to sea turtles characterized by benign but ultimately debilitating epithelial tumors on the surface of the biological tissues.

and feeding.

“I used to see her every night in the same place looking pretty bad,” Bruno said. “We needed to do something, and we did.”

Following surgeries at the Marathon Turtle Hospital to remove tumors, and chemotherapy to treat her eye, Zirkelbach told those aboard the dive boat that Allie’s now tumor free.

“There were no signs of internal tumors, so this is really exciting,” she said.

This was the first time Marathon Turtle Hospital and Key Dives collaborated on a turtle rescue and recovery mission.

“It’s very exciting to be doing something like this to assist an animal in distress for the first time,” said Key Dives owner Mike Goldberg. “Hopefully, it shows a way for others when they see the same to do the same. It’s really nice to see Allie make such a great recovery.”

After helping Allie off the boat into the water, Benson said it was really cool to see the turtle in much better shape than before.

“It feels really awesome to bring her back where she belongs and see her go back home,” she said. “It was an awesome idea that John had, and we just realized she was only going to get

worse if no one did anything. So we acted fast.”

Joel Gregory was the turtle hospital’s rehabilitator when Allie was brought on the dive boat back in June.

Gregory, who’s now a marine biologist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, noted that Allie was quite skinny when they captured her.

“Now, her neck is the main area you can tell she’s gained a lot of weight in a good way. A fat turtle is a healthy turtle,” he said.

Zireklbach said returning the turtle back to the reef was a first for the turtle hospital.

“It’s not something we usually do, but we loved how Key Dives promoted the conservation of sea turtles,” she said.

Experts say if you see a turtle in distress (floating, cannot dive, entangled, or rapid breaths) do not touch it.

All species of sea turtles are protected by state and federal laws and require a permit to be handled. The best course of action is to call the 24/7 stranding hotline at 305-481-7669, FWC at 888404-FWCC or radio the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16, and the Marathon Turtle Hospital will be contacted.

Eighth annual Baygrass Bluegrass fest set

slamorada Community Entertainment’s eighth annual Craft Beer and Baygrass Bluegrass Festival is bringing multiple award-winning artists from across the United States to Founders Park, as well as craft beer breweries.

This year’s three-day event is set for Friday through Sunday, Jan. 17-19.

“We’ve invited our favorite Florida brewers to join with some of the country’s top bluegrass, newgrass and Americana performers for three days of great music in the Florida Keys,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “We’ve got something for everyone, including square dancing Friday and a pickin’ party Saturday in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District, followed by a grand finale concert all day Sunday in Founders Park with some of the most talented, soon to be known, and known artists. It’s three days of impromptu jamming, amazing beer and fun for the whole family.”

The main concert — on Sunday, Jan. 19 — at Islamorada Founders Park, MM 87, runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (gates open at 10 a.m.) Tickets start at $35; options also include craft beer tasting and VIPs. All advance tickets will receive a free stainless steel pint cup and can be purchased at baygrassbluegrass.com or the gate, with 17 and younger free.

The festival will include two stages for continuous music, musical instrument vendors, food trucks, and art and crafts vendors. On Friday, Jan. 17, the weekend kicks off with a 6 p.m. “Square Dancing in the Streets Party.” On Saturday, Jan. 18, a Pickin’ Party with a full night of music on two stages and a craft beer tap takeover starts at 4 p.m. Both events are a $10 donation per adult; those 17 and younger are admitted free.

“Every year, we curate up and coming bands that we think festival attendees will love,” said Robby McClung, the festival’s producer, “including Grass is Dead, The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers, Chatham Rabbits, The Coppertones, Uproot Hootenanny and more, all in the beautiful Florida Keys. Plus, there will be several of Florida’s best craft breweries doing tastings and special releases throughout the weekend. Also, we want everyone to remember to bring their instruments so they can join in on the impromptu jam sessions happening throughout the weekend.”

During the concert, attendees can enjoy a swim at the bayfront beach, along with a full day of music and fun. Blankets and lawn chairs are permitted, but coolers are not.

Proceeds from the Festival help fund local arts and music scholarships — more than $750,000 awarded to date — for local Keys artists and students.

Music brings people together. That’s what local musician and Key Largo School (KLS) band director Susan Bazin believes. It’s the reason she has spent most of her life in the field.

From a young age, music played a key role in Bazin’s life. For years, she traveled Florida performing, finally settling in Key Largo. Two decades have passed since she began working at KLS and she’s never looked back.

Bazin is also a member of the Keys Community Band and concertmaster for Pops in the Park – free, familyoriented concerts performed once a month, November through April. The band is made up of retirees, semi-pros, students and “band geeks” from all walks of life, ranging from 18 to 80 years of age. Bazin said, “It’s not simply one person who makes music come alive.”

Full name? Do you have a nickname?

Susan Bazin. My nickname is Piklz (aka Piklz the Clown) because I was a professional clown for several years. I attended Clown College and learned everything from riding bareback elephants to juggling to tightrope walking.

What brought you to the Keys?

I grew up in Tampa. After getting a degree in music performance, I played with various orchestras and bands from Palm Beach to Key West. Deciding it was time to make a change, I moved to Key Largo thinking I could still travel to rehearsals and concerts up north. Late nights on the turnpike changed that pretty quickly, so I opened a recording studio here in Key Largo, taught in small schools, gave private lessons and amped up my clown services!

How did you get involved with Key Largo School?

I worked with a lot of band directors over the years and saw how much time and energy it took to run a good program, so when I was offered the job at Key Largo School, I agreed to do it for just one year. I ended up enjoying it so much, realizing I was making a bigger impact on more students than I could reach through teaching private lessons, and decided to stay on. That was 20 years ago.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Definitely the students. Teaching sixth through eighth grade means I get to watch as they turn from little munchkins to young adults. I like to think I help them learn more than just reading notes on a page. Band is about being a family… a huge, diverse, odd, hectic family that flourishes on shared talent and experiences.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

My dad and grandmother were teachers, so I was hanging out in the teachers’ lounge long before I realized what I wanted to do. I started out teaching private lessons in college, which morphed into opening a studio in Orlando. A move to Fort Lauderdale brought me into the public school system and now teaching is a big part of my life.

Do you have a favorite story from your job you like to tell?

My favorite is about a student named Ismael. He was the only Monroe County student selected for All-State one year. (All-State is a program bringing together Florida’s greatest music students to learn from world-class conductors and teachers). Upon arriving in Tampa, I found out “Ish” brought his tuba in a case with no handle or latches. He and I carried it up three flights of stairs before realizing we were at the wrong location. Back down we went, following with a half-mile trek (that seemed like 30) – all the while carrying this large tuba. Ismael is now an accomplished composer and conductor in Boston. I believe it’s not about how you influence a child, but just that you do. I always hope their takeaway has a positive impact in their adult lives.

How did you get involved with Pops in the Park?

I needed a place to play, so I got together with fellow musicians who wanted the same thing. We began with a half-dozen people in the band, sometimes outnumbering the people in the audience, and are now at upwards of 40. We play Sousa marches, movie/ Broadway, patriotic, classical and jazz.

Each concert has a different theme and fun audience participation (singalongs, puppy parades, etc.).

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days start early with beforeschool lessons and end late with organizing for performances, school and the Community Band. I’m always working, but I love what I do so it’s a blessing.

Did you always have a love for music?

My music career began in fifth grade with the clarinet. I was horrible, squeaking all the time. I told my band director I had to quit and he said, “No, no. Try the baritone saxophone.” That’s a big instrument for a small fifth grader but I proudly strapped it to my bike. I was going to be a baritone sax player! Then, I promptly ran over my little sister and in a panic, I backed over her a second time. She was okay, but I returned to my band director and said again I had to quit.

He instead gave me the flute. That was the magic ticket to a life full of travel, excitement and joy.

Do you play any other instruments?

Yes, but I excel only on the flute.

My second favorite is the euphonium, which I often play with the Community Band. A good band director can play any instrument she’s teaching.

Who’s been your biggest supporter along your journey?

My husband, who not only enables me to do all this crazy stuff, but does it with sublime patience.

Who was your role model growing up?

My mom, who was constantly telling me I could do and be anything I wanted, but to make it my heart’s desire.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you?

I completely lost my house in Hurricane Irma. There was about 5 feet of water in the yard that washed away most everything, including my tuba, which apparently floats! We found it a week later about a quarter mile down the creek stuck up in a tree.

Finish these sentences: The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is… Hug my husband.

RECYCLING AFTER THE HOLIDAYS WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN’T RECYCLE FROM CHRISTMAS

T

he mistletoe’s hung, the cookies are baked, and the tree is lit. And underneath that tree? Lots of new stuff. Wrapped up in lots of other

stuff.

The tradition of opening presents at Christmas is long rooted in American culture. People love to give and receive colorful gifts decked out in bows and glitter. It brings a lot of joy.

But, after the excitement has subsided, we’re left with a lot of extra wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, decorations, and other stuff that gets tossed in the trash.

The Recycling Center at Stanford University has reported that Americans throw away 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than at any other time in the year. Aside from gift wrap, when you take into account holiday

parties and the tremendous amount of single use plastic cups, plates, and silverware used, it’s no wonder that the season of merriment is also a season of wastefulness. But it doesn’t have to be.

The first step to a more sustainable holiday is to curb consumption. “Refuse” can mean buying less, not using plastic bags for your shopping, or serving your holiday dinner on real plates instead of paper ones. When you wrap presents, use green and eco-friendly gift wrapping options. And lastly, recycle. But do it right.

While recycling rules vary by community and recycling center*, these general guidelines for common holiday items can help take away some confusion. Use it to see what is and isn’t recyclable from the holidays.

*Recycling in the Keys goes to the Waste Management Reuters Recycling Facility in Pembroke Pines. This list has been approved by its community outreach and education department and works throughout the Keys.

SPECIAL CARE There are a few things that shouldn’t go into recycling or trash bins. These include holiday lights, used batteries, and old electronics. These items should be brought to some retailers for recycling or to hazardous waste drop-off events.

Monroe County accepts Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste at 3 transfer stations (Cudjoe Key, Long

t’s now possible to drink beer that supports the waterways of the Florida Keys.

Islamorada Beer Company (IBC) and Winn-Dixie’s parent company Southeastern Grocers have launched a new canned beer in partnership with the Conch Republic Marine Army (CRMA) that benefits the group’s ocean cleanup efforts across the Keys. Six packs of Key Lime Hibiscus Ale are now available exclusively at the Winn-Dixie stores in Key Largo, Tavernier, Marathon, Big Pine, and Key West.

“Our goal as a company has always included supporting our local community and ecosystem in the Keys,” said IBC co-founder and CEO Tyrone Bradley. “We’re proud to have been asked to join up for this cause, and to introduce another refreshing beer to the local IBC lineup.”

The CRMA is a volunteer group formed in the wake of Hurricane Irma that is led by President Brian Vest of Big Pine Key. Hundreds of people pitch in for the group’s cleanup events throughout the islands, which have removed nearly 275,000 pounds of debris from the water. Their efforts attracted the attention of Southeastern Grocers and its foundation, At the Heart of the Keys, which is dedicated to local school and community partnerships through its Keys Winn-Dixie stores.

Key Lime Hibiscus Ale follows the easy drinking, island-friendly profile of IBC’s original craft beers, Sandbar Sunday and Islamorada Ale. Its citrusy and lightly floral flavor and only 5% alcohol by volume are ideal for a day on—or cleaning up—the water.
