The number of surviving spouses set to receive benefits they’ve been waiting for with a repeal of the “Military Widows Tax” in the National Defense Authorization Act. raig Cates no longer has to mount an election campaign for his County Commission run — at least not for a year.

Gov. Ron DeSantis called Cates on Dec. 10 and, after a brief conversation, appointed him to complete the term of retiring County Commissioner Danny Kolhage.

Cates was running for the District 1 commission seat against long-shot Republican challenger Andy Williams. County Tax Collector Danise Henriquez also is running for the seat in the general election next year.

“The governor just called me 20 minutes ago,” an excited Cates told Keys Weekly the morning of Dec. 10.

“He said he’d recently been in Key West. He asked if I was retired, and what I wanted to accomplish on the commission. He said I have a lot of support in the community and that he’d like to appoint me to represent District 1.”

Cates said he was thrilled by the opportunity.

“I’m getting in a year early,” he said. “I’ll serve out Commissioner Kolhage’s term, which ends in No-

vember, and then I’ll have to run for re-election.”

But by then, he’ll be running as an incumbent, which is typically the preferred position of a political candidate.

Craig Cates Cates said Henriquez had also applied for the appointment, along with former Tourist Development Council member Steve Smith.

“But they’re both Democrats, and you’d have to assume a Republican governor will appoint a Republican,” Cates said.

The Monroe County Democrats’ executive committee urged Cates to refuse the appointment, saying, “the governor has used his executive power to put his thumb on the scale by creating a false sense of incumbency.”

In response to the appointment, Henriquez said, “I’m still receiving so much support that I will let the voters decide in November 2020 and not the governor.”

RESTORATION BLUEPRINT Stakeholders weigh in on Sanctuary proposal NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint was introduced at the Sanctuary Advisory Council’s meeting in August, and the community has been buzzing about it since.

The proposal seeks to balance the need to bring our marine environments back to health while still promoting the economies and industries depending on those resources.

Four alternatives were presented, but constituents were invited to comment upon as much or as little of the proposals as they wanted – whether that be a specific reef, certain regulations, or an entire alternative. Alternative 3, the sanctuary’s preferred plan, would result in major changes in terms of expanded boundaries, additional zoning, tighter regulation and a new management plan.

Keys Weekly spoke with environmentalists and stakeholders in affected industries about NOAA’s Restoration Blueprint.

‘What can the Sanctuary do then?’

I’ve been watching the declining condition of the environment in the Florida Keys since the ‘70s, studying the science that tries to explain the problems and develops potential solutions since the ‘90s, and listening to everyone’s opinions about what the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary should do about it for nearly 15 years. There are no easy answers, but almost all of us who live here agree that our home waters are truly unique and that our natural resources are extremely valuable. They enrich our lives in countless ways; literally, in the cases of commercial and charter fishermen, diving businesses and the like, but also for those of us who take pleasure in boating, fishing, diving and other ocean activities.

Most of us want the same things from the Sanctuary: a healthier environment and the opportunity to enjoy it, now and for future generations. That’s what Congress tried to ensure with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Protection Act of 1990. “The purpose of this act is to protect the resources of the area … and to manage such human uses of the Sanctuary consistent with this act. Nothing in this act is intended to restrict activities that do not cause an adverse effect to the resources or property of the Sanctuary…”

I have fished, dived, boated, anchored and rested on sandbars without having an adverse effect on Sanctuary resources on a great many days. Other days though, I have unintentionally killed undersized fish, kicked corals with my fins, scarred seagrass meadows with my outboard motor, pulled corals and sponges up with my anchor, or frightened resting seabirds off sandbars. I’m one of the careful ones out there, but these things do happen.

More than a million boaters, divers, snorkelers and anglers use sanctuary waters every year. The majority has little or no local knowledge to keep themselves and our natural resources from harm. Look at the condition of the reefs and shallow seagrass meadows today versus 30 years ago when the sanctuary was established, and far fewer people were using its resources. Look at the photos, or better yet the scientific studies that show we’ve lost half the coral cover and nearly doubled the miles of propeller scarring in this timeframe.

I am 100% onboard with others’ pleas for the Sanctuary to focus on water pollution originating within the Sanctuary and from afar. I’m not hearing the same cries for attention to climate change challenges, but I believe they are on par and just as essential for the Sanctuary to lead on. That said, complete solutions for these problems are not within the Sanctuary’s direct control.

What can the Sanctuary do then? Make boater education mandatory. Strive to field more law enforcement officers in partnership with state and local agencies. Install more mooring buoys and place channel markers in strategic locations where doing so will have more positives than negatives for natural resources. Lead and permit restoration efforts. Expand the Sanctuary’s boundary as proposed.

Finally, get the rezoning right to help limit natural resource damage from local impacts.

This should not eliminate any legal activity on or in the water, but it may limit where that activity takes place. Many members of our community have provided valuable advice about what “right” looks like through the public comment process. Whatever your comment may be, you must get it in before Jan. 31. ecember 19, in the piratical history books, has been an active one in the shallow waters surrounding the Florida Keys. In 1818, the Emma Sophia, sailing from Hamburg to Havana, was sailing between the Bahamas and Cay Sal banks when she encountered a pirate schooner. The ship, said to have been 30 tons and armed with one cannon, was manned by a crew of 30 pirates who took command of the Emma Sophia and brought her to a small port formed by “the Florida Isles and the Martyr’s Reef.” The closest naturally occurring deep harbors suitable for such an engagement might have been at Bahia Honda or Knights Key, among a short list of others.

William Savage, a member of the Emma Sophia’s crew, would have his account of the event published in the Boston Daily Advertiser “Marine Journal” on Feb. 3, 1819. Savage wrote, “Davis, the spokesman, drew his knife and swore, that every man should die, unless he found the money, and first he would hang the supercargo.

He called for a rope, which he had brought on board, fitted with a hangman’s noose, sent a man up the mizzen yard and rove it and brought the noose down — and one man held it, and another stood ready to hoist.

Now, said Davis, tell me where is the money, where are your diamonds, or I will hang you this minute. In vain I repeated I had nothing more but my watch, which I offered and he refused.

Once more, said he, will you tell? I have nothing to tell, said I. On with the rope, said the villain, and hoist away. The fellow with the noose came towards me, and I sprang overboard. They took me up, after some time apparently insen-

sible. They took off all my cloaths (sic), and laid me on my back on deck, naked as I was born, except having a blanket thrown over me.

Here I laid five hours without moving hand or foot. Meanwhile they robbed us of every thing of the least value.”

While no one aboard the Emma Sophia lost their lives, the same could not be said for the second piratical event that occurred on the same date nine years later, involving the pirate slaver Guerrero. A letter written on July 31, 1827, from a British officer in Havana to another in London, read in part, “The illicit slave trader from this port … appears to be about to resume its former activity, no less than four Spanish vessels having during the present month sailed are the brigs Guerrero… She is well armed, and has a crew of ninety men; and there can be little doubt that her purpose is to plunder of their cargoes of slaves any weaker vessels that she may fall in with in the coast of Africa.”

On Dec. 19, 1827, Lt. Edward Holland and the 56-man crew aboard the H.B.M. (His Britannic Majesty) Schooner Nimble were patrolling the Florida Straits 250 miles north of Havana when a suspicious looking brig off the coast of Orange Cay, Bahamas was spotted. The noon entry into the Nimble’s log read, “Observed stranger to be a suspicious looking brig. I set topsail, cleared (the deck) for action & fired two guns to bring stranger to whom we observed hauling up to avoid us; made more sail.”

An exchange of cannon and musketry fire occurred between the two ships until the Guerrero feigned surrender by firing a blank and flashing a conciliatory light causing the Nimble to cease fire.

The Guerrero attempted another run, only to slam into Carsyfort Reef at full sail.

According to an 1831 edition of the United States Service Magazine, “The masts of the chase were heard to fall with a tremendous crash, followed with a horrid yell from those on board, which left no doubt of her being a Guineaman.” The ship’s hull split open and when the Guerrero filled with water, 41 Africans shackled in the ship’s hold drowned where they were chained. The Niles Weekly Register reported, “The cries of 561 slaves and crew were appalling beyond description.”

efore digging into the agenda, nominations for leadership positions on the Islamorada dais were unanimously passed during the Dec. 12 meeting at Founders Park Community Center. Mike Forster moved a spot to the left to take the helm as mayor, while Ken Davis was nominated for vice mayor.

For Forster, it’s been four years since he last served as mayor. He thanked council for the honor of the position and acknowledged the work of previous mayor Deb Gillis “I’m proud of you and all your accomplishments and the passion you put into the village, and look forward to a great last year,” Forster said.

In her remarks, Gillis said, “it’s probably been the best experience of my life.” Gillis will be terming out following 2020, along with Forster, who’s running for county commissioner, and councilman Jim Mooney, who’s running for state representative.

In his return to the mayor’s seat, Forster initiated a discussion on golf carts in the village.

Today, their use on village streets is prohibited, except inside the Port Antigua neighborhood on Lower Matecumbe, which council allowed via an ordinance enacted in 2008.

Key. He said it’s time to have something on the books, and he wants fines to have teeth when it comes to violations, like use on U.S. 1 or operation of a golf cart by someone who doesn’t have a license.

He also proposed coming up with a pilot program to have contracted services that assist with enforcement so sheriffs aren’t pulled off the highway to deal with golf carts.

“It would take the personal interaction off of it,” he said. “This is a company that wouldn’t have knowledge of 30-year friendships.”

“If you want to expand that, which is a policy decision you’ll look at, staff suggests before you assume potential liability, to make a legislative determination that it’s safe, a good idea and keeps with good community character, and do that based on some data,” he said.

Davis said he’d like to see certain safety measures in place such as a minimum age to operate a golf cart.

“If I had to call the sheriff’s office for every time a golf cart in the community was being driven by a 12-yearold, I’d keep them way too busy,” he said. “There needs to be an ordinance on the books to cover all of Islamorada.”

Capt. Corey Bryan of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office expressed concerns over the fact golf carts don’t just stay in neighborhoods. He also noted that golf carts aren’t required to have insurance.

“If you’re riding around and you hit someone, car, how do they recoup losses or damages on this?” he said. “You basically put the burden on the injured to seek damages.”

Dave Webb of Port Antigua told council that all is not well with golf cart operation in the neighborhood. He says there have been instances involving kids operating golf carts pulling others behind on a rope. Webb said they also venture out of the neighborhood to Robbie’s and Anne’s Beach.

“I caution the village to have too much of an optimistic view of people abiding by rules,” he said. “If you’re going to expand use, you’re going to expand liability horrifically.

You will see them on U.S. 1.”

In other matters, council unanimously approved a resolution to reserve nine affordable allocations for affordable housing on vacant lots on Gardenia Street on Plantation Key. In September 2018, council directed the village manager to investigate the purchase of three vacant lots. In March 2019, the village purchased the property within the Lake Harbor Subdivision.

Council members also unanimously approved fiscal year 201819 budget amendments. Finance director Maria Bassett said building permit application fees were almost $460,000 over the amount budgeted. Revenue from vacation rental fees brought in an extra $45,000. Bassett said it’s $1,000 per vacation rental. To date, the village has around 215 licensed vacation rentals.

Around $102,000 was reimbursed to the village for fire rescue support in the panhandle following Hurricane Michael. Park entrance fees brought $150,000 more than anticipated.

On the expenditure side, maintenance by public works of the Fills during summer weekends and holidays cost the village $33,000.

n Dec. 13, more than 100 bikes lit up U.S. 1 in Key Largo during the second annual Cindy Claus Lighted Bike Ride. With Santa hats and bright bikes, riders took off from The Catch and proceeded north before circling back to the restaurant. Proceeds from the bike ride go to fulfill the wishes of kids this holiday season. Nineteen years ago, local Realtor Jane Wasmund contacted Cindy Smith, a postal worker, via the Key Largo Post Office and asked “Who answers the Santa mail?” The postmaster gave permission, and the two ladies sought to answer local children’s Santa letters, while granting their wishes and helping Upper Keys families.

The elves are busy these days up at the North Pole putting final touches on toys and trinkets for all those good boys and girls. As for Santa, he’s made the list and he’s checking it twice. Key Largo lighted boat parade set Key Largo’s Blackwater Sound will be shimmering with color as the 2019 Key Largo Boat Parade sets sail at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21. Illuminated boats ranging up to 55 feet, motors to sailboats to kayaks and paddleboards, will traverse the waters of Blackwater Sound to kick off the holidays with this annual tradition. Boats will line up at Dusenbury Creek Green Marker 41 at 6:30 p.m., then head north along the shoreline to Stillwright Point at 7:30 p.m. The best public viewing locations for the parade are the Marriott Resort, Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill, The Caribbean Club and Sundowners Restaurant. The 2019 Key Largo Boat Parade is a fundraiser for the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club Foundation, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to identify and support the needs of the elderly through service projects that create lasting, positive changes in our community.

JONATHAN BRADMAN Jonathan Bradman, a junior forward on the Coral Shores basketball team, is this week’s Upper Keys Weekly Male Athlete of the Week. Bradman is averaging 19.3 points per game on 58% shooting from the field, including 41% on three-pointers. Additionally, he is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals and 2.7 deflections.

Bradman played a big role in last week’s win over Marathon win with 18 points, on 2-of-4 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from three-point land; he added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.

“Jonathan has worked so hard in the off season to improve and become the player he has,” said Hurricane varsity head coach Jarrod Mandozzi.

“We’ve really needed him to do a little of everything for us this season and he has. He’s leading us in scoring, which is important, but that really doesn’t tell the whole picture as he’s also leading us in assists and steals and is in our top three in rebounds and blocked shots. More importantly, he has come up huge for us in clutch situations.

The long three-pointer he hit to tie the game in overtime — in our win over Marathon — is about as clutch of a shot as we’ve had here in the last three years.

Bradman has been very active in The Upper Keys Foundation community service initiatives. Last year, he was a team leader in the Hurricane Michael Relief Mission and also helped organize a team day at the Plantation Key Nursing Home where they sang Christmas carols to residents.

LUCIA RODRIGUEZ Coral Shores star point guard Lucia Rodriguez has been named this week’s recipient of the Upper Keys Weekly’s Female Athlete of the Week. Rodriguez, a junior who has been an integral member of coach Pat Meyers’ varsity team since entering Coral Shores two years ago, is averaging 12.6 points per game and is currently ninth in the state for assists with 6.7 per game. Rodriguez was selected team captain for the second year in a row.

“Lucia is one of the hardest working players that I have ever coached,” said Meyers. “She truly loves the game and goes well above and beyond on what is expected of her. She’s a great team captain and like all outstanding leaders, she provides a model example with her basketball preparation, her academics, and her community service through the Upper Keys Foundation and the Special Olympics.” Rodriguez possesses a 3.861 unweighted and a 4.278 weighted grade point average.

“I can’t say enough about Lucia,” added Coral Shores Athletic Director, Rich Russell. “She is an incredible role model on and off the court. You are going to have to look a long time to find a harder worker or a better young lady.”

Rodriguez has been active in several of The Upper Keys Foundation’s initiatives including assisting at food pantries and collecting supplies for those affected by Hurricane Michael.

She has also been very active in Upper Keys Special Olympics for the past five years.

“Lucia is a special young lady,” said Special Olympics coach Peter Reinosa.

“Last year, she had a choice of attending the prom or going to Orlando to help us out with Special Olympics; she chose helping over her prom.”

AND THAT’S A (GREEN) WRAP! GREEN GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

H

opefully you and your credit cards survived Black Friday and Cyber Monday in one piece, and you’ve finished all your holiday shopping. While you catch your breath, we wanted to bring something to your attention — gift wrapping.

Originally created from spare envelope liners by stationery store moguls Rollie and Joyce Hall (of Hallmark fame) in 1917, wrapping paper has become a huge industry worldwide.

The sheer magnitude of colors, sparkles and shine available today is enough to dazzle even the grouchiest grinch. But these embellishments come at a price — to consumers and to the environment.

The global gift-wrapping industry was valued at $15.1 billion in 2018. Most wrapping paper is eagerly ripped up and then tossed in the trash. The fancier the paper, the less likely it can be recycled. The same goes for metallic bows, tinsel, glitter and decorative tape. Some wrapping papers are lined with plastics to make them more durable or shiny, which also makes them harder to recycle.

Here in the Keys, we’re all committed to keeping our environment healthy and our lives sustainable. So, as we cruise on through the holiday season, we wanted to suggest some non-traditional ways to wrap those presents that are good for your wallet and better for the Earth. And, they’re pretty enough that even the big man himself would approve!

ECO-FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES • Brown paper bags – simple, chic and easy. Available at most stationery and craft stores, the bags can be personalized with messages or designs. And, they’re totally recyclable. Embellish with some holly or Christmas berries.

• Upcycle tins and boxes – decorate old tins and boxes you already own to put gifts in. You can use paints, tapes, and fabric to give an old box a new look. Throw on some twine with a cute pinecone for a festive touch.

• Tea towels, scarves, or other fabric wraps – it’s reusable afterward and is a great, sustainable way to wrap presents.

• Mason jars – tie a cute twine ribbon and a sprig of cinnamon on the jar. Works great for small items like jewelry.

“GREENER” GIFT WRAP • Brown Kraft paper or brown paper saved from packages/cut-up bags – unlike traditional foiled gift-wrapping, brown craft paper is fully recyclable and completely biodegradable. Write nice notes directly on it for a personalized look. Decorate with a fresh sprig of green or a flower for a nice tropical note.

• Newspapers, old maps, cool posters – use the comics or the black-and-white printed pages of the paper for an extra-classy look that we obviously love.

• Your kids’ drawings – if you’ve got tots in the house and they love to doodle, you can use these as very personal wrapping paper alternatives.

• Wrapping paper made from recycled paper – duh.

- Bunched newspaper or folded cardboard – use as shipping space fillers instead of plastic packing peanuts or Styrofoam.

DIY GIFT DECOR • Twine, hemp, leather cord or spare scraps of fabric – instead of plastic-coated ribbon, use all-natural twine or other bits you save throughout the year to tie your presents.

• Washi tape – use instead of clear tape.

Washi tape is an adhesive sticker made with natural fibers. It’s recyclable with brown paper.

• Paper bows, fresh flowers, and other natural items for decoration – use instead of plastic and metallic décor.

• Small ornament - If you want to add some fun, tie a small ornament on top of a present for a reusable pop of color.

• Shred paper as present filler or instead of confetti.

THINGS TO AVOID • Glitter-encrusted anything and confetti – that shine is not recyclable. Most glitters are tiny microplastics that can end up polluting our oceans.

• Laminated, metallic or textured papers – not recyclable.

• Fancy holiday cards – because of the glitter and decorations, these also are not recyclable.

• Ribbons – most are vinyl or other nonrecyclable products and go straight to the landfill. If you receive any, save them for next year.

A DOGGONE GOOD TIME Pets and their owners get festive photos taken with Santa

total of 482 animal lovers attended the 22nd annual Pets & Piña Coladas event at Keys Kritters Pet Shop on Dec. 14-15. Animals of all shapes and sizes – from small dogs to large dogs, from hairless cats to hedgehogs, and more – lined up with their owners to get pictures taken with Santa. All participants left with a refreshing piña colada (humans only) and a doggy gift bag full of treats like Greenies, Stella & Chewy’s Meal Mixers, compostable waste bags, food samples and treats.

Started in 1997, Pets & Piña Coladas began as a way to bring together fellow pet owners and raise money for organizations along the Upper Keys, based on donations of $1 per photo taken. Since its inaugural year, proceeds have been donated to organizations like the Upper Keys Humane Society, Caring for Cats, and MarrVelous Pet Rescue, among others. Proceeds from this year’s event went to the Coral Shores High School Marine Lab, which Keys Kritters owner Robby Majeska set up for Coral Shores 10 years ago.

SPREADING THE CHEER Snow mountain, parade, entertainment excite

T

he prediction for a mountain of magical snow did not disappoint on Dec. 6 for the 15th annual Holiday Fest, hosted by the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce. Families and community members alike gathered on the beach at Founders Park to kick off the holiday season under the unifying theme of “Caring and Sharing Around the World.”

This local rite of winter drew a record-breaking crowd for stage entertainment, the ornament and gingerbread house competitions, Holiday Bazaar, delicious food and beverages, the lighting of the 35-foot holiday tree and the wildly popular Snow Mountain.

Local painter Elena Madden claimed the Best of Show award in the Holiday Bazaar’s handcrafted ornaments competition by besting a field of more than 40 artists. Her winning entry, which she named “Harbor Lights,” is a wonderful example of her depiction of the relationship and fluidity of water and light.

Cindy King also won big and delighted festival attendees with her ornament, “Randolph the Red-Nosed Key Deer,” which won the Best Use of Humor and People’s Choice Award.

Also taking home awards in the ornaments competition were Annmarie Anderson, Best Traditional Holiday Theme; Monica Bankowski, Best Adherence to Parade Theme (Caring and Sharing Around the World); Jane Tomlinson, Best Keys Holiday ThemeWater Related; Julie Austin, Best Keys Holiday Theme-Land Related; Michelle Williams Carson, Best Holiday Sea Creature; Wendy Cahill, Best Children’s Holiday Theme; Cindy King, Best Use of Humor and People’s Choice; Lisa Lee Herman, Most Creative Use of Talent; Brenda Bush, Most Creative Use of Recycled Materials, Amy JoAnn, Best Holiday Animal Theme, and Emily Kovacs, who took home the Honorable Mention ribbon for the piece she created underwater while diving.

Wild Women on the Water took second, Ocean Studies took third, and TowBoat US received an honorable mention.

Children also competed for prizes at Holiday Fest. Boys and girls 8 years and younger sported their best holiday garb as they met Mrs. Claus on the Founders Park beach stage.

Two children were honored for their holiday spirit and flair. Dalton Zeher took home the title of Mister Gingerbread Man and Serafina Delgado was crowned Miss Sugarplum Fairy.

Finally, the Florida Keys Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution took first place in the Holiday Fest Gingerbread House contest, followed

SAILFISH HARDWARE Caribsea wins annual Sailfish Tournament

T

he 56th Annual Islamorada Sailfish Tournament kicked off at Whale Harbor, hosting 80 anglers, plus friends and family with a grand buffet.

Great sailfish action started on the morning of Dec. 6 and continued over the next three days, concluding on Dec. 8. Capt. KC Spaulding of the Caribsea led anglers Kenny Spaulding, Sam Milazzo, Phillip Bryan and Lee Gahagen, all from Islamorada, to the winner’s circle with a total of 19 sailfish releases. The team took home sailfish sculptures, sponsored by Caribee Boat Sales and Yamaha Outboards. A total of 141 sailfish were released out of the 154 called in hook-ups with nearly $55,000 going to the winners.

Anglers were greeted with great conditions on the first day of fishing, and it did not take long for Caribsea to call in a hook-up. Milazzo would release the team’s first sailfish at 9:16 a.m. At the end of the day, the Caribsea took the lead with 10 releases, followed by the Kelly Dawn with seven and the Contagious with six.

Day two would start out early for Caribsea as KC Spaulding called in a hook-up at 8:38 a.m.

Thirty minutes later, angler Kenny Spaulding would release the sail. Meanwhile, team Remix would capture a triple-header of sails and the Contagious would release a fish. At the end of two days of fishing, the Caribsea would hold onto the lead with 16 fish, followed by the Contagious with 13 and Remix with 9.

The final day of fishing saw a lot of action.

Milazzo would release eight of those fish, winning the Bill Hirni highpoint angler award as well as a sailfish sculpture sponsored by Tackle Center of Islamorada. Contagious would take second spot with 16 releases and take home sailfish trophies also sponsored by Tackle Center of Islamorada. Angler Andy Cone would take second place in the junior division with one release.

Anglers Brian Devries, Kyle Diaz and Mike Marz, all from Grand Rapids, Michigan, along with mate/anglers Dan Flynn, Travis Butters and Brandon Hopper, all from the Upper Keys, would pick at sails each day, beating both the Remix and Relentless on time with 12 fish. The Challenger was awarded third-place trophies. They also won most tagged sailfish awards by tagging 10 of the 12 fish released.

1 Junior angler Danny Maduro from Miami, fishing with Captain Ryan Cano, would take home the Top Junior Angler award with two sailfish releases. Top Lady Angler, Debbie David of Miami, released a total of six sailfish on the Relentless with Captain Paul Ross. Both anglers took home sailfish trophies sponsored by Mangrove Mike’s Café.

In true Islamorada style, the sailfish weren’t the only fish biting on this beautiful weekend.

Angler Kenny Spaulding on the Caribsea would land a 29-pound African pompano caught on a kite bait to win Whale Harbor’s sponsored Most Outstanding Catch award. The largest tuna was caught by Kirk Sentz of Tavernier, fishing aboard the Two Reel, weighing in at 19.8 pounds. The largest-mackerel award went to angler Sam Chastain from Indianapolis, Indiana, with a 7.4-pound kingfish. Kelly Dawn’s Patrick Nutt caught the largest dolphin, weighing in at 11.6 pounds.

The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the first leg of the Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship. The Caribsea is currently in the lead with 19 fish. Second place in the Gold Cup is the Contagious with 16 releases and third is the Challenger with 12 releases. The next leg of the series is at the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament Jan. 25-26 and the champions will be crowned at the Islamorada Fishing Club’s Captain Cup Sailfish Tournament on Jan. 30, 2020.

“Whale Harbor served up another great event,” said tournament director Dianne Harbaugh. The Islamorada Sailfish Tournament is the primary fund-raiser for the Islamorada Charter Boat Association. he weather has been hot and the fishing has followed suit so let’s get to it!

I ran two trips this week and both of them were filled with steady action and a smorgasbord of different fish. My trip last Monday was incredible despite the heavy winds. We ran back into the Everglades National Park in search of snook and redfish, and it paid off wonderfully. We must’ve caught 30-plus fish with some very respectable trout CAPT. DREW in between. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Capt. Paul of Solutions fishing was out this week on the Atlantic side of the island and reported a great bite on the edge of the reef. His clients caught kingfish and cero mackerel, red and black groupers, yellowtail, mangrove, and mutton snappers while drifting live pilchards and strips of ballyhoo back into the chum slick. At one point, he had a terrible issue with a massive barracuda that was eating his yellowtails so he caught that too. It seemed like so much action out there that his guests must’ve been whooped! He runs a 35-foot Cabo with air conditioning and can accommodate up to six people for all different types of offshore fishing applications. He strives mainly on just catching people fish but has a long resume of chasing pelagics across the board here in Islamorada.

MAKE SOME SIMPLE AND STYLISH GIFTS Most of us are straining our budgets to the bursting point this time of year. That’s why I love the DIY Christmas gift ideas. It can be homemade cookies in hand-decorated tins … or something more elaborate. Here are four ideas to get you started. Pro tip: Do some “experiments” the weekend before you plan on knocking out a set of your DIY gifts — there may be some trial and error to get it just right.

FAUX ‘SHRINKY DINKS’ If you are of a certain vintage (ahem), you’ll remember Shrinky Dinks — a craft popular in the '70s that involved cutting out a shape, coloring it and baking it into a pint sized version in the oven. Now, it’s possible to do the same with something you have at home — No. 6 plastic. Those are the clear plastic boxes that strawberries, for example, come in at Florida supermarkets. Cut out a shape, add a hole for ribbon or chain, color it, and bake it in the oven at about 350 degrees for three minutes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. The shape will curl up and look ruined at one point, but will eventually flatten out again.

Trust the process and think big. A 2-inch circle will shrink down to the size of a dime. The edges can be sharp, too, so file them down with an emery board.

Find a little tin box, spraypaint it white, and add some washi tape. Add a little succulent plant (either purchased or culled from your own garden) and — voila!

Cookies and desserts make excellent DIY gifts.

But to make yours stand out, think about the packaging. The little Chinese take out boxes are available for purchase on the internet, but a reusable receptacle is even better, such as a little clay pot. Make it look festive by either painting it red and white, or wrapping it in red and white yarn.

Add two black buttons to evoke Santa’s suit.

This DIY project is a little more intricate than the others and requires some supplies. First, you need an ink jet printer; laser printers won’t work. Then gather some freezer paper, and some magical Bubble Jet 2000 (the liquid sets the picture onto cotton) and some cotton or linen fabric. Print some favorite photos —family or friends — onto the cotton, trim and sew.

Embellish with some embroidery thread and some sequins for extra pizzazz and add a loop to hang on the tree.
