Almost half of all TBP (Toll By Plate) transactions — or every time a car passes through a SunPass lane — have to be reviewed by humans. That’s because, officials say, Florida has too many — 123! — license plate styles, ranging from sailfish themes to protect-the-reef plates that are indistinguishable to the automatic recognition system. In 2018, the state standardized the font to help the situation, but old tags still outnumber the new ones being issued.

he new $14 million complex taking shape on Bertha Street has caught the attention of local residents heading to the airport or Smathers Beach.

A.H. Monroe, formerly AIDS Help, is building the new, three-story housing compound in the 1500 block of Bertha Street to replace the 16 units known as Marty’s Place that have long housed AIDS Help clients.

“The original Marty’s Place cottages simply were at the end of their usefulness, and were being held together by the resident termites,” A.H. Monroe executive director Scott Pridgen said.

He said the 16 original units were demolished to make way for 47 new, one-bedroom/onebath apartments for low-income residents needing some level of support services, whether it’s wider doors to accommodate wheelchairs or grab bars in the bathrooms.

Applicants for these units need not be disabled or living with HIV or AIDS, Pridgen said, but they do need to meet the income requirements.

“You need to make less than $42,000 a year,” Pridgen said, adding that A.H. Monroe currently has a wait list of 110 people specifically applying for a unit in the new Mar-

ty’s Place. “We have a total of 280 people on our overall housing wait lists. But people still can add their name to the list for Marty’s Place because not everyone will qualify based on income and others will have made other arrangements by the time these units are finished.”

Officials are shooting for an August grand opening and move-in date, Pridgen said, adding that the 16 residents of the original Marty’s Place have been temporarily relocated and will have first choice among the new units.

The new project also will feature a medical exam room and clinic, where residents’ physicians can see them, along with a multipurpose room for events.

Rents will range from $425 to $920 depending on income, Pridgen said, acknowledging some neighbors’ concerns about increased traffic and decreased parking in the neighborhood.

“We really try to be good neighbors, and are very aware of the concerns,” he said. “This particular demographic of residents don’t typically own vehicles, but rather scooters and bicycles, so we don’t anticipate parking being too much of an issue, but we will absolutely work with the neighbors to resolve any issues.”

CELTIC FESTIVAL NEXT WEEKEND Get ready for music, food, vendors, dancing and games

arathon will come alive for the seventh annual Florida Keys Celtic Festival, set for next weekend — Friday to Sunday, Jan. 10-12.

The fun begins on Friday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. at the Marathon Grill and Ale House, in Gulfside Village.

The “Kilts in The Keys Party� features the music of West of Galway plus a bag pipe procession, door prizes and raffles. Of course, ale, spirits and refreshments will be plentiful.

On Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 11-12, the fun moves over to Marathon Community Park. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Many locals return again and again to hear their favorite groups — Albannach, Screaming Orphans, West of Galway, Brendan Nolan and Colin Farrell. New this year is Connor Civatte, an awardwinning fiddler.

In addition to the music, there are plenty of opportunities for spectators — Women’s Highland Athletics Competition (watch women throw telephone poles!), the Official

Florida Haggis Hurling Championship, and a sheepdog herding demonstration. Also performing will be the Police Pipe and Drum of Florida Blue Skye Pipes & Drum. The Drake Irish Dance group will be performing, too.

Celtic Festival guests are invited to sample Celtic food, beer and shop vendors offering Celtic merchandise.

There will also be a Children’s Glen with activities for the wee ones!

On Sunday, the public is invited to a 10 a.m. church service on the festival grounds, with Rev. Cannon Debra Maconaughey of the St. Columba Episcopal Church presiding.

The festival is the church’s largest fundraiser of the year. It supports the church’s Hammock House — a free after-school program and summer camps that provide education and nutrition. The festival is sponsored by Celtic Heritage Productions and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

NORTHERN GRATITUDE Thank you, Marathon neighbors, city manager, city council, sheriff and fire department, for the warm welcome you gave Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The sleigh ride was perfect considering there was no snow. We enjoyed meeting the children and the smiles on their faces were priceless.

Rudolph (Mike Card) led the parade through the city. We offer a special thank-you to Chief John Johnson for putting this event together as well as city manager Chuck Lindsey and council, along with the sheriff’s office for giving up their night to escort us through neighborhoods, down U.S.1 and the beach.

This was a magical night and we were honored to fly through the city before our long night ahead. Happy New Year! Thank you!

BELL RINGERS RULE On behalf of The Salvation Army, I would like to thank Winn-Dixie and Publix and all the wonderful volunteers who rang the bell for the Red Kettle program in Marathon during the holiday season.

The Salvation Army provides assistance in many ways to those in our community who occasionally need a boost to get through tough times. All the funds raised in our community stay in our community.

Thank you to the Marathon Rotary Club, the Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Department, City of Marathon employees and council members, friends and neighbors who gave their time to assist in this 128-year-old tradition.

Many volunteers manned the kettles for multiple shifts, donned great Christmas costumes and created a happy atmosphere of giving.

The Salvation Army is most appreciative and we look forward to providing assistance to our community and growing the Red Kettle program next year.

Kris is the daughter of Lloyd Later (deceased) and Carol Later of Marathon and Rochester, New York. Steve is the son of Helen Schluter (deceased) and Charles (Fred) Schluter of Kingsville, Maryland.

Gatherings to celebrate the marriage were held in October 2019 in New York’s Finger Lakes region, as well as in December 2019 in Marathon. Kris is the corporate finance manager of Marathon Aviation Associates, and Steve is an equities trader.

The couple lives in Marathon.

IGUANA BAIT HITS THE PUBLIX SHELVES

F

lorida Keys Brewing Company’s Iguana Bait kölsch is now available for purchase at all Publix supermarkets in the Florida Keys. This marks the first occasion that any grocery store from Key Largo to Key West will offer locally brewed and canned beer on their shelves for purchase.

Not only is the beer 100% produced in the heart of Islamorada, it’s also entirely owned and operated by residents of the Keys and is crafted with ingredients sourced locally.

Iguana Bait is a honey-hibiscus kölsch made with local Keys honey and hibiscus. It’s a light, refreshing beer with sweetness from the honey and a slight tart fruitiness from the hibiscus. Kölsch is a traditional German-style beer hailing from Cologne, made using only barley, hops, water and yeast. Florida Keys Brewing Co. complemented its German-style kölsch with Hallertauer hops, local honey and hibiscus.

The name comes from the local iguanas’ voracious appetite for hibiscus flowers that decorate the island chain. Iguana Bait has a 5.2% ABV and 20.4 IBU. It’s available in 12-ounce six-packs at all Publix stores in the Florida Keys.

Florida Keys Brewing Company (FKBC) flourished out of a husband-and-wife collaboration of imaginative home brewing and a vision to give locals and tourists alike a truly authentic Keys product.

The sole owners, Craig and Cheryl McBay, launched their dream into reality in 2014 when they renovated a warehouse in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District to accommodate their first brewery and tasting room. This original location is still where most of the beer is brewed, and the original taproom can be enjoyed on special occasions and every Art Walk, held on the third Thursday every month.

“FKBC is the Upper Keys’ first brewery and only brewery that is 100% owned, operated and brewed here,” said Craig McBay. “We are driven by our love of creating a wide range of top quality beers and supporting our community and ocean conservation.”

United Way recruiting volunteer tax preparers

Garden Club plans rummage sale

United Way of the Florida Keys is seeking volunteers to assist with a free tax preparation program for households with limited incomes in Monroe County. Volunteers are needed to work as IRS-certified tax prep assistants or greeters. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed as tax prep assistants, greeters or translators.

After attending a free, one day, hands-on training on Friday, Jan. 10 in Key West or Saturday, Jan. 11 in Marathon, and passing an online certification, volunteers assist at tax preparation events.

These are regularly scheduled during the weekday or evening throughout the Keys, January to April. Volunteers’ scheduling and location are flexible. (Translators are not required to participate in the one-day training.)

Through this program, volunteers help fellow Keys residents maximize their tax return so they are better able to provide for their families, thereby making our community more affordable.

No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, grow and serve.

The Marathon Garden Club will be having a special event from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 on the club property at MM 50 in Marathon.

There will also be sales of local plants and orchids, with expert gardeners on hand to answer questions about specific plants grown in the Keys and geared to island climate and soil conditions. Jewish services to be held in Marathon The Keys Jewish Community Center will be holding a short afternoon service and social gathering on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Marathon.

This is the second time that the organization, whose normal services take place in Tavernier, has held services in Marathon.

KJCC has a number of members in the Middle Keys and wishes to reach out in order to meet their needs.

The KJCC is the only synagogue between Homestead and Key West. Its mission is to serve the Jewish community throughout Monroe County. More information is at keysjewishcenter. com.

Plant clinics set for Marathon The UF/IFAS, Monroe County Master Gardener Volunteers hold plant clinics to address residents’ plant, insect and gardening questions every month in Marathon through March. Book club to discuss Kingsolver novel Marathon library’s book club will meet on Friday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. to discuss “Flight Behavior”

by Barbara Kingsolver. The novel, set in present-day Appalachia, is a parable of catastrophe and denial. The story concerns a young wife and mother on a failing farm in rural Tennessee who experiences something she cannot explain, and how her discovery energizes various competing factions — religious leaders, climate scientists, environmentalists, politicians — trapping her in the center of the conflict and ultimately opening up her world.

The book club meets on the first Friday of the month. The February selection is “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens.

A LEGEND OF BLACK CAESAR

T

he one ingredient that goes into the making of a great legend is a kernel of truth. The legend of Black Caesar, perhaps the Florida Keys’ most infamous pirate, has a doozy. While many stories have been attributed to Black Caesar, a pirate who has manifested into several forms over the course of more than 100 years, this story will address the earliest version attributed to him.

The original Black Caesar is said to have been a large, powerful African chieftain who was captured by slave traders and brought to the Americas, where he would be sold into slavery. It was sometime in the early years of the 18th century. During the slave ship’s Atlantic crossing, a storm was encountered and the ship wrecked along the northern reaches of the Florida Reef.

Miraculously, the African chieftain and a single crew member, one whom he had befriended, were the only two to survive. With the help of a recovered longboat, the two would wash up on the shore of Elliott Key and embark on piratical adventures.

One crystal clear aspect of the original Black Caesar story is that he abandons his Elliott Key lair and joins forces with Blackbeard, probably the most famous pirate in the world. The powerful and blood-thirsty Black Caesar, according to legend, is said to have served as a trusted lieutenant among Blackbeard’s crew. The nugget of truth at the core of the Black Caesar legend is that a man named Caesar was, in fact, one of the 18 men on board Blackbeard’s sloop Adventure when it was attacked by Lt. Maynard’s British forces off of North Carolina’s Ocracoke Island on November 22, 1718.

Caesar, spelled Cesar in the historical record, was listed as a Common Sailor on the King’s documents of the day and one of at least five slaves captured aboard the Adventure.

According to Captain Charles Johnson’s “A General History of the Pyrates,” once considered the primary source on all things piratical when it was published in 1726, “Teach (Blackbeard) had little or no Hopes of escaping, and therefore had posted a resolute Fellow, a Negro, whom he had bred up, with a lighted Match, in the Powder-Room, with Commands to blow up when he should give him Orders, which was as soon as the Lieutenant and his Man could have entered, that so he might have destroy’d his Conquerors: and when the Negro found how it went with Black-beard, he could hardly be perswaded from the rash Action by two Prisoners that were in the Hold of the Sloop.”

It is an interesting description of the attack on the Adventure for two reasons. The “resolute Fellow” is generally considered to be Caesar. First, the man does not sound like some hulking, fierce pirate – nor treated as one by Blackbeard.

Second, the man was said to have been “bred up” or raised in some fashion by Blackbeard and that does not support one of the central tenets of the Black Caesar legend that boasts he was a fellow pirate and trusted lieutenant who had joined Blackbeard’s bloody crew.

In the case of Black Caesar, the kernel of truth acting as some kind of supporting document to bolster the legend actually contradicts it.

The Caesar (or Cesar) on Blackbeard’s sloop Adventure, though not the legendary African chieftain of legend and lore, was convicted of piracy and hanged, thereby putting an end to the pirate legend.

Black Caesar, however, would rise again. That story, though, is for another day.

n 2018, award-winning Florida photographer Michael Patrick O’Neill visited Marathon Middle High School. While meeting with the students, he used awe-inspiring photographs to tell stories about the ocean and conservation.

“It was visual story telling,” said MMHS’ Kathy Lancaster.

“We, the students and I, spent some time talking and thinking

about his presentation and decided to do something similar.”

Lancaster and MMHS art teacher Dabney Abbott worked with two sets of students — high school artists and middle school writers — on the innovative project. The younger students were tasked with writing a narrative to accompany the artwork.

“It was very successful and generated a lot of unique ideas, things they were passionate about. Plus, the kids did the research behind the issues to depict it verbally and through the artwork,” Abbott said.

1. Whale sharks are the gentle giants of the oceans. They can live up to 100 years and reach up to 41,000 pounds.

Whale sharks are an endangered species and rough estimates put their numbers at only 7,000 left. Though it seems different, whale sharks have no natural predators. Except humans.

Whale sharks fall victim mainly to finning, the deadly act of removing fins for human appetite and leaving the remains to suffer and die. To help, support conservation groups protecting whale sharks.

4. Oil spills wreak havoc on any ecosystem and organism they reach. An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem, due to human activity and is a form of pollution. The 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was one of the most memorable. These detrimental spills take lots of money and time to clean up. Who knows what kind of long-term damage these spills cost us?

Consumed plastic won’t deteriorate over time so when the next fish or bird in the food chain feeds, the plastic will transfer to its stomach. This process continues until all animals in the food chain have these plastic pieces as well. There are many ways we can assist marine life by taking a few precautionary steps such as cleaning up and refraining from throwing trash inside or near the ocean in the first place!

2. People often think that hogfish belong to the snapper family, but there is an important distinction for fishermen. We need to obey the rules and regulations to maintain the interplay of the species. The hogfish is a species of wrasse, many of which are bright colored. Their population is greatly decreasing. But we still have time to help the species. It’s simple! All we have to do is obey the fishing regulations. It’s within our generation’s power to help.Â

There are approximately 5.25 trillion pieces of trash in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million pounds enter the ocean every hour. If our oceans deteriorate any more, we will, too.

Fabiola Santiago, a Miami Herald reporter and columnist since 1980, will speak on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Friends of Marathon Speakers’ Series. There is a meetand-greet at 1:30 p.m. and the talk gets underway at 2 p.m. This talk will be held at the St. Columba church sanctuary, not the parish hall. It’s free to attend.

CHI cuts the ribbon Community Health of South Florida has invited the public to the grand re-opening of the Marathon Health Center. The ceremony is set for Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the facility located at 2805 Overseas Hwy. There will be food and music, free health screenings and a tour of the center.

Sheriff’s office sets up ‘safe zone’ for transactions

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is joining the Key West Police Department and now offering the lobbies of its substations and headquarters building as safe zones for residents making online transactions or to anyone buying or selling in person.

Those who are worried about giving strangers their home address — or meeting with strangers in general — to make transactions can now do so in a safe place. The rise in popularity of websites such as Craigslist and eBay, among others, has changed the way many make transactions, especially during the holidays.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay said both the buyer’s and seller’s privacy is protected in this way.

“I saw Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg’s plan to offer this service and I thought it was a fantastic idea,” said Ramsay. “I’m happy to announce the Sheriff’s Office is also on board. Myself and Chief Brandenburg want to ensure that we’re doing everything we can to make every resident safe from Key Largo to Key West.”

Residents who wish to use one of the Sheriff’s Office substation lobbies can do so during working hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Marathon Substation is located at 3103 Overseas Highway. The phone number is 305-289-2430.

Locals register for race in late January Locals can register for the 7 Mile Bridge Run on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020 beginning at 6 a.m. The field is limited and often sells out in minutes. A link to register will be posted the evening before on the website 7MBRun.com. Runners must show a photo ID with the same Monroe County address with which they registered when picking up the race packet.

Out-of-Keys runners who attempt to register in the Keys resident category will be disqualified and will not receive a refund.

he Florida Keys were ready for their close-ups this summer and are lookin’ good in the latest captivating collection of print ads designed to draw a diverse array of visitors this winter.

John Underwood, chief marketing officer for Tinsley Advertising, unveiled some of the alluring images and resulting advertisements at the Dec. 18 Tourist Development Council meeting in Key West.

Tinsley has handled the Keys’ advertising for the past 30 or so years and during summer 2019 coordinated a 30-day photo shoot.

“We shot all five districts in the Keys, covering all subject matter over a 30-day period,” Underwood said.

“The shoot yielded more than 1,700 images with 80 different set-ups and included six photographers, including several locals.”

The results are striking and tailored to appeal to various audiences in each market.

“This includes an airport domination program at Newark Liberty Airport,” Underwood said, referring to an impactful marketing program that fills most of the available advertising spaces in an airport or train station with images of the Florida Keys during the coldest winter months.

For example, one Marathon ad features a couple relaxing at the new Isla Bella Resort, while a few Key West ads target gay and lesbian travelers by featuring a same-sex beach wedding and two men sharing a paddleboard.

Other images highlight the Keys’ offshore fishing options, with a striking photo that shows two anglers on the stern of a fishing boat and a brilliant green mahi mahi approaching their bait underwater. The text says, “Guess who’s coming to dinner.”

There are also offshore island beaches, glass-bottomed kayaks, a potter working outside and other artfocused images.

AWAY GOES ALLIE Turtle returns to waters off Alligator Reef

A

debilitated green sea turtle rescued off Alligator Reef in May returned home on Dec. 29. With a “goodbye” to Allie, onlookers onboard the Key Dives boat watched Bette Zirkelbach, manager of the Marathon Turtle Hospital, and Cortney Benson, Key Dives marine conservation coordinator, release a healthy and eager turtle back into the deep blue waters.

“This is what it’s all about. It’s so inspiring for me to see these group of divers who are so dedicated to Allie returning to the same spot,” Zirkelbach said following the turtle’s release.

It was during an evening in May when a group of divers on the Key Dives boat set out to Alligator Lighthouse on a mission to retrieve Allie.

The rescue was a rather quick one as diver Justin Benson found Allie 5 minutes and 39 seconds into the dive.

The idea of a rescue originated from John Bruen, a Key Dives instructor, who noticed that the turtle needed some help. Allie was found to have fibropapillomatosis, a disease specific to sea turtles characterized by benign but ultimately debilitating epithelial tumors on the surface of the biological tissues.

Nearly 1,000 people gathered on Sombrero Beach this past weekend to cheer for Jack-O-Lantern, a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle as he returned to his ocean home. “I used to see her every night in the same place looking pretty bad,” Bruno said. “We needed to do something, and we did.”

Following surgeries at the Marathon Turtle Hospital to remove tumors, and chemotherapy to treat her eye, Zirkelbach told those aboard the dive boat that Allie’s now tumor free.

“There were no signs of internal tumors, so this is really exciting,” she said.

This was the first time Marathon Turtle Hospital and Key Dives collaborated on a turtle rescue and recovery mission.

“It’s very exciting to be doing something like this to assist an animal in distress for the first time,” said Key Dives owner Mike Goldberg. “Hopefully, it shows a way for others when they see the same to do the same. It’s really nice to see Allie make such a great recovery.”

After helping Allie off the boat into the water, Benson said it was really cool to see the turtle in much better shape than before.

“It feels really awesome to bring her back where she belongs and see her go back home,” she said. “It was an awesome idea that John had, and we just realized she was only going to get

worse if no one did anything. So we acted fast.”

Joel Gregory was the turtle hospital’s rehabilitator when Allie was brought on the dive boat back in June.

Gregory, who’s now a marine biologist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, noted that Allie was quite skinny when they captured her.

“Now, her neck is the main area you can tell she’s gained a lot of weight in a good way. A fat turtle is a healthy turtle,” he said.

Zireklbach said returning the turtle back to the reef was a first for the turtle hospital.

“It’s not something we usually do, but we loved how Key Dives promoted the conservation of sea turtles,” she said.

Experts say if you see a turtle in distress (floating, cannot dive, entangled, or rapid breaths) do not touch it.

All species of sea turtles are protected by state and federal laws and require a permit to be handled. The best course of action is to call the 24/7 stranding hotline at 305-481-7669, FWC at 888404-FWCC or radio the Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16, and the Marathon Turtle Hospital will be contacted.

I want to express my political beliefs on democracy and how it could be made better even though it would require a nudge of communistic beliefs. Just to back up our government from a tyrant dictatorship.

What do you hope to be remembered for at MMHS? I want to be the one kid who changed the views of others and made them change for the benefit of everybody.

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

Here’s what the community has to say:

Bill Horn is a Marathon resident who has fished the Keys flats for over 45 years. He is vice chairman of the board of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, former assistant secretary of Interior for Fish, Wildlife, and Parks under President Reagan, author of ‘Seasons on the Flats’ and a mostly retired natural resources law attorney.

We need to see some changes to the Restoration Blueprint BTT committed to conservation and restoration of the Florida Keys marine environment Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) is committed to conservation and restoration of the Florida Keys marine environment and our historically great fisheries for bonefish, tarpon and permit. A good Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary management plan can advance these conservation/restoration goals. BTT is pressing for changes to the draft plan, the “Restoration Blueprint,” to assure that the blueprint achieves these goals.

BTT’s proposed changes are driven by four criteria: (1) good science, (2) the recognized need for conservation/restoration in the Keys, (3) area closures and restrictions on fishing as a management tool to be used when supported clearly by evidence and facts, and (4) catch and release flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit as an environmentally compatible and sustainable activity. Applying these factors can produce a better sanctuary plan.

For example, BTT is urging the sanctuary (and the Florida Wildlife Commission) to close the Western Dry Rocks (WDR) during spawning season for permit. On-site research reveals fishing the permit spawning aggregations there causes an average of 40% of hooked permit to be killed by sharks before being landed. That level of mortality is unsustainable and diminishes the population of permit found on Lower Keys flats. Hence the demonstrated need for a WDR fishing closure from April through July. BTT is also supporting a set of restrictions — not found in the Sanctuary draft preferred plan — proposed by the Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA). One would create a pole and troll zone near East Content Key. Boats trying to cut across this large shallow area are chewing it up and driving off the bonefish and permit. Pole and troll zones are open to boats and fishing if access is by poling or a small electric trolling motor. Such zones are employed successfully in the Everglades Park waters of Florida Bay and should be used in other areas of the Keys.

Conversely, a number of sanctuary-proposed closures/restrictions are unwarranted. A series of off-limits zones around many islands in the Lower Keys backcountry lack evidence that the closures will produce bona fide conservation benefits. Plus, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with jurisdiction over these Keys, has already determined that fishing in these areas is environmentally compatible. In the Middle Keys, there are no facts supporting a near-shore closure along Long Key that would impact a historic tarpon fishery pioneered 95 years ago by Zane Grey. And a pair of questionable “transit only/no fishing” zones are planned on some Gulf banks where fishing in not the problem — but transiting boats running into the banks are. These proposals need to be modified substantially or scrapped.

BTT and its allies in the flats angling community are committed to conservation and sustainability in the Keys. And we want to support a sound sanctuary plan. We look forward to working with the sanctuary, FWC, and others to tweak the draft plan and achieve that important and effective balance. You can read BTT’s full position statement at BTT.org.

ark your calendars for this weekend: it’s the third Conch Records Music Video Fest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — Jan. 3-5 — at Marathon Community Park. The purpose, according to organizer Cliff Rydell, is a chance for local bands and musicians to create either a demo reel or a music video. The incredible side benefit goes to music lovers: a $20 admission fee gives everyone access to more than 40 bands over the weekend.

“There will be more than 100 musicians playing continuously on two stages,” said Rydell, of Conch Records, who is also the founder of TV88. “The Florida Keys has a lot of highly talented musicians, like Blues Hall of Fame inductee Jersey Slim.”

The festival benefits two local nonprofits: the Marathon Wild Bird Center and St. Columba’s Hammock House. The bird center is moving from one side of Crane Point Museum to another and renovating the facility.

Hammock House serves local children with after-school care and special activities for school vacations.

“Boy, I wish I had a place like Hammock House when I was growing up,” Rydell said.

The festival welcomes an incredible range of musicians. Upper Keys local Dave Feder is known for his classical guitar skills. Shana Gaskill plays the cello. All three bands who were finalists in the Best of Marathon contest — Pine Billies, Stone Crabs and Fiddle Rock — will also make an appearance.

“Have you ever heard Ray West play the flute? He sounds just like Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull,” Rydell said. “West was one of our early supporters when we started bouncing around ideas for a music festival. I told him we could do it, but only if his band, Windpower, could dress up as Jethro Tull and so Marathon Community Theatre’s costume department is helping out.”

Rydell said he’s also excited to see son-and-father duo Marc and Christian Davis play together. “Everyone knows and loves Marc, but his son Christian is one of the most talented guitarists on the planet.”

Eighth annual Baygrass Bluegrass

slamorada Community Entertainment’s eighth annual Craft Beer and Baygrass Bluegrass Festival is bringing multiple award-winning artists from across the United States to Founders Park, as well as craft beer breweries.

This year’s three-day event is set for Friday through Sunday, Jan. 17-19.

“We’ve invited our favorite Florida brewers to join with some of the country’s top bluegrass, newgrass and Americana performers for three days of great music in the Florida Keys,” said David Feder, president of ICE. “We’ve got something for everyone, including square dancing Friday and a pickin’ party Saturday in the Morada Way Arts and Cultural District, followed by a grand finale concert all day Sunday in Founders Park with some of the most talented, soon to be known, and known artists. It’s three days of impromptu jamming, amazing beer and fun for the whole family.”

The main concert — on Sunday, Jan. 19 — at Islamorada Founders Park, MM 87, runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (gates open at 10 a.m.) Tickets start at $35; options also include craft beer tasting and VIPs. All advance tickets will receive a free stainless steel pint cup and can be purchased at baygrassbluegrass.com or the gate, with 17 and younger free.

The festival will include two stages for continuous music, musical instrument vendors, food trucks, and art and crafts vendors. On Friday, Jan. 17, the weekend kicks off with a 6 p.m. “Square Dancing in the Streets Party.” On Saturday, Jan. 18, a Pickin’ Party with a full night of music on two stages and a craft beer tap takeover starts at 4 p.m. Both events are a $10 donation per adult; those 17 and younger are admitted free.

“Every year, we curate up and coming bands that we think festival attendees will love,” said Robby McClung, the festival’s producer, “including Grass is Dead, The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers, Chatham Rabbits, The Coppertones, Uproot Hootenanny and more, all in the beautiful Florida Keys. Plus, there will be several of Florida’s best craft breweries doing tastings and special releases throughout the weekend. Also, we want everyone to remember to bring their instruments so they can join in on the impromptu jam sessions happening throughout the weekend.”

During the concert, attendees can enjoy a swim at the bayfront beach, along with a full day of music and fun. Blankets and lawn chairs are permitted, but coolers are not.

Proceeds from the Festival help fund local arts and music scholarships — more than $750,000 awarded to date — for local Keys artists and students.

conjured up the New Year Prediction column I wrote for this very paper 10 years ago to see how accurate my predictions were … and the first prediction I made is amazing in that it is as true today as it was then. This is the actual 10-yearold prediction: 1) The Miami Dolphins will not win the Super Bowl, but will have the perfect opportunity for great seats at the game seeing as it’s being played IN THEIR OWN STADIUM. A decade later, and the prophecy is still so sadly true. Hard Rock Stadium hosts the Super Bowl, and the only way the Dolphins will get in is to buy tickets. What is it going to take to get an NFL championship contender back in South Florida? Will any of us be alive to see it? This is depressing.

Let’s move on. Here was my second prediction for 2010: 2) Florida’s economy will get a shot in the arm (maybe the buttocks) from all the post-season football that the New Year will bring (the Orange Bowl, the Pro Bowl, the Super Bowl).

Beer and potato chip sales will skyrocket nationwide, while local hot dog hawkers and stadium cleanup staff will enjoy working for their wages while watching all those professional athletes earn tens of thousands of dollars for each hour they play.

This one is still true for 2020. The stadium staff will slave for comparative peanuts while attitudinal athletes will earn HUGE bonuses. But it beats working for a stadium that will never host a Super Bowl.

My third prediction referenced the genius of Jimmy Buffett in securing naming rights for what was then Landshark Stadium. I so missed the target on this prediction — during January 2010, Buffett’s contract expired and the Super Bowl was played in Sun Life Stadium.

My fourth prediction is one that I hope comes true again this year: 4) Some of the fans who visit South Florida for the ongoing postseason pigskin spectacular will venture into the Keys. Hopefully, they’ll have a good time and spend some money before they leave.

All I can add to that is that if you can afford tickets to the Super Bowl, the least you can do is come to the Keys and share the wealth. Our local charter fishermen, dive operators, restaurants and bars, resorts and vacation rentals and (ahem) musicians depend upon your support! We love you! (And your $$$.)

My fifth prediction from a decade ago dealt with the economy. While our national economy is far better than it was 10 years ago, we still have some local issues related JOHN to our cost of living BARTUS and Irma recovery.

I’m going to hold com out hope — but not make any predictions — that things will get better in 2020.

As far as New Year predictions for 2020, here they are in a nutshell.

1) There will be an election for everything from president to mosquito control (but no Marathon City Council election). While pundits will deliberate and pontificate and try to contain their uncertainty, I have no doubt about this prediction I will make concerning the 2020 election: By this time next year, we will all be so incredibly tired of debates and speeches, vicious negative campaign commercials, fake news and mendacious social media posts from Russian bots or clueless individuals. As Winston Churchill once said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

2) Here is another absolutely 100% accurate prediction: the Atlantic hurricane season will begin on June 1. We can only hope we are left alone for another year, and we can only pray that monsters like Dorian won’t make landfall anywhere. That’s it for my 2020 predictions.

Going back a decade, I predicted that I would ring in the New Year playing music at the Key Colony Inn. Ten years later, and it’s still true.
